I listened to John Shorey’s description of the Book of Revelation again. Now I remember what it was that he said that was not correct.
No where does it say that there must be a one-world government for the Anti-Christ to take over.
No where does it say that the Temple has to be built for the Anti-Christ to take over.
No where does it say that the 10 Kingdoms have to be in place for the Anti-Christ to take over.
He goes on and on about the head wound of the Anti-Christ. That does not have to happen until later in his reign.
No where does it say that the Anti-Christ will have power over the Christians immediately. the Anti-Christ comes in peace (Rev. 6) and he does not go after everyone until the midpoint of the tribulation (Rev. 12). The Book fo Daniel also proves this: ( 9:27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven. In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”)
The events above will happen, but he is saying all of the events have to happen either before the Anti-Christ comes out, or at the exact time the Anti-Christ comes out.
If you read in Revelation, you see these events happen over the 7 years. In fact, the Anti-Christ does not go after the Jews & Christians until Revelation 12. That means that there will be 3.5 years of strife on the earth (earthquakes, disaster, etc.,) but no persecution from the Anti-Christ. The trouble that is coming is all focused the unbelieving, the quasi-Christians who were left behind and the Jews. It is God’s heart to reach the lost Jews and this is the last opportunity for them to get saved.
I see it like this… We Christians who do faithfully love and follow God cannot be here when the Anti-Christ takes over.
Jesus knows that the anti-Christ will be so smart and convincing, that if we are here on the earth during the tribulation, we would all be deceived and we would lose our salvation. (Mark 13:22 for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect.)
Also… Besides being deceived, we would be forced to take the mark of the beast and we would lose our salvation. Why would God make all the Christians damned? Is this what God wants for His chosen people? Would He want us to go through this? That would not be fair. God has to rescue the true believers from that deceit. (Revelation 13:16 – It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,)
God’s wrath is going to fall upon the unsaved, or as the Book of Revelation states, the “inhabitants of the earth”. If you look in the Book of Revelation, you will see this term is used 6 times. Remember, Christians are not citizens of earth, we are citizens of Heaven.

Headline: Billions of Dollars of Gold Discovered Under Eilat Mountains to be Used to Rebuild Third Jewish Temple
A treasure-trove of raw gold worth billions of dollars is believed to be sitting under Mount Eilat in southern Israel, Breaking Israel News has learned. In an exclusive interview, Rabbi Yehuda Glick, the Executive Director of The Temple Mount Heritage Foundation in Jerusalem, revealed the news, which had been kept under wraps for the last several years. Glick is perhaps best known for his life’s mission of assuring that the Temple Mount is accessible to all people from every religion who want to worship at the holy site. His dedication to the Temple Mount resulted in an October 2014 assassination attempt on his life by a Palestinian terrorist. Shot four times in the chest, Glick has made a miraculous recovery and continues his work to open the Temple Mount to prayer for all peoples. Glick told Breaking Israel News that there are billions of dollars worth of gold in Mount Eilat, which he and his partner, Yehoshua Friedman, have received an exclusive license to unearth by the Israeli government. Explaining the discovery, Glick said that everything began with Friedman, a Temple Mount researcher who had been studying each of the 12 unique stones set on the breastplate of the High Priest as described in the Bible. Each stone represents one of the 12 tribes of Israel. During his studies, Friedman realized that without a geology background he could not properly appreciate the depths and meanings behind each of these stones. This led to his discovery that in 2007 gold had been found in the mountains of Eilat by an Australian research team, who later abandoned the dig because the value of gold at the time was not worth their efforts.

Headline: Islamic Jihad Threatens Israel Over Flotilla
Five years after the Mavi Marmara scandal, a new flotilla leaving for Gaza could cause another international crisis, Channel 2 reports Monday. A senior official from the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad has reportedly threatened to break the Egyptian-brokered cease-fire that ended last summer’s conflict in Gaza if Israel stops any new flotillas attempting to break the naval blockade of the Strip. The flotilla is expected to join with several Swedish ships this week – and when it approaches Gaza, Islamic Jihad leader Khaled al-Batash has threatened to end the ceasefire with Israel if the Jewish state attempts to stop the provocateurs. The flotilla has been dubbed “Freedom Flotilla 3,” a maritime challenge to Israel’s legal naval blockade on the coastal enclave of Gaza which is controlled by the Hamas terrorist organization. It’s been backed by the European Campaign to Break the Siege on Gaza. Members of the European Parliament, journalists, athletes, artists, as well as radical leftist Israelis will be on board.

Israel pledged Tuesday to protect any refugees who fled towards the Jewish state after a rebel offensive in Syria and Islamist violence there raised fears about the Druze minority’s safety. A significant number of Druze live in Israel, and leading members of the community have called on the government to help their brethren in Syria following the recent violence. Without mentioning the Druze, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot said the authorities were preparing for a possible influx of Syrian refugees and would prevent a potential massacre at the border. “The reality in the Golan Heights, where internal fighting is near the border with Israel, is of great concern to us, including the possibility we might have to deal with refugees from Syria arriving at the border,” Eizenkot told a parliamentary committee, his words conveyed by a spokesman. “We will take measures to prevent a situation where refugees are massacred. Our action would be humanitarian,” he was quoted as saying.

The Palestinian government is considering resigning over its inability to act in the Gaza Strip, with two senior officials telling AFP the move would come within 24 hours. “The government will resign in the next 24 hours because this one is weak and there is no chance that Hamas will allow it to work in Gaza,” said Amin Maqbul, secretary general of the ruling Fatah movement’s Revolutionary Council. The government’s intention was confirmed by another senior Palestinian official who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity. Hamas ruled Gaza for seven years but its administration stepped down last June when the Ramallah-based consensus government was sworn in. Comprised of independent technocrats, the government lineup was agreed by both Fatah and Hamas and was given a mandate to govern both the West Bank and Gaza, ending seven years of separate administrations. But in practice, it has been unable to extend its authority to Gaza, which was devastated by a deadly 50-day war with Israel last summer and where Hamas remains the de facto power. “After the government resigns, we will start consultations to form a new government,” Maqbul told AFP, without saying whether the new lineup would be pieced together in consultation with Hamas.

Headline: Key ISIS commander killed in Lebanon-Syria border clash: report
Hezbollah and the Syrian army clashed with ISIS Tuesday in northern Qalamoun and on the eastern outskirts of a Lebanese border town, killing the group’s leader for the region, Al-Manar said. The Hezbollah-run station said in a news flash that Abu Balqis al-Baghdadi, ISIS’s “emir” for Qalamoun, was killed in shelling that targeted the area of Wadi Hmayed, on the outskirts of Lebanon’s Arsal. Further east, Hezbollah and the Syrian army captured fresh territory from ISIS outside a northern Qalamoun town. Al-Manar said the allied forces took over the areas of Tallet Ras Al-Kosh and Qornat Ras Al-Sahbah on the outskirts of government-held Jarajeer, in an advance that left scores of militants either dead or wounded. The station aired footage in the evening shot on the front line showing Hezbollah fighters taking the new hills. The videos showed the forces using heavy and light machine guns, sniper rifles and mortar shells. The footage included shots taken overnight and at dawn Tuesday when the group launched its offensive against militants located on the two peaks. Hezbollah also targeted ISIS positions on the outskirts of the Lebanese border town of Ras Baalbek, about 7 kilometers north of Arsal, using heavy artillery fire, Al-Manar reported. The attack targeted an area identified as Al-Zuweiteya, the report said.

Headline: ISIS’s Wilayat Sinai Attacks International Base
Recent attacks in Egypt on the one-year anniversary of the fall of Mosul indicate that ISIS’s affiliate in the Sinai may seek to target the Western military forces and the Egyptian state over the course of the next six weeks. ISW assessed that ISIS’s most dangerous course of action during the month of Ramadan would be to attack international forces in Iraq in order to deter U.S.-led coalition involvement in Iraq and Syria. Wilayat Sinai’s attack on the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) airbase at al-Jura on June 9 suggests that ISIS may pursue this operation in the Near Abroad as well, specifically in Egypt over the next 4-6 weeks. In addition the unattributed suicide attack in Luxor on June 10 raises the possibility that Wilayat Sinai may attempt to undermine Egypt’s tourism industry and military in order to pressure and distract the state. This threat is heightened during Ramadan, but also fits within ISIS’s larger strategy to foment disorder and expand operations into the Middle East and North Africa.

A newly-formed coalition of Syrian rebels has launched an offensive in Quneitra in a bid to roll back regime forces in the northern part of the province, which borders Israel. “In response to the [orders] of the almighty, ‘cling to the rope of God and do not disperse’ […] we […] announce the formation of a unified military coalition called Jaysh Hermon,” the insurgents announced Tuesday morning on Twitter. “We promise the nation to work as one hand with pure intention for God until total deliverance from the criminal regime and those who support it.” Following the announcement of its creation, the rebel alliance notched its first victory with the seizure of the Tuloul al-Hamar area, which lies between Quneitra and the southwestern outskirts of Damascus. Rebels have since notched a series of successes in southern Syria, and at the beginning of June, the pro-Damascus newspaper Al-Akhbar reported that the armed opposition would soon launch a massive blitz in the region. The Lebanese daily said that rebels were expected to attack the base of the Syrian army’s 68th Brigade near the town of Khan al-Shih on the Quneitra-Damascus highway, as well the town of Hadar on the foothills of Mount Hermon. Success in the northern Quneitra region would see the rebels move closer to the regime’s defensive positions around Damascus, including the Western Ghouta outskirts of the capital, which are currently being besieged by regime forces.

Syria Headline: Intense rebel shelling of Aleppo kills more than 30: Syria monitor
More than 30 people have been killed in the most lethal rebel bombardment of the city of Aleppo since Syria’s conflict started four years ago, a group monitoring the war said on Tuesday, an attack condemned by a U.N. envoy visiting Damascus. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 34 people were killed, including 12 children, and about 190 were wounded in the bombardment by rebels who are seeking control of the city. State media had said on Monday that at least 23 people were killed. The attack targeted a mosque where children were taking religious lessons as well as other neighborhoods, it said. The Observatory, which tracks the conflict using sources on the ground, said the insurgents fired more than 300 shells on government-held neighborhoods in Aleppo.

Seventeen people were killed in Iraq on Monday in clashes between Islamic State militants and pro-government forces in a town close to the country’s biggest refinery, a focal point in efforts to counter the ultra-hardline Sunni group.Fighting on Monday took place on a road used by Islamic State for supply lines leading from Baiji to the nearby town of Siniya to the west. Militants killed 10 members of Iraq’s security forces in towns in western Anbar Province on Tuesday, police sources said, in attacks highlighting the challenges the U.S.-backed government faces as it tries to slow Islamic State’s advance. Anbar is currently the focus of efforts to stabilize Iraq, where the ultra-hardline group’s control of one-third of the country has exacerbated a sectarian civil war. Islamic State militants fired mortar rounds and rockets towards the town of Amiriyat al-Falluja, killing five policemen and wounding six others, police sources said. In the town of Abu Ghraib, militants attacked a Humvee vehicle, killing a soldier and wounding four more, police sources said. Turkey’s government accused Kurdish forces battling Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists in northern Syria of carrying of “ethnic cleansing” of non-Kurdish populations, media said Tuesday. Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc at briefing late Monday expressed alarm Kurds were trying to bring together three so-called cantons of northern Syria into a single autonomous Kurdish region, according to AFP. Turkey has not shared the satisfaction in Western capitals over the advance by Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) forces against ISIS jihadists to seize the Syrian border town of Tal Abyad. Ankara accuses the YPG – the military wing of the Syrian Democratic Union Party (PYD) – of being the Syrian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has waged a deadly insurgency for decades inside Turkey. Kurdish Headline: Kurds take on Syria regime in Qamishli
Fighting has erupted between Kurdish security forces and regime troops in Qamishli, where the Syrian government maintains one of its last armed bastions in the de-facto autonomous Kurdish Cezire canton. “Clashes have raged since prior to [Monday night] up until now… between Kurdish internal security (Asayesh) on one side and regime troops and militias allied with them on the other side in Qamishli,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Tuesday morning. The monitoring NGO added that the Kurdish security troops had “targeted the area of the [city’s] Allaya Prison and the Eastern Prison, which are controlled by regime forces, with a number of mortar rounds.” Several Iraq-based Kurdish news outlets covered the unusual round of fighting in the Kurdish-populated border town, which was reportedly sparked by the regime’s arrest of a number of Kurdish residents. On Tuesday, ARA News, which focuses on developments in northern Syria, said Qamishli has “witnessed a number of explosions that reverberated throughout the city.”

The presidents of Russia and Turkey have met and discussed a proposal for a pipeline that would carry natural gas from Russia to Turkey.Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan met on Saturday in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on the sidelines of the European games, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies. Peskov gave no specifics of the talks, other than to say they were detailed. Headline: Iraq PM to visit Iran for ‘talks on anti-IS war’
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will travel to Iran on Wednesday for talks on the war against the Islamic State jihadist group, his office said. He will meet with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other Iranian officials to discuss issues including “international efforts to confront (IS) terrorist gangs,” a statement on Abadi’s website said. IS spearheaded an offensive that overran a third of Iraq last year, sweeping Baghdad’s forces aside, and the jihadists proved they are still capable of gaining ground when they overran Anbar provincial capital Ramadi last month. With its forces in disarray last June, Baghdad turned to volunteer forces that are dominated by Iran-backed Shiite militias for support, and they have proved instrumental to Iraqi gains against IS. But the US, which is leading an international coalition carrying out air strikes against IS in Iraq and Syria, is wary of cooperating with some of the militias that fought against its forces in past years.

Headline: Taliban claims attack that killed at least 17 Afghan police officers
An overnight attack on a checkpoint in southern Afghanistan killed at least 17 members of the national police, officials said Saturday. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which began late Friday in Helmand province’s Musa Qala district, long a stronghold of the insurgents. “Antigovernment forces” converged on the checkpoint, said Omar Zwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor, with dozens of fighters participating in an assault that lasted until early Saturday. Zwak said two police officers were also wounded. An Afghan official quoted by the Associated Press in an early report said at least 20 police officers died and the Taliban claimed that 21 died. Musa Qala, in northeast Helmand, has been the site of some of the fiercest fighting of the Afghan conflict between the Taliban and NATO forces, primarily U.S. Marines and British soldiers.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of Defense said the U.S. military conducted a counterterrorism strike against an Al Qaida-associated target in Libya on Saturday night, but were assessing results before providing more details. “The Libyan government in the east of Libya confirms that the U.S fighter jets conducted air strikes last night in a mission which resulted in the death of the terrorist Belmokhtar,” Libya’s recognised government said. However, Al Qaeda and other militants in Libya on Tuesday released a list of names of those they say were killed in a U.S. airstrike over the weekend that does not include the raid’s main target, Al Qaeda-linked commander Mokhtar Belmokhtar.

Three police officers were killed in clashes with Islamist militants at a checkpoint near Sidi Bouzid in central Tunisia, TAP state news agency reported on Monday. Two police officers died in an attack on the checkpoint and another in a later clash. One Islamist fighter was killed and another captured, TAP said. Tunisian forces have stepped up their campaign against jihadist groups since gunmen killed foreign tourists in an attack on the Bardo museum in the capital Tunis in March. No group claimed the Sidi Bouzid attack, but several small brigades of Islamist armed groups are active in Tunisia, including Okba Ibn Nafaa, which operates along the border with Algeria.

Headline: 10 killed in bombing attacks in northeast Nigeria
Two bombing attacks target separate locations in the local government area of Potiskum in Nigeria’s northeastern Yobe State, killing 10 people. An attacker, who had been arrested after being suspected of theft, killed eight vigilantes after detonating his explosives at a civilian vigilante office on Monday. “We suspected he was a thief and then when he couldn’t explain how he came about the things that were found on him, we took him to our office for interrogation,” said one vigilante group member. “But we didn’t know he had explosives on him. He detonated the explosives and we lost eight men, including our commander,” said the vigilante, who asked not to be named for his own safety. The second attacker blew himself up outside a tavern after being chased by an angry mob, who had suspected him of intending a bombing. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the explosions, but Potiskum, the state’s commercial capital, has in the past been repeatedly hit by Nigeria-based Takfiri terrorist group Boko Haram.

Suicide bombers in Ndjamena, the capital of Chad, killed 23 people in what Chadian officials said was a new front for the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram. Bombs exploded Monday at the city’s police headquarters and at a police training academy. Four suicide bombers, on motorcycles, were killed, and 101 people were injured, a statement from the president’s office said, adding that Boko Haram was responsible. The incidents in the capital, a first for Ndjamena, suggest the bombings are retaliation for Chad’s involvement, since January, with neighboring Nigeria in fighting Boko Haram. Chad is one of a five-nation coalition of African nations working collectively to repel the insurgents.

Headline: Roadside bomb blast in Somalia kills at least three
A bomb explosion near Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, has claimed the lives of at least three members of the Somali security forces. Hassan Abdulahi, a Somali security official, said on Tuesday that the bomb attack was carried out on the outskirts of Mogadishu, near the Hawa Abdi area, and targeted a vehicle of the security forces. The official did not specify the number of those killed. However, an eyewitness, Ibrahim Ismail, said the blast left “three soldiers dead and three others wounded seriously.” Officials blamed the al-Shabab militant group for the blast. Meanwhile, an al-Shabab spokesman has reportedly claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Warring Yemeni powers signaled mutual hostility at the start of talks on Tuesday aimed at ending a war that has caused a humanitarian disaster, drawn in regional rivals and threatened the Arabian peninsula country with permanent division. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon opened the Geneva discussions on Monday calling for a humanitarian ceasefire with the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. But with neither side prepared to sit in the same room on the first working day of discussions on Tuesday, there was little sign of that happening. U.N. envoy Ould Cheikh Ahmed began shuttling between rival delegations in “proximity talks”. As the talks began, a Yemeni news agency reported a raid on a school in central Yemen killed four women and a child. “It’s been 80 days of chaos, death and destruction in Yemen,” Robert Mardini, the regional director of the International Committee of the Red Cross for the Near and Middle East told a briefing in Geneva. “Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, there is really little hope for the people of Yemen.”

Al-Qaeda has confirmed that Nasser al-Wuhayshi, the leader of its offshoot in the Arabian Peninsula, has been killed in a US drone strike in Yemen. His death was announced by the AQAP group in an online video. His successor was named as military chief Qasim al-Raymi. Wuhayshi was seen as al-Qaeda’s second-in-command and was a former personal assistant to Osama Bin Laden. He built one of the most active al-Qaeda branches, say US officials.

Congress’ budget office again warned that the U.S. faces a massive debt problem Tuesday, using stark language to describe the government’s long-term mismatch between spending and revenues even as it slightly upgraded its projections for debt over the next 25 years. “The long-term outlook for the federal budget has worsened dramatically over the past several years, in the wake of the 2007-2009 recession and slow recovery,” the Congressional Budget Office reported in its long-term budget outlook for 2015 released Tuesday. The Budget Office, a nonpartisan in-house think tank for Congress, projected that the federal debt is set to rise from 74 percent of economic output today to 103 percent by 2040, driven by spending on government healthcare and retirement programs and interest payments on the debt. The projection issued Tuesday, which is subject to significant uncertainty, is a slight improvement from last year, when the budget office estimated that debt would hit 106 percent by 2039. The outlook has gotten brighter, if only trivially, because financial markets now expect lower interest rates in the future, which will lower the cost of servicing the debt for the Treasury. The budget office warned that debt would still be growing in 2040. It also could be nearly twice as large by 2040 as in the baseline estimate if a more realistic guess about how Congress will act in the years ahead and the economic feedback from higher debt placing a drag on economic growth are taken into account.

Headline: Flesh eating bacteria creates fear on the beaches of Florida- preventive measures released for the beachgoers
State Health Officials reported that seven people was infected due to a deadly bacteria that dwells in the seawater in the beaches of Florida. Along with the seven people, two people are claimed to be dead from this infectious bacteria. The officials are now warning all beach-goers to be be safe and stay alert as this bacteria which is called Vibrio vulnificus can ruin your summer. “People can get infected with Vibrio vulnificus when they eat raw shellfish,” revealed by Florida Health Department spokesperson Mara Burger. “Since it is naturally found in warm marine waters, people with open wounds can be exposed to Vibrio vulnificus through direct contact with seawater.” This bacteria can also be transmitted through having meals, if the meal you are eating has been contaminated with this bacteria then it can instantly show symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

Headline: More than 27,300 infected with Ebola in W. Africa – WHO
Guinea’s 16 cases last week were detected in five of its western districts, half of them from Forecariah district, an area near the border with Sierra Leone that has been a hot spot over the past several weeks. The WHO registered just nine cases in both countries. Fahmy Hanna, who works on mental health with the World Health Organization, says part of the problem is that mental health counselors are so rare in the region. The pattern was similar in Sierra Leone, where 12 new cases were found in the last week of May compared to only three the previous week. However, with continuous increases in Ebola cases, Sierra Leone and Guinea are unlikely to be declared Ebola-free in the coming months, the Agence France Presse reported. Her village, Meliandou, is located near to the Sierra Leone and Liberian borders. Liberia is still Ebola free, but the other two hardest hit countries are experiencing an upsurge. According to The Red Cross, numerous new cases in Guinea have been identified on the border with Sierra Leone. Ebola is not being talked about anymore and many people believe it is completely gone from Africa, but that’s not true.

Five new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome have been confirmed in South Korea and another person has died from the virus, the country’s Ministry of Health said Monday. That brings to 16 the number of deaths attributed to the virus, which is known as MERS. Out of 150 people who contracted MERS since an outbreak began in South Korea last month, 120 are undergoing treatment, the ministry said. South Korean health officials this weekend said the outbreak there was slowing, but additional cases were expected. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has recorded five cases of MERS in the past week, the official state-run Saudi press agency said Sunday, citing a weekly Ministry of Health statement. According to the World Health Organization, the strain of coronavirus that causes MERS was first identified in 2012 in Saudi Arabia.

Headline: Nuclear weapons states upgrade warheads despite disarmament
Nuclear armed states continue to upgrade their stockpiles despite an international trend towards disarmament, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute reported Monday. Between 2010 and 2015 the number of warheads fell from 22,600 to 15,850 according to the institute’s annual disarmament report which said the US and Russia represented the bulk of the reduction. The institute also pointed to “extensive and expensive long-term modernization programmes” in the world’s two largest nuclear powers which account for 90 percent of the weapons. “Despite renewed international interest in prioritizing nuclear disarmament, the modernization programmes under way in the nuclear weapon-possessing states suggests that none of them will give up their nuclear arsenals in the foreseeable future,” SIPRI researcher Shannon Kile said in a statement. The other three nuclear armed states legally recognised by the 1968 Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty — China (260 warheads), France (300 warheads), Britain (215 warheads) — are “either developing or deploying new nuclear weapon systems or have announced their intention to do so” according to the Stockholm-based peace institute.

Headline: Worst drought in century hits North Korea
North Korea is experiencing its worst drought in a century, sparking fears of more severe food shortages in the impoverished country, state-run media says. The North’s main rice-growing provinces have been badly damaged due to the severe drought, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Tuesday. “The worst drought in 100 years continues in the DPRK (North Korea), causing great damage,” it said, adding that the “water level of reservoirs stands at the lowest, while rivers and streams getting dry.” The agency said no rainfall was recorded South and North Hwanghae provinces and more than 30 percent of paddy fields dried up across the country. Average rainfall in vital growing period, between mid-February and late April, fell to only 35 percent of normal seasons in previous years. South Korea’s unification ministry, monitoring the drought in Korean Peninsula, has predicted that the North’s 2015 crop production could fall 20 percent year-on-year.

For portions of rain-battered Texas, the warnings issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday must have seemed like a cruel joke: a tropical storm that is potentially forming in the Gulf of Mexico is headed straight for them. “Through Wednesday, widespread rainfall totals could easily average 6 to 8 inches with some amounts exceeding 10 inches,” read the ominous forecast issued by the weather service office in Houston. “This will obviously lead to a dangerous flood situation.” Local officials sounded even more alarmed, calling the event “possibly catastrophic.” “While high winds and even tornadoes are possible, already wet grounds mean that even a moderate amount of rain will likely cause street flooding,” warned Harris County Emergency Management. “Bayous and rivers could go out of banks quickly creating a serious threat to life and property.”

A volcano near Tokyo erupted early on Tuesday, the latest in a series of volcanic incidents to hit Japan in recent months. Mount Asama, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, is believed to have spewed a small quantity of ash, but Tokyo was not affected, according to Kyodo News. A warning against the dangers of falling rocks within a mile radius of the mountain, which is located 87 miles northwest of the capital, was subsequently issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Experts have been keeping a close eye on the 8,425 feet volcano in recent months, with tremors detected since April and a subsequent surge in sulphur dioxide emissions. June 16, 2015

Headline: Hamas Starts Using Border ‘Attack’ Road
After having paved an attack road along the length of the security barrier in Gaza, Hamas terrorists are now patrolling the road at a negligible distance from IDF border posts in an apparent attempt to create a new security reality and ready the ground for attack. In recent days pictures have surfaced online showing armed Hamas terrorists in uniform conducting patrols in white Toyota 4×4 pick-up trucks along the road, all in broad day light and at a distance of just 300 meters (984 feet) from the border. It is unclear whether the patrols are meant just to show a Hamas presence right on the border, or whether they are also intended for surveillance and gathering information about the IDF array on the border to be used in future attacks. What is clear in the pictures is the direct threat posed by the patrols, as in the background of the pictures IDF posts and the border fence are clearly seen. It would appear that the new patrols are meant to lull the IDF into accepting a new security reality in which Hamas has a presence on the border, and from that new status quo it would be easier for the terrorist organization to launch an attack under the guise of yet another patrol.

Headline: Gaza Salafi group claims responsibility for Thursday rocket attack
A Gaza Strip-based Salafi group affiliated with the Islamic State claimed responsibility Friday for a rocket launched at Israeli territory on Thursday evening. A pamphlet published by the group stated that the attack came in response to “crimes committed by the Jews against members of Sheikh Amer al-Hadid Beit al Maqdis,” the Hebrew-language website NRG reported. The pamphlet also noted the shooting of a Palestinian youth in the Jenin refugee camp on Thursday and Israel’s treatment of members of the fringe group in Israeli jails. The Jenin incident referred to in the pamphlet occurred Wednesday overnight when Border Police forces entered the refugee camp and identified a youth holding an explosive device and preparing to throw it at them. One of the policemen shot the youth and wounded him. Residents of the camp say the youth died of his injuries, an account disputed by the Border Police forces who say he dropped the explosive device after he was wounded by the shot and it detonated on the ground near him, killing him. The rocket attack Thursday evening followed several incidents where one or two projectiles were fired at Israel over the past weeks. The Israeli Air Force did not retaliate for the rocket fired on Thursday night. Initially the IDF said the rocket fell in an open area in southern Israel where sirens had gone off. Later the military said that the projectile fell short and exploded inside the Gaza Strip. There were no reports of injuries.

Headline: Abbas Inaugurates ‘Palestinian Embassy’ in Serbia
Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas inaugurated a Palestinian embassy in the Serbian capital of Belgrade on Thursday, the Ma’an news agency reported. Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic as well as several Arab ambassadors and the PA ambassador to Serbia attended the opening. After the meeting, President Nikolic reportedly announced that Serbia “would like to see Palestine and Israel resume negotiations as soon as possible,” Ma’an reported, citing a Serbian news network. Despite “Palestine” not being a country, several countries in Europe and South America have opened embassies for the PA in recent years. As well, several European countries – such as Britain and Sweden – have passed resolutions recognizing “the state of Palestine”

Subsequent to fierce battles with militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), rebels of the “Army of Islam” took over the strategic mountain of Afaee in the eastern Qalamoun area in Damascus countryside, military sources reported on Thursday. Mount Afaee overlooks strategic areas held by pro-Assad forces, such as “Brigade 559″ of the Third Division, as well as the military airport of Nasiriyah. The battles resulted in the death and injury of dozens among IS ranks. The spokesman of the Army of Islam, Islam Alloush, reported that the Battle of Mount Afaee “represent the beginning of rebels control over the entire eastern Qalamoun, which connects Syria’s north with Damascus. Alloush confirmed that the battle in the eastern Qalamoun aims to clear IS terrorists and pro-Assad forces from the Syrian Desert and open supply lines for rebels from Syria’s north to Daraa in the south.

The Hezbollah-run channel said the allied forces took over the areas of Qirnet Shaab al-Nasoub, Qirnet Abu Harb and Qirnet Semaan on the southern outskirts of government-held Jarajeer, in an advance that left scores of militants either dead or wounded. The Syrian army and Hezbollah also captured Qirnet Shmeis al-Housan, located southwest of the outskirts of Jarajeer. For over a week the Qalamoun battles have been focused on Arsal’s eastern and southern outskirts, and on the western outskirts of the Syrian town of Flita. Flita is located around 23 kilometers southeast of Arsal.

Syria Headline: Syrian rebels say they seize southern air base, state denies
Al-Qaida’s affiliate in Syria has killed at least 20 villagers belonging to the minority Druze sect after a confrontation in northwestern Idlib province. The Druze villagers were killed Wednesday in Qalb Lawzeh village in the Jabal al-Summaq region, where Nusra Front fighters have dug up historic graves and destroyed shrines in recent months. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the shooting occurred after the Nusra Front tried to confiscate the home of a Druze government official in the village. It said the militants shot one villager dead, prompting another to grab one of the Nusra Front men’s rifles and kill a member of the al-Qaida affiliate. The Observatory said the militants later brought reinforcements and opened fire, killing 20 villagers.
Meanwhile, in southern Syria, Western-backed rebels on Thursday entered for the first time the predominantly Druze province of Sweida (Suwayda) , which has been spared Syria’s four-year civil war that has killed more than 220,000 people. Activists said the rebels entered Thursday the Thaala military air base outside the provincial capital, also named Sweida, capturing parts of it from government forces. A Sweida resident told The Associated Press that the city of Sweida was subjected to government shelling on Thursday that killed one person and wounded six. It was not clear if the shells strayed from the fighting around the air base. The resident spoke on condition of anonymity fearing for his own safety.

Syria Headline: Syria Retakes Airbase Following Rebel Advance
Syrian rebels said they had shot down a military jet on Thursday in southern Syria, where insurgents fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad seized a major army base earlier this week. Bashar al-Zoubi, leader of the Yarmouk Army rebel group, told Reuters his fighters had shot down the Russian-built MiG using anti-aircraft guns. A video posted online by the opposition affiliated Syrian Media Organisation appeared to show a jet falling from the sky. Syrian officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, Syrian opposition activists say the government has retaken full control of an airbase in the south that had been seized (yesterday) by a Western-backed rebel group. Southern Front Alliance fighters fled the Al-Thalaa airbase in Sweida province Friday following heavy bombardment by government forces, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Britain-based group did not provide a casualty figure, but the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency said at least 100 of what it called “terrorists” were killed and dozens of armored vehicles destroyed when army units repelled several attacks on the airport.

The Islamic State group is poised to extend its string of military victories in Iraq’s Anbar province by capturing Fallujah, a city less than 50 miles from the capital. If successful, it would put Baghdad squarely in ISIS’ crosshairs. The apparently imminent attack on Fallujah comes as a new group of U.S. military advisers arrive in Anbar province to work with their Iraq counterparts to develop a strategy to defeat ISIS in Anbar. The U.S. advisers are arming and training a new group of Sunni fighters to re-take Ramadi, the capital of Anbar in western Iraq that the militant group seized recently, and to prevent it from capturing Fallujah. Fighters in the area reported Friday from Fallujah that several explosions had killed more than 15 Iraqi Security Forces fighters. The explosions were the latest in a string of ISIS attacks in the last two weeks, marking a dramatic uptick in violence in the area. Earlier this week ISIS claimed responsibility for an attack that killed at least eight people in a local government office and injured more than 17. Iraqi military officials said on social media Friday that the attacks over the last two weeks caused them to retreat from the villages of Mushaniya, Qanatir and Dulaymiya on the northeast side of Fallujah.

Twin bomb attacks killed at least two security forces and injured six others at a military checkpoint in Al-Madaen in the south of Baghdad on Friday, according to a report by Alforat News. Separately, an improvised explosive device went off in the Seyyed Abdullah district in southern Baghdad, claiming the lives of two Iraqi civilians and injuring five other people, according to Iraqi security forces. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks as of now. A total of 1,031 people were killed and another 1,684 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq back in May, according to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Kurdish Headline: Kurds ‘Storm’ ISIS-held Town on Turkish Border
Syrian Kurdish fighters advanced towards the Islamic State (ISIS) group-held town of Tal Abyad on the Turkish border on Thursday, backed by US-led coalition strikes, a monitor said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) forces backed by Arab rebel fighters “stormed the town of Suluk and took control of the eastern part of it,” reports AFP. Fierce clashes continued through the day between ISIS and Kurdish forces. Suluk, in the ISIS bastion province of Raqa in northern Syria, lies to the east of Tal Abyad, a key border town that is controlled by the jihadist group. The town is a key target for the Kurds who want to free up the route between Kobane to the west and Qamishli, further east along the Turkish border. With their advance into Suluk, YPG forces are now some 20 kilometres (12 miles) east of Tal Abyad, and they are also positioned around 10 kilometers to the west. “The Kurds plan to lay siege to Tal Abyad,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said. The YPG has been backed by US-led air strikes targeting ISIS positions in the area, he added. The latest fighting in the area has prompted a wave of several thousand people to flee into neighboring Turkey, which is already hosting 1.8 million Syrians.

Headline: Iran reportedly stepping up shipments of arms, cash to Taliban
The Iranian government reportedly has stepped up shipments of weapons and money to the Taliban in Afghanistan in recent months. According to The Wall Street Journal, which cited Afghan and Western officials in its report, Iran’s motivations for stepping up support for the militants are to prevent ISIS from gaining a foothold in Afghanistan and providing a check on U.S. influence ahead of the planned withdrawal of most American troops by the end of 2016. The report quotes a Taliban fighter as saying that the militants receive weapons from smugglers paid by Iran’s government who traffic the contraband through the remote border region where Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan meet. Among the weapons Taliban units allegedly receive are mortars, machine guns, rifles, and rocket-propelled grenades. Iran has repeatedly denied providing financial or military aid to the Taliban. No Iranian officials immediately commented on the Journal’s report.

The bomb was apparently hidden in a pushcart used by travelers to ferry goods across the frontier. “The bomb killed one person on the spot and another died of his injuries while on his way to hospital,” senior local administration official Daftar Khan told AFP, updating the earlier toll of one killed and six wounded. Khan said one of the five injured was in a serious condition and doctors were struggling to save his life. He added both of the dead were Afghan nationals, whose bodies were later handed over to Afghan authorities at the border crossing.

The former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group in Afghanistan would not be possible without the foreign backing. Karzai also warned that the terror group would threaten neighboring Russia and China if the group gained a strong foothold in the country. In an interview with the Russia Today television network, the former President said the Islamic State (IS), called Daesh in Arabic, is “quiet alien” to Afghanistan. “So, if you hear ever in the coming days, or months, or years that Daesh is on the rise in Afghanistan, and is strong and expanding militarily, it will mean that it is a foreign-backed force intending to destabilize the region, particularly Central Asia, China and Russia,” he added. Karzai put the blame for the rapid expansion of IS on “foreign interference” in Iraq and Syria saying that it was all “the result of events” there. The remarks by Karzai comes as Afghan national security advisor Hanif Atmar has said the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group is looking to have access to drugs market by starting operations in Afghanistan.

Three Middle Eastern men and an Eritrean were arrested by Sudanese authorities on Wednesday night in Port Sudan who described them as being an Islamic State (ISIS) cell, sources told Sudan Tribune. The same sources pointed out that authorities seized explosives that were in possession of the cell adding that its members were swiftly and secretly transferred to Khartoum. The cell was allegedly planning to smuggle ISIS recruits through the Red Sea but no other details were available. ISIS presence in Sudan has made the headlines last March after British media outlets confirmed reports that nine medical students from Sudanese origins entered Syria via Turkey to work in hospitals under the control of ISIS.

The video showed the group’s fighters manning a tank, firing a mortar gun and destroying the planes parked in front of a hangar at the base seized by the militants near the central city of Sirte. The authenticity of the video could not be verified.
Meanwhile, seven people were shot dead on Friday at a protest against Islamic State in the eastern Libyan city of Derna, residents said. Demonstrators, angered at the amount of foreign fighters coming in to join the militant group, started marching toward its main base in the coastal settlement when gunmen opened fire into the crowd, several residents told Reuters. About 30 people were wounded, they added.
At least nine fighters were killed in clashes Friday between Islamic State and another Islamist force in the eastern Libyan city of Derna, a source in one group said. Fighting had first erupted in Derna – a long-time gathering point for jihadis – on Tuesday after a leader in the Islamist umbrella group Majlis al-Shura was killed. At least 20 people were killed.

Tunisia is one of only a few countries which still has a mission in Tripoli, a city which is controlled by a group that has set up its own government, a rival to Libya’s internationally recognized leaders. Tunisian authorities last month arrested Walid Kalib, a member of that rival group, Libya Dawn. On Thursday, a Tunisian court refused to release Kalib who faces kidnapping charges in Tunisia. Libya Dawn, a loose alliance of former rebel brigades and Islamist-leaning groups, seized power in Tripoli last summer, expelling the internationally recognized government to the east.

The Moroccan authorities said on Thursday that they raided an Islamic State (IS) affiliate cell in the central city of Berkane. The interior ministry said in a statement that the seven-member terrorist cell had pledged allegiance to a so-called Caliph at the radical group. “Investigations revealed that the cell members were planning to carry out dangerous terrorist operations in Morocco, including kidnapping and killing people who did not share their ideas, as well as tourists going to the eastern region’s sea resorts,” the ministry added. To reach their aims, the ministry said the cell members underwent intensive paramilitary training in a mountainous region near Berkan in an attempt to attack security agents, and rob them of their weapons. The raid is one of the latest on radical groups that were dismantled by Morocco in the last weeks. Moroccan authorities announced last week that they arrested nine alleged IS recruiters operating in several cities in the North African kingdom.

Hit-and-run attacks and suicide bombings have continued. An alliance of Gulf Arab nations has been bombing Houthi militia and army units loyal to former president Saleh that control much of Yemen since March 26 in what they say is an attempt to restore exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Saudi forces and the Houthis have been trading fire across the border since the Arab alliance began its military operations. On Saturday, the Houthis and their allies fired a Scud missile at Saudi Arabia that the kingdom said it shot down.

Duncan Hunter (R-CA) warned against the passage of the so-called Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) currently being considered by the Congress. Sessions argued it was more than just a framework for a process for the president of the United States to use in negotiating trade agreements, but instead was creating an economic union with wide-ranging powers. “I’ve been there three times and I can tell you it is far more than a trade agreement,” he said. “It is a creating of an economic union. The congressional resource said it is a wide-ranging political and economic partnership that is created where the Sultan of Brunei gets one vote. The president of the United States gets one vote. Twelve countries – they have the ability to add other treaties and pass them. They have the ability to deal with climate issues, wage issues and environmental issues. There’s just no doubt about that.” The junior Alabama senator went on to explain that he felt it was being kept secret because if the public were aware of this union, which he likened to the European Union, it would be stopped dead in its tracks. “I think it’s because if the trade commission – if the international commission, the Pacific union that is being created here – were made public, it wouldn’t go anywhere. I just don’t think it has any chance – look, England found out after they joined the EU they can’t fox hunt anymore.”

President Barack Obama has succeeded in obtaining controversial “fast-track” approval for his Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal in the House of Representatives. The Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), as the “fast-track” powers are officially called, passed by a vote of 219-211, giving President Obama an unlikely victory. In a preceding vote, the House struck down a proposal to extend the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program, providing assistance to workers who would lose jobs as a consequence of trade deals. With both the Senate and the House adopting “fast-track” authorization, Congress will only be able to vote on the finalized agreement, without the opportunity to offer amendments.

The International Monetary Fund suspended its participation in the Greek bailout talks on Thursday (11 June) in a dramatic move that could threaten the conclusion of a deal in the coming days and puts the Greek government in a take-it-or-leave it position. “There are major differences between us in most key areas. There has been no progress in narrowing these differences recently,” an IMF spokesman told reporters in Washington, citing pensions, VAT and financing as the sticking points. “The ball is very much in Greece’s court,” he added. The IMF is, along with the EU and the European central bank (ECB), one of Greece’s three lenders holding the key to the release of a €7.2 billion loan to be agreed before 30 June. Failure to find an agreement on a set of Greek reforms to unblock the loan would leave Greece on the brink of a default.

The global deflation trade is unwinding with a vengeance. Yields on 10-year Bunds blew through 1pc today, spearheading a violent repricing of credit across the world. The scale is starting to match the ‘taper tantrum’ of mid-2013 when the US Federal Reserve issued its first gentle warning that quantitative easing would not last forever, and that the long-feared inflexion point was nearing in the international monetary cycle. Paper losses over the last three months have reached $1.2 trillion. Yields have jumped by 175 basis points in Indonesia, 160 in South Africa, 150 in Turkey, 130 in Mexico, and 80 in Australia. The epicentre is in the eurozone as the “QE” bet goes horribly wrong. Bund yields hit 1.05pc this morning before falling back in wild trading, up 100 basis points since March. French, Italian, and Spanish yields have moved in lockstep. The bond crash has been an accident waiting to happen for months. Money supply aggregates have been surging all this year in Europe and the US, setting a trap for a small army of hedge funds and ‘prop desks’ trying to squeeze a few last drops out of a spent deflation trade. “We we’re too dogmatic,” confessed one bond trader at RBS. Data collected by Gabriel Stein at Oxford Economics shows that ‘narrow’ M1 money in the eurozone has been growing at a rate of 16.2pc (annualized) over the last six months. You do not have to be monetarist expert to see the glaring anomaly. Broader M3 money has been rising at an 8.4pc rate on the same measure, a pace not seen since 2008.

Headline: Gas and food surge sends May prices on a tear
U.S. producer prices in May recorded their biggest increase in more than 2-1/2 years as the cost of gasoline and food rose, suggesting that an oil-driven downward drift in prices was nearing an end. The Labor Department said on Friday its producer price index for final demand increased 0.5 percent last month, the largest gain since September 2012. That followed a 0.4 percent decline in April. Last month, gasoline prices surged 17 percent, the largest increase since August 2009. Food prices rose 0.8 percent in May, the biggest gain in just over a year, snapping five straight months of declines. Higher food prices were driven by a shortage of eggs after an outbreak of bird flu led to the culling of millions of chickens. Wholesale egg prices soared a record 56.4 percent last month. While the spillover from producer prices to consumer prices has weakened, higher gasoline and food prices are likely to feed into the May consumer price index. Israel has been fighting the Iran nuclear deal due to the great danger it poses, but senior Western officials have revealed it is also doing so because once a deal is reached, the European Union (EU) and UN are planning a diplomatic offensive targeting the Jewish state. The political assault is meant to force Israel into returning to yet more peace talks with the Palestinian Authority (PA) and making dangerous concessions in the process – and reportedly the EU already has a list of sanctions ready to force Israel to bend. A senior Western diplomat told Ma’ariv in a report published Tuesday that “a diplomatic attack against Israel is expected soon that will surprise even the pessimists in Jerusalem.” “In the (UN) Security Council, in western capitals and at EU headquarters, they are just waiting for the Iran deal to be signed and for it to be approved by the American Congress,” warned the diplomatic source. It appears that the waiting period will likely expire in September, at which time a UN General Assembly will open in tandem with the first shots of the diplomatic barrage against Israel.

Hezbollah gunmen repelled an attack Tuesday by Islamic State group fighters in an area on the Lebanon-Syria border as a major battle between the two groups looms in the rugged mountainous region, the Lebanese group’s TV station reported. Al-Manar TV said the IS attack targeted several Hezbollah positions outside the northeastern Lebanese border village of Ras Baalbek. The enduing battle left several IS fighters dead or wounded and three vehicles, including a bulldozer, destroyed, the channel said. It did not say whether there were casualties among Hezbollah fighters. Hezbollah has been on the offensive in Syria’s Qalamoun mountains for weeks and has captured territory from al-Qaida’s branch in Syria, the Nusra Front. With the Nusra Front almost defeated in the area, a major battle is expected between Hezbollah and IS.

ISIS initiated a battle Tuesday after attacking Hezbollah posts on Lebanon’s northeastern border, but the party will finish it, Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah vowed Wednesday. “The battle with ISIS in Qalamoun has started,” the Hezbollah chief declared in a televised speech. “They (ISIS) started the battle. No problem. We will finish it,” Nasrallah added. “Yesterday’s (Tuesday’s) attacks hit several targets, but Hezbollah fighters were brave in their response and scored several casualties and destroyed a lot of their vehicles.” “The resistance also suffered casualties during this battle,” he said, honoring those who died. “We will continue [with the battle] until all terrorists are uprooted. We confirm that we will not let any terrorist remain on the outskirts.” ISIS militants launched surprise attacks on four Hezbollah posts early Tuesday on the outskirts of the northeastern town of Ras Baalbek, sparking the deadliest clashes on the border with Syria since the start of the Qalamoun offensive last month. Sinai Province, Islamic State’s Egypt affiliate, fired rockets late Tuesday at the direction of an airport in the Sinai peninsula used by UN peacekeeping forces, security sources said, adding that there were no casualties reported. The group claimed responsibility for the attack on several Twitter accounts linked to it. Details of the attack, however, could not be immediately confirmed with some security sources saying the rockets fell inside the airport and others saying they fell outside. Egypt’s government faces an Islamist insurgency based in Sinai and growing discontent with what critics perceive as heavy-handed security tactics. Tweets from Twitter accounts linked to Sinai Province claimed responsibility for the attack on Tuesday night, saying it came in response to the police arresting a local woman. Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, Egypt’s most active militant group, changed its name to Sinai Province last year after swearing allegiance to Islamic State, the hardline Sunni militant group that has seized swaths of Iraq and Syria, drawing U.S.-led airstrikes.

A suicide bomber blew himself up on Wednesday just steps away from the ancient Egyptian temple of Karnak in Luxor, a southern city visited by millions of tourists every year, security and health officials said. No tourists were killed or hurt in the late morning attack. The attack — the second this month at or near a major tourist attraction in Egypt — marks an escalation and a shift in tactics in a campaign of violence waged by Islamic militants against the government of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. Shortly after Wednesday’s explosion, police exchanged fire with and killed two suspected Islamic militants who had arrived at the sprawling, Nile-side temple together with the suicide bomber, the security officials said. Four people, including two policemen, were wounded in the exchange, according to the Health Ministry in Cairo. The governor of Luxor, Mohammed Sayed Badr, said no tourists were hurt in the bombing outside the famed Luxor site. Speaking to The Associated Press over the phone, he said the attack was “an attempt to break into the temple of Karnak.” “They didn’t make it in,” he added of the attackers.

Syria Headline: Rebels Attack Major Syrian Army Base
Syrian rebels attacked a major army base in the south of the country on Tuesday, seeking to increase pressure on President Bashar al-Assad after his recent losses elsewhere in Syria. The southern region near the border with Jordan and Israel is one of the areas where insurgents have inflicted significant defeats on Assad in the last three months, notably the capture of the Nasib border crossing with Jordan April 1. Important due to its proximity to Damascus, the area is one of the last major strongholds of mainstream rebels who have been seen losses elsewhere in Syria by jihadist groups including Islamic State group and the Nusra Front, al-Qaida’s Syrian arm. The offensive is targeting a base known as “The 52nd Brigade” northeast of the city of Deraa. Previous insurgent attempts to seize it have failed, Reuters reported. “It is very important because it is the second biggest base the regime has [in the south],” said Saber Safar, a former army colonel whose “First Army” rebel group said it had launched the attack. Jihadists from the Islamic State group blew up a pipeline feeding natural gas from eastern Syria to the suburbs of the capital Damascus early Wednesday morning, a monitor said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said ISIS blew up the pipeline near the T-4 military airport in the east of central Homs province shortly after midnight. “This pipeline was used to carry gas into the suburbs of Damascus and Homs to generate electricity and provide heating in individual homes,” said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman. ISIS has seized a number of oil and gas fields in Homs province, most recently during its offensive on the ancient city of Palmyra. These fields were key to Syria’s embattled regime, which relied on them for power generation in its dwindling areas of control. “Any hit to the regime’s gas supply is important, because its resources are very low,” Abdel Rahman told AFP.

Three militants disguised in military uniform killed at least eight people in a local government office in Amiriyat al-Falluja in western Iraq on Tuesday, in an attack claimed by Islamic State. One of the attackers blew himself up inside the building, but the other two were still at large, according to deputy district council chairman Falih al-Issawi, who said he could still hear gunfire. A further 17 people were wounded in the attack, including the head of the council, Shakir al-Issawi, who leapt from the window of his office after the explosion, a police source said. In a statement, Islamic State said the three attackers had killed “dozens of apostates.” Located on the western fringe of Baghdad, Amiriyat al-Falluja is one of the few remaining pockets of territory under government control in Anbar province, most of which is held by Islamic State.

The plan would expand the 3,100-strong U.S. contingent of trainers and advisers in Iraq and would mark an adjustment in strategy for President Barack Obama, who is facing mounting criticism for not being tougher in combating Islamic State. U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed hope that even a modestly strengthened U.S. presence could help Iraqi forces plan and carry out a counter-attack to retake Anbar’s capital Ramadi, which insurgents seized last month. However, Obama was expected to stick to his stance against sending U.S. troops into combat or even close to the front lines, officials said. Obama said on Monday the United States did not yet have a complete strategy for training Iraqi security forces to regain land lost to Islamic State fighters, who have seized a third of Iraq over the past year in a campaign marked by mass killings and beheadings.

Bomb attacks killed eight people in and around Baghdad on Wednesday as U.S.-led coalition warplanes targeted Islamic State insurgents west of the capital, police and medics said. A suicide bomber in a car killed five civilians in the Shula neighbourhood and wounded 15 other people, they said. Hours earlier, a roadside bomb exploded on a commercial street in al-Mahmoudiya district just south of the capital, killing three civilians and wounding seven. Iraq is facing multiple security challenges, including Islamic State militants who have seized large parts of the north and west of the country, an oil producer and OPEC member. The country is also gripped by a sectarian conflict mostly between Shi’ites and Sunnis that has been exacerbated by the rise of the ultra-hardline Sunni militants of Islamic State. U.S.-led coalition warplanes killed four Islamic State insurgents north of the city of Falluja, which is held by the group. The Isis militant group has seized enough radioactive material from government facilities to suggest it has the capacity to build a large and devastating “dirty” bomb, according to Australian intelligence reports. Isis declared its ambition to develop weapons of mass destruction in the most recent edition of its propaganda magazine Dabiq, and Indian defence officials have previously warned of the possibility the militants could acquire a nuclear weapon from Pakistan. According to the Australian foreign minister, Julie Bishop, Nato has expressed deep concerns about the materials seized by Isis from research centres and hospitals that would normally only be available to governments. The threat of Isis’s radioactive and biological weapons stockpile was so severe that the Australia Group, a 40-nation bloc dedicated to ending the use of chemical weapons, held a session on the subject at its summit in Perth last week.

Headline: Three dead after attack on aid group leader in southeast Turkey
Three people were killed in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast on Tuesday after an Islamic aid group leader was shot, touching off a violent clash, security sources said, two days after a historic election success for Kurds. The motive for the killings was not immediately clear, although there have been sporadic clashes in the southeast in recent years between Islamists and supporters of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP). Security sources confirmed that Aytac Baran, a leader of the Yeni Ihya Der aid group, was shot dead as he left his office in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir. Two more people were killed in a clash that followed, the security sources said. They had initially said three people died in the clashes. Three people, one with a pistol, who were believed to be connected with the armed attack were subsequently detained by police, the interior ministry said in a statement. Yeni Ihya Der is linked to the Islamist political party Huda Par, which draws support from sympathizers of Hizbullah, a militant group active in the 1990s.

Headline: Turkish PM Resigns After Election Disappointment
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu resigned on Tuesday, in a procedural move after his AK Party lost its majority in parliamentary elections earlier this week. According to the BBC, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accepted Davutoglu’s gesture but asked him to stay in the post until a new government was formed. Erdogan is expected to give Davutoglu the difficult task of forming a new coalition government, the report added. The two men met on Tuesday in the capital, Ankara, to discuss the future of the government after the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party lost its majority in parliament for the first time in 13 years. It secured 41%, a sharp drop from 2011, and is now likely to try to form a coalition, although no party has yet indicated it is willing to join forces with the AKP. In accepting Davutoglu’s resignation, Erdogan expressed his thanks for his services and asked him to continue to serve until a new government was established, according to a statement posted on the president’s website.

The Pentagon says an American civilian was killed and another injured when suspected Taliban militants lobbed a rocket at the largest US military base in Afghanistan. The United States Department of Defense, in a statement released on Wednesday, said 54-year-old Krissie K. Davis died Monday while working for a Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) team at Bagram airfield, located 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) southeast of Charikar in Afghanistan’s central province of Parwan. The projectile struck the victims’ car. Kenneth MacNevin, a spokesman for the DLA, says Davis was the first civilian member of the unit killed in Afghanistan. The DLA team is engaged in the destruction, sale or other removal of excess US equipment and supplies in Afghanistan.

Iran has told the U.N. Security Council that Saudi-led airstrikes have twice hit close to its embassy in Yemen and warned of “serious consequences” if more such bombings occur. Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo said in a letter released Tuesday that the embassy in Sanaa suffered severe damage during airstrikes on May 25 and that this followed a similar attack on April 20. “I would like to warn that a repetition of similar air strikes close to my country’s diplomatic representation in the future can have serious consequences, including for the safety and security of Iranian diplomats in Sanaa,” Khoshroo wrote in the letter to the 15-member council.

The stock market has an empirical rule: interest rates lead stocks. And the current interest rate environment is pointing to a massive decline for the U.S. market. Consider: The Federal Reserve has taken rates to the lowest level in more than a generation. This has energized stock prices. The Fed has persisted in its directive to “stay the course,” having made no raises in the discount rate for more than seven years. Such monetary policy has no precedent; this is the longest stretch of accommodation by the Fed in the post-World War II era. But there’s Fed-induced rates, and “actual” rates. The most widely followed Treasury markets are the longer-term 10-year TMUBMUSD10Y, +0.82% and 30-year TMUBMUSD30Y, +0.66% markets. These two markets are highly sensitive to longer-term actual interest-rate pressures. For example, banks use longer-term Treasurys to make decisions on pegging personal loan rates to clients for mortgages, businesses, and other uses. The commercial and industrial areas of the economy also are susceptible to the actual cost of money. A winning bid of $2.3 million was made in Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett’s annual auction where the winner lunches with the Oracle of Omaha. Are there parallels to this current market environment? Yes — 1987. The summer that year began with a slow, methodical rise in actual rates. Yet the Fed did not raise the discount rate, even though actual rates suggested otherwise. The fall of 1987 arrived with the stock market having hit an all-time high in late August, unfazed by this unsettled condition. As it happened, the Federal Reserve was literally forced to raise interest rates. Policymakers were behind the curve severely, just as the Fed is now. Nearly 50 Southern Indiana students exposed to a classmate with a confirmed case of tuberculosis have tested positive for the disease in preliminary tests, health officials said. Clark County Health Department administrator Mike Meyer said Friday that the 48 positive skin tests for the bacterial disease don’t mean those students have diagnosed TB cases. He said the students at Rock Creek Community Academy in Sellersburg will undergo chest X-rays and possibly other tests to determine whether they indeed have the illness. Because about 300 Rock Creek students have not been tested, another round of skin testing will be held Monday, with those results expected Wednesday, Meyer said. Rock Creek Community Academy Principal Sara Hauselman said officials at the school, a few miles north of Louisville, Ky., are working with the health department. Because tuberculosis is so uncommon in the United States, they’re trying to figure out the best course of action.

Colorado is full of all-inclusive ranch resorts where guests hike, fish, play horseshoes and roast marshmallows. This one has a new offering — smoking pot. The 170-acre CannaCamp opening July 1 in Durango in southwest Colorado calls itself the nation’s first cannabis-friendly ranch resort. Guests won’t be given marijuana, because that violates state law. Instead, the resort allows guests to bring their own pot and use it while at the resort. In addition to horseshoes and hiking, guests are offered yoga sessions and workshops on marijuana cultivation. “We’re bringing an element of luxury to that adventurous, exploratory vibe of childhood summer camp —in a beautiful setting where visitors can enjoy marijuana in a safe, comfortable, social environment,” Joel Schneider, head of the management group opening CannaCamp, said in a statement. Guests stay in cabins that allow smoking on porches but not inside. Rates start at $395 per person per night.

Leila Zerrougui’s rights expertise includes eight years (2000-2008) as legal advisor to Algeria’s President-for-life Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Moreover, in the coming weeks, the U.N. will issue another report on Israel’s “criminal” response to Hamas genocidaires in Gaza, commissioned by UN Human Rights Council authorities like Russia, China and Saudi Arabia. Headline: China demands workers sent to Israel not be placed in West Bank settlements
Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon’s plan to bring Chinese construction workers to Israel in order to accelerate the pace of residential building in Israel has hit a diplomatic snag, in the form of Beijing’s demand that the workers not be employed in West Bank Jewish settlements, purportedly out of concern for their safety. China’s demand is holding up the implementation of a cabinet resolution from about a year ago that provided for a boost in the number of foreign construction workers, initially to 8,000 and later to 15,000, as part of a plan to increase the housing supply and in consequence to decrease home prices. Even the 8,000 figure has not been reached, rendering the program meaningless in effect for now. The Chinese and Israeli governments have negotiated over the employment of Chinese workers in Israel for a number of years. The agreement would replace the current arrangement, in which private companies contract directly with Chinese firms that supply the labor, an arrangement that has resulted in allegations of serious violations of labor laws.

The Supreme Court struck down a disputed law Monday that would have allowed Americans born in Jerusalem to list their birthplace as Israel on their U.S. passports in an important ruling that underscores the president’s authority in foreign affairs. The court ruled 6-3 that Congress overstepped its bounds when it approved the law in 2002. It would have forced the State Department to alter its long-standing policy of not listing Israel as the birthplace for Jerusalem-born Americans and listing only “Jerusalem.” The policy is part of the government’s refusal to recognize any nation’s sovereignty over Jerusalem, until Israelis and Palestinians resolve its status through negotiations. Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his majority opinion that the president has the exclusive power to recognize foreign nations, and that the power to determine what a passport says is part of this power.

Hezbollah’s death toll in the battle against jihadis on Lebanon’s eastern borders has risen to at least 29, with three fighters dying Friday as the group advanced further into Arsal’s outskirts. Government airstrikes on a northwestern Syrian village Monday killed at least 49 people and destroyed homes, shops and cars, activists said. The Local Coordination Committees said two air raids on the village of Janoudiyeh in Idlib province killed 60 people and wounded others. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the air raid killed 49 people, including six children. It said the death toll could rise as some people are still missing. Conflicting reports often emerge in the chaotic aftermath of such events. The Observatory said the air raid struck a public square in Janoudiyeh, near the town of Jisr al-Shughour, which was captured by insurgents in April. It said the village has become home to many displaced people from nearby areas. The officer said 37 people were also wounded in the explosion. Khidhr Muslim Abed, a member of the Diyala provincial council, confirmed the toll. The leader of Al Qaeda in Syria has predicted a Kurdish uprising in Iran, while renouncing intentions to drag the United States further into conflict in Iraq and Syria. Abu Muhammed al-Joulani gave an interview with Al Jazeera Arabic on June 3 in which he made the announcements. While it had been the strategy of Al Qaeda to drag the US into war in Afghanistan and Iraq last decade, the Nusra Front, Al Qaeda’s Syrian arm has no wishes to do so currently in Iraq and Syria. “That’s not what we are striving to do,” Joulani said. “We will make do with chopping off Iran’s hands and arms in the region. If more than this is necessary, we will transfer the battle.” Joulani claimed that “Iran is sitting on a volcano that is about to erupt” given the situation with its minority ethnicities. “It has eight million Kurds, who have been marginalized, as well as the marginalized Ahwazi Arabs. In Baluchistan, there are [Sunni] tribes, which are divided.” He also asserted that Iran has more than 20 million Sunni Muslims.The Jihadist leader cited recent protests in Ahwaz and Kurdistan, claiming they could spread to other areas. “If there is instability in the areas mentioned, Iran will automatically fall back to its domestic affairs,” he concluded.

South Sudan’s rebels said they had taken control of oilfields in a northern state after fighting government troops, adding their aim was to capture and shut down all the oilfields in the country. A military spokesman meanwhile said the government was in control of the Unity State in the north, but that fighting continued. Forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and rebels allied with former vice president Riek Machar have been fighting for nearly 18 months in the world’s newest state, which seceded from Sudan in 2011. Ceasefires have been agreed but broken. Rebel SPLA-In-Opposition spokesman James Gatdet Dak said in a statement late on Friday that the group’s soldiers had taken control of Unity oilfields. Production in the oilfield stopped after fighting erupted in December 2013. “In response to the government’s ongoing full-scale offensive against our positions, all the oilfields in South Sudan are our targets with the aim to capture and shut down their operations,” he said.

Members of the Islamic State (IS) have their sights set on gaining full control of an area known as Libya’s oil crescent, according to residents in the Libyan town which has become IS’s latest conquest. At a meeting with leaders from Harawa, IS militants said they were not interested in the town itself but needed it under their control as part of a planned takeover of the country’s central oil facilities, a senior resident of the town told Middle East Eye. Wary of the strong resistance Harawa had put up against its expansion in the region, IS negotiated an agreement with the tribal elders before entering the town and raising the flag above public buildings on Friday. “In the negotiations IS said that before Ramadan they would enter the oil crescent,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Although locals had previously warned Libya’s rival governing institutions that the militant group was targeting the area for its oil, this was the first time IS had spoken of their plans, he said. IS already has full control over the desert town of Nufaliya, just 50 kilometres from Libya’s largest oil export terminal of Es-Sidra, and controls much of Muammar Qaddafi’s former hometown of Sirte. Now having taken Harawa – strategically positioned between Sirte and Sidra in the centre of Libya’s coastal highway – it has secured a route to the oil crescent.

Islamic State (ISIS) has conquered large parts of Syria and Iraq and set up ‘branches’ as far away as Libya and the Sinai Desert – but now, it has set its sights on Algeria. Months after successfully conquering the Libyan coastal city of Sirte, Algerian authorities say that ISIS has attempted to expand westward to conquer the largely-desert border region between the two countries. On Thursday, the Algerian army raised its alert level to the highest level and has drafted some 50,000 troops to ward off ISIS ahead of an anticipated invasion; authorities cited the Libyan army’s inability to defend its Western borders and Sirte’s downfall. An anonymous source told Turkey’s Andalou News agency that “the Algerian army received strict orders to shoot immediately in the event of any attempt to infiltrate into the Algerian territory.”

The North African wing of al-Qaeda has claimed two attacks on Algerian military and security forces in the east of the country that killed at least five people, the U.S.-based SITE jihadi monitoring service said Sunday. Attacks are rarer in Algeria since the end of its civil war with Islamist militants in the 1990s. But al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is still active, and another splinter group has pledged allegiance to ISIS. SITE said AQIM claimed responsibility on a social media account for a roadside bomb that killed an Algerian army colonel and wounded two others last week, and an attack that killed four members of a local neighborhood watch brigade. The attacks took place near Batna, 500 km (300 miles) east of Algiers. Pakistan’s military says seven Pakistani soldiers and 19 terrorists were killed in overnight intense clashes in a tribal region bordering Afghanistan. The military said Monday the firefight took place in an “uncleared pocket” along the border in the North Waziristan tribal territory. “When being chased and cordoned, one terrorist exploded his suicide jacket,” a Pakistan military spokesperson said. Pakistani security forces have been conducting ground and air operations in the Waziristan region since June, 2014 to clear it of local and foreign militants. The area has long served as a safe haven for local and foreign militants.

A series of Saudi-led airstrikes Sunday morning targeted the headquarters of Yemen’s armed forces in the rebel-held capital, killing at least 22 people, security and hospital officials said. Residents said the armed forces’ headquarters was struck by at least three airstrikes. Sunday’s airstrikes come one day after the Houthis fired a Scud missile into Saudi Arabia, a dramatic escalation of the conflict. The attack indicated that despite more than two months of airstrikes the rebels still pose a threat to cities inside Saudi Arabia. The official Saudi Press Agency said two missiles launched from a Patriot missile battery shot down the Scud before dawn near the southwestern city of Khamis Mushait. Headline: US Officials Consider Nuclear Strikes against Russia
US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter is meeting today at the headquarters of the US European Command in Stuttgart, Germany with two dozen US military commanders and European diplomats to discuss how to escalate their economic and military campaign against Russia. They will assess the impact of current economic sanctions, as well as NATO’s strategy of exploiting the crisis in eastern Ukraine to deploy ever-greater numbers of troops and military equipment to Eastern Europe, threatening Russia with war. A US defense official told Reuters that the main purpose of the meeting was to “assess and strategize on how the United States and key allies should think about heightened tensions with Russia over the past year.” The official also said Carter was open to providing the Ukrainian regime with lethal weapons, a proposal which had been put forward earlier in the year. Most provocatively, a report published by the Associated Press yesterday reports that the Pentagon has been actively considering the use of nuclear missiles against military targets inside Russia, in response to what it alleges are violations of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty. Russia denies US claims that it has violated the INF by flight-testing ground-launched cruise missiles with a prohibited range.

Netflix has just launched an exclusive new series called “Sense8” written by the Wachowskis. As I’m a Netflix subscriber (or at least I was before this), I thought I’d check out the series because I’m a fan of The Matrix, also written by the Wachowskis. (WARNING: GRAPHIC images to follow…) Sense8 is nothing like The Matrix. It’s an in-your-face assault on the senses and an aggressive pushing of suicide violence, emasculated males and anti-Christian symbolism interwoven with LGBT symbols peppered throughout the episode. I don’t often comment on movies and TV programming, but this series seemed so over-the-top that I decided to ask Natural News readers for your opinions on the show.
