Headline: Trump pledges to move US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

Headline: Chinese President Calls for East Jerusalem as Capital of Palestinian State

Donald Trump said he would move the US Embassy to Jerusalem. “They want it in Jerusalem,” the front-runner among Republican presidential candidates said in an interview posted Tuesday by The Brody File, a Christian Broadcasting Network show. “Well I am for that 100 percent. We are for that 100 percent.” David Brody, the CBN journalist, had asked Trump whether he agreed with GOP rivals, including Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who have pledged to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem once elected. Trump’s agreement seemed to be an about-face from remarks in December at the Republican Jewish Coalition, when the real estate magnate refused to commit to recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital. Speaking over boos at that event, Trump said it was foolish to harden positions ahead of talks. “You can’t go in with the attitude ‘we’re gonna shove it down your,’ you’ve got to go in and get it and do and do it nicely, so that everybody’s happy,” he said there. Congress passed a law in 1995 mandating the move of the embassy to Jerusalem, but allowed the president a waiver. Each president since then has routinely exercised the waiver, citing the national security interests of the United States.

Headline: Israel says will seize West Bank land

Israel confirmed on Thursday it was planning to appropriate a large tract of fertile land in the occupied West Bank, close to Jordan, a move likely to exacerbate tensions with Western allies and already drawing international condemnation. In an email sent to Reuters, COGAT, a unit of Israel’s Defence Ministry, said the political decision to seize the territory had been taken and “the lands are in the final stages of being declared state lands”. The appropriation, covers 154 hectares (380 acres) in the Jordan Valley close to Jericho, an area where Israel already has many settlement farms built on land Palestinians seek for a state. It is the largest land seizure since August 2014. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon denounced the move and Palestinian officials said they would push for a resolution at the United Nations against Israel’s settlement policies. “Settlement activities are a violation of international law and run counter to the public pronouncements of the government of Israel supporting a two-state solution to the conflict,” Ban said in a statement. The land, in an area fully under Israeli civilian and military control and already used by Jewish settlers to farm dates, is situated near the northern tip of the Dead Sea.

Headline: IDF Redeploys to West Bank Positions and Checkpoints It Shuttered Years Ago

Headline: IDF deploys artillery battery on Gaza border

Four months into the current wave of Palestinian terror, the Israel Defense Forces is changing its operational deployment in the West Bank and returning to positions it had abandoned in previous years. Over the past few weeks, the Central Command and the IDF’s construction unit have been getting various positions ready for the soldiers’ return. A permanent garrison has already returned to the Shdema outpost, near the Palestinian town of Beit Sahur in the Bethlehem region. During the second intifada, Shdema served as a lookout post, but in 2006 the IDF decided it was no longer needed and abandoned it. At that point, a dispute erupted over what would become of the compound: Beit Sahur wanted to turn it into a hospital, while the Women in Green organization sought to turn it into a new Jewish settlement. The argument became moot in 2010, when the IDF redeployed in Shdema. The position was later abandoned a second time, and about three years ago the IDF allowed settlers to renovate the abandoned base and hold events there. Now, the IDF is moving back to Shdema. Over the past few weeks, it has expanded the compound outpost and built a fence around it, and recently a company of reservists moved in — one of several companies called up at the beginning of the month to bolster the army’s forces in the West Bank.

Headline: Arab Media Report Israeli Proposed Autonomy Plan to Quiet Jerusalem Violence

Headline: Palestinian militia discussed for E. Jerusalem to help bar terror and block ISIS influence

Headline: Senior PA official: Palestinian state in West Bank just a phase

While the Palestinian Authority rails at Israel over its “settlement expanionist policies” a quiet move may be in process to grant a measure of autonomy in Jerusalem’s Arab neighborhoods. The Kuwait-based Al Jaridi newspaper quoted “private sources” on Wednesday who said Israel has proposed security forces of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) police — and prevent attacks on Israelis — from the Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem’s post-1967 areas. Among the neighborhoods to be included in the PLO security force catchment area would be the northern “hot spot” neighborhoods of Shuafat and Anata. Under the proposed agreement, the PLO police force would secure the neighborhoods without the need for prior coordination with Israel, thus granting the area a form of autonomy within the capital. According to the report, “observers” see the proposal “as an attempt by Israel to “shirk their responsibilities towards the Arab population of Jerusalem and the camps surrounding the city.” The Arabs who live in those communities there hold blue Israeli identity cards, denoting they are Israeli residents; yet when traveling abroad, temporary Jordanian passports. They could, if they chose, turn to Israel’s Interior Ministry and apply to become actual citizens of Israel since they are technically residents of Jerusalem. But for many reasons, they don’t. Meanwhile, Fatah Central Committee member Tawfik Tirawi would accept a state in ‘1967 borders’ – but with end goal of destroying Israel completely.

Headline:   Muslim body calls for de-escalation Riyadh-Tehran dispute

The head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called for the de-escalation of recent tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia, saying such a situation diverts attentions from the “real challenges” facing Muslims. Iyad Madani made the remarks on Thursday during an address to an extraordinary meeting of the world’s largest Muslim body. “It is clear that the continued deterioration of relations between some of our member states contributes to deepening rifts” among Islamic nations, in apparent reference to the row between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The head of the 57-member group that is based in the Saudi city of Jeddah further said that such tensions “distract us from addressing the real challenges,” including “terrorism,” which threaten members of the organization. Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran on January 3 following demonstrations held in front of the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in the northeastern city of Mashhad by angry protesters censuring the Al Saud family for the execution of prominent cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr in Riyadh.

Headline: Yemen oil port fire from Saudi-led air strike kills at least nine

Headline: Oman crossings to Yemen closed over attack fears

An air strike by a Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen killed at least nine people on Thursday at an oil facility on the Red Sea operated by its Houthi opponents, oil workers and medics said. A news agency run by the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, www.sabanew.net, put the death toll at 16, quoting an unnamed source. It said the cause of the fire was not known. Medical sources in the nearby port city of Hodeidah said the attack on the facility at Ras Isa, which local oil workers said was used to load tanker trucks with refined products for domestic distribution, also wounded at least 30. “The bodies were either burned or mutilated,” one source told Reuters by text message. Pictures showed fire trucks trying to put out flames rising from fuel trucks as black smoke covered the area. In eastern Yemen, four government soldiers were killed and four wounded in a bomb attack on their vehicle near al Wadia, a post on the Saudi border, a government official said. The official said al Qaeda militants were suspected of carrying out the attack.

Headline: Egyptian police killed in Sinai checkpoint attack

Five policemen have been killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the north of Egypt’s restive Sinai peninsula, the interior ministry says. Three conscripts were also also wounded when gunmen opened fire at the checkpoint in the town of El-Arish. Security forces were searching for the attackers, who managed to flee. Jihadist militants, largely based in Sinai, have killed hundreds of security personnel since the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi in 2013. The government has responded with air strikes and ground operations. The last major attack in El-Arish took place in December, when suicide bombers blew themselves up at a hotel, killing two judges monitoring the parliamentary elections.

Syria Headline:   Daraa rebels ordered to stop fighting Syria regime: report

The Amman-based Military Operations Center (MOC) that helps coordinate rebel operations in southern Syria has ordered Free Syrian Army-affiliated factions to stop attacking regime forces and instead focus their efforts against the Nusra Front, according to a Lebanese daily. The MOC’s alleged decision comes within the context of “warming ties” between Amman and Moscow following Russia’s aerial intervention on behalf of the Bashar al-Assad regime. On October 23, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced in Vienna that his country and Amman had agreed to coordinate military actions in Syria with a “special working mechanism” based in the Jordanian capital. A month later, Jordanian King Abdullah II met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russian capital during a visit in which he said that the “only way of finding a political solution in Syria is with the strong role that both [Putin] and Russia play.” Jordan was also tasked in November by Washington and Moscow with formulating a list of terrorist groups in the war-torn country that would be the target of mutually agreed upon airstrikes by the rival powers currently intervening in the conflict. An unnamed source in the FSA’s Southern Front told Alaraby Aljadeed that coordination between the two countries would not bode well for rebels in the Daraa province. (See ETRM News for Jan. 15th) http://endtimesresearchministry.com/january-15-2016-come-now-you-rich-weep/

The sources added that the FSA-linked groups were told by Jordanian, US and British intelligence officials to “stop operations against the Syrian army and avoid periphery battles,” in reference to intermittent rounds of fighting between the rebels and ISIS-affiliated groups in southern Syria. Instead, the Southern Front factions present in the Amman meeting—as well as the allied Army of Free Tribes group backed by Jordan—were instructed to concentrate on fighting both the Al-Nusra Front and Islamic Muthana Movement, which is close to the Al-Qaeda affiliate.

Kurdish Headline: Time to help them’: Israeli justice minister calls for independent Kurdish state

Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked has spoken out in favor of an independent Kurdish state. She also urged increased cooperation between Israel and the Kurdish people. Shaked sees this as an opportunity to weaken Israel’s rivals in the region. “We must openly call for the establishment of a Kurdish state that separates Iran from Turkey, one which will be friendly towards Israel,” Shaked told the annual INSS security conference in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, as cited by the Times of Israel. More precisely, Shaked proposed the new state be founded between Turkey, Israel and Iraq. The minister stressed that Israel should “promote steps that would correct the injustice that [made Kurds] the biggest nation without a state,” BasNews reported. She also emphasized that “the Kurds are an ancient people with thousands of years of history, and a democratic nation” – one that has “never attacked any other nation.” For Shaked, this isn’t just about driving a regional wedge between all the countries that could not accommodate a separate Kurdish state. “The Kurdish people are a partner for the Israeli people,” she continued, adding that Islamist extremism in the region is something both the Kurds and Israelis can work together on combatting. “We Kurds and Jews have a long history. We have common interests in trying to stop Daesh [Islamic State/IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] and the Kurds are fighting ISIS with all their might.”

Headline: Turkey accuses Moscow and Damascus of jeopardising Geneva talks

Headline: Why the world questions Turkey’s stance on Islamic State

The Turkish Prime Minister has blamed Damascus and Moscow for delaying peace talks on Syria planned for Geneva next week. Ahmet Davutoglu has backed calls to exclude militant organisations like the Kurdish YPG militia on the opposition side. The Syrian Opposition Council is refusing to attend if a third party takes part. Davotoglu told an audience in Davos that Damascus and Moscow are to blame. “We are supporting moderate opposition forces in Syria who are fighting against Daesh positions, especially in the last two weeks, close to our border. Meanwhile, Syrian regime and Russian airplanes are attacking the moderate opposition. They are putting some other elements in the opposition side, like the YPG, which has been collaborating with the regime and attacking the moderate opposition.” “Turkey will be supporting any initiative for a political solution in Syria. The only thing we want is that the moderate opposition should be represented by their own will and initiative. No terrorist groups should be represented around the table,” Davotoglu said. “If others want to be at the table, they can be on the side of the regime.”

Headline: Iran to Begin Construction on Two New Nuke Plants

The head of Iran’s atomic energy organization announced on Tuesday that the Islamic Republic, with assistance from Russia and China, will move forward on the construction of two new nuclear power plants, according to comments published in Iranian state-controlled media. Ali Akbar Salehi, who heads the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, told Iranian reporters that construction on these new nuclear plants will begin in the “near future,” according to Fars News Agency. “Construction of two 1000-MW power plants will start soon,” Salehi was quoted as saying. “We will build two other small power plants too in cooperation with China,” he added. A handful of European and Asian countries have expressed renewed interest in cooperating with Iran to help develop its nuclear industry now that the landmark nuclear agreement has been implemented, according to Salehi. “Certain European and Asian states, including China, Japan and South Korea, are ready for cooperation, and conditions have changed compared with the past,” Salehi said. Iran announced in December that it would begin construction on another new nuclear plant that is being built by Russia, which signed a contract to build two reactors in the country. Iran is permitted under the nuclear agreement, as well as by the United Nations, to continue building nuclear reactors, despite worries from some experts that the technology could be used to clandestinely continue weapons research. A State Department official confirmed to the Washington Free Beacon last year that this would not violate past agreements with Iran.

The Central Bank of Iran announced Thursday that two of the country’s state-run banks and 10 private banks have been reconnected to the SWIFT money transfer system, which links about 9,700 banks in 209 countries around the globe. The Iranian financial system had been cut off from direct international monetary transfers since the imposition of economic sanctions in 2012. The reconnection was enabled by the UN nuclear watchdog’s announcement last week that Tehran is in compliance with its nuclear agreement with Western powers.

A suicide car bomb struck a bus carrying employees of Afghanistan’s largest independent television broadcaster Wednesday evening, killing seven people and wounding 27, police officials said. The blast in western Kabul’s Darulaman Road area hit a civilian bus transporting employees of Moby Group, which includes the Tolo TV news channel, the city’s police chief, Abdul Rahman Rahimi, told reporters at the scene. The Taliban, which last year named employees of Tolo and 1TV, another major private broadcaster, as legitimate targets, claimed responsibility for the bombing. “Unfortunately, in the terrorist attack today in Darulaman Road in Kabul, we lost 7 staff members,” Tolo TV said on its Twitter account. Rahimi condemned the bombing, saying the media and freedom of the press should never come under attack. The Taliban has increased attacks on civilian targets in recent months as part of a fierce offensive that has wrested territory from the Afghan government. This week, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United States and China called on the Taliban to resume peace talks with the Kabul government, but the insurgent group has not indicated whether it will participate.

Headline:     Sudan openly mulling ties with Israel

In yet another sign of shifting ground in the region, Sudan this week openly discussed the possibility of normalizing ties with Israel. The Sudan News Agency reported that the committee for external relations of the National Dialogue Conference discussed the issue at a meeting on Monday. The report quoted one member of the committee, Ibrahim Suleiman, as saying that the majority of the committee called for the establishment of “normal and conditioned” relations with Israel. The National Dialogue Conference is a forum initiated by Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir – with the participation of a wide array of opposition elements – aimed at mapping out the future of the war-torn state. Just three years ago, Bashir – following an attack on a military factory in Khartoum that Sudan blamed on Israel – vowed that his country would never normalize relations with the “Zionist enemy.” At that time, Sudan was firmly in Iran’s camp, and was seen as a key link in smuggling arms to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza. In the interim, however, Sudan and Iran have had a falling-out.

Headline:    Islamic State attack sets storage tanks ablaze at Libyan oil terminal

Islamic State militants set fire on Thursday to oil storage tanks in a fresh assault on Ras Lanuf terminal in northern Libya and the group threatened further attacks as they exploit a prolonged power vacuum in the large north African nation. The chairman of the National Oil Corporation, Mustafa Sanalla, told reporters in Tripoli that Ras Lanuf – shut since December 2014 – would remain closed for a “long time” because of the damage inflicted on Thursday and in earlier attacks. Libya remains dogged by violence and political turmoil nearly five years after the overthrow of veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi, with two rival governments and parliaments based in Tripoli and in the east as well as various armed factions vying for power and a share of the country’s oil wealth. The Islamic State militants drove into the oil storage site early in the morning and clashed with security guards before retreating and firing from a distance to set four tanks on fire, NOC spokesman Mohamed al-Harari said. A pipeline leading from the Amal oil field to the nearby Es Sider terminal, the biggest on Libya’s Mediterranean coast, was also targeted, said Mohamed al-Manfi, an energy official allied with Libya’s eastern-based government.

Headline: Tunisia police, rioters clash in more job protests

Tunisian police fired tear gas on Tuesday to disperse hundreds of angry protesters demanding jobs in the central city of Kasserine, two days after a young unemployed man committed suicide, local residents said. Mass unrest in Tunisia five years ago was triggered by the suicide of a disaffected young man and sparked revolutions that transformed the Arab world. But while countries such as Libya and Syria have been torn apart by violence, Tunisia avoided the worst of the chaos and remains relatively stable. Despite democratisation since the toppling of autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, many Tunisians fret over high unemployment and inflation and a continued marginalisation of rural towns – factors that helped fuel the 2011 uprising. “Security forces chased the protesters in the streets of the city and fired tear gas,” Hatem Salhi, a witness, told Reuters by telephone. The Interior Ministry later announced a night time curfew in Kasserine as a preventative measure. Hundreds of unemployed protesters had gathered in front of the headquarters of the Kasserine governorate, where some threatened to commit suicide, prompting tear gas salvoes by security forces to scatter them, witnesses said.

Headline:   ISIS sets sights on overthrowing governments of Morocco and Tunisia

In the wake of growing civil unrest in Tunisia and Morocco, ISIS has launched a new media campaign directed at Muslims in the Islamic Maghreb, which focuses mainly on the ‘apostate’ governments of Tunisia and Morocco. The campaign, launched on Thursday, consists of several videos released by different ISIS provinces. The jihadists participating in the campaign call on Muslims to join ISIS strongholds in Tunisia, Libya, Mali and Algeria in order to oust the apostate democratic governments of Tunisia and Morocco and replace them with an Islamic regime based on Sharia law.
ISIS jihadists blame the Islamic Maghreb’s governments for striving to ‘westernize’ Muslims by cultivating Western lifestyle which contradicts the Islamic tradition in their state. They also vehemently attack Tunisia for its participation in the international coalition against ISIS, claiming that Tunisia takes part in the killing of Sunnis together with Russia and the US, in the guise of fighting terror.
A Tunisian jihadist speaking in the video urges Muslims to attack Tunisia, saying: “Follow in the footsteps of your brothers in Paris. Is it easier to bypass the security measures in Paris than in Tunisia? No. But we know Tunisia and we know its coward policemen. Hence, you can do twice as much as your brothers have done in France.”

Headline:   Armenia: Stepping Gingerly Around Russia-Turkey Feud

Headline:   Azerbaijan Forced to Choose Between Russia and Turkey

Policymakers in Armenia are wary of the risks of the country getting caught up in deepening Russian-Turkish rancor. But some observers see opportunity for Armenia to advance its interests amid the geopolitical falling out. Russian-Turkish relations have rapidly deteriorated since Turkish jets downed a Russian Su-24M fighter in late November. The spat has broad ramifications for Armenia: deep feelings of distrust and hostility mark Yerevan’s own relationship with Turkey, which borders Armenia to the west. Meanwhile, Armenia has traditionally seen Russia as the nation’s protector and strategic ally. Speculation about Armenia potentially becoming drawn into the Russian-Turkish feud often touches on the Russian military base at the Armenian town of Gyumri. The facility sits less than 10 kilometers from the Turkish border. While former Armenian Defense Minister Vagharshak Harutiunian (1999-2000) doubts that the existing rancor will spark armed conflict between Russia and Turkey, he predicted that “it will have a significant impact on the entire region of the South Caucasus, where Moscow’s and Ankara’s interests cross.”

Headline: Al Qaeda and ISIS: Existential Threats to the U.S. and Europe

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and the Critical Threats Project (CTP) at the American Enterprise Institute conducted an intensive multi-week exercise to frame, design, and evaluate potential courses of action that the United States could pursue to defeat the threat from the Islamic State in Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) and al Qaeda in Iraq and Syria. The planning group weighed the national security interests of the United States, its partners, its rivals, and its enemies operating in or influencing the conflicts in Iraq and Syria. It considered how current policies and interests are interacting in this complex environment. It identified the minimum endstates that would satisfy American national security requirements as well as the likely outcomes of current policies. The group also assessed the threat posed by al Qaeda and ISIS to the United States, both in the immediate and long term, and tested the probable outcomes of several potential courses of action that the United States could pursue in Iraq and Syria. This first report examines America’s global grand strategic objectives as they relate to the threat from ISIS and al Qaeda. It considers the nature of those enemy groups in depth and in their global context.

The key findings of this first report are: Salafi-jihadi military organizations, particularly ISIS and al Qaeda, are the greatest threat to the security and values of American and European citizens, Syrian al Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al Nusra poses one of the most significant long-term threats of any Salafi-jihadi group, ISIS and al Qaeda are more than terrorist groups; they are insurgencies, Current counter-ISIS and –al Qaeda policies do not ensure the safety of the American people or the homeland, & American and Western security requires the elimination of ISIS and al Qaeda regional bases and safe-havens

Headline: Competing Visions for Syria and Iraq: The Myth of an Anti-ISIS Grand Coalition

The key findings of this 2nd report are: The U.S. must accomplish four strategic objectives in Iraq and Syria to achieve vital national interests and secure its people, Any American strategy must take urgent measures to strengthen Iraqi Prime Minister Abadi and prepare contingency efforts for his fall, Ongoing international negotiations within the Vienna Framework are bypassing essential requirements for long-term success in Syria, The Salafi-jihadi militant base in Syria poses a threat to the U.S., but the U.S. must not simply attack it, & The superficial convergence of Iranian, Russian, Turkish, and Saudi strategic objectives with those of the U.S. on ISIS as a threat masks significant divergences that will undermine U.S. security requirements

Two car bombs exploded at the entrance to a beachside restaurant in the Somali capital Mogadishu in the space of an hour on Thursday, police and witnesses said, with suspected Islamist fighters holed up inside. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the police said gunmen from the militant group al Shabaab, which is aligned with al Qaeda, had stormed the restaurant and set off the first car bomb at dusk. “The second car bomb has just exploded and the fighters are still inside,” Major Farah Abdulle, a police officer at the scene, told Reuters. “We cannot know the number of casualties inside.” Al Shabaab has carried out similar attacks in the past across Mogadishu, often targeting hotels and restaurants popular with government officials and foreigners. Witnesses said the echo of the huge second explosion could be heard across the city center, and that it had been followed by sporadic gunfire.

A suicide bomber riding a motorcycle struck a crowded police checkpoint on the outskirts of the Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday, killing 11 people in an attack claimed by the Taliban. Another 21 people were wounded in the blast, which took place on a road leading to neighboring Afghanistan, police official Iqbal Khan said. Peshawar is on the edge of Pakistan’s volatile tribal regions, a stronghold of the Taliban and other Islamic militants. Khan said the dead include four police and seven civilians, including two children and a local journalist, Mahboob Shah Afridi, who was president of Tribal Union of Journalists in the neighboring Khyber region. A local Pakistani Taliban commander, Maqbool Dawar, claimed the attack, which took place as a local police chief arrived at the checkpoint. Dawar said it was in response to the killing of his comrades by security forces. Nisar Khan, who was waiting to cross the road, said the checkpoint was choked with traffic at the time of the attack. He said the huge blast left vehicles in flames and that he saw wounded people in pools of blood crying out for help.

Headline: Pro-Russia protesters storm Moldova parliament

Hundreds of protesters broke into Moldova’s parliament on Wednesday (20 January), shortly after MPs approved the nomination of a new, pro-EU prime minister. The Reuters news agency reports that members of the crowd, which had called for new elections, scuffled with police in riot gear, leading to minor injuries and arrests. The demonstration, reminiscent of the pro-Western, so-called Colour Revolutions of 10 years ago, was the latest in a series of protests which are being organised, in the main part, by pro-Russian opposition parties, such as Our Party of oligarch Renato Usatii, EU sources say. Opinion polls indicate that if elections were held, the opposition could sweep to power, putting in doubt Moldova’s EU integration. The EU foreign service, for its part, called for “calm and restraint from all sides.” “We encourage all stakeholders in the country to engage in a dialogue and to find, together, a way forward for the Republic of Moldova,” it said on Wednesday. But the protests, which have rumbled, on and off, since February last year also involve pro-transparency and anti-corruption groups.

Headline: One killed as deadly clashes erupt in Kashmir

A series of violent clashes between police and the residents of Indian-administered Kashmir have left at least a protester dead and two others wounded in the disputed Himalayan valley. On Wednesday, large crowds of angry protesters took to the streets of Naina and Batpora villages of Pulwama district, located south of the main city of Srinagar. Chanting pro-independence slogans, scores of youths hurled rocks at government forces during protests in the troubled region. The protests were called by several pro-independence groups that oppose New Delhi’s rule over the valley. Violent clashes erupted as Indian troops violently attacked pro-independence demonstrators and fired gunshots and used tear gas to disperse the angry demonstrators. Inspector-General Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gillani has confirmed that a civilian had been killed and two men injured were hospitalized following the clashes. The security clampdown comes after Kashmiri pro-independence leaders appealed for a massive march against the killing of two suspected fighters in a gunfight with security forces in the troubled region during the overnight encounter. A Kashmiri civilian succumbed to a bullet allegedly fired by troopers.

Headline: Cameron ‘not in a hurry’ for EU deal

British prime minister David Cameron said Thursday (21 January) he would not take any EU deal if there were insufficient curbs to in-work benefits for migrants and that he was not in a hurry to hold a referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU. “If there isn’t the right deal, I’m not in a hurry, I can hold my referendum at any time until the end of 2017,” he told an audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, possibly setting the stage for a delay. “It is much more important to get it right, than to rush it,” Cameron added. EU leaders are expected to have a deal on offer by their next EU summit in Brussels in mid-February. In line with that, Cameron is widely expected to try to hold a referendum early in the summer, although he has given himself by the end of 2017 to do it. In a sign that a deal is far from being done, French prime minister Manuel Valls warned also in Davos that Britain’s demands for reform could not be met at any price, even if Britain leaving the EU would be a “tragedy”.

Headline: Russian ruble falls to 80 per dollar

The value of the Russian ruble fell again Thursday, declining 5.3 percent in a day as Russia’s most valuable export, oil, fell to $30 per barrel. The ruble traded Thursday at 85.999 to the dollar, crossing the psychological threshold of 80 per dollar on Wednesday. For most of the first decade of the 21st century, the ruble held steady at between 30 and 35 to the dollar. The currency, which has lost 9 percent of its value since the start of 2016, fell as the price of oil declined to levels not seen since 2003. The country’s economy has also been hit hard by economic sanctions placed against it by the West for Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and doing business in Russia remains uncertain for many companies. Russian households are spending less to weather the decline in their purchasing power, which includes double-digit inflation. Sales of cars in Russia fell by one-third in 2015, consumers are cutting back on food purchases, and those planning vacations have reduced foreign travel and instead have been selecting domestic destinations.

Headline: Jobless claims jump to 7-month high

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits in mid-January reached seven-month highs, perhaps a sign that the rate of layoffs in the U.S. has risen slightly from record lows. Initial jobless claims climbed a seasonally adjusted 10,000 to 293,000 in the seven days stretching from Jan. 10 to Jan 16, the government said Thursday. That’s the highest level since last July. What’s more, the four-week average of initial claims rose by 6,500 to 285,000, the Labor Department said. The last time the more reliable monthly average was that high was last April. Initial claims are still at very low levels — any number below 300,000 is viewed as evidence of a strong labor market. And other gauges such as the more valuable U.S. monthly employment report show that hiring is still going strong. Still, initial claims have risen more than 14% after touching a post-recession low of 256,000 in early October.

Headline: CDC: ‘Dozen or so’ cases of Zika virus among U.S. residents

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that there are at least “a dozen or so” confirmed cases of Zika virus in residents who recently traveled to countries where the mosquito-borne virus is spreading. The agency said it was not able to provide an immediate breakdown by state because states must authorize the release of that information. Several state health departments have reported confirmed cases in recent days. These include: Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey and Texas. The number of cases is from 2015 to date, CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said. Health officials said there is no risk to the public because all the cases so far have been in returning travelers who were likely infected by mosquitos abroad rather than by mosquitos in the U.S. mainland.

Headline: H1N1 swine flu kills 18 in Armenia, three in Georgia: officials

Eighteen people have died from H1N1 swine flu in Armenia in the last two months, the country’s health ministry said on Thursday, but it said there was no risk of a mass outbreak. It said on Jan. 13 that 10 people had died of swine flu in the same period, but on Thursday said the toll had now risen to 18. The ministry said the deaths did not amount to an epidemic. Separately, neighboring Georgia said on Thursday that swine flu had killed three people so far this year. “In January 2016, three death cases caused by the H1N1 virus were confirmed by laboratory tests,” Amiran Gamkrelidze, head of the country’s National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health, said. He told reporters all three victims had been male citizens from western Georgia. Doctors in both countries said the patients who died had complications and had sought medical assistance far too late.

Headline: Caltech Researchers Find Evidence of a Real Ninth Planet

Caltech researchers have found evidence of a giant planet tracing a bizarre, highly elongated orbit in the outer solar system. The object, which the researchers have nicknamed Planet Nine, has a mass about 10 times that of Earth and orbits about 20 times farther from the sun on average than does Neptune (which orbits the sun at an average distance of 2.8 billion miles). In fact, it would take this new planet between 10,000 and 20,000 years to make just one full orbit around the sun. The researchers, Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown, discovered the planet’s existence through mathematical modeling and computer simulations but have not yet observed the object directly. “This would be a real ninth planet,” says Brown, the Richard and Barbara Rosenberg Professor of Planetary Astronomy. “There have only been two true planets discovered since ancient times, and this would be a third. It’s a pretty substantial chunk of our solar system that’s still out there to be found, which is pretty exciting.”

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz1Watchtower uses work from spirit medium to show Jesus is only a god. In this photo you can see that the Watchtower had Johannes Greber mailing address.  Yet when a member of the JW’s wanted to read this book and ask the leaders for the mailing address they told the person they don’t know. See 1981 letter below.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz The Watchtower said they only address they had was on the book but as you can see for the above letter in 1980 the Watchtower leaders did in fact have that address!  They just didn’t want any of their followers to know they quote from a Spirit medium which the Bible warns us to stay away from!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA If you are reading this on John 1:1 without viewing my video today at the top of  my post you may miss why this photo is important.  Dana and Mantey’s Greek work quoted by the Watchtower was and still is misleading to the reader. You will see just how misleading by watching my video!
A created being 2 A created being 3
Below you will see for yourself how the Watchtower tries to teach their follower that Jesus was a created being and they used another Greek expert to try and make their point. However, when you go to the original by the Greek author you will see the Watchtower did not state all the fact and in fact left out on purpose the fact that the Greek author’s work show that Jesus was not a created being but creative as would God be!
A created being
A created being 2 The very next sentence the Watchtower left out of the quote shows Jesus was not created!
A created being 3 On page 370 the Greek author Alfred goes on to show Jesus was not created but creative. Once again the Watchtower Society is caught in distortions and lies.
Below is another example of how the Watchtower misleads their people. The Greek text on the left is the good translation which show Jesus make all things.  However,  because the Greek text shows Jesus to be the creator God the leaders in the Watchtower had to change the text to make it fit what they teach so they just added the word other.  Watch the video at the top of this post so you clearly understand the importance of this change in the text!

Headline: West Bank tensions rise after Palestinian stabbings in Israeli settlements

Israeli troops shot and wounded a Palestinian teenager who stabbed a pregnant Israeli woman in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Monday, amid signs of Palestinians stepping up attacks on Israelis inside Jewish settlements. The military ordered Palestinian laborers to leave their workplaces in some settlements as the violence spread from streets and bus stops in the West Bank and Israel to within the usually well-protected Israeli enclaves. Hospital officials said the woman stabbed in Tekoa, a settlement near Bethlehem, was in moderate condition at a Jerusalem hospital, with the fetus unharmed. The stabber, 17, was in serious condition after being shot in the leg. He was being treated at another Jerusalem hospital. The stabbing was the second at a Jewish settlement in as many days. On Sunday, an assailant stabbed to death a mother of six at her home in the southern West Bank. The attacker is still being sought. The wave of Palestinian violence, now in its fourth month, has been fueled by various factors including frustration over the 2014 collapse of peace talks and the growth of Jewish settlements on land Palestinians seek for a future state. Also stoking the strife has been Muslim opposition to increased Jewish visits to Jerusalem’s al Aqsa mosque complex, which is one of the holiest sites in Islam and is revered in Judaism as the location of two ancient biblical temples. The Israeli military ordered all Palestinian laborers who work in the large Gush Etzion bloc of settlements in the southern West Bank to quit their places of employment after the Tekoa attack. Some were seen being driven away in the back of a large dump truck. “In light of situation assessments and following recent terror attacks … Palestinian workers have been instructed to leave (Gush Etzion) communities,” an army statement said.

Headline: Podcast: Why Israel’s new gas prospect is a bombshell

Prospective natural gas resources located in the eastern Mediterranean Daniel license zones may come close to the quantities found in Israel’s Tamar reservoir, a Tel Aviv Stock Exchange report revealed Sunday. Best estimates for resources in the “Og Prospect,” located within the Daniel East license, as well as those for the entire Daniel West zone, amount to 1.1 trillion cubic feet (33 billion cubic meters) and 7.9 tcf (221 BCM), respectively – or about 254 BCM in total – according to the report filed by the Isramco Negev 2-LP exploration firm. In comparison, the Tamar reservoir, which has been providing gas to Israel since March 2013, contains about 282 BCM of gas. For both Daniel East and Daniel West, estimates for the “unrisked gross prospective resources” were sent on Friday to the license partners by the Texas-based firm Netherland, Sewell and Associates, Inc. In the Og prospect, located within Daniel East, Netherland, Sewell and Associates said the best estimate of gas contents was 300.7 bcf (8 BCM) in Og’s upper sand, and 884 bcf (25 BCM) in its lower sand. In total, the best estimate for the license was therefore about 1.1 trillion cubic feet (33 BCM).

Headline: Syrian refugee crisis builds at Jordan’s borders

Jordan’s newest camps for Syrian refugees are being built not amongst the deserts and urban sprawl of northern Jordan, but on the far-flung badlands of the eastern desert, on the southern fringe of Syria itself. Here, in a demilitarised zone between the two countries, a rapidly growing outflow of Syrian refugees is hitting the limits of Jordanian hospitality. This week, Jordanian authorities and the NGOs that offer basic services estimate there are between 16,000 and 17,000 people marooned on the frontier. Of all Syria’s neighbours, Jordan has maintained the most controlled border policy throughout the nearly five-year conflict, and it is arguably the most stable. The terrorist attacks of Beirut, Baghdad, Erbil, Ankara and Istanbul are yet to rattle Amman, and Jordanian authorities are determined to keep it this way, which means prioritising security – a far-reaching directive that includes complex screening for refugees wishing to enter Jordan, and a vastly reduced intake. Officials have, for the past two-plus years, maintained strict control over the flow of refugees into the kingdom, which officials say already shelters 1.4 million Syrian refugees – about 20 percent of the population. From a high of several thousand refugees per day in 2012, Jordan now admits an average of 50-100 people a day, and on some days, none at all. But as Syria’s war grows more vicious and protracted, the refugees keep coming, streaming south through the demilitarised zone between the two countries until they press up against the man-made earthen strip that marks the northernmost edge of the reach of the Jordanian military. And here, in their thousands, they wait.

Headline: Airstrike hits police facility in Yemen, killing 26

An airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition targeted a building used by police in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, killing at least 26 people and wounding about 15, Security officials said on Monday. The officials, who are loyal to anti-government Shiite rebels known as the Houthis, said some 30 more people are believed to be still trapped under the debris of the badly damaged building in central Sanaa. Security forces swiftly sealed off the area as earth-moving equipment arrived to help with the search for bodies and survivors under the debris. The officials initially announced that 20 people were killed, but later said that six bodies were unearthed from under the debris. Police vehicles parked in the facility’s courtyard were destroyed and nearby homes suffered some damage, they said. The dead and wounded were policemen and Houthi rebels, they said. The Targeted building was partially used as a gathering point for security forces and on occasion used by the Houthis as an assembly point for forces headed to deployment elsewhere in Yemen. The airstrike happened shortly before midnight on Sunday, according to the officials, who had no further details. Reporters were barred from approaching the facility, they said, speaking Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Syria Headline:  Russian robots on the ground for four-army assault to retake Aleppo

Fierce fighting raged Saturday between regime forces backed by Russian airstrikes and Daesh in northern Aleppo province a monitor said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 16 Daesh fighters had been killed in a failed attack on a regime position near the town of Al-Bab in the northeast of the province. State television also reported that regime forces had repelled an assault.
Heavy fighting was ongoing on Saturday the monitor said with Russian warplanes carrying out strikes in the region between the regime-held Kweyris air base and Al-Bab. The regime has advanced toward the town a Daesh bastion in recent days and is now within 10 km of it according to the Observatory. That is the closest regime forces have come to the town since 2012. The Britain-based monitor also said regime forces had taken a string of villages nearby. Roughly 30 km south of the Turkish border Al-Bab fell into rebel hands in July 2012 and Daesh terrorists captured it in late 2013.
The various battles are intended in part to cut rebel supply lines into Aleppo city the provincial capital and Syria’s second city. The city itself is divided and regime forces are now hoping to effectively encircle the opposition-held east. ‘Through its operations the army is trying to broaden its security zone around the city’ and prevent rebels inside from receiving supplies and reinforcements from the suburbs a security source told AFP this week. In addition to cutting rebel access to eastern Aleppo city the regime is hoping to sever areas controlled by Daesh in the province from its territory in neighboring Raqqa Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said. ‘If regime forces are able to reach the road that leads from Al-Bab to Aleppo they will be able to tighten the noose around the fighters and the civilians that transport oil from areas under Daesh control.’

Syria Headline:  ISIS captures new areas from troops in eastern Syria

The Islamic State (ISIS) attacked strategic points in the Syrian city of Deir al-Zour Saturday, reportedly killing and kidnapping hundreds of residents said to be supportive of the government. As news of the attacks came to light, numbers of casualties reported ranged from 135 to over 300, with as many as 400 others allegedly kidnapped. Early reports from state-run SANA news agency claimed 300 residents had been massacred, most of whom were elderly folk, women and children, according to The Independent. The UK-based paper reported that the British Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the number at 135, while media activist Ahmed Helwani told ARA News 130 civilians and 40 soldiers had been killed. “The militants broke into the regime-held neighborhoods of Ayash and Begayliya, and attacked people in their homes,” Helwani said. “Their main target was the pro-regime soldiers and their families.” The Observatory also accused ISIS of abducting 400 family members of supporters of Bashar Assad’s regime, but another activist told BBC regional analyst Sebastian Usher that 20 individuals were arrested. The activist did confirm that militants entered the neighborhoods with lists of pro-government fighters. One civil rights activist, who spoke to ARA News on condition of anonymity, explained, “ISIS is punishing families of pro-regime soldiers after the group lost the battle for Deir ez-Zor’s military airport.” According to the BBC, since Saturday’s attacks, Syria has reportedly launched a counter-offensive, supported by Russian airstrikes.

Iraq Headline:    Iraqi forces search for Americans kidnapped in Baghdad

A major search is under way in the south of Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, after the kidnapping of several Americans. Unconfirmed reports say three Americans were abducted on Friday evening along with their Iraqi interpreter, whose home they were visiting at the time. They have not yet been identified, nor is it clear who is holding them. The three were said to have been seized by gunmen who were wearing uniforms, leading officials to believe that Shia Muslim militiamen were responsible. It was the first abduction of Westerners in Iraq for several years. On Monday, residents of the southern suburb of Dora said security forces had been conducting house-to-house searches, with the area sealed off and helicopters hovering overhead. It is there that the three Americans are reported to have been abducted by armed men in military uniforms, after visiting the interpreter’s house. Security sources said the Americans had made previous visits to the area, even though it is regarded as something of a trouble spot, reports the BBC’s Jim Muir in Baghdad.

A Turkish police officer and a soldier were killed by sniper fire and two Kurdish militants were shot dead in separate incidents in the mainly Kurdish southeast’s biggest city, security sources said on Sunday. Two police officers were also wounded by shrapnel from a homemade explosive during operations in the district of Sur in Diyarbakir. The soldier was shot and killed on Sunday, while the police officer was hit on Saturday before succumbing to his wounds a day later, they said. Sur has been under a round-the-clock curfew since Dec. 2 as security forces try to eject militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) from urban centers. The cities of Silopi and Cizre, further east near the Syrian and Iraqi borders, have also been under curfew since mid-December. The military General Staff said 135 PKK militants in Silopi, 308 in Cizre and 101 in Sur have been killed since Dec. 15. according to media reports.

Headline: Turkey-backed rebels warn civilians to flee ISIS-held border strip

Projectiles fired from Syria struck near a school Monday in the southern Turkish city of Kilis, killing one person, according to local authorities. The office of the governor of Kilis said a rocket had hit a schoolyard, killing a cleaning lady, while two other rockets fell in vacant land. A wounded student, a girl in the seventh grade, was taken to a hospital for treatment, the governor’s office said. The mayor of Kilis, Hasan Kara, told Turkish NTV television it seemed “mortars” had been fired from Syria. The broadcaster, quoting military sources, said the Turkish army responded with fire against targets in Syria. Earlier, the state-run Anadolu Agency said four people were injured in an explosion on the grounds of a middle school in Kilis. There are four schools in the area, just 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Syria. Meanwhile, Turkish-backed rebel group has issued a dramatic warning for civilians to leave the ISIS-held border strip with Turkey, raising the possibility of major military action in the region Ankara wants to turn into a “safe zone.” The Free Syrian Army-affiliated Sultan Murad Division on Monday morning announced that the villages between northern Aleppo’s Aazaz and Jarablus were now “military zones,” shortly after ISIS rocket fire killed at least one person at a school in the Turkish border town of Kilis. “We advise civilians to leave these areas in the interests of their safety,” the Sultan Murad Division—which is composed of ethnic Turkmen and receives logistical backing from Ankara—added in its terse statement. “We are not responsible for them after the issuing of this statement.”

Headline: After Iran Nuclear Sanctions Lifted, US Issues Fresh Embargo Over Ballistic Missile Program

Headline: Iran says new U.S. sanctions illegitimate

The United States announced fresh sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program Sunday, a U.S. official said, Agence France-Presse reported. Announcement of the sanctions came a day after several Western powers including the U.S. lifted sanctions on Iran as part of the nuclear deal signed in July. The U.S. Department of Treasury released a statement describing the 11 individuals and entities who were sanctioned Sunday over involvement in Iranian ballistic missile testing. The list included people and companies that were based out of China and the United Arab Emirates that had been serving as a front for Iranian military trafficking. “This network obfuscated the end user of sensitive goods for missile proliferation by using front companies in third countries to deceive foreign suppliers,” read a release from the Department of Treasury describing the group of companies and people who have looked to help Iran secure materials for a ballistic missile.

Headline:   Suicide bomber kills 13 in attack on prominent Afghan family

Headline: Rocket lands near Italian embassy in Afghan capital Kabul

A suicide bomber targeting a gathering in a volatile eastern province of Afghanistan killed 13 people, including seven members of a prominent pro-government clan, Afghan officials said. Another 14 people were wounded in the attack on the home of Obaidullah Shinwari, a scion of the clan and member of the Nangarhar provincial council who was not harmed in the attack, the officials said. The attack came a day before a second round of international talks aimed at reviving the peace process between the Afghan government and the Taliban. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. A Taliban spokesman tweeted that his group was not involved. The head of the council, Ahmad Ali Hazrat, told The Associated Press that the bomber mingled with a crowd at the family event in the provincial capital of Jalalabad before setting off his payload. Malik Osman, the head of the family and a respected community elder in the Shinwar district near the Pakistan border was wounded and flown to Kabul for treatment, Hazrat said. The family has strongly supported President Ashraf Ghani’s efforts to bring peace to the country after almost 40 years of war and 15 years of Taliban insurgency. The family and guests had gathered to mark the release of another of Osman’s sons, Samiullah, eight months after he was kidnapped and held by the Taliban. Samiullah was wounded in the attack, but not seriously, according to Zabiullah Zamaray, another provincial council member. The day before the attack, hundreds of residents of Achin district — where Shinwari’s nephew Nasim is governor — held a demonstration calling on authorities to rid the region of insurgents, including a newly formed Islamic State affiliate that recently seized parts of the province after a summer of fierce fighting with the Taliban.

The U.N.-AU peacekeeping mission in Sudan’s Darfur said Sunday it is “deeply concerned” about a surge in fighting between government forces and rebels in the conflict-hit western region. The UNAMID mission said it was “deeply concerned about ongoing fighting between government forces and armed movements in the Jebel Marra area, central Darfur,” near one of its bases in the town of Nertiti. “UNAMID personnel in Nertiti also reported five bombs being dropped on an area northeast of their location. The impact of the bombs was felt at the team site,” it said in a statement. Businesses in the town of Nertiti have shut down for fear of attacks, the mission said. It gave no further details of the fighting and the Sudanese military did not immediately comment.

Advances by Islamist militants in Libya pose a new threat to Europe and could unleash a new wave of refugees, Germany’s defence minister said on Monday, adding she did not rule out deploying German troops in the north African country. “Germany will not be able to evade responsibility for contributing its share,” Ursula von der Leyen told Bild newspaper when asked about whether she plans to deploy troops in Libya, which has been racked by conflict since the 2011 fall of Muammar Qaddafi. She didn’t give further details on the nature of involvement but said that implementing law and order was the most important goal in Libya, which has seen advances by the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Germany, which took in 1.1 million refugees last year, is keen to promote stability in Europe’s neighbors in order to reduce the number of people streaming across the Mediterranean.

rise of ISIS

Headline: ISIS’s Regional Campaign- Jan 11, 2016

ISIS’s affiliates in Libya and Pakistan gained new supporters and expanded attack zones in December 2015. ISIS’s largely dormant affiliates in Algeria and Russia’s North Caucasus region also conducted rare attacks, potentially signaling a renewal of ISIS activity in those areas. Each of these affiliate campaigns give ISIS resiliency outside of Iraq and Syria. Meanwhile ISIS is withstanding competition for recruits with its rival al Qaeda in countries like Somalia and Yemen by expanding into areas outside of AQ’s priority operating zones, thereby increasing global radicalization overall. ISIS will continue to expand regionally and inspire international plots such as the San Bernardino attack as long as it maintains its caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

Headline: 4 dead in suicide attack at Cameroon mosque: security source

Four worshipers were killed in a suicide bombing at a mosque in northern Cameroon Monday, a security source said, five days after a similar attack left 12 people dead. Monday’s blast hit the village of Nguetchewe in Cameroon’s Far North region, in an area near the border with Nigeria regularly targeted by Boko Haram militants. “The toll of this attack is four dead and two injured,” the source, who was at the scene of the attack, told AFP. A source close to regional authorities confirmed that a deadly attack had taken place in Nguetchewe, but was unable to provide details. The security source said the attack took place around 6:00 a.m. just as morning prayers were ending. “The suicide bomber, a young boy, arrived in the village by foot,” the source said, adding that a witness had noticed his behavior seemed suspicious and had tried to intercept him. “The bomber ran towards the mosque, where he set off the explosives he was carrying with him.” Cameroonian troops are at the scene of the attack, the source said. It is the second deadly blast to hit the Far North in less than a week, following a bombing at a mosque in Kolofata district during morning prayers last Wednesday.

Headline: Burkina Faso Capital Security Tightens After Jihadi Attack

In the wake of a weekend attack that killed up to 32 people, security was beefed up across Burkina Faso’s capital Monday as businesses and banks reopened. The West African nation also announced a joint effort with neighboring Mali in the fight against Islamic extremists in the West African region. The attack was the first of its kind in Burkina Faso, a largely Muslim country that had managed to avoid the kinds of jihadist attacks that have hit neighboring Mali since 2012. At the site Monday, forensic experts and investigators from France and Burkina Faso, dressed in white, filled the brown dusty street, gathering evidence in secured areas near the hotel and the Cappuccino Cafe. Military forces ended the siege Saturday. Officials said forces killed three attackers in the Splendid Hotel and another in a neighboring hotel. Military spokesman Capt. Guy Herve Ye on Monday said, however, that they have clearly identified three attackers and are investigating what they thought was a fourth. He said that many witnesses said that there were women among the attackers, though he says that is probably because the attackers had long dreadlocks. Burkina Faso’s security minister, Simon Compaore, on Sunday said 32 people were dead, including three jihadists. The toll had earlier been 28 killed in addition to four jihadists.

Headline: Bomb kills 5 paramilitary soldiers in southwestern Pakistan

A bomb blast targeted Pakistani paramilitary troops on Monday, killing five soldiers and wounding three in the southwestern city of Quetta, officials said. The bombing occurred on the city’s outskirts, said a local police official, Bangul Khan, adding that early indications were that the blast came from a bomb planted near the patrol and detonated by remote control. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Quetta is the capital of southwestern Baluchistan province, where a low-level insurgency has long been waged by Baloch separatist groups demanding a greater share of the region’s natural resources or outright independence. Al-Qaida, the Taliban and other Sunni militant groups are also active in the region. Last week, a suicide bombing struck a polio vaccination center in the city and killed 15 people, mainly policemen gathered to escort health workers. It was the latest attack on the vaccination campaign and health workers who have been repeatedly targeted in recent years by Islamic militants.

Headline: IMF Says Saudi Arabia Could Be Bankrupt By 2020

Headline: Iran sanctions: Middle East stock crash wipes £27bn off markets as Tehran enters oil war

Shares in Saudi Arabia fell more than 6 percent Sunday morning as investors reacted to the lifting of sanctions against Iran, fearing that the move may worsen the global oil glut as Iran looks to ramp up its crude oil exports (see below). Global oil prices dropped below the $30 mark, settling at $29 per barrel Friday. Egypt’s market also hit its lowest point in two years. On Saudi Arabia’s headline index, the Tadawul All Share Index, 167 stocks fell, while no stock showed a gain. Dubai’s DFM General Index also lost 5.2 percent by afternoon, its biggest loss in five months. Economists attributed the slump in the market to Iran’s move to boost oil exports after the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog said Saturday that the country has complied with the terms of an international agreement to curb its nuclear program. The additional expected stock could put further downward pressure on crude oil prices. “Iranian oil supply will come to the market as early as today or tomorrow,” Nayal Khan, the Riyadh-based head of institutional equities sales trading at Saudi Fransi Capital, told Bloomberg. “The market’s recovery will depend on whether we can get oil back above $30. Saudi Arabia, the largest exporter of crude oil in the world, responded to the falling crude prices by introducing new austerity measures to stabilize government finances last year. However, with prices at a 12-year low, oil dependent economies of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates could see more spending cuts in 2016. Qatar’s QE Index fell 7 percent, while Abu Dhabi’s ADX General Index slumped 4.2 percent to the lowest level since November 2013. Oman’s MSM 30 Index dropped 3.2 percent, the most since December 2014. Kuwaiti stocks also lost 3.2 percent, plunging to the lowest level since May 2004, and Bahraini equities fell 0.4 percent, Bloomberg reported.

Headline: Italian Banks Collapse, Short Sales Banned As Loan Loss Fears Mount

The crash in oil prices has crippled their economic growth, and led to the decline of the Canadian dollar, as well as a predictable increase in the cost of imports like food. For those of us living in the US, this provides a really good example of what life may be like should the dollar take a plunge in the near future. Here’s what our northern neighbors have been dealing with: It is often said that a free-floating currency acts as a shock absorber. But when Canadians go shopping for groceries these days, they’re getting nothing but the shock—sticker shock, that is. On Tuesday, the Canadian dollar, commonly known as the loonie, broke below 70 U.S. cents for the first time since May 1, 2003. For America’s northern neighbor, which imports about 80 percent of the fresh fruits and vegetables its citizens consume, this entails a sharp rise in prices for these goods. With lower-income households tending to spend a larger portion of income on food, this side effect of a soft currency brings them the most acute stress. Canadians took to twitter this week to share their collective horror over the rising cost of food. Cucumbers are $3 each. A head of cauliflower is $8. A large container of pepper cost $19 and some Canadians are paying $16 for a single bell pepper. A container of laundry detergent is $32.

Headline: Drought Dries South African Maize Silos

South Africa is quickly running out of maize as the El Nino drought deepens. Like many other countries in southern Africa, South Africa is experiencing its worst drought in decades. As the current crop withers due to extreme heat and little rainfall, food prices are rising and may be out of reach for millions. The country’s water reservoirs are running low and it is left with a four-month stock of its staple food, maize. South Africa’s minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana, said the situation is critical and requires urgent importation of maize. “By the end of May we may be short of white and yellow maize. We have to make sure therefore that by that time we have enough maize in stock,” he said. Experts warn that over a billion dollars will be required to avert catastrophic hunger for both humans and animals. The World Food Program said Monday that an estimated 14 million people are facing hunger in southern Africa, while programs intended to assist people face critical funding challenges. Botswana said it is experiencing its worst drought in five years, with both water and food stocks quickly running out.

Headline: 2 dead, several injured as storms rip through Florida

Florida officials say two adults have been killed and four children have been seriously injured after two suspected tornadoes swept through central Florida early Sunday. The dead and injured were all members of the same family and living in a mobile home in Duette, Fla., near Tampa. The grandparents were killed, and the children were taken to the hospital. Their father was injured as well. At least three tornadoes have been reported in the area, where severe weather warnings were issued Sunday as storms continued to battle central Florida, according to The Weather Channel. The severe weather was brought from the Gulf of Mexico after a cold front pushed in and mixed with warm air. According to the National Weather Service, the storm damaged several homes in Duette, Fla., where winds hit 70 mph. Florida Power and Light reported there were 17,000 homes without power in Sarasota County. Sarasota County officials reported damage to multiple homes near Siesta Key. At least one home was destroyed and a woman had to be pulled from the wreckage by first responders. Other damage reports include roofs being blown off homes.

Pastor Saeed – a U.S. citizen who has been imprisoned in Iran for more than three years – was freed today along with other Americans according to government sources.

“We’re delighted this day has finally arrived,” said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ. “Pastor Saeed should never been imprisoned in the first place. He spent more than three years in an Iranian prison. We’re grateful for the millions of people who have stood with us in our ongoing efforts – both in this country and abroad – to secure his release. We have worked and prayed that this day would finally arrive. And now, Pastor Saeed can return home.”

The ACLJ represents the Abedini family.

“This has been an answer to prayer,” said Naghmeh after learning about Saeed’s release. “This is a critical time for me and my family. We look forward to Saeed’s return and want to thank the millions of people who have stood with us in prayer during this most difficult time.”

Headline: Two Palestinians killed in clashes on Gaza border

Two Palestinian Arabs were shot dead by Israeli forces during protests along the border with Gaza on Friday, AFP reported, citing the Gazan health ministry. The two were identified as Mohammed Abu Zaida, 18, who was reportedly shot in the  neck and Mohammad Qita, 26, who was reportedly hit in the stomach. 15 other Palestinians were wounded by Israeli fire during the clashes in central Gaza, the health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP. The IDF confirmed it had fired on protesters after they breached the “buffer zone” along the border. “Dozens of rioters have breached the buffer zone and are attempting to damage the fence,” a spokeswoman said. “Forces shot rioters posing a threat of infiltration and the riot is ongoing.” The incident is not the first of its kind, as Gazans have constantly been provoking IDF soldiers stationed near the border fence. These provocations usually take place on Fridays, when Arabs riot near the border fence and attack security forces with rocks. The soldiers ask the rioters to move back but they ignore the calls and continue to approach the fence, forcing troops to open fire. Fridays are known as a day of protest in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. These are mainly provoked by Hamas and other terrorist groups which encourage Palestinian Arabs to hold “days of rage” on Fridays.

Headline: Putin bypasses Israel, sets up joint war room for S. Syria with Jordan

In a pivotal step reflecting the changeability of military and political deals in Israel’s neighborhood, Jordan has almost overnight agreed to establish a shared war room with Russia for the concerted conduct of their operations in Syria. This represents an extreme reversal of Amman’s policy. Until now, Jordan fought against Russia’s protégée Bashar Assad from a joint war room north of Amman called the US Central Command Forward-Jordan, as part of a lineup with the US, Saudi Arabia and Israel. But this week Jordan shifted onto a new plane. debkafile’s military and intelligence sources say Jordanian King Abdullah’s decision to team up with Moscow starts a whole new ball game rolling on policy-making and intelligence-sharing. He doesn’t plan to shut down his shared command center with the US and Israel, but the center of gravity of Jordan’s military and intelligence efforts will be redirected to the new center with Russia, representing a major earthquake in those areas. Amman is working hard to downplay the new partnership, presenting it as designed to foster better coordination between the American and Russian military efforts in Syria and the war on the Islamic State. Ever since his major intervention in Syria, Putin has tried to persuade Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to pull the rug from under the Israeli-backed rebels in the South. They are deemed as a necessary buffer for securing Israel’s northern border and blocking the reimposition of Assad’s authority there.. The content of the exchanges between Putin and Netanyahu has only been shared with tight circles of confidants in Jerusalem and the Kremlin, so little is reliably known about their areas of agreement and dispute. There is no doubt that the prime minister spoke firmly about Israel’s abiding concern that, once Assad regained control of the South, he would open the door up to the Israeli border and let in his allies and Israel’s arch enemies, Hizballah and the mostly-Iraqi Shiite militias fighting under the command of officers from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. By teaming up with Jordan for a joint war room to cover operations in southern Syria, Putin has gone around Netanyahu’s back and acquired a helper for evicting Syrian rebels from southern Syria.

Headline: Blast sparks fire at major oil pipeline in Yemen

A Yemeni government spokesman said a blast hit pipelines connecting oil storage tanks with the refinery in the city of Aden on Friday, causing a huge fire. Naser Shayef, spokesman for the country’s refineries administration, told The Associated Press that the explosion took place at 1:00 a.m. and sent thick smoke billowing over the city. Firefighters put the blaze out two hours later and only two oil pipelines were sabotaged, he said. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. This is the first time pipelines have come under attack since July, when southern fighters backed by a Saudi-led coalition secured Aden and repelled Shiite rebels and forces loyal to an ousted president. Since then, the city has witnessed a series of militant attacks, most of which were claimed by the local Islamic State affiliate.

Syria Headline:      Syrian forces prepare for assault to seize Aleppo

Pro-government fighters are preparing to launch a major assault to recapture Syria’s second city Aleppo, a security source in the northern province told AFP. “Through its operations, the army is trying to broaden its security zone around the city,” and prevent the rebels from receiving supplies and reinforcements from the suburbs, the source said. Once Syria’s commercial hub, Aleppo city is now divided between government control in the west and rebel control in the east. The broader province is split as well, with ISIS largely in the east, and rebel groups and Syria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate, the Nusra Front, in the west. But with backing from Russian airstrikes and foreign fighters, Syria’s armed forces are slowly advancing south and southeast of the city. “This will be the biggest military operation in Syria since the beginning of the war,” one commander with pro-government forces told AFP. He said loyalist forces were fighting on seven fronts around the city of Aleppo in a bid to cut off rebel supplies and isolate the city’s east.

A car bomb blast has hit a police headquarters in south-eastern Turkey, killing six people and wounding at least 39, officials say. Five civilians including a baby were among the dead. Rescuers searched the rubble for survivors at the scene in Cinar district, Diyarbakir province. Officials blamed the blast on Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) militants, who are active in the mainly Kurdish province. No group has so far said it carried out the attack. The bomb was detonated at the entrance of the Cinar district police complex, officials say. The attackers then reportedly fired rockets at the headquarters. The blast damaged nearby residential buildings, where a mother and her five-month-old baby were killed. A girl aged one and a five-year-old boy also died when a house collapsed. Another police station, in Midyat town, in neighbouring Mardin province, was also attacked by militants, according to Turkish media, but there are no reports of casualties.

A key Islamic State (IS) local leader along with 10 more fighters of the extremist group have been killed during drone strike in eastern Afghanistan, a local TV reported on Friday. Citing local officials, the Tolo TV channel reported that IS leader Hafiz Saeed was killed with 10 other fighters in the air strike which was carried out in Zhwara area of the mountainous Achin district in Nangarhar province. However, it didn’t mention the exact date of the air strike. It has mentioned that Saeed had served as a commander of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) before pledging allegiance to IS last year. Officials have yet to make comment on the report. Militants loyal to IS claimed responsibility for attack on Pakistani Consulate in Nangarhar’s provincial capital Jalalabad on Wednesday, which left 10 dead, including three attackers, and injured nearly a dozen others.

Headline: Al-Qaeda branch threatens to ‘recover’ Spanish exclaves in Africa

One of the leaders of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has called for the “recapture” of the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla, located on the border with Morocco. In a 20-minute long video, Abu Obeida Yusuf Annabi, an Algerian national, called for the taking of both cities, Europa Press news agency reported. He has also reportedly addressed Libyans, calling on them to “reject the establishment of pseudo-democracy and not to connect terrorism to the activity of Islamic groups.” Francisco Martinez, Spain’s security minister, said the video was “known, analyzed and investigated,” speaking to reporters Friday. Martinez also said that Spain would not raise its level of alert from 4 to the maximum of 5 because of this latest Al-Qaeda scare. However, meetings of the terrorist threat evaluation committee will take place “at least once a week.” Spain has maintained a Level 4 alert since June, after terrorist attacks struck Kuwait, France and Tunisia. On January 7, AQIM released another video announcing its plans to attack Naples, Rome and Madrid. AQIM operates in Algeria and in the Sahel region, which includes areas in Chad, Mali and Mauritania. It also has cells in Libya, Nigeria and Tunisia.

Headline: Al-Shabab seizes African Union base in Somalia

Al-Shabab militants have overrun an African Union military base outside the southern Somali town of el-Ade. The Islamist group says it has taken “complete control” of the AU camp and killed more than 60 Kenyan soldiers. Residents told the BBC that al-Shabab had raised its flag at a camp for Kenyan troops and said insurgents had paraded bodies through the town. But Kenya’s army spokesman said it was a nearby Somali base that was stormed and Kenyan troops counter-attacked. The number of casualties on both sides was not known, Kenyan military spokesman Col David Obonyo said in a statement. An al-Shabab official told the BBC that its fighters had attacked the base after morning prayers, starting with a car bomb before storming the facility. “We took control of the base after one hour of fierce fighting,” he said. “We counted 63 Kenyan bodies inside the base. The other Kenyan troops have run away into the bush and we are hunting them down.” He said the militants were confiscating 28 of 31 military vehicles inside the camp and all arms and ammunition. The two military bases – one for Somali troops and the other for AU soldiers – neighbour each other on the outskirts of el-Ade, which is in Gedo region, about 380km (240 miles) west of Mogadishu.

On Friday, Al-Khalifah regime’s forces reportedly fired toxic gases and birdshots at protesters in Sitra Island where Bahrainis staged demonstrations against the Saudi execution of Sheikh Nimr. Similar protests were also held in the coastal village of Malkiyah. Saudi Arabia said on January 2 that it had executed Sheikh Nimr, an outspoken critic of the Riyadh regime, along with 46 others. The execution caused international outrage. Meanwhile, crowds of Bahrainis staged anti-regime protests in the villages of al-Diraz and al-Daih after Friday prayers to express their solidarity with political detainees. Bahrainis also held demonstrations on Wednesday on the eve of a fresh session of the trial of cleric Sheikh Ali Salman in the Court of Appeals. Headline: Islamic State claims bomb and gun attacks in Indonesian capital

Islamic State said it was behind an attack by suicide bombers and gunmen in the heart of Jakarta on Thursday that brought the radical group’s violence to the world’s most populous Muslim country for the first time. Just seven people were killed despite multiple blasts and a gunfight, and five of them were the attackers themselves, but the brazenness of their siege suggested a new brand of militancy in a country where low-level strikes on police are common. It took security forces about three hours to end the attack near a Starbucks cafe and Sarinah’s, Jakarta’s oldest department store, after a team of seven militants traded gunfire with police and blew themselves up. An Indonesian and a Canadian were killed in the attack. Twenty people, including an Algerian, Austrian, German and Dutchman, were wounded. “A group of soldiers of the caliphate in Indonesia targeted a gathering from the crusader alliance that fights the Islamic State in Jakarta,” the group said in a statement. It added that 15 people were killed. Jakarta’s police chief told reporters: “ISIS is behind this attack definitely,” using a common acronym for Islamic State, and he named an Indonesian militant called Bahrun Naim as the man responsible for plotting it.
***Of note: Indonesia is slightly outside the boundaries of ISIS 5-Year Plan (see map below). However, with 2 million ISIS followers as of 2014 and some 6,000 inhabited islands flung across the equator, perhaps they will update their ‘map’ to include Indonesia as a foregone conclusion.

Headline:      Officials: China will join the war against ISIS

Defense officials revealed on Wednesday that China’s military will likely dispatch troops to take part in the global campaign against Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists in Syria and Iraq. China is worried about a growing trend among the Uyghur Muslim minority in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of western China, which has increasingly become a hotbed of support for ISIS. The Turkish army announced last month that of the 913 ISIS terrorists captured illegally crossing the border with Syria since January 2015, the vast majority have been Chinese Muslims. “The real question is whose side will they be on,” one defense official familiar with internal Chinese discussions on the matter told the Washington Times, regarding China’s intentions to take part in the campaign against ISIS. According to the officials, China will likely join in Russia’s airstrike campaign against ISIS which began last September, as opposed to joining the US-led international coalition fighting ISIS. The Russian strikes have also hit Western-backed rebels, sparking tensions.

Ethiopia is facing its worst drought in decades, leading the UN food agency to call Friday for an emergency cash injection of $50 million, Reuters reported. Crop production has fallen up to 90 percent in some regions and has failed completely in the country’s east. The drought is a consequence of an El Nino weather pattern that has caused significant declines in rain in some parts of the world and floods in others. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization said the drought had decimated Ethiopian livestock and threatened food supplies for 10.2 million people. Headline: Dozens feared exposed as Sierra Leone confirms new Ebola death

A woman who died of Ebola this week in Sierra Leone potentially exposed dozens of other people to the disease, according to an aid agency report on Friday, raising the risk of more cases just as the deadliest outbreak on record appeared to be ending. Just a day earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared that “all known chains of transmission have been stopped in West Africa” after Liberia joined Sierra Leone and Guinea in going six weeks with no reported new cases. The three countries had borne the brunt of a two-year epidemic that killed more than 11,300 people. The WHO warned of the potential for more flare-ups, as survivors can carry the virus for months. But the new case in Sierra Leone is especially disquieting because authorities failed to follow basic health protocols, according to the report seen by Reuters. Compiled by a humanitarian agency that asked not to be named, the document said the victim, Mariatu Jalloh, had come into contact with at least 27 people, including 22 in the house where she died and five who were involved in washing her corpse. But its account suggested others could also be at risk. Jalloh, 22, began showing symptoms at the beginning of the year, though the exact date is unknown, the report states. A student in Port Loko, the largest town in Sierra Leone’s Northern Province, she traveled to Bamoi Luma near the border with Guinea in late December. Sierra Leone’s northern border area, a maze of waterways, was one of the country’s last Ebola hot spots before it was declared Ebola-free on Nov. 7, and contact tracing was sometimes bedeviled by access problems.

Headline: Israel targets Palestinian militants in rare Gaza airstrike

Headline:Hamas threatens Israel following airstrike

The Israeli military carried out a rare airstrike in Gaza on Wednesday, targeting a group of Palestinian militants placing explosives along the border and killing one of them, Israeli and Palestinian officials said. The Israeli military said its aircraft located the group along Gaza’s northern border with Israel as they were planning to detonate an explosive device against Israeli troops on the other side. “Forces guarding the border with Gaza face a growing threat from hostile terror groups attempting to destabilize the situation on the ground,” said Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a military spokesman. The Palestinian Health Ministry said a 31-year-old man was killed in the strike and three others were wounded. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a militant group affiliated with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah group, later identified the deceased as a member, saying he was targeted while planting explosives. In a separate statement, Salah Bardawil, an official from Gaza’s ruling Islamic Hamas movement,  said Israel was “playing with fire” in the airstrike. He did not elaborate. The airstrike marked a rare flare-up along the Gaza border, which has remained largely calm since a devastating 50-day summer war in 2014.

Headline: IDF readying itself for threat from ISIS in the Sinai

A tense kind of quiet has characterized the Israel-Egypt border for the past year. The desert area has seen the threat of the Islamic State group grow in that time, leading the IDF to realize that it could end up affecting Israel directly – specifically its southern towns. The IDF has taken this danger to heart, and has been preparing. The IDF Southern Command has changed its war plans three times, updating them to fit the expected threat. For instance, troops are focusing more on fighting in urban areas and protecting southern Israeli agricultural farms, which may be vulnerable to infiltration by ISIS elements. The number of IDF troops along the border has been greatly reinforced as well: Tanks and artillery batteries have been spread throughout the area, and joint army-air force drills are being conducted. One of the main visible changes is the vehicles infantry forces are using: The Jeeps and humvees have been reinforced, and equipped with rooftop machine guns.

Headline: Israel Bars Doors to Swedish Foreign Minister Following More Incendiary Anti-Israel Remarks

Following an accusation by Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström alleging that Israel carries out “extrajudicial executions” of Palestinian terrorists, her Israeli counterpart Tzipi Hotovely said that Israel is “closing its doors to official visits from Sweden.” In remarks made to a cadets’ course for future Israeli diplomats, Deputy Foreign Minister Hotovely said that Wallström is “de facto supporting” terrorism with her recent incendiary remarks. On Tuesday, Wallström called for an investigation into alleged extrajudicial killings of Palestinian attackers, referring to those Palestinians who are killed while attempting to carry out terror attacks against Israelis and Jews. Wallström told lawmakers, “It is vital that there are thorough, credible investigations into these deaths in order to clarify and bring about possible accountability.” Hotovely called the remark “a terrible combination of foolishness and diplomatic stupidity.” Israel’s Foreign Ministry responded the same day with a statement strongly condemning Wallström’s comments, calling them “delusional.” “In her irresponsible and delusional statements, the Swedish foreign minister provides tailwind to terror, and thus encourages violence,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Headline: ISIS affiliate in Sinai threatens to stop Jordan’s natural gas supply

Headline: Obama, Jordan’s King Abdullah hold meeting at Andrews AFB

In the new volume of its weekly newspaper, Al-Nabah, released on Tuesday, ISIS directly threatened Jordan’s king Abdullah II, saying that: “Jordan’s apostate ruler will have natural gas only with the permission of Amir al-Mu’minin [ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi].” On January 8, the ISIS branch in Egypt, Sinai Province, attacked the El-Arish pipeline to Jordan, blowing up the pipeline which carries gas from Egypt to the Hashemite Kingdom. Since the Egyptian uprising of 2011, that vital pipeline has witnessed more than 30 attacks by terror organizations.
Following the attack, Sinai Province’s media institute released a statement on Twitter, claiming: “In a blessed operation, Islamic State soldiers attacked the pipeline that supplies natural gas to the apostate Jordanian government from the city of El-Arish. The statement was ended with a promise that “not a single cubic foot of gas will reach the insignificant state of Jordan without the permission of Amir al-Mu’minin,”adding that: “The jihadists will continue attacking the interests of the apostate rulers in the Middle East and their economic facilities, which they ironically use to fight Islam and the Muslims.”

Syria Headline:      Syrian troops seize territory from rebels in northwest

Backed by relentless Russian airstrikes, Syrian troops and allied militiamen on Wednesday pushed deeper into a major rebel stronghold in the northwestern province of Latakia, a day after seizing a key rebel-held town in the strategic region overlooking the coast, the government and opposition activists said. The insurgents in the opposition-held area near the Turkish border were collapsing after the town of Salma fell to government loyalists late Tuesday. Salma’s fall marked one of the most significant military victories by the Syrian military since Russia began airstrikes in the country last September to shore up President Bashar Assad’s forces. On Wednesday, government troops seized the villages of Mrouniyah and Marj Kawkah near Salma as they continued their advances in the region, aided by immense Russian firepower. “Whoever controls Salma gains control all those surrounding areas which it overlooks,” said Zakariya Ahmad, an opposition activist in the nearby Idlib province. He said the town fell after 93 days of fighting and daily barrel bombs and airstrikes. He said activists in the region had reported 92 airstrikes believed to be Russian on Salma in the last 24 hours before it was fully seized by government troops. “It was hell on earth,” he said.

Syria Headline:     Turkish artillery backs Syria rebel push on ISIS

Syrian rebels operating north of Aleppo backed by the reported help of Turkish artillery fire have gained ground against ISIS along a stretch of territory that Ankara aims to turn into a “safe zone.” Since the weekend, rebel factions in the Marea Operations Room regained four villages near the Turkish border that were seized by ISIS in a December offensive. In their latest victory on Wednesday morning, Free Syrian Army-affiliated groups and Islamist battalions swept into the village of Baghdin following fierce overnight fighting, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Sham Legion announced Wednesday that it had wrested the village of Baghdin on the Syrian-Turkish border from ISIS, in the most recent in a slow series of advances against the group that have reportedly been achieved with Turkish support. “The Sham Legion announces the total liberation of the village of Baghdin in northern Aleppo countryside from ISIS’s Kharijite gangs,” the moderate Islamist coalition said in a post on its Twitter feed, using an insulting Islamic term to refer to its adversary. Over the past four days, insurgent groups in the Marea Operations Room have seized the nearby areas of Qarah Kubri, Qarah Mazraa and Al-Khirbeh, all of which lie to the east of Baghdin. As the rebels fought against transnational group in the pitched battles in the northern Aleppo border region, reports began to emerge that Turkey was pummeling ISIS with artillery fire. The ISIS-affiliated A3maq news agency reported Saturday that Turkish forces where shelling the village of Qarah Kubri with heavy artillery, with the outlet reporting further shelling the following day when opposition forces began their offensive inside the town. Later that Sunday, Islamist battalions marched into Qarah Kubri, while also capturing nearby Al-Khirbeh from ISIS. A pro-Syrian rebel outlet also reported Turkish artillery support for the rebels in the Marea Operations Room over the weekend.

Mosul

Iraq Headline:     Report: US-led coalition bombs ISIS ‘bank’ housing ‘millions of dollars’

An ISIS storage facility housing “millions of dollars” in cash was bombed by US-led coalition forces in the Iraqi city of Mosul, AFP reported Monday. “We estimate in the millions of dollars… from all their illicit stuff: oil, looting, extortion,” a US defense official told AFP on the condition of anonymity. Multiple 2,000 pound bombs hit the storage facility, killing between five and seven civilians in the operation, CNN first reported earlier in the day. The US and its coalition of Western and Arab allies have been increasing their targeting of the terrorist organization’s money making capabilities, including bombing trucks ferrying oil across Syria and Iraq. here’s the most interesting part of the story, which is at the end: The U.S. considers the Mosul strike extremely sensitive, as the building is in an area where civilians are also located, and there was a significant risk of civilian casualties. . . .  U.S. commanders had been willing to consider up to 50 civilian casualties from the airstrike due to the importance of the target. But the initial post-attack assessment indicated that perhaps five to seven people were killed. In recent weeks, the U.S. has said it will assess all targets on a case-by-case basis and may be more willing to tolerate civilians casualties for more significant targets.

Iraq Headline:   Sunni mosques in east Iraq attacked

At least seven Sunni mosques and dozens of shops in eastern Iraq were firebombed on Tuesday. Ten people were also shot and killed in Muqdadiya, 80km northeast of Baghdad, security and hospital sources said. Witnesses said some of those killed on Tuesday had been shot inside their homes or dragged into the street and executed by gunmen wearing black and camouflage uniforms. Police sources and local residents said the gunmen were patrolling Muqdadiya and warning families through loudspeakers to leave the city or face death. Reuters could not verify these accounts. Two Iraqi journalists were also killed on Tuesday outside Baqouba, Diyala’s provincial capital 65km northeast of Baghdad, according to police, a security official and their network Sharqiya TV. They said the men had been turned back from a checkpoint near Muqdadiya run by a Shiite militia. On their way back to Baqouba, gunmen sprayed their vehicle with automatic gunfire. Earlier in the day, a suicide bomber attacked a police convoy near Baqouba, critically wounding a senior police officer and killing three other members of the security forces, police said.

Headline: Istanbul suicide bomber registered at refugee agency a week before attack

Terrorism struck in the heart of Istanbul on Tuesday when a suicide bomber, allegedly affiliated with Islamic State, targeted a square with views of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in the early morning. Ten were killed and at least 15 were wounded in the attack. All 10 victims were foreigners, according to Ankara, which noted the square is popular with tourists. One victim was a Peruvian and, later in the day, Berlin confirmed that nine of the dead were German nationals. Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the assailant is believed to have crossed into the country in past weeks from its border with Syria; however, he was not on Turkey’s watch list of suspected terrorists. Tuesday’s attack is the second terrorist strike against Turkey in recent months, after a bombing in Ankara on October 10 killed 102 and wounded hundreds. Russia, which has sanctioned Turkey ever since Ankara shot down a Russian jet in Syrian airspace in November, condemned the attack and said the carnage should remind the world of the need to unite against terrorism. Moscow says it is intervening in the Syrian war on behalf of its nominal president, Bashar Assad, in order to fight terrorist organizations – Islamic State chief among them. And the attacker, who had not yet been identified by the time of this publication, was said by Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to have been a member of Islamic State. “Until we wipe out Daesh, Turkey will continue its fight at home and with coalition forces,” he said in comments broadcasted live on television, using the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

Headline:  Iranian footage shows US sailor apology, arrest in Gulf incident

Within hours of releasing 10 U.S. sailors who apparently had drifted into their territorial waters, the Iranian government was using footage from the incident as a propaganda tool – including images of sailors on their knees with their hands behind their heads and a video showing a sailor apologizing. “It was a mistake. That was our fault. And we apologize for our mistake,” the sailor said, in a brief state TV clip posted on Twitter by a journalist with Iran’s Tasnim News Agency. Secretary of State John Kerry and others have cited the peaceful resolution as a “testament” to diplomacy and the new U.S.-Iran relationship, as they welcome Iran into the “community of nations.” But the various images and clips of the sailors since circulated by Iranian media could prove embarrassing. Images purported to show the sailors with their hands over their heads when they were arrested, and Iranian officials boarding their ships. In the video clip of the apology, a sailor identified as the “commander” is being interviewed about his team’s actions. He apologizes, and also seems to acknowledge they drifted into Iranian territorial waters. In response, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Wednesday that the department would assess whether the video is authentic. He noted images of prisoners are not supposed to be shown under the terms of the Geneva Convention.

Headline: Nuclear deal to be implemented by Sunday, Iran says

The final implementation of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers is expected by Sunday, Iranian state media said Wednesday, quoting Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. A report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, concluding that Iran had fulfilled its obligations under the agreement, will come out on Friday, broadcaster IRIB quoted Araqchi as saying, paving the way for sanctions to end. The IAEA findings would be followed by “reaching the end of the line and the announcement of the implementation during Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” the official IRNA news agency quoted Araqchi as saying. There was no immediate confirmation from the IAEA of Araqchi’s comments about the timing of “Implementation Day” when the deal comes into effect, but US and European officials have recently said it could be just days away.

Headline:   IS Claims Attack on Pakistan Consulate in Afghanistan

Officials in eastern Afghanistan said a gun and bomb attack Wednesday near the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad killed seven security personnel and wounded 10 people, including three civilians. Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for the assault. Afghan police and witnesses said the attack began with several massive explosions near the consulate, which is located near India’s consulate, a hospital and several schools. The provincial police chief, General Fazal Mohammad Sherzad told reporters that three attackers were targeting the Pakistani consulate and planned to enter the facility from an adjacent guest house. But he said security forces surrounded the house and killed them in a two-hour gunfight. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack and said only one consulate official was slightly injured by broken glass. A ministry statement said Pakistan has asked the Afghan government to “thoroughly investigate this incident” and to ensure the safety of Pakistani diplomatic missions and officials in Afghanistan.

Headline:      Libya repels ISIS assault on oil terminal

Libyan guards said Monday they repelled a maritime assault by ISIS on Zueitina oil terminal in the north of the country. ISIS tried last week to seize export terminals in the so-called “oil crescent” of northern Libya, killing 56 people in two suicide bombings in Zliten and Ras Lanouf, east of Tripoli. “On Sunday night, the guards intercepted three boats trying to enter the oil port of Zueitina,” Ali al-Hassi, spokesman for the guards protecting oil facilities for Libya’s recognised government. “They opened fire and hit one of the boats. The other two made off but returned a short while later to tow the vessel which had been hit,” he said. “We can say it was ISIS because we’d received information that ISIS would try to enter Zueitina by sea,” the spokesman told AFP. ISIS has been trying for several weeks to push east from its coastal stronghold of Sirte, threatening to seize control of Libya’s oil wealth.

Headline: Seven dead in fire at Algeria beach resort

Seven people died when a deliberately lit fire tore through a tourism complex at a beach resort on the outskirts of the Algerian capital Wednesday, the civil defense service said. The blaze erupted around 2:30 am (0130 GMT) at a bungalow in the Azur complex in Zeralda, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of Algiers, official news agency APS quoted the civil defense service as saying. A police official later told state television that the fire was of criminal origin, and that three suspects were identified and being sought. All of the seven people killed were Algerians, who were between 25 and 35 years old and included two women. They all died of asphyxiation.

A suicide bomber killed 12 people in northern Cameroon on Wednesday when he blew himself up at a mosque during morning prayers. Officials say the early morning attack occurred in Kouyape, a village near the border with Nigeria. There has been no official claim of responsibility, but the incident took place in an area often targeted by the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram.

Headline: Bomb near Pakistan polio centre ‘kills 15’

At least 15 people have been killed in a suspected suicide bombing outside a polio vaccination centre in the south-western Pakistani city of Quetta. Many of the casualties are thought to have been police guarding the clinic. Armed guards are routine for polio workers in Pakistan, who have been the target of many deadly attacks by Islamist militants in recent years. Militants oppose polio vaccination, saying it is a Western conspiracy to sterilise Pakistani children. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries where the disease is still endemic. The explosion took place in the morning as polio workers and security staff were reporting for duty before heading out on their vaccination rounds, said Sarfaraz Bugti, a minister in Balochistan province of which Quetta is the capital. Quetta’s deputy commissioner, Dawood Khilji, said the death toll had risen to 15, with 14 police officers and one passer-by confirmed dead. About 20 people were injured.

Headline:    Report: S. Korea fires warning shots at North’s drone

South Korea fired warning shots after a North Korean drone briefly entered its territory Wednesday, according to South Korean media. The drone, which was seen flying above a South Korean military observatory post at the border between the two countries, “immediately” returned to North Korea, the South’s Yonhap news agency reported, citing officials. The United Nations Security Council pledged to pursue new sanctions against the North after it claimed that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb on Jan. 6. On Wednesday, South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye’s urged China, North Korea’s main ally, to “play a necessary role” in the sanctions. The Chinese government has said it strongly opposes the reported test. Park’s televised comments came after Seoul said North Korea sent leaflets across the border describing Park and her government as “mad dogs,” the Associated Press reported. On Tuesday, North Korea said it is ready to detonate hydrogen bombs capable of wiping out the United States “all at once,” Yonhap reported.

Headline: Trans-Pacific Partnership: Serious Rights Concerns

The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) economic and trade agreement raises numerous human rights concerns despite unprecedented efforts to address labor issues, Human Rights Watch said today in a new Q & A. The TPP’s rights problems should be addressed before the agreement enters into force, Human Rights Watch said. “As the TPP moves toward ratification, policymakers should reflect carefully on how the agreement will affect over 800 million people living in Pacific Rim countries,” said Sarah Margon, Washington Director at Human Rights Watch. “The TPP is a far-reaching agreement whose human rights harms should be addressed now before they are replicated in future trade and economic agreements worldwide.” The agreement should have gone further to protect labor rights, and there are serious concerns with provisions related to the right to health, free expression and privacy online. The agreement’s labor chapter and associated bilateral agreements do not have adequate labor rights safeguards for countries with poor labor rights records, like Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and Brunei. Another concern raised in the Q & A is that the TPP’s provisions affecting the pharmaceutical industry, which extend monopolistic patent and regulatory protections, will make it more difficult for people to affordably obtain life-saving medicines. In addition, the TPP’s copyright provisions could make it easier for governments to abuse intellectual property rules to stifle online dissent.

Wall Street turned decidedly negative in late-afternoon action as consumer discretionary names and the energy sector weighed on the major averages. As of 2:30 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 315 points, or 1.91% to 16200. The S&P 500 declined 42 points, or 2.21% to 1894, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 146 points, or 3.12% to 4541. Utilities was the only sector in positive territory, seeing gains of 0.61%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq, which narrowly averted a nine-session losing streak on Tuesday, quickly reverted back to negative territory on Wednesday when it dropped more than 2%, notching a fresh three-month low. Consumer discretionary names were the biggest losers on the session as companies like Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) dropped on no particular news.  The e-commerce giant shed nearly 12% year to date after booking gains of 118% last year. The stock was the Nasdaq’s biggest decliner. Only three of the 30 Dow components were in positive territory – they included Procter and Gamble (PG), Coca-Cola (KO) and ExxonMobil (XOM), despite fresh selling pressure in the energy sector.

Headline:   Suit filed in Akron federal court to remove ‘In God We Trust’ from currency

A California lawyer has filed a suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio to stop the government from printing money with the phrase “In God We Trust.” The lawsuit, filed on Monday in Akron, names defendants like U.S. Congress, Secretary of the Treasury Jacob J. Lew and Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing Leonard R. Olijar. The attorney filing the suit is Michael Newdow, who has long been fighting to have the words “Under God” removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. Newdow, an atheist, also filed a lawsuit in 2009 to prevent references to God from being used in President Barack Obama’s inauguration. Newdow and Westlake attorney Thomas M. Horwitz write in court documents that currency minted or printed with the words “In God We Trust” violations the First Amendment, the Fifth Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. “Plaintiffs either specifically do not trust in any ‘G-d’ (with NOT trusting G-d being a basic tenet of their belief systems) or hold G-d’s name so dear and exalted that to inscribe it on a monetary instrument is deemed sinful,” court documents said. Plaintiffs include two Summit County children and their father, who is an atheist. According to court documents, the discussion of “In G-d We Trust” in schools opens the kids up to ridicule.

Headline: Hurricane Pali sets record for being earliest; closest to equator

Chalk up another wacky weather element to this winter’s near-record El Nino churning in the Pacific Ocean. Hurricane Pali just set a record for the earliest hurricane on record in the Central Pacific Ocean, getting the classification on Jan. 11 at 10 p.m. EST as wind speeds hit an estimated 90 mph. It’s over 1,300 miles away from Hawaii and poses no threat to land. According to the Weather Channel, it beats the record more than two weeks, besting Hurricane Ekeka, which reached hurricane status on Jan. 30, 1992 (also during a strong El Nino winter.) Hurricane season doesn’t even officially begin until June 1 in the Pacific, but this storm is managing to hold together due to extremely warm ocean temperatures approaching the mid 80s. But that’s not the only record set by Pali. It’s also the record for southern-most hurricane to live in the Northern/Western Hemisphere (i.e. closest to approach the equator): Why is hitting the equator so difficult for a hurricane? There’s little-to-zero Coriolis Force around the equator which is needed to help the storm spin and maintain strength. No tropical storm or hurricane has ever crossed the equator, but some forecast tracks have Pali getting as close as 2-4 degrees north latitude.

Video on Islam facts you need to know!  http://video.slimail.com/QXIcgUVVnZU

We know Jesus warns us that in the last days the Antichrist would come. Since being in the ministry all these years I have seen a host of people who people call the Antichrist and over the years all of these people turned out not to be the Antichrist.  The latest person to be added to that list is President Obama. There is a new news report pointing out that after Obama leaves office in 2016 he want to be the Head of the UN. At this point nothing can be confirmed for sure. Even if later on we see that this story is true it does not mean that Obama is in fact the Antichrist. The Antichrist of the Bible is someone who will come on the scene and the world will fall in love, a man with great powers, a wise man that we have never seen before of course that excludes Jesus because there is no person who even come close to our Lord’s wisdom!  The Bible tells us what the Antichrist is going to do so if you wait and watch the news if Obama were the Antichrist you would see that things God warned about come to pass via Obama.

What is the first thing you should look for?  In Daniel chapter 9 God shows us the Antichrist will make a covenant with Israel and many nations for a period of 7 years.  I can’t see Obama doing any such thing as Israel disdains Obama and, as you will see from the report below Israel’s Prime Ministry has according to this report stated  vowed to counter the Obama campaign to head the UN.  So at least at this point I can’t see Israel taking any type of peace agreement with Obama in the near future.  For the past 7 years the world have watch Obama fail on the world scene. He has failed to bring in any type of peace which by the way the Bible shows that when the real Antichrist comes he will bring on peace.  Here are some reasons why I do not believe Obama that man of sin.

The Bible has many references to Assyria playing a major role in the end times. The Antichrist is called the Assyrian by Isaiah many times and by Micah as this man coming from the land of Assyria which will be the land to be devastated during the return of Jesus Christ to save Israel from the invasion of the Assyrian (Micah 5:5-6).  This man of sin is also known to us in Isa. 14:4 as the “King of Babylon” .  The nations God points to in these prophecies are the nations that were in power in the Old Testament and they would be the same nations that the world would see the Antichrist come out of.  Many want you to believe that America is Babylon and Obama is from this modern day Babylon.  Even if that was the case which it is not Obama is not from Syria nor from Babylon as shown to us in the Old Testament.  Remember where Obama said he was from? Kenya!  That alone would x him out of the prophecy picture as seen my Micah and Isaiah.  Friends, where God speaks of Syria and Babylon that is who He means. These are the same nations of the Old Testament in the same places. The only difference is the leaders have changed over these many years.  When the Antichrist comes he will come out of the Middle East from the nations God shows us.

In short, let us keep on the watch to see the signs Jesus left us concerning the Antichrist.  Keep in mind, any new peace plan any man makes with Israel and the many nations has to be for a period of 7 years or it would not fit the warning God gave Daniel.  As for me,  Obama just doesn’t fit those warnings God left us concerning the man of sin.

Headline: Claims Obama Wants to Be Next UN Secretary General

Al –Jarida, an Arabic language Kuwaiti magazine, published an article on Friday claiming that US President Barack Obama has set his sights on becoming the next Secretary General of the United Nations when he leaves the Oval Office in one year.

If true, and if he succeeds in this endeavor, Obama would be replacing the present Secretary General, South Korea’s Ban Ki-Moon, who is serving his second five-year term in the position. Ban’s term as Secretary General is set to end December 31, 2016, coincidentally 21 days before Obama’s second term as President ends. Al-Jarida attributed the rumor to “informed sources”.

The article also claimed that upon hearing of President Obama’s plans, Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu “vowed to counter his campaign.” They quoted Netanyahu as saying, “Eight years of Obama’s judgments and marginalizing Israel was not enough? Now he wants to be in a position to cause us trouble in the international forum?”

Al-Jarida was credited with starting a wildfire of rumors in the international press when it printed a story in March, quoting an Israeli source, that Obama halted an airstrike by Israel against targets in Iran by threatening to shoot down the Israeli bombers.  The story was picked up by media around the world, but was quelled when the White House denied there was any basis to the story.

Headline: Report: Israeli air force strikes Hezbollah in Qalamoun, Syria

Syrian opposition sources claim the Israeli air force conducted airstrikes against Hezbollah positions in the mountainous Qalamoun region, along the border with Lebanon. The alleged strikes were first reported by Syrian opposition outlet 7alpress, which claimed on Twitter that “two consecutive Israeli raids” targeted Hezbollah positions outside the town of Flita late Sunday night. A subsequent report added that ambulance sirens were heard in Yabrud, southeast of Flita, “after Israeli aircraft targeted Hezbollah’s positions.” Lebanon’s Now. news site cited several other rebel sources, some of whom said they counted as many as five strikes by aircraft on Hezbollah targets. Other Lebanese media sources also reported on “unidentified” explosions in the area. Israel is believed to have repeatedly struck Hezbollah positions and weapons convoys in Syria, as part of efforts to prevent the Iranian proxy group obtaining “game-changing” sophisticated weaponry, as well as to thwart attacks by Hezbollah and affiliated terrorist groups along the Golan Heights border with Israel. The last reported Israeli air strike in Syria eliminated arch-terrorist Samir Kuntar, a one-time Hezbollah commander who was reportedly drafted by Iranian special forces to set up anti-Israel terror cells in southern Syria. However, Israeli government officials have never commented openly about the strikes, as part of the government’s policy of ambiguity regarding operations in the civil war-torn country.

Jordan has been selected to establish an international judicial committee to inspect Israel’s “violations” on the Temple Mount, the Amman-based daily Al-Rai reported on Sunday. This role was assigned to Jordan, which is recognized by many as the custodian of the holy places in Jerusalem, during a conference that took place recently in Egypt, assembling Arab judicial experts. Faisal Hizahi, an international judicial specialist, will chair the committee; he said it will inspect and document all the “violations” that harm the holy places in Jerusalem, and initiate criminal procedures against Israel in the International Criminal Court at The Hague. In addition, Hizahi stated that the white paper submitted by the conference emphasized the central role of Jordan’s king, Abdullah II, in inspecting the “daily violations committed by Israel in Jerusalem” and forming a united international stance toward them.

Senior Hezbollah militants tell US news outlet that Russia is providing the terrorist group with weapons including long-range missiles and laser-guided rockets. Furthermore, one adds, Russia has placed no restrictions on their weapons being used against Israel. The militants, who spoke with reporters from US media outlet The Daily Beast, said that they are receiving the arms with “no strings attached” and that as far as the Syrian civil war goes, the Assad regime, Hezbollah, Iran and Russia are operating in complete concert with one another. According to The Daily Beast, they met the Hezbollah commanders in Beirut’s Dahiya suburb on two separate occasions – once at the end of December and again at the beginning of 2016. The pair, who were apparently not authorized to speak to the media and therefore did not provide their names, said that Russia is arming Hezbollah with “long-range tactical missiles, laser guided rockets, and anti-tank weapons.” One of the field commanders, who dubbed himself Commander Bakr, told The Daily Beast: “We are strategic allies in the Middle East right now – the Russians are our allies and give us weapons. “The intervention of the Russians made it much easier (for us),” he continued. “Without their air force we can’t advance and they couldn’t give us air support without our information from the ground.” Russian officials did not respond to The Daily Beast’s request for a comment.

Headline:     Saudi protesters fire-bomb intelligence building in Qatif

A group of masked men threw firebombs at an intelligence service compound in the city of Qatif in eastern Saudi Arabia, activists said on Monday, in an alleged revenge attack for the execution of a prominent Shia cleric by Saudi authorities at the beginning of January. According to Reuters, a Saudi Interior Ministry spokesman said “there was a failed terrorist attempt to burn the building with Molotov cocktails” and that one of the assailants was captured. An activist told Middle East Eye that three people have been arrested in relation to the attack on the intelligence building. Baher al-Mahroos, 20, remains in detention while the two other men who were not identified were released. “The attack took place Sunday early morning between 3:30-4:00am,” the activist, who wished to remain anonymous, said. One resident expressed his concern that such attacks would further escalate matters, leading to a crackdown by Saudi authorities. “Protesters are very worried about this. They want to keep everything peaceful,” the resident said. “The attack happened near a march [on Sunday], which was peaceful. We don’t want people to start being violent.” Tensions have remained high in the Shia-populated Qatif region over the past two weeks following the execution of prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

Headline:   Arab League Accuses Iran of ‘Provocations’

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi accused Tehran of “provocative acts” as top Arab diplomats met on Jan. 10 for talks on Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic row with Iran. Arabi was addressing Arab League foreign ministers gathered in Cairo for emergency talks requested by Riyadh on the dispute, which erupted after Saudi Arabia executed prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr. Arabi called on diplomats meeting at the group’s Cairo headquarters to “adopt a strong and clear common position calling on Iran to stop all forms of interference in the affairs of Arab nations.” Nimr’s execution earlier this month touched off anti-Saudi demonstrations in many Shiite countries including in Iran where demonstrators sacked and set fire to the Saudi embassy. Riyadh cut diplomatic ties with Shiite-dominated Tehran the day after the attack and was followed by a number of its Sunni Arab allies including Bahrain and Sudan. Other Arab countries downgraded ties or recalled their envoys to Tehran. The dispute between the Middle East’s dominant Sunni and Shiite powers has raised fears of greater regional instability and concerns for peace efforts in Syria and Yemen, where Saudi Arabia and Iran support opposing sides.

Monitors said airstrikes on a rebel-held town in northwestern Syria killed dozens of people Saturday, including civilians, fighters and prisoners. But the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights did not say whether the strikes in Idlib province were carried out by Syrian or allied Russian warplanes, which have both bombed the area in recent weeks. The observatory said at least 39 people were killed in the strikes, which hit a courthouse and an adjoining prison under the control of al-Qaida-linked al-Nusra militants in Maarat al-Numan. Early accounts said dozens more were wounded, and that the targeted facilities included the group’s religious court and a jail. Western news reports said the buildings were struck by four missiles and the number of fatalities was likely to rise.

Syria Headline:     Russian airstrikes in Syria kill 12 children

The Russian military is being blamed for an attack on a Syrian school that killed at least 12 children Monday. Three adults were also killed in the airstrike Monday on a school in rebel-held territory in Ain Jara, about 10 miles north of the city of Aleppo, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. The agency added that in a separate incident, three children died in rocket fire on an Aleppo district held by the Syrian government. Russian airstrikes on Islamic State and Syrian anti-government targets have been responsible for the deaths of 1,730 civilians since Russian military involvement in Syria began in September, the Syrian National Coalition said. Nearly 100 were killed in airstrikes on the town of Maraat al-Numan on Saturday in Syria’s Idlib province. While Russia says its attacks are aimed at the Islamic State, its planes regularly bomb targets in areas not controlled by IS, prompting observers to suggest Russia’s mission in Syria is more directed at enemies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad‘s government. “Nearly 94 percent of the 12,000 sorties the Russian air force has so far flown in Syria targeted civilians and the Free Syrian Army,” the SNC said in a statement.

Iraq Headline:    ISIS claims responsibility for Baghdad mall siege that left 18 dead

The Islamic State group is claiming responsibility for the Baghdad mall attack that killed 18 people on Monday. Gunmen stormed into the Jawhara Mall after setting off a car bomb and launching a suicide attack at its entrance. Iraqi officials say the attack which lasted over an hour, killed at least 18 people and wounded 50 in the city’s mainly Shiite east. The IS statement, posted online shortly after the attack, said a car bomb and four IS fighters carried out the attack, targeting an area where many Shiite Muslims are known to gather and warned of “worse” to come. Iraqi officials say the attack was carried out by seven men, one of whom died when he detonated his explosive vest at the start of the Iraqi officials initially described the attack as a hostage situation, estimating that 50 people were trapped inside the complex. But Iraqi forces soon surrounded the building and landed troops on the roof. They clashed with the attackers inside, killing two of them, and arresting the other four. At least four police officers were among those killed in the assault, which lasted around an hour and a half, according to police and medical officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. Following the attack, authorities shut down the city’s highly fortified Green Zone, home to a number of foreign embassies and most of the country’s political elite. A number of major roads, shopping malls and bridges around the Iraqi capital were also closed for fear of follow-up attacks.

Also on Monday evening, a car bomb in southeast Baghdad in a crowded market area killed five and wounded 12, according to hospital and police officials. Another deadly attack was carried out in the town of Muqdadiyah, about 60 miles north of Baghdad in Diyala province. A double suicide bombing at a cafe killed 24 and wounded 52, according to hospital and police officials. Police officials say the cafe was frequented by militia fighters under the government-sanctioned Popular Mobilization Forces and many fighters are among the dead.

Diyarbakir

Kurdish Headline:  Turkey waging brutal battle in siege on Kurdish stronghold

Turkey is continuing to press its brutal siege on the Kurdish de facto capital. Kurds represent about 20 percent of Turkey’s population, and Kurdish fighters have been the only successful fighting force against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL). The months-long battle for Diyarbakir, a walled city on the Tigris River, has claimed hundreds of lives and observers see no end in sight. Kurdish militants are said to view the battle as perhaps preserving their last chance at self rule, the Wall Street Journal reported. “This is something bigger than us,” said local businessman Sahismail Bedirhanoglu. “It has to do with Middle East dynamics.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has attempted to silence Kurdish leaders, with many of them under detention. In Diyarbakir, more than 440 Kurdish fighters have been killed since Turkey sent in 10,000 security forces last month. “We respect people’s freedom of expression, but it becomes unacceptable when it turns to armed resistance,” a Turkish official said. Since July, more than 194 civilians have been killed across southeastern Turkey, according to the International Crisis Group. Many see the siege on Diyarbakir as part of a new attempt by the Turkish government to eliminate Kurdish aspirations for autonomy.

Headline:  Iran removes core of Arak reactor, looks to sanctions relief

Iran is on the verge of finishing work to dismantle its Arak heavy water nuclear reactor, paving the way for a complete lifting of international sanctions, officials said on Monday. Iran Atomic Energy Organization spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi told the Iranian daily Etemad that the work will be completed in about a week, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. Iran agreed to take apart the controversial reactor in exchange for sanctions relief as part of the landmark nuclear agreement hammered out with world powers last year. “We have almost completed all undertakings based on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and no job has remained,” Kamalvandi said. He added that remaining work “can be carried out in less than 7 days.” A source told Fars that the central component of the reactor was removed. “The heart of Arak Heavy Water Reactor was taken out today,” the source said. “The operation was accomplished today and the core has been filled with cement.”

Headline: Afghan forces regain control of key district in Takhar

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul warned Monday it has received reports that militants plan to kidnap an American and other Europeans working for an NGO in Afghanistan. The “emergency message” from the embassy said: “The U.S. Embassy in Kabul has received reports that as of early January 2016 an unspecified group of militants plan to kidnap an unidentified American and unidentified Europeans who are employees of an unidentified non-governmental organization (NGO) in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.” The notice did not identify the individuals who may be at risk, or the non-governmental organization (NGO) in question. The notice said the embassy does not have any further information on the “timing, target, location, or method of any planned kidnappings.” The only other detail provided is that the employees in question “reportedly travel from Kabul City, Kabul Province, Afghanistan, to Nangarhar Province at unspecified intervals and possibly serve in an advisory role to the NGO.” The message comes at a time of heightened alert in Afghanistan, where threats from the Taliban and other groups continue to rise.

Headline:    Militants hit Benghazi oil plants

A major power plant in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi was been attacked by militants, an army commander and a plant employee said on Saturday. The employee said the shelling started late on Friday evening and continued into the morning, shutting down one of the plant’s units and starting a fire that sent black smoke billowing into the sky. The fire was later extinguished, he said. Military Commander Fadhal al-Hassi told Reuters Islamic State fighters were to blame. This could not be independently confirmed, though other Islamist groups operating in Benghazi do not tend to target civilian infrastructure.

Headline: Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb threatens to attack Rome, Naples and Madrid

AL-Qaida in North Africa has continued to escalate its rhetoric against France, threatening to commit more terror attacks in Western capitals to force Paris to stop its military intervention in Mali. On January 6, the media institute of the AL-Qaida-affiliated organization released a video titled “From the Desert’s depth,” in which the Malian fighter, Abu Basir al-Bamari, who was recently released from a prison in Mali, urged the Muslims in Mali to take up arms to “fight against the French infiltrators” in order to restore Sharia law in the country. To achieve its aim – ending the French intervention in Mali – the organization threatened to attack the West: “We will strike them in Naples, in Rome, in Madrid. The blasts will be everywhere.” The video also presents images of the fighting already taking place in Mali between the al-Qaida-affiliated organization and UN peace keeping forces, which are composed mainly of French soldiers.

Headline:   North Korea puts U.S., South Korea forces on highest alert

North Korea is likely to engage in additional provocations, top U.S. and South Korea military commanders said Monday. Both U.S. and South Korea forces were placed on the highest alert level Monday, and Seoul said new restrictions are to be introduced at the Kaesong Industrial Complex, a joint North-South factory park in North Korea, South Korean television network SBS reported. Curtis Scaparrotti, the commander of U.S. forces in Korea and Lee Soon-jin, chairman of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, told combined U.S.-South Korea forces to stand ready, Yonhap reported. “I want you to maintain the highest-level readiness position with a long-term view because planned joint military exercises are ahead,” Scaparrotti said. Lee, who was conducting a joint inspection of air force units, said there is a “very high likelihood” North Korea would undertake more provocative acts, and precautions are necessary.

Headline: Vanuatu on red alert as Cyclone Ula, category 4 storm, approaches

Residents of Vanuatu are taking shelter as a category four cyclone brings heavy rain and strong winds to the same area devastated by the largest cyclone in the South Pacific island nation’s history last year, aid workers said on Sunday. Disaster management authorities have issued a red alert for islands in Tafea, the southernmost of Vanuatu’s six provinces, a spokesman of CARE Australia told Reuters. “Most people are sheltering in schools and churches, the only permanent buildings on these islands,” Sam Bolitho said. “Some people are also sheltering in caves.” The eye of the storm, Ula, is not expected to pass over any islands but the ring of the cyclone was causing damage, Bolitho said in an email. Islanders are bracing for winds expected to reach up to 165 kmph (100 mph), besides flash flooding, landslides and storm surges. Last March, tropical cyclone Pam, a category 5 storm, the highest classification, wiped out more than 90 percent of Vanuatu’s crops, tore up homes and power networks, killed 11 and disrupted the lives of most of its 252,800 people.
