Headline: Hamas Refuses to Stop Killing Jews
The terror group Hamas says that it will continue its “armed resistance” against Israel and Jewish people “in all of its forms” until Israel is destroyed, according to a statement by one of the terror group’s top officials. Hamas’ renewed commitment to violence will not interfere with its efforts to form a unity government with the rival Palestinian Authority, which is led by President Mahmoud Abbas, according to the statement released by senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk on his Facebook page. Marzouk released the statement on Thursday, which marked the 66th anniversary of what the Arabs refer to as the Nakba, or a day of mourning the establishment of the state of Israel, which they view as a “catastrophe.” Hamas will not renounce violence until Israel is destroyed, according to the statement, a stance that would legally force the United States to cut off aid to the Palestinians should the unity government move forward.

Headline: Abbas in Venezuela to seek backing for observer status
Acting Palestinian Authority (PA) Chief Mahmoud Abbas has visited Venezuela to seek support for observer status in three Latin American regional organizations. Abbas, who arrived in Venezuela on Thursday, is scheduled to hold talks with President Nicolas Maduro on Palestinians relations with Latin American countries. Abbas is also planning to garner support for Palestinian Authority’s quest to be granted observer status in the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). The visit comes days after Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which includes Abbas’ Fatah party, agreed to resolve their differences and form a unity government.

Security forces dispatched reinforcements to Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem early Friday, ahead of the funerals of two Palestinian Arab terrorists who were killed during Thursday’s “Nakba Day” riots, which mourn the failure of a combined pan-Arab army to annihilate the fledgling state of Israel in 1948 and massacre its inhabitants, just three years after the gas chambers in Auschwitz stopped operating. An initial investigation suggests that contrary to the Palestinian Authority (PA)’s claims, the two terrorists were shot only after breaking security barriers near the Ofer prison compound, where some 150 violent extremists had gathered to pressure Israel into releasing terrorists. The rioters were shot with rubber bullets; the IDF has pledged to undertake an internal investigation. Headline: Livni, Abbas meet for first time since breakdown in peace talks
Justice Minister Tzipi Livni met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in London on Thursday, a senior Israeli official said. This is the first meeting between Abbas and a senior Israeli minister in several months. Livni, who is the senior Israeli negotiator in the peace talks with the Palestinians, told Abbas in the meeting that the establishment of a unity government with Hamas is very problematic for Israel and will make it difficult to renew negotiations. The Israeli official said that the goal of the meeting was to attempt to understand Abbas’ intentions following the breakdown of peace talks with Israel. The meeting was arranged on short notice due to the fact that both Livni and Abbas were in London at the same time. The official said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was notified by Livni ahead of the meeting. Israel’s Channel 2 was the first to report on the meeting.

U.S. President Barack Obama sees Israel as being responsible for the failure of the recent peace talks with the Palestinian Authority (PA), according to a senior official in Washington who was quoted by the New York Times on Friday. The unnamed official told the newspaper that the president believes that Israel’s announcements of new construction in Judea and Samaria were to blame for the failure. “At every juncture, there was a settlement announcement,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. “It was the thing that kept throwing a wrench in the gears.” The official said that Obama has now decided to take a conspicuous breather from the Middle East peace process, in order “to let the failure of the talks sink in for both parties, and see if that causes them to reconsider.”

Hezbollah, Lebanon’s most powerful terrorist organization, stated Friday it had warned the Maronite patriarch of the “negative repercussions” of his plan to accompany Pope Francis to Jerusalem this month. “We presented our perspective and point of view and laid out what we see as the negative repercussions of this visit,” Ibrahim Amin al-Sayed, head of the terror group’s “political council,” said after meeting Patriarch Beshara Rai. Sayed said Hezbollah hoped “that this perspective is taken into account”. Rai is set to become the first Maronite patriarch to visit Jerusalem since it came under full Israeli control after the 1967 war. The decision to join Pope Francis on his May 24-26 trip has caused some controversy in Lebanon, which is technically at war with Israel and bans its citizens from visiting the Jewish state. Rai has defended the visit as a purely religious matter, and said he has a duty to welcome the pope in Jerusalem. “The pope is going to the Holy Land and Jerusalem. He is going to the diocese of the patriarch, so it’s normal that the patriarch should welcome him,” Rai told AFP this month.

Rebels fired a rocket that struck a government-held neighborhood Friday in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, killing 13 people, Syria’s state news agency reported. The battle for Syria’s largest city has taken on new urgency as President Bashar al-Assad’s forces have seized the momentum with the fall of Homs and other areas around the capital, Damascus. Aleppo has been carved up into opposition- and government-held areas since the rebels launched an offensive there in July 2012, capturing territory along Syria’s northern border with Turkey. State news agency SAN’A said the rocket attack in the northern neighborhood of Achrafieh also wounded 17 people. The agency said the attack was carried out by “terrorists,” the term the government uses to refer to rebels. It said the shells also damaged two houses in the area. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of activists around the country, said the Achrafieh attack killed 10 people including three children. The attack came a day after similar shelling on the neighborhood killed three people and wounded 20.

Iran has been recruiting thousands of Afghan refugees to fight in Syria, offering $500 a month and Iranian residency to help the Assad regime beat back rebel forces, according to Afghans and Western officials. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, recruits and trains Shiite militias to fight in Syria. Details of their recruitment efforts were posted this week on a blog focused on Afghan refugees in Iran and confirmed by the office of Grand Ayatollah Mohaghegh Kabuli, an Afghan religious leader in the Iranian holy city of Qom. A member of the IRGC also confirmed the details. “They [IRGC] find a connection to the refugee community and work on convincing our youth to go and fight in Syria,” said the office administrator of Ayatollah Kabuli, reached by telephone in Qom. “They give them everything from salary to residency.” Tehran is also offering them school registration for their children and charity cards. Many Afghan young men have written to Ayatollah Kabuli to ask whether fighting in Syria was religiously sanctioned, his office said. He responded only if they were defending Shiite shrines. Lately, his office said he has kept silent and not even attended funerals of Afghans killed in Syria.

Human rights violations have escalated in eastern Ukraine and serious problems are emerging in Crimea, United Nations monitors said in a report released on Friday. The 34-strong U.N. monitoring mission’s report, which covered the period from April 2 to May 6 and which Russia criticized as politically motivated, said police and local authorities in eastern Ukraine connived in illegal acts and the takeover of towns by armed groups, undermining the rule of law. The U.N. findings echoed a statement published on Monday by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, whose experts had identified “a significant number of serious human rights violations” during a visit to Ukraine in March. Ukraine is preparing to hold presidential elections on May 25 and the U.N. monitors said a fair and democratic ballot would be an important factor in helping to calm the situation. But several candidates had reported intimidation and attacks and the monitoring mission said it had concerns about their security. “Those with influence on the armed groups responsible for much of the violence in eastern Ukraine (must) do their utmost to rein in these men who seem bent on tearing the country apart,” U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay said in a statement accompanying the report. The U.N. report also cited a “wave of abductions and unlawful detentions” of journalists, activists, politicians, representatives of international bodies and members of the military. Due to the lack of progress, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Zarif and EU Foreign Policy chief Catherine Ashton did not hold a press conference and no joint statement was issued after the talks, as opposed to previous rounds. Deputy Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi acknowledged the meeting made “no progress” in its ambitious goal of starting to draft an agreement. In that, “we failed,” he told reporters. But while saying he was disappointed, he insisted that the result of the three-day talks that ended Friday represented no more than a setback at this point in continuing attempts to reach a deal.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called out an anti-Israel slur when surrounded by protesters at the site of the mine blast that killed hundreds, local media has reported.
In a video circulated by opposition newspaper Sozcu, Erdogan says, “Why are you running away, Israeli spawn,” using a word in Turkish that is considered a curse. The incident occurred when Erdogan visited the Soma in western Turkey on Wednesday, where the accident took place. At least 282 people died, and a number of miners are still missing. Erdogan has been the subject of much criticism after the tragedy, and his government is seen as having failed to prevent what is the worst industrial accident in Turkey’s history. Meanwhile, Turkish police fired water cannon and tear gas on Friday to disperse a crowd of several thousand protesters in the town of Soma, where close to 300 people died in the country’s worst ever mining disaster this week, a Reuters witness said. People scattered into side streets as the police intervened on a commercial street lined with shops and banks, as well as the offices of the local government and labor union.

Bourses tumbled across Europe, with Milan’s MIB index down 3.6pc, led by a plunge in bank stocks. Madrid’s IBEX was off 2.35pc and France’s CAC fell 1.25pc, as investor dumped shares to buy bonds. France slipped back to zero growth and seems caught in a vicious circle as it keeps cutting spending further to meet its EU deficit targets. The country’s hardline premier, Manuel Valls, has vowed to push through €50bn (£40bn) of spending cuts, with fiscal tightening of 0.8pc of GDP this year. The country’s Observatoire Economique said the outlook was even more troubling than it looked. “France has seen a complete stagnation for the last 10 years, an unprecedented situation since the end of the Second World War,” it said. The body said fiscal cuts of 5pc of GDP from 2010 to 2013 had been premature and self-defeating.

China says its oil rig will continue drilling in contested waters in the South China Sea, despite deadly anti-Beijing riots in Vietnam. Top General Fang Fenghui said Beijing could not “afford to lose an inch” of territory, blaming Hanoi for stirring up trouble in the region. Speaking in the US, he also warned that America’s efforts to increase its focus on Asia were fuelling tensions. A Chinese worker died in an attack on a steel mill in Vietnam on Wednesday. Almost 150 other people were injured as protesters targeted the Taiwanese mill in the central Ha Tinh province. On Tuesday, at least 15 foreign-owned factories were set on fire at industrial parks in Binh Duong province, and hundreds more attacked. No casualties were reported. The protests have been triggered by China’s decision to move its Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig into waters west of the disputed Paracel Islands earlier this month. This triggered confrontations between Vietnamese and Chinese ships as Hanoi sought to block the move.

Scientists leading the fight against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome say the next critical front will be understanding how the virus behaves in people with milder infections, who may be spreading the illness without being aware they have it. Establishing that may be critical to stopping the spread of MERS, which emerged in the Middle East in 2012 and has so far infected more than 500 patients in Saudi Arabia alone. It kills about 30 percent of those who are infected. It is becoming increasingly clear that people can be infected with MERS without developing severe respiratory disease, said Dr David Swerdlow, who heads the MERS response team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “You don’t have to be in the intensive care unit with pneumonia to have a case of MERS,” Swerdlow told Reuters. “We assume they are less infectious (to others), but we don’t know.” The CDC has a team in Saudi Arabia studying whether such mild cases are still capable of spreading the virus. Swerdlow is overseeing their work from Atlanta.

Headline: Marine mammals mysteriously dying in record numbers along West Coast
More sick and dying animals are washing up on the coast of California, with new reports indicating record numbers of young sea lions, seals, and other marine mammals being admitted to care shelters for rehabilitation. The Orange County Register reports that the only facility in the county licensed to care for marine mammals is now at capacity, and that other facilities all along the coastline are being similarly inundated. The normally pudgy and active creatures are increasingly turning up emaciated and dehydrated, a mysterious phenomenon that the Sausalito-based Marine Mammal Center (MMC) has monitored across a 600-mile area of coastline that stretches from Mendocino to San Luis Obispo. After washing ashore, many of these sick marine mammals are too week to even get back in the water, let alone survive on their own. “We thought it was going to be a nice calm year; in the last month it’s just spiked,” stated Melissa Sciacca, the director of development at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) in Laguna Beach.

He said that one cannot “understand a Christian alone” any more than “Jesus Christ alone” can be understood. “Jesus Christ did not fall from the sky like a superhero who comes to save us. No. Jesus Christ has a history. And we can say, and it is true, that God has a history because He wanted to walk with us. And you cannot understand Jesus Christ without His history. So a Christian without history, without a Christian nation, a Christian without the Church is incomprehensible. It is a thing of the laboratory, an artificial thing, a thing that cannot give life,” Francis said.
Jesus Christ alone cannot be understood? I don’t know about you, but that seems to contradict Christ’s statement in John 14:16-17: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Meanwhile, let’s delve into the Catholic teaching of the phrase “the Church” and what that means:
Pope Pius XI writes that “no religion can be true save that which rests upon the revelation of God, a revelation begun from the very first, continued under the Old Law and brought to completion under Jesus Christ himself under the New” and that only “one sole Church was founded by Christ.” He exhorts Protestants to “draw nigh to the Apostolic See, set up in the city that Peter and Paul, princes of the apostles, consecrated by their blood.”
Pope Pius XII asserts in Mystici Corporis Christi that they “walk in the path of dangerous error who believe that they can accept Christ as the head of the Church while not adhering loyally to his vicar on earth.
Pope Paul VI stated in his Credo that “we believe in one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church, built by Jesus Christ on that rock which is Peter,” The belief is reiterated in the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium): “This Church, constituted and organized as a society in the present world, subsists (subsistit in) the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the bishops in communion with him.” And by the way- most Orthodox churches embrace this teaching also.
“Second–a competent religious guide must be clear and intelligible to all, so that everyone may fully understand the true meaning of the instructions it contains. Is the Bible a book intelligible to all? Far from it; it is full of obscurities and difficulties not only for the illiterate, but even for the learned.” (The Faith of Our Fathers, p. 94 on PDF version)

Habila Adamu, 40, was so badly wounded in the attack that he said goodbye to his wife as blood poured from a gaping wound. The father-of-one said the April 15 capture by Boko Haram of more than 200 girls from a boarding school brought back painful memories of the night he was shot and beaten in his home. “When I heard about those girls I started to pray,” Adamu told NBC News on Tuesday. “Boko Haram have no mercy. All they want to do is drive the Christian community out of northern Nigeria and they won’t stop until they do it.” The businessman initially thought they were soldiers on patrol near his home one night in November 2012. “But when I saw their robes and AK-47 rifles I knew they were not from the army,” he said. “They told me they were there to do the work of Allah.” With his wife Vivian and son David, now aged seven, looking on, four men forced their way indoors and asked whether he was a member of the police force or army. He told them he was not. “Then they asked me whether I would convert to Islam and when I refused they asked whether I was prepared to die as a Christian. My wife was crying but I could not deny Christ. I felt powerful, unafraid, I don’t know why.” Before he could refuse a second time, a bullet pierced his neck. “I fell on the ground,” Adamu said. “They thought I was dead because they stomped on me twice and shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ or ‘God is great.’”

The technology is already being rolled out in Poland, where 1,730 cash machines will this year be installed with readers, negating the need for a debit card and Pin. Developed by Hitachi, the Japanese electronics firm, the machines read the patterns of the veins just below the surface of the skin on your finger using infra-red sensors. The light is partially absorbed by haemoglobin in the veins to capture a unique finger vein pattern profile, which is matched to a profile. The technology is used by Japanese banks and also in Turkey, offering “groundbreaking levels of accuracy and speed of authentication”, Hitachi said, which in theory tightens security.

Luke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword. Luke 21:9: wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions) Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)

Headline: Troops called in as police strike and violence mounts in World Cup city
Brazilian troops were drafted in to reinforce security in a World Cup host city after a military police went on strike less than a month before the country holds the event. Seven murders were reported in seven hours, a spike in deaths, during industrial action by police in Recife, Pernambuco, which will host five games including US’ group match against Germany. The strike was the most serious of a series of walk-outs that took place this week as key services threatened to stop working during the World Cup in protest at the levels of public spending on the competition. On Friday, the army and National Guard remained in place on the streets of Recife even after 20,000 police officers returned to work after demonstrating over pay. “We will work in cooperation with the reinforcements, together with the Brazilian Army and the National Guard,” said Colonel Carlos Pereira, a military police commander.

Headline: 10 Dead, 70 Hurt In Twin Kenya Bombings
Kenyan officials say at least 10 people died and 70 others were wounded Friday in two explosions targeting a minibus and a busy market in the capital city, Nairobi. The attacks came days after the U.S. and British governments issued travel advisories regarding potential terrorist attacks in the country. Investigators said improvised explosive devises were used to target the attacks. The minibus was spattered with blood, its windows and tires blown out. A second bomb exploded nearby, also near a market best known for second-hand clothing.
“I saw the explosion. People were running in all directions,” Reuters quoted a female witness as saying. “I know some of the people who died.” Nairobi Police Chief Benson Kibui said police, acting on tips from the public, had detained a bombing suspect. Security officials said the suspect is a Kenyan national. In a statement Friday, the U.S. embassy in Nairobi warned its citizens to increase their personal security in light of Kenya’s continuing terror threats and violent crime. “Terrorist acts can include suicide operations, bombings – to include car bombings – kidnappings, attacks on civil aviation, and attacks on maritime vessels in or near Kenyan ports,” the statement read in part.

Headline: Thousands flee in new Central African Republic fighting
Over 23,000 people were displaced by renewed fighting in the Central African Republic in the past month, the U.N. Refugee Agency reported Friday. Spokesman Adrian Edwards said children are recruited as soldiers, as well as cooks, porters and guards, and as many as 6,000 have been forced into rebel groups in the country. Humanitarian organizations secured the release of over 1,000 children from military groups in 2013. Of the displaced people, Edwards said they are mainly “Christians, mainly women and children. Many of the men are hiding due to fear of attacks by armed groups.” “Every single child we spoke to said they wanted to leave the armed group and return to school. We cannot fail them,” said Souleymane Diabete, UNICEF Representative in the Central African Republic. The fighting has followed a 2012 rebel-led coup of the country, with numerous human rights abuses reported, and a need for humanitarian aid for 2.2 million people.

Headline: Bomb blast injures 16 in north Pakistan
At least 16 people have been injured in an explosion outside a restaurant in the northern Pakistani city of Rawalpindi, security sources say. The powerful blast late Thursday had been the result of a bomb planted on a motorcycle, police official Abdul Waheed said Friday. Bomb disposal experts were called in to determine whether the device was timed or detonated by remote-control, Waheed said. A second police official confirmed the blast, adding that the condition of one of the injured was critical. No group has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack.

Vietnam’s prime minister sent a text message to millions of citizens urging them to act in defense of the country’s sovereignty following China’s deployment of on oil rig in disputed waters, but said that “bad elements” shouldn’t be allowed to engage in violence. The message, sent late Thursday and into Friday, didn’t directly condemn the riots that have broken out this week following China’s decision to deploy the rig off the coast of central Vietnam on May 1. Vietnamese patrol ships sent to try and disrupt the rig are currently locked into a tense standoff with Chinese ships guarding it.
