Headline: Israel’s let-down: Putin-Erdogan hook-up with Iran
The talks between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Reccep Erdogen in St. Petersburg scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 9, are causing trepidation among Israel’s policy-makers and military leaders. Their summit takes place on the sidelines of the G-20 summit, concluding nine months of hostility between the two capitals that was sparked by Turkish jets shooting down a Russian SU-24 warplane over the Syrian border on Nov. 24, 2015. For the sake of keeping Iran and Hizballah away from its borders, Israel entered into arrangements with Russia, some of them never published, at the start of Moscow’s military intervention in Syria last September. Those arrangements included coordination of their air force operations over Syria. Now, Israel finds itself suddenly up against a Russian-Turkish partnership aimed at strengthening Iranian domination of Syria – the exact reverse of the Netanyahu government’s objective in resolving its dispute with Ankara and forging deals with Moscow.

Headline: U.S. Warns It Will Respond Harshly If Israel Demolishes Palestinian Village of Sussia
The United States has warned it will respond harshly if Israel demolishes the Palestinian village of Sussia in the southern Hebron Hills. Israeli and American officials, who asked not to be named, said Tuesday that over the past two weeks U.S. administration officials have informed officials in the Prime Minister’s Office and the Defense Ministry that a severe American reaction would result if Israel destroys the houses in the village. The Israeli officials said similar messages were conveyed over the past two weeks by the European Union, the British government and other international bodies. The petition was submitted by the right-wing movement Regavim, which claims the village was built illegally and thus should be demolished by the Civil Administration.

Headline: Hezbollah drone strikes rebel sites in northern Syria
A Hezbollah drone struck militant posts in northern Syria Tuesday, party-run media said, in the first known report of the group using aircraft to strike enemy targets. Hezbollah’s War Media Center said in a tweet that a “resistance-operated aircraft accurately struck several militant targets in the town of Khalsa” in Aleppo’s southern countryside. A video posted by the Center to YouTube shows the drone hitting three targets: a command post, a pickup truck and a militant gathering position. In one scene, a camera attached to the drone shows two bombs being dropped from the aircraft over a target directly below it. The weapons do not appear to be guided. Headline: Saudi Arabia Intercepts Ballistic Missiles Fired From Yemen
Saudi Arabia says its air force has intercepted two ballistic missiles fired from Yemen into the kingdom. A Saudi military statement says the missiles were fired on Wednesday morning toward the cities of Abha and Khamis Mushait, both of which are close to the kingdom’s southern border with Yemen. It says the missiles caused no damage. Yemen’s Shiite rebels known as Houthis are known to have a supply of Soviet-era Scud missiles, seized from the country’s military stockpiles. A Saudi-led coalition has been battling the rebels and their allies since March 2015 in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government. Peace talks to end the conflict collapsed last weekend and Saudi-led forces resumed heavy airstrikes in Yemen on Tuesday. The ballistic missiles likely were a Houthi response to those strikes.

Syria Headline: Iranian media report deployment of elite Iraqi, Lebanese combatants to Aleppo
Syria Headline: Large Hezbollah convoy arrives in southern Aleppo
The jihadist-led Jaish al Fatah broke the siege of the rebel-held eastern Aleppo on Saturday following a week-long battle. The Iranian media outlet Fars News Agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported yesterday on the deployments of IRGC-backed Lebanese Hezbollah and Iraqi Harakat al Nujaba to the southern area of Aleppo. State media have also acknowledged the fatalities of two Iranians since Saturday, including a special forces officer. Lebanese Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Battalion entered the Hamdaniyeh area in western Aleppo to retake the Ramouseh area in the southwest, according to Fars. Ramouseh is the opposition’s access point to Aleppo. The Iranian outlet followed up with a report shortly afterwards quoting a Nujaba official that 2,000 of the militia’s highly trained forces have arrived in Aleppo. These forces have participated in “many operations liberating areas” of Aleppo province, according to Fars. Nujaba’s spokesman has said that it and Hezbollah “are the twins of resistance that can never be loosened or separated.” Both groups have acknowledged fatalities, including field commanders, during the latest battle for Aleppo.

Syria Headline: ISIS takes civilians hostage in Syrian town
Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) is holding hundreds of civilians hostage in a Syrian town north of Aleppo province, where heavy fighting continued Tuesday between the group and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Omar al-Masri, a fighter with the Shams al-Shamal (Northern Sun) Battalions –a rebel group fighting alongside the US-backed SDF– said that their forces have liberated most of Manbij city north of Aleppo from ISIS militants. “ISIS only holds 3% of the city now, but the group has taken civilians as hostage,” Masri told ARA News in central Manbij. He said it’s difficult to attack the group’s final position in the city. “After securing the civilian people, we will take all of Manbij within hours,” he said.

Iraq Headline: Iraqi Army crushes ISIS offensive to capture Syrian border-crossing
The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched an offensive on Monday to capture the Al-Walid border-crossing from the Iraqi Armed Forces after losing this site to the latter last week. ISIS began their offensive by attacking the Iraqi Army’s defenses from the Syrian province of Al-Sweida; this assault would last for nearly three hours on Monday. Following several infiltration attempts, the Islamic State ended their offensive at the Al-Walid border-crossing, leaving the Iraqi Army in full control of this strategic point near the Al-Anbar Governorate. In addition to this attack, the Islamic State also attacked the key desert village of Rutbah; however, this assault would also be foiled by the Iraqi Armed Forces.

Iraq Headline: Attacks outside Baghdad kill at least 10 people
Iraqi officials say separate attacks outside Baghdad have killed at least 10 people. Police say the deadliest attack Wednesday took place in the town of Latifiyah, where a suicide bomber struck an army checkpoint, killing four civilians and three soldiers. They added that 11 others were wounded. The town is located about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad. Police say three more civilians were killed and 12 wounded in a bomb explosion at an outdoor market in Baghdad’s southeast suburb of Nahrawan. Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures.

Headline: Five Turkish soldiers killed in roadside bomb attack
At least five Turkish soldiers were killed and about ten others were wounded on Wednesday when the armored vehicle in which they were traveling was hit by a roadside bomb. The incident occurred in the Uludare district, located in southeastern Turkey near the Iraqi border. The Kurdish PKK underground took responsibility for the attack.

Headline: Turkish admiral ‘seeks asylum in US’ as coup tensions fester
Turkey warned the United States on Tuesday not to sacrifice bilateral ties over Pennsylvania-based preacher Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for the failed coup and wants to see extradited. “If the US does not deliver (Gulen), they will sacrifice relations with Turkey for the sake of a terrorist,” Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag told reporters during a televised briefing in the capital Ankara. Turkey has repeatedly pressed Washington to extradite the 75-year-old cleric to face trial over the July 15 attempted putsch, which saw a rogue military faction try to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Gulen strongly denies Ankara’s accusations and his lawyer on Friday said Turkey had failed to provide “a scintilla” of proof to support its claim.

Headline: Taliban closing in on key Afghan city, official says
Afghan troops are being deployed to the capital of the key southern province of Helmand (red area on map) amid intense fighting with the Taliban in surrounding areas and fears the city could fall to the insurgents within days, officials said Wednesday. According to Kareem Atal, the head of Helmand’s provincial council, Taliban insurgents have completely surrounded Lashkar Gah after weeks of intense fighting across the province. Army and police units have now been pulled back from checkpoints farther afield and brought back to reinforce the city. Also, “new forces are arriving” in the city, he added.

Fresh clashes have erupted in South Sudan between government forces and former rebels, a month after deadly violence which threatened a fragile peace accord, local authorities said Tuesday. The new fighting broke out between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and supporters of former vice-president Riek Machar near the town of Yei, more than 150 kilometers southwest of the capital Juba. It began two days ago in Mugwo, south of Yei on the Kaya Highway, a key road link for supplies en route to Uganda, a local official said. “There is insecurity on the road,” Stephen Ladu, information minister for Yei River state, told AFP. “Clashes started this morning in Kimba,” southwest of Yei along a road leading to the Democratic Republic of Congo, he added. In recent weeks, after the fighting in Juba, other clashes were reported between government forces and former rebels not far from the capital and in the northern town of Leer, although details have been scarce because of the security situation.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) shot down a fighter jet owned by Fajr Libya militia in the northern coastal city of Sirte, killing its pilot Gen. Mukhtar Fakrun. The terror group claimed responsibility for downing the L-39 aircraft via its official social media account Aamaq Agency. Fajr Libya militia has launched a wide-scale offensive dubbed “Bunyan Marsous” against ISIS positions in Sirte. The military operation is backed by US airstrikes as well. On Monday, July 8th, US fighter jets conducted 12 airstrikes against the terror group in the coastal city, killing scores of jihadists and destroying several staging points and vehicles.

Headline: U.S. deploys B-2 bombers to Guam amid North Korea provocations
The United States has deployed three B-2 stealth bombers to the U.S. territory of Guam as North Korea provocations continue to heighten tensions in the region. The U.S. Strategic Command said Tuesday the B-2 bombers were moved from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported. The deployment comes less than a week after North Korea fired two ballistic missiles. One took Japan by surprise when it landed in Tokyo’s exclusive economic zone. Japan recently ordered its Self-Defense Forces to intercept and destroy incoming flying objects. The command, issued on Monday, is to apply to all incoming projectiles.

Vietnam has discreetly fortified several of its islands in the disputed South China Sea with new mobile rocket launchers capable of striking China’s runways and military installations across the vital trade route, according to Western officials. Diplomats and military officers told Reuters that intelligence shows Hanoi has shipped the launchers from the Vietnamese mainland into position on five bases in the Spratly islands in recent months, a move likely to raise tensions with Beijing. The launchers have been hidden from aerial surveillance and they have yet to be armed, but could be made operational with rocket artillery rounds within two or three days, according to the three sources. Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry said the information was “inaccurate”, without elaborating. Deputy Defence Minister, Senior Lieutenant-General Nguyen Chi Vinh, told Reuters in Singapore in June that Hanoi had no such launchers or weapons ready in the Spratlys but reserved the right to take any such measures. “It is within our legitimate right to self-defense to move any of our weapons to any area at any time within our sovereign territory,” he said.
