Headline: Israel’s virtual security zone
Cautious and prudent, Israeli policy over the last five years has largely succeeded in sealing off the Syrian civil war from Israel’s territory.
This has been achieved through the careful cultivation of a working relationship with rebel militias on the other side of the Golan Heights border, along with a readiness to act on occasion decisively to neutralize emergent dangers. The Assad regime and its allies control only a few points along the border. Most of it is held by rebel forces, described by IDF soldiers stationed at one of the border posts as a mix of Jabhat al-Nusra and other free army groups. The southern part of the border, however, is the area of greatest concern. This is held by the Khaled Ibn al-Walid Brigade, a franchise of Islamic State, formerly known as the Shuhada al-Yarmuk Brigades. The Israeli assumption is that, at a certain point, this organization will almost certainly turn its guns against Israel. In the meantime, the two sides watch each other closely. How will all this end? Will the division of Syria hold, making the militia arrangements across the border and the relationships created permanent? Perhaps. But in judging the likely future direction of events, it is necessary to widen the lens and observe events further north. One of the key battles of the Syrian civil war is under way in Aleppo province, far to the north. The regime sealed off rebel-controlled eastern Aleppo in early August. The rebels now appear to have broken the siege. But the outcome is not yet decided. If the regime succeeds in taking Aleppo city back in its entirety, this will mark a decisive setback for the rebellion. It will open the way for a regime campaign to retake the rural north. If this, too, succeeds, it will then be the turn of the southern border area. Such a turn of events is not inevitable, and may not unfold. But if it does, it will mean that the tense but stable arrangements that Israel has built up over the previous half-decade will come to an end. It is possible that the preparations on the border fence are in anticipation of this eventuality. Should it materialize, the virtual security zone established by Israel across the borderline will prove to have been just one of the transient, though fascinating, episodes of the Syrian civil war.

Syria Headline: SDF captures ISIS’s largest stronghold in Aleppo
Following more than two months of bloody clashes in the second largest city in Aleppo governorate, the predominantly Kurdish ‘Syrian Democratic Forces’ (SDF) managed to capture Manbij in its entirety. Mopping operations are ongoing as the Manbij Military Council prepares its official statement of the city’s liberation. With ISIS not willing to cede an inch, many civilians were taken hostage and put at risk of US Coalition airstrikes that have actually killed hundreds of civilians that were used as meat shields by the terror group.

Syria Headline: Syrian Army, Hezbollah launch surprise offensive to capture key town in Latakia
The Syrian Marines, backed by the Desert Hawks Brigade and Hezbollah, launched an imperative offensive on Friday to capture the key Latakia town of Kabbani near the Idlib border. The offensive was launched from two different axes, with the Syrian Marines and Desert Hawks striking Jaysh Al-Fateh’s (Army of Conquest) defenses at the Zuwayqat Mountains, while their allies from Hezbollah attacked from the small hilltops overlooking Kabbani from the west. Following a fierce battle at the Zuwayqat Mountains on Friday afternoon, the Syrian Armed Forces imposed full control over this site, killing several jihadist rebels in the process of their advance. With the Zuwayqat Mountains under their control, the Syrian Armed Forces are now in position to strike Kabbani from the southern perimeter; however, they have yet to attack the town today.

Headline: Turkish lira and the Russian ruble in exchange
Perhaps the most notable development was reported today by Turkey’s Gunes newspaper, which said that as part of the discussion between Putin and Erdogan on Tuesday, the Turkish president suggested to abandon the US dollar in bilateral trade between Turkey and Russia, and instead to transact directly in lira and rubles. This would “benefit both Russia and Turkey”, Erdogan allegedly said in his August 9 meeting in St Petersburg, adding that this would relieve the lira from the USD’s upward pressure. The reason Erdogan is concerned about exchange rates is because recently Turkish inflation soared by nearly 8% Y/Y, and the recent devaluation of the TRY against the USD has only poured more oil on the fire. Needless to say, such a bilateral agreement would further infuriate Turkey’s European “friends”, permanently halting Turkish accession into the customs union, in accordance with Austria’s recent demands, and would in turn lead to a dissolution of the refugee agreement that is still keeping millions in refugees away from Europe in general and Germany, and Merkel’s plunging popularity ratings, in particular. Which, incidentally, means that not only Erdogan, but now also Putin, holds key leverage over the career of Europe’s most important politician.

Libyan forces battling to oust Daesh from Sirte on Wednesday captured a large convention hall complex in the city center, seizing a symbolic base where terrorists once held meetings and flew their black terror flag. Securing the Ouagadougou Conference Center as well as hospital and university buildings would mark the biggest advance made by Libyan forces in weeks. The United States 10 days ago began airstrikes on Sirte, which fighters say hastened their progress. “Our forces have complete control of the whole of the Ouagadougou complex, they even advanced some distance beyond the complex,” Rida Issa, a spokesman in the forces’ media office, said.

Headline: ISIS TERRORIST Tells Feds He Has Jihadist Brothers in Mexico
Earlier this year a top ranking Homeland Security official acknowledged that Mexican drug cartels were helping ISIS sneak across the southern border to scope out targets for terrorist attacks. ISIS operative Shaykh Mahmood Omar Khabir has reportedly been training militants near the US border near Ciudad Juarez for the past year. Khabir actually brags in an Italian newspaper article published last week that the border region is so open that he “could get in with a handful of men, and kill thousands of people in Texas or in Arizona in the space of a few hours.” Today Judicial Watch confirmed reports that ISIS is operating in Mexico. Judicial Watch reported, via Free Republic: An ISIS operative arrested and criminally charged in Ohio this month has confirmed that the terrorist group has cells in Mexico, according to federal authorities. Judicial Watch has reported this for years, documenting it in a series of articles as part of an ongoing investigation on the connection between drug cartels, corruption and terrorism on the southern border. In fact, last spring Judicial Watch broke a story about an ISIS camp just a few miles from El Paso, Texas in an area known as “Anapra” situated just west of Ciudad Juárez in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Headline: Blast wounds 13 in Pakistani city on edge after big suicide attack
A roadside bomb hit a Pakistani security vehicle and wounded 13 people on Thursday in the southwestern city of Quetta, days after a suicide bombing at a hospital killed at least 74 people, most of them lawyers, officials and media said. The driver of the police pickup truck managed to drive the damaged vehicle to the Civil Hospital of Quetta — the same facility hit in Monday’s attack — to get the wounded to medical treatment. The truck was parked outside the hospital with its mangled bonnet, blown-out wheels and blood-stained interior later on Thursday. About 10 police officers were guarding the entrance to the hospital. Provincial interior minister Safaraz Bugti said Thursday’s bomb targeted police escorting a judge, who was not hurt in the attack. “It was a judge’s car that was passing, but I believe it was the police who were the target,” he said on Pakistani television.

In the normally peaceful resort town of Hua Hin, blood-spattered tourists were treated by rescue workers as forensic teams picked through rubble, with police scrambling to reassure visitors the situation was under control. “This is not a terrorist attack. It is just local sabotage that is restricted to limited areas and provinces,” national police deputy spokesman Piyapan Pingmuang said in Bangkok, adding that the authorities were still searching for culprits and a motive. No one has claimed responsibility for the 11 bombings, and the seemingly coordinated attack across five provinces does not match common patterns of violence in the turbulent nation now under military rule. Analysts said local Muslim insurgent groups could be responsible, but that targeting tourists far from their stronghold would be an unprecedented escalation of a conflict largely contained to the southern border region.

Vladimir Putin summoned his security council and the Russian Navy announced war games in the Black Sea a day after the Russian president accused Ukraine of trying to provoke a conflict over Crimea, which Moscow seized and annexed in 2014. The belligerent posture heightened worries in Ukraine that Russia may plan to ramp up fighting in a war between Kiev and pro-Russian eastern separatists that had been de-escalated by a shaky peace process. Using some of his most aggressive rhetoric against Kiev since the height of the war two years ago, Putin has pledged to take counter-measures against Ukraine, which he accused of sending saboteurs into Crimea to carry out terrorist acts. Ukraine has called the accusations false and says they look like a pretext for Russia to escalate hostilities. Such an escalation could be used by Putin to demand better terms in the Ukraine peace process, or to inflame nationalist passions at home ahead of Russian parliamentary elections next month. The Russian leader met his top military and intelligence service brass on Thursday and reviewed “scenarios for counter-terrorism security measures along the land border, offshore and in Crimean air space,” the Kremlin said.

Headline: Beijing Crosses Washington’s ‘Red Line’ in South China Sea
The Chinese military appears to be dramatically increasing its presence around a key island in the South China Sea, sending a strong message to Washington. As Beijing continues its land reclamation projects in the South China Sea, Washington has remained adamant about one island in particular: Scarborough Shoal. Located northeast of the Spratly archipelago, it is claimed by China, Taiwan, and the Philippines, and the US has maintained that any attempts to militarize the shoal would cross a “red line.” While China has maintained a small presence of two or three maritime security vessels around Scarborough Shoal, that number has escalated in the last few weeks. US officials familiar with intelligence reports tell the Washington Free Beacon that there are now over a dozen Chinese ships in the area. In addition to security vessels, Beijing will also permit hundreds of fishing vessels to harvest the rich waters around Scarborough Shoal. This tactic was similarly deployed in the East China Sea, where Beijing sought to legitimize its claim to the Senkakus, islands claimed by both China (where they are known as the Diaoyus) and Japan.
