NOTE FROM FRANK 2 I have grouped all the news together as you will see the over-lap among those listed. Before I even begin, I want you to take a look at this photo and compare the areas with the Psalm 83 War players.  The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) – also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant- is an active jihadist militant group in Iraq and Syria. As they just proclaimed themselves as Caliphate, it claims religious authority over all Muslims and aspires to bring much of the Muslim-inhabited regions of the world under its direct political control, beginning with nearby territory in the Levant region, which includes Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Kuwait, Cyprus, and an area in southern Turkey.

Headline: Netanyahu orders Israeli military to prepare for ‘significant expansion’ of Gaza ground offensive

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military Friday to prepare for a “significant expansion” of its ground operation against Gaza militants. Netanyahu said the military’s primary goal would be to destroy underground tunnels used by Hamas to attack the Jewish State. The announcement came hours after Israeli ground troops and tanks struck more than 100 terror targets in Israel’s first major ground offensive in Gaza in just over five years. The offensive follows an Egyptian effort earlier this week to halt hostilities. Israel accepted the terms, but Hamas refused, demanding that Israel and Egypt first give guarantees to ease the blockade on Gaza. “Since there is no way to deal with the tunnels only from the air, our soldiers are doing it now from the ground,” Netanyahu said at the opening of an emergency cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv, the Jerusalem Post reported. “We decided to launch the action after we tried all the other ways, and with an understanding that without this operation the price we will have to pay later would be much higher.”

Headline: 20 missiles found in UN-run school in Gaza

Some 20 rockets were found Wednesday in a school in Gaza operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, the organization confirmed Thursday. The weapons were found in “the course of the regular inspection of its premises,” UNRWA said in a statement, adding that the school was vacant. “UNRWA strongly condemns the group or groups responsible for placing the weapons in one of its installations. This is a flagrant violation of the inviolability of its premises under international law,” the statement read. The discovery would seem to confirm Israel’s oft-repeated claim that Hamas and other Gazan terror groups use civilian infrastructure to hide weapons.

Headline: Iron Dome shoots down nine Palestinian rockets over greater Tel Aviv

As Israel’s ground incursion into the Gaza Strip enters its second day, Palestinian rocket fire on major cities continues unabated. The Iron Dome anti-rocket battery intercepted at least nine Palestinian rockets over the metropolitan Tel Aviv area Friday evening. The first salvo of four rockets were shot down just before sundown while five more projectiles were intercepted after the start of the Jewish Sabbath. The system has also shot down over two dozen Palestinian rockets that were launched on Friday at Israeli towns in the south, including Ashdod, Ashkelon, Beersheba, the Eshkol regional council, and the Gaza frontier communities. Since the early morning hours on Friday, Palestinians in Gaza have launched 100 rockets at Israel.

Headline:   Israel evacuating diplomats’ families from Turkey, following attacks

Israeli diplomatic families in Turkey are being evacuated and Israel’s diplomatic representation in that country reduced to a minimum following violent  demonstrations on Thursday night outside the embassy in Ankara and the consulate in Istanbul. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has also ordered that an official protest be conveyed to the Turkish government concerning the “gross violation of diplomatic rules and of the Vienna convention, which obliges a country to provide protection to foreign diplomats in its territory,” according to a statement issued by the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Lieberman said that the Turkish authorities and their security services had manifestly violated their international responsibilities during the demonstrations outside the embassy and consulate. “We place the responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of the Israeli representatives serving there on the Turkish government,” Lieberman said.

Headline:   Abbas, in Turkey, Urges Approval of Gaza CeasefireHeadline:Abbas: Israel ‘must stop’ Gaza ground assault

Headline: Abbas urges France to help pressure Hamas

Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud Abbas on Friday urged support for an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire proposal in Gaza, as he held talks with Turkey’s leaders on a brief stopover after a visit to Cairo. “Israel accepted the ceasefire proposal. We (the Palestinians) must also accept it so that we can put the Israeli side at unease,” Abbas told a news conference with Turkish President Abdullah Gul in Istanbul in comments translated from Arabic into Turkish. Egypt-mediated talks to end the escalating Gaza Strip conflict have faltered amid Israeli plans to widen its ground operation Gaza, a Palestinian territory ruled by the Islamist Hamas movement. Abbas voiced support for the ceasefire proposal which he said was floated by “our Egyptian brothers at our request”. Turkey, a staunch critic of the Israeli assaults in Gaza, is pressing for involvement of Hamas in any negotiations for a ceasefire.

Headline: Hamas: Gaza will be a graveyard for IDF

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri warned Israel Friday that Gaza will become a graveyard for IDF soldiers, a day after Israel launched a ground offensive into the Strip as part of Operation Protective Edge. “We are warning Israel against a ground war,” he told the Lebanese news outlet Al-Mayadeen TV. “This sort of operation will enable us to liberate our prisoners [through the capture of IDF soldiers and the ensuing exchange]. Gaza will be the graveyard of the occupation soldiers, and these are not slogans. Time will reveal [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s cowardice. He will pay the price.” Asked why Hamas was unwilling to stop the rocket fire that drove the Israeli cabinet to vote for the ground operation, Abu Zuhri replied, “That sort of decision would continue the occupation for another 20 years, as Oslo did. In exchange for this blood [caused by the continued fighting], we will bring normal life to the Gaza Strip.”

Headline: Iranian Leader Encourages Hamas in ‘Struggle Against Occupation’

Hamas continues to receive military and political support from Iran, it was revealed Friday. Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal spoke to Iranian Parliament chairman Ali Larijani Thursday night, shortly after the Israeli government announced it would launch a ground offensive into Gaza. Mashaal reportedly said that Hamas could deal with every possible scenario, boasting that their main goal is to “break the Occupation and remove the siege on Gaza.” Mashaal also called on Iran and other Arab nations to rally around the “Palestinian cause,” and praised Iran’s support for the terror organization over the past several years. Larijani responded that the ground offensive is the result of “miscalculation” on Israel’s part and that Iran was “proud” of Hamas’s “struggle against the Occupation” and was sure it would bring results.

Thousands of protesters in numerous cities worldwide took to the streets Thursday and Friday, from Cairo to Istanbul to Washington, to demand an immediate halt of Israel’s ground incursion in the Gaza Strip and call on the international community to intervene on behalf of Gazans. In Turkey, Egypt and Jordan, rallies were held in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, some of them turning violent as demonstrators clashed with police forces and vandalized public property. There were also protests in cities including London, Madrid, New York, and Cape Town. In Istanbul, police warded off hundreds of rioters who attempted on Thursday to storm the Israeli embassy building. Demonstrators in Ankara and Istanbul also hurled stones at several compounds where Israeli officials reside. Calls for the destruction of the Jewish state were heard in both Turkish cities. Police responded by firing tear gas canisters and water cannons at the crowds.

Headline: Erdogan slams Egypt’s Sisi as ‘tyrant’ over Cairo policy toward Hamas

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday lashed out at Egypt’s newly installed president, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, for Cairo’s antagonistic attitude toward Hamas. When asked about Egyptian mediation efforts aimed at bringing about a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, Erdogan scoffed. “Is Sisi a party (to a ceasefire)? Sisi is a tyrant himself,” Erdogan was quoted by AFP as telling reporters. “He is not different from the others.” Turkey has been critical of Egypt’s decision to seal the Gaza-Sinai border crossings. Ankara also opposed the Egyptian military’s toppling of Islamist leader Mohammed Morsi, leading to Sisi’s ascension. In November, Egypt expelled Turkey’s ambassador from Cairo due to Ankara’s expressed support for Morsi. “Egypt is not a party, they are trying to legitimize (the Sisi administration) in Egypt. It is not a legitimate administration. It is illegitimate,” Erdogan said. The Turkish leader, who accused Israel of “genocide” against the Palestinians, slammed Jerusalem’s policy – supported by Egypt and the West – of shunning Hamas. July 18, 2014

Hezbollah fighters, under cover of Syrian aerial and ground bombardment, fought doggedly all night to cut off rebels’ supply lines along the border with Lebanon. Security sources told The Daily Star that heavy fighting raged through the night between Hezbollah fighters and Nusra Front gunmen along the northeastern border. They said the clashes with automatic machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and Grad rockets dwindled in the early hours of the morning Friday. The Syrian army unleashed rocket salvos on rebel pockets as warplanes provided aerial cover for Hezbollah fighters working to cut off logistics routes from the northeastern Lebanese town of Arsal, the sources added.

Headline:  Syrian army, ISIS clash near army airport

Headline:  Reports: 100 Killed in Seizure of Syria Gas Field

Syria’s army clashed with Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) fighters outside a government-controlled military airport Friday, an activist group said, as the Al-Qaeda splinter group seeks to strengthen its grip on the east of the country. Deir al-Zor airport is one of the last key strategic locations in the province out of the control of ISIS, which has also seized swath of territory across the border in northern and western Iraq. The Syrian army responded by bombing areas around the airport, which supplies its forces in the east of the country, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. There were no details of casualties. The fighting was just a few hundred meters from the airport, the Observatory’s director Rami Abdul-Rahman said, adding that it would be tough for ISIS to overcome government forces there. ISIS expelled rival rebels from Deir al-Zor city Monday, tightening its hold on the oil-producing province bordering Iraq.

Headline: World calls for Ukraine cease-fire after crash

World leaders called for an immediate cease-fire in eastern Ukraine on Friday and demanded speedy access for international investigators to the crash site of the Malaysia Airlines jetliner shot down over the country’s battlefields. The strong words came amid the contrasting images of emergency workers and off-duty coal miners fanning out across picturesque sunflower fields searching for charred pieces of wreckage from the Boeing 777. The attack Thursday afternoon killed 298 people from nearly a dozen nations — including vacationers, students and a large contingent of scientists heading to an AIDS conference in Australia. President Barack Obama called for an immediate cease-fire between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russia separatists. He also called for a credible investigation. “The eyes of the world are on eastern Ukraine, and we are going to make sure that the truth is out,” Obama said at the White House.

Headline: Iran, six powers haggle over extending nuclear talks: diplomats

Iran and six world powers haggled on Friday over the terms of extending negotiations on a nuclear deal for four more months after failing to bridge wide gaps on limits for Tehran’s atomic program, diplomats said. It has been clear for several days that Iran, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China would miss a July 20 deadline to reach a long-term accord on curbing Tehran’s nuclear activities in exchange for a gradual end to international sanctions that have crippled the Iranian economy. Before returning to the larger issues that are dividing them – including the permissible scope of Iran’s nuclear fuel production capacity and how to address the country’s suspected past atomic bomb research – they must iron out the conditions of continuing their talks, which began in February in Vienna.

Headline: Militants storm Iraqi air base

Fighters from the jihadist-led coalition that controls large parts of Iraq launched a brazen raid on an Iraqi air base near Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit, military sources said Friday.  The army and an Islamic State statement differed on the outcome of the battle and the death toll, but a military intelligence officer admitted the air field known as Speicher was stormed late Thursday.  “Last night, gunmen infiltrated the base. There were snipers and suicide bombers among them, they managed to reach the runway,” the officer, who witnessed the attack, told AFP on condition of anonymity.  IS fighters and their allies control the nearby city of Tikrit but Iraqi federal forces had managed to hold on to Speicher – named by US troops after a navy pilot whose plane was shot down by Saddam’s forces in 1991 – despite repeated attacks in recent weeks.  “When the clashes erupted, the pilots flew the base’s aircraft out” to save them from destruction, the officer said. “But one Russian-made helicopter which had not taken off was destroyed.”

Fighting between powerful militias battling for control of Tripoli’s airport broke out again Friday, just hours after they had agreed a truce, witnesses said. The clashes came as the government sought United Nations help to prevent the country from becoming a “failed state.” Gunfire and blasts were heard in Tripoli’s Abu Slim neighborhood, some 15 kilometers south of the airport, an AFP correspondent said. Residents said the battles pitched rival militias against each other. The airport has been closed since Sunday, when Islamist gunmen from the city of Misrata launched an attack on the facility, which has for the past three years been held by liberal, anti-Islamist fighters from Zintan, southwest of the capital.

Drug-resistant superbug infections have reached near-epidemic levels across U.S. hospitals, with an alarming 500% increase now documented in a study just published in the August issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology (the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America). (1) Lead author of the study, Dr. Joshua Thaden, warned “This dangerous bacteria is finding its way into healthcare facilities nationwide… A CRE epidemic is fast approaching… Even this marked increase likely underestimates the true scope of the problem given variations in hospital surveillance practices.” The study also found that an astonishing 94 percent of CRE infections were caused by healthcare activities or hospital procedures.

Chikungunya has been reported in a Florida man and woman who had not recently traveled, health officials said Thursday — the first indication that the painful virus has taken up residence in the United States. Health experts had said it was only a matter of time before the virus, carried by mosquitoes, made its way to the U.S. It’s been spreading rapidly in the Caribbean and Central America. It’s infected 350,000 and killed 21. There have been other U.S. cases but all have been among people who had recently traveled to affected regions. “Seven months after the mosquito-borne virus chikungunya was recognized in the Western Hemisphere, the first locally acquired case of the disease has surfaced in the continental United States,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement.

Headline: Court rules for gay marriage in Oklahoma case

A federal appeals court on Friday ruled Oklahoma must allow gay couples to wed, marking the second time it has found the U.S. Constitution protects same-sex marriage. The decision from a three-judge panel in Denver upholds rulings that struck down Oklahoma’s gay marriage ban. The 2-1 ruling comes after the same panel ruled June 25 that Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage violates the Constitution. It was the first time an appellate court determined last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act means states cannot deny gays the ability to wed. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel put its Oklahoma and Utah rulings on hold pending an appeal. Utah’s attorney general has said he plans to appeal to the Supreme Court. Gay marriage in the two states will remain on hold. Still, the decisions give increased momentum to a legal cause that has compiled an impressive string of lower court victories. More than 20 courts have issued rulings siding with gay marriage advocates since the Supreme Court’s DOMA ruling in June 2013. The rulings have come in 17 states, with Florida being the latest.

The Somali government has declared a drought in six regions as monitors warn that food prices are soaring in the affected areas. The government on Thursday established a $500,000 drought relief fund and renewed an appeal for international help to combat growing shortages of food and water. Somali Agriculture Minister Abdi Ahmed Mohamed told VOA’s Somali Service that officials hope to prevent a repeat of the famine three years ago that killed more than 200,000 Somalis and forced hundreds of thousands more to flee to neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia. “The purpose of this government measure is avoid the situation we witnessed back in 2011, and enable our various institutions to be ready for any swift action to support and assist those affected by the drought,” Mohamed said.

Headline: Super Typhoon Rammasun hits southern China

The strongest typhoon to hit southern China in more than 40 years made its second landfall Friday, authorities said, after leaving a trail of destruction and at least 64 dead in the neighbouring Philippines. Super Typhoon Rammasun hit the city of Zhanjiang in south China’s Guangdong province Friday night, local meteorological authorities said, according to the official Xinhua news agency. It first made landfall Friday afternoon on Hainan island, packing winds of up to 216 kilometres (134 miles) an hour, China’s National Meteorological Center (NMC) said. The typhoon was expected to bring torrential rains and was the strongest storm to strike the country’s southern regions since 1973, the NMC said. It claimed its first victim in China soon after coming ashore in Wenchang, Xinhua reported, when a man was killed by debris as his house collapsed. State-run China Central Television in news bulletins showed images of wind-whipped trees in Hainan and high waves churned up by the typhoon. “Strong Typhoon Rammasun is too frightening,” wrote one poster on Chinese social media, adding it “came ashore with fierce winds”.
