Note: Changes in ETRM before the new year. For the past 8 years The End Times Research Ministry has been doing what we can to support Pastor Titus in Kenya. Pastor Titus was under the wing of Pastor Timothy Moore who had visited Pastor Titus in Kenya. Pastor Timothy was my check and balance for Pastor Titus. After Pastor Moore passed away I was left to carry on the work in Kenya trusting Pastor Titus’ without anyone actually being in Kenya. Without a doubt we have seen the churches built, and people being helped such as feeding the poor.
Last year in some of my posts I mentioned changing the course of my ministry. Since I do not have anyone in Kenya to monitor the works of Pastor Titus I am no longer going to support the Kenya ministry under Pastor Titus. I think it is very important that who ever this ministry tries to help have people in the exact area who can act as a checks and balance for the ministry and, since this ministry does not I can no longer keep on supporting the Kenya ministry. I think it wise that anyone who has been supporting Pastor Titus via Ascent Ministries and still wants to do so should take a trip to Kenya to visit Pastor Titus to make sure all your blessings go to where they are intended to go. I am sure that if Pastor Titus’ work has not altered that the Lord will continue to take care of him and his needs. Pastor Titus has received ample support over the past 8 years to get him and his Church on his feet. Now is the time to put Pastor Titus’ faith into action. (Frank DiMora)

Headline: PA court to make final decision about elections on September 21
The Palestinian Authority municipal elections in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have been suspended, putting the holding of the long-awaited contests in jeopardy. The PA High Court of Justice said it suspended the elections, scheduled for October 8, because of the exclusion of Jerusalem from the electoral process, and amid concerns about the legality of local courts in Gaza. “In light of the deprivation of Jerusalem and its suburbs’ citizens of their electoral rights, and [concerns about] the legality of decisions taken by courts in the Gaza Strip… We rule to suspend temporarily the Palestinian government’s decision to hold elections,” said a copy of Thursday’s ruling published on Wafa, the official Palestinian news site. Israel informed the PA in July that it will not allow it to hold elections in any part of Jerusalem. The PA High Court will hold another hearing regarding the future of the elections on September 21.

Headline: Israeli UN Envoy: Jew-Hatred At ‘Highest Level of Our Lifetimes’
Jew hatred and demonization of Israel are at “the highest level of our lifetimes,” Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations said at a high-level forum on anti-Semitism held on Wednesday at the UN’s headquarters in New York. “Over 1/3 of European Jews are afraid to wear a yarmulke or Star of David in public,” Danny Danon said. “More than half of French Jews have considered emigrating because they don’t feel safe living as Jews in France. Today we hear things about Jews and the Jewish people that we thought belonged to the pages of history. … Anti-Semitism is returning to everyday life without shame.” Danon also said that social media presents a “new kind of threat” in that anti-Semitism goes global very quickly. “We are living in a new era and we face a new kind of anti-Semitism,” Danon said. “Using the tools of online social networks to demonize the Jewish people and the Jewish state, this is Anti-Semitism 2.0.” “The enemies of the Jewish people are using the tools of modern technology to target and harass Jews around the world,” he said, adding that the modern world makes life easier for anti-Semites since “all you need is a wireless connection, a Facebook account, and a deep hatred for the Jewish people.”

Headline: Israeli military expects Islamic State attack on its southern border ‘within six months’
Israel is bracing for an Islamic State (Isil) terror attack along its southern border with Egypt within the next six months, a senior Israeli military officer has warned. Wilayat Sinai, the jihadist group’s affiliate in the Sinai desert, has been stealing armored vehicles and anti-tank missiles from Egypt’s military and Israeli expects the weapons will soon be turned against its forces on the Egyptian border. The Israeli officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Telegraph that Wilayat Sinai had stolen at least one Egyptian M60 battle tank and had amassed a supply of Russian-made Kornet missiles, which can strike targets more than three miles away. “It could happen today, tomorrow, in a month but within the next six months we will come into an engagement with Wilayat Sinai,” the officer said. “In the next six months they will try to carry out an attack and try to do something against Israel.”

Headline: Crowds rally in Iran against Saudi Arabia ahead of hajj
Thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets to protest against Saudi Arabia ahead of this year’s hajj pilgrimage. The demonstrators shouted “Death to Al Saud!” — a reference to the kingdom’s ruling family. State media reported similar protests across the country after Friday prayers. Iranians won’t be attending this year’s pilgrimage as diplomatic ties between Shiite power and the Sunni-ruled kingdom remain severed amid tensions between the two Mideast nations. Iran recently stepped up criticism of Saudi Arabia over its handling of the stampede and crush during last year’s hajj. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei even said Saudi Arabia “murdered” hajj pilgrims who were injured in the disaster.

Three Turkish soldiers were killed and four others were wounded during an attack by the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) on two Turkish tanks late on Sept. 6 as Turkish forces push deeper into Syrian soil. The attack took place near the Syrian town of al-Rai on the 14th day of Turkey’s Euphrates Shield operation in northern Syria, the Turkish military announced Sept. 6. Two soldiers were killed on the spot and five were injured when ISIL missiles hit the two tanks in the Wuquf village, the military said. One of the wounded soldiers later died in hospital despite all attempts to save his life, lifting the death toll to three, the military said. Two members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), which is backed by the Turkish military in their advance on ISIL in Syria, were also killed while two others were wounded.

Syria Headline: Putin-Erdogan deal for Syria is ME exit for Obama
According to debkafile’s intelligence and Mid East sources, Putin virtually shut the door on further cooperation with the United States in Syria. He highhandedly informed Obama that he now holds all the high cards for controlling the Syrian conflict, whereas Washington was just about out of the game. Putin picked up the last cards, our sources disclose, in a secret deal with Erdogan for Russian-Turkish collaboration in charting the next steps in the Middle East. The G20 therefore, instead of promoting new US-Russian understanding, gave the impetus to a new Russian-Turkish partnership. Erdogan raked in instant winnings: Before he left China, he had pocketed Putin’s nod to grab a nice, 4,000-sq.km slice of northern Syria, as a “security zone” under the control of the Turkish army and air force, with Russian non-interference guaranteed. This Turkish zone would include the Syrian towns of Jarablus, Manjib, Azaz and Al-Bab. Ankara would reciprocate by withdrawing its support from the pro-US and pro-Saudi rebel groups fighting the Assad army and its allies in the area north of Aleppo. Turkey’s concession gave Putin a selling-point to buy the Syrian ruler assent to Erdogan’s project. Ankara’s selling-point to the West was that the planned security zone would provide a safe haven for Syrian refugees and draw off some of the outflow perturbing Europe. It now turns out that, just as the Americans sold the Syrian Kurds down the river to Turkey (when Vice President Joe Biden last month ordered them to withdraw from their lands to the eastern bank of the Euphrates River or lose US support), so too are the Turks now dropping the Syrian rebels they supported in the mud by re-branding them as “terrorists.” The head of this NATO nation has moreover gone behind America’s back for a deal with the Russian ruler on how to proceed with the next steps of the Syrian conflict.

Syria Headline: ISIS launches new offensive in southwest Deir Ezzor
The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched a new offensive in the Deir Ezzor Governorate on Friday, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s 137th Artillery Brigade headquarters and Tal Kroum. ISIS began the assault by storming the southwestern perimeter of Tal Kroum, resulting in a fierce battle with the Syrian Armed Forces that is still ongoing at the moment. Meanwhile, west of the 137th Brigade’s HQ, another ISIS unit attempted to bypass the Syrian Arab Army’s defenses along the main road leading to this strategic military installation; however, they were subsequently repelled after a short battle this morning. According to a military source from the 137th Brigade, their forces destroyed 3 armored vehicles that belonged to the Islamic State near Tal Kroum, while also killing another 11 militants that were attempting to infiltrate their positions.

Iraq Headline: U.S. sends 500 more troops to help fight 4,500 Islamic State militants in Mosul
The United States has increased its deployed forces by more than 500 troops to assist Iraqi security forces in the operation to claim Mosul from Islamic State control. Col. John Dorrian, spokesman for the United States’ Operation Inherent Resolve mission against the Islamic State, on Thursday said the increase in deployed troops is to help Iraq seize the Islamic State’s Iraqi stronghold, Mosul — where he estimates there are up to 4,500 IS militants remaining. U.S. President Barack Obama and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi both hope to seize Mosul before the year’s end, but Dorrian said the operation is “a very tough battle.” The Islamic State, also known as ISIS, ISIL and Daesh, captured Mosul as part of a land grab in 2014 that saw to the militant group’s peak in terms of land acquisition. The battle to directly capture Mosul has been held off, though Iraqi security forces, aided by the U.S.-led anti-Islamic State coalition, have recaptured surrounding areas and targeted IS positions for months. “Prime Minister Abadi has come out and said that he would like to get this done within the year, and we are going to be at the Iraqi security force’s side and be there to try to help pursue that,” Dorrian said. Dorrian said Iraqi security forces are leading the battle for Mosul and that the United States’ role is to train and assist the soldiers, with the aid of airstrikes and special operations missions.

Turkish army forces bombed the Kurdish town of Afrin in Aleppo province in northern Syria with heavy artillery on Thursday, causing casualties among civilians, activists and eyewitnesses reported. At least six civilians were killed and eight others were injured in the Turkish bombardment, which targeted the Sourkeh district in Afrin. “Turkey’s military forces, stationed on the Syrian border, launched dozens of artillery shells on Afrin. At least 50 shells hit residential buildings in the Sourkeh district,” rights activist Roj Musa told ARA News in Afrin. “Six civilians lost their lives so far, and eight others were injured, some of them are in critical condition,” Musa reported. The bombardment also caused huge destruction in residential buildings. Local rescue teams continued searching for survivors under the rubble. In the meantime, the Kurdish administration in Afrin issued a list of the names of the victims, and condemned the Turkish attack.

At least 8 people were killed and 14 others were wounded in a rocket attack in northern Baghlan province of Afghanistan, local officials said Friday. The incident took place late on Thursday afternoon in the new city of Baghlan Markazi district after a mortar round landed in the area. Provincial public health officials confirmed 8 civilians including a woman and two children were among those killed. The officials further added that a number of injured civilians are in critical condition amid fears that the death toll could rise. No group including the Taliban militants has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident. In a statement released by Taliban earlier today, the group said they are not involved in the attack. Baghlan is among the relatively volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan where Taliban insugents are actively operating in its various districts and often carry out insurgency activities. Meanwhile, The Taliban has launched an offensive to take control of Tarin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province. Its forces have entered the city and are engaged in heavy fighting with Afghan forces there. Tarin Kot is the second provincial capital in the south that is under direct threat of a Taliban takeover.

Headline: UN Security Council to hold closed door meeting on N.Korea’s nuclear test
North Korea drew global condemnation after conducting its fifth nuclear test on Friday, the anniversary of the reclusive nation’s founding, and said it was now able to produce miniaturized nuclear arms. In a statement on state-run television, Pyongyang said no radiation was leaked in the blast. The official Korean Central News Agency said the detonation of a nuclear warhead showed the regime has the ability to attach atomic weapons to rockets. “The standardization of the nuclear warhead will enable the DPRK to produce at will and as many as it wants a variety of smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear warheads of higher strike power,” KCNA said, using the acronym for North Korea. “This has definitely put on a higher level the DPRK’s technology of mounting nuclear warheads on ballistic rockets.” The test drew opprobrium from world leaders, including South Korean President Park Geun Hye and U.S. President Barack Obama, and prompted an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council Friday in New York. The blast set off an artificial earthquake around 9:30 a.m. Seoul time, with the defense ministry saying the explosion was 10 kilotons. The United States Geological Survey put the quake magnitude at 5.3. The Pentagon said it will be deploying an aircraft to the region to collect air samples that can help determine the nature of the explosion.

Headline: Russia Holds Large-scale Military Drills in Crimea
Russia on Friday deployed cruise missiles, multiple rocket launchers, tanks and its latest anti-aircraft system at massive military drills in Crimea. Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in March 2014 and since then has sent thousands of troops and heavy weaponry there. The Russian defense ministry invited dozens of journalists Friday to a remote firing range at the Black Sea coast to display elaborate war games which involved paratroopers, tanks, cruise missiles launched from a submarine and the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system. The drills, which began across southern Russia and Crimea earlier this week and have involved a total of over 120,000 troops, are some of the largest exercises Russia has held for years. The chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, insisted in emailed comments that there have never been more than 12,500 troops involved in the drills at a given moment, which means that Russia did not violate any international treaties.

Addressing the United States in a video message posted Thursday on YouTube, Zawahiri blamed 9/11 on “your crimes against us.” He said that if these continue, 9/11 “will be repeated thousands of times.” In the video, Zawahiri cited Washington’s policies towards Arab and Muslim countries, its “occupation” of lands in their countries, and support for their “criminal and corrupt” governments. Zawahiri also urged extremists to unite and urged African Americans to convert to Islam to “save” them from U.S. laws which he said are controlled by “the white majority.”

Headline: Markets Tumble Around the World
The S&P 500 dropped 1.9 percent to 2,140.11 at 2:27 p.m. in New York. The rout has halted a period of calm that saw the index no more than 1 percent in either direction for 43 days. It also sent the gauge below its average price during the past 50 days for the first time since July 6. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 302.49 points, or 1.6 percent, to 18,177.42. Tranquility that has enveloped global markets for more than two months is being upended as central banks start to question the benefits of further monetary easing, sending government debt, stocks and emerging-market assets to the biggest declines since June. The dollar jumped. The S&P 500 Index tumbled 2 percent in its biggest drop since the Brexit vote emerging-market assets and global equities fell the most since Britain voted to secede from the European Union. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note jumped to the highest since June and the greenback almost erased a weekly slide as a Federal Reserve official warned waiting too long to raise rates threatened to overheat the economy. German 10-year yields rose to zero for the first time since July after the European Central Bank downplayed the need for more stimulus. Fed Bank of Boston President Eric Rosengren’s comments moved him firmly into the hawkish camp, sending the odds for a rate hike this year above 60 percent. He spoke a day after ECB President Mario Draghi played down the prospect of an increase in asset purchases, while DoubleLine Capital Chief Investment Officer Jeffrey Gundlach said it’s time to prepare for higher rates. “This is a big, big moment,” Gundlach said during a webcast Thursday. “Interest rates have bottomed. They may not rise in the near term as I’ve talked about for years. But I think it’s the beginning of something and you’re supposed to be defensive.”

Headline: Super-gonorrhoea outbreak could be out of control
An outbreak of super-gonorrhoea in the UK is out of control and efforts to stop it have been unsuccessful, health officials have warned. It is feared the sexually transmitted disease may be becoming increasingly resistant to treatment, prompting concerns further rapid spread could occur. In April, it emerged an outbreak of so-called ‘super-gonorrhoea’ had occurred in Leeds, with cases also noted in the West Midlands, London and southern-England. It began among heterosexual couples but has since been spread among men who have sex with men (MSM). In a report issued today by health agency Public Health England, the group warned: “The outbreak of HL-AziR gonorrhoea in England persists. There have been 17 cases of HL-AziR gonorrhoea reported to date in 2016 compared to 15 cases for the same time period in 2015. Between November 2014 and August 2016 there have been a total of 48 confirmed and two probable cases. “The potential for rapid spread of HL-AziR N. gonorrhoeae among high risk sexual networks including MSM is of particular concern.”

Archaeologists in Jerusalem say they have for the first time reconstructed likely designs of a Biblical Jewish temple floor using original fragments. Experts reassembled pieces of tiles found amid tons of earth from the site known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif. They say the tiles date from the period of the Second Temple, during the time of King Herod about 2,000 years ago. The temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD during a Jewish rebellion. Some 600 segments of coloured stone floor have been found since archaeologists began examining the debris from the hilltop site in 2004.

Troops loyal to the Syrian regime along with Hezbollah fighters have allegedly been finalizing plans to launch a large-scale operation against Syrian opposition forces near the border with Israel, according to Iranian media. “The Syrian army and Hezbollah fighters have been working on a joint plan to end militancy in Southern Syria, particularly near the Golan Heights,” Iran’s Fars news agency quoted unnamed military sources as saying Monday. The sources added that the Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah has already deployed a large contingency of fighters near the Quneitra area, located between Syria and the Israeli Golan Heights. The Fars report did not provide further details on what such a possible attack would involve or when it would take place. On Monday, the former head of the Israeli domestic security agency said the Syrian conflict is entering a highly unpredictable phase, adding that the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah posed a growing threat to Israel despite losing many fighters.

Headline: UN: Palestinian economy could double without Israeli occupation
The Palestinian economy could easily double, while sky-high unemployment and poverty would plummet if the Israeli occupation were lifted, the United Nations development agency said Tuesday. In a new report, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) pointed to a long list of ways the Israeli occupation stifled the economies of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including the confiscation of Palestinian land, water and other natural resources. The widespread restrictions on the movement of people and goods, destruction of homes, trees and other assets, and the expansion of Israeli settlements were also damaging, it said. Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon charged that “the UN report is filled with half-truths and vicious lies against the State of Israel. I call on the UN secretary-general to reject the conclusions of the report, as they are an ugly distortion of the truth.” Israel’s delegation to the UN said the report was part of a campaign by the Palestinian leadership to move the conflict to the international arena, where they could reach diplomatic achievements without having to negotiate with Israel. “The Palestinians must not be allowed to take over the UN’s agencies and divert them of their original purpose—working for the betterment of the world—thus turning them into ‘lie machines’ that accuse Israel of everything imaginable,” Danon said. “The UN secretary-general must make it clear that continuing to spread lies against Israel will lead to a serious and painful cutback in the budget of the agency preparing the report,” he added.

Headline: Police: Jews may not pray in Muslim Quarter of Old City
A ban on Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount has been extended to the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, police officials say, justifying the series of recent arrests of Jews praying outside of entrances to the Temple Mount. After a number of arrests of Jews praying outside of the gates of the Temple Mount, police justified the arrests during a court hearing on Monday, claiming that the ban on Jewish prayer is not limited to the Temple Mount, but extends to the areas around the entrances to the holy site and even to the Muslim Quarter as a whole. Police representatives Safi Sarahan and Roei Avrahami explained the ban in court, following questioning by an attorney from the Honenu organization representing several girls arrested for praying in the vicinity of the Temple Mount. The officers revealed that prayer by Jews anywhere near the Temple Mount or even in the Muslim Quarter was considered “disturbing the peace”, except where coordinated with the police in advance. “Prayer is permissible anywhere in the Jewish Quarter, but the moment you come without permission and pray in the Muslim Quarter, that causes a public disturbance. Inside the Muslim Quarters and the entrances it is forbidden to pray.” When pressed by the Honenu attorney to cite the law which prohibited Jewish prayer in the Muslim Quarter, the police represents said the matter was within the discretion of the police, under their general responsibility for “keeping the peace”.

Headline: KGB document said to reveal Abbas was Soviet agent in Syria – The Times of Israel is liveblogging Wednesday’s events as they unfold
Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas was a Soviet spy in Damascus in the 1980s, Israel’s Channel 1 reports, blowing the lid off information uncovered in an archive smuggled out of the USSR. According to reporter Oren Nahari, the famed Mitrokhin archive, kept by KGB defector Vasily Mitrokhin, reveals that Abbas was a KGB spy in Damascus in 1983. The documents, obtained by Israeli researchers and scholars Isabela Ginor and Gideon Remez, show that Abbas, who was code-named Krotov (mole) worked under Mikhail Bodganov, who was then station posted in Damascus and is now a top Russian diplomat in the Middle East. Bogdanov was caught in a diplomatic tussle earlier this week after trying to broker a summit between Abbas and Netanyahu in Moscow, with each side saying it was willing to meet and the other side wasn’t. It’s not clear if Abbas, who studied in university in Moscow in the 1980s, was an agent before or after his time in Damascus. Mitrokhin’s notes are considered among the most complete information available to researchers about the KGB. He brought them to the UK in 1992 and his edited notes were released in 2014. His handwritten notes remain classified by MI5. Responding to the report that Mahmoud Abbas was a KGB agent in Syria in 1983, a top Palestinian official says its all malarkey tied to the failed bid for a Netanyahu-Abbas meeting in Moscow. Fatah apparatchik Nabil Shaath calls the report a hollow attempt to evade the Russian invite for a summit in Moscow, according to Israel radio reporter Gal Berger. “He was not an agent of the KGB or any other intelligence agency,” Shaath says. The report of Abbas’s Moscow ties came on the heels of swirling reports of a possible Netanyahu-Abbas meeting in Moscow, though each side accused the other of being unwilling to meet.

Yemen’s national army and pro-government Popular Resistance committees have claimed control over a number of strategic locations in Marib governorate’s Sirwah, Al Arabiya News Channel reported a spokesman as saying on Wednesday. Abdullah al-Shandqi, a spokesman for Popular Resistance committees, said about 35 of the rebels from the Iran-backed Houthi militias and forces loyal to deposed president Ali Abdullah Saleh have been killed following clashes in the area. The committees are armed groups, which were formed in several Yemeni provinces during the Yemeni Civil War and after the attempted coup by the Houthis to topple the internationally recognized government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in September 2014. Since the coup attempt, the Houthis have been in control of the capital, Sanaa. Syria Headline: 10 killed in Syrian city hit by suspicious gas, day after suspected chlorine bombing
Syrian activists say at least 10 civilians have been killed in a new airstrike on the neighborhood where a suspected chlorine gas attack struck the previous day. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says at least one child was among the victims of Wednesday’s strike on the al-Sukkari neighborhood in the contested city of Aleppo. The Aleppo branch of the Syrian Civil Defense search and rescue organization put the initial casualty toll at 20 dead and more than 40 wounded but disparate tolls are common in the aftermath of airstrikes. Medical workers in the city have said the opposition-controlled neighborhood was hit with chlorine gas on Tuesday, though the report could not be independently verified. Activists and medical workers say Syrian government and Russian jets are behind the attacks. At least one person dies and more than 100 injured Tuesday’s bombing, Al Jazeera reported. Syrian activists and rescue workers in the rebel-held part of the contested city said government warplanes dropped the suspected chlorine bombs on Tuesday on a crowded neighborhood. The report could not be independently verified and it was not clear how it was determined that chlorine gas was released. In Tuesday’s attack, a medical report from one of the hospitals in the besieged eastern rebel-held part of Aleppo was shared with journalists via text messages. It said at least 71 people, including 37 children and 10 women, were treated for breathing difficulties, dry cough, and that their clothes smelled of chlorine. The report said 10 of the patients were in critical care, including a pregnant woman.

Iraq Headline: Car bombing kills at least 12 civilians in Iraqi capital
A car bombing claimed by the Daesh terror group struck a bustling commercial area of central Baghdad overnight, killing at least 12 civilians, Iraqi officials said on Tuesday. The explosives-laden pick-up truck was left in a parking lot in the Shiite-dominated district of Karradah, near a hospital and shops, a police officer said. Up to 28 people were wounded and at least 15 cars were damaged, he said. A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media. Mourners held a funeral procession for some of the dead on Tuesday morning, with men carrying coffins wrapped in Iraqi flags as women wailed and pounded their chests in grief. At the scene of the bombing, shocked residents examined the blood-stained pavement and the damage to nearby shops. Daesh issued a statement saying the suicide attack targeted Shiites. The Associated Press could not verify the authenticity of the statement, but it was posted on militant websites commonly used by the extremists.

Iraq Headline: ISIS attacks Iraqi Army at Tanf border-crossing
The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) carried out a powerful assault near the Syrian border on Tuesday, targeting the Iraqi Army controlled Tanf Crossing in the Al-Anbar Governorate. ISIS began the assault by attempting to overrun the Iraqi Army’s checkpoints near this strategic border-crossing; however, they were unsuccessful after a short battle. The terrorist group attempted to hype up the battle by posting pictures of their personnel with heavy weapons, but this did very little to change the outcome of the firefight.

Headline: New Syria group vows to “resist” Turkish military incursion
A group claiming to represent “national Syrian forces” has vowed to fight Turkey’s military incursion in Syria, announcing its formation in a north Aleppo town that is under the administrative control of the de-facto autonomous Kurdish government. On Tuesday, the Syrian National Resistance held a press conference in Tel Rifaat to introduce its founding declaration, which was read out by Rezan Hedo, an independent member of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces’ political wing. “Oh Syrian brothers, people of the region have suffered from the decades of Turkish-Ottoman rule, [which] has left us with only ignorance, backwardness, hatred, sectarianism and fighting between brothers at the same time as our wealth was taken away as well as parts of our land,” the speech, which was replete with nationalistic terminology, began. The new group went on to launch further broadsides against Turkey, accusing Syria’s northern neighbor of perpetrating “the worst forms of genocide” against people in the region, including Arabs, Kurds, Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians and Chaldeans. “Today, [Turkey] has returned with a new look but with the same [old] mentality; to occupy other parts of our Syrian land after sowing discord and infighting between Syrians through their support for terror,” the statement added, in reference to Ankara’s military operation in northern Syria. ***see also Sept. 2nd post :http://debka.com/newsupdatepopup/17864/Syrian-Kurds-call-Iraqi-brothers-to-the-flag-against-Turkey Sept. 7, 2016
Headline: Taliban militants advance on Uruzgan provincial capital
The capital of Afghanistan’s central province of Uruzgan is on the brink of falling into militants’ hands in the wake of an advance by Taliban, who have taken position within a few kilometers of the city. Abdul Karim, the head of Uruzgan provincial council, on Wednesday warned of the collapse of the city unless authorities in Kabul provide air support and ground reinforcements. “If there is no significant air support and ground reinforcement, Tarin Kot will collapse,” Karim said. Local Afghan officials say many of the embattled police and soldiers around Tarin Kot are fighting with minimal reinforcements and often with insufficient food and ammunition. Afghan security forces have halted Taliban’s advance about two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the volatile city’s prison. The militants seek to free inmates from the jail.

A Russian jet zoomed within just 10 feet of a U.S. Navy spy plane over the Black Sea on Wednesday, the latest in a string of daring maneuvers involving Russian aircraft and the U.S. military, a defense official with knowledge of the incident told Fox News. The Russian Su-27 flew dangerously close to a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft used primarily for anti-submarine warfare while on routine patrol, a senior defense official said. Fox News is told a classified photo of the close call exists, but officials have not decided whether to release it. The incident occurred Wednesday, but the senior official did not give a specific time. Two officials speaking to Reuters described the maneuver as “unsafe and unprofessional.” Meanwhile, A U.S. Navy coastal patrol ship changed course after a fast-attack craft from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps came within 100 yards (91 meters) of it in the central Gulf on Sunday, U.S. Defense Department officials said on Tuesday. It was at least the fourth such incident in less than a month. U.S. officials are concerned that these actions by Iran could lead to mistakes.

Startled residents of a Russian city inside the Arctic Circle have been posting photos of a local river that has mysteriously turned blood red. Photos published on Russian social media appear to the show the Daldykan River near the city of Norilsk flowing crimson. Russian authorities have yet to establish a reason for the river’s unusual appearance, but local people quickly linked it to a giant metals plant upstream. Russia’s Environment Ministry said it was investigating the plant as the likely cause. Norilsk is known as one of the most polluted cities on earth, built around factories mostly belonging to the vast metals company Norilsk Nickel. Some Norilsk residents wrote in a local social media group that they believe the river’s biblical shade is linked to runoff from a nearby smelting plant. Some suggested the color was being produced by wastewater mixed with mineral ore leaking into the river from the Hope Metals Plant. ***please read the Bible verses carefully, understanding the most likely cause of THIS incident is chemical run-off.

Headline: Tropical Storm Newton kills 2, to bring ‘life-threatening’ conditions to U.S.
At least two people have died due to Tropical Storm Newton, which is spreading heavy rains into Arizona and New Mexico on Wednesday after making landfall as a hurricane in Mexico’s mainland. A shrimp boat capsized in the Gulf of California amid rough seas. At least two people died and three others were missing. BBC News reported that officials said the five people ignored warnings against going out to sea. Tropical Storm Newton is expected to generate up to 3 inches of rain in the central part of the Baja California peninsula. Mexico’s Sonora state is expected to see rain accumulation up to 6 inches — possibly 10 inches in isolated areas. Southeastern Arizona and southern New Mexico are expected to get from 1 inch to 3 inches of total rain through Thursday. “This heavy rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides in areas of mountainous terrain,” the NHC said. Mexico’s government has changed a hurricane warning into a tropical storm warning for the northwestern coast of mainland Mexico. The storm system, which is near Mexico’s Bahia Kino, has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and is moving north at a speed of 17 mph.

Headline: Israeli PM Netanyahu considering Putin’s offer to host Palestine talks in Moscow – statement
Benjamin Netanyahu is considering Russia’s offer to host Israeli-Palestinian talks in Moscow, a statement from the Israeli PM’s press service said. “[Netanyahu] presented Israel’s position whereby he is always ready to meet [Abbas] without preconditions and is therefore considering the Russian president’s proposal and the timing for a possible meeting,” the statement reads, as cited by Reuters news agency. The statement came after Netanyahu held talks with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Envoy to the Middle East, Mikhail Bogdanov. If agreed upon, the talks would be the first between the two leaders in several years, amid the ongoing rift in the region. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there is currently no agreement regarding the talks. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has accepted an offer to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Moscow, though the exact date of the meeting is yet to be determined, Palestinian Ambassador to Moscow Abdel Hafiz Nofal told RIA Novosti on Monday. “There is an agreement in principle to meet in Moscow, however, there are still some points that need to be settled. There is no information available about the timing of the meeting,” the ambassador said. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said that he doubts Netanyahu is ready to fulfill the conditions needed for the talks to take place. Israel must stop building settlements in the West Bank, as well as release a number of Palestinian detainees, he said. “In this framework we do not oppose holding the meeting […] between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Benjamin Netanyahu under the aegis of Russia. But it seems to us that Netanyahu is not currently ready for such a step,” al-Maliki said, according to Al Ayam newspaper, as cited by Sputnik.

According to the report, the video shows the militants fighting under the banner of ISIS advancing on Syrian rebel positions in the volatile Daraa province where Syrian military troops have fought with opposition forces throughout the Syrian civil war. By confiscating heavy artillery weaponry, including tanks, Islamic State has allegedly sought to strengthen its influence in the region adjacent to Israel’s northern border. Syria Headline: Multiple bomb blasts in Syrian cities kill at least 43
A string of bombings, including a suicide attack claimed by the Islamic State group, struck in and around several Syrian cities on Monday, killing at least 43 people, mainly in government-controlled areas. The SANA news agency reported blasts around the coastal city of Tartus, Homs, Damascus, and Hasakeh. The attacks were timed closely together, but authorities have not determined whether they were linked. The IS group claimed responsibility for the blast in Hasakeh.
Attackers detonated two bombs along the international coastal highway to the government stronghold of Tartus, SANA said, killing 35. A car bomb at the Arzoneh bridge was followed by a suicide bomber, who targeted a crowd that was gathering. The city, a stronghold of support for President Bashar Assad, is home to a major Russian naval base. The Observatory said the twin blasts killed 35 people, including an army colonel, and wounded dozens more.
The governor of Homs province said a car bomb struck a military checkpoint in the provincial capital, killing three soldiers and a civilian, and wounding 10 others.
One of Monday’s attacks took place in the heavily guarded suburb of Sabbourah, marking a major security breach. SANA said the attack killed one person, while the opposition-run Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three people were killed.
An Islamic State attacker on a motorcycle blew himself up in the northeastern city of Hasakeh, killing eight, SANA said.

The Syrian Army has regained control over three military academies in Aleppo, cutting off the supply route used by militants in the eastern part of the city. RT’s Lizzie Phelan talked to the soldiers who’ve been taking the city back, stone by stone. “Sheikh Said neighborhood is the main gate to East Aleppo that is under the control of terrorists,” a soldier told RT. The army, backed by aerial and artillery attacks, managed to recapture the strategic complex comprising of three military academies in the Ramosa district, on Aleppo’s southwestern outskirts, on Sunday. The battle was a tough one, the soldiers said. “[The militants] were using TOW, 22mm anti-air craft guns, mortars, rocket launchers, tanks and hell canons,” another soldier said. The complex had been held by rebels – mainly consisting of Jaish Al-Fateh militants, previously known as Al-Nusra Front – since early August, when they broke through the pro-government army lines. Over the past few weeks, the army has engage in heavy fighting to retake the area, as it held the key to Aleppo’s east. Kurdish Headline: Turkey attacks Syrian Kurdish protesters near Kobane, two killed and 97 injured
At least two civilians were killed and 97 more were injured after Turkey started to shoot gas grenades and bullets against Syrian Kurdish protestors near Kobane that resisted Turkish attempts to build a barrier wall on the border. People of Kobane on Sunday buried those killed by Turkish fire, amid condemnation to Turkey’s intervention in Syria and their attempt to build a barrier wall on the borderline. Bazan Ehmed (17) and Ehmed Hesen (16), two victims of the Turkish security forces, were buried in Kobane where hundreds of people gathered to show support to their families. In the meantime, protests continued on Sunday, but no civilians were injured. Turkey says the aim of the wall is to secure the Turkish border after terrorist attacks hit Turkey, but Kurds reject this as an excuse to create obstacles for the Kurds to create an autonomous region in Syria.

Headline: After Jarablus, Turkish army entering Syria’s Aleppo
After capturing the Syrian border city of Jarablus, Turkish army forces continued their advance and entered Aleppo province, military sources reported on Sunday. “At least 20 Turkish tanks and five armoured vehicles, accompanied by a large number of Turkish troops, have arrived in the northern countryside of Aleppo province,” spokesman for the Shamiya Front rebel group Saleh al-Zein told ARA News. Also, hundreds of rebels from the Turkey-backed Sultan Murad Brigade and other Turkmen rebel factions accompanied the Turkish army in the advance towards Aleppo. “The Turkish forces and allies have taken over al-Rai town north of Aleppo, turning the town into a military zone after claiming to have expelled ISIS militants from the area,” rebel spokesman al-Zein told ARA News. “However, there has been no fight between the Turkish forces and ISIS in al-Rae, which shows that ISIS has actually handed the town over to Turkey,” he added. As night fell, another loud explosion was heard in Kabul, followed by gunfire. There was no immediate word on the cause of the blast or details of any casualties. Meanwhile, Taliban and Afghan officials confirmed that the jihadist group overran the district of Omna in the eastern province of Paktika after Afghan forces retreated earlier today. The district is the second in the east to fall to the Taliban in the past week as the group continues to press operations in all areas of the country.

Headline: Brazil: Police use tear gas at anti-Temer protest
Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Brazil to demonstrate against the government. Organisers said 50,000 people – a record number – turned out in Sao Paulo alone for a seventh day of protests against the new President Michel Temer. Mr Temer took office after Dilma Rousseff was removed from the presidency in an impeachment trial. The rally began peacefully but police used tear gas, stun grenades and water cannon as clashes broke out at the end. They said they had been forced to take the measures to avoid vandalism. Several people were reportedly injured including a BBC journalist. Some protesters responded by throwing bottles and stones at riot police, and building and setting fire to barricades. Mr Temer said the protests were “small groups, not popular movements of any size”. Brazil’s Senate voted to remove Dilma Rousseff from office last week, for manipulating government accounts to hide a shortfall in the government’s budget. It put an end to the 13 years in power of her left-wing Workers’ Party. Ms Rousseff had denied the charges.

Headline: Islamic State’s Sahara branch claims first attack in Burkina Faso
Islamic State forces loyal to Adnan Abu Walid al Sahrawi, the emir of the Islamic State’s Sahara branch, claimed an attack in Burkina Faso yesterday according to Mauritanian news agency Al Akhbar. The claim, which has not yet been confirmed in a statement from the Islamic State, marks the first time this fledgling branch has claimed an attack in its one year of existence. Al Akhbar, which has previously published statements from Sahrawi and other Saharan-based jihadists, reports that Sahrawi sent a message claiming that an attack on Sept. 2 in Burkina Faso, near the borders with Niger, was the work of his men. The assault, which occurred on a Burkinabe gendarmerie post in Markoye, left a border agent and a civilian dead. If confirmed, this would mark the first operation claimed by the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). However, the group has issued threats to North African states in the past. In May, Sahrawi sent an audio statement to Al Jazeera in which he threatened “attacks on the United Nations mission in Western Sahara, Western tourists in Morocco, the headquarters of Moroccan security, and on foreign companies,” according to the report.

An apparent terrorist attack in Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown, which is normally known for its public safety, will escalate the government’s battle with violent Muslim rebels and could change the course of decades of civil conflict. Terrorist group Abu Sayyaf has taken credit for a bombing late Friday at a night market in Davao that killed 14 people and injured 70, according to Philippine news reports. Some reports say the group retracted its statement. The bombing is the first major retaliation after Duterte – known as a crime fighter unafraid of using extrajudicial violence — took office June 30 and began strikes against Abu Sayyaf in its stronghold near the southern island Mindanao. Those attacks killed 12 troops and 22 rebels last month. The same group is known for kidnapping foreigners, including a Canadian national who was beheaded in April.

Headline: How Syria, Ukraine crises tie in with US elections
Vladimir Putin has mobilized military forces in Crimea and on Ukraine’s northern and eastern borders. He has raised the level of fighting in eastern Ukraine to levels not seen in over a year and then arranged a ceasefire. He has moved advanced air defense systems into Crimea and is raising new Russian divisions near Ukraine. Analysts are baffled. Some note that this unprecedented mobilization makes little sense if Putin does not mean to fight Ukraine soon. Others dismiss it as the normal activities of a great power’s military. Neither view is correct. There is nothing normal about this mobilization, but neither does Putin desire a war with Ukraine. He intends, rather, to use this mobilization and escalation of conflict to create leverage to weaken EU sanctions, destabilize the Ukrainian government, undermine NATO, and present the next American president with a series of faits accomplis. He is likely to succeed in all these aims.

Israel is weighing the possibility of permitting representatives of the prosecution of the International Criminal Court to visit Israel and the Palestinian Authority in the coming weeks, senior officials in Jerusalem told Haaretz. The visit would be in the context of a preliminary inquiry into Palestinian complaints against Israel’s 2014 Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, and settlement construction in the West Bank, according to the officials, who requested anonymity due to the issue’s sensitivity. The aim of the visit by representatives of ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda’s office would be to engage in a dialogue about the prosecution’s work, Israel’s legal system and the preliminary inquiry process, the officials said. The officials stressed that the delegation would not gather any evidence or look into the Palestinian complaints. Their goal, instead, was what the prosecutors call “outreach and education.”

Syria Headline: Syrian rebels destroy helicopter in Hama offensive
Areas of Syria’s Hama province captured by Syrian insurgents came under heavy air attack on Thursday as government forces sought to counter a major rebel assault in an area of strategic importance to President Bashar al-Assad. The rebel thrust in Hama marks a new challenge to Assad and his allies in a part of Syria where he has tried to consolidate his grip on power against a more than five-year-old insurgency. The attack that began on Tuesday is the biggest coordinated rebel offensive in Hama province since 2014, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group. The Observatory said at least 25 people including six children had been killed in the air strikes overnight. Syrian state television said the air force had carried out “concentrated strikes” against what it described as terrorists in the area, saying tens of them had been killed. An official in one of the rebel factions waging the attack, Jaish al-Nasr, said both Syrian and Russian jets were involved in what he described as heavy air strikes. Russia has been bombing anti-Assad forces for almost a year.

Syria Headline: Syria regime threatens besieged Damascus town with “total war”
Syria’s government secured a deal to restore its authority over another rebellious Damascus suburb on Thursday. The Syrian capital’s western suburb of Moadamiyeh, which a UN report said was gassed with toxic sarin in 2013, has suffered a three-year government siege that left its estimated 28,000 residents with dwindling food and medical supplies. On Thursday, Moadamiyeh’s residents agreed to let President Bashar Assad’s government restore its security presence and political institutions in the suburb, according to Hassan Ghadour, a resident and leading negotiator of the deal. Ghadour said 200 gunmen who did not wish to give up their arms would be allowed safe passage to rebel-held areas in Syria’s northwestern Idlib and Aleppo provinces. The implementation to the agreement is expected to begin Friday. A local activist in the suburb, Dani Qappani, said the residents had no desire to negotiate with Assad’s government but that their “circumstances grew too difficult.”

Iraq Headline: ISIS fighters bomb Iraqi town’s pipelines leaving rivers of oil and streets on fire- PHOTOS
Fleeing ISIS fighters tried to raze an Iraqi town to the ground by flooding the streets with oil and setting it alight. The murderous jihadists had been forced to retreat from Qayyara by Iraqi soldiers, in the latest US-backed push towards Mosul in the north of the country. But as they fled, ISIS bombed pipelines and set fire to nearby oil wells, creating an endless cloud of black smoke that blocked out the sun and left the town shrouded in darkness. The Iraq military’s official Twitter account posted images of the aftermath, showing the streets of Qayyara flooded with black oil, some of them on fire. The apocalyptic scenes brought back imagery from the 1991 Persian Gulf War, when Iraqi military forces torched Kuwaiti oil wells while retreating from advancing coalition forces.

Iraq Headline: Nine Iraq forces killed in clashes with ISIS north of Baghdad
Fighters from the ISIS group killed nine members of the Iraqi security forces in clashes that broke out in a remote area north of Baghdad, security officials said Friday. The clashes broke out when ISIS fighters based in the mountain range attacked army and police forces in an area called Mutaibijah, 110 kilometers (70 miles) north of Baghdad. The area lies on the banks of the Udhaim river, near the mountain hideouts where pockets of extremists remained after Iraqi forces reconquered most regions east of the Tigris in 2015 and 2016. “We have nine killed and 24 wounded among the security forces,” an army lieutenant colonel from the Samarra operations command told AFP. “The attack started around 10:00 p.m. last night,” he said. A lieutenant colonel in the federal police said “Daesh (ISIS) fighters came down the river and down the mountain to attack security checkpoints.” He said that ISIS fighters eventually pulled back and that the security forces were back in control of the area.

Headline: Erdogan: Syrian Kurd militia didn’t move east of Euphrates
Turkey has swept ISIS militants and Kurdish YPG militia from an area of northern Syria, but Syrian Kurdish forces have still not met a Turkish demand to withdraw to the east of the Euphrates river, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday. Erdogan told a news conference early on Friday that the operation dubbed “Euphrates Shield” had been successful in clearing ISIS and Kurdish YPG from a 400-sq-km (150-square mile) area. But he dismissed claims that the Kurdish YPG, which Ankara calls a terrorist group, had withdrawn to a Kurdish-controlled canton to the east of the Euphrates River. The YPG says it has done so and US officials agree that is mostly the case. The outlawed Kurdish militant PKK has squandered the opportunity for a political peace process with Turkey by continuing its insurgency against Ankara, Turkey’s prime minister said on Friday. The autonomy-seeking Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has launched a spate of attacks since a ceasefire broke down last year, returning to arms in its three-decades-long insurgency in southeast Turkey.

The Obama administration may have secretly agreed to waive restrictions placed on the Iranian regime’s nuclear program as part of the landmark 2015 deal. According to a soon-to-be-published report by the Institute for Science and International Security, the US and fellow negotiating partners secretly agreed to permit the Islamic regime to ignore some restrictions on its nuclear program, thereby paving the way for the removal of economic sanctions against the rogue state. The report, which was reviewed by Reuters, was co-authored by the institute’s president, David Albright, cites government officials who participated in the negotiation process prior to the signing of the deal last July. Albright, himself a former United Nation’s weapons inspector, told Reuters the US and its allies had colluded to create “loopholes” for the Iranian regime. “The exemptions or loopholes are happening in secret, and it appears that they favor Iran,” he said.

Headline: Iran, Afghanistan Joining Forces to Fight Creation of ‘Islamic Caliphate’
Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani has paid an official visit to Iran to discuss a raft of hot-button issues, including closer security cooperation and a joint fight against terrorism. During his talks in Tehran with his Iranian colleague Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Afghan foreign minister said that a stable and secure Afghanistan was a strategically important factor in bilateral relations, and prioritized regular consultations and information exchanges between the two countries. Meanwhile, the security situation in Afghanistan keeps worsening with the eastern districts of Paktia province being besieged by Taliban and Daesh terrorists, and the strategic Khanabad district in the country’s northwestern Kunduz province changing hands in continuous firefights between government forces and jihadist terrorists. The situation in western Afghanistan is equally worrisome with anti-Iranian Daesh forces posing a serious threat to Tehran, which is now recruiting local Afghan refugees to fight the terrorist organization. In an interview with Sputnik, Iranian political analyst Pirmohammad Mollazehi underscored the all-importance of closer security exchanges between Iran and Afghanistan. Sept. 2, 2016
Headline: Pentagon: IS Down to 3 Neighborhoods in Former Libyan Stronghold
Islamic State forces have been reduced to just three neighborhoods in Sirte, Libya, a city once considered to be a stronghold for the group, a Pentagon spokesman said Thursday as the U.S. extended its air campaign over the city for up to another 30 days. The U.S. military estimates that IS forces in Sirte now number fewer than 200, Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis told reporters. “They’re literally with their backs against the ocean at this point,” Davis said. Libyan ships have secured the waters around Sirte in case IS fighters try to escape by sea, he added. The U.S. started conducting airstrikes in and around Sirte on August 1 at the request of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA). These strikes — 108 in total as of Thursday — have aided forces aligned with the U.N.-backed government in Libya as they push IS out of the city. Unlike strikes against IS in Syria and Iraq, “each and every one of those strikes” was requested by the GNA, Davis said.

Headline: ISIS’s Campaign in Europe: July 16-August 18, 2016
ISIS’s network in Europe accelerated small scale attacks in July and August 2015 as part of a deliberate transition to the next phase of its global war between Muslim and non-Muslims. The recent death of ISIS’s spokesman, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, the primary architect of ISIS’s global campaign, will likely not suppress this terror campaign. On the contrary, Adnani’s death may provoke additional attacks in the region intended to punish the West. ISIS-linked militants carried out numerous attacks since July 5 2016 in Europe, using diverse weapons such as a truck, a bomb, and knives and machetes. Political responses to these attacks, such as new restrictions on Muslim ways of dress and places of worship, support ISIS’s goal to polarize the West and encourage increased disillusionment among Muslim communities. ISIS focused its attacks during this period on Germany, the center of Europe where ISIS can exploit political tension over refugees and accelerate its polarization and destabilization campaign. The trend of small-scale attacks suggests that ISIS instructed individual attackers and handlers to conduct semi-autonomous attacks rather than await instruction to coordinate larger spectacular attacks. The increase in rapid claims of these attacks by ISIS’s Amaq News Agency suggests that ISIS is also instructing attackers and handlers on how to communicate their operational plans beforehand, a sign of control and adaptation. Larger spectacular attacks remain a threat to Europe despite this trend.

Headline: Gabon violence: More than 1,000 arrested after disputed election
Security forces in Gabon have arrested more than 1,000 people during a second day of violence following disputed presidential elections. Three people were killed in clashes in the capital, Libreville. Protests began after the announcement that President Ali Bongo had been narrowly re-elected in Wednesday’s vote. Opposition leader Jean Ping, who is in hiding, told the BBC that his party headquarters had been bombed. The UN, US and former colonial power France have called for restraint and greater transparency about the results. Security forces cracked down after protesters attacked the national assembly building late on Wednesday, tearing down its main gate and setting parts of it on fire. On Thursday the building’s facade was blackened by fire and its windows were smashed. Burned-out cars littered nearby streets. “Democracy does not sit well with an attack on parliament,” Mr Bongo said. Police used tear gas to prevent crowds from gathering there again and arrested people as they emerged from remains of the building. The BBC’s Charles Stephane Mavoungou in Libreville says people there have been unable to access the internet.

A suicide bomber has attacked a court in the northern Pakistani city of Mardan, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 50, officials say. The attacker threw a hand grenade before running into the court area and detonating a bomb, police told the BBC. Also on Friday, four suicide bombers targeted a Christian neighbourhood near Peshawar before being shot dead. Both attacks took place in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and were claimed by Taliban faction Jamaat-ul-Ahrar. Ijaz Khan, deputy inspector general of police for Mardan district, told reporters three lawyers and two police officers were among the dead at the courthouse. The suicide bomber attempted to reach the court’s bar room, where several lawyers had congregated – but was shot by police before he could enter, Mr Khan said. The president of the Mardan Bar Association, Amir Hussain, told reporters he was in a neighbouring room when the blast happened. “There was dust everywhere, and people were crying [out] loud with pain,” he said.

Headline: Russia will deploy a division of troops about 50 miles from the US
At a recent event, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that a division of troops would be stationed in Chukotka, Russia’s far-east region, just slightly more than 50 miles from Alaska. “There are plans to form a coastal defense division in 2018 on the Chukotka operational direction,” said Shoigu. He said that the deployment was “to ensure control of the closed sea zones of the Kuril Islands and the Bering Strait, cover the routes of Pacific Fleet forces’ deployment in the Far Eastern and Northern sea zones, and increase the combat viability of naval strategic nuclear forces.” Japan and Russia dispute ownership of the northern Kuril Islands, where Russia plans to deploy missile-defense batteries. The Bering Strait is the narrow waterway that separates Alaska from Russia. Broadly, Russia has taken the lead in militarizing and exploring the Arctic region, as melting ice caps open up new shipping lanes between the East and West. In that context, the deployment of a division to the sparsely populated Chukotka region makes sense. In the past, Russia has bemoaned NATO and US troop deployments near to its borders. How the US will respond to this deployment remains to be seen.

Headline: 94,391,000 Not In Labor Force
The national debt hit $19.5 trillion for the first time ever this week, a little more than seven months after it hit the $19 trillion mark. The debt clocked in at $19.51 trillion at the end of Wednesday, the Treasury Department reported Thursday afternoon. Precise debt figures on any given day are released on the following business day. The national debt hit $19 trillion for the first time ever on Jan. 29. When President Obama took office in early 2009, the total debt was $10.63 trillion, which means it has almost doubled under his watch. The Congressional Budget Office reported in August that the debt-to-GDP ratio will match levels not seen since 1950 by the end of the current fiscal year. The debt is the sum total of annual budget deficits, plus interest, and those annual deficits are soon expected to rise again in the coming years. President Obama has boasted of cutting the annual budget deficits by more than two-thirds over the last few years. But it was under his administration that those deficits soared north of $1 trillion, and only in the last few years did they return to the highest deficit levels ever seen under his predecessor, President George W. Bush.

Headline: The Coming Storm for Global Financial Markets
Global growth is weak, and will be eroded further by Brexit. Oil prices are low, and likely to plunge further. The world has excess capacity and a wage-depressing labor surplus. Corporate profits are shaky. And deflation is laying bare the impotence of central banks. So where would you logically expect financial markets to be going, given that economic, financial and political environment? You’d expect to see increased demand for safe-haven U.S. Treasuries, a soaring dollar, falling commodity prices, and increasing investor aversion to junk bonds, emerging market debt and equities and other low-quality securities. But that’s not the case. The 10-year Treasury yield has been flat for months, as has the dollar against the euro. Commodity prices in general and oil in particular have risen this year. Money has poured into emerging market bonds as well as junk bonds, depressing their yields. How can current security prices be justified in the face of the fundamental picture, at least as I see it?

Earlier this month, Puerto Rico announced its first death from Guillain-Barre syndrome, a condition causing temporary paralysis that, in this case, was linked to the Zika virus. Now incidences of Guillain-Barre are said to have risen in seven countries in tandem with outbreaks of Zika, per a study in the New England Journal of Medicine. The New York Times notes that while the CDC remains wary of saying Zika can cause GBS (it simply says GBS is “strongly associated” with Zika), this research offers further evidence that Zika may indeed be responsible—worrisome news, as about 500 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean are vulnerable to becoming infected with it. “It’s pretty obvious that in all seven sites there is a clear relationship,” says lead author Dr. Marcos A. Espinal of the Pan American Health Organization.

A woman beaten to death with a lamp in an act of domestic violence. A man fatally stabbed during an argument outside a tavern. A man shot and killed while returning from a funeral for his grandfather. Those are just three of the 24 homicides recorded in August — what Milwaukee police have termed the “deadliest month” in 25 years. It is the highest monthly total since July 1991, when the victims of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer were discovered, Milwaukee police said. “We’ve had a slight increase in domestic violence homicides this year, but the biggest driver of our homicides is arguments and fights and retaliation among people with criminal records,” Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn said Thursday. “Some of our challenge is simply consistently being able to deter armed offending through the criminal justice system,” he added. “The penalties are too weak.” Although Chicago has captured national headlines for having its deadliest month in nearly two decades, Milwaukee had a higher per capita rate of killings (4 per 100,000 people) in August compared with its neighbor to the south (3.3 per 100,000 people), according to Milwaukee police.

At least four suicide bombers attacked a Christian neighbourhood in northwestern Pakistan early on Friday, killing at least one security guard, the military said. Authorities “promptly responded” and all four attackers were dead, army spokesman Lt. General Asim Bajwa said in a message on social network Twitter. In a separate statement, the military’s information wing said one security guard of the Christian residential area was killed at the start of the attack, at 5:30 a.m. The attackers, wearing suicide vests and carrying firearms, exchanged fire with security forces and were killed, the statement said. Two solders, a policeman and two civilian security guards were wounded, it added. The official said the attackers might have been attempting to enter an adjacent security installation, by exploiting weaker security arrangements in the residential area.

Headline: Hermine is 1st hurricane to hit Florida coast in a decade
Hermine tore across northern Florida on Friday as the first hurricane to hit the state in more than a decade, killing one person, raising a storm surge that destroyed beachside buildings and toppling trees into homes. As the system pushed into Georgia, it knocked down many power lines in both states. Hundreds of thousands of people were without electricity. Hermine was expected to move into the Carolinas and roll up the East Coast, bringing the potential for drenching rain and devastating flooding through the Labor Day weekend. As of 11 a.m. EDT Friday, it had weakened from its peak wind speed of 80 mph to a tropical storm. The National Hurricane Center issued tropical storm watches and warnings as far north as the Connecticut-Rhode Island border. “Anyone along the U.S. East Coast needs to be paying close attention this weekend,” center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said. A homeless man in Marion County, south of Gainesville, was killed when he was hit by a tree, Gov. Rick Scott said at a news conference. Although damage was still being assessed, the governor said he knew of no other “major issues” besides the power outages and damaged roads. It was unclear whether he had received word of damage to remote and sparsely populated beach areas just south of the Big Bend, where the peninsula meets the Panhandle.

Headline: UN Security Council to convene meeting on Israeli settlement building
The UN Security Council will hold a meeting on October 14 to address Israeli settlement building. News of the upcoming meeting emerged after UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov appeared in front of the Security Council on Monday and slammed Israel for continuing to build settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Mladenov said Israel’s actions go against the Quartet’s recommendations, which were published in July. The Quartet’s report outlined what the group believes are the threats to the two-state solution and offered practical recommendations to enable an eventual return to peace negotiations. “Its recommendations continue to be ignored, including by a surge in Israeli settlement- related announcements and continuing demolitions,” Mladenov said. “We heard that settlement construction is not an impediment to a two-state solution; that ‘a few houses’ are not a problem for peace,” he added.

Headline: Israel Approves Hundreds of Homes in West Bank Settlements
Israel approved on Wednesday the construction of hundreds of new housing units in West bank settlements and retroactively legalized dozens more. The plan has already been approved at the political level. The Civil Administration’s High Planning Committee approved the building of 234 homes in Elkana, which are designated by the plan as a nursing home, 31 homes in Beit Arye, and 20 homes in Givat Ze’ev. The committee has also legalized 178 housing units which were built in Beit Arye the 1980s. Another plan to build 30 housing units in the Efrat settlement was expected to be approved during the meeting but was ultimately not discussed. According to sources familiar with the details, the plan was pulled from the agenda at Netanyahu’s request due to fear of U.S. pressure. According to one source, Netanyahu told the parties involved in promoting the plan that it would be frozen until after the U.S. presidential election in November, and its future will depend on the election’s result. The Civil Administration confirmed that the plan was removed from the agenda in the last minute.

Headline: US appeals court tosses out $654 million verdict against PLO
A US appeals court on Wednesday tossed out a $654 million jury verdict against the Palestine Liberation Organization for terrorist attacks in the early 2000s in Israel that killed or wounded Americans, saying the US courts lack jurisdiction because the attacks were random and not aimed at the United States. The United States government said last year that the case threatened to financially destabilize the Palestinian government and harm the region. Wednesday’s written decision by the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said the attacks in 2002 and 2004, which killed 33 people and wounded hundreds more, were “unquestionably horrific.” But the three-judge panel said they were fortuitous and “not expressly aimed at the United States.” The decision, written by US District Judge John G. Koeltl, who was sitting on the court temporarily, said offices maintained by the PLO and Palestinian Authority in Washington were used to promote the Palestinian cause in speeches and media appearances and to retain a lobbying firm. It said those purposes were insufficient to give US courts jurisdiction over the groups for random attacks abroad.

Headline: Bomb blast in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley kills one, wounds 11: Red Cross
A bomb blast on a road in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley on Wednesday killed at least one person and wounded 11 other people, the Lebanese Red Cross said. The explosion took place at a roundabout near the city of Zahle, the source added, without elaborating. Local media reported the person killed was a woman, but gave no further details. TV images from the scene showed broken glass littering the road near the roundabout, and people trying to treat someone lying on the ground with what looked like a head injury. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Several security incidents have hit Lebanon in recent months, including an attack by eight suicide bombers who blew themselves up killing five other people in a Christian village in the north in June. Lebanon has been repeatedly jolted by the five-year-old civil war in neighboring Syria, where powerful Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah is fighting on the side of President Bashar al-Assad.

The UN Security Council warned Tuesday that violations of the cessation of hostilities agreement between Lebanon and Israel could lead to a new conflict “that none of the parties or the region can afford.” The council’s warning came in a resolution adopted unanimously Tuesday extending the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon that monitors the cessation of hostilities until Aug. 31, 2017. It maintained the mission’s ceiling at 15,000 troops, supported by international and local civilian staff. The council expressed concern “at the limited progress made towards the establishment of a permanent cease-fire.” It urged all parties “to make every effort to ensure that the cessation of hostilities is sustained, exercise maximum calm and restraint and refrain from any action or rhetoric that could jeopardize the cessation of hostilities or destabilize the region.”

The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched a major offensive inside Deir Ezzor City on Wednesday, targeting the government-controlled districts of Al-‘Arfi and Mouzafeen. ISIS began the offensive by sending three VBIEDs (vehicle borne improvised explosive device) towards the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) defenses at both the Mouzafeen and Al-‘Arfi districts; however, all three were destroyed before they could reach their intended targets. Following the failed VBIED attacks, the Islamic State terrorists simultaneously the Al-‘Arfi and Mouzafeen districts; this resulted in a series of intense firefights that ended with the militants retreating from one of the areas. According to a military source at the Deir Ezzor Airport, the Syrian Arab Army’s 137th Brigade seized a caged bulldozer from the Islamic State terrorists, while also destroying two of their armored vehicles that were mounted with anti-aircraft machine guns. The ISIS terrorists are now surrounded inside the Al-‘Arfi District after their other units withdrew from Al-‘Arfi earlier today.

Kurdish Headline: Erdogan tells US: Stop backing the Kurds
US-Turkish discord over the Turkish army’s onslaught on the Kurds of northern Syria reached a new low Wednesday, Aug. 30, when the presidential palace spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said in Ankara: “The US must revise its policy of supporting Kurdish forces.” The demand came after a senior US official called on “all the armed actors in the fight against the Islamic State in northern Syria to stand down,” in an effort to contain the new conflict dragging northern Syria into further chaos. The call was addressed equally to Ankara to freeze its military operations in Syria and to the Kurdish PYD-YPG militia to halt the flow of fraternal reinforcements for defending Mabij, the Syrian town the militia wrested from ISIS earlier this month with US assistance. debkafile’s military sources report that the Turkish army and Kurdish forces are already tensely aligned for a decisive battle over Manbij that will determine the outcome of the Turkish invasion of Aug. 24. ***see also Turkey below

Headline: Turkish Incursion into Northern Syria Signals Turning Point in Anti-ISIS Fight
Turkey is unraveling America’s anti-ISIS partner in northern Syria in order to position itself as a major power broker in planned operations to retake Raqqa City. Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) crossed into Syria to seize the ISIS held border town of Jarablus alongside numerous Turkish- and U.S.-backed Syrian armed opposition groups on August 24. The operation, titled Euphrates Shield, is a turning point in American-Turkish relations and the war against ISIS by fulfilling longstanding American demands for more Turkish involvement in the anti-ISIS fight. Euphrates Shield also aims to prevent the expansion of Kurdish control along the border, however. The U.S. ordered the Syrian Kurdish People’s Defense Forces (YPG) to withdraw to the east bank of the Euphrates River in accordance with Turkish demands at the start of the operation. Turkey is leveraging Syrian opposition groups it trusts in Jarablus and intentionally sidelining groups that joined the Syrian YPG-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), bringing U.S.- and Turkish- backed opposition factions into direct conflict with the American-backed SDF. The SDF opposed the Turkish incursion and attacked the joint Turkish-Syrian opposition force on August 27. A U.S. defense official announced that the two sides agreed to a “loose” truce on August 30. An unidentified Turkish military source, however, subsequently denied the existence of any such agreement. The Turkish intervention has meanwhile inspired local resistance against the SDF and YPG in Sunni Arab areas including Manbij City, south of Jarablus, and the northern Raqqa countryside. Turkey may exploit this local resistance to unseat the SDF from Manbij City and replace it with a military force that opposes the YPG.

Headline: Turkey hits out at US over Kurds comments
Headline: Russia calls on Turkey not to strike Syrian Kurds, others fighting IS
Headline: Iran urges Turkey to quickly end Syria intervention
Turkey has hit out at the United States over criticism of its ongoing role in the conflict in Syria. Turkish forces have targeted so-called Islamic State (IS) inside Syria, but have also gone after Kurdish fighters in the same region. The pursuit of Kurdish forces, whom Ankara considers terrorists, has led to criticism by the United States. Ankara contacted the US ambassador on Wednesday over comments the foreign ministry called “unacceptable”. A US military spokesman had expressed hopes on Tuesday that, rather than see Turkey pursue Kurdish fighters, “all parties involved are going to stop shooting at each other and focus” on IS. On Wednesday, Russia added its voice, with the foreign affairs ministry calling on Turkey to avoid strikes in Syria on opposition and ethnic groups fighting Islamic State, including Syrian Kurds. “Turkey is a sovereign state, it is a legitimate state,” said Turkey’s EU Affairs Minister Omer Celik. “To suggest it is on a par with a terrorist organisation and suggest there are talks between them, that a deal has been reached between them, this is unacceptable.”

Headline: Iran’s Khamenei says need to boost offensive military capabilities
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that Iran needs to boost its offensive military capabilities. “In order to secure our population, our country and our future we have to increase our offensive capabilities as well as our defensive capabilities,” he said at a military expo in Tehran where a number of top military officials gathered, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). The Shi’ite leader spoke a week after a U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots toward an Iranian fast-attack craft that had approached two U.S. ships, according to a Pentagon spokesman. The Pentagon also said that Iranian vessels had harassed a U.S. warship near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil and gas shipping channel, early last week. For its part, the Iranian military accused the United States of sending a drone into its air space on Monday, according to the Tasnim news agency. It said the drone left Iranian air space after a warning. President Hassan Rouhani, a pragmatist, has presided over a limited thaw in Iran’s relations with the West, with a 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers his most notable achievement. But Iran’s military and security services that answer to the hardline Khamenei continue to see Western states as adversaries. Khamenei also said that expanding defensive capabilities was necessary “so that oppressive powers feel threatened”, an allusion to the United States and key European allies.

Headline: Obama extends Libya bombing mission against ISIS, officials say
Headline: More than 100 US airstrikes against Islamic State in Libya in August
President Obama has extended the U.S. military’s combat mission in Libya for another month at the request of senior military leaders, two defense officials with knowledge of the order told Fox News. The decision keeps two U.S. Navy warships off the coast of Libya to continue striking ISIS and assist Libyan ground forces fighting the terror group in the coastal city of Sirte. One of the U.S. warships had been scheduled to go to the Persian Gulf in September to begin airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq and Syria and keep an eye on Iran, a week after four provocations between Iranian gunboats and U.S. Navy ships — one of which resulted in warning shots being fired by a U.S. warship. The other, a U.S. Navy destroyer, was supposed to head to the Black Sea near Russia next month. But both plans will be put on hold, according to one defense official. USS Wasp, a large amphibious assault ship loaded with over 1,000 Marines as well as Harrier jets and Cobra attack helicopters, will remain off the coast of Libya – as will her escort ship, USS Carney, a guided-missile destroyer.

Headline: Car bomb outside Somali president’s palace kills 12
At least 12 people, including soldiers and civilians, were killed in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Tuesday when a car bomb claimed by Al-Shabab exploded outside the Presidential Palace and also damaged two nearby hotels, an official said. Information Minister Mohamed Abdi Hayir told state radio that a meeting of security officials was under way inside one of the hotels, the SYL, at the time of blast and that one minister and some state radio journalists were injured in the attack. The hotel is frequented by government officials and police said it believed the facility was the likely target. The SYL and another hospitality facility, both located near the Presidential Palace, were partially destroyed by the blast, Major Mohamed Ali, a police officer, told Reuters. “The blast killed 12 (people) including soldiers and civilians and at least 30 others were wounded,” Ali said.

A car driven by a suicide bomber has exploded after ramming the gates of the Chinese embassy in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, officials say. The suicide bomber died and three embassy employees, all Kyrgyz nationals, were injured, Deputy PM Zhenish Razakov said. China’s foreign ministry condemned the bombing as an “extreme and violent attack”. No-one has yet said they were behind the suicide bombing. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said: “China is appalled and strongly condemns the violent act.” She said China had “demanded that Kyrgyz authorities take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel in Kyrgyzstan, launch a thorough investigation to find out the truth of the incident and harshly punish the perpetrators”.

Headline: Teenager killed in fresh Indian Kashmir clashes
A teenager was shot dead in Indian-administered Kashmir on Wednesday as thousands of protesters engaged in fresh clashes with security forces after weeks of deadly violence, police and witnesses said. Paramilitary troops fired live rounds as residents demonstrated against an earlier raid by soldiers searching for protest leaders in the northern village of Nadihal, a police officer said on condition of anonymity. “The boy died in the firing. Five other protesters also received bullet injuries,” the officer, who is not authorised to speak to the media, told AFP. Locals said he was aged 18. Protesters also clashed with troops who fired shotgun pellets and tear gas in other areas of the northern Himalayan region including in the main city of Srinagar, another senior police officer and witnesses said. “We have reports about 50 protesters were injured in Anantnag, mostly with pellets,” the police officer said of the southern town. Kashmir has been reeling from almost daily protests against Indian rule since the death of a popular rebel leader on July 8 in a gunbattle with soldiers. Some 70 civilians have been killed and thousands injured in the worst violence to hit the Muslim-majority territory since 2010. Two police officers have also died during the seven weeks of unrest. Residents also set fire on Wednesday to a lawmaker’s house in the southern area of Kulgam as they returned from a rally, a local police officer confirmed. No one was injured in the blaze.

Headline: Is Russia Conducting A Massive Mobilization Of Troops For An Invasion Of Ukraine?
A new wave of Russian aggression is looming on Ukraine’s horizon as Moscow amasses its army in Donbas, Crimea and along the border. Russia has amassed a 100,000 troops in occupied Crimea and separatist-held parts of Donbas as well as along the Ukrainian border. The divisions consist of tanks and airborne brigades, Ukraine’s military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said in an interview with RFE/RL, according to UNIAN. ‘There are some 40,000 troops in Donbas along the northern border and nearly 50,000-60,000 in the east. This group constantly changes and evolves’, Lysenko said. He added, approximately 700 tanks were located in militant-controlled bits of Donbas alone. ‘Any escalation of the conflict will have bloody consequences both for Russia and our side, so the Russian aggressor is weighing its strength. It is conducting a very thorough reconnaissance,’, Lysenko stated. On August 26 President Putin announced sudden combat readiness check of his army.

Headline: Russian Anti-Access and Area Denial
Russia has altered the security balance in the Black Sea, Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East by establishing large anti-access/area-denial (A2AD) exclusion zones. Russia’s power projection in these regions has been further extended by the deployment of the S-400 air defense system to Crimea in August 2016 and to Syria in November 2015.Advanced air defense systems create A2AD “bubbles” that prevent Russia’s opponents from establishing air supremacy in strategically significant theaters. The Baltic States, much of Ukraine and the Black Sea, northern Poland, Syria and parts of Turkey fall under Russian A2AD bubbles created by S-300 and S-400 air defense systems. Russia operates advanced air defense not only within its own territory, but from sites in Syria and occupied Crimea, as well as cooperatively through the Joint Air Defense Network in Belarus and Armenia. Russia can use these systems to impede the ability of the U.S. to defend its NATO allies by disrupting the ability of US air forces to access conflict zones in the event of a crisis.

Elite North Korean soldiers are being armed with “nuclear backpacks”, a source has claimed as tensions increase over the authoritarian state’s attempts at military escalation. An anonymous source told Radio Free Asia special units have been formed since March to carry the weapons and had been taking part in simulated training exercises with dummy bombs. “Outstanding soldiers were selected from each reconnaissance platoon and light infantry brigade to form the nuclear backpack unit the size of a battalion,” the source from North Hamgyong province was quoted as saying. The supposed weapons were said to weigh between 10 and 30 kilograms and be able to “spray radioactive material”, possibly uranium, on the enemy.

Singapore has confirmed 41 cases of the Zika virus which were locally transmitted. Most of those infected were foreign construction workers, and all lived or worked within the same region of the country, said the health ministry. None were known to have travelled to Zika-affected areas recently. Singapore declared its first imported Zika case in May, a 48-year-old local who had travelled to Brazil, where the outbreak started. On Saturday, it announced that a 37-year-old Malaysian woman had contracted the virus locally. She is the only confirmed female case so far. Thirty-six of the 41 cases announced on Sunday were foreign workers who worked in the same construction site. Work at the site has been halted after housekeeping was found to be “unsatisfactory with potential breeding habitats favourable to mosquito breeding”. The ministry said in a statement that it could not “rule out further community transmission, since more of those tested positive also live or work in other parts of Singapore”. “We expect to identify more positive cases,” it added.

Headline: Experts fear ISIS terrorist knifemen will target Western church for their next attack
Counter-terror experts fear ISIS extremists armed with knives will target a Western church for their next attack. Christian leaders are being warned to increase security and avoid wearing dog collars in public. New counter terrorism advice is being urgently issued to vicars and churches across the UK this week over fears an attack on British religious institutions is now likely. The new measures follow the murder of a priest by two ISIS terrorists in France last month, amid fears the same could now happen in the UK. Experts warn that a terrorist attack on churches “is coming.” Places of worship in the UK, which are ‘easy targets’ for extremists, are now being urged to take precautions and beef up security. A draft of the measures being issued and seen by Mirror Online – called Counter Terrorism Advice for Churches – urges religious leaders to prepare for incidents and to be on alert for attackers, who are likely to be armed with knives.

Headline: Christian Leader Arrested in Russia as Law Banning Evangelism Outside of Churches Goes Into Effect
The first reports of Christian leaders being arrested in Russia following the passing of new anti-terrorism laws that ban evangelism outside of churches have started coming in. The Moscow Times reports that Sergei Zhuravlyov, a representative of the Ukrainian Reformed Orthodox Church of Christ the Savior, was arrested earlier this month while he was preaching before the St. Petersburg Messianic Jewish community, and was charged with violating a provision of the law that bans illegal missionary activity. Law enforcement officials later told Interfax news agency that Zhuravlyov is being accused of “fomenting negative attitudes toward the Russian Orthodox Church,” and of having ties to the Ukrainian nationalist political party called Right Sector, which is banned in Russia. Ukraine and Russia remain in a state of conflict following the annexation of Crimea in 2014, which has also sparked violent clashes between Russia-backed separatists and government forces in the eastern parts of Ukraine.

Headline: An ‘Unprecedented’ Pair of Hurricanes Is Churning Toward Hawaii
In what’s being hailed a meteorological first, two back-to-back hurricanes are marching toward Hawaii, both of them threatening torrential rains and rip-roaring winds this week. The closer of the two, hurricane Madeline, could break a second meteorological record as the first hurricane to strike the Big Island since bookkeeping began in 1949. Rumbling west at approximately 9 mph, Madeline is currently packing Category 3 windspeeds of 120 mph. Its latest track has the storm passing south of the Big Island on Thursday, although as meteorologists Bob Henson and Jeff Masters point out over at Weather Underground, it’s too early to rule out the possibility of landfall on the island of Hawai’i. In any case, the storm is expected to bring heavy rains and 40 to 50 mph wind gusts to the island later this week. A hurricane watch is in effect for Hawaii County. “What’s concerning is that even if Madeline stays offshore, that’ll put the Big Island on the righthand side of the storm,” Henson told Gizmodo. “That’s more dangerous because of how winds rotate in a hurricane, and because those winds will be pushing up very high mountain slopes, which will squeeze out a torrential amount of rain.” Following closely on Madeline’s heels is Hurricane Lester, which also wields Category 3 windspeeds and is slowly gaining ground on its sister storm, moving west at 14 mph. Roughly 1,000 miles east of Madeline at the present, Lester is tracking in a more northwesterly direction, and is expected to pass several hundred miles north of Hawaii on Saturday. Nevertheless, this storm could also bring torrential rainfall and powerful surf to towns and cities that haven’t had a moment to catch their breath.

Headline: At Least 9 Dead as Typhoon Hits Northern Japan
At least nine elderly people were killed when their nursing home was flooded in northern Japan after Typhoon Lionrock dumped heavy rains on the area. The bodies of all nine residents were found at a nursing home in the town of Iwaizumi in Iwate prefecture, when police were checking another facility in the flooded neighborhood, said Takehiro Hayashijiri, an official at a prefectural disaster management division. Hayashijiri said identity of the bodies or other details, including whereabouts of their caretakers, were not known. NHK said the nursing home was for the residents with dementia. Japan’s NHK national broadcaster said authorities have found two more bodies in another town in Iwate. Its footage showed the nursing home partially buried in mud, surrounded by debris apparently washed down from the mountains. A car by the home was turned upside down. “We’re making a government-wide effort to assess the extent of damage,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters. The government sent Self-Defense Forces to help in the rescue and cleanup of the damage caused by the typhoon.

Priest is Chosen by Sanhedrin, Temple Service Could Be One Week Away
Headline: Sanhedrin Appoints High Priest in Preparation for Third Temple
A significant step was recently taken towards reinstating the Temple service when the nascent Sanhedrin selected Rabbi Baruch Kahane as the next Kohen Gadol (high priest). The selection was made as a precaution for Yom Kippur. If the political conditions should change, allowing the Jews access to the Temple Mount, they will be required by Torah law to bring the sacrifices. Rabbi Kahane is confident that if that should happen, Temple service could begin in less than one week. This year has already seen much Temple-oriented activity: the Temple Institute has created a registry of kohanim; established a school for educating men of the priestly class in the details of the Temple service; and performed reenactments on all the holidays, including the especially significant Passover sacrifice. “We do not need a miraculous occurrence like the sudden appearance of a Temple descending from heaven onto the Temple Mount to make this decision relevant,” explained Rabbi Weiss. “The only obstacle preventing the Temple service today is the political issue. If that should suddenly change, as it very well could, we would be required to begin the Temple service immediately. It is therefore necessary that we have a candidate prepared to fill the role of the High Priest, especially now that we have kohanim prepared to serve in the Temple.”

Syria Headline: Turkish air strikes kill at least 35 civilians in Syria
Turkey’s army and its allies thrust deeper into Syria on Sunday, seizing territory controlled by Kurdish-aligned forces on the fifth day of a cross-border campaign that a monitoring group said had killed at least 35 villagers. Turkish warplanes roared into northern Syria at daybreak and its artillery pounded what security sources said were sites held by Kurdish YPG militia, after the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported fierce overnight fighting around two villages. The Observatory, a Britain-based monitoring group with a network of sources in Syria, said Turkish-allied forces had seized two villages south of Jarablus, Jub al-Kousa and al-Amarna, that were held by militias loyal to the SDF. The fighting killed 20 civilians in Jub al-Kousa and 15 in al-Amarna, while scores more were wounded, the group said. The Observatory said rebels backed by Turkish tanks fought until dawn against rival militias allied to the SDF around al-Amarna. SDF-allied militia damaged three Turkish tanks, it said. Turkish security sources said warplanes and artillery had hit Kurdish YPG militia sites south of frontier town of Jarablus and towards Manbij, a city captured by Kurdish-aligned SDF this month in a U.S.-backed operation.

All the attackers were killed by security forces. “They were carrying Kalashnikovs, hand grenades. One of them blew himself up and the others were killed by the security forces,” the head of the central Euphrates operations command, Qais Khalaf, said. A member of the local council and a source at the provincial health directorate confirmed the death toll in the attack, which took place late on Sunday, and said at least 26 people were also wounded. A statement on the Amaq news agency that supports Daesh said the attack was carried out by four of its suicide fighters against a “gathering of Shiites.”

Kurdish Headline: PKK vows to defend YPG from Turkish invasion into northern Syria
Turkey on Monday said one of the key aims of its unprecedented operation in northern Syria was to prevent the creation of a corridor stretching from Iraq to the edge of the Mediterranean controlled by Kurdish militia. The goal of the operation was to rid the region of Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists and prevent the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia “from completing an end-to-end corridor” across Syria, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus was quoted as saying by NTV television. “If that happens, it means Syria has been divided,” he added. He added that all relevant parties had been informed of Turkey’s operation in Syria which began on Wednesday, including the regime of President Bashar al-Assad who is a bitter enemy of Ankara. “All the parties concerned had been informed… including the Damascus administration. They have been informed through Russia. We are sure of this,” he said. Russia is a key remaining ally of Assad. After the Turkish army sustained its first fatality of the operation at the weekend, Kurtulmus denied Turkey was at war.

Headline: All-out Turkish-Kurd war. Barazani goes to Tehran
Headline: No one has right to tell Turkey who it can fight
An all-out Turkish-Kurdish war has boiled over in northern Syria since the Turkish army crossed the border last Wednesday, Aug. 24 for the avowed aim of fighting the Islamic State and pushing the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia back. Instead of falling back, the Kurds went on the offensive and are taking a hammering. This raging confrontation has stalled the US-led coalition offensive against ISIS and put on indefinite hold any US plans for campaigns to drive the jihadists out of their Syrian and Iraqi capitals of Raqqa and Mosul. The Kurdish militia ground troops, who were backed by the US and assigned the star role in these campaigns, are now fully engaged in fighting Turkey. And, in another radical turnaround, Iraqi Kurdish leaders (of the Kurdish Regional Republic) have responded by welcoming Iran to their capital, in retaliation for the US decision to join forces with Turkey at the expense of Kurdish aspirations. The KRG’s Peshmerga are moreover pitching in to fight with their Syrian brothers. Together, they plan to expel American presence and influence from both northern Syria and northern Iraq in response to what they perceive as a US sellout of the Kurds. debkafile’s military analysts trace the evolving steps of this escalating complication of the Syrian war and its wider impact

Tehran has deployed a recently delivered Russian-made long-range missile system to central Iran to protect its Fordo nuclear facility, state television said Sunday. Protecting nuclear facilities is paramount “in all circumstances” General Farzad Esmaili, the commander of Iran’s air defences, told the IRIB channel. “Today, Iran’s sky is one of the most secure in the region,” he added. A video showed an S-300 carrier truck in Fordo, raising its missile launchers toward the sky, next to other counter-strike weaponry. The images were aired hours after supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave a speech to air force commanders, including Esmaili, in which he stressed that Iranian military power was for defensive purposes only. “Continued opposition and hype on the S-300 or the Fordo site are examples of the viciousness of the enemy,” Khamenei said. “The S-300 system is a defence system not an assault one, but the Americans did their best for Iran not to get hold of it.” The Fordo site, built into a mountain near the city of Qom has stopped enriching uranium since the January implementation of a nuclear deal with world powers.

Headline: Afghan Forces Readying to Launch Offensive to Retake Eastern District
Afghan security forces are preparing to launch an operation to retake an eastern border district a day after it fell to the Taliban, officials said Sunday. The Islamist insurgency overran and captured Janikheil district in the eastern Paktia province on Saturday, and local authorities confirmed that dozens of Afghan forces were killed in the fighting. A spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, Dawlat Waziri, told VOA Sunday “enough” forces are in the area under the leadership of the regional crops commander and preparing to stage a counter-offensive to take back Janikhil. “It is not difficult to retake the district from the Taliban but security forces are moving carefully because the insurgents have heavily mined roads in the area,” Waziri noted, adding teams of experts are currently engaged in clearing the explosives. District governor Abdul Rahman Solamal told Afghanistan’s Tolo TV Sunday a prolonged presence of the Taliban in Janikheil would improve its mobility to threaten security in neighboring provinces. The governor insisted his repeated calls for urgent help were not responded to, leading to the fall of Janikheil and he confirmed killing of at least 30 Afghan security forces in fierce battles after around 1,200 Taliban insurgents launched a decisive assault on Friday night. Janikheil sits at a key transit route that includes links to neighboring Khost province and Pakistan.

Headline: Afghanistan Partial Threat Assessment: August 28, 2016
Taliban militants are successfully expanding their territorial control across several regions of Afghanistan during their 2016 summer offensive, Operation Omari. The ANSF’s counter-offensive, Operation Shafaq has repulsed individual Taliban operations, such as the August offensive to isolate Helmand’s provincial capital, but the ANSF remain unprepared and under-resourced to conduct operations in more than one region simultaneously, despite NATO and U.S. assistance. Taliban offensives continue to limit the Afghan government’s control of terrain, thereby expanding ungoverned and remote areas where extremist networks such as ISIS and al Qaeda can reconstitute. The Afghan unity government faces a political crisis because of deadlines in September imposed by the original agreement through which it came to power. If Afghanistan remains on this course, global extremist organizations will reconstitute their sanctuaries in Afghanistan’s ungoverned spaces and pose enduring threats to U.S. national security.

Headline: Militants kill 3 Tunisian soldiers in ambush near Algerian border
Islamist militants killed three Tunisian soldiers and wounded seven others on Monday, opening fire on them with rifles and rocket propelled grenades after their patrol hit anti-tank landmines, an army spokesman said. Militants use the remote, mountainous region along the Algerian border as a base and the military has been hunting them down in the rugged terrain with patrols and air strikes on suspected training camps. Army spokesman Belhassen Ouslati said the three soldiers had been killed in the landmine blast and that clashes were continuing after the ambush in the Mount Sammama area. Since the 2011 uprising against autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia’s democracy has been held up as a model for a region wracked by violence and instability. But Islamist militants are one of the key challenges for the new Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, who officially took office on Monday. A local Al-Qaeda affiliate, Okba Ibn Nafaa, has been based in the Mount Chaambi range. Some of its leadership is Algerian while some foreign militants fled there after the French intervention in Mali. Militants occasionally carry out attacks on army patrols and checkpoints in the remote areas around Mount Chaambi, and occasionally raid local homes for food and supplies. ISIS has also drawn several thousands Tunisian militants to its ranks in Syria, Iraq and more recently in neighboring Libya. Tunisian authorities are concerned about returning jihadist carrying out attacks at home.

Headline: 10,000th Syrian Refugee Arrives in US for Resettlement
U.S. President Barack Obama’s goal of resettling 10,000 Syrian refugees in the U.S. this fiscal year will be achieved one month ahead of schedule Monday. “On behalf of the president and his administration, I extend the warmest of welcomes to each and every one of our Syrian arrivals, as well as the many other refugees resettled this year from all over the world,” National Security Advisor Susan Rice said in a statement. Obama’s resettlement program has emerged as a controversial issue in the U.S. presidential campaign after Republican nominee Donald Trump claimed Syrians are a potential security threat to the U.S. and proposed a ban on Muslims entering the country. Governors of more than 30 U.S. states have tried to block such refugees from settling in their states, despite having no authority to do so, according to legal experts.

Headline: Tension mounts across Venezuela as protesters gear up for Sept. 1 anti-Maduro rally
The political mood in Venezuela is starting to heat up as Sept. 1, the day picked for a massive pro-referendum rally, approaches. On that day, the opposition is hoping hundreds of thousands will descend on Caracas to demand a vote to decide whether President Nicolas Maduro should stay in power. They are calling it “La Toma de Caracas” or “The Caracas Takeover.” Last week, two separate groups started to walk hundreds of miles from the heartland all the way to the capital city encouraging Venezuelans to join, while Liliana Tintori, wife of jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, started a set of daily protests throughout the country. But days before the anticipated event on Sept. 1st, violence is already a concern. Government supporters are allegedly trying to boycott the different groups rallying, as more and more people seem to spontaneously be joining the initiative and walking to Caracas from their hometowns. On Saturday, the government issued a decree banning all private aircraft and drones over Venezuelan territory until Sept. 5 — no was explanation given, but many are connecting it to the ongoing rallies.

Headline: Twelve soldiers die in clash with Islamist militants in the Philippine south
Twelve soldiers, including a young lieutenant, were killed in a clash with Islamic State-linked rebels on a remote southern island in the Philippines, an army spokesman said on Monday as the army offensive entered its fifth day. Major Filemon Tan said five soldiers were also wounded in an 1-1/2 hour firefight in the jungles of Patikul town on Jolo island as troops pursued a large formation of the small but brutal Abu Sayyaf group. “The fighting was really intense, we lost 12 men,” Tan said. “You can really expect heavy casualty from both sides due to volume of fire from both sides. We don’t know how many from the enemy died but there could be more than 30 rebels.” A young army lieutenant leading the troops was killed in a rebel ambush. More than 20 Abu Sayyaf rebels had died since Thursday when the military launched an air-and-ground offensive in Patikul, an Abu Sayyaf stronghold, after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered troops to “destroy” the militant group. The Abu Sayyaf, known for kidnapping and beheading captives, has dogged successive Philippine governments, entrenching its network with vast sums of ransom money in what has become one of Asia’s most lucrative kidnapping rackets.

Headline: Indian troops use force to curb fresh protests in Kashmir
A fresh wave of violence erupts in Indian-controlled Kashmir where New Delhi’s troops have used force to curb renewed protests by pro-independence demonstrators. Fierce clashes broke out between Indian troops and hundreds of stone-pelting protesters in Srinagar, the region’s main city, on Monday. Protests and clashes were also reported in many other areas of the disputed valley. Angry protesters chanted slogans like “We want freedom” and “Go India, go back” as they hurled stones at government forces across the Muslim-majority region. Indian forces fired live ammunition, shotguns and tear gas at protesters who responded by hurling stones in the city of Srinagar and elsewhere. Several civilians were reportedly injured in the latest fierce clashes. Earlier, Indian authorities lifted a 52-day curfew in the Himalayan region except the town of Pulwama and some parts of Srinagar. However, they reimposed it later in most of Srinagar after anti-India protests and clashes erupted in several neighborhoods.

Economic collapseRevelation 6:5-6 & Daniel 2:41-43– Decline of the Euro“ When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” (Revelation) “Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay.” (Daniel 2:41-43)
Headline: Banks prepare for ‘economic nuclear winter’ Senior banking analyst warns of EU APOCALYPSE
A series of political shocks – including Britain’s vote to leave the EU – have led to fears the entire Union could crumble, the currency could collapse and economic nightmares could become a reality. Now it has been revealed this kind of “economic nuclear winter situation” is being prepared for by major banks. Weak corporate earnings, a banking crisis, and the Brexit vote have sparked disaster planning for the worst case scenarios in the second half of the year. A major lender told CNBC: “This could mean triggering Article 50, a referendum in other European nations leading to a break-up of the euro or sterling hitting below $1.20 or lower. “The banks are ready for anything now.” After the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in June, there have been talks a similar referendum may be held in France, the Netherlands and other countries. The source added: “Markets hate uncertainty and the events this year have unfortunately created a lot of mystery around what is going to happen next.”

Headline: Indestructible strain of E.coli ‘has reached the US’, researchers warn
Researchers have discovered America’s first untreatable strain of E. Coli bacteria. The unique new superbug has mobile genes that make it resistant to two types of antibiotics, which are now considered last-line defenses against life-threatening bacteria. It was discovered in a 76-year-old man who was treated in 2014 for a complicated urinary tract infection. Scientists have spent months analyzing the patient’s blood and urine samples to understand why his infection was so challenging to treat. And now, recent tests have shown the bacterium carried mcr-1, a gene that creates resistance to the last-ditch antibiotic colistin. It was also shown to carry blaNDM-5, a gene that blocks effectiveness of carbapenems. Carbapenems are considered medicine’s most reliable current antibiotics now that bacteria have found ways of outwitting other families of antibiotics. Previous studies have shown colistin resistance in E.coli infections. But the mobility of the genes of this specific strain is thought to be unprecedented.

Headline: Satan worship on rise in America
Satanists are not merely mystical eccentrics wearing black Gothic garb, sacrificing animals and operating in shady and secret societies. They are now ordinary people who call themselves ‘secular’ and praise reason and the individual freedom of thought. In the US, explicitly satanic groups have begun drawing attention to themselves in the context of public governmental ceremonies. Just this month, a member of the so-called Satanic Temple was allowed to make an opening prayer to Lucifer at a local council meeting in Alaska. Assembly members stood around in a circle while the Satanist asked them to “embrace the Luciferian impulse to eat of the tree of knowledge.” She then ended the surreal prayer with the words, “Hail Satan.” Thoughtfully, meeting attendees were reminded that they did not have to participate in the opening ritual. The Satanic Temple (TST) is a fairly new organization. Founded in 2013, it fights for political change by pointing out the ostensibly preferential treatment Christianity enjoys in politics. TST has seven chapters in the USA and Europe, and claims a membership of 100,000. One of the group’s objectives is to embed Lucifer in the public school system by establishing afternoon clubs, adoringly dubbed “After School Satan”, which is TST’s response to a Supreme Court ruling allowing evangelical programs to operate in schools. Currently nine clubs are listed under the program, including in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and Washington DC. The clubs will focus on “rationalism, free inquiry … and fun”, according to a promotional video. TST itself emphasizes that it seeks to implement “After School Satan” in locations where active Christian children’s clubs operate. TST said it is “not interested in operating After School Satan clubs in school districts that are not already hosting the Good News Club.”

“The government of Iran continues to engage in systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom, including prolonged detention, torture, and executions based primarily or entirely upon the religion of the accused.” — Report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.
A new study claims that as many as 40,000 Christians — including Muslims who wish to convert to Christianity — are being attacked and harassed by Muslims in migrant homes. According to the report, “Now in European asylum homes they are finding more and more that they are in as much danger from radical Muslims in Europe as they were in their home countries.”

Headline: Eruption of Iceland’s largest volcano feared after 2 earthquakes
Iceland was rocked by the largest earthquakes in 39 years, prompting fears its largest volcano will erupt after almost a century of dormancy. Two quakes — of magnitudes 4.5 at 1:41 a.m. and 4.6 at 1:47 a.m. Monday — rocked the crater of south Iceland’s Katla in the Myrdalsjokull glacier, the Icelandic Meteorological Office reported. They are the largest quakes to hit Katla since 1977, when a 5.1 earthquake was measured there, according to the Iceland Review. Katla, which is 90 miles east of Reykjavik. has not erupted since 1918, when it lasted 24 days and caused major glacier river floods. But the office considers it one of the country’s most active volcanoes. Katla has erupted 21 times in the last 1,100 years, and 18 broke through the ice cap in the volcano’s central crater, according to the Catalog of Icelandic Volcanoes. Icelandic scientists are watching the volcano, according to Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Headline: UN, EU help Palestinians build ICC suit against Israel
The United Nations and the European Union have actively helped the Palestinian Authority build its global advocacy campaign against the Jewish state; including it’s filing of “war crimes” complaints” about Israel before the International Criminal Court. Over the last year the UN and the EU were participants in the creation of a $2.1 million empowerment plan for Palestinian women. However, according to the details of the plan, which was unveiled Wednesday in Ramallah, $1.3 million of that sum would be spent on internationalized activities to fight Israel’s “occupation” of the West Bank. The plan was designed with the help of a 481,773 Euro grant from the EU so that Palestinians could comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

Headline: Saudi power station hit by rockets fired from Yemen
Rocket fire from Yemen struck a power station in southern Saudi Arabia on Friday, emergency workers said, a day after US Secretary of State John Kerry announced a new peace initiative. The strike on the transformer in Najran which lies just across the Yemen border, marked a rare hit on Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure despite months of periodic bombardment of the area. Attacks have intensified since the suspension in early August of United Nations-brokered peace talks between the Houthi rebels and their allies, and Yemen’s internationally-recognised government. In the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah on Thursday, Kerry outlined a plan which offers the Houthis participation in government in exchange for an end to violence and a surrender of weapons. The rebels, allied with forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, have so far not commented on the plan which Kerry described after meeting with his Gulf counterparts, a British minister and the UN peace envoy to Yemen. He said Washington was “deeply troubled” by rebel attacks on Saudi territory, where more than 100 soldiers and civilians have been killed in cross-border bombardments and skirmishes.

Egyptian security officials on Thursday said a police driver kidnapped this week has been publicly shot dead in Sinai by suspected jihadists from the local Islamic State (ISIS) affiliate. The officials, quoted by The Associated Press, said three terrorists and the policeman arrived Thursday at el-Arish’s residential al-Masaeed district in a green pickup truck. The policeman, blindfolded with his arms and legs tied by a robe, was then brought out and shot twice in the head. He had been kidnapped by the jihadists Tuesday while driving a police car in el-Arish. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Syria Headline: Rebels, civilians allowed to evacuate from Daraya
Thousands of rebel fighters and civilians are to evacuate the besieged town of Daraya near the Syrian capital under an accord struck on Thursday, state news agency SANA said. “Seven hundred armed men with their personal weapons will leave Daraya to head to the (rebel-controlled) city of Idlib, while thousands of men and women with their families will be taken to reception centres,” it said. The rebels would have to surrender other armaments to the army. A military source told AFP that the army would enter Daraya, which has been under a regime siege for the past four years, after the evacuation from the rebel-held town. A rebel official in the town said the evacuation would begin on Friday, while a Syrian source on the ground said it would last four days. “The civilians will go to regions under regime control around Damascus, rebels will go to Idlib “or sort out their situation with the regime”, the rebel official said.

Syria Headline: Barrel bombing kills 11 children in Syria’s Aleppo
Eleven children were killed on Thursday in a barrel bomb attack carried out by government forces on a rebel-held neighborhood of Syria’s Aleppo city, a monitor said. “Fifteen civilians, among them 11 children, were killed in a barrel bomb attack on the Bab al-Nayrab neighborhood” in the south of Aleppo city, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said. The group also reported eight civilians, including two children, were killed on Thursday in rebel fire on the government-held west of the city. An AFP journalist in Bab al-Nayrab saw rescue workers and civilians digging through the rubble of collapsed buildings. Fighting for Aleppo city has intensified since regime troops seized control of the last supply route into rebel-held areas in mid-July. After a nearly three-week siege, rebels early this month linked up with opposition-held neighborhoods via a new road from the city’s south, in a major blow to fighters loyal to Assad. But fighting has continued near the new supply line, which has been bombarded almost daily in recent days, affecting supplies coming into the city’s opposition-controlled neighborhoods. An AFP correspondent in the city’s rebel-held east said on Thursday that vegetables and meat were becoming more scarce than in days after the siege was broken. A litre of fuel had risen from 700 Syria pounds ($3.25, 2.90 euros) earlier this month to 1,200 Syrian pounds, he said.

Syria Headline: ISIS pulls out of Jarablus; Kurdish militias accuse US of abandoning them
Syria Headline: Syrian Kurds clash with Turkish forces
DEBKAfile military and intelligence sources: More than a day after Turkey launched its invasion of northern Syria aimed at capturing the city of Jarablus from ISIS, it appears that the terrorist organization has left the city without a fight. On Thursday, pro-Turkish Syrian militias, in cooperation with the Turkish military, took control of most of Jarablus as well as the main roads to and from the city from the east, west and south. Syria’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement the previous day condemning the invasion and calling it a violation of the country’s sovereignty, but DEBKAfile‘s intelligence sources report that Turkey’s move was coordinated in advance with Syrian President Bashar Assad. Meanwhile, US Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday during a joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim in Ankara that Syrian Kurdish forces will lose US support if they don’t retreat to the east bank of the Euphrates River. DEBKAfile‘s intelligence sources report Biden’s statement shows that the US has accepted all of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s terms regarding the Kurds and exposed them to a Turkish military attack if they fail to withdraw. The Kurdish militias operating in northern Syria accuse Washington of abandoning them by cooperating with Turkey’s plan that they say is aimed at blocking Kurdish territorial continuity rather than fighting ISIS. The Kurds have announced that they will fight the Turkish invasion. ***see also Turkey below August 26, 2016
Syria Headline: Turkey-backed rebels aim for another key ISIS-held town
An official in a rebel faction participating in the Turkish-supported cross-border incursion into Syria has revealed that the operation aims to seize Al-Bab, an ISIS-stronghold near both Syrian regime and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) frontlines. Mohammad Abu Ibrahim—a military commander in the Levant Front—told a pro-opposition outlet that the next step of the Euphrates Operation following the capture of Jarablus and surrounding villages, which was achieved Wednesday evening, will be the “commencement of the battle to liberate the strategic town of Al-Bab,” which lies 60 kilometers southwest of Jarablus. In mid-January, Syrian regime forces reached within 10 kilometers of the ISIS-held town, however the offensive grounded to a halt following a counterattack by the jihadist group. The SDF, for its part, advanced on Al-Bab, the largest remaining population center controlled by ISIS in the northeastern Aleppo countryside, during its offensive on Manbij earlier in August. Meanwhile, another opposition figure( Mustafa Sejari, the head of the Mutassim Brigade’s political office) said the Euphrates Shield operation would aim to break ISIS lines around the northern Aleppo town of Marea. “We will not stop until we connect Jarablus to Marea,” he vowed.

Headline: Cizre bomb kills 11 policemen
A car bomb in Cizre, south-east Turkey, has killed 11 policemen and injured 78. The explosion targeted a checkpoint and left the nearby police HQ in ruins. The banned Kurdistan Workers Party, PKK, said it was behind the attack. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim vowed to give the “vile attackers the answer they deserve”. On Friday, the Kurdish militants denied deliberately targeting Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the secularist Republican People’s Party (CHP), near the north-eastern city of Artvin, on Thursday. Mr Kilicdaroglu escaped unharmed. Turkish military operations in the south-east and retaliatory attacks by the PKK have left hundreds of people dead. Turkey’s PKK conflict shows no sign of abating, says the BBC’s Mark Lowen, and the government has ruled out any negotiations until the group completely disarms.

Headline: Turkey vows long fight in Syria against terrorists
Turkey sent more tanks into Syria on Thursday and sternly warned a Kurdish militia to withdraw from frontline positions, a day after pro-Ankara Syrian opposition fighters captured a key border town from extremists. The tanks joined those which crossed the frontier on Wednesday in the so-called Operation Euphrates Shield, which Turkey says aims to rid the northern Syrian border area of both Daesh extremists and Kurdish militia. Hundreds of Syrian rebel fighters — backed by Turkish tanks, warplanes and special forces — had on Wednesday taken the town of Jarabulus to end over three years of extremists’ control. But Defense Minister Fikri Isik warned the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia to move back east across the Euphrates or also face intervention from Turkey.

Headline: U.S. Navy ship fires warning shots at Iranian vessel
A U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots toward an Iranian fast-attack craft that approached two U.S. ships, a Pentagon spokesman said on Thursday, in the most serious of a number of incidents in the Gulf area this week. “They did feel compelled ultimately to fire three warning shots and the reason for that is… they had taken steps already to try and de-escalate this situation,” spokesman Peter Cook told reporters. Tensions have increased in the Gulf in recent days despite an improvement in relations between Iran and the United States. Years of mutual animosity eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran in January after a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions but serious differences still remain over Iran’s ballistic missile program, Syria and Iraq. A U.S. defense official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the USS Squall patrol craft fired three warning shots from a .50 caliber gun in the northern Gulf on Wednesday after warning flares did not work. The incident started with three Iranian vessels, but there was only one around by the time the warning shots were fired, the official said. He described the Iranian behavior as “unsafe, unprofessional, and not routine.” At one point, the Iranian vessel came within 200 yards (193 meters) of a U.S. ship, the official said. Another interaction took place between an Iranian and U.S. ship on Wednesday, the defense official said but gave few more details.

Headline: Death toll from attack on American university in Kabul reaches 12
Warring sides in Afghanistan have made conflicting claims about an overnight airstrike in the troubled southern Helmand province in which at least 24 people died. Provincial Governor Hayatullah Hayat told VOA Friday that Afghan army warplanes struck a Taliban base in the Nad Ali district, destroying the facility and killing “24 enemies,” including their regional commander, and wounding four others. But the Taliban has alleged the attack in Nad Ali was carried out by an American aircraft and it targeted a prison facility. “The attack killed 22 [personnel] of Afghan army and police captured during recent fighting and were being held at the prison,” a statement quoted a Taliban spokesman as claiming. He added that three other captive Afghan forces were wounded and confirmed the killing of three Taliban fighters who were guarding the facility. Area residents have also supported the Taliban accounts, saying both prisoners and Taliban insurgents were among those killed. But the provincial governor rejected those claims while speaking to VOA, saying the facility was an active Taliban base and held no prisoners.

Headline: Islamic Militants Attack Somali Beach Restaurant in Mogadishu
Al-Shabab Islamic militants are claiming responsibility for a terrorist attack on a beach restaurant Tuesday in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. Police say a car bomb blew up outside the eatery on Banadir beach before the gunmen ran inside and opened fire. Somali security forces exchanged gunfire with the militants. One police officer says the militants were “gunned down,” but it is unclear if that means they are dead or if anyone else was killed or wounded. Al-Shabab attacked a neighboring hotel in January, killing more than 20 people. VOA correspondent Harun Maruf reports a separate blast Thursday at a market in the southern Somali town of Bardhere that wounded 12 people, including security officials and the district commissioner. The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab is waging a campaign of terrorism to try to overthrow the Somali government. Police, security officials and tourist spots are their most frequent targets.

Headline: In Harare, police fire tear gas to disperse opposition protesters
Police in the Zimbabwean capital Harare fired tear gas and used water cannon Friday to disperse opposition demonstrators who had gathered to demand free and fair elections scheduled to be held in 2018. The so-called mega demonstration had been organized by 18 opposition political parties, including the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Morgan Tsvangirai and the Zimbabwe People First, which was formed by former Vice President Joice Mujuru. Judge Hlekani Mwayera of the High Court of Zimbabwe had authorized the march, which called for electoral reforms. The 92-year-old president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has said he will stand again in the upcoming election. Police blocked off the site of the protest. They also beat up people wearing red T-shirts, which is the color of the MDC party. The protesters threw stones at police while others set tires ablaze. Demonstrators also removed the sign for a street named after President Mugabe.

Headline: Cincinnati sees estimated 78 heroin overdoses in 2 days
Headline: Number of K2 patients in Austin rises Friday
Cincinnati police are asking for the public’s help in trying to identify the source of the suspected heroin behind an estimated 78 overdoses in just two days. Meanwhile, Hamilton County officials say they will seek funding for treatment and expanded response teams. County officials are calling the latest onslaught of overdose cases a public health emergency, and county Health Commissioner Tim Ingram says the number of emergency-room incidents over the last six days was “unprecedented.” Emergency rooms estimate they had 174 suspected opioid overdose cases this week, including three deaths. Last year, accidental drug overdoses killed 3,050 people in Ohio, an average of eight per day, state officials say. Cincinnati City Manager Harry Black said authorities suspect carfentanil, a drug used to sedate elephants and other large animals, may be mixed in with heroin and causing the overdoses. The drug is 100 times more potent than fentanyl, which is suspected in spates of overdoses in several states. Last month, carfentanil was discovered in the Cincinnati area’s heroin stream, but many hospitals don’t have the equipment to test blood for the previously uncommon animal opioid. Meanwhile, Austin police said there were at least 45 K2-related calls involving 52 patients in 24 hours Thursday. EMS, along with the Austin Fire Department and the Austin Police Department, were working the scene throughout the early afternoon hours Thursday as they tried to get control of the situation.

Headline: Rare twister wreaks havoc in Russia (VIDEO)
A rare tornado has ripped through the suburbs of Syktyvkar, a provincial capital in northwest Russia, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. The twister tore off the roofs of several buildings and fences, felled several trees and power line posts, turned over a van and also damaged a crane at a local lumber mill. No casualties were reported in the aftermath of Wednesday’s tornado, but the twister caused significant damage to the lumber mill and caused a traffic jam by damaging street lights. The disaster hit the republic of Komi, located northwest of the Ural mountains – where such phenomena are a rare sight.

Headline: Mass protests in West Bank city after Palestinian detainee dies
Nablus, the second largest city in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, was gripped by violent protests on Tuesday after the death of a Palestinian detainee shortly after he was seized by Palestinian security forces. Hundreds of protesters, some throwing stones, marched through the city to denounce the death of Ahmed Halawa, who was seized during a police raid that followed the death of two police officers last week. “Security forces detained Ahmed Izz Halawa during a complicated and delicate security operation in Nablus,” Adnan Al Dmairi, the spokesman for the Palestinian Authority’s security services, said in a statement. Halawa was killed after he was taken to Juneid prison in Nablus, he said, although the exact circumstances of his death were not clear. Akram Al-Rjoub, the governor of Nablus, said Halawa was beaten to death by members of the security forces. Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Al-Hamdallah promised a full investigation, describing the incident as “rare”. Halawa was a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, a militant group linked to the Fatah party.

Headline: Turkey Uses Bilateral Ties with Israel as Alibi
Israel and Turkey this week will begin the process of exchanging ambassadors as the former allies continued the formal renewal of diplomatic relations after a six-year rift, Turkey’s foreign minister said Tuesday. Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters at a press conference the exchange will take place “in the coming days,” according to a report in Turkish news outlet Haber10. The ambassadors from both countries have yet to be announced. Turkey’s announcement came a day after Jerusalem and Ankara traded fierce recriminations over Israel’s bombardment of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Sunday.

Headline: Leave Gaza now, State Department warns U.S. citizens
The State Department advised U.S. citizens to avoid Gaza and limit travel in the West Bank after a Palestinian rocket attack led to Israeli bombings in Gaza. In a travel warning issued Tuesday it urged citizens in Gaza “to depart as soon as possible when border crossings are open,” noting that although a cease-fire between Gaza and Israel is in place, “sporadic mortar or rocket fire and corresponding Israeli military response continue to occur.” It added that Gaza, adjacent to Israel’s western border, is “under the control of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization.” It recommended citizens “avoid all travel to the Gaza Strip, and if you are there, leave as soon as you are able.” Israeli military forces carried out up to 50 airstrikes Sunday in Gaza in response to a rocket attack earlier in the day, which struck the Israeli border town of Sderot, Ahram Online News said Wednesday, citing the Times of Israel.

Headline: Palestinian Foreign Ministry urges U.S. to ban citizens from trespassing Al-Aqsa Mosque
Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday urged the U.S. State Department to ban its citizens from taking part in daily “incursions” into Al-Aqsa mosque in east Jerusalem. The ministry condemned in an emailed press statement the participation of a congressman from the U.S. State of Utah Mike Lee in the “incursion of settlers into Al-Aqsa Mosque on Tuesday.” Scores of settlers stormed into Al-Aqsa mosque compound through the Dung Gate Tuesday under heavy military protection by Israeli police and took provocative tours in the yards of the holy mosque, according to Palestinian sources. The statement considered the incursion as “illegal and a flagrant intervention in Palestinian affairs,” and as backing the provocative moves by extremist Jewish groups aiming to change the status quo at the mosque.

Headline: Kerry in Saudi Arabia for Meetings on Yemen War Impasse
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday for meetings with the kingdom’s senior royals and other Gulf officials for talks focusing on Yemen’s stalled peace process. Kerry is expected to raise U.S. concerns about civilian casualties in Yemen “and our strong desire to ensure that those sorts of casualties are avoided, and that the conduct of the air campaign is done with all proper and appropriate regard for being discriminate and precise,” said a senior State Department official traveling with Kerry. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the meetings and so spoke on condition of anonymity. The United States has backed a Saudi-led coalition of nine Arab countries in a nearly 18-month bombing campaign against Shiite Houthi rebels and their allies in Yemen. The Houthis, who are allied with Saudi Arabia’s regional rival, Iran, seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014. The U.S. has provided logistical and intelligence support to the coalition. The conflict has killed more than 9,000 people, including more than 3,700 civilians and displaced 2.4 million. The fighting has destroyed much of the already limited infrastructure in one of the Arab world’s poorest countries.

Syrian rebels, backed by the Turkish military and US air cover, say they have taken the town of Jarablus from jihadists of so-called Islamic State. The assault began at dawn when Turkish warplanes, tanks and special forces personnel crossed the nearby border. Rebel commanders said most of the IS militants subsequently retreated. Turkey says its intervention is targeting both IS fighters and a Syrian Kurdish-led alliance that is attempting to advance on Jarablus. US Vice-President Joe Biden later confirmed the US had been flying air cover for the operation. He also warned members of the Syrian Democratic Forces – the most effective opponents of IS on the ground in Syria – that they had to return to the east of the River Euphrates if they wanted to continue receiving its help. “We have made it absolutely clear… that they must go back across the river,” he said. “They cannot, will not, and under no circumstances get American support if they do not keep that commitment.” ***see also Turkey below; ‘coincidentally’ August 24, 1516 is the day when the Ottomans sparked their takeover of the Middle East at the Battle of Dābiq defeating the Mamluk Sultanate near the town of Dabiq in Syria.
Iraq Headline: Iraq forces launch push to retake town
Iraqi special forces led an operation on Tuesday aimed at retaking the town of Qayyarah, a key staging base for operations to attack Mosul, military sources said. Qayyarah lies on the western bank of the Tigris river, about 60 km south of Mosul, the Daesh group’s last major urban stronghold in Iraq. With the clock ticking down on what Iraq expects to be its biggest anti-IS operation yet, the UN warned of population displacement on a scale not seen in years. “The operation started at dawn with the participation of Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) and army forces,” Brig. Gen. Firas Bashar said. US-led coalition aircraft provided support, said Bashar, the spokesman for the operations command in Nineveh, the province in which Qayyarah and Mosul are located. “The operation is ongoing and currently achieving its goals,” CTS spokesman Sabah Al-Noman said. “Qayyarah will be cleared and the operation wrapped up quickly, bolstering our plans… for the final battle to liberate Mosul,” he told AFP.

Turkey will not accept the creation of a new Kurdish entity inside Syria and the territorial integrity of the country must be maintained, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Wednesday. Headline: Iranian General: Iran Formed Shi’ite Army to Destroy Israel by 2039
A retired Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) general, who is currently one of the Iranian commanders leading Shi’ite troops in Syria, said in an interview last week that Iran has formed a Shi’ite army that seeks to destroy Israel by 2039. Brig. Gen. Mohammad Ali Falaki, who is serving with the Afghan Fatemiyoun Division, said that the Afghan militia’s establishment facilitated “the formation of a Shia liberation army” that is commanded by Qassam Soleimani, the head of the IRGC’s elite Qods Force. The main goal of this army is eliminating Israel, according to Falaki. “Forming the first nucleus of the liberation army has the objective that, God willing, we will not have anything called Israel in 23 years,” he said. He boasted that Iranian-led troops are already stationed by Israel’s border. Falaki’s comments are the latest in a long series of Iranian threats issued against Israel, which haven’t tapered off since the Islamic Republic reached a nuclear agreement with world powers in July of last year.

Headline: US takes casualties in Helmand fighting
A powerful explosion was heard near the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul on Wednesday evening, followed by sounds of heavy gunfire, sending panicked students at evening classes scrambling for safety on the highly guarded campus in the Afghan capital. At least five students were injured and were taken to a local emergency hospital, authorities said. It was not known whether any others were wounded, and there were no immediate reports of fatalities. The double assault came less than two weeks after two foreign professors at the elite American-run university were kidnapped from their vehicle outside the campus. The victims, one American and one Australian, have not been heard from since, and there has been no news about demands for ransom or other contact with the abductors. Police and government officials said security forces and emergency vehicles had been sent to the campus, located in an isolated section of the capital near the parliament. They said they were preparing to send in a special operations force to search for any attackers on campus. Meanwhile, A U.S. service member has died from wounds sustained today in an operation near Lashkar Gah in Helmand province in Afghanistan, the Pentagon confirmed. The service member was conducting “train, advise, assist” activities with Afghan counterparts when the patrol “triggered an improvised explosive device,” or IED, according to a news release from U.S. Forces Afghanistan.

Headline: US deploys attack helicopters to strike Daesh in Libya
The United States has begun using attack helicopters to target the Daesh terror group in the extremists’ Libyan former stronghold of Sirte, a defence official said Tuesday. American jets have since the start of August been helping fighters loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) retake the coastal city of Sirte, conducting dozens of strikes on Daesh fighting positions and equipment. Lieutenant Commander Anthony Falvo, a spokesman for the US military’s Africa Command, said Marine Corps AH-1W SuperCobra attack helicopters had in recent days joined the operation. “The Cobras provide additional precision air strike capability,” Stuttgart-based Falvo told AFP in a phone interview. “It gives us a little bit more flexibility.” SuperCobra gunships are based on the USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship in the Mediterranean. Harrier jets are also being launched from the ship to conduct strikes on Sirte. As of Monday, the United States had conducted 77 air strikes in the city.

Headline: Mozambique Opposition Attacks Health Facilities
At least 100,000 rural Mozambicans are paying the price for the nation’s stalled peace talks, after armed opposition fighters allegedly attacked and looted at least two health facilities in the past month, depriving patients of basic medical care and supplies. Human Rights Watch said Wednesday armed men linked to Mozambique’s main opposition party, Renamo, have stormed emergency rooms, threatened patients and staff and seized basic hospital supplies in the towns of Morrumbala and Mopeia in central Mozambique. The attackers’ take reportedly included bed sheets, mosquito nets, HIV tests, antibiotics, syringes, vaccines and essential supplies used to deliver babies. Renamo did not confirm or deny responsibility for these attacks, but the party’s leader recently ordered attacks across the country amid stalled peace talks with the ruling Frelimo party. The rights watchdog says it also received reports of other hospital and clinic attacks, but could not confirm those incidents.

The first bomb exploded in the hotel’s car park, but caused no casualties, said police Lt. Sirisak Wungkulum. He said the second bomb planted in an Isuzu car went off 20 minutes later in front of the hotel, killing a 25-year-old woman who worked in the restaurant. Hospital officials said 29 people were wounded. It was the fourth car bombing this year in Thailand’s south, the only Muslim area in the Buddhist majority country.

Headline:North Korea submarine fires ballistic missile
North Korea has fired a ballistic missile from a submarine off its east coast, say the US and South Korea. The KN-11 missile was launched from waters near Sinpo and flew about 500km (300 miles) before falling into the Sea of Japan, a US official said. Japan’s PM said it fell inside Japan’s Air Defence Identification Zone, calling it a “reckless act”. It comes as South Korea and the US begin annual military drills, which routinely anger Pyongyang. North Korea, which sees these drills as a rehearsal for invasion, recently warned they were pushing the Korean peninsula towards the brink of war and threatened a “pre-emptive nuclear strike” in retaliation. North Korea is banned by the UN from any use of ballistic or nuclear technology. But in recent months it has carried out repeated missile launches, and is believed to be close to conducting its fifth test of a nuclear device. Wednesday’s early morning launch appears to have been its most successful test yet of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

Headline: Fed Admits Another $4 Trillion In QE Will Be Needed To Offset An “Economic Shock”
In a Fed Staff working paper released over the weekend titled “Gauging the Ability of the FOMC to Respond to Future Recessions” and penned by deputy director of the division of research and statistics at the Fed, the author concludes that “simulations of the FRB/US model of a severe recession suggest that large-scale asset purchases and forward guidance about the future path of the federal funds rate should be able to provide enough additional accommodation to fully compensate for a more limited [ability] to cut short-term interest rates in most, but probably not all, circumstances.” So far so good, however, there are some notable problems with the paper’s assumptions, as Citi head of G10 FX, Steven Englander, observes. He writes that the paper’s basic framework is to take the standard US economic model used by the Fed, give it a negative shock big enough to push the unemployment rate up by 5 percentage points (big but not unprecedented over the last 50 years) and deploying the Fed’s policy rate, QE and forward guidance tools to see if they are adequate to get the economy back on track. Negative rates and helicopter money are not used.

Headline: W. Va. city swamped by overdoses, as nation battles surging opioid epidemic
The heroin epidemic that has plagued the nation’s urban and rural communities alike had not spared West Virginia, but nothing prepared Cabell County officials for 26 overdoses in a four-hour span last week. The wave of misery was focused in a Huntington public housing complex, where victims injected from a batch of the drug believed to have been laced with Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid up to 100 times more potent than morphine. Investigators believe two fatalities that occurred during the same time period could be related. “We have never seen anything like this before to this magnitude,” said Gordon Merry, Emergency Management Service director for Cabell County. It was the latest cluster of overdoses to take place in communities ranging from gritty cities to rural farmlands. Overdoses involving heroin and synthetic drugs like “spice” left two dozen hospitalized earlier this month in Ohio; killed two and sickened 16 two months ago in New Haven, Conn.; and hospitalized 33 last month in Brooklyn. Just last week, nine people overdosed on heroin from a single bad batch, with one woman dying. And twice in the last week, paramedics have rushed to Los Angeles’ Skid Row to treat multiple people sicked by synthetic marijuana. Incidents of large-scale overdoses bring headlines, but public health and law enforcement officials say the opioid crisis gripping the nation claims most of its victims quietly, one or two at a time. In Cabell County, there have been at least 440 overdoses this year, including 26 fatalities.

Headline: Italy earthquake has killed at least 120 people – prime minister
The earthquake that struck central Italy on Wednesday has killed at least 120 people, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said. A powerful earthquake flattened mountain towns in central Italy on Wednesday, killing at least 73 people, burying some alive in their sleep under mounds of rubble, as exhausted volunteers and firefighters raced to free those still trapped. The quake struck in the early hours of the morning when most residents were asleep, razing homes and buckling roads in a cluster of communities some 140 km (85 miles) east of Rome. It was powerful enough to be felt in Bologna to the north and Naples to the south, each more than 220 km from the epicenter. The army was mobilized to help with special heavy equipment and the treasury released 235 million euros ($265 million) of emergency funds. At the Vatican, Pope Francis dispatched part of the Holy See’s tiny firefighting force to help in the rescue. Rescue workers used helicopters to pluck trapped survivors to safety in more isolated villages cut off by landslides and rubble. Aerial photographs showed whole areas of Amatrice (photo above), last year voted one of Italy’s most beautiful historic towns, flattened by the 6.2 magnitude quake. Many of those killed or missing were visitors.

Headline: At least 3 reported dead after powerful earthquake strikes central Burma
A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 rocked central Burma on Wednesday, damaging nearly 100 ancient Buddhist pagodas in the tourist city of Bagan and reportedly killing at least three people. The quake was centered about 15 miles west of Chauk, an area west of the ancient capital of Bagan, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The epicenter was located fairly far below the Earth’s surface at a depth of about 52 miles, it said. Deep earthquakes generally cause less surface damage. At least 94 brick pagodas in Bagan were damaged, the Ministry of Religious and Cultural Affairs said in a statement. Bagan, also known as Pagan, has more than 2,200 structures including pagodas and temples constructed from the 10th to the 14th centuries. Many are in disrepair while others have been restored in recent years, aided by the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO.

Then, Monday evening the IDF attacked a Syrian missile launch site connected with the Assad regime after a mortar fell on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights. The IDF said it views the Syrian regime as responsible for any attacks emanating from its territory and said it would not tolerate any violations of Israeli sovereignty or danger to Israeli citizens, even as it appeared that the shelling was a misfire from internal battles within Syria in its ongoing civil war.

Nahshon added that “the normalization of our relations with Turkey does not mean that we will remain silent in the face of its baseless condemnations. Israel will continue to defend its civilians from all rocket fire on our territory, in accordance with international law and our conscience. Headline: Yemen ready to open bases to Russia to fight terrorism: Ex-President Saleh
Deadly clashes raged Monday between Yemeni government forces battling to secure an entrance to the besieged city of Taiz and Shiite Huthi rebels surrounding it, military sources said. Backed by a Saudi-led Arab coalition, Yemeni troops launched an offensive last week to break the rebel siege on Yemen’s flash-point third city, in the country’s southwest. The heaviest fighting Monday was near its western entrance where airstrikes by the Arab coalition and ground battles left 11 dead among Huthi rebels and their allies, loyalist military sources said. An air raid killed two more rebels at the northern entrance to Taiz, which has been encircled for more than year, the sources said. AFP could not confirm the toll from independent sources and the Iran-backed rebels rarely acknowledge their losses. “The blockade of Taiz is almost broken after the retaking of Jabal al-Dhabab mountain” by loyalist forces, Colonel Abdulaziz al-Majidi, a spokesman of pro-government forces in the area, told AFP. “The road is now open between the west of Taiz and southern provinces,” he said, adding however that he was referring to a “rugged” route and not the main road. ***see also Iran & Turkey below regarding air bases

Syria Headline: Syrian Rebels Prepare Attack from Turkey on Islamic State Town
Syria Headline: Kurdish-backed Jarabulus council warns Turkey of supporting ISIS north Syria
Hundreds of Syrian rebels are preparing to launch an operation to capture a town held by Islamic State at the border with Turkey, a senior Syrian rebel said on Sunday, a move that would frustrate Kurdish hopes to expand further in that area. The rebels, Turkey-backed groups fighting under the banner of the Free Syrian Army, are expected to assault Jarablus from inside Turkey in the next few days, said the rebel official, who is familiar with the plans but declined to be identified. “The factions are gathering in an area near the border (inside Turkey),” the rebel said. Turkey, an important supporter of the FSA groups, is worried that Kurds are using the SDF’s westwards expansion against IS to extend their influence across northern Syria. The SDF already holds the eastern bank of the Euphrates opposite Jarablus. On Saturday Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that Ankara would play a more active role in addressing the conflict in Syria in the coming six months to stop it being torn along ethnic lines.

Iraq Headline: ISIS roadside bomb kills civilians fleeing Iraq town
Six Iraqi civilians were killed on Monday when a bomb planted by the ISIS group went off as they tried to flee the Hawijah area, security officials said. Thousands of people have been fleeing ISIS rule in Hawijah, which lies about 220 kilometres (140 miles) north of Baghdad, in recent weeks. “Six civilians were killed and five wounded by an IED (improvised explosive device),” a colonel in the Kurdish peshmerga forces told AFP. “It happened during an attempt by families to flee areas southeast of Kirkuk and reach peshmerga positions,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Among them were women and children,” he added. Other local officials confirmed the information. Much of the area is littered by bombs and booby traps rigged by ISIS to prevent movements by Iraqi security forces.

Kurdish Headline: Kurds launch Hasaka assault to evict Syrian army
The Kurdish YPG militia launched a major assault on Monday to seize the last government-controlled parts of the northeastern Syrian city of Hasaka after calling on pro-government militias to surrender, Kurdish forces and residents said. They said Kurdish forces began the offensive after midnight to take the southeastern district of Nashwa, close to where a security compound is located near the governor’s office close to the heart of the city. The powerful YPG militia had earlier captured Ghwairan, the only major Arab neighborhood still in government hands. The fighting this week in Hasaka, which is divided into zones of Kurdish and Syrian government control, marks the most violent confrontation between the Kurdish YPG militia and Damascus in more than five years of civil war.

Headline: ‘IS child bomber’ kills at least 51 at Turkey wedding
A suicide bomber as young as 12 killed at least 51 people at a wedding in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday, pointing the finger at the Islamic State group. Erdogan said Saturday’s blast in Gaziantep near the Syria border “was the result of a suicide bomber aged between 12 and 14 who either detonated (the bomb) or others detonated it.” The explosion was the latest attack to rock the key NATO member in a horrific year that has seen strikes blamed on Kurdish and Islamist militants as well as a bloody July 15 botched coup. The president said the Islamic State group was the “likely perpetrator” of the bomb attack, the deadliest in 2016, that targeted a celebration attended by many Kurds. The remains of a suicide vest were found at the scene, the chief prosecutor’s office said according to broadcaster CNN-Turk. Gulser Ates, one of scores wounded in the attack, told Hurriyet the attack took place as the party was breaking up in the mainly Kurdish neighbourhood.

Headline: Russia presses for access to strategic Incirlik air base in Turkey
Russia has approached Turkey to request use of the U.S.-built Incirlik air base. The NATO base, which is home to at least 50 U.S. B-61 nuclear warheads, is 65 miles from the Syrian border and would enable the Russian air force to engage in “constant bombing” of Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) and other anti-Assad forces, a Russian official said, according to a report by the UK’s Times newspaper. “It just remains to come to an agreement with (President Recep Tayyip) Erdogan that we get the NATO base Incirlik as [our] primary air base,” Sen. Igor Morozov, a member of the Russian upper house’s committee on international affairs, said. “You’ll see, the next base will be Incirlik,” he told Izvestia after the Kremlin revealed last week that its bombers had started flying out of Iran to launch attacks on Syria. “This will be one more victory for Putin.” Analysts say Turkey “has drifted towards Russia” in the wake of the failed coup on July 15. Erdogan has even suggested that the United States played a hand in the failed attempt to overthrow his government and is demanding the U.S. extradite cleric Fethullah Gulen, who has been alleged to have been the mastermind of the coup. ***see also Iran below

Headline: Irate Iran ends Russian use of bases ‘for now’
Headline: Ayatollah shoots down Putin’s high-flying Tupolev
Iran said Monday that Russian raids on Syria from one of its airbases had ended for now, shortly after accusing Moscow of “showing off” when it revealed the bombing missions. “It was a specific, authorized mission and it’s over for now. They conducted it and they are gone now,” foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi told reporters in Tehran. He left open the possibility of future Russian combat flights from Iran, saying it would depend on “the situation in the region, and according to our permission.” That came a few hours after Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan made a rare public criticism of Russia for revealing that its warplanes were using Iran’s Hamedan airbase to attack insurgents in Syria. “Naturally, the Russians are keen to show that they are a superpower and an influential country and that they are active in security issues in the region and the world,” Dehghan told Iran’s Channel 2 television.

Headline: Lack of Coordination Resulted in Khanabad’s Fall: Soldiers (Khanabad falls to Taliban)
The lack of coordination between security forces is the main reason why Khanabad district fell to the Taliban, said soldiers fighting insurgents on the Kunduz frontline. According to them, they have been fighting Taliban for days – with no coordination among themselves. The Taliban took control of Khanabad early Saturday morning, however by Saturday evening security forces had retaken the district. TOLOnews’ Nematullah Ahmadi, the first journalist to access Khanabad after it was retaken by security forces has reported that soldiers had fought insurgents for days without any food. These soldiers have blasted government for not providing them with enough ammunition and food and have said the lack of coordination among the different security branches resulted in the fall of the district, and other parts of the province, to the Taliban. Security forces retook control of Khanabad district on Saturday – after nine hours of heavy fighting. According to security forces, insurgents have burned down army bases and government buildings in the district. Atiqullah, a soldier, said: “It has been three days of fighting for us – on empty stomachs. We do not have food and our supply route has been cut off by the Taliban.” Taliban have in the past few days closed off the Kabul-Badakhshan highway and have created their own check points, where they search passengers traveling to Mazar or Badakhshan, said soldiers. Despite having retaken control of Khanabad, the Afghan National Army is still embroiled in heavy clashes against the Taliban in Khanabad, Ali Abad and Qala-e-Zal districts.

Headline: Libya parliament votes no confidence in UN-backed govt
The Islamic State is losing further control of the Libyan city of Sirte as pro-government, U.S.-backed militias said they captured the town’s main mosque and a prison. The Al-Bunyan Al-Marsoos militia group on Sunday said its forces advanced into two residential areas that held some of the last key hideouts of the Islamic State in Sirte. The militias’ offensive against the Islamic State in Sirte began in June, backed by U.S. airstrikes since Aug. 1 after weeks of stalemates. Positions captured on Sunday after morning airstrikes include the al-Ribatt mosque, the Sahara Bank and the former Internal Security Agency, which was used as a morality prison by the Islamic State, also identified as Daesh, ISIS and ISIL.

Headline: Sunni extremists infiltrating US with help from South American smugglers, officials warn
Sunni extremists are infiltrating the United States with the help of alien smugglers in South America and are crossing U.S. borders with ease, according to a U.S. South Command intelligence report. The Command’s J-2 intelligence directorate reported recently in internal channels that “special interest aliens” are working with a known alien smuggling network in Latin America to reach the United States. The smuggling network was not identified. Army Col. Lisa A. Garcia, a Southcom spokeswoman, did not address the intelligence report directly but said Sunni terrorist infiltration is a security concern. “Networks that specialize in smuggling individuals from regions of terrorist concern, mainly from the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, the Middle East, and East Africa, are indeed a concern for Southcom and other interagency security partners who support our country’s national security,” Garcia told the Washington Free Beacon. “There are major hubs that serve as entry points into the region for migrants from those areas of concern attempting to enter the U.S. along our border with Mexico,” she said.

Luke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword. Luke 21:9: wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions) Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)

Headline: Death Toll Up to 27 in Central Somalia Bombings
More than 20 people were killed on Sunday when suicide bombers from the militant al Shabaab group detonated two car bombs at a local government headquarters in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region, witnesses and officials said. Residents of the town of Galkayo in north central Somalia said they heard two loud blasts in quick succession followed by heavy gunfire. “There were two huge bombs. The first one was a truck bomb, followed a minute or so (later) by another car bomb. My brother was injured at the scene,” Halima Ismail, a local resident, told Reuters. Islamist al Shabaab, which has carried out a series of deadly attacks in the Horn of Africa country as it seeks to topple the Western-backed government, claimed responsibility for the bombings. “There were two suicide car bombs,” Abdiasis Abu Musab, the group’s spokesman for military operations, told Reuters. Police initially put the death toll at 10, including civilians and security forces personnel, but a medical official said that number had doubled.

Headline: Boko Haram burns down village of Shawa, Nigeria
Members of the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram destroyed the Nigerian village of Shawa, injuring residents and burning buildings, witnesses said. An eyewitness and member of a youth vigilance group told the Nigerian newspaper The Punch that at least 20 heavily armed Boko Haram members arrived in Shawa on bicycles early Sunday morning, while residents were asleep, and shot at homes. The villagers fled into a nearby forest and watched as the invaders set fire to all the village’s structures before leaving. The village is near Chibok, where 267 girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram from a school in 2014. There were no deaths reported in Sunday’s attack, but many were reported injured, some critically, and the village remains deserted.

Headline: North Korea threatens ‘pre-emptive nuclear strike’ amid US, South Korea drills
North Korea threatened Monday to turn Seoul and Washington into “a heap of ashes through a Korean-style pre-emptive nuclear strike” if they showed any signs of aggression toward the North’s territory during their annual military drills. South Korea and the U.S. began the drills despite the threats. Pyongyang’s fiery rhetoric isn’t unusual, but the latest warning comes at a time of more tension following the defection of a senior North Korean diplomat and a U.S. plan to place a defense missile system in South Korea. The North’s “first-strike” units are read to mount retaliatory attacks on South Korean and U.S. forces involved in the drills, according to the statement, carried by Pyongyang’s state media. South Korea expressed “strong” regret over Pyongyang’s warning, saying the drills with the U.S. are purely defensive in nature. Seoul and Washington have repeatedly said they have no intentions of invading Pyongyang.

For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due”(Romans) “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.” ~ Leviticus 20:13 “ But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.” (2 Peter 2:1-3)
Headline: No Scientific Evidence That People Are Born Gay or Transgender, Johns Hopkins Researchers Say
Distinguished scholars at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland released a new 143-page report on Monday that argues that there is not enough definitive scientific evidence available to suggest that gay, lesbian and transgender individuals are born with a certain sexual orientation or gender identity. In the three-part report published by The New Atlantis, Lawrence Mayer, a scholar-in-residence at Johns Hopkins University’s psychiatry department and a professor of statistics and biostatistics at Arizona State University, and Paul McHugh, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins, take on prevailing claims that sexual orientation and gender dysphoria are caused by natural traits. Additionally, the scholars challenge the claim that discrimination and social stigma is the sole reason why those with same-sex attractions or transgender identity suffer higher rates of mental health problems. In the first part, the report argues that there is insufficient evidence to claim that heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual attractions are an innate trait that people are born with. The report goes into detail about past epidemiological studies that have found a modest association between genetic factors and sexual orientation and behaviors. However, the report states that such studies have not been able to provide significant evidence “pointing to particular genes.” The report also looks at other other evidence of hypothesized biological causes, such as prenatal development and hormones but finds that evidence is also limited.

Headline: Volcano blows after multiple earthquakes sparking fear of monster deadly eruption
Mexico’s biggest and most feared volcano, Popocatépetl, has AGAIN roared into life with a major eruption of toxic smoke and ash caused by an earthquake – with fears it could lead to the ‘BIG ONE’. The increased seismic activity this weekend could mean it is bubbling up for a devastating “big one” eruption – the likes of which have not been seen since 2000 when 41,000 people had to evacuate. The latest flurry of eruptions happened over 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday, coinciding with a magnitude 1.8 earthquake. They followed a series of four other eruptions last Monday that were also triggered by two smaller earthquakes over a spate of 24 hours. New footage shows Popocatépetl erupting on Sunday showing steam and gas exploding up into the air. Footage of last Monday’s eruption of El Popo, as it is known locally, showed tons of ash thrown into the sky prompting a warning from Mexico’s National Center for Disaster Prevention
