Christian leaders reportedly pressured Israel to turn over control of Mount Zion in Jerusalem during a clandestine meeting of senior city officials. The meeting took place Tuesday in the office of Attorney Amnon Merhav, the director-general of the Jerusalem municipality. It was attended by officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, President’s Office, Tourism Ministry, Police, Kotel Rabbi’s Office, and more. During the meeting, representatives of Christian groups in the capital pushed Jerusalem leaders to give the Catholic Church control over the Mount Zion area that includes the “Hall of the Last Supper.” There have been reports that Israel’s government is planning to turn the building in question over to the Vatican prior to the Pope’s expected visit in May. Pope Francis is expected to visit Israel and to lead a service in the Hall of the Last Supper. In response to reports regarding the Tuesday meeting, the city of Jerusalem released a statement saying, “The state of Israel and the Jerusalem municipality are paying special attention to the Mount Zion compound, with the goal of improving and updating the infrastructure and the municipal service, and of calming tension… The municipality will continue to lead the process as the central sovereign power on Mount Zion.” The Prime Minister’s Office declined to respond. Meanwhile, Palestine and the Pontifical Mission in Jerusalem Thursday signed a $500,000 agreement for the restoration of the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem. Ziad Bandak, who heads the presidential committee overseeing the church renovation, signed the agreement with Sami Yousef, the regional director of the Pontifical Mission. “The agreement is signed to secure another financial contribution for the Church of the Nativity Restoration Fund,” said Bandak. “We have been offered pledges to receive more financial contributions in order to carry the restoration process that approximately requires $20 million.”

Iran’s President, Hassan Rouhani, on Wednesday said that Jerusalem should “be liberated from the yoke of Israel.” The comments were made during a meeting in Tehran between Rouhani and the Speaker or the Palestinian Authority (PA) parliament, Salim Zanoun, and were reported by the semi-official Fars news agency. During the meeting, according to Fars, Rouhani expressed the support of the Iranian government and nation “for the oppressed people of Palestine”, and called for the “liberation of the Holy Quds (Jerusalem) from the yoke of Israel.” “One of the wishes of the Iranian nation is liberation of the Holy Quds,” the Iranian President was quoted as having said, adding that he hoped “the Palestinian nation and the entire Muslim world will find a serious solution to this occupation through unity and integrity”.

Headline:  Fatah official: Let Hamas kidnap Israeli soldiers

Even as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas assured Israeli students on Sunday that Palestinians have abandoned violence for good, a senior member of his Fatah movement praised the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers as the only means for securing the release of Palestinian security prisoners held in Israeli jails. Jibril Rajoub, a member of Fatah’s Central Committee and former commander of the Preventive Security Force in the West Bank, told Palestinian television last month that kidnappings are “the only language that Israel understands,” the watchdog group Palestinian Media Watch reported on Wednesday. “When they [Hamas] kidnapped [Israeli soldier Gilad] Shalit, we congratulated them. When they realized the Shalit deal — despite some reservations we had — we also congratulated them,” Rajoub said. Rajoub said that kidnappings are perfectly legitimate if the alternative is life in prison for the remaining Palestinian prisoners. “If they [the Israelis] don’t want to release prisoners, but want them in prison for life so that they come out as ghosts or skeletons, clearly the kidnapping model is the language they understand,” he said.

Headline:  Obama and Erdogan Discuss Turkey-Israel Normalization

U.S. President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday discussed the normalization of ties between Turkey and Israel. “The President and Prime Minister spoke about the importance of quickly concluding the normalization agreement with Israel,” said a White House readout of the telephone conversation between the two leaders. The statement further noted that Obama and Erdogan “agreed on the importance of close cooperation between our two countries to address the growing terrorist presence in Syria and on the shared interest in continuing efforts to advance a political solution to the Syria conflict.” The conversation comes after it was reported last week that Israel and Turkey were close to normalizing their ties, only to have Erdogan reject normalization and make more demands of Israel.

Headline:  PA Official: Abbas Ready for Israel as a Jewish State

A senior PLO official was quoted as saying that Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas was prepared to recognize Israel – this time, for real. A story in Maariv Thursday quoted Nabil Amaro as saying on PA television that Abbas would agree to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, as part of the negotiations being conducted by US Secretary of State John Kerry. Israel has insisted that the PA recognize Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people, and so far Abbas has refused to do so. According to Abbas, the PA has already recognized Israel’s right to exist and has promised to respect whatever borders are negotiated. By recognizing Israel as a Jewish state, he claims, the rights of Israeli Arabs will be damaged, and the PA would no longer be able to demand that Israel accept hundreds of thousands of Arabs, as the PA is demanding.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is trying to push Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) to sign a peace agreement, is hinting that Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria may not be evicted from their homes when an agreement is signed. In an interview with journalist Ilana Dayan on Channel 2, Kerry was asked what will be the personal price that residents of Judea and Samaria will have to pay for peace. “I’m not at all certain they will have to leave their homes,” he replied. The full interview will air Thursday evening on Dayan’s “Uvda” program, but excerpts from it were released on Wednesday. Kerry has remained optimistic about the talks throughout the process, stating in December that a deal was “close” despite ongoing complications and dispute over the terms from both the PA and Israel. He has been trying to get both sides to agree to a framework agreement, of which little details have been revealed, though Thomas Friedman of the New York Times published some alleged details of the plan, which, he said, will call for a phased Israeli withdrawal from Judea and Samaria based on the 1949 lines, with “unprecedented” security arrangements in the strategic Jordan Valley. The Israeli withdrawal will not include certain settlement blocs, but Israel will compensate the Arab side for this with Israeli territory. Martin Indyk, the US Envoy to the Middle East, later revealed to American Jewish leaders that 75 to 80 percent of the Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria would remain in their homes even after a permanent agreement. The agreement will include a reference to the incitement against Israel in the Palestinian Authority (PA) and will also include a reference to compensation for Jewish refugees who came from Arab countries.  Meanwhile, Palestinian President said set to present red lines to Kerry in second meeting on core issues in Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Obama administration asked Israel to impose an unofficial settlement freeze outside of major settlements blocs if a framework agreement is agreed upon, Army Radio reported Wednesday. Israel has yet to officially respond to the request, according to the report, and the US is not yet pressing for an answer. But both Washington and Jerusalem understand that additional concessions will have to be made in order to ensure PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s support for continuing negotiations beyond the original nine-month window set to end in April.  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declined to comment on the report. An unofficial freeze would not require an official government order, giving Netanyahu some political cover, but it would mean that his administration would have to use bureaucratic obstacles to hold up the approval of new projects.

Headline:   US framework draft is too vague, says top PLO official

Ambiguous language in the text of an American framework agreement to be presented to Israel and the Palestinians may lead to the collapse of peace talks, a senior Palestinian official warned on Wednesday.  Ahmed Qurei, a member of the PLO’s Executive Committee and a former prime minister, said that current American positions on a number of core negotiating issues including borders, Jerusalem and the settlements do not satisfy the Palestinian need for clarity. “Trying to put ambiguity in the text will not help the parties. I don’t want to continue discussing what this or that [phrase] means … this would be a waste of time, and the Israelis on the other side will continue their projects on the ground to change the status of the West Bank and maintain the separation of Gaza from the West Bank,” Qurei, known more commonly by the nom de guerre Abu Alaa, told journalists at his office in Abu Dis, east of Jerusalem. An American document outlining the Obama administration’s outlook on all core issues is expected within two weeks. Qurei, who headed the Palestinian negotiating team to the Annapolis negotiations with Israel in 2008, said that in his talks with the sides, John Kerry has preferred to propose formulas that are palatable to the Israeli side rather than refer to previous international resolutions. The American formula voiced by Kerry speaks of “a Palestinian right to a capital in Jerusalem.” “This we cannot accept,” Qurei said. “We want [explicit mention of] East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.” He said that reference to Jerusalem with no distinction between east and west tacitly acknowledges Israel’s annexation of the eastern part of the city occupied in 1967.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh in Paris on Wednesday reviewed with US Secretary of State John Kerry various aspects of the important and successful visit of His Majesty King Abdullah to the US, his summit meeting with President Barack Obama and his other meetings with administration officials and lawmakers. Judeh’s meeting with his US counterpart came in line with continued coordination and consultations between Jordan and the US, regarding the latest developments, especially efforts exerted by Kerry to arrive at a framework for negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The meeting was also in line with the US commitment to keeping Jordan constantly updated on efforts exerted within this context, in light of Jordan’s key interests in the final status issues, the agency said. Kerry stressed the importance of the Kingdom’s role and its national interests, Petra reported. Judeh asserted Jordan’s position in support of the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the Palestinian national soil with East Jerusalem as its capital. At the meeting, the two sides agreed to keep all channels of communications open and to intensify contacts between them, especially in the coming stage. On Tuesday, Judeh met with the Quartet’s special envoy, Tony Blair, and discussed the progress of the current US-brokered peace negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Headline:  Syria press accuses Jordan of stirring revolt in south

Syrian media on Thursday accused Jordan of trying to stir up the rebel front in the south of the country with support from the United States and Saudi Arabia. “The southern front is today the most prominent after the subject was widely discussed under the aegis of the palace in Jordan,” the Al-Thawra government daily wrote. “Jordan’s role, in coordination with the intelligence services of the United States, Saudi Arabia and Israel and with a little help from the Gulf countries, is no longer a secret.” The newspaper said international backers of the opposition were trying to stir up the southern front after a stalemate in peace efforts following a second round of talks in Geneva this month. Rebels say they are preparing a spring offensive against Damascus to be launched from the south of the country.

Headline:  Several die in Beirut attacks

A double suicide car bombing targeted an Iranian cultural centre in Beirut on Wednesday, killing at least eight people in the latest attack linked to the conflict in neighbouring Syria. The toll was reported by a section of the media. The attack was quickly claimed by the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, a militant group inspired by Al Qaeda which previously claimed a double suicide bombing aimed at Iran’s embassy in Beirut.  Lebanon’s army confirmed the attack was a double suicide car bombing, and Health Minister Wael Abu Faour said four people were killed and 103 wounded.  Prime Minister Tammam Salam condemned the attack, saying it was a “message reflecting the determination of the forces of evil to harm Lebanon.” “The message has been received and we will respond to it with solidarity and commitment to civil accord and rallying around our army and our security forces,” he said in a statement.

A senior official of a Lebanese party which backs the Syrian regime was gunned down Thursday in the northern city of Tripoli, sparking deadly clashes, security officials said.  “Masked gunmen opened fire at 7:00 a.m. on Abdelrahman Diab,” an Alawite official in the Arab Democratic Party, as he drove through Tripoli, a hotspot of violence between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad, an official told AFP. He said hooded gunmen on a motorbike carried out the assassination in a Sunni neighbourhood, shooting Diab in the head and stomach. A party official confirmed the killing and said Diab was in charge of “military” affairs. As news of the attack spread, one person was killed and eight wounded in clashes between Alawites and Sunnis in the Bab al-Tebbaneh district of the port city, closing local schools and shops, security sources said. Meanwhile, The Arab Democratic Party issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Lebanese authorities Thursday following the assassination of a party official in the restive northern city of Tripoli. The killing of Abdel-Rahman Diab triggered violence in the city, leaving two people killed and five others wounded by sniper fire. Secretary-General Rifaat Eid said if Diab’s killers were not arrested by the deadline, “Tripoli will bear the consequences.” “We can’t remain silent anymore. If the government doesn’t arrest the shooters in 48 hours, Tripoli will be directly targeted,” Eid warned. “We will deal firmly with the issue and let Tripoli bear the consequences.”

Headline:   Saudi forces kill two anti-government protesters in Qatif

Security forces in Saudi Arabia have killed two anti-government activists in the Qatif governorate of Eastern Province. The two were killed when regime forces supported by armed vehicles stormed the town of Awamiyah, which has been the scene of violent clashes between anti-regime protesters and Saudi forces for three years. The move is considered as part of a fresh crackdown on anti-regime protests in Saudi Arabia. On Wednesday, a Saudi court in Qatif sentenced seven people to jail terms of up to 20 years for taking part in protests in Qatif. The men were also convicted of chanting slogans against the government as well as possession and making of petrol bombs and throwing them at the kingdom’s security forces. Human rights groups have censured the verdicts and called on Saudi authorities to release the detainees.

Headline:  Syrian opposition’s new military leadership sparks controversy

The military opposition in Syria has experienced yet another leadership change after head of the Supreme Military Command Brigadier-General Salim Idris was voted out of office on Sunday. Idris, who has struggled for months to procure lethal aid for rebels fighting government forces, has been replaced by Abdulilah al-Noeim, a commander from Quneitra fighting on Syria’s southern front. However, significant controversy about Idris’s removal has already emerged, and experts are still unsure if the SMC’s new leadership will be able to unite the opposition’s disparate fighting forces. Rebel factions in Syria had largely perceived the SMC, established in late 2012 in an effort to unite Syria’s military opposition, as ineffectual and irrelevant. Idris has headed the SMC since its formation, but was becoming increasingly marginalized as strong rebel coalitions like Jaysh al-Mujahideen, the Islamic Front, and Jabhat al-Nusra took the lead on the ground in Syria. The decision has been met with mixed reactions. Several SMC factions, including the Hazm Movement, have rejected Idris’s removal and insisted he is the legitimate representative of Syria’s rebel forces. The leadership change has not yet affected US support for the SMC, said Layman, despite threats to cut aid.

Headline:  Blast rocks Syrian refugee camp near Turkey border, scores wounded

An explosion believed to have been caused by a car bomb tore through a Syrian refugee camp at a border post on the frontier with Turkey on Thursday, wounding scores of people, local officials said. Ambulances ferried the injured to the southern Turkish city of Kilis, where a state hospital official said at least 40 people were being treated. A Turkish border official said the blast near Turkey’s Oncupinar border post, which sits opposite the Syrian Bab al-Salameh gate, could be felt several kilometers away, but that the border gate remained open. Turkey is sheltering more than 600,000 refugees from Syria’s civil war and has kept its border open throughout the conflict. Thousands of people have been fleeing the Syrian city of Aleppo, some 60 km south of Kilis, in recent weeks because of a campaign of improvised “barrel bomb” attacks by President Bashar Assad’s forces. Towns near Bab al-Salameh have also seen sporadic clashes between the rebels fighting Assad and fighters from an Al-Qaida splinter group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Syrian rebels were engaged in fierce battles Thursday with regime forces trying to capture the town of Yabroud, their last stronghold in the strategic Qalamun region near the Lebanese border, activists said. Meanwhile, in the northern city of Aleppo, eight soldiers were killed by a rebel suicide bombing at the city’s central prison, which rebels have long been trying to capture, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Observatory said rebels were fighting on Yabroud’s outskirts against government troops, backed by National Defence Forces militia and Lebanon’s Shiite movement Hezbollah. The rebel side included Islamist brigades and Al-Nusra Front, an Al-Qaeda affiliate, the Britain-based Observatory said. “There have been many losses on both sides, but there are not exact figures yet,” the Observatory said, adding that a citizen journalist with the rebels was among those killed. A source close to Hezbollah said the government would seize Yabroud soon. “Yabroud will be take by the Syrian army very soon, by force or through negotiations. Then the mountain leading to the village of Arsal (in Lebanon) will be taken.” On Thursday, Syria’s Al-Watan newspaper said the “army is advancing around the town and is ready to take control.” A security source told AFP the plan was to advance incrementally on all sides of the town “until it is taken completely.”

There are major differences between the Psalm 83 war and the Ezekiel 38 war which shows us they are not the same war.  Here are a few major differences. At the current time Israel is still calling for Peace and safety and they have bars, gates, and walls to protect them from the PLO.  The  told Ezekiel this war will take place when Israel is living in peace and feeling safe.  As long as the enemies of Israel listed in the Psalm 83 war are working to wipe out Israel, Israel will never feel safe enough to remove any of the bars, gates, or walls which shows us the Psalm war has to take place first.  Another major difference between the Psalm war and Ezekiel war is the nations who attack Israel are different. In the Psalm 83 war you see the nations that border Israel attacking her.  The nations listed to attack Israel in the Ezekiel war do not show any of the nations which are listed in the Psalm war.  Why?  The answer is simple. Israel will already have destroyed the nations who attacked them in the Psalm 83 war and they will make no other to attempt to wipe them out.  When the nations listed in the Ezekiel war see what Israel did to their Brothers listed in the Psalm war they in turn will pick up the torch and try to do what the Psalm 83 nations couldn’t do, wipe Israel off the map.  How will this Ezekiel 38-39 war end. God tells us that 5/6 of the entire army that attacks Israel will be killed.  At the end of the day Israel will have won the Psalm 83 war and the Ezekiel war.  In the Psalm 83 war the IDF will have defeated their enemies.  In the Ezekiel it will be God who steps in to wipe out all the armies who try to wipe out Israel.  The current events you are now witnessing in the Middle East is setting up the scene for both the Psalm war and Ezekiel war.

Iran and world powers agreed Thursday a timetable and framework for the ambitious and arduous process of hammering out a lasting nuclear accord by July 20 that satisfies all sides. Such a deal, if reached, should resolve the decade-old standoff over Iran’s nuclear drive, silence talk of war for good and help normalise Tehran’s strained international relations. After chairing “very productive” days of talks in Vienna, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said experts would meet in early March before political directors return to Vienna on March 17. “There is a lot to do, it won’t be easy but we have made a good start,” Ashton told reporters, saying negotiators had “identified all the issues we need to address”. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on his Facebook page that the parties “also agreed to hold several meeting on a monthly basis until late May”. He told Iranian media that the atmosphere in the Austrian capital was “very serious” and “even a little bit more positive than anyone predicted,” but however there is a “difficult way ahead of us”.

Headline:  Iraq mortar attack kills 11: officials

Three mortar rounds struck the Mussayib area south of Baghdad on Thursday, killing 11 people, police and a doctor said. The attack also wounded 19 people, the sources said. A car bomb killed one person in Mussayib on Tuesday, one of 10 such blasts to hit central Iraq that day. Iraqi authorities are struggling to contain the worst violence to hit the country since 2008, when it was just emerging from a brutal period of sectarian killings in which tens of thousands died. But despite measures including wide-ranging operations against militants, the violence has continued unabated. More than 1,500 people have been killed in attacks and clashes so far this year, after upwards of 6,800 died in violence in 2013, according to AFP figures based on security and medical sources. And all of one city west of Baghdad and part of another have been held by anti-government fighters for weeks.

Headline:  Sudanese rebels shell Kadugli in South Kordofan

The rebels of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) have launched a rocket attack on the capital city of Sudan’s South Kordofan state. Citing the state’s governor, Radio Omdurman reported on Wednesday that SPLM-N “shelled Kadugli with Katyusha (rockets).”  A witness said several rockets were fired at the southern part of the city at about 12:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT), adding, “I saw one house ablaze.” There have been no reports of casualties in the attack. The attack came a day after the representatives of government and rebels failed to make progress in ending three years of fighting in the states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile during African Union-mediated peace talks in Ethiopia. The peace negotiations are supposed to resume later this month.

Headline: Japan trade deficit hits record $27.4B in January

Japan’s trade deficit surged to a monthly record of 2.8 trillion yen ($27.4 billion) in January as imports jumped 25 percent, underscoring the challenge the country faces in restoring export-driven growth. A weakening in the Japanese yen over the past year has failed to boost exports as much as hoped while imports of oil and gas, food and other products have surged. Consumers and businesses are thought to be stepping up purchases ahead of an April 1 sales tax hike. The Finance Ministry reported Thursday that exports rose 9.5 percent from a year earlier to 5.25 trillion yen ($51.5 billion) while imports were 8.04 trillion yen ($78.8 billion).  The previous record monthly deficit was 1.63 trillion yen, in January 2013.

Headline:  China cuts US debt holdings amid Fed taper

China reduced its holdings of US Treasury debt in December by the most in two years as the Federal Reserve announced plans to slow asset purchases. US government bonds held by China – the biggest US creditor – fell by US$47.8 billion, or 3.6 per cent, to US$1.27 trillion, the largest decline since December 2011, Department of the Treasury data released on Tuesday shows. At the same time, international investors increased holdings by 1.4 per cent, or US$78 billion, in December, pushing foreign holdings to a record US$5.79 trillion. Yields on benchmark 10-year notes rose to 3 per cent in December, the most since July 2011, after Federal Reserve officials announced plans to begin scaling back the central bank’s bond purchase programme, designed to keep borrowing rates low and jump-start the economy. The prospect of tapering sent US government securities down 3.4 per cent last year, the first annual decline since 2009’s record 3.7 per cent loss, the Bank of America Merrill Lynch US Treasury Index shows. “The Chinese move to sell suggests central banks are becoming more wary of taking duration risk now with the Federal Reserve firmly into the tapering process,” said Aaron Kohli, an interest-rate strategist in New York at BNP Paribas, one of 22 primary dealers that trade with the Fed. “If China continues to sell again in the next month or two, then more worries will arise as to who will buy the country’s debt.”

Headline:  Gov’t Report: Food Stamps Participation at Historic High

A recently released Department of Agriculture (USDA) report on the “Food Assistance Landscape” for the fiscal year 2013 shows that for the second year in a row, participation in the federal government’s SNAP (food stamps) program has increased despite a corresponding drop in the unemployment rate, bucking the historical trend. The unemployment rate fell below 8 percent in 2013. On the other hand, the percentage of the U.S. population on food stamps in 2013 rose to the highest level ever, just over 15 percent at 47,600,000 persons.

China has long trained for an amphibious invasion of Taiwan during military exercises but has expanded its training to include a similar attack on Japanese holdings in the East China Sea, according the chief of intelligence of the U.S. Pacific Fleet (PACFLEET). As part of China’s Mission Action 2013 exercise — a massive exercise between the all branches of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) — the military trained for taking the Senkaku Islands, said Capt. James Fanell, deputy chief of staff intelligence and information operations for PACFLEET. “We witnessed the massive amphibious and cross military region enterprise — Mission Action 2013,” Fanell said at the West 2014 conference on Feb. 13 in San Diego, Calif. “[We] concluded that the PLA has been given the new task to be able to conduct a short sharp war to destroy Japanese forces in the East China Sea following with what can only be expected a seizure of the Senkakus or even a southern Ryukyu [islands] — as some of their academics say.” In the last year, China has increased the military activity has additionally increased provocative military actions in the South China Sea around the so-called Nine Dash Line — China’s expansive claim into the region in conflict with several other international claims.

Headline: China tells North Korea it will never allow peninsular war

China informed North Korea its goal is the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, noting it will “never allow war or chaos” in the region. The message was conveyed by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin during his four-day visit to North Korea ended Thursday, South Korea’s Yonhap news reported quoting a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement. China is the closest ally of North Korea and Liu’s warning came as the North remains adamant in pursuing its nuclear weapons program, having already conducted three nuclear tests. China is also trying to restart the stalled six-nation talks on the North’s denuclearization which includes the United States, Russia, South Korea and Japan. “Liu Zhenmin stressed that China adheres to the goal of denuclearization of the Peninsula, maintaining peace and stability on the Peninsula and solving problems through dialogue and negotiation. China will never allow war or chaos on the peninsula,” the Chinese statement said. Liu made his remarks during a meeting with senior North Korean officials, including Foreign Minister Pak Ui Chun. Yonhap said his comments appeared to be the first time a senior Chinese official had publicly stated his country’s views. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, however, reportedly conveyed similar remarks last week during talks with visiting U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

The H1N1 virus responsible for the 2009 global pandemic is back. State health officials from across the country say the resurgence is resulting in a dramatic rise in flu deaths in young and middle-aged adults and in children this season. While the reported death tolls so far are only a fraction of what they were four years ago, they are significantly higher than last year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the flu has been killing at epidemic levels since mid-January. H1N1, which is also known as the “swine flu” because it was originally a respiratory illness in pigs, has been popping up in some patients seasonally for the past few years, but this is the first flu season since the 2009 pandemic in which it has been circulating so widely. The outbreak has been especially severe in California. There have been 243 deaths of residents younger than 65 so far this year. An additional 41 cases were reported but have not been confirmed. In the 2012-13 season, there were 26 deaths by this time, and in the 2011-12 season there were nine deaths. In the 2009-10 season, there were 527 deaths. Surveillance reports from the health departments in Virginia and Maryland show that the flu is widespread in the region, but the two states and the District of Columbia do not track adult deaths from the flu. The District has seen a surge in flu cases in the past month, with 90 percent being H1N1. Virginia reported that one child died from flu this season, while Maryland and the District had no child deaths. The reemergence of H1N1 in the United States comes as even more virulent strains that are combinations of several genetic strains begin to appear around the world. In recent months, the World Health Organization has been tracking more than 300 cases, mostly in China, of people infected by a dangerous avian influenza strain, H7N9. A quarter of those infected are estimated to have died, but so far the WHO says there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission. This month, there was more alarming news: Chinese officials, writing in the journal Lancet, said they identified yet another brand-new bird flu, H10N8, in a 73-year-old woman in Nanchang, a city in the southeastern part of the country. Researchers hypothesize that the woman, the first known death from this strain, may have contracted the virus while at a poultry market. The scientists warned that the virus could become extremely dangerous if it developed the ability to be transmitted from human to human.

Headline:   New radioactive leak reported at Japan’s Fukushima plant

The operator of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant says 100 metric tons of highly contaminated water have leaked out of a tank in the worst incident at the devastated facility since last August, when a string of radioactive leaks plagued the meltdown-crippled plant. Tokyo Electric Power Company said water overflowed from a large storage tank at the site late Wednesday after a valve was left open by mistake and sent too much contaminated water into a separate holding area, Reuters reported on Thursday. “We are taking various measures, but we apologize for worrying the public with such a leak,” Masayuki Ono, a spokesman for the utility, was quoted as saying. “Water is unlikely to have reached the ocean as there is no drainage in that tank area.” The amount is small compared to the thousands of tons of radioactive water that leaked, much of it into the Pacific Ocean, after a massive earthquake and tsunami that wrecked the plant in 2011.

Just weeks ago in Elmwood, Canada, local beekeeper Dave Schuit lost 600 hives, or a total of 37 million bees. Another Canadian farmer lost eight of his 10 hives. The bees started dying in droves just after corn in the area was planted, an alarming red flag since corn seeds are often treated with neonicotinoid pesticides, which are known to kill insects by attacking their nervous systems. Some governments are finally taking action against these toxic chemicals, but clearly not fast enough. How many more millions of bees have to die before protection is granted to these invaluable creatures? For those who aren’t aware, there are about 100 crop species that provide 90 percent of food globally and, of these, 71 are pollinated by bees.

February 19, 2014 Bumblebees infected with honeybee diseases

The beleaguered bumblebee faces a new threat, scientists say. Researchers have found that two diseases harboured by honeybees are spilling over into wild bumblebees. Insects infected with deformed wing virus and a fungal parasite called Nosema ceranae were found across England, Scotland and Wales. Writing in the journal Nature, the team says that beekeepers should keep their honeybees as free from disease as possible to stop the spread. “These pathogens are capable of infecting adult bumblebees and they seem to have quite significant impacts,” said Professor Mark Brown from Royal Holloway, University of London. Around the world, bumblebees are doing badly. In the last few decades, many species have suffered steep declines, and some, such Cullem’s bumblebee (Bombus cullumanus) in the UK, have gone extinct. Luke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. I like to call this “The Arab Spring in Prophecy” because for us it is easy to identify- that’s what the world calls it.  Luke 21:9:  wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions)   Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)

The agency will conduct a “General Population Survey” that will “measure community members’ actual and perceived critical information needs.” Got that? What you think (perceive) you need to know is different from what the government says you need to know. Next, the FCC will send monitors to newsrooms across the country who will ask questions regarding the “philosophy” of the newsroom, inquire about possible conflicts between reporters and their bosses, and even determine how much influence each individual has in deciding what to report.

Headline: Venezuela protests death toll rises to six

It was a well-publicised event: Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez had previously announced he was prepared to risk arrest and march through the streets of Caracas.  On Tuesday he voluntarily handed himself over to police but not before urging tens of thousands of anti-government protesters to remain firm. “Don’t leave the streets…we must take up our right to protest but we must do it peacefully. Brother, I ask you and every Venezuelan who wants change…we must inform ourselves, gather ourselves…organise ourselves and hold non-violent protests,” said Lopez at a well attended rally in the Venezuelan capital. Lopez is wanted on government charges of murder and “terrorism” but claims he is being made a scapegoat by President Nicolas Maduro.  At least four people have died during demonstrations against Maduro’s handling of the economy, corruption and product shortages.

Headline:  Hundreds in Somalia’s capital flee clashes

Residents in Mogadishu say that hundreds of families are fleeing the Somali capital after a spike in the number of clashes between militants and pro-government troops. Dozens of vehicles piled high with belongings headed to the outskirts of Mogadishu on Thursday. Mumino Jama, a mother of five, said her family is leaving because the fighting is “scary.” Mohamed Ali, another resident, said heavy clashes have included mortar fire that has landed on civilian homes. Ali said he knows of four people killed in the clashes. The clashes follow a rise in assassinations by gunmen. The latest violence is a setback for the Somali capital, which is trying to move past decades of war. Mogadishu has seen relative stability since the ouster of Islamist rebels from Al-Shabab in 2011.

Headline:  Nigeria’s Boko Haram Threatens Oil Refineries, Muslim Clerics

Nigerian police report 60 people were killed early Wednesday when insurgents attacked a town in northern Nigeria. Witnesses blamed militant group Boko Haram, which has issued a new threat to bomb oil refineries and kill prominent Muslim clerics. As reports filtered in Wednesday that gunmen in Bama were once again shooting people and setting homes on fire, Boko Haram released a video statement saying it plans to widen its reach, to attack oil refineries in the south and continue its assault on Muslim clerics that don’t agree with its harsh interpretation of Islamic law. Analysts say Boko Haram’s continued threats and attacks are a sign that the Nigerian government has failed to stop the more than four-year-old insurgency, despite nine months of emergency rule in three northeastern states.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister confirmed Thursday he had signed a decree to issue service firearms to police officers and authorized the use of live ammunition. The statement came in the wake of numerous reports from Kiev of both anti-government protesters and police officers being shot dead in ongoing clashes, in which at least 50 people have reportedly been killed. Until this week, Ukrainian riot police had been using non-lethal weapons, such as tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets, against protesters in street demonstrations that have been taking place around Ukraine since November. “Law enforcement officers have received service firearms and will use them in accordance with Ukraine’s law on police,” Vitaly Zakharchenko said in a statement posted on the ministry’s website. “The Interior Ministry demands that extremists hand over their weapons and return to peaceful protests. Those opposition leaders and activists who are capable of soberly evaluating the situation should dissociate themselves from the radicals and refrain from supporting them in future,” the statement reads.
