Israel Strikes Hamas Targets in Gaza After Incendiary Balloons Start Fires in South

Hamas threatens new escalation, demands Qatari aid

Israeli fighter jets struck Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip overnight into Monday, the Israeli military said, after incendiary balloons from the Gaza Strip started three brush fires in the Negev. Reports by Palestinian media said Israel struck targets in the northern and southern Strip, starting Sunday evening. Israeli drones reportedly struck sites used by Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza. In a statement, the Israeli military said it targeted a military compound used by Hamas and “located next to civilian sites, including a school.” Earlier on Sunday, Israel halved the zone in which Gazans are permitted to fish. Meanwhile, Hamas is threatening to ratchet up the rate of airborne arson attacks on Israel if it does not receive millions of dollars in aid from Qatar soon, Channel 13 reported Sunday. The message came after three fires broke out in the Eshkol Region of southern Israel Sunday due to incendiary balloons launched from the Gaza Strip landing on dry brush.

Will Lebanon Fall into the Hands of Iran?

New Nuclear Deal Would Empower the Iranian Regime

There is growing concern among the Lebanese and other Arabs that Iran is planning to exploit the severe political, economic and financial crisis in Lebanon to complete its takeover of the country. Iran already has a political and military presence in Lebanon through its terrorist proxy, Hezbollah. The current crisis, however, is likely to facilitate Iran’s mission of adding Lebanon to the list of countries it already occupies: Syria, Iraq and Yemen. “Iran is already very dangerous without a nuclear bomb. The region is witnessing a state of chaos and agitation by fundamentalist forces, which threaten all Arab countries without exception.” — Mishary Dhayidi, Saudi writer, Al-Arabiya, July 21, 2021. The Arabs appear clearly worried about the perceived apathy of the US and other Western powers towards Iran’s scheme to extend its control to Lebanon. They seem particularly alarmed that Lebanon will meet the same fate as Iraq, Syria and Yemen…. thanks to Iran’s continuous efforts to export terrorism and the “Islamic Revolution” to the Arab countries. The mullahs in Tehran are doubly dangerous: they aspire not only to develop nuclear weapons, but also to occupy Arab states.

Report: Hezbollah commander, IRGC senior official killed in Israeli strikes

Will Russia try to close Syrian airspace to further Israeli airstrikes?

Moscow’s changed line on Israel’s Syria raids followed first Putin-Biden summit

Israeli strikes in Syria reportedly killed a Hezbollah military commander and an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) senior official. The Kan public broadcaster reported that Hezbollah military commander Imad al-Amin was killed in western Syria. The Lebanese terror group confirmed on Telegram that al-Amin was killed “while fulfilling his duties” but did not specify when or how. Saudi outlet Al-Arabiya also reported that a senior official in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Sayed Ahmed Qurayshi, was killed under unknown circumstances in Syria this week. There has been no official confirmation from Iran. A report on Saturday said that Russia intends to curtail Israel’s military operations in Syria by supplying the regime of President Bashar al-Assad with stronger air defenses.

Biden, Iraqi PM to announce end of US combat mission in Iraq

President Joe Biden and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi are expected to announce on Monday that they’ve come to an agreement to end the US military’s combat mission in Iraq by the end of the year, according to a senior Biden administration official. The official said the Iraqi security forces are “battle tested” and have proved themselves “capable” of protecting their country. Still, the Biden administration recognizes that Daesh remains a considerable threat, the official said. The announcement to end the US combat mission in Iraq comes as the US is in the final stages of ending its war in Afghanistan, nearly 20 years after President George W. Bush launched the war in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. Al-Kadhimi faces no shortage of problems. Iranian-backed militias operating inside Iraq have stepped up attacks against US forces in recent months, and a series of devastating hospital fires that left dozens of people dead and soaring coronavirus infections have added fresh layers of frustration for the nation. For Al-Kadhimi, the ability to offer the Iraqi public a date for the end of the US combat presence could be a feather in his cap ahead of the election.

At Least Ten Protestors Dead in Iranian Water Protests

Heavy droughts in Khuzestan in southwest Iran have led to civil unrest and protests that broke out ten days ago. The droughts are the worst in over a century, hitting agriculture and leading to power blackouts. The area is Iran’s main oil-producing region and the wealthiest of the country’s 31 provinces. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on the people to stop protesting. “The enemy will try to use any tool against the revolution, the nation and the people’s interests, so we must be careful not to give him any pretext,” Khamenei posted on on his official website. “The people have expressed their discontent, but we can’t criticize them for that. The water problem is not a minor one, particularly in Khuzestan’s hot climate.” Amnesty International claimed that Iranian security services have used excessive force in dealing with protesters, killing up to ten people. At least 100 people have been arrested in the past 10 nights in 30 cities and towns across Iran.

U.S. intensifies airstrikes in southern Afghanistan. Anxiety is growing. Tensions in Tunisia after president suspends parliament

Another Coup? Violent Protests Erupt In Tunisia As President Suspends Parliament

Tunisian troops surrounded parliament and blocked its speaker from entering after the president suspended the legislature and fired the prime minister following violent nationwide protests over the country’s economic troubles and virus crisis. Protesters celebrated President Kais Saied’s decision late Sunday night, shouting with joy, honking horns and waving Tunisian flags. But his critics accused him of a power grab that threatens Tunisia’s young democracy. Chief among them was the parliament speaker and head of Islamist movement Ennahdha, Rached Ghannouchi, who called it “a coup against the constitution and the (Arab Spring) revolution.” Saied sacked Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and ordered parliament closed for 30 days, following a day of angry street protests against the government’s handling of the Covid pandemic.

World’s Food Supplies In Jeopardy Amid Climate Disasters

Devastating floods in Germany, China, Turkey, and India. Scorching hot weather in the Western U.S. and Canada. Worst frost in two decades across Brazil. These recent weather phenomena are rapidly intensifying and threaten further food inflation already at decade highs. We documented last week Brazil had some of the worst frost conditions in two decades. Temperatures dropped below zero and delivered a massive blow to farmers across the country’s coffee belt. The result has been sky-high coffee prices. Back-to-back heatwaves continue to scorch the Earth across the Western half of the U.S. The corn belt, which spans the Midwest, lacks rainfall, and hot weather could negatively impact crop development, leading to an underwhelming harvest. In Europe, China, Turkey, and India, devastating floods have torn apart towns, damaged farmland, and killed hundreds of people. Torrential rains have the risk of sparking fungal diseases for grain crops. So if it’s a stalled high-pressure system in the Pacific Northwest producing relentless heatwaves or a low-pressure system that resulted in devastating German floods earlier this month – the jet steam’s latest swings have produced incredible weather phenomena such as rain or drought or extreme temperatures. “Things that are happening in one part of the world end up impacting all of us,” said Agnes Kalibata, a United Nations special envoy for the 2021 Food Systems Summit and Rwanda’s former agriculture minister. “We’ve underestimated as a world is just how frequently” weather could seriously disrupt the global food system. Wild weather affects crop yields worldwide this year. Along with a monetary phenomenon by central banks flushing the world with trillions in credit, commodity prices have been pushed to decade extremes. U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization’s food price index is at a decade high and already has tremendous implications on societal trends that have already resulted in uprisings in various emerging market countries. … and it only took Bloomberg six months to catch up with SocGen’s market skeptic Albert Edwards’ warning that surging global food insecurity could result in an Arab Spring redux. Edwards, who, unlike Goldman Sachs, began to worry about food inflation in December. Back then, he outlined similarities in rapid food inflation and how it played a considerable role in sparking unrest and ensuing revolutions in many Arab countries a decade ago.

Drug Resistant Super Bug Fungus Is Now Being Reported In Texas And Washington D.C.

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any better on the global health landscape, along comes one of those pesky drug-resistant superbug fungi. An outbreak of such a “superbug” has spread among patients in hospitals and long-term care facilities in Texas and Washington, D.C., according to CBS News. The 30 day mortality rate for the outbreaks, combined, was 30% the report said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said late last week that the Candida auris fungus preys on people with weak immune systems and that cases were the result of person-to-person transmission. The cases in Texas and Washington, D.C. appear to be unrelated to one another. 101 cases have been identified in Washington D.C. between January and April 2021. Three cases “were isolated as being resistant to all three major classes of anti-fungal medications”, CBS reported. In Texas, 22 cases were identified over the same period, with two cases “being resistant to all three anti-fungal medications, and five resistant to two of the medications”. Dr. Meghan Lyman of the CDC said: “This is really the first time we’ve started seeing clustering of resistance.” People with breathing tubes, feeding tubes or central venous catheters appear to be the most at risk to catch the superbug, the CDC said. The superbug has been reported in hospitals and long-term care facilities around the world.

Utah’s Great Salt Lake drops to lowest level ever recorded

Expanding Western drought sets 122-year record

The southern portion of the Great Salt Lake in Utah has dropped to its lowest level ever, the U.S Geological Survey said Saturday. Lake levels have been declining for some time, but the record-breaking drought hitting the West has accelerated its fall in recent months. Average daily water levels dropped about an inch below the previous record of 4,194 feet, set in 1963, with records dating back to 1847. The drought numbers in Utah this year illustrate how dire the situation is there. The latest U.S Drought Monitor report released on Thursday shows nearly 100% of the state is experiencing extreme drought conditions — level 3 out of 4. To make matters worse, more than two-thirds of the state is now in an exceptional drought — the highest drought level. Just one year ago, there were no exceptional drought conditions reported in Utah. The impacts of the relentless drought are far from over.

Typhoon “In-Fa” makes landfall in Zhejiang, forces 1.5 million people to evacuate, China

Typhoon “In-Fa” made landfall in the Putuo District of the city of Zhoushan, China’s eastern province of Zhejiang at 04:30 UTC on July 25, 2021. At the time of landfall, In-Fa had a maximum wind speed of 137 km/h (85 mph), according to China Meteorological Administration (CMA). Schools, markets, and businesses were closed ahead of landfall and more than 1.5 million people evacuated. Strong winds produced by In-Fa were also felt in Shanghai where about 360 000 people were evacuated and all inbound and outbound flights canceled for its two international airports. Dozens of scheduled trains were canceled, while activity at the two of the world’s largest ports — Shanghai and Ningbo, were temporarily shut down. In-Fa weakened after landfall, but CMA warned it will continue to hover over a ‘wide expanse of eastern China for days,’ bringing heavy rainfall, possibly to areas in Henan still recovering from last week’s massive flooding in which at least 63 people died. Direct economic losses in Henan are estimated at US$2.14 billion (13.9 billion yuan).

Thousands rescued and over 100 dead after monsoon downpours flood western India

Massive landslide in northern India caught on video

Heavy monsoon downpours led to over 100 deaths in western India last week, and the weather pattern over the next few weeks could continue to keep the region at-risk of dangerous flooding and landslides. Rescue teams traveled through floodwater and debris on Saturday as the search for more survivors continued. According to Reuters, the death toll in the region as a result of the monsoon conditions grew to at least 125 on Saturday. Fifty-four deaths were a result of just four landslides that occurred in the Raigad and Ratnagiri districts on Thursday and Friday, local time, The Associated Press reported.
