Headline:   Arab Rioters Unveil New Weapon to Fight Security Forces

Security forces tasked with dispersing Palestinian Arab riots are used to being attacked with rocks and firebombs, but on Friday they were surprised by a new weapon used by the rioters. Palestinian Arabs on Friday afternoon began violently rioting in the village of Silwad, not far from Ofra, in the Binyamin area. Border Policemen and IDF soldiers from the Netzach Yehuda Battalion who began to move toward a concrete shelter meant to protect the fighters as they disperse riots, were surprised to discover right above their heads a viper snake which had been placed there by the rioters in an attempt to harm the security forces. Company Commander Aaron Moyal commented following the incident, “We have witnessed various attempts to harm security forces, but in this case as well the forces’ vigilance prevented harm.”

Headline:   Blast outside mosque in Saudi Arabia, fatalities reported

Four people were killed in eastern Saudi Arabia after a suicide bomber tried to enter a Shiite mosque during Friday prayers. Islamic State has reportedly claimed responsibility. It is the second attack of its kind in a week. A car exploded outside the Imam Hussein Shiite mosque in the Al Anoud district of the city of Dammam. However, security officials, cited by local media, say the attackers failed to enter the building itself. A car parked near the mosque triggered security forces’ suspicions, but as they tried to approach it, the vehicle exploded, killing four people and setting nearby cars on fire. One witness, identified only as Ahmed, told Reuters he was told by acquaintances at the mosque that a man was killed when he tried to prevent the bomber from entering the building. The terrorist organization Islamic State (formerly known as ISIS, ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the attack in a Twitter post, Reuters reports. On Friday evening, the US military said it doesn’t regard the Islamic State group as a “significant threat” for Saudi Arabia, also failing to confirm the attribution of the blast, according to Reuters.

An Islamist coalition that includes Syria’s al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front has taken over one of the last government strongholds in western Idlib province, activists say. The Jaish al-Fateh, or Conquest Army, took control of the city of Ariha after a “lightning offensive”, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. However, the Syrian army said intense fighting was still going on there. Ariha’s fall would leave most of Idlib, bordering Turkey, in rebel hands. Since late March, rebels have claimed a number of cities in the province, including Idlib and Jisr al-Shughour. As well as bordering Turkey, Idlib is also next to Latakia province, a government stronghold and President Bashar al-Assad’s heartland. Meanwhile, the head of the al-Nusra Front said the group had been ordered by al-Qaeda’s overall leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, not to use Syria to launch attacks on the West. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Abu Mohammed al-Julani said al-Nusra Front was focused on capturing Damascus and toppling President Assad. He also promised to protect Syrian minorities that disavowed Mr Assad.

Iraq Headline:Twin car bombings at Baghdad hotels kill at least 15

Iraq Headline: ISIS Claims Blasts at Upscale Baghdad Hotels

The death toll from bombings that targeted two prominent hotels in Baghdad a day earlier rose to 15 people, with another 42 wounded, Iraqi authorities said on Friday, as a lawmaker warned that the capital is vulnerable to more attacks. The double bombing occurred late Thursday when two separate car bombs went off in the parking lots of the Cristal, formerly Sheraton, and Babil hotels. Initial reports said 10 people were killed and 27 wounded, but the casualty figures rose overnight. The two explosions shattered windows of the recently renovated hotels and destroyed several cars. Baghdad’s top hotels are usually crowded on Thursday nights with people attending wedding celebrations or parties. The twin attacks targeting heavily secured buildings in the heart of Baghdad demonstrate the boldness and freedom with which militants have been able to operate inside the capital.  The two car bombs were detonated by remote control, police said.

Headline:    Two killed in Turkey’s southeast as rival Kurdish groups clash

Two people were killed in southeast Turkey in a fight between supporters of rival Kurdish parties a week before a parliamentary election, security sources and party officials said. Supporters of Kurdish Islamist party, Huda-Par, and pro-Kurdish leftist Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) clashed in a village in Sirnak province near Turkey’s border with Syria. Two Huda-Par party members were shot dead, party officials told Reuters. A crowd that gathered in front of the hospital chanted slogans and vowed revenge. The HDP is accused by opponents of links to the militant Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a 30-year insurgency against the state in which 40,000 people have been killed. Huda-Par draws support from sympathisers with Turkey’s Hezbollah militant group, which fought the PKK in the 1990s.

Headline:  Turkish army forms ceremonial Ottoman unit on Erdoğan’s order

The Turkish Armed Forces have formed a new ceremonial brigade, dressed as Ottoman soldiers, to attend events marking the 562nd anniversary of the Turks’ conquest of Istanbul, upon the instructions of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The 1st Army headquarters in Istanbul formed the 478-man “Conquest Unit” through its personnel. The ceremonial brigade will be joined by an 84-men Ottoman military band, known in Turkish as the “Mehter,” in the official ceremony for the anniversary, which will be held in Istanbul on May 30 this year, a day later than the conquest’s traditional commemoration date. Costumes of the Conquest Unit, which will march behind the Mehter, will be provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The full set of historic attire will include 14 different costumes to represent different units of the Ottoman military. President Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu are both scheduled to attend the event in Istanbul’s Yenikapı Square a week before the June 7 general election.

Ahmet Davutoglu was using words that are major hints for all students of Bible Prophecy: “Al-Aqsa Mosque [The Temple Mount] is ours forever, and as Allah is my witness and history will testify, it will remain ours forever”. After vowing to retake Jerusalem if elected, Davutoglu stressed that his country “cannot be an ally or friend of those who desecrated the Al-Aqsa Mosque with their boots” referring to Israelis who had to thwart demonstrations. By this Davutoglu is accusing Israel of desecrating the Temple Mount since it is an abomination in Islam for anyone to enter holy ground unless they are barefooted.

Headline:  UN nuke agency report shows Iran probe essentially stalled

Amid accelerated international efforts to reach a nuclear deal with Iran, the U.N. atomic agency on Friday reported that work on a key element — an assessment of allegations that Tehran worked on atomic arms — remains essentially stalled. The report from the International Atomic Energy Agency also reiterated that more cooperation is needed by Iran for full clarity on its present activities. Without it, the IAEA said it cannot “conclude that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities.” After years of deadlock, Iran and the IAEA agreed in November 2013 on a new attempt to probe the accusations. The U.S. and its allies also included the investigation into a to-do list for talks with Iran meant to curb its nuclear programs in exchange for sanctions relief. Washington continues to insist that full lifting of sanctions depends on the IAEA’s ability to thoroughly probe the accusations and deliver an assessment on its findings. Iran denies any work on — or interest — in nuclear arms. It accuses Israel, the United States and other adversaries of providing phony evidence to the agency for the probe. The IAEA is focused on 12 alleged activities that point to Iranian attempts to make such weapons, including suspicions that Tehran worked on the development on a nuclear payload for missiles. The IAEA relaunched its probe two years ago by asking for information on less sensitive work related to nuclear arms allegedly carried out by Iran, with hopes of moving to larger issues later. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Geneva on Saturday in an effort to move the nuclear talks forward ahead of a June 30 target date for a deal. The confidential report issued Friday by the IAEA increased doubts that the agency could issue substantive findings on the allegations by that time. In Washington, State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said the allegations are “one of the issues that we’re working to resolve in the nuclear negotiations.” He urged Iran to “cooperate fully and without delay with the IAEA to resolve all the outstanding issues, in particular those that give rise to concerns about possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear program.”

Headline: ISIS seizes control of airport in Libya’s Sirte

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has seized control of the airport in the city of Sirte after forces of a Tripoli-based Libyan government withdrew, a spokesman said Friday.
Mohamed al-Shami, whose government is not recognised by the international community, said its forces pulled out late Thursday from the airport which had “fallen into the hands of the ISIS organisation.” ISIS itself said it captured the airport, which is also a military base, in a message posted on Twitter. It was the first time that ISIS in Libya has recorded such a military gain. “After they left, Islamic State group fighters entered the base which had been completely emptied of equipment, except for one military plane which is out of use,” said Shami. Gardabiya is located 20 kilometres south of Sirte, hometown of late dictator Muammer Qaddafi who was ousted and killed in Libya’s 2011 uprising. ISIS itself said it took full control of the airport following clashes with forces loyal to the Tripoli government, in a message posted on Twitter. Sirte has been the scene of several months of sporadic fighting between IS and the Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) militia alliance tasked by the Tripoli government to secure the city.

At least seven people died and 12 were injured when twin bomb blasts by suspected Boko Haram militants struck a wedding party in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state on Friday, locals said. The explosions, two minutes apart, hit the remote town of Tashan Alade at about 6 a.m. local time — hours before new president Muhammadu Buhari vowed in his inauguration speech that the “mindless, godless” militants would be defeated. Thousands have been killed and millions displaced during the Islamist group’s six-year insurgency. At the start of the year it controlled a swathe of territory the size of Belgium in the northeast of Africa’s biggest economy and top oil producer. “Seven people have been killed,” an unnamed police source told Reuters. “Relations and friends of the groom and bridegroom were just gathering when the bomb explosions happened,” said Adamu Illiya, a member of an anti-Boko Haram vigilante group, who added that 12 were injured.

Headline:  Explosions rock Burundi capital as deadly protests continue

Two explosions shook Burundi’s capital on Friday but no one was hurt, police and a witness said, as deadly unrest against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in office rumbled on. Pictures circulated on social media showed three charred vehicles in front of a KCB bank branch in downtown Bujumbura, until Friday an area largely free from the demonstrations that erupted on April 26. “We don’t know the cause of the explosion yet,” said a police officer who had visited the scene of the first blast. There were no casualties reported. In late afternoon, a second explosion rocked the same area, close to the post office, a witness said, adding there were no casualties. But a demonstrator was killed in Buterere suburb, where police clashed with protesters who say Nkurunziza’s bid to contest the June 26 presidential poll violates the constitution. A Reuters photographer in the area saw police fire at demonstrators who were hurling rocks at them. In the flashpoint suburb of Cibitoke, police shot at rock-throwing protesters and then used a bulldozer to clear street barricades. The demonstrations, which began a day after Nkurunziza announced plans for a third term, have kindled the biggest political crisis in Burundi since an ethnically-charged civil war ended in 2005.

Heavy fighting erupted in southern Yemen near Aden airport on Friday when a Sunni Muslim militia attacked Shi’ite Houthi rebels in a push to drive Houthis from the district, residents and fighters said. Saudi-led forces also made four air strikes on a military base near the airport, a source in the southern militia told Reuters. The fighting in Khor Maksar has killed four southern militia fighters and 15 Houthis so far, the militia source said. Intense air raids by the Arab alliance were also reported overnight by residents of Saada province, which borders Saudi Arabia in northwestern Yemen. Raids also targeted a weapons storage site in Sanaa, said residents. On Monday, Houthi fighters suffered their first significant setback in the south in two months of civil war when local Sunni militia ejected them from much of the southern city of Dalea, about 170 km (105 miles) north of Aden. The Sunni militias, who call themselves the Southern Resistance, are a loosely allied group of fighters who took up arms against the Houthis.

Headline:  US surveillance shows Chinese artillery on artificial islands, officials say

U.S. surveillance images show China has positioned weaponry on at least one of the artificial islands it is developing in the South China Sea, officials say, apparently confirming suspicions that Beijing has been building up the area for military use. A U.S. official confirmed to Fox News on Friday that China has put artillery pieces on its man-made islands. The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, first reported that images taken about a month ago showed two Chinese motorized artillery pieces on one of the artificial reefs. Although the weaponry would not pose a threat to U.S. planes or ships, it could potentially reach neighboring islands, the officials told the paper. There is no military threat,” one official told the Journal. “But it is about symbolism.” The Journal reported that in recent weeks the artillery has disappeared from view, though it was not clear how of why. U.S. officials said they believed the equipment had either been removed or purposely obscured by the Chinese. The American officials said that the artillery, is within striking range of an island claimed by Vietnam, which that country’s government has armed with various weaponry for some time.

The nuclear-armed rogue dictator state of North Korea has significantly upgraded its main rocket launch site, according to new satellite imagery revealed by a US research institute in a report on Friday. The US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies showed how the Sohae launch site on North Korea’s western coast was expanded late last year so that it can launch larger rockets – and potentially intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. Commercial satellite imagery since then reveals the regime has been working to add a support building and apparently a movable platform, which would enable a rocket to be transferred on rails to the launch pad. “The Sohae facility upgrade program represents a significant investment of financial, material and personnel resources and is another indicator, along with its public statements, that North Korea is determined to pursue its space program,” read the analysis of the institute received by the Associated Press. UN Security Council resolutions ban North Korea from launching rockets, given that the same “peaceful” space program technology is used to fire cataclysmic ballistic missiles.

Headline:  California’s largest lake is slipping away amid an epic drought

The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California, 360 square miles of unlikely liquid pooled in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. Now the sea is slipping away. The Salton Sea needs more water — but so does just about every other place in California. And what is happening here perfectly illustrates the fight over water in the West, where epic drought has revived decades-old battles and the simple solutions have all been tried. Allowing the Salton Sea to shrink unabated would be catastrophic, experts say. Dried lake bed, called playa, is lighter and flies farther than ordinary soil. Choking clouds of particulate matter driven by powerful desert winds could seed health problems for 650,000 people as far away as Los Angeles. The effects would be even worse along the lake, where communities already fail federal air-quality standards and suffer the highest asthma rates in the state. But the fate of the Salton Sea depends on a complicated series of deals that pit farms against cities, water rights against water needs, old ways of life against the new. The drought has forced a reconsideration of these agreements, with each side jealously guarding its claim to what little water is left.

Headline: Volcano erupts on southern Japanese island

A volcano erupted on a small island in southern Japan on Friday, spewing black clouds of ash and rock towering into the sky and prompting authorities to tell residents to evacuate the island. No injuries were reported after Mount Shindake erupted about 10 a.m. (0100 GMT) in spectacular fashion, sending dense pyroclastic flows of rock and hot gases seaward, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported. The agency raised the volcano alert level for Kuchinoerabu island, where Shindake is located, to five, the highest on its scale. Shindake also erupted in August last year for the first time since 1980.

Today I listened to a interview done on the Allen Colmes show between Billy Graham’s daughter evangelist Sister Anne Graham Lotz and Allen Colmes. The interview was about Anne Graham saying “‘We’re coming close to end of human history”.  Mr. Colmes asked her many questions about her beliefs and why it is  she thinks we are at the end of human history.  My heart was filled with gladness hearing her preach what is truth to Mr. Colmes.  If you are not a believer and you listened to the reasons why Anne Graham says we have reached the end as we know it, let me say this, there are a lot more to the end times signs that she did not give which show us we are at the end.  Watch the video first and then I will give you other important signs we are going to see Jesus return for all those who have put their trust in Him soon.  I am glad Anne did not give a date as no respectable Pastor or follower of Christ would come out and say on what day and hour Jesus will come from His Children.  We don’t need a date to know our time on Earth is drawing to a swift close. You will see why I said this when you see some of the other end time signs Anne Graham did not give in that interview.

I have to confess this is one time I agree with news coming from the Middle East.  I found myself laughing at the report below about Obama but the fact is it’s true what they say in the video.  In the book of Daniel God shows Daniel the world empires from Iran’s kingdom all the way to the revived Roman Empire. When you read Daniel you have to take note that there is no mention of the United States.  Now we know why. Since Obama has taken office he has weakened the U.S. like no other President and, is still tearing America apart piece by piece.  He has cut the military, fired most of the top brass in the military, and he has turned America’s back on Israel while cowing up to Iran who is still calling for the destruction of Israel and America.  Now I ask you why Daniel didn’t write anything about the nation who is suppose to be the mightiest nation in the world the good old USA?  The answer appears to be the because our leader has done so much damage that America is weakened to the point she won’t be much influence on the world stage in the last days.  You think it bad now?  Stay tuned with Obama at the helm you haven’t seen anything yet!

Headline:  IAF Strikes Terrorist Infrastructures in Gaza

IAF aircraft on Wednesday morning struck four terrorist infrastructures in southern Gaza the IDF Spokesperson said. Direct hits at the targets were identified, said the statement. The airstrike came in response to the rocket attack on southern Israel on Tuesday evening. “The IDF views the incident gravely, the Hamas terrorist organization is responsible” for any attacks on southern Israel, the statement added. Air raid sirens sounded in towns across southern Israel Tuesday evening at 9:02 p.m, as the IDF confirmed that at least one Grad rocket fired from Gaza struck near the community of Gan Yavneh, near Ashdod. Some residents of the south reported seeing Iron Dome missile defense batteries deploying to intercept at least one incoming rocket. Sirens were heard in Ashdod, Ashkelon and in numerous towns and villages in the Lachish and Hof Ashkelon regions close to Gaza. No injuries were reported. Following the attack there were reports that Hamas was evacuating its headquarters in Gaza in fear of an IDF airstrike response.

Headline: IDF Drill Prepares for Terror Surge in Judea and Samaria

The same day that Gaza terrorists fired rockets at Israel, with a Grad rocket striking near Ashdod, a wide-reaching logistical drill was held on Tuesday by the IDF’s Central Command to prepare for multiple security incidents occurring simultaneously. Lt. Col. Oren Asado, head of the Central Command’s logistic branch, spoke about the importance of the drill which was held by the Judea and Samaria division. “If in the large drill held by the IDF around two months ago the focus of the training was on mobilizing the forces and on an operational response, in the drill held yesterday, the entire logistical branch of the command was tested,” said Asdo. He explained that the drill involved “the mobility of thousands of fighters on roads which likely will be the focus of riots and breaches of public order.” Describing the challenge, he noted it involved “controlling hostile village spaces while providing a logistical response to transferring equipment, food, and water both to the population and to the fighters, all while under riots, gunfire, firebombs and more.” Both reserve forces, which are meant to provide the best and most immediate response to mass breaches of public order, as well as soldiers in mandatory and professional service took part in the drill.

Headline: Amnesty report: Hamas committed war crimes against Gaza civilians

Amnesty International said in a report on Wednesday that Gaza’s dominant Islamist Hamas committed war crimes against Palestinian civilians in the territory alleged to have collaborated with the enemy during last year’s war with Israel. A ceasefire last August ended 50 days of fighting between Gaza militants and Israel in which health officials said more than 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed. Israel put the number of its dead at 67 soldiers and six civilians. “Hamas forces carried out a brutal campaign of abductions, torture and unlawful killings against Palestinians accused of ‘collaborating’ with Israel and others during Israel’s military offensive against Gaza,” London-based Amnesty’s report said.
A statement by Hamas denied involvement in the actions described by Amnesty, saying that rival Gaza families had taken part in “revenge attacks”. Earlier, a Hamas spokesman criticised the report as being unfair, unprofessional and not credible.

Headline: Netanyahu calls for West Bank talks

For the first time, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu called for peace negotiations over Jewish settlements in the West Bank. His focus would be on identifying which of the settlements in the Palestinian-occupied West Bank could be kept and expanded, an Israeli official said Tuesday. The settlements for Jewish residents are regarded as violations of international law by many countries. Since his re-election earlier this year Netanyahu has faced criticism from the United States and the European Union for his reluctance to renew peace talks with the Palestinians, as well as criticism for continuing to build settlements on disputed land. Arranging an understanding on the issue of settlements could maintain the pace of construction without angering Western allies or hard-liners within Netanyahu’s government. The Israeli official said Netanyahu, speaking Wednesday with EU foreign policy chief Frederica Mogherini in Jerusalem, offered to keep some West Bank territory captured in a 1967 war, and leave other parts under Palestinian control. A Western diplomat commented, “Up until now, Netanyahu has refused to put any maps on the table, so in that respect it (the offer to Mogherini) was quite substantial. He was talking about borders in one way or another, even if it was based around the acceptance of existing settlement blocs.”

Activists have organised a flotilla to Gaza in an ongoing bid to break the siege on the Strip, which will enter its ninth year next month. The Freedom Flotilla III, which will be made up of at least three ships, has planned its course to be in the Mediterranean waters in the second half of June. The Ship to Gaza organisation in Europe has teamed up with the international Freedom Flotilla and is calling for an immediate end to the naval blockade of Gaza, the opening of the Gaza Port, and for a secure passage for Palestinians between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. This is the third time a flotilla will embark on a journey to break the siege of Gaza. Around 50 people from 20 different countries will be on board the Freedom Flotilla. Meanwhile, “March For Free Quds” is going to happen in order to commemorate the 5th year of Israel’s attack on Mavi Marmara flagship of Gaza Freedom Flotilla. IHH is going to organize “March for Free Quds” on 31st May 2015 at 17.00 that will start from Fatih Mosque toward Edirnekapı Martyr’s Cemetery where those killed in Mavi Marmara are buried. Gaza Freedom Flotilla organizers and participants will voice out their message to the world in the march for free Quds where the families and loved ones, representatives from national and international NGOs as well as human rights groups, community leaders, artists, journalists, local and foreign activists, Palestinian orphans and their families as well as the friends of Palestine will be in attendance.

Headline:   Hezbollah strike Qalamoun jihadis with help of drone

A Hezbollah missile annihilated a group of at least three Islamist militants in Syria’s Qalamoun region along the border with Lebanon Wednesday after being spotted by a drone, Al-Manar reported. “All members of a group of Nusra takfiri [militants] were killed in an ambush by the resistance” between the outskirts of the Lebanese towns of Arsal and Nahleh on the Syrian side of the border, the Hezbollah-run channel said. It said the jihadi group was planning to carry out a “terrorist attack” from quarries south of Arsal. But the station later aired drone footage showing missiles striking a militant vehicle and operations room with pinpoint accuracy. The HiDef video showed three militants exiting a white SUV and running toward a nearby operations room. The video then cuts to show a missile striking the operations room with one militant standing just outside, and the other two believed to be inside. The blast obliterated the structure, sending its roof launching into the air. It was unclear if other militants were already in the room when it was bombed. The video also showed the group targeting a black military vehicle. The report did not say if anyone was inside the vehicle when it was targeted. After the operation, Hezbollah fighter engaged in “fierce clashes” with the jihadis and killed “all of them,” Al-Manar said, showing footage of the battle. The channel said the group belonged to Nusra’s Ghuraba Brigade, adding that a field commander was among those killed. The report comes one day after a security source revealed that six Hezbollah fighters were killed in Qalamoun as they attempted to take the Tallaja hilltop from Nusra militants earlier this week. The source said they were killed in sniper fire Monday.

Headline: Bomb blast kills senior police officer in Egypt’s Sinai, home to an Islamic State affiliate

Egypt’s Interior Ministry says a roadside bomb has killed a senior police officer in the northwestern region of the Sinai Peninsula, home of the country’s Islamic State affiliate. In a statement Wednesday, the ministry says Brig. Gen. Ahmed Ibrahim, who was deputy head of criminal investigations in Egypt’s North Sinai province, was killed on his way back from a joint police and army raid in el-Arish, the provincial capital. The ministry added that a second officer was wounded, without elaborating. The long-restive northwestern region of Sinai has seen a spike in attacks targeting security forces since the military overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013. A local Islamic militant group has pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State group’s leader, turning it into an affiliate of the group.

Syria Headline: Islamic State shoots dead 20 in Palmyra amphitheatre: monitor

Syrian regime strikes against ISIS in and around the ancient city of Palmyra have failed to halt their advance towards Damascus, a monitor said on Sunday. The intense strikes came after the fall of Palmyra, named Tadmor in Arabic, to the militants last week. But so far, the strikes had failed to halt the militants, who advanced towards the capital Damascus and overran major phosphate mines about 70 kilometers south of Palmyra. “ISIS has made further progress on the Tadmor-Damascus highway and grabbed the Khnaifess phosphate mines and nearby houses,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of sources on the group for its reports.

Syria Headline:   The Regime’s Military Capabilities

On May 24, the regime-appointed governor of Homs Province Talal Barazi claimed that regime forces are preparing for a counteroffensive targeting the strategic city of Palmyra after its fall to ISIS on May 20. However, clear indications of a military mobilization have yet to materialize and it remains unclear whether the Assad regime possesses sufficient combat reserves to significantly reverse ISIS’s recent gains. Regime forces are spread thin throughout the country, forcing Assad to rely upon a small number of trusted elite units and deployable paramilitary fighters – the same composition of forces allegedly participating in the operation to retake Palmyra – to react to emergent threats. The Assad regime suffers from several limitations which have had a severe impact upon its military strategy. Regime forces operated under shortages of quality manpower due to desertion, defection, and combat attrition. Consequently, the Assad regime relied upon a constellation of regular and irregular forces throughout 2014 in order to prosecute its offensive campaign and defend its core interests against the Syrian opposition and other threats, including ISIS.

Syria Headline:    Assad pulls air force out of Deir ez-Zour, the third Syrian air base surrendered to ISIS

Just a week after losing the big Palmyra air base to the Islamic State – and with it large stocks of ammo and military equipment – Syrian military and air units Wednesday, May 27, began pulling out of the big air base at Deir ez-Zour. This was Bashar Assad’s last military stronghold in eastern Syria and the last air facility for enabling fighter-bombers to strike ISIS forces in northeastern Syria and the western Iraqi province of Anbar. His surrender of the Deir ez-Zour base is evidence that the Syrian president has run out of fighting strength for defending both his front lines and his air bases. He is also too tied down to be able to transfer reinforcements from front to front. He is therefore pulling in the remnants of his army from across the country for the defense of the capital, Damascus. debkafile’s military sources report that the Islamic State now has in its sights the Syrian army’s biggest air facility, T4 Airbase, which is located on the fast highway linking Homs with Damascus 140 km away. It is home base for the bulk of the air force’s fighters and bombers. In its hangars are an estimated 32 MiG-25 fighters, as well as smaller numbers of MiG-25PDS interceptors, designed for combat with the Israeli air force, MiG-25RBT bombers-cum-surveillance planes; MiG-25PU trainers, which are routinely used to strike rebel forces in crowded built-up areas, and advanced MiG-29SM fighter jets. Stationed there too are 20 advanced Su-24M2 bombers, the strategic backbone of the Syrian air force. T4 Airbase also holds the largest Syrian stocks of guided bombs, air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. In the last few hours, air crews have been frantically removing these warplanes from T4 and distributing them among smaller bases in central Syria, at the cost of their operational effectiveness.

Iraq Headline: Fighting, airstrikes reported near Ramadi as Iraq launches operation to retake city

A major military operation in Iraq to retake the Islamic State-held city of Ramadi was under way Tuesday, as fighting and airstrikes were reported west and south of the city. “Shaping” operations ahead of the counteroffensive began Tuesday, in the form of air strikes, artillery and rocket barrages to rush ISIS out of Ramadi, the Pentagon confirmed. Pentagon Spokesman Col. Steve Warren said they welcomed the news of the counteroffensive. A spokesman for Iraq’s Shiite militias said Tuesday the operation would “not last for a long time” and that Iraqi forces have surrounded Ramadi from three sides, according to The Associated Press. The Pentagon could not confirm reports that Iraqi security forces had surrounded Ramadi. Warren said Iraqi security forces and Shia militias have staged 20 miles east of Ramadi in the town of Habbaniyah.

Iraq Headline: Islamic State launches wave of suicide attacks on Iraqi troops

Islamic State jihadists have unleashed a wave of suicide attacks targeting pro-government troops in western Anbar, a day after Baghdad launched a new offensive to drive them from the province. Up to 17 soldiers were killed in the explosions that took place outside of Fallujah, a town controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant inside the Sunni heartland Anbar. Brigadier General Saad Maan Ibrahim, the spokesman for the Joint Military Command said on Wednesday that the militants had struck near a water control station and a lock system on a canal between Lake Tharthar and the Euphrates River. The troops had been deployed there as part of a new push to try to take Anbar, after the Iraqi army suffered its biggest military defeat there this year in the loss of Ramadi city earlier this month. Brig Gen Ibrahim added that the Islamic State extremists used a sandstorm that engulfed most of Iraq on Tuesday night to launch the deadly wave of bombings. He said it was not clear how many suicide attackers were involved in the bombings but they hit the military from multiple directions. The attacks took place just hours after the ministry of defence announced the new mission.

Headline: ISIS Shows Off A New Potential Source Of Funding

ISIS is touting its newfound control of giant phosphate mines in Syria as the latest multi-million dollar funding source for its activities around the world. The Khnaifess mines, which sit along the main highway between Damascus and Palymra, the ancient city overrun by ISIS last week, are the second largest phosphate mines in the country. Syria has some of the largest reserves in the world, in normal times they produced around $60 million in revenue a year. The Damascus propaganda branch of the Islamic State has published a series of photos of the phosphate mines as the latest example of its growing power. It is unclear if ISIS has the required logistics and expertise to operate the mines, let alone export the phosphate, given that a significant percentage of Syria’s phosphates is bought by the EU. Syria is among the world’s largest exporters of the rock, but the war has marred its ability to mine and market its supply. ISIS has sold oil and antiquities on the black market and relies on those sales, along with protection money and local taxes to fund its system. ISIS has in the past advertized for engineers to come work on the refineries it has captured, in some cases offering salaries starting at $200,000.

Headline:   Turks Believe Israel is Biggest Threat to their Country, Followed by US

A recent survey conducted in Turkey revealed that Turks believe Israel and the U.S. pose the biggest threats to their country, Turkish publication Today’s Zaman reported on Wednesday. İstanbul’s Kadir Has University polled 1,000 people in April across Turkish cities. When asked which country they see as the biggest threat to Turkey, 42.6 percent of respondents said Israel while 35.3 percent said the U.S. The same countries received 37.1 and 41.7 disapproval rates, respectively, during the same survey in 2013. Following Israel and the U.S. was Syria with 22.1 percent and Armenia with 20.3 percent. France warned on Wednesday it was ready to block a final deal between Iran and the six major powers on Iran’s nuclear program unless Tehran provided inspectors access to all installations, including military sites. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, last week ruled out international inspection of Iran’s military sites or access to nuclear scientists under any agreement. Iran’s military leaders echoed his remarks. “France will not accept (a deal) if it is not clear that inspections can be done at all Iranian installations, including military sites,” French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told lawmakers in Paris. As talks resumed in Vienna on Wednesday to bridge gaps in negotiating positions before a June 30 deadline, the United States said it was not considering an extension, despite comments from France and Iran indicating wiggle room. “We’re not contemplating any extension beyond June 30,” State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke told reporters in Washington, saying the United States believed it was possible to meet the self-imposed deadline.

Four Taliban insurgents armed with assault rifles and a grenade launcher stormed a guesthouse in the diplomatic quarter of the Afghan capital overnight and held out for hours until they were killed by government forces early on Wednesday, officials said. No casualties other than the attackers were reported, Afghanistan’s deputy interior minister General Ayoub Salangi said. Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said the guesthouse was owned by a prominent Afghan political family that includes Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani. Prior to the attack, he said armed men who had been protesting outside a session of the Tobruk government’s House of Representatives tried to storm the building, firing shots into the air and demanding al-Thinni be removed from office. They were “threatening to kill the prime minister and force the House to sack him,” Said said. He identified the men as being funded by “corrupted political financiers” linked to powerful Tobruk tribal leaders, without elaborating.

Al Shabaab gunmen attacked Kenyan police vehicles near Somalia’s border, injuring at least five officers and burning five cars, police said on Tuesday. Two officers were critically injured and three others sustained minor injuries in the attack in Garissa County, national Police Chief J.K. Boinnet said in a statement. Garissa police commander Shadrack Maithya said at least 13 police officers who went missing during the attack have been accounted for. Two of the attackers were killed, he said. The interior ministry said no police officials were killed, dismissing earlier accounts by two officials that several missing colleagues were believed to have been killed. Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper reported that at least 20 police officers were feared dead. Police later said that in the confusion of the attacks that the worst was feared. The injured officers were part of team of more than 20 officers traveling in three pick-up trucks to recover a firearm lost by one officer whose car had hit a land mine. Boinnet said there was a heavy exchange of gunfire with the Islamic militants. Al Shabaab, a Somali extremist group with links to Al Qaeda, said on its radio station that it carried out the attack.

Many of the vehicles have number plates and identifying marks removed while many of the servicemen had taken insignia off their fatigues. As such, they match the appearance of some of the forces spotted in eastern Ukraine, which Kiev and its Western allies allege are covert Russian detachments. The scene at the base on the Kuzminsky firing range, around 50 km (30 miles) from the border, offers some of the clearest evidence to date of what appeared to be a concerted Russian military build-up in the area. Earlier this month, NATO military commander General Philip Breedlove said he believed the separatists were taking advantage of a ceasefire that came into force in February to re-arm and prepare for a new offensive. However, he gave no specifics. Russia denies that its military is involved in the conflict in Ukraine’s east, where Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting forces loyal to the pro-Western government in Kiev.

Meanwhile, The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham conducted two major bombings on Shia mosques in the Arabian Peninsula today through its affiliates in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. ISIS Claimed responsibility for an IED explosion that injured at least 13 Shia worshippers during Friday prayers in the al Sayyah Mosque in Sana’a, Yemen. ISIS also claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing on the Shia Imam Ali mosque in al-Qadeeh in the Shi’a Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. This latter attack killed at least 20 individuals and wounding dozens more. In statements circulated by ISIS’s supporters on Twitter after the attacks, ISIS reportedly asserted that it would “expel all the unbelievers from the Arabian Peninsula.” ISIS’s threat to Saudi Arabia is not new. ISIS declared its intent to attack both Saudi Arabia and Yemen in late 2014. Over the course of this year, I SIS has escalated its activities in both countries in order to increase regional disorder and undermine the Saudi-led Arab coalition. Today’s two attacks were possibly coordinated, reflecting an acceleration in an ongoing campaign by ISIS to destabilize Saudi Arabia and gain power in Yemen.

The Talisman Sabre biennial exercises, to be held in locations around Australia, will encompass maritime operations, amphibious landings, special forces tactics and urban warfare. “I think the U.S. is trying to get its allies to do more,” said Euan Graham, director of the International Security Program at the Lowy Institute in Sydney. “There is an obvious symmetry between Japan as the upper anchor of the Western Pacific alliance and … Australia as the southern anchor.” All three nations have said they were concerned about freedom of movement through the seas and air in the disputed South China Sea, where China is creating seven artificial islands in the Spratly archipelago, a vital shipping corridor. Meanwhile, China is to focus on projecting its military presence beyond its borders at sea, according to a strategy document. Two Christian pastors from South Sudan who traveled north to Sudan and were arrested on charges of spying could face the death penalty when their trial begins next week, according to their attorneys. Yat Michael Ruot and Peter Yein Reith, both Presbyterian pastors from the breakaway Christian nation of South Sudan, are being held by Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services on charges of undermining the constitution and espionage. Their supporters say their arrest and pending trial is just the latest effort by the militant Islamist government in Khartoum to stamp out Christianity. “I’m fearful that they will execute these pastors for practicing their faith,” said David Curry, CEO of Open Doors USA, a group dedicated to advocating for the victims of Christian persecution. The pair also was charged with “inciting organized groups” and “offending Islamic beliefs,” which call for imprisonment. The trial was set to begin Tuesday, but was postponed to May 31.

A United States Marine was convicted at a court-martial for refusing to remove a Bible verse on her computer – a verse of Scripture the military determined “could easily be seen as contrary to good order and discipline.” The plight of Lance Corporal Monifa Sterling seems unbelievable – a member of the Armed Forces criminally prosecuted for displaying a slightly altered passage of Scripture from the Old Testament: “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.” Sterling, who represented herself at trial, was convicted February 1, 2014 in a court-martial at Camp Lejune, North Carolina after she refused to obey orders from a staff sergeant to remove the Bible verses from her desk. She was found guilty of failing to go to her appointed place of duty, disrespect toward a superior commissioned officer, and four specifications of disobeying the lawful order of a noncommissioned officer. Both lower court and the appellate court ruled that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act did not apply to her case because displaying a Bible verse does not constitute religious exercise.

The Egyptian army says it has destroyed the openings of more than 500 underground tunnels during a six-month military operation on its eastern borders with the Gaza Strip. The spokesperson for Egypt’s army spoke to the state-owned daily al-Ahram in an interview published on Monday, saying that the military has discovered the openings of 521 underground tunnels connecting Egypt with the Gaza Strip. Egypt’s armed forces began a large-scale military crackdown in the restive eastern province of North Sinai last October when a huge and highly co-ordinated militant attack killed more than 30 soldiers. Egypt’s military spokesperson, General Mohammed Samir, said tunnels had been discovered with openings up to 2.8 kilometres from the border. Samir also said authorities had confiscated 6,097 weapons, as well as 2,350 kilogrammes of high explosives. With chaos reigning in Sinai, and reports that locals accused of “collaborating” with the government are frequently executed by powerful militia groups, Egypt’s President Sisi has vowed to do more to stamp out militancy in the area. In the third of a series of monthly televised speeches on 12 May, Sisi promised that the fight against militancy in Sinai will be “comprehensive,” and will extend beyond the current military campaign.

Syria Headline:  Blast in Syria pro-government bastion Latakia kills 4

At least four people were killed in a blast in the Syrian government stronghold of Latakia on Monday, but there were conflicting reports about what caused the explosion. It comes amid heightened fears of attacks in the coastal region after a rebel alliance that includes the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front last month seized Jisr al-Shughur in neighboring Idlib province. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and sources on the ground both reported the blast in the city of Latakia in the coastal province of the same name. An AFP correspondent in the city saw flames and a column of smoke rising after hearing what appeared to be an explosion in the Mar Taqla neighborhood. At the scene of the blast, residents said those killed were a father and his son and daughter, along with their female neighbor. The explosion set fire to the family’s apartment and partially collapsed the building’s roof. The Britain-based Observatory also reported that the blast had killed four people, among them two children. But there were differing accounts of what caused with the blast, with officials in the city refusing to comment and residents saying the cause was unclear. The Observatory said the blast was the result of a drone that crashed into the city after being hit by a rocket fired from a ship offshore in the Mediterranean.

On Sunday, the pro-Syrian regime helicopters dropped several barrel bombs on the city of Deir ez-Zor, northeastern Syria, resulted in the death of at least 30 civilians, including women and children, local sources reported. In the meantime, the radial group of the Islamic State (IS/ISIL) executed 27 civilians in the province. The victims were beheaded on charges of apostasy and leaking confidential information about the group to the regime. Activists told ARA News that the province witnessed a campaign of executions for three consecutive days in the Kharita town and the villages of al-Masrab, Hawyej Shamiya, and Muhamida in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor. The village of Hatla and the town of Khasham in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor have also seen the beheading of at least 6 civilians by the radical group on Sunday.

Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri has said that it’s important for the Iraqi government to have strong coordination with Turkey for any Mosul operation to free the city from Islamic State (IS). Turkey’s military says suspected Kurdish militants have fired two mortar rounds at a military base in the country’s southeast region, prompting the military to fire back in retaliation. He proposes an international fighting force of about 5,000 soldiers, and notes that ISIS – unlike the Taliban or other “insurgents,” as he calls them – is using “conventional” military tactics not unlike a regular Army. Qassem Suleimani, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards` commander of foreign operations, hit out at Washington after Pentagon chief Ashton Carter said Iraqi forces “failed to fight” in Ramadi, which has fallen to IS. “Mr. (Barack) Obama, what is the distance between Ramadi and Al-Asad base where US planes are based?” Suleimani said in a speech late Sunday in the southern province of Kerman carried by state news agency IRNA. How can you be in that country under the pretext of protecting the Iraqis and do nothing? This is no more than being an accomplice in a plot,” said Suleimani. According to media reports, Iran has military advisers in Iraq and Syria and provides financial and military support to the governments of both countries in their battle against Sunni extremists. Iranian media says Suleimani has been active in Iraq, particularly at the end of March when Iran-backed Shi’ite militias helped to recapture the city of Tikrit. In his remarks on Sunday, Carter said that the US-led air campaign against IS, which controls large swathes of Iraq and Syria, was still working. He said Iraqi forces had “showed no will to fight” even though they outnumbered their opponents, leading to Baghdad`s worst defeat in almost a year. But Suleimani argued that the US had “no will to fight Daesh,” using an Arabic acronym for IS. Later, Sangin’s deputy police chief, Haji Bari, said authorities recovered the corpses of at least 13 slain police officers, while 15 had been wounded. Such contradictory casualty figures are common amid an ongoing attack. “We are in control of 80 percent of the checkpoints and are currently fighting with Taliban at two checkpoints,” Bari said. “The Taliban numbers are high and they are attacking with full force. This level of force shows they are in a strong position to fight back.”

The Sudanese government denied on Monday it was supporting rebels in South Sudan after it accused Khartoum of supplying arms to the insurgents threatening its oil fields. Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ali al-Sadiq told the official SUNA news agency that his country has “no interest in such an intervention.” He said instability in South Sudan would send more refugees into Sudan and create of hotspots along its border. South Sudan military officials have alleged that Khartoum provides weapons and ammunition to a defected army leader in its Upper Nile state. Rebels are threatening South Sudan’s remaining functional oil fields. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 after the region was engulfed in years of bloody civil war with Sudanese government troops. Also Monday, the country’s journalists’ union said that authorities had confiscated at least 14 newspapers without giving any notice or justification. In a statement protesting the move against press freedom, it said that four of the papers were ordered shut down entirely. A similar incident occurred last February, when 14 daily newspapers were confiscated in a single day. The union said it would be following the case and urging authorities to rescind the order.

Police in riot gear made 71 arrests Saturday as protesters stormed the streets of Cleveland after a judge found a white city police officer not guilty in the deaths of two unarmed black suspects killed in a barrage of police gunfire. The protesters gathered in downtown Cleveland and west side neighborhoods after the acquittal of patrolmen Michael Brelo. In a news conference Sunday morning, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said people were arrested after a day of mostly peaceful protests turned more aggressive. Officials said some protesters became violent and turned on bystanders, including some who pepper-sprayed patrons sitting at outdoor cafes downtown. Williams said that another protester threw a restaurant sign at a patron, striking him in the head. He says bystanders were also accosted in at least one other instance.

Boko Haram fighters have hacked to death 10 people in a remote village in northeastern Nigeria. The attack happened in the early hours of Friday as residents were sleeping, officials say. News of the attack only emerged on Monday because of the remote location of the village in northern Adamawa state, and communications difficulties. The attack is the latest by Boko Haram in the region, which was declared “clear” of insurgents in March by the military. A number of villages in the area have been hit as troops try to flush out militants from their Sambisa Forest stronghold, just across the border in neighbouring Borno state. Soldiers have in recent weeks rescued hundreds of women and children from the forest after they were kidnapped during raids. On Sunday, 31 people – most children under 12 – who were freed last week were brought to the Malkohi camp outside the northeastern city of Yola, relief officials said. On Monday, defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said troops had thwarted an attack on Mafa, 50 kilometres east of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri. About 30 Boko Haram fighters were killed and “many others” wounded, he added.

The Burundi crisis began last month when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he will run for a controversial third term. The United States has also called for authorities to lift a ban on further protests, allow independent radio stations to resume broadcasting and stop using the term “insurgents” to refer to peaceful protesters. An opposition leader, Frederick Bamvuginyumvira, said Sunday that his party can no longer hold talks with the government.

In the city of Taiz, the officials said 13 civilians died and some 200 others were wounded after a truck carrying oil was hit by crossfire and caused a raging fire. Greece will be unable to find the €1.6bn (£1.1bn) sum it is due to hand the International Monetary Fund (IMF) next month, one of the country’s ministers has admitted. Nikos Voutsis, the Greek minister of the interior, said that “this money will not be given and is not there to be given”, speaking on Mega TV. The Greek state is due to hand over the money in four installments in June, as part of its obligations for its 2011 bail-out. Mr Voutsis’ comments came as Yanis Varoufakis, the Greek finance minister, told The Andrew Marr Show that if progress was not made, it would be the beginning of the end for the euro project. The finance minister said that the Syriza-led Greek government has now “made enormous strides at reaching a deal”, and that it is now up to the ECB, IMF and EU “to do their bit” and “meet us one-quarter of the way”. One possible alternative if talks do not progress is that Greece would leave the common currency and return to the drachma. This would be “catastrophic”, Mr Varoufakis warned, and not just for Greece itself. “It would be a disaster for everyone involved, it would be a disaster primarily for the Greek social economy, but it would also be the beginning of the end for the common currency project in Europe,” he said.

Headline:  Heat wave: Death toll crosses 551 in Andhra Pradesh, 213 in Telangana

The death toll from a severe heat wave rose to 551 in Andhra Pradesh and 213 in Telangana on Monday as the meteorological office predicted similar conditions for the next two weeks. 25 deaths were reported in Srikakulam, 61 in Vizianagaram, 90 in East Godavari, 3 in West Godavari, 36 in Krishna, 104 in Guntur districts of the state. Hospitals in both the states have been inundated with patients suffering from sun stroke and dehydration from the intense heat reaching up to 47 degrees Celsius. Frequent power cuts and reduced water supply at one hospital in Visakhapatnam exacerbated the situation and some complained that fans in the hospital were not functioning. “My brother Kishore is admitted here. He suffered sun stroke while going to work yesterday morning. His condition became serious. People said that the temperature touched 45 degree Celsius yesterday. It was extremely hot. I have never experienced such intense heat in Vizag before. The government needs to take precautions to help people in this situation,” caretaker Rajesh said. Meanwhile, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials in Hyderabad said that despite some rain predicted, the acute heat could continue for the next two weeks.

Headline: Twister kills 10 in Mexico; 12 missing in Central Texas flooding

A tornado ripped through a city on the U.S.-Mexico border on Monday, killing at least 10 people as first responders in Central Texas searched for a dozen people believed to be missing after the vacation home they were staying in was swept away in torrential flooding. The Texas cities of San Marcos and Wimberley suffered extensive damage as severe storms displaced more than 2,000 residents throughout the state, leaving 12 missing in Hays County. The search for the missing came as the Mexican city of Ciudad Acuna was devastated by a twister at daybreak Monday. Officials in Mexico said at least 10 were killed in the tornado, the Associated Press reported. The city, population 100,000, is across the border from Del Rio, Texas. The grim toll comes as a line of storms this weekend have wreaked havoc from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes.

Headline:  New Zealand hit by biggest storm on Earth

A storm blasting Antarctic weather over New Zealand is currently the biggest storm on earth according to WeatherWatch. The low stretches from just south of Fiji to Antarctica’s ice shelf, but only 20 per cent of the storm is affecting New Zealand. WeatherWatch.co.nz said the forecast air pressure at its centre over the next 24 hours would be greater than that of Hurricane Katrina when it made landfall in 2005. “The depth of this storm south of New Zealand is up there with some of the biggest hurricanes we’ve seen. It’s a really big storm.” However, WeatherWatch.co.nz said only the storm’s edges were affecting New Zealand – its centre lay around 1000 to 1500kms to our south east. Southland, Otago and Banks Peninsula woke this morning to the heaviest dumping of snow so far this year. Overnight, areas of Central Otago and Southland saw up to 30 cm of snow, according to Metservice.

Headline:  Saudi Arabia attack: Islamic State claims Shia mosque bombing

The Islamic State (IS) group says it was behind a suicide bombing on a Shia mosque in Saudi Arabia that killed at least 10 people. The attack in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province is the first to be claimed by the Saudi branch of IS, which was formally established last November. The claim was posted on Twitter with an image of the bomber by an account that is a reliable source on the group. IS has previously threatened to attack Shia Muslims in Saudi Arabia. Witnesses reported a huge blast at the Imam Ali mosque in the village of al-Qadeeh, in Qatif governorate during Friday prayers. A doctor at the hospital told the BBC that at least 10 people were killed and about 70 injured, “some very critically”.

Headline: Attack from Yemen kills Saudi citizen, injures three

Shells fired from Yemen have reportedly killed one Saudi citizen and left three others injured in Saudi Arabia’s Asir region, a Saudi civil defense ministry spokesman said late Thursday. Brigadier General Mohammad al-Aasemi said the Saudi civil defense authority received reports of shelling from neighboring Yemen on Thursday evening, the state-owned Saudi Press Agency reported. Al-Aasemi said the shells targeted the village of al-Hisn near Dhahran al-Janoob in Asir Province. The attacks killed a Saudi citizen, and left three injured, including a Saudi and two expats, SPA reported. The injured were rushed to hospital, he added. Meanwhile, more shells were fired from Yemen on Friday towards the Saudi border province of Najran.

Syria Headline:   Islamic State seizes more than half of Syria

The Islamic State has seized more than half of Syria after taking full control of the town of Palmyra and its ancient ruins, activists said Thursday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the extremists had seized more than 36,000 square miles of the country and had also taken control of “the vast majority” of its gas and oil fields. USA TODAY could not independently confirm the information. Bebars al-Talawy, an activist in the central province of Homs, told the AP the militants now control the ruins at Palmyra, a UNESCO world heritage site famous for its 2,000-year-old Roman-era colonnades and priceless artifacts. Both activists said Thursday that the Islamic State has not damaged the ruins so far. Al-Talawy said the government had recently transferred thousands of inmates from the town’s prison to a jail near the capital of Damascus, but added the extremists had freed some of the prisoners who remained inside. Syrian state television said late Wednesday that pro-government forces had withdrawn from Palmyra after evacuating most civilians there, Reuters reported.

Homs province: SOHR was informed that no less than 48 soldiers in regime forces were killed while 150 others were wounded during clashes against the IS around Jazal field near Shaer field in the eastern countryside of Homs in the 18th,19th, and 20th of May/2015, while no less than 30 militants in IS were killed during these clashes. IS gained control on more areas in Syria especially in Homs province, taking control on Tadmur and al-Sokhna cities in addition to the T3 station and the fields of al-Ark and al-Heil, leading to the death and injury of hundreds of soldiers in regime forces. Areas near al-Taifour military airport are witnessing forming of IS militants as it took control on al-Sawana area on Tadmur-Homs road after clashes against regime forces.

Iraq Headline: ISIS seizes last government controlled border crossing between Syria and Iraq

The Islamic State militant group has seized Syria’s last border crossing with Iraq after Syrian government forces withdrew, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said on Thursday. The al-Tanf crossing, known as al-Waleed in Iraq, is in Syria’s Homs province, where Islamic State on Wednesday seized the historic city of Palmyra from government forces. An Islamic State fighter contacted by Reuters confirmed the group had taken control of the crossing, which is a 240 km (150 mile) drive from Palmyra.

Iraq Headline: The US and Iraqi and Syrian armies go to pieces against ISIS drive. Israel, Jordan, Saudis alarmed

The fall of Damascus and Baghdad, or large slices thereof, into the rapacious hands of the Islamic State, is no longer a debatable subject of strategic forecasts. Today, the capital cities of Syria and Iraq are within the Islamists’ grasp. The Middle East is about to pay the price for President Barack Obama’s single-minded obsession with a US détente with Tehran and a nuclear accord. It is the end product of Washington’s insistence on playing down ISIS as a formidable opponent and contention that the meager US-led coalition air campaign destroyed much of its operational capabilities, which proved to be an illusion. Equally fallacious was Obama’s trust in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps and its terrorist arm, the Al Qods Brigades, to curtail the Islamist momentum. The Islamists have until now held back from an all-out offensive to capture Baghdad for a variety of tactical considerations. A city of this size is a bit too large for the Islamists to swallow, hold and administer. It suits the jihadists better to hold the town to siege and under constant terrorist harassment. The most knowledgeable sources in the region can’t explain what part the US Central Command is playing as a military factor in any of these conflicts – in particular, Gen. John Allen, whom Obama last year named Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS. Some account for their low-to-vanishing profile by their having been preoccupied in preparing a grand campaign for the recovery of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, which is under ISIS rule. Today, this plan looks like a pipe dream. ISIS has caused a Middle East earthquake after another by capturing Ramadi in Iraq and Palmyra in Syria in a matter of days. Their alarmed neighbors in Jerusalem, Amman and Riyadh have been forced to conclude that their borders are in danger – not just from Iran, but also from ISIS, and they will have to confront these perils on their own.

Iraq Headline: ISIS seizes town in Iraq’s Anbar

A tribal leader says ISIS militants have seized another town in Iraq’s western Anbar province, less than a week after capturing the provincial capital, Ramadi. Sheikh Rafie al-Fahdawi said Friday that the small town of Husseiba fell overnight. He says police and tribal fighters withdrew after running out of ammunition. Husseiba is about seven kilometers east of Ramadi, where ISIS militants routed Iraqi forces in their most significant advance in nearly a year. The Iraqi government plans to launch a counteroffensive in Anbar involving Iranian-backed Shiite militias, which have played a key role in rolling back ISIS elsewhere in the country. The presence of the militias could however fuel sectarian tensions in the Sunni province, where anger at the Shiite-led government runs deep.

Iraq Headline: Russia Offers Military Aid to Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi on Thursday met with President Vladimir Putin who offered Iraq army Russian military aid in its battle against Islamic State militants.   “We are expanding cooperation with Iraq in the area of military technology,” Putin said at the start of talks with Abadi in the Kremlin. He hailed Iraq as an “old and reliable partner in the region”. “Iraq has been our longtime and reliable partner in the region. Despite all the hardships in the world economy and difficulties in the region, our relations have been developing successfully,” Putin said. The Russian president said that Moscow has been implementing major projects in Iraq and Russian investments there are estimated at billions of dollars. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters ahead of Abadi and Putin talks that Moscow will make “all efforts” to strengthen Iraq’s military capability and help the country in pushing back Islamic State from seized territories. “We have very close and tight military-technical cooperation [with Iraq],” he said.

Headline: Isis claims it could buy its first nuclear weapon from Pakistan within 12 months

Isis has used the latest issue of its propaganda magazine Dabiq to suggest the group is expanding so rapidly it could buy its first nuclear weapon within a year. The hyperbolic article, which the group attributes to the British hostage John Cantlie, claims Isis has transcended its roots as “the most explosive Islamic ‘group’ in the modern world” to evolve into “the most explosive Islamic movement the modern world has ever seen” in less than twelve months. Photojournalist John Cantlie is regularly used in the terror group’s propaganda and has appeared in a number of videos, including a YouTube series called “Lend Me Your Ears”. He has been held a hostage by Isis for more than two years. It admits that such a scenario is “far-fetched” but warns: “It’s the sum of all fears for Western intelligence agencies and it’s infinitely more possible today than it was just one year ago. “And if not a nuke, what about a few thousand tons of ammonium nitrate explosive? That’s easy enough to make.”

Turkish police launched an operation on Friday to detain dozens of people including businessmen seen as supporters of U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ally-turned-foe, a provincial governor’s office said. Moves against what Erdogan calls a parallel structure or terrorist group within the state had until now focused on suspected Gulen sympathisers in the police, judiciary, media and a bank founded by his followers. Erdogan, seeking overwhelming support for the AK Party he founded at June elections which he hopes will pave the way for broader presidential powers, accuses Gulen of among other things engineering a graft scandal to discredit and unseat him. Friday’s police operation focused on the central city of Konya but included 19 provinces. It targeted 66 people, including businessmen and former police officers, the Konya governor’s office said. It said in a statement that the investigation related to allegations including membership of what it termed the “Fethullahist Terror Group” and violating the secrecy of an investigation, without giving details. The raids were triggered by the arrest of a Konya-based lawyer and his secretary as they sought to leave Turkey earlier this month, it said.

The Turkish Ambassador to Iraq has discussed the opening of Turkish consulates in Kirkuk and Basra in southern Iraq, with the Iraqi Foreign Minister. According to a statement released by the Iraqi Foreign Minister’s office, on Wednesday May 20^th, , Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari met with the Turkish Ambassador to Iraq Faruk Kaymakcı and discussed the security and political situations in Iraq as well as the diplomatic relations between Iraq and Turkey. Al-Jaafari has declared that the neighbouring countries’ military support is vital for Iraq to confront and defeat the Islamic State (IS) militants. “Turkish ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı discussed the both countries’ interests and the diplomatic relation between Turkey and Iraq with al-Jaafari,” reads the statement. However, Kaymakcı has asked al-Jaafari to approve the proposal of opening Turkish consulates in Kirkuk in northern Iraq and Basra in the south of the country.

Headline:    UN accuses South Sudan of targeting base protecting civilians

The United Nations Friday accused South Sudan’s rebel and government forces of targeting one of its bases sheltering civilians during a flareup of fighting, and demanded that those responsible face justice. Senior peacekeeping official Edmond Mulet told reporters that 22 shells had hit the base in Melut, in Upper Nile State, over the past two days, killing eight civilians, in what could amount to a war crime. Mulet said he had been in touch with both the government and the rebel sides to urge them to “stop targeting U.N. premises and our protection sites” and stressed that the field commanders “know where the protection site is.” A formal note has been sent to the U.N. Security Council over the violence targeting the U.N. base at Melut, which is sheltering 1,600 civilians. A U.N. investigation is under way to determine who fired at the compound, said Mulet, the assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping.

The militants have effectively taken over former dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s home city of Sirte as they exploit a civil war between two rival governments to expand in North Africa. “Every night they open fire on us,” said Abu Shebar, who with comrades on Sirte’s western outskirts holds the last position of troops belonging to one of the two warring Libyan governments, the General National Congress, which controls the capital Tripoli and most of the west of the country. “They are only active at night,” he said, pointing to the militants’ position in a house just down the road blocked by sandbags. He sleeps in a shed next to his firing positions where used tank shells litter the ground. Libya, which has descended into near anarchy since NATO warplanes helped rebels overthrow Gaddafi in a 2011 civil war, is now the third big stronghold for the Sunni Islamist group, also known as ISIS or ISIL, which declared a Caliphate to rule over all Muslims from territory it holds in Syria and Iraq. Islamic State fighters became a major force last year in Derna, a jihadi bastion in Libya’s east, and quickly spread to the biggest eastern city Benghazi, where they have conducted suicide bombings on streets divided among armed factions.

Anti-government demonstrators have taken to the streets in Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura, despite a harsh crackdown by police to end weeks of protests. The protesters gathered in the capital’s Cibitoke and Mutakura districts on Friday. The demonstrators said they were attempting to organize more protests in other districts. The protests come a day after two demonstrators were killed and eight others were injured in clashes in the capital. Gunshots were also heard overnight in the flashpoint district of Musaga. The country has been witnessing clashes since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his plans to run for a third term in late April.

There was no word on casualties among the separatists, who Kiev, NATO and Western countries say are being provided with arms and men by Russia, something Moscow denies. Ukraine’s largest steel company, Metinvest, said one worker had been killed and two wounded when its Avdiyivka coke plant, which is on government-controlled territory, was been hit by heavy shelling on Thursday.

Voters in the Republic of Ireland are taking part in a referendum on legalising same-sex marriage on Friday. More than 3.2m people are being asked whether they want to amend the country’s constitution to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry. Polling stations opened at 07:00 BST with voting continuing until 22:00 BST and counting due to start on Saturday morning. Same-sex marriage is currently legal in 19 countries worldwide. Votes have already been cast in some islands as well as hospitals, hospices and nursing homes. Irish citizens who are registered are allowed to vote, but there is no postal voting. Many people returned to Ireland to cast their votes. They will be asked whether they agree with the statement: “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex”. A priest of the Syriac Catholic Church in the western Syrian city of Homs was kidnapped Thursday along with one of his colleagues, the NGO l’Oeuvre d’Orient told AFP Friday. Father Jacques Mourad was seized with another Christian originating from Aleppo, who was helping the priest. “The priest was kidnapped by three masked people in the early afternoon at his Mar Elian Monastery in Qaryatayn, while he was preparing to welcome an expected influx of refugees from Palmyra,” said the NGO. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group, confirmed that “two men, at least one of them a priest,” were kidnapped by armed men “near Qaryatayn, in the Homs province”. Mourad succeeded the Italian Jesuit Priest Paolo Dall’Oglio as the head of the Mar Moussa Monastery, which is linked to Mar Elian. Dall’Oglio has been missing for nearly two years after being kidnapped in Syria’s northern Aleppo province. The NGO said that Mourad worked to foster inter-religious dialogue, and worked with both Christians and Muslims.

A “DRAMATIC, violent, jarring and jolting” earthquake has struck the UK near Kent, waking residents in the middle of the night with the shock of their lives. The unexpected tremor was felt across Britain. The British Geological Survey confirmed the quake struck at 2:52am British Standard Time with an epicentre 7km south of Ramsgate near Kent. Headline:  Report: Swiss court orders Israel to pay Iran $1.1 billion in oil pipeline dispute

An Israeli oil company, the Eilat Ashkelon Pipeline Company, has been ordered to pay $1.1 billion in compensation to Iran by a Swiss court, the official Iranian news agency IRNA reported on Wednesday. In response, Israel clarified that it will not pay the debt to the Iranians. “Without referring to the matter at hand, we’ll note that according to the Trading with the Enemy Act it is forbidden to transfer money to the enemy, including the Iranian national oil company,” the Finance Ministry statement said. The compensation ruling follows a long-running legal battle between the two countries over the revenues from an oil pipeline joint venture that dates back to before the Islamic Revolution. IRNA cited an “informed source” at Iran’s Presidential Center for Legal Affairs for its information about the court’s ruling. The joint venture between the two countries, which began under the Shah of Iran in 1968, was a project for selling Iranian oil to Europe via Israel. The oil was shipped from Iran to Eilat and then transported to the Mediterranean seaport of Ashkelon via the newly constructed Trans-Israel Pipeline. The jointly-owned pipeline was effectively nationalized by Israel after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, after which Iran turned from being Israel’s ally to its enemy, and Iran’s assets were expropriated.

The Lebanese Army pounded jihadi hideouts on the outskirts of Arsal Tuesday, as fresh clashes erupted in the area between ISIS and Al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front. A security source told The Daily Star that Army units located in the northeast region of Wadi Rafeq shelled jihadi positions deep in the outskirts, which comprise an area of around 400 square kilometers. Large numbers of ISIS and Nusra militants operate in the area, which is connected to the Qalamoun hills where Hezbollah and the Syrian army have been carrying out a military campaign against jihadis for two weeks. The source said that Nusra and ISIS fighters engaged in sporadic clashes Tuesday, following similar fighting the previous day. Tensions between the jihadi rivals have soared in recent weeks, with the Nusra Front-led Army of Conquest declaring last week that it would “eradicate ISIS” from the region for harassing and attacking other Syrian rebel groups. On Monday, Hezbollah and Syrian troops pushed further into Qalamoun from south of the outskirts of Arsal, prompting the militants to flee north.

The Russian embassy in the Syrian capital of Damascus was shelled on Tuesday, with Moscow stating that it considers the attack on its diplomatic mission an act of terror. Two mortar rounds landed on the premises of the Russian Embassy in the afternoon, “one of them fell near the main entrance, the other hit an administrative building,” Asiya Turuchiyeva embassy’s spokeswoman, told RIA Novosti. There were no fatalities or injuries as a result of the mortar attack as it happened during the lunch break, the spokeswoman added. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the shells were fired from the Jobar district of Damascus, which is controlled by “illegal armed groups.” “We treat the incident as terrorist act, aimed against the Russian Embassy. We strongly condemn its perpetrators, organizers and instigators. We reaffirm our solidarity with the Syrian authorities in their efforts to combat the terrorist threat in the territory of Syria,” Aleksandr Lukashevich, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman, said.

Syrian activists say that Islamic State extremists have seized almost full control of the ancient town of Palmyra, though it remained unclear how close to the famed archaeological site they have come. The Syrian Observatory for human rights reported that government forces collapsed in the face of IS attacks and withdrew from the town late on Wednesday. A media collective for Palmyra also says that IS was now in control of most of the town. It’s not immediately clear how close the militants are to the ruins, which are just southwest of the town.

Iraqi troops abandoned dozens of U.S. military vehicles, including tanks, armored personnel carriers and artillery pieces when they fled Islamic State fighters in Ramadi on Sunday, the Pentagon said Tuesday. The documents include dozens of letters, some from  bin Laden himself, as well as accounting information and even what appears to be an application form for prospective Al Qaeda members. That form, which asks a series of detailed questions, includes the line: “Who should we contact in case you became a martyr?” The correspondence itself shows bin Laden continued to be engaged from his hideout and sought to direct operations. Shortly before he was killed in the May 2011 raid, a letter shows him celebrating the Arab Spring revolutions which had toppled Tunisia’s leader at that point and were mounting in several other countries.

Ukraine’s president has told the BBC his country is now in a “real war” with Russia – and that Ukrainians should prepare for a Russian offensive. Petro Poroshenko told the BBC’s Fergal Keane he did not trust his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, but had no option but to negotiate with him. The Kremlin said it did not trust Mr Poroshenko either and accused Ukraine of “broken commitments”. Meanwhile Ukraine has charged two men it accuses of being Russian soldiers. Russia denies Western accusations that it has sent regular troops and armour to help rebels in eastern Ukraine. The United Nations says at least 6,000 people have been killed since fighting started in eastern Ukraine in April 2014. A car bomb exploded in the parking lot of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Justice on Tuesday, killing at least five people and wounding dozens as civil servants in Kabul were leaving work for the day, officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the third attack targeting justice system employees this month, saying the insurgents would continue to kill “slave” judges and prosecutors. The huge explosion sent black smoke billowing above the city and was strong enough to rattle windows several kilometers away in Kabul’s diplomatic district. Police said the suicide bomber detonated a car laden with explosives. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the insurgents considered Afghan courts a tool of the U.S.-backed Afghan government and accused them of conspiring in mistreatment of detainees. “Based on this, the slave administration prosecutors, judges and personal of Ministry of Justice have been our target, and our attacks will continue while their cruel activities continues,” Mujahid said in an emailed statement. The Taliban had already attacked employees of Afghanistan’s justice system twice this month. It was also the fifth major attack to hit the Afghan capital in a little over two weeks, coinciding with a new insurgent offensive across the country.

South Sudan’s army has captured a key rebel enclave in the northern battleground state of Unity, the information minister said Wednesday, after an almost month-long assault marred by accusations of rampant human rights abuses. “Leer is fully controlled by the government — in fact the whole of Unity State is now under the government,” Information Minister Michael Makuei told AFP. The government assault that began late April is one of the heaviest offensives in the 17-month long civil war and has cut off over 650,000 people from aid, with gunmen raping, torching towns and looting relief supplies, according to the United Nations and aid agencies. Soldiers have been pushing south from the government-held town of Bentiu, state capital of Unity state, towards the town of Leer. There was no confirmation from rebel forces that the town had been taken. Fighting in South Sudan broke out in December 2013 when President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar of attempting a coup, setting off a cycle of retaliatory killings across the country.

In response, war planes loyal to Libya’s official government bombed positions west of the city of Derna near Qubbah, where Islamic State has a large presence, a military source said. Islamic State has exploited a security vacuum in Libya, four years after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, as rival governments compete for power. The militants have claimed several high-profile attacks on foreigners in Libya this year, including an assault on the Corinthia Hotel in Tripoli and the killing of dozens of Egyptian and Ethiopian Christians. A car packed with explosives hit a checkpoint in the east of Qubbah, a small town, a security official said. Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for the attack in a message on Twitter, saying a fighter from Derna had killed and wounded several people.

Four towns in Tunisia’s main phosphate-producing region began a general strike on Wednesday to protest against unemployment, as figures showed industrial activity fell sharply in early 2015. Hundreds of people took to the streets of Metlaoui, Om Lrayes, Mdhila and Redayef in the North African country’s southern “mining basin”, while public institutions and most shops there were closed, residents and officials said. The southern protests are a major challenge to government efforts to revive the economy after Tunisia completed its transition to democracy following the 2011 uprising that ousted autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali. Tunisia’s state-run Gafsa Phosphate had already suspended production after sit-in protests by unemployed youths demanding work halted deliveries at the start of the month. Phosphate exports are one of Tunisia’s main hard currency earners. “The strike in Redayef and other towns is to draw attention to the bad conditions in the region, the unemployment, despite the phosphate riches there,” said union leader Ali Jdidi. “People want jobs more than anything.” Prime Minister Habib Essid, who leads a coalition government between secular and Islamist parties, announced a package of development projects for the region on Friday, including roads and a hospital. Headline: Algerian troops kill more militants in major assault, 25 dead in total

Algerian security forces killed three militants east of the capital on the second day of a major offensive, the defence ministry said Wednesday, bringing to 25 the total number of insurgents shot dead. The ministry said late Tuesday the army had killed 22 fighters in Bouira province in a region that was an Islamist militant stronghold during a 1990s civil war that left 200,000 people dead. Fighters allied with both Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and ISIS operate in Algeria, mostly in mountainous northern areas, but militant attacks have been rare since the war with Islamist insurgents mostly came to an end in 2000. The military has given no details or mentioned the affiliation of the fighters involved. But security sources Tuesday said the strike was against members of the Caliphate Soldiers, an Al-Qaeda splinter faction that had declared allegiance with ISIS militants who control territory in Iraq and Syria.

Headline: Soldier Fatally Shot in Latest Burundi Protests

One soldier was shot dead in Burundi’s capital Wednesday as police clashed with protesters demanding that President Pierre Nkurunziza not run for a third term. A Burundian army captain told The Associated Press the soldier was with troops who were trying to stop the police from firing at stone-throwing demonstrators. The clash occurred as Nkurunziza signed a decree delaying parliamentary and local elections until June 5. There is no word on whether the commission will delay the presidential election scheduled for June 26. African leaders have called on the president to postpone the election because of mounting unrest. At least 20 people have died in three weeks of clashes between security forces and protesters. Authorities put down a coup attempt against Nkurunziza last week. The attempt was launched while the president was in Tanzania for a regional conference on Burundi’s political situation.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of protesters waving Macedonian and Albanian flags marched in Skopje in a powerful show of ethnic unity against a reeling and scandal-scarred government. Experts say the raid and ensuing protests could imperil the regime of Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. “If the conflict escalates in Macedonia, it could produce a domino effect, transferred to the Balkans, or the other former Yugoslav republics in which the security situation is bad,” said Ivan Babanovski, a former Macedonian intelligence officer and a professor at Skopje’s Faculty of Security. World powers — including the U.S., Europe, Russia and Turkey — are monitoring the complex situation closely, issuing warnings and pointing fingers. Russia, thwarted repeatedly by the West in its bid to pipe natural gas to Europe, has settled on the so-called “Turkish Stream,” a route that passes through Turkey and Macedonia. Moscow suspects the U.S. and Europe, opposed to its plans to supply energy to Europe, is fomenting unrest in a bid to change the Russia-friendly regime of Gruevski and scuttle the pipeline. Saudi-led airstrikes hit Sanaa on Tuesday, targeting arms depots belonging to Houthis and militias allied to deposed President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Meanwhile, Iran will allow the United Nations to inspect a Yemen-bound aid ship at the regional U.N. hub in Djibouti, Tehran’s deputy foreign minister was quoted as saying on Wednesday, offering a chance to avert a showdown with Saudi-led forces. Earlier in the day, the Iran Shahed’s captain had said the ship was due to enter the Bab al-Mandeb strait linking the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, bypassing Djibouti on the Horn of Africa and heading for the Yemeni port of Hodaida. “We have decided to dock our ship in Djibouti so the United Nations inspection protocol can take place,” Hossein Amir Abdollahian was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.

Headline: Deposit freezes at Greek banks ‘likely’ – Moody’s

There is a “high likelihood” that capital controls and deposit freezes will have to be imposed on Greek banks, according to rating agency Moody’s, as it estimates that more than €30bn has been withdrawn from the cash-strapped country’s banking sector over the last five months. Customers have rushed to withdraw their money during the latest torturous episode in Greece’s long-running debt saga and Moody’s believes that around 18 per cent of total deposits in Greek banks have been withdrawn over the last five months. Downgrading its outlook for Greek banks to “negative” from “stable”, Moody’s said this pressure on the banking sector is “unlikely to ease over the next 12-18 months” and “acute” funding pressures will persist.

Headline:  32 States Face Fiscal Crisis

Six years after the recession ended, many U.S. states are hard pressed to balance budgets because of a sluggish recovery and their own policy decisions. The fiscal fragility raises questions about how they will weather the next economic downturn. A majority of states are making cuts, tapping reserves or facing shortfalls despite an improving national economy and stock markets at record levels, according to Standard & Poors and the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government. State revenue hasn’t rebounded to a prerecession peak adjusted for inflation, and other factors are putting pressure on budgets. Alaska, Oklahoma and energy-producing states saw receipts fall with global oil prices. Kansas overestimated revenue after tax cuts, while New Jersey faces a shortfall thanks to unfunded pensions. Even some Republican governors have championed tax increases to avoid further diminishing services curtailed during the 18-month recession, the deepest downturn since the Great Depression. “The extent of the weakness is really impressive,” said Donald Boyd, who tracks state finances at the Rockefeller Institute in Albany, New York. “There’s a lot of pressure on governors and legislators.” Thirty-two states faced budget gaps in fiscal 2015 or 2016 or both, according to an April 27 report by Standard & Poors. The fiscal year ends June 30 in all but four states.

Headline: South Korea reports first case of MERS virus; patient stable

South Korean health officials on Wednesday confirmed the country’s first case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in a patient who recently returned from Bahrain and is in stable condition after being treated for a high fever and cough. The 68-year-old man was in Bahrain from April 18 through to May 3 and was engaged in farming-related business, South Korea’s health ministry said in a statement. He returned to South Korea on May 4 through Qatar, it said. The patient’s wife who nursed him also has a minor respiratory symptom and the results of tests on her would be available on Thursday, Kim Young-taek, a director at the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told Reuters by telephone. “There is no possibility of the disease spreading to ordinary people although it is possible to have additional cases among those who contacted the patient and have been isolated,” Kim said. First identified in humans in 2012, MERS is caused by a coronavirus, from the same family as the one that caused a deadly outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in China in 2003. There is no cure or vaccine.

Headline: China Advances Ballistic Missile Capability

China is making some of its missiles more powerful, as it asserts its sovereignty over disputed waterways in the South and East China. A U.S. Defense Department report says China is upgrading its missile capabilities through placing multiple miniaturized nuclear warheads on ballistic missiles. China has had the capability to do this since the 1990s, and its recent move to make some of its missiles more powerful has raised concerns of a regional arms race in Asia. “This is one of the nasty indirect effects of nuclear weapons modernization, that it has a tendency to trigger these action/reaction patterns in future modernizations,” explained Hans Kristensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists.  “So one has to be really careful. When you ask any of these countries, none of it is very dramatic, and none of it has very significant importance, but it adds up over time.” According to the Pentagon, China re-engineered DF-5 missiles, of which it has 20 throughout the country. Equipping the missiles with multiple warheads makes them harder to intercept. China now has the ability to launch more than 40 warheads on the United States, and its increase in military capabilities has raised doubts of China’s claim that its military spending is meant only for defense.

Headline:  Tornadoes Strike Texas, Oklahoma: At Least 2 Injured in North Texas; Homes, Businesses Damaged

Damaging storms swept across Texas and Oklahoma Tuesday, spawning more than two dozen reported tornadoes in the two states. Flash flooding also disrupted road travel in parts of the region. According to the Storm Prediction Center, 27 reported tornadoes were spotted from Tuesday through early Wednesday morning. These reports will need to be surveyed and confirmed; crews from the National Weather Service will review the damage and determine how many tornadoes were actually in progress during this event. The greatest concentration of tornadoes was in north Texas and southern Oklahoma, in a region generally northwest of Fort Worth and southwest of Oklahoma City. One of those tornadoes struck Mineral Wells, Texas, Tuesday evening before sunset with reports of a roof collapse of a vacated bank building downtown. Photos from the scene showed damage to some awnings downtown, and large tree limbs were snapped in parts of the city. After a storm survey, the NWS gave the tornado a preliminary rating of EF1.

Two policemen were lightly hurt by rocks and bottles hurled by dozens of Arabs Sunday, during a riot at Jerusalem’s Shechem Gate, aka the Damascus Gate. Police dispersed the riot and arrested two Arabs on suspicion that they threw the rocks that struck the policemen. Meanwhile, Haaretz reported that there were some clashes between Jews on the Rikudegalim Flag Dance Parade, and local Arabs. Police “stopped a brawl between Jews and Palestinians and arrested one Palestinian,” the left wing paper said. The Flag Dance Parade, which is held annually on Jerusalem Day, will pas through the Shechem Gate on its way to the Western Wall (The Kotel), where a mass thanksgiving service will be held to celebrate 48 years since the reunification of Jerusalem. The organizers of the parade called on the tens of thousands of people expected to take part in it not to provoke the Arabs of the Old City. High Court judges approved the parade’s path, which passes through the Old City, but stipulated that whoever calls out “racist” slogans during the march will be arrested and charged.

Iran is ‘proud’ of the achievements of Hezbollah and the Syrian army in a series of recent battles in Qalamoun, an adviser close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated Monday. “We feel very proud as we have been watching in the last few days the new victories that the Lebanese resistance and Syrian army are achieving in Qalamoun,” Ali Akbar Velayati said, according to the Lebanese Daily Star. “This contributes to strengthening the axis of resistance not only in Lebanon and Syria, but in the whole region and worldwide.” Velayati arrived in Lebanon on Sunday and was welcomed by Hezbollah MPs. Hezbollah and Syrian forces killed 20 Al-Nusra terrorists last week, after seizing significant territory in and around Qalamoun. The Qalamoun region, which lies north of Damascus and runs along the Lebanese border. Earlier this month, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed to oust rebels from the Qalamoun region, saying the situation “needs radical treatment” but without saying when the assault would start.

Headline: Army pounds militant positions on Arsal’s outskirts

The Lebanese Army pounded militant positions on the outskirts of the northeastern town of Arsal Sunday, killing and wounding a number of them, security sources said. A security source said the Army shelled the militants’ positions in Al-Masyada and Dahr al-Jabar on Arsal’s outskirts with artillery and rockets, killing and wounding of a number of militants. The casualties were taken to field hospitals in the area of Al-Malahi on Arsal’s outskirts.  Later Sunday, local TV stations reported that the Army opened fire on militants in Wadi Hmaid, on the northern entrance to Arsal, foiling their attempts to infiltrate the town and inflicting a number of casualties. The Army’s pre-emptive strikes come amid growing fears that Islamist militants withdrawing from Syria’s Qalamoun region following major military successes by Hezbollah and the Syrian army would regroup on the outskirts of Arsal.

Headline: Saudis to Buy Nukes from Pakistan – US Officials

Saudi Arabia is trying to purchase nuclear weapons from Pakistan, according to senior US officials. Saudi Arabia has expressed concerns over the way nuclear negotiations with Iran are being run. It has said that it fears the final agreement would allow Iran the capability of developing nuclear weapons, either by ignoring its obligations or by waiting a few years until the terms are over. Should that happen, Riyadh would want its own nuclear weapons. The Sunday Times revealed that a senior US official has said that he believes that Saudi Arabia is now beginning to build up a nuclear arsenal, first by purchasing pre-made weapons: “There has been a longstanding agreement in place with the Pakistanis and the House of Saud has now made the strategic decision to move forward.” However, the official also stated that the US does not believe that “any actual weaponry has been transferred yet.” Analysts fear that, should both Iran and Saudi Arabia develop nuclear programs, other regional countries such as Turkey and Egypt would do so as well.

A court sentenced Morsi and over 100 others to death Saturday over a mass prison break during the 2011 uprising that ousted longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Just after Morsi’s sentencing, suspected Islamic militants gunned down three judges Saturday in the Sinai Peninsula, officials said. On Sunday, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in its daily English language audio bulletin, claiming it killed six judges. There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy in numbers in the bulletin, which was posted by the SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S. firm that monitors jihadis. Meanwhile, officials said a bomb exploded late Saturday outside the main courthouse in the southern city of Assiut, seriously wounding a police officer. Two Iranian warships have begun escorting the Yemen-bound Iran Shahed cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, the vessel’s captain said in remarks published by Iran’s Tasnim news agency on Monday. “The 34th fleet has made contact with us and told us that they will keep an active presence alongside the aid ship,” Massoud Ghazi Mirsaid was quoted as saying by Tasnim, referring to a destroyer and a support vessel in the Gulf of Aden. The Mastouma base is one of the last major army strongholds in a province controlled by a range of insurgent groups including al Qaeda’s Syrian wing, the Nusra Front, and the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham movement, fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. Army units “inflicted great losses” on armed groups in battles to the north and around Mastouma, Syrian state television reported, citing a military source. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said most of the troops positioned in Idlib city were now in Mastouma after insurgents took over the provincial capital in March. The base is used for launching air raids in the province. There were reports of casualties in the battles, it said, without giving details. ***Of note here: ISIS has neither been defeated nor relegated entirely to the defensive in Syria despite a string of losses to Kurdish forces assisted by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes. Instead, ISIS has launched two major offensives targeting Syrian military positions in central and eastern Syria since May 6, 2015, likely taking advantage of the Assad regime’s preoccupation with recent JN and rebel advances in Idlib Province. A consolidation of these gains would leave ISIS in position to contest and potentially seize the most important remaining military installations in eastern Syria, eliminating any potential roadblocks to further ISIS expansion into the Syrian central corridor.

ISIS would at present have no difficulty in invading southern Jordan, where the army is thin on the ground, and seizing local towns and villages whose inhabitants are already sympathetic to the extremist group. The bulk of the Jordanian army is concentrated in the north on the Syrian border. Even a limited Islamist incursion in the south would also pose a threat to northern Saudi Arabia, the king pointed out. Abdullah offered the view that the US Delta Special Forces operation in eastern Syria Saturday was designed less to be an effective assault on ISIS’s core strength and more as a pallliative to minimize the Islamist peril facing Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the Gulf emirates. debkafile’s Washington sources report that US officials refused to heed Abdullah’s warning and tried to play it down, in the same way as Secretary John Kerry tried Monday, May 18, to de-emphasize to the ISIS conquest of Ramadi, the capital of Iraq’s largest province. At a news conference in Seoul, Kerry dismissed the Islamists’ feat as a “target of opportunity” and expressed confidence that, in the coming days, the loss “can be reversed.” The Secretary of State’s words were unlikely to scare the Islamists, who had caused more than 500 deaths in the battle for the town and witnessed panicky Iraqi soldiers fleeing Ramadi in Humvees and tanks. Baghdad, only 110 km southeast of Ramadi, has more reason to be frightened, in the absence of any sizeable Iraqi military strength in the area for standing in the enemy’s path to the capital. The Baghdad government tried announcing that substantial military reinforcements had been ordered to set out and halt the Islamists’ advance. This was just whistling in the dark. In the last two days, the remnants of the Iraqi army have gone to pieces – just like in the early days of the ISIS offensive, when the troops fled Mosul and Falujah. They are running away from any possible engagement with the Islamist enemy.

An armed separatist group in southwestern Iran attacked a government office over the weekend in the latest security incident to rock the ethnically Arab-populated Ahvaz region. The Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz (ASMLA) issued a statement Sunday claiming responsibility for the armed operation in Susangerd, saying it had killed two security officers. The group said its Moheiddin Al Nasser Martyr Brigades attacked a governorate administrative office at 11:30 p.m. Saturday night with “hand-made grenades” and opened fire on the security forces guarding the building with light arms. “As a result of the heroic operation two members of the Persian security forces were killed while three others were injured and one car belonging to the security forces was burned,” the statement said. Al-Arabiya television, in turn, cited an anonymous activist in the region as saying that two guards were injured in the strike, without any mention of deaths. Iranian press outlets covered the attack, with pro-government Rahyab News reporting that “unidentified people” had set the building alight before opening fire on it after which they fled the scene. The article made no mention of ASMLA or Arab separatists active in the region which was hit by a number of protests in March.

Headline:  Taliban suicide attack kills three near Kabul airport

A suicide bomb attack near the entrance of the international airport in the Afghan capital Kabul has killed three people, including a British citizen. The attack took place close to the area used by military vehicles and targeted a European police training mission vehicle. Two Afghan teenage girls, described as bystanders, died in the blast, while at least 18 people were injured. The Taliban said it carried out the attack in a statement emailed to media. The British victim has not been named but UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he was a security contractor. Mr Hammond said he “strongly condemned (the Taliban’s) cowardly actions”. A spokeswoman for the EU’s police mission (Eupol), Sari Haukka-Konu, said one non-mission member who had been travelling in the Eupol vehicle had been killed. The attack is the second major incident in Kabul within a week. A Taliban gun attack on a hotel in the city on Thursday killed 14 people, most of them foreigners.

Seven people were hurt in explosions at two party offices in southern Turkey, raising tensions in the run-up to next month’s general election. The blasts targeted the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) in Adana and Mersin. The government condemned the attacks, but party officials accused ministers of inciting hatred against the HDP. The pro-Kurdish party is trying to secure the 10% of votes needed to enter parliament in the 7 June election. The ruling AK party is expected to win the vote. While Gruevski denies the allegations, the scandal has plunged the Balkan country into its worst political crisis since the threat of civil war in 2001. Gruevski claims most of the wiretapped recordings were made by an unnamed foreign intelligence service in an effort to bring his government down. Social Democrat leader Zoran Zaev, who called for Sunday’s demonstrations, has accused the government of inciting ethnic conflict. In early May the Gruevski government indicted Zaev on charges of wiretapping and anti-government activities, according to the New York Times. Zaev has periodically been releasing leaked transcripts of what he claims are thousands of recordings made by the government, detailing instances of alleged corruption. He was indicted shortly before announcing plans for Sunday’s massive protest in Skopje.

The newspaper also said Tsipras contacted US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. But Kathimerini said Greece’s creditors saw the warning as a “possible bluff”. Greece won some support in the latest round of debt talks as it battles to keep itself solvent, but eurozone finance ministers have demanded more key reforms before they agree to release the funds. Scrambling to pay its debt, the Greek government ended up drawing 660 million euros ($750 million) from a special account held at the IMF, and scraping togeth er the rest of the sum just in time. Tsipras also wanted 1.9 billion euros ($2.2 billion) in profits made by the ECB from Greek bonds purchased in 2010, and 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion) Athens claims it unduly paid to the European Financial Stability Facility. About 238 million turkeys were raised in the U.S. last year.
