An Islamic State operative snuck into the Gaza Strip through Hamas’ system of underground tunnels connecting the Palestinian-ruled area with the Sinai Peninsula, Israel said on Friday.
In an interview with the Saudi news site Elaph, the coordinator for government activities in the territories, Maj.-Gen. Yoav Mordechai, said that the ISIS operative was due to undergo military training in Gaza. Mordechai told Elaph that the ISIS gunman was admitted into the Gaza Strip in coordination with a senior Hamas official in Rafah, Said Abdel al-A’al
The general said that this development is indicative of greater cooperation between the Palestinian Islamist group and the Sinai branch of the jihadist organization that has managed to capture wide swaths of Syria and Iraq in the last five years. Mordechai said that Hamas has extended medical assistance to ISIS fighters who have recently been wounded in clashes with Egyptian security forces. In return, ISIS has given Hamas cash and weapons.

Headline: French FM set to meet with PM in bid to sell peace plan
Headline: Israel sees ‘many problems’ with French peace initiative
French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault will reportedly arrive in Jerusalem on Saturday, in a bid to persuade Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept France’s efforts to engineer a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, based on a two-state solution. The Haaretz daily said Netanyahu is expected to strongly criticize the French plan during his talks with Ayrault in Jerusalem, while the foreign minister “will try to persuade him not to reject it out of hand.” According to Haaretz, Ayrault will arrive in Israel on Saturday night, meet with Netanyahu on Sunday morning, then head to Ramallah for talks with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The foreign minister will depart on Sunday evening. The paper quoted French diplomats as saying that although the prime minister has publicly opposed the French plan, Ayrault “wants to hear Netanyahu’s views in person.” The meeting comes a week before French Prime Minister Manuel Valls is also due to visit Israel and the Palestinian territories, in what his office said was an attempt to relaunch the peace process following the worst flare-up of violence in the Gaza Strip for two years.

Hundreds of Palestinians decked out with their country’s flag took to the waters of the south Lebanon city of Sidon to mark the 68th anniversary of the Nakba. The vessels that moved in formation and hoisted the Palestinian flags sailed south along the coast of Sidon toward Palestine, to symbolize their hope of returning to their land. The Palestinians had rallied at the Sidon sea fortress since the early hours of the morning to take part in the symbolic event. May 15 is the day on which Palestinians remember their expulsion from Palestine, where Israel was founded in 1948. “The Nakba reached its 68th year and we (Palestinians) are dispersed across the world away from our beloved Palestine which has been taken by the Jews,” head of Tawasol association Assef Moussa told The Daily Star. He said that the move is a message to the children that Palestine still exists and that “we will return no matter how long it takes.”

Hezbollah’s top military commander Mustafa Badreddine has been killed in a blast at a base near Damascus airport, the Lebanese Shi’ite group said on Friday, one of the biggest blows to its leadership the Iranian-backed organization has ever sustained. Hezbollah did not immediately say on Friday who it blamed for the attack, but its deputy leader Sheikh Naim Qassem said there were clear indications of who was behind it, and the group would announce the outcome of its investigation within hours. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. At least one Hezbollah figure blamed the group’s age-old enemy Israel, which has struck Hezbollah targets in Syria several times in the past since civil war started there in 2011. Israel declined to comment, but a former Israeli official said his country would be glad Badreddine was dead. Hezbollah also has many other foes in Syria, where it fights in support of the government of President Bashar al-Assad against a range of Sunni Muslim groups including Islamic State. Thousands of Hezbollah fighters and leaders gathered at a mosque in Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut and gave Badreddine a military funeral, waving Hezbollah flags. They chanted Shi’ite religious slogans, as well as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel”. Speaking at the funeral, Qassem also vowed that the group would continue on the “path” of Badreddine.

Militants, including suicide bombers, killed at least 15 Yemeni troops outside the southeastern port city of Mukalla on Thursday, the army said, in attacks claimed by extremists. Several soldiers were also wounded in the attacks on the eastern outskirts of the Hadramawt provincial capital, the official said. The deadly assault came shortly before Prime Minister Ahmed bin Dagher arrived in Mukalla with several ministers on a one-day visit aimed at reviving government institutions in the city, a local official said. One suicide bomber rammed a vehicle packed with explosives into the gate of a base in the Khalf district, followed immediately by a second who blew up a car in the center of the camp, the military official said. Terrorists clashed with soldiers outside the base immediately after the bombings, with the army saying at least 15 soldiers had died in the bombings and gunfight.

Al Qaida affiliate Nusra Front and its Sunni Islamist allies seized an Alawite village in central Syria on May 12. Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham, an ultraconservative Sunni Islamic militant group, launched an assault on the village of Zara, killing more than 30 pro-Assad regime fighters, according to the Local Coordination Committees activist group. Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi said “terrorists” were killing townspeople, while Syrian state media said militants had looted and destroyed homes in the village, which was previously controlled by President Bashar Assad’s government. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that seven jihadists were killed in the battle and clashes between the terror alliance and pro-government forces were ongoing as allied Russian aircraft pounded the rebel alliance’s positions. Assad and his family are Alawites, an offshoot of Shi’ite Islam, while the majority of Syrians are Sunni Muslims. Meanwhile, the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) was forced to cancel an aid convoy to the nearby town of al-Houla, citing security concerns. The 24-truck convoy with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) was to make the first aid delivery to the town since March, when aid reached 70,000 residents in the area for the first time since May 2015.

Syria Headline: Airstrikes kill at least 12 in northern Syria regions
Suspected Syrian government airstrikes in the northern city of Idlib killed at least 12 people on Friday, activists said. The strikes came as part of an intensified air campaign launched after Islamic militants, including al-Qaida fighters, seized a central Alawite village. President Bashar Assad hails from the Alawite minority, an offshoot of Shiite Islam that has been targeted by Sunni militants throughout the civil war. Raed Saleh, the head of a first responders group that operates in opposition-held areas, said at least 15 bodies, including those of three children, were pulled from the rubble after two airstrikes in a residential area of Idlib. He said another 38 people were wounded. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on activists inside Syria, put the death toll at 12 and said it was likely to rise as rescue efforts were still underway. A coalition of insurgent groups, including the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front, captured Idlib and the surrounding province of the same name last year. The airstrikes came a day after insurgents captured the village of Zaara in central Syria, where activists and government media said dozens of civilians were killed. Ahmad al-Ahmad, an activist from the nearby city of Hama, and the Observatory said airstrikes were also launched around Zaara on Friday, where clashes were still underway.

Iraqi Headline: Islamic State kills 17 Iraqi soldiers with suicide truck bombs
Islamic State insurgents killed at least 17 Iraqi soldiers with suicide truck bombs on Thursday in a major attack on government forces that recaptured the western city of Ramadi in December, military officials said. The attacks near Ramadi dealt one of the heaviest blows to the army since it drove Islamic State out of the western city five months ago. An army colonel told Reuters that militants killed at least 17 soldiers with suicide truck bombs in Jarayshi, 10 km (6 miles) north of Ramadi. They also surrounded an army regiment, seized a bridge and cut a key supply route linking Ramadi to the Thirthar district further north, army sources said. Air strikes by a U.S.-led coalition later allowed government forces to regain control of the supply route. But despite army reinforcements, the militants had dug into northern residential areas by nightfall and were lobbing mortars at government positions across the Euphrates river. The jihadist group also killed two policemen and wounded eight others in two suicide bombings in Abu Ghraib outside Baghdad, a day after killing at least 80 people in bombings at an outdoor market and two checkpoints inside the capital.

Iraqi Headline: Twin suicide attacks hit police station near Baghdad, kill 5
A twin suicide bombing hit a police station in Baghdad’s westernmost suburb on Thursday, killing at least five policemen. In Thursday’s attack, two suicide bombers hit the station in the western suburb of Abu Ghraib at dawn, according to a police officer. The first bomber blew himself up at the station’s gate, followed by the second who detonated his explosives inside the building, the officer said. The explosion also left 12 policemen wounded. A medical official confirmed casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to release information. The Sadr City bombing on Wednesday killed 68 people while two more car bombs elsewhere in Baghdad killed at least 30. After the attacks, grieving relatives and family members lit candles at the scene of Sadr City bombing as calls came from mosques in Baghdad for blood donations. Many of the victims were being buried Thursday in the southern Shiite city of Najaf, where a sprawling cemetery is located near a shrine for a revered Shiite imam.

A total of six soldiers were killed in clashes with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) while two pilots died as a military helicopter which was dispatched to pursue militants crashed in the eastern province of Hakkari early on May 13. Six soldiers were killed and eight others were wounded as clashes erupted between security forces and PKK militants at the Çığlı base in Hakkari’s Çukurca district at around 4:50 a.m. on May 13. A helicopter was sent to the area to intervene against the militants but the helicopter crashed at around 5:50 a.m. due to an unknown technical problem. A ninth soldier was killed in the Kaynarca town of Kırklareli’s Pınarhisar district as a military vehicle rolled down a hill for an unknown reason during a military exercise. Meanwhile, eight suspected members of the PKK were detained in an operation launched after a bomb attack in Istanbul’s Sancaktepe district. Eight people, of whom five were soldiers, were injured when a bomb-laden car was detonated near a military post in Sancaktepe on May 12.

American Special Operations troops have been stationed at two outposts in eastern and western Libya since late 2015, tasked with lining up local partners in advance of a possible offensive against the Islamic State, U.S. officials said. Two teams totaling fewer than 25 troops are operating from around the cities of Misurata and Benghazi to identify potential allies among local armed factions and gather intelligence on threats, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive mission overseas. The insertion of a tiny group of U.S. personnel into a country rife with militant threats reflects the Obama administration’s worries about the Islamic State’s powerful Libyan branch and the widespread expectations of an expanded campaign against it. For months, the Pentagon has been developing plans for potential action against the group, which has at least several thousand fighters in the coastal city of Sirte and other areas. Headline: Islamic State claims suicide bombing in Maiduguri
The Islamic State West Africa (ISWA), formerly known as Boko Haram, released a statement claiming responsibility for yesterday’s suicide bombing in Maiduguri, the capital of the northeastern Borno State. There are conflicting reports about the damage from the attack. In the statement, the jihadist group claimed “no less than 15 were killed” and that 20 other people were injured in the suicide bombing. It went on to say that “after planning in advance, it was possible for the brother Abu Anas al Ansari (pictured above) to detonate his explosive belt in the middle of the apostate Nigerian parliament gathering in Maiduguri.” However, the numbers given by the Islamic State have widely differed with press reports from the region. While the media corroborated the ISWA’s information that two police officers were killed in the attack, the number of civilians killed has ranged anywhere from two to five people. Reuters, quoting rescue workers from the scene, reported five people were killed in the blast and that 19 others were left wounded. Nigerian news outlet The Vanguard reported only the two policemen at the gates of the Borno State Government Secretariat were killed in the attack.

President Vladimir Putin has described the development of NATO’s U.S.-led missile defense program as a threat to global security and vowed that Russia will take the necessary steps to maintain a strategic parity. Putin, speaking Friday at a meeting with military officials, scoffed at U.S. claims that the shield isn’t aimed against Russia but instead intended to fend off a missile threat from Iran. The system includes a site in Romania that became operational Thursday. Putin said Russia will not get drawn into an arms race, but added that it will modify its military modernization plans “to fend off the emerging threat to Russia’s security.” He added that Russia “will do everything needed to ensure and preserve the strategic balance, which is the most reliable guarantee from large-scale military conflicts.”

Headline: Rare Human Disease Found In Dogs
Pet parents in metro Detroit are worried after a disease that has only been known to affect humans has been discovered for the first time in dogs. A rare, severe form of pulmonary hypertension — which up until now has only been classified as a human lung disease — has also been discovered in dogs, according to a Michigan State University study. “Our research is the first to document the existence of pulmonary veno-occlusive disease, or PVOD, in dogs,” Kurt Williams, the lead author of the study and an expert in respiratory pathology in MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, said in a statement. “PVOD is considered one of the most severe forms of pulmonary hypertension.” Pulmonary hypertension develops because of abnormal blood vessels in the lungs, which makes it harder for the heart to push blood through and provide oxygen to the rest of the body. In cases of PVOD, the small veins in the lungs become blocked, increasing pressure in these blood vessels and ultimately causing heart failure. “The same process happens in canines,” Williams said. “These dogs also come in with similar symptoms as humans, yet because subtle changes in health may not be recognized as quickly in dogs, death can occur quickly once the animal is seen by a veterinarian.” Symptoms include cough, increased rate of breathi ng, respiratory distress, loss of appetite and chronic fatigue.

Headline: 5.6-magnitude earthquake rocks northeast Taiwan
An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale has hit northeast Taiwan, the US Geological Survey (USGS) says, with tremors felt in the country’s capital, Taipei. According to the USGS, the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles) just northeast of the coastal town of Suao, located 60 kilometers from the capital, at 11:17 am (0317) GMT on Thursday. No reports of possible damage or casualties have been received yet. In February, a 6.4 magnitude quake struck southern Taiwan, bringing down a large apartment complex, which resulted in the death of more than 100 people.
