Headline:  Report: Iran Support for Hamas Rekindled

Iran has resumed transferring funds to Hamas, a senior defense source told Walla! News Sunday, after nearly two years of estrangement between the two terror regimes. The transfers resumed shortly after Operation Protective Edge in Gaza ended in August, the source said. The sources were unable to elaborate on the exact monetary amount transferred to Gaza, but he said it was “significant” – and that Iran is also actively pledging support for terror groups along Israel’s southern border to keep fighting against the Jewish state. Moreover, Iranian money will help Hamas arm itself with more advanced weaponry, after much of their arsenal was destroyed during Protective Edge and due to Egypt’s war on terror in the Sinai significantly hindering Hamas’s arms supply. Hamas’s other arms suppliers are tiring of the group, he added, noting “even Sudan is not as much of a main waystation as it used to be.” The senior defense official said that the organization’s “military wing,” the Al-Qassam Brigades, is back to making its own rockets, and also has increased the rate of “test launches” into the Mediterranean Sea.

Headline: Hamas trains 17,000 young ‘cadets’ to ‘liberate the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’

Hamas has completed a massive military training course of teenagers, some as young as 15. Hamas said it conducted a military training course for 17,000 youngsters in the Gaza Strip. The Islamic movement, which despite a formal transfer to the Palestinian Authority continues to control the Gaza Strip, said the cadets, ages 15 to 21, were instructed in firearms, combat skills and infiltration of neighboring Israel.“The number of cadets exceeded expectations,” Hamas said. In a statement on Jan. 27, Hamas said the training course, titled “Pioneers of Resistance,” was conducted at the Izzedin Kassem military training compound near Gaza City. The cadets underwent a graduation ceremony at the complex attended by former Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh. The training course came amid Hamas’ efforts to recover from the 50-day war with Israel in mid-2014. Hamas and its Palestinian militia allies were said to have intensified recruitment and training in an effort to prepare for another war with the Jewish state. On Jan. 26, Hamas and Islamic Jihad were said to have launched at least 10 rockets from the Gaza Strip into the Mediterranean Sea. The launches were said to mark tests of new medium- and long-range rockets.

Headline: Hamas Official: Egypt’s Decision a ‘Coup Against History’

A senior Hamas official on Sunday slammed a decision by an Egyptian court to brand Hamas’s “military wing” a terrorist organization. Meanwhile, the group’s spokesman toned down Hamas’s initial response to the move, in which it said that Hamas no longer viewed Egypt as a mediator between the group and Israel. Mousa Abu Marzouk said that the Egyptian ruling against the Al-Qassam Brigades “is a coup against the history, ethics of Egypt and its principles,” reported the Alresalah news website. “History recorded the Qassam Brigades has always been civilized in dealing with Egyptian intelligence … Is it today a terrorist organization?” Abu Marzouk reportedly wrote on Facebook. “In a move, the first of its kind, Cairo Court for Urgent Matters, considers the Qassam Brigades as a terrorist organization; for the first time in the Arab and Muslim world, alongside with most countries in the world except for Israel and its supporters in the West, the Palestinian resistance has been condemned,” he continued. Abu Marzouk further said he considered the ruling “a coup against the history, the rights of the Palestinian, Egypt and its principles that we know.”

Headline: Jordan renews prisoner swap offer after ISIL beheading

Jordan renewed its offer Sunday to exchange an al-Qaeda prisoner for a fighter pilot held hostage by the Islamic State, as outrage and grief gripped Japan after the militant group released a video that purports to show the beheading of hostage Kenji Goto. Jordan remains “as committed as ever” to the U.S.-led military coalition fighting the Islamic State, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said. Japan braced for possible future attacks by tightening security at airports and Japanese facilities abroad, including embassies and schools. The country, until now, had not been directly embroiled in the battle against the extremists. “I feel indignation over this immoral and heinous act of terrorism,” Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said. In a phone call with Abe, Jordan’s King Abdullah II condemned the killing as a “criminal act.” And leaders from around the world, including President Obama, shared their sorrow over the death of Goto, 47, a journalist.

Headline: Jordan reinstating envoy after recall over Temple Mount tensions

Jordan announced on Monday that its ambassador to Israel would return to his post in Tel Aviv, three months after he was recalled over “violations” at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. “We have asked Ambassador Walid Obeidat to return to Tel Aviv,” government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani told AFP. Jordan recalled Obeidat on November 5 after police clashed with stone-throwing Palestinians inside the flashpoint site, also known as the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, with Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh describing Israeli actions as “violations” and “way beyond the limits.” The recall reportedly came after reports surfaced that Israeli police had entered the al-Aqsa Mosque on the compound and clashed with protesters inside the building. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the development and called it “an important step that reflects Israel’s and Jordan’s joint interests, chief among them stability, security and peace.” It was not immediately clear when Obeidat would return.

Headline: Lebanon Army border shelling contains Syria jihadis

The Lebanese Army is pushing ahead with preemptive strikes, shelling the outskirts of the northeastern Bekaa Valley area of Ras Baalbek to prevent any attack by Islamist militants deployed on the border with Syria, a security source said Monday. The source told The Daily Star artillerymen maintained a daily pattern of pounding the area of Wadi Rafeq on the outer edge of Ras Baalbek with 120mm and 155mm projectiles for about 10-15 minutes every few hours in anticipation of any infiltration attempt by ISIS or Nusra Front jihadis. Wadi Rafeq is less than three kilometers south of Ras Baalbek, whose outskirts saw deadly battles between the Lebanese Army and militants who tried to overrun a military post in nearby Tallet al-Hamra last month. The Army is also pounding militant hideouts in areas linking the outskirts of Ras Baalbek to the outskirts of the nearby town of Al-Qaa. The Syria-based militants, believed to be affiliated to ISIS, launched a surprise attack on an Army post in Tallet al-Hamra, a hill overlooking Wadi Rafeq, in an early morning attack on Jan. 23, prompting clashes that endured for over 16 hours. The militants briefly overran the post, but the Army regained control after it received reinforcements.

Saudi-ArabiaSaudi Arabia

Headline: More Western Defense Workers Targeted in Saudi Arabia

Two American defense contractors were targeted by gunfire last Friday in Saudi Arabia, according to their employer, Vinnell Arabia, a firm which provides training for the Saudi National Guard. It’s the second time in recent months the contractor’s workers have been targeted, according to the AFP news agency. Saudi Arabia is in transition at the present time, with a new monarch, King Salman, having taken over for his late half-brother, King Abdullah, who died a week ago. Salman is also not likely to rule for very long, inasmuch as he is already ill himself; he has already named his youngest half-brother Muqrin as Crown Prince to follow him, as advised by the late monarch. “We can confirm… they were shot by assailants in the al-Ahsa province of Saudi Arabia,” the company said Monday in a statement via its public relations firm. “Both employees were injured but are in stable condition at a local hospital.” Saudi police reportedly claimed that only one employee was wounded in the shooting, which took place just wast of a National Guard base near Hofuf city, in the east, near Saudi Arabia’s oil fields. Several rounds were fired at the Vinnell vehicle from a white car, a source close to the incident told AFP. The employee driving the vehicle was hit several times. His passenger took over driving and raced to the hospital. An American defense subcontractor for the Israel-based Elbit Systems firm died under mysterious circumstances in the kingdom on January 15 of this year as well. Saudi authorities are still trying to untangle the cause of death in that case, and have not yet released the body to the family of the victim. Not counting that death in January, this is the fourth attack on Westerners in the kingdom since October 2014, when the U.S. began its coalition air strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Headline:  ‘Three women killed’ in clashes in Egypt’s Sinai

Two women were killed by a rocket-propelled grenade while another died in crossfire between militants and security forces in two separate incidents in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, security and medical sources said on Sunday. Security sources blamed the violence on Sinai Province, Egypt’s most active militant network and the same group that claimed attacks on Thursday that killed at least 30 security personnel in the worst anti-government violence in months. In Rafah, along the border with the Palestinian Gaza Strip, militants launched a rocket-propelled grenade at a military checkpoint, but hit a house instead, killing two women, security and medical sources said. The wayward RPG also wounded two other women and two children, the sources said. In another incident in Rafah, a woman was killed by a stray bullet during a firefight between militants and security forces, while two others were wounded, security sources said. A man was also wounded after security forces shot at him at a checkpoint in provincial capital Al-Arish for violating a curfew that has been in place since the last major attacks in October, the sources said.

Syria Headline:    Syrian al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front claims Damascus bus bombing killing at least six

A bomb ripped through a bus carrying Lebanese Shiite pilgrims in Damascus Sunday, killing at least six people and wounding up to 20, in an attack linked to the ongoing war between Hezbollah and Islamist militants who have vowed to punish the party for its involvement in the Syrian war. The cause of the rare attack that rocked a central district of the Syrian capital was unclear. While a Twitter account associated with the Nusra Front, Syria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for the blast, saying a Saudi member of the group identified as Abu al-Ezz al-Ansari blew himself up inside the bus, Syrian media and the trip’s organizers said the blast was caused by an explosive device. Syria’s state news agency SANA said the “terrorist bombing” involved 5 kilograms of explosives placed in the front of the bus and that authorities had defused a second device inside a bag which was found on the floor of the vehicle.

Syria Headline:    Government warplanes kill over 40 across Syria

Syrian warplanes struck several rebel-held areas across the country on Monday, killing over 40 people, activists said. Air raids on the village of Jassem in the southern Daraa province killed at least 12 people and wounded 25, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Daraa-based opposition activist Ahmad al-Masalmeh said 14 were killed in the air raids, including four children and two women. The village has seen near-daily air strikes and fighting between government forces and rebels. Rebels have been on the offensive and captured a major military base late last month. The Observatory, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, said other strikes hit villages in the northern province of Idlib, in the northern city of Aleppo, and in the town of Douma near Damascus. It said that in some raids government forces used crude bombs hurled out of helicopters. Other local organizations also reported the strikes, but gave different death tolls. Conflicting tolls are common in the chaotic aftermath of violent events. Also on Monday, activists said a pro-government group known as the National Resistance Movement shot dead a man after accusing him of spying for Israel.

Iraq Headline: Islamic State seizes oil facility in north Iraq, 15 workers missing

Iraq Headline: Kurdish forces free oil workers at Kirkuk crude station: officials

Islamic State insurgents on Saturday seized a small crude oil station near the northern Iraqi city Kirkuk where 15 employees were working, and explosions in and around the capital Baghdad killed at least nine people. Two officials from the state-run North Oil Co confirmed the militants seized a crude oil separation unit in Khabbaz and said 15 oil workers were missing after the company lost contact with them. “We received a call from one of the workers saying dozens of Daesh fighters were surrounding the facility and asking workers to leave the premises. We lost contact and now the workers might be taken hostage,” an engineer from the North Oil Co told Reuters, using a derogatory acronym for Islamic State.
The radical jihadist movement seized at least four small oilfields when it overran large areas of northern Iraq last summer, and began selling crude oil and gasoline to finance their operations. Further south in Baghdad, two bombs in a central neighborhood and a farming district south of the capital killed at least seven civilians on Saturday, medics and police said.
Two soldiers were killed when a bomb exploded close to an army patrol near Taji, a predominantly Sunni Muslim rural district north of Baghdad. At least 24 others were wounded in the explosions.

Iraq Headline: Islamic State Exports 100 tankers of Crude Oil Daily

The Hamrin oil fields  located in southern Kirkuk province in northern Iraq, are considered to be a vital financial source for Islamic State (IS), which produces and exports 100 tankers of crude oil every day. But the Iraqi government and coalition partners have not taken any serious steps to prevent them. Hamrin, in the south of Kirkuk province, is one of the richest oil fields in Iraq. The US has previously warned that IS is using oil as a major source of funds. An Iraqi army officer, who declined to be identified, told BasNews that IS militants have taken control of the oil fields. He said, “They export and sell crude oil through local traders. They use the road from Hawija to Mosul and then to Syria”. The officer added,“They sell one barrel for just $10. But the Iraqi Government has not taken any proper steps to stop them, and coalition airstrikes are not preventing them so far”. IS has had control of about 33 oil fields in Hamrin since last year.

Kurdish Headline: Islamic State to Form Kurdish Battalion

The Islamic State (IS) has established a battalion of Kurdish pro-Baathists and is preparing them to conduct offensives against the Peshmerga forces of Kurdistan. A Kurdish Peshmerga commander says, “They will do whatever they can to take a Kurdish city, but they cannot achieve this aim.” With the formation of a Kurdish battalion IS aims to deliver its message and terrorize the people of the Kurdistan Region and will appoint a Kurdish Emir. Commander Jamal Muhammed told BasNews, “As Peshmerga forces have taken control of the strategically vital Kaske junction which connects Iraq and Syria, IS militants are attacking in an attempt to regain control of the road.” “IS uses its pro-Baathist Kurdish members as propaganda to fight the Peshmerga.” Muhammed added.

Headline:   Obama acknowledges ISIS has American hostage, says US ‘deploying all assets’ to find her

President Obama, in an interview aired Monday, acknowledged that the Islamic State has at least one U.S. hostage and said his administration is “deploying all assets” to find her. The president made the comments in an interview with NBC’s “Today” show. Obama spoke briefly on the hostage situation, going back-and-forth between referring specifically to a particular female hostage and hostages in general. “We’re deploying all assets that we can, working with all the coalition allies that we can to identify their locations,” Obama said. “We’re in very close contact with her family, trying to keep them updated. Obviously, this is a something that is heartbreaking for families. And our obligation is to do anything we can to make sure an American citizen is rescued from this situation.” The Islamic State already has executed three American hostages. But the Obama administration made clear a week ago that the extremist group, also known as ISIS, has one or more U.S. hostages. White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough suggested during a Jan. 25 interview on ABC News that the Islamic State had more Americans, referring to “our hostages.” He also apparently slipped and revealed the first name of the woman held by ISIS. Obama spoke after ISIS released a video showing the execution of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto (the 2nd Japanese hostage to be excuted).

Headline:   Islamist State plots terror attacks inside Tehran. Hezbollah high-up killed in Damascus bus blast

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has launched a new terror offensive against Iranians, their followers and other Shiites.  It was kicked off Sunday, Feb. 2 with an attack on a Damascus bus carrying Lebanese Shiite pilgrims to shrines in Syria. Nine people were killed and at least 20 injured. ISIS has set its sights next on the Muslim Shiite heartland, Iran and its cities – especially the capital Tehran. The Damascus bus attack is ascribed by some sources to a Saudi suicide bomber by the name of Abu al-Ezz al-Ansari. The claim that the Syrian rebel Jabhat al-Nusra was the perpetrator was false, say debkafile’s intelligence and counter-terrorism sources. This group does not go in for Saudi recruits and certainly not suicide bombers of that ilk. ISIS fingered Nusra to conceal its own responsibility for the attack and its real target. Our sources reveal that the Islamic State attacked the Shiite pilgrims in order to get at a high-ranking officer of Hizballah’s armed wing, who was on the bus. Hizballah headquarters in Beirut has imposed deep hush on his death and identity. But because they could not pretend the bus explosion did not happen, they pinned it Monday on “takfir [infidel] groups” which they say collaborate with Israel. Conscious of the Islamic State’s next plans, the Iranian Al Qods Brigades commander, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, paid an unscheduled visit to Beirut last Thursday, Jan. 29, for urgent talks with Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah and briefings for the organization’s military council members. Their most pressing concern was the detailed ISIS program, which is ready to go, for a broad new campaign of terror against Iranian and pro-Iranian targets in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and the Iranian homeland.

Headline: Rebels pound Ukrainian troops after peace talks fail

Pro-Russian separatist leader Alexander Zakharchenko says rebels aim to boost their forces to 100,000, as fighting with Ukraine’s military intensifies. The rebels want to push government forces out of the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk and are trying to capture the key town of Debaltseve. Dozens of people including civilians were killed in clashes and artillery fire at the weekend. Mr Zakharchenko, the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, said mobilisation was “urgent” and that the call-up would take place in the next 10 days. “This is to increase our army to 100,000 people,” he said. “It does not mean we will take in 100,000, but the joint army of Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics’ army should be 100,000.” However, the rebels’ ability to raise large numbers of forces is unclear.

Headline: Obama has agreed to 80 percent of Iran’s demands in nuclear talks, Israeli officials tell Ch. 10

Israeli officials told Channel 10 on Friday that they are convinced the Obama administration has already agreed to most of Iran’s demands in the P5+1 negotiations over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. According to unnamed officials, Washington “has given the Iranians 80 percent of what they want” out of the negotiations, Channel 10 is reporting.
Jerusalem officials appear alarmed at the prospect that the United States will soon strike a deal with the Iranian regime that will leave it with a “breakout point” of months before it can gallop toward the bomb. An Obama administration official dismissed the claims in the Channel 10 report as “complete nonsense.” The practical significance of the American compromises in the talks is that Iran will be permitted to keep over 7,000 centrifuges, enough for the Iranians to produce enough enriched material to sprint toward the bomb within a matter of months.
These developments have apparently fueled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s sense of urgency in traveling to Washington and addressing Congress in hopes of lobbying American lawmakers to pass tougher sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Headline: Syrian rebels say holding Iranian fighter, seeking swap

A mainstream Syrian rebel group said on Monday they were seeking to swap an Iranian taken captive in the southwestern province of Deraa last month for women held in Syrian government jails. Iran, a Shiite Muslim ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has sent mainly military experts to help him in his almost four-year-long battle with mostly Sunni Muslim rebels. Last month several insurgent groups including the Sham Unified Front launched a major offensive in the province of Deraa in which they seized several military posts including a strategic army base in the Sheikh Maskeen area. The group’s leader Abu Ahmad said his rebels captured the Iranian as he was fighting alongside government forces in the province, and killed nine other soldiers as they took over a power station near Sheikh Maskeen in the province. “We questioned him through a translator, he came to Syria last year, he is a 30-year-old and he comes from (the Iranian) city of Qom,” Abu Ahmad, who was not using his real name, told Reuters. “We are questioning him on how Iranians operate in Syria. Our priority right now is a swap (of him) for our prisoners. We have so many women in government prisons and we want to swap him for (some) them.” Reuters could not independently verify the account.

Officials claim 3 foreign insurgents killed by an Afghan military air strike  in Badakhshan province. The dead are said to include a Tajik and a Chechen. This is the first I have heard of Afghan forces using air power. The article does not say what type of aircraft was used.

The three DoD contractors killed earlier this week are identified as employees of Praetorian Standard, of North Carolina. They were Walter D. Fisher of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Jason D. Landphair of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and Mathew E. Fineran of Summerville, South Carolina.

Protests continue in Kabul against Charlie Hebdo and 24 people are injured, including 17 police injured by thrown rocks and 7 injured protesters, apparently by police gunfire.

Eight cabinet ministers and the chief of the National Directorate of Security will be sworn in. However, 9 additional cabinet nominees have yet to be confirmed.

The Taliban claim to have captured IS leader Mullah Abdul-Rauf Kazim and 45 followers in Helmand province.

Meanwhile, it is reported that many Taliban fighters are going over to IS. According to this report, the motive is not so much greater ideological affinity as it is frustration over the Taliban’s failure to establish governance over substantial territory.

Headline:    South Sudan’s warring sides agree fresh ceasefire deal

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and rebel commander Riek Machar signed another ceasefire agreement on Monday, edging them closer to a final deal to end a 15-month conflict that has ravaged the world’s newest country, mediators said. African diplomatic sources said the agreement, which has not been made public, sets out how the two leaders would share power once they formed an interim government. It is proposed Kiir would remain president while Machar would become vice president. After four days of intense negotiations, the warring sides also agreed to abide by a ceasefire deal which was signed in January 2014 but is frequently violated. The rebels, however, said many more details need to be ironed out before the deal can be labelled a “power-sharing” agreement. The government and rebels have previously signed at least three peace deals which were broken quickly.

Headline:  Militants claim to set up ‘police force’, court for Libya’s Benghazi

A car bomb exploded Monday near the Tripoli headquarters of a Libya militia which controls the capital, killing one person and wounding two others, a security source said. The attack targeted the Tripoli Revolutionaries Brigade militia which occupies a former security building near the center of the capital, said the source. The militia is headed by Haitham al-Tajuri, a controversial interior ministry official, the source added. The bombing came almost a week after a daring attack claimed by ISIS against a luxury Tripoli hotel that killed nine people, including five foreigners. The Islamist-backed Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) coalition seized control of Tripoli in August after fierce battles against rival groups. Meanwhile, Some 1,000 kilometres east of the capital, militants just outside Benghazi claimed to have established their own court system and police force. Ansar al-Sharia, a group nominally allied to Islamic State, circulated images purporting to show a long line of identical silver 4x4s on patrol in suburbs just outside the city. Other photos claimed to show a line of black pick-up trucks mounted with flashing lights and emblazoned with the slogan “Islamic police”. Announcing the establishment of the force via their Twitter page, Ansar al-Sharia said the cars had patrolled the suburbs of al-Qawarisha and al-Hawari some 15 kilometres east of central Benghazi, to “secure the areas and establish [Islamic law] within them”.

Headline:   Survey: 20 pct of Turkish public approves of use of violence in name of Islam

A full 20 percent of the Turkish public approves of the use of violence in the name of Islam, though a majority of the public does not approve, a survey conducted in January by the Ankara-based MetroPOLL Strategic and Social Research Center has revealed. When asked whether they would approve of the use of violence in the name of Islam in some cases, 73.6 percent of the respondents said they would not, while 20.1 percent said they would and 6.3 percent said they have no idea or did not answer. The survey, titled “Pulse of Turkey, ‘Religion, Violence and Freedom’,” was conducted between Jan. 17 and 20 in 26 provinces among 2,759 people in the form of face-to-face interviews. The pollsters said that although approximately 74 percent of the people voiced their disapproval of the use of violence in the name of Islam, it is alarming that 20 percent, which is one fifth of Turkish society, actually approve of the use of violence in some cases. Contrasting the results with the results of a similar survey in September 2014, which revealed that the number of people who approved of the use of violence in some cases was 13 percent while those who disapproved of violence was 83 percent, the pollsters said the growing support in society for the use of violence is an unsettling development.

Headline: Nigerian President Escapes Blast by Minutes

The Nigerian army says it has repelled an assault by Boko Haram Islamist militants on the strategic north-eastern city of Maiduguri. Defence Ministry spokesman Chris Olukolade is quoted as saying the attack was “contained” and the rebels suffered heavy casualties. The militants attacked in the early hours of Sunday, and gunfire was reported on the streets of the city. Brig Gen Olukolade was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying that “the terrorists incurred massive casualties” on Sunday. “The situation is calm as the mopping up operation in the affected area is ongoing,” he added. A number of eyewitnesses confirmed the army claim. Meanwhile, A bomb exploded outside a stadium in northern Nigeria on Monday, just minutes after President Goodluck Jonathan left a campaign rally at the site. There was no claim of responsibility for the blast in the town of Gombe, but suspicion is likely to fall on Boko Haram militants who have attacked the area several times.  On Sunday, a suicide attack in the town killed five people. Workers collected bodies from the streets of Maiduguri on Monday, a day after the Nigerian army repelled an attempt by Boko Haram militants to take control of the city.

Headline: Yemen’s main parties suspend talks with Shiite rebels

Headline: 10 killed in 4 days of clashes in Yemen

U.N.-brokered talks aimed at resolving Yemen’s political crisis appeared to be falling apart Monday as the main political parties suspended their participation in negotiations with the Shiite rebels who control the capital. The talks are centered on finding a framework for national consensus after embattled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi submitted his resignation along with his Cabinet on Jan. 22. A senior Yemeni politician said the main political parties had demanded that the parliament convene in order to consider Hadi’s resignation and to take the lead in a post-Hadi transition period. According to Yemen’s constitution, in the event of the president’s resignation the parliament speaker would assume the post until new elections can be held. The Houthis reject the legitimacy of the parliament, and issued a three-day-ultimatum, starting Sunday, for rival parties to come up with an alternative plan, saying that if they failed to do so the rebels would completely take over the government. The Yemeni politician spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press. The rebels have also demanded that their fighters be integrated into Yemen’s army and police force as a precondition for talks, according to Abdullah Noaman, the leader of the Nasserite Party, which pulled out of the talks a day earlier. He said the Houthis demanded that their 20,000-strong militia join the country’s security forces as a precondition for any deal. He accused the Houthis of using the talks as “political cover to complete their coup.”

Headline: Rocket attack kills 2 policemen in SW Pakistan

At least two policemen have been killed after a rocket struck a motorcade of a senior police officer and his family in Pakistan’s violence-plagued southwestern province of Balochistan. Local authorities said on Sunday that the incident took place as district police chief, Asghar Ali Yusufzai, was travelling with his family from Khuzdar district to the port city of Gwadar, located more than 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) southwest of the capital, Islamabad, on Saturday evening. “The vehicle carrying Yusufzai and his family came under rocket attack as they passed Pasni town,” said Balochistan Home Secretary Akbar Durrani. The senior police officer and his family escaped the assault unscathed. Meanwhile, a military officer was killed and two others seriously wounded on Sunday after a powerful explosion ripped through their vehicle. The officers were on routine patrol, when their car ran over a buried explosive device in Nasirabad district of Balochistan Province. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the acts of terror, through, the deadly attacks bear the hallmarks of similar assaults by pro-Taliban militants.

Headline: Mass anti-austerity protest in Madrid

At least 100,000 people took to the streets of Madrid on Saturday (31 January) to show support for anti-establishment party Podemos, one week after Greek voters almost gave Syriza, a party with similar objectives, an absolute majority. The electoral victory for Syriza, which Podemos regards as its “sister party”, boosted the mood in the Spanish movement. “The wind of change has started to blow in Europe”, Podemos’ leader Pablo Iglesias told the crowd, referring to Syriza’s win. Greek flags could be seen on tv images of the protest, alongside banners with the Spanish word for ‘change’ and Podemos, which means ‘we can’. “Today we dream of making our dream reality in 2015. This year we begin something new, this year is the year of change and we will win the elections from PP”, saidIglesias, according to Spanish media. Spain will have national elections by 20 December 2015.

Headline: Thousands march for democracy in Hong Kong

Thousands of pro-democracy protesters took to the streets of Hong Kong Sunday (Feb 1) for the first time since mass demonstrations shut down parts of the city for more than two months. A sea of yellow umbrellas – the symbol of the campaign – moved slowly through central Hong Kong with crowds shouting for “true universal suffrage”. Organisers had said the rally would draw 50,000 people. An AFP reporter estimated that several thousand had joined the march by mid-afternoon but no police estimate was available. Police warned that attempts to reoccupy main roads cleared of tented protest camps in December are likely. But no protest group has announced it intends to relaunch the occupation, and the march began peacefully Sunday afternoon with many carrying yellow balloons. The rally will gauge the public’s willingness to keep fighting for free leadership elections. Authorities have made no concessions to activists’ demands and tensions remain high in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. “We just want to express our frustration with the government in Hong Kong,” said protester Ronnie Chan, who is in his 40s and works in sales and marketing. “We understand there is very little we can do, but if we do not speak out nothing will change.” Officials in December cleared protest camps which had blocked several main roads. Rallies drew around 100,000 at their peak and saw intermittent violent clashes with police.

Headline: Haiti protesters clash with police over oil prices

Protesters clashed with each other and police in the Haitian capital Monday amid demonstrations against high oil prices that saw three people wounded by gunfire. Police patrols opened fire and threw tear gas to disperse knots of young people blocking roads with large rocks and tree branches. “We demand that oil prices drop by 100 gourdes (about $2) per liter),” union leader Anderson Desroches told reporters. The new Haitian government announced a slight decrease of 15 gourdes ($0.32) per liter of gas and 10 gourdes ($0.21) on kerosene, which the unions deemed insufficient. Numerous violent incidents took place during the protests. At least three people were wounded by gunshots in a neighborhood south of the capital during clashes between protesting youths and police. Protesters smashed car windows with stones in the center of Port-au-Prince, where youths blocked major roads to force drivers to a standstill. Automatic weapons fire was heard around the capital. A public transport strike disrupted the operations of government offices, businesses and schools. Transport unions called for a two day strike to demand lower oil prices in the wake of lower fares on the international market.

Headline:  U.S. companies face billions in Venezuela currency losses, Reuters analysis shows

At least 40 major U.S. companies have substantial exposure to Venezuela’s deepening economic crisis, and could collectively be forced to take billions of dollars of write downs, a Reuters analysis shows. The companies, all members of the S&P 500, and including some of the biggest names in Corporate America such as autos giant General Motors <GM.N> and drug maker Merck & Co Inc <MRK.N>, together carry at least $11 billion of monetary assets in the Venezuelan currency, the bolivar, on their books. The problem is that the dollar value of the assets as disclosed in many of the companies’ accounts is based on either the rates at 6.3 or 12 and only a limited number of transactions are allowed at those rates. The assets would be worth a lot fewer dollars at the 50 rate in the government system and the dollar value would almost be wiped out at the black market rate. The currency system is also about to be shaken up following an announcement by Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro on Jan. 21, leading to fears of a further devaluation. American companies will also have additional exposure to the bolivar that isn’t disclosed because they don’t see the size of that exposure as material to their results. The Reuters analysis also doesn’t look at the thousands of publicly traded and private American companies that aren’t in the S&P 500 and will in some cases have bolivar assets.

Headline: DF-21D ballistic missiles deployed to Guangdong: Kanwa

To stop US carrier groups from entering South China Sea waters, the Second Artillery Corps, China’s strategic missile force, has recently deployed DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missiles to the southern province of Guangdong, according to the Canada-based Kanwa Defense Review. The expansion of the Second Artillery Corps unit in Guangdong began in 2010, according to a report from the Pentagon. It has nine parking lots for the mobile launchers and an additional 13 lots for other vehicles. The facilities apparently also contain a training field, office building and checkpost, according to a satellite photo. With an attack range of 2,700 kilometers, the DF-21D can be used to form a blockade against the United States and allies in the Western Pacific. Those missiles would very likely be used against a US carrier battle group in the disputed southern seas and the Taiwan Strait. Similar missile systems of the Second Artillery Corps have been deployed to other bases around China.

Headline:  CDC warns of ‘large outbreak’ of measles

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Tom Frieden on Sunday warned that the U.S. could see a “large outbreak” of measles. “We are very concerned by the growing number of people who are susceptible to measles, and the possibility that we could have a large outbreak in this country as a result,” Frieden said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” There are at least 102 reported cases in 14 states, according to the CDC. Frieden said that the U.S. is “likely to see more cases.” Frieden said there is “aggressive public health action” to identify those with measles, isolate those sick and quarantine those who have been exposed. But he said the best way to prevent the spread of measles was vaccination. Frieden said despite the U.S.’s 92 percent vaccination rate, there is growing evidence more parents are not vaccinating their children. “What we’ve seen is, as over the last few years, a small but growing number of people, have not been vaccinated. That number is building up among young adults in society, and that makes us vulnerable,” he said. Frieden acknowledged that some parents are concerned about the safety of vaccines, or think measles no longer exists. “One in six kids could have a fever ten days after, but the vaccine is safe and effective. And for those parents that may think that measles is gone, it’s still here, and it can be quite serious,” he said.

Headline:  ICE: Transgender Illegals Guaranteed ‘Right to Hormone Therapy’ in Detention

An official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement testified Friday during a discussion on immigration detention facilities, hosted by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, that transgender individuals are guaranteed “a right to hormone therapy.” “With respect to treatment while in detention–the medical care standard–the standards guarantees a right to hormone therapy for individuals who need it for treatment, and even in facilities that are not covered by that standard. Our ICE House Service Corps is very vigilant on that issue to ensuring that individuals receive necessary hormone therapy,” said Kevin Landy, assistant director of the ICE office of detention policy and planning. According to Commission Chairman Martin Castro, the Department of Homeland Security is the “largest agency that has custody of transgender individuals.” As CNSNews.com previously reported, the 2011 Operations Manual ICE Performance-Based National Detention Standards – ICE’s operations manual for its detention facilities – offers guidelines for transgender illegal immigrants who have been receiving hormone therapy before they are apprehended. “Transgender detainees who were already receiving hormone therapy when taken into ICE custody shall have continued access,” the report said. “All transgender detainees shall have access to mental health care, and other transgender-related health care and medication based on medical need. Treatment shall follow accepted guidelines regarding medically necessary transition-related care.”

Headline: San Francisco experiences driest January on record

For the first time in recorded weather history, San Francisco received no measurable rain in January. The city’s streets stayed dry, and the month ended on Saturday with sunshine and the temperature hitting 70 degrees. The rest of the Bay Area was also dry. Meteorology consultant Jan Null tells the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1yqjBbf) that other cities, including San Jose, saw at most two one-hundredths of an inch of rain. The Bay Area is still above normal rainfall totals for this time of year after a wet December. But rain will have to start falling soon to maintain a normal pace. The state, meanwhile, remains in the grips of a drought. San Francisco’s recorded weather history dates back to the Gold Rush era of the mid-19th century.
