Headline: “Jund al-Islam” in Sinai Releases Video of Preparing Rocket to Attack Israel

Two policemen were lightly hurt by rocks and bottles hurled by dozens of Arabs Sunday, during a riot at Jerusalem’s Shechem Gate, aka the Damascus Gate. Police dispersed the riot and arrested two Arabs on suspicion that they threw the rocks that struck the policemen. Meanwhile, Haaretz reported that there were some clashes between Jews on the Rikudegalim Flag Dance Parade, and local Arabs. Police “stopped a brawl between Jews and Palestinians and arrested one Palestinian,” the left wing paper said. The Flag Dance Parade, which is held annually on Jerusalem Day, will pas through the Shechem Gate on its way to the Western Wall (The Kotel), where a mass thanksgiving service will be held to celebrate 48 years since the reunification of Jerusalem. The organizers of the parade called on the tens of thousands of people expected to take part in it not to provoke the Arabs of the Old City. High Court judges approved the parade’s path, which passes through the Old City, but stipulated that whoever calls out “racist” slogans during the march will be arrested and charged.

Headline: Turkey to Help Hamas Rebuild 19 Destroyed ‘Missile Mosques’

Turkey has offered money to Hamas to re-build 19 mosques that were used to store or launch missiles on Israel before the IDF destroyed them in last summer’s Operation Protective Edge, Reshet Bet (Voice of Israel) radio reported Monday morning. Mehmet Gormez, president of Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs, is visiting Gaza for the first time in what may be a warm-up for a long-promised visit by Turkish President Recep Erdoğan Gormez said everything Hamas and condemned Israel for “violating human rights” in Gaza by attacking missile-launching sites, many of which were located in mosques, schools, cemeteries and U.N.-financed buildings.

Headline: Hezbollah, Syrian army kill 10 militants in fresh Qalamoun clashes

Iran is ‘proud’ of the achievements of Hezbollah and the Syrian army in a series of recent battles in Qalamoun, an adviser close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated Monday. “We feel very proud as we have been watching in the last few days the new victories that the Lebanese resistance and Syrian army are achieving in Qalamoun,” Ali Akbar Velayati said, according to the Lebanese Daily Star. “This contributes to strengthening the axis of resistance not only in Lebanon and Syria, but in the whole region and worldwide.” Velayati arrived in Lebanon on Sunday and was welcomed by Hezbollah MPs. Hezbollah and Syrian forces killed 20 Al-Nusra terrorists last week, after seizing significant territory in and around Qalamoun. The Qalamoun region, which lies north of Damascus and runs along the Lebanese border. Earlier this month, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed to oust rebels from the Qalamoun region, saying the situation “needs radical treatment” but without saying when the assault would start.

Headline: Army pounds militant positions on Arsal’s outskirts

The Lebanese Army pounded militant positions on the outskirts of the northeastern town of Arsal Sunday, killing and wounding a number of them, security sources said. A security source said the Army shelled the militants’ positions in Al-Masyada and Dahr al-Jabar on Arsal’s outskirts with artillery and rockets, killing and wounding of a number of militants. The casualties were taken to field hospitals in the area of Al-Malahi on Arsal’s outskirts.  Later Sunday, local TV stations reported that the Army opened fire on militants in Wadi Hmaid, on the northern entrance to Arsal, foiling their attempts to infiltrate the town and inflicting a number of casualties. The Army’s pre-emptive strikes come amid growing fears that Islamist militants withdrawing from Syria’s Qalamoun region following major military successes by Hezbollah and the Syrian army would regroup on the outskirts of Arsal.

Saudi-ArabiaSaudi Arabia

Headline: Saudis to Buy Nukes from Pakistan – US Officials

Saudi Arabia is trying to purchase nuclear weapons from Pakistan, according to senior US officials. Saudi Arabia has expressed concerns over the way nuclear negotiations with Iran are being run. It has said that it fears the final agreement would allow Iran the capability of developing nuclear weapons, either by ignoring its obligations or by waiting a few years until the terms are over. Should that happen, Riyadh would want its own nuclear weapons. The Sunday Times revealed that a senior US official has said that he believes that Saudi Arabia is now beginning to build up a nuclear arsenal, first by purchasing pre-made weapons: “There has been a longstanding agreement in place with the Pakistanis and the House of Saud has now made the strategic decision to move forward.” However, the official also stated that the US does not believe that “any actual weaponry has been transferred yet.” Analysts fear that, should both Iran and Saudi Arabia develop nuclear programs, other regional countries such as Turkey and Egypt would do so as well.

Headline: Backlash in Egypt: Judges killed in Sinai hours after Morsi sentence

Egypt executed six men Sunday convicted by a military court over a gunfight last year at a suspected bomb factory, as explosives planted outside of courthouses wounded two people following the death sentence given to ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. The six executed men were convicted of killing two military officers in an hourlong battle with police, military and special forces during a raid north of Cairo in March 2014. Egypt has been struggling to contain violence by militants, but the scattered attacks have evolved into a full-fledged insurgency following Morsi’s July 2013 ouster by the military. A court sentenced Morsi and over 100 others to death Saturday over a mass prison break during the 2011 uprising that ousted longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Just after Morsi’s sentencing, suspected Islamic militants gunned down three judges Saturday in the Sinai Peninsula, officials said. On Sunday, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in its daily English language audio bulletin, claiming it killed six judges. There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy in numbers in the bulletin, which was posted by the SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S. firm that monitors jihadis. Meanwhile, officials said a bomb exploded late Saturday outside the main courthouse in the southern city of Assiut, seriously wounding a police officer. Early Sunday, a bomb wounded a young girl near a courthouse in the Mediterranean city of Port Said, they said.

Headline: Turkey to take Egypt’s Morsi verdict to UN

Turkey will take to the UN Human Rights Commission the verdict of death sentences on former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and 106 supporters of his Muslim Brotherhood, Turkish Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Monday. “We are continuing our consultations firstly with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Gulf countries. We are reviewing current mechanisms for international initiatives. We plan to start necessary initiatives soon, to at the UN Human Rights Committee at first hand,” Kalin told reporters in a press conference. “We call on the Egyptian administration to reverse the sentence,” Kalin said. Those sentences and carrying them out will push the Middle East into further chaos, the spokesperson said, calling on international community to speak out more strongly against the verdicts. Egypt’s ousted Islamist president Morsi and other 106 defendants were ordered by a court on Saturday to face the death penalty for their role in a mass jailbreak during the 2011 uprising. Morsi was also accused of escaping prison with the assistance of domestic and foreign militants during the Jan. 25 uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Turkish President Recep Erdogan on Saturday condemned Egypt for sentencing Morsi to death.

At least 12 civilians have been killed in Yemen’s southern city of Taiz as Houthi fighters continued their offensive on the penultimate day of a fragile humanitarian ceasefire. Government officials said on Saturday that another 51 people were wounded after the rebels shelled several neighbourhoods in the city’s Hawd Al Shraf and Shamasi districts. Some 26 fighters loyal to the Houthis and former president Ali Abdullah Saleh and 14 loyalists of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi were also killed. Meanwhile, in the southern province of Ad-Dali’, five Houthis were killed overnight when their convoy was ambushed; and in the coastal city of Aden, heavy artillery, including tank shells, fell on the city’s northern sector and west.

Syria Headline:  ISIS fires barrage of rockets at Palmyra

Jihadists from the Islamic State (IS) group seized control of the northern part of Syria’s ancient desert city of Palmyra on Saturday after fierce clashes with government forces, a monitoring group said. “IS advanced and took control of most of northern Palmyra, and there are fierce clashes happening now,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. He said 13 jihadist fighters were killed in ongoing clashes near the Islamic citadel in the city’s west. Abdel Rahman had no details on regime casualties. Most of Palmyra’s renowned ruins, including colonnaded streets and elaborately decorated tombs, lie to the southwest of the city. IS began its offensive on Palmyra on Wednesday and inched closer to the ancient metropolis on Thursday and Friday, executing at least 49 civilians over those two days according to the Observatory. If Palmyra falls, IS would expand its control from Syria’s east and north to the country’s heartland.

Idlib

Syria Headline:    Syrian insurgents battle army around military base in Idlib

Syria Headline:    Syrian army withdraws from military camp under rebels’ fire in Idlib

Heavy clashes between Syria’s army and insurgents erupted around a military base south of Idlib city on Monday as part of a wider battle for control of the northwestern province, Syrian state television and a group monitoring the war said. The Mastouma base is one of the last major army strongholds in a province controlled by a range of insurgent groups including al Qaeda’s Syrian wing, the Nusra Front, and the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham movement, fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. Army units “inflicted great losses” on armed groups in battles to the north and around Mastouma, Syrian state television reported, citing a military source. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said most of the troops positioned in Idlib city were now in Mastouma after insurgents took over the provincial capital in March. The base is used for launching air raids in the province. There were reports of casualties in the battles, it said, without giving details. The Syrian air force also bombarded the area in a series of raids, it added.
***Of note here: ISIS has neither been defeated nor relegated entirely to the defensive in Syria despite a string of losses to Kurdish forces assisted by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes. Instead, ISIS has launched two major offensives targeting Syrian military positions in central and eastern Syria since May 6, 2015, likely taking advantage of the Assad regime’s preoccupation with recent JN and rebel advances in Idlib Province. A consolidation of these gains would leave ISIS in position to contest and potentially seize the most important remaining military installations in eastern Syria, eliminating any potential roadblocks to further ISIS expansion into the Syrian central corridor.

Iraq Headline: Iraqi City of Ramadi Falls to Islamic State Group

The IS militants launched a series of attacks in Ramadi since Thursday night and managed to seize the district Jamiyah and Albu Alwan in the city. On Friday, the militants expanded in the city and took control of the government compound in central Ramadi. The group believed to have captured a number of the security members and government-backed tribal fighters and executed them after they seized the government compound, a local security source said on Friday. Also, IS militants and suicide car bombers attacked an army base near the militant-seized city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, leaving at least 35 soldiers and allied militias killed and some 20 others wounded. The Islamic State (IS) militant group on Saturday continued attacks against the Iraqi security forces in the country’s western province of Anbar, while reinforcement troops were dispatched to prevent the militants’ progress in the province, provincial security sources said.

Iraq Headline: Ramadi’s fall opens ISIS road to Baghdad. Jordan warns US air strikes won’t stop the terrorists’ advance

Iraq Headline: Shi’ite forces move in on Iraqi city taken by Islamic State

Jordan’s King Abdullah has warned the Obama administration in an urgent message that US air strikes alone won’t stop the Islamic State’s advances in Iraq and Syria and, what is more, they leave his kingdom next door exposed to the Islamist peril. ISIS would at present have no difficulty in invading southern Jordan, where the army is thin on the ground, and seizing local towns and villages whose inhabitants are already sympathetic to the extremist group. The bulk of the Jordanian army is concentrated in the north on the Syrian border. Even a limited Islamist incursion in the south would also pose a threat to northern Saudi Arabia, the king pointed out. Abdullah offered the view that the US Delta Special Forces operation in eastern Syria Saturday was designed less to be an effective assault on ISIS’s core strength and more as a pallliative to minimize the Islamist peril facing Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the Gulf emirates. debkafile’s Washington sources report that US officials refused to heed Abdullah’s warning and tried to play it down, in the same way as Secretary John Kerry tried Monday, May 18, to de-emphasize to the ISIS conquest of Ramadi, the capital of Iraq’s largest province. At a news conference in Seoul, Kerry dismissed the Islamists’ feat as a “target of opportunity” and expressed confidence that, in the coming days, the loss “can be reversed.” The Secretary of State’s words were unlikely to scare the Islamists, who had caused more than 500 deaths in the battle for the town and witnessed panicky Iraqi soldiers fleeing Ramadi in Humvees and tanks. Baghdad, only 110 km southeast of Ramadi, has more reason to be frightened, in the absence of any sizeable Iraqi military strength in the area for standing in the enemy’s path to the capital. The Baghdad government tried announcing that substantial military reinforcements had been ordered to set out and halt the Islamists’ advance. This was just whistling in the dark. In the last two days, the remnants of the Iraqi army have gone to pieces – just like in the early days of the ISIS offensive, when the troops fled Mosul and Falujah. They are running away from any possible engagement with the Islamist enemy.

Headline: Key ISIS Leader Abu Sayyaf Killed As Terror Group’s Influence Spreads

Headline: US Special Ops raid killing five ISIS chiefs had to be coordinated with Syria and Russia

U.S. special forces killed a senior ISIS commander, Abu Sayyaf, during a daring and rare raid deep inside Syria overnight in which they also captured the terror leader’s wife and rescued an enslaved Yezidi woman, the Pentagon said Saturday. Sayyaf was very involved in ISIS military operations and helped direct the terror organization’s illicit oil, gas and financial operations, said U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter. The overnight mission was the first known strike by American forces inside Syria with the exception of the United States’ failed attempt to rescue hostages last year. During Sayyaf’s reign, an ever-increasing number of militant groups in the world’s most turbulent places have sworn allegiance to ISIS. The groups, many of whom have long fought insurgencies against government forces in their countries, have adopted ISIS propaganda tactics, including beheadings and executions.

Headline:  Arab separatists attack Iran government office

An armed separatist group in southwestern Iran attacked a government office over the weekend in the latest security incident to rock the ethnically Arab-populated Ahvaz region. The Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz (ASMLA) issued a statement Sunday claiming responsibility for the armed operation in Susangerd, saying it had killed two security officers. The group said its Moheiddin Al Nasser Martyr Brigades attacked a governorate administrative office at 11:30 p.m. Saturday night with “hand-made grenades” and opened fire on the security forces guarding the building with light arms. “As a result of the heroic operation two members of the Persian security forces were killed while three others were injured and one car belonging to the security forces was burned,” the statement said. Al-Arabiya television, in turn, cited an anonymous activist in the region as saying that two guards were injured in the strike, without any mention of deaths. Iranian press outlets covered the attack, with pro-government Rahyab News reporting that “unidentified people” had set the building alight before opening fire on it after which they fled the scene. The article made no mention of ASMLA or Arab separatists active in the region which was hit by a number of protests in March.

A suicide bomb attack near the entrance of the international airport in the Afghan capital Kabul has killed three people, including a British citizen. The attack took place close to the area used by military vehicles and targeted a European police training mission vehicle. Two Afghan teenage girls, described as bystanders, died in the blast, while at least 18 people were injured. The Taliban said it carried out the attack in a statement emailed to media. The British victim has not been named but UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he was a security contractor. Mr Hammond said he “strongly condemned (the Taliban’s) cowardly actions”. A spokeswoman for the EU’s police mission (Eupol), Sari Haukka-Konu, said one non-mission member who had been travelling in the Eupol vehicle had been killed. The attack is the second major incident in Kabul within a week. A Taliban gun attack on a hotel in the city on Thursday killed 14 people, most of them foreigners.

Headline:    South Sudan rebels say killed “many” government soldiers

South Sudanese rebels killed “many” government soldiers in three days of fighting in Malakal, the capital of oil-producing Upper Nile State, a rebel military spokesman said on Monday. The rebel forces brought down a government helicopter gunship that had been sent to attack rebel positions in the town on Sunday, Lony Ngundeng told Reuters. “The government forces have lost many soldiers,” he said. Government spokesmen were not immediately available to comment. The world’s newest state, which declared independence from Sudan in 2011, was plunged into conflict nearly 18 months ago between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and rebels allied with his former deputy, Riek Machar. Several ceasefires have been agreed and broken and each side accuses the other of violating one announced in early February. The United Nations Security Council also condemned the renewed fighting. “The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the repeated violations of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement accepted and signed by the Republic of South Sudan and the SPLM/A (in Opposition) on 23 January 2014,” it said in a statement on Sunday.

Headline: Tripoli forces clash with IS militants in Libya’s Sirte

Fierce clashes erupted again on Monday in the central Libyan city of Sirte between Islamic State (IS) militants and forces loyal to the Tripoli-based government. Mohamed Zadma, who is leading the security operation in Sirte, told Anadolu Agency that his forces had been “hunting down” IS militants near a number of government buildings in the city. Zadma said his forces had killed an as-yet-unspecified number of IS militants during the confrontations. A local resident said IS militants were using artillery in the fighting, damaging residential buildings near IS-controlled areas. Violent clashes broke out last week between the two camps after IS militants attacked sites belonging to Zadma’s forces in western Sirte. Libya has remained in a state of turmoil since a bloody uprising ended the decades-long rule of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in late 2011.

Headline: Libyan group detains 170 Tunisians over commander’s arrest

An armed group allied to the Libya Dawn forces controlling Tripoli has detained 170 Tunisians in the Libyan capital since Saturday after Tunis arrested one of its commanders, Tunisian officials said on Monday. Brahim Rezgui, Tunisian consul in Tripoli, told a Tunis radio station the group demanded the immediate release of the Libya Dawn commander, whom he did not name. Libyan officials in Tripoli did not immediately respond to requests for comment. “An armed group belonging to Libya Dawn detained 170 Tunisians since Saturday after a leading figure in this group was arrested in Tunisia last week,” a Tunisian foreign ministry official told TAP state news agency. Relations between the North African neighbours have become increasingly tense, with Tunisia’s government worried about spillover from the chaos that continues to plague Libya four years after strongman Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown. Land crossings have been closed several times. Tunisia shut its airspace again last month to Libyan aircraft, which angered the Tripoli authorities. Islamist militants in Libya killed two Tunisian journalists kidnapped there last year, Libyan officials said.

Headline: Turkey twin blasts target pro-Kurdish HDP party

Seven people were hurt in explosions at two party offices in southern Turkey, raising tensions in the run-up to next month’s general election. The blasts targeted the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) in Adana and Mersin. The government condemned the attacks, but party officials accused ministers of inciting hatred against the HDP. The pro-Kurdish party is trying to secure the 10% of votes needed to enter parliament in the 7 June election. The ruling AK party is expected to win the vote. Although it is no longer led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan it still commands widespread support. Mr Erdogan is seeking a mandate to help push through constitutional change and new executive powers. Six people were hurt, three seriously, at the HDP’s offices in Adana. Reports said a bouquet of flowers had just been delivered to the building, whose windows were blown out in the blast. “The bomb that caused the explosion was a time bomb set to go off as we were finishing our daily briefing with all our candidates and senior officers,” said party candidate Tugay Bek. “The strength of the bomb and the time it went off suggests that they aimed to kill as many people as possible.”

nation against nation 3CooltextprophecysignLuke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword.  Luke 21:9: wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions)   Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)

Headline: Nigerian child suicide bomber kills several at crowded bus station

A young girl on Saturday carried out a suicide attack at a bus station in Damaturu in northeastern Nigeria, killing seven people and injuring 31, witnesses and the local hospital said. “A girl aged about 12 detonated an explosive under her clothes as she approached the station’s perimeter fence,” said witness Danbaba Nguru. The head of the local Sani Abacha hospital, doctor Garba Fika, said six bodies and 32 injured had arrived there, with one person dying after being admitted. The Damaturu bus station has been repeatedly targeted in a string of previous suicide attacks. “I was in the station when I saw the young girl arrive,” said bus driver Musbahu Lawan. “I think she noticed the guards checking people at the gates and she decided to detonate the explosives in the middle of the crowd outside the gates.” Nguru added: “The road leading to the gates is always full of small traders … I was lucky not to have been hit.” No claim of responsibility for the attack has been made but Islamist group Boko Haram has frequently used young girls to carry out suicide attacks. Meanwhile, Boko Haram recaptured the strategic town of Marte in northeastern Nigeria’s restive Borno state, a regional official said early on Saturday. “It is sad as we have been made to understand that Marte has today completely fallen under the control of the insurgents, which to us is a very huge setback,” said Alhaji Zannah Mustapha, vice governor of the Borno state.

Headline: Burundi president warns against Al-Shabab threat

Headline: Protests Resume in Burundi Capital After Failed Coup

Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza on Sunday made his first official appearance since an attempted coup, looking relaxed and appearing confident that he was in full control of the central African nation. Nkurunziza pointedly ignored the coup attempt and spoke only about reported threats from Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-linked Shabab militants, who have warned of mounting attacks against Burundi and other states that contribute troops to the African Union force in Somalia. “W e have taken measures against Al-Shabab. We take this threat seriously,” the president said. Nkurunziza has been facing weeks of violent and deadly street protests over his controversial bid to stand for a third consecutive term in office. On Wednesday a group of top generals announced they were overthrowing him while he was on a visit to neighboring Tanzania. But on Friday the coup leaders admitted defeat, having failed to capture the state broadcaster after fierce fighting with loyalist troops. Seventeen alleged plotters appeared in court on Saturday while the alleged ringleader is still said to be on the run.

Headline: Thousands rally to demand resignation of Macedonia’s Prime Minister

Headline: 30,000 supporters of Macedonian PM stage counter-rally in Skopje

The atmosphere was festive, but the undertones gravely serious as thousands of protesters gathered in Macedonia’s capital demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikola  Gruevski. The protesters — who paraded through Skopje waving Macedonia’s vibrant red and yellow flag — seek Gruevski’s ouster over a wiretapping scandal that the opposition claims takes government abuse to new levels. Those alleged abuses include instances of “…financial and electoral fraud, mass electronic surveillance, framing of political opponents for crimes and even murder,” according to Foreign Affairs, a magazine published by the Council on Foreign Relations. While Gruevski denies the allegations, the scandal has plunged the Balkan country into its worst political crisis since the threat of civil war in 2001. Gruevski claims most of the wiretapped recordings were made by an unnamed foreign intelligence service in an effort to bring his government down. Social Democrat leader Zoran Zaev, who called for Sunday’s demonstrations, has accused the government of inciting ethnic conflict. In early May the Gruevski government indicted Zaev on charges of wiretapping and anti-government activities, according to the New York Times. Zaev has periodically been releasing leaked transcripts of what he claims are thousands of recordings made by the government, detailing instances of alleged corruption. He was indicted shortly before announcing plans for Sunday’s massive protest in Skopje.

Headline: Greece warned of cash shortage ahead of deadline: report

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had warned foreign officials that Athens would not be able to pay the 750 million euros ($845 million) due this month to the International Monetary Fund, Greek newspapers said Sunday. The reports came less than a week after Athens admitted that it tapped into an emergency account to pay back the loan, in order to avoid crashing out of the eurozone. On May 8, Tsipras wrote to European Commission, IMF and European Central Bank officials to warn them that Greece would be unable to meet its May 12 deadline, unless its creditors agreed to release a final 7.2-billion-euro ($8.2-billion) tranche of its bailout, Kathimerini daily said, citing European officials. The newspaper also said Tsipras contacted US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. But Kathimerini said Greece’s creditors saw the warning as a “possible bluff”. Greece won some support in the latest round of debt talks as it battles to keep itself solvent, but eurozone finance ministers have demanded more key reforms before they agree to release the funds. Scrambling to pay its debt, the Greek government ended up drawing 660 million euros ($750 million) from a special account held at the IMF, and scraping togeth er the rest of the sum just in time. Tsipras also wanted 1.9 billion euros ($2.2 billion) in profits made by the ECB from Greek bonds purchased in 2010, and 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion) Athens claims it unduly paid to the European Financial Stability Facility. Confirming the reports, Vima weekly said the Greek government warned it did not have the money to pay the IMF back.

Headline:  Egg, Turkey Meat Prices Begin to Rise as Bird Flu Spreads

Prices for eggs and turkey meat are rising as an outbreak of bird flu in the Midwest claims an increasing number of chickens and turkeys. Market experts say grocery stores and wholesalers are trying to stock up on eggs, but there’s no need to worry about having enough turkeys for Thanksgiving. The cost of a carton of large eggs in the Midwest has jumped nearly 17 percent to $1.39 a dozen from $1.19 since mid-April when the virus began appearing in Iowa’s chicken flocks and farmers culled their flocks to contain any spread. Neighboring Nebraska reported its first case of bird flu Tuesday, affecting 1.7 million chickens at an egg farm in Dixon County. A much bigger increase has emerged in the eggs used as ingredients in processed products such as cake mix and mayonnaise, which account for the majority of what Iowa produces. Those eggs have jumped 63 percent to $1.03 a dozen from 63 cents in the last three weeks, said Rick Brown, senior vice president of Urner Barry, a commodity market analysis firm. Turkey prices, which had been expected to fall this year, are up slightly as the bird flu claimed about 5.6 million turkeys nationwide so far. About 238 million turkeys were raised in the U.S. last year. The price of fresh boneless and skinless tom breast meat primarily used for deli meat has risen 10 percent since mid-April to $3.37 a pound, a USDA report said Friday. Frozen hens in the 8- to 16-pound range, those often used for home roasting, were up about 3 percent to $1.06 a pound. Egg supplies are falling short of demand, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has indicated, and Brown said egg buyers such as grocery stores and wholesalers are trying to stock up for fear that another large farm with millions of chickens will be stricken — causing prices to spike higher. “We’re starting to see a little bit of that demand increase, and the sellers are reluctant to give clients too much more than they normally have because they know what’s going on and they don’t want to be caught short either,” he said. The number of Iowa chickens lost exceeds 26 million, the vast majority of which lay eggs for food use. That’s about 41 percent of the leading egg state’s layers and about 8 percent of the nation’s laying hens. That many chickens would lay more than 500 million table eggs a month. For comparison, Iowa chickens laid 1.4 billion table eggs in March, before the disease struck. U.S. egg production for March stood at 7.42 billion table eggs.

Headline:   Tornadoes, strong storms damage homes across Midwest

A powerful storm system stretched from Texas to Minnesota on Sunday, bringing heavy rains and the possibility of flash flooding and more severe weather. Flash floods could happen in parts of the country that saw damaging tornadoes and strong winds Saturday and early Sunday, according to Bill Bunting, chief of operations for the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. There were no immediate reports of any deaths or injuries. “We are seeing pockets of damaging winds from Missouri south to northeast Oklahoma,” Bunting said early Sunday, noting the winds reached up to 60 mph. Later Sunday, scattered severe storms are expected to develop in eastern Minnesota, western Wisconsin and parts of Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas. The system is the result of a cold front extending from the north central Plains into the southern Plains that pushed up behind warm, moist air. “It’s a very strong upper level disturbance,” Bunting said, noting it stretched at one point nearly to the U.S. border with Mexico. “It’s as extensive an area as we’ve seen this year.”
