This action by the president is causing massive exits from the US military in his adding to the decline of America getting ready for the antichrist to take power in these last days.
Here is a little background as to what the word of God says about the military man of sin.
He Will Worship Military Power (vv. 38-39). While Antichrist will exalt himself above all gods, he will, nevertheless, worship a god—“the god of fortresses.” This may mean that as an arrogant dictator, he will trust only in military might. Or, as verse 39 implies, he will trust in a “foreign god” (Satan himself [see Rev. 13]), whom he will proclaim to reveal incarnately (as Antiochus did of Zeus). Either way, the result will be military conquest. As pictured in Daniel 7:8, the Antichrist (“little horn”) will uproot three horns of the ten-horned kingdom/beast, which represents the worldwide Roman Empire. This suggests that the ten-kingdom final form of the Roman Empire will already be in place before Antichrist appears and makes his move to dominate. The world war that will erupt from this effort will produce the effects pictured by the four horsemen of the Apocalypse (Rev. 6:1-8).

After I made the above video I went to the store and bought a dozen eggs. The price in the video warned of a dozen eggs being priced at $4.00 however, the price was even higher as you can see from what I just paid. I checked out the price for 18 eggs and it was just over $9.00 bucks.

Several kohanim, levi’im (ancestral Levites) and crowds of parents and children assembled on the Armon HaNatziv Promenade, just south of the Old City of Jerusalem, on the day after the official Shavuot holiday to newly re-enact this most joyous and beautiful ceremony, marking the time in the calendar when the wheat has just ripened and the first fruits of the season are ready for picking and eating by the entire populace. “We’ve come here because we want to be part of the End of Times and prophecy,” said a woman, who learned of the event through the Temple Institute website, to Breaking Israel News. What is important to understand is that the Shavuot holiday has not been celebrated in this manner for nearly 2,000 years. When the Great Temple stood at the center of Jerusalem, the entire populace celebrated this agricultural festival, which was harmonized directly with the agricultural activities that were the mainstay of industry in the Land of Israel.

President Obama took a step toward a tougher line with Israel in an interview released Tuesday, raising the possibility that the U.S. will allow a United Nations vote on issues related to the Palestinians if the two sides make no meaningful movement toward peace. In an interview with an Israeli television station, Obama noted that his administration has “up until this point” quashed such efforts at the U.N. while insisting that the Israelis and Palestinians must negotiate a resolution. But he said it is a challenge for the U.S. to keep demanding that the Palestinians negotiate in good faith if no one believes the Israelis are doing the same. “How do we move off what appears right now to be a hopeless situation and move it back towards a hopeful situation?” Obama asked in the interview. “That will require more than just words. That will require some actions. And that’s going to be hard work, though, because right now I think there’s not a lot of confidence in the process.” The comment was the latest sign that Obama has concluded that the U.S. must rethink its stance on the Mideast peace process if it is to maintain credibility in the world.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu tore into British students Wednesday for joining the Boycott Israel movement, while a British official tried to cover up a government boycott action by promising a “commitment” to trade with Israel. The National Union of Students in Britain voted Tuesday to join the BDS movement to boycott Israel. The move has little practical effect but is an important propaganda victory for the Boycott Israel movement. The British government, along with France and several other countries, also have boycotted Israel by banning companies in their countries from staging an exhibition at this week’s seventh annual Israel Defense Expo in Tel Aviv. Rob Dixon, Britain’s Deputy Ambassador to Israel, ignored the ban at the exhibition, as if it didn’t happen, and assured Israel on Wednesday that his government is against BDS and is “committed to advancing trade links” with Israel. From the BDS website: “The global movement for a campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it complies with international law and Palestinian rights was initiated by Palestinian civil society in 2005, and is coordinated by the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), established in 2007. Hezbollah fighters Wednesday seized at least 15 positions from militants on the outskirts of a volatile northeastern border town, killing at least 11 militants, a security source said. The source told The Daily Star Hezbollah fighters captured positions on the northern and southern outskirts of Lebanon’s Arsal along the porous mountain range on Syria’s western border. Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV said Wednesday Hezbollah fighters had seized control over Jabal al-Zaroub and Wadi Abu Daher, in addition to several other positions on Arsal’s outskirts. They also captured positions south of the border town, the report said, including the strategic Al-Sharouq peak. That position overlooks the areas of Al-Rahwe, Wadi al-Khayl and Wadi Atneen, allowing Hezbollah to target militant bases in the southern portion of the town’s outskirts. The party pounded militant positions in the area, destroying three armed vehicles belonging to the Nusra Front, Al-Manar reported, adding that jihadis fled en masse. It said the militants set fire to their tents before fleeing. Following Hezbollah’s offensive, militants retreated in the direction of Arsal’s southern outskirts, particularly the areas of Wadi Atneen and Wadi al-Khayl, Al-Manar said. The report said those two areas host the Nusra Front’s central command for Qalamoun.

Headline: 2 Egyptian police killed in Pyramids terror attack
Gunmen on a speeding motorcycle opened fire outside the plateau of the famed Giza Pyramids on the outskirts of Cairo on Wednesday, killing two members of the country’s tourist police, Egypt’s state news agency reported. The drive-by shooting was a rare attack at a tourist site. The state MENA news agency said the gunmen fled the area and that an investigation was underway. The surge in violence has followed the military’s ouster in 2013 of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and a crackdown on his group, the 87-year old Muslim Brotherhood, landing most of its leadership and thousands of its supporters in jail. Militants say the attacks are meant to avenge the crackdown. Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis — which has claimed most of the major attacks in Egypt — has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State extremist group fighting in Iraq and Syria and has declared itself to be the group’s Sinai Province.

Syria Headline: Syrian troops battle to repel Islamic State attack on city
Syrian troops and militia battled on Wednesday to repel an Islamic State attack on the city of Hasaka in the northeast, and a Kurdish official said the government forces may not be able to hold off the jihadists. Hasaka city is divided into zones run separately by the government of President Bashar al-Assad and a Kurdish administration, whose well-organized militia YPG receives air support from a U.S.-led alliance bombing Islamic State. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based group that monitors the war, said Islamic State used car bombs to attack government forces 2 km south of the city. State media reported fighting with Islamic State in the area and air strikes on its positions. “It is a serious attack. An attempt to make up for other losses,” Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Observatory, said. Steady advances by insurgents in Syria have increased military pressure on Assad, whose government increasingly sees western areas near the capital and the coast as its priority in the four-year-old conflict.

Thousands of Iranian and Iraqi fighters have been deployed in Syria in past weeks to bolster the defenses of Damascus and its surroundings, a Syrian security source told AFP on Wednesday. “Around 7,000 Iranian and Iraqi fighters have arrived in Syria over the past few weeks and their first priority is the defense of the capital. The larger contingent is Iraqi,” the source said on condition of anonymity. “The goal is to reach 10,000 men to support the Syrian army and pro-government militias, firstly in Damascus, and then to retake Jisr al-Shughur because it is key to the Mediterranean coast and the Hama region” in central Syria, he added. Syria’s government lost control of Jisr al-Shughur in northwestern Idlib province on April 25, as a coalition of opposition forces including Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front swept through the region. Yesterday, Iran’s official news agency IRNA quoted elite Revolutionary Guards General Qassem Soleimani as saying “in the coming days the world will be surprised by what we are preparing, in cooperation with Syrian military leaders.” The agency cautioned however that it “takes no responsibility for the information.” ***See Kurdish headline below
Iraq Headline: ISIS militants close gates of dam in western Iraq
Islamic State militants have closed gates of a dam on the Euphrates River in western Iraq, reducing the water and giving them greater freedom of movement to attack government forces downstream on the southern bank, local officials said. The militants have redirected the flow of water to their advantage on the battlefield around the city of Ramadi. But the tactic also threatens southern provinces with drought and the water has been reduced to worrying levels, the officials said. The Euphrates has acted as a barrier between the militants who control its northern bank and pro-government forces who are are trying to advance towards Ramadi on the other side. A spokesman for the governor of Anbar province, of which Ramadi is the capital, said security forces would now have to redeploy along the river to prevent the insurgents from infiltrating. “Previously they had to monitor only the bridges and certain areas, but now all of the river will be crossable,” Hikmat Suleiman said.

Iraq Headline: Bombings kill 11 people in Iraq’s capital
Authorities in Iraq say bombings targeting public places have killed 11 people around the capital, Baghdad. Police officials say a bomb exploded Wednesday afternoon near car spare parts shops in the Basmaiya area, just southeast of Baghdad, killing four people and wounding 11. Later on, police say a bomb blast killed three people in a commercial street in Baghdad’s neighborhood of Baiyaa. In two other districts in Baghdad, they say two bombs exploded in public markets, killing four people and wounding 17. Medical officials confirmed the death tolls. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists.

Kurdish Headline: Tehran Government Threatens Iranian Kurdish Peshmerga
The Islamic Republic of Iran is trying to convince Iranian Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) forces to cease fighting Islamic State (IS). Commander of PAK Forces Shamal Pirani told BasNews that the Iranian government is concerned about PAK forces who fight alongside Kurdistan Region Peshmerga. Pirani told BasNews, “The Iranian intelligence service makes phone calls directly to our Peshmerga, trying to convince them to leave the fight against IS and return to Iran.” He also revealed that the Iranian government threatens the families of Peshmerga in Iran and orders them to convince their relatives to return, “A few Peshmerga have left the fight and gone back to Iran as they have been promised amnesty.”

Turkish police detained dozens of people in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast Wednesday, security sources said, in an operation a pro-Kurdish politician described as a “provocation” ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary election. President Tayyip Erdogan seeks a large majority for the ruling AKP to allow it to change the constitution and grant him sweeping executive powers. A big vote for the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), which nationalists accuse of supporting Kurdish armed rebels, could hinder him in that ambition. The security sources said 43 people held in Sirnak province, bordering Syria and Iraq were planning protests on election day, adding that 37 more people were still being sought. Hasip Kaplan, an HDP MP for Sirnak, blamed the AK Party co-founded by Erdogan for the raids in what is an HDP stronghold. “This operation, brought about by the AKP government three days before the election, is in a word a ‘provocation,'” he told Reuters. “But the people will not be stirred up. Headline: ISIL beheads 10 Taliban militants in eastern Afghanistan
A group of ISIL Takfiri terrorists have beheaded 10 Taliban militants in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan after fierce clashes between the two sides, Press TV reports. According to Press TV correspondent, the clash between the two militant groups erupted with an exchange of heavy gunfire in Nangarhar province and then the ISIL terrorists took some of the Taliban militants hostage and cut off their heads. Local authorities have confirmed the report. The ISIL militants have reportedly been recruiting militants in Afghanistan over recent months, in what is believed to be aimed at establishing sanctuaries in areas traditionally seen as Taliban strongholds.

Headline: New Video Suggests ISIS Is About To Expand Into Tunisia
Tunisia is one of the biggest exporters of fighters to ISIS, sending more than 3,000 jihadists into the battlefields of Syria and Iraq, according to some reports. Now, the militant group appears close to setting up a new base in the North African country. Members of ISIS forums published a “teaser” titled “Soon, Soon” that promises a new video by an unknown group called “ISIS Tunisia Province.” The teaser footage claims to show ISIS members monitoring Tunisian soldiers and filming them with a hidden camera from inside a car. Following the releases of the video, ISIS affiliates in other places circulated messages saying that the Tunisian Ministry of the Interior had asked Twitter for information about the people who uploaded the video. The ISIS groups also called on members to use Twitter only with TOR, a browser that allows for anonymous communication. If ISIS indeed is poised to establish a beachhead in Tunisia, it would show much has changed in North Africa since the militant group emerged with a vengeance.
Luke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. Burundi’s police have shot live rounds and tear gas during a demonstration against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid to contest a third term in office. Protesters clashed with the law enforcement officers in the capital, Bujumbura, on Tuesday. Police launched the attack to break up groups of demonstrators trying to gather in the three hotspot neighborhoods of Cibitoke, Musaga, and Nyakabiga. Burundi’s opposition has been calling on the head of state to abandon further presidential aspirations as the country rolls in violence in the run-up to the June 26 presidential polls. More than 30 people have died in the protests that began when Nkurunziza announced in late April that he would stand for reelection after the constitutional court gave him the green light.

Saudi-led air strikes killed a group of around 20 Houthi fighters outside the southern Yemeni port city of Aden on Wednesday and also shook the capital Sanaa in the north, militiamen opposed to the Houthis said. The militia sources said the Houthis were killed when the air raid hit their military convoy as it was transporting an artillery piece toward the northwest suburbs of Aden. The death toll could not be independently verified. Residents in Aden complain of a worsening humanitarian situation as the Arab coalition has imposed a near blockade on food and fuel imports and fighting has cut off the city. In the battle-scarred district of Crater, residents said that four people died of dengue fever on Tuesday. Electricity, water and trash collection have lapsed during the conflict. Houthi officials said there were casualties in the air strikes on Sanaa but gave no further details. Locals saw ambulances racing to the scene. Residents said the warplanes launched at least 10 strikes north of Sanaa, causing massive explosions. Air strikes on Wednesday hit the home of a Houthi leader in the central province of Ibb and targeted areas in the northern province of Saada and the southern province of Lahj, residents said.

Heavy artillery fire was reported around Donetsk city in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday, in what observers described as some of the worst fighting in the months since a shaky ceasefire was declared. The Ukrainian General Command media office said that separatists fired heavy artillery from Donetsk city toward Mariinka early Wednesday. Mariinka has been controlled by Ukrainian government forces and sits on a strategically vital western highway to the city’s west, where checkpoints mark the end of separatist-controlled territory. The General Command said 200 separatist militants attacked Ukrainian positions and there was an exchange of fire for six hours. It denied reports that 25 Ukrainian soldiers were wounded or that their positions were surrounded. Eduard Basurin, a spokesman for the separatist Donetsk People’s Republic, confirmed there were clashes in Mariinka and that the fighting began because of “provocations” by Ukrainian forces. He added that Ukrainian forces shelled the Petrovsky and Kirovsky districts of Donetsk city overnight.

Headline: Drought fears in India after lower monsoon forecast
Media and experts are fearing a drought after India’s metrological department lowered its monsoon rains forecast to 88% this year. Monsoon rains between June to September are crucial for India’s farmers and also for the economy. The forecast in April was about 93% of the long-term average. But the reduced forecast in June has sparked fears of a drought. Millions of farmers across the country depend on monsoon rains for good yields and that eventually helps the economy. But any deficit becomes disastrous for India’s farmers. Usually rains below 90% are believed to bring a drought in several parts of India. The Zee News says it’s “a bad news for the country in general and the agriculture sector in particular”. The India Today magazine says the “Met department has predicted that the country is staring at the prospects of yet another drought”. Other papers like the Hindustan Times have highlighted the monsoon has already been delayed this year. “The arrival of the monsoons has already been delayed in the country’s southern tip, Kerala, by about four-five days and large parts of the country experiencing a searing heat wave which has left near 2,000 people dead,” it says.

Headline: Drought conditions bring damage to crops in South Korea
A drought has hit key crop regions in South Korea, leaving fields bone dry and delaying the country’s planting season. Seoul’s Agriculture Ministry said Wednesday local administrations and the Korea Rural Community Corporation were coordinating a joint response system to the detrimental conditions in areas near Seoul and in rural regions. Regions affected include Incheon, Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported. The Agriculture Ministry said a situation room is to go into operation to monitor the drought conditions in the areas affected. Aerial photos taken on Wednesday showed troubling images of a dried up lake in South Korea’s Gangwon province. Boats that once tugged along the waters were stranded atop a field of green weeds. South Korean television network KBS reported the rivers in the affected places were running at low levels, or at 60 percent. In the city of Paju and 12 other counties near Seoul, 3,521 acres of fields were parched. Another 5,360 acres of fields used to plant potato, corn and cabbage were at the risk of crop failure.

Tropical Storm Blanca’s increasing airstreams and cooling cloud temperatures are two reasons meteorologists are expecting the storm system off the coast of Mexico to develop into a hurricane.The International Space Station’s RapidScat device and NASA’s Aqua satellite aided meteorologists in coming to that conclusion this week, Phys.org reported. Blanca developed early Monday morning and turned into a tropical cyclone late in the day. The system is currently centered about 365 miles southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and is moving west around 1 mph, The Associated Press reported. Information from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) core observatory showed Monday that several areas of powerful precipitation were situated east of Blanca’s midpoint. The storm’s top altitudes also touched heights of more than 9.3 miles, indicating strong thunderstorms, Phys.org noted.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will not cede territory due to the current climate in the Middle East, appearing to rule out the establishment of a Palestinian state. Netanyahu said “any evacuated territory would fall into the hands of Islamic extremism and terror organizations supported by Iran. Therefore, there will be no concessions and no withdrawals. It is simply irrelevant.” The statement was released by his Likud party Sunday. Netanyahu is seeking to appeal to hard-liners ahead of elections next week. Party spokesman Elie Bennett says Netanyahu’s 2009 speech calling for a Palestinian state alongside Israel is not currently relevant. The international community has long pushed for the creation of a Palestinian state on lands captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Netanyahu’s spokesman declined comment.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) is revving its motors, announcing that it is actively preparing legal documents against Israel in the International Criminal Court (ICC). The PA joined the Hague in December. Qais Abd al-Karim, Deputy Secretary General of the ”Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine” (DFLP) terror organization and a member of the National Commission in charge of ties between the PA and ICC, stated Monday that the Commission continues to vigorously prepare legal cases against Israel for Operation Protective Edge in Gaza – during which Israel defended itself from over 3,000 rockets from Hamas – and against “settlements” on Jewish areas of Judea and Samaria. Karim added that the Commission collects “data and evidence” with the help of human rights organizations and is preparing the legal arguments to be presented to the ICC after it is declared “the State of Palestine” by the court on April 1, 2015. He said the Palestinian Authority believes that it has strong legal arguments over whether the communities are “war crimes”, and it will use this against ministers, Knesset members and army officers who lived or still live in Judea-Samaria in what it claims is “contrary to international law.”

Faisal Al-Shoulbaki, director of General Intelligence and a close adviser to King Abdullah II. The visit, encouraged by Obama administration policy, showed one of America’s oldest Sunni Arab allies, recognizing the direction of the trending regional reality to jump the lines over to Tehran. Iran’s grab for Middle East influence is now reaching from four capitals, Baghdad, Damascus, Sanaa, Beirut to a fifth, Amman. Our sources report that Royal Jordanian Air Force fighter jets escorted the Iranian general’s armored motorcade as it drove from Baghdad to Amman through the main highway connecting the two Arab capitals. It is not known whether the king gave Soleimani an audience, but the possibility is not ruled out. His talks with Jordan’s intelligence and military heads ranged widely over the battles in Iraq and Syria against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant-ISIS. This suggests that Jordan has shown willingness to take the first step towards coordinating its policies and military operations with Tehran – not just with Washington as hitherto. Some 12,000 American soldiers are posted to Jordan, most of them members of elite US combat units. Headline: SYRIAN JIHADISTS SIGNAL INTENT FOR LEBANON
Both the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and the al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra (JN) plan to conduct attacks in Lebanon in the near term. Widely presumed to be enemies, recent reports of an upcoming joint JN and ISIS offensive in Lebanon, when coupled with ongoing incidents of cooperation between these groups, indicate that the situation between these groups in Lebanon is as fluid and complicated as in Syria. Although they are direct competitors that have engaged in violent confrontation in other areas, JN and ISIS have co-existed in the Syrian-Lebanese border region since 2013, and their underground networks in southern and western Lebanon may overlap in ways that shape their local relationship. JN and ISIS are each likely to pursue future military operations in Lebanon that serve separate but complementary objectives. Since 2013 both groups have occasionally shown a willingness to cooperate in a limited fashion in order to capitalize on their similar objectives in Lebanon. This unusual relationship appears to be unique to Lebanon and the border region, and does not extend to other battlefronts. Despite recent clashes that likely strained this relationship in February 2015, contention between the groups in this area has not escalated beyond localized skirmishes. This suggests that both parties have a mutual interest in preserving their coexistence in this strategically significant area. In January 2015, JN initiated a new campaign of spectacular attacks against Lebanese supporters of the Syrian regime, while ISIS has increased its mobilization in the border region since airstrikes against ISIS in Syria began in September 2014. Conditions favor a continued limited détente between JN and ISIS past March 2015.

Headline: Saudi Arabia Prepares for Iranian Nuclear Deal
Saudi Arabia is quietly preparing for an international nuclear agreement with Iran that it fears will rehabilitate its Shiite Persian rival. King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud’s approach eschews the public spectacle of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress (indeed, the Saudis don’t want any association with Israel) and instead focuses on regional alliances to contain an emergent Iran. The Saudis publicly welcomed US Secretary of State John Kerry’s assurances in Riyadh last week that Washington will not accept a bad nuclear deal with Iran, and that a deal will not inaugurate a grand rapprochement between Washington and Tehran. They remain deeply skeptical about the negotiations, however, and are preparing for any outcome in the P5+1 process. The Saudis recognize that a successful deal between Iran, the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany will enjoy broad international backing and United Nations endorsement. Riyadh has no interest in being isolated in a dissenting minority with Netanyahu against a deal backed by a global majority. The royal family despises Israel, and Netanyahu is regarded as a war criminal by most Saudis. Any hint of mutual interest with Israel is unpalatable in the kingdom. So the Saudi approach is to strengthen its regional alliances for long-term confrontation with Tehran. Most immediately, this means strengthening the unity of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It has strong allies in Abu Dhabi and Manama. In Riyadh’s eyes, there are two weak links in GCC collusion against Iran: Oman and Qatar. Neither is likely to give up their bilateral lucrative ties to Iran, but Salman is pressing both to adhere to GCC unity and not facilitate Iranian subversion.

A bomb blast outside Harambe police station in central Alexandria wounded four more, while security forces disarmed a third bomb device in the vicinity, security sources said. A fourth bomb went off near the Bab Sharq police station without injuring or killing anyone, Hegazy said. In Qalyubia province, north of Cairo, one policeman and one civilian were wounded in the attack by unidentified gunmen, security sources said.

A U.S.-led coalition air strike in Syria hit an oil refinery run by the Islamic State militant group near the border with Turkey on Sunday, killing 30 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Observatory, said the dead were refinery workers and Islamic State militants. The targeted refinery was just northeast of the town of Tel Abyad near the Turkish border, he said. Asked about the report, a spokesman for the U.S. Combined Joint Task Force overseeing the fight against Islamic State, said: “When an allegation of civilian casualties caused by U.S. or coalition forces is determined to be credible, a thorough investigation would be launched to determine the accuracy of the claim and any circumstances surrounding it.” The spokesman said U.S. and coalition forces had implemented “significant mitigation measures within the targeting process and during the conduct of operations to reduce the potential of civilian casualties and collateral damage.”

An air strike in northwestern Syria hit a camp used by the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front on Sunday, killing at least nine of its fighters, a monitoring group said, in the second big attack on the group there in four days. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four of the dead were foreign fighters. The air strike hit close to Atimah at the Syrian border with Turkey in Idlib province. Last week, the Nusra Front’s top military commander and several other leaders were killed in an air strike in Idlib. The Syrian army said it carried out the attack. The leader of a mainstream rebel group said the latest air strike appeared to have been carried out by the U.S.-led alliance that has been attacking Islamic State in Syria, citing the precision of the strike and the strength of the explosion.

A senior Kurdish military official has said they have information that Islamic State (IS) militants are withdrawing from the strategic town of Hawija in southern Kirkuk, seen as the strongest base of IS in Kirkuk Province. Peshmerga Deputy Minister Anwar Haji Osman told BasNews on Monday that the IS militants have lost confidence and withdrawn from a number of frontlines in the south and east of oil-rich Kirkuk Province. “IS militants can’t defend themselves and are fleeing from a number of frontlines in the area. We have received information that they have withdrawn from Hawija as well and are fleeing toward Mosul,” said Osman. He also said that most of the weapons that IS had in Hawija are now in the hands of Peshmerga forces. “They have also left behind numerous bodies of dead IS militants and a lot of armored vehicles,” added Osman. The Kurdish Commander also revealed that the Peshmerga plan to launch an operation to take Hawija, and IS stronghold.

Iraq Headline: Iraq Praises Iran’s Help in Fight Against ISIS
The top US military official said Monday he is “a bit concerned” about whether the international coalition fighting the Islamic State is sustainable for the longer-term challenge of confronting extremists in other regions. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters traveling with him that the basis of his concern is the possibility of continued sectarian divisions in Iraq. Dempsey said that in military terms the campaign against IS is “on path.” But he put equal emphasis on the importance of sustaining the coalition for the longer term. Shiite dominance in Baghdad upsets predominantly Sunni countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “It won’t be enough to defeat (the Islamic State) just inside Iraq,” Dempsey said after a series of meetings with top government officials, including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who assumed power last September, and Defense Minister Khalid al-Obeidi. Sunni Arab nations, in particular, need to be retained as partners against IS, Dempsey said. “And on that basis I came away with some concerns because the coalition has some concerns about” weak Iraqi governance. “I came away a bit concerned that it’s going to be difficult to sustain the coalition for the rest of the challenge, which is trans-regional, unless the government of Iraq can form that national unity platform to which they committed.” Highlighting those concerns at an earlier joint news conference al-Obeidi said his government is comfortable asking for and receiving help from Shiite-led Iran, a major U.S. adversary and an enemy of key U.S. allies in the Gulf, in its fight against Islamic State militants. “We are in a state of war,” al-Obeidi said, which requires Iraq to seek foreign assistance.

The number of Europeans swelling the Islamic State group’s ranks could reach 10,000 by the end of 2015, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls suggested on Sunday in an interview with French television, AFP reported Sunday. “There are 3,000 Europeans in Iraq and Syria today. When you do a projection for the months to come, there could be 5,000 before summer and 10,000 before the end of the year,” Valls warned, addressing the near three-fold increase of foreign born Islamic State militants. “Do you realize the threat this represents?” he asked. “There have already been nearly 90 French people who have died out there with a weapon in their hand, fighting against our own values.”Different organizations have provided various estimates of how many fighters have joined the Islamic State and other groups like it. According to the Tel-Aviv-based Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, approximately between 6,000 and 7,000 fighters have traveled to Syria alone in order to fight the Assad regime. Meanwhile, the US State Department has suggested that as many as 20,000 fighters from one hundred different countries have passed through both Syria and Iraq.

Heroin traffic through Iraq from Afghanistan is earning the Islamic State over $1 billion dollars a year, Russia’s drug control chief said. Viktor Ivanov, head of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN), said Friday, “The transit of heroin from Afghanistan though the Islamic State-controlled territory is huge financial sponsorship. According to our estimates, IS makes up to $1 billion on Afghan heroin trafficked through its territory.” In November the agency reported that half of all Europe’s heroin supply is brought through Iraq and through some African countries, in each case employing IS militants in the delivery stream. Transfer of heroin has become a reliable income source for IS, the agency said, adding that drug routes across the Gulf of Aden to African countries have increased the number of drug kingpins and pirate gangs. “The area of poppy plantations is growing,” Ivanov said. “This year, I think, we’ll hear news about record-high poppy harvest [and] therefore the high yield of opium and heroin. So this problem should be raised not only in Moscow, but also in the U.N. in general, because this is a threat not only to our country, but also European security.”

The United States has begun to deploy 3,000 troops on a three-month exercise to reassure Russia’s nervous neighbors in the Baltic, military officials said Monday. Operation Atlantic Resolve will see major NATO forces working alongside their allies in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia — former Soviet republics now members of the Western alliance. Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steven Warren said vehicles, helicopters and heavy equipment had begun arriving in the Latvian capital Riga and that the exercises would last 90 days. Warren said the deployed unit was a “Brigade Combat Team” — around 3,000 frontline soldiers. According to a US military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, the equipment would remain behind in the region after the troops of the Third Infantry Division return to base. Earlier, in Riga, US General John O’Connor told AFP the deployment would “demonstrate resolve to President (Vladimir) Putin and Russia that collectively we can come together.”

Militants from Libya’s Islamic State affiliate beheaded eight Libyan guards in an attack on a central oil field last week during which the extremists abducted nine foreigners, a Libyan spokesman said Monday. In the Philippines, authorities said Monday that four of their nationals were among the nine abducted from the oil field. An Austrian, a Czech, a Bangladeshi and a Ghana national were also taken while one hostage remains unidentified. Friday’s attack on the al-Ghani oil field near the town of Zalla, some 750 kilometers (470 miles) southeast of the capital, Tripoli, was part of a series of deadly assaults on Libya’s oil lucrative infrastructure by the Islamic State group. The attacks in recent weeks have forced Libya to declare 11 fields non-operational, including al-Ghani, and invoke a force majeure clause that exempts the state from contractual obligations. Libya’s military spokesman, Ahmed al-Mesmari, warned that Islamic State militants’ long-term goal is to take over Libya’s petroleum industry. “This is the lifeline of the Libyan people,” he said Monday, adding the consequences of such a loss would be dire. During the attack on al-Ghani, an employee watched the beheadings of the eight oil guards and subsequently died of a heart attack, al-Mesmari also said. He not elaborate on how the army knew about the beheadings but the force serving as oil guards is closely allied to the Libyan military, which answers to the eastern-based government, one of Libya’s two rival governments. In the Philippines, Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said Manila was working with the employer of the nine, Austrian-owned VAOS Oil Service, the Libyan government and embassies of the other foreigners abducted. The incident brings the total number of Filipinos missing in Libya to seven. Three others were snatched in another oil field on Feb. 3 and their whereabouts also remain unknown.

Headline: Saudis trying to woo Turkey into joining anti-Iran axis
Turkish sources say that the president dined with Saudi King Salman without bothering to have his food checked. What did grab attention, however, particularly in the Egyptian press, was the reception the Saudis afforded Erdogan in comparison with the welcome committee that greeted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, who was in the country at the same time. The Saudi king received the Egyptian leader in person whereas Erdogan, on his arrival at the airport, was greeted by the local governor and some aides. Clearly the Saudis are able to convey diplomatic messages without being vocal about it. Nevertheless, the very fact of Erdogan’s visit is a milestone in the foreign relations of the two countries. Unlike Salman’s predecessor, King Abdullah, who viewed Erdogan as a rival and Turkey as a country whose influence and power in the Arab Middle East needed to be reined in, Salman apparently has other ideas. Several Saudi commentators who wrote about the two state visits welcomed Erdogan’s trip to the country and noted that Egypt will not dictate Saudi foreign policy or whether Saudi Arabia advances ties with Turkey or not. Saudia Arabia under King Salman is hinting, and not so subtly, that it was King Abdullah’s foreign policy that led to the spread of Iranian influence in the region; that Iran, more than Saudi Arabia, is considered an active combatant against the Islamic State, the organization also known as ISIS and ISIL; and that Saudi mishandling of the situation in Yemen brought about the seizure of power in Yemen by the Houthis, who are supported by Iran. Commentators suggest that Saudi Arabia is seeking to establish an anti-Shi’ite and anti-Iranian axis in which Turkey would play a central role. Such an alliance, however, could not exclude Egypt, which is acting in concert with the Saudis and the leaders of the Gulf states to establish a rapid-deployment joint Arab force that would be comprised of 40,000 soldiers.

More than 50 people were killed and scores wounded in a series of suicide bombings in northern Nigeria on Saturday, witnesses and authorities told CNN. The blasts occurred in Maiduguri, the capital of the tumultuous Borno state, at the city’s main market, a fish market and a bus station. Four suicide bombers — three women and a man — carried out the attacks, according to witnesses. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bloodshed. But the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram has been behind many similar attacks in northern Nigeria and beyond, killing hundreds in recent months as part of its terrorist campaign to bring its twisted version of Sharia law to the region. Clement Adoda, a Borno state police spokesman, said at least 54 people were killed and another 139 wounded in the suicide attacks. Suleiman Bulunkutu said he and others involved in the rescue operation had taken about 50 bodies to the Maiduguri General Hospital morgue. “This toll doesn’t include those taken to three other hospitals,” Bulunkutu said. “Therefore, the final (death) toll may be higher.” In the first blast, a woman dressed in a hijab got off a motorized rickshaw and blew herself up outside the Baga Road fish market around 11:20 a.m. (5:20 a.m. ET), fish trader Mohammed Boni said. The next attack took place about an hour later outside Monday Market, the main one in the city, where people were lined up to go through security. Those measures — in which people are checked for explosives and guns — were set up because of the spate of Boko Haram attacks in the city and region. Two women joined the female security line, one of whom “blew herself up, causing minimal casualty,” said witness Abdulkarim Musa. Then, as people gathered to help, the second woman detonated her explosives, said Musa, who was waiting outside the market in the male security line. The third attack occurred at a bus station.

A rocket attack on a United Nations base in northern Mali has killed three people and wounded at least 12 others. A peacekeeper died when about 30 rockets struck the base in the desert town of Kidal, said the UN mission. Some rockets missed their target, killing two civilians. It is not clear who carried out the attack. Islamist militants are active in the area. Meanwhile an al-Qaeda-linked group said it carried out an attack in the capital which killed five people on Saturday. Al-Murabitoun, an Islamist group led by Algerian militant Mokhtar Belmokhtar, said the attack on a bar in Bamako was a “revenge operation” against the “infidel West”. On Sunday Minusma said the rocket attack on its base in Kidal occurred at about 06:00 GMT. Peacekeepers returned fire. At least one shell fell on a nearby camp for Tuareg and Arab nomads, killing two people and injuring several children, a witness said. Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants and Tuareg rebels have been fighting the army in northern Mali for a number of years. France, the former colonial power in Mali, intervened two years ago to stop their advance south of Bamako.

At least two militants and two soldiers died in an al Qaeda assault on an army base in southern Yemen early on Monday, officials and residents said, in another sign of unraveling security. The assault on the base in Mahfad in Abyan province was a setback for the country’s splintered military which, alongside local militiamen, had largely expelled Al Qaeda from the area’s towns in 2013. Local sources told Reuters the battle was ongoing and army reinforcements backed by dozens of the armed “popular committees” had come to the soldiers’ aid. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the most active arms of the global militant group, has grown more powerful since “Arab Spring” uprisings rocked Yemen in 2011 and led to splits in its military.

A delegation from the pro-Assad Syrian National Defense Army visited Yemen last week through Beirut International Airport, private sources told ARA News. “Such visits are aimed to increase coordination between the Syrian regime and the Houthi group in Yemen and plan to bring the latter’s members to Syria in order to receive military training as well as to exchang security information between the two sides,” a regime-linked source told ARA News on condition of anonymity. Speaking to ARA News, the Syrian journalist Mazen Jerdi said that social media networking sites recently published pictures of Khamenei, the Islamic Republic guide, in the streets of the Yemeni cities, as well as pictures of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad which were raised by Houthi protesters there. “It’s no more secret that strong relations link the Houthis with both Iran and the Assad regime, and such mutual relations will definitely include military exercises under the direct supervision of Iranian authorities,” Jerdi argued, pointing out that the Houthis will thus lead Yemen and will threaten the southern region of Saudi Arabia as part of the strategic policy of Iran.

The European Central Bank on Monday set out on its massive bond purchase programme, its most audacious scheme yet to ward off deflation and stimulate growth in the single currency area. The ECB’s scheme, known as quantitative easing or QE, is not new, and has already been used by the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England to stimulate their economies. But QE has been a long time coming on mainland Europe and is regarded as the ultimate weapon in the ECB’s vast anti-deflation armoury, the culmination of a long series of unprecedented measures to bring the eurozone’s flat-lining economic recovery back to life. The main European indices closed mostly down on Monday — with investors risk averse in the face of more immediate concerns about Greece — and the euro fell to its lowest level against the dollar in more than 11 years, while bond yields also fell. The ECB hopes that by buying bonds off investors they will invest the money elsewhere, thus boosting growth and preventing a dangerous cycle of falling prices from setting in.

Venezuela will begin installing some 20,000 fingerprint scanners at supermarkets nationwide in a bid to stamp out hoarding and panic buying, which the government blames for long lines and widespread shortages of basic goods. The oil-rich nation has been selectively rolling out the rationing system for months at state-run supermarkets along the western border with Colombia, where smuggling of price-controlled goods is a major problem. On Saturday, President Nicolas Maduro said that seven large private retail chains had voluntarily agreed to install the scanners. “I ask for the the comprehension of all of Venezuela, to understand this problem, because there is a lot of manipulation taking place,” Maduro said at the inauguration of a state-run supermarket. Economists say the effort is bound to fail. They blame decade-old price controls for destroying local manufacturing and attracting smugglers who can resell the goods on the black market and in Colombia for huge gains. In recent days, those profits have become juicier as a result of Venezuela’s tanking currency. The bolivar has slid 35 percent in the past two weeks on the black market and now trades at nearly one-fortieth the official rate used to import food, according to DolarToday, a website that tracks the illegal rate based on currency trades along the border.

The homeless population in the nation’s largest city has exploded to an all-time high, forcing officials to provide shelter to desperate families in dilapidated tenements that have been identified by housing authorities as dangerous.New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio arrived at City Hall following his election on promises to turn the desperation around, but in reality, reports the Daily News, he has had difficulty addressing an age-old problem that has only gotten worse during the Obama years.The paper, on its website, reported that, by mid-December, NYC’s homeless population had swollen to a record 59,068, or larger than the populations of scores of mid-sized cities around the country. One organization, the Coalition for the Homeless, told the paper that its homeless count was higher, at 60,352.As the Daily News further reported:The homeless count, according to the city and the coalition, includes 25,000 children. And it represents a 10% jump from the 53,615 in shelters on de Blasio’s Inauguration Day. To reduce these distressing numbers, the city has tried to move families into scarce permanent housing, but has been forced to continue using much-criticized apartments known as “cluster sites.”

The European Union needs its own army to help address the problem that it is not “taken entirely seriously” as an international force, the president of the European commission has said. Jean-Claude Juncker said such a move would help the EU to persuade Russia that it was serious about defending its values in the face of the threat posed by Moscow. However, his proposal was immediately rejected by the British government, which said that there was “no prospect” of the UK agreeing to the creation of an EU army. “You would not create a European army to use it immediately,” Juncker told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in Germany in an interview published on Sunday. “But a common army among the Europeans would convey to Russia that we are serious about defending the values of the European Union.” Juncker, who has been a longstanding advocate of an EU army, said getting member states to combine militarily would make spending more efficient and would encourage further European integration.

The United States on Monday declared Venezuela a national security threat and ordered sanctions against seven officials in the worst diplomatic dispute with the oil-rich country since socialist President Nicolas Maduro took office in 2013. President Barack Obama issued and signed the executive order, which senior administration officials said did not target the energy sector or Venezuela’s broader economy. The move raises tensions between Washington and the OPEC member just as U.S. relations with Cuba, another longtime U.S. foe in Latin America, are set to be normalized. Declaring a country a national security threat is the first step in starting a sanctions regime. The same process has been followed with countries such as Iran and Syria, U.S. officials said. The White House said the executive order targeted people whose actions undermined democratic processes or institutions, had committed acts of violence or abuse of human rights, were involved in prohibiting or penalizing freedom of expression, or were government officials involved in public corruption. “Venezuelan officials past and present who violate the human rights of Venezuelan citizens and engage in acts of public corruption will not be welcome here, and we now have the tools to block their assets and their use of U.S. financial systems,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement. “We are deeply concerned by the Venezuelan government’s efforts to escalate intimidation of its political opponents. Venezuela’s problems cannot be solved by criminalizing dissent,” he added.

Pakistan has successfully test-fired a new indigenously-developed nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a range of 2,750 kilometers (1,708 miles). According to a statement released by the Pakistani Army’s Directorate of Inter-Services Public Relations, the Monday test launch of solid-fueled surface-to-surface Shaheen-III (Falcon-III) missile, with its impact point in the Arabian Sea, was “aimed at validating various design and technical parameters of the weapon system at maximum range.” Director General for Pakistan’s Strategic Plan Division Lieutenant General Zubair Mahmood Hayat hailed the missile launch as a major step toward upgrading the country’s deterrence capability. The test-fire comes less than a week after the first high-level talks between Islamabad and its arch-rival, New Delhi, in nearly a year. On January 31, India test-fired its longest-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile with the capacity to strike China and Europe.

Headline: Islamic State attacks Christian villages in northeast Syria
Islamic State militants strategically targeted Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria in a series of brutal attacks on Saturday, causing clashes with Kurdish militia in the area. Most of the fighting occurred on the northern banks of the river as ISIS attempted to capture Tal Talmr, a crossroad 35 km from the city of Hassakeh. By capturing the crossroad, ISIS would have a direct corridor to the eastern border of Iraq. The ISIS offensive in the town of Tal Tamr has advanced to numerous surrounding areas. Since they began the offensive in the region, they have gained control of over 10 villages near Tal Tamr. The city is 40 km south of the Turkish border and currently lies under Kurdish control. The attacks come just weeks after the Islamic State kidnapped 220 Assyrian Christians from nearby towns. In the time since the kidnappings, ISIS has released 23 Assyrian Christians.

The US Consulate in Jerusalem is training a force of 35 Palestinians from East Jerusalem to serve as armed guards, particularly for consular trips to the West Bank’s Area A, which is off-limits to Israelis, it was reported on Wednesday. The arrangement violates a 2011 agreement between Israel and the consulate, the Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth stated, whereby only IDF combat veterans would be authorized to carry arms as consulate guards. “The consulate was authorized to keep roughly 100 handguns for security staff, on condition that they be either American diplomats or Israeli army veterans,” the paper’s Itamar Eichner wrote. Additionally, Israeli guards at the consulate alleged that the Palestinians were being trained with firearms in Jericho at a Palestinian Preventative Security base and in the United States.

The United Nations (UN) on Thursday demanded that Israel unlock millions of dollars in taxes it collected for the Palestinian Authority (PA) and froze as a penalty, in response to the PA applying to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) in breach of the Oslo Accords to sue Israel. A senior UN official claimed to the UN Security Council that the freeze of about $127 million imposed on January 3 was in violation of the Oslo Accords. He failed to mentioned that the ICC application was itself a breach, as were the numerous unilateral PA requests to join international treaties that accompanied it. “We call on Israel to immediately resume the transfer of tax revenues,” said UN Assistant Secretary-General Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen. The UN’s criticism joins the bandwagon after the US and European Union (EU) already slammed Israel’s move, with both parties remaining notably silent regarding the PA application to ICC that triggered the Israeli response.

Headline: Hamas Holds Independent Parliament Meeting in Gaza
In yet another sign that the Hamas-Fatah unity government is dysfunctional, Hamas-affiliated parliament members in Gaza on Wednesday reactivated the coastal enclave’s parliament, which had been suspended since the unity deal was agreed upon in April. According to the Ma’an news agency, the convening of the session, which was attended exclusively by Hamas legislators, represents a major eruption of tensions within the Palestinian coalition government and presents yet another hurdle for officials trying to hold the agreement together. The deputy speaker of the Gaza parliament, Ahmad Bahar, delivered a speech at the beginning of the session in which he warned of a possible “blowup” in Gaza as a result of, among other things, the delay in reconstruction the Palestinian Authority’s failure to pay monthly salaries to civil servants employed under the former Hamas government. “A blowup is at a distance of two-bows length or less if the international community does not take action to end the suffering of the people of Gaza,” he warned, according to Ma’an.

The Arab League said on Thursday it will seek to shore up international support for another attempt to obtain a U.N. resolution on ending Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands. The decision at a gathering of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo came after Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas asked them for another chance following the UN Security Council’s rejection of his last bid in December. Those at the meeting gave several Arab countries the task of undertaking “the necessary communications and consultations to submit a new Arab proposal to the Security Council,” a statement said. After last month’s failed U.N. bid, the Palestinians were granted a request to join the International Criminal Court, in a move paving the way for them to pursue Israeli leaders for alleged war crimes.

Iraq on Wednesday donated $28 million to the Arab League as part of its contribution to support the Palestinian Authority (PA), an Iraqi official said, according to the Ma’an news agency. Iraq’s representative to the Arab League, Diya al-Dabbas, said that the payment highlights Iraq’s commitment to the “Palestinian cause.” He condemned Israel’s decision to freeze PA tax funds, a decision which came after the PA applied to join the International Criminal Court, and called on Arab countries to use their economic and financial weight to support the Palestinians. Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi applauded Iraq’s contribution to support the PA’s budget. Iraq’s donation to the PA comes a day after Saudi Arabia said it had provided $60 million in direct support for the PA budget. When a raiding party from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant attacked a Saudi border post last week, it was no mere hit on a desert outpost. The jihadists were launching an assault on the new, highest-profile effort by Saudi Arabia to insulate itself from the chaos engulfing its neighbours. The Saudis are building a 600-mile-long “Great Wall” — a combined fence and ditch — to separate the country from Iraq to the north. Plans for the 600-mile wall and ditch Saudi Arabia will build with Iraq in an effort to insulate itself from the chaos engulfing its neighbors. Much of the area on the Iraqi side is now controlled by Isil, which regards the ultimate capture of Saudi Arabia, home to the “Two Holy Mosques” of Mecca and Medina, as a key goal. The proposal had been discussed since 2006, at the height of the Iraqi civil war, but work began in September last year after Isil’s charge through much of the west and north of the country gave it a substantial land border with the Kingdom to the south. The border zone now includes five layers of fencing with watch towers, night-vision cameras, and radar cameras. Riyadh also sent an extra 30,000 troops to the area.

Headline: Militant leader urges jihad, or holy war, in Egypt
The purported leader of a militant group that has staged several small attacks over the past year in the Egyptian capital has urged holy war, or jihad, calling on the young to join the extremists’ fight. The call came in an hour-long interview with a man identified as Magd Eddin al-Masri, who claims to be the leader of Ajnad Misr, or “Egypt’s Soldiers,” a group that surfaced as part of a rising insurgency in Egypt following the ouster of President Mohammad Morsi in July 2013. The interview by the group’s media arm was posted on social networking sites Sunday. It was the first public appearance of Al-Masri, which is Arabic for “the Egyptian,” and a move apparently aimed at gaining more prominence in the group’s campaign of retribution for the government’s crackdown on Islamists. In the footage, Al-Masri claimed that Egypt is well suited for jihad to avenge the killings, torture and detentions of Islamists in the wake of the authorities’ crackdown on Islamists following Morsi’s ouster. The crackdown has killed hundreds and jailed thousands.

Syria Headline: ISIS control of Syria reportedly expands since start of US-led airstrikes
The Islamic State terror group reportedly has increased the amount of territory they control in Syria as the U.S.-led bombing campaign approaches its four-month anniversary. The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. government and independent assessments, say that the Islamic State, commonly known as ISIS, has control of a large swath of northeastern Syria and is creeping toward key cities in the country’s west, including Aleppo, a center of the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad. The Journal reports that ISIS’ expansion of control can partially be attributed to the U.S. focus on Iraq, where it is working closely with Baghdad to roll back gains made by ISIS last summer. However, as a result, ISIS fighters are flowing into Syria unchecked. In other cases, Syrian rebel groups who once fought against ISIS have been convinced to join their side. The paper also reports that nearly three-quarters of the U.S.-led airstrikes in Syria since Sept. 22 have concentrated on the fight for Kobani, a town near the border with Turkey that has seen fierce fighting between ISIS and Kurds. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the airstrikes had helped Kurdish forces gain an estimated 80 percent of the town, in what would be the first major defeat for ISIS since their current campaign of terror began. However, experts say whatever good the strikes have done in Kobani, they have not prevented ISIS from consolidating their control elsewhere, a truth that some U.S. officials readily acknowledge.

Syria Headline: U.N. envoy: ISIS ‘only 20 miles away from Aleppo’
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is “only 20 miles away” from Syria’s second biggest city of Aleppo, the U.N. peace envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Thursday. “I am just determined to raise the fact that Aleppo cannot be abandoned,” De Mistura said, vowing to press on with efforts for a truce in between government and opposition forces in the city. “We are engaged in intense discussions with the government… and the opposition regarding the freeze,” he said. De Mistura, a Swedish-Italian diplomat appointed as U.N. envoy on Syria in July, said Aleppo was a “symbolic microcosm of all of Syria.” This was so “because it has the highest number of displaced people, because it has seen two years of suffering,” he added. De Mistura said the international community had to make sure that the Syrian conflict did not go in a “backburner,” adding: “Movement towards some kind of political solution should take place this year.”

The Syrian regime forces have killed 43 people including 12 children and four women on Wednesday, according to a statement made by the Syrian Network for Human Rights. The regime attacked cities controlled by opposition forces with missile strikes and barrel bombs, targeting inhabitants of Daraa, Damascus and Homs. In Daraa, 16 people were killed, in the countryside of Damascus 11 people lost their lives. Seven were killed in Hama, five in Homs, two each in Aleppo and Quneitra. Moreover, the Syrian Revolution General Commission announced that the al-Nusra front had managed to seize control of the village of Tal Selmo village in Idlib province. The village is located nearby Abo Zohour airbase, which is controlled by Syrian regime forces. Intensive clashes between the opposition forces of al-Nusra and the Syrian regime forces occurred in the area between Tal Selmo and Abo Zohour. The Syrian regime forces airstrikes have targeted the opposition forces in Idlib, Aleppo and Daraa, the Commission said.

French President Francois Hollande has announced that the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier is ready for use in military operations against Islamic State in Iraq. The warship is to work in cooperation with coalition forces combatting the militants. In a speech onboard the aircraft carrier on Wednesday, Hollande told military personnel that that the Charlie Hebdo massacre carried out by Islamic extremists last week “justifies the presence of our aircraft carrier.” “Thanks to the Charles de Gaulle we will have intelligence … we may also conduct operations in Iraq,” Hollande said. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is the flagship of the French fleet, and is currently cruising off France’s southern coast in the Mediterranean. The carrier is the largest Western European warship currently in commission, and is France’s only nuclear-powered surface vessel. The ship can carry 20 to 25 aircraft, including Super Etendard strike fighter jets, Rafale M multirole fighter jets and Aster missiles. The ship’s deployment, during which it will provide airstrikes against Islamic State militants, is expected to last until May at the earliest.

Iraq Headline: ISIL launches fierce attacks across Iraq
Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have launched a series of attacks in Iraq’s restive region, killing at least 23 people, including several Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers. Sources told Al Jazeera that at least 16 Peshmerga soldiers were killed on Thursday trying to repel an ISIL attack on the Mosul Dam in Nineveh province. The dam, located on the Tigris river, provides electricity to northwestern province of Anbar, which is under ISIL’s control. In another attack, seven fighters from militias fighting against ISIL in Diyala Province were killed in the town of al- Mansuriya. Meanwhile, in the flashpoint town of Sinjar, Peshemerga forces, backed by US-led coalition warplanes, stopped an attack on the town’s southwestern side. The ISIL fighters have since mostly been driven out of the area. The capture of Sinjar by ISIL fighters and the plight of the mostly Yazidi population there was cited by President Barack Obama as one of the reasons for the US military intervention in Iraq. US-led forces launched 12 air strikes against the group’s positions overnight on Wednesday, targeting tactical units, buildings and equipment used by the group, the Combined Joint Task Force said in a statement. Despite nearly 5,000 bombs being dropped against the armed group, General John Allen, the US envoy for the global coalition to counter ISIL, said more time and training was needed to retake ISIL’s stronghold of Mosul. “We expect we will see the effectiveness of this force improve over time and we believe that they will be able to take back the population centres and municipalities,” Allen said.

Headline: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer riles some
The Muslim call to prayer will sound from a bell tower at North Carolina’s Duke University — but not everyone is considering the chant music to the ear. Starting Friday, the Duke Muslim Students Association will chant the call, or adhan, from the Duke Chapel bell tower. The adhan signals the beginning of the weekly prayer service. It’s ubiquitous in Muslim countries the world over; not so in the Carolina piedmont. The call will last three minutes and will be only “moderately amplified,” the school said. Duke, which got its start in the late 19th century with help from the Methodist church, says the move “represents a larger commitment to religious pluralism that is at the heart of Duke’s mission.” “It connects the university to national trends in religious accommodation,” said Christy Lohr Sapp, the chapel’s associate dean for religious life. Various Christian denominations hold prayer and worship services in the chapel. The school also has spaces dedicated spaces on campus for various faiths, including Jews, Hindus and Buddhists. “Just as the bells announce chapel worship in the building on Sundays, the adhan announces Muslim prayers on Fridays,” the chapel said.

Headline: The Islamic State Is Starting A TV Channel
The Islamic State is about to launch its first TV channel, having hitherto relied on social media to spread its violent propaganda. A “teaser” for the new channel was just published on a popular ISIS forum with a link to the page that will host the 24/7 online propaganda channel. As you might expect, it won’t be showing any reruns of Friends. The new channel is set to broadcast only propaganda. The expected lineup will include a new video series by the British ISIS captive John Cantlie and a daily news show, plus repeats of his back catalogue. It will also broadcast a program called “Time to Recruit,” which is likely to discuss the recruitment of new jihadis, every Wednesday at 5 p.m., Islamic State Time (GMT+3). ISIS already runs the FM radio station Al-Bayan, which broadcasts propaganda from the city of Mosul in northern Iraq. A TV station is the latest expansion in the terrorist group’s growing propaganda efforts. ISIS has been actively seeking media and technology recruits of late to bolster production.

Headline: Fierce battle for airport breaks out in Ukraine’s east
Heavy artillery and shelling rocked Ukraine’s east on Thursday as the army and pro-Russian rebels waged a fierce battle for a key airport, forcing monitors to flee and threatening all-out conflict. The fighting came as Ukraine made renewed accusations of a Russian military build up on its border, and approved fresh troop mobilisations in the midst of a wave of violence over recent days. A national day of mourning was also held for 13 people killed on Tuesday when a rocket exploded near a commuter bus travelling towards the Ukrainian city of Donetsk, the worst loss of civilian life since a September truce that only partially halted the violence. The upsurge in fighting that has rocked eastern Ukraine follows the postponement of a planned peace summit between President Petro Poroshenko and the leaders of Russia, Germany and France. Heavy fighting shook the area around the airport in the rebel bastion of Donetsk, while pro-Kremlin insurgents had earlier been accused of unleashing a massive rocket assault. The rebels claimed to have been on the verge of taking control of the airport, but there was no independent confirmation. Ukraine’s military said in a statement on Thursday night that it was still defending the airport under heavy attack by the rebels. An AFP journalist in Vodiane, a few miles west of the airport and where Ukrainian forces transport their dead and wounded, saw one soldier dead and five wounded. Ukraine confirmed two soldiers had been killed.

Headline: Kerry Supports Syrian Peace Talks in Russia
Secretary of State John Kerry voiced support for Russia’s attempt to convene peace talks in Moscow between representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition, even though some leading opposition figures have said they do not plan to attend. “We hope that the Russian efforts could be helpful,” Mr. Kerry said on Wednesday at the start of a meeting here with Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations envoy for the crisis in Syria. Mr. Kerry also praised Mr. de Mistura’s attempt to broker local cease-fires in Syria, starting with the contested city of Aleppo, saying he hoped it could “have effect.” Mr. Kerry’s support for the Russian and United Nations initiatives comes as the American-led push to negotiate a solution to the bloody Syria conflict, the so-called Geneva process, has faltered. The United States has not withdrawn its public insistence that no enduring political settlement is possible as long as President Bashar al-Assad is in power. Nevertheless, Mr. de Mistura’s step-by-step strategy to de-escalate the civil war is attracting growing interest among some Obama administration officials. Mr. Kerry said before the failed peace talks in Geneva last year that the United States’ goal was a transitional government in Syria that did not include Mr. Assad. But he refrained from making such an explicit demand on Wednesday, urging instead that Syria’s leaders rethink their course. “It is time for President Assad, the Assad regime, to put their people first and to think about the consequences of their actions, which are attracting more and more terrorists to Syria, basically because of their efforts to remove Assad,” Mr. Kerry said. Headline: Rouhani Announces Iran is Building Two New Nuclear Plants
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced on Tuesday plans to construct two new nuclear power plants to increase the country’s nuclear-generated power output, Iran’s state-run Fars News Agency reported. “Construction of two new power plants will increase the capacity of Bushehr province’s power generation to 2,000 megawatts,” Rouhani said in a meeting with investors. Earlier on Tuesday, Rouhani visited the Bushehr nuclear power plant and claimed the country is pursuing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The United States, Israel and many of the world’s powers have long suspected that Iran is, in fact, pursuing a clandestine nuclear weapons program. Rouhani asserted, “The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is an example showing that Iran is only looking for a civilian use of the nuclear energy and for power generation.” However, US-based advocacy group The Israel Project said the Iranians will use their new nuclear infrastructure to boost to their “leverage” in negotiations over the country’s nuclear program with the West. “The more they have, the more they have to trade away,” the group said on Wednesday, referring to the November, 2013 interim agreement between Iran and world powers.

Headline: More Than 50 Killed in South Sudan Clashes
More than 50 fighters from both sides of South Sudan’s year-old conflict were killed in clashes last week in oil-producing Upper Nile state, the spokesman for the South Sudan army said Wednesday. SPLA spokesman Philip Aguer blamed the fighting on rebels loyal to former vice president Riek Machar. He said fighting broke out last Thursday in an area northeast of the Upper Nile capital, Malakal, when around 2,000 rebel fighters attacked SPLA bases and positions. Aguer said government forces repulsed the rebels, but only after fierce fighting. He said that after the clashes, “The SPLA… identified 36 killed on the side of the rebels. The SPLA lost 18 in action and 26 wounded.” He also blamed Machar’s rebels for wounding two civilians and a soldier in separate attacks in Bentiu, capital of Unity state.

Muslim clerics in Sudan called Thursday for demonstrations against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo’s for publish a cartoon of the Muslim prophet Mohammed a week after a deadly attack on its offices. Headline: Islamic State blitzkrieg: Germany tracking 50-member terror cell
German authorities are tracking an Islamic State terror cell suspected of having 50 members. Prosecutors told the German newspaper Bild that they are focused on finding a 26-year-old, German-Tunisian man known as “Ayoub B” who traveled to Iraq and Syria with six others. The Telegraph reported Thursday that when Bild tried to find Ayoub B, the newspaper was stopped by German police and told to refrain from investigating further because he was under surveillance. German authorities are concentrating their investigation on the northern city of Wolfsburg, the newspaper reported. News of the terror investigation comes on the same day that German Chancellor Angela Merkel unveiled a nine-point plan for securing the country from the kind of terrorist attacks recently perpetrated in Paris. Ms. Merkel said that new measures will address German citizens who travel to the Middle East with the desire to fight on behalf of radical groups, The Telegraph reported. She then added a caveat to her speech, saying: “Any marginalization of Muslims, any general suspicion is unacceptable. Headline: Turkish premier says a Kurdish state would ‘endanger the region’
A Kurdish state would pose a danger to the region, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in an interview with a German newspaper. “A Kurdish independent state will endanger the region and turn it into chaos,” he told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily. “Changing frontiers will bring about fighting between the neighboring countries, that is why it is better the frontiers remain as they are,” he added, in response to a question about Turkish fears of a Kurdish state in the Middle East. Turkey has strong economic and political ties with its neighboring autonomous Kurdistan Region, but it has remained opposed to Erbil’s aspirations of independence from Iraq. Responding to reports accusing Turkey of helping the Islamic State (ISIS) and other terrorist organizations, Davutoglu reiterated Ankara’s line about removing Bashar al-Assad from power in Syria. “If the international community had taken our advice into consideration or had found an alternative to the Syrian regime there would have been no crimes and atrocities against humanity,” he told the daily. Turkey has always denied accusations of allowing Islamic militants to cross into Syria for jihad. Ankara has acknowledged, however, that Hayat Boumedienne, a suspect wanted in connection with last week’s deadly attacks in Paris, had escaped across the Turkish border into Syria.

Headline: Protesters clash with police in N. Armenia after Russian soldier kills family of 6
Twelve people have reportedly been injured as police were dispersing a rally outside the Russian consulate service in Gyumri, Armenia. Protesters demanded that a Russian serviceman accused of killing six Armenians be handed over to national authorities. Police reportedly fired stun grenades into crowds gathered in Armenia’s second largest city on Thursday after the funeral of the six members of the Avetisyan family killed earlier this week. Russian solider Valery Permyakov is the key suspect in the murder. The solider allegedly gunned the family down with an AK-74, in what is believed to have been a crime of passion. The protesters – who came “in thousands” according to local media – marched from the Shirak province prosecutor’s officeto theconsulate service, and then began hurling stones and bottles at police. Police responded with stun grenades, witnesses reported on Twitter. Live footage also showed smoke rising from the crowd.

Headline: ‘Black Lives Matter’ protesters block Boston highway during morning rush
At least 23 people were arrested Thursday after activists protesting what they call “police and state violence against black people” chained themselves to barriers and blocked a busy Boston area highway at the height of the morning commute. State police say in response to the Thursday morning protest, they shut down Interstate 93 north at East Milton Square south of the city, and I-93 south at Mystic Avenue north of the city. Seventeen protesters were arrested on I-93 south and six on I-93 north, MyFoxBoston.com reports. State police later tweeted that two of the four northbound lanes at East Milton Square reopened to traffic and all the southbound lanes were reopened just after 8 a.m. Authorities said they needed power saws to free some protesters who had chained barrels to themselves. The Boston contingent of Black Lives Matter said in a statement that the protest was intended to “to confront white complacency in the systemic oppression of black people in Boston.”

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says he and his British counterpart are discussing a special initiative to deal with the Boko Haram extremist group in Nigeria and its neighbors. Speaking in the Bulgarian capital on Thursday, Kerry said Boko Haram is “without question one of the most evil and threatening terrorist entities on the planet.” He says their recent attacks in Nigeria’s north is a “crime against humanity” and must be addressed. Kerry said that during breakfast in Sofia with British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, they had talked about setting up a new initiative to address Boko Haram and the situation in Nigeria. He did not elaborate on the idea. The rights group Amnesty International said Thursday that the recent attacks by the radical Islamist group may have killed many more people than the Nigerian government says. The government says about 150 people were killed in attacks that started in Baga in the north-east on January 3, downplaying reports that put the death toll at 2,000. However, satellite images published by Amnesty show that the neighboring towns of Baga or Doron Baga were largely destroyed, with more than 3,700 structures damaged or burned down. “These detailed images show devastation of catastrophic proportions in two towns,” with Doron Baga almost completely wiped off the map, said Daniel Eyre, a Nigeria researcher with Amnesty.

Back in November, before most grasped just how serious the collapse in crude was (and would become, as well as its massive implications), we wrote “How The Petrodollar Quietly Died, And Nobody Noticed“, because for the first time in almost two decades, energy-exporting countries would pull their “petrodollars” out of world markets in 2015. This empirical death of Petrodollar followed years of windfalls for oil exporters such as Russia, Angola, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. Much of that money found its way into financial markets, helping to boost asset prices and keep the cost of borrowing down, through so-called petrodollar recycling. We added that in 2014 “the oil producers will effectively import capital amounting to $7.6 billion. Call it Game Theory gone mad and on steroids. Ironically, when the price of crude started its self-reinforcing plunge, such a death would happen whether the petrodollar participants wanted it, or, as the case may be, were dragged into the abattoir kicking and screaming. It is the latter that seems to have taken place with the one country that many though initially would do everything in its power to have an amicable departure from the Petrodollar and yet whose divorce from the USD has quickly become a very messy affair, with lots of screaming and the occasional artillery shell. As Bloomberg reports Russia “may unseal its $88 billion Reserve Fund and convert some of its foreign-currency holdings into rubles, the latest government effort to prop up an economy veering into its worst slump since 2009.” These are dollars which Russia would have otherwise recycled into US denominated assets. Instead, Russia will purchase even more Rubles and use the proceeds for FX and economic stabilization purposes. “Together with the central bank, we are selling a part of our foreign-currency reserves,” Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said in Moscow today. “We’ll get rubles and place them in deposits for banks, giving liquidity to the economy.” Call it less than amicable divorce, call it what you will: what it is, is Russia violently leaving the ranks of countries that exchange crude for US paper.

Headline: New credit rating agencies to balance ‘Big Three’, China says
The creation of a joint Russian-Chinese credit rating agency will balance the global outlook and give the world an alternative view on how credit ratings should be done, Chinese international relations expert Victor Gao told RT. “Traditionally credit rating is mostly done by Western credit rating agencies. They sometimes may not fully understand the dynamics of the economics of any particular company or the sovereign borrower,” he said, adding that the agency won’t pursue a goal of replacing traditional Western credit rating agencies like S&P and Moody’s. “It will give the whole world another perspective of how risks are analyzed and how credit rating should be done,” he said. Gao believes Western rating agencies claim to be independent and professional, but in fact they turn out to be biased when it comes to issues of geopolitical importance. “During the global financial crisis the Western rating agencies did not react as quickly as possible,” he said. “In terms of the rating of the sovereign debt of the US for example, or even for Japan, they’ve actually displayed much more flexibility in rating these countries compared with many other countries.” The announcement of a rating could actually make a situation even worse rather than help stabilize it, he added.

Headline: Puerto Rico approves 68 percent oil tax increase
Puerto Rico’s governor has signed a law that will increase the excise tax on a barrel of crude oil by 68 percent to help generate funds and sell an anticipated $2.9 billion in bonds. Alejandro Garcia Padilla said Thursday he also will file additional bills to help the government access financial markets. Puerto Rico has said it needs to issue new bonds to help reduce $73 billion in public debt and strengthen public corporations that are struggling financially. The tax per barrel would increase from $9.25 to $15.50 and generate about $178 million a year.

Headline: U.S. jobless claims rise to four-month high
The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits last week increased to the highest level since early September, but the underlying trend continued to point to a strengthening labor market. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose by 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 316,000 for the week ended Jan. 10, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims falling to 291,000 last week. The prior week’s data was revised to show 3,000 more claims received than previously reported.

Gold prices jumped to a 4-month high on Thursday as European shares and the dollar turned lower after a shock move by Switzerland to abandon its three-year cap on the franc sent Europe’s shares and bond yields tumbling. U.S. gold futures for delivery in February settled $30.30 higher, at $,264.80 an ounce, its highest close since early September. Spot gold rose as much to its highest level since Sept. at $1,260.30 an ounce in earlier trade and was last up 2.3 percent at $1,257 an ounce. “Gold is gaining from a risk-off situation because nobody expected the Swiss central bank not to keep that cap, and this has created potential big losses in many places and is obviously triggering some flight to safety,” Saxo Bank senior manager Ole Hansen said. European stocks plunged and the dollar fell 0.2 percent against a basket of main currencies after the Swiss National Bank’s move, which is seen potentially preceding outright money-printing by the European Central Bank at its policy meeting next week.

Headline: Saudi Arabia in oil-price war with Iran, Russia
Saudi Arabia is extending its own international jihad not only through its export of Wahhabism, an extreme form of Sunni Islam. The Islamic kingdom is now going after Russia, a main backer of the kingdom’s sectarian opponent, Shiite Iran, by targeting its oil production clout to adversely impact the Russian economy. Sources say the United States might even be colluding with Saudi Arabia to cause a dramatic drop in the international oil price in an effort to punish Russia not only for its support of rebels in Ukraine but for its backing of embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as well as Iran. The Saudi strategy is to flood the international market to harm the economies of Russia and Iran (and the American Shale industry), both of which need the international price to be above $100 a barrel to break even. The price of oil today is less than $50 a barrel.
Headline: Russia Just Made A Bold Move To Keep Its Gas Leverage On Europe
On Wednesday Russia’s announced that it will shift all its natural gas flows to Europe via Turkey, instead of Ukraine, reports Bloomberg News. “…the Turkish Stream us the only route along which 63 billion cubic metres of Russian gas can be supplied, which at present transit Ukraine. There is no other way,” the head of Gazprom Alexei Miller said. The European Union’s energy chief said that this would hurt Russia’s reputation as a supplier, and the European Commission’s VP for energy union said that the decision makes no economic sense, according to Bloomberg. However, the move makes sense when considering that Russia has been increasingly losing its control over the European gas market after changes in European policy and warmer winters. Now Europe will be forced to link up to Russia’s planned energy pipeline to Turkey — or it will lose Russian gas.

Headline: China enlists citizens to patrol border with North Korea
China is sending civilian militias to help secure the border it shares with North Korea, state media said, in the wake of two reported killings of Chinese citizens by North Koreans that could strain ties between Pyongyang and its sole major ally. The China Defence News said on Wednesday the government had established a civilian-military defense system in the Yanbian prefecture of Jilin province. Yanbian shares a border of about 500 km (310 miles) with North Korea. “China and North Korea are both keeping guard on the border …,” the newspaper said. “The situation is more complicated and relying on just one party would make it difficult to achieve effective control.” The government has also “guided the establishment of militia patrols” to guard border villages. Every 10 neighboring households would have their own border security group and there would be 24-hour video surveillance, the newspaper said. Last week, China said it had lodged a protest with North Korea after media reported that a North Korean army deserter had killed four people during a robbery in the Chinese border city of Helong late last month. State media has raised questions about the China-North Korea relationship, saying that the Chinese government “should not be too accommodating”. The issue of border security has become “very serious”, said Zhang Liangui, a North Korea expert at China’s Central Party School.

Headline: Egypt woman dies of bird flu: 2nd death in January
A 65-year-old Egyptian woman has died from the H5N1 strain of bird flu, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday, the second victim of the virus this month. The World Health Organization (WHO) says there has been a recent jump in the number of H5N1 infections in people in Egypt, but says there does not appear to have been any major genetic change in the flu strain to explain the rise in human cases.

An underwater volcano off the coast of Tonga is spewing ash high into the air – causing air travel chaos and turning the surrounding ocean the colour of blood. The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano is around 40 miles (65km) north of Tonga’s capital Nuku’alofa. Its ash plume has reached heights of more than 14,765ft (4,500 metres) and the eruption has disturbed algae in the region, causing what’s known as a red tide. The volcano, which first erupted in 2009, had been rumbling in recent weeks before exploding violently in the past few days. Brad Scott, a volcanologist at New Zealand agency GNS Science, said volcanic activity had been recorded for several weeks in a stretch of ocean and small islands around 35 miles (60km) north of Nuku’alofa. He believes the volcano may have started beneath the ocean and grown until it reached the surface, essentially creating a new island. But he said details of the eruption still remain unclear. The Wellington Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) confirmed the height of the volcanic ash plume earlier today.
