Headline: Italian lawmakers urge recognition of Palestinian state

Italian lawmakers on Friday backed a non-binding resolution that encourages the government to recognize Palestine as a state, a move that underlines European frustration over stalled Middle East peace negotiations. European countries have become increasingly critical of Israel, which since the collapse of the latest US-sponsored talks last April has pressed on with building settlements on territory the Palestinians want for their state. Italy’s Chamber of Deputies voted by 300 to 45 to pass the motion presented by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s Democratic Party (PD). While most developing countries recognize Palestine as a state, most Western European governments do not, supporting the Israeli and US position that an independent Palestinian state should emerge from negotiations with Israel. Friday’s symbolic vote does not change the position of the Italian government which, like other European countries, still supports a negotiated two-state solution.

Headline: Israel, Jordan sign Red–Dead canal agreement

Israel and Jordan agreed on Thursday to begin work on the Red Sea–Dead Sea Canal project, which will convey potable water to Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Environmental organizations object to the project and have proposed another plan, which they say would be more effective and less wasteful, such as conveying water to Jordan via the Jordan River. The project envisages bringing water from the Red Sea to stabilize the level of the Dead Sea and setting up a desalination facility in Aqaba, Jordan. The agreement signed by the two countries on Thursday provides for a joint administration to draft a tender and choose the contractors for the project. Officials said that construction of the desalination facility was expected to start in about 18 months, while the laying of the 180-kilometer pipe would begin in about three years.

Headline: Jordan, Egypt to intensify military cooperation

His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday held talks in Cairo with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi that focused on means to strengthen Jordanian-Egyptian relations and addressed the regional latest developments. During a one-on-one meeting, which was followed by a broader meeting, the two leaders commended the distinguished level of bilateral relations, drawing on a long history of ongoing cooperation and coordination, a Royal Court statement said. King Abdullah and Sisi stressed commitment to maintain consultations on issues of mutual concern in a manner that serves joint Arab action and the interests of the two countries. During the talks, the two sides agreed on intensifying military and security cooperation through forming a joint task force to draw up a framework to confront regional challenges. The King, who returned home later on Thursday after concluding the one-day visit, reaffirmed Jordan’s support for Egypt in a manner that reinforces its historic role in the Arab world and the Middle East. The Egyptian president expressed his appreciation of Jordan’s stance, which attests to the Kingdom’s continued support of its “Arab brethren” and all efforts that unify their ranks and serve their just causes.

Headline:   Lebanese army combat Syrian militants near Baalbek

The Lebanese army says it has seized two hilltop positions along the border from Syria-based Islamic militants. In a statement Thursday, it says the operation is in line with efforts to secure villages near the eastern border with neighboring Syria. Three soldiers were wounded in the operation, during which militant positions were shelled with artillery and heavy weaponry, it added. The statement did not name the militants, but most are believed to be from the Islamic State group. They and the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front have been holding around 20 Lebanese soldiers and policemen hostage since August.

Headline:   Dozens of suspected militants killed in Egypt’s North Sinai: sources

One person was killed and five others including policemen were wounded when five bombs exploded in Cairo on Thursday, security sources said. A bomb exploded outside a restaurant in the residential district of Imbaba, killing one and wounding two, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. Three policemen were wounded when another device went off near a police station in the poor district of Alwaraq near Imbaba, security sources said. Three other bombs exploded in the nearby mainly middle-class district of Mohandeseen, the interior ministry said. They caused limited damage to mobile phone shops, but no injuries. Most of the worst in a campaign of bomb attacks in Egypt have hit the Sinai peninsula, a remote but strategic region bordering Gaza, Israel and the Suez Canal. But smaller blasts have become increasingly common in Cairo and other cities.

Syria Headline:   Car bomb kills 11 outside Damascus: activists

Eleven people were killed on Friday in a car bomb blast in a rebel-held area outside the Syrian capital, while seven people died in regime air raids, an activist group monitoring the war said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the toll from the bomb blast, which occurred near a mosque in the town of Dmeir, was expected to rise because of the number of people seriously wounded. The Britain-based activist group said a woman and a child were among those killed in the government airstrikes on the Marj region elsewhere in Eastern Ghouta, a key rebel bastion outside Damascus.

Iraq Headline: Bombings, mortar fire kill 10 people in Iraq

A series of bombings and mortar strikes in and near the Iraqi capital killed 10 people on Friday as Baghdad police discovered six bodies with gunshot wounds, officials said. In the capital’s southern district of Dora, mortar shells killed two people inside their homes early in the morning, and wounded four others. Bombs also targeted market places Friday, usually a shopping day for many Iraqis. In Baghdad’s western Sadiyah neighborhood, a bomb blast near a wholesale vegetable market killed three people. Another bomb went off near an outdoor market in the Sabaa al-Bour area, just north of Baghdad, killing three people and wounding eight. Shortly after sunset, a bomb blast at a commercial street killed two people and wounded five in Baghdad’s southeastern district of New Baghdad, police said. Medical officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to journalists.

Iraq Headline: UNESCO demands emergency Security Council session over Iraq artifacts

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council in the wake of the mass destruction of rare ancient artifacts by ISIL Takfiri terrorists in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. “This attack is far more than a cultural tragedy – this is also a security issue as it fuels sectarianism, violent extremism and conflict in Iraq. This stands in direct violation to the most recent United Nations Security Council Resolution 2199 that condemns the destruction of cultural heritage and adopts legally-binding measures to counter illicit trafficking of antiquities and cultural objects from Iraq and Syria,” UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova stated on Thursday. “This is why I have immediately seized the president of the Security Council to ask him to convene an emergency meeting of the Security Council on the protection of Iraq’s cultural heritage as an integral element for the country’s security,” she added.

Kurdish Headline: Kurds Capture Part of Key ISIS Stronghold

Kurdish fighters seized the eastern and southern outskirts Friday of a key Islamic State (ISIS) stronghold in Syria’s northeastern Hasakeh province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said. Fighters from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) had entered Tal Hamis and captured parts of the town after six days of clashes with the jihadists, the Britain-based group said. The town is northeast of the provincial capital, Hasakeh city, and has been under ISIS control for more than a year. Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said the town was “one of the most important strongholds” of the group in the region. The Kurdish advance comes after days of fighting in which YPG forces have taken some 103 villages and hamlets in the area. Since the clashes began Saturday, at least 175 ISIS fighters have been killed by the Kurds and air strikes by a the US-led coalition. Additionally, 30 fighters from the YPG and Syrian Arab rebel units fighting alongside them have been killed. Among the dead was an Australian, the first Westerner to die in a Kurdish unit in Syria. The Pentagon said the coalition had carried out several air strikes in Hasakeh province Thursday, including three near Hasakeh city and three near Tal Hamis.

Headline: FBI Director: ISIS Tentacles Reach into All 50 U.S. States

The presence of the Islamic State (ISIS, ISIL) in the United States can be felt in all 50 states, according to the director of the FBI. FBI Director James Comey told the National Association of Attorneys General that ISIS is a “chaotic spider web” that avidly uses social media to radicalize people across the United States. “We have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all 50 states,” said Comey, adding, “This isn’t a New York phenomenon or a Washington phenomenon. This is all 50 states and in ways that are very hard to see.” He made those comments as the FBI arrested three men in Brooklyn, New York for attempting to provide support to ISIS. Comey said his agency is investigating suspected ISIS supporters who reside in all 50 states. “Those people exist in every state. I have homegrown violent extremist investigations in every single state. Until a few weeks ago there was 49 states. Alaska had none which I couldn’t quite figure out. But Alaska has now joined the group so we have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all 50 states,” Comey said.

Headline: ISIS: Pro-Palestinians in Europe Actually Sleeper ISIS Cells

Pro-Palestinian rallies and groups are being used to aid the rise of Islamic State (ISIS) in Europe, according to a book the group released this month – united under the front of “bringing down Zionsim.” The book, Black Flags from Rome, encourages European Muslims to rise up and aid ISIS from within, according to a report on the PJ Media website – and notes that terror cells have already been formed. “There were small armies of the Islamic State within every country of Europe by late 2014, and the intelligence agencies didn’t even know about it!” the book exclaims. “If you have ever been at a pro-Palestine / anti-Israel protest, you will see many activists who are not even Muslims who are supportive of what Muslims are calling for (the fall of Zionism),” it continues. “It is most likely here that connections between Muslims and Left-wing activists will be made, and a portion from them will realize that protests are not effective, and that armed combat is the alternative.” Such “recruits” being lured to ISIS due to frustration over their lives “will give intelligence, share weapons and do undercover work for the Muslims to pave the way for the conquest of Rome,” the book also predicts.

Headline:   2014 Was Deadliest Year for Terror Attacks in 45 Years

Terrorist attacks and resulting deaths increased sharply last year, according to statistics made public Thursday by the director of national intelligence. “When the final counting is done, 2014 will have been the most lethal year for global terrorism in the 45 years such data has been compiled,” DNI Director James Clapper told Congress, adding that about half of all attacks took place in three states: Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Last year from January to September, around 13,000 terror attacks were carried out, killing 31,000 people. By contrast, in 2013, 22,000 people were killed in terrorist violence in over 11,500 attacks, Clapper disclosed during a wide-ranging world threat briefing before the Senate Armed Services Committee. More than 3,400 foreign jihadists have joined the al Qaeda offshoot known as the Islamic State (IS) that is showing signs of establishing its own nation state, Clapper said. The DNI also testified that IS (also known as ISIL or ISIS) is expanding outside Iraq and Syria into the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and South Asia. The group also is planning terror attacks on Western interests and against Shiite Muslims, he said.

Headline: Deaths shake Ukraine truce; Poroshenko wary of Russian threat

Ukraine on Friday reported the first deaths in three days in east Ukraine and President Petro Poroshenko said Russia would pose a “military threat” even if a ceasefire holds. Government troops fighting pro-Russian separatists in the east began towing artillery away from the front line on Thursday, a sign the truce meant to begin on Feb. 15 could at last be taking effect. But Kiev’s military later announced the deaths of three servicemen in the past 24 hours, following two days with none. “Even under the most optimistic scenario … the military threat from the east would unfortunately remain,” Poroshenko said in a televised speech, in a clear reference to Russia. Kiev and Western governments have accused Russia of sending troops and weapons to support the separatists in east Ukraine, despite a peace deal agreed in the Belarussian capital Minsk on Feb. 12. Moscow has denied this.

The Afghan Taliban claimed credit for executing today’s suicide attack in Kabul that struck a convoy transporting NATO’s top diplomat to Afghanistan. A Turkish soldier and an Afghan civilian were killed in the blast. The Taliban suicide bomber rammed his car into the NATO convoy as it traveled in the Wazir Akbar Khan area, a neighborhood in the Afghan capital which hosts foreign embassies, a NATO base, and other sensitive installations. The attack took place “shortly after 8:00 am, not far from the Iranian embassy,” a senior Afghan interior ministry official told Ariana News. Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, NATO’s new command in the country, confirmed that one “service member died as a result of an attack in Kabul today.” But “the NATO Senior Civilian Representative,” who previously was Turkey’s ambassador to Afghanistan, “was not involved and is unharmed.”

Headline:  Libya Warns of more Air Strikes with Egypt against IS

Libya’s internationally recognized Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni said his government would stop dealing with Turkey as it was sending weapons to a rival group in Tripoli so “the Libyan people kill each other”, ramping up his rhetoric against Ankara. Two administrations, one in the capital and Thinni’s in the east, have been vying for power since an armed group called Libya Dawn seized Tripoli in July and reinstated lawmakers from a previous assembly, four years after Muammar Gaddafi’s ousting. “Turkey is a state that is not dealing honestly with us. It’s exporting weapons to us so the Libyan people kill each other,” he told Egyptian TV channel CBC late on Thursday. A spokesman for Turkey’s foreign ministry strongly denied Thinni’s allegations. “Instead of repeating the same baseless and untrue allegations we advise them to support U.N. efforts for political dialogue,” spokesman Tanju Bilgic told Reuters. “Our policy vis-a-vis Libya is very clear. We are against any external intervention in Libya and we fully support the ongoing political dialogue process under U.N. mediation.”

Headline:   Libya chaos likely to affect Tunisian security, experts say

Headline:   Tunisia to get 8 Black Hawks for fight against militants

Tunisia will be most affected if the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) continues to expand in Libya, Tunisian terrorism experts say. “Libya is a ticking bomb,” former Brigadier-General Mohammed Sellami told Al Arabiya News. “Not dealing with terrorism in Libya is likely to shake security in Tunisia, and even the Maghreb region in the long run.” Last week, an ISIS-style video was released that purported to show the beheading of 21 Egyptian Copts, prompting hundreds of Egyptians residing in Libya to flee to Tunisia. “One of ISIS’s strategies is expansion. It has already threatened to go to Tunisia on multiple occasions,” said political analyst Noureddine Mbarki. “The terrorist threat is the most serious danger facing Tunisia right now.” Tunisia has been dealing with its own insurgency since the 2011 revolution that toppled President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. Last week, around 20 militants from the Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade opened fire at a police checkpoint, killing four officers. The brigade operates in Mount Chaambi near the Algerian border, and was responsible for killing 14 soldiers with rocket-propelled grenades in July 2014. Tunisia is also dealing with a hard-line Salafist movement called Ansar al-Shariah, which was formed in 2011 and later officially declared a terrorist group.

Headline: Fighting ISIS ‘Not a High Priority for Turkey’

Turkey does not place a high priority on fighting Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists and as a result foreign fighters are able to travel through the country into Syria, United States intelligence chief James Clapper said Thursday, according to AFP. Asked if he was optimistic that Turkey would take a more active role in the war against ISIS, Clapper told senators: “No, I’m not.” “I think Turkey has other priorities and other interests,” he was quoted as having told the Senate Armed Services Committee. The Turkish government was more concerned with Kurdish opposition and the country’s economy, the director of national intelligence said. “Public opinion polls show in Turkey they don’t see ISIL as a primary threat,” said Clapper, using an alternative acronym for the group. The effect of Turkey’s approach was to allow a “permissive” climate for foreign recruits heading to Syria to take arms for ISIS, he said. “And of course, the consequence of that is a permissive environment… because of their laws and the ability of people to travel through Turkey en route to Syria,” Clapper said. “So somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 percent of those foreign fighters find their way to Syria through Turkey.”

Headline: Bomb blast targets motor park in northeast Nigeria, kills 18

A bomb blast in the northeastern Nigerian town of Biu has claimed the lives of at least 18 people. According to Babagana Kyari, a civilian vigilante, on Thursday, “at least 18 people, including three women, died… and several others were injured” when a bomber targeted the Tashar Gandu motor park in Biu, Borno State. Another bomber was gunned down before detonating his explosives in the town, said Ali Dauda, a local resident who witnessed the incident. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, the Nigerian government blames such attacks on the Boko Haram Takfiri group, which has recently intensified its acts of terror in the northeast of the African country. The attack came two days after a bomb blast targeted a bus station in the city of Kano, leaving 34 people dead.

A mortar attack on the Somali presidential palace in the capital, Mogadishu, has claimed the life of a security guard. “At least four rounds of mortar shells struck the parking area and a guard was killed in the attack,” said Abdurrahman Mohamed, a Somali security official, on Thursday. Reports said the offensive targeted the residential area where the country’s president, prime minister and parliament speaker live. “Shrapnel destroyed the windows of several cars in the parking area, and I saw one person who was lightly injured,” Mohamud Hassan, a witness, stated. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the incident, but the Somali government blames attacks of that type on al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group. Last week, the al-Shabab militants launched an attack against a hotel in Mogadishu, killing more than two dozen people including the city’s deputy mayor, Iman Icar. Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed Omar Arte and Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Hussein Ishaq were injured.

Gunmen ambushed a military truck during a night-time attack in a southern province, officials said, killing all four soldiers in the vehicle, in a raid claimed by Yemen’s Al Qaida branch. Yemeni security officials said the attackers surprised the soldiers late on Thursday with heavy gunfire while patrolling a street in Houta, a town in the southern Lahj province. They could not identify the attackers. The SITE intelligence group, which monitors militant online postings, quoted Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula as claiming responsibility in a statement posted on militant Twitter accounts. The militants said they set fire to the truck after they seized the soldiers’ machineguns. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media. The province has seen increased activity by Al Qaida militants and Shiite Al Houthi rebels, both of which oppose the government.

Headline: Anti-government clashes in Greece as bailout extended

Greek protesters have turned against the government for the first time since the far-left Syriza party came to power, just as the country is getting a four-month extension of its bailout, which would have expired Saturday (28 February). Some 450 people took to the streets of Athens on Thursday to voice their anger at the government, with pockets of people hurling stones and petrol bombs at police and burning cars after the march was over. Even if small in scale when compared to the massive anti-austerity protests seen in Athens in the past five years, the Thursday incidents were the first manifestation of anger at the government led by Alexis Tsipras, who was elected on a promise to end austerity and cancel some of Greece’s debt. But after three weeks of negotiations with his eurozone peers, Tsipras had to abandon most of the campaign pledges and accept a four-month extension of the bailout complete with a strict reforms plan.

Headline: Bangladesh activists protest against US blogger’s murder

A U.S. blogger in Bangladesh known for his prominent stance against religious fundamentalism was hacked to death by unidentified attackers in the country’s capital Thursday night, police said. Avijit Roy and his wife Rafida Ahmed were attacked late Thursday night in Dhaka as they were returning from a book fair at Dhaka University. Ahmed was seriously hurt in the attack. Roy’s family said he was a prominent voice against religious fanatics and had received threats in the past. It is still unclear who was behind the attack. The local police chief, Sirajul Islam, told The Associated Press that the assailants used cleavers to attack Roy and his wife, who is also a blogger. “Several attackers took part in the attack and at least two assailants hit them directly,” Islam said, adding that two blood-stained cleavers were found after the attack. Roy founded a popular blog called Free Mind, which artiles on scientific reasoning and religious extremism were featured. The blog was written in Bengali. Roy’s brother Anujit said the Bangladesh-born U.S. citizen had returned to Bangladesh earlier this month from the U.S. Similar attacks have taken place in Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation of 160 million people but ruled by secular laws, in the past. Investigators have said religious fanatics were behind those attacks.

Headline: Thousands protest in Maldives, calling for president to quit

Thousands came by boat to the capital of the Maldives to protest on Friday against the arrest of former president Mohamed Nasheed and demand that current leader Abdulla Yameen resign. Tensions have escalated on the cluster of tropical islands off India’s southwestern tip since Nasheed was arrested last weekend on charges of terrorism relating to an incident when, as president, he ordered the arrest of a judge. Nasheed, who was thrown to the ground as police dragged him to court on Monday, has said he was forced to resign at gunpoint over the judicial row in 2012, and allies say he was ousted in a coup. Supporters of Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Jumhooree Party, which has broken away from Yameen’s ruling coalition, converged by boat from across the nation of 1,190 islands after a call to rally in Male. A reporter at the scene estimated the crowd at between 8,000 and 10,000 people. The entire population of the Maldives, a popular destination for sun-seeking tourists, is less than 400,000. Protesters waved green-and-red national flags and chanted a song whose words included a call to “stand in defense of the constitution”.

Headline: Filipino rebels kill 5 soldiers, injure 6

Five Filipino soldiers have been killed and six others injured in an ambush by communist rebels in the northern Ilocos Sur Province of the East Asian state, army officials say. The troops were returning to their headquarters in a convoy late Thursday when the New People’s Army guerrillas went on a shooting spree in Quirino township, 285 kilometers south of the Philippine’s capital, Manila, Captain Mark Anthony Ruelos of the 7th Infantry Division said on Friday. Armed forces spokesman, Colonel Restituto Padilla, said the troops fought back but their counterattacks remained futile because the rebels used civilians as human shields. The army officials said the guerrillas also opened fire on medical staff who were trying to retrieve the bodies of dead soldiers. Padilla said the rebels violated international law by using civilians as human shield.

Headline:   Weekly Jobless Claims Rise

The number of Americans seeking first-time unemployment benefits rose last week, a sign the labor market may have lost some steam after last month’s solid job growth. Initial jobless claims rose by 31,000 to a seasonally adjusted 313,000 in the week ended Feb. 21, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected 290,000 new claims. Jobless claims are a measure of layoffs across the economy and have been hovering near levels last seen during the mid-2000s economic expansion. The weekly figure is notoriously volatile, especially around holidays; last week included Presidents Day. The longer-term trend suggests a tightening market as employers gain confidence and respond to higher demand.

Headline:   Saudis’ Oil Price War Is Paying Off

Three months after Saudi Arabia made clear it was going to let oil prices keep tumbling, the strategy is showing signs of working. U.S. drillers are idling rigs at a record pace, gutting investment plans and laying off thousands of workers. The number of rigs drilling for oil in the U.S. dropped by 37 last week to 1,019, the fewest since July 2011, data from Baker Hughes Inc. showed Feb. 20. Since Dec. 5, a total of 556 have been taken out of service. Oil explorers including Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Chevron Corp. have announced spending cuts of almost $50 billion since Nov. 1. Transocean Ltd., the world’s largest offshore driller, had its credit rating cut to junk Feb. 25 by Moody’s Investor Service on concern the company will increase debt levels while the drilling market deteriorates. It has about $9 billion of borrowings. U.S. oil production will cease its month-on-month growth in April because of the drop in the rig count, Marios Maratheftis, the Dubai-based global head of research for Standard Chartered Plc, said in Dubai on Feb. 23. Oil has rebounded 13 percent in New York since Jan. 29, following a drop of more than 50 percent since June, in part because of the decline in drilling, which signaled supply growth will slow.

Headline: HIV outbreak tied to painkiller, dirty needles

A quickly spreading outbreak of HIV in Southeastern Indiana is being linked to injection of the powerful painkiller Opana — raising concern among health officials across the region and nation as they face an epidemic of prescription drug abuse. Indiana state health officials said Wednesday that they have confirmed 26 cases, and four more preliminary cases, since mid-December, most linked to Opana injection and a few spread through sexual transmission. The cases were in Scott, Clark, Washington, Jackson and Perry counties, and officials said this is the largest HIV outbreak the state has ever experienced in one region.

Headline: Leprosy cases on rise in Florida

Three people have been diagnosed with leprosy in Volusia County over the last five months, two of whom got the disease after coming into contact with armadillos, health officials said. Officials said three cases is an unusually high number for a rare disease.  Typically, about 150 to 250 new cases of the bacterial disease are reported nationwide each year, with fewer than 10 in Florida, according to health officials. Eighteen cases of leprosy were reported in Brevard County over the last five years, including eight in 2014. Health officials said some of the Brevard cases were also linked to contact with armadillos, but it’s not known exactly how the animals were involved in each case. One case in Orange County was reported to the state last year.

Headline: Saudi reports 10 MERS deaths in a week

Ten more people in Saudi Arabia have died from MERS over the past week, health ministry figures showed Friday, after an international mission urged extra measures to combat the virus. Saudi Arabia is the country worst-hit by Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The latest deaths occurred between February 20 and 26, adding to a surge of cases which has killed 27 people since the start of the month. Doctor Abdul Aziz bin Saeed, who heads the centre coordinating the ministry’s response to MERS, warned in early February that a rise in cases typically occurs around this time of year, when there are more juvenile camels circulating.

Headline: Death toll of swine flu rises to 965 in India

The death toll from H1N1 virus or swing flu this year has risen to 965 in India, said Indian Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda Friday. A total of 965 people died due to swine flu this season but there is no need to panic as there is no shortage of free drugs to treat the patients at hospitals and clinics across the country, he said at the Lok Sabha or Lower House of Parliament. “We had made arrangements for doctors, medicines, testing facilities, isolation wards in November with the active support of the state governments,” he said. According to the minister, while swine flu symptoms like mild fever and cough are common, people should take immediately the medicines once the disease is suspected without waiting for the test results.

Headline:   ISIS now holds 262 Christians hostages in Syria

ISIS has seized even more Assyrian Christian hostages after taking over nearly a dozen Assyrian villages in northeastern Syria in the past few days, an activist said Thursday. The Sunni extremist group now holds 262 Assyrians captive, said Osama Edward, founder of the Assyrian Human Rights Network. “ISIS is taking over more and more Assyrian towns,” he said. The number has climbed steadily, from an initial estimate of between 70 and 100 people seized on Monday to 150 as of Wednesday, with women, children and the elderly among them. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the number of Assyrian hostages seized over three days at 220, in a statement released Thursday. They were taken from 11 villages in the Tal Tamer area in al-Hasakah Province, the monitoring group said. Its information indicates that ISIS has taken them to the Mount Abdelaziz area, southwest of Tal Tamer. Edward, who is based in Sweden but has family in the area attacked by the terror group, said Wednesday his information was coming from the Assyrian Human Rights Network’s team on the ground.

Headline:   Ransom demand drops for American missionary; gangs, not Boko Haram suspected

Nigerian kidnappers holding an American missionary reportedly slashed their ransom demand in half Thursday, in yet another sign that they are most likely a small time criminal gang and not the feared Islamist group Boko Haram. The Rev. Phyllis Sortor, of Seattle, was kidnapped Monday from the Hope Academy compound in Kogi State, in the central region of Nigeria by armed men who demanded a ransom of $300,000 from local authorities for her safe return. That demand was slashed in half according to local reports on Thursday in Nigeria down to about $150,000. While the ransom demands are high, it’s a paltry amount for a militant extremist group such as Boko Haram according to experts on the region who spoke to FoxNews.com. “That’s not big money if you are a trans-national jihadist,” Mark Schroeder, vice president of Africa Analysis for global intelligence at the global intelligence firm Stratfor, told FoxNews.com. “It could be some local gang desperate for cash. Or presidential elections are coming up and this could have been a quick way for a group to extort money basically for rigging an election.”

Note from FrankIn Revelation 9:21 we see Jesus speaking to us about drug’s. The words “sorceries” in Revelation 9:21 is the Greek word pharmakia from which comes our word “pharmacy”. It signifies the use of medicine, drugs, spells, such as those used in witchcraft and those used today by those who are seeking a greater “high”. This generation was to be labeled a drug generation and we are.

Headline:   Washington DC legalises marijuana possession and use

Washington DC has become the latest place in the United States to legalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. As of midnight on Thursday (05:00 GMT), people who use the drug in private no longer face prosecution. The change has created tension between the city’s mayor and Congress. Washington DC joins Alaska, Colorado, and Washington state as the only places in the US that allow the use of the drug for recreational purposes. Residents and visitors to the city over the age of 21 can possess as much as 2oz (56g) of cannabis, and may grow a few plants at home. Buying and selling the drug remains illegal, as does smoking it in public. The plan was overwhelmingly agreed in a referendum last November.

Headline:  Black hole 12bn times more massive than sun is discovered

A monster black hole powering “the brightest lighthouse in the distant universe” has been discovered that is 12bn times more massive than the sun, scientists have revealed. The extraordinary object is at the centre of a quasar – an intensely powerful galactic radiation source – with a million billion times the sun’s energy output. For years the nature of quasars, discovered in 1963, remained a mystery. Today scientists believe they are generated by matter heating up as it is dragged into supermassive black holes at the centre of distant galaxies. The new object, named SDSS J0100+2802, is 12.8bn light years from Earth and was formed just 900m years after the Big Bang that gave birth to the universe. Astronomers cannot explain how such an enormous black hole could have formed so early in cosmic history, soon after the first stars and galaxies emerged. Dr Fuyan Bian, from the Australian National University, a member of the international team, said: “Forming such a large black hole so quickly is hard to interpret with current theories …
