  Chad warned Saturday that flooding of vast fields of crops and locust infestations had added to a severe food crisis in a country already battling chronic malutrition.

"The situation is quite worrying, based on analysis of available data," Agriculture Minister Djimet Adoum said. "After the famine, the ministry is now concerned about flooding of food crops and a locust infestation."  Adoum said that 255,700 hectares (632,000 acres) of land that contained a variety of crops had been flooded, notably in the Mayo Kebbi-Est region in the southeast of the largely semi-desert country.

Areas in the north and east of Chad were also battling a locust invasion, he said, adding that four teams from the anti-locust agency were on the ground in a bid "to save the next harvests". The poverty-stricken central African country is already battling a food crisis that has also effected several
neighbours including Niger and Mali, after a poor crop year in 2009-2010, and a high mortality rate among livestock.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The worst drought to hit U.S. cropland in more than half a century could soon leave Americans reaching deeper into their pockets to fund a luxury that people in few other countries enjoy: affordable meat. Drought-decimated fields have pushed grain prices sky high, and the rising
feed costs have prompted some livestock producers to liquidate their herds. This is expected to shrink the long-term U.S. supply of meat and force up prices at the meat counter. The U.S. Department of Agriculture expects beef and veal prices to rise as much as 4.5 percent this year, and as much as 5 percent in 2013. Pork products could jump by up to 3 percent this year, and as much as 3.5 percent next year.

At a time when high unemployment and rising gasoline prices have U.S. consumers flinching, any rise in grocery bills could chill discretionary spending of the middle class, placing a further drag on the economy."It'll put a hardship on people who are already suffering," said Bob Goldin, executive vice president at food industry consulting firm Technomic. "For most other consumers, it'll be an added b urden to their finances."  Food prices in 2013 are expected to grow faster than normal for the fourth time in seven years. A recent forecast from the USDA has food costs jumping as much as 4 percent.

Here is a side note. #15 stated there were 39.68 million Americans on food stamps.  They also stated, “The U.S. Department of Agriculture is forecasting that enrollment in the food stamp program will exceed 43 million Americans in 2011”.  According to an (AP) report on Oct. 22, 2010, a record 42 million Americans are now depending on food stamps. The number shows the U.S. is headed for a depression.  Just as America was entering the half way mark in 2011, the new stats arrived via the Nation Center Policy Analysis, which reported “More than 44.5 million Americans received SNAP benefits in March, an 11 percent increase from one year ago and nearly 61 percent higher than the same time four years ago” June 3, 2011).  August 4, 2011 CNNMoney reported, “Nearly 15% of the U.S.
population relied on food stamps in May, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. The number of Americans using the government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — more commonly referred to as food stamps — shot to an all-time high of 45.8 million in May, the USDA
reported. That's up 12% from a year ago, and 34% higher than two years ago.”  The Bloomburg report on September 4, 2012 showed the numbers of people forced on food stamps has climbed again.  “Food-stamp use reached a record 46.7 million in June, the government said, as Democrats prepare to nominate President Barack Obama for a second term with the economy as a chief issue in the campaign.”
