Headline:  Report: Explosion Rocks Hamas Security Headquarters

Headline: “Supporters of the Islamic State in Jerusalem” Threatens Hamas

Residents of Gaza report that an explosion occurred on Monday at the Hamas general security headquarters. According to the reports, which were cited by Yedioth Aharonoth, the blast was the work of Salafists who are demanding the release of several Salafist prisoners being held by Hamas. The Salafist group Salafist Trend on Saturday accused Hamas of torturing the jailed Salafists, and of monitoring and cracking down on other members of the group, threatening Hamas that they must release the prisoners or face consequences. “Once again we ask the wise people of Gaza to stop the ongoing Hamas criminality and abusive detention of our brothers before it’s too late,” read the Salafist statement. According to the report Monday, a group of activists published an announcement before the blast, stating “we give Hamas 72 hours to release all the prisoners.” It remains unclear if the group of activists referred to in the report is the same Salafist Trend group. Last month Hamas arrested Salafists who it claimed contacted Islamic State (ISIS), which has been growing a presence in Gaza, Judea and Samaria.

Headline: Mortar Strike in Golan Heights Injures UN Soldiers

Two UN peacekeepers were wounded on Monday when mortar shells fired from Syria hit their base in the Israeli-held sector of the Golan Heights, an army spokesman said. “Mortar shells hit the Golan in Ein Zivan and in the Zivanit UNDOF base. Two UN peacekeeping soldiers were evacuated to Israel for medical care,” Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner wrote on his official Twitter account. Israel public radio said they were lightly wounded in the incident. The mortar strike took place near Quneitra in Syria, where heavy fighting has been taking place between rival rebel forces. Shortly after the incident, the IDF stated the mortar was in fact the result of “spillover” from the Syrian conflict, and not deliberately fired at Israel. Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told AFP that fighting has been taking place since last week between rebel groups in an area close to Syria’s ceasefire line with Israel. “There is still infighting going on among rebel groups in Qahtaniya near the ceasefire line with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. They’re exchanging shellfire,” he said.

Headline: Hamas ‘Nakba’ Rally at Terror Base on Israeli Border

The “refugee” department of the Hamas terrorist movement will on Tuesday at 5 p.m. hold a massive rally marking 67 years to the “Nakba” – the “catastrophe” of the establishment of modern Israel, and the inability of the Arab countries to destroy the fledgling renascent Jewish state. The massive rally is to be held at the “Palestine” terrorist training site located in Beit Lahiya adjacent to the border between Gaza and Israel in the northern part of Gaza. Abdallah Hasuna, director of the “refugee” department which is tasked with handling descendants of the Arab residents of Israel who left during the 1948 War of Independence, noted this would be the first time a massive event was held at a base associated with Hamas’s “military wing,” the Al-Qassam Brigades. Hasuna said by holding the mass rally at the terrorist base there was a message emphasizing the path of the “struggle of the Palestinian people.”

Headline: Tensions brew in Jordan over Muslim Brotherhood rift

Jordan’s authorization of a breakaway wing of the Muslim Brotherhood has sent tensions soaring between the decades-old organisation and the government, accused of exploiting the rift to weaken the kingdom’s main opposition force. In early March, the government gave its consent to the formation of the splinter Brotherhood group, led by a former head of the movement. The offshoot aims to severe ties with the Brotherhood’s arm in Egypt, where hundreds of supporters have been killed and thousands detained since Islamist president Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the army in 2013. Analysts say Jordan’s recognition of the new group — known as the Muslim Brotherhood Association — risks fanning discontent among the traditional opposition power base at a time when the kingdom is battling jihadists in neighbouring Iraq and Syria.

Headline: Nusra-led militants pound Hezbollah, Syria army posts near Lebanon border

Islamist rebels led by Al Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate launched a preemptive strike Monday on pro-regime forces in a mountainous area near the Lebanese border, setting off fierce clashes, a monitor said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Al Nusra Front and other groups attacked positions belonging to the regime and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which backs the government, in the Qalamoun region. “Violent clashes are ongoing since this morning between Hezbollah, regime troops and pro-regime militiamen on one side and Islamist factions and Al Nusra on the other side,” the group said. Last year, government forces backed by the Shia Islamist Hezbollah movement managed to expel rebels from most of Qalamoun, which lies north of Damascus and runs along the Lebanese border. But opposition fighters remain entrenched in the mountainous area along the border with Lebanon, and have launched attacks from there. A source close to Al Nusra confirmed the fighting underway in the region. “This is the zero hour and the battle in the region has begun,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Headline:  Yemen: Saudi Arabia used cluster bombs, rights groups says

The Saudi-led coalition carrying out air strikes in Yemen has used US-supplied cluster bombs banned by much of the world, a rights group has said. Human Rights Watch (HRW) said it had evidence that the bombs were used at least twice against Houthi rebels. There were no reports of casualties. Cluster bombs spread small bombs over a wide area and can leave unexploded munitions buried in the ground. They are banned under a treaty signed by 116 countries, but not Saudi Arabia. The US and the other countries in Saudi Arabia’s military coalition are not signatories of the 2008 treaty either. The US does however bar the sale of the weapons to countries that use them in civilian areas. HRW, which is based in the US, said one of the alleged cluster bomb strikes occurred in the al-Amar area of al-Safraa.

Headline: Saudi-led alliance mulls partial truces in Yemen

A Saudi-led Arab alliance conducting air strikes against Houthi fighters in Yemen is considering calling truces in specific areas in Yemen to allow humanitarian supplies to reach the country, the Saudi foreign minister said on Monday. Adel al-Jubeir also said Saudi Arabia might host a center to coordinate delivery of humanitarian supplies. The United Nations says the humanitarian situation in Yemen has grown desperate after weeks of air strikes. “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is holding consultations with members of the alliance in defense of legitimacy in Yemen and all countries that support it, to create specific areas inside Yemen to deliver humanitarian supplies, where all aerial operations will stop at specific times to allow these supplies in, as stipulated by UN Security Council resolution 2216,” Jubeir said in a statement.

Headline: Hundreds protest against Al-Qaeda control of Yemen city

Hundreds of residents have protested against Al-Qaeda controlling Mukalla, the capital of southeast Yemen’s Hadramawt province, a month after jihadis overran the city, witnesses said Monday. “Batarfi out out, Hadramawt wants freedom,” they chanted late on Sunday, referring to Khalid Batarfi, a senior Al-Qaeda figure who has reportedly been named the “emir of Mukalla.” Batarfi was among more than 300 prisoners who escaped from a Mukalla jail stormed by militants as Al-Qaeda overran the city last month. Sunday’s protest erupted after militants stormed a mosque following evening prayers and one pointed a gun at the imam and threatened to kill him for criticizing Al-Qaeda, a local official told AFP. “Southerners wake up. Say ‘no’ to Al-Qaeda and ‘no’ to Houthis,” protesters chanted, also declaring their rejection of the Shiite rebels who have seized the capital and are fighting to expand their territory in the south.

Syria Headline:   Syrian General Injured in Rebel Suicide Bombing

A suicide bomber has blown himself up in the centre of the Syrian capital, Damascus, officials and activists say. State media said troops had foiled an attack by a “terrorist group” in the Rukn al-Din district, where several major security facilities are located. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the jihadist group al-Nusra Front had targeted an army general responsible for logistics. Maj Gen Mohammed Eid was injured, and one of his guards was killed, it added. However, security sources denied that the general had been targeted. Monday’s attack took place near a building used by the Syrian army’s munitions and supply division. Witnesses told the AFP news agency that the blast emanated from a small motorcycle, and that it was followed by 15 minutes of gunfire. “A terrorist group rode into the Rukn al-Din neighbourhood on motorcycles and began clashing with security forces,” a security official told AFP. “When they realised they could not escape, one of them detonated a suicide belt he was wearing,” he said, adding that security forces killed the remaining rebels. A local hospital said it was treating six people wounded by the explosion, but did not identify them. Rami Abdul Rahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said a member of al-Nusra Front had blown himself up next to a car carrying Gen Eid as it passed through Rukn al-Din.

Syria Headline:   Warning Intelligence Update: Possible Upheaval in the Syrian Capital

Major operations targeting entrenched anti-Assad forces in the outskirts of Damascus appear to be upcoming as Hezbollah and the Syrian regime prepare to target anti-Assad hold out positions in the capital and its countryside. In addition, indicators have emerged of a possible intervention by regional actors to assist in defeating Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. This includes ongoing negotiations to deepen the cooperation between prominent hardline Islamist groups Jaysh al-Islam and Harakat Ahrar al-Sham, which would increase the effectiveness of anti-Assad forces regardless of direct regional intervention. Together these trends indicate that a major shakeup of the military situation in Damascus Province is likely in coming weeks.

Syria Headline:   Syrian air raid near school kills 4 children

Syrian activists say a government airstrike near a school in the northern city of Aleppo has killed at least seven people, including children. The Aleppo Media Center activist group and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights say the strike Sunday hit Aleppo’s Seif Al-Dawla neighborhood. The Observatory put the death toll at seven, including four children. An AFP correspondent described buildings in ruins and small bulldozers working to clear the rubble. Classroom walls had completely collapsed, exposing mangled chairs and desks, and men carried whatever books they could save out of the building. The Aleppo Media center said at least 10 people were killed and around 20 wounded. Differences in death tolls are common in Syria in the chaotic aftermath of attacks.

Syria Headline: Islamic State reports new gains northeastern Syria

Fierce battles continue between the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the eastern countryside of Tel Temir (50 km west of Hasakah), northeastern Syria, after the group launched a major offensive on the villages along the Khabur River, reaching the highway between Aleppo and Hasakah. The area has seen heavy fighting during the last two days, especially in the villages of Tel Jadaya and Tel Fwaida, north of the al-Khabur River, resulting in the death of dozens on both sides. Nevertheless, IS was able to make new gains in the area. Speaking to ARA News, Damhat Zagro, a fighter in the YPG ranks, said that an IS suicide attack struck the YPG headquarters in the village of Tel Rumman. “Following two successive attacks on the village (Tel Rumman) from different directions, the group was easily able to control the northern route towards the city of Hasakah,” he explained. In a related development, an Assyrian fighter from the Haras al-Khabur forces, Mikhail Dinkha, told ARA News that the terrorist group received new reinforcements from Aleppo, including more militants and heavy armored vehicles.

Iraq Headline: Deadly attacks hit Iraqi capital

At least 13 people have been killed by a car bomb in Baghdad in one of the deadliest attacks in the Iraqi capital this year. “At least 13 people were killed and 39 wounded in a car bomb facing a popular restaurant in the Karrada area,” a police colonel told news agency AFP. Karrada is an area full of shops and restaurants and would have been busy on Saturday night, which marks the end of the weekend in Iraq. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack in the predominantly Shiite district, which comes after a series of similar bombings in the capital. Eleven people were killed and more than 40 wounded in a wave of car bomb attacks on Thursday and another nine were killed in two car bombings in Baghdad on Monday. The Islamic State jihadist group claimed it carried out those attacks on Shiite districts of Baghdad to avenge attacks on displaced persons from a Sunni province.

Iraq Headline: Iraqi forces plead for help as ISIS closes in on refinery

Iraqi forces besieged inside the country’s largest oil refinery are running low on food and pleading for reinforcements to save them from Islamic State militants who have advanced deep into the compound in the past week. The insurgents now hold large sections of the sprawling Baiji refinery complex in northern Iraq where some 200 policemen, soldiers and elite special forces are holding out. “We are surrounded by Daesh from all sides,” said a policeman called Mohanad, speaking via telephone from the refinery where his unit has taken up defensive positions in a guest house on the eastern side of the complex. Daesh is the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS or ISIL in English. “We can hear Daesh fighters shouting and threatening to behead anyone they catch. We are running short of ammunition, food and drinking water. We eat only one meal a day. We tear our uniforms to bandage other soldiers’ and policemen’s wounds.”

Headline:   Garland, Texas, shooting suspect linked himself to ISIS in tweets

A day after police killed two gunmen who tried to ambush a Garland, Texas, event featuring controversial cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed, details began to emerge about the shooters. One suspect, identified as Elton Simpson by a federal law enforcement source, linked himself to ISIS in a tweet posted just before the attack. He also was no stranger to federal investigators. In 2011, he was convicted of making a false statement involving international and domestic terrorism. The other suspect, identified as Nadir Soofi by two federal law enforcement officials, was Simpson’s roommate in a Phoenix apartment. He wasn’t well-known to federal law enforcement and was not on the FBI’s radar, one of the officials said. Investigators were combing through evidence retrieved from the shooters’ Arizona home to help piece together a timeline of how their plot came together, the official said.

Headline:  Fear of full-scale war mounts as Russian forces launch deadly new attacks in Ukraine

Ukraine’s military spokesperson Andriy Lysenko said on Sunday that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and six others had been wounded over the preceeding 24 hours. Lysenko said more Russian heavy weapons had been deployed to east Ukraine and that there are currently more attacks on Ukrainian army defensive positions than at any time since the two-month-old Minsk ceasefire deal was struck. Russian-backed militants meanwhile claimed Ukraine was shelling central Donetsk with Andrei Purgin, Russian-backed militant leader saying on social media: “We are inches away from the Minsk agreements falling apart & the start of full-scale hostilities”. Appearing on Russia state TV Eduard Basurin another prominent leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic also claimed that the Ukrainian army was firing heavy weapons at the centre of occupied Donetsk. The claims have fuelled specualtion they could be used as a pretext for launching a new Russian offensive to seize more Ukrainian territory.

Headline: 2 Russian war ships & submarine detected near Latvian border

Headline: NATO & allies stage thousands-strong drills across Europe

The Latvian National Armed Forces say they have spotted two Russian military vessels and a submarine near to the Latvian border. The ships and the submarine were allegedly detected in the Latvian exclusive economic zone, just eight kilometers from Latvia’s border. The Latvian National Armed Forces say they recognized the vessels: a Project 775 class landing ship, a Parchim class corvette (Project 1331M in Russia), and a Project 877 Paltus diesel-electric submarine. Latvia says its National Armed Forces have detected Russian vessels 42 times this year alone. In 2014, Russian military ships and planes approached the Latvian border about 250 times, it said. Maneuvers in Latvia’s exclusive economic zone, which is not in the country’s territorial waters, do violate international regulations. However, Latvian authorities have frequently expressed their concern over the presence of Russian vessels near its frontier.

Headline:  Senate prepares to advance bill on Iran nuclear deal

Republican Senate leaders, worried that proposals from conservatives in their caucus could upend the fragile bipartisan agreement on legislation targeting the Iranian nuclear deal, are poised to cut off debate on the bill, Politico reports. The U.S., Iran, and five other nations reached an interim agreement at the end of March to limit and monitor Iran’s nuclear energy program in exchange for a rollback of the sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy. Negotiators are working toward an end-of-June deadline for a final deal. The Senate is debating a bill that would allow Congress to review any final agreement that emerges. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee managed to hammer out a proposal in March that passed the panel unanimously and drew the reluctant backing of the White House. That bill would have allowed Congress 30 days to pass a resolution disapproving of a deal with Iran before any U.S. sanctions are lifted. But now that the bill has hit the Senate floor, several conservative Republicans are pushing amendments to demand more of Iran, and the White House is threatening to veto any bill that could jeopardize the international agreement.

Headline: South Sudan’s future at grave risk: Kerry

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday that South Sudan’s government and rebels had failed to make compromises needed to end a civil conflict and that this was putting the future of the world’s youngest nation at “grave risk”. South Sudan split from Sudan as an independent nation in 2011, helped by the political and financial backing of the United States and other Western powers. But a political crisis between President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar, who he sacked as his deputy in 2013, erupted into a conflict in December of that year. Fighting has rumbled on since then with both sides ignoring repeated agreements to stop. “South Sudan’s leaders … have not yet chosen to make the compromises needed for peace,” Kerry told a news conference in Nairobi, noting that the fighting put at “grave risk” the promising future the oil-producing nation once had.

The Libyan Air Force launched a series of airstrikes against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) positions in the eastern city of Derna on Saturday, the stronghold of a number of extremist groups currently operating in the war-torn country. Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat on Sunday, a high-ranking Libyan Air Force official, who requested anonymity, said the targeted ISIS positions in Derna included weapons and ammunition storage facilities used by the extremist group. In an online statement, which also included photographs, ISIS also said it had been targeted in Derna, though it maintained the strikes had been limited to its “Islamic Police” headquarters in the city. Neither the source from the Libyan Air Force nor ISIS gave further details regarding any losses the group suffered in the city following the strikes. Meanwhile, sources from the Libyan National Army told Asharq Al-Awsat on Sunday that forces from the militant Libyan Dawn group recently attempted to take over the Al-Watia Airbase, which lies 87 miles (140 kilometers) southwest of the capital Tripoli. The sources said the advance on Al-Watia by Libyan Dawn had been blocked after fierce clashes occurred between the militants and army units in the region surrounding the base.

Headline: Three reported killed in unrest over Burundi president’s vote bid

Three protesters were killed in Burundi’s capital on Monday, the Red Cross said, as demonstrations against a decision by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s to seek a third term in office ran into a second week. Police in the Musaga district of Bujumbura fired shots toward lines of protesters who were hurling stones, a Reuters witness said. An explosion also wounded at least two officers. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told a news conference in Nairobi the decision to seek a third term “flies directly in the face” of the constitution. Nkurunziza, he said, should pay heed to public concern. Police spokesman Liboire Bakunduwukize denied two protesters were killed, and said 15 police were wounded by a hand grenade. “Today, tomorrow or the day after, wherever they will hurl grenades or wherever they will shoot, the police has a right to throw a grenade as well and even to shoot back and that’s how it will be,” he told reporters at a hospital. Hundreds more rallied elsewhere in the capital, called out by civil society groups who argue that under a peace agreement that ended a civil war, Nkurunziza could not serve another term. Red Cross spokesman Alexis Manirakiza said three protesters had been killed and 35 wounded.
