Headline: Netanyahu lays out Israeli case for morality of Gaza campaign
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday night set out a moral justification for the way the IDF has dealt with the Hamas strategy of firing rockets at Israel, and tunneling under the Israeli border, from the heart of Palestinian residential neighborhoods in Gaza. Arguing that Israel’s battle over the past month against terrorists in Gaza using civilians as human shields came during a critical test period, he said it would be a “moral mistake” as well as a practical one to not take action against terrorists operating from mosques, schools and other civilian areas. Such behavior would represent “an enormous victory for terrorists everywhere,” he said, and would result in more and more civilian deaths around the world. “What’s happening now is not only a test for Israel but for the international community, for the civilized world itself, [for] how it is to defend itself,” Netanyahu declared at a press conference on the second day of a 72-hour ceasefire that began on Tuesday morning.

Headline: UN chief Ban: Attackers of UN shelters must be held accountable
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday called for the end of the cycle of violence that has plagued Gaza for years, as Palestinians were considering extending the cease-fire that went into effect the day before. Addressing the UN General Assembly at an informal meeting on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Ban called for swift investigation of the attacks on UN. premises and other suspected breaches of international law. “UN shelters must be safe zones, not combat zones. Those who violate this sacred trust must be subject to accountability and justice,” he said. “Mere suspicion of militant activity does not justify jeopardizing the lives and safety of many thousands of innocent civilians.”

Headline: Arab ministers to visit Gaza, Turkey seeks air corridor
A delegation of Arab foreign ministers, including those of Egypt and Jordan, will visit Gaza “soon” in a show of support for Palestinians, Arab League chief Nabil Al-Arabi said Wednesday. The ministers will also assess reconstruction needs in the battered enclave after a nearly month-long war between Israel and Hamas, Arabi said.
“An Arab ministerial delegation will go to Gaza soon in solidarity,” he told reporters. The delegation, which is expected to expand, so far includes the foreign ministers of Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan and Morocco, as well as Arabi himself. On the second day of the truce, Turkey said it has began talks with Israel and Egypt about establishing an air corridor to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza and evacuate potentially thousands of injured Palestinians for treatment in Turkey.

IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz says Israel is prepared to strike Hamas leaders when they emerge from hiding, and warns that the IDF will retaliate strongly if the terror organization resumes its attacks on Israel. He adds that the responsibility for the civilian casualties lies with Hamas, as they are embedded in civilian areas, and says the IDF has struck a significant blow to the terror organization. “We aren’t done,” he says. “If there are incidents, we will respond to them.”

Headline: Israel agrees to extend current Gaza ceasefire; Hamas vows to renew fire
Headline: As Cairo Talks Begin, Hamas Vows Never to Disarm
Israel has reportedly agreed to extend the current ceasefire in Gaza Strip Wednesday as indirect Israel-Palestinian negotiations over extending a truce in Gaza got underway in Cairo. However, Hamas was quick to deny the reports, saying it will renew fire at Israel as soon as the current lull has ended. The official did not say for how much longer Israel had agreed to extend the truce, only that: “Israel has expressed its readiness to extend the truce under its current terms,” referring to the deal brokered by Egypt that took effect on Tuesday. Hamas began a media blitz as soon as reports of an extended ceasefire began, with its spokesmen claiming that if their demands weren’t met, especially the call to end the siege on Gaza, they would renew fire. A source within the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades said that the brigades “will renew their aggressions as soon as the ceasefire ends Friday 8am.”

Headline: Hamas pressured to accept Egypt’s cease-fire demand
Izzat al-Rishq, member of Hamas’ political bureau participating in the Cairo negotiations, told Al-Monitor that the movement “approved of Egypt’s call for a 72-hour cease-fire, as of 8 a.m. on Aug. 5 and of the launch of indirect negotiations regarding the truce conditions, based on the demands agreed on among the Palestinian delegation and presented to the Egyptian side.” An Egyptian official close to the negotiations told Al-Monitor that the United States pressured Israel, while Qatar and Turkey pressured Hamas to agree to the cease-fire. “Public and secret efforts preceded the call for a cease-fire, and there was pressure on all parties to reach this stage, which might put an end to the raging war. The UN and the US administration have played a role to influence Israel, as did Qatar and Turkey with Hamas. Moreover, the battlefield in Gaza has madly flared up, which means that the alternative would be a new wave of actions and reactions and more victims.”

Headline: Report: Egypt to Open Rafah Crossing – If PA Takes Control
Germany, France and Britain proposed reactivating a European Union mission to reopen the Rafah crossing on the Egypt-Gaza border to help stabilise the Palestinian enclave after a month-long war, a German diplomatic source said on Wednesday. The source said German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and counterparts in France and Britain favoured restoring the crossing that is the main window to the world for isolated Gaza’s 1.7 million Palestinians. Meanwhile, Arab news sources reported Wednesday that Egypt has agreed to open the crossing between it and Gaza at Rafah, on the condition that the Gazan side be supervised by the Palestinian Authority under Mahmoud Abbas, and not by Hamas. Hamas has reportedly agreed to this, mostly because it is now a part of the PA government, since joining Abbas’s Fatah in a unity coalition.

Headline: Deputy British PM: Suspend Arms Exports to Israel
Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, on Tuesday called for arms exports to Israel to be suspended. Clegg’s call came after Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, a British minister who was the first Muslim woman to sit in the Cabinet, resigned over the British government’s policy on Gaza. “I think the question marks that Sayeeda Warsi has raised about the arms export licenses which we issue to arms exporters selling to Israel are very serious ones and I share her concerns”, the Liberal Democrat leader said in a statement on his website. “It’s obvious to me that however much Israel has every right to defend itself from those rocket attacks from Hamas, nonetheless the Israeli military operation overstepped the mark in Gaza,” he continued.

Headline: Gazans who have lost everything want Hamas to resume fighting
Gaza, like the cities of Israel, is slowly returning to normal. Kind of. There are cars on its roads once more, and shoppers are flooding its markets. “We became accustomed very quickly to war – and even faster to peace,” Sameh, a prominent political analyst in Gaza, told The Times of Israel Wednesday. But the quiet, he said, is deceptive. “It’s not over yet. Hamas is under a lot of pressure to return to fighting if Egypt and Israel don’t allow the blockade to be lifted,” Sameh said. The residents of the Gaza Strip are torn between wanting the fighting to go on and wanting it to stop, he added. “Those who have lost their children and relatives actually want the fighting to continue. So do those whose houses were destroyed,” he said. “They don’t have anything to lose anymore, and they are pressuring [Hamas] not to stop now unless the blockade is lifted completely. On the other hand, those whose houses are still standing want it to end.”

Headline: Hamas Encourages Suicide Bombers to Dress as Orthodox Jews
Headline: Hamas tells Gazans over Facebook: Stop Exposing Terrorist Deaths
Hamas terrorists have been encouraged to dress up like ordinary Orthodox Jews, according to Palestinian Media Watch, to carry out suicide attacks on Israeli civilians. Hamas repeatedly broadcasted a video encouraging the attacks, as well as the disguise, according to the watchdog group. The Hamas video glorifies a terrorist dressing up in a black hat, black Hassidic coat or bekishe, and tzitzit – and fully decked with long peyot or sidelocks and a beard – before arming himself with explosives. Suicide bombers and kidnappers often are instructed to dress as Jews, in order to blend in with local population undetected before committing a terror attack. One prominent example of this strategy is the 2001 Sbarro’s suicide bombing, whereby terrorist Ahlam Tamimi dressed up as an Israeli university student to help bomber Izz al-Din Shuheil al-Masri enter the restaurant undetected. The bombing killed 15 people and wounded over 130.

Headline: Iran, Al Qaeda took note of curbs on IDF vanquishing Hamas
Eyes there carefully tracked each stage of the Gaza conflict, after he was understood to have raised it to a level comparable to the war on Al Qaeda. So,after curtailing the operation against Hamas, Israel may find its hand has landed in a new wasps’ nest. At this moment, the Islamic State and Syrian Nusra Front are fighting to extend their Syrian and Iraqi footholds by a push into Lebanon. They may not stop there. If the jihadists on the march were permitted to judge the IDF incapable of vanquishing Hamas, they might turn to Israel and pose it with an extremely dangerous new threat. Iran too will have taken note of the fact that, twice in two years, Israel’s leaders abstained from bringing to a victorious conclusion a war started by military forces which Tehran had fortified, trained and funded – first Hizballah in the 2006 Lebanon war, which ended in a draw, and now the contest with the Palestinian Islamists which ended in similar fashion.

Dozens of armored-personnel carriers and tanks were seen on the road heading towards the Arsal area. Syria’s civil conflict has evolved into a four-front war involving a fight between Islamic State and Damascus, between IS and mainstream rebels, another between the rebels and Assad – and finally one between IS and Syria’s Kurdish militias. Headline: Libya’s Extremists Tighten Grip Over Benghazi
An umbrella group for eastern Libya’s extremist militias announced Wednesday that it had overrun three more army bases in the eastern city of Benghazi and seized large amounts of heavy weapons, including armored vehicles, as they tightened their grip on the country’s second city. The Benghazi Revolutionary Shura Council, composed of extremist militias like Ansar al-Shariah, posted pictures of its leaders posing in front of tanks, multiple rocket launchers, and artillery they claimed to have seized from the bases they overran. The pictures could not be independently verified but in the past weeks the militants have seized several other bases belonging to the remnants of the Libyan army. An official in the city confirmed the militias’ recent victories and said they were now shelling the army’s remaining strongholds on the outskirts of the city. Ansar al-Shariah is branded a terrorist organization by Washington and is accused of orchestrating the deadly assault on US mission in Benghazi in 2012 killing four Americans including US Ambassador Chris Stevens. The Islamist militias launched a counteroffensive after units loyal to Gen. Khalifa Hifter, attempted to dislodge them from the city months earlier. Despite support from several army units, including the elite special forces, Hifter’s troops have largely been driven out of the city and are now cornered in the Benina airport outside the city. The security official said that the militias have been pounding the airport with grad rockets. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The ongoing violence between Libyans is creating a tragic humanitarian crisis that affects the lives of the most vulnerable and threatens Libya’s democratic transition. We call upon all Libyans to reject terrorism and violence and to replace it with political dialogue to end the instability that is spreading across the country. We call on Libya’s newly elected Council of Representatives and other democratic institutions to adopt inclusive policies that benefit all Libyans and to build a government that meets the Libyan people’s needs for security, reconciliation, and prosperity.

Headline: Marzouki Implores West to Increase Military Support to Tunisia
Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki asked western countries to increase military assistance to Tunisia in an address to an audience at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC, Wednesday. In the wake of recent attacks against Tunisian soldiers near Chaambi Mountain and elsewhere along the country’s mountainous border with Algeria, Marzouki criticized western countries for what he sees as their failure to support his government with the necessary military equipment and training to combat Tunisia’s ongoing “terrorist” threat. “We didn’t have the support we expected from the U.S.,” Marzouki said. “We expected more. […] If Tunisia fails, you can say goodbye to democracy in the Arab world for a century.”

Headline: FM: TURKEY STEPS UP EFFORTS TO REBUILD GAZA
In a statement made after the 72-hour cease-fire in Gaza was called, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu stated that Turkish aid organizations on the ground in war-stricken Gaza are working quickly to rebuild Gaza and help Palestinians return to their ordinary lives. Turkey has welcomed Egypt’s proposal of a 72-hour cease-fire in Gaza that came into effect at 08:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Turkey urged Israel to stop its attacks on the Gaza Strip and called on both sides to avoid any steps that would violate the threeday cease-fire. “We wish that this truce will form the required basis for negotiations to reach a lasting cease-fire in Gaza,” a statement by the Turkish foreign ministry read. “It should be understood that a lasting cease-fire in the region will only be possible with the lifting of the blockade in Gaza,” it added.

Headline: Russia to host talks with leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan
Leaders of arch-foes Armenia and Azerbaijan are expected to meet for talks hosted by Russia as fears grow that military clashes may lead to a resumption of one of the bloodiest post-Soviet wars. The disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh has seen fierce fighting since last week between Azeri government forces and ethnic Armenian separatists. It is described as the worst flare-up of violence in years for the breakaway enclave that lies within Azerbaijan but has a majority Armenian population. Armenian snipers targeted two children, one aged 9 and the other 14. Both children were taken to hospital for treatment. The breakaway enclave said one of its men was killed by a soldier from the Azeri side. That raises the number killed killed on both sides to at least eighteen. Azerbaijan’s relations with Armenia remain severely strained. Nagorno-Karabakh has run its own affairs, backed by Armenia, since a war two decades ago killed around 30,000 people. Despite a 1994 ceasefire, international mediation has failed to secure a permanent settlement.

Luke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword. Luke 21:9: wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions) Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)

You have heaped up treasure in the last days.” (James)
Headline: Italy falls back into recession
Italy’s economy has fallen back into recession, latest official figures show, after contracting for two quarters in a row. GDP, the value of all the country’s goods and services, shrank 0.2% in the second quarter of the year. The surprisingly weak number follows a 0.1% contraction in the first quarter. Economists consider two quarters of shrinking GDP means a country is in recession. At the end of last year the country appeared to be emerging from recession, growing fractionally in the last three months. But since then the numbers have been getting worse.

Headline: Suspected Ebola victim dies in Saudi Arabia
Global health experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) are meeting to discuss new measures to tackle the Ebola outbreak. The meeting is expected to last two days and will decide whether to declare a global health emergency. On Wednesday, a man suspected to have contracted Ebola died in Saudi Arabia. If confirmed, this will be the first Ebola-related death outside of Africa. The virus has killed nearly 900 people since February in West Africa. The outbreak began in February in Guinea, and has since spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. On Wednesday a nurse became the second person to die from Ebola in Nigeria. Nigeria’s health minister said five other cases of Ebola were being treated in isolation in Lagos, sub-Saharan Africa’s largest city. It comes as leading infectious disease experts have called for experimental treatments to be offered more widely.

Headline: West African healthcare systems reel as Ebola toll hits 932
Health workers in West Africa appealed on Wednesday for urgent help in controlling the world’s worst Ebola outbreak as the death toll climbed to 932 and Liberia shut a hospital where several staff were infected, including a Spanish priest. The outbreak of the haemorrhagic fever has overwhelmed rudimentary healthcare systems and prompted the deployment of troops to quarantine the worst-hit areas in the remote border region of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 45 new deaths in the three days to Aug. 4. Its experts began an emergency meeting in Geneva on Wednesday to discuss whether the epidemic constitutes a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” and to consider new measures to contain it, including the possible use of experimental drug treatments.

Headline: Tainted Ohio water coming under increased scrutiny
Ohio’s governor is promising an extensive review of how the water supply for 400,000 people in Ohio and Michigan became tainted with a toxin over the weekend while a high-ranking state lawmaker is planning hearings on the blooms of algae fouling Lake Erie. The water problems that led to a state emergency in Ohio’s fourth-largest city and forced thousands to avoid drinking tap water for more than two days is certain to come under intense scrutiny in the coming months. “This is not just one community issue, this is the whole lake,” said state Rep. Dave Hall, who wants to bring in experts to look at the cause of the blooms and how they’re influenced by weather, farm runoff, manure management and wastewater treatment facilities. Toledo’s mayor lifted the water advisory Monday morning after dozens of tests over the weekend showed an algae-induced toxin contaminating Lake Erie had dropped to safe levels following intensive chemical treatments.
