Headline: Israel chief rabbi urges rebuilding Jerusalem temple
The Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, David Lau, said he would like to see the Jewish temple rebuilt on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. To build it, there was no need to remove any of the Muslim shrines on the Temple Mount, where there was plenty of room for “Jews, Christians, Muslims, everyone,” he told the Knesset Channel on Tuesday. “I can’t tell you exactly what was in the temple, but the truth is that when you see the prophets, the writings, the sayings of the sages, you understand that whoever went there came back full of inspiration, emotion, joy and satisfaction, so I yearn for those days,” he added. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to maintain the status quo that prohibits Jewish prayer at the site, and has ordered members of Knesset not to approach the Mount, a move contested by Jewish zealots bent to building a third temple.

The IDF has announced it will deploy hundreds more troops to Judea and Samaria following last night’s deadly terror attack on Tel Aviv’s Sarona Market, which left four people dead and over a dozen wounded at a cafe. “In accordance with situation assessments, the Judea and Samaria Division will be reinforced by two additional battalions,” the army said in a statement. The IDF declined to provide details on numbers of troops, but battalions are usually made up of several hundred soldiers. It follows emergency security consultations between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, following which the government froze tens of thousands of visitor permits for Palestinian Arabs into Israeli sovereign territory in response to the massacre. IDF forces also acted quickly to seal off the attackers’ hometown of Yatta, adjacent to Hebron. On Thursday morning, Defense Minister Liberman told reporters at the scene of the attack that “does not intend to make do with just talk.” “I came here to salute the people of Tel Aviv who endured another (attack), and despite this know how to return to life as normal,” Liberman said as he stood in Sarona Market. “I do not intend to elaborate on the steps we intend to take, but… I don’t intend to make do with just words.”

It continued: “The current US administration’s targeting of the resistance and its supporters through the Lebanese banking sector is doomed to fail and will not succeed in achieving its objectives.” On Wednesday, Salameh revealed on the American CNBC television station that one hundred bank accounts associated with Hezbollah were frozen in accordance with directives issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of Treasury. The Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Act, which threatens to sanction anyone who finances the group, prompted the Central Bank to take these measures to maintain the country’s financial stability. A diplomatic feud between Saudi Arabia and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is escalating. The U.N. chief says the kingdom pressured him into removing the Saudi coalition in Yemen from a blacklist of entitites that harm children during conflicts. “It is unacceptable for member states to exert undue pressure,” Ban told reporters Thursday, in reference to the U.N. report published earlier this week that listed the Saudi Arabia-led coalition as one of the parties that “kill and maim children” and “engage in attacks on schools and/or hospitals.” The Saudis were quick to admonish the United Nations for putting them and their allies on the annual blacklist that includes shady governments such as Bashar al-Assad’s in Syria and Omar al-Bashir’s in Sudan and the Islamic State terror group. Credible reports surfaced that the Saudis and other coalition members threatened to pull their funding from U.N. agencies and humanitarian operations if they were not de-listed, a move that could cripple already cash-strapped life-saving programs, including many serving Arabs and Muslims. Ban appeared to confirm those reports Thursday, telling reporters, “I also had to consider the very real prospect that millions of other children would suffer grievously if, as was suggested to me, countries would de-fund many U.N. programs.”

Syrian government forces and their allies took control of a strategic crossroads in Raqqa province Friday in their latest advance towards ISIS strongholds in the area, the army and activists said. The seizure of the junction, which leads to Raqqa city, ISIS’s de facto capital and also to Tabqa (Al Tabqah), another city it controls, came as part of a week-old Syrian government offensive against the extremists, backed by Russian air power. The Syrian army’s campaign is taking place as U.S.-backed forces separately advance against ISIS militants around Manbij near the Turkish border further northwest and make gains in the countryside north of Raqqa city. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said government-allied forces were 15 km (9 miles) from Tabqa. A military source said in February that Tabqa, some 50 km (30 miles) west of Raqqa city, would be the first target of a Syrian government attack in Raqqa province. The army said large numbers of ISIS fighters had been killed in the campaign. The Observatory said some 80 ISIS militants had died.

Arab-Kurdish fighters backed by the United States Friday cut ISIS’s main supply route between Syria and Turkey in a major setback for the extremists. he extremists lost control Friday of a vital supply artery when Arab-Kurdish forces completely surrounded a key extremist-held town. “The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) cut off the last road from Manbij to the Turkish border,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based pro-opposition monitoring group. Manbij lies at the heart of the last stretch of territory along Turkey’s border still under ISIS control, and was a key point on the extremists’ supply line from Turkey. Other secondary roads to the frontier are more dangerous and difficult to access, Observatory head Rami Abdel-Rahman said. The U.S. envoy to the anti-ISIS coalition backing the SDF, Brett McGurk, confirmed the road had been severed. “ISIL terrorists now completely surrounded with no way out,” he wrote on Twitter, using another acronym for ISIS. This week the SDF, backed by coalition airstrikes, cut the road north out of Manbij to the ISIS-held border town of Jarabulus, which the extremists had used as a transit point for fighters, money and weapons. The SDF also blocked the road south out of Manbij heading to ISIS’s de facto capital of Raqqa.

Kurdish Headline: Kurdish group claims responsibility for Istanbul attack
A Kurdish militant group on Friday claimed responsibility for a car-bomb attack in Istanbul this week that killed 11 people, saying it was just the beginning of a war. In a statement posted online, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons also warned tourists that Turkey was no longer secure for them. “You are not our targets but Turkey is no longer safe for you,” it read. “We have just started the war.” The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons is considered an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and has carried out several attacks in the past. It denounced the ruling Justice and Development Party, which was founded by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for its “wild war” against Kurds. Turkey’s southeast plunged into violence last summer when a 2½-year fragile truce between the state and Kurdish rebels collapsed. The rush hour car-bomb attack on Tuesday morning targeted a police vehicle in Istanbul and injured 36 people in addition to those killed. Istanbul’s bombing was followed on Wednesday by a suicide attack in the southeastern town of Midyat that killed three police officers and three civilians. On Thursday, The PKK said the Midyat attack was carried out by one of its “comrades,” code name Dirok Amed. The authorities were quick to report they suspected Kurdish militants in both cases. The claims of responsibility confirmed those suspicions.

The senior U.S. defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the decision would also allow greater use of U.S. air power, particularly close air support. Significant gains have been made by Libyan government air, sea and land forces fighting to recapture the central city of Sirte from so-called Islamic State, officials say. Warplanes bombed IS positions in Sirte while naval forces fired missiles into key areas including the port that are held by the militants, officials say. The battle for the city began last month but has recently intensified. Libya still has rival regional administrations and armed forces in the east and west of the country, with each battling extremist militants in their territories. The forces spearheading the advance on Sirte are the Tripoli-based UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA). Somali Islamist militant group al-Shabab says it has killed 60 Ethiopian soldiers in an attack on an African Union base in central Somalia. The AU mission (Amisom) says it repulsed the attack, killing 110 militants. Residents in Halgan told the BBC they had heard a huge bang followed by a heavy exchange of gunfire. Amisom supports the government as it fights to regain control of the country from al-Shabab. In a series of tweets it has said its soldiers, alongside troops from the Somali army, “drove back the attackers who are now on the run with the joint forces in pursuit”. Ethiopia has denied that any of its soldiers were killed.

The Russian Foreign ministry said Moscow would respond to a U.S. naval ship’s entry into the Black Sea with unspecified measures, saying it and other deployments were designed to ratchet up tensions ahead of a NATO summit, the RIA news agency reported. Russian state media reported that the USS Porter, a U.S. naval destroyer, entered the Black Sea a few days ago on a routine deployment, a move it said raised hackles in Moscow because it had recently been fitted with a new missile system. Headline: Why big investors think it’s time to hoard gold
Fear is on the rise and so is the price of gold. Gold futures for August hit a three-week high Thursday, rising to $1,272.70 per ounce, just under a key resistance level of $1,275. The yellow metal is up about 20 percent year to date, and some high-profile investors — like George Soros and Stanley Druckenmiller — have made no secret that they see bad times ahead in the markets and gold is a safer bet. “As far as the geopolitical element, it’s certainly not a chicken little atmosphere,” said Jim Steel, chief commodities analyst at HSBC. “I think there’s enough uncertainty facing the global economy and even some geopolitical tensions to keep buying the gold market.” Investors believing they need to have gold in their portfolio as a hedge against the outcome of easy central bank policies and for other safety reasons are fueling a run in the metal. Some analysts say gold could easily climb above $1,300 an ounce. In fact, DoubleLine Capital CEO Jeff Gundlach likes it, and he says gold could go to $1,400. Soros has reportedly been buying both gold and gold mining shares, while Drunkenmiller told investors last month to get out of stocks altogether and buy the yellow metal due to concerns about China’s economy and the Fed‘s easy money policies. Analysts say there are a host of reasons investors are loading up on gold, and at some point later this year, the U.S. presidential election could be seen as one of them.

An earthquake in Nicaragua forced patients at a damaged hospital to spend the night outdoors and coastal residents to flee out of fear of a tsunami. The epicenter of the 6.1-magnitude earthquake late Thursday was 16 miles northeast of the city of Chinandega, near the border with Honduras, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Buildings, including a church, were damaged. Schools have been closed in Leon and Chinandega, Nicaraguan presidential education adviser Salvador Vanegas said. Patients of a Chinandega hospital spent the night outdoors on gurneys, the newspaper La Prensa reported, adding some residents of the town of Punta Venecia, on the Pacific Ocean, evacuated their homes in the expectation of a tsunami.
