Headline: Israel Is ‘Destroying’ Al-Aqsa Mosque for ‘Alleged’ Temple
The Palestinian Authority (PA) has been stepping up its libel that Israel is “destroying” the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, in order to build the “alleged” Temple. The highest PA religious authority, Mufti Muhammad Hussein, asserted in late March that Israel was making an “attempt… at lay[ing] hands on the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque… [and] in addition to the threat of destroying the Al-Aqsa Mosque to establish the alleged Temple on its ruins.” Palestinian Media Watch translated the comments, which were made by the same mufti who in 2012 publicly called for the genocide of the Jewish people. The comments were made ahead of the recent series of Arab riots on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem raging since last week, in which Israeli police have been attacked by rocks and firebombs, and limits have been placed on Muslim visitors as well as Jewish visitors.

Headline: Calls to Fire Internal Security Minister Over Temple Mount Riots
Likud MK and Knesset Deputy Speaker Moshe Feiglin has called on Prime Minister Netanyahu to investigate the recent riots by Muslim extremists on the Temple Mount, and to take action to put an end to intimidation and violence against Jews on Judaism’s holiest site – action which he says should include firing Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Feiglin branded the string of riots over the Pesach (Passover) holiday as a “Hamas takeover on the Temple Mount.” He described how “Hamas flags were flown on the Mount”, as Islamists succeeded repeatedly in blocking Jews and tourist groups from visiting the holy site, and said the “sheer helplessness of the Israeli Police” marked a security failure so severe that it was impossible to overlook. “We are talking about a loss of sovereignty in the heart of hearts of the capital of Israel, in the holiest place for the Jewish people, and the handing over [of sovereignty] to a terrorist movement which inscribes [calls for] the destruction of the State of Israel on its flag.”

Headline: IAF targets Gaza terror cell preparing to launch rockets into Israel
The IAF attempted to strike a terror cell in the Gaza Strip that was preparing to fire rockets into Israel on Wednesday, security sources said. The terror cell was identified by the Shin Bet (Israeli Security Agency) and constituted an imminent threat to Israeli security, according to the sources. The IAF acknowledged that the strike missed its target. Medical officials in the Hamas-ruled territory said that four people were wounded in the strike. The attack came two days after terrorists in the Palestinian enclave launched seven rockets into southern Israel. There was no immediate word on the identities of those wounded in the air strike, launched just after Hamas Islamists and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s Palestine Liberation Organization announced a unity agreement in Gaza City.

The Palestinian Authority is engaged in a multi-pronged effort to press the U.S. to continue talks to create a Palestinian state beyond Secretary of State John Kerry’s deadline for momentum at the end of this month. According to informed Middle Eastern security officials, the PA pressure tactics include re-establishing its terrorist group, the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades; threatening to dismantle the PA; and efforts to reconcile with the rival Hamas terror group in the Gaza Strip. Kerry had imposed a deadline for the outline of an Israeli-PA interim agreement at the end of April, but the talks have reportedly stalled. PA President Mahmoud Abbas is now working several fronts to pressure Washington to extend the deadline. One such front is a claim that in the absence of an agreement, Abbas will have no choice but to dismantle the PA. Meanwhile, Fatah’s military wing, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, has announced they “will adhere to the option of armed resistance until the liberation of all of Palestine,” the independent Palestinian news agency Ma’an reported. The expression “the liberation of all of Palestine” is a common Palestinian euphemism used to refer to the destruction of Israel.

Headline: Report: Fatah and Hamas agree to form unity government within 5 weeks
Hamas and Fatah were preparing to implement a historic reconciliation deal on Wednesday, nearly seven years after a schism between the rival Palestinian factions. “There has been great progress, and we are near ready to sign a deal, at 11 A.M.,” Mounib Al-Masri, a member of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ delegation in the Gaza Strip said. Sami Abu Zahawiri, Hamas spokesman in Gaza, issued a similar statement in an interview with Nazareth’s Radio al-Shams. Al-Masri said that the two sides had reached an agreement on all of the issues, including holding elections within six months. A unity government headed by Abbas would be created in the coming period, Al-Masri said. The reconciliation deal is expected to be based primarily on the agreements signed by the factions in Cairo and in Doha. The two sides have still not agreed on a few issues including the future of Hamas’ security forces, which were created after the Islamist group seized power in a bloody 2007 coup in the Gaza Strip. It is not yet clear whether Hamas will agree to dismantle the forces or to allow them to be under the supervision and command of the Palestinian Authority’s security forces. Representatives of the movements met on Sunday in Cairo and according to reports from Egypt, they achieved “real progress” after Hamas agreed to give in on one of the fundamental conditions of the agreement, by which “all clauses of the agreement are to be viewed as a single entity.”

You can have one but not the other. I hope he chooses peace, [but] so far he hasn’t done so.” After torpedoing peace talks by applying to 15 international conventions, threatening to disband the PA, and approaching Hamas for a unity pact, Abbas reiterated more demands to Israel on Tuesday – this time insisting on a three-month construction freeze in Judea and Samaria prior to renewing peace talks.

Amin Maqboul, a member of the Fatah revolutionary council, told the Palestinian newspaper al-Quds that the Palestinian Authority would agree to an extension of negotiations if Israel agreed to: announce the basis on which future talks will be held; draw the outline of the borders of a Palestinian state within the next three months; halt settlement construction; withdraw Israeli troops from the West Bank’s Area C to the lines held before the Second Intifada; release the fourth wave of prisoners that it has until now refused to do; end what he called “disruptions” in Jerusalem and open Palestinian institutions in the city.

Headline:Syria lawmaker becomes first presidential challenger
A communist lawmaker has registered as the first challenger for the Syrian presidency in an upcoming election expected to return incumbent Bashar al-Assad to power, the speaker of parliament said Wednesday. “We have received information from the higher constitutional court that member of parliament Maher Abdel Hafiz Hajjar has filed his candidacy for the post of president of the Syrian Arab Republic,” state television quoted Mohammad Lahham as saying. Hajjar’s candidacy was announced two days after Lahham said Syria would hold a presidential election on June 3. Hajjar was born in Aleppo in 1968 and has been a member of the Syrian Communist Party since 1984, the broadcaster said. He “took part in the peaceful, popular movement at the start of the crisis,” it added, referring to Arab Spring-inspired demonstrations against Assad that erupted in March 2011. The Syrian opposition has slammed the planned election as a “farce,” while the United Nations and the Arab League have said it poses a major obstacle to efforts for a negotiated peace.

Syrian rebels have been sighted wielding anti-aircraft weapons in various combat sectors including the Damascus region in the last few days. Just as on April 6, debkafile was the first publication to disclose the arming of Syrian opposition forces with their first US weapons, BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missiles, our military sources now reveal that they have also acquired – and are using – Russian-made 9K310 Igla-1 aka SA-16 anti-tank rockets, which have an operational range of 5.2 km. The SA-16 is not new, but it is effective and has been widely used for the past 30 years by various armies in several world conflicts. According to our sources, the very US-Saudi suppliers, who brought the TOW missiles to certain Syrian rebel units through Jordan and Turkey, are now consigning the anti-tank weapons through the same route. But although the rebels are now armed for the first time in the more than three-year conflict with a weapon for combating Bashar Assad’s air force, it has come too late to reverse the tide of war. As the Syrian air force drops barrel bombs and chlorine gas canisters on indiscriminate targets, the rebel side continues to be in retreat against the Syrian army’s pumped-up momentum.

The United States has said it would not grant a visa to Abutalebi because of his connection to the 1979-1981 Tehran hostage crisis when Iranian students seized the U.S. Embassy and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. Headline: South Korea: North appears close to nuclear test
North Korea could well be preparing to carry out a fourth nuclear test, South Korea said Tuesday, citing increased activity at its main test site just days ahead of a visit to Seoul by US President Barack Obama. “Our military is currently detecting a lot of activity in and around the Punggye-ri nuclear test site,” defense ministry spokesman Kim Min-Seok told a press briefing. Kim stressed that North Korea’s nuclear weapons program was at a stage where it could conduct a test “at any moment” once the order was given by the leadership in Pyongyang. North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests — in 2006, 2009 and 2013 — all at the Punggye-ri site in the northeast of the country. Kim declined to give details of the monitored activity, but cautioned that it may be no more than a “deception tactic” to raise tensions ahead of Obama’s visit which is due to begin on Friday. “We are thinking of possibilities that the North may stage a surprise nuclear test or just pretend to stage a nuclear test,” Kim said. Obama is visiting Seoul as part of an Asia tour, and there has been widespread speculation that the North may stage a provocation to coincide with the trip.

U.S. President Barack Obama has said Washington welcomes China’s rise but that engagement with Beijing would not come at the expense of its Asian allies – as Chinese state media greeted his arrival in the region with a broadside accusing the United States of wanting to “cage” the emerging superpower. The reassuring remarks aimed at Japan and other allies, set against a robust commentary from China’s state news agency Xinhua that also called the United States “myopic”, demonstrate the delicate balancing act Obama faces on a week-long Asia tour. Headline: Study: Antibiotic-Resistant MRSA ‘Superbug’ Found In US Homes
An anti-biotic resistant “superbug” that has long affected hospitals and other health care locations around the world has now found a new “reservoir” location: inside U.S. homes. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacteria that is resistant to many of the strongest antibiotics, and although recent prevalence has been limited to hospitals and nursing homes, a new study of 161 New York City residents who contracted the MRSA infections finds that the these people’s homes were “major reservoirs” for the bacteria strains, HealthDay reports. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that in communities outside of health care settings, most MRSA strains are skin infections that are spread by physical contact, such as the sharing of towels or razors. Athletes, military barracks, prisons and other close-quarter living areas are at an increased risk of contracting and spreading the bug. In medical facilities, MRSA causes life-threatening bloodstream infections, pneumonia and surgical infections. But the new study shows that the MRSA “reservoirs” have spread into average U.S. homes. “What our findings show is it’s also endemic in households,” lead researcher Dr. Anne-Catrin Uhlemann, of Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, tells HealthDay, from the study published in the Proceedings for the National Academy of Sciences.

Headline: Saudi Arabia reports 11 new cases of MERS virus, first in Makkah
Saudi Arabia said it had discovered 11 more cases of the potentially deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), including what appeared to be the first case in Makkah.
A health ministry statement said eight of the people were in intensive care, two were stable, including a 24-year-old Saudi man from the “holy capital” Makkah, and one showed no symptoms. Three of those affected worked in health care, it said. Of Wednesday’s 11 new cases, four were recorded in Riyadh, six in Jeddah and one in Makkah, the statement said.
The latest cases bring the total number of confirmed cases in the Kingdom to 272, of whom 81 have died.

Headline: Secular Group Files Lawsuit in New Jersey Against ‘Under God’ in Pledge
A Washington, D.C.-based secular organization has filed a lawsuit against the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance. The American Humanist Association announced Monday that a New Jersey school district will be the latest entity sued over the two words. David Niose, attorney for the American Humanist Association’s Appignani Humanist Legal Center, said in a statement that he believes the pledge’s words are religiously coercive. “Public schools should not engage in an exercise that tells students that patriotism is tied to a belief in God,” said Niose. “Such a daily exercise portrays atheist and humanist children as second-class citizens, and certainly contributes to anti-atheist prejudices.” The lawsuit is being brought on behalf of an anonymous Monmouth County family that claims the words under God are discriminatory against non-theists.

The US Tuesday (22 April) announced it is sending hundreds of troops for military exercises to four countries in Eastern Europe to assure them of its commitment to the region’s defence amid ongoing tension in Ukraine. The 600 US troops will be deployed to Poland and the three Baltic countries – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania – and will conduct live ammunition exercises with forces from the four host states. The US Pentagon said the move was in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine. “If there’s a message to Moscow, it is the exact same message, that we take our obligations very, very seriously on the continent of Europe,” said Pentagon press secretary, Rear Admiral John Kirby on Tuesday, according to US media reports. Meanwhile, Ukrainian acting Prime Minister Alexander Turchinov announced renewed efforts to perform “counter-terrorism” operations against pro-Russian demonstrators Wednesday – after two bodies were found bearing signs of torture, allegedly by the demonstrators. The bodies were found near the beleaguered city of Slaviansk Tuesday; one of them has been confirmed as Vladimir Rybak, a local parliamentarian.

Headline: Intel chief bars spies from talking to press
The Obama administration has issued a new directive warning most intelligence agency workers that they are forbidden from talking to the press without permission. The directive was revealed Monday by the Federation of American Scientists’ Project on Government Secrecy, and comes months after documents leaked by former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden rattled the intelligence community. The directive issued by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper in March says employees who don’t follow the order could have their security clearances revoked, lose their jobs or face criminal prosecution. The order does not distinguish between classified and unclassified intelligence matters.
