Headline:      Netanyahu tells Amona residents Obama is a threat to communities

Prime Minister Netanyahu told Amona residents in informal discussions that President Obama intends to harm Judean and Samarian communities before he leaves the White House, according to a Channel 2 report tonight. According to the report Netanyahu said there is a real threat of unilateral steps being taken by the president against the Judean and Samarian communities during the short period left before he leaves the White House. Netanyahu’s warnings come despite the fact that at present there is no indication yet of such a move on Obama’s part and he even briefed reporters recently saying that he had no political plan which he intends to promote before the end of his presidency. Another issue is at present in contention between Israel and the US. After Israel’s UN ambassador Danny Danon attacked the UN Wednesday for funding the B’Tselem organization and providing it with a platform to attack Israel, American representative David Pressman defended the organization. Pressman claimed that the extreme left-wing organizations who appeared at the Security Council’s unofficial meeting expressed their ‘professional viewpoint’ and added that “Their words must be taken as the truth, as we know from many other unaffiliated organizations which describe difficult situations occurring around the world. It’s important to create an atmosphere in which any complaint can reach the ears of the world.”

Headline:     Assad: Israel Backs ISIS, Terrorism In Syria To Keep Golan Heights, Syrian President Claims

Israel’s government functions as a terrorist group akin to Al Qaeda or the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, Syrian President Bashar Assad claimed Friday in an interview with Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda. Israel is working to “undermine” Syria by supporting “terrorism,” such as the militant group also known as ISIS, he added, according to media reports Tuesday. “There’s no contradiction between Israel and any organization like al-Nusra or ISIS or any Al-Qaida-linked organization,” said Assad of Israel and rebel groups fighting his regime in Syria. “Anyone, any terrorist who holds a machine gun and started killing and destroying in Syria was supported by Israel, either indirectly through the logistical support on the frontier, or sometimes by direct intervention by Israel against Syria in different areas in Syria.” Assad explained his views on Israel’s motives: “Israel is our enemy, because they occupy our lands, and they look at Syria as [an] enemy of course, and for them they think if they undermine the position of Syria and make it weaker as a whole, as [a] society, as [an] army, as [a] state, that will prevent Israel from moving toward the peace, and the price for peace is to give back the Golan Heights to Syria. So, for them, Syria will be busy with another issue now.”

Headline:    Islam originally recognized Jews as owners of Israel

In the wake of the latest UNESCO decision, Prof. Nissim Dana of the Middle Eastern Affairs Department at Ariel University discussed in an Arutz Sheva interview the early Islamic attitude towards the connection between Jerusalem and Israel and Judaism. Dana stated that he had investigated the early Islamic sources and had even published a book on the subject entitled To Whom Does This Land Belong?: New Insights into the Koran, revealing that Islam absolutely does not have a claim on the Land of Israel – even by its own standards – as it recognizes the Jews as the owners of this country and of Jerusalem. Nowadays, however, he explained, Muslims seem to be following the maxim ‘Don’t confuse us with the facts’ and it is impossible to change beliefs which they have assimilated over the last few generations even by presenting them with facts from their own sources. Dana said that “Islam was born in the seventh century C.E. and the Jewish Temple existed many years before that so that it is impossible to mistake those historical facts. Hundreds of years before Islam there was a connection between Jews and Jerusalem.” If Islam is aware of historical events preceding it, how can it change such things as the binding of Isaac to the ‘binding of Ishmael’ and create an entire festival around it?

It was released for publication Wednesday night that 5 people were arrested after a joint investigation by the Shin Bet, the IDF, and the police, in connection with a terror attack in which IDF soldiers were fired upon by multiple assailants near the village of Ni’ilin. There were no Israeli casualties from the attack, which took place on the eve of Yom Kippur . The terrorists fled after opening fire on the soldiers. That night forces from the Ephraim Brigade, in cooperation with the Shin Bet and the elite Duvdevan unit that operates in Judea and Samaria, went into the village and arrested the suspects.

Headline:     Jordan welcomes again UNESCO resolution on Jerusalem holy sites

Headline: Jordan King says Christian Arabs play key role in defending holy sites in Jerusalem

Jordan on Tuesday renewed its stand celebrating a ‘victory’ in UNESCO, which officially adopted an Arab-sponsored resolution condemning Israel’s actions at holy sites in East Jerusalem, deepening anger in Israel. The UNESCO resolution on “Occupied Palestine” was endorsed Tuesday by the agency’s executive board at its headquarters in Paris, after being approved at the committee stage last week, when Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani described the resolution on Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif in East Jerusalem as a political and legal victory against the Israeli occupation. On Tuesday, he added that the final “historic” decision “underlines the international community’s awareness of the sensitivity of this serious issue,” adding that the Israeli violations to the sanctity of Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif have “created an environment that supports radicalism and aggression”. Momani told The Jordan Times earlier this week that Jordan is proud to be the Muslim and Arab country that spearheads efforts to protect the holy shrines in Jerusalem, urging the international community to support the enforcement of international law and to bring an end to Israeli occupation.

The Lebanese Army issued a powerful response to the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) militants entrenched near the Syrian border on Monday. According to a Lebanese Army communique, their forces carried out a fierce assault against the Islamic State terrorists at Jaroud Qa’a, Jaroud ‘Arsal, and Ras Ba’albak, inflicting heavy damage to the latter’s defenses. The Lebanese Army conducted this assault on Monday after a group of Islamic State terrorists ambushed Corporal Khaled ‘Ezzeddine outside of his home in ‘Arsal. The Islamic State terrorists that conducted this attack against Cpl. Ezzeddine are still at-large and wanted by the Lebanese authorities.

The Egyptian air force launched strikes in the Sinai Peninsula killing over 100 Islamic State (ISIS) fighters on Oct. 15 in response to an ISIS terror attack a day earlier, the Egyptian military reported. Egypt led the operation targeting known ISIS hideouts including their outposts and weapons facilities throughout the Sinai. Twelve members of Egypt’s military were killed and six others wounded in a ISIS terror attack on Oct. 14 where the group used assault rifles and rockets. Egyptian forces killed 15 terrorists during the clashes that occurred at a security checkpoint in North Sinai. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi wrote on his Facebook page on Oct. 14 that “the blood of the nation of Egypt was spilled in the sands of Sinai only increases the desire and determination to complete the campaign (against the terrorists).”

The Egyptian Air Force has reportedly withdrawn from the Saudi-led Coalition of countries attacking Yemen after a 12 month-long operation. According to locals in Cairo, this move by the Egyptian government comes just hours after the Egyptian Intelligence Chief met with his Syrian counterpart. No formal announcement has been issued by the Egyptian government to corroborate these reports; however, if true, Saudi Arabia will lose a key ally in this bombing campaign against the Yemeni people.

Belgium summoned the Russian ambassador to Brussels on Wednesday in a spat over Moscow’s claim that Belgian jets killed six civilians near Syria’s Aleppo. The diplomatic summons was issued after Russia said two Belgian F-16s from the US-led coalition had been identified in the region where the deadly air strike took place Tuesday. “We are making contact with the Russian ambassador with the aim of summoning him today,” Belgian foreign ministry spokesman Didier Vanderhasselt told AFP. “We are also making contact at the level of the ministry of defense to pass on the message that Belgium has no responsibility for these air strikes… We are also unhappy that this information was not verified before being made public.” Russia’s defense ministry said two of Belgium’s F-16s fighting Daesh terrorists in Syria had been identified in the area where the deadly strike took place. “Six people were killed and four people injured to various degrees as a result of bombing that destroyed two homes” in the village of Hassajik in the Aleppo region, it said in a statement.

Headline:   ISIS tightens security in Raqqa as more jihadists arrive from Iraq

Less than a day after its launch, the big Mosul offensive prepared for more than a year by the US, the Iraqi army, Kurdish forces and others, ground to a halt Tuesday Oct. 17, debkafile’s military sources report – although none of the parties admitted as much.  Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi said his troops were busy opening up corridors for some million civilians to escape, while US sources suggested that the Islamic State would use primitive chemical weapons against the advancing Iraqi and Kurdish forces. Both had the ring of cover stories to account for the spearhead forces, the Iraq army’s 9th Armored Division and the Federal Police special anti-terror units, being thrown back Tuesday on their way to Mosul from the east and the south, while still 10-15km short of the city. They sustained heavy losses in lives and hardware. The 9th Division and its newly-supplied heavy US Abrahams tanks were stopped at al-Hamdaniyah outside Mosul and retreated, recalling a previous defeat at ISIS hands in June 2014, when troops of the same division fled under Islamist attack, leaving their tanks behind. The Iraqi anti-terror force withdrew from the village of al-Houd outside Mosul, a move which left the Kurdish Peshmerga no option but to stop its sweep of the villages around the city or expose their flanks to ISIS suicide and car bomb assaults. Tuesday night, both Iraqi and Kurdish commanders announced a pause in their advance and said they would meet Wednesday to decide how to proceed.

Following a rebel request for Kurdish forces to conduct a complete withdrawal from Tall Rifaat yesterday, clashes have now erupted between the Kurdish YPG and Free Syrian Army (FSA) factions in the northern countryside of Aleppo. Heavy skirmishes and artillery bombardment erupted near and around the Shabha Reservoir on Wednesday despite neither directly conceding villages to the other. Clashes were also observed yesterday on the eastern outskirts of Harbul and Shaykh Isa. Both the FSA and YPG have captured considerable chunks of ISIS’ northern Aleppo territory in 2016. Turkish police shot dead a suspected ISIS militant overnight who was believed to be planning a suicide bomb attack in the capital Ankara, the city’s governor said Wednesday. It was the latest in a series of counter-terrorist police operations coinciding with a Turkey-backed rebel operation in Syria to drive the extremists away from its southern border. Turkish security forces have meanwhile stepped up action against Kurdish militants, killing 14 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters in eastern Turkey in recent days, the interior minister said. Police tracked ISIS suspect to the ninth floor of a building on Ankara’s outskirts, where he was killed in a gunfight around 3 a.m. after opening fire in response to a call to surrender, the state-run Anadolu Agency said. “The terrorist is judged to have been planning to carry out a suicide bomb attack and carried out reconnaissance around the old parliament building and Anitkabir,” Governor Ercan Topaca wrote on Twitter, referring to the mausoleum of modern Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Iran’s Artesh Air Force kicked off a three-day series of drills aimed at displaying the Islamic Republic’s air might, according to Iranian military officials who told the country’s state-run press that the drills are in preparations for upcoming war. “The goal of holding this drill is the creation of readiness so as to be able to combat any threat, and should a war occur, the Air Force will be the first force to enter the battlefield,” Iranian Air Force Gen. Masoud Rouzkhosh was quoted as saying, according to independent translations of the original Farsi provided to the Washington Free Beacon. “The newest armaments of the Air Force like precision-guided bombs and laser-guided missiles will be used in this year’s drill.”

Headline: Exiled South Sudan Rebel Leader Vows Return

South Sudan’s ousted Vice President Riek Machar outlined his plan to return from exile and revive a shattered peace plan, warning that failure to include him in the country’s political setup risks an outbreak of genocide. Mr. Machar, a rebel leader, said he plans to meet with the leaders of countries neighboring South Sudan to discuss how to resuscitate the peace accord he reached with his rival President Salva Kiir last year. He said he also expects to return to South Sudan before the end of the year. Without immediate steps to restore peace to South Sudan, Mr. Machar warned, Mr. Kiir’s government could carry out genocide against his Nuer tribe, as well as other South Sudanese tribes such as the Equatorians. The government has targeted civilians by tribe since 2013, with attacks on the Nuer community, Mr. Machar said. “This time the people in Equatoria are bearing the brunt. I wouldn’t rule it [genocide] out,” he told The Wall Street Journal in an interview in Pretoria.

Britain has sent 40 military personnel to Tunisia to provide training aimed at helping the North African country prevent the spread of Islamic State fighters from neighboring Libya, the British defense minister said on Saturday. The training will focus on operational planning, intelligence, surveillance and mobile patrolling and is the third mission of its kind by British troops in Tunisia since 30 British holidaymakers were killed in a beach attack there. The massacre in June last year at a hotel in Sousse on the Mediterranean coast was the biggest loss of British lives in such an incident since the July 2005 bombings in London. “We are determined to support our Tunisian allies to defend against Daesh (Islamic State) terrorists who slaughtered innocent Britons on a beach there last year,” Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said in a statement. “Our training will help Tunisian forces strengthen their border security and stop the spread of Daesh along the coast.”

Headline:    Algeria Concerned over Mounting Shi’ite Influence on Its Territories

Algerians have increasing concerns over the spread of Shi’ite influence in their country, as an extensive wave of conversion into Shi’ism is raging across mosques in Algeria. In this context, the president of the High Islamic Council – the highest religious authority in the country – warned against attempts to destabilize the unity of the Algerian society. In an interview with Al-Khabar local Algerian newspaper on Tuesday, Bou Abdullah Ghulamallah said “thousands of imported books carry dangerous thoughts that are aimed at convincing the Algerian people that their Islamic religion is wrong”. “We don’t want the Algerians to be influenced by such thoughts,” he added. In earlier remarks, Algerian Minister of Religious Affairs Mohammed Issa said that his country has been recently targeted by sectarian indoctrination far from the cultural and religious values which were inherited from Algerian Salaf (ancestors). The minister made a reference to the wave of conversion into Shi’ism raging across the country. The minister further warned of radical extremism conveyed by those sects. The upsurge of conversion aims at diverting the people of Algeria from their main track and creating a sectarian-spurred division amid the community. On the other hand, the Islam adopted in Algeria is a moderate one and it coexists with other sects and religions, the minister said.

Headline:   UN peacekeeping chief to visit disputed Western Sahara

The U.N. peacekeeping chief said Tuesday he is heading to the disputed Western Sahara later this week to visit U.N. troops for the first time since Morocco expelled more than 70 U.N. civilian staffers in March to protest comments by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Herve Ladsous told a group of reporters after briefing the Security Council that he will visit Layoune, the largest city in Western Sahara, as well as camps for Sahrawi refugees in neighboring Tindouf, Algeria, and the Moroccan capital, Rabat. He will be the highest-ranking U.N. official to visit the region since early March when Ban used the word “occupation” in talking about Morocco’s involvement in Western Sahara during a visit to a refugee camp in Tindouf. That led to demonstrations against Ban in Morocco and the government’s decision to expel U.N. civilian workers. Morocco annexed Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, in 1975 and fought a local independence movement called the Polisario Front. The U.N. brokered a ceasefire in 1991 and established a peacekeeping mission known as MINURSO to monitor it and help prepare a referendum on the territory’s future, which has never taken place. Morocco considers the mineral-rich region its “southern provinces” and has proposed wide-ranging autonomy, but the Polisario Front insists on self-determination through a referendum for the local population.

Headline:   Russian-Turkish Rapprochement ‘Not Risky For Armenia’

An ongoing thaw in Russia’s relations with Turkey is not fraught with any geopolitical dangers for Armenia, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin insisted on Friday. Russian-Turkish relations deteriorated sharply following the downing of a Russian fighter jet on the Syrian border by Turkish forces in November 2015. Moscow imposed trade and travel sanctions against Turkey and Russian in retaliation. The two nations began rapidly mending ties following a recent letter of regret from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the death of the Russian plane’s pilot. Putin highlighted the normalization process when he visited Istanbul and met with Erdogan earlier this week. The two leaders presided over the signing of an agreement to build a gas pipeline from Russia to Europe. The expensive project was suspended during the Russian-Turkish row. The renewed Russian-Turkish rapprochement has raised fears among some Armenian pundits and politicians that Russia might cut more deals with Turkey and even Azerbaijan at the expense of Armenia’s interests.

Headline: American Marines to be sent ‘to Russia doorstep’

Headline: Russia to respond to any new US sanctions with ‘painful’ measures – deputy FM

The Marine Corps have revealed plans to station a detachment of the hard-nosed troopers a stone’s throw from the Motherland. Soldiers and gear are primed to be shipped to military bases in Russia’s neighbour Norway as tensions between the two superpowers are feared to be verging on total conflict. Marines took part in war games in the Scandinavian nation earlier this year as they drilled winter warfare skills in exercises along the Russian border. Major General Niel E. Nelson, commander of US Marine Corps Forces Europe, said: “We enjoy a very close relationship with the Norwegian Armed Forces and a limited rotational presence in Norway would certainly enhance this relationship and our ability to operate together. “If approved by the Norwegian government, a Marine Corps presence in Norway will increase NATO’s ability to rapidly aggregate and employ forces in northern Europe.” Relations between Russia and the US have nosedived to levels “more dangerous” than the Cold War as there are fears the civil war in Syria could erupt into “global war”.

Headline: US vows all-out defense against ‘grave’ North Korean threat

The United States and South Korea agreed on Wednesday to step up military and diplomatic efforts to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, saying they posed a “grave” security threat following repeated tests this year. After talks in Washington between their foreign and defense ministers, the countries said they had agreed to set up a high-level Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group to leverage “the full breadth of national power – including diplomacy, information, military coordination, and economic elements” in the face of the North Korean threat.

Yemeni activists are calling for protests in the Yemeni capital Sanaa to demonstrate against the Houthi militias for rejecting to pay the salaries of state employees, Al Arabiya News Channel reported on Wednesday. Activists had made similar calls in the past to protest against Houthi militias in Sanaa and against the deteriorating living conditions. The militias have refused to pay the employees’ salaries at a time when Sanaa citizens lives under harsh conditions under militant forces, who on almost a daily basis, carry out abduction operations against civilians. “Most Yemenis want to put an end to the Houthi-Saleh coup,” Yemen expert and analyst Ibraham al-Qatabi told Al Arabiya English, referring to the deposed president Ali Abdullah Saleh, allied with the Houthi militias. “The resentment against Saleh and Houthis continues to grow everyday even within their hardcore supporters.” “No Yemeni citizen wants to be ruled by a militia and warlords. Everyone knows Saleh and Houthis are not going to last and that’s what the current situation, indicators and history of Yemen tell us,” Qatabi said.

Headline: Study: 1 in 2 American Adults Already In Facial Recognition Network

Half of all American adults are already in some sort of facial recognition network accessible to law enforcement, according to a comprehensive new study. Conducted over a year and relying in part on Freedom of Information and public record requests to 106 law enforcement agencies, the study, conducted by Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy and Technology, found American police use of facial recognition technology is a scattered, hodgepodge network of laws and regulations. “Looking at the sum total of what we found, there have been no laws that comprehensively regulate face recognition technology, and there’s really no case law either,” Clare Garvie, an associate at the CPT, told Vocativ. “So we find ourselves having to rely on the agencies that are using that technology to rein it in. But what we found is that not every system — by a long shot — has a use policy.” That so many American adults are in at least one facial recognition database is largely due to the fact that at least 26 states, and likely more, share their Department of Motor Vehicles databases with the FBI, state police, or other law enforcement agencies, the study found. Compounded with that, police often have access to mugshot databases. Garvie’s study found that most law enforcement agencies don’t purge such records, even if the arrested suspect is found not guilty, unless a court orders it. The sole known exception is the Michigan State Police, which does expunge photos after a set amount of time.

Headline:      Saudis, China Dump Treasuries; Foreign Central Banks Liquidate A Record $346 Billion In US Paper

One month ago, when we last looked at the Fed’s update of Treasuries held in custody, we noted something troubling: the number dropped sharply, declining by over $27.5 billion in one week, the biggest weekly drop since January 2015, pushing the total amount of custodial paper to $2.83 trillion, the lowest since 2012. One month later, we refresh this chart and find that in the latest weekly update, foreign central banks continued their relentless liquidation of US paper held in the Fed’s custody account, which tumbled by another $22.3 billion in the past week, pushing the total amount of custodial paper to $2.805 trillion, another fresh post-2012 low. Then today, in addition to the Fed’s custody data, we also got the latest monthly Treasury International Capital data, which showed that the troubling trend presented last one month ago, has accelerated. Recall that a month ago,  we reported that in the latest 12 months we have observed a not so stealthy, in fact quite massive $343 billion in Treasury selling by foreign central banks in the period July 2015- July 2016, something truly unprecedented in size and scope. Fast forward to today when in the latest monthly update, that of July, we find that what until a month ago was “merely” a record $343 billion in offshore central bank sales in the LTM period ending July 30, one month later this number has risen to a new all time high $346.4 billion, or well over a third of a trillion in Treasuries sold in the past 12 months.

Iceland would welcome Britain, its biggest trading partner, back into the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Icelandic Foreign Minister Lilja Alfredsdottir said on Wednesday in London. “The EFTA countries might make an agreement with the UK,” she said. “We are chairing the EFTA right now and I put it as a priority to analyse the possibilities that EFTA had on this front.” Alfredsdottir emphasised the importance of Iceland’s trade ties with Britain. “The UK is our largest trading partner – 11 percent of our exports and imports go to this market,” she said at a talk at the London School of Economics when asked about British-Icelandic relations after Britain’s vote to leave the European Union. She said an agreement with EFTA was one of three possibilities for Iceland-British relations after Brexit. The other two were a bilateral agreement with Britain, and an agreement with European Economic Area (EEA) countries. Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland make up the EFTA trade organisation and free trade area which is also part of the European single market and the EEA. Britain was a co-founder of EFTA in 1960 and left in 1972 to join what was then the European Economic Community.

Headline:   Malnutrition Spikes in North Cameroon Amid Boko Haram Conflict

Aid agencies are sounding the alarm about severe food insecurity throughout northern Cameroon as a result of the Boko Haram conflict. This month, 70 children suffering from malnutrition have needed medical attention at the Minawao refugee camp. However, says nurse Irene Mbarga, the hospital has limited resources to treat them. The families are not able to provide enough food, she says, and malnutrition is making other health conditions worse. Mbarga told VOA that about three quarters of the cases the hospital sees are related to malnutrition. When the hospital is running short on supplies, she says, the staff can only provide first aid.

Acute respiratory infections are circulating in flood-hit regions of North Korea. The World Health Organization said in a recently issued report on the North Korea floods that the number of patients suffering from the diseases continued to escalate in early October, Voice of America reported. The region most affected is North Hamgyong Province in the country’s northeast. Acute respiratory infections began spreading in early September after massive flooding occurred from Aug. 29 to Sept. 2, around the same time the number of children in North Korea suffering from diarrheal diseases quadrupled. Severe acute malnutrition is also on the rise for children under age 5, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Headline:   Chicago Records Largest Mass Shooting Since 2014 As Violent Crime Spikes Again

Headline:   War on Cops Surges in California

Violence in Chicago spiked over the weekend as, according to the Chicago Tribune, the city recorded its largest mass shooting since 2014.  In total, 8 people were murdered in just this past weekend and another 40 were wounded.  In total, 605 people have been murdered in Chicago so far in 2016, a staggering 45% increase versus last year, while 3,475 people have been shot versus only 2,441 a year ago. A single attack Friday night in East Garfield Park killed one man and left six others wounded, according to police. The people were standing together in the 3300 block of West Maypole Street when someone opened fire from a black vehicle, police said. An attack of that scale has not occurred in Chicago since 2014, when seven people — including several young teens — were shot in Lawndale. The Maypole shooting capped off an exceptionally deadly night on the West Side. Less than a half-hour before, two men were fatally shot in a South Austin drive-by, police said. About an hour before that, an 18-year-old man was killed in West Garfield Park. But shootings occurred in nearly every corner of Chicago over the weekend, from a fatal attack in West Rogers Park to a shooting in Morgan Park near the southern border. A man was shot Sunday afternoon near the 95th Street Red Line CTA station, where he ran after being hit in the shoulder. Overall, six people were killed and 14 were wounded from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning; from Saturday morning to Sunday morning, one person was killed and 17 were wounded; and from Sunday to just past midnight Monday, one person was killed and at least nine others were wounded. Many people have attributed the rise in Chicago violence to the co-called “Ferguson Effect” in which criminals lash out against what they view as a “de-legitamized” police force while the police retreat from actually enforcing the law out of fear of inciting the next major riot.

Headline: After-School Satan Club Spreads…

The national movement is attempting to establish a dozen After School Satan Clubs across the country. Local chapters have applied for space at public grade schools in cities including Atlanta, Detroit, Washington, Portland, Ore., Tacoma, Wash., Salt Lake City, Tucson, and Los Angeles. The clubs are all seeking school district approval, with the Atlanta-area club saying it hopes to hold its first meeting by Halloween. The Los Angeles Unified School District appears to be the only school district to outright reject the club. In response to a Los Angeles Times inquiry Monday, the district issued a statement stating the club proposed for Chase Elementary School in Panorama City “does not meet the minimum requirement of having the school’s approval and, therefore, will not be offered at the school.” That rejection could lead to a legal challenge. The Christians may have the force of Heaven behind them, but the Satanists have the U.S. Supreme Court.

Headline: Ice world with insane 20,000-year orbit discovered in solar system

An icy planet with a staggering 20,000-year orbit has been discovered passing through our solar system, leading to the re-emergence of theories touting the existence of the fabled and mystical Planet 9. No object has ever been seen doing this. L91, as the icy rock is called, is an enigma defying previously established gravitational patterns, and its discovery has added to mounting evidence that there are gravitational disruptions going on beyond what we can see, according to scientists working on the Outer Solar System Origins Survey. At present, scientists still can’t determine L91’s size, and have conflicting views on what is disrupting its orbit. Although L91 orbits our solar system’s sun, it never comes closer than 50 astronomical units, and at its farthest extreme it is a whopping  1,430AU (100 billion miles) away. Each AU equals the distance between the Sun and Earth.

Headline:   Super Typhoon Haima hits Philippines as equivalent of Category 4 hurrricane

Super Typhoon Haima hit the northeast Philippines on Wednesday, bringing gusts of nearly 200 mph — days after Typhoon Sarika killed three people in the Pacific island nation. The storm hit land near Peñablanca late Wednesday as the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane, forecasters said, and was expected to pass over or near Ilocos Norte and Apayao. Haima has brought maximum sustained winds of about 140 mph with gusts of 195 mph to the islands. The most severe tropical cyclone warning has been issued for the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela, Kalinga and Apayao in the Luzon island. Philippine authorities have warned against sea travel, adding that Haima’s winds could cause “very heavy damage” to structures and could lead to the “complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings.” Haima is forecast to head toward China’s coast after passing through the Philippines.

Headline:     UN chief rejects UNESCO resolution on Temple Mount

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon distanced himself on Sunday from a recent UNESCO resolution which failed to acknowledge the ties between the Jewish people and the Temple Mount. Israel suspended its cooperation with the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), claiming the draft resolution it adopted on Thursday denies the deep, historic Jewish connection to the holy sites in Jerusalem. The resolution refers to the holiest site in Judaism—the Temple Mount—only by its Muslim name—Al-Haram Al Sharif.   “The Secretary-General reaffirms the importance of the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls for the three monotheistic religions and stresses the importance of the religious and historical link of the Jewish, Muslim and Christian peoples to the holy site,” said a statement read by the UN Spokesperson on behalf of Ban.

Egypt’s army said three of its personnel were killed and two wounded during air and ground operations against militants in the restive North Sinai region on Sunday. Military air forces pounded 16 militant hideouts while ground and special troops simultaneously raided a number of other targets, killing 18 militants, military spokesman Brigadier General Mohamed Samir said in a statement. Three military personnel were killed and two others wounded in the Sunday dawn fighting, he added. The raids came two days after militants attacked an army checkpoint in the Bir Al-Abd area west of El-Arish, the provincial capital of North Sinai, killing 12 soldiers and wounding at least six more. The attack was claimed by the Egyptian affiliate of the Islamic State group. The army said it killed 15 militant fighters in response when Egyptian jets bombed Islamist militant targets for three hours on Saturday.

Headline:   Russian & Syrian military to organize 8-hour ‘humanitarian pause’ in Aleppo on Oct. 20

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), backed by Hezbollah, continued their large-scale assault in southern Aleppo on Monday, targeting several districts and hilltops under the control of both Jaysh Al-Fateh and Fatah Halab. The southern Aleppo assault began last night, when the 800th Regiment of the Republican Guard established full control over Tal SyriaTel and the Air Defense Base near the strategic town of Khan Touman. Following the capture of these southern Aleppo sites, a large Hezbollah force stormed the southern sector of the 1070 Al-Hamdaniyah Housing Project, seizing almost 90 percent of this district before dawn on Monday. Despite initially overrunning Jaysh Al-Fateh’s positions at the 1070 Housing Project, Hezbollah was forced to withdraw from a number of buildings inside this district; this was due to the jihadist rebels maintaining control over the Hikmah School. Meanwhile, at Salahiddeen, the Syrian Armed Forces managed to capture several buildings inside the Sheikh ‘Ali area, giving the latter a large presence inside this strategic district in southern Aleppo. Intense clashes are still ongoing at several axes, as the Syrian Armed Forces and Hezbollah press the jihadist rebel defenses around southern Aleppo.

Headline:       Attacks including suicide bombing by IS kill 46 in Iraq

Attacks killed at least 46 people in Iraq on Saturday, including a suicide bombing claimed by the Islamic State group that was the deadliest to hit Baghdad in months. A suicide bomber targeted a funeral tent where mourners were gathered to pay their respects in the Shiite-majority Shaab area of north Baghdad, killing at least 34 people and wounding least 36, officials said. IS issued an online statement claiming the attack, saying it was carried out by a man who detonated an explosive vest. A witness said the bomber entered the funeral tent and blew himself up as lunch was being served. “I saw with my eyes 20 martyrs on the ground,” the witness said. Blood stained the ground at the scene of the attack, which was littered with the remains of plastics chairs mourners had been seated on. IS, a Sunni extremist group, considers Shiites to be heretics, and frequently carries out suicide bombings and other attacks against them in Baghdad and elsewhere in the country. Today’s bombing is the deadliest to hit the Iraqi capital since early July, when a suicide bombing in central Baghdad sparked infernos in a crowded shopping area, killing more than 300 people.

Iraqi and regional actors are preparing to assist with or spoil the Iraqi Security Forces’ (ISF) operation to retake Mosul and its environs from ISIS. Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced the start of operations to retake the city on October 17. The ISF began shelling ISIS-held villages south of Mosul, Iraqi Army armored units and Federal Police advanced towards Mosul near Gwer, southeast of Mosul, and Peshmerga units began advancing towards Mosul from Khazar, east of Mosul. The ISF’s operation against ISIS will require security forces to isolate Mosul before it can begin a block-by-block clearing operation in the city itself. The ISF recaptured Shirqat, the last major ISIS-held city on the Mosul-Baghdad highway, on September 22, thereby setting the operational conditions to launch operations for Mosul. The ISF will need to continue its line of effort up the highway while also encircling the city from the north and northeast. ISIS will seek to conduct attrition warfare against the ISF before it arrives in Mosul, leveraging its remaining lines of communication in Anbar, Ninewa, and Syria to shift people and supplies. ISIS will also use the sparsely populated areas on both the eastern and western sides of the Tigris River to launch attacks against recaptured areas and the ISF.

Headline:       Three killed in suicide attack in Turkey’s Gaziantep

A suspected Islamic State (ISIS) suicide bomber blew himself up during an anti-terror raid in the Turkish city of Gaziantep on Sunday, killing three police officers, officials said. A few hours later, a second suicide bomber — identified as the chief of ISIS group “bomb cells” in the city near the Syrian border — detonated his explosives, killing himself but without causing any further fatalities, according to AFP. The blasts took place shortly after Turkish-backed rebels captured the northern Syrian town of Dabiq from ISIS, dealing a major symbolic blow to the jihadists. In the first attack in Gaziantep, the bomber set off his explosives to avoid being captured by Turkish police, local governor Ali Yerlikaya said in televised comments. Turkish media had initially spoken of more than one attacker but the governor and the local prosecutor’s office said the body of just one bomber was found at the scene. The governor said five police and four Syrians were also injured. Acting on a tip-off, special police used armored vehicles to block the road where the suspected jihadists were holed up in a house, the state-run news agency Anadolu reported. Witnesses told private NTV television they heard sound of gunfire and clashes in the area, which is mostly populated by university students. Video footage released by the private Dogan news agency showed several suspects with their hands tied behind their backs as they were taken to a police car. Yerlikaya said the raid took place after Turkish authorities gathered intelligence about a possible suicide bomb attack by a suspected ISIS sleeper cell in Gaziantep against an Alevi cultural association.

Headline:       Latest Taliban offensives kill dozens, displace thousands in Afghanistan

The Taliban’s latest offensives in the north and south of Afghanistan have killed dozens of people and displaced tens of thousands, officials said Monday. Earlier this month the militants launched a full-fledged attack on Kunduz, briefly entering the northern city and triggering fierce fighting with Afghan forces that forced thousands of residents to flee. Last week the militants also launched a new attack on Lashkar Gah, the besieged capital of volatile Helmand province in the south. They killed dozens of security forces personnel before being pushed back when government reinforcements arrived. “Due to hostilities in Kunduz and intensified fighting across the south we have seen a jump of 37,000 IDPs alone — more than ten percent of the year total in just one week,” Danielle Moylan a spokeswoman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told AFP. The total number of internally displaced people due to fighting since the start of the year stands at 323,500. In Helmand, which has seen some of the worst fighting since the Taliban began their insurgency against the western-backed Kabul government in 2001, authorities reported dozens of troops had been killed and more captured. “Around 50 Afghan security forces were killed, and the same numbers went missing in Helmand province over the past two weeks,” Tooryalai Hemat, the Helmand governor’s adviser, told AFP.

Headline:      Ethiopia Government Unveils Rules for State of Emergency

The Ethiopian government has unveiled stringent rules for its state of emergency which the opposition says is meant to curb a wave of protests, sometimes deadly, in the Oromia region and other areas.
Hundreds have been killed in anti-government protests in the past year, according to human rights groups and opposition activists. The protesters have been demanding wider freedoms in one of Africa’s best-performing economies The rules announced late Saturday restricts the movement of diplomats 40 kilometers (25 miles) outside of Addis Ababa without official permission. The emergency prohibits anyone from making contact with groups that are labeled as terrorist and from watching media channels like Oromia Media Network and Ethiopian Satellite Television and Radio, according to a statement issued by Siraj Fegessa, Ethiopia’s minster of defense and head of the Command Post set up to oversee the state of emergency law. Those who break the terms of the emergency risk jail terms of three to five years. The emergency also outlaws rallies and public meetings without permission from authorities and gives security forces the right to detain and search suspects without a court order.

Headline:     U.S. air strikes pound Libya’s Sirte to oust Islamic State militants

U.S. aircraft hit Islamic State targets with more 30 strikes over the last three days on the Libyan city of Sirte as pro-government forces push into its last militant-held districts, the U.S. military said on Monday. Libyan forces are close to ending a six-month campaign to liberate Sirte from Islamic State, which took over the city more than a year after taking advantage of factional infighting that emerged after the fall of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Forces mostly from nearby Misrata city are pushing ahead street by street, facing snipers and suicide bombers. They are helped by U.S. air strikes since August and coordination with small teams of Western special forces on the ground. On Sunday, Libyan forces recaptured the city’s Cambo area, and swept out tunnels used by militants to hide and prepare ambushes, and seized a field hospital. They found charred bodies of militants hit by air strikes. A Reuters reporter at the scene said they also came across booby traps using grenades and rocket shells. “At the moment, the forces are preparing to enter Ghiza Bahriya district,” Rida Essa, media official with the pro-government forces, said. U.S. aircraft carried out 36 strikes from Friday to Saturday mostly on enemy fighting positions but also on a car bomb, according to a U.S. Africa Command statement on Monday. The loss of Sirte would close down Islamic State’s main stronghold in North Africa and its only base outside Iraq and Syria, just as the militant group comes under pressure in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

Authorities are investigating after a local Republican Party office in Hillsborough, North Carolina was set on fire in what a state GOP official called an act of “political terrorism.” The GOP headquarters was vandalized with graffiti and damaged with a flammable material thrown through the front window. It happened at 347 Ja-Max Drive and was discovered Sunday morning by another business owner. Officials said it happened between 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. The graffiti included a swastika and the words “Nazi Republicans leave town or else,” which was spray-painted in black on the side of an adjacent building. It was contained in a bottle thrown through the window. The window had lettering on it that said, “Freedom Speaks.” Dallas Woodhouse, executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party, called the attack “political terrorism,” and said the party will not succumb to it.

Police say at least nine people have been killed at a Brazilian penitentiary in a clash between rival gangs of inmates in the northern state of Roraima. The state’s justice secretary Uziel Castro says in a statement that seven bodies were piled up and burned after the Sunday prison mutiny. Two other bodies were found in a different part of the Monte Cristo prison. Castro says at least three of the bodies were beheaded and efforts to identify them have been slow. Officers said Monday that about 50 people who were visiting the penitentiary in the state on the border with Venezuela and Guyana were released unharmed after being held hostage.

Headline:  Pakistan Says 3rd Chinese-built Nuclear Reactor Goes Into Operation

Pakistan has connected its new, largely Chinese-built nuclear reactor to the national grid as part of broader plans to overcome long-running crippling power shortages. The facility is located at Chashma, a town in the central province of Punjab, where China has constructed two other nuclear reactors, known as Chashma-1 and Chashma-2. They went into operation in 2000 and 2011 respectively, supplying 600 megawatts of electricity to the grid. The so-called Chashma-3 project, with an installed capacity of 340 megawatts, was inaugurated “on trial basis” this past Saturday, according to a spokesman for the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). “After performing various safety and functional tests, the plant will attain full power in first fortnight of December 2016,” Shahid Riaz, told VOA Monday.

Headline:    Kuwait ruler dissolves parliament, opens way for elections

Kuwait’s emir ordered the dissolution of parliament on Sunday, opening the way to fresh elections, saying “security challenges” in the region could best be addressed by consulting the popular will. A ballot would be the seventh since 2006 in the Gulf Arab state, where political strains have long held up economic development and the government is trying to introduce painful cuts to longstanding welfare benefits. Political stability in the major oil producer has traditionally depended on cooperation between the government and parliament, the oldest legislature in the Gulf Arab states. KUNA reported the decree as saying the move was linked to regional developments and “security challenges and their different impacts and risks, that require returning to the people – the origin of authority – to choose its representatives to express its directions, ambitions and contribute to facing these challenges.” A report on the official KUNA news agency about Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah’s decree gave no date for fresh elections for the 50-seat chamber but under constitutional rules a ballot should be held within 60 days.

Headline:    Rebel leader in eastern Ukraine killed in bomb blast

Arsen “Motorola” Pavlov, a pro-Russian rebel commander in eastern Ukraine, died in a bomb blast in his apartment building, both sides confirmed. Pavlov had been an active participant in the conflict between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine. The Russian-born Pavlov, head of the rebel military group known as the Sparta battalion, was accused by Ukraine of war crimes. In September, the newspaper Ukrainskaya Pravda said Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko accused Pavlov of shooting and killing a Ukrainian prisoner of war, adding “The monster will answer” for that crime, the BBC reported. In April 2015 Pavlov bragged to the Kiev Post he had killed 15 Ukrainian soldiers captured by rebels. Rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko, who calls himself the “prime minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic,” called the killing of Pavlov “terrorism” and added, “As I understand it, Petro Poroshenko has violated the cease-fire and declared war on us.” It remains unclear who killed Pavlov. On Sunday,; a bomb exploded in the elevator of his Donetsk apartment building. His personal guard also died. A Ukrainian neo-Nazi group claimed credit for the bomb in an Internet video, but is being discounted by analysts.

Headline:  FAA Warns Pilots: No Flying Parts of Montana on Saturday

The Obama administration is contemplating an unprecedented cyber covert action against Russia in retaliation for alleged Russian interference in the American presidential election, U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News. Current and former officials with direct knowledge of the situation say the CIA has been asked to deliver options to the White House for a wide-ranging “clandestine” cyber operation designed to harass and “embarrass” the Kremlin leadership. The sources did not elaborate on the exact measures the CIA was considering, but said the agency had already begun opening cyber doors, selecting targets and making other preparations for an operation. Former intelligence officers told NBC News that the agency had gathered reams of documents that could expose unsavory tactics by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

note***the 2nd story is from RedFlag news (2nd link) showing the FAA order above (3rd link).  While this is important information to have and continue watching, at this time Live Track FlightRadar is showing air craft activity over Montana (4th link). There were no large storms over the weekend and this week’s forecast shows only drizzle (5th link). Further investigation showed that the issuing authority 14 CFR 91.143 is flight limitation in the proximity of space flight operations (6th link).  This could include, according to retired military sources, the launching of a satellite.

Headline:  Houthis launch missiles into Saudi Arabia

A U.S. Navy destroyer was targeted on Saturday in a failed missile attack from territory in Yemen controlled by Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, the third such incident in the past week, U.S. officials said. Multiple surface-to-surface missiles were fired at the USS Mason sailing in international waters in the Red Sea but the warship used on-board countermeasures to defend itself and was not hit, one defense official said, citing initial information. The latest attack could provoke further retaliation by the U.S. military, which launched cruise missiles on Thursday against three coastal radar sites in Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in response to the two previous failed missile firings against the Mason. “The Mason once again appears to have come under attack in the Red Sea, again from coastal defense cruise missiles fired from the coast of Yemen,” Admiral John Richardson, U.S. chief of naval operations, said during a ship christening in Baltimore on Saturday. Another U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters: “We are assessing the situation. All of our ships and crews are safe and unharmed.” Thursday’s U.S. counter-strikes, authorized by President Barack Obama, marked Washington’s first direct military action against suspected Houthi-controlled targets in Yemen’s conflict and raised questions about the potential for further escalation.

Headline:    Russian Broadcaster RT Says UK Bank Suspends Its Accounts

Tense relations between Britain and Russia came under further strain Monday as Kremlin-backed broadcaster RT accused the U.K.’s NatWest bank of shutting down its accounts without explanation. The editor of the government-funded television channel, Margarita Simonyan, tweeted: “They’ve closed our accounts in Britain. All our accounts. ‘The decision is not subject to review.’ Praise be to freedom of speech!” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova posted on Facebook: “Looks like, while leaving the EU, London has left all its freedom of speech obligations there.” RT, formerly known as Russia Today, published what appears to be a letter from NatWest informing the broadcaster that “we have recently undertaken a review of your banking arrangements with us and reached the conclusion that we will no longer provide these facilities.” The letter said the firm’s bank accounts would be “cancelled and closed” on Dec. 12. Royal Bank of Scotland Group, which owns NatWest, said such decisions “are not taken lightly” — but indicated it might not be set in stone. “We are reviewing the situation and are contacting the customer to discuss this further,” RBS Group said in a statement. “The bank accounts remain open and are still operative.” Britain’s Treasury — which was not told of the bank’s decision in advance — declined to comment. Britain has imposed economic sanctions on a number of Russian individuals, but has not introduced any new measures since February 2015.

Headline:  Iceland and Norway could LEAVE European Economic trade area for new deal with Britain

According to a newly-adopted foreign policy from the governing Progressive Party, the time has come for Iceland to consider whether the EEA and Schengen deals are working for them. The new policy, adopted at the party’s national conference earlier this month, states the EEA agreement formed the basis for the state’s cooperation and positive relationship with the European Union as a whole. It also claims Icelanders “should continue to seek cooperation with European nations, inside and outside the EU, on grounds of free and fair agreements and cooperation based on equality and mutual benefits.” But the policy also looks into Iceland’s membership of the EEA – and questions whether it is necessary for the future of the Nordic country. One reason to quit the allegiance is the UK’s vote to leave the European Union. the report claims. The Progressive Party claims that due to “fundamental changes” to the EEA that include Britain opting to leave the bloc, the government must look into alternatives. The foreign policy read: ”The United Kingdom is Iceland’s largest trading partner, both regarding trade in goods and services. Iceland should initiate talks with the British government with the aim of securing at least the current level of trade between the two countries.”

Headline:  The stock market is turning into a sloppy, ugly mess—and it could get worse

It is getting dicey out there for Wall Street investors, although stocks eked out a modest rise on Friday. U.S. equities have been bouncing around lately. And the trend has been predominantly lower. Although it hasn’t been the sort of dizzying tumble for equities that would elicit an instant spike in fear, it has been, however, the kind of plodding descent that has the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.07%  down nearly 300 points since the end of July. In fact, the Dow and the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.11%  are on the verge of tallying three straight months of declines, with October shaping up to be the ugliest monthly fall since January—the month after the Federal Reserve raised rates for the first time in a decade. (Friday’s jump on better bank earnings will have to be factored after the close.) But, if the Dow posts a loss in October it would be the first time the blue-chip index logged three consecutive monthly declines since the period ended in September 2011. The S&P 500 notched three consecutive monthly loses earlier this year, ended February.

Typhoon Sarika lashed the main Philippine island of Luzon on Sunday, flattening homes and toppling trees and power pylons as more than 12,000 people fled to safer ground, officials said. Minor landslides and flooding were also reported a day after the cyclone brushed past the remote eastern island of Catanduanes and left one person drowned and three others missing there. “We were told roofs were ripped off houses and there were fallen trees but that’s about the extent of damage that we know of,” Ricardo Jalad, head of the government’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, told reporters. Nelianto Bihasa, the mayor of the town of Baler where Sarika made landfall before dawn, told ABS-CBN network the typhoon destroyed at least 20 houses and left one person injured there. “Many trees and power pylons were toppled,” Bihasa said, adding the coastal town of 36,000 people some 145 kilometres (90 miles) northeast of Manila was without electricity. “This was no ordinary typhoon,” Bihasa added. Government crews and utility workers immediately went to work clearing roads blocked by landslides, toppled trees and posts and other debris. Some towns began sending people in shelters back to their homes as the danger passed.

Headline:     Report: Israel to Purchase New German Submarines Targeting Iran, Syria

Israel and Germany have begun top echelon political and security negotiations of the purchase of new Dolphin class submarines, Israel Defense reported Friday. The IDF’s five-submarine fleet, its most expensive weapons system, is its longest arm in a potential war with a nuclear Iran. The purchase of the sixth submarine was an option that was part of the 2012 deal signed between the two countries, with Germany paying for about a third of the cost of each sub — $180 million out of half a billion dollars. In the past the IDF’s strategic thinking regarding the submarine fleet was in dispute between former Defense Minister Ehud Barak and former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Olmert accused Barak of planning to buy a sixth submarine not because this was what the IDF needed (then Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi was vehemently against such a purchase) but because the Germans bribed him. Eventually, it was Olmert who ended up being sentenced to prison over  taking a bribe.

Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) said Thursday that security forces have arrested 16 Arab citizens of Israel suspected of supporting ISIS. The detainees were arrested during the month of September and are residents of the city of Taybe. Prior to being arrested members of the group are suspected of trying to set fire to the local soccer stadium in order to prevent a concert scheduled for last months Eid al-Adha holiday. Under questioning, the suspects told Shin Bet interrogators that the arson attempt was inspired by ISIS ideology – that is to say, that they believe that live music is “immoral” and “against Islam”, and violates the principles of the “Islamic State.”

Late last month, the Quds Brigade and the Syrian Arab Army succeeded in taking the strategic Handarat Palestinian refugee camp and Kindi Hospital north of Aleppo proper, following the launch of an offensive in late September and several rounds of intense back-and-forth with the Islamist-led Fatah Halab coalition. On Sukkot, 17 Tishrei, 5777, Wednesday, October 19th, 2016, during a very critical time, the Temple Mount and Land of Israel Faithful Movement will march and make a pilgrimage to the Holy Temple Mount starting from Jaffa Gate through the streets of biblical Jerusalem to Mount Moriah. The security forces of Israel prepare themselves to prevent any Arab violence against the faithful marchers and pilgrims. Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles, is one of the three pilgrimage festivals that the G‑d of Israel ordained as a blessing upon Israel. The main commandment of G‑d to Israel is to make a pilgrimage to His Holy Mountain where He will share His love and blessings with His people Israel. Sukkot is also the festival of the anniversary of the dedication of the First Holy Temple by King Solomon. During our pilgrimage the Faithful Movement will celebrate this exciting biblical event and will call the government of Israel to follow the example originally set by King Solomon with no fear from human powers and with great trust in the G‑d of Israel alone to fulfill His call to build His Holy Temple with no delay. The Faithful Movement will also call to stop pilgrimages and the traditional priestly blessings that are given near the Western Wall, including any kind of worship ceremonies but rather to do all of these at the correct place that G‑d chose for these exciting activities, which is only on the Holy Temple Mount in Jerusalem. These holy activities ordained for Israel alone to accomplish must be conducted in the appropriate place with no fear from any human power and with complete trust in the One True Living G‑d of Israel. The Faithful Movement will also petition to allow her to bring a model of the Third Holy Temple in order to share it with the great crowds who will attend the priestly blessing on this special morning near the Western Wall. This pilgrimage will be an exciting event just like in biblical times. Everyone is invited to take part in this major endeavor of the Temple Mount and Land of Israel Faithful Movement.

Headline: PA: UNESCO vote is call for Israel to end ‘illegal, colonial’ acts

Due to Israeli efforts, no European country backed the motion, which describes the Temple Mount as holy to Muslims alone, without mentioning the site’s significance to Jews. UNESCO adopted an anti-Israel resolution Thursday that disregards Judaism’s historic connection to the Temple Mount and casts doubt on the link between Judaism and the Western Wall. Twenty-four countries voted in favor of the decision while six voted against and 26 abstained while just two were missing from the vote. The U.S., Britain, Germany, Holland, Lithuania and Estonia voted against the resolution. A senior source said that the efforts of Israeli diplomats significantly changed the votes of European states, none of which supported the motion. Israeli efforts, he said, succeeded in swaying France, Sweden, Slovenia, Argentina, Togo and India to abstain from the vote. In an unusual move, Israel on Thursday sought the Holy See’s help in forestalling the adoption of the resolution, arguing that it will also harm Christians. In addition, Israel’s permanent delegate to UNESCO, Ambassador Carmel Shama Hacohen, explained that the Palestinians enjoy an automatic majority of support at UNESCO and so his goal was to expand as much as possible the number of those opposed. “We are mobilizing to erode and drive a wedge in the automatic majority that has stood against us for the past two years,” he said. “The efforts are indeed bearing fruit: From the situation we were in when only the USA voted for us alone, we’ve gradually increased the number to six countries and also increased the number of abstainers.” Shama Hacohen went on to say that “Israel and the Jewish people don’t require UNESCO’s or any other country’s confirmation of the special connection between the Jewish people and the State of Israel and Jerusalem in general and the holy sites therein like the Western Wall and the Temple Mount in particular.” The ambassador continued, “There is no connection of another people to another place in the world that comes close to the strength and depth of our connection to Jerusalem from a religious, historical and national perspective, a connection that has stood the test of 2,000 years.”

Headline:   Jordanians protest against Israel gas deal for third week in a row

More than a thousand people protested in the Jordanian capital Amman on Friday against a recent government agreement to import natural gas from Israel, local media reported. This is the third consecutive week protests have taken place against the controversial deal, which was signed on 26 September. This Friday’s demonstration departed from the Grand Husseini Mosque in central Amman after Friday prayers. Chants included “Oh great Jordanian people, the enemy’s (Israel) gas is imperialism,” and “from the south to the north, the gas of the enemy is occupation.” The government has defended its decision by saying it will cut the state’s energy bill and diversify their sources of gas supplies.

Headline:  Lebanon security foils ISIS terror plot: report

Lebanese security has foiled an ISIS-directed terror plot aiming to target Shiite Muslims in the run up to the holy day of Ashura, according to a local daily. As-Safir newspaper reported Friday morning that Beirut’s southern suburbs (Dahiyeh) avoided a “massacre” after General Security managed to capture a would-be suicide bomber on October 5. The terror suspect confessed that he was preparing to blow himself up on October 7 in “one of the largest mosques in Dahiyeh” during Muslim Friday communal prayers. According to the report, another would-be suicide bomber was apprehended by Lebanese army intelligence, with both of them being dispatched by an ISIS official in the jihadist organization’s de facto capital of Raqqa, although neither of the suspects knew of each other. As-Safir added that two independent cells were providing logistic support for the attack, residency papers and secure transportation as well scouting intended targets.

Russia is moving in to train with Egypt in military strategies, equipment and personnel and build a closer relationship towards the goal of “helping” in the fight to contain and trim back terrorists in the northern Sinai. Towards that end, Russia and Egypt are set to carry out their first-ever joint anti-terror military exercise “in a desert environment. The joint paratroopers’ drill in Egypt is to involve six air fields and 15 aircraft and helicopters for various purposes, in addition to 10 combat vehicles, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. Russian airborne troops are to be sent to the north of Africa on an Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft in mid-October, the ministry told the English-language edition of Gazeta.ru. “Special attention is given to the knowledge of the customs and traditions of the Egyptian people”, the Defense Ministry said. According to the report, Russia will work together with Egypt on developing “a common approach to encircling and destroying illegal armed formations in a desert environment.” Russia contends that Egypt has lost control over the northern Sinai, which has become a terrorist stronghold, and is “no longer able to count on Washington’s support in this matter.”

Headline:  Exclusive: Obama, aides expected to weigh Syria military options on Friday

U.S. President Barack Obama and his top foreign policy advisers are expected to meet on Friday to consider their military and other options in Syria as Syrian and Russian aircraft continue to pummel Aleppo and other targets, U.S. officials said. Some top officials argue the United States must act more forcefully in Syria or risk losing what influence it still has over moderate rebels and its Arab, Kurdish and Turkish allies in the fight against Islamic State, the officials told Reuters. One set of options includes direct U.S. military action such as air strikes on Syrian military bases, munitions depots or radar and anti-aircraft bases, said one official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. This official said one danger of such action is that Russian and Syrian forces are often co-mingled, raising the possibility of a direct confrontation with Russia that Obama has been at pains to avoid. U.S. officials said they consider it unlikely that Obama will order U.S. air strikes on Syrian government targets, and they stressed that he may not make any decisions at the planned meeting of his National Security Council. One alternative, U.S. officials said, is allowing allies to provide U.S.-vetted rebels with more sophisticated weapons, although not shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, which Washington fears could be used against Western airliners. The White House declined to comment.

Renewed bombing of rebel-held eastern Aleppo has killed more than 150 people this week, rescue workers said on Thursday, as the Syrian government steps up its Russian-backed offensive to take the whole city.  Airstrikes against rebel-held areas of eastern Aleppo had tapered off over the weekend after the Syrian army announced it would reduce raids for what it described as humanitarian reasons. But the strikes have intensified since Tuesday. Airstrikes killed 13 people on Thursday, when warplanes hit several rebel-held districts, including Al-Kalaseh, Bustan Al-Qasr and Al-Sakhour, Civil Defense official Ibrahim Abu Al-Laith told Reuters from Aleppo. “The bombing started at 2 a.m. and it’s going on till now,” he said. In a government-held area of western Aleppo, at least four children were killed and 10 wounded on Thursday when shells landed near a school, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. Meanwhile, Britain is looking at its military involvement in Syria but any action would need to be part of a coalition involving the US and is not likely to happen soon, Foreign Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday.

Headline:     ISIS crushes rebellion plot in Mosul as army closes in

A few hundred Iraqi special forces arrived Friday at the front line near militant-held Mosul, one small part of a series of troop movements that have massed thousands of soldiers ahead of an operation seeking to retake the country’s second-largest city from the Islamic State group. “Yesterday, our commander told us: This is it, the liberation of Mosul is beginning,” a special forces sergeant said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media. Officials from Iraq and the U.S.-led coalition have said preparations and planning of the operation are ongoing, but there is widespread speculation it will be launched this month. The Iraqi troops interviewed by The Associated Press were camped in a field across the Great Zab River separating Nineveh province from Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Nearby, other members of their unit were moving into an abandoned village, converting homes into a barracks for temporary camp. The large volume of forces needed for the Mosul fight — Iraqi and coalition officials say at least 30,000 will take part — has overcrowded the few bases that Iraq’s military has along the Mosul front line. The sergeant said his unit traveled in a convoy from Tikrit to the front near the district of Khazer, on the edges of the Nineveh plain about 18 miles from Mosul. Along the way, he saw thousands more Iraqi soldiers being deployed, he said. “We are here for the Mosul battle, and we won’t return home until we finish it,” he added.

Iraqi sources said that the Iraqi army is receiving anti-drone weapons after deadly attacks by ISIS using “booby-trapped drones” in the northern part of the country, Al Arabiya News Channel reported on Friday. A booby-trapped drone operated by ISIS killed two Kurdish fighters and injured two members of the French special forces in the Kurdish area of Iraq, two political sources said on Wednesday. The incident, in early October in Erbil in northern Iraq, has been reported by French media outlets but neither the army nor the defense ministry has confirmed it. One of the French sources confirmed the use of a “booby-trapped drones in Iraq” while another confirmed that two French soldiers were hurt in the incident. Le Monde newspaper reported that the soldiers were operating with Kurdish peshmerga fighters when the drone exploded. One of the French soldiers has life-threatening injuries. Both have been flown back to France for treatment.

With winter approaching in Afghanistan, Taliban militants there seem more determined than ever to expand their influence across the country. On Friday, the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan announced that it was sending Western advisers to Farah province, a rural area just northwest of Helmand Province, to buoy Afghan soldiers there battling the insurgent group. The newfound Western presence in Farah comes roughly a week after Taliban fighters began making concerted efforts to seize the city of Farah, the capital of the province. Around the same time, the Taliban began offensives near Helmand’s provincial capital of Lashkar Gah and also managed to enter the northern city of Kunduz before being pushed back to the city’s outskirts after more than a week of heavy fighting. “What we believe we’re seeing right now is the Taliban trying to make an effort before the end of the year to achieve their 2016 strategic objective of capturing a provincial capital,” said Brig. Gen. Charles Cleveland, the spokesman for the U.S. mission in Afghanistan, in an email. It is unclear how many advisers are heading to Farah, but Resolute Support, the name of the NATO-led Afghanistan mission, tweeted that it had sent an “expeditionary advisory package,” or group of soldiers and advisers, to the embattled province.

Headline:     Egypt’s Sissi Denies Supporting Opposition in Ethiopia

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi on Thursday denied Ethiopian accusations that his country was supporting the opposition after a wave of violent protests that left hundreds dead. Ethiopia accused “elements” in Eritrea, Egypt and elsewhere on Monday of being behind protests over land grabs and human rights that prompted the government to declare a state of emergency. The unrest has cast a shadow over Ethiopia, where a state-led industrial drive has created one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, but whose government also faces criticism at home and abroad over its authoritarian approach. Ethiopia’s government spokesman said Egypt, which is embroiled in a row with Addis Ababa over sharing Nile waters, was a source of backing for armed gangs though that backing may not come from state actors. Sissi denied those accusations.

Fighting in South Sudan killed at least 60 people this week, the military said on Friday, stoking fears the region could plunge back into full-scale war. Armed men loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar killed 11 government soldiers and 28 civilians from Saturday to Thursday, Koang said in a press statement. Twenty-one rebels were also killed, he said. A spokesman for the rebels denied the accusations. “Those who are committing atrocities and raping are deserted SPLA (government) soldiers who have not been paid for several months and their families are starving. Our forces are aiming to target only those in uniforms,” the deputy spokesman for the opposition forces, Dickson Gatluak, told Reuters by phone from Ethiopia.

Myanmar’s security forces have now killed at least 26 people in response to attacks on police that have sparked a dramatic escalation in violence in a Muslim-majority region along its border with Bangladesh, according to reports in state media. Armed men believed to be from the long-oppressed Rohingya Muslim minority launched a coordinated assault on three border police posts in the early hours Sunday, killing nine police, injuring five and making off with dozens of weapons and more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition. Military personnel and police reinforcements have poured into the Muslim-majority township of Maungdaw, northern Rakhine State, and have clashed with groups of up to 300 men, armed with pistols, swords and knives, according to official reports. Human rights groups and advocates for the stateless Rohingya have voiced concern that the civilian population may be caught up in the authorities’ violent response. Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi said that her government was “exercising the rule of law” in dealing with the attacks, the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said on Thursday.

Headline:  Putin Ally Warns Americans To Vote For Trump Or Face Nuclear War

Headline:  PUTINS URGENT WARNING: “WORLD WAR III IS ABOUT TO START”

Headline:  Russia, India to sign deal on air defense missile systems and helicopters

The name of what is arguably Russia’s most flamboyant, ultra-nationalist politician, and according to some the local incarnation of Donald Trump,  Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a deputy in the state Duma and leader of the nationalist LDPR party, is familiar to frequent readers: he most recently made an appearance on these pages two months ago, when he warned Germany that it risks utter destruction if it continued on its present track of operating Bundeswehr forces in the Baltics. Zhirinovsky also shares another feature with Donald Trump: both are outspoken to a fault. Which is why we were not surprised to read that as Reuters reported earlier, Zhirinovsky urged Americans to vote for Donald Trump as president or “risk being dragged into a nuclear war.” In an interview with Reuters, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, known in Russia and Europe for his fiery rhetoric, said that Trump was the only person able to de-escalate dangerous tensions between Moscow and Washington. On the other hand, Hillary Clinton could spark World War Three, said the Russian who received a top state award from Putin after his pro-Kremlin Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) came third in Russia’s parliamentary election last month. “Relations between Russia and the United States can’t get any worse. The only way they can get worse is if a war starts,” said Zhirinovsky, speaking in his huge office on the 10th floor of Russia’s State Duma, or lower house of parliament. “Americans voting for a president on Nov. 8 must realize that they are voting for peace on Planet Earth if they vote for Trump. But if they vote for Hillary it’s war. It will be a short movie. There will be Hiroshimas and Nagasakis everywhere.” Well, we said he was outspoken. And, Just like Trump, Zhirinovsky tends to polarize his fellow countrymen. According to Reuters while “many Russians regard the politician as a clownish figure who makes outspoken statements to grab attention” he is also “widely viewed as a faithful servant of Kremlin policy, sometimes used to float radical opinions to test public reaction.”

The US has hit radar sites in Yemen after one of its warships in the Red Sea came under missile attack for the second time in days. The Pentagon said the sites were on territory controlled by Houthi rebels. The rebels denied firing the missiles. It marks the first time the US has fired at rebel targets since the start of the Yemen conflict in March 2015. The US said initial assessments showed three radar sites involved in the recent attacks had been destroyed. It said the US strikes had been authorised by President Barack Obama. They were carried out using Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from the destroyer USS Nitze, according to US officials. “These limited self-defence strikes were conducted to protect our personnel, our ships, and our freedom of navigation in this important maritime passageway,” Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said. “The United States will respond to any further threat to our ships and commercial traffic, as appropriate.” The Houthi-controlled Saba news agency quoted an unnamed rebel official as saying neither the movement nor its allies were involved in any of the recent missile attacks. As The Independent reports, a US government spokesperson has struggled to answer questions put to him on why the US condemns Russian bombing in Syria, and supports Saudi-led bombing in Yemen, both of which have killed thousands of civilians. Meanwhile, Iran sent two warships to the Gulf of Aden on Thursday, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported, establishing a military presence in waters off Yemen where the U.S. military launched cruise missile strikes on areas controlled by Iran-backed Houthi forces. “Iran’s Alvand and Bushehr warships have been dispatched to the Gulf of Aden to protect trade vessels from piracy,” Tasnim reported. The U.S. military strikes were in response to failed missile attacks this week on a U.S. Navy destroyer, U.S. officials said.

Headline:   Obama expands his executive power beyond Earth

President Obama has expanded his use of executive power beyond bounds of earth, signing an executive order Thursday to prepare the federal government to deal with the effects of space weather events. That space weather — which includes phenomena like solar flares, geomagnetic disturbances — can have big effects on everyday technologies like global positioning systems, satellite communication and aviation. And if the weather is extreme enough, Obama said, it “has the potential to simultaneously affect and disrupt health and safety across entire continents.” Solar winds could disable the electrical power grid, resulting in “cascading failures” that would affect almost every area of modern life — including basic health and safety issues like the water supply. The executive order came as Obama prepared to travel to Pittsburgh for a technology conference focusing on artificial intelligence, space exploration, clean energy and precision medicine. Like many executive orders, Obama’s directive instructs executive branch agencies on their responsibilities in preparing and responding to space weather events. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy will coordinate the efforts of agencies across the government, including Defense, Commerce, Energy and NASA, which will work together to improve their ability to forecast space weather events and protect critical infrastructure from their effects. Obama also ordered the release of federal data on previous space weather events. Obama’s executive order also made public for the first time the existence of a previously unknown secret policy directive he signed on July 15. Presidential Policy Directive 40 established a new national continuity policy that defined the “national essential functions” of the federal government. Such directives, known as PPDs, are an often secret form of executive order in the realm of national security.

Headline:   296 Refugees Diagnosed with Active TB in Minnesota

Two hundred and ninety-six refugees were diagnosed with active tuberculosis (TB) between 2010 and 2014 in Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Seventy-one were diagnosed within one year of their arrival, while 225 were diagnosed after the first year. The number of active TB cases reported among refugees arriving in Minnesota is ten times higher than reported in any of the fourteen other states that have released refugee TB data to the public, or made it available to Breitbart News. The previous high among the other reporting states was Wisconsin, which reported 27 cases of active TB among refugees arriving in the state between 2014 and 2015. The other thirteen states, and the number of diagnosed cases of active TB among refugees are: Nebraska (21)Louisiana (21), Michigan (19)Vermont (17)Colorado (16), Florida (11), Ohio (11 in one county)Idaho (7), Kentucky (9 in one county)North Dakota (4 in one county),  Indiana (4), California (3), and Tennessee, where two refugees have been diagnosed with the very dangerous, multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB. With 296 cases of active TB diagnosed among refugees over five years, Minnesota reported more cases than all fourteen other states where that data has been made available — a combined total of 172 cases.

Headline:    Pentagon issues handbook on sex change in the ranks

Political correctness remains a central characteristic of the Obama administration’s policies. Take the Pentagon’s new anti-discrimination policy on what a newly-published handbook calls “gender dysphoria,” or “the distress that some transgender individuals experience due to a mismatch between their gender and their sex assigned at birth.” Under the new policies, military commanders are now responsible for approving or denying sex changes for troops who self-identify as the opposite sex, according to the 72-page handbook, “Transgender Service in the U.S. Military: An Implementation Handbook,” published Sept. 30. “The commander, informed by the recommendations of the [military medical provider], the [service central coordination cells], and others, as appropriate, will respond to the request to transition gender while ensuring readiness by minimizing impacts to the mission (including deployment, operations, training, exercise schedules, and critical skills availability), as well as to the morale and welfare and good order and discipline of the command,” the handbook states. The handbook is the result of a Pentagon policy adopted in July that permits troops who self-identify as the opposite sex while serving openly in the ranks. In the past, such cross-dressers were limited by the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy of hiding sexual orientation.

Headline: United Methodist and Episcopalian Church Clergy Lead Prayer Rally to “Bless” Abortion Clinic

In Ohio, United Methodist Church pastor, Reverend Laura Young, says she believes pro-life protesters in front of Planned Parenthood and other abortion facilities have “misguided faith.” In fact, she thinks these clinics should be blessed, which is why she went out to an abortion facility called Preterm on October 8th in Cleveland. In 2014, Preterm was involved in the abortion-related death of Lakisha Wilson. Young explained her acceptance of abortion like this: “Christianity, like most faiths, is founded on love. Watching protesters shouting judgment and hate based on what they call religion is horrible. Is that loving God? Is that loving your neighbor as yourself?” Think Progress reports that the group hopes their “blessing” will protect Preterm from “preachy protesters, as well as encourage the strength and bravery of those providing and relying on its services.” Young plans to go out to other abortion facilities in the state if their event in Cleveland is successful. Young also says religious groups are fueling the so-called war on women. She explained, “Women are being attacked at a moral level by the radical Religious Right. They’ve hijacked the political discussion. This event is an opportunity for progressive religious leaders to stop the silence. We need to be in the conversation.”

Leaked Emails Show Hillary Clinton Campaign Chief Discussing ‘Revolution’ Against Bishop

WASHINGTON — The chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign appears to discuss with a progressive figure whether it is possible to “plant the seeds of the revolution” against the U.S. bishops and their stances, a leaked email hacked from a private account revealed.

The email exchange, entitled “Catholic Spring,” also suggests that two organizations — Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good and Catholics United — were created for such a purpose.

“There needs to be a Catholic Spring, in which Catholics themselves demand the end of a middle ages dictatorship and the beginning of a little democracy and respect for gender equality in the Catholic church,” wrote Sandy Newman, president of the Washington-based political action organization Voices for Progress, in the first of two emails in the February 2012 exchange.

The recipient of the email, John Podesta, is Catholic and a graduate of Georgetown University. He currently serves as the head of Hillary Clinton’s campaign for presidency. Previously, Podesta served as president and CEO of the think tank Center for American Progress, and as the chief of staff for President Bill Clinton. http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/leaked-emails-show-hillary-clinton-campaign-chief-discussing-revolution-aga

Fox News: Decision to Not Prosecute Hillary Left FBI, DOJ Disgusted

Image: Fox News: Decision to Not Prosecute Hillary Left FBI, DOJ Disgusted

FBI Director James Comey (Getty Images) Wednesday, 12 Oct 2016 07:18 PM

FBI Director James Comey’s recommendation that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton not be prosecuted for using a private email server did not sit well with lower ranking members of the agency or at the Justice Department, Fox News reports an anonymous source involved in the case said.

“No trial level attorney agreed, no agent working the case agreed, with the decision not to prosecute — it was a top-down decision,” the source, identified as a senior FBI official, told FoxNews.com.

Comey’s decision was not an unanimous decision, the source said, adding, “It was unanimous that we all wanted her [Clinton’s] security clearance yanked.”

“It is well known that the FBI agents on the ground, the human beings who did the investigative work, had built an extremely strong case against Hillary Clinton and were furious when the case did not move forward,” Fox News judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano said. “They believe the decision not to prosecute came from The White House.”

Comey on July 5 announced his agency would not recommend prosecution, though his description of Clinton’s actions led critics to believe he should have. Comey testified to Congress that the governing statute requires intent, and that his investigation was unable to prove intent.

“Basically, James Comey hijacked the DOJ’s role by saying ‘no reasonable prosecutor would bring this case,'” the FBI source said. “The FBI does not decide who to prosecute and when, that is the sole province of a prosecutor – that never happens.” http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/agents-fbi-doj-disgusted/2016/10/12/id/753083/?ns_mail_uid=612513&ns_mail_job=1691717_10132016&s=al&dkt_nbr=aqkfcz8n

Headline:     UNESCO to vote on resolutions ignoring Jewish ties to Temple Mount

UNESCO is slated to vote twice this month on Palestinian initiated resolutions that ignore Jewish ties to its most holy religious site of the Temple Mount and the Western Wall area in Jerusalem.
The first of these votes will be taken on Thursday or Friday of this week by the 58-member Executive Board of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization in Paris. In advance of that vote, Israel’s Mission to UNESCO in Paris, has given board members and international diplomats a brochure detailing the deep historical connections Judaism has to those sites, which are also holy to Christianity and Islam. “These facts and evidences will leave no doubt, and without undermining other connection of other religions to the holy places in Jerusalem, of the deepest and longest Jewish presence in Jerusalem since ancient times,” Israel’s Ambassador to UNESCO Carmel Shama-Hacohen wrote. “Every attempt to distort the history and harm the above mentioned relations of the Jewish people and Jerusalem, is an attempt to rewrite the history in a dangerous, unfair and one-sided manner,” he said. Among the evidence listed in the brochure is a 9th Century BC inscription referring to the House of David, an 8th Century BC seal from King Hezekiah, and a stone etching of the Jewish Menorah from the year 66 AD found in Jerusalem.

Headline:     Report: Obama Administration ‘Manufacturing Crisis’ With Israel

With its eyes on the potential launch of an Israeli-Palestinian peace initiative after next month’s presidential election, the Obama administration is “manufacturing a crisis” over settlement construction, to exert diplomatic pressure on the Jewish state, The Weekly Standard reported on Sunday, citing sources in Congress and the American Jewish community. Last week, the administration raised many eyebrows with its unusually strident criticism of Israel’s settlement policies following the approval of dozens of new homes in the West Bank. One congressional source told The Weekly Standard that the administration had been “waiting for an opening” to hit hard against Israel, and an official with an American-Jewish organization was quoted as saying the administration “wants to be able to say the Israelis forced them to act.” The vociferous anti-settlement rhetoric used by White House and State Department spokespersons was shortly followed by the publication of a New York Times editorial board op-ed calling on the administration to back a UN Security Council resolution that would outline the parameters of a two-state solution. In response to that op-ed, Mark Dubowitz — executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) think thank — tweeted on Friday, “Obama is laying the groundwork for UN & EU sanctions on Israel. I’ve seen this playbook before.” Later the same day, Dubowitz took aim at the administration again, tweeting, “Unlike with Iran, all options are on Obama’s table to pound Israel.” As reported by The Algemeiner extensively, many observers are expecting a US-led peace drive during the lame-duck period between the presidential election on Nov. 8 and the inauguration of Obama’s successor on Jan. 20.

While today, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, means long hours of intense prayer, the modern holiday service is really a stand-in for Biblical sacrifices performed by the High Priest as he entered the Holy of Holies in the Temple in order to beg forgiveness for the Jewish people. While the Temple was standing, thousands would gather to witness the holy offerings and pray for atonement. Though the Temple was not built this year, many significant events have brought us closer than ever before to its prophesied rebuilding, and all over the world, Jews are praying that this time next year, the Yom Kippur service will take place in the Third Temple! ~photos~

Headline: Nasrallah: Saudi leadership pushing country to abyss

Hezbollah’s leader blasted Saudi Arabia over its military campaign in Yemen days after an airstrike conducted by the Riyadh-led coalition killed over 100 people in the conflict-stricken country. “The Saudi leadership is pushing their country to the abyss,” Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said Tuesday night at a ceremony on the eve of Ashura, a holy day revered by Shiite Muslims. Nasrallah, who delivered his speech in a rare public appearance, rebuked Saudi Arabia for its campaign against the Houthis of Yemen, who are backed by Iran. On Saturday, an airstrike by the Saudi coalition killed over 140 people and injured hundreds of others at the funeral for Sheikh Ali al-Rawishan, the father of the interior minister in the government run by the Houthis. “Saudi Arabia’s leaders must return to their senses,” he said, amid a chorus of “Death to the Saud family” calls chanted by the crowd of thousands of Hezbollah supporters gathered at the Sayyed al-Shuhada Complex in the southern Beirut suburbs.

Headline: U.S. Navy destroyer again targeted by missiles from Yemen-U.S. officials

The Pentagon has said that it is considering a military retaliation against Houthi militants in Yemen after two missiles were fired Sunday at the destroyer USS Mason from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen. Both missiles fell short of the destroyer and landed in the sea. Captain Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said today that the U.S. is still assessing who fired missiles at the destroyer when it was in the Red Sea on Sunday.  “Anytime anyone engages a U.S. Navy ship at sea in hostility … they do so at great peril to themselves,” said Davis. Asked if that could mean retaliatory strikes against those responsible for firing the missiles, Davis said, “Those things are things that we’re looking at.” “We want very much to get to the bottom of what happened,” said Davis. “We’re going to find out who did this, and we’ll take action accordingly.” Meanwhile, a U.S. Navy destroyer was targeted on Wednesday in a failed missile attack from territory in Yemen controlled by Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, the second such incident in the past four days, U.S. officials told Reuters.

Egypt has increased cooperation with Russia under the leadership of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi, the former army leader who overthrew his elected but divisive Islamist predecessor in 2013. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has cancelled a planned visit to France amid a row over Syria. He had been due to meet French President Francois Hollande and open a new Orthodox church later this month. But after France’s government said talks would be confined to Syria, the visit was halted, French presidential sources said. On Monday, Mr Hollande suggested Russia could face war crimes charges over its bombardment of Syria’s city of Aleppo. The French presidency had told the Russians Mr Hollande would attend only one event with Mr Putin during the visit planned for 19 October – a working meeting on Syria, according to the sources. But after this Russia “let it be known that it wanted to postpone the visit”, they added. A spokesman for Mr Putin confirmed the trip had been cancelled, adding that the visit would take place when it becomes “comfortable for President Hollande”.

Headline:   Pentagon: ISIS arming small drones with explosives

Insurgent groups like Hezbollah and the Islamic State group have learned how to weaponize surveillance drones and use them against each other, adding a new twist to Syria’s civil war, a U.S. military official and others say. A video belonging to an Al Qaeda offshoot, Jund al-Aqsa, purportedly shows a drone landing on Syrian military barracks. In another video , small explosives purportedly dropped by the Iran-backed Shiite militant group Hezbollah target the Sunni militant group Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, formerly known as the Nusra Front. A U.S. military official, who spoke anonymously because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said the U.S. military is aware of the development. Commanders have warned troops to take cover if they see what they might have once dismissed as a surveillance drone, he said. The head of the Airwars project, which tracks the international air war in Iraq, Syria and Libya, said the weaponized drones are clumsy but will scare people. “There are a million ways you can weaponize drones — fire rockets, strap things in and crash them,” Chris Woods said. He added: “This is the stuff everyone has been terrified about for years, and now it’s a reality.”

Monitors say Russian jet fighters on Tuesday resumed heavy bombing in rebel-held eastern districts of the war-shattered Syrian city of Aleppo, targeting two opposition-held neighborhoods and killing more than 20 people. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights called Tuesday’s onslaught “the heaviest Russian bombardment” since the government of President Bashar al-Assad announced last week it would cut back on airstrikes, ostensibly to allow civilians to disarm and leave opposition-held neighborhoods. However, civilians, distrustful of the Assad government, have largely ignored the offer, which insurgents fighting to topple the government have called a deception.

A planned U.S.-backed operation to drive Islamic State from the Iraqi city of Mosul could cause “blood and fire” in the region if not carefully handled, Turkey warned on Wednesday, saying it would keep troops nearby despite Baghdad’s opposition. President Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey, locked in an escalating row with Iraq over who should take part in the planned Mosul assault, would do all it could to prevent the operation from deepening sectarian conflict on its borders. Mosul, home to up to 1.5 million people, has been the headquarters of Islamic State’s self-declared caliphate in northern Iraq since 2014. The battle for the city, expected later this month, will help shape the future of Iraq and the legacy of U.S. President Barack Obama. “We will use all our resources to prevent our brothers in Syria and Iraq from being crushed under the wheels of global power games, and to keep us from suffering a similar fate,” Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul. “We are determined to deflate the balloon of sectarian conflict aimed at drowning the region in blood and fire.” Soldiers from Turkey, a regional power with the second largest armed forces in NATO, have been training Sunni Muslim and Kurdish Peshmerga units at the Bashiqa camp in northern Iraq and want them to take part in the expected battle for Mosul. But their presence has sparked a row with the Shi’ite-led government in Baghdad, which is keen that its forces be at the forefront of the offensive. Erdogan said: “Turkey cannot intervene against the threats right next to it? We will never accept this… We don’t need permission for this, and we don’t plan on getting it.”

Headline:   ISIS drone kills Kurdish fighters, hurts French troops

A remote-controlled hobby plane belonging to ISIS and rigged with hidden explosives killed two Kurdish fighters and wounded two French special operations troops near Mosul, French and U.S. sources confirmed Wednesday. While the Pentagon has previously said ISIS uses simple, commercially available drones to conduct surveillance and carry small explosives, this was the first known deadly case. According to a U.S. defense official, the incident unfolded Oct. 2 when a small plane with a styrofoam body was either shot down or crashed in Irbil in northern Iraq. Two local Kurdish peshmerga fighters grabbed it and took it back to their camp to inspect and photograph it, when it blew up. “It looks like the explosive charge was hidden inside of what appeared to be a battery on some sort of a timer,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the matter. A French source earlier confirmed the use of a “booby-trapped drone in Iraq,” while another confirmed that two French soldiers were hurt in the incident. One of the French soldiers has life-threatening injuries. Both have been flown back to France for treatment.  The French military declined to comment.

Headline:     Obama breaks another promise to ‘save’ the Iran deal

The Obama administration keeps on breaking its promises on the Iran deal — its promises to the American people, that is. The latest betrayal: The Treasury Department just lifted key restrictions on Iran’s ability to do business in US dollars and access world financial markets — breaking Team Obama’s explicit vows as it lobbied Congress not to nix the deal. Iran’s banks weren’t even cut off from the US financial system over the nuclear issue — but over Tehran’s funding of terrorism, its regional aggression and so on. Which makes another Treasury move even more squalid: It will now also let foreign firms and branches of US firms do business with Iranian groups like the Revolutionary Guard. The Guard is the chief conduit for Tehran’s support of terrorism, tied to numerous plots, including one in DC aimed at a Saudi envoy. And it’s also a prime force helping Syria’s Bashar al-Assad massacre civilians in his bloody bid to keep power. It was behind the kidnapping of US sailors in January, the serial harassment of US Navy ships and even last month’s arrest of another Iranian-American in Iran. Yet the Obama Treasury is making it easier for the Revolutionary Guard to do business — as part of an official US drive to boost Iran’s economy in the name of preserving the nuclear deal.

The Islamic State (IS) extremist group has claimed responsibility for an attack on a shrine in the Afghan capital, Kabul, that killed 18 people, mostly Shi’ite mourners. IS’s affiliate in Afghanistan and Pakistan — known as Khorasan Province — claimed the attack in an online statement issued on October 12. Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said 62 people, including 12 police, were wounded in the attack on the Karte Sakhi shrine, one of the largest in Kabul. He said that, contrary to earlier reports of three gunmen, only one gunman, who was later gunned down by security forces, attacked the shrine. In a statement issued on October 12, the United Nations said the “attack deliberately targeting a large group of civilians exercising their right to freely manifest their religion in worship, observance, and practice is an atrocity.” In a statement issued on October 11, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani offered his condolences to the victims and condemned the attack as a “clear sign of a crime against humanity.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel signaled support for protesters demanding wider freedoms in Ethiopia during a visit to the country on Tuesday, saying “a vibrant civil society is part and parcel of a developing country.” After meeting with Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Merkel said Germany has offered to train Ethiopia’s police to deal with the sometimes deadly demonstrations that have caused one of Africa’s best-performing economies to declare its first state of emergency in 25 years. “We are already working in Oromia to de-escalate the situation there by offering mediation between groups,” she said, referring to the region where protests have simmered for nearly a year. “I would always argue for allowing people of a different political opinion … to engage with them and allow them to express their views because, after all, a democratic experience shows that out of these discussions good solutions usually come,” Merkel said.

Headline:    US start-up Geofeedia ‘allowed police to track protesters’

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have revoked access to their data to an analytics firm accused of selling information that allowed US police to track activists and protesters. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said Chicago-based Geofeedia had allowed police to “sneak in through a side door” to monitor protests. Geofeedia said it was committed to the principles of personal privacy. It comes amid growing concern about government access to social media. ACLU said Geofeedia had been marketing its services to police agencies to help track activists using location data and social media posts. The group said it had seen internal documents in which Geofeedia said that it “covered Ferguson/Mike Brown nationally with great success,” referring to protests which erupted in 2014 after an unarmed African-American man was shot dead by police. “The ACLU of California has obtained records showing that Twitter, Facebook and Instagram provided user data access to Geofeedia, a developer of a social media monitoring product that we have seen marketed to law enforcement as a tool to monitor activists and protesters,” the group said in a statement. “We know for a fact that in Oakland [California] and Baltimore [Maryland], law enforcement has used Geofeedia to monitor protests.”

Headline:   7 killed as bombing targets taxi in northeastern Nigeria

A local official says at least seven people have been killed in an explosion targeting a taxi in northeastern Nigeria’s largest city. Bello Dambatta, an emergency response official, says six people were killed at the scene of Wednesday’s attack and another died at a hospital. He says at least four people were injured. It is unclear if a bomb had been planted on the taxi or if a passenger detonated explosives after boarding. The explosion occurred as the taxi approached a gas station. Northeastern Nigeria is the epicenter of Boko Haram’s seven-year uprising that has claimed more than 20,000 lives. Maiduguri city had been spared deadly bombings in recent months as soldiers were able to shoot suicide attackers before they reached their targets.

Headline: Brexit champ: We are seeing a ‘popular uprising against failed politics on a global scale’

There is a “growing mistrust of the political class” in both Britain and the U.S., a key player in the successful Brexit vote said. “The little people have had enough – not just here, but in America too,” Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party (Ukip), wrote in an Oct. 9 op-ed for the UK’s Telegraph. The U.S. presidential campaign “mirrors many of the arguments and conflicts that we have seen recently in British politics, especially during the recent referendum campaign. Essentially, this election is about continuity versus change, with huge doses of personal vitriol thrown in,” Farage wrote. “When I arrived at the Republican Party convention in Cleveland, Ohio, back in July, I was amazed at the reaction to me over the Brexit result. Normally we follow trends in America, not the other way round, but it was clear that many of the delegates saw Brexit as an aspiration for what they see as the Trump ‘revolution’ against the Establishment.” Farage noted that “one of the reasons that Ukip went from being an insignificant political party to winning the 2014 European elections is that we spoke about issues in a language that resonated with ordinary people.” “Like him or loathe him,” Farage pointed out, “Trump is not a part of the political elite and he most certainly is not constrained by political correctness. When I spoke at one of his rallies in Jackson, Mississippi, I saw a fanatical gathering of his fans who want to give the Establishment a good hiding. ‘We want our country back’ works as a slogan here, too.”

Headline: Kerry threatens retaliation for Russian meddling in US election

Headline: Russian Government Officials Told To Immediately Bring Back Children Studying Abroad

Russia´s military conducted a series of intercontinental ballistic missile tests on Wednesday, the latest flexing of its muscles as tensions with the US spike over Syria. Russian forces fired a nuclear-capable rocket from a Pacific Fleet submarine in the Sea of Okhotsk north of Japan, state-run RIA Novosti reported. A Topol missile was shot off from a submarine in the Barents Sea, and a third was launched from an inland site in the north-west of the vast country, Russian agencies reported. The latest display of might by Moscow — which has been conducting regular military drills since ties with the West slumped in 2014 over Ukraine — comes as tensions have shot up in recent days. Russia has pulled the plug on a series of deals with the US — including a symbolic disarmament pact between the two nuclear powers to dispose of weapons-grade plutonium — as Washington has halted talks on Syria.

Headline: RED ALERT — Get ready for a ‘severe fall’ in the stock market, HSBC says

HSBC’s technical-analysis team has thrown up the ultimate warning signal. In a note to clients released Wednesday, Murray Gunn, the head of technical analysis for HSBC, said he had become on “RED ALERT” for an imminent sell-off in stocks given the price action over the past few weeks. Gunn uses a type of technical analysis called the Elliott Wave Principle, which tracks alternating patterns in the stock market to discern investors’ behavior and possible next moves. In late September, Gunn said the stock market’s moves looked eerily similar to those just before the 1987 stock market crash. Citi’s Tom Fitzpatrick also highlighted the market’s similarities to the 1987 crash just a few days ago. On September 30, Gunn said stocks were under an “orange alert,” as they looked to him as if they had topped out. And now, given the 200-point decline for the Dow on Tuesday, Gunn thinks the drop is here.

Headline:   Displaced Nigerians Face Starvation in Maiduguri

Headline: North Korea plagued by serious levels of hunger, think tank says

The food shortage gripping northeast Nigeria is most obvious on the streets of the Borno State capital, Maiduguri. Long lines meander along the sidewalks as people wait for handouts from charities. Sometimes, the people in line become unruly. For seven years, Boko Haram militants have been at war with the Nigerian government. Sect members have targeted civilians — destroying farmland and stealing livestock. Families have fled to the cities, especially Maiduguri, which is now housing more than a million displaced people. Hunger and widespread malnutrition are the result. “Today in Maiduguri, malnutrition is way above 20 percent,” says Dr. Jarvid Ali, the emergency medical coordinator of Doctors Without Borders’ activities in Borno State. “That means in terms of the gravity of the situation, the magnitude of severe acute malnutrition, it’s really huge.” Many people cannot afford to buy food and some displaced people say the rations in the refugee camps are not enough. The food insecurity has reached famine levels and Maiduguri residents say they have noticed a rise in the number of deaths.

Headline:       Minister: Part of response to Jerusalem terror needs to be massive building in capital

Israel should build massively in Jerusalem as part of its answer to the type of terrorism that struck the capital again on Sunday morning, Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel said before Sunday’s cabinet meeting. Ariel’s comments to reporters before the weekly cabinet session came within an hour of news of the Jerusalem shooting attacks. Part of the answer to these attacks, he said, beyond the security component, “is massive building and removing from the heart of our enemies the idea that we will ever move from a united Jerusalem. That will minimize the potential for attacks in Jerusalem.” Bayit Yehudi MK Mordechai Yogev called for the cabinet to immediately permit construction, for the IDF to enter Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem, and to destroy Hamas. “Every attack requires a Zionist response of authorizing new building plans in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria,” Yogev said. “This must be accompanied by public diplomacy telling the world that the land belongs to the people of Israel who desire life, and not to terrorists who sanctify death.”

Headline:  Kerry said to tell PM that US hasn’t decided yet on UN resolution

US Secretary of State John Kerry reportedly told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the weekend that the Obama administration has not yet made a decision on whether to back a UN Security Council resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after the November presidential elections. Support for or promotion of such a resolution would mark a drastic change in policy for the US, which has consistently vetoed and/or threatened to veto any UN resolutions deemed unfavorable to Israel. In a phone conversation on Saturday night, Netanyahu told Kerry he expects that the US will not support any diplomatic measures at the UN that are carried out without Israel’s consent, Haaretz newspaper reported. The prime minister also reiterated statements he made in a speech to the UN General Assembly last month, in which he said “peace will not come from statements and resolutions at the United Nations.” But while Kerry listened to Netanyahu’s request, he told the prime minister that no decision on supporting future resolutions had yet been made, the report said. Speaking at the UN in September a day before his final official meeting with Obama, Netanyahu sought to sow opposition to a change in US policy, praising Obama for using his veto for such resolutions in the past. The phone conversation between Kerry and Netanayahu came amid a tussle between Israel and the US following Israeli approval last week of construction of new settlement housing units for the homeowners of the illegal outpost of Amona ahead of its court-ordered evacuation. The plan calls for two phases of construction, with a further 200 units to be approved after a first round of 98 homes is completed.

Headline:  Danon to UN: Why don’t you ask PA to condemn terror attack?

An East Jerusalem resident shot and killed a 60-year-old woman and a 30-year-old police officer on Sunday near the National Headquarters of the Israel Police in Jerusalem on Sunday. The drive-by shootings spanned three sites. In addition, three victims were moderately wounded, while a further three were lightly wounded by shrapnel or suffered from shock. Police eventualy shot the assailant, identified as a 39-year-old resident of the Silwan neighborhood, at nearby Sheikh Jarrah. He succumbed to his wounds shortly thereafter. Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, penned a letter to the UN Security Council, calling upon that body to demand the Palestinian Authority condemn the murder of Yosef Kirma and Levana Malichi in Jerusalem on Sunday. In his letter, Danon noted the numerous expressions of joy and celebrations by Arabs in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria following the terror attack. He also included photographs documenting the celebrations. In some cases, Arab residents were seen handing out candy and waving pictures of the terrorist. Danon argued that the Security Council must “demand that the Palestinian Authority immediately halt the incitement [against Israel] and strongly condemn the murders in Jerusalem.”

Headline:     Missiles Fired From Rebel-Held Yemen Land Near US Destroyer

Two missiles fired from rebel-held territory in Yemen landed near an American destroyer in the Red Sea, the U.S. Navy said Monday, the second such launch targeting ships in the crucial international waterway in recent days. The missile launches Sunday came as a ballistic missile fired from Yemen apparently targeted a Saudi air base near the Muslim holy city of Mecca, the deepest strike yet into the kingdom by Shiite rebels and their allies. The rebels fired another two missiles into the Saudi Jizan region along the border on Monday, wounding two foreigners who worked there, the local civil defense said in a statement.Yemen’s Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, and their allies offered no reason for the launches, though they came after a Saudi-led airstrike targeting a funeral in Yemen’s capital killed over 140 people and wounded 525 on Saturday. In a statement, the Navy said no American sailors were wounded and no damage was caused to the USS Mason, an Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyer whose home port is Norfolk, Virginia. Lt. Ian McConnaughey, a spokesman for U.S. Navy Forces Central Command, said that it’s unclear if the USS Mason was specifically targeted, though the missiles were fired in its direction over an hour’s time, starting at around 7 p.m.

Headline:  Allies Saudi Arabia, Egypt in rare public spat over Syria

Close allies and Arab powerhouses Egypt and Saudi Arabia are having their first public spat since Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi took office two years ago, a quarrel over Syria that points to a wider, but mostly muted, divergence in the handling by Cairo and Riyadh of regional issues. The two countries have gone to great lengths to shield their differences from the public eye, often emphasizing their closes ties and cooperation. But Egypt’s vote in favor of separate Russian and French draft resolutions on Syria at the UN Security Council over the weekend has apparently angered the Saudis. Egypt’s UN Ambassador Amr Aboulatta, the Arab representative on the council, defended his support for both drafts, saying his country backed all efforts to stop the suffering of the Syrians. Russia vetoed the French resolution demanding an immediate halt of the bombing by Russia and the Syrian government of rebel-held areas in the northern city of Aleppo.

Syria Headline:       Russia vetoes U.N. demand for end to bombing of Syria’s Aleppo

Russia vetoed a French-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution on Saturday that would have demanded an end to air strikes and military flights over Syria’s city of Aleppo, while a rival Russian draft text failed to get a minimum nine votes in favor. Moscow’s text was effectively the French draft with Russian amendments. It removed the demand for an end to air strikes on Aleppo and put the focus back on a failed Sept. 9 U.S./Russia ceasefire deal, which was annexed to the draft. British U.N. Ambassador Matthew Rycroft told Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin: “Thanks to your actions today, Syrians will continue to lose their lives in Aleppo and beyond to Russian and Syrian bombing. Please stop now.” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, backed by Russian war planes and Iranian support, have been battling to capture eastern Aleppo, the rebel-held half of Syria’s largest city, where more than 250,000 civilians are trapped. “Russia has become one of the chief purveyors of terror in Aleppo, using tactics more commonly associated with thugs than governments,” U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations David Pressman told the council.

Syria Headline:    Russia to create permanent naval base in Syria

Russia intends to establish a permanent naval base on the site of an existing facility it leases at the Syrian port of Tartus, Russian Deputy Defence Minister Nikolai Pankov said on Monday, Russian news agencies reported. Pankov’s statement is the latest sign that Moscow wants to expand its military footprint in Syria where it has been helping President Bashar al-Assad fight rebels since 2015. Moscow last week deployed S-300 surface-to air missiles to Tartus. “We will have a permanent naval base at Tartus,” Pankov told Russian senators. “The necessary documents are already prepared and are in the process of being approved by different agencies. We hope we can ask you to ratify these documents soon.” Senator Igor Morozov told the RIA news agency that the decision would allow Russia to operate more ships in the Mediterranean as they would have an enhanced facility at which they could refuel and resupply. “By doing this Russia is not only increasing its military potential in Syria but in the entire Middle East and in the Mediterranean region as a whole,” said Morozov. Russia already has a permanent air base at Hmeymim in Syria’s Latakia province from which it launches air strikes against anti-Assad rebels.

Syria Headline:  Syrian Forces Push Through Rebel-Held Eastern Aleppo

Syrian government forces continued their offensive on rebel-held eastern Aleppo, after the U.N. Security Council failed to pass a resolution Saturday on a truce to end the deadly bombing of the city. Regime forces and their allies were advancing street by street in the eastern sector of Aleppo, which had been out of government control since 2012, the British-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, adding that regime forces took control of the Jandul crossroads in the northeast of the city. The Observatory said 290 civilians have died in artillery bombardment of eastern districts and 50 civilians have died in rebel bombardment of regime-controlled western districts in the past two weeks. The Damascus daily newspaper Al-Watan, which is close to the government, said the latest advance is aiming to clear the way for “a crucial and decisive land offensive.”

Iraq Headline:          D-day looms for Mosul battle but questions remain

More than two years after the fall of Mosul to the Islamic State, the battle to liberate Iraq’s second-largest city appears imminent. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in September that he expected the military offensive in Mosul to begin in October, although in later pronouncements he said he would decide at “the last minute” when to give the go-ahead. British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said the operation to liberate Mosul would begin “within weeks” and French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said, “There will soon be the main attack.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the military offensive would begin Oct. 19. Iraqi officials said they expected the liberation to be swift and uncomplicated. Observers, however, said they fear complications during and after the liberation of Mosul. Reports from Mosul indicate that IS has tightened its grip on the civilian population it is holding hostage in the city and is not expected to leave without bloodshed, booby traps and “tunnels of fire.”

Ten Turkish soldiers and eight civilians were killed Sunday when suspected Kurdish militants detonated a car bomb outside a military checkpoint in Hakkari province in southeast Turkey. Headline:     Russians and Saudis Pledge Joint Effort to Limit Oil Production

Turkey and Russia on Monday signed a deal to build a gas pipeline from Russia as the two countries pressed ahead with efforts to normalize ties. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan watched as their countries’ energy ministers sealed an intergovernmental agreement for the “Turkish Stream” project that would bring gas from Russia to Turkey. It would then be distributed to European Union nations. The project, which had previously been suspended amid tensions between the two countries, was signed on the sidelines of the World Energy Congress. In other steps aimed at restoring ties, Putin announced that Russia had agreed to a natural gas discount to Turkey and would resume importing fruit, vegetables and other agricultural goods from the country. The two countries would intensify defense contacts and also look into cooperation in space technologies. Russia is building Turkey’s first nuclear power plant, and Erdogan said the sides agreed to accelerate the project. “I am convinced that the process of normalization of our ties will continue rapidly,” Erdogan told reporters during a joint news conference. “Our relations will (improve) in many fields, be it in defense industry, political, economic, trade, tourism or culture.” “We will make up for lost time in the coming days,” Erdogan said.

A suicide car bombing killed 14 people, including 10 Afghan police officers, as the Taliban launched a large-scale attack Monday on the capital in southern Helmand province, the heartland of the insurgency. Since the beginning of this year’s fighting season, the Taliban have expanded their footprint across most of the province and have been at the gates of the city of Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital, for weeks. According to Haji Marjan, police chief of Nad Ali district who has been deployed to the city, the explosion happened around 11.30 a.m., after the Taliban earlier targeted police checkpoints across Lashkar Gah. Marjan said at least 10 police officers, including his brother, and four civilians died in the bombing in the Mukhtar area of police district 2. He warned the death toll was likely to rise as it was unclear how many people remain unaccounted for after the explosion. A doctor at the city’s international emergency hospital said 14 bodies were brought to the clinic. Speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media, the physician said 15 wounded were also brought in, including 14 victims of the car bombing and one person who suffered gunshot wounds. |

Headline:        Ethiopia declares state of emergency amid protests

Ethiopia has declared a state of emergency following months of anti-government protests by members of the country’s two largest ethnic groups. The Oromo and the Amhara make up about 60% of the population. They complain power is held by a tiny Tigrean elite. Violence has intensified since last Sunday when at least 55 people were killed in clashes between police and protesters at an Oromo festival. Hundreds have died in months of protests, human rights groups say. Tens of thousands have also been detained, they say. Declaring the state of emergency, Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said in a televised address: “We put our citizens’ safety first. Besides, we want to put an end to the damage that is being carried out against infrastructure projects, education institutions, health centres, administration and justice buildings.” The state of emergency will last for six months.

Headline:  South Sudan says rebels kill 21 civilians in ambush

Rebels attacked trucks carrying civilians in South Sudan, killing 21 people, the government said, as violence between rival forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and his former vice president risks dragging the country back into civil war. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said in a statement on Monday it had received reports of horrific violence being perpetrated against civilians in Central Equatorial State and urged both rebel and government commanders to control their forces. The government said on Monday 21 civilians were killed, some burned to death, and about 20 wounded when rebel gunmen ambushed their vehicles on a road connecting Yei town, in Central Equatorial State, to the capital Juba on Saturday. Jacob Lem Chan, a local government official, said four trucks were ambushed and victims were burned and shot at. “These are SPLA-IO force … who laid the ambush,” Chan said, referring to former vice president Riek Machar’s rebel movement. “We have confirmed 21 dead, and about 20 casualties were admitted in the hospital,” Chan said, adding one truck was burnt with victims inside.

Headline:  Libyan forces push into last ISIS area in Sirte

Libyan pro-government forces are advancing into the last area controlled by ISIS in the coastal city of Sirte, surrounding the militants after a five-month campaign backed by US air strikes, military officials say. At least eight pro-government fighters were killed over the weekend as their forces pushed into the 600 block, an area in central Sirte, with snipers and boobytraps posing the main obstacles to their advance, the officials said. A Reuters reporter on the ground said forces advanced across two streets on Sunday, but were facing resistance and discovering explosive devices in many buildings. The advance is being led by the Bonyan Marsous forces, mainly fighters from the city of Misrata, who are supporting a United Nations-backed unity government in Tripoli that is trying to bring together rival factions. “The forces of Bonyan Marsous made some advances and completely trapped the 600 block area in Sirte,” Misrata forces media official Ali Almabrouk said. Mohamed Ghasri, a spokesman for pro-government forces, said two female militants had escaped with their three children and surrendered. They told Misrata forces they did not want to be used in suicide attacks, Ghasri said. The fall of a major city to one of the country’s most powerful factions is rekindling tensions with rival brigades in the east, led by Khalifa Haftar, who has rejected the authority of the UN-backed government in Tripoli. In a major advance, Haftar has taken control of eastern oil ports and his troops have advanced close to Sirte. Many in the west of Libya believe Haftar is planning to establish himself as a military strongman like Gaddafi. His backers in the east see him as the only one who has fought for their interests, especially against Islamist militants.

Headline:  Islamist Benkirane tasked to form new Morocco government

The Islamist party which has headed Morocco’s coalition government since Arab Spring-inspired protests five years ago has beaten liberal rivals in parliamentary elections, results showed Saturday. Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane’s Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD) took 125 seats out of 395, the interior ministry said after all ballots were counted. Its main rival, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), which had campaigned against the “Islamisation” of Moroccan society, won 102 seats, the ministry said. Istiqlal, the party which historically fought for independence from France, came third with 45 seats. In any case, the real power will remain in the hands of King Mohammed VI, the scion of a monarchy that has ruled the North African country for 350 years. Interior Minister Mohamed Hassad said that the election was “transparent” and had gone well, rejecting accusations of voter fraud from both sides.

A collision between a truck driven by an Egyptian and a vehicle carrying three US soldiers in Kuwait was a “terrorist attack,” not an accident as first thought, the embassy confirmed Sunday. “US Embassy in Kuwait confirms that what at first appeared to be a routine traffic accident involving three deployed US military personnel… was in fact an attempted terrorist attack,” the mission said in a statement posted on its website. The statement said the attack took place on Thursday and that the US soldiers escaped unhurt. The soldiers also rescued the Egyptian driver when his truck caught fire, it said. Anxious to quell anti-India protests in Kashmir, Indian forces are carrying out their most severe crackdown in more than two decades against civilian protesters, arresting more than 8,000 this summer across the disputed Himalayan territory, police said Monday. That includes 450 or so civilians being held, possibly for up to six months without trial, under a harsh security law criticized as a human-rights violation. India has said the separatist rebels – and civilians who help them – are undermining the country’s territorial integrity and forcing authorities to keep the India-controlled portion of Kashmir under tight control. “This is, so far, the biggest crackdown against miscreants,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to share details of the crackdown.

Headline:  Nine police officers killed in attacks in Myanmar

Nine police officers were killed and four wounded when a group of 90 assailants raided a police station and others attacked a border control post in western Myanmar, near the border with Bangladesh. State officials said they believed the assailants were members of the Muslim minority in the state of Rakhine, where the attacks took place Sunday. There are more than 1 million members of the Muslim Rohingya ethnic group living in the state. Most have been denied citizenship in Myanmar, formerly Burma, and Myanmar has refused to recognize them as an ethnic group, insisting they are ethnic Bengalis. The attacks began early Sunday morning when the group of 90 men stormed the police station in Maungdow Township, killing six police officers, wounding two others, and seizing a large number of weapons. One police officer was killed and two wounded in a second attack, taking place at the same time, on a police border patrol camp in Rathidaung Township. Two more police officers were killed and one missing after a third attack a couple of hours later in Buthidaung Township. Seven of the attackers were reportedly killed in that attack.

Russia has deployed nuclear-capable Iskander missiles in its western-most region, Kaliningrad, which borders on Nato members Poland and Lithuania. Poland said the development was of the “highest concern”, adding it was monitoring the situation. Russia’s defence ministry said the new deployment was part of military exercises and had happened before. The US and Nato have seen disagreements with Russia intensify in recent times, particularly over Syria and Ukraine. Kaliningrad is a Russian enclave sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania. The Iskander system has a range of up to 700km (440 miles) and could reach the German capital, Berlin. Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz called Russia’s activities “very alarming”. And a US intelligence official told Reuters the move could be to express displeasure at Nato. Nato is boosting its eastern flank by deploying four battalions in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia next year.

Headline: Nearly 7 in 10 Americans have less than $1,000 in savings

The U.S. is often referred to as the land of economic opportunity. Apparently, it’s also the land of consumption and “spend everything you’ve got.” We don’t have to look far for confirmation that Americans are generally poor savers. Every month the St. Louis Federal Reserve releases data on personal household savings rates. In July 2016, the personal savings rate was just 5.7%. Comparatively, personal savings rates in the U.S. 50 years ago were double where they are today, and nearly all developed countries have a higher personal savings rate than the United States. In other words, Americans are saving less of their income than they should be — the recommendation is to save between 10% and 15% of your annual income — and they’re being forced to do more with less in terms of investing. However, new data emerged this week from personal-finance news website GoBankingRates that shows just how dire Americans’ savings habits really are. Last year, GoBankingRates surveyed more than 5,000 Americans only to uncover that 62% of them had less than $1,000 in savings. Last month GoBankingRates again posed the question to Americans of how much they had in their savings account, only this time it asked 7,052 people. The result? Nearly seven in 10 Americans (69%) had less than $1,000 in their savings account.

Headline:  China must wean itself off debt addiction if it is to avoid financial calamity, warns IMF chief

China is edging towards “financial calamity” and must wean itself off its debt addiction and reform if it is to avoid a crisis, the International Monetary Fund has warned. Markus Rodlauer, deputy director of the IMF’s Asia-Pacific department, said the world’s second largest economy was approaching a tipping point where its rapidly growing financial sector and surge in shadow credit could undermine the state’s ability to contain the fallout from a crash. “The level of financial and corporate debt and the complexity of the financial system and rapid growth in shadow banking is on an unsustainable path,” he said. “While still manageable in its size given the size of the public assets under public control, the trend is dangerous and if it’s not corrected it will lead to a correction. “The longer it lasts … the more serious the disturbance and the disruption might be. [The reaction could range] from a mild growth slowdown, to a sharp slowdown in growth to potentially a financial crisis.” Data show credit and financial sector leverage in China has continued to rise much faster than economic growth. The IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook said debt in China was rising at a “dangerous pace”, while its Financial Stability Report showed small Chinese banks were heavily exposed to shadow credit as a share of capital buffers, with exposure reaching nearly 600pc at some banks.

Headline:  Bees placed on endangered species list — a first in the US 10-1

In a first for bees in the nation, seven bee species native to Hawaii are now protected under the Endangered Species Act. The US Fish and Wildlife Service said it added the yellow-faced bee species to the federal list of endangered species Friday night after years of research concluded they are under threat. The rule is effective October 31. Bees pollinate plants producing fruit, nuts and vegetables, and are crucial for the nation’s food industry. They have declined sharply in recent years due to various factors, including habitat loss, pesticides, wildfires and loss of genetic diversity. “Native pollinators in the US provide essential pollination services to agriculture which are valued at more than $9 billion annually,” said Eric Lee-Mäder, pollinator program co-director at the Xerces Society, which was involved in petitions calling for the protection of the bee species. During pollination, insects, birds and bats transfer pollen between plants, which allows them to make seeds and reproduce. Listing the bees allows authorities to provide recovery programs and get funding for protection.

Headline:  Believe it or not, the bees are doing just fine

You’ve probably heard the bad news by now that bees were recently added to the endangered species list for the first time. But if you’re part of the 60 percent of people who share stories without actually reading them, you might have missed an important detail: namely, that the newly endangered bees are a handful of relatively obscure species who live only in Hawaii. The bees you’re more familiar with — the ones that buzz around your yard dipping into flowers, making honey, pollinating crops and generally keeping the world’s food supply from collapsing? Those bees are doing just fine, according to data released by the USDA this year. In 2015, there were 2.66 million commercial honey-producing bee colonies in the United States. That’s down slightly from the 2.74 million colonies in 2014, which represented a two-decade high. The number of commercial bee colonies is still significantly higher than it was in 2006, when colony collapse disorder — the mass die-offs that began afflicting U.S. honeybee colonies — was first documented.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/10/10/believe-it-or-not-the-bees-are-doing-just-fine/

noteYou’ll notice that there are 2 seemingly contradictory stories above.  The first you read scares you, then you read the 2nd and feel better because – well after all- it IS only Hawaii. That’s ok.  That is exactly what the Post story is meant to do. Make you feel better (notice they began by talking about the 60% who don’t read the story & you instantly feel guilty?).

It’s meant to distract you.  To make you stop worrying about bees dying and in turn NOT worry about food disappearing.  Most of us day to day only think about food (the having and getting) in terms of money, not bees (see today’s story in Economy).  So what is the big deal?

Well ANY bee dying is noteworthy.  God created them ALL for a specific purpose and we understand- food or not- bees are essential to the planet.  Any ‘peace’ about this event should come from God alone, not the Post.  It IS a problem (see ETRM bee archive).  We can face it because God has told us in Zephaniah this would happen, so Christians are more prepared.  God has this- He knows.  The entire point being: search for peace no longer on this earth.  The only true peace comes from Yeshua.

Headline:  Young couples are holding ‘vasectomy parties’ to celebrate the start of a childless family, and ask guests to name their CAR instead

Call it a sign of the times. More couples these days want to avoid parenthood and embrace life without children. So some are marking the start of their childless families with ‘vasectomy parties.’ One couple posted a Reddit bulletin announcing that they were inviting friends to revel in the fun of being sterilized. The invitation calls on attendees to live it up in ‘a house filled with sharp furniture and exposed outlets,’ the Sun reported. Instead of the traditional baby shower, couples also invite friends to ‘car showers’ where guests help them name their new car. They also play board games like The Price Is Right, where they talk about what they can buy now that they’ve saved money by not having kids. ‘Absolutely brilliant!,’ one Reddit user replied. ‘Made me LOL, especially the wording on the invitation, the clever cake, and the advent calendar! Congratulations, by the way and have a happy childfree life!’ ‘All a baby shower is a party to celebrate that you had sex,’ wrote another user. ‘That a sperm managed to hit a fertile egg. A vasectomy shower is a party to celebrate soon to be sex.’ The trend has become so pronounced that one couple posted a blog that they proudly named ‘WereNotHavingABaby.com.’ ‘After six years of having looked forward to becoming a caring and all-out stimulating and dynamic mother at some indeterminate point in the near future, I suddenly realised that this wasn’t the only possible narrative for my life,’ one woman known as Stefani posted on the blog. ‘I had swallowed the motherhood mandate hook, line, and sinker and I had never given myself the space and time to question whether I really, really want children.’ ‘Our society is all about celebrating traditional milestones,’ Amy Blackstone, one of the blog’s authors, told the New York Post. ‘You graduate, you get married, you have a child. But that’s a very narrow path and isn’t indicative of many people’s experiences.’ ‘So why not decide to celebrate your choice to not have a child?’

Headline:   NY Times: UN Security Council should set Israeli-Palestinian peace terms

The New York Times, in an unusual move, has called on the United Nations Security Council to set the parameters for a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.
“The best idea under discussion now would be to have the United Nations Security Council, in an official resolution, lay down guidelines for a peace agreement covering such issues as Israel’s security, the future of Jerusalem, the fate of Palestinian refugees and borders for both states,” the paper’s Editorial Board stated. The paper’s editorial, published Thursday, further called on US President Barack Obama to lead the charge at the UNSC. “The most plausible pressure would come from Mr. Obama’s leading the Security Council to put its authority behind a resolution to support a two-state solution and offer the outlines of what that could be. “That may seem like a bureaucratic response unlikely to change anything, but it is the kind of political pressure Mr. Netanyahu abhors and has been working assiduously to prevent,” the New York Times wrote. It issued its editorial just one week before the United Nations Security Council on October 14th is due to hold a public debate, known as an Arria Formula meeting, on Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank and Jewish building in east Jerusalem.

The UN Security Council will hold a special meeting next week on Israeli construction in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem, Haaretz reported Thursday. The Arria Formula meeting will not involve a vote and is expected to be open to the media, according to the newspaper. Foreign Ministry officials in Jerusalem fear it will turn into an international demonstration of condemnation of the Israeli government’s policy and set the stage for an “anti-settlement resolution” in the Security Council after the upcoming U.S. elections. The meeting will be held on October 14 at the behest of Egypt, Venezuela, Malaysia, Senegal and Angola, with a push from the Palestinians. Arria Formula meetings allow all council members to initiate debates on subjects of specific interest to them. While attendance is not mandatory, Jerusalem officials told Haaretz they believe all Security Council members will attend the meeting, stressing that the Palestinians and the host nations succeeded in exceptional fashion to open the session to the press.

Headline:      Ghajar residents planned to carry out attack using weapons they smuggled from Hezbollah in Lebanon

Six people were charged Thursday for planning to carry out a terror attack in the northern Israeli city of Haifa using explosives they received from the Lebanese-based militant group Hezbollah, the Shin Bet security service said. Three brothers and a cousin are among the defendants, who are all residents of the village of Ghajar, an Alawite-Arab village on the Hasbani River on the border between Lebanon and the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. Israel Police said that along with the Shin Bet it had prevented a terrorist attack after revealing the infrastructure that was used as a route to smuggle drugs and weapons from the Lebanese border into Israel. “An investigation began in late July after a farmer found a bag containing two explosive devices in an open area off Highway 90 near the northern town of Metulla,” police said. The explosive devices were examined by the police and it was revealed that the origin of the bag was from the other side of the border, which indicated that Hezbollah was involved. Part of the investigation showed that the bag had been smuggled from Lebanon by a number of suspects from Ghajar. All of the suspects are currently in custody, and on Thursday they were indicted of the following crimes: espionage, aiding the enemy during war, import and export of weapons, contacting a foreign agent and drug dealing.

Syria Headline:     UN to vote on Aleppo truce, face Russian veto

The Russian government is ratcheting up warnings – on Twitter – to the U.S. government not to interfere with its military operations in Syria, even suggesting American aircraft could be targeted by its “air defense systems.” In a provocative tweet Wednesday, the Russian embassy in Washington posted a side-by side photo of White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest and the Russian S-300 missile system. With the military apparatus pointed toward the image of Earnest, a caption says Russia wants the system because they “never really know what kind of assistance terrorists might get.” The tweet says Russia will take “every defensive measure necessary” to protect their personnel in Syria. The tweet comes after the U.S. and Russia suspended direct talks over Syria operations — and amid heightened tensions between the two countries over the bloody civil war in which Vladimir Putin’s forces are backing Bashar Assad while the U.S. tries to focus on taking out ISIS.

Syria Headline:     Kerry Calls for War Crimes Probe Into Russian Activity in Syria

German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Russia on Friday to use its influence with the Syrian government to end the devastating bombardment of Aleppo, as her government opened the door to possible sanctions against Russia for its role in the conflict. In some of her harshest comments to date, Merkel said there was no basis in international law for bombing hospitals and Moscow should use its influence with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to end the bombing of civilians. “Russia has a lot of influence on Assad. We must end these atrocious crimes,” Merkel told party members in Magdeburg. She did not address sanctions directly, but said the international community needed to do all it could to bring about a halt in the fighting and get supplies to civilians. Merkel’s chief spokesman Steffen Seibert, speaking at a regular news conference, declined to rule out possible sanctions against Russia for its part in the conflict, but said Berlin’s top priority remained a ceasefire to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population. Seibert said Western officials discussed the Syrian conflict in Berlin on Wednesday and those discussions were continuing.

Syria Headline:    Syria opposition calls for UN envoy to resign

Syria Headline:     Syrian Jihadists rebuff UN envoy’s proposal to leave Aleppo under escort

The Syrian Interim Government has called on Staffan de Mistura to step down, saying that the UN envoy has sided with the Bashar al-Assad regime’s narrative on the critical situation in Aleppo. “We demand the resignation of the UN’s envoy [to Syria]… and we declare that we have stopped all forms of communication and cooperation with him and his staff,” the political body, which was formed in 2013 by the Syrian National Coalition, announced in a statement. “Instead of condemning the aggression [against Aleppo], he sided with the story of the [regime] in Damascus and the Russian occupier,” the Interim Government said, claiming that de Mistura’s recent remarks “gave them justification to continue their aggression.” On Thursday, de Mistura offered to personally accompany all fighters from Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, the rebranded version of the Al-Nusra Front, from Aleppo, saying that the Islamist group was, in effect, holding “hostage” the civilian population of east Aleppo, which has come under intense aerial bombardment following the collapse of a US-Russia brokered cessation of hostilities in late September. The UN envoy’s proposal was predicated on his hope that the Syrian regime would cease bombarding the encircled rebel half of Aleppo if Jabhat Fatah al-Sham fighters left the city. De Mistura also warned that eastern Aleppo could be “totally destroyed” in the coming weeks if the regime shelling of the city continues.

Syria Headline:  Assad offers rebels amnesty if they surrender Aleppo

Syria Headline:  All eastern Aleppo hospitals reported to be damaged in attacks

Rebels holed up in Aleppo can leave with their families if they lay down their arms, President Bashar al-Assad said on Thursday, vowing to press on with the assault on Syria’s largest city and recapture full control of the country. The offer of amnesty follows two weeks of the heaviest bombardment of the five-and-a-half-year civil war, which has killed hundreds of people trapped inside Aleppo’s rebel-held eastern sector and torpedoed a U.S.-backed peace initiative. Fighters have accepted similar government amnesty offers in other besieged areas in recent months, notably in Daraya, a suburb of Damascus that was under siege for years until rebels surrendered it in August. However, rebels said they had no plan to evacuate Aleppo, the last major urban area they control, and denounced the amnesty offer as a deception. “It’s impossible for the rebel groups to leave Aleppo because this would be a trick by the regime,” Zakaria Malahifji, a Turkey-based official for the Fastaqim group which is present in Aleppo, told Reuters. “Aleppo is not like other areas, it’s not possible for them to surrender.” Washington was also skeptical of government motives: “For them to suggest that somehow they’re now looking out for the interests of civilians is outrageous,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, citing the heavy civilian toll from air strikes and bombardment.

Syria Headline:  Syrian Army fights off ISIS offensive at the gates of Palmyra

Just six months after the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) liberated Palmyra, Syrian government troops now find themselves under increased ISIS attacks as the Islamic State leadership hopes to recapture the ancient city and score a symbolic victory. On Friday morning, just a few kilometers southeast of Palmyra, SAA forces repelled an ISIS assault, destroyed two technicals (light vehicles) and inflicted approximately 10 casualties upon jihadist fighters at the Al-Talilah zone. Furthermore, Syrian government soldiers managed to kill an ISIS driver who unsuccessfully tried to reach a SAA checkpoint and detonate a car bomb at Qasr Al-Habr, south of Palmyra.

Iraq Headline:    Iraq ready to battle occupying Turkish forces near ISIS-held Mosul

Iraq has requested an emergency UN Security Council session over the presence of Turkish troops in northern Iraq, a foreign ministry spokesman said Thursday, a development that highlights increasing tension between the two neighbours. Turkey, however, remained defiant, with Prime Minister Binali Yildirim vowing on Thursday to maintain Turkish troop presence “no matter what Baghdad says”. Turkey-Iraq relations became strained after Ankara sent troops late last year to the region of Bashiqa, northeast of Mosul, to train anti-Daesh fighters there — a move Baghdad labelled a “blatant violation” of its sovereignty. Iraq has demanded a Turkish withdrawal but Ankara has ignored the call.

Kurdish Headline:  Kurdish group close to PKK claim Istanbul bombing: website

A radical Kurdish group with ties to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) claimed responsibility on Friday for a motorbike bombing near an Istanbul police station. The claim by the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK) for Thursday’s bombing came after Turkish police detained a suspected female militant from the PKK, who is believed to have perpetrated the bombing. At least 10 people were wounded when a bomb which authorities said was attached to a motorbike exploded in the Yenibosna district of Istanbul, close to the city’s main international airport. Television pictures showed several cars wrecked and glass scattered across the ground after the blast.

Kurdish Headline:  EU report expresses concerns over increasing racist violence against Kurds in Turkey

A media outlet affiliated with the ruling Kurdish authorities in northern Syria has raised concerns over recent Turkish military activity across the border from a de-facto autonomous Kurdish region in the northwest of the war-torn country. In an article entitled “Unprecedented Turkish military movements along Afrin’s border,” the ANHA news agency claimed Thursday that Ankara was undertaking unusual maintenance work on a railway leading into Syria that has been out of service since 2012. Local sources in the Afrin Canton told ANHA that the Turkish military for the pays three days has been working to “restore” the railroad outside the Syrian border village of Meidan Ekbis, which was once one of the stops along the train routes that stretched from Istanbul to Damascus as well as Baghdad. Meanwhile, a source in Turkey said that the Turkish army “conducted full maintenance on the railway” running from the town of Islahiye,  adding that a “number of concrete panels” in a wall running across the railroad tracks were removed “at the border near the village of Meidan Ekbis.”

Kurdish Headline:  Kurdish security chief calls for deal on post-ISIS administration of Mosul

Masrour Barzani, the Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council, said on Wednesday that a post-ISIS management deal for Mosul should be completed “before it’s too late.” The Kurdish security chief, met with the US Deputy Head of Mission in Baghdad Stephanie Williams on Wednesday to discuss Iraq’s challenges ahead of major offensives planned against ISIS in Hawija and Mosul. After the meeting, Barzani warned of future problems in Mosul. “[We] must contextualize Iraq’s war as part of ethnic, religious and political differences, and address root-causes of problems to win the peace,” Barzani said. “Problems will resurface once Mosul’s liberated. It’s easier to reach a post-management deal now whilst the parties need each other.” Barzani’s statement indicates that although a military plan might be ready for Mosul, there is no concrete plan yet for the post-ISIS administration of the city.

Headline:  Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA)

The Turkish government is working with Saudi Arabia to examine measures to face the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), that was voted in by the US Congress last month, Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper has reported. In an interview with the Saudi newspaper, Turkish Development Minister, Lutfi Elvan, said his country was looking at the legalities to respond to the controversial JASTA legislation, through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and with the support of some European countries, the report added. “We cannot accept this law, which contradicts international principles and values,” Elvan told the newspaper, adding that a whole country “cannot be accused of terrorism because of some attempts perpetrated by terrorists during the events of September 11, 2001.” Elvan pledged Turkey’s support for Saudi Arabia on the matter, and said such a law would directly harm the United States. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, he added, had already described JASTA as a big mistake and announced his support to the Kingdom. The Turkish minister said he believed Saudi and turkey were targeted because they both supported peace and ‘contribute to the establishment of security and stability in the region’ the report added. Elvan has been in Saudi where he arrived earlier in the week on an official visit, the newspaper added.

Afghan officials say the Taliban are still managing to hold out in the northern city of Kunduz as fighting there continues for the fifth day since the insurgents launched an all-out assault. Gen. Qasim Jungalbagh, provincial police chief, said on Friday that government forces advanced overnight, pushing Taliban insurgents from residential areas in the east and west. Jungalbagh says five members of the security forces were killed and another seven wounded. He says three civilians were also killed. The head of the provincial council, Mohammad Yusouf Ayubi, says people are continuing to leave for neighboring provinces. The U.N.’s humanitarian agency has warned of a looming humanitarian crisis as food and water run short. The attack began Monday, a year after the insurgents overran the city.

Headline:         Ethiopian protesters attack factories in Africa’s rising economic star

Protesters in Ethiopia damaged almost a dozen mostly foreign-owned factories and flower farms and destroyed scores of vehicles this week, adding economic casualties to a rising death toll in a wave of unrest over land grabs and rights. The violence has cast a shadow over a nation where a state-led industrial drive has created one of Africa’s fastest growing economies, but where the government has also faced rising international criticism and popular opposition to its authoritarian approach to development. The flare-up followed the death of at least 55 people in a stampede on Sunday when police fired tear gas and shot into the air to disperse demonstrators in the Oromiya region near the capital. It raises to more than 450 the number of people rights groups and opponents say have been killed in unrest since 2015. A U.S. researcher was killed on Tuesday when her car was attacked by stone-throwers near Addis Ababa.

At least 22 soldiers were killed in Niger on Thursday when unknown assailants attacked a camp for Malian refugees, the West African nation’s Prime Minister Brigi Rafini said. The attack targeted a camp in the village of Tassalit in Niger’s Tahoua region, around 525 km (326 miles) northeast of the capital Niamey. “We received information of an attack on the camp in Tassalit. For the moment we are told there are 22 dead, but that is not a total death toll,” he said in comments broadcast on state-run television TeleSahel. “The death toll could increase.” Rafini gave no further information concerning the suspected identities of the attackers or whether any civilians had been killed or wounded. Niger’s small army is currently battling Boko Haram militants who launch raids across its southern border from Nigeria while seeking to prevent an overflow of attacks from Mali.

Headline:     Germany moves to run its own EU army – leaving both Brussels & NATO in new crisis

Despite Britain’s move to block an EU army, a growing number of experts believe a recent German defense paper shows Berlin has ambitions to run an EU army, and has a plan to cut through Brussels red tape and create one by itself. But at what cost to NATO? While EU defense ministers openly discuss with NATO chiefs how to create an EU army, many might think the haste for the EU to go ahead with such a grandiose plan stems from its own credibility being at an all-time low in the wake of Brexit. For EU federalists in Brussels, there is indeed some truth in this. But Brussels is also worried about being left behind or dwarfed by Germany’s own plans which would leave the EU in a weak position to negotiate who gets to call the shots in an official EU army, when it is finally created. And the EU has good reason to worry. Germany is impatient and is looking to position itself as the military leader of a coalition of EU countries which would no longer take orders from NATO, but also would not necessarily even be part of an official EU army.

Headline:       Philippines tells US no joint patrols in South China Sea

The Philippine defense chief said Friday he told the US military that plans for joint patrols and naval exercises in the disputed South China Sea have been put on hold, the first concrete break in defense cooperation after months of increasingly strident comments by the country’s new president. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana also said that 107 US troops involved in operating surveillance drones against Muslim militants would be asked to leave the southern part of the country once the Philippines acquires those intelligence-gathering capabilities in the near future. According to Lorenzana, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who in recent weeks has become increasingly outspoken and hostile against the US, also wants to halt the 28 military exercises that are carried out with US forces each year. Duterte has said he wants an ongoing US-Philippine amphibious beach landing exercise to be the last in his six-year presidency, as he backs away from what he views as too much dependence on the US. “This year would be the last,” Duterte said of military exercises involving the Americans in a speech on Friday.

Facebook has been in talks for months with U.S. government officials and wireless carriers with an eye toward unveiling an American version of an app that has caused controversy abroad, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. The social media giant is trying to determine how to roll out its program, known as Free Basics, in the United States without triggering the regulatory scrutiny that effectively killed a version of the app in India earlier this year. If Facebook succeeds with its U.S. agenda for Free Basics — which has not been previously reported — it would mark a major victory for the company as it seeks to connect millions more to the Web, and to its own platform.

Headline:  Pound-Dollar Parity Is Now a Possibility for Options Traders

What was close to unthinkable for the pound before the Brexit vote is now firmly on some traders’ minds. They’re betting sterling will tumble to parity with the dollar, a level unseen in the U.K. currency’s history. In recent days, a number of wagers were put on for a one-for-one exchange rate, according to Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. data. The pound, which had already been struggling this week amid growing talk of a so-called hard Brexit, plunged 6.1 percent in Asian hours on Friday to a 31-year low of $1.1841. The slump has made the possibility of a historic $1 level more real: a Bloomberg forecasting model, based on implied volatility, shows about a 7 percent chance of it happening within a year, compared with 3.2 percent yesterday.

Hunger is expected to reach emergency levels by the end of the year in drought-hit southern Madagascar, where many families have already been forced to sell their homes or land, or migrate, the World Food Program (WFP) has warned. At least 1 million people need food and cash aid, and some 200,000 pregnant women and children under five need treatment for acute hunger, the U.N. agency said. Four out of nine districts in the southern tip of the country are likely to fall to emergency hunger levels by the end of the year, according to preliminary results of a food assessment carried by out by WFP and other agencies.
