Headline: PA leader calls on EU to recognize ‘Palestine’
Rami Hamdallah, the head of the Palestinian Authority (PA) government in Ramallah, on Monday urged all the European Union member states to recognize “Palestine”. Hamdallah made the comments during a meeting with a delegation representing the Palestine Committee in the European Parliament. “There is a greater need than in the past for all EU countries to recognize an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with its capital in East Jerusalem,” he said, adding such a move would be an “act of support for the efforts of the Palestinian leadership to end the occupation and to save the two-state solution.” During the meeting, reported the official PA news agency WAFA, Hamdallah presented to the delegation proof of alleged human rights violations committed by Israel against Palestinian Arabs, its “settlement expansion activities”, land confiscation and demolitions of homes and facilities, especially in Area C and in particular those financed by the European Union. Hamdallah called on the EU countries to pressure Israel to stop building new communities in Judea and Samaria, stop its alleged confiscation of land and violations of international law and humanitarian law. PA officials have repeatedly urged members of the EU to recognize “Palestine”. The last such call came earlier this month from chief PA negotiator Saeb Erekat.

Headline: ISIS releases ‘proof’ it fired rockets on Israel
The Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist organization on Tuesday evening claimed responsibility for firing two rockets on the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel on Monday. A statement quoted by the Amaq news agency, considered the mouthpiece of ISIS, said, “Islamic State fighters yesterday attacked the residents of the Israeli Eshkol region with two Katyusha-type rockets, south of Palestine.” The IDF said on Monday that the two rockets were fired into Israel from the Egyptian-controlled Sinai Peninsula. The rockets landed in open areas in the Eshkol region in the western Negev. No injuries or damage were reported. The rocket attack came a day after ISIS claimed that five members of its Sinai Peninsula branch were killed in an Israeli drone attack on Saturday night. The attack took place near the Sinai border with the Gaza Strip, outside of the city of Rafah. According to the Amaq news agency, the five terrorists killed in Saturday’s strike had been preparing to fire a rocket at Israel.

Headline: ISIS affiliates gaining ground in Golan offensive
ISIS-affiliated groups opened a major offensive in the tri-nation border of Israel, Syria and Jordan, attacking various rebel factions and have managed to take control of four villages—Adwan, Saham al-Jawlan, Jalin and Tasil—in addition to the strategic southwestern suburb of Daraa, which is the capital of Hauran. Areas change hands somewhat frequently, but a rapid victory on this scale has not been seen in some time. This could be one of the reasons why the Golan-area “Khaled ibn Al-Walid Army” has been getting a lot of screen time on ISIS media outlets. Ahrar al-Sham, one of the Salafist groups fighting the ISIS affiliates, admitted to losing fighters in the area of Hait, which appears to be the focal point of fighting between the two groups. On the third day of fighting, the Amaq News Agency reported that 104 rebel fighters had been killed and ISIS was maintaining control of the villages despite fighting raging in other areas. The leader of the Khaled ibn Al-Walid Army—an amalgam of the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade, the Islamic Muthanna Movement and the Army of Jihad—is Abu Mohammad al-Magdisi, a Palestinian by birth. Despite the focus of ISIS being on other rebel groups in the area, Israel and Jordan are both watching events in the area closely, with the prospect of ISIS gaining more control in the area worrying to both countries.

Headline: IDF jets allegedly attack Hezbollah targets in Syria overnight
Israeli jets allegedly struck targets near the Syrian capital overnight on Wednesday, reportedly a weapons shipment to the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, Lebanese media reported. Syrian media reported witnesses hearing “loud explosion sounds” in the early morning hours. According to Lebanese media, the targets that were hit around 3.00 a.m. were affiliated with the Assad regime and were the regime army’s 3rd Division in the al-Katif suburbs of the capital. The report also claimed that the IDF struck from within Lebanon, circling the Beqaa Valley and Baalbek, so as not to be blocked by the Russian defense systems operating in the area. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit declined to comment on the reports as the army does not respond to foreign reports. The alleged attack comes after a week during which Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah made several aggressive statements in an appearance on Iranian television as well as in interviews with the Lebanese media. The terror organization’s leader threatened to attack Israel in the near future, saying that “Hezbollah will have no red lines in the next war with Israel,” and also warned Israel from entering into a conflict with Hezbollah: “Israel should think a million times before it goes to war with Lebanon.” Last week Lebanese President Michel Aoun defended the weapons which Hezbollah has, saying the arms of the terror group are an essential part in defending Lebanon against Israel.

Headline: Arab-Kurdish fighters enter IS-held Deir al-Zour province
A US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab rebels has advanced into territory held by so-called Islamic State (IS) in Deir al-Zour province, eastern Syria. Kurdish military sources said the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had captured some 15 villages from IS. Unidentified air strikes killed 11 people in one IS-held village, though it was unclear if this was linked. The SDF hopes to cut IS’s supply lines from the oil-rich province to the group’s stronghold Raqqa, in the north. Syrian government forces in Deir al-Zour have also been battling to push out IS, which commands most of the province as well as its capital of the same name. The latest development comes just days before UN-sponsored talks between the Syrian government and opposition in Geneva, Switzerland – the first such meeting in nearly a year. A nationwide ceasefire – which excludes IS – took effect in December after peace talks in Kazakhstan. The deal was brokered by Russia and Iran, both allies of the Syrian government, as well as Turkey, which is supporting some of the rebels. Kurdish military sources said on Tuesday it was the first time the SDF alliance, which includes the Kurdish YPG militia and Arab fighting groups, had crossed into Deir al-Zour province. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described the operation as the SDF’s biggest incursion yet into Deir al-Zour province.

Headline: US troops have come ‘under fire’ in and around Mosul, official says
U.S. troops have come “under fire” and have “returned fire” in and around Mosul as allied forces try to retake the city from ISIS, a U.S. military spokesperson said on Wednesday. “When someone is shooting at you, that is combat,” said Col. John Dorrian, the Baghdad-based spokesman, to Pentagon reporters. While Dorrian said U.S. troops are operating “very close” to the front lines, he also added they do their best to avoid it, although circumstances can change where exactly the front lines are. The news comes days after the U.S. commander of American and allied forces in Iraq and Syria told Fox News’ Jennifer Griffin and other traveling press in Baghdad that U.S. troops were operating closer than ever to the front lines.

Headline: Ayatollah: We will liberate ‘Palestine’, remove cancer of Israel
Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called for the “complete Liberation of Palestine” on Tuesday, and slammed the Jewish state as a “cancerous tumor”. The comments were made at the Sixth International Conference in Support of the Palestinian Intifada, a government-sanctioned event held in Tehran. According to the Mehr news agency, representatives of 80 countries joined the event, which glorifies terrorism and acts of wanton violence against Jews and advocates in favor of the destruction of the Jewish state. During his address, which was broadcast live on Iranian state television, Khamenei said efforts to destroy Israel must be “incremental”. “This cancerous tumor, since its start, has grown incrementally and its treatment must be incremental too.” The Ayatollah also praised violent attacks against Israelis, arguing that they have brought Israel’s enemies closer to their goal of destroying the Jewish state. “Multiple intifadas and continuous resistance have succeeded in achieving very important incremental goals,” said Khamenei.

Headline: SWEDEN RIOT: Police forced to shoot at protesters as violence erupts
The scenes took place just hours after the country’s Prime Minister, Stefan Löfven, slammed Donald Trump for claiming Sweden was in crisis as a result of its liberal refugee policy. Stockholm police were forced to fire a shot into the crowd in the hard-hit suburb of Rinkeby, after a mob of around 30 began attacking officers with rocks. Violence erupted after the police had tried to arrest a wanted person on the subway. Sylvia Odin, of the Stockholm police, said: “There was stone throwing and they were placed in a situation where a number of people jointly attacked and threw stones. They felt vulnerable and threatened. No suspects have been arrested after the clashes, however officers are treating the incident as a riot and assault on police.

Headline: Brazil’s poorest region suffers worst drought in a century
The semiarid northeast of Brazil, known as the Sertao, is used to rain shortages but no one can remember a drought like this. There has been almost no rain since 2012 and the leafless, desiccated landscape has the appearance of having been in a vast fire. Rivers and reservoirs that used to serve rural populations are not coping. The authorities estimate that reserves are at six percent capacity, with some completely emptied. Experts say that a cocktail of factors has produced the disaster: a strong El Nino in the Pacific, heating of the north Atlantic and climate change that has seen temperatures in Ceara rise by 1.3 degrees Celsius (2.4 degrees Fahrenheit) in 50 years. Everyday activities, even washing clothes or drinking, have become a luxury in the Sertao, which extends across eight states. The region has 25 million inhabitants and of them three million have insufficient water, according to state government figures — a ratio that shoots up for those living in the countryside. Rural communities depend on government water trucks, which fill cisterns. Even so there is only enough for about 20 liters (5.3 gallons) a day per person, far off the World Health Organization’s recommended 50 to 100 liters a day, for drinking, cooking and sanitation.

Headline: Atheist forces school to drop Ten Commandments
A Pennsylvania school district capitulated to the demands of a militant atheist who filed a federal lawsuit demanding the district remove a Ten Commandments monument erected on a public high school campus. New Kensington-Arnold School District agreed to remove the massive monument within 30 days – ending a lawsuit filed in 2012 by self-avowed atheist Marie Schaub. Schaub claimed the 6-foot stone monument erected outside Valley High School was a religious symbol and therefore was a violating of the U.S. Constitution. “It’s unfortunate that many people in my community don’t understand or appreciate the separation of church and state, but I hope this settlement serves as an important lesson,” she told the Valley News Dispatch. Schaub also claimed the monument was offensive to her and her daughter. I can only imagine which commandment she found to be most offensive. Maybe it was the one about graven images.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Sunday morning that he met secretly a year ago with the leaders of Egypt and Jordan in a failed bid by the Obama administration to convene a wider regional summit on Israeli-Palestinian peace. Speaking to ministers from his Likud party, Netanyahu said that he had participated in a clandestine meeting on February 21, 2016 in the Jordanian Sea resort of Aqaba with the then US secretary of state John Kerry, Jordan’s King Abdullah and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi. During the summit, according to a report in Haaretz, Kerry presented a regional peace initiative which allegedly included recognition of Israel as a Jewish state and that would renew negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. However, the initiative to involve other Arab states in the pursuit of peace with the Palestinians ultimately fizzled out, the newspaper said, after Netanyahu withdrew his initial support, pointing to opposition within his right-wing government. A spokesman for Netanyahu declined to comment on the report. Al-Sisi’s office issued a statement referring to the news report, without mentioning a specific newspaper, as having “incorrect information” but did not deny that a meeting took place. No immediate comment was available from Jordan. The Egyptian president also emphasized during a meeting with a delegation of leaders from Jewish leaders in the US that a two-state solution was just, and was a top priority. “The establishment of peace will bring about a new reality that will enable regional countries to make social and economic developments that the peoples of the states except,” al-Sisi said. He also added that peace would end one of the most important excuses used by terror organizations to justify their acts. In addition, efforts are continuing among Arab states to renew contact between Israel and the Palestinians. Indeed, Jordan’s king met Sunday with members of the US Congress in Amman.

Headline: Two rockets from Sinai explode in southern Israel; none hurt
Two rockets launched from the Sinai Peninsula exploded in southern Israel’s Eshkol Regional Council on Monday morning, the IDF reported. No air raid sirens were activated in the area as the projectiles were headed toward open territory, a military source added. There were no reports of injury or damage in the incident. Monday’s rocket attack came the day after Islamic State-linked media claimed that an unmanned Israeli drone had bombed and killed four members of ISIS in Egypt in the northern Sinai region. According to the Islamic State linked Amaq agency, the four “fell as martyrs to the Jewish enemy” in a strike which targeted a car carrying the militants in the village of Shibana located south of the town Rafah. Earlier this month the group claimed responsibility for a rocket barrage fired from the Sinai towards Israel’s Red Sea resort of city of Eilat. The Iron Dome missile system intercepted three projectiles while a fourth landed in open territory.

Headline: ‘Hezbollah might have game-changing naval missiles’
Western intelligence agencies have expressed “grave concerns” that Hezbollah has been able to obtain strategic naval weapons that could change the balance of power in the Middle East. Despite great efforts attributed to Israel over the past five years to prevent Hezbollah from getting its hands on such weapons, the Lebanese terror organization is believed to have been able to smuggle into Lebanon a certain amount—likely no more than eight—of P-800 Onyx missiles, also known in export markets as Yakhont. The information, which was passed among several intelligence agencies, is based on what was defined as “highly reliable sources.” The Russian supersonic anti-ship cruise missile is regarded as the naval equivalent of the antiaircraft S-300 and is considered the best of its kind in the world. It can be fired from the shore and has a range of up to 300 kilometers. There is no known electronic defense system that could deal with it or intercept it. According to Israeli intelligence officials, Hezbollah could use the Onyx missiles to significantly threaten the Israeli Navy, the US Sixth Fleet and civilian vessels in the Mediterranean, as well as Israel’s newly built oil and gas rigs. Headline: Saudi Arabia praises Trump, warms up towards Israel
Iran is the biggest threat to the Middle East, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said, adding that he looks forward to working with the Trump administration to overcome challenges in the region, including the Arab-Israeli conflict. In apparent agreement with the Israelis, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister accused Iran of being the primary supporter of global terrorism. “Iran remains the single main sponsor of terrorism in the world,” Adel al-Jubeir declared in an address to the Munich Security Conference on Sunday. “It’s determined to upend the order in Middle East, and until and unless Iran changes its behavior it would be very difficult to deal with a country like this.” “I believe that the world has to make it clear to the Iranians that there is certain behavior that will not be tolerated, and that there will be consequences, and those consequences have to be in tune with the financial side,” he affirmed. Al-Jubeir added that he was “very optimistic about the Trump administration,” which had recently put “Iran on notice.” “We look forward to working with the Trump administration on all issues,” al-Jubeir said. “I believe progress can be made in the Arab Israel conflict, if there is a will to do so,. We know what the settlement looks like, if there is just the political will to do so. And my country stands ready with other Arab countries to work to see how we can promote that.”

Headline: Houthi forces wreak havoc on military sites in southern Saudi Arabia
The Houthi forces carried out several powerful attacks in the Jizan and Asir regions of Saudi Arabia on Saturday, targeting military sites and vehicles in the southern part of this Gulf kingdom. According to local activists in northern Yemen, the Houthi forces raided several Saudi military posts near the border, destroying many armored vehicles and killing scores of soldiers. Hezbollah’s media relations captured footage of the Houthi assault on Saudi installations, Saturday, showing the destruction of the military sites. DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the southern Syrian town of Daraa is suffering the heaviest Russian air strikes hitherto in that country. They are aimed at driving a pro-Jordanian Syrian rebel forces out of the Manshiya district, which dominates the town and commands the Syrian-Jordanian border passes. Turkey is no longer considering a military operation to capture the city of Raqqa from the Islamic State, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told journalists in Munich on Sunday. “The United States, Turkey along with local forces, civilian forces, the FSA [Free Syrian Army] and other militias… they are at the forefront while we are at the back,” Yıldırım told reporters at the conference he is attending in Germany. Yildirim’s statement to journalists comes just one week after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed his armed forces would go to Al-Raqqa after their Al-Bab operations. While the Turkish Army will not go to Al-Raqqa, they will continue to provide assistance to the rebel forces participating in the upcoming offensive, Yildirim added.

Headline: Mosul battle heats up as Iraqi forces fight ISIS near airport
Iraqi government forces have seized several villages as they move towards an assault on the last area held by the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Mosul. Hundreds of military vehicles, backed by air power, rolled across the desert towards IS positions early on Sunday. The progress on Sunday in the south of the city, the second biggest in Iraq, takes them within striking distance of Mosul airport. Fears have been voiced about the safety of many thousands of trapped civilians. The offensive was formally announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi early on Sunday. Army Staff Lieutenant General Abdulamir Yarallah said in a statement that elite Rapid Response units captured the villages of Athbah and Al-Lazzagah – two villages south of Mosul airport. Government forces retook the eastern side of the city, the last major IS stronghold in Iraq, last month. But military officials say the western side, with its narrow, winding streets, may prove a bigger challenge. For now, there is no advance from eastern Mosul as all bridges from there to the west of the city, across the Tigris river, have been destroyed.

Turkish war planes illegally operating in Iraq have targeted Kurdistan Worker Party (PKK) positions. At least 34 fighters of the PKK, in which Ankara recognizes as a terrorist group, were killed in two separate strikes on Monday. The first strike took place shortly after midnight, with the second shortly after noon. They both targeted the Zap region of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region.

Turkey dismissed 227 more judges and prosecutors on Monday as part of investigations into last July’s failed coup, the state-run Anadolu agency said, meaning close to 4,000 members of the judiciary have now been purged. Turkish authorities have detained, sacked or dismissed more than 100,000 people from the police, military, public service, judiciary, and elsewhere since the abortive coup over suspected ties to U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of orchestrating the putsch. Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999, has denied the charge and condemned the coup. With the latest dismissals, the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) has now dismissed more than 3,886 members of the judiciary since the July 15 putsch, Anadolu said. Rights groups and some Western allies fear President Tayyip Erdogan is using the coup as a pretext to stifle dissent. The government argues the purges are justified by the extent of the threat to the state on July 15, when rogue soldiers commandeered tanks and fighter jets, killing at least 240 people.

He said rockets would be used without specifying which kind. In early February, Iran conducted drills involving short-range missiles at a time of heightened tensions with the United States. The Islamic republic said the exercises were aimed at demonstrating Iran’s “complete preparedness to deal with the threats” and “humiliating sanctions” from Washington. US President Donald Trump slapped fresh sanctions against Tehran’s weapons procurement network following a ballistic missile test on January 29. “Iran would do well to look at the calendar and realize there’s a new president in the Oval Office. And Iran would do well not to test the resolve of this new president,” Vice President Mike Pence said earlier this month. New Pentagon chief James Mattis, for his part, has branded Iran “the single biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world”. DEBKAfile’s military sources report that in the last two days, Tehran has dispatched large-scale Revolutionary Guards forces from central Iran to Falahiyeh, a town in the southern Ahwaz oil region which is dominated by a restive population of Arab descent.. Violent riots erupted there after security forces killed a young man with shots to the head and opened fire on two motorcyclists, who apparently tried to ram a Guards checkpoint. The rioters set fire to police stations and the vehicles of local officials.

Headline: Pakistan, Afghanistan Move to Defuse Border Tensions
Pakistan and Afghanistan have issued conciliatory statements in an apparent attempt to defuse days of border tensions stemming from charges Afghan soil was used for masterminding last week’s terrorist attacks in Pakistani cities. Pakistani troops have been staging cross-border shelling to target what authorities claimed were camps of Jammat-ul Ahrar, or JuA, a splinter faction of the anti-state Pakistani Taliban for being behind most of the deadly violence. Islamabad maintains that JuA leaders are sheltering in Afghan border areas from where they plot and direct violence against Pakistan. Security officials also confirmed Monday, the military deployed additional heavy artillery at main border crossings to deter illegal movements. However, Pakistani military chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Monday explained his troop build up along the Afghan border and enhanced security arrangements are aimed at fighting “common enemy” of terrorism. “Pakistan and Afghanistan have fought against terrorism and shall continue this effort together,” the general told a security meeting of his top commanders in Rawalpindi, where the military is headquartered. Bajwa also called “for more effective border coordination and cooperation” with Afghan security forces to prevent cross-border movement of terrorists and other illegal activities, according to a statement released by the military’s media wing after the meeting.

Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj of the UN-backed government in Tripoli said on Sunday he would like Russia to help overcome deadlock in the country, which is struggling with divisions among militias and an extremist militant threat. In an interview with Reuters, Sarraj expressed hope that Moscow might act as an intermediary between him and Khalifa Haftar, a military commander who is supported by factions based in the east of Libya. Sarraj’s Government of National Accord has been trying to formulate plans for unified Libyan security forces since arriving in Tripoli in March, but has made little progress. Asked whether Moscow could become a useful intermediary to pass on political messages or pressure to Haftar, Sarraj said “Yes”. “We hope that Russia will play a positive role in resolving the Libyan crisis,” he said on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. “We hope that anyone getting involved in Libya will have a positive effect in the sense that the message that I want to sit down with the other Libyan parties reaches them.” Sarraj has already held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Moscow’s ambassador in Libya. The first two months of 2017 have been jammed with one protest march after another, and for many newly-christened activists, the hours in between are spent calling elected officials and obsessively reading news updates. This week is no different. Thursday’s “Day Without An Immigrant” saw rallies and marches nationwide, followed by Friday’s “General Strike” in over 100 cities. On Saturday, President Trump’s Florida campaign rally was met with protests, and thousands attended a Muslim solidarity rally on Sunday in New York. Monday may be a federal holiday, but activists aren’t taking a break: streets will be filled with “Not My President’s Day” protesters around the country. “Not My President’s Day” rallies are taking place in at least 25 cities. Over 20,000 people responded to the Los Angeles protest’s Facebook event, and a statement on the page explains opposition to the Trump administration. Meanwhile, MPs have accused US President Donald Trump of acting “like a petulant child” and having a “protozoan” intellectual capacity in a debate on the state visit offered to him by Theresa May. In a packed Westminster Hall, MPs have gathered to debating a petition signed by more than 1.85 million people calling for the visit to be stripped of the trappings of a state occasion in order to avoid causing “embarrassment” to the Queen.

Headline: Somalia Mogadishu car bomb: At least 34 people killed
At least 34 people have been killed and about 50 injured in a car bomb blast in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The car blew up in the city’s southern Madina district, officials say. The blast – which ripped through shops and food stalls – is the first major attack in the capital since the election of President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed earlier this month. No group has claimed responsibility, although al-Shabab militants are likely to be the prime suspects. On Saturday a senior al-Shabab commander vowed to target the president’s supporters. President Mohamed has condemned the bombing, accusing al-Shabab of being behind the attack. He urged Somalis to unite against the group’s brutality. The new president visited some of the wounded, as well as the site of the blast on Sunday. He has offered a $100,000 reward to anybody who supplies information leading to the capture of those responsible. “It was a horrific and barbaric attack only aimed at killings civilians,” he said.

Headline: At least five killed in protests over Guinea teachers’ strike
At least five people were killed in Guinea’s capital of Conakry on Monday in protests sparked by a teacher’s strike, the government said, reviving labor tensions in a country where previous strikes have led to dozens of deaths. Government spokesman Damantang Albert Camara later told Reuters that a deal to end the strike was signed with Guinea’s main teachers’ unions on Monday evening. The unions had launched the strike on Feb. 1 to protest the government’s decision to dismiss or cut the salaries of many junior teachers after the latest civil service exams, and many of their students had taken to the streets in recent days to support them. Unidentified assailants on Monday morning attacked a police station and demonstrators clashed with gendarmes in several districts of Conakry, witnesses said. “By midday, these demonstrations had unfortunately caused the deaths of at least five people,” the government said in a statement, calling the protest “illegal and forbidden”. It added that 30 people had been injured, including members of the security forces, and 12 arrested. Witnesses told Reuters that three of the dead had been shot but it was not possible to verify that information.

Anti-racism groups and other protesters rallied in Paris on Saturday to support victims of police violence after a young black man was allegedly raped with a police baton earlier this month. Paris police installed a security perimeter around Saturday’s rally on the Place de la République in eastern Paris. Far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, meanwhile, urged the government to ban the protest out of respect for police who are ensuring public safety in France during the country’s ongoing state of emergency. Demonstrators carried banners reading “Justice for Théo,” the name of the 22-year-old alleged rape victim, and called for justice in the investigation. The protesters argue that Théo is just one example of many young men unfairly targeted by police in ID checks and sometimes abused. “There’s a lot of support for Théo,” FRANCE 24’s Julia Kim said on Saturday. “We’re seeing 1,000, possibly 2,000 people. “Police have closed all access into the Place de la République … but all-in-all it seems rather calm.” Théo, whose last name has not been released, was hospitalised for two weeks after the reported attack in his hometown of Aulnay-sous-Bois northeast of Paris. A local youth worker, Theo has become a symbol for minorities who stand up to police violence. One officer has been charged with rape in the case, and three others with aggravated assault. All deny intentional wrongdoing.

Headline: Thousands Of Romanians In 20th Day Of Anti-Government Protests
Thousands of Romanians turned out for the 20th day in a row on Sunday to protest against the government, which demonstrators accuse of trying to protect corrupt politicians. Despite heavy rain, 3,000 people protested in front of parliament in Bucharest while another 3,000 demonstrated in the country’s second biggest city, Cluj. The protests, which at their peak were the biggest since the fall of Communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989, began when the new government passed a decree in late January decriminalizing some corruption offences. It eventually rescinded the decree, which had drawn sharp criticism from President Klaus Iohannis as well as from abroad, as the mass protests continued across the country, but the Social Democratic government has refused to resign. Romania’s upper house of parliament, the Senate, voted unanimously to endorse the decision to scrap the decree on Tuesday, though the lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, has not yet approved it, making demonstrators concerned it could still come into effect.

Donald Trump marked his first month as US President with two major military gambits in the Middle East, Asia and the South China Sea. Early Sunday, Feb. 19, the US Navy said that the Nimitz-class USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier and strike group had begun patrols in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. With them are three air squadrons coming from their Naval Air Station Lemoore: the USS Lake Champlain guided missile cruiser and two guided missile destroyers, the USS Michael Murphy and the USS Wayne E. Meyer. The deployment comes after Beijing’s warning that a US naval unit sailing near the disputed Spralys, where China has built islands and a military presence, would be seen as a violation of sovereignty, which the US and Japan refuse to recognize. The Trump administration’s move therefore opens up a potential arena of confrontation between the US and China. It also caries a message for North Korea, which Trump has called “a big, big problem and we will deal with that very strongly.” A week ago, on Feb. 12, North Korea launched a missile, using new “cold eject” technology which makes it possible to fire a missile from a submarine. Military experts in Washington and Jerusalem estimate that once Pyongyang has perfected the system, it will be passed to Tehran, an eventuality covered in Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s White House talks with President Trump last week, our sources reveal. Our military sources add that while Washington has publicly announced the transfer of a naval-air force to the South China Sea, the deployment of the large 11th Marine Expeditionary Combat Unit to the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea is being kept low key. The conventional thinking until now was that, in the event of an Iranian clash with the US or Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, Tehran would push back by blocking the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Today, American forces have been placed in position to prevent Iran from blocking the Strait of Mandeb, and so choking the main sea route used by oil and merchant shipping sailing to and from the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, by posting missile bases on Yemen’s western Red Sea coast. The 4,500-strong contingent of MEC marines and sailors is supported by the fighters and attack helicopters on board the USS Makin Island amphibious assault ship, the USS Somerset amphibious transport and the USS Comstock dock landing ship. Their task is to keep the strategic waterway open and safe.

A famine has been declared in parts of South Sudan, the first to be announced in any part of the world in six years. The government and the United Nations report that some 100,000 people are facing starvation, with a million more on the brink of famine. A combination of civil war and an economic collapse have been blamed. There have been warnings of famine in Yemen, Somalia and north-eastern Nigeria, but South Sudan is the first to declare one. The famine is currently affecting parts of the Unity state in South Sudan, but humanitarian groups have warned that the crisis could spread if urgent help is not received. Aid agencies, including the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the children’s fund Unicef, said that 4.9 million people – more than 40% of South Sudan’s population – are in urgent need of food.

An Islamic State affiliate released a video Monday vowing that Egyptian Christians are their “favorite prey,” showing images of a suicide bomber who killed nearly 30 people inside a packed Cairo church in December. “God gave orders to kill every infidel,” one of the militants carrying an AK-47 assault rifle says in the 20-minute video. The video shows footage of Egypt’s Coptic Christian Pope, Christian businessmen, judges and priests who either speak of the need to protect the minority or use derogatory terms to refer to Egypt’s Muslim majority. The narrator says Christians were no longer “dhimmis,” a reference to non-Muslims in Islam who enjoy a degree of state protection. Instead, the group describes the Christians as “infidels” who are empowering the West against Muslim nations. The video shows footage of Abu Abdullah al-Masri, a masked militant who blew himself up at the central Cairo church in December, killing 28 people, most of which were women and children. The attack, says a narrator, was “only the beginning. The video carries the logo “Egypt” instead of the normal “Wilayat Sinai” or the state of Sinai. It suggests the terrorists are trying to expand their operations to the rest of the country, Reuters reported. The message comes at a time when attacks on Coptic Christians have escalated in Sinai. In the past month, at least three Christians were gunned down in separate drive-by shooting attacks in the city of el-Arish.

Residents in parts of California have been told to prepare for an imminent evacuation as a powerful storm threatens to cause flooding across many parts of the State. As the first outer rain bands from a Pacific storm touched Northern California on Sunday, residents in the Central Valley were told to be prepared to leave their homes amid fears that severe flooding could hit the State on Monday and Tuesday as the severity of the storm is expected to worsen. On Sunday, the weather service issued a flood warning in urban areas and along small streams through Thursday for the counties that make up the Sacramento and northern San Joaquin valleys, as well as for most of the counties that sit along the Valley’s rim. “We may see flooding in locations which haven’t been impacted in many years,” the alert reads. In other words, those living anywhere near a river, a slough, a levee, a creek or a canal need to be ready to flee floodwaters at a moment’s notice.

Headline: Harsh weather in Afghanistan kills dozens in blizzard, rainstorms
As many as 50 people have died in storms over the past three days in Afghanistan, including 25 shepherds lost in a blizzard, a government disaster management official said on Monday. Also among the dead were 11 people killed in separate incidents in roof collapses in heavy rain in Kabul province, said Omar Mohammadi, a spokesman for the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Agency. Another 44 people were hurt in weather-related accidents. “At least 239 people have been killed and 214 wounded during the past two months of heavy snow and rain in 22 provinces of Afghanistan,” Mohammadi said. More than 520 houses were destroyed and about 420 damaged over the same period, he added.

Headline: Arab League, UN reiterate call for two-state solution
The secretary-generals of both the Arab League and the United Nations reiterated their calls on Thursday for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA). “It requires a comprehensive and just settlement based on a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with its capital in Jerusalem,” said Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, according to the Egyptian news outlet MENA (Middle East News Agency). Gheit was essentially calling for Israel to relinquish all territory won by Israel during the Six-Day War of 1967, in accordance with the guidelines of the Saudi Peace Initiative presented in 2002. Gheit’s remarks followed a joint press conference on Wednesday between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump in which both leaders noticeably avoided making any explicit commitment to a two-state solution.

Israel asked the United States to recognize its sovereignty over the Golan Heights during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s three-day visit to Washington, in which the Trump administration affirmed the unbreakable bond between the two countries. The prime minister brought up the issue of the Golan both at his meeting with Trump at the White House on Wednesday as well as with Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday. After the meetings, Netanyahu told reporters that the US leaders’ response was “not Earth shattering.” According to an Israeli official, Netanyahu also spoke with Pence about ways to advance the issue with regard to the mountainous area that Israel captured from Syria in the Six Day War and then annexed in 1981. The United States and the international community have never recognized Israeli sovereignty in the Golan Heights. Israel has long argued that it must maintain that territory for security reasons and hopes that the Trump administration might take a different stance on the matter.

Headline: Terrorism makes January Israel’s bloodiest month since June
Five Israelis were killed in January by Palestinian terrorists, making the month the deadliest since June 2016, according to Israel’s security service. The Shin Bet recorded a total of 100 attacks in January, which left 16 wounded, according to its monthly report published earlier this week. Four of the victims were killed in Jerusalem on Jan. 8 when the assailant drove his truck into a crowd of soldiers. One man was killed the previous week in Haifa. Of the attacks documented last month, 81 involved the hurling of firebombs. December 2016 had seen 98 attacks. Separately, on Thursday, Palestinians accused a driver they claim is an Israeli settler of deliberately hitting a Palestinian man with his car at the entrance to the West Bank town of Beit Ummar, near Hebron. Rafat Muhammad Shihdeh Abu Arrar Masalmeh, 36, was struck while approaching the parked car of his brother on the shoulder of the road, according to a report by the Palestinian Ma’an news agency. The report did not specify his condition or name the driver. The report quoted a man described as a “local activist” of saying the settler hit Masalmeh deliberately and then fled the scene.

Headline: Nasrallah warns: Hezbollah’s missiles can hit Israel’s nuclear reactor
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah called on Israel to dismantle its nuclear reactor in Dimona on Thursday, warning that it poses a threat to Israel’s existence should it be hit by one of Hezbollah’s missiles. Nasrallah made a similar threat against Haifa’s ammonia tank last year, saying that a missile hitting the facility could have the affect of a nuclear bomb. Last week, a Haifa court ordered the tank closed, citing the security threat. Speaking in a televised speech commemorating Hezbollah’s slain leaders, Nasrallah said that Hezbollah sees Israel’s emptying of the ammonia tank as a sign that it fears the Lebanese Sh’ite group. “I call on Israel not only to empty the ammonia tank in Haifa, but also to dismantle the nuclear reactor in Dimona. Our military capabilities will strike Israel and its settlements,” he warned. Nasrallah also suggested that Israel has been emboldened by the election of Donald Trump as US president. “Trump’s election does not scare us, even if claims that he will give [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu the green light to wage a war on Lebanon turn out to be true,” Lebanese news website Naharnet quoted Nasrallah as saying.

Military analysts at IHS Jane’s have revealed that Saudi Arabia and several other Western-backed Arab countries in the Middle East are purchasing weapons suited for a more offensive military program in distant locations. A large number of foreign soldiers taking part in the Saudi Coalition’s offensive in west Yemen were killed on Friday after a Houthi missile struck their positions near the Mocha Port. According to Houthi media, their forces fired several Katyusha rockets at the Saudi Coalition’s defenses, causing a significant number of casualties in the Al-Jadid area south of Mocha. Since losing the Mocha Port, the Houthi forces have carried out several hit-and-run attacks to harass the Saudi Coalition forces and their allies.

Three army soldiers were killed and four others injured in an explosion in the El-Halal mountain area in central Sinai, the Egyptian army said on Friday. The explosion occurred during a raid on “terrorist hideouts” by the third field army and police forces in the area. The raid also resulted in the death of three militants and the arrest of three others, an army spokesman said on his official Facebook page. Egypt’s army and police forces have been waging a war over the past three years against an Islamist militant insurgency in North Sinai. Hundreds have been killed in the violence.

Overlaying US President Donald Trump’s extraordinary, hour-long skirmish with reporters Thursday, Feb. 16, was bitter frustration over the domestic obstacles locking him out from his top security and foreign policy goals. Even before his inauguration four weeks ago, he had arranged to reach those goals by means of an understanding with President Vladimir Putin for military and intelligence cooperation in Syria, both for the war on the Islamic State and for the removal of Iran and its Lebanese surrogate Hizballah from that country. But his antagonists, including elements of the US intelligence community, were turning his strategy into a blunderbuss for hitting him on the head, with the help of hostile media. Thursday, in a highly unconventional meeting with the world media, he tried to hit back, and possibly save his strategy. That won’t be easy. The exit of National Security Adviser Mike Flynn, the prime mover in the US-Russian détente, sent the Kremlin a negative signal. The Russians began unsheathing their claws when they began to suspect that the US president was being forced back from their understanding. The SSV 175 Viktor Leonov spy ship was ordered to move into position opposite Delaware on the East Coast of America; Su-24 warplanes buzzed the USS Porter destroyer in the Black Sea. Before these events, Washington and Moscow wre moving briskly towards an understanding. debkafile’s intelligence sources disclose that the Kremlin had sent positive messages to the White House on their joint strategy in Syria, clarifying that Moscow was not locked in on Bashar Assad staying on as president. At all events, his administration seems to be at a crossroads between whether to try and salvage the partnership with Russia for Syria, or treat it as a write-off. debkafile’s sources report that the relations will quickly roll downhill without a strong hand to haul them back. The Islamic State (ISIS) forces struck back against the Turkish Army and their rebel allies on Friday, seizing several points from the latter inside Al-Bab City. According to the Islamic State’s official media wing, their forces recaptured the Shehabi Farms at the northern gates of Al-Bab after a battle with the Turkish Army and their rebel allies on Friday afternoon. With Shehabi Farms under their control, the Islamic State will now attempt to retake Aqil Hill from the Turkish Armed Forces in the Al-Bab countryside. If ISIS is successful in their quest to recapture the Aqil Hill, then they will have reversed most of the gains made by the Turkish Armed Forces in Al-Bab.

At least 48 people have been killed in Baghdad in the third blast in the Iraqi capital in three days, security and medical sources say. A car packed with explosives blew up near car dealerships in the Shia area of Bayaa in the south of the city. More than 50 people were injured. The Islamic State (IS) group claimed the attack, saying it targeted “a gathering of Shias”. At least 24 people were killed in other attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday. Baghdad saw a wave of deadly suicide attacks by IS in the first few days of 2017, but the number had dropped until recently. An AFP reporter at the scene of Thursday’s bomb reported seeing numerous burnt-out vehicles, and blood on the ground.

ISIS attacked a battalion of state-sponsored militia southeast of Tikrit on Friday, killing at least eight militia members, an intelligence official said. Headline: Islamic State readies for close combat in alleyways of west Mosul
Islamic State militants are developing a network of passageways and tunnels in the narrow alleys of west Mosul that will enable them to hide and fight among the civilian population when Iraqi forces launch an attack that is expected any day now. Residents said the fighters have been opening passages in the walls between houses to allow them to move from block to block undetected, disappear after hit-and-run operations and track government troop movements. They have also opened sniper holes in buildings overlooking the Tigris river bisecting the city into east and west, they said. “They opened these holes and threatened us not to close them,” one resident told Reuters by telephone, asking not to be identified by name or location because Islamic State executes anyone caught communicating with the outside world. The militants are essentially under siege in western Mosul, along with an estimated 650,000 civilians, after US-backed forces surrounding the city dislodged them from the east in the first phase of an offensive that concluded four weeks ago.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has condemned Turkey’s “repeated crimes and attacks” on the Syrian people as well as violations of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity, in two letters to the UN, Syria’s SANA news agency reports. The ministry expressed its discontent with Turkey’s actions in letters sent to the UN secretary general and the current president of the UN Security Council. In the letters, the Syrian authorities ask the UNSC to exert influence on Ankara and force it to put an end to “repeated crimes and attacks against the Syrian people and violations of the sanctity and unity of Syria’s territory,” SANA writes. Damascus says that Turkey’s “aggression against Syria” has continued for five years and involves “providing various forms of military, material and logistic support to the terrorist organizations and facilitating the entry of foreign militants into Syria.” The Syrian Foreign Ministry again demanded that the UNSC fulfill its responsibilities to preserve international peace and security. The statement comes a day after SANA reported that 24 people, including 11 children aged under six and eight women, were killed in Turkish airstrikes and shelling of the northern Syrian town of Al Bab.

He also said that the agreement with Iran to limit its nuclear program — brokered in 2015 by the US, Iran and five other world powers — will stay in place, despite noises to the contrary from members of US President Donald Trump’s administration. Speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Zarif said there was an international consensus not to let the agreement — which took two years to negotiate — unravel. “I believe everybody, including experts in the United States, know this was the best deal possible for all concerned, not just Iran but the US too,” he said. “It was a triumph of diplomacy over coercion, because coercion doesn’t work any more.” Regarding Syria, where Iran is in alliance with Russia in supporting the government of President Bashar al-Assad, the 57-year-old Iranian diplomat said it was the US “occupation” of Iraq that had created ISIS. Zarif claimed that a nationwide ceasefire in Syria — brokered by Russia and Turkey in December — was largely working, and said that sending US soldiers to fight ISIS would add fuel to the fire.

On this day six years ago, a popular uprising erupted in Libya against the 42-year-old regime of Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi. Nato famously stepped in, ostensibly to protect civilians, with the backing of France and the US. Eight months later, Gaddafi was dead and the Libyan regime was history. So too, it appears, was the entire country. Libya has descended into uncontrollable chaos. Power cuts are routine, topped with water shortages, hyperinflation, a liquidity crisis, and rule by militia. The capital itself is very unsafe, especially at night, manned by men with guns who are far more influential than the UN-backed National Accord Government that is struggling to assert full control of the country since assuming power last March. Meanwhile, The special envoy to Libya appointed by the Arab League Salah Al-Din Al-Jamali told Al-Ahram on Wednesday that he will visit the war-torn country soon for talks with the Libya’s various political rivals. “I will visit several cities including Tripoli, Benghazi and Tobruk to support the Arab effort to reach a political solution in Libya,” Al-Jamali told Al-Ahram, adding that coordination between Libya’s neighbours and other Arab countries should contribute to achieving peace in the country. The Tunisian ambassador Al-Jamali was appointed by the Arab League as its special envoy to Libya in November. Al-Jamali welcomed and praised Egyptian efforts to bridge the gap between the different positions of Libyan factions during meetings held earlier this week in Cairo.

Hundreds of those Tunisian fighters are now returning home and the police forces of the Tunisian and European governments are scrambling to determine whether some of the most violent Tunisian jihadis will continue their battles on Tunisian and European soil. Tunisia, the only democracy to emerge from the Arab Spring that blew through North Africa and the Middle East between late 2010 and 2012, has now become, by a wide margin, the top source of foreign fighters in Syria. The two deadliest terrorist attacks in Europe in the past year were the work of two Tunisian-born assailants, though neither had fought in the Middle East. The first, on July 14, in Nice, France, saw Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel use a truck to mow down and kill 86 people, injuring more than 400 others. On Dec. 19, a young drifter and failed asylum seeker named Anis Amri, who had been in prison in Sicily, used the same method – a truck – to slaughter 12 people and injure 56 at a Berlin Christmas market. Less widely reported in the Western media is the virtually endless stream of terrorist attacks on Tunisian soil – dozens since 2011 – leaving hundreds of civilians and terrorists dead. Some of those terrorists had been foreign fighters.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. Fazal Palejo, a senior health official in Sindh province, confirmed the toll. The Islamic State group claimed the attack in a statement circulated by its Aamaq news agency, saying it had targeted a “Shiite gathering.” The Sunni extremist group views Shiites as apostates and has targeted Pakistan’s Shiite minority in the past. It views Sufi shrines like the one targeted Thursday as a form of idolatry. A 50-year-old Christian convert in India died last month after he and his wife were forced to endure the torture of standing neck deep in a freezing pond for more than half a day after they refused to renounce their faith in Jesus Christ. Global Christian News reports that tribal residents of Kubuaa village in the Jharkhand state were upset that Christian convert Bartu Urawn and his family had left the indigenous tribal religion, Sarna Dharam, and embraced Christianity over 10 years ago. In retaliation for the family’s unwillingness to leave Christianity, the villagers immersed Urawn and his wife in a frigid pond for over 17 hours one winter day last year. Urawn’s son, Beneswar, told the news outlet that the couple was forced to wade in the freezing water from about 5 p.m. until 10 a.m. the next day. After suffering from two paralytic attacks caused by nerve damage and illness, Urawn died on Jan. 20. “All throughout the night, they were in the cold water shivering, and I along with 15 to 20 villagers were witness to the brutality,” Beneswar Urawn explained. “The villagers kept asking my father if he is ready to forsake Christ and return to the Sarna fold. He reiterated every time, ‘I will not deny Christ … I will continue to believe until my last breath.'” Beneswar explained that his family was not the only one in the village that embraced Christianity over 10 years ago, as nine other families also decided to put their faith in Christ. But amid constant demands that the families return to the indigenous religion, seven of the families caved to threats and renounced Christ.

The police body camera industry is the latest to jump on the artificial intelligence bandwagon, bringing new powers and privacy concerns to a controversial technology bolstered by the need to hold police accountable after numerous high-profile killings of unarmed black citizens. Now, that tech is about to get smarter. Last week, Taser, the stun gun company that has recently become an industry leader in body-mounted cameras, announced the creation of its own in-house artificial intelligence division. The new unit will utilize the company’s acquisition of two AI-focused firms: Dextro, a New York-based computer vision startup, and Misfit, another computer vision company previously owned by the watch manufacturer Fossil. Taser says the newly formed division will develop AI-powered tech specifically aimed at law enforcement, using automation and machine learning algorithms to let cops search for people and objects in video footage captured by on-body camera systems. Moreover, the move suggests that body-worn cameras, which are already being used by police departments in many major cities, could soon become powerful surveillance tools capable of identifying different objects, events, and people encountered by officers on the street — both retroactively and in real time.

India’s only active volcano in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is erupting once again. The Barren Island volcano, located about 140km northeast of Port Blair, started erupting in 1991 after a dormant phase of over 150 years and has shown intermittent activity since then. A team of scientists led by National Institute Of Oceanography‘s Dr Abhay Mudholkar said that the volcano is active and spewing smoke and lava once again. Researchers from the NIO have sampled the sediments and water in the vicinity of the volcano and recovered coal-like black pyroclastic material representing proximal volcanic ejecta. Clouds were seen at the crater mouth where the smoke was bellowing out in an otherwise clear sky. These samples will help in deciphering the nature of the present and past volcanic activity in the region.

Tropical Cyclone Dineo, a Category 4 storm, killed seven people and displaced 130,000 more in Mozambique, the country’s disaster agency reported Friday. “Over 20,000 homes” were destroyed by “winds and very strong rain,” the Mozambique National Institute of Disaster Management said in a statement. It counted 105 schools, 49 hospitals and 52 other public buildings as destroyed in the southern part of the impoverished nation on Africa’s eastern coast. Mozambique frequently endures tropical storms. A flood in 2000, prompted by a storm, killed at least 800 people; another, in 2015, claimed at least 100 lives. The cyclone was downgraded Thursday as it reached South Africa, but the South Africa Weather Service warned that heavy rainfall and flooding are expected. The storm is expected to continue through Saturday; nearly 8 inches of rain and sustained winds of 60 mph are expected in South Africa’s Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo regions, the country’s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Ministry said.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday directly asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to slow the building of settlements in the West Bank and said he was confident the two nations could come to a peace agreement with the Palestinians. Trump and Netanyahu addressed reporters at a press conference before the two met privately at the White House. A reporter asked whether Trump and Netanyahu were on the same page regarding settlements. “As far as settlements, I’d like to see you hold back on settlements for a little bit,” Trump said while turning toward Netanyahu. “We’ll work something out, but I would like to see a deal be made. I think a deal will be made.” In an answer full of twists and turns, Trump wavered on a US commitment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying it “looked like it will be the easier of the two” but that he could “live with” a one-state solution. A senior White House official said the United States would no longer seek to dictate the terms of any eventual peace settlement, but would support what the two sides agree to together. “A two-state solution that doesn’t bring peace is not a goal that anybody wants to achieve,” the official said on condition of anonymity. “Peace is the goal, whether that comes in the form of a two-state solution if that’s what the parties want, or something else if that’s what the parties want.” “That’s going to be up to them, we are not going to dictate what the terms of peace are going to be,” said the official.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met secretly with the CIA chief in the West Bank, Palestinian officials said Wednesday, as they expressed concern over the Trump administration’s suggestion that a two-state solution to the conflict with Israel is optional. Mike Pompeo and Abbas held talks Tuesday at the Palestinian government compound in the city of Ramallah, the first high-level contacts between the Palestinian leader and administration officials, said two senior officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters about the meeting. The White House and the CIA declined comment. One of the Palestinian officials said Abbas briefed Pompeo on Palestinian positions ahead of Wednesday’s White House talks between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Palestinian leadership had previously expressed concern it would be sidelined by an administration seen as being closely aligned with Israel. The Palestinians were given a new cause for concern when a White House official told reporters in Washington that the two-state solution — a cornerstone of American diplomacy for more than two decades — was not the only option for resolving the conflict.

President Donald Trump was prepared to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem the moment he took office, but reconsidered after taking into account how it would impact Israel’s relationship with its Arab neighbors, a top Republican official revealed on Monday. Moving the embassy to Israel’s capital had been one of Trump’s strongest campaigning points, and he had planned on making the controversial policy change the first of his presidency, Senator Bob Corker told The Global Politico podcast in an interview, saying, “I think that was going to be their first move at one point.” “At one point they were ready to move the Embassy at 12:01 on January 20th. Maybe 12 and 30 seconds.” Indeed, in the earliest days of his tenure, Trump’s team had already begun making statements on a possible move. However, Corker said, after considering the issue from a different angle, the president chose to hold back in order to better promote Israel’s interests. The Iran deal “brought the Arab community close to Israel. And so there’s a real working relationship there right now” which Trump didn’t want to jeopardize, Corker explained.

Today the Temple Institute unveiled a brand new set of sacred vessels to be used in the Holy Temple: twelve gold-plated silver pans designed to hold the twelve loaves of showbread. The showbread was baked weekly and the loaves were placed in golden pans, which are set on the Showbread Table. The purpose of the specially designed pans is to enable the showbread loaves to maintain their unique shape all throughout the week, according to the Torah commandment. The twelve loaves of Showbread were baked each Friday by a particular Kohanic family, and were placed upon the twelve shelves of the Golden Table of the Showbread on Shabbat. The new loaves were placed as the old loaves were being removed, thereby fulfilling the commandment, “And you shall place showbread on the table before Me at all times” (Ex. 25:30). Now that the Temple Institute has completed the construction of the Golden Table of the Showbread, the two Golden Bezichin (Frankincense holders which were placed on the table) and the twelve Golden Pans, it is our fervent prayer that these vessels will soon be in service in the rebuilt Holy Temple!

The meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump will be closely watched in Jerusalem, of course, but just as closely in Amman, less than 50 miles away. Jordan’s King Abdullah has already met the American president, although briefly, and a second one-on-one meeting is scheduled soon. Jordan’s King Abdullah was the first Arab leader to meet with the new president earlier this month when both attended the National Prayer Breakfast. The Palestinians, in contrast, have struggled to make connections with the Trump Administration. Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat told media outlets that the president had rebuffed overtures from Abbas repeatedly, although security officials did meet the Palestinian security chief Majed Faraj last week. The lack of close ties between the Palestinian Authority and Washington makes Jordan nervous as well. About three-quarters of Jordan’s population are Palestinians, while many of the Palestinians who live on the West Bank hold Jordanian citizenship. Jordan has historically played an important role in the Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, which have been a flashpoint of Israeli-Palestinian violence in the past. Days later, Netanyahu announced that almost 6,000 new homes will be built in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, another move that Palestinians say takes aim at a future independent Palestinian state. On both of these issues, analysts say, Jordan stepped in to argue the Palestinian case. “I met the King a few days ago and he said he spoke with US officials about the consequences of moving the US embassy (to Jerusalem), and the damaging role of enlarging the settlements,” Oraib al-Rantawi, the director of the Al-Quds Center in Amman, told The Media Line. “The King told the president that these moves could put an end to a viable Palestinian state, which would also affect Jordan’s stability and security.”

In the Middle East, what they say is not what they mean, and what they mean is not what they say. According to The New York Times, US President Donald Trump is “developing a strategy on the Israeli- Palestinian conflict that would enlist Arab nations like Saudi Arabia and Egypt to break years of deadlock.” It would behoove his new foreign policy team to reflect carefully on these words before forging ahead with Middle East diplomacy. The key to any possible path to conflict resolution in this region is to understand the shifting web of “interests” that motivate the players on this chessboard in the sand. During meetings in Egypt and Israel this past week, almost everyone I spoke with cautioned against over-reaching beyond what is possible for the region at this time. The American abstention on UNSC Resolution 2334 has cast a dark cloud. For the first time ever, an Israeli presence over the 1949 armistice line is labeled an internationally recognized illegal act, with the blessing of the United States. What I heard from those on the ground, including an international observer, is that 2334 will become a major obstacle to a two-state solution, the exact opposite of what the Obama administration claimed was their intent.

Meanwhile, Jordan will also be represented by a “high level delegation”, Government Spokesperson and Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani said. Headline: Syria war: ‘Dozens killed’ as jihadists clash in Idlib
Dozens of fighters have been killed in clashes between two jihadist factions in northern Syria, reports say. The battles involved Tahrir al-Sham, formerly an al-Qaeda affiliate, and Jund al-Aqsa, regarded as close to so-called Islamic State (IS). UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the fighting was a “war for influence” in Idlib province. Nearly 70 people have been killed in the latest fighting, which began on Monday morning, according to the SOHR and a rebel commander. Tahrir al-Sham has captured six villages from Jund al-Aqsa, the SOHR said. The two sides are also reported to have clashed in the north of neighbouring Hama province. Idlib province, in the country’s north-west, has long been a rebel stronghold, dominated by Ahrar al-Sham and JFS/Tahrir al-Sham. The SOHR said the fighting erupted after Jund al-Aqsa carried out a suicide bombing on Tahrir al-Sham, killing nine people, AFP news agency reported. However, a Jund al-Aqsa commander told the Associated Press that Tahrir al-Sham had attacked his group’s positions first.

Russian jets pounded rebel-held areas of the Syrian city of Deraa on Tuesday for a second day in the first such intensive bombing campaign since Moscow’s major intervention in Syria more than a year ago, rebels and witnesses said. Rebel groups on Sunday stormed the heavily-garrisoned Manshiya district in a battle dubbed “Death rather than Humiliation” saying the campaign sought to obstruct any army attempts to capture a strategic border crossing with Jordan. The army’s control of the rebel held crossing and swatches of territory in the southern strip of the city would sever the rebel link between the eastern and west parts of the city. The Syrian army said the “terrorists” had failed to make gains and its troops had inflicted many casualties. State media said the armed insurgents showered civilian districts of the southern city with mortars, wrecking many homes. The opposition fighters are drawn from both moderate Free Syrian Army groups and members of a newly formed alliance – Tahrir al Sham – spearheaded by a faction that was once al-Qaeda’s official affiliate. A rebel source said there were at least 30 Russian sorties on Tuesday, thwarting further rebel gains in the heavily defended enclave that had allowed them so far to secure significant parts of the Manshiya. “When the regime began to lose control of some areas … the Russian jets began their operations,” said Ibrahim Abdullah, a senior rebel commander.

The United Nations is warning of catastrophic flooding in Syria from the Tabqa dam, which is at risk from high water levels, deliberate sabotage by Islamic State (IS) and further damage from air strikes by the U.S.-led coalition. The earth-filled dam holds back the Euphrates River 40 km (25 miles) upstream of the IS stronghold of Raqqa and has been controlled by IS since 2014. Water levels on the river have risen by about 10 meters since Jan. 24, due partly to heavy rainfall and snow and partly to IS opening three turbines of the dam, flooding riverside areas downstream, according to a U.N. report seen by Reuters on Wednesday. “As per local experts, any further rise of the water level would submerge huge swathes of agricultural land along the river and could potentially damage the Tabqa Dam, which would have catastrophic humanitarian implications in all areas downstream,” it said. The entrance to the dam was already damaged by airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition, it said. “For example, on 16 January 2017, airstrikes on the western countryside of Ar-Raqqa impacted the entrance of the Euphrates Dam, which, if further damaged, could lead to massive scale flooding across Ar-Raqqa and as far away as Deir-ez-Zor.” The town of Deir-ez-Zor, or Deir al-Zor, is a further 140 km downstream from Raqqa, and is besieged by IS. The U.N. estimates that 93,500 civilians are trapped in the town, and it has been airdropping food to them for a year.

The Turkish Army and their rebel associates have recently intensified their attacks against the Kurdish-led “Syrian Democratic Forces” (SDF) in northern Syria, despite the fact they are nowhere near the front-lines with the Islamic State (ISIS). Turkish-backed rebels boasted on their social media accounts, Tuesday, about targeting the Kurdish forces in the northern countryside of Aleppo. The constant harassment of the Kurdish forces is part of the Turkish Army’s plan in Syria, as their battle with the Islamic State is just a facade that is hiding their true intentions. Fearful of a PKK (outlawed Kurdish group in Turkey) safe-haven in northern Syria, the Turkish Army has shifted their attention to the YPG and SDF controlled towns in the Al-Raqqa, Aleppo, and Al-Hasakah governorates. While no major clashes have begun yet, the Turkish Army and their rebel allies have recently stated they plan on continuing their military operations until they seize Raqqa City. This presents a problem because the SDF is currently involved in a heated battle against the Islamic State forces in the western countryside of Al-Raqqa. Should the Turkish Armed Forces choose to launch this Al-Raqqa offensive, they will no doubt run into the SDF and YPG units that are surrounding the provincial capital.

Soleimani is visiting Moscow to express his displeasure with the Russian government over their relationship with Saudi Arabia and other Arab states, mainly regarding weapons deals and strengthening economic ties, sources told Fox News. “These are two countries that want to cause trouble for the United States, and they’re talking together which means even more trouble for the United States,” House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, told Fox News’ “Happening Now.” He added, “If there are no consequences to violating sanctions, then they’ll just do more of it.” The CIA would not immediately answer a request for comment. Earlier in the day Geo TV, citing Khan, said two people had died in the attack but that figure was later revised to one. Federal Reserve Bank of New York houses the largest known depository of gold in the world. Late last week the German government moved $13 billion worth of gold from New York to Frankfurt. None of that gold, of course, belongs to the Fed. The Federal Reserve doesn’t own a single ounce of gold. Almost all of that gold is owned by foreign governments and central banks. It’s been that way since the end of World War II—European governments wanted to store their wealth overseas, out of the reach of the Soviet Union. As a kind of professional courtesy among governments and central banks, their gold has been stored for free by the Fed for the last 70+ years. Even after the Soviet Union fell, most governments still chose to keep their gold in New York. It was safe. America was a rich, trusted ally. Why bother moving it? Fast forward a few decades and the world has clearly changed. The US government is in debt up to its eyeballs. It has been caught blatantly spying on its own allies. And it’s much less predictable than ever before. Germany was among the first out the door. Even as early as 2013, the German government announced that they would bring back at least half of their country’s gold reserves (the second largest in the world) by the end of 2020. They’re ahead of schedule. Late last week the German government moved $13 billion worth of gold from New York to Frankfurt. That shipment puts them nearly at their goal, almost four years earlier than planned.

The number of hate crimes committed in the US has risen for the second year in succession, said the Southern Poverty Law Center, which works to combat domestic racism and extremism, in a report issued Wednesday. The Center made a direct connection between the “radical right” and Donald Trump, saying his election as president had “energized” such groups. The annual census found that the rise in extremism posed the greatest threat to the Muslim community, saying that the number of anti-Muslim hate groups almost tripled from 34 in 2015 to 101 in 2016. This growth, the Center said, was “accompanied by a rash of crimes targeting Muslims.” Meanwhile, A majority of police forces in England and Wales saw record levels of hate crimes in the first full three months following the EU referendum, according to new analysis. More than 14,000 hate crimes were recorded between July and September. In 10 forces the number of suspected hate crimes increased by more than 50%, compared to the previous three months. Those 5,468 reports indicated there had been a spike in reports – supporting anecdotal evidence across the country of an increased number of threatening, violent or abusive incidents.

Residents of a coastal area southwest of Houston are cleaning up debris after severe storms, including at least six tornadoes, swept through the area. At least six people were injured in Van Vleck, about 70 miles southwest of Houston, by a weak tornado rated by a federal survey team as of EF1 strength with winds of 86 to 110 mph. An EF2 tornado with winds of 111-135 mph caused extensive damage to subdivisions 27 miles southwest of Houston. A weak tornado also was confirmed in Wharton. Elsewhere, more than 3 inches of rain fell in some areas west of Austin, and rain was mixing with snow in the Texas Panhandle, resulting in slick roads and delays in school openings.

Headline: A massive lake of molten carbon the size of Mexico is discovered under the US
A huge well of molten carbon that would spell disaster for the planet if released has been found under the US. Scientists using the world’s largest array of seismic sensors have mapped a deep-Earth area, covering 700,000 sq miles (1.8 million sq km). This is around the size of Mexico, and researchers say it has the potential to cause untold environmental damage. The study, conducted by geologists at Royal Holloway University in London, used a huge network of 583 seismic sensors that measure the Earth’s vibrations, to create a picture of the area’s deep sub surface. What they found was a vast buried deposit of molten carbon, which produces carbon dioxide and other gases, situated under the Western US, 217 miles (350km) beneath the Earth’s surface. As a result of this study, scientists now believe the amount of CO2 in the Earth’s upper mantle may be up to 100 trillion metric tons. In comparison, the US Environmental Protection Agency estimates the global carbon emission in 2011 was nearly 10 billion metric tons – a tiny amount in comparison. The area covered by the study includes Yellowstone National Park, where previous research has uncovered evidence of a supervolcano which could also spell danger for the planet.

Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin expressed support for officially extending Israeli sovereignty to Judea and Samaria, during his address at the 14th annual Jerusalem Conference sponsored by the Besheva Media Group. “I, Ruby Rivlin, believe that Zion is entirely ours,” he declared, referring to himself by his nickname “Ruby.” “I believe the sovereignty of the State of Israel must be in all the blocs (of Judea and Samaria).” The president’s remarks were made against a backdrop of significant debate between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and many of his coalition ministers with regards as to how to proceed with Israeli policy on Judea and Samaria in the era of President Donald Trump. Rivlin shared what he felt to be some of the ramifications and consequences for Israel in extending sovereignty to Judea and Samaria. “Applying sovereignty to an area gives citizenship to all those living there,” he stressed. “It must be clear: If we extend sovereignty, the law must apply equally to all. Yahya Sanwar has been elected to lead Hamas in the Gaza Strip after internal elections were held for the organization’s institutional and leadership positions, according to reports from Al Jazeera. Khalil al-Haya has been chosen to serve as Sanwar’s deputy. Sanwar was on the most senior officials released by Israel in the Shalit deal in which hundreds of terrorists and political prisoners were released in exchange for the return of captured IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. He has developed a reputation as being among the most radical in Hamas, calling since his release for further kidnappings of IDF soldiers, and is thought of as the link between the military and political wing the terror organization. With his ascent to power, Sanwar will take the reins to rule the strip from Khaled Mashal, despite Ismail Haniyeh being slated to fill the top spot. When released from prison in 2011, Sanwar lamented the fact that other prisoners still remained in Israeli jails. “We feel that we left our hearts behind us, we left many prisoners behind. This is a great victory for our people and out resistance.” During the same speech, the stanch Hamas activists called on Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, to undertake fierce efforts to kidnap more soldiers to bring about the release of more Palestinian prisoners. Sanwar, who for a long period of time has been marked as a potential candidate in the elections, represents stark differences from his predecessor Mashal. As far as Sanwar’s new deputy is concerned, Khalil al-Haya has also earned a reputation for being among the more radical elements of Hamas and was a member of the negotiating team in the Shalit negotiations.

A recent video from the Temple Institute concluded unequivocally that the Third Temple will not simply descend from Heaven, begging the question ‘Why don’t Jews begin building today?’ The man in charge of organizing the Third Temple construction thinks he knows what it will take to jump-start the process. Last week, the Temple Institute released the second video in their “Holy Temple Mythbusters” series, titled “Falling from Heaven”. Rabbi Chaim Richman, the institute’s international director, opened the video with the question, “The Bet Hamikdash (Temple) is supposed to come down from heaven: true or false?” Using rabbinic methodology, Rabbi Richman said that it is a Biblical commandment to build a Temple, as clearly stated in the Bible. Like any other commandment, it is incumbent upon the Jews to perform it themselves, and not to wait for God to perform it for them. Rabbi Richman’s conclusion is a challenge to those who maintain that the Third Temple will descend from Heaven, but it is a strong vote of confidence for those who advocate Jews move forward in this endeavor. No arms outside control of state.” Contrary to the spirit of Resolution 1701, the Lebanese president Michel Aoun expressed support for Hezbollah assuming a military role on behalf of Lebanon. “(Hezbollah) has a complementary role to the Lebanese army,” he said to the Egyptian TV network CBC on Sunday night. “As long as the Lebanese army is not strong enough to fight Israel, we believe in the need for it to exist.” Israel and Lebanon are still officially enemy states of each other. The town in Syria’s Aleppo province is the last stronghold of the militant group in the region, and has also been the target of an assault by Syrian government forces. Erdogan, speaking in Istanbul, said Al-Bab “is now besieged from all fronts.” “Our forces entered the center,” he added, saying it was “only a matter of time” before the alliance of Turkish forces and rebels took control of the town. “Daesh forces have begun leaving Al-Bab completely,” he said. Turkish forces and allied fighters entered Al-Bab for the first time on Saturday, from the west, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Britain-based monitor reported heavy clashes inside western Al-Bab on Sunday, as well as on the northern edge of the town, where Turkish forces and rebels were advancing but had not yet entered the town. One Turkish soldier was killed and two soldiers wounded in clashes with Daesh militants, the Turkish Dogan news agency reported.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently told journalists in Ankara that his forces will continue their military operations in Syria after they capture Al-Bab. Erdogan specifically stated that his forces will concentrate on Raqqa City, which is currently under the control of the Islamic State (ISIS). However, this presents quite a problem for Erdogan because the quickest way to get to Raqqa City from Al-Bab is through the main highway that flows through Deir Hafer, which is another Islamic State stronghold. The Turkish Armed Forces are currently cutoff from this highway, thanks in large part to the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) recent advances south of Al-Bab. Moreover, the Syrian Arab Army is now pushing towards the village of Al-Sukkariya in order to completely close off the Turkish Armed Forces from the Maskanah Plains of east Aleppo. So with the Aleppo-Raqqa Highway cutoff and Al-Sukkariya soon to be under the Syrian Arab Army’s control, the Turkish Armed Forces and their rebel allies will have to choose an alternative route. This alternative route requires the Turkish Armed Forces to go through the Syrian Democratic Forces’ (SDF) front-lines in northern Al-Raqqa, which is also a much faster route to the Islamic State stronghold. If the Kurdish forces do not voluntarily withdraw from this area in northern Al-Raqqa, a large battle will likely ensue in the weeks following the Turkish Army’s capture of Al-Bab.

Headline: Iraqi military attacks ISIS leader, his fate remains unknown
The Iraqi military has officially addressed the reports on Monday claiming that the leader of the Islamic State (ISIS), Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was injured over the weekend in an aerial assault. According to the army’s statement, Iraqi forces were following a convoy that included among others, the leader of the terror organization, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and thus managed to literally blow up a meeting between the leaders of the organization. During the attack, 13 people were killed, but the fate of al-Baghdadi himself remains unclear. According to the Iraqi military’s statement, the terror organization’s leadership was set to convene in a house near the town of Al-Qa’im (Anbar province) which is in the vicinity of the Syrian border. Al-Baghdadi was making his way to the area in order to meet with the organization’s state leaders to discuss the collapse of their influence in the strategic city of Mosul, as well as choose an heir to al-Baghdadi. On Sunday, the American channel in Arabic Alhurra reported that al-Baghdadi was seriously injured in the Iraqi Air Force attack in the western district of Al Anbar. The broadcast was based on a report by an intelligence security official, associated with the Iraqi Ministry of Interior. According to the same official, the authorities received information stating that al-Baghdadi was in Al-Qaim’s al-Sala region on February 9. The information was passed on to the Iraqi Air Force who then executed the attack that injured al-Baghdadi—who was then transferred back to Syria. On Sunday, the Iraqi military stated that the reports regarding al-Baghdadi have yet to be confirmed.

The clashes broke out as the protesters attempted to cross the bridge that links Tahrir Square where they had gathered and the heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses government buildings, embassies and international organizations. In a statement reacting to the killing of his followers on Saturday evening, Sadr said: “Their blood won’t have been shed in vain.” He promised “peaceful” retaliation.

He noted that while a number of Russian bombers have recently flown through Iran’s airspace, none landed for refueling. Russia is hosting a conference in Moscow this week that will bring together Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, India and Iran to discuss a possible solution of the conflict in Afghanistan. Its efforts, however, have encountered controversies at the very outset. The last conference Moscow hosted on Afghanistan in December included only China and Pakistan, prompting a strong protest from the Afghan government. A South Sudanese general has resigned from the army, accusing the country’s president of “ethnic cleansing.” In a resignation letter seen by AFP on Sunday, Lieutenant-General Thomas Cirillo Swaka said he had “lost patience with the conduct” of President Salva Kiir, who has led the country since its independence from Sudan in 2011. Cirillo, the deputy head of logistics, said that Kiir and the national army—known as the SPLA—had “systematically frustrated the implementation” of a peace agreement struck in 2015 between Kiir and former vice-president Riek Machar. The United Nations and others have warned that the fighting is increasingly proceeding along ethnic lines. Kiir is from the majority Dinka tribe, while Machar hails from the Nuer minority. Dinka make up around one-third of the country’s population, while Nuer constitute around 16 percent, according to the CIA World Factbook. Former U.N. secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, writing in Newsweek, warned that forces loyal to both Kiir and Machar had been implicated in “mass atrocities” that were at risk of escalating into genocide.

Libya’s UN-backed unity government on Sunday slammed the creation by armed groups of a national guard rival to its own Presidential Guard in the capital Tripoli. The Government of National Accord (GNA) said it considered the creation of the Libyan National Guard to be “an attempt to form a parallel body to the Presidential Guard” it has formed. “These groups and those supporting it are considered to be outlaws,” the GNA said in a statement. “And they will be treated as such by the security and judiciary bodies.” The GNA warned that the formation of a rival guard was an attempt “to lead the capital into bloody armed conflict.” On Thursday, armed groups mostly from the western city of Misrata, announced the creation of the Libyan National Guard” to continue the fight against Daesh, as well as to secure state institutions and diplomatic missions. But they did not say whether or not it would support the GNA, which has struggled to assert its authority across Libya since taking office in the capital last year.

Athens’s half a million Muslims are set to get their first official mosque in more than a century. The city has not had a formal mosque since it drove out occupying Ottomans in 1833, and Deputy Foreign Minister Ioannis Amanantidis told parliament last year that it was the only European capital “to be deprived of such a religious space”. For years Muslims have resorted to praying in hundreds of makeshift sites, in crowded basements or dark warehouses targeted by racist attackers. In May, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras declared building a mosque long overdue. The government, he said, would push ahead “out of respect for the Muslim residents in our capital, but also because we are obliged to actively defend our values.” The new mosque – a 1,000 square meter building without a minaret, split over two levels – is expected to be ready in April in an old naval base in an industrial, rundown part of Athens. “We need the mosque for our new generation, for our youth … to feel equal in law, equal in society,” said Greece’s Muslim Association spokeswoman Anna Stamou, a Greek who converted to Islam.

A Boko Haram ambush in northeastern Nigeria killed seven army recruits and injured 20 more, with three soldiers missing, an army officer said. A convoy of army trucks and buses, carrying about 250 troops, was traveling through Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state on Thursday when it was attacked by soldiers of the militant Islamist group. A prolonged firefight ended before the army could send reinforcements. The Boko Haram troops stole a variety of military supplies from the convoy before it fled into surrounding foliage, army sources told the Nigerian newspaper Premium Times. They added that one of the missing Nigerian army soldiers is a woman.

Police and witnesses in Pakistan say that a suicide bomber detonated a blast at a protest rally in the eastern city of Lahore, killing at least 13 people and wounding around 85 others. Two senior police officers were among the dead and rescue workers feared the toll was likely to increase. The rally was being staged outside the provincial legislature by chemists and pharmaceutical manufacturers who oppose new regulations. Witnesses said the slain police officers were negotiating with protest leaders to seek an end to the rally when the bomb exploded. It was not clear immediately whether a planted device or a suicide bomber conducted the blast. A breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the violence in the capital city of the country’s most populous Punjab province. A spokesman for Jamaat-ul-Ahrar said one of its suicide bomber carried out the attack. The bomb attack in the second largest Pakistani city came after an overnight roadside bomb killed three soldiers in a volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Tens of thousands of Romanians took to the streets Sunday in freezing cold weather, demanding the government resign as they accused it of attempting to water down anti-corruption laws. “Thieves! Resign!” chanted protesters gathered in Victory Square to mark the 13th consecutive day of anti-government demonstrations in the Romanian capital, Bucharest. An estimated crowd of 50,000 protesters took part in the Bucharest march, according to Romanian media reports. Authorities did not give any number of their own. Responding to a call on social media, the protesters held up their mobile phone flashlights against colored pieces of paper, lighting up the cold night air with the blue, yellow and red of the national flag. A huge slogan projected onto a nearby building read “Resist.” Some protesters held up banners with the message “Stop corruption! Fighting for democracy.” Thousands of people also protested in the cities of Cluj, Sibiu, Iasi and Timisoara. The demonstrations, the largest since the ousting and summary execution of communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989, have continued despite the resignation of justice minister Florin Iordache Thursday.

Residents have been on lockdown as armed police tried to tackle the rioters who have caused millions of pounds of damage. Police were hit with molotov cocktails and the heavy metal balls used in the French game Petanque. And after setting cars and even a disability vehicle on fire the police have been forced to fire live rounds of bullets. A reporter for the French TV company BMTV was also injured after being attacked. The French Government’s response to the latest outbreaks of violence is to put 2,600 cameras on police officers to record them out on the job.

North Korea says it has successfully completed the launch of a new ballistic missile, according to state media. The Pukguksong-2, previously unpublicized part of its arsenal which North Korean state media described as a medium long-range ballistic missile, was test fired on Sunday under the supervision of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency, KCNA. Kim was present at the site and personally gave the order for the launch, which was the first missile test by Pyongyang since US President Donald Trump took office, KCNA reported. The agency described the missile as a “Korean style new type strategic weapon system.” South Korea and the United States confirmed the launch Sunday. The United Nations Security Council said it plans to hold consultations on an “urgent basis” Monday afternoon regarding North Korea, according to the US Mission to the United Nations. The meeting was requested by the United States, South Korea and Japan — whose Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, was visiting President Trump in the United States when the launch occurred. “North Korea’s most recent missile launch is absolutely intolerable. In the shadow of Donald Trump’s spree of controversial actions, the European commission has quietly launched the next offensive in the war on cash. These unelected bureaucrats have boldly asserted their intention to crack down on paper transactions across the E.U. and solidify a trend that has been gaining momentum for years. The financial uncertainty amplified by Brexit has incentivized governments throughout Europe to seize further control over their banking systems. France and Spain have already criminalized cash transactions above a certain limit, but now the commission has unilaterally established new regulations that will affect the entire union. The fear of physical money flowing out of the trade bloc has manifested a draconian response from the State. The European Action Plan doesn’t mention a specific dollar amount for restrictions, but as expected, their reasoning for the move is to thwart money laundering and the financing of terrorism. Border checks between countries have already been bolstered to help implement these new standards on hard assets. Although these end goals are plausible, there are other clear motivations for governments to target paper money that aren’t as noble. Negative interest rates and high inflation are a deadly combination that could further destabilize the already fragile union in the future. With less physical currency circulating, these trends ensure that the impact of any additional central bank policies will be maximized. If economic conditions deteriorate, the threat of citizens pulling cash out of their accounts and starting a bank run is eliminated in a cashless system. So long as the people’s wealth is under centralized control, funds can be shifted at will to conceal any underlying problems. But the longer this shell game is allowed to persist, the more painful it will be when reality overrides the manipulation.

In the age of Trump, America’s biggest foreign creditors are suddenly having second thoughts about financing the U.S. government. In Japan, the largest holder of Treasuries, investors culled their stakes in December by the most in almost four years, the Ministry of Finance’s most recent figures show. What’s striking is the selling has persisted at a time when going abroad has rarely been so attractive. And it’s not just the Japanese. Across the world, foreigners are pulling back from U.S. debt like never before. From Tokyo to Beijing and London, the consensus is clear: few overseas investors want to step into the $13.9 trillion U.S. Treasury market right now. Whether it’s the prospect of bigger deficits and more inflation under President Donald Trump or higher interest rates from the Federal Reserve, the world’s safest debt market seems less of a sure thing — particularly after the upswing in yields since November. And then there is Trump’s penchant for saber rattling, which has made staying home that much easier. Nobody is saying that foreigners will abandon Treasuries altogether. After all, they still hold $5.94 trillion, or roughly 43 percent of the U.S. government debt market. (Though that’s down from 56 percent in 2008.) A significant drawdown can harm major holders like Japan and China as much as it does the U.S. Nevertheless, any consistent drop-off in foreign demand could have lasting consequences on America’s ability to finance itself cheaply, particularly in light of Trump’s ambitious plans to boost infrastructure spending, cut taxes and put “America First.” The president has singled out Japan and China, the two biggest overseas creditors, as well as Germany, for devaluing their currencies to gain an unfair advantage in trade.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he fears Britain will divide the European Union’s 27 remaining members by making different promises to each country during its Brexit negotiations. “The other EU 27 don’t know it yet, but the Brits know very well how they can tackle this,” Juncker told Deutschlandfunk radio. “They could promise country A this, country B that and country C something else and the end game is that there is not a united European front.” Britain will by the end of March trigger formal divorce talks with the EU, a major test for the bloc which is struggling to have a grip on other challenges like keeping Greece in the euro zone, the refugee crisis and the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president. To add to all of that, the Netherlands, France and Germany are holding general elections this year, in which populist anti-EU parties are expected to make strong showings. “Now everyone is saying in relation to Trump and Brexit: ‘Now is Europe’s big chance. Now is the time to close ranks and march together,’” Juncker said in the radio interview which will be aired on Sunday. “I wish it will be like this, but will it happen? I have some doubt. Because the Brits will manage without big effort to divide the remaining 27 member states.”

Headline: At least 749 earthquakes hit Dardanelles Turkey since Feb 6
At least 749 earthquakes have hit the Marmara province of Çanakkale since Feb. 6, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has stated. The first wave of the earthquakes was recorded on Feb. 6 at 6:51 a.m. in the province’s Ayvacık district with a 5.3-magnitude temblor. That was followed by another one with the same magnitude at 13.58 p.m. on the same day, and the latest major quake occurred in Ayvacık on Feb. 12 with the same magnitude, according to AFAD. A number of buildings in the region were damaged and many locals settled in tent cities set up near the village of Yukarıköy, which was severely damaged by the quakes. AFAD and the Turkish Red Crescent are currently setting up a container city for victims in the area. Schools in the district were also canceled for a week due to the earthquakes. The Çanakkale Governor’s Office announced on Feb. 7 that eight people were injured in the first quake on Feb. 6, five of whom were discharged from hospital and three of whom were in a stable condition.
