Britain announced emergency funding Thursday to cope with devastating floods after what officials said had been likely the worst spell of winter rainfall in at least 248 years. Prime Minister David Cameron’s government has faced criticism for its handling of a crisis that has left swathes of the country under water, with a key railway line washed away. Several people had to be rescued from deluged homes on Thursday while more storms are expected this weekend. Across the English Channel, France’s western tip was placed on alert for flooding as high tides wreaked havoc along Europe’s Atlantic coast. Britain’s Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said the government would make an extra 30 million ($48 million, 36 million euros) available for emergency repairs, on top of 100 million announced by Cameron on Wednesday. Pickles said the winter was the “wettest since George III was on the throne”, referring to Britain’s monarch from 1760-1820. He added that flood victims have “literally been through hell and high water”. Britain’s Meterological Office released figures confirming Pickles’ assessment. For southern England, “regional statistics suggest that this is one of, if not the most, exceptional periods of winter rainfall in at least 248 years”, it said in a statement. Parts of the region received five months of rainfall between December 12 and January 31. The rainy winter has set records tumbling, being the wettest combined period of December and January across the United Kingdom since 1910, the Met Office said. It was also the windiest December since 1969, based on the occurrence of winds over 69 mph. For England alone it was the wettest December to January since 1876-1877 and the second wettest since rainfall records began in 1766.

Headline: U.S. Postal Service Announces Giant Ammo Purchase
The U.S. Postal Service is currently seeking companies that can provide “assorted small arms ammunition” in the near future. On Jan. 31, the USPS Supplies and Services Purchasing Office posted a notice on the Federal Business Opportunities website asking contractors to register with USPS as potential ammunition suppliers for a variety of cartridges. Ironically the Postal Service isn’t the first non-law enforcement agency seeking firearms and ammunition. Since 2001, the U.S. Dept. of Education has been building a massive arsenal through purchases orchestrated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The Education Dept. has spent over $80,000 so far on Glock pistols and over $17,000 on Remington shotguns. Back in July, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also purchased 72,000 rounds of .40 Smith & Wesson, following a 2012 purchase for 46,000 rounds of .40 S&W jacketed hollow point by the National Weather Service. NOAA spokesperson Scott Smullen responded to concerns over the weather service purchase by stating that it was meant for the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement for its bi-annual “target qualifications and training.” That seems excessive considering that JHP ammunition is typically several times more expensive than practice rounds, which can usually be found in equivalent power loadings and thus offer similar recoil characteristics as duty rounds. Including mass purchases by the Dept. of Homeland Security, non-military federal agencies combined have purchased an estimated amount of over two billion rounds of ammunition in the past two years. Additionally, the U.S. Army bought almost 600,000 Soviet AK-47 magazines last fall, enough to hold nearly 18,000,000 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammo which is not standard-issue for either the U.S. military or even NATO. It would take a Lockheed Martin C-5 Galaxy, one of the largest cargo aircraft in the world, two trips to haul that many magazines. A month prior, the army purchased nearly 3,000,000 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammo, a huge amount but still only 1/6th of what the magazines purchased can hold in total. The Feds have also spent millions on riot control measures in addition to the ammo acquisitions. Earlier this month, Homeland Security spent over $58 million on hiring security details for just two Social Security offices in Maryland. DHS also spent $80 million on armed guards to protect government buildings in New York and sought even more guards for federal facilities in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Hundreds of young worshipers flung rocks at Israeli police on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount just after Muslim Friday prayers concluded at the al-Aqsa mosque. Police forces broke up the demonstration using stun grenades. No injuries were reported. Five suspects were arrested in the incident. The contested site has been relatively quiet since an uptick in violent incidents in early December 2013. In one incident, several people within the mosque shot fireworks at police, setting off a brief scuffle. Two days earlier, two Jews and two Arabs were arrested when a melee broke out after a Jewish group under police protection began to sing Hanukkah songs. Jews are allowed atop the Temple Mount, but are often closely watched by security forces and are forbidden to pray in any way while at the sensitive site.

Headline: Gaza rocket explodes in northern Negev
A rocket from Gaza exploded between two towns in Eshkol Regional Council on Thursday night. No casualties and no damage were reported. Two more rocket attacks were reported on Thursday. Another rocket exploded in an open area near Ashkelon on Thursday evening and a third one exploded in the area earlier that day. A rocket alert siren was heard in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon’s industrial zone Thursday night, and residents also reported hearing at least one strong blast. The army still hasn’t confirmed whether a rocket exploded. Security forces are combing the area for signs of an explosion. On Friday, Iron Dome intercepted a rocket fired from Sinai toward Eilat. Al-Qaida affiliated militant organization, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (Champions of Jerusalem) took responsibility for the Eilat rocket attack. The Sinai rocket came in response to Israel Air Force jets strikes on targets in the Gaza Strip early Friday morning. The IAF strikes came hours after a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit southern Israel, causing no damage or injuries.

Headline: Erekat meets with U.S. peace envoy over settlement construction
Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat met on Thursday in Jericho with U.S. Middle East peace talks envoy Martin Indyk, against a backdrop of tension between Israel and the United Sates and criticism in Jerusalem of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. The meeting also comes a day after the Jerusalem municipality announced the construction of 558 apartments in East Jerusalem. According to a senior Palestinian official, the talks involved the details of the anticipated framework agreement for a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, and that the Palestinians stressed Israel’s infractions, particularly the announcement of the new housing. The official said no date has been set for Kerry to announce the outlines of the framework agreement. However, the official said the Americans told the Palestinians that the fourth stage of the Palestinian prisoner release would take place as planned in the next few weeks, whether or not an agreement had been presented or signed.

Headline: IMF: Failure of Peace Talks Will Further Hurt PA Economy
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Thursday that success in Middle East peace talks could boost the Palestinian Authority’s economic growth, but failure could cause increased debt, AFP reported. “A breakthrough in the peace talks could launch major donor initiatives…which could boost average annual real GDP growth to about 6.5 percent in 2014-19,” said an IMF report on a January 28-February 6 visit by its officials to PA-controlled areas of Judea and Samaria, as well as to Gaza. “On the other hand, failure of the peace negotiations could trigger a political and security crisis that would lead to accelerated arrears accumulation and economic contraction,” it said, according to AFP. The IMF said that if talks continue inconclusively it foresees growth in the PA’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of about 2.5 percent in 2014.

The debate took place a day after Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh declared that Jordan would not recognize Israel as Jewish state, and maintained that recognition of Israel as such should not be a requirement in the US framework proposal. “There is a dispute of faith between Judaism, on the one hand, and Islam and Christianity on the other,” MP Muhammad Al-Badri said at the session on Monday, according to a translation by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). “Therefore, no solutions will be achieved here – neither by John Kerry, nor by anybody else.” MP Tareq Al-Khouri echoed the sentiment, pointing to the nature of the Jews, namely “deceit,” as the reason a peace agreement were doomed to fail. “My problem with the Jews is a religious problem,” he said.

Headline: Cairo blasts wound 6 Egyptian officers
Two bombs have exploded near police officers patrolling a bridge in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, wounding six policemen, an Interior Ministry official said. The Friday morning announcement came shortly after Cairo resident reported hearing two blasts in the city center followed by ambulance sirens. It was not immediately clear whether the explosive devices were planted at the site or were thrown by assailants. “There was one powerful blast at 9:45 am local time (0745 GMT), followed by another, less powerful, two minutes later,” a resident was cited as saying in an earlier AFP report. The resident further explained that the blasts sounded as though they came from an area near the University of Cairo in the bustling Giza district. The Egyptian capital was struck with four bombings two Fridays ago on January 24 which targeted military institutions and killed six people.

Headline: 2 killed, dozens injured in clashes across Egypt
Egyptian security forces have fired live rounds at anti-government protesters marching in the northern province of Gharbia. The incident took place during a protest ahead of Friday prayers in the Qotour area of the Nile Delta. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Egypt’s Anti-coup Alliance had called for mass rallies to condemn the interim government’s crackdown on such rallies. Protesters also expressed outrage over reports that Egypt’s army chief, Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, plans to run for president. Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since last July when the army ousted the country’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, suspended the constitution, and dissolved the parliament. It also appointed the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court Adly Mahmoud Mansour as the new interim president.

Headline: Evacuation operation in Homs begins
Headline: Syria troops “retake most of Aleppo prison” from rebels
Emergency officials have started to evacuate groups of civilians from the city of Homs in Syria, after both sides agreed to a temporary truce. Two buses carrying vulnerable civilians have left the rebel-held Old City, which is surrounded by government forces. Up to 3,000 civilians are thought to be trapped in Homs. A UN-negotiated ceasefire between Syrian forces and rebels should also allow aid to reach Homs on Saturday. The governor of Homs said 16 people had left the Old City by bus, shortly after an earlier group of 12 elderly men and women arrived safely at the governor’s premises. BBC Arabic’s Assaf Abboud in Homs says the evacuated people were given meals and drinks and were taken for medical checks. They told journalists that there are more people who are still trapped in the city and who want to be evacuated. Syrian state TV reported that 35 civilians had been evacuated, “most of whom are children and elderly who had been used as human shields by terrorists”. Parts of Homs Old City have been under army siege since June 2012.

Johnson said he and other law enforcement and security officials around the world were focused on foreign fighters heading to the bloody war, including those from the United States, Canada and Europe. In excerpts from his first major speech since taking office last year, Johnson did not discuss how many US fighters may be in Syria. US intelligence officials have said a handful of Americans and hundreds of Europeans have already returned to their home countries. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the issue. The State Department has no estimates of how many Americans have gone to fight with Syrian rebels, but British defense consultant IHS Jane’s puts it at a few dozen. An estimated 1,200 to 1,700 Europeans are among rebel forces in Syria, according to government estimates.

Iran and Russia are in negotiations over the construction of a second nuclear power plant in Bushehr province, according to a senior Russian official. The deputy head of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) Nikolai Spassky said the talks were at a “working stage.” “We are discussing the possibility of continuing our cooperation with Iran,” he added in comments quoted by RIA Novosti. “Any partnership if we agree, must and will comply with Russia’s international obligations and should be cost-effective.” Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency carried Spassky’s comments with the headline: “Official: Russia to Help Iran Build 2nd N. Power Plant in Bushehr,” implying that negotiations were further along than the Russian official indicated. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had announced plans to build a second reactor in Bushehr in December.

Headline: Iranian Speaker: Israel is a ‘Cancer’ in the Region
The speaker of Iran’s parliament criticized Israel and the United States during a ceremony in honor of Tunisia’s new constitution on Friday, causing the American delegation to walk out of the celebrations, Reuters reports. Addressing the ceremony at the National Assembly in Tunis, Ali Larijani referred to Israel as a “cancer” in the region. He accused the Jewish state and the United States of trying to “sterilize” the Arab Spring revolutions. Larijani charged, according to an Arab translation of his speech quoted by AFP, that Israel and the United States had “tried to render these (Arab) revolutions sterile, and to make them deviate from their course so that Israel can benefit.” The American embassy in Tunis said following the incident, “What was intended to be a ceremony honoring Tunisia’s achievements was used by the Iranian representative as a platform to denounce the United States.”

Headline: Bombs, bullets kill 14 in Iraq capital, north
Over a dozen people have been killed in the latest wave of bombings and shootings that have hit the north of Iraq as well as the capital city of Baghdad. At least eight people were killed on Friday in separate bombings in Baghdad. Also a supporter of influential Shia cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr, was killed in an attack in the west Baghdad neighborhood of Ghazaliyah. Hamza al-Shammari, who was to stand in April’s parliamentary elections, was killed by unknown gunmen armed with silenced pistols. Another five were also killed and dozens more were injured in Tuz Khormato district, east of Tikrit in Salahuddin Province. The latest deaths follow a string of deadly bombings on Thursday that claimed the lives of 30 people in Baghdad and drew condemnation from the UN ambassador in Iraq.

Libyan Security forces are bracing for protest rallies in the capital, Tripoli, against the country’s protracted political transition from the ousted dictatorship of Muammer Kaddafi following an overnight attack on army headquarters. A Libyan military spokesman said Friday that the unidentified assailants tried to enter the complex late on Thursday, but were repelled by government guards. “The attackers ransacked cars and stole some weapons before pulling back,” said Colonel Ali al-Sheikhi. Another military source, according to an AFP report, offered a different version of events, saying that fighting broke out after a dispute among soldiers. Tensions are growing in the war-ravaged country ahead of Friday’s expected protest rallies against a decision by Libya’s highest political authority to extend its interim mandate.

Headline: Ghana moves to halt currency crash
Ghana has defended its decision to limit foreign exchange withdrawals in a bid to halt the slide in its currency the cedi. Foreign currency account holders have been limited to withdrawals of $10,000 (£6,000), which must be supported by evidence of an overseas trip. The cedi has fallen to a record low in recent days. Central Bank governor Kofi Wampah has also raised interest rates to 18% to attract more investment. Ghana is the latest emerging markets whose currency has fallen recently. The value of the South African rand has hit record lows, while currencies in Turkey and India have also been hit. Analysts say investors have switched away from emerging markets since the US Federal Reserve scaled back its stimulus programme. Ghana has also been hit by falls in the prices of its two major exports – gold and cocoa. The cedi has lost about 23% of its value over the past year.

Headline: Moody’s downgrades Puerto Rico credit rating
Puerto Rico’s credit rating was dealt its second blow in a week when Moody’s Investors Service announced Friday it had downgraded the U.S. territory’s debt to junk status. The downgrade of two notches came just days after Standard & Poor’s downgraded the island’s debt by one notch, prompting the local government to file new legislation aimed at shoring up the economy as it prepares to re-enter the bond market this month. Moody’s said Puerto Rico’s government took strong and aggressive actions to control spending and reduce debt issuance, among other things, but that it remained concerned about its liquidity and ability to access the market. “While some economic indicators point to a preliminary stabilization, we do not see evidence of economic growth sufficient to reverse the commonwealth’s negative financial trends,” the agency said. “Without an economic revival, the commonwealth will face difficult decisions in coming years, as its debt and pension costs rise.”

The teen unemployment rate went up in January to 20.7% — from 20.2% in December– and is now more than three times the national unemployment rate of 6.6%, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS numbers show there were 1,140,000 people ages 16-19 unemployed in December. For January, that number was 1,147,000 — an increase of 0.6%. Meanwhile, 1,154,000 fewer Americans are working today than six years ago, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In January 2008, 146,378,000 Americans 16 and over were employed, and now in January 2014, 145,224,000 are employed, a difference of 1,154,000. 91,455,000 Americans 16 or older did not participate in the nation’s labor force in January, meaning they neither held a job nor actively sought one. That’s a 353,000 decline from December, but 172,000 more than November.

Scientists analyzing kelp off the coast of San Diego confirmed the presence of cesium this week, a radioactive isotope directly linked to the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. Part of the ongoing “Kelp Watch 2014″ project, government and academic institutions have begun receiving results from samples of Bull Kelp and Giant Kelp collected along the California coast. Despite attempts by the media to downplay the ongoing disaster, the discovery has only confirmed the continued build up of radiation in West Coast waters. “We’re trying to figure out how much is there and how much is getting into the ecosystem,” said Dr. Matthew Edwards, a professor from San Diego State University. “Things are linked a little more closely than sometimes we’d like to think. Just because it is on the other side of the world doesn’t mean that it doesn’t effect us.” The discovery coincides with statements made by researchers at the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems in Spain, who predicted the early 2014 arrival of Fukushima radiation along the North American West Coast. Although scientists claim the levels of cesium are safe, the public’s distrust has only grown given the government’s continued denial of other issues related to radiation.

The demonstrators later marched toward the city’s central train station. Headline: Thai farmers stage protest over subsidy scheme
Protesters in Thailand have once again taken to the streets of the capital, Bangkok, in the latest show of public anger against the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Rice farmers, accompanied by trucks and combine harvesters, gathered outside the Commerce Ministry on Thursday in protest against the lack of payment by the government under a subsidy scheme, which had guaranteed farmers above-market rates for rice. “I want the government to help because I have no money to use now. We have suffered a lot … If they cannot solve the problem, then let other people do the job,” said farmer Sunan Poompuang. According to police, protesters also blocked two highways leading into Bangkok. The controversial scheme helped Yingluck to power, but the government has been unable to sell the rice to fund the scheme and some farmers have been waiting months to be paid. Yingluck’s administration blames three months of street protests in Bangkok for disrupting the scheme, as she says her government’s powers have been restricted after the dissolution of parliament in December 2013.

I am praying that if you keep coming to my site and see the things that our Lord said would happen prior to His second coming that you start to tell others to get ready to meet Jesus. While people are busy eating popcorn and thinking nothing is wrong there are signs everywhere that Jesus will be coming soon. One of the many things Christ toward us to look for is the sign of many earthquakes. Some of these quakes will be small and Christ also warned about the huge quakes in Luke 21:11. 19 more volcanoes on alert
The government has raised the status on another 19 volcanoes in the country to alert level — the second-highest category — in the wake of the Mount Sinabung eruption in North Sumatra that killed 16 people on Saturday.
Besides the 19 new additions, three volcanos have been on high alert status since last year. They include Lokon and Karangetang in North Sulawesi and Rokatenda in East Nusa Tenggara.

EU: Israel will Face ‘increasing Isolation’ if Talks Fail
EU Ambassador to Israel Lars Faaborg-Andersen threatened Israel Monday over the outcome of peace talks. "There is a risk that you will face increasing isolation [if talks fail]," Faaborg-Andersen said, in a statement to Channel 2. "Not necessarily as a result of European Union policy, but Israel has to realize that economic relations are established by private economic actors – be it consumers, be it companies – and we, as a government, has no influence on the private decisions that private citizens and companies are making." Faaborg-Andersen’s comments came just days after US Secretary of State John Kerry warned Israel of similar consequences if peace talks fail, in remarks widely perceived as a threat against Israel. "Today’s status quo absolutely, to a certainty, I promise you 100 percent, cannot be maintained," Kerry stated Saturday, at the Munich Security Conference. "It’s not sustainable. It’s illusionary. You see for Israel there’s an increasing de-legitimization campaign that has been building up [. . .] there are talk of boycotts and other kinds of things. Are we all going to be better with all of that?" Faaborg-Andersen’s remarks are not new for an EU official, with several having voiced criticism over Israeli construction in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem. Several months ago the EU published new guidelines which boycott Israeli entities operating beyond the 1949 Armistice Lines.The EU has dangled ‘unprecedented aid packages’ for both Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) if peace talks fail. As such, many private companies have joined the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement against Israel. In December, Dutch water company Vitens made headlines around the world when it decided to cut ties with Israeli water company Mekorot, which serves Judea and Samaria. More recently, two of the largest banks in northern Europe announced Sunday that they will boycott Israeli banks because they operate in “occupied territories."

Headline: Hamas launched 28 rocket attacks on Israel in January
Israel’s military has assessed that the Hamas regime renewed missile and rocket strikes on Israel. The Israeli military cited a sharp increase in missile and rocket attacks by Hamas and Palestinian militias from the Gaza Strip. The military said the renewal of strikes began last month. “Since the beginning of 2014, over 28 rockets were launched from Gaza at Israel by Gaza terrorists,” the Israeli military said. In a statement on Jan. 31, the military said rocket attacks during the month were nearly triple those of December 2013. In December, the military cited 10 rocket strikes from the Gaza Strip. “Fourteen of the rockets landed in southern Israel, and five were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, as they were approaching Ashkelon built up areas,” the military said. “In retaliation to these rocket attacks, IAF aircraft targeted numerous terror sites across the Gaza strip. In addition, at the beginning of January, IAF aircrafts targeted a terror squad during final preparations to launch rockets at southern Israel.” Military sources said Hamas was not directly participating in most of the rocket launches. But they said Hamas was not arresting rocket squads from such militias as Islamic Jihad, Popular Resistance Committees and Al Qaida-aligned militias. The statement did not explain the sharp rise in attacks.

Headline: Report: Israel may pay $20M in compensation for aid flotilla deaths
Families of nine people killed in an Israeli raid on a Turkish aid flotilla in 2010 have been offered $20 million in compensation, senior Western diplomats say. The diplomats, who have been briefed on the negotiations, said an agreement has not been finalized, Israeli broadcaster Arutz Sheva reported Monday, citing an exclusive report by Haaretz. Turkey initially demanded $30 million in connection with the deaths of the nine activists aboard the Mavi Marmara, which was attempted to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Israel reportedly countered it wouldn’t pay more than $15 million, Arutz Sheva said. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu later offered $20 million, with $3 million more possible “if necessary to secure an agreement,” the report said.

By the headline below one would think that there is going to be a peace deal signed between the PLO and Israel but, I for one do not believe it. Why? The PLO won’t consider saying Israel is a recognized state. There are other things that will be a hang nail in these new round of talks but, what I really want you to see is this short section from the report because it shows you the direction the PLO is thinking is in the direction of the Psalm 83 war of which they will take part in. I keep telling people that the PLO is not looking for peace with Israel they are looking for war and they will get their wish but they are not going to like the out come of that war. Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has suggested that NATO would be left in charge of the future Palestinian state instead of an army. Speaking to The New York Times from Ramallah, Abbas said that he would agree to let Israeli troops remain in the Palestinian state for a transitional period of five years to work with Palestinian and Jordanian security forces and reassure the Israeli public that it is not going to get hit with thousands of rockets, as was the case after the “Disengagement” from Gaza. Headline: Jordan’s FM Rejects Recognizing Israel as Jewish State
Jordan’s Foreign Minister said Sunday that he was against recognizing Israel as a Jewish state, the Jordanian website Ammon News reports. The minister, Nasser Judeh, also rejected the idea of Jordan being an alternative home for Palestinian Arabs. Speaking during a parliament session which dealt with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s peace plan, Judeh reiterated that Jordan will not be an “alternative home for anybody.” Judeh described American efforts to push peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a “serious attempt” to reach tangible results. “Jordan is integrally involved in and has big role in the Palestinian-Israeli talks,” he added, according to Ammon News. Judeh stressed that Jordan is not absent from the peace negotiations and will not accept any solution that contradicts with the country’s interests and national security. “Jordan will not negotiate on behalf of Palestinians regarding their envisioned state’s borders with Israel,” Judeh added. He reiterated Jordan’s stance which calls for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the pre-1967 borders with eastern Jerusalem as its capital. This, he said, is a top Jordanian national interest.

A bomb blast has hit south of the Lebanese capital Beirut, leaving at least two people dead. According Lebanon’s Interior Ministry, the blast took place on Monday when an attacker detonated his explosives inside a van which had been used for public transportation in Choueifat area. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast. The explosion came after Saturday’s car bomb attack killed at least five people in the border town of Hermel in northeastern Lebanon. The UN Security Council issued a statement on the same day, urging Lebanese people to “preserve national unity in the face of attempts to undermine the country’s stability.” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the deadly assault.

Egyptian military officials say troops backed by helicopters have raided suspected militants’ hideouts in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula, killing at least 20 and wounding 25. Elements of NATO are ready to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal, after the United States expressed concern over the Syrian government’s slow efforts to transport the toxic arms to its Mediterranean port, U.S. European Command chief Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove told Al Arabiya News Channel in an interview aired Sunday. “The international community, elements of NATO and the United States are prepared to destroy the chemical weapons,” Ge. Breedlove, who is the 17th Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO Allied Command Operations, said. “We have the existence requirements to address this issue in place, so we encourage Syria to be on schedule and on time to deliver the weapons, so we can get the task accomplished,” he added. Under a timeline drawn up last year, the most toxic chemicals in Syria’s 1,300-metric-ton stockpile were to be removed from the country by Dec. 31. The deadline was missed due to poor security in war-torn Syria, among other factors. Meanwhile, Embattled Syrian leader Bashar Assad is stockpiling weapons of mass destruction rather than handing over them as agreed last summer, the Sunday Times reported, quoting Israeli and Russian sources. The report cites the sources as saying that the WMDs, which include chemical and biological weapons, are being upgraded with North Korean and Iranian assistance, and are believed by the Israelis to be located in Western Syria, in “the heartland of his Alawite sect”. They are to serve, the paper said, “as an insurance policy in case (Assad’s) country is eventually partitioned.”

The bomber had reportedly offered to negotiate with the rebels in the name of ISIS, but detonated an explosive belt inside the headquarters. The attack, which took place in the town of al-Ra’ei, not far from the Syrian border with Turkey, also injured another 20 rebel fighters, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Observatory said the bombings came as fighters gathered at the headquarters to discuss the possibility of a truce in the fighting with ISIS that has raged throughout rebel-controlled areas

No organizational ties link us together, and AQ is not responsible for ISIS’s actions.” Though very significant for Al-Qaeda’s future in Syria, analysts told NOW the move isn’t surprising, and its effects remain to be seen.

How will this Ezekiel 38-39 war end. God tells us that 5/6 of the entire army that attacks Israel will be killed. At the end of the day Israel will have won the Psalm 83 war and the Ezekiel war. The blasts in the town, located about 30 kilometres south of Baghdad, killed nine people and wounded 28. In Baghdad, an explosives-laden car ripped through a commercial area in the northern Hurriyah neighbourhood, killing four people and wounding 11, he added. Three bystanders were killed and nine were wounded in another car bomb explosion in the city’s eastern Baladiyat neighbourhood, another police officer said. Also, a sticky bomb attached to a minibus exploded in Baghdad’s Shiite neighbourhood of Sadr City, Killing one passenger and wounding four others, police said. After nightfall, a car bomb went off near an out-door market in Baghdad’s Abdu Dashir district, killing six shoppers and wounding 14 others, they added. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks but coordinated bombings bear the hallmarks of Al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Iraq. The group, emboldened by the successes of its fellow militants in the civil war next door in Syria and by widespread Sunni anger at the Iraqi government, has taken credit for previous attacks against Shiites, security forces and government buildings.

Rebels fighting the government of South Sudan have accused Juba of breaking a ceasefire, just over a week after the agreement was reached between the two sides. On Monday, the rebels accused the forces royal to South Sudanese President Salva Kiir of destroying the town of Leer. Rebel spokesman Lul Ruai Koang said government soldiers and fighters allied with them “advanced on Leer town on February 1, destroying everything on their path. (President Salva) Kiir’s forces burned down the whole of Leer town and the entire surrounding villages.” The rebel spokesman also held soldiers responsible for killing women, children, and elderly people, saying that the operation in Leer, the home town of former Vice President and rebel leader Riek Machar “has no strategic, operational, or tactical importance.” Meanwhile, officials have denied clashes in Leer and accused the rebels of carrying out deadly attacks against civilians across the country.

Greece’s third bailout is in the making, with a German finance ministry paper leaked to Der Spiegel putting the price tag at €10-20 billion. In a separate interview with Wirtschaftswoche magazine out on Monday (3 February), German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble also said there will be a new Greek package, but noted it will be “far smaller” than the two previous ones, which totalled €240 billion in loans. Talk about a third bailout resumed last week at a finance ministers’ meeting, after the troika of international lenders (the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund) identified a shortfall of €15 billion in Greece’s funding once the current bailout ends this year. But, according to the leaked German paper, Athens will have to speed up its reforms, as fewer than half of the agreed measures have been implemented so far. A second debt restructuring deal, as demanded by the International Monetary Fund, is still not part of the German plan – as it would hit eurozone governments, notably Germany, whose banks now hold most of Greek debt.

The growing problems in the Chinese banking system could spill over into a wider financial crisis, one of the most respected analysts of China’s lenders has warned. Charlene Chu, a former senior analyst at Fitch in Beijing and now the head of Asian research at Autonomous Research, said the rapid expansion of foreign-currency borrowing meant a crisis in China’s financial system was becoming a bigger risk for international banks. “One of the reasons why the situation in China has been so stable up to this point is that, unlike many emerging markets, there is very, very little reliance on foreign funding. As that changes, it obviously increases their vulnerability to swings in foreign investor appetite,” said Ms Chu in an interview with The Telegraph. Ms Chu has been warning since 2009 about the growth of a shadow banking system in China that has helped fuel the credit expansion seen in the country in the wake of the Western financial crisis. Governments must make better use of vaccines and preventative public health policies in the fight against cancer as treatment alone cannot stem the disease, a World Health Organization (WHO) agency said on Monday. The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said cancer was growing “at an alarming pace” worldwide and new strategies were needed to curb the sometimes fatal and often costly disease. “It’s untenable to think we can treat our way out of the cancer problem. That alone will not be a sufficient response,” Christopher Wild, IARC’s director and co-editor of its World Cancer Report 2014, told reporters at a London briefing. “More commitment to prevention and early detection is desperately needed… to complement improved treatments and address the alarming rise in the cancer burden globally.” The report said that in 2012 – the latest year for which data are available – new cancer cases rose to an estimated 14 million a year, a figure expected to grow to 22 million within the next two decades. Over the same period, cancer deaths are predicted to rise from an estimated 8.2 million a year to 13 million per year.

Headline: H7N9 kills two more, causing new infections in China
A 59-year-old man having close contact with live poultry died on Monday morning of the H7N9 flu virus, the first of its kind in central China’s Hunan province, local authority said. A separate statement issued by the health department of Guangdong province on Monday said a patient surnamed Xie died of the virus on Sunday in Foshan after treatment failed. With the new cases, H7N9 has so far killed 25 people in China since January, and the number of human infections has been 113, with Zhejiang and Guangdong being mostly affected. Hunan’s health department said the man killed by the virus, surnamed Li, was a resident with the Longxing District of Louding City. He was among the province’s four human infection cases confirmed this year. Since China ushered in the Spring Festival holiday on Friday, four people have been killed by the virus till Monday, according to local health authorities. The other two deaths were both in Guangdong, involving a 63-year-old in Shenzhen and an 82-year-old man in Foshan. There have been 11 human infection cases reported during the holiday, including two deaths mentioned above. Among the other nine new infections, one was reported to be in a critical situation in Zhangzhou of east China’s Fujian Province.

Sixteen people in Egypt have died from the H1N1 virus – commonly known as swine flu – since the start of the winter, the country’s Ministry of Health said Monday. The ministry’s spokesman, Ahmed Kamel, was quoted by the daily newspaper Al Masry Al Youm as saying that in all, 172 people have been diagnosed with the virus, including those who died. Recent weeks have seen criticism from doctors and patients, who accused the ministry of underplaying the threat of the virus. An official of the Doctors’ Syndicate, a major medical organization, told Egyt’s CBC television that the ministry had been warned weeks ago about the danger of the virus. However, the Health Ministry insisted that the rates of contracting the virus were less than the global average at this time of year. Kamel, the ministry spokesman, said public hospitals across the country were being provided with the drug Tamiflu to help fight the virus. He also denied reports that doctors were among the dead, saying that medical personnel had been vaccinated.

Peruvian officials say more than 400 dead dolphins were found last month on the Pacific Ocean beaches where twice that amount were encountered in 2012. Authorities never established the cause of death in 2012. They are doing autopsies now on the dolphins found in January in the Lambayeque region on the northern coast. Technician Jaime de la Cruz of Peru’s IMARPE marine life agency says about 220 dead dolphins were found the last week of January, the rest during the previous three weeks. De la Cruz says autopsy results are expected in two weeks. Exams will focus on lungs, kidneys and livers. Autopsies of some of the more than 870 dolphins found in 2012 were inconclusive. Speculation ranged from biotoxins in the sea to seismic testing to an unknown ailment.

All the crops were gone. Many houses were damaged and those still standing were covered in thick white ash. The alert level of the volcano was raised today on Kelut or Kelud volcano from 1 (‘normal’) to 2 (“Waspada,” or ‘watch’) on a scale of 1-4. During the second half of 2014, a strong increase in seismic activity and a 5.5 deg temperature increase of the crater lake water had been detected. The number of shallow volcanic earthquakes rose from averages of 1-2 per day to approx 10 per day during 20-31 Jan and climbed to more than 100 events since the start of February alone. This might indicate a shallow intrusion is taking place and could lead to a new eruption. VSI had recommended a 2 km radius exclusion zone from the crater. The last eruption of Kelut was in Oct-Nov 2007, when a new lava dome grew within the crater lake.

An Italian woman watched aghast as her seven-year-old daughter and two other female relatives were swept to their deaths Sunday when an overflowing river in Sicily engulfed their car, media reported. Rain and windstorms have unleashed across the Italian island of Sicily in recent days, leading to swollen rivers and causing widespread flooding. The family members were all traveling in the same small Lancia hatchback before dawn when it was grabbed by the rushing waters in eastern Sicily. The woman and three other occupants made it out and to the safety of the riverbank, but her daughter and two other women remained trapped inside and drowned. Elsewhere on the Italian island, a four-wheel-drive vehicle was also picked up by a raging river, but both occupants were rescued in an operation involving a helicopter. The incidents occurred as Italy suffered a bout of foul weather over the weekend that has unfurled rain and windstorms across the country, making rivers surge and causing widespread flooding. Heavy snowfall in the Italian Alps has disrupted communications and electricity supplies, and resulted in the suspension of some train services with neighboring Austria. The meteorological conditions were expected to last into Tuesday.

A light earthquake has hit south-central Kansas for the second time in weeks. The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded early Monday. The epicenter was about 11 miles northwest of Caldwell, which is on the Kansas-Oklahoma state line in Sumner County. Officials say no damage was reported. A 3.8 magnitude earthquake also shook the same vicinity Dec. 16. Paul Caruso, a USGS geophysicist, told The Wichita Eagle it’s very unusual to have two earthquakes in a short amount of time in that area. Small earthquakes in southern Kansas have become more common, with more than two dozen recorded over the past two years. The area has been the site of increased oil and gas drilling since 2011. Scientists disagree on whether that causes the earthquakes.

Clashes between Muslim and Christian residents have left at least 75 people dead in a single town, a local priest said Monday, while heavy fighting broke out between rebels and peacekeepers in the capital. In Bangui, Muslim militias engaged Burundian troops who returned fire in some of the heaviest fighting since France sent peacekeepers to its former colony in early December. Some 1,600 French and 5,000 African peacekeepers are struggling to keep a lid on the violence. An untold number of people have been slain across the country since March 2013 when heavily armed rebels overthrew the president of a decade, setting off sectarian violence. Father Cassien Kamatari told The Associated Press on Monday that fighting had erupted five days ago in the town of Boda, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) outside Bangui. Muslim victims were buried soon after the attacks so it was not known how many of them also were killed in addition to the toll given by the priest. “Instead of thinking only of Bangui, people must also think of what’s happening in the countryside, because what we are living through in these communities is horrific,” he said.

Four explosions rocked the Yemeni capital of Sanaa Monday, causing some injuries, YemenOnline reported. Two of the blasts struck in the center of Hadda Street near the residence of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, the news website said. Two other explosions were heard near the Ministry of Defense. The report did not say how many people were injured. Elsewhere in Yemen, Shiite Houthi rebels took over a tribal stronghold in Amran, leaders of the Sunni Hashid tribe said Sunday. “Al-Ahmar tribesmen were surrounded by hundreds of Houthi militants who attacked using heavy artillery for 7 continuous hours starting last night,” said Ali al-Suraimi, a Hashid leader. “Hundreds of additional Houthi fighters reinforced those attacking the al-Ahmar fighters. They easily outnumbered the al-Ahmar tribesmen and this was key for the Houthis’ success on the ground.” At least 42 people died and more than a dozen were injured Friday during clashes between the two groups, CNN reported.

Addressing a rally of over 6,000 people in the capital Kiev, former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said on Sunday, “We spoke to our Western partners and told them that we need real financial aid.” World boxing champion and opposition leader Vitali Klitschko also said that there was a need for an international role to avoid “misunderstandings” in negotiations between the opposition and Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Also on the same day, opposition leaders called a new rally at Independence Square in Kiev, urging the protesters to press for more concessions from Yanukovych, including the immediate release of prisoners and the formation of a new government.

Fresh anti-government rallies kick off in the Thai capital a day after protesters disrupted general elections in parts of Bangkok and the south.
