Headline: Trump pledges to move US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

Headline: Chinese President Calls for East Jerusalem as Capital of Palestinian State

Donald Trump said he would move the US Embassy to Jerusalem. “They want it in Jerusalem,” the front-runner among Republican presidential candidates said in an interview posted Tuesday by The Brody File, a Christian Broadcasting Network show. “Well I am for that 100 percent. We are for that 100 percent.” David Brody, the CBN journalist, had asked Trump whether he agreed with GOP rivals, including Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who have pledged to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem once elected. Trump’s agreement seemed to be an about-face from remarks in December at the Republican Jewish Coalition, when the real estate magnate refused to commit to recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital. Speaking over boos at that event, Trump said it was foolish to harden positions ahead of talks. “You can’t go in with the attitude ‘we’re gonna shove it down your,’ you’ve got to go in and get it and do and do it nicely, so that everybody’s happy,” he said there. Congress passed a law in 1995 mandating the move of the embassy to Jerusalem, but allowed the president a waiver. Each president since then has routinely exercised the waiver, citing the national security interests of the United States.

Headline: Israel says will seize West Bank land

Israel confirmed on Thursday it was planning to appropriate a large tract of fertile land in the occupied West Bank, close to Jordan, a move likely to exacerbate tensions with Western allies and already drawing international condemnation. In an email sent to Reuters, COGAT, a unit of Israel’s Defence Ministry, said the political decision to seize the territory had been taken and “the lands are in the final stages of being declared state lands”. The appropriation, covers 154 hectares (380 acres) in the Jordan Valley close to Jericho, an area where Israel already has many settlement farms built on land Palestinians seek for a state. It is the largest land seizure since August 2014. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon denounced the move and Palestinian officials said they would push for a resolution at the United Nations against Israel’s settlement policies. “Settlement activities are a violation of international law and run counter to the public pronouncements of the government of Israel supporting a two-state solution to the conflict,” Ban said in a statement. The land, in an area fully under Israeli civilian and military control and already used by Jewish settlers to farm dates, is situated near the northern tip of the Dead Sea.

Headline: IDF Redeploys to West Bank Positions and Checkpoints It Shuttered Years Ago

Headline: IDF deploys artillery battery on Gaza border

Four months into the current wave of Palestinian terror, the Israel Defense Forces is changing its operational deployment in the West Bank and returning to positions it had abandoned in previous years. Over the past few weeks, the Central Command and the IDF’s construction unit have been getting various positions ready for the soldiers’ return. A permanent garrison has already returned to the Shdema outpost, near the Palestinian town of Beit Sahur in the Bethlehem region. During the second intifada, Shdema served as a lookout post, but in 2006 the IDF decided it was no longer needed and abandoned it. At that point, a dispute erupted over what would become of the compound: Beit Sahur wanted to turn it into a hospital, while the Women in Green organization sought to turn it into a new Jewish settlement. The argument became moot in 2010, when the IDF redeployed in Shdema. The position was later abandoned a second time, and about three years ago the IDF allowed settlers to renovate the abandoned base and hold events there. Now, the IDF is moving back to Shdema. Over the past few weeks, it has expanded the compound outpost and built a fence around it, and recently a company of reservists moved in — one of several companies called up at the beginning of the month to bolster the army’s forces in the West Bank.

Headline: Arab Media Report Israeli Proposed Autonomy Plan to Quiet Jerusalem Violence

Headline: Palestinian militia discussed for E. Jerusalem to help bar terror and block ISIS influence

Headline: Senior PA official: Palestinian state in West Bank just a phase

While the Palestinian Authority rails at Israel over its “settlement expanionist policies” a quiet move may be in process to grant a measure of autonomy in Jerusalem’s Arab neighborhoods. The Kuwait-based Al Jaridi newspaper quoted “private sources” on Wednesday who said Israel has proposed security forces of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) police — and prevent attacks on Israelis — from the Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem’s post-1967 areas. Among the neighborhoods to be included in the PLO security force catchment area would be the northern “hot spot” neighborhoods of Shuafat and Anata. Under the proposed agreement, the PLO police force would secure the neighborhoods without the need for prior coordination with Israel, thus granting the area a form of autonomy within the capital. According to the report, “observers” see the proposal “as an attempt by Israel to “shirk their responsibilities towards the Arab population of Jerusalem and the camps surrounding the city.” The Arabs who live in those communities there hold blue Israeli identity cards, denoting they are Israeli residents; yet when traveling abroad, temporary Jordanian passports. They could, if they chose, turn to Israel’s Interior Ministry and apply to become actual citizens of Israel since they are technically residents of Jerusalem. But for many reasons, they don’t. Meanwhile, Fatah Central Committee member Tawfik Tirawi would accept a state in ‘1967 borders’ – but with end goal of destroying Israel completely.

Headline:   Muslim body calls for de-escalation Riyadh-Tehran dispute

The head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called for the de-escalation of recent tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia, saying such a situation diverts attentions from the “real challenges” facing Muslims. Iyad Madani made the remarks on Thursday during an address to an extraordinary meeting of the world’s largest Muslim body. “It is clear that the continued deterioration of relations between some of our member states contributes to deepening rifts” among Islamic nations, in apparent reference to the row between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The head of the 57-member group that is based in the Saudi city of Jeddah further said that such tensions “distract us from addressing the real challenges,” including “terrorism,” which threaten members of the organization. Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran on January 3 following demonstrations held in front of the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in the northeastern city of Mashhad by angry protesters censuring the Al Saud family for the execution of prominent cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr in Riyadh.

Headline: Oman crossings to Yemen closed over attack fears

An air strike by a Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen killed at least nine people on Thursday at an oil facility on the Red Sea operated by its Houthi opponents, oil workers and medics said. A news agency run by the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, www.sabanew.net, put the death toll at 16, quoting an unnamed source. It said the cause of the fire was not known. Medical sources in the nearby port city of Hodeidah said the attack on the facility at Ras Isa, which local oil workers said was used to load tanker trucks with refined products for domestic distribution, also wounded at least 30. “The bodies were either burned or mutilated,” one source told Reuters by text message. Pictures showed fire trucks trying to put out flames rising from fuel trucks as black smoke covered the area. In eastern Yemen, four government soldiers were killed and four wounded in a bomb attack on their vehicle near al Wadia, a post on the Saudi border, a government official said. The official said al Qaeda militants were suspected of carrying out the attack.

Headline: Egyptian police killed in Sinai checkpoint attack

Five policemen have been killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the north of Egypt’s restive Sinai peninsula, the interior ministry says. Three conscripts were also also wounded when gunmen opened fire at the checkpoint in the town of El-Arish. Security forces were searching for the attackers, who managed to flee. Jihadist militants, largely based in Sinai, have killed hundreds of security personnel since the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi in 2013. The government has responded with air strikes and ground operations. The last major attack in El-Arish took place in December, when suicide bombers blew themselves up at a hotel, killing two judges monitoring the parliamentary elections.

Syria Headline:   Daraa rebels ordered to stop fighting Syria regime: report

The Amman-based Military Operations Center (MOC) that helps coordinate rebel operations in southern Syria has ordered Free Syrian Army-affiliated factions to stop attacking regime forces and instead focus their efforts against the Nusra Front, according to a Lebanese daily. The MOC’s alleged decision comes within the context of “warming ties” between Amman and Moscow following Russia’s aerial intervention on behalf of the Bashar al-Assad regime. On October 23, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced in Vienna that his country and Amman had agreed to coordinate military actions in Syria with a “special working mechanism” based in the Jordanian capital. A month later, Jordanian King Abdullah II met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russian capital during a visit in which he said that the “only way of finding a political solution in Syria is with the strong role that both [Putin] and Russia play.” Jordan was also tasked in November by Washington and Moscow with formulating a list of terrorist groups in the war-torn country that would be the target of mutually agreed upon airstrikes by the rival powers currently intervening in the conflict. An unnamed source in the FSA’s Southern Front told Alaraby Aljadeed that coordination between the two countries would not bode well for rebels in the Daraa province. (See ETRM News for Jan. 15th) http://endtimesresearchministry.com/january-15-2016-come-now-you-rich-weep/

The sources added that the FSA-linked groups were told by Jordanian, US and British intelligence officials to “stop operations against the Syrian army and avoid periphery battles,” in reference to intermittent rounds of fighting between the rebels and ISIS-affiliated groups in southern Syria. Instead, the Southern Front factions present in the Amman meeting—as well as the allied Army of Free Tribes group backed by Jordan—were instructed to concentrate on fighting both the Al-Nusra Front and Islamic Muthana Movement, which is close to the Al-Qaeda affiliate.

Kurdish Headline: Time to help them’: Israeli justice minister calls for independent Kurdish state

Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked has spoken out in favor of an independent Kurdish state. She also urged increased cooperation between Israel and the Kurdish people. Shaked sees this as an opportunity to weaken Israel’s rivals in the region. “We must openly call for the establishment of a Kurdish state that separates Iran from Turkey, one which will be friendly towards Israel,” Shaked told the annual INSS security conference in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, as cited by the Times of Israel. More precisely, Shaked proposed the new state be founded between Turkey, Israel and Iraq. The minister stressed that Israel should “promote steps that would correct the injustice that [made Kurds] the biggest nation without a state,” BasNews reported. She also emphasized that “the Kurds are an ancient people with thousands of years of history, and a democratic nation” – one that has “never attacked any other nation.” For Shaked, this isn’t just about driving a regional wedge between all the countries that could not accommodate a separate Kurdish state. “The Kurdish people are a partner for the Israeli people,” she continued, adding that Islamist extremism in the region is something both the Kurds and Israelis can work together on combatting. “We Kurds and Jews have a long history. We have common interests in trying to stop Daesh [Islamic State/IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] and the Kurds are fighting ISIS with all their might.”

Headline: Turkey accuses Moscow and Damascus of jeopardising Geneva talks

Headline: Why the world questions Turkey’s stance on Islamic State

The Turkish Prime Minister has blamed Damascus and Moscow for delaying peace talks on Syria planned for Geneva next week. Ahmet Davutoglu has backed calls to exclude militant organisations like the Kurdish YPG militia on the opposition side. The Syrian Opposition Council is refusing to attend if a third party takes part. Davotoglu told an audience in Davos that Damascus and Moscow are to blame. “We are supporting moderate opposition forces in Syria who are fighting against Daesh positions, especially in the last two weeks, close to our border. Meanwhile, Syrian regime and Russian airplanes are attacking the moderate opposition. They are putting some other elements in the opposition side, like the YPG, which has been collaborating with the regime and attacking the moderate opposition.” “Turkey will be supporting any initiative for a political solution in Syria. The only thing we want is that the moderate opposition should be represented by their own will and initiative. No terrorist groups should be represented around the table,” Davotoglu said. “If others want to be at the table, they can be on the side of the regime.”

Headline: Iran to Begin Construction on Two New Nuke Plants

The head of Iran’s atomic energy organization announced on Tuesday that the Islamic Republic, with assistance from Russia and China, will move forward on the construction of two new nuclear power plants, according to comments published in Iranian state-controlled media. Ali Akbar Salehi, who heads the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, told Iranian reporters that construction on these new nuclear plants will begin in the “near future,” according to Fars News Agency. “Construction of two 1000-MW power plants will start soon,” Salehi was quoted as saying. “We will build two other small power plants too in cooperation with China,” he added. A handful of European and Asian countries have expressed renewed interest in cooperating with Iran to help develop its nuclear industry now that the landmark nuclear agreement has been implemented, according to Salehi. “Certain European and Asian states, including China, Japan and South Korea, are ready for cooperation, and conditions have changed compared with the past,” Salehi said. Iran announced in December that it would begin construction on another new nuclear plant that is being built by Russia, which signed a contract to build two reactors in the country. Iran is permitted under the nuclear agreement, as well as by the United Nations, to continue building nuclear reactors, despite worries from some experts that the technology could be used to clandestinely continue weapons research. A State Department official confirmed to the Washington Free Beacon last year that this would not violate past agreements with Iran.

The Central Bank of Iran announced Thursday that two of the country’s state-run banks and 10 private banks have been reconnected to the SWIFT money transfer system, which links about 9,700 banks in 209 countries around the globe. The Iranian financial system had been cut off from direct international monetary transfers since the imposition of economic sanctions in 2012. The reconnection was enabled by the UN nuclear watchdog’s announcement last week that Tehran is in compliance with its nuclear agreement with Western powers.

A suicide car bomb struck a bus carrying employees of Afghanistan’s largest independent television broadcaster Wednesday evening, killing seven people and wounding 27, police officials said. The blast in western Kabul’s Darulaman Road area hit a civilian bus transporting employees of Moby Group, which includes the Tolo TV news channel, the city’s police chief, Abdul Rahman Rahimi, told reporters at the scene. The Taliban, which last year named employees of Tolo and 1TV, another major private broadcaster, as legitimate targets, claimed responsibility for the bombing. “Unfortunately, in the terrorist attack today in Darulaman Road in Kabul, we lost 7 staff members,” Tolo TV said on its Twitter account. Rahimi condemned the bombing, saying the media and freedom of the press should never come under attack. The Taliban has increased attacks on civilian targets in recent months as part of a fierce offensive that has wrested territory from the Afghan government. This week, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United States and China called on the Taliban to resume peace talks with the Kabul government, but the insurgent group has not indicated whether it will participate.

Headline:     Sudan openly mulling ties with Israel

In yet another sign of shifting ground in the region, Sudan this week openly discussed the possibility of normalizing ties with Israel. The Sudan News Agency reported that the committee for external relations of the National Dialogue Conference discussed the issue at a meeting on Monday. The report quoted one member of the committee, Ibrahim Suleiman, as saying that the majority of the committee called for the establishment of “normal and conditioned” relations with Israel. The National Dialogue Conference is a forum initiated by Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir – with the participation of a wide array of opposition elements – aimed at mapping out the future of the war-torn state. Just three years ago, Bashir – following an attack on a military factory in Khartoum that Sudan blamed on Israel – vowed that his country would never normalize relations with the “Zionist enemy.” At that time, Sudan was firmly in Iran’s camp, and was seen as a key link in smuggling arms to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza. In the interim, however, Sudan and Iran have had a falling-out.

Headline:    Islamic State attack sets storage tanks ablaze at Libyan oil terminal

Islamic State militants set fire on Thursday to oil storage tanks in a fresh assault on Ras Lanuf terminal in northern Libya and the group threatened further attacks as they exploit a prolonged power vacuum in the large north African nation. The chairman of the National Oil Corporation, Mustafa Sanalla, told reporters in Tripoli that Ras Lanuf – shut since December 2014 – would remain closed for a “long time” because of the damage inflicted on Thursday and in earlier attacks. Libya remains dogged by violence and political turmoil nearly five years after the overthrow of veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi, with two rival governments and parliaments based in Tripoli and in the east as well as various armed factions vying for power and a share of the country’s oil wealth. The Islamic State militants drove into the oil storage site early in the morning and clashed with security guards before retreating and firing from a distance to set four tanks on fire, NOC spokesman Mohamed al-Harari said. A pipeline leading from the Amal oil field to the nearby Es Sider terminal, the biggest on Libya’s Mediterranean coast, was also targeted, said Mohamed al-Manfi, an energy official allied with Libya’s eastern-based government.

Headline: Tunisia police, rioters clash in more job protests

Tunisian police fired tear gas on Tuesday to disperse hundreds of angry protesters demanding jobs in the central city of Kasserine, two days after a young unemployed man committed suicide, local residents said. Mass unrest in Tunisia five years ago was triggered by the suicide of a disaffected young man and sparked revolutions that transformed the Arab world. But while countries such as Libya and Syria have been torn apart by violence, Tunisia avoided the worst of the chaos and remains relatively stable. Despite democratisation since the toppling of autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, many Tunisians fret over high unemployment and inflation and a continued marginalisation of rural towns – factors that helped fuel the 2011 uprising. “Security forces chased the protesters in the streets of the city and fired tear gas,” Hatem Salhi, a witness, told Reuters by telephone. The Interior Ministry later announced a night time curfew in Kasserine as a preventative measure. Hundreds of unemployed protesters had gathered in front of the headquarters of the Kasserine governorate, where some threatened to commit suicide, prompting tear gas salvoes by security forces to scatter them, witnesses said.

Headline:   ISIS sets sights on overthrowing governments of Morocco and Tunisia

In the wake of growing civil unrest in Tunisia and Morocco, ISIS has launched a new media campaign directed at Muslims in the Islamic Maghreb, which focuses mainly on the ‘apostate’ governments of Tunisia and Morocco. The campaign, launched on Thursday, consists of several videos released by different ISIS provinces. The jihadists participating in the campaign call on Muslims to join ISIS strongholds in Tunisia, Libya, Mali and Algeria in order to oust the apostate democratic governments of Tunisia and Morocco and replace them with an Islamic regime based on Sharia law.
ISIS jihadists blame the Islamic Maghreb’s governments for striving to ‘westernize’ Muslims by cultivating Western lifestyle which contradicts the Islamic tradition in their state. They also vehemently attack Tunisia for its participation in the international coalition against ISIS, claiming that Tunisia takes part in the killing of Sunnis together with Russia and the US, in the guise of fighting terror.
A Tunisian jihadist speaking in the video urges Muslims to attack Tunisia, saying: “Follow in the footsteps of your brothers in Paris. Is it easier to bypass the security measures in Paris than in Tunisia? No. But we know Tunisia and we know its coward policemen. Hence, you can do twice as much as your brothers have done in France.”

Headline:   Armenia: Stepping Gingerly Around Russia-Turkey Feud

Headline:   Azerbaijan Forced to Choose Between Russia and Turkey

Policymakers in Armenia are wary of the risks of the country getting caught up in deepening Russian-Turkish rancor. But some observers see opportunity for Armenia to advance its interests amid the geopolitical falling out. Russian-Turkish relations have rapidly deteriorated since Turkish jets downed a Russian Su-24M fighter in late November. The spat has broad ramifications for Armenia: deep feelings of distrust and hostility mark Yerevan’s own relationship with Turkey, which borders Armenia to the west. Meanwhile, Armenia has traditionally seen Russia as the nation’s protector and strategic ally. Speculation about Armenia potentially becoming drawn into the Russian-Turkish feud often touches on the Russian military base at the Armenian town of Gyumri. The facility sits less than 10 kilometers from the Turkish border. While former Armenian Defense Minister Vagharshak Harutiunian (1999-2000) doubts that the existing rancor will spark armed conflict between Russia and Turkey, he predicted that “it will have a significant impact on the entire region of the South Caucasus, where Moscow’s and Ankara’s interests cross.”

Headline: Al Qaeda and ISIS: Existential Threats to the U.S. and Europe

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and the Critical Threats Project (CTP) at the American Enterprise Institute conducted an intensive multi-week exercise to frame, design, and evaluate potential courses of action that the United States could pursue to defeat the threat from the Islamic State in Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) and al Qaeda in Iraq and Syria. The planning group weighed the national security interests of the United States, its partners, its rivals, and its enemies operating in or influencing the conflicts in Iraq and Syria. It considered how current policies and interests are interacting in this complex environment. It identified the minimum endstates that would satisfy American national security requirements as well as the likely outcomes of current policies. The group also assessed the threat posed by al Qaeda and ISIS to the United States, both in the immediate and long term, and tested the probable outcomes of several potential courses of action that the United States could pursue in Iraq and Syria. This first report examines America’s global grand strategic objectives as they relate to the threat from ISIS and al Qaeda. It considers the nature of those enemy groups in depth and in their global context.

The key findings of this first report are: Salafi-jihadi military organizations, particularly ISIS and al Qaeda, are the greatest threat to the security and values of American and European citizens, Syrian al Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al Nusra poses one of the most significant long-term threats of any Salafi-jihadi group, ISIS and al Qaeda are more than terrorist groups; they are insurgencies, Current counter-ISIS and –al Qaeda policies do not ensure the safety of the American people or the homeland, & American and Western security requires the elimination of ISIS and al Qaeda regional bases and safe-havens

Headline: Competing Visions for Syria and Iraq: The Myth of an Anti-ISIS Grand Coalition

The key findings of this 2nd report are: The U.S. must accomplish four strategic objectives in Iraq and Syria to achieve vital national interests and secure its people, Any American strategy must take urgent measures to strengthen Iraqi Prime Minister Abadi and prepare contingency efforts for his fall, Ongoing international negotiations within the Vienna Framework are bypassing essential requirements for long-term success in Syria, The Salafi-jihadi militant base in Syria poses a threat to the U.S., but the U.S. must not simply attack it, & The superficial convergence of Iranian, Russian, Turkish, and Saudi strategic objectives with those of the U.S. on ISIS as a threat masks significant divergences that will undermine U.S. security requirements

Two car bombs exploded at the entrance to a beachside restaurant in the Somali capital Mogadishu in the space of an hour on Thursday, police and witnesses said, with suspected Islamist fighters holed up inside. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the police said gunmen from the militant group al Shabaab, which is aligned with al Qaeda, had stormed the restaurant and set off the first car bomb at dusk. “The second car bomb has just exploded and the fighters are still inside,” Major Farah Abdulle, a police officer at the scene, told Reuters. “We cannot know the number of casualties inside.” Al Shabaab has carried out similar attacks in the past across Mogadishu, often targeting hotels and restaurants popular with government officials and foreigners. Witnesses said the echo of the huge second explosion could be heard across the city center, and that it had been followed by sporadic gunfire.

A suicide bomber riding a motorcycle struck a crowded police checkpoint on the outskirts of the Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday, killing 11 people in an attack claimed by the Taliban. Another 21 people were wounded in the blast, which took place on a road leading to neighboring Afghanistan, police official Iqbal Khan said. Peshawar is on the edge of Pakistan’s volatile tribal regions, a stronghold of the Taliban and other Islamic militants. Khan said the dead include four police and seven civilians, including two children and a local journalist, Mahboob Shah Afridi, who was president of Tribal Union of Journalists in the neighboring Khyber region. A local Pakistani Taliban commander, Maqbool Dawar, claimed the attack, which took place as a local police chief arrived at the checkpoint. Dawar said it was in response to the killing of his comrades by security forces. Nisar Khan, who was waiting to cross the road, said the checkpoint was choked with traffic at the time of the attack. He said the huge blast left vehicles in flames and that he saw wounded people in pools of blood crying out for help.

Headline: Pro-Russia protesters storm Moldova parliament

Hundreds of protesters broke into Moldova’s parliament on Wednesday (20 January), shortly after MPs approved the nomination of a new, pro-EU prime minister. The Reuters news agency reports that members of the crowd, which had called for new elections, scuffled with police in riot gear, leading to minor injuries and arrests. The demonstration, reminiscent of the pro-Western, so-called Colour Revolutions of 10 years ago, was the latest in a series of protests which are being organised, in the main part, by pro-Russian opposition parties, such as Our Party of oligarch Renato Usatii, EU sources say. Opinion polls indicate that if elections were held, the opposition could sweep to power, putting in doubt Moldova’s EU integration. The EU foreign service, for its part, called for “calm and restraint from all sides.” “We encourage all stakeholders in the country to engage in a dialogue and to find, together, a way forward for the Republic of Moldova,” it said on Wednesday. But the protests, which have rumbled, on and off, since February last year also involve pro-transparency and anti-corruption groups.

Headline: One killed as deadly clashes erupt in Kashmir

A series of violent clashes between police and the residents of Indian-administered Kashmir have left at least a protester dead and two others wounded in the disputed Himalayan valley. On Wednesday, large crowds of angry protesters took to the streets of Naina and Batpora villages of Pulwama district, located south of the main city of Srinagar. Chanting pro-independence slogans, scores of youths hurled rocks at government forces during protests in the troubled region. The protests were called by several pro-independence groups that oppose New Delhi’s rule over the valley. Violent clashes erupted as Indian troops violently attacked pro-independence demonstrators and fired gunshots and used tear gas to disperse the angry demonstrators. Inspector-General Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gillani has confirmed that a civilian had been killed and two men injured were hospitalized following the clashes. The security clampdown comes after Kashmiri pro-independence leaders appealed for a massive march against the killing of two suspected fighters in a gunfight with security forces in the troubled region during the overnight encounter. A Kashmiri civilian succumbed to a bullet allegedly fired by troopers.

Headline: Cameron ‘not in a hurry’ for EU deal

British prime minister David Cameron said Thursday (21 January) he would not take any EU deal if there were insufficient curbs to in-work benefits for migrants and that he was not in a hurry to hold a referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU. “If there isn’t the right deal, I’m not in a hurry, I can hold my referendum at any time until the end of 2017,” he told an audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, possibly setting the stage for a delay. “It is much more important to get it right, than to rush it,” Cameron added. EU leaders are expected to have a deal on offer by their next EU summit in Brussels in mid-February. In line with that, Cameron is widely expected to try to hold a referendum early in the summer, although he has given himself by the end of 2017 to do it. In a sign that a deal is far from being done, French prime minister Manuel Valls warned also in Davos that Britain’s demands for reform could not be met at any price, even if Britain leaving the EU would be a “tragedy”.

Headline: Russian ruble falls to 80 per dollar

The value of the Russian ruble fell again Thursday, declining 5.3 percent in a day as Russia’s most valuable export, oil, fell to $30 per barrel. The ruble traded Thursday at 85.999 to the dollar, crossing the psychological threshold of 80 per dollar on Wednesday. For most of the first decade of the 21st century, the ruble held steady at between 30 and 35 to the dollar. The currency, which has lost 9 percent of its value since the start of 2016, fell as the price of oil declined to levels not seen since 2003. The country’s economy has also been hit hard by economic sanctions placed against it by the West for Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and doing business in Russia remains uncertain for many companies. Russian households are spending less to weather the decline in their purchasing power, which includes double-digit inflation. Sales of cars in Russia fell by one-third in 2015, consumers are cutting back on food purchases, and those planning vacations have reduced foreign travel and instead have been selecting domestic destinations.

jobless

Headline: Jobless claims jump to 7-month high

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits in mid-January reached seven-month highs, perhaps a sign that the rate of layoffs in the U.S. has risen slightly from record lows. Initial jobless claims climbed a seasonally adjusted 10,000 to 293,000 in the seven days stretching from Jan. 10 to Jan 16, the government said Thursday. That’s the highest level since last July. What’s more, the four-week average of initial claims rose by 6,500 to 285,000, the Labor Department said. The last time the more reliable monthly average was that high was last April. Initial claims are still at very low levels — any number below 300,000 is viewed as evidence of a strong labor market. And other gauges such as the more valuable U.S. monthly employment report show that hiring is still going strong. Still, initial claims have risen more than 14% after touching a post-recession low of 256,000 in early October.

Headline: CDC: ‘Dozen or so’ cases of Zika virus among U.S. residents

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that there are at least “a dozen or so” confirmed cases of Zika virus in residents who recently traveled to countries where the mosquito-borne virus is spreading. The agency said it was not able to provide an immediate breakdown by state because states must authorize the release of that information. Several state health departments have reported confirmed cases in recent days. These include: Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey and Texas. The number of cases is from 2015 to date, CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said. Health officials said there is no risk to the public because all the cases so far have been in returning travelers who were likely infected by mosquitos abroad rather than by mosquitos in the U.S. mainland.

Headline: WHO Confirms New Ebola Case in Sierra Leone

The World Health Organization said Thursday a second person has tested positive for Ebola in Sierra Leone, where an outbreak of the virus had been declared over in November. The first case was reported last week when Ebola was detected in the corpse of a young woman who became ill and died on January 12. WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said now the woman’s aunt, who served as her primary caregiver during her illness, has tested positive. He said the aunt was being monitored at a quarantine facility when she developed symptoms on Wednesday. She is now being treated.

Headline: H1N1 swine flu kills 18 in Armenia, three in Georgia: officials

Eighteen people have died from H1N1 swine flu in Armenia in the last two months, the country’s health ministry said on Thursday, but it said there was no risk of a mass outbreak. It said on Jan. 13 that 10 people had died of swine flu in the same period, but on Thursday said the toll had now risen to 18. The ministry said the deaths did not amount to an epidemic. Separately, neighboring Georgia said on Thursday that swine flu had killed three people so far this year. “In January 2016, three death cases caused by the H1N1 virus were confirmed by laboratory tests,” Amiran Gamkrelidze, head of the country’s National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health, said. He told reporters all three victims had been male citizens from western Georgia. Doctors in both countries said the patients who died had complications and had sought medical assistance far too late.

Headline: Caltech Researchers Find Evidence of a Real Ninth Planet

Caltech researchers have found evidence of a giant planet tracing a bizarre, highly elongated orbit in the outer solar system. The object, which the researchers have nicknamed Planet Nine, has a mass about 10 times that of Earth and orbits about 20 times farther from the sun on average than does Neptune (which orbits the sun at an average distance of 2.8 billion miles). In fact, it would take this new planet between 10,000 and 20,000 years to make just one full orbit around the sun. The researchers, Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown, discovered the planet’s existence through mathematical modeling and computer simulations but have not yet observed the object directly. “This would be a real ninth planet,” says Brown, the Richard and Barbara Rosenberg Professor of Planetary Astronomy. “There have only been two true planets discovered since ancient times, and this would be a third. It’s a pretty substantial chunk of our solar system that’s still out there to be found, which is pretty exciting.”
