Israel’s Operation Protective Edge entered its 35th day on Monday
Headline: ISIS Actively Joining Gaza Terror War on Israel
Headline: Video Shows ISIS Is Firing Rockets on Israel From Gaza
As Operation Protective Edge holds in a temporary ceasefire, evidence has come out revealing the extent of the extremist Sunni group Islamic State’s (IS, formerly ISIS) involvement in the terror war against Israel from the Hamas stronghold of Gaza. Terror organizations associated with IS and Al Qaeda have been proven to be joining the fight against Israel in Gaza, firing rockets on Israeli civilian population centers and attacking IDF troops. On Sunday the Abdullah Azzam Brigades declared it had fired a Grad missile towards the Israeli town of Mivtahim located near southern Gaza. The announcement comes after similar ones last month by the Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis and Majlis Shura al-Mujahidin organizations. IS terrorists have already been proven to be active in Gaza in a video uploaded by the group in July, showing them firing rockets on Israel. Perhaps more troubling is a Channel 10 report which on Sunday exposed that in recent months black IS flags have been commonly seen in Arab-Israeli towns in northern and coastal Israel, notably in the cities of Nazareth and Akko. Since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge on July 8, the IS and Al Qaeda-associated organizations in Gaza have announced the deaths of at least 13 of their terrorists in the fighting against the IDF and Israel.

Headline: IDF to test tunnel detection system on Gaza border
The Israel Defense Forces in the near future will deploy a tunnel detection system on the border of the Gaza Strip, as part of an operational experiment to examine whether a technological solution could discover the digging of tunnels. According to the military, 300 million shekels ($86.5 million) were spent on research and development in the field of tunnel detection since 2007, but so far without any results. Some 700 different projects were examined and thousands of experiments have been carried out, a senior official disclosed on Monday. Two systems failed in operational experiments conducted on the Gaza border eight years ago. The systems will be now redeployed, after improvements and upgrades have been introduced. If the experiment is a success, a senior IDF officer said on Monday, the military would recommend to deploy the technology along the border with the Gaza Strip, as well as establishing an underground barrier, whether a fence or a wall, in limited areas considered as sensitive – either because the terrain makes the digging of tunnels easier or in the vicinity of strategic sites.

Headline: IDF northern commander: Hezbollah not tunneling on Lebanon border
Headline: Gaza war brings Hamas, Hezbollah closer
Despite growing fears of Hezbollah infiltration using smuggling tunnels similar to those built by Hamas in the south, no such tunnels have yet been discovered, GOC Northern Command Major General Yair Golan told mayors of Israeli towns located along the Lebanon border on Sunday. “The general stressed that at the moment there are no known attack tunnels coming from Lebanon,” said a statement at the end of the meeting. The conference was intended to discuss lessons that could be taken from Operation Protective Edge in the south and applied to the security situation in the north as well as to “address recent reports in the media regarding tunnels on the Lebanon border.” General Golan assured the leaders of the northern communities that while tunnels were not currently the main threat being considered from Hezbollah, lessons had been learned within the military as a result of Operation Protective Edge and the IDF would be prepared to meet such a threat if needed.

Headline: Landmark Terror Finance Trial against Jordan’s Arab Bank Begins
Not immediately clear how Gaza rulers obtained the money, a central issue in the lead-up to current conflict. Hamas has managed to bring millions of dollars into the Gaza Strip to pay the salaries of thousands of workers, a Gaza-based news agency reported on Sunday, after two months in which no such payments were made. According to the Palestinian Sawa news agency, salaries were paid to all members of Hamas’s military wing, and the salaries of government officials in the Strip were expected to be paid as well. It was not immediately clear how Hamas managed to transfer the money into the Strip and/or whether the move was intended to help quell unrest in the Palestinian enclave, as a step toward a possible lasting ceasefire. Payment of the salaries has been one of the key demands by Hamas for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Israel. Egypt has been engaged in trying to broker an end to Operation Protective Edge, which Israel launched on July 8 to halt rocket fire from the Gaza Strip and to destroy a network of tunnels, dug by Hamas under the border and used to launch attacks inside Israeli territory.

Headline: Violence against Jews in East Jerusalem doubles
More than 360 violent assaults against Jews living in East Jerusalem, including the capital’s Old City, were recorded in July, nearly double the number of similar attacks that took place during the same period in 2013, according to figures published Monday. Most incidents involve youths hurling stones and Molotov cocktails at Jewish civilians living in predominantly Palestinian neighborhoods, or rioters setting off firecrackers near Jewish institutions. In some cases, however, masked gunmen opened fire at Jews residing in the eastern half of the city, the Haaretz daily reported. Last Monday, an IDF soldier was shot at close range by a gunman on a motorbike near the neighborhood of Wadi al-Joz. Many of the clashes involved confrontations with police during protests in the city. Police and Housing Ministry figures show that 72 violent incidents took place on the last night of Ramadan alone, compared to an average of five or six such cases a month over the rest of the year.

Headline: US arms rushed to Iraqi Kurds from Jordan, Israel; Al Qaeda-Sinai targets US Negev military facilities
The Kurdish Peshmerga fight against encroaching Islamic State troops gained a broad new dimension Monday, Aug. 11, when the US began airlifting large quantities of military equipment, including ordnance, from Jordan and Israel to the semiautonomous KRG capital, Irbil. The US maintains 10,000 special operations and marine forces at the King Hussein Air Base in northern Jordan, with large stocks of ammunition that were originally destined for the rebels fighting Bashar Assad in Syria. They are now being redirected to the Kurdish effort to stop the rapid Islamist march on their republic, along with supplies from the US emergency stores maintained in the Israeli Negev. debkafile’s military sources reveal that for some weeks, those stores and other US facilities in southern Israel have been in the sights of ISIS elements, which arrived in Sinai six months ago to reinforce Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, the local offshoot of Al Qaeda. The US, Israel and Egypt have taken care to keep this development under their hats. But in the last month, while Israel was engaged in Operation Defensive Edge against the Palestinian Hamas, ISIS and Al-Maqdis shot rockts from Sinai at US and Israeli military facilities in the Negev, in support of Hamas. Their attacks were described by Western observers as intense on some days as the Palestinian rocket barrage against the Israeli population

Headline: Palestinian ambassador: ISIS is not in Ain al-Hilweh
Security forces, along with Municipality Police, launched raids on Syrian refugee gatherings in the Beirut suburb of Dekwaneh, arresting many, a security source told The Daily Star. Although the source declined to specify the number of detainees, they said those apprehended possessed photos of Syrian battlefields stored in their cellphones. The buildings subject to the raids are located in Ras Dekwaneh and housed hundreds of Syrian families. The raids were made in light of the last week’s clashes in Arsal, which pitted the Lebanese Army against militants from Syria, some of whom resided in informal refugee camps in the border region. The fighting raised concerns about refugee gatherings scattered across the country, particularly in the Metn region and Beirut’s northern suburbs, the source said. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil met with Palestinian Ambassador to Lebanon Ashraf Dabbour, who assured the minister that militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria were not present in the Palestinian refugee camps. “ISIS is not in the camps; there are other groups, but the security plan in Ain al-Hilweh … won’t allow any group to meddle with the camps or the security [of areas] in the vicinity,” said Dabbour, in reference to the 150-strong elite force tasked with maintaining security inside the troubled Palestinian refugee camp.

Two officials of the activist group Human Rights Watch claimed Monday they were denied entry into Egypt as they arrived with a report critical of Egyptian security actions. Executive director of the London-based organization, Kenneth Roth, and Middle East Director Sarah Leah Whitson, said in a statement they were detained for 12 hours in Cairo’s airport and then ordered out of the country. They went to Cairo to present a report, to be released Tuesday, of the deaths of over 800 people, which occurred during an Aug. 14, 2013 demonstration in Cairo, when security forces violently dispersed supporters loyal to deposed President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi flies to Russia on Tuesday for a two-day visit where he plans to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, announced presidential spokesman Ihab Badawi. His last trip was defence minister in February where he also met with Putin who wished him luck in the presidential election, before El-Sisi had officially announced that he would run. Egypt is seen by some analysts as drawing closer to Russia, which has strongly backed the country’s transitional road map implemented following last year’s ouster of president Mohamed Morsi. Military contracts worth $2 billion were discussed during a visit by Russian officials to Cairo in November 2013 and subsequently during El-Sisi’s Moscow trip.

Headline: Moderate rebels face worsening situation in Aleppo
Moderate rebel forces are warning that they are in danger of losing their last foothold in Aleppo, once Syria’s commercial center, and that government troops are pressing an offensive that is just three miles from completely cutting rebel supply lines. Rebel commanders interviewed in recent days in the Turkish border town of Reyhanli said their forces’ position has deteriorated in the month since troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad forced them from the city’s primary industrial zone in the east. Rebel counterattacks have failed to dislodge the government troops, and government attacks from the air are taking a huge toll on rebel formations, the commanders said. “We are in dangerous need for weapons, especially anti-aircraft missiles,” said Abdullah Rammah, the leader of the Atareb Martyrs Brigade, one of the fighting units in the city that adheres to the Free Syrian Army’s secular agenda.

Headline: Ukraine forces, rebels battle for Donetsk after separatists move off cease-fire offer
Fighting raged in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk Sunday as government forces closed in on recapturing the last major stronghold of pro-Russian separatists and the rebels backed away from an apparent unconditional cease-fire offer made the day before. The New York Times reported that Sunday saw the government’s most intensive bombardment yet of Donetsk as rebel strongholds in three districts of the city were targeted. Associated Press reporters heard 25 loud explosions in as many minutes around noon. According to city council spokesman Maxim Rovinsky, at least one person was killed and 10 injured in shelling overnight, as more than 10 residential buildings, a hospital and a shop were heavily damaged in the fighting. Few civilians dared to venture outside as explosions rang out every few minutes and burnt-out buses and buildings smoldered from the night before. On Monday, a military spokesman told Reuters that Kiev’s forces had cut Donetsk off from Luhansk, the other rebel-held city in eastern Ukraine, and were preparing a final push to take total control of the city. “The forces of the ‘anti-terrorist operation’ are preparing for the final stage of liberating Donetsk,” Andriy Lysenko said. “We are working for liberating both [Donetsk and Luhansk] but it’s better to liberate Donetsk first – it is more important.”

Headline: Kerry warns Iraqi PM Maliki not to cause trouble
Iraq’s prime minister said he would sue the president Monday in a desperate bid to cling to his job, deploying security forces across Baghdad even as violence raged in the north. A defiant Nuri al-Maliki made his shock announcement after three days of US strikes against jihadist militants in the north of Iraq and in spite of mounting calls for him to step aside. Security sources told AFP of a massive security deployment, akin to measures taken in a state of emergency, across the capital Baghdad. “There is a huge security presence, police and army, especially around the Green Zone,” the highly-protected district that houses Iraq’s key institutions, a high-ranking police officer said. He said the deployment started at around 10:30 pm (1930 GMT), just 90 minutes before Maliki gave his speech. A Shiite Muslim Islamist, Maliki is blamed by his erstwhile allies in Washington and Tehran for driving the alienated Sunni minority into a revolt that threatens to destroy the country. Leaders of Iraq’s Sunni and Kurdish communities have demanded he go, and many fellow Shiites have turned against him. It cannot be said often enough that Maliki himself is NOT an Iranian puppet. He dislikes and distrusts the Iranians, and sees himself as a nationalist who would like to free Iraq from Iran’s clutches.

Headline: US Weighs Operation to Evacuate Yazidis From Iraq Mountains
The United States is exploring options to evacuate thousands of Iraqi civilians trapped on a barren mountain in northern Iraq by Islamic militants, after four nights of humanitarian relief airdrops, U.S. officials said on Sunday. “We’re reviewing options for removing the remaining civilians off the mountain,” deputy U.S. national security adviser Ben Rhodes told Reuters. “Kurdish forces are helping, and we’re talking to the (United Nations) and other international partners about how to bring them to a safe space.” The U.N. mission in Iraq has also said it is preparing a humanitarian corridor to permit the Yazidis to flee to safety. Pollack said there are just two options for securing safe passage for the Yazidis off the mountain. One, he said, is for U.N. representatives to convince Islamic State fighters to let them go or be pummeled by American airstrikes. The second is a corridor secured by peshmerga or Iraq army troops and U.S. airpower. To establish a humanitarian corridor, the United Nations and any nations that participated would have to overcome the Islamic State group’s military advantage over Kurdish security forces, the peshmerga. “Security would have to be provided by the Iraqis, especially the Kurds, with air cover from the U.S. and possibly the British and the French,” a U.N. official said on condition of anonymity.

South Sudan’s rebel leader Riek Machar held talks with Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir Sunday as a deadline passed to end months of civil war in the South. “There are some problems in the negotiations,” he told reporters, citing disagreements over whether talks should occur directly with the government or involve broader representation. “We want to solve the issues that led to the conflict and after that we want to have a transitional government, during which we can write a transitional constitution,” Machar said. “President Bashir can help with this because he has experience when he was president of greater Sudan.” Machar’s delegation said he would leave Sudan on Monday after meeting Vice-President Bakri Hassan Saleh and political party representatives. Meanwhile, National Umma Party (NUP) leader El Sadig El Mahdi said “The Sudanese regime has the choice to accept the Paris Declaration, with its road map for a national peace process and a comprehensive national dialogue, or to “follow the other path” “The Paris Declaration affirms that the peace process can only succeed if the negotiations will be comprehensive, instead of separate talks for Darfur, and South Kordofan and the Blue Nile. Therefore the Sudanese government should accept the contents of the Declaration.” On Friday, the leader of the opposition NUP, and Malik Agar, the chairman of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF, an alliance of the main rebel movements) signed an accord, the Paris Declaration, in which they agreed on unifying the Sudanese opposition in order to end the conflicts in the country, and work on a democratic transformation.

Tunisia
Headline: Tunisia upgrades security strategy
Tunisia on Monday (August 11th) resumed debate on a new anti-terrorism bill. The revival of the measure comes on the heels of new disclosures about the state of Tunisian security. On Friday, the government said it would shut down “internet sites linked to terrorism, and pursue those who use them”. These measures would target web pages that belong to takfiri jihadist militant groups “who incite killings of army personnel and security forces”, a government source told AFP. Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa also authorised the call-up of army reservists to secure the upcoming elections, a government statement said. On Thursday, the interior ministry said it had dismantled five terrorist groups and arrested 21 suspects who were plotting attacks. Co-ordination with Algerian authorities “is ongoing and good”, Interior Ministry Spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui added. “Terrorist groups during Ramadan tried to blow up several factories, including a chemical plant, bridges, shopping complexes and a number of hotels,” Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou told the press two days earlier during an inter-ministerial meeting. During the first-of-its-type meeting last Tuesday with other cabinet members and members of the media, Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa reviewed the host of security challenges facing Tunisia in view of the deteriorating security situation in neighbouring Libya.

Headline:Germany Asks Ukraine to Forgo Sanctions That Threaten Gas Transit to Europe
Germany on Monday demanded that Ukraine forgo its plans to disrupt the transit of Russian natural gas to Europe as part of its proposed sanctions against Moscow. German government spokesman Steffen Saibert was quoted by ITAR-Tass as saying “the federal government believes that Ukraine will not carry on with the measure Prime Minister [Arseniy] Yatsenyuk announced on Friday.” Yatsenyuk on Friday said Kiev was ready to impose a wide array of sanctions on Russia for “sponsoring terrorism, supporting the annexation of Crimea, and violating the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” including putting restrictions on air flights and gas supplies to Europe. The proposed sanctions would also target 172 Russian citizens and 65 predominately Russian companies. Restrictive measures include asset freezes, bans on privatizing state property and the refusal of licenses. The Ukrainian government calculated that the sanctions would cost Ukraine an estimate of $7 billion in losses but said there was “simply no choice” but to implement them.

Headline: SWAT deployed in Ferguson as New Black Panthers join protests- VIDEO
Rumors that the National Guard had been called to deal with rioting in Ferguson, Missouri proved false but many clamored for a more serious response as crowds looted stores and engaged in stand offs with police after the fatal shooting of an unarmed teenager on Saturday night. 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot by police multiple times after an apparent struggle with an officer inside a patrol car. According to reports, the disorder escalated into “full scale riots,” with shots being fired at a police helicopter and looters attempting to steal an ATM from a gas station. With the unrest continuing into the early hours of this morning and SWAT teams arriving, rumors began to fly that the National Guard had been called in, although this soon proved inaccurate.

Headline: Radical action needed as euro zone remains on amber alert
The euro zone’s “softly, softly” approach to the financial crisis is not working. The economy is sinking into deflation, dragged down by a zombie banking system and spiralling government debt. It is slipping back towards recession. A future break-up of the euro zone remains a potent threat. Policymakers can ill afford to keep kicking the can down the road. The bailout earlier this month of Portuguese lender Banco Espirito Santo was a sharp reminder to investors the euro zone was not out of the woods by a long stretch. The root causes of the crisis have not been tackled. High unemployment, chronic underinvestment, poor productivity and falling competitiveness continue to hamper recovery. Banks saddled with toxic loans and tightening capital requirements are starving the economy of much-needed finance. Governments battling burgeoning budgets with tough austerity policies pose a drag on growth. Radical action is required. The European Central Bank has tinkered far too long over quantitative easing – buying bonds and pumping cash back into the markets. In the past five years, it has missed a vital window of opportunity to bring the economy back to strength.

The United States will monitor actions in the South China Sea to see whether “deescalate steps” are being taken, a senior State Department official said on Monday, a day after Beijing repelled U.S. pressure to rein in its actions in the disputed waters. The official spoke as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Sydney for a meeting with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagen and Australian officials to discuss increased defense and cyber security cooperation. A U.S. proposal for a freeze on provocative acts in the South China Sea got a cool response from China and some Southeast Asian nations at a regional meeting at the weekend, an apparent setback to Washington’s efforts to thwart China’s assertive actions.

A woman living in La Plata County tested positive for bubonic plague on Friday. It’s the first case of bubonic plague in the county since 2006, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Claire Macpherson, spokeswoman for San Juan Basin Health Department, said the woman was hospitalized with plague-like symptoms on Saturday. Classical symptoms include the sudden onset of fever, headache, chills, weakness and one or more swollen and tender painful lymph nodes; these are called “buboes,” giving bubonic plague its name. Doctors sent blood samples to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment for testing. The state confirmed that they had identified bubonic plague in her blood culture on Friday. The woman has since been treated with antibiotics and released from the hospital.

Headline: Florida hit by largest ride tide bloom in nearly a decade – thousands of fish killed
The largest red-tide bloom seen in Florida in nearly a decade has killed thousands of fish in the Gulf of Mexico and might pose a greater health threat if it washes ashore as expected in the next two weeks, researchers said. The patchy bloom stretches from the curve of the panhandle to the central Tampa Bay region. It measures approximately 80 miles long by 50 miles wide. Red tide occurs when naturally occurring algae bloom out of control, producing toxins deadly to fish and other marine life. The odorless chemicals can trigger respiratory distress in people, such as coughing and wheezing. “It could have large impacts if it were to move inshore,” said Brandon Basino, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. “It has been killing a lot of marine species, especially fish, as it waits offshore.” The agency has received reports of thousands of dead fish, including snappers, groupers, flounders and bull sharks, as well as crabs, eels and octopi. This is the largest bloom seen since 2006. The phenomenon has existed for centuries, but such a large bloom is being closely monitored in Florida because it could affect beach tourism and commercial fishing.

Headline: IBM develops a computer chip with one million ‘neurons’ that ‘functions like a human brain’
IBM has developed a computer chip which it says will function like a human brain in a giant step forward for artificial intelligence. TrueNorth is being hailed as the world’s first neurosynaptic computer chip because it can figure things out on its own. The chip also has one million ‘neurons’ and could cram the same power as a super computer into a circuit the size of a postage stamp. Experts said that it was as big an advance as the advent of supercomputers in the 1980. Horst Simon, deputy director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, told the New York Times: ‘It is a remarkable achievement in terms of scalability and low power consumption’. Modern processors have some 1.4 billion transistors and consume up to 140 watts but the IBM chip contains 5.4 billion transistors and uses just 70 milliwatts of power, meaning it is incredibly efficient.

At least 10 people have been killed and dozens of others injured as a powerful typhoon slammed into western and northern Japan. Typhoon Halong hurtled across the Japanese archipelago over the weekend, with heavy rain still lashing the country’s north. The public broadcaster, NHK, reported that a total of 96 people have suffered injuries as a result of the heavy storm. More than 700 flights were called off during the weekend due to the typhoon. Violent winds also destroyed more than 460 buildings in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, on Sunday, injuring at least two people. Over half a million residents were ordered to evacuate their homes late on Saturday in Japan’s western regions, where mudslides and flooded rivers were reported. Another 600,000 people were advised to evacuate across the country. Typhoon Halong moved over the Sea of Japan on Monday and lurched towards Russia’s far-east coast.
