Headline:   PA Approaches Hamas, Islamic Jihad After Israeli Elections

The Palestinian Authority (PA) leadership has taken steps to “punish” Israel for the results of the 20th Knesset elections, releasing a document condemning the results in general and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in particular. On Thursday, the Palestine Liberation Organization (the terror group behind the PA; headed by Mahmoud Abbas – ed.) met in Ramallah and made the following decisions:

• To condemn Netanyahu as “racist”, particularly after controversial remarks he made on the day of elections last week whereby he called on Israelis to vote to counteract a large voter turnout from the Israeli Arab population and after he briefly claimed that he would not continue to pursue the establishment of a Palestinian state;
• To continue to deepen Israel’s political and economic isolation, to expand the recognition of “the State of Palestine” and to gain support in the United Nations (UN) Security Council and other international institutions on the basis of 1949 Armistice lines with Jerusalem as its capital;
•  To call upon the Palestinian people to keep to the “Palestinian National Plan” and cling to their land;
• To complete the certification process for the PLO and the heads of various security agencies to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) and then to file “war crimes” complaints against Israel for building in Jewish-owned areas of Judea and Samaria (i.e. Area C) and to for retaliating to Hamas rocket fire in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge;
• To launch talks in Gaza with Hamas and Islamic Jihad to implement the existing agreements regarding national reconciliation and preparing presidential and parliamentary elections for the “unity government.” Hamas responded to the elections last week by pledging to recommit to reconciliation with Fatah, in order to better secure “Palestinian rights.”

Headline:       Israeli military prepares for possible violent uprising in West Bank

The Israel Defense Forces is preparing for the possibility of a violent uprising on the West Bank in the coming months. Still, the army does not necessarily expect a violent escalation in the wake of the results of the Israeli election, and they are aware that the Palestinians are imposing restraint in an attempt to prevent an uprising. The Central Command is presently completing a series of maneuvers and training exercises designed to prepare the forces for a scenario of confrontation with the Palestinians. In this context maneuvers were carried out in the Central Command, in the divisions and the brigades as well as training exercises in regular army and reserve units. In the past months there has been a large gap between the tense atmosphere in diplomatic relations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, in light of the Palestinian request to join the International Criminal Court in The Hague and the Israeli reaction of freezing the tax money to which the Palestinians are entitled, and the situation on the ground.

Headline:     Jordan says it will help train Syrian rebels to fight ISIS

Jordan says it will help train Syrian rebels as part of its fight against the extremist ISIS, which controls parts of neighboring Syria and Iraq. The training is part of a regional effort also involving Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar as hosts of training sites. The U.S. Congress has passed legislation providing $500 million for training about 5,000 rebels over the next year. Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani said Monday that Jordan will train Syrians to “defeat the terrorism that has been killing their sons and daughters.” He would not say if training has already begun or where it would take place.

Arab countries will take necessary measures to protect the region against “aggression” by Yemen’s Iranian-allied Houthi group if a peaceful solution cannot be found to that country’s turmoil, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said on Monday Asked if Riyadh might offer military aid to Hadi, whom it recognizes as Yemen’s legitimate ruler, Prince Saud said: “Certainly, countries in the region and the Arab world will take the necessary measures to protect the region from aggression.” Speaking at a joint news conference with British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, Prince Saud repeated an invitation to all Yemen’s rival factions, including the Houthis, to attend peace talks in the kingdom. Hammond said Britain and its allies were discussing their response.

Headline: Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan sign agreement on Nile dam

Leaders from Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan signed a cooperation deal on Monday over a giant Ethiopian hydroelectric dam on a tributary of the river Nile, in a bid to ease tensions over regional water supplies. The leaders said the “declaration of principles” would pave the way for further diplomatic cooperation on the Grand Renaissance Dam, which has stirred fears of a regional resource conflict. No details of the agreement were immediately released. Egypt, which relies almost exclusively on the Nile for farming, industry and drinking water, has sought assurances that the dam will not significantly cut the river’s flow to its rapidly growing population. Ethiopia, the source of the Blue Nile which joins the White Nile in Khartoum and runs on to Egypt, says the dam will not disrupt the river’s flow and hopes the project will transform it into a power hub for the electricity-hungry region. Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn told the gathering in Khartoum: “I reaffirm that Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam will not cause any harm to downstream countries.”

In three places in the bible it says that the Nile River will dry up: Isaiah 19:5, Ezekiel 30:12, and Zechariah 10:11.  There are several ways that a river could be dried up. God could directly dry it. Man could alter its course via use of a dam or lock system. Or time could make the river dry up or divert, and its course would be lost forever as the terrain naturally changed. This agreement has brought together the Ezekiel War countries of ancient CUSH (Ethiopia and Sudan). With all the wars and conflicts going on in the world, we constantly read of water shortages. With what we KNOW will happen, as stated by God’s Word, can you imagine the absolute disaster when the Nile is completely dry.

Syria Headline:    Islamic State moves west to attack Syrian army in Homs

Islamic State fighters attacked a military airport in Syria‘s Homs province on Monday as they pressed a westward offensive against government strongholds, a monitoring group said. Forays by Islamic State, which is strongest in the northeast and east, into the provinces of Homs, Hama and even Damascus pose a fresh challenge for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Syria’s army has seized control of a swathe of territory from Damascus through the cities of Homs and Hama to the western coast by defeating other, less powerful militias including rebels fighting under the banner of the Free Syrian Army. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the violence through a network of sources in the country, said Islamic State attacked a military airport in Tadmur, a town in Homs province, early on Monday. Syrian officials could not immediately be reached for comment, and the fighting was not reported on state media. Observatory head Rami Abdulrahman said 74 soldiers in Hama province had been killed by Islamic State, which he speculated launched both attacks to raise morale after losses to Kurdish forces in the northeast. The offensive followed a three-day battle that erupted on Friday further west in Hama around Sheikh Hilal village, the Observatory said. Islamic State was trying to cut the road from Hama to Aleppo, once Syria’s most populous city, it added.

Syria Headline:   Syrian Rebels Shell City of Aleppo, Killing at Least 13

Syrian rebels fired mortar rounds into government-held parts of the northern city of Aleppo during rush hour Monday, killing 13 people and wounding dozens, state-run TV and an activist group said. The violence was the latest in the flare-up in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and once its commercial hub. Last month, Syrian troops and pro-government militias launched an offensive in an attempt to besiege rebel-held parts of the city and since then, intense fighting has been taking place on the city’s outskirts. On Monday, state TV aired footage from Aleppo showing the wounded and the dead as they were being brought to a hospital in the city. It said the shelling killed 13 and wounded as many as 30, some of whom suffered serious injuries. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group that has a network on the ground, gave a similar casualty toll.

Syria Headline:   Jihadist Syrian Rebels Capture Regime Helicopter, Take Hostages

Islamist rebels captured four crew members of a regime helicopter which crashed in the Idlib province of northwest Syria on Sunday, while a fifth serviceman was killed, a monitor said, reported AFP. “A regime helicopter was forced to land in the region of Jabal al-Zawiya in the northwest, which is a bastion of (Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate) Al-Nusra Front,” Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told the news agency. “Four of the crew were captured and a fifth man was killed by armed men in a neighboring village,” he added. Abdel Rahman said the Al-Nusra Front held two of the servicemen, including the helicopter’s pilot. Official Al-Nusra Front accounts on Twitter published photos and videos with the caption “Helicopter pilot in the hands of jihadists,” according to AFP. The images depict the bandaged pilot sitting in front of Al-Nusra Front’s official flag.

Iraq Headline:   Baghdad bombings kill 13; wound 22

Iraqi police officials say multiple bombings in Baghdad killed at least 13 people and wounded 22. The deadliest bombing struck a busy commercial street Monday in the Habibiya section of Baghdad’s Sadr City, killing at least 9 people and wounding 22, officials said. Earlier Monday in northwestern Baghdad, police say a bomb detonated near an intelligence branch of the Interior Ministry, killing four people, including two children. Hospital officials corroborated the casualty figures. All officials spoke anonymously as they are not authorized to brief media.

Headline:   Islamic State posts kill list with purported addresses of U.S. military personnel

A group affiliated with the Islamic State published a list of addresses purportedly belonging to about 100 U.S. service members late Friday night, calling for their beheadings. The self-identified “Islamic State Hacking Division” claimed to have obtained the information by hacking into military servers, databases and emails, The Blaze reported Saturday. The online document contains names and photos along with some of the addresses. “[W]e have decided to leak 100 addresses so that our brothers residing in America can deal with you,” the group warned, The Blaze reported. “Kill them in their own lands, behead them in their own homes, stab them to death as they walk their streets thinking that they are safe,” the “Islamic State Hacking Division” added. A spokesperson for the Department of Defense told the website that the U.S. military was investigating the matter but could not confirm that the list was authentic.

Russia threatened to aim nuclear missiles at Danish warships if Denmark joins NATO’s missile defense system, in comments Copenhagen called unacceptable and NATO said would not contribute to peace. Denmark said in August it would contribute radar capacity on some of its warships to the missile shield, which the Western alliance says is designed to protect members from missile launches from countries like Iran. Moscow opposes the system, arguing that it could reduce the effectiveness of its own nuclear arsenal, leading to a new Cold War-style arms race. In an interview in the newspaper Jyllands-Posten, the Russian ambassador to Denmark, Mikhail Vanin, said he did not think Danes fully understood the consequences of joining the program. “If that happens, Danish warships will be targets for Russian nuclear missiles,” Vanin told the newspaper. Asked to respond, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said Denmark was a staunch member of the alliance and NATO would defend all allies against any threat.

A veto-proof, bipartisan majority of House lawmakers have signed an open letter to President Barack Obama warning him that any nuclear deal with Iran will effectively require congressional approval for implementation. A group of bipartisan senators have penned a bill mandating that any deal be reviewed and approved by Congress, but the House letter notes that lawmakers have another way to halt an agreement — by refusing to roll back sanctions. “Should an agreement with Iran be reached, permanent sanctions relief from congressionally-mandated sanctions would require new legislation. In reviewing such an agreement, Congress must be convinced that its terms foreclose any pathway to a bomb, and only then will Congress be able to consider permanent sanctions relief,” they write.

And barring major breakthroughs in the region, spring will be difficult,” he told a press briefing at the presidential palace, several hours before leaving on a four-day official visit to the United States. Ghani, who came to power in September, said he had not asked for any specific aid from the United States nor any changes to planned troop withdrawals. “What I’ll be explaining to the Congress of the United States is what we’re doing. What we’re underlining is both the nature of the threat and what we’re doing with the existing resources and capabilities,” he said. Ghani will be travelling to the US along with Chief Executive Officer Dr Abdullah Abdullah. They are due to meet with President Barack Obama at the White House on March 24.

Headline:   Eight killed in air strike as Libya government aims to recapture capital

Eight civilians were killed in an air strike near Tripoli on Monday, the U.S. ambassador said, as Libya’s internationally recognized government pressed on with an assault to recapture the capital it abandoned to a rival faction last year. On Friday, the eastern-based government announced an assault to recapture Tripoli, even as the sides are both attending U.N.-hosted peace talks in Morocco. Western countries fear a total collapse of central authority in a country of 6 million people a short sail away from Europe. Islamist militants, including fighters who proclaim loyalty to al Qaeda or Islamic State, have taken advantage of the chaos to establish bases, attack oil fields and enter central regions. Forces loyal to the eastern government claimed responsibility for the air strike in Tarhouna, a town south of Tripoli, saying they had hit a military base. They also said they shot down a jet flown by Libya’s Dawn. “Terrible news today from Tarhouna where eight innocent displaced Tawergha killed in air strikes,” U.S. Ambassador Deborah Jones said in a tweet, referring to members of a minority group, thousands of whom were displaced after Gaddafi fell. “This violence serves no one’s interests,” said Jones, who is based outside Libya since most diplomats were evacuated from Tripoli last year. Headline:   Will ISIS Take The Credit For The Tunisia Museum Attack?

A daily news bulletin from ISIS suggests they may claim credit for Wednesday’s attack in Tunisia’s Bardo museum which left 23 people, including 18 foreign tourists, dead. It’s still not clear which group, if any, the gunmen were connected to, but the Islamic State appears poised to establish that the perpetrators were operatives loyal to them. Thursday’s official “daily news bulletin” from ISIS featured information about the attack in Tunis and praised the perpetrators. The news bulletin usually focuses exclusively on attacks and battle plans by the Islamic State, not any other terrorist groups. Featuring the Tunis attack in their bulletin implies that it was, at least in part, orchestrated by ISIS.

Headline:   Algeria temporarily evacuates Turkish workers after IS threat

Algerian authorities temporarily evacuated nearly 100 Turkish construction workers from a roadway project east of Algiers as a precaution after a threat from militants affiliated with Islamic State, security sources said on Monday. The measure underscores growing concern over militant attacks in North Africa following last week’s Bardo museum massacre of foreign tourists in Tunisia and Islamic State’s growing presence in neighboring Libya. The Turkish workers were evacuated for 24 hours as a “preventative” measure but returned to the Kabilye region east of the capital on Monday. A French tourist was kidnapped and beheaded in the area by Islamic State loyalists last year. “Things are under control, evacuation was just a preventive action, and they have resumed work this afternoon,” a security source who asked not to be named told Reuters. The Algerian leader of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is still in hiding in the eastern mountains. But a splinter group, the Caliphate Soldiers, declaring affiliation with Islamic State has also emerged. Last year, they kidnapped Frenchman Herve Gourdel and executed him.

Headline: Boko Haram crisis: At least 70 bodies found in Nigerian town

At least 70 bodies have been found dumped outside the town of Damasak in north-eastern Nigeria, after it was recaptured from Boko Haram militants. The victims appear to have been killed some time ago, as the bodies were partially mummified by the desert air. Troops from Niger and Chad seized Damasak on Saturday, ending months of control by the Islamist militants. Earlier, Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan predicted Boko Haram would lose all territory within a month. “They are getting weaker and weaker by the day,” he told the BBC on Friday. Damasak is a trading town in Borno state near Niger’s border and is about 200km (120 miles) from the state’s main city of Maiduguri.

Headline:  Yemen crisis: Islamic State claims Sanaa mosque attacks

Islamic State (IS) say its militants carried out suicide bombings on two mosques in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, which killed at least 137 people. The attacks are the first claimed by IS – a Sunni group – since it set up a branch in Yemen in November. Both mosques were used mainly by supporters of the Zaidi Shia-led Houthi rebel movement, which controls Sanaa. Four suicide bombers attacked the Badr mosque, in the south of Sanaa, and the al-Hashoosh mosque, in the north of the capital, as worshippers gathered for Friday prayers. At the Badr mosque, one bomber entered the building and detonated his explosives while other people were caught by the second bomber near the main gates. Prominent Houthi cleric Al-Murtada bin Zayd al-Mahatwari, the imam of the Badr mosque, was among those killed, local media reported. Two more bombers attacked the al-Hashoosh mosque, with one detonating explosives near the entrance and the other running into the mosque itself. “Blood was running like a river,” said survivor Mohammed al-Ansi.

Al Qaeda and ISIS are dividing the spoils of another country between them, as the last few American special forces flee Yemen to avoid being captured by the horde. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu warned about the dangerous spread of Al Qaeda and ISIS, and the vulnerability of other nations in the Middle East when speaking to the U.S. Congress earlier this month. A group of 100 US personnel withdrew from the southern Al-Anad air base on Friday as Al Qaeda terrorists seized a nearby southern city. The move came a day after 137 people were killed and hundreds more were wounded in suicide bombing attacks at Shia Houthi mosques in the capital city of Sana’a. Responsibility for the attacks was claimed by Daesh, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria terror group also known as ISIS.

Headline: Outbreak of Swine Flu Kills 30 in Turkey

30 people have died in Turkey this year from the H1N1 virus – more commonly known as swine flu. Turkey’s health minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu, told local media in Ankara that an additional five people have died from the influenza B virus and four others from the H3N2 strain in the 2014-2015 flu season, which typically runs from November to April. He confirmed that hospitals have been provided with 250,000 additional boxes of medicine to combat the various strains of the virus but said there is no need for additional measures at present as the peak period is over. “We have collected a total of 4,300 samples from patients, out of which 366 were cases of H1N1, known as the swine flu,” said Muezzinoglu. He added that the number of fatalities has increased in the past 15-20 days, but that this flu season overall has not been as intense as the 2013-2014 period.

Elcho Island has undergone a battering as tropical cyclone Nathan intensified off the Northern Territory coast. The Bureau of Meteorology said Nathan was estimated to be about 50km north/north-west of Galiwinku with wind gusts up to 140km/h late on Sunday, and its destructive core of sustained winds of about 120km/h continued to affect Elcho Island for several hours into Monday. Nathan was moving north-west at 12km/h and was set to increase in intensity to a category three level over open water, as it moved along the coast on Monday, before turning south-west towards land later in the night. Elcho Island was severely damaged by cyclone Lam in late February, and a storm tide, with damaging waves and dangerous flooding, was also expected between Elcho Island and Cape Shield.

Instead of using its veto to block United Nations Security Council pressure on Israel in peace negotiations with the Palestinians, the administration is now reportedly considering endorsing this effort. It is hard to overstate the seriousness of such a policy change.

Along with the world beginning to come against Israel we are still in the midst of seeing the leading nations trying to push Israel in to some peace agreement even if it is a forced one in which Israel does not want.  

Following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s election victory UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called Netanyahu on Friday and urged him to renew Israel’s commitment to a “two-state solution” to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to clarify on Thursday comments made during his election campaign that a Palestinian state would not emerge under his tenure.

Jewish Third Temple is going to be rebuilt

Headline:    Holy Altar constructed for 3rd Jewish Temple

The Temple Institute in Jerusalem has announced that it has finished building an altar suitable for the Temple service. The altar, which took several years to build, can be operational at little more than a moment’s notice, reported Matzav Haruach magazine. The Temple Institute is committed to preparing all the necessary clothing and tools for the rebuilt Holy Temple in Jerusalem. In addition, the institute operates an educational center for visitors and a preparatory training program for members of the priestly family who wish to be ready to serve as soon as the Temple is rebuilt. The altar is a central component to the Biblical sacrificial service. In fact, there were separate altars for the incense and for other sacrifices. The larger altar sat in the outer courtyard of the Tabernacle, and later the Temple. It was approximately five meters (16 feet) tall and 16 meters (52.5 feet) wide, with four “horns”, or raised corners, and a ramp. The altar prepared by the Temple Institute, under the direction of architect Rabbi Shmuel Balsam, follows this requirement. It is constructed instead from bricks fired at roughly 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,832 degrees Fahrenheit), to withstand the immense heat of the Temple’s eternal flame and the weight of the sacrificial animals. Its measurements conform to the interpretation of Maimonides. What makes the altar so unique is that it can be disassembled and reassembled easily, allowing it to be transported quickly and efficiently from its current location, on display at the institute, to the Temple Mount when the time comes. It was inaugurated in December 2014 and is now ready for use.

Headline:   IAF jets scrambled in North after Syrian warplanes spotted near Lebanon border

Israel Air Force fighter jets were scrambled in the skies over the North on Saturday morning after higher-than-usual movement of Syrian aircraft was detected near the Syrian-Lebanese border. The government of President Bashar Assad has used aircraft in its efforts to quell a rebellion launched by a coalition of secular and religious Sunnis seeking to install a new regime in Damascus. Israeli warplanes often fly sorties over southern Lebanon. Lebanese press has been known to report that Israeli air force jets are visible in the Beka’a valley.
The IAF flyovers come against the backdrop of increasing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah following last week’s attack in the Golan Heights against a convoy of Hezbollah and Iranian military personnel.

Headline:   Netanyahu says no Palestinian state if re-elected

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, trailing in opinion polls, told Israeli voters on Monday that a Palestinian state will not be established if he is reelected and promised that he would build thousands of settler homes in Arab east Jerusalem. In an interview published Monday, Netanyahu told the daily Maariv newspaper that withdrawing from occupied areas to make way for a Palestinian state would only ensure that territory will be taken over by Islamic extremists. When asked if that means a Palestinian state will not be established if he is elected, Netanyahu said “indeed.” In a separate occasion, while speaking on a whistle-stop tour of Har Homa, a contentious settlement neighborhood of annexed east Jerusalem, Netanyahu vowed he would never allow the Palestinians to establish a capital in the city’s eastern sector. “I won’t let that happen. My friends and I in Likud will preserve the unity of Jerusalem,” he said of his ruling rightwing party, vowing to prevent any future division of the city by building thousands of new settler homes. “We will continue to build in Jerusalem, we will add thousands of housing units, and in the face of all the (international) pressure, we will persist and continue to develop our eternal capital,” he added.

Headline: US shuts down Saudi embassy amid security fears

The US embassy in the Saudi capital Riyadh has cancelled all consular services for Sunday and Monday due to “heightened security concerns”. In a statement, the embassy said consular services in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran would not be available. It urged US citizens to take extra precautions when travelling in Saudi Arabia and to keep a low profile. On Friday, the embassy warned that Western oil workers could be the target of militant attacks. It said it had information that “individuals associated with a terrorist organisation” could be targeting people working in the oil-rich Eastern Province.

A senior Saudi prince told the BBC Monday that if Iran is granted the right to enrich uranium – Saudi Arabia will demand the same right. “I’ve always said whatever comes out of these talks, we will want the same,” said Prince Turki al-Faisal, who has previously served as head of Saudi intelligence and Riyadh’s ambassador to Washington and London. While he is no longer a government official, al-Faisal’s words are widely understood as representing the views of the Al Saud ruling family. “So if Iran has the ability to enrich uranium to whatever level, it’s not just Saudi Arabia that’s going to ask for that,” stated. “The whole world will be an open door to go that route without any inhibition, and that’s my main objection to this P5+1 [the six world powers] process.” US Secretary of state John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, have resumed nuclear talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne to try to narrow the gaps before a March 31 deadline set for a framework agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, and a June 30 deadline for a final accord.

Headline: Egypt unveils plans to build new capital east of Cairo

The Egyptian government has announced plans to build a new capital to the east of the present one, Cairo. Housing Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the project would cost $45bn (£30bn) and take five to seven years to complete. He said the aim was to ease congestion and overpopulation in Cairo over the next 40 years. The announcement was made at an investment conference that aims to revive the Egyptian economy. The gathering, in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, has attracted pledges worth $12bn (£8bn) in aid and investment from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Mr Madbouly said the population of greater Cairo, estimated at about 18 million, was expected to double within 40 years. The Egyptian parliament and its government departments and ministries, as well as foreign embassies, would move to the new metropolis, he said. “We are talking about a world capital,” he added.

Syria Headline:     Regime forces hit Damascus countryside, 20 civilians reported dead

At least 20 people were killed and hundreds others wounded on Sunday after pro-Syrian regime warplanes bombarded the residential neighborhoods in the city of Duma in the eastern Ghouta of Damascus, locals reported. Medical sources from field hospitals in the city reported that victims included women and children, adding that the airstrikes caused a mass destruction of several residential buildings. “Attempts to drag the dead bodies from the rubble continued,” said a member of the medical staff in Duma field hospital. “There were more than 150 wounded in critical conditions, amid a severe shortage of medical supplies due to the blockade imposed by the Syrian regime forces on the entire Eastern Ghouta,” the source told ARA News under the condition of anonymity. Speaking to ARA News in Duma, Mahmoud Fadel, a fighter in the ranks of the Army of Islam (linked to the Free Syrian Army “FSA”), said that the Syrian regime used vacuum-bombs during the airstrikes. “The regime committs massacres against civilians while the international community remains watching!”

Iraq Headline: Tikrit Offensive On Hold So Civilians Can Flee

The tomb of Iraq’s former dictator Saddam Hussein was virtually leveled in heavy clashes between the Islamic State (ISIS) group and Iraqi forces in a fight for control of the city of Tikrit, The Associated Press (AP) reported on Sunday. Fighting intensified to the north and south of Saddam Hussein’s hometown Sunday as Iraqi security forces vowed to reach the center of Tikrit within 48 hours, the news agency said. AP video from the village of Ouja, just south of Tikrit, shows all that remains of Hussein’s once-lavish tomb are the support columns that held up the roof. As well, poster-sized pictures of Saddam, which once covered the mausoleum, are now nowhere to be seen amid the mountains of concrete rubble. Instead, Shiite militia flags and photos of militia leaders mark the predominantly Sunni village, including that of Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the powerful Iranian general advising Iraqi Shiite militias on the battlefield. “This is one of the areas where ISIS militants massed the most because Saddam’s grave is here,” Captain Yasser Nu’ma, an official with the Shiite militias, was quoted as having said. “The ISIS militants’ set an ambush for us by planting bombs around” the tomb, he added.

ISIS spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani detailed the terror group’s plans to conquer Portugal, Spain, Paris and Rome in an almost 30-minute audio message to the West, “So They Kill And Are Killed,” which references a Koran verse. “We won the day Europe and U.S. dreamt of reclaiming Tal Hamis, Mosul, Sinjar, Tikrit, Qaim, Derna, Tell Abyad, and more,” stated the ISIS mouthpiece, as transcribed by Ynet News. “We — with Allah’s help — want Paris, before Rome and Islamic Iberia and after we blow up the White House, Big Ben, and the Eiffel Tower before Paris, and Rome,” al-Adnani warned. “The Muslims will return to power, to be the vanguard and lead in every place.” The Islamic State’s al-Adnani gave Jews and Christians the ultimatum that they could either “convert to Islam or pay the ultimate price when you armies are expelled from Muhammad’s peninsula, from Jerusalem, and all Muslim lands,” Ynet news translated. He warned Christians and Jews they would soon be unable to stop the jihadi advance to the caliphate, saying, “The Jews and the Crusaders are scared and weak.”

Russian leader Vladimir Putin, in a pre-filmed interview, has said he was ready to use nuclear weapons if the West had tried to stop him seizing Crimea. He made the comment in a documentary, “Crimea. The Path to the Motherland”, aired on Russian state TV on Sunday (15 March). When asked if he would have put his nuclear arsenal on alert, he responded: “We were ready to do that … That’s why I think no one wanted to start a world conflict”. He said he also deployed high-tech coastal defence missiles, which can be seen from space, to deter outside intervention. He added that he warned his Western counterparts he is prepared to go to war: “I spoke to colleagues and I told them that this is our historic territory, Russian people live there, they are in danger and we can’t abandon them. What do you want to fight for? You don’t know? We know. And we’re ready for that”. The film also revealed that he sent Russian special forces to the Ukrainian peninsula prior to its so-called referendum on independence, which took place on 16 March last year. His remarks are not the first instance of nuclear sabre-rattling in the crisis.

The first clause demands a removal of all sanctions against Iran that were imposed by the United Nations (UN) Security Council, as part of implementing a nuclear deal. In the second clause, the Iranian parliament called for a preservation of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and rights to develop nuclear power according to article 4 of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Finally – and most significantly – the proposal delineates that if any of the obligations of the nuclear deal are breached, the deal will be considered null and void, and Iran will restart its uranium enrichment to the “level required by Iran’s needs.” Iran has been demanding to have 190,000 centrifuges, an amount allowing it to produce a full nuclear arsenal within weeks.

A ministry statement says Hafiz Wahidi and nine of his men were killed in the operation in Sangin district on Monday. Sangin is in the southern Helmand province, a Taliban heartland. The statement said Wahidi was the nephew and a successor to Abdul Rauf Khadim, a former Taliban commander who switched allegiance and aligned his followers with the Islamic State group, which is fighting in Iraq and Syria. Khadim, who had set up an IS recruiting network across southern Afghanistan, was killed in drone strike last month. Officials have voiced concern about the IS presence in Afghanistan though the group’s real strength here is unknown.

Their main base is in eastern Libya where the elected government and army have battled extremists for months. In February, a video was released appearing to show the beheadings of 21 Egyptian Christians kidnapped by IS militants in Sirte. Militia forces and the self-proclaimed government ruling western Libya deny IS has a significant presence in Libya, saying the fighters are former Gaddafi loyalists.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that after “more than 10 years of negotiations, we should seize this opportunity.” He will join the foreign ministers of France and Britain and Mogherini for talks in Brussels on Monday evening with their Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif. “There are areas where we’ve made progress, areas where we have yet to make any progress,” British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said. “But the fact that we’re all here talking shows the commitment on both sides to try to reach an agreement.”

The mediation, the sources said, was being made at the request of Saudi Arabia, which has been alarmed at the possibility of a power struggle in Yemen, something that might negatively affect the Gulf. The sources added that Meshaal enjoyed close ties with Yemen’s Muslim Brotherhood, and that his role as mediator was specifically requested by the Saudi monarch King Salman bin Abdulaziz, as well as other high-ranking Saudi officials. Father Savari Muthu, spokesman for the Delhi Catholic Archdiocese and a national Church organizer, said the government had not taken “concrete action to protect Christians. “We have to raise our voice against the atrocities. Christians will not tolerate this humiliation,” he said, joining critics who say Modi has not done enough to ensure religious harmony in a country with a history of inter-faith bloodshed. The motive for the assault and armed robbery in the eastern state of West Bengal on Saturday was not clear.

Headline:   Heat wave sets new temperature records across California

A March heat wave set new temperature records across California on Saturday, with more sweltering conditions in the forecast for Sunday. Lifeguards reported big crowds at local beaches, even though the temperatures along the coast were in the high 80s and low 90s. Downtown L.A., Long Beach, San Diego and other spots set new temperature records for the date — for the second day in a row. Downtown L.A. was at 93 degrees by 1 p.m. Temperarures in inland valley areas were also high, including 94 in San Gabriel and 92 in Van Nuys. The heart extended to Northern California, where San Francisco, Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto set a new record for the day of 84 degrees. The heat is caused by a high-pressure system moving across the region, according to the National Weather Service. With temperatures 20 degrees above normal, the heat this weekend will break records that have stood for more than 60 years, said meteorologist Stuart Seto. On Saturday, highs will hit the 90s inland and the 80s on the coast. “These are record-breaking temperatures,” Seto said.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in the New Britain Region, Papua New Guinea at 11.00am Beijing time (0300 GMT) on Monday, the Hong Kong Observatory said. The epicenter was near 4.2 degrees south latitude and 152.1 degrees east longitude, about 790 kilometers northeast of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, said the observatory. In an earlier bulletin from the US Geological Survey, the magnitude of the quake was put at 5.9 and the depth at 198.87 km.

Headline:  Vanuatu Faces Lack of Food, Disease Outbreak

Relief workers said Monday the conditions in Vanuatu in the wake of Cyclone Pam are among the worst they have ever seen and the environment is rife for spreading disease. “I don’t think there has ever been destruction on this scale in one place,” said Aurelia Balpe, head of the Pacific Office of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. “Friday night was the first emergency with the arrival of Cyclone Pam, disease will be the second emergency without clean water, sanitation and hygiene provision,” Oxfam Vanuatu Director Colin Collett van Rooyen said. “We need food for the coming weeks,” said Red Cross Vanuatu CEO Jacqueline de Gaillarde. Officials in Vanuatu had still not made contact with outlying islands by Monday night and were struggling to determine the scale of devastation from the cyclone, which tore through the nation early Saturday. Authorities have confirmed at least eight deaths and more than 20 injuries. Footage filmed this week shows armed and masked Hamas fighters hard at work preparing for a possible future escalation with Israel; ‘This phenomenon did not exist before Operation Protective Edge, now they’re building outposts and training facilities right under our noses,’ area resident says. Hamas is preparing for the next round of fighting against Israel by building fortifications near the Israel-Gaza border, video footage filmed this week not far from the border fence shows. Armed and masked, Hamas fighters are seen in the video digging and setting up outposts and training facilities only dozens of meters from the border fence. At some point, two armed and masked Hamas fighters are seen helping a man descend – possibly into the ground. The video was not filmed covertly, or with advanced technology used by the IDF’s top intelligence units – it was filmed with a regular video camera from inside Israel, several dozen meters from the houses of Netiv HaAsara, north of the Gaza Strip. The Hamas fighters are seen operating where the settlements of Elei Sinai and Nisanit once were, before they were evacuated as part of the Gaza disengagement. The residents of Netiv HaAsara are accustomed to seeing Hamas men setting up outposts and levees near the border fence, but in recent days the men working have been armed and masked, with Hamas flags flying visibly overhead.

The talks are likely to focus on the economic crisis facing the PA and could be a four-way meeting which would also include Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a State Department official was quoted by AFP as having said. “We continue to be concerned about the PA,” the official told reporters travelling with Kerry on his plane to the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. “It’s really part of the continuous, ongoing conversation we’re having with the critical stakeholders here,” the official said, asking not to be named. Kerry is due to arrive Friday at the resort to attend an international economic conference, set to burnish Sisi’s global credentials. Last month, Kerry voiced fears that the PA may be teetering on the brink of collapse because of a lack of funding, as Israel withholds taxes and donor aid stalls.

Five days before Israel’s snap election, people who have seen Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu close up say he looks weary and, behind his controlled façade, shocked to discover that his Likud party faces the real possibility of being thrown out of office on March 17. At a meeting of the party faithful, Wednesday, March 11,  he warned – not once but again and again – that if they don’t get a move on fast, Israel could be stuck with “Bougie and Tzipi”  [Yitzhak Herzog and Tzipi Livni co-leaders of the opposition Zionist Camp] as prime ministers. The former Labor party keeps on overtaking Likud in opinion polls – not by much but consistently. When the figures hit 24-25 Knesset seats to his party’s 21, Netanyahu finally bestirred himself to go stumping across the country. He hasn’t yet lost the race for another term in the prime minister’s office, but he will need to pull some rabbits out of his hat and aces from his sleeve if he wants to be chosen by the president as the most credible candidate for forming the next government. Herzog may get there first. This campaign has held a couple more surprises and others may be in store in the short time remaining.

Israeli security officials have recommended building a barrier along the border with Jordan — the Jewish state’s only frontier that does not yet feature a fence. “Security officials recommended the construction of a security barrier to protect the new airport which will be built at Timna” some 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of resort city Eilat, an army spokeswoman said, without elaborating. Work has already begun on the new airport near Eilat, which lies across the Jordanian border from the port city of Aqaba. Newspaper Haaretz reported that the planned 30-kilometre (19-mile) barrier was designed both to protect the airport and to foil attempts by would-be “jihadist infiltrators” from Jordan, which is home to some extremist sympathisers and a number of radical clerics. It was unclear whether the government would approve construction of the fence.

Hezbollah’s deputy chief Sheikh Naim Qassem Friday blasted the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS, accusing Washington and partner countries of creating the militant group. “We hear the world wants to confront ISIS because it represents takfiri terrorism. Who created ISIS? Those who want to fight [ISIS] are the ones who raised and funded ISIS,” Qassem told a local prize distributing ceremony. His comments came in a statement released by Hezbollah Friday. Qassem said the U.S. has provided ISIS with weapons and training “starting from Afghanistan all the way to Syria and Iraq.” Gulf countries, on the other hand, according to the Hezbollah official, “paid a lot of money to make them [ISIS] strong in order to [carry out acts of] sabotage in their name and on behalf of America.” “And Israel opened hospitals [to ISIS casualties]; and contact between takfiris in Syria’s Qunaitra and Israel is constantly ongoing, uninterrupted, because they are part of this scheme,” Qassem said. “Therefore, those from the [U.S.-led] coalition who claim to be combating the takfiri scheme are not honest.” He said the world today was witnessing a confrontation between two schemes: the resistance scheme which is honest, sincere and divine; and the scheme led by the U.S. and Israel, which seeks to plunge men into destruction at all intellectual, political and economic levels.

Hezbollah is reportedly mobilizing and preparing to carry out a wide-range attack on more than one axis in the rebel-held areas in the Syrian Qalamoun region and on Lebanon’s Eastern Mountain range. A source close to Hizbullah revealed in comments to the Italian news agency Adnkronos (AKI) that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Syrian regime forces will back the party’s assault on militant posts. The source said Hizbullah had waged a stake that the harshness of the winter in Qalamoun, strategically located on the Lebanese border, would limit the movement of the Islamist fighters and reduce their areas of control. However, the failure of the party’s expectation compelled Hizbullah to stage the wide-area operation to force the rebels to retreat. “The party’s strategy during winter failed to block the key rebel supply line,” the source told the news agency, fearing that the rebels have stepped up their readiness for a battle in the spring.

Anger is building in Egypt’s government at being treated with hostility by its traditional ally in Washington while coping with a drumbeat of terror incidents targeting security forces in Sinai and foreign business interests here. Asked on March 9 about the shifting U.S. policy in the region, Egyptian President Abdul Fatah Sisi responded: “Difficult question.” After a long silence, he added: ““The suspending of U.S. equipment and arms was an indicator for the public that the United States is not standing by the Egyptians.” Although the Obama administration recently agreed to provide the Egyptian Air Force with Apache attack helicopters, it has blocked most military purchases since Muslim Brotherhood Leader Mohammed Morsi was overthown by Sisi in a coup that met with widespread popular support in Egypt. On Monday, terror attacks in Alexandria targeted an elementary school and three businesses including two banks. Security analyst Janet Basurto attributed some of the attacks to the desire to inhibit foreign investments in Egypt as well as punish police forces. Syria Headline:    Eighty percent of all Syria’s lights have gone out due to war

Eighty-three percent of all the lights in Syria have gone out since the start of the conflict four years ago, a research report based on satellite images said on Thursday. More than 200,000 people have been killed and nearly four million have fled the country according to the United Nations. The uprising started in 2011 with a pro-democracy movement and a government crackdown and has since spiralled into a civil war. A coalition of 130 humanitarian and human rights organisations, calling themselves WithSyria, in coordination with scientists based at Wuhan University in China, found that the worst hit area was Aleppo province. Much of Aleppo city has been destroyed by Syrian air force helicopters dropping barrel bombs, crudely-made explosives that can flatten whole neighbourhoods. The research showed a 97 percent decline in light in Aleppo province. Raqqa province, where the hard-line Islamic State insurgent group has taken control, saw a decline in light by 96 percent, it said. The southern province of Damascus, mostly held by the government, saw the smallest decline in light, by 33 percent, the research showed.

More than 50 regime soldiers and Islamist fighters were killed as they battled over a strategic hilltop in Syrian President Bashar Assad’s home province, an activist group said Thursday. Government forces clashed with Al-Qaeda-affiliated militants backed by other armed Islamist groups in a village in Latakia province in the northwest. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighting broke out Wednesday and raged through the night in Jabal al-Akrad district, a rare rebel stronghold in the province, which is the heartland of the ruling Assad clan. Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate the Nusra Front and its allies were seeking to recapture the village of Dourin, which overlooks their positions in one of the district’s main towns, Salma. They lost the village to Assad’s forces last week after holding it for more than a year. “The clashes Wednesday led to 50 dead from both sides. There are many casualties because the fighters are facing off directly,” Observatory head Rami Abdel-Rahman said.

Syria Headline:     Nusra Front pulls out of Damascus suburb

Militants from the Nusra Front have vacated a suburb of the Syrian capital in the wake of deadly clashes with residents and a local militia, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Thursday. The Britain-based group said that an “Islamist faction” was involved in the mediation efforts to secure the withdrawal by Nusra Front fighters from Beit Sahm. It came several days after an unspecified number of residents and fighters from the Nusra Front and the Sham al-Rasoul militia were killed in two days of running street battles. The tension erupted last week when hundreds of residents of Beit Sahm and nearby Babila staged a protest to demand the exit of the Nusra Front from the area. Pro-opposition media outlets said that among other things, the withdrawal of the Nusra Front could lead to the reopening of a regime-held humanitarian aid corridor.

Iraqi army forces and Shi’ite militias, with the help of Iranian Revolutionary Guards officers, continue their fight to liberate Tikrit from Islamic State (ISIS), according to local reports Friday. Iraqi officials explained that Iranian involvement in the region is deepening. Hadi al-Aamiri, leader of the “Badr” sect of the Iraqi parliament, said in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat Friday that the presence of Iranian advisers accompanying the Iraqi army is “a source of pride.” “Why is there some sensitivity with respect to the presence of Iranian consultants here, when it is known that there are currently more than four thousand American advisers in Iraq?” he asked. “The Iranian advisers accompany us on the battlefield and give us the best counseling, and we are proud of them, because they will help us to liberate the provinces of Nineveh and al-Anbar fully after we liberate Tikrit and Kirkuk,” he continued. “Those who speak against the Iranian advisers should thank and praise them – for without them and without Qasem Soleimani (commander of the Guard’s Quds force), Iraq would be under ISIS rule.” Meanwhile, Ali Younisi, Iranian President Hassan Rowhani’s adviser on Ethnic and Religious Minorities affairs, clarified a statement made Monday – “Baghdad is now capital of the Iranian empire” – saying Tehran never wants to damage its neighboring country’s sovereignty and independence, Al Alam website reported. Baghdad officials continue to express confidence they will soon completely retake the city, which has strategic and symbolic value, as the hometown of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. As many as 30,000 Iraqi troops and Iranian-backed Shi’ite militia members have surrounded the city and retaken several areas, though it remains unclear how far the forces have reached. The multi-front offensive, now in its second week, has been slowed by snipers and booby traps set by Islamic State fighters. On Friday, six soldiers were reportedly killed in a suicide car bombing.

Iraq Headline: Islamic State Uses Chlorine Gas: Iraqi Official

An Iraqi official has revealed that Islamic State (IS) militants are resorting to using chlorine gas roadside IEDs in an effort to prevent the advances of Iraqi security forces against them.Iraqi officials have shown BBC footage, which they say proves Islamic State militants are using the gas in roadside attacks. The videos show bomb disposal teams carrying out controlled explosions, which send plumes of orange smoke into the air. The bombs contain small concentrations of a chemical agent and in open ground are unlikely to be lethal. Experts say they are designed to create fear rather than harm. There have been multiple reports that IS has been deploying chlorine gas since late last year, but Iraqi officials say the footage confirms its use. Haider Taher, from the Iraq Bomb Disposal Team, said troops have defused dozens of devices containing chlorine as part of the offensive against the militants. “They have resorted to this new method,” he said. “They’re putting chlorine inside these homemade roadside bombs, which is toxic for those that inhale it.”

Iraq Headline:   Foreign suicide bombers launch assault on Ramadi

The Islamic State utilized at least 13 suicide bombers yesterday in an attack on the city of Ramadi, the besieged capital of the western Iraqi province of Anbar. Many of these suicide bombers were foreigners, and included a Belgian, an Australian, a Chechen, an Uzbek, a Moroccan, a Tunisian, an Egyptian, and two Syrians. Iraqi officials have not disclosed the number of people killed in the suicide assault, but medical officials in the area told Reuters that five were killed. This toll has not been confirmed and could likely be much higher. The attacks came from the directions of Albu Aytha, to the northeast of Ramadi, and Albu Diab, which is northwest of the city center, according to Shafaaq News. Iraqi officials said that security forces were able to repel the attack, and some sources claimed that Iraqi Security Forces and Sunni tribal fighters killed 41 Islamic State fighters. The number of Islamic State fighters killed during the attack on Ramadi could not be confirmed. One suicide bomber was able to detonate on a bridge in the western portion the city, Reuters reported. The Islamic State has released several images from the attack, including one that shows a suicide bomber detonating on the Japanese bridge in the city. Another photo set shows the results of the battle near the bridge, including the bodies of several Iraqi security personnel killed during the fighting. At least two US-supplied M113 armored personnel carriers were also captured. The assault near the bridge targeted the Iraqi Army’s 1st Division. Iraqi officials said that the Islamic State assaulted the 2nd regiment of the 1st Division, but the attack was repelled and no losses were reported. However, the pictures released by the Islamic State contradict these claims.

Kurdish Headline: ISIS attacks Kurdish headquarters in Kobane’s countryside

On Thursday, clashes continued between militant fighters of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) and the Kurdish joint forces (People’s Protection Units “YPG” and Peshmerga) in the southeastern countryside of Kobane in the province of Aleppo, northern Syria, military sources reported. Although airstrikes and military campaigns have killed several regional administrators and designated “governors,” the Islamic State has quickly replaced them and maintains its command-and-control capabilities. This assessment of progress against the Islamic State differs sharply from public statements by top Obama administration officials as recently as last month, including Secretary of State John Kerry and retired General John Allen, the president’s special coordinator for the coalition against the Islamic State. In February, Allen said that half the group’s leaders in Iraq had been killed.

Moreover, a five-day training program also began in Russia’s Sverdlovsk region, on the border of Europe and Asia, on Thursday where commanders of rocket forces in the Central Military District will be trained in using Iskander and Tochka systems, among others, Sputnik News reported. “On 19 training grounds located in the Southern, North Caucasian and Crimean Federal Districts, as well as Russian military bases in Armenia, South Ossetia an [sic] Abkhazia, artillery belonging to motorized infantry brigades, formations and military bases of coastal troops will perfect their skills and their units’ military coordination,” the Southern Military District’s press service said, according to Sputnik News. The annexation of Crimea by Russia last year triggered violence in the region, leading to clashes between government forces and the pro-Russian rebels.

Headline: 3 killed, 7 injured in NW Pakistan attack

At least three people, including two civilians, have been killed and seven others injured when unidentified gunmen launched an attack on a security checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan.  Police officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a group of militants aboard a vehicle opened fire at the checkpoint in the Gora Qabristan area of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province and situated 150 kilometers (93 miles) west of the capital, Islamabad, at around 7 a.m. local time (0200 GMT) on Thursday. Iceland definitively dropped its EU membership bid on Thursday (12 March), nearly six years after having made the demand. “The government of Iceland has no intentions to resume accession talks”, country’s foreign affair minister, Gunnar Sveinsson, wrote in a letter to enlargement commissioner Johannes Hahn and Latvia’s foreign affairs minister Edgars Rinkevics. The US Federal Reserve has rejected the capital plans of US branches of Germany’s Deutsche Bank and Spain’s Banco Santander in a test designed to gauge whether America’s biggest banks are prepared to withstand a hypothetical financial crisis. The 31 institutions that were tested this year hold $14 trillion in assets as of the fourth quarter of 2014, or about 80 percent of domestic bank holdings in the US, the US Federal Reserve said Wednesday. The two banks were the only foreign banks out of the 31 major banks audited to fail the second part of the stress tests. America’s largest bank, Bank of America, only got a conditional pass, and will need to submit a new capital plan by September. Given the historic low temperatures and snowfalls that pummeled the eastern U.S. this winter, it might be easy to overlook how devastating California’s winter was as well. As our “wet” season draws to a close, it is clear that the paltry rain and snowfall have done almost nothing to alleviate epic drought conditions. January was the driest in California since record-keeping began in 1895. Groundwater and snowpack levels are at all-time lows. We’re not just up a creek without a paddle in California, we’re losing the creek too. Data from NASA satellites show that the total amount of water stored in the Sacramento and San Joaquin river basins — that is, all of the snow, river and reservoir water, water in soils and groundwater combined — was 34 million acre-feet below normal in 2014. That loss is nearly 1.5 times the capacity of Lake Mead, America’s largest reservoir. Statewide, we’ve been dropping more than 12 million acre-feet of total water yearly since 2011. Roughly two-thirds of these losses are attributable to groundwater pumping for agricultural irrigation in the Central Valley. Farmers have little choice but to pump more groundwater during droughts, especially when their surface water allocations have been slashed 80% to 100%. But these pumping rates are excessive and unsustainable. Wells are running dry. In some areas of the Central Valley, the land is sinking by one foot or more per year.

Russian scientists have now discovered seven giant craters in remote Siberia, a geologist told AFP on Thursday, adding that the mysterious phenomenon was believed to be linked to climate change. The discovery of an enormous chasm in a far northern region known to locals as “the end of the world” in July last year prompted speculation it had been caused by a meteorite or even aliens. A YouTube video of the hole went viral and a group of scientists was despatched to investigate. “We have just learnt that in Yakutia, new information has emerged about a giant crater one kilometre (0.6 miles) in diameter,” the deputy director of the Oil and Gas Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vasily Bogoyavlensky, told AFP. He said this brought to seven the number of reported pits. “Footage allows us to identify minimum seven craters, but in fact there are plenty more,” he said. All of the craters have been discovered in the remote energy-rich Yamalo-Nenetsky region in north-western Siberia.
