Three terrorists opened fire on a group of policemen near Lions' Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday morning, killing two Israeli police officers and injuring two more before the attackers were killed by police. The attackers were later identified by the Shin Bet as 29-year-old Muhammad Ahmad Mahmoud Jabarin, Muhammad Ahmed Fadel Jabarin 19, and Muhammad Hamed 'Abd al-Latif Jabarin, 19, from Umm el-Fahm in northern Israel.  The assailants fled to the Temple Mount where they were killed by police officers. Israel Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said guns were found in their possession. Jerusalem Chief of Police Yoram Halevi has ordered the Temple mount closed and evacuated, and Friday prayers at the site were cancelled. All gates to the Old City of Jerusalem have been closed.

Headline: Riots in Jerusalem

Police units on Monday evening dispersed rioters who fired fireworks directly at them, in the Silwan neighborhood of Jerusalem. Police units used non-lethal weapons and continue to patrol the areas. At the entrance of the neighborhood of Isawiah, a number of masked suspects threw firebombs and fired fireworks at police units patrolling the area. Police dispersed the rioters with non-lethal weapons. No injuries were reported. Earlier on Monday evening, dozens of Arabs threw stones and blocked the Maale Mota Gur road in Jerusalem. Police forces drove the rioters out using riot control measures. At the same time, dozens of Arabs gathered near the Lions' Gate and attacked policemen. The Arab riots are part of the Arab protest against the metal detectors at the entrances to the Temple Mount following the murderous attack on Friday. During the day, hundreds of Muslim worshipers came to the Al-Aqsa mosque but did not enter and prayed outside the Temple Mount to protest the placing of the magnetometers. This morning, police allowed Jews to go up to the Temple Mount for the first time since Friday's attack, in which two policemen were murdered. The Jews who came to the Mount were not accompanied by the Muslim Waqf, who usually chaperone Jewish tours of the area.

Headline: Jerusalem Comes Off the Table With Advance of “United Jerusalem Bill”

Legislation preventing the division of Jerusalem in a possible peace deal is advancing through the Knesset, making it increasingly unlikely that the holy city will become a Palestinian capital in the future. Nicknamed the “United Jerusalem Bill”, the bill was approved on Sunday morning by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation, allowing it to continue through to the Knesset floor. First proposed by Education Minister Naftali Bennett (Jewish Home), the bill places a large legal stumbling block before any parties hoping to split Jerusalem into separate Israeli and Palestinian territories in pursuit of a peace deal. If the bill is passed, a supermajority, or three-fourths, of Knesset members will be required to approve any negotiations calling for Jerusalem’s division, rather than the usual majority. Gaining the approval of three-fourths of the Knesset would be a difficult task.

Syria

Headline: Israel: Syrian truce plan license for Iran foothold

Israel waited 10 days from Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin’s announcement in Hamburg of their ceasefire plan for southwestern Syria along the borders with Jordan and Syria, before proclaiming its “total opposition” to the plan. On Sunday, July 16, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced publicly, after meeting President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, that the plan was unacceptable. An official in the party that accompanied him to the Elysée Palace explained to reporters that Israel objected to a truce that could be used as a vehicle for “perpetuating” Iran’s presence in Syria and on its own border. Iran is not just sending advisers to Syria, the official said, but large-scale military forces to establish in Syria an airbase for Iranian aircraft and a naval base for Iran's navy. “This already changes the picture in the region from what it has been up to now," he said. According to debkafile’s military and intelligence sources, Israel was finally galvanized into making an unqualified stand against the US-Russian ceasefire plan by discovering how it was being implemented: When last week Russian troops moved into Daraa in southern Syria to police the ceasefire in that embattled town, the Syrian army withdrew – but the Hizballah forces fighting with Assad’s army did not. A few days later, Hizballah’s elite Kalibat Radwan brigade was seen digging in at Daraa, 1km from the Jordanian border, and preparing to resume the offensive at a moment’s notice for driving Syrian rebels from the town. This was despite the assurances Washington and Moscow had broadcast that the departure of Iranian and Hizballah forces from the ceasefire zones would be ascertained. Since Quneitra is the next zone scheduled for the application of the ceasefire, Israel requested clarifications from Washington and Moscow. When they went unanswered, the Israeli prime minister proclaimed total objection to the plan before the Daraa template is replicated in an area abutting its Golan border.

Headline: Syrian army captures more oil wells in Raqqa province

The Syrian army supported by Iranian backed militias seized new oil fields in the desert in the southwest of Raqqa province on Monday in new advances against retreating Islamic state militants. The Syrian army said on state media they had taken al Daylaa oil field alongside the Zamla gas field in large stretches of territory the militant group have been pulling out of in recent weeks to defend their remaining possessions in Syria. On Saturday the army said they taken control of Wahab, al Fahd, Dbaysan, al-Qseer, Abu al Qatat and Abu Qatash oil fields and several other villages in the desert area that lies in the southwest of Raqqa province. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Syrian army, supported by Iranian-backed militias from Iraq and Lebanon, was now on the edge of the Bushra chain of mountains, a main militant hideout 55 km west of Deir Zor city.

Turkey

Headline: Defiant Erdogan attacks EU, backs restoring death penalty

President Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday defiantly stepped up his attacks on the European Union, saying Turkey had to go its own way and vowing to bring back the death penalty if parliament passed it. At the opening ceremony of a memorial dedicated to the roughly 250 people who died in last year's failed coup, Erdogan accused Brussels of "messing about" with Turkey's decades-long bid to join the bloc. The speech in the early hours of Sunday wound up a marathon session of public appearances by Erdogan in both the capital and Istanbul overnight to mark the anniversary of last year's defeated coup. "The stance of the European Union is clear to see … 54 years have passed and they are still messing us about," he said, citing what he said was Brussels' failure to keep promises on everything from a visa deal to aid for Syrian migrants. "We will sort things out for ourselves. There's no other option."

Headline: Iran's Revolutionary Guards Warn US Against Terrorist Designation, New Sanctions

Headline: Iran’s army chief of staff threatens to target US forces in the region

A senior commander in Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned the United States on Monday that if it designated the group a terrorist organization and applied new sanctions its action could be perilous for U.S. forces in the region. U.S. officials said earlier this year that President Donald Trump's administration was considering a proposal that could lead to potentially categorizing the powerful Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization. In Mid-June the U.S. Senate voted for new sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program and other activities not related to the international nuclear agreement reached with the United States and other world powers in 2015. To become law, the legislation must pass the House of Representatives and be signed by Trump. "Counting the Revolutionary Guards the same as terrorist groups and applying similar sanctions to the Revolutionary Guards is a big risk for America and its bases and forces deployed in the region," said Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad Baqeri, according to Sepah News, an official news site of the Guards.

Headline: Afghan forces retake district in southern province of Helmand

Afghan security forces backed by U.S. air strikes have retaken a southern district from the Taliban as part of a drive to weaken the insurgents' hold on Helmand province and push them back from around its capital, Lashkar Gah, officials said on Monday. A two-day offensive, supported by numerous air strikes from U.S. F-16 fighters and Apache helicopters, launched on Saturday saw security forces take the district centre of Nawa, to the south of Lashkar Gah, officials said. More than 50 fighters were killed and vehicles and equipment were destroyed, said defence ministry spokesman General Dawlat Waziri. Over 100 improvised explosive devices were also disabled, Task Force Southwest, the U.S. Marine Corps-led training and assistance mission in Helmand said in a statement.

Headline: Venezuela opposition turns heat up on Maduro with strike call

Venezuela's opposition called on Monday for a national shutdown against President Nicolas Maduro in a major escalation of protests against a leftist government it accuses of flouting the people's will. "We are not going to allow the destruction of Venezuela. The whole country overwhelmingly rejects the Maduro regime," said opposition leader Freddy Guevara, announcing the first 24-hour strike in nearly four months of anti-government demonstrations that have led to some 100 deaths. The opposition – which wants restaurants, shops and transport to come to a standstill on Thursday – said it would also take steps to set up a "national unity" government and name new alternative judges to the pro-Maduro Supreme Court. That raised the possibility of a parallel state structure to challenge government-controlled institutions. The opposition said it brought 7.6 million people out on Sunday for an unofficial vote intended to de-legitimize a man they call a dictator. Maduro's foes are demanding a presidential election and want to stop his plan to create a controversial new legislative super-body called a Constituent Assembly in a July 30 vote.

Headline: 8 killed in Nigeria suicide bombing

Eight people were killed on Monday when a female suicide bomber detonated her explosives at a mosque in northeast Nigeria, in the latest attack in the restive region. The head of the Borno state emergency management agency, Ahmed Satomi, said the blast happened at about 5:30 a.m. in the London Ciki area of Maiduguri, which has been at the epicenter of Boko Haram violence since 2009.
“She killed eight people and injured 15 others. The mosque was being guarded by civilian JTF (joint task force militia) during prayers,” he told AFP. “Unknown to them, the girl was being pursued from another part of town by residents who were suspicious of her movement at the time. “When she approached the mosque, they demanded that she stop to be searched, but she suddenly bolted into the mosque and set off her bombs.” Three other female suicide bombers were located in Maiduguri at about the same time, said Satomi. Two were killed in the Mammanti area, as they tried to cross the ditch around the city perimeter while another set off her explosives in the suburb of Simari, he added. Borno state Police Commissioner Damian Chukwu said the first two were killed shortly before midnight while the third was intercepted shortly after.

Headline: Massive eruption of the 'Mountain of God' volcano in Tanzania is IMMINENT

A massive eruption of the 'Mountain of God' volcano in Tanzania is imminent – and it could wipe out key sites in human history, scientists have warned. Also known as Ol Doinyo Lengai, the 7,650ft (2,331m) volcano is less than 70 miles away from where footprints left by our ancestors 3.6 million years ago have been discovered.Researchers studying the tremors of the volcano have now warned it may erupt 'any second', destroying the invaluable sites forever. In January of this year, the scientists recorded a shudder in their data, indicating that parts of the volcano were lifting upwards. 'Several subsequent signals were also seen in real-time with additional on-the-ground observations by our local technician,' Dr Sarah Stamps, a geophysicist at Virginia Tech, told National Geographic.  'These signals prompted rapid responses by our team to install three new real-time stations.' Further signals, including an increase in gas emissions and earthquakes, have led the scientists to conclude that an eruption is now 'imminent'. 'Imminent in our case means in one second, in a few weeks, a couple of months, or a year or more,' said Dr Stamps. 'There are increased ash emissions, earthquakes, uplift at small volcanic cones, and an ever widening crack at the top of the volcano on the west side.

IDF soldiers came under fire overnight Tuesday during an operation in the West Bank city of Jenin, according to the army. An IDF statement said that Palestinian gunmen opened fire at the forces and hurled explosive devices toward them. The soldiers returned fire. Palestinian media reported of two killed and one injured in the exchange of gunfire. The IDF said it was investigating the reports. Headline: Trump envoy Greenblatt facilitates historic Israeli-Palestinian water deal

US Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt announced Thursday that Israel and the Palestinians have reached an agreement concerning the long-discussed Red Sea-Dead Sea Canal, which includes the sale of 33 million cubic meters of water to the Palestinian Authority to relieve the water situation there. Greenblatt, at a press conference with Regional Cooperation Minister Tzahi Hanegbi and PA Water Authority head Mazen Ghuneim, said this agreement and the accord signed Monday between Israel and the PA that will significantly increase the power supply to Jenin are examples of how the two sides can cooperate to improve Palestinian living conditions.Greenblatt cut off any questions in the press conference, however, that dealt with more than the water deal. He said this deal, and the electricity deal, are examples of “cooperation between Israel and the Palestinians that will lead to economic improvement in the lives of the Palestinians.”

Headline: Palestinians warn ending payouts to jailed terrorists could trigger crisis

International pressure on the Palestinian Authority to halt payments to the families of Palestinians held in Israeli jails, including those convicted of deadly terror attacks, could trigger a political crisis, rights groups say. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is caught between pressure from US President Donald Trump’s administration and a potential backlash from Palestinians, most of whom view their prisoners as heroes. Those killed carrying out attacks against Israelis are regularly venerated as “martyrs.” Israel currently detains some 6,500 Palestinians for a range of offenses, including a number of deadly terror attacks. It says making payments to the families of attackers encourages further violence, accusing the Palestinian leadership of incitement amid a wave of attacks that began in 2015 and has persisted at a low simmer since. But Palestinians say such payments are a key source of income for families who have in many cases lost their main breadwinner. They are also symbolically important after decades of yearning for elusive statehood and struggle against Israel. A recent poll showed that 91 percent of Palestinians oppose suspending stipends to those in Israeli jails for security-related offenses.

Headline: Russians enter Daraa, Syrians/Hizballah move out

Russian troops stepped into southern Syria for the first time Wednesday, July 13, when they entered the embattled town of Daraa to start enforcing the partial ceasefire agreed by Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Hamburg on July 7.  debkafile’s military sources report this exclusively. The Russians, including military police and Chechen paratroopers, were sighted getting out of the vehicles of their convoy and taking up positions in the center of Daraa. As they moved into the town, our sources report that tank units of the pro-regime Syrian army’s 5th Armored Division were seen driving out, along with Hizballah. Their withdrawal cut short the Syrian military’s Operation Big Dawn against the Syrian rebels in Daraa, which breached the ceasefire Monday, July 11 – less then 24 hours after it went into force. The Russian deployment in a southern Syrian border town Wednesday was the first step in their posting along Syria’s Israeli and Jordanian borders, as agreed between Washington and Moscow. President Trump had assented to this arrangement to bolster the first stage of the Syrian ceasefire going into effect in the de-confliction zone of the southwest.

US troops are already operating inside the town of Raqqa, ISIS’ last major bastion in Syria, a US official said Wednesday. He said the American troops are not in a direct combat role, but are calling in air strikes. A suicide bomber rammed a car laden with explosives into a gathering of jihadist rebels near the rebel-held northwestern Syrian city of Idlib on Wednesday, killing and injuring scores, rebel sources said. At least 12 were killed, one rebel source said. The jihadist alliance has been waging in the last few days a major sweep to round up ultra-hard-line Islamic State sleeper cells in Idlib province. Headline: Female suicide bombers in Cameroon kill at least 15

At least 15 people are dead after two female suicide bombers carried out the latest attack in Cameroon’s far north, the government said Thursday, and another 42 people are wounded. The attackers entered the town of Waza late Wednesday and one detonated explosives near a group of youths, Governor Midjiyawa Bakary said. Nigeria-based Boko Haram extremists have been crossing borders to stage attacks in countries, including Cameroon, that contribute to a military force that seeks to eliminate the insurgency. The Islamic extremists have killed more than 20,000 people in their eight-year existence and abducted thousands of others. Boko Haram increasingly has used girls and young women to carry out attacks on marketplaces, checkpoints and other targets. Some young women who escaped the extremist group have said girls are drugged and forced to carry out suicide missions.

Headline: Tuareg Separatists Seize North Mali Town in Battle

Tuareg separatists have seized a town in Mali’s desert north from a pro-government ethnic Tuareg militia after days of fighting, the separatists and a local legislator close to the government side said Wednesday. Fighting between rival Tuareg factions has intensified and threatens to derail a 2015 peace deal meant to end years of conflict and instability in the landlocked West African nation, a major gold producer. The rebel Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) and the pro-government Gatia are locked in a bitter power struggle in northern Mali, despite the return of state authority to its cities in March for the first time since a 2012 Tuareg uprising. “Anefis has been under the control of the CMA since yesterday. Preparations are being made to retake it,” Ahamoudane Ag Ikmasse, a Gatia-allied local lawmaker in the nearby major city of Kidal told Reuters by telephone. CMA spokesman Redouane Ag Mohamed Ali confirmed that Anefis, a town in the Sahara desert, had been taken.

Headline: China Dispatches Troops To Djibouti To Set Up Its First Overseas Base

China dispatched troops to set up its first military base overseas on Tuesday. After a ceremony in the southern port city of Zhanjiang, military personnel embarked on a voyage to the East African country of Djibouti to establish an outpost “conducive to China’s performance of international obligations,” state-run media report. The base is generally intended to “assist China’s contribution to peace and stability both in Africa and worldwide,” according to the Xinhua News Agency. Specifically, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said that means supporting anti-piracy efforts in the region, performing “humanitarian rescue” and helping to “drive Djibouti’s economic and social development.” Reuters reports that the small country, which is on the Horn of Africa, perched at the mouth of the Red Sea, already boasts U.S., French and Japanese military bases. In fact, as NPR’s Renee Montagne noted when China broke ground on the base last year, the U.S. has its own major base in the same port city where China is establishing its military presence.

Headline: In Rare Move, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Joins Trump Envoy in Meeting With Palestinians

U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Jason Greenblatt, met the Palestinian negotiators in Jerusalem on Tuesday as part of talks to renew the peace process. Haaretz has learned that in a rare move, the meeting was also be attended by U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, who, by virtue of his position, is in charge of ties with Israel. The fact that Friedman joined the meeting marks a shift in U.S. policy in place from the time of both the Bush and Obama administrations. A senior White House official stated that Greenblatt, Friedman and American Consul General in Jerusalem Donald Blome had an “open, cordial and frank” discussion with the Palestinian team on a number of matters related to the peace process. The Trump administration believes, he told Haaretz, that in order for an ultimate deal to be reached it is critical that the American negotiators are those closest to President Donald Trump. That is why the team includes Kushner, Greenblatt and Friedman, he said. The meeting, slated to take place in Jerusalem, is expected to be attended by the chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, the head of the Palestinian intelligence, Majid Faraj, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ economic adviser, Mohammad Mustafa.

Iraq’s prime minister on July 9 said Mosul has been liberated after a 9-month battle with Islamic State (ISIS). After ISIS took control of Mosul in June 2014 following the Obama administration’s pullout of U.S. forces, local Kurdish Peshmerga fighters fought ferociously to block the terror group from advancing further into northern Iraq. The U.S.-backed coalition aided the recapture of Mosul by providing much-needed air support and targeted bombing attacks against ISIS positions, officials said. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared Mosul’s liberation complete as he toured the city, much of it in ruins, with members of the Iraqi armed forces. “The commander in chief of the armed forces Haider al-Abadi arrived in the liberated city of Mosul and congratulated the heroic fighters and the Iraqi people on the achievement of the major victory,” a spokesperson for al-Abadi said. Iraqi forces are next expected to launch an offensive on ISIS’s only remaining stronghold, in Tal Afar, roughly 40 miles west of Mosul.

Turkey

Headline: Huge crowd rallies in Istanbul against Turkey’s post-coup crackdown

Turkey’s main opposition leader told a huge protest rally on Sunday that the country was living under dictatorship and pledged to keep challenging the crackdown launched by the authorities after last year’s failed military coup. Addressing hundreds of thousands of people waving Turkish flags and banners demanding justice, Kemal Kilicdaroglu said his 25-day march from Ankara to Istanbul – culminating in Sunday’s rally in Istanbul – was the first stage of a long campaign. “We will be breaking down the walls of fear,” he told the crowd who gathered to welcome him at the end of his 425 km (265 mile) trek from the Turkish capital. Kilicdaroglu’s protest march drew only modest support in its early days, but as more people joined him it grew into the biggest protest yet against the year-long, post-coup crackdown launched by President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party. “The last day of our Justice March is a new beginning, a new step,” said Kilicdaroglu, a bespectacled, 68-year-old veteran politician. “Rights, law, justice,” the crowd chanted back. He called on the government to lift a state of emergency enforced after the abortive July 2016 coup, release scores of journalists from prison and restore the independence of Turkey’s courts.

Headline: Libya clashes leave four dead east of Tripoli: ministry

Clashes between forces loyal to Libya’s unity government and rival fighters east of Tripoli have left four people dead including at least two civilians, the health ministry said. Another 21 people were wounded in the fighting on Sunday and Monday in Garabulli about 60 kilometers (40 miles) east of the capital, the ministry said overnight on Facebook. Two foreign workers, whose nationalities were unclear, were among those killed, it said. Clashes broke out on Sunday evening between forces loyal to the Government of National Accord and fighters aligned with former prime minister Khalifa Ghweil who refuses to recognize the UN-backed government in Tripoli, witnesses said. The violence was continuing at dawn on Tuesday, they said. Pro-GNA forces backed by dozens of tanks and pick-up trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns deployed east of the capital heading for Garabulli on the weekend, the witnesses said.

Headline: Syrian Observatory says it has ‘confirmed information’ that Islamic State chief is dead

Headline:US can’t confirm al-Baghdadi death reports

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters on Tuesday that it had “confirmed information” that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed. The report came just days after the Iraqi army recaptured the last sectors of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, which Baghdadi’s forces overran almost exactly three years ago. Russia’s Defense Ministry said in June that it might have killed Baghdadi when one of its air strikes hit a gathering of Islamic State commanders on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa. But Washington said it could not corroborate the death and Western and Iraqi officials have been skeptical. Reuters could not independently verify Baghdadi’s death. “(We have) confirmed information from leaders, including one of the first rank who is Syrian, in the Islamic State in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zor,” said Rami Abdulrahman, the director of the British-based war monitoring group. In Iraq, U.S. Army Colonel Ryan Dillon, spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State, said he could not confirm the news. Abdulrahman said activists working with him in Deir al-Zor had been told by the Islamic State sources that Baghdadi had died, but not when or how. The sources said Baghdadi had been present in the eastern countryside of Syria’s Deir al-Zor province in the past three months. The Pentagon said it had no information to corroborate the reports. Kurdish and Iraqi officials also had no immediate confirmation.

Headline: National Guard patrol hits roadside bomb in Venezuelan capital

A powerful roadside bomb went off during massive anti-government protests in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, leaving seven members of the National Guard injured. Footage taken at the scene shows a powerful explosion hitting a convoy of National Guard officers riding motorcycles.Seven officers were injured in the blast, commander-in-chief of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) Major General Sergio Rivero Marcano confirmed to the Venezuelan media, adding that five of them suffered third-degree burns while two others received second-degree burns. It is still unclear who exactly was behind the explosion, as no group has taken responsibility for it so far. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro praised the GNB officers for their work and accused opposition leaders and protest organizers of “terrorism” and “instigating violence,” according to the news outlet El Espectador. The incident took place on Monday in the Altamira Sur residential district of the Venezuelan capital, amid massive anti-government protests. According to the Venezuelan media, the blast hit a detachment of the National Guard deployed to disperse a “group of violent protesters” trying to blockade the Francisco Fajardo highway.

Headline: Over 500 dead in Marawi battle with IS

The death toll in a protracted battle between Islamic State-allied militants and government troops in the southern Philippine city of Marawi has topped 500, the military says. Ninety of the dead were soldiers and police officers, while 39 were civilians killed by the militants in Marawi City, 800 kilometres south of Manila, said Brigadier General Restituto Padilla. At least 381 of the dead were militants killed in the fighting which began on May 23 after government forces attempted to arrest a local leader of the Islamic State terrorist group, he added. Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana denied a local media report that up to 2,000 civilians had been killed in the conflict.

Headline: US moves Patriot missiles near Russian borders in 1st Baltic deployment

The US military has deployed Patriot anti-aircraft systems to the Baltics with the stated goal of taking part in NATO war games, Lithuania’s Defense Ministry said. It’s the first such deployment to a region already in the midst of a Western military buildup. The Patriots arrived in Lithuania as part of the ‘Tobruq Legacy 2017’ air defense drills, which will run until July 22, the Lithuanian Defense Ministry said in a press release. The exercise will involve about 500 troops and 30 various air defense systems, the ministry said, without providing details on the size of the US task force or number of Patriot batteries. The deployment demonstrates the steadfast US commitment to the security of Lithuania and its high readiness to send strategic capabilities to the region,” it said. Apart from Lithuania, ‘Tobruq Legacy 2017’ will be conducted in the Czech Republic and Romania under the auspices of NATO’s Joint Force Air Component Command. It will also involve militaries from three more NATO allies: the UK, Latvia and Poland. It is the first deployment of Patriot systems to the Baltic region amid a massive NATO military buildup. Since the start of the Ukrainian crisis in 2014, NATO has accused Moscow of aiding the rebels who rejected the Western-backed Euromaidan coup in Kiev, and began deploying troops to the region.
The bloc’s members currently maintain several multinational battalion strike groups and air force units patrolling Baltic airspace on a rotational basis. The buildup has been followed by a series of massive military exercises on Russia’s doorstep.

Headline: Yemen cholera cases pass 300,000 as outbreak spirals – ICRC

A cholera outbreak in war-torn Yemen is thought to have infected 300,000 people in the past 10 weeks, the International Committee of the Red Cross says. The situation has continued to “spiral out of control”, with about 7,000 new cases every day, the ICRC warned. More than 1,700 associated deaths have been reported, according to the UN. Yemen’s health, water and sanitation systems are collapsing after two years of conflict between pro-government forces and the rebel Houthi movement. Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera. Most of those infected will have no or mild symptoms but, in severe cases, the disease can kill within hours if left untreated. On 24 June, the World Health Organisation declared that Yemen was facing “the worst cholera outbreak in the world”, with more than 200,000 suspected cases. In just over two weeks, another 100,000 people have been infected – an increase the ICRC’s Middle East regional director Roberto Mardini called “disturbing”.

Headline: Church of England Votes in Favor of ‘Marking’ Gender Transitions with Religious Ceremony

The General Synod of the Church of England has voted to ‘welcome transgender people’ by considering preparing a church service as a way to “mark a person’s gender transition”. The official church of the United Kingdom voted four to one in favour amongst the Clergy and more than two to one amongst the Laity (members who are not Clergy) at the four-day Synod, the motion reading: “That this Synod, recognising the need for transgender people to be welcomed and affirmed in their parish church, call on the House of Bishops to consider whether some nationally commended liturgical materials might be prepared to mark a person’s gender transition.” Vicar of Lancaster Priory Church, Chris Newlands, posed the motion to the Synod, saying he would speak on behalf of transgender people as the church’s Synod has none. He said: “We need to be aware of the impact that our actions – be them welcome or rejection – have on the members of the trans community.

Headline: Feds hire researchers to merge brains, computers

The federal government has reached contract agreements with six entities, five research groups and a company for the Neural Engineering System Design program designed to merge human brains with computers, according to a report in Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin. The Biological Technologies Office announced this week that the contracts – with Brown University, Columbia, the Seeing and Hearing Foundation, John B. Pierce Lab, Paradromics and Cal-Berkeley – focus on the next stage of a strategy to blend the human brain with hard drives and memory chips. Justin Sanchez, director of the Biological Technologies office for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, said the organization has been pioneering “brain-machine interface technologies since the 1970s.” Since the 2000s, when doors started opening for new capabilities, the agency has “invested hundreds of millions of dollars transitioning ‘neuroscience’ into ‘neurotechnology’ with a series of cumulatively more advanced research programs that expand the frontiers of what is possible in this enormously difficult domain.”

Headline: Palestinians: UNESCO vote proves Israel’s Jerusalem narrative false

UNESCO has proved that Israel’s narrative with regard to Jerusalem is false, the Palestinian Authority and Hamas said on Wednesday after the World Heritage Committee disavowed Israeli sovereignty over the city. Hamas spokesman Abudllatif al-Qanoun, in a statement to the press, claimed that UNESCO’s resolution demolishes the false Israeli narrative and asserts the Palestinian right in Jerusalem and al-Aksa Mosque. PA spokesman Yousef al-Mahmoud made a similar statement to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. Mahmoud called on the international community to “enforce these decisions on the ground in order to lift injustice, oppression and domination practiced by the occupying power against our steadfast people in the city of Jerusalem and against its Islamic and Christian holy places.” The resolution also took issue with Israeli “executions” in and around Jerusalem’s Old City as well as Israel’s “failure” to allow a UNESCO monitoring team to visit Jerusalem. The 21-member World Heritage Committee on Tuesday approved the resolution 10-3 with abstentions as part of its annual affirmation of Jerusalem’s Old City and its walls on its list of World Heritage in Danger.

Headline: Netanyahu, Putin said to discuss southern Syrian buffer zone

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday as part of ongoing Israeli efforts to convince Russia and the United States to establish a demilitarized buffer zone in southern Syria, according to reports. Israel is pushing for an agreement that would prevent “Hezbollah or other Iranian-backed militias” from operating in the area, which would extend some 30 miles (48 kilometers) beyond the Israeli-Syrian border on the Golan Heights, the Times of London reported Thursday, citing “sources in the Middle East.” That would include the bitterly disputed city of Daraa, where Sunni rebels have fought bloody battles against regime and Hezbollah forces in recent months. Netanyahu has repeatedly discussed the issue with Putin and US President Donald Trump, the report said. Separate media reports said Israel, Jordan and the US had arrived at a separate understanding that any end-of-conflict agreement would leave only Syrian forces in a band along the Israeli and Jordanian borders in Deraa Province — that is, no militias like Hezbollah that are loyal to Iran.

Headline: Qatar: We have too much money to worry about what Saudi Arabia does to us

Qatar has said it has too much money to worry about Saudi Arabia cutting diplomatic ties with the country. “We have sovereign wealth funds of 250 per cent of gross domestic product, we have Qatar Central Bank reserves, and we have a ministry of finance strategic reserve,” the country’s finance minister Ali Sharif al-Emadi told The Times. His comments came after Saudi Arabia and its allies promised greater sanctions against Qatar, after announcing last month they would sever formal links with their neighbour which they accused it of supporting terrorism.Qatar’s credit rating agencies have downgraded the country’s financial prospects, but Mr al-Emadi said Qatar still had better finances than its rivals.  “Bahrain and Egypt, they are at junk bond level,” he said. “If you look at Saudi Arabia, they are having genuine issues with their finances. “We are the fastest-growing country in the region, 40 per cent faster than the nearest Gulf Co-operation Council country [the UAE].” Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain said they will “take all necessary political, economic and legal measures” against Qatar in a “timely manner”. They did not specify what those steps could include.

Syria

Headline: US, Russia Reach Deal on Syria Cease-fire

The United States and Russia have reached agreement on a cease-fire in southwest Syria, three U.S. officials said Friday as President Donald Trump held his first meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The deal marks a new level of involvement for the U.S. in trying to resolve Syria’s civil war. Although details about the agreement and how it will be implemented weren’t immediately available, the cease-fire is set to take effect Sunday at noon Damascus time, said the officials, who weren’t authorized to discuss the cease-fire publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Jordan and Israel also are part of the agreement, one of the officials said. The two U.S. allies both share a border with the southern part of Syria and have been concerned about violence from Syria’s civil war spilling over the border. The deal is separate from “de-escalation zones” that were to be created under a deal brokered by Russia, Turkey and Iran earlier this year.

Iraq

Headline: Facing defeat in Mosul, ISIS mounts diversionary attack to the south

ISIS militants attacked a village south of Mosul, killing several people including two journalists, even as they were about to lose their last redoubt in the city to an Iraqi military onslaught, security sources said on Friday. The assault on Imam Gharbi village appeared to be the sort of diversionary, guerrilla-style strike tactics ISIS is expected to focus on as US-backed Iraqi forces regain control over cities ISIS captured in a shock 2014 offensive. Security sources said ISIS insurgents had infiltrated Imam Gharbi, some 70 km south of Mosul on the western bank of the Tigris river, on Wednesday evening from a pocket of territory still under their control on the eastern bank. The Iraqi military has forecast final victory this week in what used to be the de facto capital of ISIS’s “caliphate” in Iraq, after a grinding eight-month, US-backed offensive to wrest back the city, whose pre-war population was 2 million. But security forces faced ferocious resistance from roughly several hundred militants hunkered down among thousands of civilians in the maze of alleyways in Mosul’s Old City.

Turkey

Headline: EU parliament calls for Turkey accession talks to be suspended

The European Parliament called on Thursday for Turkey’s European Union accession talks to be suspended if Ankara fully implements plans to expand President Tayyip Erdogan’s powers, in a vote which Turkey dismissed as flawed and wrong. The parliament has limited influence on Turkey’s decades-old pursuit of EU membership, now in limbo after bitter exchanges between Ankara and some European countries, but the decision highlighted the gulf which has grown between the two sides. EU leaders have been critical of Erdogan and his behavior toward opponents, both before and after an abortive military coup against him last July. A year-long crackdown since the failed coup and the sweeping new powers which Erdogan won in a tightly fought referendum in April have raised concerns among Turkey’s Western allies.

Dozens of police officers built moving lines in different parts of Hamburg and used water cannons to force protesters away from streets across the city. The city boosted its police presence with reinforcements from around the country for the G-20 summit but asked for more support on Thursday night after the situation started to escalate.  At least 45 demonstrators were arrested, 15 were temporarily detained, and 160 police officers were injured early Friday, including three officers who were hospitalized.  Hamburg’s fire department said 11 protesters were severely injured and had to be transported to hospitals after a few of them fell from a wall during confrontations with police.

Headline: US bomber planes fly over East and South China Seas

The US has flown two bombers over East Asian waters, as tensions continue to run high in the region. The B-1B Lancers took part in joint military drills with Japan in the East China Sea, the US Air Force said in a statement. They then flew over the highly contentious South China Sea. On Tuesday, North Korea test-fired a long-range missile some believe could reach Alaska, sparking concerns over its weapons capabilities. A statement by the US Pacific Air Forces said the flights with Japan “demonstrate the solidarity between Japan and the US to defend against provocative and destabilising actions in the Pacific theatre”. Tuesday’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) by North Korea sparked a warning from the US that it would use military force “if we must”. Headline: Untreatable gonorrhoea ‘superbug’ is spreading worldwide, WHO experts warn

At least three people worldwide are infected with totally untreatable “superbug” strains of gonorrhoea which they are likely to be spreading to others through sex, the World Health Organisation has warned. Giving details of studies showing a “very serious situation” with regard to highly drug-resistant forms of the sexually-transmitted infection (STI), experts said it was “only a matter of time” before last-resort gonorrhoea antibiotics would be of no use. At least three people in Japan, Spain and France have been found to be infected with the untreatable strain, which they could have spread to others.Dr Wi, who gave details in a telephone briefing of two studies on gonorrhoea published in the journal PLOS Medicine, said one had documented three specific cases of patients with strains of gonorrhoea against which no known antibiotic is effective. “These are cases that can infect others. It can be transmitted,” she told reporters. “And these cases may just be the tip of the iceberg, since systems to diagnose and report untreatable infections are lacking in lower-income countries where gonorrhoea is actually more common.”

Headline: 6.5-magnitude quake kills 2, injures 100 in central Philippines

At least two people died Thursday after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines, seismologists and authorities said. The quake struck Leyte Island on Thursday morning at a depth of just 4 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was triggered by movement along the Philippine Fault. Two people were reported dead, along with more than 100 injured. One was killed in a collapse of a three-story building, Kananga Mayor Rowena Codilla said. Others were initially trapped. The earthquake struck off the coast of Jaro, a community adjacent to Karanga, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. No tsunami warning was issued.

Headline: Massive Meteor Strikes Moon!

A METEOR with the explosive power of TEN cruise missiles has struck the Moon – sparking massive explosion visible with the naked eye.And terrifyingly the 56,000 mph collision – captured by NASA scientists highlighting the catastrophic danger planet earth faces from similar meteors – was caused by a space rock weighing no more than 88 lbs (40 kilos). Despite the meteor’s tiny proportions – about the size of a small boulder and the weight of an average 10-year-old boy – the impact damage was colossal and the explosion shone with the brightness of a magnitude 4 star.A similar strike against a city on earth would create a crater 65feet (20m) deep and create a devastating kill zone equivalent to TEN Tomahawk cruise missile striking in exactly the same place. Experts fear the death toll would run into thousands. Unlike the Moon the Earth has a protective atmosphere meaning most space debris burns up before it can impact.  But bigger meteors sometimes get through – most recently at Chelyabinsk in Russia where a 20 metre asteroid travelling at 43,000 mph breached the atmosphere and exploded with the power of 33 Hiroshimas.

Headline: Abbas to Africa: No Israel ties without end to military rule

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday told African states that improved ties with Israel should be calculated in relation to the Jewish state’s commitment to ceasing its military rule over Palestinian territories. Over the past year, Israel has launched an intensive effort bolster its ties with African states, making inroads in a continent that has long refrained from enhancing such cooperation. “The Israeli state of occupation’s efforts to participate in your regional conferences and organize continental conferences encourages it to continue its arrogance, occupy Palestine and deny the Palestinian people’s rights,” Abbas told the 29th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “We hope that the advancement of the continent’s relationship with Israel is linked to the extent of its commitment to ending the occupation.” Abbas also urged African states to support international efforts to end Israel’s military rule. “We are looking for you to support the end of [this bitter reality]… by turning to international councils and institutions to preserve our national rights and implement the two-state solution,” he said.

Headline: PLO official slams US envoy Haley for leading anti-Palestinian ‘crusade’

A senior Palestinian official on Wednesday blasted US President Donald Trump’s United Nations envoy, accusing her of carrying out a “crusade” against the Palestinian people. Hanan Ashrawi, an senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said Nikki Haley was leading a “one-woman crusade … against Palestine and the Palestinian people individually and collectively.” “Through an obsessive and targeted campaign of intimidation and threats, Miss Haley’s crusade does not miss an opportunity to put pressure on anyone that seeks to challenge Israeli impunity,” she added.  Palestinian officials have privately expressed increasing alarm at the Trump administration’s pro-Israel stance, as the US president seeks to restart peace negotiations. However, until Wednesday, they had publicly refrained from criticizing senior US officials. Haley visited Israel and the Palestinian Authority territories in June. Ashrawi said Haley was “compounding the victimization of the Palestinian people and browbeating the institutions that are meant to defend their rights”. The statement was distributed by the PLO.

Syria

Headline: Astana Peace Talks Fail over Syrian Safe Zones

The fifth round of Russian-initiated Syrian peace talks taking place Tuesday, July 4, in the Kazakh capital of Astana was designed to prepare the ground for the Trump-Putin summit Friday on the sidelines of the Hamburg G20 summit, by laying out proposals for deconfliction zones in Syria. To support this move, Moscow twisted the Syrian ruler Bashar Assad’s arm to declare a unilateral ceasefire in southern Syria. However, the ploy was soon aborted. The Astana conference quickly broke down when Iran and Turkey, two of the three sponsors along with Russia, rejected the formula for deconfliction zones on Syria’s borders with Iraq, Jordan and Israel, debkafile’s sources report. Present at Astana along with the three sponsors were leading Syrian opposition and rebel groups, as well as UN envoy for Syrian affairs Staffan de Minstura, US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Stuart Jones, and Jordanian Foreign Ministry adviser Nawaf Uasfi Tal. The Iranina and Turkish delegates had no objections to the two demilitarized zones proposed for the Damascus and Homs areas, but withheld their consent for the zones in eastern and southern Syria, and refused to accept the formula for forces policing the latter deconfliction zones, their identity, powers as truce monitors and the types of arms they were allowed to carry. Iran and Turkey demanded the deployment of their own troops along with Russians in the two safe zones, which border on Israel, Jordan and Iraq, and wanted them armed for “self-defense.” The representatives of the US and Jordan refused, proposing instead that an international force be established to supervise the zones. Turkey and Iran rejected this out of hand.

Headline: Raqqa: IS ‘capital’ wall breached by US-backed Syrian forces

US-backed Syrian forces have breached the wall at Raqqa’s Old City as they try to retake the city from so-called Islamic State, the US military says. It says the coalition had helped the advance of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) by firing on two sections of the historic Rafiqa Wall. The SDF, supported by US-led coalition air strikes, has spent months encircling the city. IS seized Raqqa in 2014, proclaiming it the capital of a “caliphate”. The city has been an important hub for the jihadist group’s operations, though as the SDF closed in, key IS officials are believed to have fled from there towards Deir al-Zour province, which is mostly under IS control. About 2,500 IS militants are still in Raqqa, according to the US-led coalition, with about 100,000 people trapped by the fighting in the city.

Headline: Syrian Army and allies achieve major advance against ISIS in Homs

With most of the anti-ISIS efforts of pro-government forces being directed against the terrorist group in far eastern Homs Governonate, eastern Hama Governonate, Raqqa Governonate and in the Syrian Badia, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defence Forces (NDF) have now further increased military pressure on the Islamic State by attacking its forces south of Jib Jarrah in central Homs. Today, the SAA and various national militias, supported by the Russian Aerospace Forces (RuAF), advanced south of the town of Jib Jarrah and captured three new points situated 8 kilometers east of the Jbab Hamd area. The advance was by no means without event. Resistance was encountered from ISIS who is heavily embedded in the semi-mountainous, partial desert region. With the conclusion of clashes for the day and the resulting withdrawal of ISIS forces from the combat zone, the terrorist group left behind at least 15 dead fighters.

Headline: Iraqi PMU repels massive ISIS offensive near border with Syria

The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) have repelled a massive ISIS offensive near the Iraqi-Syrian border. The attack by ISIS was a cross-border operation, being launched out of Syrian territory towards PMU forces in the area of Tal Saffuq. ISIS appears to have undertaken the offensive against the PMU at Tal Saffuq from three directions, employing a large contingent of storming troops, motorised vehicles (namely Toyota pickups) and fire support weapons. The PMU reacted efficiently to the shock attack, holding their positions and inflicting heavy casualties on ISIS to the point where the terrorist group was forced to withdraw.

Headline: Kurdish YPG militia says Turkey “declaring war” in northwest Syria

The head of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia told Reuters on Wednesday that Turkish military deployments near Kurdish-held areas of northwestern Syria amounted to a “a declaration of war”, signalling the risk of a major confrontation. Asked whether he expected a conflict with Turkey in northern Syria, where the two sides have exchanged artillery fire in recent days, Sipan Hemo accused Turkey of preparing for a military campaign. “These (Turkish) preparations have reached level of a declaration of war and could lead to the outbreak of actual clashes in the coming days.” he said. “We will not stand idly by against this potential aggression.”

Two other American soldiers were also wounded but their injuries were not expected to be life threatening and they were receiving medical treatment, the statement said. The Trump administration is considering adding several thousand troops, largely in a training and support capacity. Headline: Govt supporters storm Venezuela congress, injuring lawmakers

Pro-government militias wielding wooden sticks and metal bars stormed congress on Wednesday and began attacking opposition lawmakers during a special session coinciding with Venezuela’s independence day. Four lawmakers were injured. One of them, Americo de Grazia, had to be taken in a stretcher to an ambulance suffering from convulsions, said a fellow congressman. “This doesn’t hurt as much as watching how every day how we lose a little bit more of our country,” Armando Arias said from inside an ambulance as he was being treated for head wounds that spilled blood across his clothes. The attack, in plain view of national guardsmen assigned to protect the legislature, comes amid three months of often-violent confrontations between security forces and protesters who accuse the government of trying to establish a dictatorship by jailing foes, pushing aside the opposition-controlled legislature and rewriting the constitution to avoid fair elections. Tensions were already high after Vice President Tareck El Aissami made an unannounced morning visit to the neoclassical legislature, accompanied by top government and military officials, for an event celebrating independence day.

Headline: North Korea launches ballistic missile

North Korea launched an unidentified projectile into the sea off its east coast on Tuesday (local time), South Korea’s military said, according to Reuters. The projectile, which the South Korean military also described as a ballistic missile, was launched from the North’s western region. North Korea has violated international sanctions and UN revolutions, and has continuously carried out nuclear tests and ballistic missile tests. The isolated country has conducted five nuclear tests since 2006, including two last year. Last week, U.S. officials said North Korea conducted another rocket engine test which could potentially be used on a future intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The latest test comes several days after U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the U.S. had “run out of patience” with North Korea over its nuclear drive.

Headline: Transgender ‘Sam Doll’ Aims to Teach Children in Canada About ‘Gender Identity’

In recent years we have been hearing a lot about “gender fluidity”, and this is yet another example of that phenomenon. The distinctions between men and women are being blurred, and there are many that would like to eliminate them altogether. Given enough time, could we eventually get to the point where it is just as acceptable for men to wear skirts and heels as it is for women? Apparently Thom Browne wants us to have these kinds of conversations… Gender fluidity in style is no longer a thing for only women, but men too. Thom Browne, an American designer seems to think men should embrace the trend too and rock a few pieces ‘borrowed from the girls’. His spring summer collection presented at the ongoing Men’s fashion week had a slew of dress shirts, tunics, maxi dresses and skirts all worn with pointy toe heels. Who says what a man should and shouldn’t wear? The collection seems to drive a conversation many of us never want to have. And, if a woman can wear a pantsuit, why can’t a man wear a skirt suit? Probably, this is what the designer wanted to us to talk about.

Headline: 102 shot, 14 fatally, in Chicago over July 4 holiday weekend

The violence plaguing Chicago made international headlines Wednesday, after a violent and bloody Fourth of July weekend. Of the 102 people shot since Friday night, 14 have died. Police said most of the shootings happened Monday night on the South and West sides of the city. Detectives said they believe several of the shootings were motivated by gang retaliation, and alcohol was a factor in many others. Police across Chicago worked around the clock over the holiday weekend. There was a surge in the July 4 death toll. Since midnight, six people died in shootings. In one of the most recent shootings early Wednesday morning, two men were shot and killed and two were injured after several men in a black SUV fired shots at people on a porch near East 110th Street and South Eberhart Avenue in the city’s Roseland neighborhood. Police carried out anti-violence raids over the holiday weekend, hoping to prevent this kind of bloodshed. But the numbers reflect a very sad weekend.

On June 27, 2017 I Published a video on the mass deaths of birds, fish, and animals at the end of the video I gave you the warning about the Great Earthquakes that were coming. The very next day there was a 6.0 quake and, the next day another 6.0 quake. As you will see from today's news there was yet another large quake.

X

Asas

If you want to see exactly what I warned you about concerning these Great Earthquakes you can watch the video below that I posted June 27, 2017.

A good watchmen for the Lord will keep his eyes on events to see if they match up with what Jesus and the prophets warn us. One of the prophecies I am keeping my eyes on coming from Revelation chapter 12 concerning the Virgin with 12 stars.  I have also been keeping my eyes on events that happen on the Jewish feast days because it is very possible we may see more prophetic events fall exactly on those feast days.  Jesus Christ has already fulfilled 4 of the prophecies on the Spring Feast Holidays.  It is very possible Jesus will pick up from where He left off.  The next feast to be fulfilled is the Feast of Trumpets as you see from the photo below.  Is it possible that this September 23, 2017 may be the time Jesus has chosen to fulfill this prophecy?  I am sure you will find the video below just as interesting as I did.  All I can say is this. If Jesus has picked this Feast of Trumpets to begin the final last day prophecies I am ready. The question is, are you?  It wouldn't be long before we all know for sure because September 23 is rapidly heading toward us.  For more information about the Jewish Feasts download my prophecy book and read the last chapter entitled: The Rapture.

Headline: Israel gears up for Jerusalem sovereignty fight in UNESCO

Israel is pushing to sway the 21 nations on UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee to reject a resolution disavowing Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem, when the committee meets in Krakow, Poland, July 2-12. The diplomatic battle comes at the same time Israel is dealing with the American Jewish community over the centrality of the Western Wall as a global Jewish symbol.  Diplomatic sources told The Jerusalem Post, however, that they did not believe American Jewry’s anger over the cancellation of an egalitarian prayer section at the Western Wall would distract Israel in its campaign for UNESCO recognition of the Jewish and Israeli connection to Jerusalem. Jordan submitted a resolution on Jerusalem on Monday that calls to rescind “all legislative and administrative measures and actions taken by Israel, the occupying Power, which have altered or purport to alter the character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem.” This includes the basic law on Jerusalem, the resolution states.

Headline: Israel strikes Hamas bases in Gaza after rocket: officials

Israeli airstrikes hit a series of targets in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip overnight Monday, officials said, hours after a rocket from the Palestinian enclave landed in the Jewish state. Strikes were recorded in at least three locations in Gaza, Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses said, with Hamas bases struck near the southern city of Rafah and Gaza City, as well as open land southeast of Gaza City. The Israeli army said the strikes were in “response to projectile fire that hit near the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council.” “Two (Israeli) aircrafts targeted two military infrastructures belong to the Hamas terrorist organization,” it added. That rocket, fired a few hours earlier, landed in an open area close to Israeli border communities without causing any injuries. The rocket was claimed by a previously unheard of Salafist group.

Headline: Fighting intensifies in Syrian Golan Heights

Fighting between government forces and opposition fighters has intensified in the Quneitra province in Syria's south, situated in the 30 percent part of the Golan Heights under Syrian control. More than a dozen people were killed, including both pro-government forces and opposition fighters, in the latest increase in fighting in the countryside of al-Baath city and near the town of Khan Arnab, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Sunday. The deaths came as the al-Qaeda-linked Levant Liberation Committee [Hayat Tahrir al-Sham] and allied anti-government groups launched an offensive to take control of al-Baath city, one of the few towns in the province that has remained under control of Syrian government forces in recent years. Also on Sunday, Israeli fighter jets targeted Syrian government positions in the region for a second day in a row, reportedly destroying a handful of tanks. The UK-based SOHR reported that the strikes killed two Syrian army soldiers and injured several others.

Headline: Israel Strikes Syria After Spillover Hits Golan Heights During Netanyahu Visit

Errant fire from the Syrian war hit the Israeli Golan Heights on Wednesday, the Israeli military confirmed. There were no damages or casualties. Israel struck Assad regime targets soon after the incident in response. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was attending a ceremony marking 40 years since the establishment of the town of Katzrin in northern Israel at the time of the fire. Israel will not allow for an Iranian presence in the Golan Heights, Netanyahu said during his remarks. "We are always amazed that there is still someone who says we will return the Golan," said the prime minister. "The Golan is our and the Golan will always be ours. The Golan is ours because it belonged to our forefathers, and because it was taken back by us due to Syrian aggression." Netanyahu also threatened that, "Those who fire into our territory will encounter a swift response."

The sources pointed out that “Only one outpost separates the Yemeni army forces from full control of that region.”

Egypt

Headline: Hamas building buffer zone along Gaza-Egypt border

Hamas began constructing a security buffer zone between the Gaza Strip and Egypt on Wednesday in an attempt to improve relations with Cairo. The buffer, which will include observation towers, cameras and lighting, will be 100 feet wide and 7.5 miles along the southern border of the strip's coast and the Sinai Peninsula, the Hamas interior ministry said. The construction of the buffer zone "is a reassuring message directed at the Egyptian side that the national security of Egypt is the national security of Gaza," Tawfiq Abu Naim, a security chief of the Gaza-based group, said in the statement. "These continuing measures are for the sake of achieving control of the southern border and to completely prevent infiltration and smuggling," he added. "We can not allow any threat to the stable security situation on the southern border." He said the project was agreed upon during a nine-day visit to Egypt by a high-level Hamas delegation to Egypt earlier this month.

Headline: Egyptian warplanes hit arms convoy from Libya

Egyptian warplanes struck a convoy of 12 vehicles about to be driven across the border from Libya carrying weapons and ammunition, the military said on Tuesday. The military said in a statement that it had acted on “intelligence indicating a number of criminal elements had gathered to cross the border into Egypt using a number of four-wheel-drive vehicles.” An official in the armed forces told AFP the vehicles had been on the move from Libya. Air force units found “the hostile targets, confirmed their coordinates and dealt with them for more than 12 hours,” the military said, without specifying when the raids were carried out. “The operation led to the targeting and destruction of 12 four-wheel-drive vehicles carrying quantities of weapons, ammunition, and explosive materials,” it added.

Syria

Headline: Syria chemical attack may be being prepared, US warns

The US says Syria's government appears to be preparing for a chemical weapons attack and has warned that it will "pay a very heavy price" if one takes place. The White House said similar activities had been seen before the nerve agent Sarin was allegedly dropped on rebel-held Khan Sheikhoun in April. Dozens of people were killed, prompting President Donald Trump to order a missile strike on a Syrian airbase. Syria's government denies it is preparing a chemical attack. On Tuesday, Pentagon spokesman Capt Jeff Davis said activity had been spotted at the Syrian army's Shayrat airfield, from where the US says jets departed before the Khan Sheikhoun incident. "This involved specific aircraft in a specific hangar, both of which we know to be associated with chemical weapons use," Capt Davis said. In a statement on Monday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the US had "identified potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime that would likely result in the mass murder of civilians, including innocent children". He added that if "Mr Assad conducts another mass murder attack using chemical weapons, he and his military will pay a heavy price". The White House provided no supporting evidence or further explanation.

Headline: Air strike on IS prison in Mayadin 'kills dozens'

Almost 60 people have been killed in a suspected US-led coalition air strike on a prison run by so-called Islamic State in eastern Syria, activists say. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 42 prisoners and 15 militants died when the facility near Mayadin, in Deir al-Zour province, was hit on Monday. The Deirezzor24 news website said dozens of civilians and Syrian rebel fighters were detained there. A coalition spokesman said it was looking into the casualty reports. Mayadin, which lies in the Euphrates river valley about 45km (28 miles) south-east of the city of Deir al-Zour, has been targeted frequently by coalition aircraft. US intelligence officials believe IS moved most of its leaders to the town in recent months as Iraqi government forces advanced into the Iraqi city of Mosul and a US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters encircled the Syrian city of Raqqa.

Iraq

Headline: Iraqi military says it has retaken two Mosul neighborhoods from Daesh

Iraq’s military said on Wednesday it had retaken two more neighborhoods from Daesh in Mosul’s Old City, bringing it closer to total control of the city. The army’s 16th infantry division captured Hadarat Al-Saada and Al-Ahmadiyya, northwest of the historic Grand Al-Nuri Mosque which the militants destroyed last week. Daesh still controls the mosque’s grounds and about half of the last territory it runs in the Old City. Federal police and elite units of the Counter-Terrorism Service have also been fighting inside the district’s maze of narrow alleyways since the battle began 10 days ago.
The military estimates up to 350 militants are dug in among civilians in wrecked houses and crumbling infrastructure. They are trying to slow the advance of Iraqi forces by laying booby traps and using suicide bombers and snipers.

Turkey

Headline: Turkey returns fire on YPG in Syria, warplanes hit militants in Iraq

Turkish forces retaliated with an artillery barrage overnight and destroyed Kurdish YPG militia targets after the group's fighters opened fire on Turkey-backed forces in northern Syria, the military said on Wednesday. It said Turkish warplanes separately struck Kurdish militants in northern Iraq on Wednesday, killing seven fighters from the PKK group which Ankara says is closely linked to the YPG. The strikes came after Turkey's defense minister warned that Ankara would retaliate against any threatening moves by the YPG and after reports that Turkey was reinforcing its military presence in northern Syria. Turkey's army said YPG machine-gun fire on Tuesday evening targeted Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army elements in the Maranaz area south of the town of Azaz in northern Syria. "Fire support vehicles in the region were used to retaliate in kind against the harassing fire and the identified targets were destroyed/neutralised," the military statement said.

Iran

Headline: Iran warns against possible U.S. military attack on Syria

Iranian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday warned against any possible U.S. military attack on Syria. Any military action against Syria under the allegations of "potential" chemical weapon use by the Syrian government would only help the terrorists, the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi was quoted as saying. Qasemi dismissed as baseless Washington's recent claims that the Syrian government is preparing for a chemical weapon use in the country. He made the remarks in response to a recent White House statement that the United States has "identified potential preparations" by the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad for another chemical attack.

Headline: Nearly 80 police hurt in latest Morocco unrest: official

Nearly 80 police officers were injured in two days of clashes with protesters in Morocco's restive Rif region, an official said on Wednesday, although the number of demonstrators hurt was unknown. Around 50 members of the security forces were hurt on Monday in the northern city of Al-Hoceima, most of them struck by stones, a high-ranking interior ministry official told AFP. On Tuesday, 29 police officers were injured during new clashes in the neighbouring town of Imzouren, the same source said, adding that they were all later released from hospital. The Rif region has been rocked by unrest since a fishmonger was crushed to death in a rubbish truck in October as he tried to retrieve swordfish confiscated for being caught out of season. In the eight months since then, demands for justice and anger over the region's perceived marginalisation snowballed into a grassroots movement centred on Al-Hoceima. Clashes broke out in Al-Hoceima again on Monday, with activists saying police had blocked access to the city and violently dispersed any attempts to demonstrate.

Headline: Venezuela crisis: Helicopter launches attack on Supreme Court

A helicopter has attacked Venezuela's Supreme Court in what President Nicolás Maduro called a "terrorist" incident. Four grenades were dropped on the court and 15 shots fired at the interior ministry on Tuesday, officials said. Rogue policeman Oscar Pérez said he had piloted the stolen helicopter to attack what he called a "criminal government". His whereabouts are unknown. Venezuela is in the midst of a political and economic crisis that has sparked mass protests. The government said 15 shots were fired at a social event at the interior ministry. The helicopter then flew to the court and dropped four Israeli-made grenades of "Colombian origin". One failed to detonate. No-one was injured. President Maduro appeared on state television to denounce the attack. He said: "I have activated the entire armed forces to defend the peace. And you can be assured that sooner or later, we are going to capture that helicopter and those that carried out this terror attack against the institutions of the country."

Headline: More civilians found dead in Philippines as fighting drags on in Marawi

The mutilated bodies of more than a dozen civilians were found on a street in the Philippines on Wednesday, and military officials believe they were killed by the regional Maute terrorist group. Seventeen bodies were found on the street in Marawi on Wednesday morning. Five had been decapitated, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said.Philippine authorities say the regional Maute syndicate operates in line with the Islamic State terror group, although it is not formally affiliated with the radical Islamist organization. Government armed forces have been fighting Maute insurgents in Marawi for more than a month, and officials said nearly 300 Maute militants have been killed in that time. Military officials said more "atrocities" could happen to civilians as the fighting continues between militants and Philippine troops and the government tries to gain more ground. AFP Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said the civilian death toll from fighting has so far risen to 27 — not including the 17 bodies found Wednesday.

Headline: "Mind reading" technology can now decode complex thoughts

In the past, "mind reading" systems have been able to guess what single-digit number a person might be thinking of, but deeper thoughts have been beyond the technology's reach. Now, a team from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has developed a way to accurately read more complex concepts from a brain scan, and even piece together entire sentences. Even the most basic sentence is loaded with more information than you might realize: each word represents a new concept, and their placement and relationship to each other can drastically change the meaning of the whole. The CMU team found that the "building blocks" the mind uses to construct thoughts are made up of concepts, rather than being based on words themselves. That suggests the brain processes concepts in a universal way, regardless of a person's language and culture. The study tested how the brain codes complex thoughts, and how an fMRI scanner, with a little help from machine learning algorithms, can decode them. The researchers put together 240 "complex events," which are sentences like "The witness shouted during the trial." These events were made up of 42 different building blocks, or meaningful components like person, setting, size, social interaction and physical action.

Headline: 900+ earthquakes shake Yellowstone in 2 weeks

More than 120 people reported feeling a magnitude 4.4 quake on June 15, the largest in the swarm.  Average swarms consist of a few dozen earthquakes over a couple days, according to Jamie Farrell, U of U professor studying seismic activity in the country's first national park. "When it gets to these bigger ones, we pay attention to them just because we need to monitor these things just in case something changes," Farrell said. Farrell believes the activity is caused by stress building up under the crust of the massive volcano. He says there is no reason to panic along the Wasatch Front. "This is an active volcano. This is what happens. We get a lot of calls asking if they should cancel their trip to Yellowstone. Definitely no. I would say even the opposite of that. Go there and maybe you'll feel an earthquake. It would be kind of neat," said Farrell.
