A strong and shallow earthquake registered by USGS as 6.3 struck 182 km (113 miles) ESE of Kirakira, Solomon Islands on March 6. The agency reports a depth of 8.7 km (5.4 miles). The earthquake was the largest reported near Kirakira in the past year. There are currently no tsunami warnings.
M4.9 earthquake near Edgefield becomes strongest inland earthquake on record in Louisiana
An M4.9 earthquake struck near Edgefield in Louisiana on March 5, becoming the strongest inland earthquake recorded in the state. The USGS reported a depth of 11.1 km (6.9 miles). The earthquake was widely felt across northern Louisiana and parts of neighboring Texas. The unusual quake woke people from sleep, shook furniture, rattled pipes, and raised eyebrows.
