Headline: Amid fear of Hezbollah attack, IDF walls off section of Lebanon border
Fearing plots by Hezbollah to send gunmen into Israel to attack soldiers and civilians, Israel is gradually walling off further parts of its northern border with Lebanon. Israel’s Channel 2 news on Wednesday showed sections of concrete wall being installed near to Kibbutz Misgav Am, a border community in the Upper Galilee. It noted that a project to bolster the border area had been underway for some time. In 2012, a seven-meter (23-foot) high wall separating Israel from Lebanon near the border town of Metulla was completed. The 1,200-meter-long (3,937-foot) wall is outfitted with sophisticated cameras and sensory equipment aimed at preventing infiltration. The 2006 Second Lebanon War began with a cross-border attack by Hezbollah. Wednesday’s footage was broadcast two days after the Israel Defense Forces began a surprise military exercise in northern Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated in Moscow alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday what he said on the Golan Heights on Sunday: the strategic plateau will always remain part of Israel. Netanyahu, who flew for the day to Moscow for a meeting with Putin, said during statements in the Kremlin beforehand that “we we cannot return to the days and times when our villages were shot at from the Golan Heights, therefore, whether within the framework of an agreement or without one, the Golan Heights will remain part of [Israeli] sovereign territory.” Netanyahu said earlier this week that his comments about the Golan Heights were necessary following a draft for a Syrian peace agreement circulated by the UN special envoy which called, in its very first clause, for Israel to return the Golan to Syria. The premier said that he had come to Moscow with one central goal: “to strengthen the security coordination between us to prevent mistakes, misunderstandings and unnecessary accidents” between Israeli and Russian forces operating in Syria.

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi called Thursday for a special criminal court to be set up for Israel, at a meeting to condemn an announcement that it will never cede the Golan Heights to Syria. Delegates to the 22-member Arab bloc based in Cairo are expected to pass a resolution denouncing Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s pledge Sunday that the Golan would remain Israeli “forever”. Israel liberated the Golan during the 1967 Middle East war with Syria, Egypt and Jordan, and annexed it in 1981, in a move never recognized by the international community. Israel was acting like “a country that is above the law and accountability”, Arabi told delegates at the start of the meeting. He demanded “a special criminal court for the Palestinian cause” to try Israel, like the ones set up for Serbian war crimes. Saudi Arabia’s ambassador in Cairo and delegate to the Arab League, Ahmed Qattan, accused Israel of trying to profit from the conflict in Syria – an ironic claim given Saudi Arabia’s own heavy intervention in Syria. “The Zionist entity is exploiting the years of crisis in Syria,” he said.

The French government will convene a summit in Paris on May 30 aimed at renewing the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, to be attended by dozens of foreign ministers. Israeli diplomats said that France updated Israel Thursday on the conference, and invitations will be sent to participants on Friday. The foreign ministers’ meeting will occur without the participation of Israeli and Palestinian representatives, ahead of the main international peace conference that France hopes to hold in Paris over the summer. Israeli diplomats said that in early May, senior diplomats from all participating countries will hold a preparatory meeting to discuss the foreign ministers’ meet. In recent months, French envoy Pierre Vimont has held a series of consultations with Israel, the Palestinians and a host of other countries in the European Union, the Arab world, the United States and Russia to hear their views regarding the peace conference initiative.

Headline: Hundreds of Palestinians march in support of Jerusalem bus bombing suspect
A mass demonstration took place on Wednesday as hundreds marched to the yard near the house of the family of the Palestinian teenager suspected of carrying out Monday’s Jerusalem bus bombing in a show of support for the young martyr. Abdel Hamid Abu Srour, 19, a resident of the Aida refugee camp near Bethlehem who is suspected of detonating an explosive on a bus in southern Jerusalem that left 20 others injured, died on Wednesday following multiple surgeries. Participants in the solidarity march chanted their support for Hamas saying, “Ayyash will come back”, referring to Yahya Ayyash. During Ayyash’s tenure, Hamas has carried out the most lethal suicide bombings ever to occurr in Israel. The crowd extolled Abu Srour, shouting “Prepare your swords, we are the sons of Mohammad Deif,” reffering to the top commander of Hamas’ military wing, who survived an assassination attempt by the IDF during Operation Protective Edge in August of 2014. The family of the suspected bomber announced that they would not be receiving condolences until they receive and bury his body.

Headline: Houthis agree to join Yemen peace talks in Kuwait
Iran-backed Houthi militants have finally agreed to join United Nations peace talks in Kuwait aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Yemen. “We will [seek to meet] the aspirations of our people to achieve dignity, independence and freedom,” Houthi leader Mahdi Al Mashat said in a statement on Facebook. Talks had been scheduled to start on Monday, but Houthi delegates didn’t show up. Anadolu Agency reported that the Shia group demanded an end to airstrikes being carried out in Yemen by a Saudi-led military coalition. They were also insisting on a “clear agenda.” Al Mashat said late Tuesday that they had received assurances from Kuwait and Oman that there would be an end to violations of a weeklong cease-fire in Yemen by the Saudi coalition.

Islamic State of Iraq and Levant’s (ISIL’s) affiliate in Egypt is suspected in an April 19 rocket attack that killed three Egyptian security personnel. Egypt’s Interior Ministry said a police vehicle was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by jihadists in the north Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid. Three riot policemen were killed and eight others wounded. Dozens of security personnel have been killed in attacks since the beginning of this year. Sinai Province, the ISIL affiliate in Egypt, has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks and the Interior Ministry said the April 19 attack bore the hallmarks of the ISIL affiliate. Meanwhile, Hamas bolsters security along Gaza border with Egypt saying the move is at request of Cairo; sides seeking to mend ties strained since ouster of Islamist Egyptian president Morsi.

Syria Headline: ISIS takes over key district after clashes with Syrian army in Deir ez-Zor
Subsequent to clashes with Syrian regime army forces, militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) were able Wednesday to control a key neighborhood in Syria’s eastern city of Deir ez-Zor. Amaq agency reported that ISIS militants took control of the last positions of the Assad’s forces in the Sinaa neighborhood of Deir ez-Zor, after fierce battles. Regime security posts in Sinaa fell to ISIS after the group killed more than 20 Syrian soldiers. Speaking to ARA News in Deir ez-Zor, media activist Mujahid Rifaee confirmed that ISIS militants hang the corpses of the soldiers in a public square in the neighborhood [Sinaa], vowing civilians not to stand beside the regime’s forces, otherwise they would be slaughtered. “They [ISIS militants] were filming the hanged corpses in order to boost their propaganda versions,” Refaee argued.

Kurdish Headline: Kurds raise an army to defend new federal region
Clutching rifles under a bright spring sun, the men are among thousands undergoing obligatory nine-month training to join the Autonomous Protection Forces. The APF, its commander-in-chief Renas Roza says, will be responsible for defending the federal region declared last month at a Kurdish-led conference. “This is the nucleus of a new army that will take up the defense of the federal region in northern Syria,” Roza tells AFP in his headquarters at Amuda near the border with Turkey. The clean-shaven commander sits under a large poster bearing the APF logo – a long, curved sword crossed over a rifle below a red five-point star. Roza says thousands of Kurdish, Arab and Syriac Christian men between the ages of 18 and 30 have completed the compulsory training. For the first two months, conscripts are taught military structure and tactics, and then have lessons on human rights and interaction with civilians. Turkish warplanes conducted two air operations against outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) targets in the southeastern provinces of Hakkari and Şırnak on April 21, the Turkish General Staff has announced. “On April 21, 2016, between 6:35 a.m. and 7 a.m., four F-16 fighter jets carried out an air operation on separatist terror organization [PKK] targets in the Dağlıca region [of Hakkari] as a result of evaluating intelligence and six F-16 jets carried out an air operation against PKK targets spotted in the rural area south of [the] Uludere [region of Şırnak] as a result of evaluating intelligence. Headline: US Supreme Court says terror victims can collect $2bn from Iran
The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a judgment allowing families of victims of the 1983 Marine barracks bombing in Beirut and other terrorist attacks to collect nearly $2 billion in frozen Iranian funds. The court on Wednesday ruled 6-2 in favor of more than 1,300 relatives of the 241 U.S. service members who died in the Beirut bombing and victims of other attacks that courts have linked to Iran. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote the opinion for the court rejecting efforts by Iran’s central bank to try to stave off court orders that would allow the relatives to be paid for their losses. The money is sitting in a federal court trust account. Iran’s Bank Markazi complained that Congress was intruding into the business of federal courts when it passed a 2012 law that specifically directs that the banks’ assets in the United States be turned over to the families. President Barack Obama issued an executive order earlier in 2012 freezing the Iranian central bank’s assets in the United States.

Headline: Afghanistan violence: Deadly bomb and gun attack hits Kabul
At least 28 people have been killed and 329 injured in a huge explosion in the centre of the Afghan capital Kabul, police and officials say. A suicide attacker detonated a vehicle and a fierce gun battle followed. Officials say the attack is now over and the area has been cleared. A Taliban spokesman said the group carried out the attack. It comes a week after it said it was launching its “spring offensive”, warning of large-scale attacks. Tuesday’s bombing happened during the morning rush hour in Pul-e-Mahmud, a busy neighbourhood where homes, mosques, schools and businesses nestle close to the Ministry of Defence, other ministries and military compounds. Soldiers and security officers are reported to be among the casualties, but the majority are civilians. The blast shattered windows up to 1.6km (one mile) away. The Associated Press quoted a police officer as saying it was one of the most powerful explosions he had ever heard, and he could not see or hear anything for 20 minutes after.

Shortly after Egypt handed over two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia in a controversial agreement, it is currently facing another territorial dispute, this time with its southern neighbor, Sudan. On Sunday, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry issued a statement about the Red Sea islands deal, affirming that following this agreement, Sudan should receive its right to sovereignty over the Hala’ib and Shalateen areas. Located in the Hala’ib Triangle in the south of Egypt, the two port cities have been contested by both Egypt and Sudan since Sudan gained independence from joint British-Egyptian rule in 1956. Sudan called on Egypt to negotiate over Hala’ib and Shalateen, or solve the dispute in the International Court of Arbitration, stating that it holds historical documents proving that it owns the territory. However, Egypt unequivocally refused to renounce its sovereignty over the Hala’ib Triangle. A statement issued on Wednesday by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry compared the Egyptian-Sudanese dispute to the Egyptian-Saudi dispute over Tiran and Sanafir, the two Red Sea islands. Egypt called on Sudan to imitate it, claiming that just like it handed over the islands to the Saudi Kingdom after they were under Egyptian administration for many years, so should Sudan, which governed the islands temporarily until 1990, return them to Egypt.

Headline: Eastern Libyan military’s jets hit Islamists in Derna
Military forces loyal to Libya’s eastern government said on Thursday they had carried out air strikes overnight against Islamist fighters in Derna after ISIS militants retreated from positions close to the city. Derna has been the site of a three-way conflict between the forces loyal to the eastern government, an Islamist grouping known as the Derna Mujahideen Shura Council and ISIS militants. Fighters from ISIS had controlled the city until the Shura Council forces pushed them out last June. The military has attacked both groups. Military spokesman Abdulkarim Sabra said the overnight air strikes had targeted Shura Council fighters in Derna’s Sayeda Khadija neighborhood and at Bishr prison. He made no comment on possible casualties. Shura Council spokesman Hafed Addabaa said the prison had held ISIS suspects and added that the strikes had not caused any casualties or damage. The military and the Shura Council both claimed credit for Wednesday’s withdrawal of ISIS from positions in Derna’s ‘district 400’ and al-Fatayeh to the south of the city. “We attacked Daesh (ISIS) in al-Fatayeh to recapture the area … The attack was from all sides except the south, which is where they fled,” said Addabaa. Five Shura Council fighters and six civilians were killed by mines and booby traps after they entered al-Fatayeh, he said. Sabra, the military spokesman, said ISIS had retreated because of a year-long blockade by the army and shelling by troops of the militants’ positions.

Gulf monarchies on Wednesday voiced support for Morocco’s claim over the Sahara during a joint summit in Riyadh, where Moroccan King Mohammed VI spoke of a “dangerous” situation. “We stress our support to all political and security causes that are important for your brotherly country, mainly the Sahara,” Saudi King Salman said at the opening of the summit of leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the North African nation. Headline: NATO security chiefs warn of ISIS plan for nuclear attack on Europe
Islamic State terrorists are plotting to carry out biological and nuclear attacks on Europe, warned NATO security experts on Wednesday, according to reports by the Telegraph. NATO security chiefs told participants of the Security and Counter Terror Conference in London that there is a ‘justified concern’ that Islamic State militants are actively working to obtain nuclear, radiological and biological materials. According to the experts, ISIS operatives are also developing new ways to avoid security measures to carry out bombings. These methods include planting bombs in human bodies and hacking self-driving cars, reported the Telegraph. “We know terrorists are trying to acquire these substances,” said NATO’s Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges Dr. Jamie Shea. Headline: North Korea may have restarted tunneling at key nuclear site
China is deploying troops along its border with North Korea, as Pyongyang could be preparing a fifth nuclear test ahead of its Seventh Party Congress in May. The Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy, a nongovernmental organization in Hong Kong, announced Wednesday that Beijing has dispatched 2,000 soldiers along the border, South Korean news service Newsis reported. China has previously deployed troops along its border with North Korea. In January after Pyongyang announced a “successful” hydrogen bomb test, China reportedly sent 3,000 soldiers to its northeastern region, and also sent troops during the North-South land mine provocation last August. In late 2013, China also dispatched troops in response to the execution of Kim’s uncle-in-law, Jang Sung Taek. The center also said more Chinese military personnel were stationed at two major observation posts, and the guards are acting as lookouts 24 hours a day.

Speaking after a meeting between NATO envoys and Russia, their first in almost two years, Moscow’s ambassador to NATO said the April 11 maritime incident showed there could be no improvement in ties until the U.S.-led alliance withdrew from Russia’s borders. “This is about attempts to exercise military pressure on Russia,” the envoy, Alexander Grushko, said. “We will take all necessary measures, precautions, to compensate for these attempts to use military force,” he told reporters. U.S. Ambassador to NATO Douglas Lute pressed Russia about the incident, warning it had been dangerous. The United States has said the guided missile destroyer USS Cook was on routine business near Poland when it was harassed by Russian jets.

Saudi Arabia is raising $10bn from a consortium of global banks as the kingdom embarks on its first international debt issuance in 25 years to counter dwindling oil revenues and reserves. The landmark five-year loan, a signal of Riyadh’s newfound dependence on foreign capital, opens the way for Saudi to launch its first international bond issue. It comes as the sustained slump in crude encourages other Gulf governments, such as Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Oman, to tap international bond markets. The oil-rich kingdom, which last weekend blocked a potential deal among oil producers to freeze output and bolster prices, has burnt through $150bn in financial reserves since late 2014 as its fiscal deficit is set to widen to 19 per cent of gross domestic product this year.Strong interest in the loan, especially from Asian banks, came despite rating agency downgrades on Saudi creditworthiness since the oil price collapsed. At least 330 million people are affected by drought in India, the government has told the Supreme Court. Authorities say this number is likely to rise further given that some states with water shortages have not yet submitted status reports. The drought is taking place as a heat wave extends across much of India with temperatures crossing 40C for days now. India is heavily dependant on monsoon rains, which have been poor for two years in a row. The government said that nearly 256 districts across India, home to nearly a quarter of the population were impacted by the drought. Schools have been shut in the eastern state of Orissa and more than 100 deaths due to heatstroke have been reported from across the country, including from the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh which saw more than 2,000 deaths last summer.

More than two billion people are at risk of Zika virus, experts warn, as they reveal a new map that indicates those areas at greatest risk. The southeastern US, including much of Texas to Florida, have ideal conditions for the virus to spread. In total, these areas are inhabited by more than 2.17 billion people, scientists at the University of Oxford and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle, estimate. Researchers produced a fine-scale global map of Zika virus transmission, as part of their study. They identified areas of the world with similar environment and socioeconomic characterstics as areas where the virus has so far been reported. They include areas that experience precipitation and have land cover, as well as complex temperature-based virus incubation models. Lead author, Janey Messina from Oxford University, said: ‘We have comprehensively assembled all the data for Zika occurrence in humans, displayed it as a map, and combined it with detailed predictions of where the virus could spread next. ‘Our global risk map reveals priority regions where authorities could intervene to control the vector population and where surveillance of the virus should be concentrated in order to improve rapid outbreak response and clinical diagnosis.’

Headline: New Elizabethkingia cluster found in Illinois
A new cluster of Elizabethkingia infection, previously rarely seen in humans, has been found in Illinois, health officials said Wednesday. Testing by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the Elizabethkingia anophelis infection in 10 Illinois residents, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Six of those individuals have died. Most of the infected patients had underlying health conditions, and it’s unknown if they died from the infection or pre-existing conditions. The Illinois cluster of cases is a different strain of infection from the one identified in an ongoing Elizabethkingia outbreak in Wisconsin, first reported in March. Fifty-nine cases have been confirmed in that state since November. Eighteen have died. Officials there have said all of those infected had “at least one serious underlying illness” and most are older than 65. The cases began in 2014.

China has unveiled its first interactive robot – which can chat away to humans and even take orders from iCloud. The incredibly life-like robot has taken three years to build and was proudly showed off recently. As a member of the media holds the camera, she says: “The photo taken from that angle with make my face look bigger”. The United States signalled its opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent declaration that the Golan Heights will forever remain a part of Israel, stressing on Monday that Washington did not consider the Golan a part of Israel. “Every administration on both sides of the aisle since 1967 has maintained that those territories are not part of Israel,” US State Department Spokesman John Kirby told reporters. Kirby went on to say that the conditions under which the Golan Heights should be returned must be decided through negotiations between the respective parties. “And obviously, the current situation in Syria makes it difficult to continue those efforts at this time,” Kirby said. Meanwhile, US Vice President Joe Biden acknowledged “overwhelming frustration” with the Israeli government and said the systemic expansion of Jewish settlements was moving Israel toward a dangerous “one-state reality” and in the wrong direction. Addressing J Street’s annual gala, Biden said despite disagreements with Israel over settlements or the Iran nuclear deal, the United States had an obligation to push Israel toward a two-state solution to end the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

Last month marked the hottest March in modern history and the 11th consecutive month in which a monthly global temperature record was broken, the longest such streak in the 137 years of record-keeping, US officials said Tuesday. The report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the globally averaged temperature over land and ocean surfaces for March 2016 “was the highest for the month of March in the NOAA global temperature dataset record, which dates back to 1880.” The average temperature planet-wide was 2.20 degrees Fahrenheit (1.22 Celsius) above the 20th century average of 54.9 F (12.7 C), the report said. “This surpassed the previous record set in 2015 by 0.58 F (0.32 C), and marks the highest monthly temperature departure among all 1,635 months on record.”

Headline: Church Leader’s Wife Buried Alive, Killed by Chinese Authorities for Protesting Church Demolition
A Christian house church leader and his wife were buried alive in China’s central Henan province for protesting against the government-ordered demolition of their church, and while the man managed to escape, his wife suffocated to death. China Aid reported on the grisly news on Monday, noting the tragedy occurred last week at Beitou Church in Zhumadian, Henan province. Communist government authorities reportedly ordered the demolition of the church after Li Jiangong, the person in charge of the church, and his wife, Ding Cuimei, refused to hand over the church grounds to a local developer. The husband and wife decided to try and stop the demolition and stepped in front of the bulldozing crew, but were purposefully shoved into a pit, where a bulldozer covered their bodies with soil. “Crying for help, Li was able to dig his way free, but Ding suffocated before she could be rescued,” the report stated. The two crew members responsible for the crime are said to have been detained by authorities, while a criminal investigation team from the public security bureau reviews their case. According to China Aid, one of the demolition team members was heard shouting out the order “bury them alive for me. I will be responsible for their lives.” China Aid President Bob Fu spoke about the vicius killing by saying, “bulldozing and burying alive Ding Cuimei, a peaceful and devout Christian woman, was a cruel, murderous act.”

Jordan’s prime minister says his government has decided to call off a plan to install surveillance cameras at a sensitive Jerusalem holy site. Abdullah Enour told the state-run Petra News Agency on Monday that Jordan had taken the step due to Palestinian concerns. Jordan offered to install the cameras last fall to help calm tensions after clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian protesters at the holy site, known as the Temple Mount to Jews and the Noble Sanctuary to Muslims. But the plan immediately ran into trouble amid Palestinian concerns that Israel would use the cameras to spy on activists. The Palestinians also objected to Israeli demands to place cameras inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Enour said Jordan respected the Palestinian objections, and “therefore we have decided to stop implementing it.”

A senior Israeli official revealed on Monday that Israel has halted all transfers of building material to Gaza as part of the ongoing effort to disrupt the construction of terror tunnels by Hamas. The report came just hours after the IDF announced the discovery of a terror tunnel leading into Israel from Gaza. The official estimated that given the discovery, Hamas would most likely be unable to launch any surprise operations against Israel in the near future. “Hamas is experiencing difficulties with their tunnels collapsing. We bested Hamas in Operation Protective Edge and ruined their plans,” the official said. The official emphasized that Israel was not looking to escalate tensions with Hamas. “As far as they’re concerned they penetrated into Israeli territory and thought that the situation had changed. This isn’t new. What’s new are our capabilities used in locating [the tunnels]. There are wide ranging operations to ensure the security of Israel and integrity of its borders.” Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said the discovery of the terror tunnel was a major victory for Israel. Now, Netanyahu said, “Gaza-area residents can relax.”

An explosion occurred on an Egged bus number 12 on Monday afternoon, causing it to catch on fire while it was driving on Moshe Baram Road in Jerusalem, in what the defense establishment suspects to be a terror bombing. The bus was travelling from the East Talpiot neighborhood (Armon HaNatziv) towards Mount Herzl when it exploded and caught fire. As a result of the explosion, a nearby bus also caught on fire as well as a private vehicle. Magen David Adom paramedics treated 18 wounded, among them two in serious condition, six in moderate condition and the rest lightly wounded. Some of the wounded are suffering from different degrees of burns, while most are suffering from smoke inhalation. The wounded were taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center and the Hadassah Medical Center’s Ein Karem and Mount Scopus hospitals.

Dozens of members of Hezbollah were killed last week in Aleppo in an “accidental” chemical attack carried out by the Syrian military, diplomatic sources reported to the Kuwaiti newspaper “Al-Jarida.” The report stated that Syrian fighter jets struck militants from the Shi’ite terror group when they mistakenly attacked the town of Al-Eis, south of Aleppo, in their efforts to retake the region. On the bodies of the dead militants were signs of burns that are typical of chemical explosives. “It is not the first time that coordination problems have arisen between the military police and the Russian military, Hezbollah and Iran. Incidents like this have happened repeatedly since the Russian forces entered into the conflict,” a diplomatic source said. The source added that, “What happened in Aleppo demonstrates an impending problem in regards to cooperation on the ground and the incident again brings up the issue of attacks on innocent people with unconventional weapons.”

Top officials from the State Department and Pentagon warned Senate Armed Services Committee staffers last month that the bill could bring economic risks to the U.S. The Saudis did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Asked if President Barack Obama would veto the legislation if passed by Congress, a senior administration official told CNN that “rather than entertain a hypothetical, we believe there needs to be more careful consideration of the potential unintended consequences of its enactment before proceeding with legislation.” “We would welcome opportunities to engage with the Congress on that discussion,” the official added.

Yemen’s Shiite rebels backed out of UN-brokered peace talks just hours before the negotiations were due to start on Monday in Kuwait, demanding an immediate halt to airstrikes by the coalition according to two officials who spoke to The Associated Press, on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters. It was not immediately clear if the negotiations were completely scuttled. According to two media officials linked to the Houthis, rebel representatives have delayed their trip to Kuwait. A UN-brokered cease-fire announced earlier this month has sought to facilitate the negotiations in Kuwait, though it has repeatedly been breached. Along with Sanaa, cities of Taiz, Marib and Jouf have seen most of the cease-fire violations. At the talks, the Houthis were widely expected to comply with a UN Security Council resolution demanding their militia withdraw from Yemeni cities, the handover of the rebels’ heavy weapons to government forces and the release of detainees. |

Protesters took the streets of Cairo April 15 chanting “Arhal” (“Leave”) — the same slogan that was ubiquitous during the January 25 Revolution when protesters called on then-President Hosni Mubarak to step down. Massive protests and sit-ins were organized in various parts of Cairo, including the city center, on the so-called Friday of the Land. The demonstrators objected to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s giving up ownership of the islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia during the recent visit of King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud to Egypt. The protesters chanted slogans such as “Bread, freedom and the islands are Egyptian,” a modification of the iconic “Bread, freedom and social justice” slogan of the revolution, and “Awad sold his land,” a reference to an Egyptian folktale about a man named Awad who brought his family shame by giving up the family farm. Other chants could be heard condemning the transfer of the Islands, which had been under Egyptian control. Despite the political and security measures that had succeeded in thwarting previous demonstrations, the protesters have returned to the streets to denounce Sisi’s policies. In the same squares that witnessed the outbreak of the January 25 Revolution, hundreds of protesters rallied and marched to various locations in downtown Cairo, with thousands gathering in front of the Journalists Syndicate after the security forces closed and denied access to Tahrir Square.

Syria Headline: Rebels launch attacks in western Syria, heavy government air raids: activist
Syrian rebel groups launched a new offensive against government forces on Monday and some accused the United Nations of bias, imperiling peace talks already threatened by fighting. On Monday, rebels launched a fierce attack against Syrian government forces in Latakia province, which lies on the Mediterranean coast, and made separate advances further east in Hama, while there were heavy government airstrikes in Homs province to the south. Rebel groups early in the day announced a new battle against government forces which they said was in response to ceasefire violations. The Latakia and Hama assaults appeared to be that battle, with some of the groups that made the announcement involved in the fighting, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said. A Syrian military source confirmed intense fighting in the area. “Today they attacked in the northern Latakia countryside in several areas, in violation of the cessation of hostilities agreement, and also in the northwestern Hama countryside,” the military source said. The Observatory reported that in northern Homs province heavy government airstrikes killed four people, and said the death toll was expected to rise, with more people wounded.

ISIS has come under attack by unknown assailants in a town along the Euphrates River, the latest in a series of mystery strikes targeting the jihadist group in eastern Syria. “Unidentified gunmen attacked an ISIS headquarters in Subeykhan in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, leading to the death of at least one ISIS before the [assailants] fled,” activist told the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights in a report published Monday. The monitoring NGO did not go into details on the murky incident, which follows on the heels of a number of similar operations in the desert region. The pro-rebel Shaam News also covered the attack, but did not provide more details than the SOHR report. Subeykhan lies approximately 18 kilometers southeast of Al-Mayadeen, a town where ISIS has been attacked a number of times, forcing the group at one time to put the area on lockdown. As with previous attacks in the Deir Ezzor province, the identity of the gunmen remains unknown and no group has yet to claim responsibility.

The new plan, expected for weeks, would mark the first major increase in U.S. forces in nearly a year. Last June the Obama administration announced that hundreds of troops would be deployed to help the Iraqis retake Ramadi — a goal they accomplished at the end of the year.

The demonstrators set out running from the sit-in site, crossed Jumhuriyah Bridge and gathered at the Green Zone entrance near parliament. Powerful Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr organised a two-week sit-in at the Green Zone in March, calling for a technocratic government and threatening to have his supporters storm the area. Iraq Headline: ISIS renews chemical attacks on Peshmerga forces northern Iraq
Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Sunday launched an offensive on positions for the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq, using rockets filled with chlorine gas, according to local sources. At least one fighter from the Kurdish Peshmerga forces was killed and four more wounded in the attack. Local activists confirmed that ISIS attacked the Peshmerga forces in the fighting front of Kweir in Makhmur district with chemical weapons, killing the Kurdish fighter Jaffar Omar Karim and wounding four others, who suffered suffocation. Iraqi Kurdistan authorities said in a medical report that the corps of Karim and his face was exposed to burns, without the emergence of any traces of bullets in his body. In the meantime, Kurdistan Regional Security Council (KRSC) has reported earlier that the ISIS hardline group has repeatedly used chemical weapons against the Peshmerga forces on several fighting fronts in the region.

Headline: Turkey returns fire after shell from Syria lands in southern Hatay province
The Turkish government’s war against PKK militants in the southwestern part of the country has turned out to be a deadly crackdown against Kurdish civilians not only in Turkey, but across the border in Syria, RT reported. Kurdish civilians living in northern Syria have been attacked by Turkish forces waging war against the PKK in southern Turkey. People have suffered daily from cross-border shelling, RT said. “At least two people including a child have been killed in Qamishli, as a result of the cross-border artillery fire, which has continued at regular pace since early March… On average more than 10 shells hit Qamishli daily,” RT reported, citing a journalist on the ground, Akram Barkat. The journalist managed to get information from the town of Qamishli, which is situated some 200 meters away from the position of the Turkish Army.

Headline: Iran, Europe pressuring US to grant Tehran access to financial markets
Iranian and European officials say that they are pushing the United States to grant the Islamic Republic unprecedented access to American financial markets and the U.S. dollar, working against promises by top Obama administration officials who had claimed Iran would never be granted such access, according to recent remarks. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, speaking at a joint press conference this weekend with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, said that officials are pressuring the U.S. to grant Iran access to American markets. “Iran and the EU will put pressure on the United States to facilitate the cooperation of non-American banks with Iran,” Zarif was quoted as saying at a briefing with reporters and Mogherini. Both Iran and the EU said in a joint statement later in the day that the United States must work hard to uphold its obligations under the recent nuclear deal. The White House has argued that it is not mandated to provide dollar access under the agreement.

Twelve people, including three children, were killed when Afghan and U.S. forces conducted a raid on the house of a suspected Al Qaeda member in east Afghanistan, according to a confidential report and people familiar with the matter. The Wall Street Journal reviewed an Afghan interior ministry incident report that detailed the early Friday operation in eastern Logar province. The report said the operation was conducted by coalition forces, a term used to refer to the U.S. force that maintains a presence in the country and works with the Afghan army. It didn’t detail whether Afghan forces were present. A U.S. coalition member said the operation was jointly conducted by Afghan and U.S. military forces. The Afghan defense ministry declined to comment. The report said the night raid targeted a suspected Al Qaeda operative named Abu Abdullah. The operation took place in Kharwar district, an insurgent stronghold. Two people were seized at the house along with weapons, phones and a fake passport, the report said.

Ethiopia says armed men have killed 140 people near its border with South Sudan and abducted at least 39 children. Ethiopia’s Communications Minister Getachew Reda said the attackers were members of South Sudan’s Murle tribe. He said security forces were chasing the attackers and had killed 60 so far. Ethiopia is hosting thousands of South Sudanese refugees who fled the 2013 clashes that began when President Salva Kiir sacked his deputy Riek Machar, accusing him of plotting a coup. Mr Machar denied the charges, but then mobilised a rebel force to fight the government. He is due to return to the capital Juba to form a transitional government as part of a peace deal. Mr Getachew told the BBC the attackers were not thought to have any links to the South Sudanese government or rebels.

Headline: Libya’s eastern army makes further advances around Benghazi
Libyan forces have recaptured key areas in the city of Benghazi, building on earlier advances during weeks of clashes with Islamist militants and other opponents. Troops allied with the government based in eastern Libya took control of a cement factory and cemetery in El Hawari district, where fighters loyal to Islamic State had been holding out, said Milad al-Zawie, a spokesman for the government forces. The troops also took a camp behind Garyounis university, which they captured on Sunday, Zawie said. Five soldiers were killed and nine wounded in the Benghazi fighting, he said. The country has been split since then between two governments, one in Tripoli and one in the east. Various armed groups are allied with both governments, and Islamist militants have inserted themselves into the conflict. A U.N.-backed unity government arrived in Tripoli last month, and is trying to establish itself by winning over opponents in both the east and west of the country.

Headline: Azerbaijan, Armenia accuse each other of ceasefire violations
Azerbaijan’s defense ministry said on Monday Armenia’s forces have violated ceasefire 115 times over the past 24 hours, while Yerevan said it has registered around 50 ceasefire violations on the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh by Baku overnight. Azerbaijan said its army positions located along the border between the two countries and in Nagorno-Karabakh have come under fire. Armenian forces also used 60-mm mortars and large-caliber machine guns, the ministry said. Azerbaijan’s forces retaliated with 116 fire strikes on the Armenian positions. Armenia’s defense ministry said “overnight the situation on the line of contact of the conflicting Karabakh and Azerbaijani forces remained the same.” Azerbaijan opened fire from various types of small arms and also used 82-mm mortars in the northeastern direction, it said.

In Rio, the timing of pro- and anti-impeachment rallies alongside Copacabana Beach was staggered to minimize potential conflicts. On Sunday morning, a few thousand anti-impeachment protesters—most dressed in red, the color of Ms. Rousseff’s Workers’ Party—shouted slogans like “There Will Be No Coup,” while listening to speeches and baile funk music. “I’m here to respect democracy, a system that we’ve only been living with for 30 years,” said Eliane Ferreira, 63, a retired teacher. “And I’m here in favor of a government that did so much for the middle class. They took 40 million people out of poverty.” Ms. Rousseff is accused of violating Brazil’s budget laws by trying to mask the true size of the nation’s budget deficit. At least four civilians were killed in the Somali capital on Monday when Islamist militants opened fire on government officials in a car and then a car bomb exploded, police and a spokesman for Mogadishu’s mayor said. Chinese military has carried out a series of extensive military drills in South China Sea in a move which could trigger more tensions with its South Asian neighbors. China’s PLA Daily said on Sunday that some upgraded methods that resemble actual combat conditions were used in the drills to increase the combat effectiveness of Beijing’s South China Sea fleets. The daily said in its article that the new methods included training within an electromagnetic environment. It said other tactics such as all-weather drills, beyond visibility range training and low-altitude, high-speed exercises to hammer the fleets’ pilots into shape were previously exercised.

Headline: Defaults hit highest level since ’09 bust
Get ready to step over some landmines, investors. The number of companies defaulting on their debt is hitting levels not seen since the financial crisis, and it’s not just a problem for bondholders. So far this year, 46 companies have defaulted on their debt, the highest level since 2009, according to S&P Ratings Services. Five companies defaulted this week, based on the latest data available from S&P Ratings Services. That includes New Jersey-based specialty chemical company Vertellus Specialties and Ohio-based iron ore producer Cliffs Natural. Of the world’s defaults this year, 37 are of companies based in the U.S. Meanwhile, coal producer Peabody Energy (BTU) and surfwear seller Pacific Sunwear (PSUN) this week filed plans for bankruptcy protection. Shares of Peabody have dropped 97% over the past year to $2 a share and Pacific Sunwear stock is off 98% to 4 cents a share. The implosion of oil prices is the top reason for the rise in defaults as it makes it harder for energy companies to repay debt. The Federal Reserve’s decision to hike short-term interest rates last year along with slowing global growth are also putting pressure on companies’ ability to service their debt.

An outbreak of yellow fever in Angola in which hundreds have already died could be “a threat to the entire world”, the World Health Organisation has warned. Cases of the mosquito-borne virus were first reported in Angola’s capital Luanda in December. The disease has now spread to 16 of the country’s 18 provinces. So far, thousands of people are suspected to have been infected with the disease and 238 people have died, WHO has reported. “The evolution of the situation in Angola is concerning and needs to be closely monitored,” it stated in a report.

Headline: Tornado kills 4, injures hundreds in Uruguay
A tornado ripped through the southwestern Uruguay city of Dolores, killing four people and leaving hundreds injured, government officials said. More than 200 people suffered injuries and about 400 structures have been affected, said Sen. Guillermo Besozzi. Images from the city showed overturned cars piled on top of one other, shattered windows and decimated buildings. The tornado hit the city about 4 p.m. local time Friday. The National Institute of Meteorology has yet to determine the scale of the tornado. “There are businesses in the center of the city, completely destroyed. Schools, churches destroyed. This is something never seen before. This is something out of the normal for our country,” Besozzi said. Mariela Umpiérrez, a resident of Dolores, told CNN en Español that her house, office car and those of her relatives were damaged. “The images seems taken out of a movie, but not from reality,” she said. The Uruguay government pledged to send emergency help to the affected areas. There have been some looting in the area, but the government has sent officers to address it, Besozzi said.

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano has seen a dramatic overnight explosion that sent ash blowing over the major city of Puebla directly to the east, forcing closure of the city’s airport. Yesterday I told you more earthquakes are coming soon. After I left you that message around 2:30 pm Pacific time there was another huge quake which was a 6.2 in Japan and now I just saw there was still another strong quake that just hit this morning in Guatemala . The red flag is up and see how many quakes were reported yesterday at this site.

that what I had warned about was right on the mark because the news just reported there was a massive
earthquake that just hit Japan . This quake was a 7.0!

Update 16:22 UTC : Sadly enough we have to report that at least 3 people have been killed in the earthquake(s). Scientists warn for strong to very strong aftershocks (something that happened already). 12 people have been injured and 1 person was unconscious. 600 people had to be evacuated from their houses.

What we know from Obama is that if America stays on course she will collapse from the massive debt which can not be paid off. Go ahead and vote for Hillary and let Hillary pick up where Obama left off and in a short period of time America’s economy will collapse. I think Obama is glad he is leaving office because when America’s currency dies he can blame it all on Hillary.
There is no way America can survive much longer by giving millions of America all their entitlements they have been getting for free. The number of people getting these entitlements has gotten so large that those working to pay for all the free programs can not sustain them much longer. So, go ahead and elect Hillary because as long as the USA is the main world power I can not see how the Antichrist can take his role as head of the entire world economy. However, when you see the U.S. dollar die, when you see the U.S. reserve currency fall America will find itself holding money that isn’t worth the paper it was printed on. Just ask people living in Greece, Venezuela, or Puerto Rico what their currency looks like as their debt is about to bring them all crashing down. What have you seen from Greece, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico? You have seen people in despair, people running on the banks and, riots. When America crashes this is what you will see in America.
Think this can not happen in America? Look at the past and the great depression, people living back then didn’t think they would face what they faced but on Black Friday all that changed in one day. The same thing is heading toward America again. There are now to many holes in the dam. The water is leaking out faster than their are leaders fingers to stop the leaks. Let me give you another example how how fast things can change in a nation of wealth! Let us take a look at what is currently happening in Saudi Arabia when it comes to their currency power. The Pentagon wants to cut the number of US peacekeeping troops in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, partly because of the growing threat from ISIS group, an official said Tuesday. About 700 US troops participate in a UN operation established after Israel and Egypt signed a 1979 peace deal and agreed for a Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) mission to monitor compliance. The mission has historically been somewhat low-key, but in recent months attacks from ISIS militants have put forces on a state of constant high alert. In September for instance, a roadside bombing injured six peacekeepers including four Americans. Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said the Pentagon remains “fully committed” to the MFO mission but wants to use drones and other high-tech tools to assume some of the riskier work. “I don’t think anyone is talking about a wholesale withdrawal, I think we are just going to look at the number of people we have there and see if there are functions that can be automated,” Davis said. An explosion just outside the southern Lebanese city of Sidon on Tuesday killed a local Palestinian security official amid tensions between the main Palestinian faction and extremist groups. The blast instantly killed the official, a member of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah group. Lebanese officials identified the man as Fathi Zeidan, Fatah’s security chief in the refugee camp of Mieh Mieh, which is located near Sidon. The explosion occurred after a security meeting in Mieh Mieh that was attended by Zeidan, during which the bomb was believed to have been placed inside his car. The bomb weighed nearly 1 kg and the force of the blast destroyed Zeidan’s car and scattered his remains. The Lebanese Armed Forces issued a statement, saying the bomb was placed inside the BMW and adding that an investigation was underway.

Syria Headline: Jabhat Al-Nusra abandons several fronts to fight Hezbollah in Aleppo After three days of fighting with rebels in Aleppo that started in the northern suburbs and spread to towns and villages north of the Syrian city, ISIS fighters captured the areas of Tel Ahmar, Tel Shaeer and Shaheen farms on Wednesday. The rebels from the al-Sham organization suffered heavy losses in the fighting, with more than 70 dead and over 150 wounded who were mostly left behind and taken prisoner by ISIS. The terrorist organization also captured the village of al-Raee, located on the Turkish border about 30 kilometers from Aleppo. ISIS is now trying to capture the city of al-Bab on the road from Aleppo to the Syrian border city of Jarablus in an attempt to create a supply corridor east of Aleppo and achieve military superiority in the area. Jarablus is a main point of entry for foreign fighters who come to Syria to join the terrorist organization.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on April 12 “the crash of a Russian Mi-28H attack helicopter near the city of Homs“ the previous night. The two pilots were killed in the crash, and their bodies were recovered by Russian special forces who transferred them to Hmeimim airbase in northern Syria. The ministry asserted that “the helicopter was not shot down” but debkafile’s intelligence and aviation sources doubt that claim. The helicopter that crashed in Homs was the fourth Russian-made military aircraft to be shot down during the last 30 days by advanced shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles possessed by the Nusra Front, ISIS and other groups of fighters. The speculation that terrorist organizations in Syria, and apparently in Iraq, possess such missiles capable of overcoming the defenses of Russian aircraft became reality when the Mi-28H helicopter was shot down on April 11. The aircraft is equipped with the most advanced defensive system of its kind, the President-S, which is resistant to active and passive jamming.

Syria Headline: Syrian Air Force destroys ISIL’s largest training camp in southern Deir Ezzor
The Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAF) carried out a special mission today inside the Deir Ezzor Governorate’s southern countryside, striking the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s (ISIL) largest training camp at the city of Mohassan. According to a military source at the Deir Ezzor Military Airport, the Syrian Air Force destroyed the entire ISIL training camp and its nearby barracks that housed as many as 200 terrorists at its peak. The number of dead terrorists as a result of the airstrike is unknown. A hundred members of Iraq’s parliament held a sit-in on Wednesday, demanding that the volatile country’s president, prime minister and parliamentary speaker all be removed. The parliamentary sit-in comes after a vote on a cabinet reshuffle the day before on Tuesday turned chaotic, amid outrage over how Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s promises to reform the government appear unlikely to happen, reports The New Arab. Abadi had promised to form a technocratic government based on qualified candidates, and not one controlled by political blocs in a sectarian quota system according to which ministerial posts and seats are allocated along Shia, Sunni and Kurdish sectarian lines. But on Monday the prime minister signed a pledge with the heads of leading political parties, promising to consult them in forming a new government in what critics called a declaration to keep the status quo. In the shadow of popular protests on the street, opposing MPs on Tuesday charged that the new lineup of ministers presented by Abadi was merely a continuation of the sectarian quota system which has led to rampant corruption. The Islamic State destroyed a 2,000-year-old ancient structure near the Iraqi city of Mosul called the Mashqi Gate, also known as the Gate of God. The Mashqi Gate in the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh dated back to the 7th century B.C. during the rule of Sennacherib, former king of Assyria. Nineveh was once one of the largest cities in the world and is referenced in the Bible. The Islamic State reportedly used military equipment to destroy the gate. A source from the British Institute for the Study of Iraq confirmed to The Independent that the gate had been attacked. The militant Islamist group has made a habit of razing and destroying cities, and ancient cultural icons in the territories it acquires. In the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria, the Islamic State immediately began demolishing ancient ruins considered among the world’s most treasured when it seized control in May last year.

At least six Iraqi soldiers were wounded in an assault carried out by the Islamic State (ISIS) militants in western Makhmour, a Kurdish Peshmerga official told Rudaw on Wednesday. “On Wednesday afternoon ISIS launched an assault on the Iraqi army in Nasr village, northern Makhmour front,” Sirwan Barzani, the Peshmerga commander of the Gwer-Makhmour region, told Rudaw. “ISIS used a car bomb for the attack and wounded six Iraqi soldiers in the process,” Barzani explained. The Peshmerga commander said fierce fighting between ISIS and Iraqi army lasted an hour-and-a-half. Last week the Iraqi army announced that the anticipated offensive to liberate al-Nasr village from ISIS had been postponed. Bashdar Aziz, a deputy commander in the Iraqi Army, said a multitude of problems were undermining their ability to effectively launch an offensive to retake al-Nasr. Six Turkish soldiers and 30 Kurdish militants have been killed in the past 24 hours in attacks and clashes across Turkey’s turbulent southeast region, security sources and the army said on Tuesday. An estimated 57 people, including eight civilians, were wounded in the attacks, they said. The security sources said operations in Sirnak province and in neighboring Iraq and Syria had been stepped up and that gunfire and explosions could be heard in the area where earlier one soldier was killed and three others wounded. A soldier was also killed and four wounded in an explosion in Daglica, a village in Hakkari province near the Iranian border, during clashes with the PKK, the army said. Two soldiers were also killed during clashes with the PKK in the border town of Nusaybin near Syria, the army said in a statement later on Tuesday. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu put the death toll from a car bomb attack overnight that targeted a Turkish gendarmerie base in the town of Hani at two. At least eight people were killed Monday and early Tuesday in U.S. airstrikes targeting al-Shabab militants in southern Somalia. Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said unmanned drones were used in the attacks. Witnesses and officials told VOA’s Somali service that five militants and three civilians were killed in the airstrikes, which hit the al-Shabab-controlled village of Yontoy in Somalia’s Lower Juba region. The Pentagon spokesman put the death toll at 12 militants. He described the airstrikes as “self-defense,” saying the targets of the attack “were posing an imminent threat to U.S. personnel.” It was not immediately known whether any al-Shabab leaders were hit. A high-ranking security official in Kismayo told VOA that al-Shabab militants were seen making “some movements” before the airstrike.

Jihadist groups operating in the West African country of Mali have launched a spate of attacks in the northern portion of the country in recent days. Many of these assaults targeted UN forces operating there, however, one targeted French special forces who are in the country as part of France’s Operation Barkhane. The French special forces soldier, identified as Mickael Poo-Sing by the French military, was killed near the northern town of Tessalit yesterday when his vehicle hit an IED. Three other French soldiers were killed in the blast. While this is the only attack in the area that targeted French forces, it is not the only ambush to occur in recent days. In addition to the IED on the French in Tessalit, a UN vehicle also hit a roadside bomb just north of Aguelhok reportedly killing two. While in the city of Aguelhok, a Chadian soldier stepped on a landmine according to local sources. Days earlier on April 9, Ansar Dine, which is a front for al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), claimed two bombings on the Aguelhok-Tessalit axis just north of the city of Kidal. The first, which occurred on April 7, the Tuareg jihadist group claimed targeting Chadian forces with an IED near the town of Taghlit. The next day, according to Ansar Dine, the jihadists did the same to an unspecified UN vehicle in the same area. Jihadist forces also directed their attention to civilian enemies, as well. Near the Algerian border town of Bordj Badji Mokhtar, a Tessalit government official was reportedly assassinated by jihadists two days ago.

Police on the southern island of Mindanao recovered the decapitated corpses of the two men on Tuesday, nine days after they were taken, said the police chief of Lanao del Sur province. “Salvador Hanobas and Jemark Hanobas were beheaded by their abductors,” Senior Superintendent Rustom Duran told reporters by telephone. “Locals brought the heads and the torsos to the mayor’s office.” It was unclear if the two victims were related. Duran said the kidnappers belonged to an Islamic terrorist group that battled government forces for a week in February, leaving three soldiers dead and forcing 20,000 people to flee their homes. Police found black flags identical to those flown by Islamic State jihadists in Iraq and Syria in the fighters’ hideout in the remote Mindanao town of Butig.

China has said G7 nations should “stop making irresponsible remarks” after foreign ministers released a statement on maritime territorial disputes. The ministers, meeting in Japan, said they opposed “any intimidating coercive or provocative unilateral actions” that could increase tension. China claims almost all the South China Sea and areas of the East China Sea, angering neighbours who have competing claims. It has also been reclaiming land. Experts say satellite images of the reclamation work could indicate that China may be steadily militarising the islands it is creating or expanding.

Headline: Russia jets make ‘simulated attack’ passes near US destroyer: US
Two Russian warplanes with no visible weaponry flew simulated attack passes near a U.S. guided missile destroyer in the Baltic Sea Tuesday, a U.S. official said, describing it as one of the most aggressive interactions in recent memory. The repeated flights by the Sukhoi SU-24 warplanes, which also flew near the ship a day earlier, were so close they created wake in the water, with 11 passes, the official said. A Russian KA-27 Helix helicopter also made seven passes around the USS Donald Cook, taking pictures. The nearest Russian territory was about 70 nautical miles away in its enclave of Kaliningrad, which sits between Lithuania and Poland. “They tried to raise them (the Russian aircraft) on the radio but they did not answer,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity, adding the U.S. ship was in international waters.

Many people have lost trust in “entire institutions, whether national or European,” EU parliament Chief Martin Schulz says. He sounded the alarm over a possible “implosion of the EU” due to the underestimated Euroskeptic movements in member states. “Europe has been on a sliding slope for some time now. Many people’s trust in institutions, whether national or European, has gone,” Schulz said in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper. “Hardly any of the governments is fighting to reach the hearts of the people,” Schulz said, blaming heads of states and administrations for the loss of confidence. There is a high risk of an “implosion of the EU,” Schulz added. “If the British leave the EU, there will be [other] demands for further escape referendums,” he warned.

Global policy makers need to guard against a self-reinforcing “spiral” of weakening growth and rising debt that could require a coordinated response by the world’s major economies, according to the IMF’s top fiscal watchdog. Most countries are on a higher debt path than they were a year ago, the International Monetary Fund said in its semi-annual Fiscal Monitor report released Wednesday. Fiscal deficits in 2015-2016 in emerging economies are projected to exceed levels during the global financial crisis, as countries struggle with low oil prices, cooling investor sentiment and intensifying geopolitical tensions. The warning on countries’ debt reinforces the fund’s message in two other reports this week that the world risks slipping to stagnation without strong action by policy makers, who are gathering in Washington for spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank. If gross domestic product growth in advanced economies slides further, that would raise public and private debt levels as a proportion of output, said Vitor Gaspar, head of the IMF’s fiscal-affairs department.

Headline: Yellow fever spreads to DR Congo, kills 21
An outbreak of yellow fever has killed 21 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Health Organization (WHO) says, linking some cases to an outbreak in neighbouring Angola. In a statement, the WHO said the deaths had occurred in January to March, with 151 suspected cases recorded. There was, it said, a “serious risk of further spread of the disease” in DRC. The acute, mosquito-borne viral disease has killed 225 people in Angola and infected about 1,600 there. The WHO said the DRC health authorities had set up a national committee to respond to the outbreak, including “screening and sanitary controls” on the country’s borders.

Headline: Dozens Dead From Elizabethkingia Outbreak
A death in Illinois has been linked to the same strain of bacteria that has caused an unprecedented outbreak of infection in Wisconsin and one case in Michigan. The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Tuesday an Illinois resident died after contracting an infection from the bacterium Elizabethkingia. The department’s been working with federal and state health officials to investigate the outbreak. The Illinois resident who died was from the northern part of the state and had underlying health conditions. Wisconsin is reporting 57 confirmed cases, including 18 deaths. Michigan reports one confirmed case, including one death.

The Church of Norway voted at its annual conference on Monday to allow gay marriage, with the Christian body joining the French Protestant Church, the U.S. Episcopal and Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) denominations, among others, in now supporting same-sex unions. Of the 115 delegates at the Lutheran denomination’s synod, 88 backed embracing gay marriage, while also including a caveat for priests who do not wish to take part in same-sex weddings that allows them to opt out of doing so, Reuters reported. The denomination itself called the institutional change “a historic decision that marks a shift in the church’s teaching on marriage,” with the vote reportedly receiving a standing ovation from most of the participants in attendance.

Headline: Astronomers in South Africa discover mysterious alignment of black hole
Deep radio imaging by researchers in the University of Cape Town and University of the Western Cape, in South Africa, has revealed that supermassive black holes in a region of the distant universe are all spinning out radio jets in the same direction – most likely a result of primordial mass fluctuations in the early universe. The astronomers publish their results in a new paper in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The new result is the discovery – for the first time – of an alignment of the jets of galaxies over a large volume of space, a finding made possible by a three-year deep radio imaging survey of the radio waves coming from a region called ELAIS-N1 using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in India. The jets are produced by the supermassive black holes at the centres of these galaxies, and the only way for this alignment to exist is if supermassive black holes are all spinning in the same direction, says Prof Andrew Russ Taylor, joint UWC/UCT SKA Chair, Director of the recently-launched Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy, and principal author of the Monthly Notices study.

Twenty-four new deaths were reported from a heatwave in India’s eastern Odisha state, bringing the nationwide total this week to 135, officials said Wednesday. The deaths were caused by sunstroke, as temperatures of 105.5 degrees Fahrenheit were recorded Tuesday at 19 locations across the state. The highest was 121.1 degrees Fahrenheit in the town of Titilargth. The temperature Monday in Bhubaneswar, a city of 800,000 and Odisha’s capital, rose to 114.44 degrees Fahrenheit. The heatwave extends across much of northern India, and traditional April rains have been delayed by the unusually high temperatures.
