Senior Fatah official Mahmoud Al-Aloul, who is a member of the Fatah Central Committee, was revealed by Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) as having announcing responsibility the night before on Facebook for the murder of Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin outside Itamar in Samaria. “The Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement Fatah, accepted responsibility for the Itamar operation (i.e. the murder – ed.) carried out against settlers, leading to their deaths,” wrote Al-Aloul in an open admission. Fatah and Hamas officials have both praised the attack, and the praise of the murder by Palestinian Arab terror groups continued on Friday. Meanwhile, Protests erupted nationwide calling to end Arab terror and boost Israel’s deterrence on Friday, after Fatah terrorists murdered Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin in front of their four young children. On Friday afternoon, at least 150 people from Netivot and Sderot near Gaza blocked major intersections to protest the terror, waving Israeli flags and calling to strengthen national unity. “We convened the masses and the youth just as the funeral was being held in Jerusalem,” one participant stated. “True, it’s Friday and we could not participate along with all of Israel at the funeral, but together, we showed that we are as one man with one heart.” “All the people of Israel need to stand tall and continue along proudly,” the participant continued.

Headline: Hundreds of Palestinians Riot Across Israel
Israel Police and the IDF arrested Palestinian Arabs across Israel Friday, after hundreds participated in terror against Israeli military forces and civilians. Over 200 Palestinian Arabs waited for police forces at Rachel’s Tomb in Beit Lehem (Bethlehem) Friday afternoon, throwing rocks and firebombs and burning tires at the Jewish holy site. In Hevron, an angry Arab mob threw burning tires at police forces; no injuries were reported. Earlier Friday, Israel Police arrested a 25 year-old from Shuafat in Jerusalem on suspicion of attempting a terror attack on a Border Police officer in the Old City. The suspect could be seen in security footage trying to throw firebombs at civilians and patrols – just as the Old City is teeming with people due to Shabbat and the Sukkot holiday. Miles away, near Beit El in Samaria, Arabs from Kfar Jilazoun threw burning tires and rocks at IDF forces and civilians along the road leading to the community. In response, hundreds of Jews flocked to the site and blocked the road; the IDF responded by throwing tear gas canisters on both sides clashing at the site and using riot dispersal measures. The chaos follows the brutal murders of Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin, who were murdered by Fatah terrorists late Thursday between Itamar and Elon Moreh in Samaria. The Henkins’ four children were in the vehicle at the time.

As the country’s electorate focuses on the Roseburg shootings, three very important items leaked onto the news wires on Thursday that deserve broad, nationwide attention. Sadly, I am not referring to the drip, drip, drip of Hillary’s emails, the deaths of our service members in a plane crash in Afghanistan, or the attack by a Palestinian terrorist who murdered the parents of four young children. I awoke to a breaking story in Politico with the headline “Exclusive: Obama brushed off Reid’s plea on Palestinian State.” From that story we learn: Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid on two different occasions this year went to White House chief of staff Denis McDonough seeking a public commitment from President Barack Obama that he would veto any U.N. resolution calling for an independent Palestinian state. Both times, Obama did nothing. While this would be unprecedented, so would abstaining from, rather than vetoing, a U.N. resolution condemning the United States for its embargo on Cuba. But that is exactly what the administration is threatening to do. This is arguably treasonous, given that Obama swore to uphold the Constitution and enforce the laws of the country, but given the fact that he has not been impeached for all of his other unconstitutional offenses to date, what does he have to lose by screwing over our most important ally in the Mideast? Shortly after reading the Politico article, I turned my attention to watching Bibi Netanyahu’s much awaited speech before the U.N. General Assembly. Noticeably absent was the United States’ U.N. ambassador, Samantha Power, and Secretary of State John Kerry, both of whom were in New York City for the UNGA events this week. Later in the day Breitbart broke the story with the headline “Obama Pulled John Kerry and Samantha Power from Netanyahu UN Speech.” “Ambassador Power and Secretary Kerry were unable to attend Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech before the General Assembly because they were called into a meeting with President Obama, which they participated in via video teleconference,” a State Department Official told Breitbart News.

Government Spokesperson and Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications Mohammad Momani said the Jordanian government is “angered” by the Israeli violations and this unprecedented aggression motivated by the Jewish holidays. Momani said Jordan rejects both the geographical and time-based divisions of Al Aqsa. The Israeli forces on Thursday resumed their military-imposed closure of Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, allowing Jewish settlers to tour Al Haram Al Sharif compound. The Israeli forces restricted entry for Muslim men and women under 50, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Momani warned Israel of the consequences of such an unprecedented threat that cannot be accepted by any Muslim. He said this breach comes in violation of international laws and conventions that compel an occupier to maintain the status quo in an occupied territory. Momani warned that these escalations by Israel push the region towards “ominous confrontations” and create a fertile ground for radical forces. He pointed that Jordan can and will exert all diplomatic and legal efforts to make Israel stop its flagrant violations.

Along with the silence gimmick, which was the part of his UN address that attracted the most attention, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed for the first time some details about the process of Hezbollah’s rearmament with the help of Iran and Syria. Netanyahu said that Iran has smuggled advanced SA-22 anti-aircraft missiles to Hezbollah in Lebanon as well as Yakhont precision anti-ship cruise missiles. To date, Israel has not submitted any official complaint about this advanced weaponry being in Hezbollah’s hands. At best, when senior Israel Defense Forces officers are asked about these systems, they say that their working assumption is, “Any weapon that Syria and Iran has will eventually find its way to Hezbollah’s hands.” Netanyahu mentioned three types of weapons. The first, the SA-22 (also known as the Pantsyr-S1) is an air defense system combining surface-to-air missiles, air defense cannons and radar; it was developed in Russia in the 1990s. The system is being used by the Syrian army and it can be deployed as a battery or on a vehicle.

Russia has been seeking Egyptian coordination and support for its “counterterror” efforts on behalf of the Bashar al-Assad regime, according to a Kuwaiti daily. “Preparations are being made to organize a visit by a Syrian security delegation, under the auspices of Russia, to meet a number of Egyptian security officials,” Al-Jarida reported Friday. “The task of the delegation is to obtain Cairo’s support in combating terrorism,” a high-level Egyptian source told the daily. During his visit to Moscow on August 26, Egyptian President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi signaled his support for an anti-ISIS alliance that would include the Syrian regime. No formal coalition has since been declared, however reports have emerged that Russia has formed a military alliance with Tehran, Damascus, Baghdad and Hezbollah to coordinate operations in Syria and Iraq. Russia began its airstrikes in Syria on Wednesday, insisting it hit ISIS targets while rebel groups, the US and France all said Russia had bombed Islamist and Free Syrian Army-affiliated rebels. Al-Jarida also reported that Russia has also sought to gain Cairo’s diplomatic support for a resolution to Syria’s civil war. “For the first time Russia is asking Egypt to mediate with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for approval of Bashar al-Assad’s continued [rule] until Syria is cleansed of armed militias over the coming period in exchange for Russian guarantees of a peaceful solution over the coming period,” the source told the newspaper.

Syria Headline: Jihadists on Twitter Respond to Russian Airstrikes in Syria, Call for Capture of Russian Soldiers
Senior U.S. military leaders and defense officials are debating whether military force should be used to protect Washington-backed Syrian rebels who have come under attack by Russian airstrikes in recent days. The Associated Press reported early Friday that the question was part of a broader debate within the Pentagon about the the broader dilemma of how the administration should respond to what White House press secretary Josh Earnest described as Russia’s “indiscriminate military operations against the Syrian opposition.” Tensions between the U.S. and Russia are escalating over Russian airstrikes that are serving to strengthen Syrian President Bashar Assad by targeting the so-called “moderate” rebels rather than hitting Islamic State (ISIS) fighters it promised to attack. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry says Ankara and its allies in the U.S.-led coalition are calling on Russia to immediately cease attacks on the Syrian opposition and to focus on fighting Islamic State militants. Meanwhile, a joint statement by the United States, France, Germany, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Britain expressed concern over Russia’s military actions, saying they will “only fuel more extremism and radicalization.” The text of the statement was released by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Friday, and confirmed by the French Foreign Ministry.

Syria Headline:Chinese warplanes to join Russian air strikes in Syria
Russia’s military intervention in Syria has expanded radically in two directions. debkafile’s military and intelligence sources report that China sent word to Moscow Friday, Oct. 2, that J-15 fighter bombers would shortly join the Russian air campaign. Russia’s military intervention in Syria has five additional participants: China, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Hizballah. The J-15 warplanes will take off from the Chinese Liaoning-CV-16 aircraft carrier, which reached Syrian shores on Sept. 26 (as debkafile exclusively reported at the time). This will be a landmark event for Beijing: its first military operation in the Middle East as well the carrier’s first taste of action in conditions of real combat. Thursday night, China’s foreign minister Wang Yi, made this comment on the Syrian crisis at a UN Security Council session in New York: “The world cannot afford to stand by and look on with folded arms, but must also not arbitrarily interfere (in the crisis).” A no less significant development occurred at about the same time when Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, speaking to the US PBS NewsHour, said he would welcome a deployment of Russian troops to Iraq to fight ISIS forces in his country too. As an added incentive, he noted that this would also give Moscow the chance to deal with the 2,500 Chechen Muslims whom, he said, are fighting with ISIS in Iraq.

Russia is said to be considering Iraq’s offer to allow it to carry out air strikes on Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) in Iraqi territory. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Sept. 30 he may allow Russia to carry out air strikes on the terror group inside Iraq if Moscow offered. It is a possibility. If we get the offer, we will consider it,” Abadi said. On Oct. 1, Russian foreign ministry official Ilya Rogachyov said Moscow would “consider” air strikes against ISIL targets in Iraq if Baghdad asked it to do so. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, however, said Russia had no plans to expand the air operation to Iraq. “We were not invited, we were not asked, and we are polite people, as you know. We don’t come if not invited,” Lavrov said during an Oct. 1 news conference at the United Nations. Iraq Headline: Thousands of Iraqis demonstrate for reforms
Thousands of Iraqis demonstrated in Baghdad and several other cities Friday, urging the government to deliver on its promised reform package aimed at tackling corruption and improving services. Iraqis have been staging weekly protests since July. The movement that stemmed from exasperation over power cuts in the searing summer heat gradually led to broader demands for political reform. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, with backing from the country’s most revered Shiite religious cleric, announced a reform package but change has been slow to materialize and the protests have continued. “Baghdad will no longer be silent,” chanted thousands of protesters in the capital’s Tahrir (liberation in Arabic) Square. Regular protesters — dominated by secular groups, journalists, artists and social activists — were joined Friday by supporters of Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr. “Our participation in the protests continues because the scope of Abadi’s reforms is limited,” said Bashir al-Saadi, a young Sadr supporter. He claimed the prime minister was restrained in his efforts by his own Dawa party — of which his predecessor and rival Nouri al-Maliki is also a member — and other parties.

Turkish security forces killed more than 10 suspected Kurdish militants amid intensifying clashes in the country’s southeast, while 44 people were arrested in Istanbul on suspicion of links with the rebels, officials and media reports said. The exact death toll from clashes in Silvan, a town in southeastern Turkey’s Diyarbakir province, was not immediately clear. A security source said it exceeded 10 people – all members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Among those detained on Friday were district officials of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP), a left-wing grouping accused of having links with the hardline PKK, Hurriyet newspaper said.An HDP spokesman had no immediate information on the arrests, and there was also no comment from Turkish police. The HDP on Friday presented its election platform in which it renewed a promise to seek a settlement to the 31-year war with the PKK. “Despite everything, we say peace,” HDP Co-Chairwoman Figen Yuksekdag said. “We want a grand peace.” Among the 44 people arrested were union members and former district mayors, Turkish media reported. Authorities imposed a 24-hour curfew on Silvan, where two soldiers were shot dead by suspected PKK militants on Thursday as they left for work. Hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived in Syria in the last 10 days and will soon join government forces and their Lebanese Hezbollah allies in a major ground offensive backed by Russian airstrikes, two Lebanese sources told Reuters. “The (Russian) airstrikes will in the near future be accompanied by ground advances by the Syrian army and its allies,” said one of the sources familiar with political and military developments in the conflict. “It is possible that the coming land operations will be focused in the Idlib and Hama countryside,” the source added. The two sources said the operation would be aimed at recapturing territory lost by President Bashar al-Assad’s government to rebels. It points to an emerging military alliance between Russia and Assad’s other main allies — Iran and Hezbollah — focused on recapturing areas of northwestern Syria that were seized by insurgents in rapid advances earlier this year.

Among these nine districts, four district centers have fallen to the Taliban in neighboring Takhar province. These attacks appear to be a united offensive Mullah Akhtar Mansour, the leader of one prominent Taliban faction and self-proclaimed leader of the Taliban following the announcement of the death of Mullah Omar. The coordinated attacks throughout northern Afghanistan indicate a high level of operational capability and sophistication. A prolonged offensive and consolidation of Taliban control in northern Afghanistan could position elements loyal to Mullah Akhatar Mansour for follow-on assaults on several provincial capitals at once and provide Taliban elements with a staging area close to Kabul. Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) retook key elements of Kunduz city on October 1, but heavy fighting continues between ANSF and Taliban militants. The attacks throughout northern Afghanistan indicate that Taliban militants are executing a broader northern offensive in Kunduz, Baghlan, Takhar, and Badakhshan provinces. The northern offensive is supported by Taliban activity along major resupply routes to Kunduz city via Baghlan province, where militants were able to stymie nearly one thousand ANSF reinforcements bound for Kunduz. This lightning offensive is likely designed to reinforce Taliban gains in Kunduz city while the ANSF counter-offensive is underway, but it is also gaining momentum faster than the ANSF is reclaiming territory. The loss of broad swaths of strategically important territory underscores growing ANSF inability to control and hold areas without the intervention of Afghan and NATO Special Forces. Updated 10/2/2015 10:31am (EDT):Mullah Akhtar Mansour emphasized the “symbolic victory” of the Taliban’s capture of Kunduz in his first interview with an international media outlet as the claimed leader of the Taliban. Mansour stated that the victory should silence dissidents doubting the ability of his forces, thus conflating the capture of Kunduz with Mansour’s own legitimacy. This interview confirms that Mansour launched the northern offensive in part to demonstrate his power and suppress opposition. Ongoing leadership disputes within the Taliban likely will fuel continued offensives in Takhar and Baghlan Provinces.

Islamic State militants attacked forces guarding one of Libya’s main oil ports on Thursday with a gun assault and an attempted car bomb in an escalation of their campaign in the North African state, a local security official said. Islamic State has gained ground in Libya where two rival governments — one internationally recognized and the other self-declared — are battling for control, leaving a security vacuum four years after the uprising toppled Muammar Gaddafi. Militants attacked guards at a gate near Es Sider port, which is under the control of forces allied with the recognized government, the security official said. The terminal has been closed since December because of fighting with other rival armed factions and problems at supply oilfields. “An attack was carried out by militants of Islamic State on a gate before sunset in the Es Sider area,” Ali Hassi, spokesman for the a local battalion of the Petroleum Facilities Guard, a force allied with the official government. He said one guard was killed and two more wounded, but he gave no details about how close the gate was to the port itself. Militants later tried to target the same gate with a car bomb but failed and four of them were shot dead, he said.

Four suicide bombers killed at least 10 people in Maiduguri, Nigeria’s army said Friday, after also blaming Islamic extremists for trying to poison water sources in northeastern Nigeria. No group has claimed responsibility for the Thursday night attack but Nigerian security forces blamed the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram, which is based in the area. At least 39 others were wounded in the attack in the Sareji neighborhood of Maiduguri, military spokesman Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman said. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s military on Thursday also accused Boko Haram of poisoning water sources in the northeastern Nigeria. “Credible information … indicates that though no human life was lost as a result of the barbaric act of the terrorists, however, some cattle were killed after drinking water from some poisoned sources,” Usman said. In a separate incident, residents say five people were killed earlier Thursday by suspected Boko Haram militants in Kirchinga, a village in Adamawa state, which borders the Sambisa forest, a Boko Haram hideout. Ahmad Musa, who fled the attack on his village, said militants shot indiscriminately at residents forcing many flee into nearby bushes to escape the onslaught.

Six months of war in Yemen has raised fears for the security of oil supplies through Bab Al-Mandab, a main thoroughfare for vessels heading for the United States or Europe from Asia or the Gulf. Its western shore is controlled by Djibouti and Eritrea. “In a large-scale military operation launched today, Yemeni government, resistance and coalition forces liberated the Bab Al-Mandab Strait and Mayun island with the goal of safeguarding this key sea route,” Rajeh Badi told Reuters by telephone from the southern port city of Aden, 170 km to the east. Yemeni Prime Minister Khaled Bahah, who returned to Aden in mid-September after months of exile in Saudi Arabia, later said on his Twitter account: “On this day, with support from the armed militias, we were victorious. Headline: Deadly Russian rocket system spotted in Ukraine for first time
International monitors say they have spotted a new kind of Russian weapons system in rebel-held Ukraine this week, possible evidence of Moscow’s continued interest in Ukraine even as it focuses on Syria. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, which is monitoring a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, reported that its monitors had seen a mobile TOS-1 ‘Buratino’ weapons system for the first time. The Buratino is equipped with thermobaric warheads which spread a flammable liquid around a target and then ignite it. It can destroy several city blocks in one strike and cause indiscriminate damage. Only Russia produces the system and it was not exported to Ukraine before the conflict broke out, according to IHS Jane’s Group and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, which track arms exports. The OSCE’s findings are embarrassing for the Kremlin, which has turned down its rhetoric on Ukraine and shifted attention to Syria, where it has begun air strikes. The report comes before President Vladimir Putin holds talks in Paris on Friday with the leaders of Germany, France and Ukraine on the peace process. The Russian defense ministry did not reply to written questions from Reuters about whether Ukrainian rebels were supplied with the weapon or where it had been exported.

World economic growth lost momentum in September, with China’s factory output shrinking again, euro zone manufacturing growth slowing, and U.S. activity steady. The latest business surveys across Asia, Europe and the Americas paint a gloomier picture and are likely to prompt more calls for central banks to loosen monetary policy even further. “The data probably increases the case for more stimulus in certain parts of the world, especially from the People’s Bank of China and the European Central Bank,” said Philip Shaw, economist at Investec in London. “Those economies that are at less advanced paths of the recovery cycle — the key example is the euro zone, where we’re looking at more disinflation — may well find more stimulus is in order.” Meanwhile, The disappointing jobs report for September released Friday diminishes but doesn’t entirely eliminate the chance of a Federal Reserve interest-rate increase at its Dec. 15-16 policy meeting, economists said. While the data all but rule out a move this month, a December rate hike remains a live, albeit less-likely, option, they said. Policy makers will get a lot more information about the economy, including two more payrolls reports, before the December meeting. With 13 of 17 Fed officials predicting 2015 liftoff in their latest forecasts, they will be loath to abandon their plans for their first rate increase since 2006 just yet.

An Alabama sheriff has reportedly decided to comply with demands from an atheist group and a First Amendment watchdog that he remove a decal featuring a Bible verse that was placed on patrol cars earlier this year. Despite only being added to Houston County Sheriff’s Office vehicles a few months ago, Sheriff Donald Valenza decided to remove the decals, which included the sheriff office’s badge along with words from Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Legal representation for the county recommended that Valenza remove the decals — though he was reportedly not required to do so — after Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a First Amendment watchdog, threatened to sue, the Dothan Eagle reported. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist group, also sent a letter demanding the removal. “Of course neither the commission nor anyone here supports that request, however we contacted our liability insurance carrier and their attorneys said, if we take this to court, they said we’re going to lose,” Houston County Administrator Bill Dempsey told the Dothan Eagle of the demand for removal. “The county would be looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal expenses.” Many locals — including local government leaders — wanted to see the decal stay, and a Facebook page titled, “I Support Blessed Are The Peace makers on the Houston County Sheriff Cars,” has already attracted 4,700 “likes.” The Freedom From Religion Foundation, though, praised the decision to remove the decals.

A gunman singled out Christians, telling them they would see God in “one second,” during a rampage at an Oregon college Thursday that left at least nine innocent people dead and several more wounded, survivors and authorities said. “[He started] asking people one by one what their religion was. ‘Are you a Christian?’ he would ask them, and if you’re a Christian, stand up. And they would stand up and he said, ‘Good, because you’re a Christian, you are going to see God in just about one second.’ And then he shot and killed them,” Stacy Boylen, whose daughter was wounded at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., told CNN. A Twitter user named @bodhilooney, who said her grandmother was at the scene of the carnage, tweeted that if victims said they were Christian, “then they were shot in the head. If they said no, or didn’t answer, they were shot in the legs.” Gunman Chris Harper-Mercer’s disdain for religion was evident in an online profile, in which he became a member of a “doesn’t like organized religion” group on an Internet dating site. Kortney Moore, 18, said she saw the teacher of her Writing 115 class get shot in the head at the college’s Snyder Hall before the gunman started asking people to state their religion and opening fire, the city’s News-Review newspaper reported.

Governors in six East Coast states have declared a state of emergency Friday as the coast prepares for potential torrential rain and severe flooding from powerful Hurricane Joaquin. The Category 4 storm is unlikely to make direct landfall, but forecasters are warning of flash floods from historic Charleston, South Carolina, to Washington, D C., and officials in Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Delaware are bracing for the worst. “We’re becoming increasingly confident and concerned about the heavy rainfall,” David Novak, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, told the Associated Press. Two storm-related deaths have already occurred in the Carolinas, where heavy rain has fallen for days. The fatal unpredictability of the rain was shown when a Thursday morning downpour dumped 4 inches on Spartanburg, South Carolina in a short time, causing flash floods that submerged several cars. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will not cede territory due to the current climate in the Middle East, appearing to rule out the establishment of a Palestinian state. Netanyahu said “any evacuated territory would fall into the hands of Islamic extremism and terror organizations supported by Iran. Therefore, there will be no concessions and no withdrawals. It is simply irrelevant.” The statement was released by his Likud party Sunday. Netanyahu is seeking to appeal to hard-liners ahead of elections next week. Party spokesman Elie Bennett says Netanyahu’s 2009 speech calling for a Palestinian state alongside Israel is not currently relevant. The Palestinian Authority (PA) is revving its motors, announcing that it is actively preparing legal documents against Israel in the International Criminal Court (ICC). The PA joined the Hague in December. Qais Abd al-Karim, Deputy Secretary General of the ”Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine” (DFLP) terror organization and a member of the National Commission in charge of ties between the PA and ICC, stated Monday that the Commission continues to vigorously prepare legal cases against Israel for Operation Protective Edge in Gaza – during which Israel defended itself from over 3,000 rockets from Hamas – and against “settlements” on Jewish areas of Judea and Samaria. Karim added that the Commission collects “data and evidence” with the help of human rights organizations and is preparing the legal arguments to be presented to the ICC after it is declared “the State of Palestine” by the court on April 1, 2015. He said the Palestinian Authority believes that it has strong legal arguments over whether the communities are “war crimes”, and it will use this against ministers, Knesset members and army officers who lived or still live in Judea-Samaria in what it claims is “contrary to international law.”

His talks with Jordan’s intelligence and military heads ranged widely over the battles in Iraq and Syria against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant-ISIS. This suggests that Jordan has shown willingness to take the first step towards coordinating its policies and military operations with Tehran – not just with Washington as hitherto. Some 12,000 American soldiers are posted to Jordan, most of them members of elite US combat units. Their primary task is to safeguard the throne against threats from Syria and Al Qaeda and its affiliates.

Headline: SYRIAN JIHADISTS SIGNAL INTENT FOR LEBANON
Both the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and the al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra (JN) plan to conduct attacks in Lebanon in the near term. Widely presumed to be enemies, recent reports of an upcoming joint JN and ISIS offensive in Lebanon, when coupled with ongoing incidents of cooperation between these groups, indicate that the situation between these groups in Lebanon is as fluid and complicated as in Syria. Although they are direct competitors that have engaged in violent confrontation in other areas, JN and ISIS have co-existed in the Syrian-Lebanese border region since 2013, and their underground networks in southern and western Lebanon may overlap in ways that shape their local relationship. JN and ISIS are each likely to pursue future military operations in Lebanon that serve separate but complementary objectives. Since 2013 both groups have occasionally shown a willingness to cooperate in a limited fashion in order to capitalize on their similar objectives in Lebanon. This unusual relationship appears to be unique to Lebanon and the border region, and does not extend to other battlefronts. Despite recent clashes that likely strained this relationship in February 2015, contention between the groups in this area has not escalated beyond localized skirmishes. This suggests that both parties have a mutual interest in preserving their coexistence in this strategically significant area. In January 2015, JN initiated a new campaign of spectacular attacks against Lebanese supporters of the Syrian regime, while ISIS has increased its mobilization in the border region since airstrikes against ISIS in Syria began in September 2014. Conditions favor a continued limited détente between JN and ISIS past March 2015.

Headline: Saudi Arabia Prepares for Iranian Nuclear Deal
Saudi Arabia is quietly preparing for an international nuclear agreement with Iran that it fears will rehabilitate its Shiite Persian rival. King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud’s approach eschews the public spectacle of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress (indeed, the Saudis don’t want any association with Israel) and instead focuses on regional alliances to contain an emergent Iran. The Saudis publicly welcomed US Secretary of State John Kerry’s assurances in Riyadh last week that Washington will not accept a bad nuclear deal with Iran, and that a deal will not inaugurate a grand rapprochement between Washington and Tehran. They remain deeply skeptical about the negotiations, however, and are preparing for any outcome in the P5+1 process. The Saudis recognize that a successful deal between Iran, the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany will enjoy broad international backing and United Nations endorsement. Riyadh has no interest in being isolated in a dissenting minority with Netanyahu against a deal backed by a global majority. The royal family despises Israel, and Netanyahu is regarded as a war criminal by most Saudis. Any hint of mutual interest with Israel is unpalatable in the kingdom. So the Saudi approach is to strengthen its regional alliances for long-term confrontation with Tehran. Most immediately, this means strengthening the unity of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It has strong allies in Abu Dhabi and Manama. In Riyadh’s eyes, there are two weak links in GCC collusion against Iran: Oman and Qatar. Neither is likely to give up their bilateral lucrative ties to Iran, but Salman is pressing both to adhere to GCC unity and not facilitate Iranian subversion.

A fourth bomb went off near the Bab Sharq police station without injuring or killing anyone, Hegazy said. In Qalyubia province, north of Cairo, one policeman and one civilian were wounded in the attack by unidentified gunmen, security sources said.

Syria Headline: Air strike on Islamic State-run refinery in Syria kills 30: monitor
A U.S.-led coalition air strike in Syria hit an oil refinery run by the Islamic State militant group near the border with Turkey on Sunday, killing 30 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Observatory, said the dead were refinery workers and Islamic State militants. The targeted refinery was just northeast of the town of Tel Abyad near the Turkish border, he said. Asked about the report, a spokesman for the U.S. Combined Joint Task Force overseeing the fight against Islamic State, said: “When an allegation of civilian casualties caused by U.S. or coalition forces is determined to be credible, a thorough investigation would be launched to determine the accuracy of the claim and any circumstances surrounding it.” The spokesman said U.S. and coalition forces had implemented “significant mitigation measures within the targeting process and during the conduct of operations to reduce the potential of civilian casualties and collateral damage.”

An air strike in northwestern Syria hit a camp used by the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front on Sunday, killing at least nine of its fighters, a monitoring group said, in the second big attack on the group there in four days. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four of the dead were foreign fighters. The air strike hit close to Atimah at the Syrian border with Turkey in Idlib province. Last week, the Nusra Front’s top military commander and several other leaders were killed in an air strike in Idlib. The Syrian army said it carried out the attack. The leader of a mainstream rebel group said the latest air strike appeared to have been carried out by the U.S.-led alliance that has been attacking Islamic State in Syria, citing the precision of the strike and the strength of the explosion.

A senior Kurdish military official has said they have information that Islamic State (IS) militants are withdrawing from the strategic town of Hawija in southern Kirkuk, seen as the strongest base of IS in Kirkuk Province. Peshmerga Deputy Minister Anwar Haji Osman told BasNews on Monday that the IS militants have lost confidence and withdrawn from a number of frontlines in the south and east of oil-rich Kirkuk Province. “IS militants can’t defend themselves and are fleeing from a number of frontlines in the area. We have received information that they have withdrawn from Hawija as well and are fleeing toward Mosul,” said Osman. He also said that most of the weapons that IS had in Hawija are now in the hands of Peshmerga forces. “They have also left behind numerous bodies of dead IS militants and a lot of armored vehicles,” added Osman. The Kurdish Commander also revealed that the Peshmerga plan to launch an operation to take Hawija, and IS stronghold.

Iraq Headline: Iraq Praises Iran’s Help in Fight Against ISIS
The top US military official said Monday he is “a bit concerned” about whether the international coalition fighting the Islamic State is sustainable for the longer-term challenge of confronting extremists in other regions. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters traveling with him that the basis of his concern is the possibility of continued sectarian divisions in Iraq. Dempsey said that in military terms the campaign against IS is “on path.” But he put equal emphasis on the importance of sustaining the coalition for the longer term. Shiite dominance in Baghdad upsets predominantly Sunni countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “It won’t be enough to defeat (the Islamic State) just inside Iraq,” Dempsey said after a series of meetings with top government officials, including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who assumed power last September, and Defense Minister Khalid al-Obeidi. Sunni Arab nations, in particular, need to be retained as partners against IS, Dempsey said. “And on that basis I came away with some concerns because the coalition has some concerns about” weak Iraqi governance. “I came away a bit concerned that it’s going to be difficult to sustain the coalition for the rest of the challenge, which is trans-regional, unless the government of Iraq can form that national unity platform to which they committed.” Highlighting those concerns at an earlier joint news conference al-Obeidi said his government is comfortable asking for and receiving help from Shiite-led Iran, a major U.S. adversary and an enemy of key U.S. allies in the Gulf, in its fight against Islamic State militants. “We are in a state of war,” al-Obeidi said, which requires Iraq to seek foreign assistance.

Headline: French PM warns that 10,000 Europeans may swell ISIS ranks by end of 2015
The number of Europeans swelling the Islamic State group’s ranks could reach 10,000 by the end of 2015, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls suggested on Sunday in an interview with French television, AFP reported Sunday. “There are 3,000 Europeans in Iraq and Syria today. When you do a projection for the months to come, there could be 5,000 before summer and 10,000 before the end of the year,” Valls warned, addressing the near three-fold increase of foreign born Islamic State militants. “Do you realize the threat this represents?” he asked. “There have already been nearly 90 French people who have died out there with a weapon in their hand, fighting against our own values.”Different organizations have provided various estimates of how many fighters have joined the Islamic State and other groups like it. According to the Tel-Aviv-based Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, approximately between 6,000 and 7,000 fighters have traveled to Syria alone in order to fight the Assad regime. Meanwhile, the US State Department has suggested that as many as 20,000 fighters from one hundred different countries have passed through both Syria and Iraq.

Heroin traffic through Iraq from Afghanistan is earning the Islamic State over $1 billion dollars a year, Russia’s drug control chief said. Viktor Ivanov, head of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN), said Friday, “The transit of heroin from Afghanistan though the Islamic State-controlled territory is huge financial sponsorship. According to our estimates, IS makes up to $1 billion on Afghan heroin trafficked through its territory.” In November the agency reported that half of all Europe’s heroin supply is brought through Iraq and through some African countries, in each case employing IS militants in the delivery stream. Transfer of heroin has become a reliable income source for IS, the agency said, adding that drug routes across the Gulf of Aden to African countries have increased the number of drug kingpins and pirate gangs. “The area of poppy plantations is growing,” Ivanov said. “This year, I think, we’ll hear news about record-high poppy harvest [and] therefore the high yield of opium and heroin. So this problem should be raised not only in Moscow, but also in the U.N. in general, because this is a threat not only to our country, but also European security.”

The United States has begun to deploy 3,000 troops on a three-month exercise to reassure Russia’s nervous neighbors in the Baltic, military officials said Monday. Operation Atlantic Resolve will see major NATO forces working alongside their allies in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia — former Soviet republics now members of the Western alliance. Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steven Warren said vehicles, helicopters and heavy equipment had begun arriving in the Latvian capital Riga and that the exercises would last 90 days. Warren said the deployed unit was a “Brigade Combat Team” — around 3,000 frontline soldiers. According to a US military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, the equipment would remain behind in the region after the troops of the Third Infantry Division return to base. Earlier, in Riga, US General John O’Connor told AFP the deployment would “demonstrate resolve to President (Vladimir) Putin and Russia that collectively we can come together.”

Republican senators want to give Iranian leaders — and the president — a refresher on the constitutional balance of power. In a highly unusual move, a group of 47 Republicans in the upper chamber has written to Iran’s top leaders to let them know that any nuclear deal they reach with the United States would be “nothing more than an executive agreement.” Freshman Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) organized the letter, which features signatures from top Republican Senate leadership and potential presidential candidates such as Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky. The following Republican senators did not sign the bill: Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Dan Coats of Indiana, Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Susan Collins of Maine, Bob Corker of Tennessee, Jeff Flake of Arizona and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Democrats blasted the letter, with Minority Whip Dick Durbin calling it a “cynical effort” that lays bare partisan rancor for the world to see. “Understand that if these negotiations fail, a military response to Iran developing their nuclear capability becomes more likely,” Durbin (D-Ill.) said in a written statement. “These Republican Senators should think twice about whether their political stunt is worth the threat of another war in the Middle East.” Responding to the missive on Monday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that “writing a letter like this that appeals to the hardliners in Iran is frankly just the latest in an ongoing [Republican] strategy – a partisan strategy – to interfere” in foreign policy.

Militants from Libya’s Islamic State affiliate beheaded eight Libyan guards in an attack on a central oil field last week during which the extremists abducted nine foreigners, a Libyan spokesman said Monday. In the Philippines, authorities said Monday that four of their nationals were among the nine abducted from the oil field. An Austrian, a Czech, a Bangladeshi and a Ghana national were also taken while one hostage remains unidentified. Friday’s attack on the al-Ghani oil field near the town of Zalla, some 750 kilometers (470 miles) southeast of the capital, Tripoli, was part of a series of deadly assaults on Libya’s oil lucrative infrastructure by the Islamic State group. The attacks in recent weeks have forced Libya to declare 11 fields non-operational, including al-Ghani, and invoke a force majeure clause that exempts the state from contractual obligations. Libya’s military spokesman, Ahmed al-Mesmari, warned that Islamic State militants’ long-term goal is to take over Libya’s petroleum industry. “This is the lifeline of the Libyan people,” he said Monday, adding the consequences of such a loss would be dire. During the attack on al-Ghani, an employee watched the beheadings of the eight oil guards and subsequently died of a heart attack, al-Mesmari also said. He not elaborate on how the army knew about the beheadings but the force serving as oil guards is closely allied to the Libyan military, which answers to the eastern-based government, one of Libya’s two rival governments. In the Philippines, Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said Manila was working with the employer of the nine, Austrian-owned VAOS Oil Service, the Libyan government and embassies of the other foreigners abducted. The incident brings the total number of Filipinos missing in Libya to seven. Three others were snatched in another oil field on Feb. 3 and their whereabouts also remain unknown.

Headline: Saudis trying to woo Turkey into joining anti-Iran axis
Turkish sources say that the president dined with Saudi King Salman without bothering to have his food checked. What did grab attention, however, particularly in the Egyptian press, was the reception the Saudis afforded Erdogan in comparison with the welcome committee that greeted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, who was in the country at the same time. The Saudi king received the Egyptian leader in person whereas Erdogan, on his arrival at the airport, was greeted by the local governor and some aides. Clearly the Saudis are able to convey diplomatic messages without being vocal about it. Nevertheless, the very fact of Erdogan’s visit is a milestone in the foreign relations of the two countries. Unlike Salman’s predecessor, King Abdullah, who viewed Erdogan as a rival and Turkey as a country whose influence and power in the Arab Middle East needed to be reined in, Salman apparently has other ideas. Several Saudi commentators who wrote about the two state visits welcomed Erdogan’s trip to the country and noted that Egypt will not dictate Saudi foreign policy or whether Saudi Arabia advances ties with Turkey or not. Saudia Arabia under King Salman is hinting, and not so subtly, that it was King Abdullah’s foreign policy that led to the spread of Iranian influence in the region; that Iran, more than Saudi Arabia, is considered an active combatant against the Islamic State, the organization also known as ISIS and ISIL; and that Saudi mishandling of the situation in Yemen brought about the seizure of power in Yemen by the Houthis, who are supported by Iran. Commentators suggest that Saudi Arabia is seeking to establish an anti-Shi’ite and anti-Iranian axis in which Turkey would play a central role. Such an alliance, however, could not exclude Egypt, which is acting in concert with the Saudis and the leaders of the Gulf states to establish a rapid-deployment joint Arab force that would be comprised of 40,000 soldiers.

More than 50 people were killed and scores wounded in a series of suicide bombings in northern Nigeria on Saturday, witnesses and authorities told CNN. The blasts occurred in Maiduguri, the capital of the tumultuous Borno state, at the city’s main market, a fish market and a bus station. Four suicide bombers — three women and a man — carried out the attacks, according to witnesses. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bloodshed. But the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram has been behind many similar attacks in northern Nigeria and beyond, killing hundreds in recent months as part of its terrorist campaign to bring its twisted version of Sharia law to the region. Clement Adoda, a Borno state police spokesman, said at least 54 people were killed and another 139 wounded in the suicide attacks. Suleiman Bulunkutu said he and others involved in the rescue operation had taken about 50 bodies to the Maiduguri General Hospital morgue. “This toll doesn’t include those taken to three other hospitals,” Bulunkutu said. “Therefore, the final (death) toll may be higher.” In the first blast, a woman dressed in a hijab got off a motorized rickshaw and blew herself up outside the Baga Road fish market around 11:20 a.m. (5:20 a.m. ET), fish trader Mohammed Boni said. The next attack took place about an hour later outside Monday Market, the main one in the city, where people were lined up to go through security. Those measures — in which people are checked for explosives and guns — were set up because of the spate of Boko Haram attacks in the city and region. Two women joined the female security line, one of whom “blew herself up, causing minimal casualty,” said witness Abdulkarim Musa. A rocket attack on a United Nations base in northern Mali has killed three people and wounded at least 12 others. A peacekeeper died when about 30 rockets struck the base in the desert town of Kidal, said the UN mission. Some rockets missed their target, killing two civilians. It is not clear who carried out the attack. Islamist militants are active in the area. Meanwhile an al-Qaeda-linked group said it carried out an attack in the capital which killed five people on Saturday. Al-Murabitoun, an Islamist group led by Algerian militant Mokhtar Belmokhtar, said the attack on a bar in Bamako was a “revenge operation” against the “infidel West”. On Sunday Minusma said the rocket attack on its base in Kidal occurred at about 06:00 GMT. Peacekeepers returned fire. At least one shell fell on a nearby camp for Tuareg and Arab nomads, killing two people and injuring several children, a witness said. Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants and Tuareg rebels have been fighting the army in northern Mali for a number of years. France, the former colonial power in Mali, intervened two years ago to stop their advance south of Bamako.

At least two militants and two soldiers died in an al Qaeda assault on an army base in southern Yemen early on Monday, officials and residents said, in another sign of unraveling security. The assault on the base in Mahfad in Abyan province was a setback for the country’s splintered military which, alongside local militiamen, had largely expelled Al Qaeda from the area’s towns in 2013. Local sources told Reuters the battle was ongoing and army reinforcements backed by dozens of the armed “popular committees” had come to the soldiers’ aid. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the most active arms of the global militant group, has grown more powerful since “Arab Spring” uprisings rocked Yemen in 2011 and led to splits in its military.

Speaking to ARA News, the Syrian journalist Mazen Jerdi said that social media networking sites recently published pictures of Khamenei, the Islamic Republic guide, in the streets of the Yemeni cities, as well as pictures of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad which were raised by Houthi protesters there. “It’s no more secret that strong relations link the Houthis with both Iran and the Assad regime, and such mutual relations will definitely include military exercises under the direct supervision of Iranian authorities,” Jerdi argued, pointing out that the Houthis will thus lead Yemen and will threaten the southern region of Saudi Arabia as part of the strategic policy of Iran.

The European Central Bank on Monday set out on its massive bond purchase programme, its most audacious scheme yet to ward off deflation and stimulate growth in the single currency area. The ECB’s scheme, known as quantitative easing or QE, is not new, and has already been used by the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England to stimulate their economies. But QE has been a long time coming on mainland Europe and is regarded as the ultimate weapon in the ECB’s vast anti-deflation armoury, the culmination of a long series of unprecedented measures to bring the eurozone’s flat-lining economic recovery back to life. The main European indices closed mostly down on Monday — with investors risk averse in the face of more immediate concerns about Greece — and the euro fell to its lowest level against the dollar in more than 11 years, while bond yields also fell. The ECB hopes that by buying bonds off investors they will invest the money elsewhere, thus boosting growth and preventing a dangerous cycle of falling prices from setting in.

Venezuela will begin installing some 20,000 fingerprint scanners at supermarkets nationwide in a bid to stamp out hoarding and panic buying, which the government blames for long lines and widespread shortages of basic goods. The oil-rich nation has been selectively rolling out the rationing system for months at state-run supermarkets along the western border with Colombia, where smuggling of price-controlled goods is a major problem. On Saturday, President Nicolas Maduro said that seven large private retail chains had voluntarily agreed to install the scanners. “I ask for the the comprehension of all of Venezuela, to understand this problem, because there is a lot of manipulation taking place,” Maduro said at the inauguration of a state-run supermarket. Economists say the effort is bound to fail. They blame decade-old price controls for destroying local manufacturing and attracting smugglers who can resell the goods on the black market and in Colombia for huge gains. In recent days, those profits have become juicier as a result of Venezuela’s tanking currency. The bolivar has slid 35 percent in the past two weeks on the black market and now trades at nearly one-fortieth the official rate used to import food, according to DolarToday, a website that tracks the illegal rate based on currency trades along the border.

The homeless population in the nation’s largest city has exploded to an all-time high, forcing officials to provide shelter to desperate families in dilapidated tenements that have been identified by housing authorities as dangerous.New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio arrived at City Hall following his election on promises to turn the desperation around, but in reality, reports the Daily News, he has had difficulty addressing an age-old problem that has only gotten worse during the Obama years.The paper, on its website, reported that, by mid-December, NYC’s homeless population had swollen to a record 59,068, or larger than the populations of scores of mid-sized cities around the country. One organization, the Coalition for the Homeless, told the paper that its homeless count was higher, at 60,352.As the Daily News further reported:The homeless count, according to the city and the coalition, includes 25,000 children. And it represents a 10% jump from the 53,615 in shelters on de Blasio’s Inauguration Day. To reduce these distressing numbers, the city has tried to move families into scarce permanent housing, but has been forced to continue using much-criticized apartments known as “cluster sites.”

The European Union needs its own army to help address the problem that it is not “taken entirely seriously” as an international force, the president of the European commission has said. Jean-Claude Juncker said such a move would help the EU to persuade Russia that it was serious about defending its values in the face of the threat posed by Moscow. However, his proposal was immediately rejected by the British government, which said that there was “no prospect” of the UK agreeing to the creation of an EU army. “You would not create a European army to use it immediately,” Juncker told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in Germany in an interview published on Sunday. “But a common army among the Europeans would convey to Russia that we are serious about defending the values of the European Union.” Juncker, who has been a longstanding advocate of an EU army, said getting member states to combine militarily would make spending more efficient and would encourage further European integration.

Headline: U.S. declares Venezuela a threat, sanctions top officials
The United States on Monday declared Venezuela a national security threat and ordered sanctions against seven officials in the worst diplomatic dispute with the oil-rich country since socialist President Nicolas Maduro took office in 2013. President Barack Obama issued and signed the executive order, which senior administration officials said did not target the energy sector or Venezuela’s broader economy. The move raises tensions between Washington and the OPEC member just as U.S. relations with Cuba, another longtime U.S. foe in Latin America, are set to be normalized. Declaring a country a national security threat is the first step in starting a sanctions regime. The same process has been followed with countries such as Iran and Syria, U.S. officials said. The White House said the executive order targeted people whose actions undermined democratic processes or institutions, had committed acts of violence or abuse of human rights, were involved in prohibiting or penalizing freedom of expression, or were government officials involved in public corruption. “Venezuelan officials past and present who violate the human rights of Venezuelan citizens and engage in acts of public corruption will not be welcome here, and we now have the tools to block their assets and their use of U.S. financial systems,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement. “We are deeply concerned by the Venezuelan government’s efforts to escalate intimidation of its political opponents. Venezuela’s problems cannot be solved by criminalizing dissent,” he added.

Pakistan has successfully test-fired a new indigenously-developed nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a range of 2,750 kilometers (1,708 miles). According to a statement released by the Pakistani Army’s Directorate of Inter-Services Public Relations, the Monday test launch of solid-fueled surface-to-surface Shaheen-III (Falcon-III) missile, with its impact point in the Arabian Sea, was “aimed at validating various design and technical parameters of the weapon system at maximum range.” Director General for Pakistan’s Strategic Plan Division Lieutenant General Zubair Mahmood Hayat hailed the missile launch as a major step toward upgrading the country’s deterrence capability. The test-fire comes less than a week after the first high-level talks between Islamabad and its arch-rival, New Delhi, in nearly a year. On January 31, India test-fired its longest-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile with the capacity to strike China and Europe.

Headline: Islamic State attacks Christian villages in northeast Syria
Islamic State militants strategically targeted Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria in a series of brutal attacks on Saturday, causing clashes with Kurdish militia in the area. Most of the fighting occurred on the northern banks of the river as ISIS attempted to capture Tal Talmr, a crossroad 35 km from the city of Hassakeh. By capturing the crossroad, ISIS would have a direct corridor to the eastern border of Iraq. The ISIS offensive in the town of Tal Tamr has advanced to numerous surrounding areas. Since they began the offensive in the region, they have gained control of over 10 villages near Tal Tamr. The city is 40 km south of the Turkish border and currently lies under Kurdish control. The attacks come just weeks after the Islamic State kidnapped 220 Assyrian Christians from nearby towns. In the time since the kidnappings, ISIS has released 23 Assyrian Christians.

As of late I have had people ask me about the rapture of the church. Before I give you a short section of when I believe the rapture of the church is going to take place let me say the following. As lovers of Christ Jesus it is our task to keep on the watch. You will read this command by Jesus Himself in the gospels where He tells us to keep on the watch. He wants us on the watch so the rapture doesn’t come upon us as a thief in the night. For those who say the rapture of the church will not come until the half way point in the tribulation why would these people be concerned if they knew they still had at least three and a half years before they had to worry about missing the rapture since the tribulation has even started yet?
Most people who hold to the midtribulation rapture try to deny the belief in an imminent return of [Jesus]. While it has been attempted to disprove the doctrine of imminence, Scripture consistently teaches that the coming of [Jesus] could be at any time. The bottom line is this. We need to live our lives as if Jesus were going to come back today for His church, that means being on the watch now not waiting for some major prophecy sign to be seen before you begin to get ready for the rapture. However, Jesus did leave us warning signs in prophecy to look for so that when we saw all these signs at once we would know for sure His second coming was very close at hand. Here in my ministry I am a watchmen for the Lord to help you see the things He warned us about concerning the last days. I will say this. Do not let your stand on the rapture hinder your walk between other Christians as we are suppose to be as Christ loving one another as Christ loves us. The rapture doctrine is not a doctrine of salvation but, it a very important part of prophecy for the last days. Be ready!
I will explain why I believe the church will already be in heaven during the Great Tribulation. First of all, you should understand that I believe in the Bible, the rapture takes place in Revelation 4:1. “After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.” The Greek words for “after these things” are meta tauta, meaning after the things of the church. You must understand that the book of Revelation is divided into three parts. Revelation 1:19 says, “Write the things which thou has seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter.” John wrote the things he had seen, the things that were going on while he was alive, and the things that would take place once the church was raptured to heaven in the future. The church is removed from Earth in Revelation 4:1. It is very interesting that you will never hear anything about the church again until chapter 19 when you see it riding back to Earth with Jesus at the end of the seven year tribulation. The reason the church isn’t mentioned is because I believe it was taken from the wrath of God to come. Also take careful notice what Jesus says to each of the 7 churches He gives the messages to which is found in Revelation chapters 2 and 3. At the end of each message He says, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what theSpiritsaith unto the churches” (Revelation 2:7a, 11a, 17a, 29, Revelation 3:6, 13, 22). After the church is raptured into heaven of which I believe is Revelation 4:1 where we see the tribulation is going on, Jesus now says, “If any man have an ear, let him hear” (Revelation 13:9). Unlike all the other times, this time Jesus left out the wordSpiritas in the phrase “hear what theSpiritsaith unto the churches.” Also take careful notice that Jesus used this same phrase 7 times in the gospels prior to theHoly Spiritdescending on the believers in the upper room on Pentecost. All 7 times it appears as follows as in Mark 4:9. “And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” I do not think the lack of the wordSpiritin the 7 verses is a coincidence! You can find these 7 verses in Matthew 11:15, Matthew 13:9, Mark 4:9, 23, Mark 7:16, Luke 8:8, and Luke 14:35. Here is the bottom line. Jesus did not say He that hath ears to hear, let him hear what the Spirit says in the gospels because He did not send the Holy Spirit to help them yet as He was still with them. However, once Christ left to go into heaven things changed.
The reason for the difference is the Holy Spirit was active in the church while the church was on the Earth, but now after Revelation 4:1 the Spirit has departed when the church was raptured to heaven. In Revelation chapter 13, the wrath of God is being poured out on an unbelieving world. Since the church is not appointed to wrath, as stated in Romans 5:9, and first Thessalonians 5:9 that is why the church has to be in heaven. In “the Revelation of Jesus Christ” which he was privileged to see, John tells of one scene of those who, before Christ’s second coming, had rejected the free offer of salvation through Christ yet realized that the time of the Antichrist had come; therefore, they had missed the opportunity to be part of the raptured church. Headline: EU diplomats warn of regional conflagration over Temple Mount
European Union diplomats stationed in Jerusalem and Ramallah are warning of regional conflagration over the Temple Mount. A March 18 internal report to Brussels raises caution around the changing status quo at the holy site and the growing tension triggered by the demands of right-wing Jewish groups. “There remains a significant risk that incidents at this highly sensitive site, or perceived threats to the status quo, may spark extreme reactions locally as well as across the Arab and Muslim world, and have the potential to derail the peace negotiations,” according to the report, which was obtained by Haaretz. The report also says that almost 100,000 East Jerusalem residents are in danger of losing their homes due to building restrictions Israel places on them. The EU delegates also sound the alarm about the idea of dividing the Temple Mount and allocating separate prayer times for each religion, as was done at Hebron’s Cave of the Patriarchs, known by Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque. The report contains an implicit criticism of the tendency by Muslim religious authorities and Palestinian politicians to deny the historic affiliation Jews have to the Temple Mount.

Two Palestinian Authority officials recently asserted that Islamic law forbids Jews from praying at the Western Wall of the Temple Mount, both adding that the wall was an integral part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. “Allah decreed that the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque is Islamic and belongs to Muslims alone,” Tayseer Al-Tamimi, former Chief Justice of PA Religious Court said last month, according to a translation newly provided by watchdog NGO Palestinian Media Watch. “It is part of the religious belief of a billion and a half Muslims, and the Jews have no right to it… or the right to pray in any part of it. The Al-Aqsa Mosque includes all its courtyards… and specifically, its western wall,” al Tamimi said Palestinian Authority Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash also stated last month that non-Muslims should be barred from praying at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which, according to him, includes the Western Wall. “The Al-Aqsa Mosque will remain, by divine decree, a Muslim mosque, will not be shared with anyone, will not be forfeited, and no one besides Muslims will pray in it,” he said.

A senior Palestinian Authority (PA) official announced Friday that Israel has told the PA it will not go through on the fourth and final batch of terrorist releases, which was set for Saturday night. “The Israeli government has informed us through the American mediator that it will not abide with its commitment to release the fourth batch of Palestinian prisoners scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 29,” PA official Jibril Rajoub told AFP. “Israel has refused to commit to the names that were agreed upon of prisoners held by Israel since before the 1993 Oslo agreements,” added Rajoub, calling the move a “slap in the face of the US administration and its efforts.” Rajoub reiterated PA threats to take unilateral moves for recognition at the UN next week, in breach of conditions of the peace talks, due to the release not occurring. “Not releasing the prisoners will mark the beginning of the efforts in the international community to challenge the legality of the occupation,” threatened the PA official.

Headline:Militants assassinate Lebanese soldier in Tripoli
Militants have shot dead a Lebanese soldier in the northern city of Tripoli, where spillover of ongoing conflict in Syria continues to takes more lives. Butrous Baya, a member of Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces, was killed on Friday when gunmen opened fire on his car. Baya was killed instantly with his vehicle plunging into the nearby Abu Ali River. The attack came a day after masked militants on a motorcycle gunned down an officer in central Tripoli. Two dozen people have been killed over the past week in clashes between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Tripoli, Lebanon’s second largest city. The fighting has pitted pro-Assad residents of Jabal Mohsen neighborhood against inhabitants of neighboring Bab al-Tabbaneh who support foreign-backed militants operating in Syria. The rival groups accuse each other of using the city as a base for transferring militants and weapons in and out of Syria.

Headline: Egypt police clash with anti-government protesters
Egyptian police have once again clashed with anti-government protesters in various cities across Egypt, following the announcement of Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s presidential nomination. Tens of anti-coup protesters were injured and arrested by security forces in the Sidi Bishr area of Egypt’s northern city of Alexandria on Friday. Police stationed themselves outside of mosques after Friday prayers when demonstrators began chanting slogans against Egyptian officials and the military-backed interim government. Additionally, in Cairo’s Maadi and Ain Shams neighborhoods, police fired tear gas at people marching against Sisi who recently announced his resignation as Egypt’s military chief to run for president. The anti-government demonstrators also criticized death sentences handed down to roughly 500 supporters of ousted president, Mohammed Morsi, and the Muslim Brotherhood in a case related to the killing of a single police officer in the Nile Valley city of Minya. Meanwhile, demonstrators have been holding rival rallies across cities in Egypt including Cairo, Alexandria and the Nile Delta city of Mansoura.

Headline: Regime fights back against rebel gains in Latakia
Government forces Thursday bombarded rebel positions with artillery and warplanes in the coastal province of Latakia, trying to push back opposition fighters who over the past week made gains in President Bashar Assad’s ancestral heartland. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 13 rebels, among them six non-Syrians, were killed in the strikes or in clashes in northern Latakia province, while 23 government troops and paramilitaries died in the fighting. Government troops have been battling for days with the rebels from several Islamist groups, including the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front, which launched the offensive in the province a week ago. They seized a number of towns, a border crossing with Turkey and – for the first time in the 3-year-old conflict – a tiny stretch of coast giving the rebels an outlet to the Mediterranean Sea. Separately, an official said Turkish artillery returned fire into Syrian territory after a shell from fighting in the neighboring country landed on a road near a Turkish border town. The governor’s office for Turkey’s Hatay province said no one was hurt by the shell, which was fired during fighting between Syrian regime and opposition forces over the predominantly Armenian town of Kasab. Attorney General Eric Holder said Friday that the federal government will recognize about 300 same-sex marriages performed in Michigan before a federal appeals court halted them, despite a decision by Michigan’s governor not to recognize those unions. The decision means federal benefits will be extended to those couples — including the ability to file taxes jointly, get Social Security benefits for spouses and request legal immigration status for partners. “These families will be eligible for all relevant federal benefits on the same terms as other same-sex marriages,” Holder said in a statement. The announcement Friday morning is Holder’s latest entry into the state-level same-sex marriage debate. Holder did the same thing in Utah, where more than 1,000 same-sex couples got married, before the Supreme Court put those unions on hold in January after a federal judge overturned the conservative state’s same-sex marriage ban in December.

At a hospital in Pittsburgh, surgeons are now allowed to place patients into a state of suspended animation. If a patient arrives with a traumatic injury, and attempts to restart their heart have failed — if they’re on the doorstep of death — they will have their blood replaced with a cold saline solution, which stops almost all cellular activity. At this point, the patient is clinically dead — but if the doctors can fix the injury within a few hours, they can be returned to life from suspended animation by replacing the saline with blood. Or at least, that’s the theory. The technique of suspended animation (or “emergency preservation and resuscitation” as non-sci-fi doctors prefer to call it) was first trialed on pigs in 2002. Hasan Alam, working with his colleagues at the University of Michigan Hospital, drugged up a pig, created a massive hemorrhage to simulate the effect of a massive gunshot wound, and then replaced its blood with a cold saline solution, cooling the pig’s cells to just 10 Celsius (50F). After the injury was treated, the pig was gradually warmed back up by replacing the saline with blood. Usually the pig’s heart started beating on its own, and despite the pig being dead for a few hours, there was no physical or cognitive impairment. Now, it’s time to try it out on humans.

The IRS, on its website, says such calls also sometimes threaten driver’s license revocation and sometimes are followed up with calls from people claiming to be police or the state motor vehicle department. The agency says some scam artists “spoof” or imitate the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make the call appear legitimate. Callers often demand payment through a preloaded debit card or wire transfer. Retired insurance agent Basant Kohli, 86, of South Hempstead, said he received a call of that nature March 9 from a man claiming to represent the IRS and saying Kohli owed $2,900.86 from 2006. “They said ‘If you don’t pay it, we’ll send the police to arrest you.’ ” Frightened, Kohli was about to send money, then suspected a scam. The discussion was part of an “emergency session” that the Arab League called on Tuesday, at the request of the Palestinian Authority (PA) envoy. The discussion came in response to Tuesday’s Knesset debate about extending Israeli sovereignty over the Temple Mount. According to Ma’an, the Arab League council called upon the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to spread awareness regarding the “dangers” threatening the compound in order to gain support for the complaint. The al-Qaida affiliate also is warning Lebanon’s Sunnis to stay out of the way when its fighters engage Hezbollah, a Shiite group affiliated with Iran, inside Lebanon. Hezbollah made the decision last year to send fighters into Syria to help keep the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in power. Assad, a Shiite Alawite, is allied with Iran and plays a role in part of what is referred to as the Shiite Crescent, stretching across Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Meantime, al-Nusra in Lebanon in a Twitter feed said that “any rational human being is aware of the injustice inflicted by Iran’s party on all the Lebanese and Syrian regions, especially in (the Syrian border towns of Qusair and Qalamoun.” “This wouldn’t have happened without Hezbollah men and equipment passing into Syria through the Lebanese border crossings under the eyes of the government and the Lebanese army which it controls,” the Twitter feed said. “Hezbollah is replacing its fighters daily in Syria through the army crossings. North Korea launched four short-range missiles into the East Sea — also known as the Sea of Japan — the South Korean Defense Ministry said Thursday. A Russian warship was docked in Havana Wednesday, without explanation from Communist Cuba or its state media. The Viktor Leonov CCB-175 boat, measuring 91.5 meters (300 feet) long and 14.5 meters wide, was docked at the port of Havana’s cruise ship area, near the Russian Orthodox Cathedral. The coverage extends to all insured city residents — including the roughly one-third of residents receiving Medicaid benefits — who are diagnosed by a doctor with the condition and for whom treatment is deemed medically necessary. “This action places the District at the forefront of advancing the rights of transgender individuals,” Mr. Gray said during an announcement at his ceremonial office at city hall. The move comes after city officials in March issued a bulletin notifying health insurers to remove language that discriminated on the basis of gender identity and expression from their policies in order to allow transgendered individuals to obtain medical benefits.

A federal judge on Thursday signed an order directing officials in Kentucky to immediately recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states and countries. U.S. District Judge John G. Heyburn II issued a final order throwing out part of the state’s ban on gay marriages. It makes official his Feb. 12 ruling that Kentucky’s ban on same-sex marriages treated “gay and lesbian persons differently in a way that demeans them.” Same-sex couples may change their names on official identifications and documents and obtain any other benefits of a married couple in Kentucky. The order doesn’t affect a related lawsuit seeking to force the state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The order came just hours after the Kentucky’s attorney general asked for a 90-day delay. The two-page filing says the delay is sought to give that office time to decide whether to appeal the Feb. 12 ruling and would give the state an opportunity to prepare to implement the order.

Christian leaders in the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, captured by an organization formerly affiliated with al-Qaeda, have signed a submission document this week banning them from practicing Christianity in public in return for protection by their Islamist rulers. The document, dated Sunday and disseminated through Islamist Twitter accounts, states that the Christian community in the province of Raqqa, captured last March by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), was recently given three options: to convert to Islam; to remain Christian but pledge submission to Islam; or to “face the sword.” They opted for the second of those choices, known as dhimmitude. Earlier this month, al-Qaeda’s central command distanced itself from ISIS, saying it was “not a branch of al-Qaeda.” The authenticity of the document, displaying the stamp of al-Qaeda, could not be independently verified. THREE people were injured after a gang of about 10 people attacked worshipers at a church in Bamburi’s Mwembe Legeza area in Mombasa yesterday morning. The gang had earlier unsuccessfully tried to attack four priests, five nuns and some church orderlies from Bride of the Lamb International Ministries, who live in a house adjacent to the church. One of those injured by the gang has been admitted at the Coast General Hospital where he is receiving treatment. The church and the priests’ residence are about 500 metres from Kisauni deputy county commissioner Tom Anjere’s office. The gang gained entry into the priests’ compound after they cut the iron sheet fence. They were however escaped after some men at the church raised the alarm. “They then fled to an adjacent church, the Tower of Faith Church, where four men were preparing to sleep just after the 12am prayers,” said Joseph Onyango, who is in charge of security at the priests’ house. The gang injured four men at the Tower of Faith Church in the head, hands, shoulders and leg. One of them hid behind a couch and was not seen. “We tried to fight them but they overpowered us. They switched off the lights so we could not see them. They were asking for our pastor, Jeremiah Muteti,” said Onesmus Makau, who was injured in the head and shoulders. Headline: Sun unleashes powerful X4.9 flare
Long-lived sunspot AR1967 returned to the Earthside of the sun on Feb. 25th and promptly erupted, producing an X4.9-class solar flare. This is the strongest flare of the year so far and one of the strongest of the current solar cycle. A movie from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the explosion hurling a loop of hot plasma away from the blast site: Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory tracked this material as it raced away from the sun, eventually forming a bright CME, pictured below. Radio emissions from shock waves at the leading edge of the CME suggest an expansion velocity near 2000 km/s or 4.4 million mph. If such a fast-moving cloud did strike Earth, the resulting geomagnetic storms could be severe. An interplanetary shock wave hit Earth’s magnetic field today at approximately 1645 UT (11:45 AM EST). This is the expected glancing blow from the CME produced by the X4.9-class solar flare of Feb. 25th.

A 6.1 earthquake shook the Alaska communities of Nikolski and Unalaska Wednesday, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center. The strong shake occurred around noon in the Bering Sea region of the state. The center says the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 and was located at a depth of 23 miles.

At least five people have been injured in clashes between Peruvian police and protesters in the southeastern tourist region of Cuzco. Hundreds of people joined two days of protests, which began on February 25, in the city of Cuzco against government plans to postpone construction projects in the city. Cuzco union official Wilfredo Alvarez said protest organizers demanded that the government of President Ollanta Humala fulfill its promises to build infrastructure projects such as a gas pipeline and an international airport in the city. Clashes, however, broke out on Wednesday, the second day of protests, after police fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, who were armed with sticks and rocks. According to local media, at least five people were injured during the clashes. A number of arrests were also made.

Venezuela’s opposition refused Wednesday to take part in talks that were called by the government in a bid to halt three weeks of protests that have left 14 dead. “We will not lend ourselves to a sham dialogue that would end in a mockery of our compatriots,” the opposition coalition MUD said in a letter to Vice President Jorge Arreaza. President Nicolas Maduro had called a “national peace conference” for later in the day, but so far only the country’s leading business federation and Venezuela’s Roman Catholic church have confirmed they would attend. The opposition’s main leader Henrique Capriles had earlier said he would not attend, dismissing the talks as a government photo op. An Islamist militant suicide bomber drove a car into a Mogadishu cafe frequented by members of the security forces on Thursday, killing at least 10 people and blowing the place to bits. Al Shabaab said it had carried out the attack, which followed an assault by its fighters on the president’s palace in the Somali capital last week. “Today’s blast was part of our operations in Mogadishu and we shall continue,” said Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s military operations spokesman. He said the attack had targeted security personnel who were sitting in the tea shop, killed 11 of them and wounded 15 others. Police said at least 10 people died at the tea shop, which is popular with security personnel as it is near their compound. “A bomber swerved his car bomb into a tea shop where national security men were sitting and blew up,” Police Colonel Abdikadir Hussein told Reuters. “The tea shop was completely destroyed.”

Moscow, meanwhile, has launched a massive military exercise involving 150,000 troops and put fighter jets on patrol along the border. Headline: Rabbis to Knesset: Extend sovereignty to Temple Mount
A group of rabbis and yeshiva heads have submitted a petition to the Knesset demanding legislation to extend Jewish sovereignty on the Temple Mount. Riots broke out again on Friday on the Temple Mount in response to growing tension on the issue. The petition comes ahead of Knesset deliberation on policies regarding the Temple Mount, due to begin in the middle of next week. The session will review a proposal by MK Moshe Feiglin (Likud) to place the entire Temple Mount under Israeli supervision. The discussion follows rioting earlier this month on the Temple Mount after Friday Muslim prayers, when rocks were thrown at police. The violence came a day after police closed the holy site to Jews to avert another riot, following numerous anonymous threats of violence from Arabs should any Jews ascend the mount. Jordanian ministers have expressed strong disapproval of any challenge to Jordan’s sovereignty over Jerusalem’s Muslim and Christian holy sites. The Jordanian parliament’s lower house even voted early in February to expel Israeli Ambassador Daniel Nevo and to recall the Jordanian Ambassador to Israel, Walid Obeidat. President Shimon Peres assured Jordan this month that Israel would honor its agreements with Jordan and ensure that all worshipers could pray in their holy sites.

Israel reserves the right to assess the Iranian situation and make the necessary decisions independently, Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz said Sunday after emerging from some five hours of talks with Wendy Sherman, Washington’s top Iran negotiator. “Israel reiterated and made clear its position that an agreement with Iran must include dismantling its ability to progress toward a nuclear weapon,” Steinitz said, using code for Israel’s long-standing position that the world needed to insist that Iran dismantle all it’s uranium enrichment capabilities. This position clashes with that of the world powers currently negotiating with Iran, which is now seemingly willing to allow Iran some enrichment capability. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made the same point publicly at the opening of the weekly cabinet meeting, saying he was concerned Iran believed it could “realize its plan to be a nuclear threshold state, with an enrichment capability that it thinks cannot be touched, and with the ability to develop both nuclear weapons and intercontinental missiles, which it is continuing to work on unhindered.” “This combination of enrichment, weapons and launch capabilities, means that Iran is, in effect, receiving everything and giving almost nothing,” he said. “That is the current situation.” Netanyahu said that the long-term agreement now being negotiated between the P5+1 (the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany) and Iran cannot be allowed to render permanent this current state of affairs. University campuses across North America and the UK kicked off “Israel Apartheid Week” (IAW) Monday, the tenth anniversary of the international protest against the Jewish state. The IAW is a major advocacy event of the BDS (Boycott, Sanctions, Divestment) movement, and offers seminars on what is termed the Israeli occupation of Palestine and Israel’s “racist” practices toward the Palestinian people. It also holds public demonstrations. According to IAW organizers, there has been “a sharp increase of literature and analysis that has sought to document and challenge Israeli apartheid, including reports issued by major international bodies and human rights organizations and findings published by political leaders, thinkers, academics, and activists.” The movement’s goals were outlined in 2005, stating that it wanted “full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, an end to the occupation and colonization of all Arab lands.” Many have claimed the week-long initiative — held in over 200 cities — aims to hurt Israel more than to help the Palestinian cause.

Israeli warplanes attacked targets on the border between Lebanon and Syria on Monday night, according to initial reports from Lebanon. The planes launched four air raids on the Janta area in the mountains separating the Lebanese village of Nabi Sheet from the Syrian border, according to the Daily Star newspaper. The Janta area is known to house a Hezbollah post, where recruitment and training are carried out. Janta is also a well-known route for arms smuggling between Lebanon and Syria, the source added. Eyewitnesses said plumes of smoke were seen rising from the area were the Israeli planes carried out the strikes. Earlier, al-Nashra news site reported that Israeli planes had launched two raids in the Bekaa Valley. This is a developing story. Meanwhile, Israeli military intelligence unit is expanding to combat the threat of jihadists in neighboring Syria, officials said. The expansion comes as Hezbollah is believed to be ramping up its military inventory in the event of a future confrontation with Israel, the Jerusalem Post reported. Hezbollah is said to have some 100,000 rockets and missiles stockpiled for use against Israel, including a small number of satellite-guided weapons that could be used to target specific outposts in the event of an all-out war between the two sides.

In advance of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s landmark visit to Israel Monday along with her entire cabinet, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared in an interview with ZDF (Second German Television) his support for US Secretary of State John Kerry’s efforts to reach an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Israel wants peace, security, stability and prosperity, Netanyahu said, and added he is up to the challenge. “If President Abbas of the Palestinian Authority is equally willing to pursue these goals, then I think Secretary Kerry’s initiative has a chance.” Netanyahu said that he was willing to recognize a Palestinian state but did not understand why the Palestinians were not prepared to recognize Israel as a Jewish state in return, Channel 10 reported. Netanyahu also emphasized that sitting down to talk was the only way to reach peace. Merkel and her cabinet were due to arrive in Israel Monday night for a high-profile visit that will include the largest bilateral government consultations in Israel’s history. However, the trip, which officially kicks off the preparations for next year’s celebration of 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, is being overshadowed by reports of the worst crisis in diplomatic ties since Merkel took office nearly 10 years ago. In Israel, she will hold talks with Netanyahu, with Israel’s divisive settlement policy on the agenda. The visit comes amid growing calls in Europe for a boycott against Israel over its settlements in the West Bank. Speaking with the PA-based Quds Press news agency, Dahbour said that the very debate regarding Israel as a Jewish state has dangerous consequences. He added that if Israel achieves international recognition as a Jewish state, such a move will bring the Palestinian Arabs to a point of no return and will result in the elimination of the so-called “right of return”, the expulsion of “Palestinian citizens of Israel” and any other non-Jewish residents of Israel, and in the bringing of the world’s Jews to Israel.

Activists say that Syrian military aircraft have struck a rebel-held town near Damascus, as government forces intensify efforts to subdue opposition-held communities around the capital. An activist who uses the name Mamoun Abu Saker says three strikes targeted homes in the town of Nashabiyeh on Monday. Abu Saker says at least four people were killed, and others are still buried under rubble. Iran has signed a deal to sell Iraq arms and ammunition worth $195 million, according to documents seen by Reuters – a move that would break a UN embargo on weapons sales by Tehran. The agreement was reached at the end of November, the documents showed, just weeks after Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki returned from Washington, where he lobbied the Obama administration for extra weapons to fight al-Qaida-linked militants. Some in Washington are nervous about providing sensitive US military equipment to a country they worry is becoming too close to Iran. Several Iraqi lawmakers said Maliki had made the deal because he was fed up with delays to US arms deliveries. A spokesman for the Iraqi prime minister would not confirm or deny the sale, but said such a deal would be understandable given Iraq’s current security troubles. “We are launching a war against terrorism and we want to win this war. At least three others were wounded by another bombing in the Hurriyah area of Baghdad. But more than a few eyebrows were raised when he recently sent a video message to Kenneth Copeland and his congregation. At the time that the video message was played to the congregation, one speaker declared that “Luther’s protest is over”… Meanwhile, Pope Francis has also been aggressively courting Muslims. The following quote from Pope Francis comes from remarks that he made during his very first ecumenical meeting… I then greet and cordially thank you all, dear friends belonging to other religious traditions; first of all the Muslims, who worship the one God, living and merciful, and call upon Him in prayer, and all of you. I really appreciate your presence: in it I see a tangible sign of the will to grow in mutual esteem and cooperation for the common good of humanity. The Catholic Church is aware of the importance of promoting friendship and respect between men and women of different religious traditions – I wish to repeat this: promoting friendship and respect between men and women of different religious traditions – it also attests the valuable work that the Pontifical Council for interreligious dialogue performs. Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) has laid out plans to reduce its U.S. balance sheet as the U.S. Federal Reserve adopts new rules to shield the country’s taxpayers from costly bailouts, the Financial Times reported on Sunday. The lender is expected to reduce its $400 billion balance sheet in the United States to around $300 billion in part by reassigning operations such as its Mexican arm and its Frankfurt and Tokyo-based repo businesses that are currently part of its U.S. business elsewhere, the FT reported. A Tu-154 electronic warfare aircraft of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force and a Y-12 utility aircraft of China’s State Oceanic Administration entered the Japanese air defense identification zone (ADIZ) simultaneously on Feb. 21, according to the state-run China News Service. The Japanese defense ministry first reported on Friday that a Chinese Tu-154 was detected near the border of its ADIZ while another aircraft, the Y-12, flew into the zone and was spotted 140 kilometers away from the disputed Diaoyutai islands (Senkaku to Japan, Diaoyu to China). The F-15J fighters of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force were scrambled to intercept the intruding aircraft, the ministry said. Observers say Tu-154 may have been deployed to the Diaoyutai region on a recon mission. Tensions remain high between the two nations since Japan, which controls the contested islands, nationalized three of the five islands through purchases from private owners in September 2012 — a move condemned by Beijing as an illegal appropriation of Chinese territory. Saudi health authorities announced on Sunday the death of an elderly woman from the MERS coronavirus, bringing the death toll from the respiratory disease in the kingdom to 61. The 81-year-old, who died from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in Riyadh, was suffering from several chronic illnesses, the health ministry website said. Saudi Arabia, the country worst hit by MERS, has recorded 147 cases, of which 61 have now proven fatal, since the virus first appeared in September 2012. Experts are struggling to understand the disease, for which there is no vaccine. MERS is considered a deadlier but less-transmissible cousin of the SARS virus that erupted in Asia in 2003 and infected 8,273 people, nine percent of whom died. The World Health Organisation says it has been told of 182 cases of MERS infection worldwide, including 79 deaths.

US doctors are warning of an emerging polio-like disease in California where up to 20 people have been infected. A meeting of the American Academy of Neurology heard that some patients had developed paralysis in all four limbs, which had not improved with treatment. The US is polio-free, but related viruses can also attack the nervous system leading to paralysis. Doctors say they do not expect an epidemic of the polio-like virus and that the infection remains rare. Polio is a dangerous and feared childhood infection. The virus rapidly invades the nervous system and causes paralysis in one in 200 cases. It can be fatal if it stops the lungs from working. Global vaccination programmes mean polio is endemic in just three countries – Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. There have been 20 suspected cases of the new infection, mostly in children, in the past 18 months, A detailed analysis of five cases showed enterovirus-68 – which is related to poliovirus – could be to blame. In those cases all the children had been vaccinated against polio. Symptoms have ranged from restricted movement in one limb to severe weakness in both legs and arms. Dr Emanuelle Waubant, a neurologist at the University of California, San Francisco, told the BBC: “There has been no obvious increase in the pace of new cases so we don’t think we’re about to experience an epidemic, that’s the good news. “But it’s bad news for individuals unlucky enough to develop symptoms which tend to be moderate to severe and don’t appear to improve too much despite reasonably aggressive treatment.”

China’s southern province of Guangdong reported one more death and four new human cases of H7N9 infection on Monday. A 46-year-old woman died in the city of Zhaoqing after treatment failed Sunday, the provincial health department said. Four new cases, two men and two women aged from 33 to 76, are all in critical condition. So far China has reported more than 120 human H7N9 cases this year, including at least 32 deaths.

Hundreds of pastors in Central Kenya confronted a county governor last week to protest against a new bill that could see clergy charged for preaching outside of their churches.The pastors, who say they represent as many as 1,200 churches within Nyeri County, marched to the governor’s office on February 12 to protest against the Nyeri County Finance Bill, which includes a section on charging preachers for speaking in public. The bill, which is yet to be debated by the local government or signed by the county governor, states that clergy must pay 10,000 Kenyan shillings (approximately $117) per day to preach inside a stadium, 8,000 KES ($93) outside a stadium and 5,000 ($58) in rural areas. Charles Muchiri, priest of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ruiru, near Nairobi, and chairman of the 300 pastors, said that churches should not be commercialised and treated like businesses, and that the bill would leave clergy dependent upon funds to reach beyond their churches. “The services rendered by the church to the people are free and such a high tax imposition will greatly affect the spreading of the gospel,” he said. In Kenya, it is common for churches to hold evangelical events in stadiums that can last from three days to a full week.

Headline: Seven Egyptian Christians found shot execution-style on Libyan beach
Libyan police have found seven Egyptian Christians shot dead on a beach in eastern Libya, security officials and local residents said on Monday, in the second such execution-style killing since the start of the year. A police officer told Reuters the bodies were found with gunshots to the head outside Benghazi in the east, where assassinations, kidnappings and car bombs are common and Islamist militants are active. “They were killed by headshots in execution style,” a police officer said. “We don’t know who killed them.” A local resident and an Egyptian worker, who asked not to be identified because of fears for their security, said unknown gunmen had arrived at the Egyptians’ Benghazi home and dragged them away the night before. Security sources confirmed the Egyptians were Christians. No further details were immediately available about how they were killed or whether they were shot on the beach. No group claimed responsibility.

Israel is facing the driest winter since 1927, Ma’ariv reports Monday, leaving experts concerned. The Kinneret (Sea of Galilee)’s water level has dropped by four centimeters since the rainy season began, compared to a 1.97 meter rise over the same five-month period in 2013. Israel has seen slight rain this month, but apparently it has not been making enough of an impact to change the drought situation. Israel’s Water Authority stated Monday that the water level in the Kinneret rose by only two centimeters from the beginning of the February, compared to February 2013, which saw a 37 centimeter increase. The rise appears to be an accumulation of previous rainfall though, since in February 2013 no rain fell in Israel at all. Officials stated that extra precautions are being made in the event that the drought continues.

Spanish astronomers say they have caught the “brightest impact” ever observed on the moon on video. The meteorite hit the lunar surface with the explosive power of 15 tons of TNT, and created a 40-meter wide crater. Jose Maria Madiedo, a professor at the University of Huelva, has released the video of the 400-kilo rock hitting the lunar surface. He filmed it on September 11 last year. According to the Spanish astronomy team’s calculations, the meteorite had a diameter between 60 centimeters and 1.40 meters, and hit the moon at around 61,000 kilometres per hour. Madiedo spotted a flash of light at 8:07 P.M. GMT. The light was briefly as bright as the northern hemisphere’s Pole Star. “With a duration of over 8 seconds, this is the brightest and longest confirmed impact flash ever recorded on the Moon,” according to details published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Headline: 4 killed during clashes in Central African Republic
At least two African UN peacekeepers and two gunmen have been killed following a fresh round of violence between soldiers and militia in the Central African Republic (CAR), an official says. Two African peacekeepers from Chad were killed on Sunday after a weekend of fighting with militiamen in the capital city of Bangui, said Martin Tumenta, head of military operations with the African-led International Support Mission to the Central African Republic (MISCA), on Monday. The top commander with the international force said the dead gunmen came from the mostly Christian militia known as the anti-Balaka group.

Two security guards were killed and more than a dozen people wounded on Monday in a suicide bombing outside the Iranian consulate in Peshawar in northwest Pakistan, police said. The attack was in an area housing offices of foreign diplomatic missions and non-governmental organizations in the sprawling city on the Afghan border. “It was a suicide blast. A man walked up to the checkpost outside the foreign mission after parking his car nearby. The man blew himself up when he was stopped by security men,” a local police officer told Reuters. The wounded were taken to hospital where the condition of five was serious. A spokesman for Pakistani jihadist Mast Gul, once acclaimed in Pakistan for his role fighting Indian rule in Kashmir, claimed responsibility. The group is affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban, who are fighting to topple the government.

Russia has lashed out at the new regime in Kiev, accusing it of using “dictatorial” and “terrorist” methods to suppress dissent in the country, with backing from the West which is “acting out of geopolitical self-interest.” “The position of some of our Western partners doesn’t show genuine concern, but a desire to act out of geopolitical self-interest,” said a statement on the Russian foreign ministry’s website. “There is no condemnation of criminal actions by extremists, including manifestations or neo-Nazism and anti-Semitism. In fact, these are being encouraged.”The statement went on to say that “outside sponsors” are advancing a “regime change” in the country, without a desire to find “national consensus.” “We urge those embroiled in the crisis in Ukraine to show responsibility, and to prevent further deterioration of the situation, to return to the rule of law, and to stop the extremists in their bid for power.” The Russian foreign ministry said “paramilitaries… refuse to leave the cities, or abandon the administrative buildings they have occupied, while they continue to carry out acts of violence”. It also censures them for mocking historical memorials. The statement says that the legitimacy of the Rada, which has passed dozens of laws for the past three days with a quorum of opposition deputies and defectors from Yanukovich’s Party of Regions, is “questionable”. Moscow accuses the Ukrainian MPs of using “revolutionary justifications” for calls to “virtually forbid the use of the Russian language entirely, encourage a lustration, liquidateparties, shut down certain media, and remove the limitations on Neo-Nazi propaganda”. Headline: 1000s hold anti-austerity demo in Madrid
Thousands of Spaniards have taken to the streets of the capital Madrid to protest against the government’s tough austerity measures. The protest took place on Sunday in the city where demonstrators chanted anti-austerity slogans. “I have come to protest against all the cuts this government is making in general, cuts to health, education and labour reforms. It’s leading us to higher unemployment and lower wages and more difficulties for people to cope with on a day to day basis,” said one protester. Grappling with a deep economic recession, Spain has adopted harsh austerity measures as part of attempts to deal with the dire situation. Spain has been witnessing daily protests in recent years since the country’s economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008, taking millions of jobs with it.

Thailand’s army chief says the military will not intervene with force in the country’s crisis, as the death toll from a blast in Bangkok rose to three. Thailand’s political crisis has become increasingly violent since mass protests began in November. On Sunday, an apparent grenade blast near an anti-government protest site killed a woman and a four-year-old boy. Doctors said on Monday that the little boy’s sister died later of brain injuries. Twenty-two people were hurt in Sunday’s blast, including a nine-year-old boy who is in intensive care. Sunday’s attack came hours after gunmen opened fire on an anti-government rally in eastern Thailand, killing a five-year-old girl. Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has condemned the attacks, describing them as “terrorist acts for political gain”.
