Headline:      Israel to build underground wall beneath Gaza border to thwart Hamas tunnels – report

Israel is planning to build a massive concrete wall which will extend below ground along the Gaza Strip border, Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper has revealed. The barrier is aimed at combating the threat posed by Hamas tunnels crossing into the country from Gaza. The wall, which will stretch along the 96km (60 mile) border around the Gaza Strip, will extend several dozen meters below the ground, and will also be present above the ground. It is estimated to cost US$568 million. The costly plan – aimed at tackling Hamas terror tunnels – was cleared for publication by Israel’s military censor, according to Ynet, a website affiliated with Yedioth Ahronoth. The wall will be the third defense system of its kind to be erected along the border.

Headline:   Palestinians begin sea border talks with Egypt

The Palestinians have begun talks with Egypt on setting out the maritime borders of their hoped for future state and the resources they can extract from the sea, their UN ambassador to the United Nations said Friday. The goal is to establish an exclusive economic zone off the coast of the Gaza Strip under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, said ambassador Ryad Mansour. The Palestinians became party to this and other UN treaties and agencies when they gained observer status at the United Nations in November 2012. The talks with Egypt are at the preliminary stage, having begun recently with Egypt at the foreign minister level and then continued at the expert level, the ambassador said. The Palestinian Authority has consulted “top lawyers in the field” to prepare its case and train its officials in the workings of maritime law, he added. The Palestinian strategy is to reach agreements with two of its neighbors in the Mediterranean — first Egypt and then Cyprus — to define exclusive economic zones with respect to them, and then consult with lawyers as to what its potential borders with Israel could be. Experts will then take an inventory of the natural resources claimed by the Palestinians and, and they will file their EEZ with the UN convention on the law of the sea. It is a way to save time for future generations, said Mansour. The Palestinians want to move as quickly as possible but these proceedings could take years, he added.

Hezbollah this week ordered a general military call-up for their biggest combat mission in the Syrian war since their forces began fighting in support of the Assad regime in 2013, debkafile military forces report. Iran’s Lebanese proxy has been assigned the task of expelling the Islamic State from broad areas it occupied in the Deir ez-Zor region of eastern Syria and, in particular, the Euphrates River valley which connects eastern Syria and western Iraq. This Hezbollah offensive is designed to open the way for the pro-Iranian Shiite Popular Mobilization Forces and the Badar Forces militias which entered the ISIS-held Iraqi town of Fallujah Friday June 17 to move west and up the Iraqi side of the valley. The two militias spearheaded the Fallujah operation under the command of Iran’s Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani of the Revolutionary Guards and Ground Corps Brig. Gen. Mohammad Pakpour. The plan is for Hezbollah forces to meet these pro-Iranian militia forces on the Syria-Iraq border and so gain control over the most important strategic land pass between Iraq and Syria. Whereas the pro-Iranian militias in Iraq are fighting under US air cover, Hezbollah is assured of Russian air support in Syria.  And so, for the first time in the Syria conflict and its own history, Hezbollah will receive air cover from both the US and Russia, the two superpowers now coordinating their military moves in Syria and Iraq. This strategy, which essentially connects the Syrian and Iraqi campaigns against ISIS, was charted on June 9, at a secret meeting in Tehran of the Russian, Iranian and Syrian defense chiefs.

Shelling from Yemen has wounded two people in southern Saudi Arabia, the kingdom’s civil defense agency said late Thursday, in a rare breach of calm along the border. The civil defense’s Twitter account said the shelling occurred in the Tawal area of Saudi’s Jazan region, without providing further details. Dozens of civilians and Saudi soldiers were killed in fire from Yemen along the border after a Saudi-led military coalition launched operations in March 2015 against Iran-backed Houthi rebels who overran much of Yemen. The Houthis are allied with elite troops loyal to Yemen’s former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. The border has been relatively calm since March when local tribes brokered a truce.

Syria Headline:       Air strikes hit rebel-held parts of Aleppo hours into truce — Observatory

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said air strikes hit rebel-held parts of Aleppo just hours into an announced 48-hour ceasefire and fighting carried on in and around the northern Syrian city. Russia, an ally of Syria, announced the truce there on Thursday but did not say which parties had agreed to it. There has been no public comment from the government of President Bashar Assad or factions fighting his forces on the truce announcement. The Britain-based observatory monitoring group said aerial bombardments hit a number of neighbourhoods in the opposition-held sector and that there were reports of one death and some injuries. “There were strikes on a number of residential areas causing fires and damage. The truce was supposed to have come into effect at 12 midnight, but now there is no truce,” Bebars Mishal, a civil defence chief working in rebel-held areas of Aleppo told Reuters. Two residents in Aleppo said there had been a number of barrel bombs dropped from helicopters and aerial attacks on Thursday within the city. The opposition-held part of Aleppo has been cut off in the past two weeks from the outside world as an escalation in air and artillery strikes on the only road in has made journeys perilous and put hundreds of thousands of people under effective siege. Despite the truce, fierce fighting between government forces and rebels took place overnight around this road, known as the Castello road, with heavy government shelling of the area, the observatory said. A Reuters witness said jets and helicopters have been continuously seen in the skies above the Castello road since dawn. Rebels have since midnight also fired rockets into government-held territory in Aleppo, the observatory said.

The Russian Air Force bombed U.S.-trained rebels in southern Syria not once, but twice Thursday, and the second wave of attacks came after the U.S. military called Russia on an emergency hotline to demand that it stop, a defense official with knowledge of the attack tells Fox News. “They came back and struck again,” the official said about the Russians, visibly angry about the incident. Russian Su-34 “Fullbacks” conducted the airstrikes, according to the official who said it was most likely a flight of two, the typical attack profile for the Russian Air Force in Syria. Su-34s are modern Russian fighter-bombers comparable to a U.S. Air Force F-15. The Russian Air Force “had never conducted strikes” in that portion of Syria before, the official said. Al-Tanf is nestled in an area where Syria, Jordan and Iraq come together. Some of the U.S.-backed Syrian rebels were part of the Pentagon’s “train and equip” program, and others were CIA-trained, the official said.

Iraqi Headline:       Iraqi forces seize government building in the heart of Fallujah

The Iraqi military seized a government building in the heart of Fallujah from Islamic State militants on Friday marking a major step forward in the terror fight, a U.S. military spokesman confirmed. “The building is roughly in the center of town. The fight to take the building was supported by multiple coalition strikes,” Col. Christopher Garver told Fox News from Baghdad. As many as 42,000 people have left the area since the military operation against Fallujah began in late May, according to the United Nations. The Iraqi operation to retake Ramadi left that city largely in ruins. The city once was home to nearly half a million people, but the violence forced most of them to flee. ISIS has held Fallujah longer than any other city. The terror group captured Fallujah in January 2014. Despite the focus on control of Fallujah, 40 miles west of Baghdad, U.S. military officials have said they want the Iraqi forces to continue plans to recapture Mosul, where the majority of ISIS fighters in Iraq are located.

Iraqi Headline: ISIS attack in Iraq kills 15 members of security forces

ISIS has killed 15 members of the local security forces in attacks on villages in northern Iraq, officials said on Friday. The attack was launched late Thursday on villages west of the restive town of Tuz Khurmatu, which lies in an ethnically mixed area 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Baghdad. The ensuing clashes killed 15 members of the police, of a Turkmen paramilitary organization and of the Kurdish peshmerga. “Twelve people, six members of the police and six of the Hashed al-Turkmani were killed in the fighting against Daesh (ISIS),” said Abu Ridha al-Najjar, the local leader of the Turkmen group. “The attack began in Birahmed area last night,” he said of a cluster of villages west of Tuz Khurmatu. The Hashed al-Turkmani is a local branch of the Hashed al-Shaabi, a national umbrella organisation dominated by Tehran-backed Shiite militias.In and around Tuz Khurmatu and other areas in Iraq’s Turkmen heartland, Shiite Turkmen fighters belonging to these militias fight under the banner of the Hashed al-Turkmani. Mullah Karim Shakur, a local peshmerga official, said three Kurdish fighters were also killed in the fighting. The attack was claimed by ISIS in an online statement. The jihadists still hold nearby areas, such as the town of Hawijah and parts of the Hamreen mountain range.

Ethiopian security forces killed more than 400 people in the recent wave of anti-government demonstrations, US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) says. In its most comprehensive report into the Oromo protests, HRW lists the names of more than 300 it says were killed. The government has acknowledged that protesters have died but said HRW was “very generous with numbers”. Protests were sparked by fears that a plan to expand the capital into Oromia region would displace Oromo farmers. They began in November last year, but the government dropped the proposal to enlarge Addis Ababa’s administrative boundaries in January.

A suicide car bombing on Thursday killed 10 members of forces allied to Libya’s unity government who are fighting Daesh, hospital sources said. “Ten dead and seven wounded were brought in… after a suicide attack carried out by Daesh in Abu Grein,” 130 km west of the coastal city of Sirte, said a source at the central hospital in Misrata, from where the pro-unity government forces have launched an offensive. The forces allied to the Government of National Accord (GNA) captured the town of Abu Grein on May 17 as they advanced on Sirte, the terrorist stronghold in Libya. Thirty-two people were killed and 50 wounded in a car-bomb attack in Abu Grein the next day targeting the forces allied with the GNA. The military command of the anti-Daesh operation said that two other car-bombings inside Sirte itself were foiled on Thursday.

Azerbaijan will launch military drills near Nagorno-Karabakh two months after fighting erupted with Armenian forces over the disputed Caucasus region, the country’s defense ministry says. The “operational-tactical exercise will be held from 19 to 24 of June with all the arms and services,” the Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday. The statement noted that the military exercises will take place in “military ranges located in the (Karabakh) frontal zone, and in the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic, as well as the Azerbaijan sector of Caspian Sea set up.” About “25,000 servicemen, more than 300 tanks and armored combat vehicles, more than 100 rocket artillery launchers, up to 40 military aircraft and more than 30 air defense systems, ships of naval forces and special forces units,” will take part in the drills, according to the ministry.

Headline:       Looting and unrest continue roiling Venezuela as shortages persist and protesters demand food

Venezuela, where anger over food shortages is still mounting, continued to be roiled this week by angry protests and break-ins of grocery stores and businesses that have left five dead, at least 30  injured and 200 arrested, according to various news reports. The latest fatality came from the southwest city of Merida, where 17-year-old Jean Paul Omana died Wednesday after being shot Tuesday during a disturbance amid looting. Widespread violence has been reported there, as well as an attack by protesters on the headquarters of President Nicolas Maduro’s United Socialist Party of Venezuela, or PSUV.  As consumers grow increasingly frustrated with ongoing food scarcities and lengthening  lines outside stores, protests are turning more violent.  A Social media reported protests on Wednesday in the Los Teques, Los Altos Mirandinos and Santa Teresa del Tuy suburbs of Caracas, the capital.

Suspected Boko Haram militants attacked a village in Niger while a delegation of ministers were visiting, killing seven gendarmes and wounding 12 in a gun battle, the military said on Friday. The attack happened on Thursday in a village in the region of Diffa that hosts refugees and internally displaced people who have been forced from their home by the Islamist insurgents, officials said. The ministers were unharmed. Neighboring Chad has sent troops to help Niger in a planned counterattack against Boko Haram after the militants seized the southern Niger town of Bosso in an attack that killed 26 soldiers. Niger’s government has called on former colonial power France, which already has 3,500 troops spread across five countries in West Africa, to strengthen military operations against the Nigeria-based Boko Haram and other militants. Niger’s defense minister, Hassoumi Messaoudou, told Radio France International on Friday that regional leaders needed to “rethink Boko Haram” and called on regional forces to defeat the group in Nigeria. “We thought they were reduced to making suicide attacks,” he said. “Now they have rebuilt their military forces. We are dealing with an army.”

Some 5,000 Philippine soldiers have been deployed to the southern province of Sulu to track down the Islamist militant group Abu Sayyaf that beheaded two Canadian hostages and is threatening two others. At least 10 military battalions from the Philippine marines, army, air force and navy are converging on Sulu from land, sea and air, Maj. Filemon Tan Jr., spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command, said. Tan said the operation is not considered “wide scale” but will focus on areas known to back, the Islamic State-linked Abu Sayyaf. “We focus on areas known to be supportive of the Abu Sayyaf group. We will go to the communities known to provide refuge to bandits,” he said. “There are selected target areas. These bandits have relatives and they hide in the populace.” The deployment comes as the militant group is demanding $13 million ransom for the release of Kjarten Sekkingstad, a citizen of Norway, and Marites Flor of the Philippines. They have been held hostage since being abducted from a resort in the Philippines in September. The extremist group beheaded two others taken hostage at the same time — Canadians Robert Hall and John Ridsdel.

The United States will maintain its presence in the Black Sea despite a Russian warning that a U.S. destroyer patrolling there undermined regional security, the U.S. Navy Secretary said.The USS Porter entered the Black Sea this month, drawing heavy criticism from Moscow. Turkey and Romania are expected to push for a bigger NATO presence in the Black Sea at the NATO summit in Warsaw next month. Aboard the USS Mason, another U.S. destroyer, in the Mediterranean on Thursday, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus told Reuters that it was the U.S. Navy’s job to deter aggression and keep sea lanes open. “We’re going to be there,” Mabus said of the Black Sea. “We’re going to deter. That’s the main reason we’re there — to deter potential aggression.” Mabus spoke days after Russia criticized NATO discussions about a creating a permanent force in the Black Sea. “If a decision is made to create a permanent force, of course, it would be destabilizing, because this is not a NATO sea,” Russian news agencies quoted senior Foreign Ministry official Andrei Kelin as saying.

Cox, a member of Britain’s Parliament, was killed Thursday in a brazen attack on the street in her district in northern England. Details have begun to emerge about the reported suspect, Tommy Mair, who has subscribed in the past to publications by white supremacist and pro-apartheid groups. Cox was stabbed and shot in Birstall after a meeting with her constituents in an attack that has shocked a nation known for its strict gun laws. A local official briefed by police told CNN that a gunman “lay in wait” for Cox. A 77-year-old man, who intervened to help Cox, also “sustained a serious injury to his abdomen,” police said. He’s stable but remains in the hospital. Cox, a 41-year-old mother of two, was an avid campaigner for the rights of refugees. Her death comes a week before the so-called Brexit, a crucial referendum on whether Britain should stay in the European Union, and she was an open supporter of remaining in the bloc. The killing has muted the tone of public discussions over the referendum, which has focused heavily on immigration. It put the brakes on official campaigning, with both sides suspending activities out of respect for Cox, just as they had begun to ratchet up their arguments in the final leg of the race. The deficit in the nation’s broadest measure of trade increased in the January-March quarter to the highest level in more than seven years. The current account trade deficit jumped 9.9 percent in the first quarter to $124.7 billion, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. It was the biggest gap since a deficit of $152.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2008, the height of the financial crisis. The higher deficit reflected a $9.6 billion decline in the surplus on investment earnings. That offset a $2 billion decrease in the deficit on merchandise trade and an increase of $400 million in the surplus on services. The current account is the broadest measure of trade because it covers not only trade in goods but also services and investment flows. Economists closely watch the figure because it indicates how much the United States needs to borrow from foreigners. Of the other three women, one had a miscarriage, one terminated her pregnancy, and the third gave birth to an infant that was stillborn. All three cases showed instances of Zika-related birth defects. The six women mentioned Thursday were all infected while traveling in countries where the virus is circulating. The CDC said it will publish weekly results of women who are pregnant and infected with Zika. It seems the moon is not Earth’s only cosmic companion. The newly discovered asteroid 2016 HO3 orbits the sun in such a way that the space rock never strays too far from Earth, making it a “quasi-satellite” of our planet, scientists say. “One other asteroid — 2003 YN107 — followed a similar orbital pattern for a while over 10 years ago, but it has since departed our vicinity,” Paul Chodas, manager of NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a statement Wednesday (June 15). “This new asteroid is much more locked onto us,” Chodas added. “Our calculations indicate 2016 HO3 has been a stable quasi-satellite of Earth for almost a century, and it will continue to follow this pattern as Earth’s companion for centuries to come.” Indeed, 2016 HO3 is the best example of an Earth quasi-satellite ever found, scientists said. The asteroid was discovered on April 27 by scientists using the Pan-STARRS 1 survey telescope in Hawaii. 2016 HO3’s exact size is unknown, but researchers think it’s between 130 feet and 330 feet wide (40 to 100 meters).

Chick-fil-A did WHAT on Sunday?

Back in 2012, Chick-fil-A was targeted by leftwing bullies – after CEO Dan Cathy made comments supporting traditional marriage. They were accused of making “hate chicken.” They were accused of being anti-gay. And they were castigated by the mainstream media. In May a New York City councilman objected to the Southern restaurant chain opening a store in Queens. Mayor Bill de Blasio urged New Yorkers to boycott Chick-fil-A and Councilman Daniel Dromm accused them of spreading a “message of hate.”

So here is their ‘message of hate” :

It’s not all that unusual in the Christian faith to express sympathy and compassion by preparing a country ham or a batch of biscuits or a peach cobbler. Normally Chick-fil-A is closed on Sunday so workers can go to church or spend time with their families or just sit on the front porch in a rocking chair and wave to passersby. Hours after the gunman had massacred 49 people and wounded dozens more in the Pulse nightclub, the community sprang into action. One of the most inspiring photographs showed hundreds and hundreds of people waiting in long lines – for hours to donate blood. Team members at two nearby Chick-fil-A restaurants figured those folks must be getting hungry. So somebody flipped on the lights and they started frying chicken. Before long they were serving sandwiches and nuggets and sweet tea to all the folks waiting to donate blood – along with a host of law enforcement personnel. “We love our city and love the people in our community,” a team member wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page. The following day many of their restaurants provided free chicken biscuits and orange juice to firefighters and police officers and first responders. “We are appalled by the senseless crime that was committed this weekend, but we are part of a community that stands strong and stands together,” they wrote on Facebook.  So why is Chick-fil-A so generous? Their number one corporate priority is to “glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.”

On Monday, a reenactment of a special Temple service was held in Jerusalem on the Armon Hanatziv Promenade. To a casual observer, it resembled a country fair. Families gathered for a pleasant afternoon, children gawked at displays of goats and produce, while the main event, a bake-off, featured two very unusual looking loaves of bread. It became clear this was not your normal gathering of farmers when bearded men in flowing white robes began to blow on long silver trumpets. This full-dress reenactment of the Omer offering was an essential part of preparing for the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple, bringing it closer in the most practical ways. Rabbi Yaakov Savir led the reenactments of the Omer offerings this year in Jerusalem. He told Breaking Israel News that the reenactments are essential to preparing for the Third Temple, because they teach the priests about the practical details of performing the special commandments. “Despite the detailed descriptions in Rabbinic literature, every time we re-enact the rituals we discover something,” he explained. “The two loaves are the only grain offerings brought to the Temple made from leavened bread. All of the other grain offering are flat, pan breads, usually fried in oil. Even the Show Bread that was always present in the Temple, despite being quite large, was essentially matzah, unleavened bread.

Headline:  Iraq to sue Israel for destroying nuclear reactor in 1981

The first deputy speaker of the Iraqi parliament, Homam Hamoudi, announced that Iraq plans to sue Israel for monetary compensation for carrying out Operation Opera, Israeli attack on the Osirak nuclear reactor in southeastern Baghdad which occured on June 7, 1981 . A statement published by Turkish news agency Anatolia said that “the Iraqi Foreign Ministry and the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament has to raise the issue in the international arena and give it special attention, especially as it is the 35th anniversary of the Israeli attack against the nuclear reactor.” At the same time, Hamoudi called on the UN to implement Security Council Resolution 487 from1981 which gives Iraq the right to ask for compensation for the operation against the reactor, which he claims affected the country’s development. In the resolution the UN Security Council demanded that “Israel, in view of its international responsibility for its act of aggression, pay prompt and adequate compensation for the material damage and loss of life suffered as a result of the said act.” Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Iraqi parliament, Abdel Bari Zibari, explained that there are several obstacles which stand in the way of filing the suit, especially the fact that so far Iraq has not received the required international assistance needed to sue Israeli regarding its attack. According to Zibari, such action requires international assistance, particularly from Security Council member countries, so that they will guarantee Iraq’s right to file the lawsuit.

He was quoting the UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Anwar Gargash, who’d given a speech earlier saying the “war is over for our troops.” Gargash is quoted as saying the UAE was “monitoring political arrangements” and “empowering Yemenis in liberated areas.” The UAE has been among the most active members of a Saudi-led intervention in Yemen that began more than a year ago with the aim of rolling back gains by Shiite Houthi rebels.

Syria Headline:       Syrian army recaptures oil field from Islamic State militants

Subsequent to clashes with the Islamic State’s (ISIS) fighters, Syrian regime’s army forces on Tuesday gained control of the Arak oil field in the central province of Homs, official sources and activists reported. The offensive started with the Russian warplanes launching a series of airstrikes on ISIS positions in the eastern countryside of Homs, coupled with artillery bombardment by the Syrian army on the group’s strongholds in the area. “The Russian air cover and heavy bombardment by the army caused ISIS heavy losses in manpower and equipment,” Syrian army officer Firas Jabban told ARA News in Homs. “The army then cleansed the entire area from ISIS terrorists and liberated the Arak oil field,” he added. “There have been casualties on both sides,” local media activist Amro al-Hussein told ARA News over the phone. “ISIS’ withdrawal from the Arak field came due to the intensified Russian airstrikes, which opened to path for the regime’s forces to advance on the ground.”

Iraqi Headline:      Iraqi Security Forces Enter Fallujah

Iraqi security forces are “inside” Fallujah three weeks after launching an offensive to retake the Islamic State-held city, according to a military spokesman for the coalition battling IS in Iraq and Syria. “They [Iraqis] have a foothold in the southern corner, the southern edge of the city,” Col. Chris Garver told Pentagon reporters Wednesday during a teleconference from Baghdad. Garver said the Iraqis are working to “seize the center” of Fallujah and then fight outward. The attack inside the city comes as other Iraqi Security Force brigades, Iraqi police, Anbar tribal fighters and Popular Mobilization Units continue the encirclement of the Fallujah, which is needed to prevent Islamic State fighters from reinforcing or resupplying their fighters there. Multiple Iraqi brigades from four different Iraqi Army divisions are involved in the fight to retake the city. The coalition estimates hundreds of Islamic State fighters remain in Fallujah.

Turkey will miss an end of June deadline to meet the EU’s conditions for securing visa-free travel to the bloc for its citizens, the European Commission is to confirm Wednesday. Visa liberalization was a key part of an EU-Turkey deal struck in March in which Ankara was asked to stem the flow of refugees into Europe in exchange for cash and other benefits. The number of migrants reaching Europe through Turkey has dropped to almost zero since the deal came into effect. Part of the deal was to speed up the lifting of “visa requirements for Turkish citizens at the latest by the end of June 2016” — the original deadline was October — but only if Turkey met all the outstanding conditions, or so-called benchmarks. The June deadline is now going to be missed, with a Commission official saying “there were no major developments on the benchmarks.” The next report on Ankara’s progress, the official said, is due in September. Turkey has had its sights set on September for some time.

Khamenei has the final say on all major issues in Iran. He said Iran has fulfilled its obligations under the agreement but that the U.S. was dragging its feet on lifting sanctions in the banking and insurance sectors, and on unfreezing Iranian assets. “The Americans have not carried out an important part of their commitments,” he said. Pakistani troops fired heavy artillery at Afghan forces at their main Khyber Pass border crossing on Wednesday, the Pakistani military said, an escalation after days of clashes that have killed four people and stranded thousands on both sides. Relations between the US allies have never been close but have been strained over the past 15 years by Afghan accusations that Pakistan supports the Taliban who are fighting to unseat the US-backed government in Kabul. Pakistan denies that. The countries have blamed each other for the fighting that broke out on Sunday at the main crossing point between them over the construction of a new border post on the Pakistani side. “When our people began construction work on the gate on Wednesday, Afghan forces again opened fire at our troops and construction workers,” said a Pakistani security official who declined to be identified. He said Pakistan had retaliated with long-range artillery and mortars. There was no word on any casualties.
The Pakistani military spokesman’s office confirmed the Wednesday fighting. Meanwhile, The Taliban took control of a district center in the central Afghan province of Uruzgan after several days of fighting Afghan forces who are reported to have been supported by US forces. The Taliban said it overran the “police HQ [headquarters] and other installations” at Char Chino and “dismantled” the “district administration center and other buildings.” The jihadist group made the claim on its official propaganda website, Voice of Jihad.

Headline:       UN to authorise EU operation to enforce Libya arms embargo

The UN Security Council on Tuesday was set to authorise an EU naval force to enforce the arms embargo on Libya by intercepting ships suspected of carrying weapons to the Daesh terror group and other militias. The 15-member council was to vote on a resolution drafted by Britain and France that would expand the mission of Operation Sophia, which has been combating migrant-smuggling in the Mediterranean. Operation Sophia’s enforcement of the arms embargo would help shore up the UN-backed unity government as it struggles to establish its authority over the entire north African country. Militias loyal to the new government of Prime Minister Fayez Al Sarraj have been battling to retake from Daesh militants the key city of Sirte. The draft resolution invokes Chapter 7 of the UN charter, which allows for the use of military force.

US President Barack Obama offers no clear strategy for destroying ISIS other than predicting a long, hard road for his too-little, too-late military interventions overseas. That was evident from his latest speech Tuesday, June 14. Realizing this, Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi still does not feel threatened by military defeat, and whenever his forces are pushed back on one front, he promptly opens a new one. And so, when earlier this year, US and Russian-backed local forces aided by air strikes began forcing ISIS out of territory it had occupied since 2014 in Syria and Iraq. ISIS shifted a large part of its forces to Libya and opened a third front there. The 5,000 Islamist fighters were quietly moved from Iraq to southern Jordan, from there to the Sinai Peninsula and from Egypt to Libya. How come that neither the Americans nor anyone else in the West acted to thwart this large-scale military movement? President Obama described the war on the terror organization from a one-sided perspective, as though only his side was making progress on the battlefield. In his speech, Obama bent all his rhetoric skill and intelligence to drawing a thick line between 29-year-old Omar Mateen and “one of the world’s great religions” by dismissing him as a “disturbed individual” notwithstanding the mass-murderer’s oath of allegiance to the ISIS leader.

Police and demonstrators protesting a labor reform bill clashed in the streets of Paris Tuesday resulting in injuries to 20 police officers and about 40 civilians. Another 21 protesters were detained by police, who used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd of thousands who marched through the French capital. Masked demonstrators allegedly threw stones at police, and later vandalized buildings, street signs and cars as they rampaged through the capital. At least three unoccupied cars were set afire, and the prominent Necker children’s hospital, in Paris’ 15th arrondissement, was vandalized. Windows were smashed and a hospital building was sprayed with graffiti. French Health Minister Marisol Touraine commented to the radio station France Info, “We are talking about a children’s hospital that was attacked. There were children going into the operating room at the time, some were asleep. This is truly shocking.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Likud ministers Monday that he will never accept the original Arab Peace Initiative as a basis for negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, according to two sources at the meeting. “If the Arab nations grasp the fact that they need to revise the Arab League proposal according to the changes Israel demands, then we can talk,” Netanyahu said. “But if they bring the proposal from 2002 and define it as ‘take it or leave it’ – we’ll choose to leave it.” The positive part of the plan, he told the ministers, was the willingness of the Arab nations to achieve peace and normalization with Israel. On the other hand, its negative elements include the demand that Israel retreat to the 1967 borders in the West Bank with territorial adjustments, and leave the Golan Heights, as well as the return of the Palestinian refugees.

For the first time ever, Israel was elected to head a permanent committee at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, despite intense efforts by Arab and Muslim states to stop the nomination. In a secret ballot Monday in New York, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon was elected chairman of the GA’s Sixth Committee, which deals with legal issues. “This is a historic achievement for the State of Israel. We broke the glass ceiling: Despite the opposition of many countries, including Iran and others that tried to prevent the vote, we managed to be elected for the first time to head a committee at the UN,” Danon said. In the past, Israeli diplomats have presided over other, less prestigious committees at the UN and even co-chaired the GA, but never headed one of the GA’s six main committees. “The Sixth Committee is the primary forum for the consideration of legal questions in the General Assembly,” according to the UN. Among the issues it is expected to deal with at this fall’s GA are “measures to eliminate international terrorism,” and “the rule of law at the national and international levels.”

Headline:       Bomb blast in central Beirut aimed at bank: minister

A bomb exploded outside the headquarters of Lebanese Blom Bank in central Beirut on Sunday, causing damage but no fatalities, the interior minister said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The Lebanese banking sector has been at the centre of an escalating crisis since the United States passed a law requiring banks to take steps to target the finances of the armed Shi’ite political group Hezbollah. Lebanon’s central bank has pushed its commercial banks to heed the U.S. act, and Blom Bank is one of those that has closed accounts belonging to people suspected of links to Hezbollah. The group had no immediate comment on the blast. The Lebanese Red Cross said two people had suffered minor injuries in the blast, which took place around 8 p.m. in the Verdun area of Beirut, the National News Agency reported. Local television showed footage of a damaged building, with one hole in a concrete wall, and said shattered glass had fallen to the ground from several storeys up. The head of Lebanon’s internal security force, Ibrahim Basbous, said the bomb had contained around 15 kg of explosive material and had been placed in a flower bed, the National News Agency said.

At least 12 people have been killed in suicide bomb attacks on a suburb of Damascus which is home to Syria’s holiest Shia shrine, state media say. Islamic State group said three militants – two carrying explosives belts and one with a car bomb – carried out the attacks in Sayyida Zeinab, 10km (six miles) south of the centre. At least 55 other people were wounded. Sayyida Zeinab, a predominantly Shia area, has been a frequent target of attacks from jihadi groups. The Sunni IS group says it was behind at least two other bombings in the district earlier this year that killed more than 150 people.

A series of airstrikes in an insurgent-held Syrian province on Sunday killed at least 27 people, including four children, activists said. The airstrikes in the northwestern Idlib province struck a crowded market and an apartment block, and came despite reports that a local truce between the government and insurgents had been renewed. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, said at least 21 people were killed by several airstrikes in Idlib city, including one that hit a popular market. The group said another airstrike in the city of Maaret Al-Numan, also in Idlib province, hit an apartment building, bringing it down and killing six people, including a mother and her four children who were trapped under the rubble.

Sometime during the afternoon, ISIS stormed and captured the villages of Shaqal Kabir and Muayshirah after clashing with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeastern Aleppo. This follows four other villages that were also captured by the Islamic State yesterday. Shaqal Kabir and Muayshirah are located west of Manbij city; the villages were likely seized by ISIS fighters redeployed from the Azaz front, a rebel-held region further west.

Iraqi Headline:     ISIS suicide attack kills five in Iraq’s Ramadi: officers

A suicide attack carried out by ISIS fighters killed at least five members of the Iraqi security forces Monday in the city of Ramadi, army officers said. Major General Ismail al-Mahalawi said the ISIS attack targeted an army base in Ramadi with several explosives-laden vehicles driven by suicide bombers and gunmen who fired on soldiers. “Our forces killed all the attackers and destroyed all the car bombs but there were a number of killed and wounded among army ranks,” said Mahalawi, who heads the operations command for Anbar province. Two senior Iraqi army officers, speaking on condition of anonymity, said five soldiers were killed and 11 wounded in the attack.

Headline:   EU, Turkey coming closer to completing agreement

European Council President Donald Tusk told Bild that the EU is moving forward in its efforts to allow Turkish citizens to enter without obtaining a prior visa. “The negotiations will certainly last until October but we’re getting ever closer,” he said, after insisting that the EU will not give in until “they have fulfilled all of the conditions without exception.” In exchange for freer travel, Turkey is required to limit the number of refugees entering Europe and limit its anti-terror laws. Ankara, however, insists that it needs strict laws in order to stop the numerous threats to its security.

Headline:   Car bomb in eastern Turkey wounds nine people – security sources

A car bomb wounded nine people in the eastern Turkish province of Tunceli on Monday near a housing block for civil servants working at a local courthouse, security sources said. Three of those wounded were in critical condition after the bomb was detonated near the lodgings in the district of Ovacik, the sources said. Television images showed the remains of a vehicle burning on the road and smoke rising from damaged buildings. Turkey has seen a series of such attacks over recent months, including last week when a car bomb ripped through a police bus in central Istanbul near the main tourist district, a major university and the mayor’s office. Kurdish militants claimed responsibility for that attack. The militants have increasingly staged bombings outside the largely Kurdish southeast, where they have been waging an armed insurgency for three decades.

Headline:        Border Clashes Between Pakistan and Afghanistan Resume After Brief Cease-Fire

Border clashes have resumed between security forces of Pakistan and Afghanistan after a short-lived ceasefire on Monday, officials said. Overnight skirmishes killed at least one person wounded 18 others, according to officials, forcing around 200 Pakistani families to relocate to safer areas. “Pakistan wanted to build new installations and Afghan border forces didn’t allow it.  Pakistan went further and fired towards Afghan forces,” Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah told a meeting of ministers in Kabul. He confirmed the exchange of fire, which lasted seven hours, left one Afghan soldier dead and six others wounded.  The Pakistani side also suffered casualties at the Torkham crossing clash. Abdullah insists bilateral understandings bind the two countries to seek mutual consent before constructing new installations near the border. “The Afghan security and defense forces retaliated to safeguard the territorial integrity and defend the country and its people … armed forces are always ready to defend their country and people and to react against any kind of threats,” the Afghan Foreign Ministry said in a separate statement. But officials in Pakistan rejected Afghan assertions the construction activity was illegal and blamed Afghan security forces for resorting to “unprovoked firing” that wounded 12 people, including a Pakistani border guard.

Headline:      Eritrea, Ethiopia trade blame for border clashes

Eritrea and Ethiopia accused each other of starting clashes on Sunday between their soldiers in a border region, highlighting persistent tension over a boundary dispute that triggered war in 1998-2000.
Ethiopia said the situation was calm on Monday, after a resident on the Ethiopian side reported the sound of explosions all day on Sunday and lasting into the early morning of Monday. Eritrea, a Horn of Africa country that won independence from Ethiopia in 1991, fought border wars with its larger neighbor in 1998-2000 that killed about 70,000 people. Eritrea’s Information Ministry said in a statement late on Sunday night that the Ethiopian government had “unleashed an attack against Eritrea on the Tsorona Central Front.” Tsorona is a town south of the Eritrean capital Asmara and close to the frontier. The area saw intense fighting during the earlier border war. “The purpose and ramifications of this attack are not clear,” the Eritrean statement said. Ethiopia disputed this account, saying Eritrea started the fight. “Their forces were promptly repulsed. They were given a proper response,” government spokesman Getachew Reda said, adding that the situation was quiet on Monday.

Headline:      Daesh bombers hit Libyan forces as Sirte battle rages

Forces allied with Libya’s unity government battled Sunday to retake the Daesh group’s last redoubts in its stronghold of Sirte, facing fierce resistance including a series of suicide car bombings.
The pro-government forces entered Sirte on Wednesday and have been advancing more quickly than expected against Daesh, which seized control of the coastal city last year and turned it into its main base of operations in North Africa. The loss of Sirte would be a major setback for Daesh, which has also been losing territory in Syria and Iraq where the jihadist group established its self-declared “caliphate” in 2014. Daesh — surrounded in a densely populated area of around five square kilometers in the city center — have been putting up fierce resistance and on Sunday carried out three suicide car bombings against pro-government fighters. “Three explosions from cars driven by Daesh suicide bombers targeted our forces in Sirte,” Reda Issa, a spokesman for the unity government’s forces, told AFP. Two of the bombers hit gatherings of pro-government forces and another hit a field hospital, he said. At least one person was killed and four wounded in the blasts, Issa said.

Amaq News Agency, one of the Islamic State’s news outlets, has released a short infographic detailing the jihadist group’s operations and activities in the Philippines. The infographic is set up similar to those released for official Islamic State wilayats (provinces), which indicates the rising importance of the Philippines for the jihadist group. The infographic (above) includes several important claims of the Islamic State in the Philippines, including how many groups have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and where these groups operate. Additionally, it claims 289 Filipino troops have been killed by Islamic State forces since April 2015, including 100 alone in April 2016. The Filipino government has heavily disputed these numbers. While the infographic contains numbers from April 2015, it confirms the first official announcement of Filipino jihadist groups pledging allegiance to the Islamic State occurred in January 2016. Videos and reports of groups pledging bayah (allegiance) have emerged since 2014, shortly after Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State, claimed the creation of a caliphate. The video in January, however, was the first time the Islamic State publicly accepted these pledges. A month later, the Islamic State’s Furat media released another video showing more groups pledging allegiance.  This includes Isnilon Hapilon, a US-designated terrorist, who heads the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG). In an April issue of the Islamic State’s weekly newsletter Al Naba, the jihadist group said that Hapilon (called Abu Abdullah al Filipini, one of his noms de guerre, in the newsletter) has been appointed as emir of all Islamic State forces in the Philippines according to a translation from the SITE Intelligence Group.

Shooter Omar Mateen, 29, from Port St. Lucie in Florida, opened fire at Pulse night club in the early hours of Sunday, killing at least 50 people and injuring 53 others. This is the first time ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack on US soil. Shortly before the attack, Mateen, who was born in New York to Afghan parents, called 911 and pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, law enforcement officials told NBC News. And the terror group’s Amaq news agency said on Sunday the Islamist militant group was responsible for the shooting. ‘The armed attack that targeted a gay night club in the city of Orlando in the American state of Florida which left over 100 people dead or injured was carried out by an Islamic State fighter,’ Amaq said. U.S. officials cautioned, however, that they had no immediate evidence of any direct connection with ISIS or any other foreign extremist group, nor had they uncovered any contacts between the gunman and any such group. During the attack, Mateen referenced the brothers who carried out the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, a Massachusetts State Police spokesman said on Sunday. ‘During a conference call with federal law enforcement officials a short time ago, Massachusetts State Police and other local law enforcement authorities learned that the Orlando nightclub gunman, during his rampage, pledged allegiance to ISIS and referenced the Tsarnaev brothers,’ state police spokesman David Procopio said in an e-mail.

A nuclear-powered U.S. submarine arrived at the South Korean port city of Busan on Monday. The USS Mississippi, a Virginia-class attack submarine, made its first visit to South Korea as part of its maiden voyage to the Asia-Pacific, according to the U.S. military. “With a crew of approximately 141 sailors, the Mississippi will conduct a multitude of missions while maintaining proficiency of the latest capabilities of the submarine fleet,” Submarine Group Seven said in its statement. Volunteering in South Korea, including leisure activities with children from a local orphanage and assistance with facility maintenance will also mark the goodwill visit, the military said in its statement. The USS Mississippi’s visit comes months after the United States deployed a B-52 strategic bomber and four F-22 stealth jets to South Korea in January and February, Yonhap reported. North Korea had condemned the United States for the B-52 deployment and threatened a “nuclear response” for the action, although the United States often has sent B-52 and B-2 bombers to South Korea over the decades.

Headline:   Four NATO battalions heading to Baltic States, Poland

NATO plans to send four multinational battalions to the Baltic states and Poland to increase defenses against Russia. Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO secretary-general, said defense ministers plan to formally approve the plans in talks that begin Tuesday in Brussels. “Over the next two days, we will take a series of important decisions to strengthen our collective defense and enhance our cooperation with partners,” he said in a briefing with the media. Stoltenberg said the decision will provide “the right balance between a greater ability to reinforce, and boost our forward presence.” Decisions made at the meetings, he said, will pave the way for the Warsaw Summit in July. The United States, Germany and United Kingdom will act as framework nations for three of the battalions. The fourth battalion’s makeup wasn’t revealed. “This will send a clear signal that NATO stands ready to defend any ally,” the NATO chief said.

Heat will build to dangerous and record-challenging levels in much of the southwestern United States toward this weekend and into early next week. Temperatures will climb well past 100 F in parts of California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Teaxas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona with the worst days of heat likely from Saturday to Monday. While the summer months can be unbearable in terms of heat in the Southwest, temperatures will climb to 10-20 F above average for the middle of June during the pattern. “The core of the heat will be centered on Arizona, where portions of the state, including Phoenix, could approach their highest temperature on record for any calendar day,” according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski. The Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, David Lau, said he would like to see the Jewish temple rebuilt on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. To build it, there was no need to remove any of the Muslim shrines on the Temple Mount, where there was plenty of room for “Jews, Christians, Muslims, everyone,” he told the Knesset Channel on Tuesday. “I can’t tell you exactly what was in the temple, but the truth is that when you see the prophets, the writings, the sayings of the sages, you understand that whoever went there came back full of inspiration, emotion, joy and satisfaction, so I yearn for those days,” he added. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to maintain the status quo that prohibits Jewish prayer at the site, and has ordered members of Knesset not to approach the Mount, a move contested by Jewish zealots bent to building a third temple.

The IDF declined to provide details on numbers of troops, but battalions are usually made up of several hundred soldiers. It follows emergency security consultations between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, following which the government froze tens of thousands of visitor permits for Palestinian Arabs into Israeli sovereign territory in response to the massacre. IDF forces also acted quickly to seal off the attackers’ hometown of Yatta, adjacent to Hebron. On Thursday morning, Defense Minister Liberman told reporters at the scene of the attack that “does not intend to make do with just talk.” “I came here to salute the people of Tel Aviv who endured another (attack), and despite this know how to return to life as normal,” Liberman said as he stood in Sarona Market. “I do not intend to elaborate on the steps we intend to take, but… I don’t intend to make do with just words.”

The Syrian army’s campaign is taking place as U.S.-backed forces separately advance against ISIS militants around Manbij near the Turkish border further northwest and make gains in the countryside north of Raqqa city. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said government-allied forces were 15 km (9 miles) from Tabqa. A military source said in February that Tabqa, some 50 km (30 miles) west of Raqqa city, would be the first target of a Syrian government attack in Raqqa province. The army said large numbers of ISIS fighters had been killed in the campaign. The Observatory said some 80 ISIS militants had died.

Syria Headline: Western coalition expects ISIS to fight hard to retain Manbij

Arab-Kurdish fighters backed by the United States Friday cut ISIS’s main supply route between Syria and Turkey in a major setback for the extremists. he extremists lost control Friday of a vital supply artery when Arab-Kurdish forces completely surrounded a key extremist-held town. “The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) cut off the last road from Manbij to the Turkish border,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based pro-opposition monitoring group. Manbij lies at the heart of the last stretch of territory along Turkey’s border still under ISIS control, and was a key point on the extremists’ supply line from Turkey. Other secondary roads to the frontier are more dangerous and difficult to access, Observatory head Rami Abdel-Rahman said. The U.S. envoy to the anti-ISIS coalition backing the SDF, Brett McGurk, confirmed the road had been severed. “ISIL terrorists now completely surrounded with no way out,” he wrote on Twitter, using another acronym for ISIS. This week the SDF, backed by coalition airstrikes, cut the road north out of Manbij to the ISIS-held border town of Jarabulus, which the extremists had used as a transit point for fighters, money and weapons. The SDF also blocked the road south out of Manbij heading to ISIS’s de facto capital of Raqqa.

Two car bombings by suicide bombers in taxis packed with explosives took place Thursday morning in Baghdad. Later, 14 were killed and dozens were wounded at a police checkpoint in a residential area in the northern part of the Iraqi capital.

Kurdish Headline:        Kurdish group claims responsibility for Istanbul attack

A Kurdish militant group on Friday claimed responsibility for a car-bomb attack in Istanbul this week that killed 11 people, saying it was just the beginning of a war. In a statement posted online, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons also warned tourists that Turkey was no longer secure for them. “You are not our targets but Turkey is no longer safe for you,” it read. “We have just started the war.” The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons is considered an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and has carried out several attacks in the past. It denounced the ruling Justice and Development Party, which was founded by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for its “wild war” against Kurds. Turkey’s southeast plunged into violence last summer when a 2½-year fragile truce between the state and Kurdish rebels collapsed. The rush hour car-bomb attack on Tuesday morning targeted a police vehicle in Istanbul and injured 36 people in addition to those killed. Istanbul’s bombing was followed on Wednesday by a suicide attack in the southeastern town of Midyat that killed three police officers and three civilians. On Thursday, The PKK said the Midyat attack was carried out by one of its “comrades,” code name Dirok Amed. The authorities were quick to report they suspected Kurdish militants in both cases. The claims of responsibility confirmed those suspicions.

Significant gains have been made by Libyan government air, sea and land forces fighting to recapture the central city of Sirte from so-called Islamic State, officials say. Forces allied to the Tripoli government assert they now have the upper hand. Warplanes bombed IS positions in Sirte while naval forces fired missiles into key areas including the port that are held by the militants, officials say. The battle for the city began last month but has recently intensified. Libya still has rival regional administrations and armed forces in the east and west of the country, with each battling extremist militants in their territories. The forces spearheading the advance on Sirte are the Tripoli-based UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA). Coastguard commander for central Libya Col Reda Issa told the BBC that his men were now positioned across Sirte’s coastline to prevent any militants from trying to escape.

Fear is on the rise and so is the price of gold. Gold futures for August hit a three-week high Thursday, rising to $1,272.70 per ounce, just under a key resistance level of $1,275. The yellow metal is up about 20 percent year to date, and some high-profile investors — like George Soros and Stanley Druckenmiller — have made no secret that they see bad times ahead in the markets and gold is a safer bet. “As far as the geopolitical element, it’s certainly not a chicken little atmosphere,” said Jim Steel, chief commodities analyst at HSBC. “I think there’s enough uncertainty facing the global economy and even some geopolitical tensions to keep buying the gold market.” Investors believing they need to have gold in their portfolio as a hedge against the outcome of easy central bank policies and for other safety reasons are fueling a run in the metal. Some analysts say gold could easily climb above $1,300 an ounce. In fact, DoubleLine Capital CEO Jeff Gundlach likes it, and he says gold could go to $1,400. Soros has reportedly been buying both gold and gold mining shares, while Drunkenmiller told investors last month to get out of stocks altogether and buy the yellow metal due to concerns about China’s economy and the Fed‘s easy money policies. Analysts say there are a host of reasons investors are loading up on gold, and at some point later this year, the U.S. presidential election could be seen as one of them.

Let me stop you for a second before you read the news about the Holy Sepulchre. We all know Jesus was laid to rest and so the place where Jesus was buried is often in the news. However, what is the big deal?  I can see if Jesus was still in the tomb why so many people would want to see it and him but Jesus was only in that tomb for 3 days and left never to return to it so why is everyone who excited about fixing up a place where Jesus is NOT?  You want to go see someone who is dead go to Budda’s grave or  Muminaid’s grace they are still DEAD!  Instead of looking inside a empty tomb you should be excited about looking up because they is where Jesus is right now and thats where He is going to come back from. There is only one God who was dead and came back to life and that God is Jesus Christ and no grave could ever keep God down!!!!! Ask yourself this question. Why didn’t Budda or Muminaid raise up like Jesus? Because they could not as they were not God.  If you want to live after you die you should look to Christ now before you die and end up like Budda or Muminaid.

Headline:     Palestinian Authority FM: Conclusions of Paris Summit to be non-binding

Foreign Affairs Minister of the Palestinian Authority, Riyad al-Maliki, said Saturday that some international nations interfered in the Paris summit peace talks to ensure that its final conclusions would be non-binding. Al-Maliki was quoted saying that, “countries interfered so that the final announcement of the Paris Conference would not include concrete stances regarding the peace process, the settlements, or an established  time-table.” According to one report, the United States was one of the nations involved in pushing this compromise. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was updated Friday night by French FM Jean-Marc Ayrault regarding progress made in the conference. Ayrault said that France inc tends to send a designated emissary to the Middle East in order to push forward the peace process and regional stability.

Headline: Israelis hold annual march through a tense Jerusalem

Thousands of Israelis marched through Jerusalem’s Old City amid high tensions on Sunday to commemorate the capture of the city’s eastern sector in the 1967 Mideast war. The marchers, waving Israeli flags and chanting, paraded through the ancient center, which is home to the city’s most sensitive holy sites. The march snaked through the heart of the Old City’s Muslim Quarter, where revelers danced and blew horns. The march comes amid a nearly nine month-long wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence. In a sign of the strain, Israel’s Supreme Court earlier Sunday limited the march’s duration in a bid to “cause minimum friction with Muslim residents,” and police beefed up security to ensure calm. But no incidents were reported by nightfall, police said, adding that more than 30,000 marchers participated. Police took extra precautions because the march may have coincided with the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins Monday.

During his 48-hour trip to Moscow (Monday and Tuesday June 6-7), Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will try and talk President Vladimir Putin into cutting Israel into the military teamwork evolving between Washington and Moscow for combating the Islamic State in Syria. As a quid pro quo, he will offer to elevate Moscow to senior broker in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, with Moscow or Geneva selected as the venue for direct Israeli-Palestinian talks, if they occur – and with US participation. Netanyahu is also keen on a role for Egypt’s Presidents Abdek-Fattah al-Sisi.

And Friday, June 3, on the day of the Paris meeting, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikihail Bogdanov, who is in charge of Kremlin Middle East policy, offered a formula for resolving the problem of Israeli settlements on the West Bank.  That formula was very similar to the land swaps plan proposed by Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman a few years ago.
It consisted essentially of the transfer to the Palestinian state of parts of Israel with dense Arab populations, in return for Palestinian recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Israeli communities of Judea and Samaria.
In comments to Tass news service, Bogdanov said that Moscow is willing to host an Israeli-Palestinian peace conference, and also offered to mediate between the rival Palestinian factions, including Abu Mazen’s Fatah and the radical Hamas which rules the aza Strip.
While some Israeli politicians see the French initiative as offering President Barack Obama a handle for settling accounts with PM Netanyahu before he leaves the White House at the end of the year, Moscow and Jerusalem are concocting a parallel strategy – not merely to block the Franco-American move, but also to lift Washington’s drive for an Israeli-Palestinian accord from Paris to Moscow.

Headline: Jordan officers killed in attack at Baqaa camp near Amman

Five people have been killed in an attack on Jordanian intelligence officers at a Palestinian refugee camp near the capital, Amman, government officials say. They described the incident, rare in Jordan, as a “terrorist attack”. Three of the five people killed were intelligence officers, the officials said. The attack took place at the sprawling Baqaa camp north of Amman at about 07:00 local time (04:00 GMT). The Baqaa camp was one of six set up in 1968 for Palestinian refugees fleeing the West Bank and Gaza Strip as a result of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. No-one has yet said they carried out the Baqaa attack. He gave no details of the attack but said it was carried out by those with the “criminal behaviour of people who are outside of our religion”. Mr Momani said two of those killed were a guard and a telephone exchange operator. A security source later told AFP news agency that initial findings suggested the attack was carried out by a lone gunman with an automatic weapon.
The attack took place on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Hezbollah, backed by the Syrian Arab Army’s 43rd Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division, carried out a successful ambush near the Lebanese border on Monday, killing several enemy combatants from Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) at Jaroud Faleeta. Eight civilians including five members of one family were killed in 24 hours of shelling by Iran-backed rebels on residential parts of Yemen’s third city Taez, local officials said Monday. Syria Headline:      Another ISIS village captured as the Syrian Arab Army marches towards Raqqa
Starting at noon today, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) continued its operations against ISIS in western Raqqa following up on a string of advances in the past week. With heavy clashes ongoing, the SAA is pushing towards the Rasafeh crossroad after capturing the village of Bur Ambaj yesterday. Moments ago, a field correspondent revealed to al-Masdar that the SAA had liberated Khirbat-Zaydān; the latter village is located directly east of Bur Ambaj. The source also said government troops – spearheaded by brand new T-90 tanks – had cleared upwards of 10 kilometers formerly ISIS-held territory in the past 24 hours alone. Effectively, the SAA has advanced approximately 45 kilometers since beginning the offensive less than one week ago. Remarkably, government troops are now only 30 kilometers from Tabqa Airbase; this air field is symbolic for the Syrian military as hundreds of government soldiers were executed by ISIS in August 2014 shortly after the Islamic State captured the airbase.

Syria Headline:    Syrian Army recaptures Tayyim Hill in southwest Deir Ezzor
Two days after losing the large hilltop of Tal Tayyim, the Syrian Arab Army’s 137th Artillery Brigade of the 17th Reserve Division reportedly recaptured this site after a violent battle with the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) this afternoon. With the recapture of Tal Tayyim this afternoon, the Syrian Armed Forces were able to also able to seize several points that are adjacent to this hilltop in southwest Deir Ezzor. The 137th Brigade received a major boost, when reinforcements from the 104th Airborne Brigade of the Republican Guard arrived at the Panorama Checkpoint to relieve the embattled soldiers there. Fighting is still ongoing in the southwestern countryside of Deir Ezzor; however, the Syrian Armed Forces are currently on the move.

Civilians fleeing Falluja, an Iraqi stronghold of the so-called Islamic State (IS), are being shot as they leave, an aid agency says. The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said families it had interviewed described people being shot dead by IS as they crossed the Euphrates River. The NRC, that runs refugee camps near Falluja, said up to 50,000 people remained in the city. Iraq’s army began the fight to retake the city late last month. Falluja lies just 50km (30 miles) west of Baghdad and has been held by IS since 2014. It is one of two remaining IS strongholds in Iraq. Shakir al-Essawi, the head of Falluja’s regional council, told Reuters people were trying to cross the Euphrates in refrigerators, cupboards and barrels. “Our biggest fears are now tragically confirmed with civilians being directly targeted while trying to flee to safety,” said Nasr Muflahi, the Iraq country director of the NRC, in a statement which said “armed opposition groups” were behind the shooting. “This is the worst that we feared would happen to innocent men, women and children who have had to leave everything behind in order to save their lives.”

Kurdish Headline:      Turkey bombs Kurdish positions in Kobane

Turkey’s military on Sunday hit the Kurdish city of Kobane in northern Syria with four shells, bombing residential houses, local sources reported. The Turkish army forces, stationed on the border with Syria’s Kurdish region, targeted the districts of Khikhire and Tarmik in southeastern Kobane on Sunday evening. “Four artillery shells hit Kobane coming from the Turkish side of the border, causing destruction of several houses,” eyewitnesses told ARA News in Kobane. It was not immediately clear how many casualties fell in the Turkish bombardment. The city of Kobane and its countryside have been under the control of the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) since expelling militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) in February 2015. Since then, the YPG-held areas have been exposed to several mortar and artillery attacks by the Turkish army, according to Kurdish military sources. “As the Kurdish forces continue their advance against ISIS terrorists and other Turkey-backed jihadi groups, the Turkish authorities keep targeting the Kurdish positions in a direct support to those terror groups,” a YPG official told ARA News.

Turkish energy company Unit International has reached a $4.2 billion deal with Iran’s energy ministry to build seven natural gas power plants there, in what it said was the biggest investment in Iran since the lifting of sanctions. The power stations, to be built in seven separate regions of Iran, Turkey’s eastern neighbor, would have a combined installed capacity of 6,020 megawatts, the company said in a statement. The United States, European Union and United Nations lifted most sanctions on Iran in January under a deal with world powers whereby Tehran agreed to curbs on its nuclear program. Turkish companies have seen the move as a major trade and investment opportunity, with the car, clothing, textiles, machinery and chemicals sectors also seen offering potential. “Unit International has reached a deal with the Iranian Energy Ministry worth some $4.2 billion to build natural gas combined cycle power plants,” Unit said, adding the agreement was signed at a ceremony in Tehran on June 1.

The attack came hours after Taliban fighters stormed a courthouse south of Kabul, killing at least seven people, including a newly appointed chief prosecutor. Headline:      Libya PM rules out international military intervention

The prime minister of Libya’s UN-backed unity government has ruled out an international military intervention to fight the Daesh terror group, which has had a growing presence in the country since 2014. Some 25 nations including the United States and Russia agreed last month to help Libya arm itself against the extremists, but Prime Minister Fayez Al Sarraj told French newspaper Journal du Dimanche he would not allow foreign troops on the ground. “It’s true that we need help from the international community in our fight against terrorism and it’s true that this is something we have already received,” he said in the interview, published on Sunday. “But we are not talking about international intervention,” Sarraj said, adding that the presence of foreign ground troops would be “contrary to our principles”. “Rather we need satellite images, intelligence, technical help… not bombardments,” he said. The Government of National Accord (GNA), established in Tripoli more than two months ago, has been trying to unify violence-ridden Libya and exert its control over the entire North African country.

Headline:    Kenya opposition Cord protests turn deadly in Kisumu

At least two people have died and five have been injured after Kenyan police opened fire to disperse opposition protests in the western city of Kisumu, a local reporter has told the BBC. The police have not commented. The opposition has been holding weekly demonstrations against the electoral commission, which it says is biased. Nairobi’s police chief had warned opposition supporters not to take part in Monday’s protest in the Kenyan capital “if you value your life”. Officers shot dead three people in similar protests in May. They said they were acting in self-defense. Journalist Richard Omondi says he has confirmed the latest fatalities with the authorities at the Kisumu hospital where the injured were taken. A bullet has also been removed from the body of a five-year-old boy, who survived the injury. Omondi told the BBC that protesters had earlier blocked roads with burning tyres and were heading to the electoral commission’s offices when police intervened. They used tear gas followed by live bullets to disperse the demonstrators. Presidential spokesman Manoah Esipisu said those shot had been looting.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said regional stakeholders in Asia should seek a “diplomatic solution” to increased tensions in the South China Sea. “We are looking for a peaceful resolution to the dispute in the South China Sea and oppose any country resolving claims through unilateral action,” Kerry said. Kerry was speaking in Beijing ahead of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, Voice of America reported Monday. Chinese President Xi Jinping also delivered a speech, calling for an increase in “mutual trust” between China and the United States. “The vast Pacific should be a stage for cooperation, not an area for competition,” Xi said. Beijing’s race for legitimacy in the disputed Spratly Islands, however, has cast a long shadow over the South China Sea. China’s island-building activities have drawn condemnations from the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.

An Israeli government order issued Tuesday called on the Wakf trust that oversees Islamic holy sites to halt construction work on the Temple Mount that is damaging valuable ancient artifacts found in the area, Israel Radio reported Wednesday. According to the report, the decree cites Israel Antiquities Authority warnings that the Wakf’s building structures and activities along the perimeter wall of the contested holy compound are destructive. The Jerusalem Municipality issued the order that the Prime Minister’s Office approved in an emergency meeting.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held on Thursday night a political-informational consultation ahead of the event, at the end of which Foreign Ministry Director-General Dore Gold held a press conference in which he compared the French peace initiative to the Sykes-Picot agreement, which divided up the former territories of the Ottoman Empire. He stressed that any effort by the international community to impose a solution would fail. “One hundred years ago, two officials by the name of Mark Sykes and Francois-Georges Picot tried to dictate a new order in the Middle East,” Gold said. “It was at the apex of the era of colonialism in our area. It utterly failed then and will completely fail today. The only way to make peace is by means of direct negotiations without prior conditions with the full backing of the Arab states and not by means of a conference in Paris. If you have a conflict with your neighbor you don’t go all the way to France and bring Senegal over to solve it. You talk directly to your neighbor.”

In marking the 16th anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the Lebanese newspaper Al-Safir reported that the Hezbollah terrorist militia is busy digging tunnels under the Israeli border in preparation for future conflict. According to the article, the tunnels enable Hezbollah terrorists to attack Israel at a moment’s notice, and include sophisticated ventilation and electricital systems and enough supplies to allow militants to remain in the tunnels for weeks at a time. Fully aware of the threat, Israel’s Home Front Command is busy training civil defense units in towns and villages across northern Israel. That effort includes a great many Arab communities, who after the last Lebanon war realized Hezbollah missiles do not differentiate between Arabs and Jews. “There is a big change in the Arab population in Israel in that they are much more willing to cooperate with us,” Col. Eren Makov, the Northern Regional Commander of the Homefront Command, said in a recent interview with The Media Line. “We give them training in what to do and they see it as a contribution.” Israeli officials stress that the next war with Hezbollah isn’t likely to happen anytime soon, given that the Lebanese group is so bogged down in the Syrian civil war, in which it has lost thousands of troops. On the other hand, Hezbollah operates at the whim of the Iranian regime. Should Tehran or the besieged regime of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad view it as beneficial to draw Israel into the conflict, they could order a Hezbollah assault on the Galilee or Golan Heights.

OPEC failed to agree a clear oil-output strategy on Thursday as Iran insisted on steeply raising its own production, though Tehran’s arch-rival Saudi Arabia promised not to flood the market and sought to mend fences within the organization. Tensions between the Sunni-led kingdom and the Shi’ite Islamic Republic had blighted several previous OPEC meetings, including in December 2015 when the group fell short of agreeing a formal output target for the first time in years. Strains were less acute on Thursday, however, as new Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih showed Riyadh wanted to be more conciliatory and his Iranian peer Bijan Zanganeh kept his criticism of Riyadh to an unusual minimum. Headline:      Yemen’s Shiite rebels retake ground from government forces

Yemeni officials say the country’s Shiite rebels have retaken ground from forces loyal to the internationally recognized government in two central provinces, with at least 85 fighters killed on both sides over the past three days. The officials said Thursday the fighting has been taking place in Marib and Shabwa provinces. They say that in Shabwa’s region of Bihan, along with the 85 killed, about 100 fighters have been wounded on both sides. Syria Headline:       US-backed fighters ‘advance on IS-held Manbij‘

US-backed Kurdish and Arab fighters have opened up a new front against so-called Islamic State (IS) in northern Syria, close to the Turkish border. The offensive by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is reported to be directed at Manbij, a town under IS control. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said US-led pre-dawn air strikes on Manbij killed 15 civilians. The operation aims to cut IS off from an area it uses to move weapons and fighters across the border. Thousands of forces have been deployed in the offensive, which could take weeks, unnamed US officials told Reuters news agency. The SDF fighters are being supported by US special forces. US officials say the SDF force is mostly Arab with a small number of Kurds. However, the Syrian Observatory (SOHR) said most of the fighters were from the Kurdish Popular Protection Units (YPG) militia. Turkey considers the YPG a terrorist group and fiercely opposes any Kurdish advances near the border. The SOHR added the troops were about 15km (nine miles) from Manbij. The clashes were “fierce and intense”, SDF military adviser Nasser Haj Mansour told AFP news agency.

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives near a mosque in the Syrian coastal city of Latakia on Thursday, killing and wounding several people, a monitoring group and state media reported. The explosion took place near the city centre as people were leaving prayers, state TV reported, describing it as a terrorist attack. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the conflict using sources on the ground, confirmed the blast took place in a northern area of Latakia. The Obseratory said the blast killed at least three people. State media reported at least one dead and several wounded.

Syria Headline:    FSA rebels battle ISIS near Damascus-Baghdad highway

A Free Syrian Army-linked rebel group active in the remote stretches of central Syria has advanced against ISIS near the Damascus-Baghdad International Highway. The Ahmad al-Abdo Martyrs Forces announced Wednesday evening that its fighters seized the Zaza and Kabad checkpoints northeast of the Bir al-Qassab region in the country’s vast semi-desert following a “surprise operation.” “[We] expelled ISIS members from the region, killing 10 of their fighters while capturing two of them as the rest fled toward… the desert,” the group—which is reportedly supported by the US and Jordan—claimed in a statement posted on its Facebook page. A spokesperson for the Ahmad al-Abdo Martyrs Forces spoke with the activist Local Coordination Committees about the fighting, saying that a foreign ISIS commander had been killed in the battle. Saeed Saif claimed that ISIS had running an operations room at the captured checkpoints, adding that the Zaza point carried “strategic importance” since it was a linking point for ISIS fighters. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also covered the desert battle, reporting that a rebel group—which would not name—had killed a number of ISIS fighters during its fight to seize the Zaza and Kabad checkpoints.

The Turkish army killed five ISIS militants in Syria in cross-border shelling, Turkish military sources said Thursday, hitting positions west of where an offensive on militants was launched by Syrian fighters with U.S. backing. Washington informed Ankara of the Manbij operation, but it was beyond the range of Turkish artillery and Turkey would not back a campaign in which Syrian Kurdish fighters played a role, another Turkish military source said Wednesday. Turkish border guards fired artillery at two ISIS positions near the Syrian town of Azaz on Wednesday, the Turkish military sources said, west of the U.S.-backed operation and directly south of the Turkish border town of Kilis, which has been repeatedly hit by ISIS rockets. Headline:  Turkey slams Germany’s genocide vote, recalls envoy

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says Turkey is recalling its ambassador to Germany for consultations after what he calls a “historic error” by the German parliament to recognize the killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks a century ago as genocide. The motion, which was put forward by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing coalition of right and left and the opposition Greens, passed with support from all the parties in Parliament. In a show of hands, there was one abstention and one vote against. The vote heightened tensions between Germany and Turkey at a time when Ankara is playing a key role in stemming the flow of migrants to Europe. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that “this decision will seriously impact Turkish-German relations.” Speaking during a visit to Kenya, Erdogan said recalling the ambassador for consultations was a “first step” and that the Turkish government would consider further steps to be taken in response to the vote.

Headline:      Taliban Kidnap 17 in Northern Afghanistan

Regional officials in Afghanistan say Taliban abducted at least 17 passengers in the north of the country late Wednesday. Zabiullah Amani, the provincial governor’s spokesman, said the passengers, local residents of Balkhab district, were traveling by bus to the capital of Sar-e-Pul province when Taliban kidnapped them. He said local tribal elders were negotiating their release. This is the second mass kidnapping in a week by the Afghan Taliban. Some 200 passengers were abducted earlier this week by insurgents who set up illegal check points on a highway in northern Kunduz province. They later released some of those passengers but executed at least 17 of them. Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters gathered in Kabul Thursday for a demonstration against the Kunduz abductions and killings. The protest was organized by the Afghanistan Green Trend party led by former intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh. Demonstrators chanted anti-Taliban slogans. The protest ended after the organizers were allowed to enter the city and read out their resolution at Pashtoonistan square near the presidential palace gates.

Headline:       Libyan forces lose 10 men in clashes with ISIS near Sirte

Libyan brigades aligned with a new UN-backed government in Tripoli lost 10 men and had another 40 wounded in fighting close to the Islamic State stronghold of Sirte on Wednesday, a hospital spokesman said. The brigades, mostly composed of fighters from the western city of Misrata, have advanced to the outskirts of Sirte over the past week and say they intend to recapture the city. On Wednesday they had gained ground south of the city, and at a power station west of Sirte, according to statements posted on their social media accounts. They said they had faced four suicide car bombings, two of which had exploded before reaching their targets. Western states are hoping the United Nations-backed government, which arrived in Tripoli in March, can bring together Libya’s competing factions to defeat ISIS. The extremist group established a foothold in Libya amid political chaos and conflict in the North African state, gaining control over Sirte last year. Earlier this week a separate force that guards key oil terminals east of Sirte also advanced towards the city, taking control of two small towns previously controlled by ISIS. In Sirte itself, a resident told Reuters that a senior cleric had toured the streets on Tuesday urging people to stay in the city and fight. Most of Sirte’s population of about 80,000 is thought to have fled, and the government-backed brigades have said they want to give those residents who remain a chance to escape before advancing into residential areas. The brigades had already seen 75 of their fighters killed and more than 350 wounded before the latest casualties.

Headline:  Venezuela police repel rare protest near presidential palace

A throng of protesters demanding food made a run for the Venezuelan presidential palace on Thursday in a rare, apparently spontaneous outburst of anger at the socialist administration within the heart of Caracas. More than 100 people charged down the main thoroughfare in central Caracas chanting “No more talk. We want food.” They got within about a half dozen blocks of the presidential palace before police in riot gear headed them off and began firing tear gas. Police pushed the protesters back as some kicked their plastic shields. More officers ran toward the scene and filled in the streets between the protesters and the palace. Onlookers leaned out of windows banging pots and yelling insults at the officers. The economically struggling county has seen near-daily spontaneous protests in recent weeks over shortages of food and medicine, rolling blackouts, and poor access to running water.

Somali security forces Thursday ended an overnight siege by extremist gunmen at a hotel in the capital which killed least 15 people, including two members of parliament, officials said. The assault started when a vehicle laden with explosives detonated outside the Ambassador Hotel Wednesday evening and three militants stormed inside the building, said the African Union Mission in Somalia. The AU multinational force is bolstering Somalia’s weak government against an insurgency by the Islamic extremist group Al Shabaab. Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, which sheared off the front of the luxury hotel and left blood spattered on bullet-marked walls. The twisted remains of dozens of vehicles ringed the site.

Headline:  Four UN staff killed in al-Qaeda attacks in Mali

Four members of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, known as MINUSMA, have been killed in two al-Qaeda attacks.   The UN mission said in a statement on Wednesday that a Chinese peacekeeper and three civilians– an international expert and two security guards–working for the MINUSMA were killed in the attacks in the northern town of Gao on Tuesday night. A source close to China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) told the South China Morning Post daily that security conditions in the region, namely the US military presence, would define the timing of the ADIZ declaration. “If the US military keeps making provocative moves to challenge China’s sovereignty in the region, it will give Beijing a good opportunity to declare an ADIZ in the South China Sea,” the source told the newspaper. The country’s Defense Ministry told the South China Morning Post in a written statement that it was “the right of a sovereign state” to designate an ADIZ.

The last time, we heard about a “mysterious hemorrhagic fever” in a country, it was February 2014. The outbreak was in Guinea. And by the time doctors had pinpointed the culprit, Ebola was spiraling out of control in West Africa. The situation in South Sudan today is a far cry from that in West Africa a few years ago. But it’s still concerning, the World Health Organization said. So far, there have been 51 cases — including 10 deaths — from an unknown disease in the northern part of South Sudan. The main symptoms of the disease are similar to those seen with Ebola: unexplained bleeding, fever, fatigue, headache and vomiting. But the culprit definitely isn’t Ebola. First, the symptoms “rapidly resolve following supportive treatment,” WHO said. And the disease doesn’t seem to spread from person to person. In fact, scientists don’t know yet how the disease is transmitted. Scientists have tested 33 of the cases for Ebola, and all of them came back negative. The samples also tested negative for other viruses known to cause unexplained bleeding, such as Marburg virus and Crimean-Congo fever.

Headline:  Indonesian earthquake causes injuries, damages buildings

A powerful earthquake off Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Thursday sent panicked people fleeing for higher ground and left eight people injured and scores of buildings damaged. The 6.5-magnitude quake hit around dawn, waking up residents of the major port city Padang on Sumatra’s west coast and sending them running from their homes. No tsunami warning was issued after the tremor, which struck around 140 kilometers (90 miles) from Padang, according to the US Geological Survey. In Padang two people were seriously injured by falling debris, said disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. He said in a nearby district six people were injured, while 54 houses and a hospital suffered mostly light damage around the region.

This increasing volcanic activity around the the Ring of Fire is not new, the region is home to 452 volcanoes, 75% of all earth’s, and geologists have been warning that this 25,000 mile stretch of active and dormant volcanoes is becoming more unstable in recent years.

Yair Golan, deputy chief-of-staff of the Israeli army, said that “if there is one thing which frightens me in remembering the Holocaust, it is the identification of the chilling processes that took place in Europe, particularly in Germany 70, 80 and 90 years ago, and finding evidence that they are taking place amongst us, here, today, in 2016.” This statement, and the support Golan received from Minister of Defense Moshe Ya’alon, has not only led to the resignation of the latter, it started an anti-government campaign in which leading journalists are now openly advocating a coups d’état. Peddling this idea are Nahum Barnea from the daily Yediot Aharonot and Zvi Bar’el from the daily Haaretz. Not surprisingly, those toying with this dangerous notion are leftists who cry endlessly about the dangers Israeli democracy faces from some vague “chilling processes” emanating from the Right. Ending democracy in order to save it is the logic behind this new fantasy. Interesting in this latest outcry is how, in a blink of an eye, the IDF that to date was treated by many leftists as criminal tool in the hands of the “occupation,” has become the darling of the Left by those perceiving that the deputy chief-of-staff has landed squarely in their camp. First to suggest that the cue for revolution had been given was Zvi Bar’el in his article “Toward Revolutionizing the Army” published earlier this month.

Netanyahu’s comments were a formal response to a speech last week by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who promised Israel warmer ties if it accepted efforts to resume peace talks. “The Arab peace initiative includes positive elements that can help revive constructive negotiations with the Palestinians,” Netanyahu said, echoing comments he made a year ago to Israeli reporters. “We are willing to negotiate with the Arab states on revisions to that initiative so that it reflects the dramatic changes in the region since 2002 but maintains the agreed goal of two states for two peoples,” he added. His comments were also  made in English during a speech that was mostly in Hebrew. Netanyahu spoke moments after Avigdor Lieberman was sworn in as Israel’s new defense minister and Israel’s fragile right-wing coalition gained support in parliament. Netanyahu appeared to indicate that the new far-right defense minister’s inclusion in the government did not spell an end to peace efforts with the Palestinians.

Saudi Arabia’s military said in a statement that several missiles had hit the Jizan border region, the first such strike in over a month, without wounding anyone. A truce between the warring parties that began April 10 has been deteriorating in recent days, with violations. The conflict in Yemen pits Shiite Houthi rebels and supporters of a former president against Yemen’s internationally recognized government, supported by a Saudi-led, U.S.-backed coalition. Al Arabiya news channel’s correspondent said Saudi Arabia’s army thwarted an attack on positions in Jazan. He added that skirmishes has erupted, and that Saudi forces repelled the attack by Houthi militias on Al Khubah and Tawal in Jazan. Days ago, the Saudi Interior Ministry said that one Saudi soldier was killed and three others were wounded when a landmine exploded on the border with Yemen. The blast hit a border patrol in the southwestern province of Jazan, the ministry said in a statement.

Egyptian security and hospital officials say a roadside bomb has struck a military armored vehicle in the restive northern part of the Sinai Peninsula, killing six soldiers. The officials say the attack on Tuesday also wounded six other soldiers. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State group, which is fighting army and security forces in northern Sinai. Militants have been battling security forces in that area for years, but their attacks have grown much deadlier and more frequent since the ouster in July 2013 of the Islamist Mohammed Morsi, Egypt’s first freely elected president, following mass protests against his divisive, one-year rule.

Syria Headline:      Kurdish-led force seizes ground from ISIS in Syria

US-backed Kurdish-led fighters have seized ground from the Islamic State jihadist group in Syria, a monitor said Tuesday, as the jihadists come under attack in their Fallujah bastion in neighboring Iraq. The Syrian Democratic Forces, who control a swathe of territory along the Turkish border, launched a push south towards the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa last week, capturing a string of villages in the north of Raqqa province. “The SDF has captured 12 villages… northwest of Raqqa in the past 36 hours,” Syrian Observatory for Human Rights chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. Abdel Rahman said that the villages lie 80 kilometers (50 miles) or more from Raqqa itself but that the jihadists’ de facto Syria capital was not the immediate goal. He said the target of the offensive was the town of Tabqa and its adjacent dam on the Euphrates River, which lie some 40 kilometers (25 miles) upstream. ISIS lost 18 fighters in the fighting on Monday, taking its losses since the start of offensive on May 24 to 79, he said. Among those killed were 24 child fighters from ISIS’s “Cubs of the Caliphate” recruitment program. The Observatory had no immediate word on SDF losses or any civilian deaths.

Iraqi forces thrust into the city of Fallujah from three directions on Monday marking a new and perilous urban phase in the week-old operation to retake the terrorist bastion. The drive to recapture the first city to be lost from government control in 2014 came as fighting also raged in neighboring Syria, leaving huge numbers of civilians exposed. Led by the elite counter-terrorism service (CTS), Iraq’s best trained and most seasoned fighting unit, the forces pushed into Fallujah before dawn, commanders said. “Iraqi forces entered Fallujah under air cover from the international coalition, the Iraqi air force and army aviation, and supported by artillery and tanks,” said Lt. Gen. Abdelwahab Al-Saadi, the commander of the operation. “There is resistance from Daesh,” he added. The forces have not yet ventured into the city center but they recaptured some areas in a southern suburb after crossing a bridge, and took up positions on the eastern and northern fringes. The only families who were able to flee so far lived in outlying areas, with the biggest wave of displaced reaching camps on Saturday night. “Our resources in the camps are now very strained and with many more expected to flee we might not be able to provide enough drinking water for everyone,” said Nasr Muflahi, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Iraq director. “We expect bigger waves of displacement the fiercer the fighting gets.”

Taliban militants overran several checkpoints in southern Helmand province and killed at least 25 policemen over the past two days, officials said Monday, in the first major assaults in the province since the insurgents named a new leader last week. While the Taliban made major inroads in Helmand last year, the violence had seemed relatively contained in recent months, after broad changes by the Afghan Army there and an influx of U.S. troops and advisers. But the fighting has once again intensified, with an increased tempo of attacks in the districts of Nad Ali, Gereshk, Sangin and Marja, as well as in Babaji, a suburb of the provincial capital Lashkar Gah. Gul Agha, a commander of Afghan Local Police militia forces in Gereshk district, said Taliban fighters overran five checkpoints in the district bordering the provincial capital, killed 12 fighters and executed their unit commander. “A local commander named Safar Muhammad Akka was dragged and hanged in Yakhchal area of Gereshk by Taliban,” Agha said. “He was an old man, but very anti-Taliban.” A regional police commander, Esmatullah Dawlatzai, put the death toll at 25 members of the national police and Afghan Local Police militia fighters, with an additional 15 wounded, across three districts over the past two days. The head of the Helmand provincial council, Abdul Karim Attal, said Monday that as many as 35 to 40 policemen were killed or wounded in the past 24 hours of fighting across several districts. Also, seven police officers were missing, presumably abducted by the Taliban. The attacks in Gereshk were launched Sunday night and lasted for many hours, said Hismatullah Daulatzai, head of police for the greater Helmand zone. Attal said the government had repeatedly announced operations to clear Taliban threats, but little progress had been made.

Headline:      Libyan oil guard says captures coastal town from Islamic State after clashes

A force that controls oil terminals in eastern Libya said it had captured the town of Ben Jawad from Islamic State, pushing the militant group back along a coastal strip they control east of their stronghold of Sirte. Spokesman Ali al-Hassi said five Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG) fighters had been killed and 18 wounded in fierce clashes in the coastal town, and that fighting was continuing in the nearby town of Nawfiliyah. A Ben Jawad resident told Reuters that PFG forces had entered the town and were combing the area to secure it. If the PFG can hold Ben Jawad it could prove significant, signaling the start of a new front in the campaign against Islamic State. The PFG has declared its support for Libya’s U.N.-backed unity government. Other brigades that back the government advanced last week to the outskirts of Sirte from the west. “We launched today’s attack to purge and liberate the central region from Daesh (Islamic State), and secure this area under the umbrella of the ministry of defense and the Presidential Council, the Supreme Commander of the Libyan army,” Hassi said. The Presidential Council is the unity government’s leadership.

A disfiguring tropical disease is sweeping across the Middle East as a combination of heavy conflict and a breakdown of health care facilities in Isis-occupied areas leaves swathes of people vulnerable to the illness. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by a parasite in the blood stream transmitted through sand fly bites. The disease can result in horrible open sores as well as disfiguring skin lesions, nodules or papules. Leishmaniasis has been endemic in Syria for centuries and was once commonly known as the “Aleppo evil”. However, as Syria’s civil war continues the resulting refugee crisis has triggered a catastrophic outbreak of the disease. Research published on Thursday in the scientific journal PLOS has found the disease is now affecting hundreds of thousands of people living in refugee camps or trapped in conflict zones. A similar situation may also be unfolding in eastern Libya and Yemen. “We’re seeing lots of diseases, including leishmaniasis in these conflict zones and we need to ring-fence them or risk another situation like Ebola out of the conflict zones in West Africa in 2014,” Peter Hotez, dean of the US National School of Tropical Medicine, US Science Envoy to the Middle East, and lead author of the PLOS research told the Digital Journal.
