Headline: Hezbollah captures Syrian village from Islamic militants

Hezbollah’s leader said on Tuesday his Lebanon-based militant group will launch an attack inside Syria against al Qaeda-linked insurgents in the mountain region along the countries’ border. Local media and Syrian opposition have speculated that such an assault could start within days in the Qalamoun area, and Hezbollah fighters clashed with gunmen from the same Syria-based insurgent group, Nusra Front, in a different border zone on Tuesday. The attack “will announce itself when it happens,” Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised speech. It would be in Qalamoun, but “as for its goal, place or where it will extend to.. This …we do not declare now.”

Headline:  Over 120 die in Yemen as Houthis take key Aden district

Yemen’s Houthi militia battled its way into Aden’s Tawahi district on Wednesday despite Saudi-led air strikes, strengthening its hold on the city whose fate is seen as crucial to determining the country’s civil war. The fighting across Yemen killed 120 people on Wednesday, mostly civilians, including at least 40 who were trying to flee the southern port city of Aden by a boat that was struck by Houthi shells, rescue workers and witnesses said. Hadi’s Foreign Minister Reyad Yassin Abdulla appealed for the international community to intervene to stop the Houthi assault on Aden in a televised news conference from Riyadh. Insisting that the city had not fallen, he described the militia as “the killers of men and children” and said Aden’s residents had appealed to Saudi Arabia for help “in the name of the brotherhood of blood and religion”. Locals said the Houthis had penetrated the historic district of al-Tawahi, where the presidential palace, main port and Aden television station are located. Fighting still raged, they said. Meanwhile, in Yemen’s far north, coalition airstrikes killed 43 civilians, Houthi sources said, following the death of five Saudi civilians on Tuesday in mortar and rocket fire, the first such deaths in the kingdom since the campaign began on March 26. More than 30 airstrikes hit Saada province and there was heavy artillery fire from across the border, local sources said. The figure could not be independently verified.

Shells fired from Yemen killed five people in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday in a second day of cross-border bombing blamed on Houthi rebels, civil defense authorities said. Two civilians in a car and two passers-by were killed by a shell in the city of Najran, while 11 others were wounded, the civil defense department said in a statement carried by the SPA state news agency. A prison security officer was also killed and another wounded when a second shell landed on their patrol in the same area, the statement said.

Syria Headline:   ISIS attack on Kurdish forces in Syria kills 16: activists

At least 16 members of the Syrian Kurdish security forces were killed Wednesday in an ISIS attack on a base in the northeastern province of Hassakeh, activists said. “There was a large explosion at dawn today in Hassakeh city caused by an ISIS car bomb attack on a base belonging to the Kurdish internal security forces,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Britain-based group said ISIS militants opened fire on Kurdish forces after the blast, prompting fierce clashes. All the attackers were killed, the Observatory said, without specifying the number of ISIS fighters involved in the assault in the provincial capital, where Kurdish and regime forces share control.

Syria Headline:   Rebels make gains against ISIS, launch attack north of Homs

Syrian rebel and jihadi militias launched a new offensive in central Homs province Tuesday and seized a town from ISIS near the border with Israel, observers and anti-regime activists said. Seven groups, including the powerful Ahrar al-Sham militia and the Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, said they would target regime-held areas in the north of the city of Homs. The move comes after recent gains by rebels in Idlib province to the north have seen them approach staunchly pro-regime areas of western Hama province. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, said 10 rebels and eight regime troops were killed in the clashes, which saw the rebels move closer to the villages of Jabbourine and Umm Sharshouh. Airstrikes pounded the area as the clashes took place and killed four civilians in the town of Talbiseh, the center of the rebel-held pocket in the middle of the country.

Iraq Headline: Iraqi forces repel IS attack in Salahudin province

The Iraqi security forces on Wednesday repelled an attack by the Islamic State (IS) militants on an oil field in Salahudin province, while battles continued with the extremist militants in Iraq’s largest refinery of Baiji, a provincial security source said. The IS militants attacked the oil field of Allas in east of the provincial capital city of Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad, sparking fierce clashes with the Iraqi security forces and allied militias, known as Hashd Shaabi, or Popular Mobilization, who fought back the attackers, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. After hours of heavy clashes the IS militants failed to seize the oil field but managed to impose a siege on the headquarters of a military brigade in the area, while reinforcement troops from the security forces and allied militias were dispatched to the scene, the source said. So far, the clashes resulted in the wounding of five militiamen, including an officer, and the destruction of two Humvees, the source said, citing initial reports.

Iraq Headline: ISIS attacks oil tanker in Diyala

Islamic State fighters on the Khanaqin-Naftkhana road in northern Diyalah province successfully attacked an oil tanker and killed three of its drivers, local authorities told Rudaw.
A fourth driver managed to escape. “A group of ISIS militants opened fire on the oil tanker, killing three people in it, and then they set fire to the tanker. One of the drivers managed to escape from the militants,” Mohammed Mullah Hussain, the Khanaqin mayor, told Rudaw Wednesday. He added security forces had interviewed the fourth driver. The shooting occurred near an Iraqi army base. The tanker attack follows claims made Tuesday by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense that the national army had seized control of an Islamic State base believed to be the jihadis’ largest in Diyala province.

Headline:  Purported ISIS warning claims terror cells in place in 15 states

A grim online warning from a self-described American jihadist said Sunday’s terror attack in Texas was the work of ISIS and that the terrorist group has scores of “trained soldiers” positioned in 15 states, awaiting orders to carry out more operations. The warning, which was posted on a file-sharing site, could not be verified, but was signed by Abu Ibrahim Al Ameriki. That name matches the moniker of a shadowy American known to have joined a terrorist group in Pakistan several years ago and who has appeared in propaganda videos before. The chilling threat named five of the states where it is claimed that ISIS has terror cells in place. “Out of the 71 trained soldiers 23 have signed up for missions like Sunday, we are increasing in number,” read the warning. “Of the 15 states, 5 we will name… Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, California, and Michigan.” Sources told Fox News the U.S. intelligence community was assessing the threat and trying to determine if the source is directly related to ISIS leadership or an opportunist such as a low-level militant seeking to further capitalize on the Garland incident.

Five Ukrainian soldiers were killed, the Ukrainian government reported Wednesday, shaking a three-month truce in the eastern part of the country. While relatively calm since February, when a truce went into effect, monitors from the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe reported over 550 explosions last week of mortar and heavy artillery in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where pro-Russian separatists are fighting Ukrainian troops. Tuesday night over 40 artillery explosions were counted, the news agency Ukrinform reported. In addition to those killed, twelve service members were injured last week, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council reported.

Headline:  Iran Claims it Chased US Warship in Gulf of Aden

The Iranian navy is claiming to have chased off a US warship and several American aircraft, in the latest aggressive move by the Islamic Republic’s military. According to the semi-official Fars News Agency, 2 US reconnaissance planes and US Navy destroyer DDG81 “rapidly changed direction” on Monday, after being confronted by an Iranian fleet in the Gulf of Aden, south of Yemen. The Iranian Destroyer “Alborz”, part of Iran’s 34th fleet, sent a warning to the US vessels telling them to turn around after the Americans strayed into the “5-mile standard distance” from the Iranian fleet, Fars claimed. “Checking foreign warships in the international waters and surveilling potential threats to Iran’s national interests is our essential responsibility,” the commander of the 34th flotilla of warships, Commodore Mostafa Tajeddini, said on Tuesday. The Iranian 34th fleet is conducting an “anti-piracy” patrol off the coast of Yemen, according to Tehran. But the US and others claim Iran is using its military assets in the region to back Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen, and the US Navy has been deployed off the coast of the war-torn country to prevent the transfer of weapons from Iran to the Houthis.

Headline:   Sudan Claims it Shot Down Israeli Drone

The Sudanese army claimed it shot down an Israeli drone, after Arab media reported on Wednesday that Israeli war planes struck sites around the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, destroying weapons sites apparently destined for Hamas terrorists in Gaza. The London-based Arabic-language Al-Araby Al-Jadeed and other Arab news sources reported the strikes, saying they hit a factory producing long-range Scud missiles, a rocket storage site, as well as a convoy that was leaving the military site in Omdurman to the north of Khartoum. Witnesses reported hearing explosions and secondary explosions, apparently from the weapons detonating in the strike. There are no clear indications regarding the scope of the damage and whether there are any dead. The report claimed that foreign jets were behind the incident and indicated Israel had conducted the strike, although no official sources in Sudan or outside of it gave confirmation to the appraisal in the report. However, a spokesperson for the Sudanese army denied that military sites were hit in airstrikes, with military sources saying a flying object resembling a plane or rocket was shot at by an anti-aircraft unit in the area, according to the Lebanese paper Charles Ayoub. Later on Wednesday the Sudanese army claimed it had shot down an Israeli drone. The Lebanese Al Meyadeen, considered to be close to the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization, reported that the Sudanese army had announced shooting down an Israeli drone in the region of Wadi Seidna, to the north of Khartoum. Wadi Seidna houses an army airbase. Sudan has been a key route for smuggling weapons originating in Iran and destined for Hamas in Gaza. Israel has not yet responded to the report.

Army spokesman Victor Masandi said Monday that the clashes broke out overnight Sunday when the rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces-National Army for the Liberation of Uganda (ADF-NALU) attacked an army post in the village of Kokola, around 40 kilometers north of the city of Beni. He added that 16 rebels, four soldiers and a civilian were killed in the fighting. The rebel group killed some 20 people in North Kivu Province in a mid-April assault. Military sources and a local official told AFP that the fighting occurred at about 5:00 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) Tuesday between the army troops and the rebels of the CMA, the French acronym for the Coordination of Azawad Movements. “Currently we are under fire from CMA rebel groups and the army,” said a local councilor. The CMA, comprising ethnic Arabs and Tuaregs, claims to be in control of the central market town, but both the councilor and the army have denied it. A military source said, “The rebels have no control whatsoever over Tenenkou. It’s just bluster.” The recent fighting between the rebel groups and government forces erupted in the northern region in late April.

Headline: Macedonia clashes leave dozens wounded

Violent clashes between demonstrators and police in the Macedonian capital city of Skopje have left dozens injured. Authorities said on Wednesday that overnight fighting left 38 police officers and one protester wounded, while 30 people were arrested. Macedonia’s Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska said six of the officers sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. She described the clashes as “a brutal attack on the police,” saying the protesters threw eggs, stones as well as bottles and used metal bars. Late Tuesday, over 1,000 people gathered in front of the government building in Skopje to voice their anger at the alleged government cover-up in the case of the death of 22-year-old Martin Neskoski. Neskoski died after he was beaten by police during the country’s post-election celebrations in 2011. A police officer was later convicted of his murder and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Tuesday’s clashes erupted hours after Zoran Zaev, Macedonia’s opposition leader, accused Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski of attempting to cover up Neskoski’s death.

Headline: Greece introduces cashpoint tax in desperate bid to raise revenue and stop run on banks as country teeters on brink of bankruptcy

Headline: Greece blames EU and IMF for ‘obstacles’ in talks

Greece has revealed it is to introduce a surcharge for all cashpoint withdrawals and financial transactions in a desperate attempt to prevent citizens withdrawing their money from the country’s beleaguered banks. Ministers hope the controversial move could raise as much as €180 million, which the Athens government hopes will help the country avoid defaulting on debts owed to international creditors. As the Greek economy teeters on the verge of bankruptcy, millions of panicking citizens have completely cleared their accounts – pulling more than €28 billion out of banks and pushing the total cash revenue held in the country’s financial institutions to a 10-year low. The controversial introduction of mandatory cashpoint charges still requires approval by the European Central Bank but is expected to amount to €1 for every €1,000 transaction. While the measure is unlikely to impact on day-to-day withdrawals, Greece hopes it will deter citizens clearing out their bank accounts.

Headline:   Liquidity drought could spark market bloodbath, warns IIF

Headline: Global bond selloff deepens

Investors face a “painful” adjustment in a world of evaporating liquidity and higher US interest rates that will trigger huge market swings with potentially catastrophic consequences, the Institute of International Finance has warned. Timothy Adams, the chief executive of the IIF, which represents the world’s biggest banks, described liquidity as the “top issue” at high level meetings of central bankers, chief executives and other financial institutions. He warned that the raft of regulation introduced in the wake of the 2008 crisis could potentially cause market gyrations larger than last October’s “flash crash” in US Treasuries. “Once you bring the rapid change in major benchmark prices and a change in the architecture of the global financial system together, you could end up with outcomes that are pretty painful, and certainly unknowable.” Mr Adams warned that the US Federal Reserve’s first interest rate rise in almost a decade would also cause disruption, and that the “the most transparent and telegraphed move in monetary history” was unlikely to prevent some dollar denominated debts from “blowing up” in emerging markets.

Headline: Brazil faces surge in number of dengue fever cases

Brazil has registered nearly 746,000 cases of the mosquito-borne disease dengue fever this year with nine states experiencing an epidemic, the health ministry has announced. At 368 cases per 100,000 residents it amounts to an epidemic by World Health Organisation standards, but officials say the outbreak is not nationwide. Relaxed prevention and an increase in home water storage have been blamed. More than half of the cases were in Sao Paulo. The number of cases there – the most populous state – has tripled since last year. Nationwide there have been 235% more cases than in the same period (from January to 18 April) last year.

A minor geomagnetic storm is in progress on May 6th following the arrival of a CME at 01:43 UT. The CME’s weak impact did not immediately spark bright auroras. However, storming could intensify as Earth passes through the CME’s wake. Meanwhile, the sun is no longer quiet. Emerging sunspot AR2339 unleashed an intense X2-class solar flare on May 5th at 22:11 UT. A pulse of UV radiation and X-rays from the flare caused a strong radio blackout over the Pacific side of Earth. This map shows the extent of the blackout, which affected frequencies below 20 MHz. Mariners, aviators, and ham radio operators are the type of people who might have noticed the disturbance. The explosion also hurled a CME into space: movie. Traveling faster than 1100 km/s (2.5 million mph), the expanding cloud does not appear to be heading for Earth. In addition to causing a radio blackout, the flare also caused a radio burst. Immediately after the flare, a roar of static bellowed from the loudspeakers of shortwave receivers on Pacific isles and western parts of North America.

Headline: ‘Tornado’ hits Germany, leaving extensive damage

The German town of Buetzow has been left extensively damaged by what residents described as a tornado that tore off roofs, overturned cars and ripped up trees, with more destruction reported in other parts of Germany. Roof tiles and debris were strewn across the streets and buildings left severely damaged when the storm struck on Tuesday. Dozens of cars were destroyed and people injured as trees were upturned and buildings damaged by the winds. One person in the city of Hamburg was killed by falling debris. The extent of the damage was still to be seen as emergency services tried to assess the situation. More storms are expected in Germany over the next days. Eyewitnesses spoke of a track of devastation across the area caused by a tornado but the German weather service Wetter Online said the winds did not meet the exact definition of a twister. One Buetzow resident, who described the storm as “insane”, said: “I saw that the clouds were very strange … and it was like a punch in the face, the wind and water and rain. “I have never seen anything like this in my life, it is complete madness. Hundreds of trees have been overturned, completely uprooted, roofs ripped off. You don’t experience something like this every day.”

Headline: “Supporters of the Islamic State in Jerusalem” Threatens Hamas

Residents of Gaza report that an explosion occurred on Monday at the Hamas general security headquarters. According to the reports, which were cited by Yedioth Aharonoth, the blast was the work of Salafists who are demanding the release of several Salafist prisoners being held by Hamas. The Salafist group Salafist Trend on Saturday accused Hamas of torturing the jailed Salafists, and of monitoring and cracking down on other members of the group, threatening Hamas that they must release the prisoners or face consequences. “Once again we ask the wise people of Gaza to stop the ongoing Hamas criminality and abusive detention of our brothers before it’s too late,” read the Salafist statement. According to the report Monday, a group of activists published an announcement before the blast, stating “we give Hamas 72 hours to release all the prisoners.” It remains unclear if the group of activists referred to in the report is the same Salafist Trend group. Last month Hamas arrested Salafists who it claimed contacted Islamic State (ISIS), which has been growing a presence in Gaza, Judea and Samaria.

Headline: Mortar Strike in Golan Heights Injures UN Soldiers

Two UN peacekeepers were wounded on Monday when mortar shells fired from Syria hit their base in the Israeli-held sector of the Golan Heights, an army spokesman said. “Mortar shells hit the Golan in Ein Zivan and in the Zivanit UNDOF base. Two UN peacekeeping soldiers were evacuated to Israel for medical care,” Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner wrote on his official Twitter account. Israel public radio said they were lightly wounded in the incident. The mortar strike took place near Quneitra in Syria, where heavy fighting has been taking place between rival rebel forces. Shortly after the incident, the IDF stated the mortar was in fact the result of “spillover” from the Syrian conflict, and not deliberately fired at Israel. Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told AFP that fighting has been taking place since last week between rebel groups in an area close to Syria’s ceasefire line with Israel. “There is still infighting going on among rebel groups in Qahtaniya near the ceasefire line with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. They’re exchanging shellfire,” he said.

Headline: Hamas ‘Nakba’ Rally at Terror Base on Israeli Border

The “refugee” department of the Hamas terrorist movement will on Tuesday at 5 p.m. hold a massive rally marking 67 years to the “Nakba” – the “catastrophe” of the establishment of modern Israel, and the inability of the Arab countries to destroy the fledgling renascent Jewish state. The massive rally is to be held at the “Palestine” terrorist training site located in Beit Lahiya adjacent to the border between Gaza and Israel in the northern part of Gaza. Abdallah Hasuna, director of the “refugee” department which is tasked with handling descendants of the Arab residents of Israel who left during the 1948 War of Independence, noted this would be the first time a massive event was held at a base associated with Hamas’s “military wing,” the Al-Qassam Brigades. Hasuna said by holding the mass rally at the terrorist base there was a message emphasizing the path of the “struggle of the Palestinian people.”

Headline: Tensions brew in Jordan over Muslim Brotherhood rift

Jordan’s authorization of a breakaway wing of the Muslim Brotherhood has sent tensions soaring between the decades-old organisation and the government, accused of exploiting the rift to weaken the kingdom’s main opposition force. In early March, the government gave its consent to the formation of the splinter Brotherhood group, led by a former head of the movement. The offshoot aims to severe ties with the Brotherhood’s arm in Egypt, where hundreds of supporters have been killed and thousands detained since Islamist president Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the army in 2013. Analysts say Jordan’s recognition of the new group — known as the Muslim Brotherhood Association — risks fanning discontent among the traditional opposition power base at a time when the kingdom is battling jihadists in neighbouring Iraq and Syria.

Headline: Nusra-led militants pound Hezbollah, Syria army posts near Lebanon border

Islamist rebels led by Al Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate launched a preemptive strike Monday on pro-regime forces in a mountainous area near the Lebanese border, setting off fierce clashes, a monitor said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Al Nusra Front and other groups attacked positions belonging to the regime and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which backs the government, in the Qalamoun region. “Violent clashes are ongoing since this morning between Hezbollah, regime troops and pro-regime militiamen on one side and Islamist factions and Al Nusra on the other side,” the group said. Last year, government forces backed by the Shia Islamist Hezbollah movement managed to expel rebels from most of Qalamoun, which lies north of Damascus and runs along the Lebanese border. But opposition fighters remain entrenched in the mountainous area along the border with Lebanon, and have launched attacks from there. A source close to Al Nusra confirmed the fighting underway in the region. “This is the zero hour and the battle in the region has begun,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Headline:  Yemen: Saudi Arabia used cluster bombs, rights groups says

The Saudi-led coalition carrying out air strikes in Yemen has used US-supplied cluster bombs banned by much of the world, a rights group has said. Human Rights Watch (HRW) said it had evidence that the bombs were used at least twice against Houthi rebels. There were no reports of casualties. Cluster bombs spread small bombs over a wide area and can leave unexploded munitions buried in the ground. They are banned under a treaty signed by 116 countries, but not Saudi Arabia. The US and the other countries in Saudi Arabia’s military coalition are not signatories of the 2008 treaty either. The US does however bar the sale of the weapons to countries that use them in civilian areas. HRW, which is based in the US, said one of the alleged cluster bomb strikes occurred in the al-Amar area of al-Safraa.

The United Nations says the humanitarian situation in Yemen has grown desperate after weeks of air strikes. “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is holding consultations with members of the alliance in defense of legitimacy in Yemen and all countries that support it, to create specific areas inside Yemen to deliver humanitarian supplies, where all aerial operations will stop at specific times to allow these supplies in, as stipulated by UN Security Council resolution 2216,” Jubeir said in a statement.

Headline: Hundreds protest against Al-Qaeda control of Yemen city

Hundreds of residents have protested against Al-Qaeda controlling Mukalla, the capital of southeast Yemen’s Hadramawt province, a month after jihadis overran the city, witnesses said Monday. “Batarfi out out, Hadramawt wants freedom,” they chanted late on Sunday, referring to Khalid Batarfi, a senior Al-Qaeda figure who has reportedly been named the “emir of Mukalla.” Batarfi was among more than 300 prisoners who escaped from a Mukalla jail stormed by militants as Al-Qaeda overran the city last month. Sunday’s protest erupted after militants stormed a mosque following evening prayers and one pointed a gun at the imam and threatened to kill him for criticizing Al-Qaeda, a local official told AFP. “Southerners wake up. Say ‘no’ to Al-Qaeda and ‘no’ to Houthis,” protesters chanted, also declaring their rejection of the Shiite rebels who have seized the capital and are fighting to expand their territory in the south.

Syria Headline:   Syrian General Injured in Rebel Suicide Bombing

A suicide bomber has blown himself up in the centre of the Syrian capital, Damascus, officials and activists say. State media said troops had foiled an attack by a “terrorist group” in the Rukn al-Din district, where several major security facilities are located. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the jihadist group al-Nusra Front had targeted an army general responsible for logistics. Maj Gen Mohammed Eid was injured, and one of his guards was killed, it added. However, security sources denied that the general had been targeted. Monday’s attack took place near a building used by the Syrian army’s munitions and supply division. Witnesses told the AFP news agency that the blast emanated from a small motorcycle, and that it was followed by 15 minutes of gunfire. “A terrorist group rode into the Rukn al-Din neighbourhood on motorcycles and began clashing with security forces,” a security official told AFP. “When they realised they could not escape, one of them detonated a suicide belt he was wearing,” he said, adding that security forces killed the remaining rebels. A local hospital said it was treating six people wounded by the explosion, but did not identify them. Rami Abdul Rahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said a member of al-Nusra Front had blown himself up next to a car carrying Gen Eid as it passed through Rukn al-Din.

Syria Headline:   Warning Intelligence Update: Possible Upheaval in the Syrian Capital

Major operations targeting entrenched anti-Assad forces in the outskirts of Damascus appear to be upcoming as Hezbollah and the Syrian regime prepare to target anti-Assad hold out positions in the capital and its countryside. In addition, indicators have emerged of a possible intervention by regional actors to assist in defeating Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. This includes ongoing negotiations to deepen the cooperation between prominent hardline Islamist groups Jaysh al-Islam and Harakat Ahrar al-Sham, which would increase the effectiveness of anti-Assad forces regardless of direct regional intervention. Together these trends indicate that a major shakeup of the military situation in Damascus Province is likely in coming weeks.

Syria Headline:   Syrian air raid near school kills 4 children

Syrian activists say a government airstrike near a school in the northern city of Aleppo has killed at least seven people, including children. The Aleppo Media Center activist group and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights say the strike Sunday hit Aleppo’s Seif Al-Dawla neighborhood. The Observatory put the death toll at seven, including four children. An AFP correspondent described buildings in ruins and small bulldozers working to clear the rubble. Classroom walls had completely collapsed, exposing mangled chairs and desks, and men carried whatever books they could save out of the building. The Aleppo Media center said at least 10 people were killed and around 20 wounded. Differences in death tolls are common in Syria in the chaotic aftermath of attacks.

Syria Headline: Islamic State reports new gains northeastern Syria

Fierce battles continue between the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the eastern countryside of Tel Temir (50 km west of Hasakah), northeastern Syria, after the group launched a major offensive on the villages along the Khabur River, reaching the highway between Aleppo and Hasakah. The area has seen heavy fighting during the last two days, especially in the villages of Tel Jadaya and Tel Fwaida, north of the al-Khabur River, resulting in the death of dozens on both sides. Nevertheless, IS was able to make new gains in the area. Speaking to ARA News, Damhat Zagro, a fighter in the YPG ranks, said that an IS suicide attack struck the YPG headquarters in the village of Tel Rumman. “Following two successive attacks on the village (Tel Rumman) from different directions, the group was easily able to control the northern route towards the city of Hasakah,” he explained. In a related development, an Assyrian fighter from the Haras al-Khabur forces, Mikhail Dinkha, told ARA News that the terrorist group received new reinforcements from Aleppo, including more militants and heavy armored vehicles.

Iraq Headline: Deadly attacks hit Iraqi capital

At least 13 people have been killed by a car bomb in Baghdad in one of the deadliest attacks in the Iraqi capital this year. “At least 13 people were killed and 39 wounded in a car bomb facing a popular restaurant in the Karrada area,” a police colonel told news agency AFP. Karrada is an area full of shops and restaurants and would have been busy on Saturday night, which marks the end of the weekend in Iraq. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack in the predominantly Shiite district, which comes after a series of similar bombings in the capital. Eleven people were killed and more than 40 wounded in a wave of car bomb attacks on Thursday and another nine were killed in two car bombings in Baghdad on Monday. The Islamic State jihadist group claimed it carried out those attacks on Shiite districts of Baghdad to avenge attacks on displaced persons from a Sunni province.

Iraq Headline: Iraqi forces plead for help as ISIS closes in on refinery

Iraqi forces besieged inside the country’s largest oil refinery are running low on food and pleading for reinforcements to save them from Islamic State militants who have advanced deep into the compound in the past week. The insurgents now hold large sections of the sprawling Baiji refinery complex in northern Iraq where some 200 policemen, soldiers and elite special forces are holding out. “We are surrounded by Daesh from all sides,” said a policeman called Mohanad, speaking via telephone from the refinery where his unit has taken up defensive positions in a guest house on the eastern side of the complex. Daesh is the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS or ISIL in English. “We can hear Daesh fighters shouting and threatening to behead anyone they catch. We are running short of ammunition, food and drinking water. We eat only one meal a day. We tear our uniforms to bandage other soldiers’ and policemen’s wounds.”

A day after police killed two gunmen who tried to ambush a Garland, Texas, event featuring controversial cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed, details began to emerge about the shooters. One suspect, identified as Elton Simpson by a federal law enforcement source, linked himself to ISIS in a tweet posted just before the attack. He also was no stranger to federal investigators. In 2011, he was convicted of making a false statement involving international and domestic terrorism. The other suspect, identified as Nadir Soofi by two federal law enforcement officials, was Simpson’s roommate in a Phoenix apartment. He wasn’t well-known to federal law enforcement and was not on the FBI’s radar, one of the officials said. Investigators were combing through evidence retrieved from the shooters’ Arizona home to help piece together a timeline of how their plot came together, the official said.

Ukraine’s military spokesperson Andriy Lysenko said on Sunday that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and six others had been wounded over the preceeding 24 hours. Lysenko said more Russian heavy weapons had been deployed to east Ukraine and that there are currently more attacks on Ukrainian army defensive positions than at any time since the two-month-old Minsk ceasefire deal was struck. Russian-backed militants meanwhile claimed Ukraine was shelling central Donetsk with Andrei Purgin, Russian-backed militant leader saying on social media: “We are inches away from the Minsk agreements falling apart & the start of full-scale hostilities”. Appearing on Russia state TV Eduard Basurin another prominent leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic also claimed that the Ukrainian army was firing heavy weapons at the centre of occupied Donetsk. The claims have fuelled specualtion they could be used as a pretext for launching a new Russian offensive to seize more Ukrainian territory.

Headline: 2 Russian war ships & submarine detected near Latvian border

Headline: NATO & allies stage thousands-strong drills across Europe

The Latvian National Armed Forces say they have spotted two Russian military vessels and a submarine near to the Latvian border. The ships and the submarine were allegedly detected in the Latvian exclusive economic zone, just eight kilometers from Latvia’s border. The Latvian National Armed Forces say they recognized the vessels: a Project 775 class landing ship, a Parchim class corvette (Project 1331M in Russia), and a Project 877 Paltus diesel-electric submarine. Latvia says its National Armed Forces have detected Russian vessels 42 times this year alone. In 2014, Russian military ships and planes approached the Latvian border about 250 times, it said. Maneuvers in Latvia’s exclusive economic zone, which is not in the country’s territorial waters, do violate international regulations. However, Latvian authorities have frequently expressed their concern over the presence of Russian vessels near its frontier.

Headline:  Senate prepares to advance bill on Iran nuclear deal

Republican Senate leaders, worried that proposals from conservatives in their caucus could upend the fragile bipartisan agreement on legislation targeting the Iranian nuclear deal, are poised to cut off debate on the bill, Politico reports. The U.S., Iran, and five other nations reached an interim agreement at the end of March to limit and monitor Iran’s nuclear energy program in exchange for a rollback of the sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy. Negotiators are working toward an end-of-June deadline for a final deal. The Senate is debating a bill that would allow Congress to review any final agreement that emerges. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee managed to hammer out a proposal in March that passed the panel unanimously and drew the reluctant backing of the White House. That bill would have allowed Congress 30 days to pass a resolution disapproving of a deal with Iran before any U.S. sanctions are lifted. But now that the bill has hit the Senate floor, several conservative Republicans are pushing amendments to demand more of Iran, and the White House is threatening to veto any bill that could jeopardize the international agreement.

A suicide car bomber targeted a bus carrying Afghan civil servants on their way to work in the capital on Monday, killing one civilian and wounding 15 people, officials said. Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility for the attack in the west of Kabul. Violence has continued in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of most foreign forces last year, with civilians frequent victims. Witnesses said the bomber in a sedan detonated his explosives early in the morning as the large white bus carrying employees of the attorney general’s office passed. A statement from the Ministry of Interior said one person was killed and 15 were wounded.

Afghan officials have confirmed at least 16 soldiers are dead and more than a dozen wounded after a Taliban attack in a northeastern border region. An unspecified number of soldiers are missing after the assault late Sunday in the remote Badakhshan province.  The Taliban insurgents reportedly seized weapons, several tanks and vehicles. The attack came a day after Afghan peace negotiators and Taliban representatives, together with neutral Afghan peace activists and elders concluded unofficial “discussions” in Qatar in the latest effort to end Afghanistan’s long war.

Headline: South Sudan’s future at grave risk: Kerry

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday that South Sudan’s government and rebels had failed to make compromises needed to end a civil conflict and that this was putting the future of the world’s youngest nation at “grave risk”. South Sudan split from Sudan as an independent nation in 2011, helped by the political and financial backing of the United States and other Western powers. But a political crisis between President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar, who he sacked as his deputy in 2013, erupted into a conflict in December of that year. Fighting has rumbled on since then with both sides ignoring repeated agreements to stop. “South Sudan’s leaders … have not yet chosen to make the compromises needed for peace,” Kerry told a news conference in Nairobi, noting that the fighting put at “grave risk” the promising future the oil-producing nation once had.

Headline: Libya: Three Brothers Crucified by ISIS

The Libyan Air Force launched a series of airstrikes against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) positions in the eastern city of Derna on Saturday, the stronghold of a number of extremist groups currently operating in the war-torn country. Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat on Sunday, a high-ranking Libyan Air Force official, who requested anonymity, said the targeted ISIS positions in Derna included weapons and ammunition storage facilities used by the extremist group. In an online statement, which also included photographs, ISIS also said it had been targeted in Derna, though it maintained the strikes had been limited to its “Islamic Police” headquarters in the city. Neither the source from the Libyan Air Force nor ISIS gave further details regarding any losses the group suffered in the city following the strikes. Meanwhile, sources from the Libyan National Army told Asharq Al-Awsat on Sunday that forces from the militant Libyan Dawn group recently attempted to take over the Al-Watia Airbase, which lies 87 miles (140 kilometers) southwest of the capital Tripoli. The sources said the advance on Al-Watia by Libyan Dawn had been blocked after fierce clashes occurred between the militants and army units in the region surrounding the base.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had learned of “concrete threats” of terror attacks against Jewish or Israeli targets in Tunisia. The Tunisian government quickly denied the claims, saying no such threats existed. A statement from Netanyahu’s office said: “Information indicates that there are plans for terrorist attacks against Israelis or Jews in Tunisia.” But a senior official in the Tunisian interior ministry, who asked not to be named, told AFP: “We have nothing on that. There are no threats.” The threats are connected to the Lag BaOmer Jewish festival, which will be celebrated on May 7, Netanyahu’s statement said. It urged Jews not to visit Tunisia during the festival.

Headline: Three reported killed in unrest over Burundi president’s vote bid

Three protesters were killed in Burundi’s capital on Monday, the Red Cross said, as demonstrations against a decision by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s to seek a third term in office ran into a second week. Police in the Musaga district of Bujumbura fired shots toward lines of protesters who were hurling stones, a Reuters witness said. An explosion also wounded at least two officers. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told a news conference in Nairobi the decision to seek a third term “flies directly in the face” of the constitution. Nkurunziza, he said, should pay heed to public concern. Police spokesman Liboire Bakunduwukize denied two protesters were killed, and said 15 police were wounded by a hand grenade. “Today, tomorrow or the day after, wherever they will hurl grenades or wherever they will shoot, the police has a right to throw a grenade as well and even to shoot back and that’s how it will be,” he told reporters at a hospital. Hundreds more rallied elsewhere in the capital, called out by civil society groups who argue that under a peace agreement that ended a civil war, Nkurunziza could not serve another term. Red Cross spokesman Alexis Manirakiza said three protesters had been killed and 35 wounded.

The government has offered support to those worst affected and has warned the number of destroyed homes could rise. “There are 106 homes that are uninhabitable, this morning,” said Queensland government Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller. “It will be a couple of days, maybe even a few more than that, for us to work out whether or not they are able to go back into their homes,” she said.

Headline:   Palestinian News Agency: ‘Freedom Flotilla III’ is set to challenge Gaza blockade

Three ships are expected to set sail for Gaza this summer as part of a humanitarian mission to Gaza, Ma’an News Agency reported Friday. Details of the mission, coined “Freedom Flotilla III,” remain under the radar. Berawi Zaher, coordinator of the international mission, told Ma’an that its details, including the ships’ departure time and fleet location, will not be released in an effort to hamper Israeli authorities from intervening and exerting international pressure to halt the execution of the mission. The flotilla will be the third of its kind launched by the FCC, the first being 2010’s Mavi Marmara, which ended in violence after being intercepted by the IDF’s navy. Two activists were killed in the confrontation. This past summer, in the midst and aftermath of Operation Protective Edge, the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) threatened to send a second flotilla, “Freedom Flotilla II,” to challenge the blockade.

Headline:   Iran swings behind escalated Syrian-Hizballah anti-Israel terror offensive on the Golan

The Syrian and Hizballah military delegations visiting Tehran this week achieved their purpose: debkafile’s intelligence and military sources report that in three days of talks up until Friday April 30, Syrian Defense Minister Gen. Fahad Jassim al-Freij procured from his Iranian counterpart Hussein Dehghan, approval for a stepped up terror campaign against Israeli forces and civilians on the Golan, to be executed by terrorist surrogates. Iran pledged its support for this campaign and promised to make the Revolutionary Guards and Afghani Shiite forces present in Syria available, in the event of an Israeli counter-attack. A stamping ground, designated “the open area,” was to be provided for all terrorist militias willing to attack Israel. It would stretch from Damascus to the Golan – a distance of 60 km by road – and take in the Syrian Hermon and Lebanese Chebaa Farms. Syrian and Hizballah military intelligence services will take responsibility for coordinating their operations and providing them with arms and intelligence. According to the plan approved in Tehran, Syria and Hizballah will establish new militias for their campaign as well as deploying existing terrorist groups. One such framework, made up of Syrian Druzes, was set up in recent weeks. Its first attack last Sunday April 26 – an attempt to plant a bomb near an Israeli Golan border position – was a flop. All four bombers were killed in an Israeli air strike and the device did not detonate.

Headline: Iran’s claim that Israel has 400 nuclear weapons

“It’s laughable that [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu has become everybody’s nonproliferation guru. He is sitting on 400 nuclear warheads, nuclear warheads that have been acquired in violation of the NPT [Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty].” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, speaking in New York, April 29, 2015

In the debate over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the unacknowledged nuclear stockpile of Israel often comes up. In the 1950s and 1960s, Israel secretly acquired the technology and material to build nuclear weapons, frequently misleading the U.S. government about its intentions. (France was Israel’s partner in the building of the Dimona reactor in the Negev desert, while South Africa is believed by some to have assisted Israel in conducting at least one nuclear test in the 1970s.) Zarif quickly noted that Israel (unlike Iran) is not a member of the NPT, but added:  “Those who provided them with the technology were members of the NPT and violated the NPT to provide them with the technology, and we know who they were. And now they are the proponents of nonproliferation.” (Actually, France’s cooperation with Israel ended in 1966, before the NPT went into effect in 1970.)

Headline: Syrian Islamists take over crossing near Israel

On Thursday, Islamist rebels of Ahrar al-Sham in Syria seized a crossing in Quneitra province near the Israeli border. Ahrar al-Sham took over the crossing of al-Qahtaniya after three days of fierce clashes with another Islamist group known as Army of Jihad –which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS/ISIS). Haitham Nassar, a media activist accompanying Ahrar al-Sham in Quneitra, told ARA News that dozens were killed on both sides during the clashes. According to military sources, the crossing of al-Qahtaniya is considered a strategic one for its proximity to the Golan Heights. Ahrar al-Sham has played a role in the rebels operation in Idlib that resulted in the control of the city after forcing Assad army to withdraw.

Headline: Yemeni conflict spills into Saudi Arabia

Three Saudi troops and “dozens” of Houthi rebels were killed as Saudi forces repelled a major attack from inside Yemen, Saudi officials say. The rebels attacked near the town of Najran, reports say, in what would be their biggest assault on Saudi soil since a Saudi military campaign began. A statement by the Saudi Press Agency, SPA, said the overnight attack happened on its southern border. Identifying the attackers as Shia Houthi rebels and groups allied to them, SPA said Saudi ground troops exchanged fire with them and called in air strikes. Earlier on Thursday, a Saudi border guard was killed by a mortar shell close to the border with Yemen in the south-west Saudi province of Jizan. Seventeen Saudi troops have been killed in attacks by Yemeni rebels during the last five weeks.

Headline: Air strikes kill civilians in Yemeni capital

Warplanes from a Saudi-led coalition struck a residential district of the Yemeni capital Sanaa overnight, killing eight to 10 civilians, residents said on Friday. The Saba state news agency, controlled by the Houthi movement in charge of Sanaa, put the death toll in the Sawan district at 20 and said more than 50 people had been wounded. It said casualties included woman and children. Warplanes also struck a military airbase near the capital. Saba said medics had rushed to Sawan to try to rescue residents trapped under the rubble of homes. The strikes came days after jets bombed the runway to stop an Iranian aid plane landing. Damage to the airport has stopped aid deliveries, officials said. In the southern port city of Aden, clashes continued between the Houthi fighters and local militiamen over the control of the main airport. At least 27 civilians and fighters from both sides were killed in the fight for the airport and in the port district of Mualla on Friday, a local militia source said. Eight Houthis were killed in an ambush by local militiamen in the central Crater district, the source said.

Headline: Islamic State beheads, shoots 15 Yemeni soldiers

The Islamic State in Yemen claimed credit for the brutal execution of 15 Yemeni soldiers who were captured in the city of Azzan in Shabwa province earlier this month. The treatment of the captured soldiers by the Islamic State presents a stark contrast to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s (AQAP) handling of captured Yemeni soldiers. The Islamic State’s “Media Office for Shabwa Province” released a short, two minute 19 second video called “Eliminating the Apostates” on Twitter today. The video was obtained and translated by the SITE Intelligence Group. In the video, the Islamic State displays 15 Yemeni soldiers. Local media reports indicated that tribal militias overran a military camp operated by the Yemeni Army’s 2nd Mountain Brigade in the city of Azzan in Shabwa province on April 12. Islamic State fighters from “Wilayat Ataq,” or Ataq province (Ataq is a city in Shabwa province), are reported to have executed the Yemeni soldiers days later, on April 14. The graphic execution of the Yemeni soldiers draws a contrast in methodology between the Islamic State and al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the dominant jihadist group in Yemen. The Islamic State has been challenging al Qaeda for control of the global jihad. The Islamic State in Yemen, like other Islamic State branches in the Middle East and Africa, has been indiscriminate in its application of violence. In its first major attack in Yemen, the group killed more than 100 people in suicide attacks that targeted Houthi mosques in the capital of Sana’a. The Houthis, a Shiite group that is backed by Iran, have taken over most of northern and eastern Yemen, and have encroached on areas in the south. The Islamic State has accused AQAP of being soft on the Houthis, and has sought to cleave off the more hardline elements of AQAP’s rank and file.

Syria Headline:  Syrian Army Preempts Rebel Attacks in Regime Bastion

Syria’s army launched an offensive Friday against rebel groups in a bid to strengthen its control in the northwest Latakia province, a bastion of the regime, a monitor said. After a series of losses in neighboring Idlib province, the army is fortifying its positions to preempt potential rebel attacks on Latakia, home to the small Alawite religious community from which President Bashar al-Assad hails. Regime forces attacked rebel positions overnight from Thursday until Friday in the northeast of Latakia province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. “Seven opposition fighters and 10 pro-government forces were killed,” the Britain-based monitoring group said. Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said that “the battles are taking place around the Nabi Yunes hilltop, a strategic position 1,500 metres (5,000 feet) above sea level, on the edge of Idlib and Hama provinces.” The regime controls the hilltop itself, but opposition groups have taken over the foot of the hill to the west and northwest. “To protect Nabi Yunes, regime forces are trying to dislodge the rebels,” Abdel Rahman said.

Syria Headline:   Syrian government pounds Idlib as troops besieged

Syrian airstrikes have killed at least 20 people in northwest Idlib province while regime forces tried to battle their way out of a siege in the provincial capital, activists said Thursday. In northern Syria, rebels have advanced on Mastouma, one of the few remaining regime garrisons in Idlib province. Overnight airstrikes targeted rebels north and south of the town of Jisr al-Shughur, which recently fell to the insurgents, and in and around the town of Saraqeb. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 23 civilians, including five children, were killed in those airstrikes. Observatory director Rami Abdel-Rahman said the regime was trying to halt the advance toward Mastouma. The airstrikes are “attempting to terrorize the rebels, but they end up killing civilians,” he said.

Syria Headline:   An Army in All Corners:” Assad’s Campaign Strategy in Syria

U.S. policymakers in April 2015 appear to be returning to the position that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad represents the “least worst option in Syria” for American strategic interests. Assad is often compared to the Islamic State (ISIS) with the implication that Assad is the lesser of two evils. Senior administration officials including Secretary of State John Kerry signaled support for diplomatic negotiations with the regime in March 2015, rather than developing a committed strategy to remove Assad from power.  American leaders’ ambivalence reflects the limitations of U.S. policy which attempts to treat Syria as the backdrop for a narrow counterterrorism problem rather than a comprehensive national security issue. This outlook is dangerously flawed.

Iraq Headline: IS Claims Six Car Bombings in Baghdad as Revenge for Displaced Sunnis from Anbar Killed in the Capital

Five car bombs exploded across Baghdad on Thursday evening, killing at least 17 people, in attacks that have become more frequent in the Iraqi capital since a decade-old night time curfew was lifted earlier this year. The deadliest of the blasts, which appeared to be coordinated, took place in the Iskan neighborhood, where five people were killed, police and medical sources said. Iraqi authorities lifted the curfew on Baghdad in February, seeking to restore a sense of normality to the city as security forces battle Islamic State militants who overran large sections in the north and west of the country last summer. But militants may be exploiting greater freedom of movement to carry out more attacks in the capital. Thursday was the third day of bombings in Baghdad this week. Another of the car bombs on Thursday exploded near a children’s hospital in Jamila, killing three civilians. Four people were killed by a bomb in a commercial street in al-Hurriya, three more in the Talbiya district and two in the Ur neighborhood.

A suicide attack by ISIS jihadists in the disputed Iraqi town of Baiji has killed at least 16 members of Iraqi security forces, local agencies reported Friday. Earlier on Friday, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced that a tense battle was ongoing between national security forces and extremists trying to capture  parts of Baiji, including its refinery complex which is the biggest oil facility in Iraq. A police officer in Salahaddin province, where Baiji is located, said Iraqi fighters protecting the refinery were under intense attacks by the jihadists. According to the officer, ISIS fighters have been able to surround Iraqi forces inside the refinery and cut off military support. The Iraq Oil Report, an independent news outlet, reported Friday that after a series of assaults the jihadists now control most of Baiji refinery.

The DC-based think tank Bipartisan Policy Centre (BPC) in a report released last Thursday says the United States must look for a new reliable strategic partner such as the Kurds in Iraq and Syria to replace Turkey since Turkey is no longer dependable ally. Since the Cold War, the United States and Turkey have had a strong partnership based on shared strategic interests and aspirations towards sharing the same democratic values, the think tank says. But the Bipartisan Policy Centre now thinks that Turkey undermining U.S. interests (including the fight against the Islamic state (IS)). Moreover, , and the Justice and Development Party (AKP) is eroding democracy in Turkey. Therefore the think tank proposes that the United States should build a US airbase in Kurdistan, as an alternative to the Turkish Incirlik airbase. According to the BPC, Turkey’s continued refusal to allow access to the Turkish airbase has forced the US to fly missions out of the gulf. In addition, the US should discuss the delisting of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that has emerged as a viable partner against the terrorist IS-group.

Headline:  Russia Conducts Nuclear Bomber Flight Near Alaska

Two Russian nuclear-capable bombers intruded into the U.S. air defense zone near Alaska last week in the latest saber rattling by Moscow, defense officials said. The Tu-95 Bear H bombers flew into the Alaska zone on April 22. But unlike most earlier incursions, no U.S. interceptor jets were dispatched to shadow them, said defense officials familiar with the latest U.S.-Russian aerial encounter. Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a spokesman for the U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), declined to confirm the incursion. But he said no jets were dispatched last week to intercept intruding aircraft. The incident was the first Russian bomber incursion of a U.S. or Canadian air defense zone this year. Officials said it likely signals the start of Russia’s long-range aviation spring training cycle. Further aerial incursions are expected.

Headline: US Navy accompanies 4 ships through Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. Navy accompanied four American-flagged ships and a British vessel moving through the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf on Thursday, and officials said the U.S. will offer that aid to any other nation concerned about interference from Iranian vessels. U.S. Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said the four U.S. ships belonged to the Navy’s Military Sealift Command or were contract vessels. Those ships have civilian crews and are used to carry cargo or re-supply U.S. Navy ships. Air Force Col. Pat Ryder, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said that any U.S.-flagged ship can ask to be accompanied by Navy warships through the narrow strait, which includes Iranian territorial waters. Officials use the word “accompany” rather than escort, because they say the Navy ships are positioned nearby and are ready to respond if needed, but they don’t travel back and forth through the strait alongside each contract or Sealift Command vessel as they would during an escort. Ryder said the U.S. Navy ships don’t intend to go into Iranian territorial waters.

Headline: Afghan delegation to meet with Taliban in Qatar: officials

New photos purport to show ISIS fighters training at a terrorist camp in Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border, in what may be yet another sign of the black-clad jihadist army’s expanding reach. The pictures, obtained by a Pakistani journalist earlier this month and published by the military blog The Long War Journal, show apparent ISIS radicals training, marching in formation and brandishing heavy artillery. The photos were allegedly taken in the “Ustad Yasir” camp in the Logar province in eastern Afghanistan. The camp is believed to be operated by the Sa’ad bin Abi Waqas Front — a group named for an Al Qaeda leader who was killed by a U.S. airstrike in 2011. The camp is named for a key Taliban ideologue and top recruiter who was one of more than two dozen senior and mid-level Taliban officials killed in a 2012 “purge.” The photos raise questions about who the fighters are and how closely they are aligned with the Islamic State leadership in Syria and Iraq. Analysts said they could be disaffected former Taliban fighters — as naming their camp for an accused Taliban turncoat might suggest — of unaffiliated terrorists whose sympathies lie with the infamous jihadist army.

Headline:  ISIS Pushes West, Eyeing a New Caliphate in Tunisia

There are increased signs that the self-proclaimed Islamic State has sets its sights on expanding its caliphate to Tunisia next. In the last two weeks, ISIS has published videos taunting the government, shared pictures of some its fighters brandishing guns and made fun of a Tunisian tourism campaign in the wake of a March bombing at a museum that was reportedly carried out by ISIS. The group also has posted online photos of supposed Tunisian martyrs to its cause—though the tweets don’t make clear where those purported members died. ISIS also announced that it is creating the Islamic State of Afrikah, an antiquated name for the region that is now Tunisia. For a time, Western counter-terrorism analysts hoped that ISIS’s recent territorial losses in Iraq weakened its ability to expand internationally. This lunge toward Tunisia undercuts those hopes.

Headline:   Turkish police fire tear gas, water cannon at May Day protesters

Turkish police fired tear gas and water cannon at hundreds of stone-throwing May Day protesters on Friday, after they defied a ban and tried to march on Istanbul’s Taksim Square. Europe’s biggest city was under a security lockdown as thousands of police manned barricades and closed streets to stop demonstrations at Taksim, a traditional rallying ground for leftists that saw weeks of unrest in 2013. Riot police unleashed water cannon and chased protesters down side streets in the nearby Besiktas neighborhood and also they also fired off canisters of tear gas, a Reuters reporter said. Demonstrators lobbed stones and bottles at police and set off fireworks. Istanbul police said nearly 140 people had been detained, although activists said the number was nearly double that. The city’s governor said 6 police officers and 18 protestor had been injured in clashes, which died out as the afternoon wore on and a clean-up operation got underway. Critics say President Tayyip Erdogan and the government have become more authoritarian in the buildup to June elections.

Protesters marched against police violence in cities from New York to Denver on Wednesday, and a large demonstration in Baltimore ended peacefully two days after rioting over the death of a black man injured in police custody. The protests were the latest actions against racial profiling and police use of lethal force sparked by the deaths of African-American men in Cleveland; Ferguson, Missouri; New York and elsewhere in the past year. New York City police arrested more than 60 people as protesters roved in separate groups through Manhattan, blocking traffic in a few areas. Smaller protests occurred in Boston, Houston, Ferguson, Missouri, Washington, D.C., Seattle and a handful of demonstrators were arrested in Denver. In Baltimore, 3,000 National Guard troops and police stood by to enforce a 10 p.m. curfew as thousands of peaceful marchers converged on city hall. The march capped a day of calm in a city that two days earlier saw its worst rioting in decades.

Headline: UN Warns Burundi Could Descend Into Chaos

UN aid agencies warn the growing standoff between protesters and the Burundian government over upcoming presidential elections may results in the country descending into chaos and possibly civil war. The Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said it’s worried about increasingly repressive measures being taken by Burundi’s government to stifle political dissent.  Spokesman Rupert Colville pointed to a series of actions taken by authorities which he said seriously curtail people’s rights to freedom of peaceful expression and assembly. “Hundreds of people have also allegedly been detained since the demonstrations began last Sunday,” he said. “And according to one credible report, over 400 individuals are being held in extremely overcrowded conditions, with detainees actually having to sleep standing up, it is so crowded. “Detainees have also been beaten allegedly particularly on their feet and buttocks.  And some of those who have been released have had trouble walking as a result of those beatings.”

The Tuareg rebels in Mali have reportedly stormed a town in the volatile northern region, killing one person and taking six others hostage. Hama Aboubacrine, the mayor of Bintagoungou, west of the city of Timbuktu, said on Friday that over 50 armed men from the Coordination of Azawad Movements, known by the French language acronym, CMA, came Thursday to “sow terror in Bintagoungou.” The mayor added that the gunmen, who were carrying a CMA flag, plundered several shops and a pharmacy and escaped with two vehicles. The CMA comprises ethnic Arabs and Tuaregs. A UN peacekeeping source in Mali also confirmed the attack in Bintagoungou. There has been no comment from the CMA. On Thursday, 19 people lost their lives in clashes between Tuareg rebels and units of government forces in the northern half of Mali, which has witnessed several days of violence. Tuaregs took control of northern Mali, which they call Azawad, in January 2012. The country has witnessed days of turmoil ever since.

Headline: South Korea workers clash with police during May Day protests in Seoul

South Korean workers have clashed with riot police in the capital, Seoul, during a May Day rally to slam the government’s labor policies. Thousands of riot police set up barricades and tight perimeters with their buses in Seoul to block the 10,000 workers from marching toward the office of President Park Geun-hye on Friday, May 1, the international Labor Day. However, demonstrators tried to move the buses by ropes and police fired water cannons and tear gas in clashes with them to disperse the protesters occupying roads. The demonstrations on Friday came for a third week of protest rallies against the conservative government’s labor policies as well as the last year’s ferry disaster. Protesters blame the government for failing to properly address the tragedy, which claimed more than 300 lives.

Headline: Dog Infects Humans With Plague for First Time in US

A plague-infected dog spread the dangerous disease to four Colorado residents, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health officials told ABC News that this the first report of a dog infecting a human with the plague in the U.S. The dog, a 2-year-old American pit bull terrier, became sick last summer with a fever and jaw rigidity, among other symptoms. The dog’s health declined so quickly that it was euthanized the following day at a local vet’s office, health officials said. Four days later, the dog’s owner entered the hospital with a fever and a bloody cough that became worse over the next few hours, but an initial blood culture was misidentified, according to the CDC report. As the patient’s symptoms grew worse, the test was redone and he was found to have been infected with pnumonic plague, according to the CDC report. The remains of the dog were also tested and were found to be positive for the plague bacteria. “Frankly one of the biggest surprises of this outbreak is the source,” said John Douglas, of Tri-County Health Department in Colorado and one of the study authors. “Primarily … dogs don’t get sick at all or they get a minor illness,” after being infected with the plague.

Headline:   Christians are leaving the faith in droves and the trend isn’t slowing down

An extensive study done by the Pew Research Center has yielded some fascinating information regarding the trajectory of world religions over the next four decades. As of 2010, Christianity was the dominant world religion with roughly 2.2 billion adherents and Muslims were second with about 1.6 billion adherents. If current demographic trends continue however, Islam is expected to catch up to Christianity midway through the 21st century. Furthermore, people are leaving Christianity in droves. About 106 million Christians are expected to switch affiliation from 2010 to 2050 while only about 40 million people are expected to enter Christianity. The religiously unaffiliated (athiests, agnostics) are expected to see the largest net gains from switching, adding more than 61 million followers. In North America, the fastest growing religious groups are Muslims and followers of “other religions” (an umbrella category that includes Baha’is, Jains, Sikhs, Taoists and many smaller faiths). Christianity is expected to decline from 78 percent of the overall population in 2010 to 66 percent in 2050.

Headline:  Almost one-fifth of Americans now take psychotropic drugs to cope with everyday life

The results of the annual Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index are in, and the methods by which many Americans now cope with their daily lives in this brave new world are sobering. Roughly one in five individuals living in the U.S., based on a random survey of people living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, now take some type of mood-altering drug or medication daily just to make it through their miserable lives. After conducting interviews with at least 450 residents of each U.S. state between January and December 2014, researchers found that about 20% of folks, on average, use pharmaceutical pills or other substances on a day-to-day basis to feel happy and stable. Each individual was asked, open-ended, whether or not he or she uses drugs that “affect your mood or help you relax,” and about one in five answered yes. The types of drugs people use to this end were not specified, and may include both “legal” medications like pharma pills, alcohol and nicotine, as well as various “illegal” substances. The worst state with the most drug use was West Virginia at 28.1%, followed closely behind by Rhode Island at 25.9%, Kentucky at 24.5% and Alabama at 24.2%.

Headline: Mount Everest Shrank As Nepal Quake Lifted Kathmandu

The first good view of the aftermath of Nepal’s deadly earthquake from a satellite reveals that a broad swath of ground near Kathmandu lifted vertically, by about 3 feet (1 meter), which could explain why damage in the city was so severe. The data also indicate the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, got a wee bit shorter. The new information comes from Europe’s Sentinel-1A radar satellite. Scientists are racing to interpret the Sentinel data, which were made available today (April 29) just hours after the satellite passed over Nepal. The preliminary data can help guide relief efforts on the ground by identifying areas that were damaged or hit by landslides. Researchers detected the vertical shift in the ground by comparing before-and-after radar images from the satellite using a technique that produces an image called an interferogram. The resulting images have rainbow-colored areas that represent the movement of the ground between the times each radar image was taken. Each colorful fringe on the European Space Agency’s Nepal interferogram reflects about 1 inch (2.8 centimeters) of vertical movement. The results will be refined in the coming weeks, with as scientists further analysize the images and additional data from satellites become available.

Headline:  Mortar Rounds on Golan Heights Were Fired by ISIS The two mortar rounds fired on Israel’s Golan Heights from Syria on Tuesday in estimated “spillover” were launched by the brutal Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization, which is the closest it’s ever been to the Israeli border with Syria. The ISIS-linked Jaish al-Jihad has captured the border town of Qahtaniya in southern Quneitra province on the Syrian Golan, thereby taking up its closest position to Israel yet at a distance of just 2.5 to 3 kilometers (1.5-1.8 miles), according to Walla!. Qahtaniya had been in the hands of the Free Syrian Army and the Al Qaeda affiliate Nusra Front which had kept the status quo vis-a-vis Israel, concentrating their efforts against the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad. Now that the town has fallen to ISIS, it may turn into a base of attacks against the Jewish state. On Tuesday morning Nusra Front launched an operation to try and recapture the town, with clashes between it and ISIS including machine gun fire, anti-tank missiles and mortar rounds. Iran OKs anti-Israel strategy Syrian Defense Minister General Fahd al-Freij arrived in Iran on Tuesday for a rare two-day visit, the first since civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, and was reportedly told by his Iranian backers to attack Israel. Al-Freij was told by senior Iranian sources that Syria and Iran’s terror proxy in Lebanon, Hezbollah, need to open a war front against Israel on the Golan Heights, according to the Hebrew-language Channel 10. Iran told the Syrian defense minister to stir up conflict against Israel on the Golan, with the Islamic republic apparently unperturbed by the significant damage the move will cause to the Syrian regime, given that its goal is to expand its regional hegemony at all costs. The Golan has been heating up with four terrorists eliminated on Sunday while placing an explosive on the Israeli border, and a day later stray mortar shells struck from Syria, as Al-Qaeda affiliate Nusra Front and Islamic State (ISIS) fight on the Syrian side, right on Israel’s doorstep. In a press conference between al-Freij and his Iranian counterpart, the two said in a joint statement, “Syria, Iran and the axis of resistance will not allow enemies to achieve their goals in the region, and harm Syria and its firm position. Iran unreservedly supports Syria, and continues its strategic relations with it.” April 29, 2015

Headline: Gaza rally for Palestinian unity ends in scuffles A Palestinian unity rally attended by hundreds in Gaza on Wednesday ended in scuffles that showed the depth of divisions delaying reconciliation and recovery from a devastating war. Hamas Islamists, in control of Gaza since seizing the territory from the Western-backed Fatah movement in 2007, had given the green light for the gathering organized by university student groups with rival political affiliations. Waving Palestinian flags, the students called on Hamas and Fatah, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, to resolve differences plaguing the national unity government they formed last year. The two rival factions have failed to agree on control of Gaza’s border crossings. That dispute has delayed the flow of vital reconstruction aid after last summer’s 50-day war with Israel as well as the allocation of government ministries and salary payments for Hamas-hired civil servants. After violence broke out at Wednesday’s rally, in a Gaza neighborhood badly damaged during battles in July and August, demonstrators and Hamas gave conflicting accounts of the fracas. A Fatah loyalist accused Hamas of sending club-wielding men in civilian clothes into the crowd to attack rival student groups as uniformed police stood by. Several local journalists said they had also been assaulted by plain-clothed security men. “We were chanting slogans calling for an end to the division, urging reconstruction, but Hamas accused us of trying to politicize the rally,” the Fatah demonstrator said. Eyad al-Bozom, spokesman of the Hamas-led Interior Ministry, said demonstrators had been fighting among themselves and police stepped in to separate them. April 29, 2015

Headline: IDF training to retake Gaza in possible future round with Hamas Assessing that Hamas will continue to rule the Gaza Strip for the foreseeable future, the IDF is training for the possible reconquering of the entire coastal Palestinian territory in a future confrontation with the Islamic organization, the Times of Israel has learned. Despite the harsh blow Hamas and Islamic Jihad sustained in Operation Protective Edge last July and August, Israel’s military command is convinced that another round of fighting between Israel and Gaza is only a matter of time. The Israeli leadership sees no prospect of the Palestinian Authority gaining control of the Strip, as it continues to demand, and would prefer to face a weakened Hamas than the anarchy of unruly organizations, some of which harbor extremist Islamist ideologies. At least 15 people were killed in heavy fighting between Houthi fighters and tribesmen in the oil-producing Marib province in central Yemen, tribal and medical sources said on Tuesday, as Saudi-led air strikes against the Iran-allied militia continued. At least 15 people were killed in the district of Sirwah and around Marib city, the sources said, as tribesmen allied with Hadi tried to stop Houthis and troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh from advancing on the provincial capital. The Houthis say their advance on Marib is to flush out militants belonging to Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the most active branches of the Sunni Muslim militant network and an enemy of the Shiite Houthis. Headline: Exclusive: Saudi Arabia trains Yemeni tribal fighters in war against Houthis – sources

Houthi rebels’ tanks and sniper fire killed at least 12 civilians overnight in Yemen’s Aden as they advanced toward the center of the city, residents said, and a Saudi-led coalition airdropped arms to anti-Houthi fighters in the city of Taiz. Fighting was still raging in the Khor Maksar district of Aden, seen as the main bulwark against the Houthis, early on Wednesday. Residents and city officials said the group shelled government buildings and residential neighborhoods controlled by their armed opponents, and dozens of families had fled. “The world, the coalition and the United Nations need to step in urgently to save our neighborhood, which has truly become a disaster area after this indiscriminate shelling,” resident Ali Mohammed Yahya said. Several Arab air strikes pounded Houthi positions in the city’s suburbs, residents said. About 200 km (120 miles) to the north, Arab aircraft dropped weapons for tribal and Islamist militiamen fighting the Houthis in the city of Taiz, where they have been battling the group with heavy artillery in city streets for days.

Headline: Iranian Plane Breaches Saudi No-Fly Zone in Yemen

Headline: Coalition jets bomb Sanaa airport to stop Iranian plane

An Iranian civilian plane breached the Saudi-led Arab coalition’s no-fly zone in Yemen, leading coalition forces to bomb a runway at the Sana’a airport on Tuesday to prevent it from landing. The no-fly zone has been in place since Operation Decisive Storm – meant to weaken via airstrikes the Iran-backed Shi’ite Houthi militia that seized power in Yemen – began on March 25, reports Al Arabiya. The incident is particularly concerning given the high likelihood that Iranian planes will provide weapons and support to the Houthis, given that it has backed the group in their push to conquer Yemen. While the Saudi operation was declared completed last Tuesday, it has morphed into a new phase termed Operation Restoration of Hope, as the Saudi-led military intervention continues. “Iranian actions towards Yemen are irresponsible. Defying the no-fly zone doesn’t serve the interest of Yemenis,” Saudi operation spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ahmed Asiri told Al Arabiya. Asiri said the plane did not follow orders to stop at the Bisha airport in Saudi Arabia for inspection prior to arriving in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a. “We reiterated several times that humanitarian efforts need to be coordination with the coalition first,” said the general. “The runway has been bombarded and it will now take time to fix, this is Iran’s responsibility as it defied several warning calls we made.” April 29, 2015

Syria Headline:     FSA aims to cut Damascus-Quneitra highway

The Free Syrian Army has opened a new front in southern Syria with an ambitious operation aimed at cutting the highway running southwest from Damascus to the Quneitra region near the Israeli border. The FSA’s First Army, a member of the Southern Front coalition of rebels, announced Monday that it had launched the “Battle of the Cutting of Joints” to seize the town of Sasa, which lies approximately 15 kilometers northeast of the Golan demarcation line between Syria and Israel. “The battle began on Monday morning with preliminary shelling of the Syrian army’s 68th Brigade [base] and the nearby Maqrousa area,” a source in the First Army told the opposition Siraj Press outlet.   The source added that “fierce clashes between the First Army and Assad’s forces had taken place close to the Military Intelligence branch in Sasa, as well as some other areas of the village.” The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, in turn, reported that fighting took place in the Sasa area between pro-regime forces on one hand and Islamist battalions and other rebels on the other. Meanwhile, First Army spokesperson Maher Elali elaborated to the anti-regime Smart News that the rebels had fired mortars and artillery on the Military Intelligence branch and 68th Brigade base in Sasa in addition to National Defense Force militiamen stationed in Maqrousa.  “The operation aims to relieve pressure on fighters engaged in the battle to liberate the 137th Regiment [base in Khan al-Shih],” he added. Syria Headline:    Syrian rebels combat ISIS and regime forces in Qalamoun The Syrian regime forces of “Brigade 20″ bombarded the city of Jairud in eastern Qalamoun with heavy artillery and targeted the area around the national hospital, causing the death of 12 people and the injury of dozens others, most of whom are in critical conditions, local activists reported on Tuesday. Local activists told ARA News that the pro-regime helicopters dropped several barrel bombs on the city of Zabadani, as well as targeting the Jairud Kalamoon area with artillery from the security centers on the western and eastern areas of Qalamoun. Speaking to ARA News on the phone, Ahmad Shami, a civil rights activist, said that on Monday the city of Zabadani saw artillery bombardment from the regime-held checkpoints of Hawarat, Ain Ramle and Biqqin plant, coinciding with sporadic shooting that continued for hours.  “The regime-held checkpoints of Sindiyan, Jirjaniya and the People’s Committees in the Mamoora neighborhood targeted the city of Zabadani with artillery,” Shami added, pointing out that the Lebanese army also attacked Jroud Qalamoun and Jroud Arsal with artillery fire from army centers based in the Tel Hamra and Ras Baalbek areas. In a related development, the clashes continued between the FSA rebels (backed by the al-Nusra Front) and the pro-regime forces (supported by the Lebanese militia of Hezbollah and the National Defense force) in the Jairud Qalamoun area, FSA sources reported. Iraq Headline:   Iraq Headline: Iraq’s Prime Minister comes under Attack by Political Rivals

Iraq’s Prime Minister (PM) Haidar al-Abadi and Defense Minister Khalid al-Ubaidi came under increasing political pressure from former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s allies and select Shi’a militia leaders this week. Pro-Maliki social media levied criticisms in posts between April 24 and April 27, 2015. ISIS’s successful attack against an Iraqi Army outpost in eastern Anbar provided the proximate cause for the criticism, allowing political opponents to target Abadi and Ubaidi for what they described as poor performance of the government in managing the security portfolio. ISIS’s recent gain in Anbar, while tactically important, is still relatively small given the overall success of the Iraqi Security Forces operation that cleared ISIS from Tikrit. It nevertheless showed that ground ISF units in Anbar are arrayed to address various high priorities such as the defense of Ramadi, preventing them from launching a successful ground rescue operation. Shi’a political rivals are likely targeting Abadi not only to make political gains, but also because of his recent cooperation with the U.S., which angered politicians affiliated with Iranian-backed Iraqi Shi’a militias. Maliki has recently staged himself as a senior figure within the sphere of the militias by attending militia-sponsored events and funerals of senior militia figures. This outreach to the militias may indicate that he is setting conditions whereby he can break off militia-supportive elements of the Shi’a coalition that supports the current PM and challenge current Prime Minister Abadi, who is a member of his own Dawa party. These events may increase political and social tension in Baghdad and Iraq’s Shi’a provinces at a vulnerable time. April 28, 2015

Kurdish Headline: Iraqi Cleric Warns US Congress Against Recognising Kurds, Sunnis as “separate countries”

Influential Iraqi Shia cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr, has warned United States Congress against passing a bill recognizing the Sunnis and Kurds in Iraq as separate countries. Al-Sadr said on Wednesday that if the bill is passed, Iraq will no longer be a safe place for the US, and its interests will become the target of attacks by the Iraqis who will never accept the “division of their country.” “We are obliged to lift the freeze on our military wing … and begin hitting US interests in Iraq and outside it,” said Sadr, who once led the powerful Mahdi Army and still enjoys huge influence among the Shia population. The draft of the US annual defense bill, which was released on April 27 by the House Armed Services Committee, urges the US government to recognize separate Kurdish and Sunni states and provide them with at least 25 percent of the $715 million aid money planned to be given to the Iraqi government to help it fight the Islamic State militants. The draft bill also says the figure could even amount to 60 percent of the money, about $429 million. The bill mandates that “the Kurdish Peshmerga, the Sunni tribal security forces with a national security mission, and the Iraqi Sunni National Guard be deemed a country,” adding that doing so “would allow these security forces to directly receive assistance from the United States.” April 29, 2015

Headline:   Libya’s Tripoli parties reject ‘shocking’ UN peace draft

A draft proposal put forth by UN envoy Bernardino Leon to end Libya’s political crisis has invited criticism from political parties in the capital Tripoli. The Tripoli-based parliament said that it rejects the proposal by the UN envoy. The General National Congress (GNC) “completely rejects the draft proposal as it does not provide an objective, comprehensive, balanced solution,” parliament spokesman Omar Humaidan said at a press conference on Tuesday. Unveiled by Leon on Monday, the draft calls for a two-year transitional period and for all parties to respect the results of a parliamentary election. Its fourth governing principle states that the House of Representatives (HoR), the internationally-recognised parliament that is locked in a struggle for legitimacy with the GNC, is “the only legislative authority in the country”. The HoR was ruled unconstitutional by Libya’s High Court last November, after a tense session in the GNC-controlled capital Tripoli. The draft does not mention the GNC. The proposal also calls for extending the mandate of the country’s constitution-drafting assembly. In his cover letter, Leon acknowledged that the draft would not “meet all the expectations of all the parties”. April 29, 2015

Nigeria’s army has rescued 200 girls and 93 women during a military operation to wrest back the Sambisa Forest from the Boko Haram Islamist terrorist group, Reuters reported on Tuesday. “Troops this afternoon rescued 200 girls and 93 women from Sambisa Forest. Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls near the northern village of Chibok in April 2014, causing an international outcry. Diplomats and intelligence officials say they believed at least some of the girls were being held in the forest about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Chibok, although U.S. reconnaissance drones failed to find them. Headline: 3 Killed in Attack in Mali After Rebels Vow Action

Two soldiers and a civilian were killed on Wednesday when gunmen attacked the village of Goundam in northern Mali, an army spokesman and local residents said, amid rising tensions after two days of clashes between pro- and anti-government militia. The separatist rebel umbrella organization, the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), said in a statement on Tuesday it would defend itself after the Gatia militia favorable to Bamako seized the northern town of Menaka. “At around 5:30 am this morning, armed men attacked the village of Goundam,” Souleymane Maiga, head of the army’s information office, said. “The provisional toll is three dead including the head of the national guard unit, his deputy, and acivilian.” One local resident said the gunmen entered the town firing their weapons and went to the headquarters of the national guard detachment, where they shot its head, his deputy and his nephew. Residents said the attackers appeared to be separatist rebels but it was not immediately possible to confirm this. The violence came after separatist fighters shot at U.N.peacekeepers outside the town of Timbuktu in northern Mali onTuesday. The CMA claimed the attack. April 29, 2015

Headline: Whooping-cough cases rise sharply in Washington state

Whooping cough is continuing to rise in Washington state, particularly among babies too young for vaccination and teens with waning protection, health officials reported Tuesday. As of April 25, there were 387 cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in Washington, compared with 85 reported cases at the same time last year. Twenty-five of those cases were in babies younger than 1. Of those, six babies were hospitalized, including five aged 3 months or younger. Pertussis is known for causing uncontrollable coughing that can make it hard to breathe and cause a characteristic “whooping” sound in someone struggling to get air. It can be dangerous, even deadly, for babies and young children. This is the first sharp rise in cases since a 2012 epidemic that saw nearly 5,000 cases in Washington. April 28, 2015

Make no mistake about our resolve.” “While there are many things we can endure, redefining marriage is so fundamental to the natural order and the common good that this is the line we must draw and one we cannot and will not cross,” the pledge states. The signees are a who’s who of religious leaders including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, National Religious Broadcasters president Jerry Johnson, Pastor John Hagee, and Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse. The pledge was co-drafted by Deacon Keith Fournier, a Catholic deacon, and Mat Staver, the founder of Liberty Counsel. Also involved in the document were Rick Scarborough, the president of Vision America Action and James Dobson, the founder of Family Talk Radio. April 29, 2015

Headline:   Lava Lake On Kilauea Volcano Is Seriously Close To Overflowing A lava lake on Hawaii’s Big Island is mere feet from overflowing. On Tuesday morning, the lava’s surface briefly reached the lake’s rim, the highest it’s been since the current summit eruption began in 2008. It has since returned to about 10 feet below the rim. “Magma is rising up into the lava lake from a magma chamber a mile or so beneath the summit of Kilauea volcano,” research geologist Matthew Patrick told The Huffington Post. According to Patrick, an overflow is a definite possibility because Kilauea has been consistently inflating for the past week, meaning that magma keeps flowing into the lake from an underground chamber below. In the event of an overflow, the lava would stay within Halemaumau Crater, the larger crater in the floor of which the lava lake sits, so it would pose no safety threat. But visitors to Volcanoes National Park would get quite a display. April 28, 2015

Supplies are running thin and aftershocks have strained nerves in ruined Kathmandu, home to some 2.5 million before it was shattered by Saturday’s 7.8 magnitude quake. Desperate to leave, thousands of people began gathering from before dawn outside the main bus station after the government promised to lay on special services to far-flung rural areas. But when the buses failed to materialise, anger began surging and scuffles broke out between the crowds and riot police who were sent in to try to contain the situation near parliament. Some protesters forced a truck carrying drinking water off the road and climbed on top of it, throwing the bottles to the crowd. “We’ve been left starving in the cold and the best this government can give us is this queue. Why are they so slow?” demanded Rajana as she lined up along with thousands of others for a bus to her home village. Headline:   PLO’s Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday to redefine relations with Israel

The PLO’s Central Council is due to meet Wednesday to redefine its relationship and its economic and security cooperation with Israel, the Palestinian chief negotiator said Sunday.
Saeb Erekat, in a meeting with members of the Foreign Press Association in Jerusalem, used almost identical language to what was said a month earlier by Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi. Erekat said Israel has stopped its obligations and has abrogated all the agreements that it has with the Palestinian Authority.
He said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is undermining Palestinian moderates because he doesn’t want a Palestinian state in which people can live in dignity and peace.
Erekat said Israel is committing crimes against the Palestinian people. He suggested that a legal expert from an Israeli university write a paper on the subject and give it to Netanyahu.
“We will hold the Israeli prime minister accountable for any crimes committed against Palestinians,” Erekat said. “It will not be cost-free legally.”

Headline:  Israeli Airstrike Kills 4 Suspected Syrians Militants in Golan Heights

Headline: : Hezbollah terror attack on Golan stokes face-off between Israel and the Syrian-Hizballah alliance

Israeli forces on Sunday killed four suspected militants whom it says were caught trying to plant a bomb in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israeli military officials say they launched an airstrike on the militants near the town of Majdal Shams, close to the Israeli-Syrian border. The officials say the four were targeting Israeli troops. The military said it carried out the strike after troops saw ‘‘a group of armed terrorists’’ approach the border with an explosive intended to target Israeli troops. It said that Israeli aircraft ‘‘targeted the squad, preventing the attack.’’ It did not offer any casualty figure for the strike. Iran’s state-run, English-language satellite news channel Press TV later reported four people had been killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Golan Heights, without elaborating. On Twitter, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, sent messages commending the soldiers involved in the strike. ‘‘Any attempt to harm our soldiers and civilians will be met with a determined response like the military action tonight that thwarted a terror attack,’’ Netanyahu said.

Headline:    US Expects Israeli Pledge to Two-States to Continue

Headline: : PLO: No negotiations after Netanyahu’s pre-election refusal of Palestinian state

US Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman had a harsh message for American Jewish leaders on Monday. Sherman warned them that if the new Israeli government does not demonstrate a strong commitment to the two-state solution, the US will have trouble assisting it in efforts to halt international initiatives at the United Nations. Speaking at a conference of the Reform Movement in the United States, Sherman insisted the US government has “always had Israel’s back in the international arena, even when it meant standing alone. This will continue to be the case.” But, she continued, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s actions prior to elections “raised questions about his commitment to the two-state solution.” Sherman refers to a series of interviews the Prime Minister gave days before general elections on March 17, in which he vowed not to establish a Palestinian state. Netanyahu later backtracked on his statements. “We will be watching very closely to see what happens on this [Palestinian] issue after the new government is formed,” Sherman added.

Headline:  Islamic State suicide bombers kill Iraqi soldiers at Jordanian border

Suicide car bombings by Islamic State militants at an Iraq-Jordan border crossing left at least five Iraqi soldiers dead Saturday and crippled the movement of trucks between the two Middle East nations. Three attacks were carried out by suicide bombers from Senegal, Belgium and France on the Iraqi side of the Trebil border crossing, according to a statement from Islamic State in Iraq’s western Anbar province. The militant group said 40 soldiers were killed in the checkpoint attack, about 300 miles west of Baghdad, and the Iraqi army headquarters there was destroyed. Images of the attack on social media showed plumes of smoke rising over a desolate collection of trailer trucks and buildings. Iraqi government forces disputed that account, saying five soldiers were killed and 10 wounded, according to the Jordanian state news agency Petra. Jordan’s Interior Ministry, in a statement released Saturday, said the attack “led to technical failures and stopped movement toward Jordan’s Al Karama border crossing,” less than two miles away.

Headline:  Saudi national guards reach Yemen border area as fighting continues

Air raids, naval shelling and ground fighting shook Yemen on Sunday in some of the most widespread combat since a Saudi-led alliance intervened last month against Iranian-allied Houthi militia who have seized large tracts of the country. There were at least five air strikes on military positions and an area near the presidential palace compound in the Houthi-held capital Sanaa at dawn on Sunday, while warships pounded an area near the port of the southern city of Aden, residents said. “The explosions were so big they shook the house, waking us and our kids up. Life has really become unbearable in this city,” a Sanaa resident who gave his name as Jamal told Reuters. The strikes on Sanaa were the first since the Saudi-led coalition said last week it was scaling back a campaign against the Houthis. But the air raids soon resumed as the Houthis’ nationwide gains had not been notably rolled back, and there has been no visible progress toward peace talks.

Headline:  ISIS Says It’s Established A Caliphate In Yemen

Yemen is in the midst of bloody civil war between Iran-affiliated Houthi rebels and forces associated with President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, but now a new threat has struck the war-torn country. In a video posted online Friday, the Iraq-based Islamic State states it is establishing a new arm of the organization in Yemen. Declaring its official presence in the country, the Sunni Islamic State threatens to “cut the throats” of the Shitte Houthi rebels. The nine-minute video depicts around two dozen ISIS terrorists in full military gear training in a desert area, which they claim is near Yemen’s capital Sanaa, news site RT reported. Terrorists carry AK-47s, heavy machine guns and RPGs, which they fire in the clip. Afterwards, a man, who appears to be the commander of the group, sticks the notorious black ISIS flag into the sand and announces that “soldiers of the Caliphate” have arrived to “cut the throats” of the Houthis. “We have come to Yemen to slaughter you, with men hungry for your blood to avenge the Sunnis and take back the land they have occupied,” the ISIS commander continued. He then called on all Sunni men in Yemen to join Islamic State’s battle against the Houthis.

Islamist rebels in Syria have taken over the key north-western town of Jisr al-Shughur, activists say. It was the last major town under government control in Idlib province. Correspondents say it may give rebels a route to the ruling elite’s heartland. The Islamist forces, including the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front, began the assault on Thursday. State media said the army had redeployed outside the town “to avoid civilian casualties”. They quoted a military official as saying that, before withdrawing, troops had engaged in fierce fighting with “armed terrorist groups” who arrived in large numbers from the Turkish border.

Air strikes on a marketplace Sunday killed at least 40 civilians, including women and children, as Syrian forces stepped up attacks on rebels a day after losing a key border town. Syria Headline:   Islamist Rebels Capture Army Base in Syria’s Idlib Province

A coalition of Islamist rebels seized an army base in northwestern Syria at dawn on Monday after a suicide bomber from al-Qaida’s Nusra Front drove a truck packed with explosives into the compound and blew it up. The capture, reported by a rebel commander and social media videos showing militants inside the base, brought the coalition closer to seizing most of Idlib province and moving toward Latakia, the ancestral home of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The army had been using the Qarmeed camp to shell rebel-held towns and villages in the strategic agricultural region bordering Turkey. Controlling it should help the rebels tighten their siege on the major Mastouma army base nearby. Syrian state media said the army killed scores of Nusra fighters and dozens of Islamist suicide bombers from Russia’s Chechnya region in fighting near the base, but did not say the compound had fallen to the militants. “A truck with two tons of explosives penetrated one of the entrances of the camp that made it easier to take over the camp,” Sheik Husam Abu Bakr, a rebel commander from Ahrar al-Sham movement said via Skype.

Syria Headline:  Syrian airstrikes hit Islamist headquarters in Hasakah, casualties reported

ISIS troops have launched an offensive on the northeastern provincial capital of Hasakeh, which the regime controls in an uneasy power-sharing agreement with Kurdish forces. “Fierce clashes have remained ongoing between the Islamic State (ISIS) on one side and regime forces and pro-regime militants on the other, after a fierce attack launched by ISIS members from several fronts around the city of Hasakeh,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Monday. The monitoring group said that the ISIS assault came on the heels off a bombing attack that targeted one of the regime’s positions to the south of the city. “ISIS advanced in the area amid heavy exchanges of fire in which artillery shells, rockets and heavy machineguns were used by the two sides,” the report added. “News has emerged that regime forces summoned reinforcements to the area while ISIS positions south of Hasakeh and the combat zones were subjected to air strikes by regime warplanes.”

Iraq Headline:   Car Bombings in Iraq’s Capital Kill at Least 20 Civilians

A series of car bombings targeting busy commercial areas in Iraq’s capital killed at least 20 civilians Monday, officials said. The deadliest attack took place Monday night when a car bomb exploded on a commercial street in Baghdad’s western district of Mansour, killing 10 people and wounding 25, police said. Security forces sealed off the area, which is often packed with nighttime shoppers. At least 20 cars were set ablaze by the blast, which damaged several shops and restaurants. Police said four children were among the wounded. An hour later, a car bombing on a commercial street killed three people and wounded 12 in Baghdad’s Amil neighborhood, police said. Earlier Monday, another car bomb exploded in Baghdad’s Bayaa district near a real estate office in an area where dozens gather every day. A police official said that blast killed seven people and wounded at least 16. Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. Iraq Headline: Week of fighting in Iraq’s Ramadi kills 30 police: officer

A week of heavy fighting between security forces and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militant group in the Ramadi area of Anbar province killed 30 police, a top officer said on Monday. “The city of Ramadi witnessed heavy confrontations and fighting last week between security forces” and ISIS, Anbar police chief Staff Major General Kadhim al-Fahdawi said, putting the toll at 30 police killed and 100 wounded. Parts of the capital of Anbar province have been out of government control since early 2014, and ISIS seized more territory in the Ramadi area this month. Major attacks also hit other areas of Anbar last week, including three suicide bombings claimed by ISIS targeting the Iraqi side of the Trebil border crossing with Jordan on Saturday that officials said killed seven people. And 13 soldiers, among them two senior officers, were killed in a bombing and clashes east of Ramadi on Friday, Defense Minister Khalid al-Obeidi said. Obeidi on Sunday rejected reports that more than 100 soldiers were killed in the violence, which was originally said to have taken place in the Nadhim al-Tharthar area, but which he said was actually 30 kilometers (18 miles) to the south.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) says its observers have witnessed heavy shelling in the volatile eastern Ukrainian village of Shyrokyne despite a ceasefire. “On April 26, the SMM (Special Monitoring Mission) observed what it assessed to be the most intense shelling in Shyrokyne… since fighting began in the area in mid-February 2015,” the OSCE said in a report on Monday. “For the last 12 hours, and ongoing at the time of this report, the SMM has observed sporadic to continuous exchanges of fire involving small arms, machine gun, rocket propelled grenade and automatic grenade launcher,” the report added. The OSCE also reported the movement of tanks and armored personnel carriers through the areas controlled by pro-Russia forces fighting the Ukrainian government in the east. According to the report, OSCE monitors were forced on Sunday to leave their post near the government-controlled village of Berdianske, west of Shyrokyne, following two explosions 300 meters away.

Headline:  Head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard accuses Saudi Arabia of ‘treachery,’ compares it to Israel

The head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on Monday accused Saudi Arabia of treachery against the Islamic world and compared the kingdom to Israel, the official IRNA news agency reported. “Today, the treacherous Saudis are following in Israel’s footsteps,” Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari was quoted as saying. “Saudi Arabia is shamelessly and disgracefully bombing and mass killing a nation that is fighting against the arrogant system,” or world powers, he said. He was apparently referring to Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition has been waging a month-long air campaign against Iran-supported rebels, known as Houthis. Iran has provided the Houthis with political and humanitarian support, but denies arming them. The Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, last year, and Yemen’s internationally recognized president has fled the country. Iranian leaders have repeatedly criticized the airstrikes and said the Saudi-led campaign is doomed to fail. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei went so far as to call the airstrikes in Yemen “genocide.” Jafari said the Saudi monarchy is facing collapse and called on his government to adopt a tougher stance toward Riyadh.

Thousands of Taliban fighters attacked Afghan forces in the northern province of Kunduz (spelled Konduz in map above) in an effort to seize control of the provincial capital and outlying districts. Afghan officials have said that several areas of Kunduz are now under the jihadist group’s control. Taliban forces assaulted the districts of Imam Sahib, Aliabad, and Qala-i-Zal as well as areas in Kunduz city over the weekend. The chief of Kunduz’s provincial council claimed that “about 2,000 heavily-armed insurgents attacked” the district center in Imam Sahib, and that contact with more than 500 Afghan security personnel in the district has been lost, Pajhwok Afghan News reported. The governor of Kunduz conceded that the Taliban have taken control of several villages and that security forces have abandoned at least three outposts. The governor also claimed that the Taliban organized the offensive with fighters from other Afghan provinces, and six foreign fighters – four Tajiks and two “Chechens” – were among 40 Taliban fighters killed during the fighting, TOLOnews reported. Security forces are said to have beat back the Taliban assault in Qala-i-Zal district, but fighting is ongoing in Imam Sahib, Aliabad, and the Gor Tepa area in Kunduz city. The security situation has deteriorated in Kunduz since last year. The head of the provincial council estimated that more than 65 percent of the province is under Taliban control. The Taliban touted the Kunduz offensive on its official propaganda website, Voice of Jihad. The jihadist group claimed that its fighters “seized as many as 21 combat posts and captured 6 tanks including 2 vehicles filled with heavy and small arms and ammunition tanks in the limits of Kunduz city.” The Taliban also claimed it killed or wounded “several dozens of the enemy soldiers, police and Arbakis [tribal militiamen],” including “top-ranking officers and commanders.” The group also stated it captured 55 security personnel, “mostly Arbakis.” The Taliban’s claims cannot be independently confirmed. Afghan officials claimed 16 security personnel were killed or wounded during the fighting. The Kunduz assault is the first major push by the Taliban under its newly-announced spring offensive, which the group has dubbed “Azm” (resolve or determination).

Headline:  Sudan accuses U.N. peacekeepers of killing 7 civilians in Darfur

Sudan has accused a peacekeeping force in Darfur of killing seven civilians in three separate incidents last week, threatening to exacerbate the government’s strained relations with the international mission. The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) denied the allegations, saying the peacekeepers had responded in self-defence to two attacks on April 23 and 24, which it said had left four assailants dead and six peacekeepers wounded. UNAMID has been deployed in Darfur since 2007 with a mandate to stem violence against civilians in a conflict that has seen the International Criminal Court issue an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir on charges of war crimes and genocide. Sudan asked UNAMID late last year to prepare to leave amid a dispute over attempts by the mission to investigate an alleged mass rape by Sudanese soldiers in the Darfur town of Tabit. The government denies any wrongdoing by the soldiers.

Headline:  Islamic State kills five journalists working for Libyan TV station-army official

Islamic State militants have slit the throats of five journalists working for a Libyan TV station in the eastern part of the country, an army commander said on Monday. The reporters had been missing since August, when they left the eastern city of Tobruk after covering the inauguration of the country’s elected parliament to travel to Benghazi. Their route took them through Derna, a militant Islamist hotspot. Faraj al-Barassi, a district army commander in eastern Libya, said militants loyal to Islamic State were responsible for killing the journalists, whose bodies were found outside the eastern city of Bayda. “Five bodies with slit throats were found today in the Green Mountain forests,” Barrasi told Reuters, referring to a sparsely populated area east of Benghazi. He did not say when the five journalists were believed to have been killed. The reporters – four Libyans and one Egyptian – had been working for Barqa TV, an eastern television supporting federalism for eastern Libya, other journalists said.

Armenia Armenia

Headline:    Countries on Russia’s southern flank ready for war

Increased hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan, two former Soviet republics in western Asia, are imminent, analysts say. An increase in violence since the start of the year centers on Nagorno-Karabakh, a de facto independent republic with an Armenian majority but recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan. An upcoming election there could trigger an increase in violence, a Royal Bank of Scotland report indicated. There have been 31 confirmed deaths along trench-style warfare lines in the area, the Azerbaijani Caspian defense Studies Institute reported. The election May 3 “could further escalate the tensions, increasing the risks of a wider confrontation over the disputed territory,” Anna Tokar, a Royal Bank of Scotland analyst wrote on April 16, “putting the oil and gas pipelines in the South Caucasus in danger.”

Headline:  Seven Officers injured, one unresponsive in Baltimore Riot

More than 1,000 protesters have marched in Baltimore over the death of a black man in police custody a week ago. But after hours of peaceful demonstrations, some protesters smashed police windows and shop fronts. At least 12 people were arrested. Freddie Gray was arrested by police on 12 April and then suffered spinal injuries leading to death a week later. His twin sister, Fredricka Gray, appealed for calm, saying her family wanted the violence to stop. As clashes began on Saturday evening, she said: “Freddie Gray would not want this.” The Baltimore Mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, speaking alongside Ms Gray, said she was “profoundly disappointed” by the unrest, blaming it on “agitators”.

Headline:  6 killed in Burundi anti-president protests

At least six people have been killed in street clashes between the police and civilians demonstrating against the Burundian president’s bid for a third term, a spokesman for the Burundi Red Cross said on Monday, as hundreds continued to gather in the streets of the capital despite a heavy military presence. Three people were killed in clashes with the police on Sunday and three others died of their injuries overnight, Alexis Manirakiza told The Associated Press by phone from Bujumbura, Burundi’s capital. Seven more people had been wounded, he said. Bujumbura has been hit by protests since Sunday after the ruling party nominated President Pierre Nkurunziza for another term, which many say is unconstitutional.
Hundreds of demonstrators erected barricades and set tires alight in Bujumbura on Monday. The military was deployed on the streets after violent clashes on Sunday.

Headline:  Boko Haram reportedly massacred local residents on island in Lake Chad

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen shot dead 21 people in northeast Nigeria who were trying to return home to recover abandoned food supplies, a local official and a victim’s relative said Monday. “The men, 21 of them, were stopped at Bultaram (village) by gunmen we believe are Boko Haram who shot them dead,” said Baba Nuhu, an official with the Gujba local government in Yobe state. Nuhu and Haruna Maram, the brother of one of the victims, spoke to AFP from Yobe’s capital Damaturu, where many Gujba residents have fled to seek refuge from Boko Haram violence. “My brother and 20 others wanted to bring back their grains to augment their lean food supplies to feed their families,” Maram said. “Unfortunately, they were killed by (the) same Boko Haram we ran away from.”

Headline:   25 Killed, Hundreds Injured in Powerful Pakistan Windstorm

At least 25 people were killed and hundreds more injured Sunday when devastating windstorm coupled with heavy rain and hail hit Peshawar in northwest Pakistan. And officials are worried there may be many more casualties. 25 dead and around more than 160 injured. “We received 25 dead and more than 160 injured so far. But injured are still being shifted to the hospital and I am afraid death toll may rise,” said Jamil Shah, spokesman for Lady Reading Hospital, the largest public hospital in the area. About 60 injured people had been brought to two other hospitals in Peshawar. Some of the injured were said to be in critical condition. Many other injured people have yet to be taken to hospitals because of road conditions, officials said.

Headline:  Rescuers struggle to reach many in Nepal quake, fear worst

Headline:  Death toll rises to 3,800 after Nepal quake

The death toll from Nepal’s earthquake soared past 3,300 Monday, and how much higher it would rise depended largely on the condition of vulnerable mountain villages that rescue workers were still struggling to reach two days after the disaster. Reports received so far by aid groups suggest that many communities perched on mountainsides are devastated or struggling to cope. Landslides hindered rescue teams that tried to use mountain trails to reach those in need, said Prakash Subedi, chief district official in the Gorkha region, where the quake was centered. Matt Darvas, a member of the aid group World Vision, said it is likely that many communities can be reached only by helicopter. “Villages like this are routinely affected by landslides, and it’s not uncommon for entire villages of 200, 300, up to 1,000 people to be completely buried by rock falls,” Darvas said.

Headline:  Chile’s Calbuco volcano covers town of Ensenada in ash

People living in the vicinity of the Calbuco volcano in Chile are trying to save their homes and their livestock after tonnes of ash rained down following two volcanic eruptions. The roofs of a number of homes and businesses collapsed under the weight of the ash and residents feared for their sheep and cows. Soldiers have been deployed to help with the clean-up. The authorities have warned of the possibility of further eruptions.  They also said that should it rain, the ash could mix with debris to create dangerous mudflows. The Calbuco volcano in southern Chile erupted twice last week, forcing the evacuation of more than 6,000 people. Chilean authorities said on Saturday that the volcano had spewed out an estimated 210 million cubic metres (7,420 million cubic feet) of ash.
