Headline: Synagogue ruins discovered in Israel CONFIRM Jesus story in New Testament is true
The startling discovery was made at a site called Tel Rechesh, near to Mount Tabor in the Nahal Tavor Nature Reserve in lower Galilee, in a synagogue that dates back to 79 AD – the year when the Romans attacked Jerusalem. The findings confirm that Jesus once preached sermons at the synagogue, according to Motti Aviam, a senior researcher at the Kinneret Institute for Galilean Archaeology at the Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee. He said: “This is the first synagogue discovered in the rural part of the Galilee and it confirms historical information we have about the New Testament, which says that Jesus preached at synagogues in Galilean villages.” Inscriptions found at the synagogue show that synagogues in the region were used for study of the Torah and meetings, rather than a place of worship, making it the perfect platform to Jesus to preach about his views on Judaism and how people should act.

Hamza bin Laden, Osama’s heir, calls on Muslims to overthrow the Saudi monarchy in a newly released audio message. The junior bin Laden’s speech was disseminated by As Sahab, al Qaeda’s propaganda arm, via social media websites on Aug. 17. The SITE Intelligence Group translated the audio, which is accompanied by various images. It is the first episode in a series titled, “Dominion of the Best of the Ummah in the Uprising of the People of the Sacred House.” Much of Hamza’s discussion focuses on the war in Yemen. He blasts the peace talks hosted by Kuwait, saying that after the “Saudi warlords proved their miserable failure on the battlefield, the politicians tried with American pressure to accomplish a victory in the political hallways and corridors in Kuwait.” The parties involved in Yemen’s multi-sided conflict have taken part in the negotiations this year. Hamza claims that the Saudis have therefore “betrayed the Muslims of Yemen twice,” by both failing to “deter the Houthis” and then refusing to “leave alone those who deter them and fight them.” For a variety of reasons, Hamza says, Saudi Arabia is a country “in dire need of change.” He describes Saudi royals and officials as “great criminal thieves” and “agents of the Americans.” According to SITE’s translation, Hamza argues a new government is needed “to free from the Crusaders the place where the Qur’an descended, to protect the Two Holy Mosques from the Safavids [Iranians], and to establish a new regime that governs with the sharia of Allah the Great and Almighty in full.” He also calls for a more equitable distribution of Saudi Arabia’s oil revenues (“vast riches”) and a government that “revives jihad” among the population.

Yemen troops Thursday launched a bid to break a rebel siege of third city Taez, with fierce fighting leaving five soldiers and 13 insurgents dead, military sources said. Soldiers attacked positions of the Iran-backed Shiite Huthi rebels from the east, west and north of the flash-point southwestern city that has been under siege for more than a year, they said. One military source said the troops made “a relative breakthrough” by driving the Huthi rebels from several positions around the city. A pro-government activist, Abdel Majid al-Dhababi, confirmed that troops had made progress after months of trying to break the siege of Taez.

Tons of explosives buried by the Nazis in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula are now in danger of being re-used as Islamic State and other jihadi groups are digging up the desert to uncover this massive cache, the NEWSWEEK reported. Reports confirmed that jihadists use the munitions as materials for making bombs, IEDs and other weapons. Up to 17 million landmines are estimated to be buried in an arid area in Egypt’s northwest around the battleground of Al-Alamein battle, which took place between the Axis powers and Allied forces in 1942. In 2004, a notorious jihadi group known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (which later pledged allegiance to ISIS), massacred 34 people in the resort city of Taba. The explosives used in the bloody attack were reportedly harvested from old mines.

Syria Headline: Syrian regime pounds rebel route to Aleppo
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), backed by Hezbollah and Harakat Al-Nujaba (Iraqi paramilitary), launched a new attack in the southern Aleppo countryside on Thursday, targeting the Jaysh Al-Fateh (Army of Conquest) controlled village of Al-Qarassi. Launching their assault from the Huwayz axis, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies attempted to enter Al-Qarassi from its eastern flank; however, they have been unable to advance very far, due to Jaysh Al-Fateh’s anti-tank missiles. The first attack by the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies resulted in the destruction of a tank after it attempted to bypass Jaysh Al-Fateh’s defenses. In addition to their assault on Al-Qarassi, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies also conducted separate attacks at Tal Sanourabat and Al-‘Amariyah in Aleppo City. Clashes are still ongoing at several fronts, as the Syrian Armed Forces make another attempt at gaining ground in the Aleppo Governorate.

Syria Headline: Islamic State bombs regime-held districts in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor
Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) bombed Wednesday regime-held districts in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province, causing casualties among civilians, activists and eyewitnesses reported. ISIS militants targeted the regime-held districts of al-Joura, Hawiqa and Sinaa with dozens of mortar shells. At least 12 civilians were injured in the attack. “Militants of the Islamic State started a new offensive on areas held by the Syrian regime in Deir ez-Zor. Since Wednesday afternoon the ISIS shelling on Hawiqa, al-Joura and Sinaa has not stopped,” local media activist Samir al-Khalaf told ARA News. The source reported that rescue teams continued their search for victims under the rubble. “So far 12 civilians were injured, some of them are in critical conditions, while the local rescue teams continued their search for survivors under the ruins of the destroyed buildings. The number of casualties may rise in the coming hours,” a doctor in the Deir ez-Zor national hospital told ARA News.

Iraq Headline: Daesh attack kills nine Iraqis near Jordan border
Fighters of the Daesh terror group attacked an Iraqi border guard base near Jordan on Tuesday, killing at least nine people before being beaten back, officers said. The early morning attack involved heavy mortar fire and saw clashes between extremist and border guards defending their position near Rutba, the last town on the desert road before the Trebil border crossing. “Elements from the Daesh gangs attacked the 2nd regiment of the border guard, which is located on the highway between Rutba and Trebil,” a colonel in the border guard said. “We clashed for several hours.” The Joint Operations Command which coordinates Iraq’s fight against Daesh said nine people were killed — eight members of the border guard and a civilian. The colonel said 17 border guards were also wounded in the attack, which occurred in the westernmost part of Anbar province, some 450 kilometres from Baghdad.

Syrian government aircraft bombed Kurdish positions in the divided northeastern city of Hasakeh on Thursday, the first such strikes against a Kurdish-held area of Syria, an AFP correspondent reported. The strikes hit three Kurdish-manned checkpoints and three Kurdish bases, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. They came after heavy clashes broke out on Wednesday between Kurdish fighters who control two-thirds of the city and pro-government militia who control the rest. The clashes have left 11 people dead — four civilians, four Kurdish fighters and three government loyalists, a medical source told AFP.

At least 12 people have been killed and 219 wounded in three bomb attacks in Turkey’s southeast. Blasts at police stations in Van and Elazig killed four police officers and two civilians, reports said. Five soldiers and a village guard died when their vehicle was targeted in Bitlis province. Turkish officials blamed the Kurdish militant group, the PKK, for the attacks, which took place outside Kurdish majority areas in the region. “Our fight against terror will never cease,” said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The PKK has carried a series of bombings targeting the police in the largely Kurdish south-east since a ceasefire with the government broke down last year. Last week, PKK commander Cemil Bayik threatened increased attacks against police in Turkish cities.

The United States is looking at whether Russia has violated a UN Security Council resolution on military dealings with Tehran by using an Iranian air base to carry out strikes inside Syria, the State Department said. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said on Wednesday that US government attorneys had not yet decided whether they think Russia’s use of the Iranian base is a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which was passed as part of the Iran nuclear deal. The resolution governs some military interactions between Iran and other countries, including the supply, sale or transfer of military technologies or the provision of training or financial assistance related to the acquisition of new technologies. “As I understand it, it’s not just supplying the Iranians certain weapons or certain offensive weaponry. It’s more complex than that,” Toner told a news briefing. “Our lawyers are looking at it. We haven’t made an assessment,” he added.

The Obama administration said Thursday that a $400 million cash payment to Iran seven months ago was contingent on the release of a group of American prisoners. It is the first time the U.S. has so clearly linked the two events, which critics have painted as a hostage-ransom arrangement. State Department spokesman John Kirby repeated the administration’s line that the negotiations to return the Iranian money — from a decades-old military-equipment deal with the U.S.-backed shah in the 1970s — were conducted separately from the talks to free four U.S. citizens in Iran. But he said the U.S. withheld the delivery of the cash as leverage until Iran permitted the Americans to leave the country.

Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan are now operating in more territories than they were prior to the 2001 US campaign, a report by private intelligence agency Stratfor cautions. The paper also warns of the Taliban’s closer ties with Islamic State. Despite partial success by the Afghan military, their action is being “overshadowed by the Taliban’s much larger gains elsewhere,” Stratfor says in its latest assessment. The agency warns that the “Taliban now operates in more territories in Afghanistan than it has in 2001” when the US started its military campaign in the country to drive the group out. A major point of concern is Afghanistan’s largest province of Helmand, which is almost completely under the control of insurgents. “Despite heavy U.S. airstrikes in the area, the Taliban – who already control 80 percent of the region – have steadily encroached on the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah,” Stratfor warns. The group is now engaged in a large-scale offensive to seize the remaining territories in Helmand. Despite joint efforts by the Afghan army and US Air Force, insurgents continue to push forward in other provinces. On August 15 the Taliban seized a key district in northern Baghlan province, just 100 kilometers away from the country’s capital Kabul.

Daesh in Libya has carried out nine suicide bombings in one day in a failed bid to hold a central district of Sirte, pro-government forces said Wednesday. The attacks on Tuesday in the coastal city left nine pro-government fighters dead and 82 wounded, said Reda Issa, a spokesman for forces allied with the unity government. They took place as forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA), backed by US airstrikes, advanced on Sirte’s central District Two as part of a three-month offensive to oust the terrorists from the city. A Daesh fighter blew up his vehicle close to a group of soldiers and journalists, wounding several, said an AFP photographer. Five of the bombers attacked using cars, one on a motorbike and three on foot, said the pro-GNA forces, which published several photos of the bombers’ corpses.

Headline: DRC Sees 2nd Day of Protests Against Massacres
Demonstrators took to the streets in eastern DRC for a second day to protest the massacre of at least 50 people in Beni territory during the weekend. Three people died when a demonstration turned violent Wednesday in Beni town, according to the United Nations. This latest round of protests in eastern Congo’s North Kivu province follows the killing of at least 50 people in a village on the outskirts of Beni last Saturday by assailants suspected to belong to the ADF rebel movement. The U.N. Mission in Congo reported the killers were disguised as park rangers and detained people returning from their fields before murdering them. The United Nations says the Beni protest led to the deaths of a policeman, a demonstrator and a third person lynched by a mob, and that a soldier and several civilians were wounded.

Clashes between police and protesters in Mali over the arrest of an anti-government activist have left at least three people dead and several others wounded. North Korea’s Atomic Energy Institute, which has jurisdiction over the country’s Yongbyon nuclear facilities, also told Kyodo it had been producing highly enriched uranium necessary for nuclear arms and power “as scheduled.” “We have reprocessed spent nuclear fuel rods removed from a graphite-moderated reactor,” the institute told Kyodo in a written interview. The institute did not disclose the amount of plutonium or enriched uranium it had produced, Kyodo said, but it has been understood for months that North Korea has resumed plutonium production at the site.

Headline: Global central banks dump U.S. debt at record pace
In the first six months of this year, foreign central banks sold a net $192 billion of U.S. Treasury bonds, more than double the pace in the same period last year, when they sold $83 billion. China, Japan, France, Brazil and Colombia led the pack of countries dumping U.S. debt. It’s the largest selloff of U.S. debt since at least 1978, according to Treasury Department data. “Net selling of U.S. notes and bonds year to date thru June is historic,” says Peter Boockvar, chief market analyst at the Lindsey Group, an investing firm in Virginia. U.S. Treasurys are considered one of the safest assets in the world. A lot of countries keep their cash holdings in U.S. government bonds. Many countries have been selling their holdings of U.S. Treasuries so they can get cash to help prop up their currencies if they’re losing value. The selloff is a sign of pockets of weakness in the global economy. Low oil prices, China’s economic slowdown and currencies losing value are all weighing down global growth, which the IMF described as “fragile” earlier in the year.

New historical documents revealed over the weekend further refute the Palestinians’ attempts to rewrite history, especially pertaining to the Jewish claim to the Temple Mount. two historical documents — “A brief Guide to Al-Haram Al-Sharif,” issued in 1924 by Jerusalem Grand Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini’s Supreme Muslim Council, and an official Jordanian tourist map from 1956 — clearly identify only the familiar Al-Aqsa mosque compound as a Muslim site. The Supreme Muslim Council’s document states that “the site’s affiliation with Solomon’s Temple is undisputed.” The Jordanian map, which is in the possession of map collector Haim Steinberger, clearly indicates that at the time, Jordan recognized only the southern part of the compound, where Al-Aqsa mosque is, as Muslim territory. Both documents contradict recent claims by the Palestinians and the Waqf, the trust that controls and manages the current Islamic edifices on and around Al-Aqsa mosque, that the site is only holy to Muslims.

Clashes broke out at the Temple Mount compound on Sunday morning as Muslim rioted against Jews touring the area in commemoration of Tisha B’av, the Hebrew date on which both temples were destroyed, according to Jewish tradition. Earlier, thousands of Jewish mourners gathered throughout the night at the adjacent Western Wall plaza to cite lamentations. Over 400 Jews entered the Temple Mount compound during the standard visitation hours, but some 40 others were barred from entering the site after Muslim rioters clashed with police forces and attempted to attack the visitors. Palestinian sources reported that 15 people were wounded in the clashes, and the police said they had detained a man for impeding policemen in duty. A total of 19 Jews were removed from the site by police forces, and two more were arrested, for visibly mourning during the visit—crying, tearing their shirts, or reciting Jewish verses. Such behaviors are considered violations of visitation rules, which prohibit Jewish prayer at the contested holy site.

The US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Israel too have warned the octogenarian Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas against holding the Oct. 8 municipal elections he has called for the Palestinian-ruled West Bank towns and locales and the Gaza Strip. Abbas had hoped to catch the Islamist Hamas off guard at a time when it was in hot water in the Arab arena (although Abbas is in plenty of trouble himself) and the Gaza Strip under its rule was in desperate financial straits and domestic pressure. Instead, Hamas turned the tables on him and announced that this time, unlike in 2012, when the fundamentalist Palestinian group opted out of the vote, it was more than ready to put up candidates to challenge local Fatah politicians for local office. More than a million people have already registered to vote. To convince the Palestinians that he means business and that campaigning should be serious, Abbas has embarked on what he calls his “Jerusalem gambit.” Knowing that Israeli will not let the Palestinian Authority place West Bank voting booths in East Jerusalem, which is home to 130,000 Palestinians, his plan is to declare elections for a Palestinian municipality for the eastern part of Israel’s capital in competition to the Israeli municipality. He has chosen the village of Abu Dis (Area B) as its seat and already installed there a “Palestinian governor of Jerusalem,” who is recognized by no one and known to very few. For Abbas, this maneuver presents another hazard. If he fails to get the vote out for the “Palestinian Jerusalem municipality”, he loses face. On the other hand, if Israel scotches this attempt to re-divide its capital, the Palestinian leader will have a convenient pretext for calling off the West Bank municipal vote and pinning the blame on Israel.

Lebanese state media say that a roadside bomb near the country’s eastern border with Syria has wounded two Lebanese soldiers. The National News Agency says the explosion struck an army vehicle in the Arsal region and that the wounds sustained by the troops were minor. The blast was followed by the soldiers opening fire with heavy weapons at militant positions nearby. Violence from neighboring Syria’s civil war has spilled across the border into Lebanon in the past. ISIS and al-Qaeda militants briefly seized the Lebanese border town of Arsal in 2014, before Lebanese security forces pushed them back to the frontier. The Lebanese army shares security responsibilities with the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group in the area.

Headline: 20 Killed When Airstrike Hits MSF Hospital in Northern Yemen
In Yemen, an airstrike has hit a hospital run by the French medical charity Doctors Without Borders. A Yemeni official says more than 20 people were killed in the strike which he said was carried out by the Saudi-led coalition. Amateur video shown by pro-Houthi Yemeni media showed part of the rudimentary two-story Abs Hospital complex on fire and a number of bodies lying in the courtyard of the facility. Hilal Soufi, deputy governor of Hajjah province, said human remains were strewn around the facility. He said it was the only working hospital in the area and that it served four or five other adjacent regions. Doctors Without Borders indicated on its website that the airstrike took place Monday, noting that MSF has supported the Abs Hospital since July 2015. A witness told the Reuters news agency that it was difficult for medics to evacuate the wounded from the hospital since Saudi-coalition warplanes were still flying overhead. Saudi-coalition officials have not yet commented. Other Saudi-coalition airstrikes were reported in northern Yemen overnight.

The battle for Manbij — a key supply route for the jihadists between the Turkish border and their self-declared capital in Raqa — lasted more than two months. “We announce… the creation of the Al-Bab Military Council” tasked with driving ISIS from the town in Aleppo province, said the Syrian Democratic Forces alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters in a statement, two days after driving the last jihadists from Manbij. The last remaining ISIS fighters abandoned the city of Manbij near the Turkish border on Friday after a rout that the Pentagon said showed the extremists were “on the ropes”.

Syria Headline: ISIS says bus blast killed 50 fighters at Syria-Turkey crossing
ISIS claimed a suicide bombing on a bus in Syria near the Atmeh border crossing with Turkey late on Sunday that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said killed at least 32 people.
The bus was carrying fighters from foreign-backed rebel factions, local rebel sources said. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in an online statement on Sunday, saying the blast killed 50 fighters from the Failaq al-Sham and the Nour al-Din al-Zinki Movement groups. The statement said the rebels were from US-backed groups who were travelling to fight ISIS in northern Aleppo province.
Pictures circulating on social media showed the burnt-out remains of a bus and medics treating wounded people. Turkey’s CNN Turk television reported that the explosion occurred at the entrance to the Atmeh refugee camp in Syria, near the frontier crossing, citing local sources. The Observatory said it had received reports that two Turkish soldiers had been killed in the attack. Turkish officials were not immediately available for comment.

Iraq Headline: US-backed Iraqi Kurds take back villages outside ISIS hub Mosul
Kuridsh forces on Monday liberated a handful of villages in northern Iraq from Islamic State control and reached a key strategic bridge on the Gwer front as part of ongoing offensives against the militants. The military Pershmega said it retook three areas near Erbil on the Gwer front with the help of a U.S.-led coalition — and killed nearly three dozen Islamic State militants. The recaptured villages were Hasudiya, Kanhashai Bchuk and Kanhasai Gawra, officials said. The Gwer Bridge connects Nineveh, Erbil and Kirkuk. Pershmega forces have been fighting militants in the northern Iraq Kurdish area for two days in an attempt to restore areas in which control had been surrendered.

Kurdish rebels detonated a car bomb at a police station in southeast Turkey on Monday, killing two police officers and a young child, officials said. Some 25 other people were wounded. The attack targeted a traffic-police station on a highway linking the city of Diyarbakir and the town of Batman, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. The explosion tore a large crater on the highway while television footage showed a three-story building that appeared to have been gutted by the blast. Officials blamed the attack on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. The Diyarbakir governor’s office said eight police officers were among the wounded.

The Russian military is yet to announce how many TU-22M3 will be operating from the Iranian airbase. This development indicates significantly improved political relations between Iran and Russia, two priceless allies for Damascus. Michael T. Lawhorn, a Kabul-based U.S. military spokesman, told Fox News. Faredoon Obiadi, chief of the police’s criminal investigations department, said an army officer was one of the two wounded. Monday’s attack took place at a main square that was also close to the country’s Supreme Court. Obiadi said a so-called sticky bomb attached to a military vehicle triggered the blast. No group claimed responsibility for the bombing, but the Taliban have stepped up attacks across Afghanistan. Separately, authorities on Monday confirmed the Taliban have overrun a police headquarters in the Dahna-e-Ghori district in northern Baghlan province. There was no immediate word on casualties in Baghlan. The Taliban claimed they killed and captured “many” policemen. Multiple reports over the past week have indicated that the Islamic State continues to lose ground in Sirte, which is the so-called caliphate’s stronghold in Libya. In an attempt to counter these reports, Amaq News Agency posted the infographic seen above on Aug. 14. Amaq is part of the Islamic State’s propaganda machine. Amaq claims the jihadists still control four neighborhoods in Sirte, after killing more than 823 fighters belonging to the UN-backed Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) and shooting down two fighter jets. Amaq also alleges that special forces from four Western nations — the US, UK, France and Italy — are involved in the offensive against the Islamic State in the city. Citing official government statements and press reporting, The Long War Journal noted last week that all four of these countries are in fact operating inside Libya. The US is directly backing Al Bunyan Al Marsoos in Sirte and the Italian press says Italy’s special forces are as well. Of course, given that America’s Western allies are not keen to broadcast their involvement, it is not clear what specific roles, if any, they are playing in Sirte.

They depicted a chaotic scene, with police claiming that demonstrators were throwing objects and firing shots in the area while officers in tactical gear worked to quell the situation. Police say one officer was taken to the hospital after being injured when a rock smashed through the windshield of his patrol car. Health data released Friday, shows Zika cases are growing in Southern California and throughout the state, where two babies have been born with virus-related defects. The number of people reported to have Zika infections in the U.S. more than doubled in the past six weeks – from 935 as of June 29 to 1,962 – and tripled in U.S. territories from 2,026 to 6,618, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. California’s cases – all travel-related – rose from 114 reported July 29 to 153 reported Friday, the California Department of Public Health reported. The first two babies born in the state with Zika-caused microcephaly, or abnormally small heads, were reported Aug. 4. Los Angeles, with the state’s highest case number, grew from 24 reported July 29 to 34. Orange County has 10. This has been achieved through the careful cultivation of a working relationship with rebel militias on the other side of the Golan Heights border, along with a readiness to act on occasion decisively to neutralize emergent dangers. The Assad regime and its allies control only a few points along the border. Most of it is held by rebel forces, described by IDF soldiers stationed at one of the border posts as a mix of Jabhat al-Nusra and other free army groups. The southern part of the border, however, is the area of greatest concern. This is held by the Khaled Ibn al-Walid Brigade, a franchise of Islamic State, formerly known as the Shuhada al-Yarmuk Brigades. The Israeli assumption is that, at a certain point, this organization will almost certainly turn its guns against Israel. In the meantime, the two sides watch each other closely. How will all this end? Will the division of Syria hold, making the militia arrangements across the border and the relationships created permanent? Perhaps. But in judging the likely future direction of events, it is necessary to widen the lens and observe events further north. One of the key battles of the Syrian civil war is under way in Aleppo province, far to the north. The regime sealed off rebel-controlled eastern Aleppo in early August. The rebels now appear to have broken the siege. But the outcome is not yet decided. If the regime succeeds in taking Aleppo city back in its entirety, this will mark a decisive setback for the rebellion. It will open the way for a regime campaign to retake the rural north. If this, too, succeeds, it will then be the turn of the southern border area. Such a turn of events is not inevitable, and may not unfold. But if it does, it will mean that the tense but stable arrangements that Israel has built up over the previous half-decade will come to an end. It is possible that the preparations on the border fence are in anticipation of this eventuality. Should it materialize, the virtual security zone established by Israel across the borderline will prove to have been just one of the transient, though fascinating, episodes of the Syrian civil war.

Syria Headline: Syrian Army, Hezbollah launch surprise offensive to capture key town in Latakia
The Syrian Marines, backed by the Desert Hawks Brigade and Hezbollah, launched an imperative offensive on Friday to capture the key Latakia town of Kabbani near the Idlib border. The offensive was launched from two different axes, with the Syrian Marines and Desert Hawks striking Jaysh Al-Fateh’s (Army of Conquest) defenses at the Zuwayqat Mountains, while their allies from Hezbollah attacked from the small hilltops overlooking Kabbani from the west. Following a fierce battle at the Zuwayqat Mountains on Friday afternoon, the Syrian Armed Forces imposed full control over this site, killing several jihadist rebels in the process of their advance. With the Zuwayqat Mountains under their control, the Syrian Armed Forces are now in position to strike Kabbani from the southern perimeter; however, they have yet to attack the town today.

Perhaps the most notable development was reported today by Turkey’s Gunes newspaper, which said that as part of the discussion between Putin and Erdogan on Tuesday, the Turkish president suggested to abandon the US dollar in bilateral trade between Turkey and Russia, and instead to transact directly in lira and rubles. This would “benefit both Russia and Turkey”, Erdogan allegedly said in his August 9 meeting in St Petersburg, adding that this would relieve the lira from the USD’s upward pressure. The reason Erdogan is concerned about exchange rates is because recently Turkish inflation soared by nearly 8% Y/Y, and the recent devaluation of the TRY against the USD has only poured more oil on the fire. Needless to say, such a bilateral agreement would further infuriate Turkey’s European “friends”, permanently halting Turkish accession into the customs union, in accordance with Austria’s recent demands, and would in turn lead to a dissolution of the refugee agreement that is still keeping millions in refugees away from Europe in general and Germany, and Merkel’s plunging popularity ratings, in particular. Which, incidentally, means that not only Erdogan, but now also Putin, holds key leverage over the career of Europe’s most important politician.

Khabir actually brags in an Italian newspaper article published last week that the border region is so open that he “could get in with a handful of men, and kill thousands of people in Texas or in Arizona in the space of a few hours.” Today Judicial Watch confirmed reports that ISIS is operating in Mexico. Judicial Watch reported, via Free Republic: An ISIS operative arrested and criminally charged in Ohio this month has confirmed that the terrorist group has cells in Mexico, according to federal authorities. Judicial Watch has reported this for years, documenting it in a series of articles as part of an ongoing investigation on the connection between drug cartels, corruption and terrorism on the southern border. A roadside bomb hit a Pakistani security vehicle and wounded 13 people on Thursday in the southwestern city of Quetta, days after a suicide bombing at a hospital killed at least 74 people, most of them lawyers, officials and media said. The driver of the police pickup truck managed to drive the damaged vehicle to the Civil Hospital of Quetta — the same facility hit in Monday’s attack — to get the wounded to medical treatment. The Chinese military appears to be dramatically increasing its presence around a key island in the South China Sea, sending a strong message to Washington. As Beijing continues its land reclamation projects in the South China Sea, Washington has remained adamant about one island in particular: Scarborough Shoal. Located northeast of the Spratly archipelago, it is claimed by China, Taiwan, and the Philippines, and the US has maintained that any attempts to militarize the shoal would cross a “red line.” While China has maintained a small presence of two or three maritime security vessels around Scarborough Shoal, that number has escalated in the last few weeks. US officials familiar with intelligence reports tell the Washington Free Beacon that there are now over a dozen Chinese ships in the area. A Hezbollah drone struck militant posts in northern Syria Tuesday, party-run media said, in the first known report of the group using aircraft to strike enemy targets. Hezbollah’s War Media Center said in a tweet that a “resistance-operated aircraft accurately struck several militant targets in the town of Khalsa” in Aleppo’s southern countryside. Saudi Arabia says its air force has intercepted two ballistic missiles fired from Yemen into the kingdom. A Saudi military statement says the missiles were fired on Wednesday morning toward the cities of Abha and Khamis Mushait, both of which are close to the kingdom’s southern border with Yemen. It says the missiles caused no damage. Yemen’s Shiite rebels known as Houthis are known to have a supply of Soviet-era Scud missiles, seized from the country’s military stockpiles. A Saudi-led coalition has been battling the rebels and their allies since March 2015 in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government. Peace talks to end the conflict collapsed last weekend and Saudi-led forces resumed heavy airstrikes in Yemen on Tuesday. The ballistic missiles likely were a Houthi response to those strikes.

Syria Headline: Large Hezbollah convoy arrives in southern Aleppo
The jihadist-led Jaish al Fatah broke the siege of the rebel-held eastern Aleppo on Saturday following a week-long battle. The Iranian media outlet Fars News Agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported yesterday on the deployments of IRGC-backed Lebanese Hezbollah and Iraqi Harakat al Nujaba to the southern area of Aleppo. State media have also acknowledged the fatalities of two Iranians since Saturday, including a special forces officer. Lebanese Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Battalion entered the Hamdaniyeh area in western Aleppo to retake the Ramouseh area in the southwest, according to Fars. Ramouseh is the opposition’s access point to Aleppo. The Iranian outlet followed up with a report shortly afterwards quoting a Nujaba official that 2,000 of the militia’s highly trained forces have arrived in Aleppo. These forces have participated in “many operations liberating areas” of Aleppo province, according to Fars. Nujaba’s spokesman has said that it and Hezbollah “are the twins of resistance that can never be loosened or separated.” Both groups have acknowledged fatalities, including field commanders, during the latest battle for Aleppo.

Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) is holding hundreds of civilians hostage in a Syrian town north of Aleppo province, where heavy fighting continued Tuesday between the group and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Omar al-Masri, a fighter with the Shams al-Shamal (Northern Sun) Battalions –a rebel group fighting alongside the US-backed SDF– said that their forces have liberated most of Manbij city north of Aleppo from ISIS militants. “ISIS only holds 3% of the city now, but the group has taken civilians as hostage,” Masri told ARA News in central Manbij. He said it’s difficult to attack the group’s final position in the city. “After securing the civilian people, we will take all of Manbij within hours,” he said.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched an offensive on Monday to capture the Al-Walid border-crossing from the Iraqi Armed Forces after losing this site to the latter last week. ISIS began their offensive by attacking the Iraqi Army’s defenses from the Syrian province of Al-Sweida; this assault would last for nearly three hours on Monday. Following several infiltration attempts, the Islamic State ended their offensive at the Al-Walid border-crossing, leaving the Iraqi Army in full control of this strategic point near the Al-Anbar Governorate. In addition to this attack, the Islamic State also attacked the key desert village of Rutbah; however, this assault would also be foiled by the Iraqi Armed Forces.

Iraq Headline: Attacks outside Baghdad kill at least 10 people
Iraqi officials say separate attacks outside Baghdad have killed at least 10 people. Police say the deadliest attack Wednesday took place in the town of Latifiyah, where a suicide bomber struck an army checkpoint, killing four civilians and three soldiers. They added that 11 others were wounded. The town is located about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad. Police say three more civilians were killed and 12 wounded in a bomb explosion at an outdoor market in Baghdad’s southeast suburb of Nahrawan. Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures.

At least five Turkish soldiers were killed and about ten others were wounded on Wednesday when the armored vehicle in which they were traveling was hit by a roadside bomb. Afghan troops are being deployed to the capital of the key southern province of Helmand (red area on map) amid intense fighting with the Taliban in surrounding areas and fears the city could fall to the insurgents within days, officials said Wednesday. According to Kareem Atal, the head of Helmand’s provincial council, Taliban insurgents have completely surrounded Lashkar Gah after weeks of intense fighting across the province. Fresh clashes have erupted in South Sudan between government forces and former rebels, a month after deadly violence which threatened a fragile peace accord, local authorities said Tuesday. The new fighting broke out between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and supporters of former vice-president Riek Machar near the town of Yei, more than 150 kilometers southwest of the capital Juba. It began two days ago in Mugwo, south of Yei on the Kaya Highway, a key road link for supplies en route to Uganda, a local official said. “There is insecurity on the road,” Stephen Ladu, information minister for Yei River state, told AFP. “Clashes started this morning in Kimba,” southwest of Yei along a road leading to the Democratic Republic of Congo, he added. In recent weeks, after the fighting in Juba, other clashes were reported between government forces and former rebels not far from the capital and in the northern town of Leer, although details have been scarce because of the security situation.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) shot down a fighter jet owned by Fajr Libya militia in the northern coastal city of Sirte, killing its pilot Gen. Mukhtar Fakrun. The terror group claimed responsibility for downing the L-39 aircraft via its official social media account Aamaq Agency. Fajr Libya militia has launched a wide-scale offensive dubbed “Bunyan Marsous” against ISIS positions in Sirte. The military operation is backed by US airstrikes as well. On Monday, July 8th, US fighter jets conducted 12 airstrikes against the terror group in the coastal city, killing scores of jihadists and destroying several staging points and vehicles.

The United States has deployed three B-2 stealth bombers to the U.S. territory of Guam as North Korea provocations continue to heighten tensions in the region. The U.S. Strategic Command said Tuesday the B-2 bombers were moved from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported. The deployment comes less than a week after North Korea fired two ballistic missiles. One took Japan by surprise when it landed in Tokyo’s exclusive economic zone. Japan recently ordered its Self-Defense Forces to intercept and destroy incoming flying objects. The command, issued on Monday, is to apply to all incoming projectiles.

Vietnam has discreetly fortified several of its islands in the disputed South China Sea with new mobile rocket launchers capable of striking China’s runways and military installations across the vital trade route, according to Western officials. Diplomats and military officers told Reuters that intelligence shows Hanoi has shipped the launchers from the Vietnamese mainland into position on five bases in the Spratly islands in recent months, a move likely to raise tensions with Beijing. The launchers have been hidden from aerial surveillance and they have yet to be armed, but could be made operational with rocket artillery rounds within two or three days, according to the three sources. Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry said the information was “inaccurate”, without elaborating. Deputy Defence Minister, Senior Lieutenant-General Nguyen Chi Vinh, told Reuters in Singapore in June that Hanoi had no such launchers or weapons ready in the Spratlys but reserved the right to take any such measures. “It is within our legitimate right to self-defense to move any of our weapons to any area at any time within our sovereign territory,” he said.

Headline: World Vision: a Christian charity on an anti-Israel mission
We now know, due to recent revelations coming out of Israel, that World Vision has been funding the military wing of Hamas, known to most of the world as the Hamas terrorist organization, for decades. World Vision is a Christian charity on an anti-Israel mission. This can clearly be seen in its fraudulently biased website description of Israel and what they call the ‘West Bank’, properly known as Judea & Samaria. If the unemployment level of Jerusalem, ‘West Bank’ and Gaza is 46% and the poverty rate 36%, surely a large proportion of the blame must be directed at the corrupt and violent political overlords, namely the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. But not according to World Vision who point an accusing finger only against the Jewish state. They write that “children experience harassment and violence” from soldiers and “settlers”. The lack of adequate educational facilities is not due to Hamas using schools to store rockets or to aim them at Israeli civilians but, according to World Vision, it is due to demolitions. They do not mention which schools, if any, have been demolished by Israel.

Arrests and detention of employees of the Islamic trust have sparked mounting tensions on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, which is under its religious control, less than a week before the Jewish fast of Tisha B’Av, which marks the destruction of both Jewish temples in antiquity. Some 10 days ago Waqf employees attacked several Israeli archaeologists who were touring the Temple Mount, claiming that one of them was collecting olives that had fallen to the ground. Three of the attackers were arrested and are expected to be charged with assault. “One of the archaeologists in the group started to photograph [the Waqf attackers] and he was immediately set on by a Waqf man who hit him,” said Zachi Dvira, one of the archaeologists who had organized the tour. “As a result, [the archaeologist] said he was going to the nearby gate to call the police. When he started to walk there, four Waqf men jumped on him, threw him to the ground, beat him with their fists and kicked him. He managed to get out of there somehow.” These events follow a decision two months ago to block the Waqf from renovating a structure it owns on the mount, to turn it into restrooms. The structure was closed down by the police.

In a move some believe has prophetic significance, hundreds of African kings, many of them with Jewish roots, are heading to Israel this October to observe the Feast of Tabernacles, or Sukkot. The effort is led by King Ayi of Togo, with an eye toward rediscovering the Jewish roots of many tribal people who believe they are part of the diaspora. They will observe the feast at the Western Wall, believed to be the only remaining retaining wall of the Second Temple Mount. The kings plan to sing out their love for Israel and strengthen their faith that the Messiah is coming soon. King Ayi was crowned in 1994 as King of the Ayigbe people of the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, and Benin. The seat of this Kingdom was in Togo, although most historians confirm it started in Accra, Ghana. He presently lives in exile in the U.S. In 2002, at the second World Conference of the Council of Chiefs and Kings of Africa, King Ayi was crowned by his peers as head of the Organization of Kings and Queens of Africa, in the republic of Benin. At the following conference in 2005, he announced his desire to bring all 350 African kings to Israel, to recite the “Shema,”, the Jewish declaration of faith, at the Kotel, or Western Wall in Jerusalem. Syria Headline: Daesh hits U.S.-backed Syrian rebel base near border
Daesh (ISIS) suicide bombers Sunday attacked a military base for U.S.-backed fighters near the Syrian-Iraqi border, leaving several dead before blowing themselves up, rebel sources and the militants said Sunday. They said the dawn attack on the heavily defended military camp near the Syrian Tanf border crossing with Iraq involved at least one explosive-laden vehicle that rammed the gate of the base which was set up by the fledgling, Pentagon-trained New Syria Army. Another rebel said the militants were not able to storm the heavily fortified camp where large sand barriers have been erected to prevent such incursions and attacks in an area where the militants operate with hit and run attacks. “It’s a well-defended camp and they tried to storm it but the suicide vehicle was targeted and hit,” said Said Seif al-Qalamoni, a rebel familiar with operating in the same area. He added that there were at least one dead and several wounded. Qalamoni said jets from the U.S.-led coalition against Daesh (ISIS) shortly after struck at several vehicles believed to be driven by the militants in the sparsely populated desert area.

The nuclear accord signed a year ago with Iran has become a hot US presidential campaign issue. On Thursday, Aug. 4, US President Barack Obama speaking at the Pentagon said the agreement “has worked exactly the way we said it would,” and even “Israeli defense officials are behind [it]… and now recognize the efficacy of the accord” and that the Iranians “no longer have the short term breakout capacity that would allow them to develop nuclear weapons.” Hillary Clinton declared at the Democratic Party convention which gave her the presidential nomination: “We put a lid on Iran’s nuclear program without firing a single shot.” Both these claims may be called hyperbolic at best and drew a response from Tel Aviv: “The Israeli defense establishment believes that agreements have value only if they are based on reality. They have no value if the facts on the ground are opposite to the ones the agreement is based on.” Documents reaching debkafile’s intelligence sources in recent weeks bare some facts contained in unpublished sections of the nuclear accord – Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPA) – that Iran signed in Vienna with the US, China, France, Russia, retain and Germany on July 14 2015. This data is at odds with the official version that accord delayed Iran’s short-term breakout capacity to a nuclear bomb by ten years plus one year. It is now demonstrated that if Tehran decides to violate the accord Iran retains the capability to achieve this goal in months – not years.

Amnesty says that 67 people died when “security forces fired live bullets at peaceful protesters” in different towns and cities in the Oromo region over the weekend. There were clashes between security forces and protesters on Sunday in Bahir Dar, the Amhara regional capital. Opposition activists have given similar figures for the number of people killed.

A United nations peacekeeper was killed and four others wounded Sunday in northeastern Mali, when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb. Headline: Pakistan hospital bomb attack kills dozens in Quetta
A suicide bomb attack has killed at least 70 people at a hospital in Quetta in south-west Pakistan, officials say. About 120 others were injured in the blast, which happened at the entrance to the emergency department where the body of a prominent lawyer shot dead earlier on Monday was being brought. The casualties included lawyers and journalists accompanying the body of Bilal Anwar Kasi. A faction of the Pakistani Taliban has said it was behind the bombing. Japan ordered its military on Monday to be ready at any time to shoot down any North Korean missiles that threaten to strike Japan, putting its forces on a state of alert for at least three months, a defense ministry official and media said. Up to now, Japan has issued temporary orders when it had indications of an imminent North Korean missile launch that it has canceled after a projectile had been launched. However, because some test firings are hard to detect, it has decided to put its military on standby for a longer period. The order will be reviewed after three months, state broadcaster NHK said.

Headline: Russia moves tanks to European border amid reports of deadly Crimea shooting
It has been reported that Russian tanks have been spotted moving into occupied territory in Crimea, which was seized following an operation carried out by Vladimir Putin’s forces in 2014. Witnesses have reported large amounts of Russian military hardware massing near the towns of Dzhankoy and Armyansk in northern Crimea, close to the border with Ukraine. Norman Dzhelalov, deputy chairman of Crimean Tatar Mejlis – which represents the peninsula’s ethnic Tatar group, claimed on Facebook that tanks had arrived. He wrote: “Witnesses report that large groups of Russian military hardware have been massed near Armyansk and Dzhankoy. “Dzhankoy has been cordoned off by troops with tanks and other equipment.” Video footage shows Russian armoured trucks and troop transporters as part of a large military convoy moving down the street. The footage uploaded to YouTube shows the vehicles moving through the city of Kerch near the Russian border. Russia also closed its checkpoints along the Crimean border with Ukraine on Sunday morning.

At least 21 people have died in floods that hit the Macedonian capital, Skopje, following torrential rain. The victims’ bodies were found on Sunday morning after the storm passed. Several people are still missing. Some of the victims drowned in their cars. Parts of the city’s ring road were swept away in the floods, dragging cars into nearby fields. Three-and-a-half inches (93mm) of rain fell in Skopje in the storm – more than the average for the whole of August. We will not rest until all the damages caused have been repaired,” Moreno tweeted. Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte tweeted from his verified Twitter account that there were 11 deaths in his state “due to the hill’s mudslides in the mountainous areas of the state.” Before becoming a tropical storm as it moved across the region and then being downgraded to a tropical depression, the storm was Hurricane Earl.

An underground barrier to defend against Hamas attack tunnels is on the way following a call from the Defense Ministry for companies to bid to construct the new defensive line around the Gaza Strip. The closed tender has been submitted to 20 Israeli contracting companies. The first part of the defensive underground barrier will go along 10 kilometers of the Strip, with plans to extend the barrier around the entirety of the 60 kilometer border with Israel – thereby completely encircling Gaza. The concrete barriers will extend several stories underground and will include above ground sections as well. Besides being used as a physical barrier against terror tunnels which cross into Israel, the sophisticated barrier will also be able to detect tunnel digging close to it, something which will enable the IDF to destroy these terror tunnels before they pose a threat.

A video purportedly by Egypt’s Islamic State affiliate has delivered a threat to Israel, saying the Jewish state will soon “pay a high price.” The 35-minute video, posted on social media this week, also purports to show footage of alleged attacks by IS militants against Egyptian security forces in the Sinai Peninsula. It ends with footage depicting what is said to be the killing of two Egyptian policemen, each shot in the head. The video’s authenticity could not immediately be verified but its contents and production style mirrored previous IS propaganda material. According to a report in Bloomberg news last month, an unnamed former senior Israeli official said Israel has carried out drone strikes against jihadists in the peninsula. The airstrikes were conducted with Egypt’s knowledge and blessing, according to the ex-official, who spoke to the US-based news site on condition of anonymity. Headline: Black Lives Matter movement declares war on ‘Israeli Apartheid’
The radical “Black Lives Matter” movement released a formal platform on Monday, singling out Israel for what it calls the “genocide” against Palestinian Arabs and “Israeli Apartheid”. BLM, which emerged in the summer of 2013 following the acquittal of George Zimmerman, a Hispanic man who shot and killed an African American teenager in self-defense, aims to combat what it calls the “War on Black People”. The Black Lives Matter movement alleges that the United States actively targets and oppresses African Americans, while promoting “global imperialism” abroad. While the bulk of the BLM platform lambasts the United States for what it deems systemic racism, the document also singles out one foreign country for not only criticism, but specific policies. In fact, while there is scant reference to other countries in the document, Israel is mentioned 10 times, and “Palestine” 9 times. And while other countries are mentioned in passing, Israel is the only foreign country targeted by the platform. Israel is referred to as a “human rights violator” in the BLM platform, and indeed is the only country mentioned by name in that regard. After accusing Israel of “systematic discrimination” against Palestinian Arabs, apartheid-like policies, and even outright genocide, the platform calls for an end to US foreign aid to the Jewish state, which should instead be diverted to reparations for “victims” of “American war-making” like Iraq, and Libya, as well as African Americans descended from slaves in the American South.

Headline: US Nuclear Airbase in Turkey at Risk
On Sunday, July 31, thousands of Turks mobbed the gates of the NATO airbase at Incirlik, threatening to seize the facility from the U.S. for allegedly supporting a failed military coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Earlier, the base was cut-off from electricity and plunged into blackout, allegedly according to some sources by orders of the Erdogan government.
Stored at Incirlik are as many as 90 B-61 tactical nuclear bombs, according to estimates by various press reports. This would comprise half of European NATO’s tactical nuclear deterrent. Some 180 U.S. B-61 nuclear bombs are stored in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Turkey for use by U.S. and NATO fighter-bombers. The U.S. should immediately remove all nuclear weapons from Turkey and relocate them in European NATO countries or bring them back to the United States. Why the Obama administration has not yet done so is a mystery.

Douglas Munjere, 30, a graduate protester who is jobless years after completing university, said Zimbabwean youth need jobs for survival. “What we are saying is simple, we need jobs,” Munjere said, adding, “All these people should be at work but there are no jobs.” Zimbabwe has witnessed demonstrations for and against President Mugabe in recent months.

Protests have once again erupted in Indian-controlled Kashmir after two civilians were reportedly shot dead by government forces amid a curfew in the region. According to locals, government forces fired tear gas in Pampore after thousands of people attended funeral prayers for a young man killed overnight. A young man accompanying him was critically wounded and later hospitalized in Srinagar, a police officer said on condition of anonymity. A private guard was also killed overnight at a bank in Srinagar with his family blaming paramilitary soldiers for his death.

Ninety people are undergoing hospital checks in remote northern Russia because of an anthrax outbreak that killed a boy on Monday. Eight people are confirmed as infected with anthrax, a rare but deadly bacterial disease. It is believed to have spread from reindeer. Headline: ‘Break the Cross’: Islamic State Magazine Mocks Christianity, Claims Jesus Is ‘a Slave of Allah’
In the latest issue of its English-language magazine Dabiq, the Islamic State calls on Christians to abandon Christianity, arguing that Jesus himself was “a slave of Allah” who will “wage jihad” upon returning to earth. The fifteenth issue of the magazine, titled “Break the Cross,” is dedicated to convincing Christians that Jesus was a prophet of Allah, was never crucified, and that most of the New Testament is a perversion of Jesus’s story orchestrated by St. Paul, a “criminal” “treacherous Jew” who gave up massacring Christians in order to subvert the religion from the inside. Its articles strive to depict Christianity as a pagan religion based on a false Jesus, arguing that the only true Jesus is the prophet of Islam. The feigned compassion towards Christians in most of the volume stands in stark contrast to the actions of the Islamic State’s terrorists towards Christian communities, which includes rape, torture, crucifixion, and slavery. In the issue’s Foreward, the editors make clear the intent of the magazine: the issue will help “Crusaders” “read into why Muslims hate and fight them, why pagan Christians should break their crosses, why liberalist secularists should return to the fitrah (natural human disposition), and why skeptical atheists should recognize their Creator and submit to Him.”

Headline: Tropical Storm Earl expected to become hurricane by landfall
Tropical Storm Earl is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before it makes landfall, probably in Belize, forecasters said Wednesday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said that Earl was threatening to bring heavy rains, flooding and high winds to Mexico, Belize and Honduras, and was likely to blow past Honduras’ Roatan Island, a popular tourist destination, on Wednesday afternoon. All three of those countries issued tropical storm warnings for some areas, and a hurricane warning was issued for part of Mexico. On Sunday, Earl was a weaker tropical wave but knocked down power lines and started a fire that killed six passengers on a bus in the Dominican Republic. Early Wednesday, the storm was centered about 120 miles (105 kilometers) east of Roatan, with maximum sustained winds near 65 mph (100 kph) and was moving west near 14 mph (22 kph).

Headline: Volcanoes Blow in Mexico and Indonesia
Residents of Mexico City woke this morning to find ash coating cars and buildings after the Popocatepetl volcano belched out another toxic cloud. The volcano is considered one of the world’s most dangerous due to its proximity to the city with more than nine million inhabitants. Around 25 million people live within 62 miles of the crater of the 5,426-metre magma mount, who could also be affected. There are fears the peak is building towards a major disastrous eruption after activity increased over the past few years. Meanwhile, the Rinjani volcano, on Lombok Island, Indonesia, saw an explosive eruption at noon yesterday local time, sending a monster 10km-high ash plume into the sky. The eruption caused the closure of Lombok’s Praya Airport from 5pm and it was not expected to reopen until this morning.

The foreign minister of Yemen’s internationally recognized government on Monday gave Iran-backed Houthi militias and their allies a deadline till Aug. 7 to sign a UN peace proposal aimed at ending the country’s civil war. The Yemeni government has already accepted the UN peace proposal on Sunday after more than a year of armed conflict. “If they want peace, they have to sign the peace deal and we were patient,” Abdulmalik Al-Mekhlafi, who is also Yemen’s deputy prime minister, told reporters. Mekhlafi’s deadline also comes after the delegation of Yemen’s government decided to leave Kuwait on Monday after the Houthis side rejected the UN peace proposal. The foreign minister, meanwhile, said: “We’ll return at any moment, even an hour after our departure, if the other side agrees to sign this document which the [UN] envoy presented.” Mekhlafi also warned that the Yemeni people will challenge the Houthis who “are working against legitimacy” especially if they continued to be “hurdles” to peace in the country, which he warned to be on the verge of an economic collapse.

Headline: Egypt rankled by Hamas’s burgeoning ties to Islamic State
Cairo is fuming over increasing cooperation between the Palestinian terror group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, and Islamic State-affiliated forces in the neighboring Sinai Peninsula, The Times of Israel has learned, despite attempts in recent months to alleviate the tension between Egypt and Gaza. This highly worrying development for the Egyptians began a few months ago, when prominent members of Hamas’s military wing crossed over from Gaza into Sinai to help IS set up its military infrastructure there. Several of them took their families with them, and were involved in training IS activists in the art of planting IEDs and firing missiles at tanks. Several even joined the IS-affiliated Sinai Province group, including Muhammad Abu Shawish and Abed Al Wahad. Another senior activist in Hamas, Nasser Judah, also originally of Gaza, was killed fighting with IS in Sinai. In May, The Times of Israel identified two more activists who crossed into Sinai as Mohammed Sami and Mahmoud Zinet. Egyptian sources say that whenever Cairo brings up the issue with Hamas’s leadership, it receives the same evasive answer: the activists assisting IS are all former members of the Palestinian organization. But the dissembling doesn’t end there: Hamas military wing commanders in Rafah regularly host commanders of Sinai Province. One of the most prominent of these is Suleiman Al-Sawarka, whose Al-Sawarka tribe was among the founders of Ansar Bait al-Maqdis, which went on to pledge allegiance to IS and become Sinai Province.

Syria Headline: Russian helicopter shot down, killing five on board
A Russian military helicopter has been shot down in Syria killing all five on board – the deadliest single incident for Russia’s military since its air campaign began last September. The Mi-8 transporter was brought down by rebels, Russia says, in northern Idlib province. It was returning from delivering humanitarian aid to the besieged city of Aleppo, the defence ministry said. It is not clear which group brought the helicopter down. An alliance of forces, including hardline jihadist factions, is the dominant power in Idlib. Jabhat Fateh al-Sham – formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra – is among those active in the province, and so-called Islamic State has vowed to carry out jihad against Russian forces.

Syria Headline: Battle for Aleppo City heats up as the Syrian Army counters
Jaysh Al-Fateh (Army of Conquest) launched a large-scale offensive inside Aleppo City on Sunday morning that targeted the southern and northern districts under the government’s control. The purpose of this massive jihadist offensive was to lift the two-week long siege on the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo City; however, this has not been achieved as of yet. Jaysh Al-Fateh did make a considerable number of gains on Sunday, capturing the 1070 Al-Hamdaniyah Housing Project, Al-‘Amariyah District, and the Hikmah School after a violent battle with the Syrian Armed Forces. On Monday morning, the Syrian Armed Forces struck back against the jihadist rebels, firing a barrage of artillery shells and missiles towards their positions, while also attempting to recover the sites they lost yesterday. Meanwhile, at the Sabiqiyah District, the Syrian Armed Forces repelled a major attack by the jihadist rebels, killing a large number of enemy combatants before securing all flanks. The Russian Air Force is working overtime today, carrying out a significant number of airstrikes on the southern districts of Aleppo city.

Iraq Headline: Iraqi Army liberated last ISIS bastion in east Anbar
The Iraqi Army’s 10th Division, backed by the Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd Al-Sha’abi), liberated the last Islamic State (ISIS) bastion in the Al-Anbar Governorate on Sunday after a two-week long battle along the Euphrates River. Jazirat Al-Khalidiyah (Khalidiyah Island) was under the Islamic State’s control for over two years before the Iraqi Armed Forces finally pushed back the terrorist group to the Nineveh Governorate. The capture of Al-Khalidiyah on Sunday has opened the highway between the two strategic cities of Fallujah and Al-Ramadi, leaving the Islamic State with no presence between them.

Headline: Partial Assessment of Turkey’s Post-Coup Attempt Military Purge
Turkey’s defence minister said Monday that 311 soldiers including nine generals are still at large after this month’s failed coup. The Defence Minister Fikri Isik told CNN Turk television in an interview that the soldiers and generals were believed to still be in Turkey. On Monday, Turkish Special Forces also captured 11 fugitive commandos who were involved in a bid to seize President Tayyip Erdogan during the failed coup. Meanwhile, Isik said expulsions from the military are not entirely over and more personnel will be dismissed if necessary. Thousands of soldiers were dismissed following the failed coup on July 15-16. A faction of the military commandeered tanks, helicopters and fighter jets attempted to topple the government during the coup. Meanwhile, the defence ministry has also changed the jobs of 167 generals within the army, Reuters reported on Monday. The changes took place after Erdogan on Sunday issued a new presidential decree that introduced sweeping changes to Turkey’s military, bringing the armed forces further under civilian authority. The decree, the third issued under a three-month state of emergency declared after the coup, gives the president and prime minister the authority to issue direct orders to the commanders of the army, air force and navy.

Five police officers were killed and four others were wounded when a car bomb exploded as a police vehicle passed in southeastern Turkey on Monday in an attack that appeared to have been carried out by Kurdish militants, security sources said. Members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) carried out the attack in Bingol province, the sources said. Two of those injured were in serious condition.

A Taliban truck bomb blasted through a hotel for foreigners in Kabul early Monday, killing at least one policeman just days after the deadliest attack in the Afghan capital for 15 years. The powerful bombing, which rattled windows several kilometres (miles) away, paved the way for armed insurgents to enter the heavily guarded facility, close to Kabul’s international airport. The attack on Northgate, a compound for foreign contractors which was previously attacked in July 2013, underscores the worsening security situation as the Taliban ramp up their annual summer offensive. “A truck bomb packed with explosives struck the outer wall of the hotel,” Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi told AFP. “Afghan special forces subsequently entered the compound, killing two armed attackers. One policeman also lost his life and three others were wounded.” Rahimi did not reveal the exact number of attackers, saying clearance operations were still ongoing more than six hours after the attack started. Afghan commandos cordoned off all arterial roads leading to Northgate, with erratic grenade explosions and gunfire coming from the scene after daybreak.

Headline: Fighting continues in South Sudan
Fierce fighting shook the surroundings of the capital Juba over the weekend, killing people and driving terrified residents from their homes, local media reported. “Heavy fighting has been going on for the past three days,” rebel spokesman Peter Gadet told the Sudan Tribune website. Details about the weekend’s clashes are still not clear, and it was impossible to verify whether the fighting was started by rebels aligned to former Vice President Riek Machar or President Salva Kiir’s troops. The rebels were ready to attack the capital Juba if they were given orders to do so, Gadet added. South Sudan’s goverment however was undeterred by the threats. “Machar’s group has no capacity to attack Juba. If it was possible for them, they would have done so long time ago,” President Salva Kiir’s spokesman, Ateny Wek Ateny, told Uganda’s Daily Monitor newspaper.

The Brazilian government authorized sending 1,200 troops to the Rio Grande do Norte capital, Natal, to quell gang uprisings, now in their third day. Headline: 13 killed in twin car bombings near police headquarters in Somalia
At least 13 people have been killed, including seven attackers, in an assault on a Somali police compound in Mogadishu Sunday. Somali internal security Minister Abdirizak Omar Mohamed told VOA Somali that the target was the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters. “Two suicide bombers speed toward the main gate of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters, one exploded at the front gate and the other one in the middle of the road and then five heavily armed militants tried to enter the building, three of them were killed outside and two as they passed the main gate.” Omar said. Omar siad at least 10 people were wounded. Abdikamil Mo’alin Shukri, who is the spokesman of the internal security ministry of Somalia said the 13 killed included: seven attackers, a government soldier, and five civilians. Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

China’s state-run Global Times has published an editorial attacking Australia for supporting the recent international ruling on China’s activities in the South China Sea and called for strikes on any Australian ships which might undertake “freedom-of-navigation” activities in the region. A Zika outbreak in Miami has led to 10 more local cases spread by mosquitoes in the same neighborhood north of downtown and identified last week as having been the source of the nation’s first locally transmitted cases, Florida Gov. Headline: Earthquake hits northwestern Iran, one person killed
An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted north-western Iran on Monday. The Geophysics Institute Seismology center at Tehran University said the tremor was registered at 09:16 local time in Parsabad in the north-western Ardabil province. Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah Friday blasted Saudi Arabia for seeking to publicly normalize ties with Israel after years of a discrete relationship between the two. “Israel is no longer the enemy of Arabs, and Palestine became a minor cause. This is what the latest Arab statements indicate,” Nasrallah said, addressing his supporters via video link at a memorial to honor Hezbollah commander Ismail Zahri, known as Abu Khalil, in the southern district of Nabatieh. The Hezbollah chief accused Saudi Arabia of directly and openly contacting Israel, pointing to a debate between the kingdom’s Prince Turki al-Faisal and Israeli Maj. Gen. Yaakov Amidror in Washington in May, and another meeting between retired Saudi Gen. Anwar Eshki with Israeli officials in Jerusalem earlier this month. “When a known prince (Faisal) meets Israeli officials and an intelligence official follows suit and visits the occupied land …, it cannot happen without the Saudi kingdom’s approval.”

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s attempt to elicit Russian military cooperation in the fight against Islamic State in Syria suffered two potentially crippling blows on Thursday. First, the Syrian army said it had cut off all supply routes into the eastern part of the city of Aleppo – Syria’s most important opposition stronghold – and President Bashar al-Assad’s government asked residents to leave the city. That move, U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity said on Thursday, appeared to be an effort to pre-empt a U.S. demand that Russia and Syria reopen a major road into the divided northern city before talks could begin on creating a joint intelligence center to coordinate air attacks against Islamic State. Then al Qaeda’s Syrian branch announced on Thursday it was terminating its relationship with the global network created by Osama bin Laden and changing its name to remove what it called a pretext by the United States and other countries to attack Syrians.

Syria Headline: ISIS executes 24 after seizing Syrian village
ISIS has executed at least 24 civilians after seizing a village in northern Syria from a US-backed Kurdish-Arab alliance, a monitor said Friday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said ISIS executed 24 civilians “in the last 24 hours” after taking Buyir from the Syrian Democratic Forces. The village is located some 10 kilometers northwest of Manbij, a key waypoint between the Turkish border and the ISIS de facto capital of Raqqa city. ISIS seized control of several villages in the countryside northwest of Manbij since launching a “fierce assault” on Thursday, according to the Observatory, which relies on sources inside Syria for its information. The SDF, backed by air strikes from a US-led coalition, launched an offensive to retake Manbij from ISIS on May 31. The alliance managed to enter the town but have since faced fierce opposition from the militants who have fought back with suicide bombers and car bombs.

Headline: Five killed in two PKK attacks on Turkish security forces
Five members of the Turkish security forces were killed in attacks by the PKK Kurdish underground in the southeastern cities of Siirt and Hakkari late Wednesday night. In Siirt, a roadside bomb was detonated by remote control as a police convoy passed, while in Hakkari a car bomb blew up at an army checkpoint. About 20 members of the security forces were wounded in the two attacks.

Headline: Erdogan wants presidential control over army
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan wants the armed forces and national intelligence agency brought under the control of the presidency, a parliamentary official said on Thursday, part of a major overhaul of the military after a failed coup. Erdogan’s comments came after a five-hour meeting of Turkey’s Supreme Military Council (YAS) – chaired by Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and including the top brass – and the dishonorable discharge of nearly 1,700 military personnel over their alleged role in the abortive putsch on July 15-16. After the meeting, Erdogan approved the council’s decisions to keep armed forces chief Hulusi Akar and the army, navy and air force commanders in their posts, making few changes to the top brass, Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told reporters.

Headline: At least 5 US troops wounded in Afghanistan fighting Islamic State
Five U.S. special operations troops were wounded in combat with Islamic State fighters in eastern Afghanistan, the senior U.S. commander in the country said Thursday. It appeared to be the first reported instance of U.S. troops being wounded in fighting against the Islamic State in Afghanistan. The Afghan offensive began on Saturday, hours after the IS group claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack in the capital Kabul that killed around 80 people. Gen. John Nicholson, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said the five wounded Americans were hit by small arms fire or shrapnel during a combat operation conducted with Afghan special operations forces to clear areas once controlled by the Islamic State in Nangarhar. He did not say exactly when the injuries happened. The Pentagon later issued what it called a clarification, saying one of the five was wounded on Sunday and the other four on Monday.

Headline: Libya forces ‘retake’ Benghazi district from jihadists
Libyan forces loyal to a controversial general have wrestled back control of a Benghazi neighborhood from jihadists, following months of fighting to drive the Islamists from the country’s second city.
General Khalifa Haftar’s troops took the Al-Gwarcha district of Benghazi, which has been marred by unrest since his fighters launched a campaign to drive extremists out of the city earlier this year.
“We dealt them a firm blow, it’s a major victory,” Khalifa Al-Obeidi, head of press for Haftar’s Libyan National Army, told AFP Thursday. “We are presently pursuing terrorists who are entrenched one kilometer east.” Six of Haftar’s fighters died in clashes this week in Al-Gwarcha district, including four special forces killed by a land mine explosion. Haftar’s forces have regained several districts of Benghazi in recent months but have yet to retake the whole city.

Headline: Armenia: Officers Wound 3 More Gunmen Holding Police Station
Three more of the gunmen who have been barricaded inside a police station in the Armenian capital for nearly two weeks were wounded Friday in exchanges of gunfire with police, police said. The gunmen were the first to open fire, police spokesman Ashot Agaronyan said on Facebook. A high-ranking police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information, said the gunmen were hit in the legs by snipers after emerging from the station. A group of 29 gunmen seized the police post in Yerevan on July 17, killing one officer and wounding several others in the attack, to demand freedom for a jailed opposition figure. Besides the three gunmen wounded Friday, five others were wounded in previous exchanges of fire with police. Six were hospitalized and two remained inside the police station, where they were receiving treatment from three members of an ambulance crew who were being held hostage. The standoff has set off a series of anti-government demonstrations, held nearly daily in the evening. More than 4,000 protesters gathered in a central square on Friday evening.

Headline: Gay civil union law comes into effect in Italy
Italy’s much-disputed law allowing gay civil unions took effect Friday after it was published in an official journal, as couples start applying for legal recognition of their same-sex relationships, the Local wrote. In Milan an official went Wednesday to an intensive care unit to perform the civil union ceremony of a terminally ill 53-year-old teacher named Margherita and her partner of 28 years. Theirs will be the first registered in Milan in about 10 days’ time, the city told the media. Throughout Italy, town halls have reported that requests for gay unions have started coming in. The Italian parliament passed the landmark legislation in May, overruling opposition from the country’s powerful Catholic Church. It introduces civil unions for the first time but denies same sex couples equal adoption rights to their heterosexual counterparts.
