Headline:      UN, EU help Palestinians build ICC suit against Israel

The United Nations and the European Union have actively helped the Palestinian Authority build its global advocacy campaign against the Jewish state; including it’s filing of “war crimes” complaints” about Israel before the International Criminal Court. Over the last year the UN and the EU were participants in the creation of a $2.1 million empowerment plan for Palestinian women. However, according to the details of the plan, which was unveiled Wednesday in Ramallah, $1.3 million of that sum would be spent on internationalized activities to fight Israel’s “occupation” of  the West Bank. The plan was designed with the help of a 481,773 Euro grant from the EU so that Palestinians could comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

Headline:        Saudi power station hit by rockets fired from Yemen

Rocket fire from Yemen struck a power station in southern Saudi Arabia on Friday, emergency workers said, a day after US Secretary of State John Kerry announced a new peace initiative. The strike on the transformer in Najran which lies just across the Yemen border, marked a rare hit on Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure despite months of periodic bombardment of the area. Attacks have intensified since the suspension in early August of United Nations-brokered peace talks between the Houthi rebels and their allies, and Yemen’s internationally-recognised government. In the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah on Thursday, Kerry outlined a plan which offers the Houthis participation in government in exchange for an end to violence and a surrender of weapons. The rebels, allied with forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, have so far not commented on the plan which Kerry described after meeting with his Gulf counterparts, a British minister and the UN peace envoy to Yemen. He said Washington was “deeply troubled” by rebel attacks on Saudi territory, where more than 100 soldiers and civilians have been killed in cross-border bombardments and skirmishes.

Headline:    Egypt’s ISIS affiliate kills police driver in the Sinai

Egyptian security officials on Thursday said a police driver kidnapped this week has been publicly shot dead in Sinai by suspected jihadists from the local Islamic State (ISIS) affiliate. The officials, quoted by The Associated Press, said three terrorists and the policeman arrived Thursday at el-Arish’s residential al-Masaeed district in a green pickup truck. The policeman, blindfolded with his arms and legs tied by a robe, was then brought out and shot twice in the head. He had been kidnapped by the jihadists Tuesday while driving a police car in el-Arish. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Syria Headline:     Rebels, civilians allowed to evacuate from Daraya

Thousands of rebel fighters and civilians are to evacuate the besieged town of Daraya near the Syrian capital under an accord struck on Thursday, state news agency SANA said. “Seven hundred armed men with their personal weapons will leave Daraya to head to the (rebel-controlled) city of Idlib, while thousands of men and women with their families will be taken to reception centres,” it said. The rebels would have to surrender other armaments to the army. A military source told AFP that the army would enter Daraya, which has been under a regime siege for the past four years, after the evacuation from the rebel-held town. A rebel official in the town said the evacuation would begin on Friday, while a Syrian source on the ground said it would last four days. “The civilians will go to regions under regime control around Damascus, rebels will go to Idlib “or sort out their situation with the regime”, the rebel official said.

Eleven children were killed on Thursday in a barrel bomb attack carried out by government forces on a rebel-held neighborhood of Syria’s Aleppo city, a monitor said. “Fifteen civilians, among them 11 children, were killed in a barrel bomb attack on the Bab al-Nayrab neighborhood” in the south of Aleppo city, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said. The group also reported eight civilians, including two children, were killed on Thursday in rebel fire on the government-held west of the city. An AFP journalist in Bab al-Nayrab saw rescue workers and civilians digging through the rubble of collapsed buildings. Fighting for Aleppo city has intensified since regime troops seized control of the last supply route into rebel-held areas in mid-July. After a nearly three-week siege, rebels early this month linked up with opposition-held neighborhoods via a new road from the city’s south, in a major blow to fighters loyal to Assad. But fighting has continued near the new supply line, which has been bombarded almost daily in recent days, affecting supplies coming into the city’s opposition-controlled neighborhoods. An AFP correspondent in the city’s rebel-held east said on Thursday that vegetables and meat were becoming more scarce than in days after the siege was broken. A litre of fuel had risen from 700 Syria pounds ($3.25, 2.90 euros) earlier this month to 1,200 Syrian pounds, he said.

Syria Headline: Syrian Kurds clash with Turkish forces

DEBKAfile military and intelligence sources: More than a day after Turkey launched its invasion of northern Syria aimed at capturing the city of Jarablus from ISIS, it appears that the terrorist organization has left the city without a fight. On Thursday, pro-Turkish Syrian militias, in cooperation with the Turkish military, took control of most of Jarablus as well as the main roads to and from the city from the east, west and south. Syria’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement the previous day condemning the invasion and calling it a violation of the country’s sovereignty, but DEBKAfile‘s intelligence sources report that Turkey’s move was coordinated in advance with Syrian President Bashar Assad. Meanwhile, US Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday during a joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim in Ankara that Syrian Kurdish forces will lose US support if they don’t retreat to the east bank of the Euphrates River. DEBKAfile‘s intelligence sources report Biden’s statement shows that the US has accepted all of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s terms regarding the Kurds and exposed them to a Turkish military attack if they fail to withdraw. The Kurdish militias operating in northern Syria accuse Washington of abandoning them by cooperating with Turkey’s plan that they say is aimed at blocking Kurdish territorial continuity rather than fighting ISIS. The Kurds have announced that they will fight the Turkish invasion.

Syria Headline:  Turkey-backed rebels aim for another key ISIS-held town

An official in a rebel faction participating in the Turkish-supported cross-border incursion into Syria has revealed that the operation aims to seize Al-Bab, an ISIS-stronghold near both Syrian regime and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) frontlines. Mohammad Abu Ibrahim—a military commander in the Levant Front—told a pro-opposition outlet that the next step of the Euphrates Operation following the capture of Jarablus and surrounding villages, which was achieved Wednesday evening, will be the “commencement of the battle to liberate the strategic town of Al-Bab,” which lies 60 kilometers southwest of Jarablus. In mid-January, Syrian regime forces reached within 10 kilometers of the ISIS-held town, however the offensive grounded to a halt following a counterattack by the jihadist group. The SDF, for its part, advanced on Al-Bab, the largest remaining population center controlled by ISIS in the northeastern Aleppo countryside, during its offensive on Manbij earlier in August. Meanwhile, another opposition figure( Mustafa Sejari, the head of the Mutassim Brigade’s political office) said the Euphrates Shield operation would aim to break ISIS lines around the northern Aleppo town of Marea. “We will not stop until we connect Jarablus to Marea,” he vowed.

A car bomb in Cizre, south-east Turkey, has killed 11 policemen and injured 78. The explosion targeted a checkpoint and left the nearby police HQ in ruins. The banned Kurdistan Workers Party, PKK, said it was behind the attack. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim vowed to give the “vile attackers the answer they deserve”. On Friday, the Kurdish militants denied deliberately targeting Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the secularist Republican People’s Party (CHP), near the north-eastern city of Artvin, on Thursday. Mr Kilicdaroglu escaped unharmed. Turkish military operations in the south-east and retaliatory attacks by the PKK have left hundreds of people dead. Turkey’s PKK conflict shows no sign of abating, says the BBC’s Mark Lowen, and the government has ruled out any negotiations until the group completely disarms.

Hundreds of Syrian rebel fighters — backed by Turkish tanks, warplanes and special forces — had on Wednesday taken the town of Jarabulus to end over three years of extremists’ control. But Defense Minister Fikri Isik warned the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia to move back east across the Euphrates or also face intervention from Turkey.

A U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots toward an Iranian fast-attack craft that approached two U.S. ships, a Pentagon spokesman said on Thursday, in the most serious of a number of incidents in the Gulf area this week. “They did feel compelled ultimately to fire three warning shots and the reason for that is… they had taken steps already to try and de-escalate this situation,” spokesman Peter Cook told reporters. Tensions have increased in the Gulf in recent days despite an improvement in relations between Iran and the United States. Years of mutual animosity eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran in January after a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions but serious differences still remain over Iran’s ballistic missile program, Syria and Iraq. A U.S. defense official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the USS Squall patrol craft fired three warning shots from a .50 caliber gun in the northern Gulf on Wednesday after warning flares did not work. The incident started with three Iranian vessels, but there was only one around by the time the warning shots were fired, the official said. He described the Iranian behavior as “unsafe, unprofessional, and not routine.” At one point, the Iranian vessel came within 200 yards (193 meters) of a U.S. ship, the official said. Another interaction took place between an Iranian and U.S. ship on Wednesday, the defense official said but gave few more details.

Headline:  Death toll from attack on American university in Kabul reaches 12

Warring sides in Afghanistan have made conflicting claims about an overnight airstrike in the troubled southern Helmand province in which at least 24 people died. Provincial Governor Hayatullah Hayat told VOA Friday that Afghan army warplanes struck a Taliban base in the Nad Ali district, destroying the facility and killing “24 enemies,” including their regional commander, and wounding four others. But the Taliban has alleged the attack in Nad Ali was carried out by an American aircraft and it targeted a prison facility. “The attack killed 22 [personnel] of Afghan army and police captured during recent fighting and were being held at the prison,” a statement quoted a Taliban spokesman as claiming. He added that three other captive Afghan forces were wounded and confirmed the killing of three Taliban fighters who were guarding the facility. Area residents have also supported the Taliban accounts, saying both prisoners and Taliban insurgents were among those killed. But the provincial governor rejected those claims while speaking to VOA, saying the facility was an active Taliban base and held no prisoners.

Headline:       Striking Bolivian miners kill deputy government minister

Authorities in Bolivia say striking miners have kidnapped and killed the country’s deputy government minister, who had traveled to the area to mediate in the conflict over mining laws. Government Minister Carlos Romero called it a “cowardly and brutal killing” and asked that the miners turn over the body of deputy minister Rodolfo Illanes. Earlier, Romero and Attorney General Ramiro Guerrero said that Illanes had been kidnapped, but local media reports that he had been beaten to death by the miners had not been confirmed. The strike has turned violent recently with two protesters being killed and riot police failing to clear a highway in a western part of the Andean nation.

Headline:     Islamic Militants Attack Somali Beach Restaurant in Mogadishu

Al-Shabab Islamic militants are claiming responsibility for a terrorist attack on a beach restaurant Tuesday in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. Police say a car bomb blew up outside the eatery on Banadir beach before the gunmen ran inside and opened fire. Somali security forces exchanged gunfire with the militants. One police officer says the militants were “gunned down,” but it is unclear if that means they are dead or if anyone else was killed or wounded. Al-Shabab attacked a neighboring hotel in January, killing more than 20 people. VOA correspondent Harun Maruf reports a separate blast Thursday at a market in the southern Somali town of Bardhere that wounded 12 people, including security officials and the district commissioner. The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab is waging a campaign of terrorism to try to overthrow the Somali government. Police, security officials and tourist spots are their most frequent targets.

Headline:  In Harare, police fire tear gas to disperse opposition protesters

Police in the Zimbabwean capital Harare fired tear gas and used water cannon Friday to disperse opposition demonstrators who had gathered to demand free and fair elections scheduled to be held in 2018. The so-called mega demonstration had been organized by 18 opposition political parties, including the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Morgan Tsvangirai and the Zimbabwe People First, which was formed by former Vice President Joice Mujuru. Judge Hlekani Mwayera of the High Court of Zimbabwe had authorized the march, which called for electoral reforms. The 92-year-old president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has said he will stand again in the upcoming election. Police blocked off the site of the protest. They also beat up people wearing red T-shirts, which is the color of the MDC party. The protesters threw stones at police while others set tires ablaze. Demonstrators also removed the sign for a street named after President Mugabe.

Cincinnati police are asking for the public’s help in trying to identify the source of the suspected heroin behind an estimated 78 overdoses in just two days. Meanwhile, Hamilton County officials say they will seek funding for treatment and expanded response teams. County officials are calling the latest onslaught of overdose cases a public health emergency, and county Health Commissioner Tim Ingram says the number of emergency-room incidents over the last six days was “unprecedented.” Emergency rooms estimate they had 174 suspected opioid overdose cases this week, including three deaths. Last year, accidental drug overdoses killed 3,050 people in Ohio, an average of eight per day, state officials say. Cincinnati City Manager Harry Black said authorities suspect carfentanil, a drug used to sedate elephants and other large animals, may be mixed in with heroin and causing the overdoses. The drug is 100 times more potent than fentanyl, which is suspected in spates of overdoses in several states. Last month, carfentanil was discovered in the Cincinnati area’s heroin stream, but many hospitals don’t have the equipment to test blood for the previously uncommon animal opioid. Meanwhile, Austin police said there were at least 45 K2-related calls involving 52 patients in 24 hours Thursday. EMS, along with the Austin Fire Department and the Austin Police Department, were working the scene throughout the early afternoon hours Thursday as they tried to get control of the situation.

Headline:    Rare twister wreaks havoc in Russia (VIDEO)

A rare tornado has ripped through the suburbs of Syktyvkar, a provincial capital in northwest Russia, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. The twister tore off the roofs of several buildings and fences, felled several trees and power line posts, turned over a van and also damaged a crane at a local lumber mill. No casualties were reported in the aftermath of Wednesday’s tornado, but the twister caused significant damage to the lumber mill and caused a traffic jam by damaging street lights. The disaster hit the republic of Komi, located northwest of the Ural mountains – where such phenomena are a rare sight.

Headline:   Mass protests in West Bank city after Palestinian detainee dies

Nablus, the second largest city in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, was gripped by violent protests on Tuesday after the death of a Palestinian detainee shortly after he was seized by Palestinian security forces. Hundreds of protesters, some throwing stones, marched through the city to denounce the death of Ahmed Halawa, who was seized during a police raid that followed the death of two police officers last week. “Security forces detained Ahmed Izz Halawa during a complicated and delicate security operation in Nablus,” Adnan Al Dmairi, the spokesman for the Palestinian Authority’s security services, said in a statement. Halawa was killed after he was taken to Juneid prison in Nablus, he said, although the exact circumstances of his death were not clear. Akram Al-Rjoub, the governor of Nablus, said Halawa was beaten to death by members of the security forces. Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Al-Hamdallah promised a full investigation, describing the incident as “rare”. Halawa was a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, a militant group linked to the Fatah party.

Israel and Turkey this week will begin the process of exchanging ambassadors as the former allies continued the formal renewal of diplomatic relations after a six-year rift, Turkey’s foreign minister said Tuesday. Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters at a press conference the exchange will take place “in the coming days,” according to a report in Turkish news outlet Haber10. The ambassadors from both countries have yet to be announced. Turkey’s announcement came a day after Jerusalem and Ankara traded fierce recriminations over Israel’s bombardment of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Sunday.

Headline:   Leave Gaza now, State Department warns U.S. citizens

The State Department advised U.S. citizens to avoid Gaza and limit travel in the West Bank after a Palestinian rocket attack led to Israeli bombings in Gaza. In a travel warning issued Tuesday it urged citizens in Gaza “to depart as soon as possible when border crossings are open,” noting that although a cease-fire between Gaza and Israel is in place, “sporadic mortar or rocket fire and corresponding Israeli military response continue to occur.” It added that Gaza, adjacent to Israel’s western border, is “under the control of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization.” It recommended citizens “avoid all travel to the Gaza Strip, and if you are there, leave as soon as you are able.” Israeli military forces carried out up to 50 airstrikes Sunday in Gaza in response to a rocket attack earlier in the day, which struck the Israeli border town of Sderot, Ahram Online News said Wednesday, citing the Times of Israel.

The ministry condemned in an emailed press statement the participation of a congressman from the U.S. State of Utah Mike Lee in the “incursion of settlers into Al-Aqsa Mosque on Tuesday.” Scores of settlers stormed into Al-Aqsa mosque compound through the Dung Gate Tuesday under heavy military protection by Israeli police and took provocative tours in the yards of the holy mosque, according to Palestinian sources. The statement considered the incursion as “illegal and a flagrant intervention in Palestinian affairs,” and as backing the provocative moves by extremist Jewish groups aiming to change the status quo at the mosque.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday for meetings with the kingdom’s senior royals and other Gulf officials for talks focusing on Yemen’s stalled peace process. Kerry is expected to raise U.S. concerns about civilian casualties in Yemen “and our strong desire to ensure that those sorts of casualties are avoided, and that the conduct of the air campaign is done with all proper and appropriate regard for being discriminate and precise,” said a senior State Department official traveling with Kerry. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the meetings and so spoke on condition of anonymity. The United States has backed a Saudi-led coalition of nine Arab countries in a nearly 18-month bombing campaign against Shiite Houthi rebels and their allies in Yemen. The Houthis, who are allied with Saudi Arabia’s regional rival, Iran, seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014. The U.S. has provided logistical and intelligence support to the coalition. The conflict has killed more than 9,000 people, including more than 3,700 civilians and displaced 2.4 million. The fighting has destroyed much of the already limited infrastructure in one of the Arab world’s poorest countries.

Syria Headline:    Turkey-backed Syrian rebels ‘take Jarablus’- Operation ‘Euphrates Shield’

Syrian rebels, backed by the Turkish military and US air cover, say they have taken the town of Jarablus from jihadists of so-called Islamic State. The assault began at dawn when Turkish warplanes, tanks and special forces personnel crossed the nearby border. Rebel commanders said most of the IS militants subsequently retreated. Turkey says its intervention is targeting both IS fighters and a Syrian Kurdish-led alliance that is attempting to advance on Jarablus. US Vice-President Joe Biden later confirmed the US had been flying air cover for the operation. He also warned members of the Syrian Democratic Forces – the most effective opponents of IS on the ground in Syria – that they had to return to the east of the River Euphrates if they wanted to continue receiving its help. “We have made it absolutely clear… that they must go back across the river,” he said. “They cannot, will not, and under no circumstances get American support if they do not keep that commitment.”

Iraq Headline:      Iraq forces launch push to retake town

Iraqi special forces led an operation on Tuesday aimed at retaking the town of Qayyarah, a key staging base for operations to attack Mosul, military sources said. Qayyarah lies on the western bank of the Tigris river, about 60 km south of Mosul, the Daesh group’s last major urban stronghold in Iraq. With the clock ticking down on what Iraq expects to be its biggest anti-IS operation yet, the UN warned of population displacement on a scale not seen in years. “The operation started at dawn with the participation of Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) and army forces,” Brig. Gen. Firas Bashar said. US-led coalition aircraft provided support, said Bashar, the spokesman for the operations command in Nineveh, the province in which Qayyarah and Mosul are located. “The operation is ongoing and currently achieving its goals,” CTS spokesman Sabah Al-Noman said. “Qayyarah will be cleared and the operation wrapped up quickly, bolstering our plans… for the final battle to liberate Mosul,” he told AFP.

Headline:    Iranian General: Iran Formed Shi’ite Army to Destroy Israel by 2039

A retired Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) general, who is currently one of the Iranian commanders leading Shi’ite troops in Syria, said in an interview last week that Iran has formed a Shi’ite army that seeks to destroy Israel by 2039. Brig. Gen. Mohammad Ali Falaki, who is serving with the Afghan Fatemiyoun Division, said that the Afghan militia’s establishment facilitated “the formation of a Shia liberation army” that is commanded by Qassam Soleimani, the head of the IRGC’s elite Qods Force. The main goal of this army is eliminating Israel, according to Falaki. “Forming the first nucleus of the liberation army has the objective that, God willing, we will not have anything called Israel in 23 years,” he said. He boasted that Iranian-led troops are already stationed by Israel’s border. Falaki’s comments are the latest in a long series of Iranian threats issued against Israel, which haven’t tapered off since the Islamic Republic reached a nuclear agreement with world powers in July of last year.

A powerful explosion was heard near the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul on Wednesday evening, followed by sounds of heavy gunfire, sending panicked students at evening classes scrambling for safety on the highly guarded campus in the Afghan capital. At least five students were injured and were taken to a local emergency hospital, authorities said. It was not known whether any others were wounded, and there were no immediate reports of fatalities. The double assault came less than two weeks after two foreign professors at the elite American-run university were kidnapped from their vehicle outside the campus. The victims, one American and one Australian, have not been heard from since, and there has been no news about demands for ransom or other contact with the abductors. Police and government officials said security forces and emergency vehicles had been sent to the campus, located in an isolated section of the capital near the parliament. They said they were preparing to send in a special operations force to search for any attackers on campus. Meanwhile, A U.S. service member has died from wounds sustained today in an operation near Lashkar Gah in Helmand province in Afghanistan, the Pentagon confirmed. The service member was conducting “train, advise, assist” activities with Afghan counterparts when the patrol “triggered an improvised explosive device,” or IED, according to a news release from U.S. Forces Afghanistan.

Headline:        US deploys attack helicopters to strike Daesh in Libya

The United States has begun using attack helicopters to target the Daesh terror group in the extremists’ Libyan former stronghold of Sirte, a defence official said Tuesday. American jets have since the start of August been helping fighters loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) retake the coastal city of Sirte, conducting dozens of strikes on Daesh fighting positions and equipment. Lieutenant Commander Anthony Falvo, a spokesman for the US military’s Africa Command, said Marine Corps AH-1W SuperCobra attack helicopters had in recent days joined the operation. “The Cobras provide additional precision air strike capability,” Stuttgart-based Falvo told AFP in a phone interview. “It gives us a little bit more flexibility.” SuperCobra gunships are based on the USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship in the Mediterranean. Harrier jets are also being launched from the ship to conduct strikes on Sirte. As of Monday, the United States had conducted 77 air strikes in the city.

Headline:     Mozambique Opposition Attacks Health Facilities

At least 100,000 rural Mozambicans are paying the price for the nation’s stalled peace talks, after armed opposition fighters allegedly attacked and looted at least two health facilities in the past month, depriving patients of basic medical care and supplies. Human Rights Watch said Wednesday armed men linked to Mozambique’s main opposition party, Renamo, have stormed emergency rooms, threatened patients and staff and seized basic hospital supplies in the towns of Morrumbala and Mopeia in central Mozambique. The attackers’ take reportedly included bed sheets, mosquito nets, HIV tests, antibiotics, syringes, vaccines and essential supplies used to deliver babies. Renamo did not confirm or deny responsibility for these attacks, but the party’s leader recently ordered attacks across the country amid stalled peace talks with the ruling Frelimo party. The rights watchdog says it also received reports of other hospital and clinic attacks, but could not confirm those incidents.

Headline:   One killed, 29 wounded as 2 bombs strike southern Thailand

Two bombs exploded near a hotel in insurgency-wracked southern Thailand, killing one employee and wounding 29 people, police and hospital officials said Wednesday. The explosions occurred late Tuesday outside the Southern Hotel in Pattani, one of the biggest towns in a region where Muslim separatists have waged an insurgency since 2004 that has left more than 6,000 people dead. The first bomb exploded in the hotel’s car park, but caused no casualties, said police Lt. Sirisak Wungkulum. He said the second bomb planted in an Isuzu car went off 20 minutes later in front of the hotel, killing a 25-year-old woman who worked in the restaurant. Hospital officials said 29 people were wounded. It was the fourth car bombing this year in Thailand’s south, the only Muslim area in the Buddhist majority country.

Headline:         North Korea submarine fires ballistic missile

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile from a submarine off its east coast, say the US and South Korea. The KN-11 missile was launched from waters near Sinpo and flew about 500km (300 miles) before falling into the Sea of Japan, a US official said. Japan’s PM said it fell inside Japan’s Air Defence Identification Zone, calling it a “reckless act”. It comes as South Korea and the US begin annual military drills, which routinely anger Pyongyang. North Korea, which sees these drills as a rehearsal for invasion, recently warned they were pushing the Korean peninsula towards the brink of war and threatened a “pre-emptive nuclear strike” in retaliation. North Korea is banned by the UN from any use of ballistic or nuclear technology. But in recent months it has carried out repeated missile launches, and is believed to be close to conducting its fifth test of a nuclear device. Wednesday’s early morning launch appears to have been its most successful test yet of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

Headline:   Fed Admits Another $4 Trillion In QE Will Be Needed To Offset An “Economic Shock”

In a Fed Staff working paper released over the weekend titled “Gauging the Ability of the FOMC to Respond to Future Recessions” and penned by deputy director of the division of research and statistics at the Fed, the author concludes that “simulations of the FRB/US model of a severe recession suggest that large-scale asset purchases and forward guidance about the future path of the federal funds rate should be able to provide enough additional accommodation to fully compensate for a more limited [ability] to cut short-term interest rates in most, but probably not all, circumstances.” So far so good, however, there are some notable problems with the paper’s assumptions, as Citi head of G10 FX, Steven Englander, observes. He writes that the paper’s basic framework is to take the standard US economic model used by the Fed, give it a negative shock big enough to push the unemployment rate up by 5 percentage points (big but not unprecedented over the last 50 years) and deploying the Fed’s policy rate, QE and forward guidance tools to see if they are adequate to get the economy back on track. Negative rates and helicopter money are not used.

Headline:   Zika virus: Florida announces five new cases

Florida’s governor has announced five new cases of Zika, including one in the Tampa Bay area, 265 miles (425 km) north of Miami. Four other cases of the virus, which is often spread by mosquitoes, were found in Wynwood in Miami, where officials have sprayed pesticides. The Tampa case involves a woman in Pinellas County without a travel history, suggesting local transmission. The news brings the total number of the state’s local transmission cases to 42. The governor said officials have yet to declare Pinellas County as a zone of active transmission despite the new case in the area.

Headline:        W. Va. city swamped by overdoses, as nation battles surging opioid epidemic

The heroin epidemic that has plagued the nation’s urban and rural communities alike had not spared West Virginia, but nothing prepared Cabell County officials for 26 overdoses in a four-hour span last week. The wave of misery was focused in a Huntington public housing complex, where victims injected from a batch of the drug believed to have been laced with Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid up to 100 times more potent than morphine. Investigators believe two fatalities that occurred during the same time period could be related. “We have never seen anything like this before to this magnitude,” said Gordon Merry, Emergency Management Service director for Cabell County. It was the latest cluster of overdoses to take place in communities ranging from gritty cities to rural farmlands. Overdoses involving heroin and synthetic drugs like “spice” left two dozen hospitalized earlier this month in Ohio; killed two and sickened 16 two months ago in New Haven, Conn.; and hospitalized 33 last month in Brooklyn. Just last week, nine people overdosed on heroin from a single bad batch, with one woman dying. And twice in the last week, paramedics have rushed to Los Angeles’ Skid Row to treat multiple people sicked by synthetic marijuana. Incidents of large-scale overdoses bring headlines, but public health and law enforcement officials say the opioid crisis gripping the nation claims most of its victims quietly, one or two at a time. In Cabell County, there have been at least 440 overdoses this year, including 26 fatalities.

A powerful earthquake flattened mountain towns in central Italy on Wednesday, killing at least 73 people, burying some alive in their sleep under mounds of rubble, as exhausted volunteers and firefighters raced to free those still trapped. The quake struck in the early hours of the morning when most residents were asleep, razing homes and buckling roads in a cluster of communities some 140 km (85 miles) east of Rome. It was powerful enough to be felt in Bologna to the north and Naples to the south, each more than 220 km from the epicenter. The army was mobilized to help with special heavy equipment and the treasury released 235 million euros ($265 million) of emergency funds. At the Vatican, Pope Francis dispatched part of the Holy See’s tiny firefighting force to help in the rescue. Rescue workers used helicopters to pluck trapped survivors to safety in more isolated villages cut off by landslides and rubble. Aerial photographs showed whole areas of Amatrice (photo above), last year voted one of Italy’s most beautiful historic towns, flattened by the 6.2 magnitude quake. Many of those killed or missing were visitors.

Headline:   At least 3 reported dead after powerful earthquake strikes central Burma

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 rocked central Burma on Wednesday, damaging nearly 100 ancient Buddhist pagodas in the tourist city of Bagan and reportedly killing at least three people. The quake was centered about 15 miles west of Chauk, an area west of the ancient capital of Bagan, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The epicenter was located fairly far below the Earth’s surface at a depth of about 52 miles, it said. Deep earthquakes generally cause less surface damage. At least 94 brick pagodas in Bagan were damaged, the Ministry of Religious and Cultural Affairs said in a statement. Bagan, also known as Pagan, has more than 2,200 structures including pagodas and temples constructed from the 10th to the 14th centuries. Many are in disrepair while others have been restored in recent years, aided by the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO.

Two rocket alerts went off in communities near the Gaza border and in Sderot at around 2:25PM on Sunday. 2:35 PM Residents near the Gaza border are reporting that they heard at least one explosion, possibly two. 2:43 PM Confirmed reports that one rocket from Gaza landed in Sderot between 2 houses. No one was injured. The rocket was launched from Beit Hanoun. Police are asking citizens to not go to the area where the rocket fell do the the danger. 3:00 PM Arab sources report that the IDF is striking Beit Hanoun area.  There are no reports on why Iron Dome did not take down he rocket. Meanwhile, the IDF late Sunday night launched a wide series of air strikes against Hamas targets in an apparent turning up of the heat for a rocket launched from the Gaza Strip Sunday afternoon, which had exploded in the southern Israeli community of Sderot between two homes near the local train station. Earlier Sunday, the IDF took a limited counterstrike, hitting only two Hamas targets in the northern Gaza Strip – one with air power and one additional terror infrastructure site by tank fire.  Then, Monday evening the IDF  attacked a Syrian missile launch site connected with the Assad regime after a mortar fell on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights. The IDF said it views the Syrian regime as responsible for any attacks emanating from its territory and said it would not tolerate any violations of Israeli sovereignty or danger to Israeli citizens, even as it appeared that the shelling was a misfire from internal battles within Syria in its ongoing civil war.

Headline:    Hamas threatens to abuse Israeli hostages, renew fighting

The Hamas terror group threatened Thursday to maltreat Israeli hostages being held in the Strip, saying it would offer them the same conditions its own members are given in the Jewish state’s jails. Hamas is holding the remains of soldiers Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, who were killed in the 2014 Gaza war, as well as 29-year-old Avraham Mengistu and Juma Ibrahim Abu Anima, both of whom entered the Strip in 2014 and have not been heard from since. Speaking at a massive rally in Rafah in the southern Strip, Abu Obieda, spokesperson for Hamas’s military branch the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, accused Israel of “racist” and “repressive” measures for Hamas prisoners. Backed by a Saudi-led Arab coalition, Yemeni troops launched an offensive last week to break the rebel siege on Yemen’s flash-point third city, in the country’s southwest. The heaviest fighting Monday was near its western entrance where airstrikes by the Arab coalition and ground battles left 11 dead among Huthi rebels and their allies, loyalist military sources said. An air raid killed two more rebels at the northern entrance to Taiz, which has been encircled for more than year, the sources said. AFP could not confirm the toll from independent sources and the Iran-backed rebels rarely acknowledge their losses. “The blockade of Taiz is almost broken after the retaking of Jabal al-Dhabab mountain” by loyalist forces, Colonel Abdulaziz al-Majidi, a spokesman of pro-government forces in the area, told AFP. “The road is now open between the west of Taiz and southern provinces,” he said, adding however that he was referring to a “rugged” route and not the main road.

Two Egyptian policemen were killed and five other people wounded as gunmen opened fire on a police checkpoint north of Cairo on Sunday, officials said. The interior ministry, on its Facebook page, said three gunmen in a car without license plates fired at the checkpoint in Sadat City, an industrial zone 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the capital. The rebels, Turkey-backed groups fighting under the banner of the Free Syrian Army, are expected to assault Jarablus from inside Turkey in the next few days, said the rebel official, who is familiar with the plans but declined to be identified. “The factions are gathering in an area near the border (inside Turkey),” the rebel said. Turkey, an important supporter of the FSA groups, is worried that Kurds are using the SDF’s westwards expansion against IS to extend their influence across northern Syria. The SDF already holds the eastern bank of the Euphrates opposite Jarablus. On Saturday Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that Ankara would play a more active role in addressing the conflict in Syria in the coming six months to stop it being torn along ethnic lines.

Iraq Headline:    ISIS roadside bomb kills civilians fleeing Iraq town

Six Iraqi civilians were killed on Monday when a bomb planted by the ISIS group went off as they tried to flee the Hawijah area, security officials said. Thousands of people have been fleeing ISIS rule in Hawijah, which lies about 220 kilometres (140 miles) north of Baghdad, in recent weeks. “Six civilians were killed and five wounded by an IED (improvised explosive device),” a colonel in the Kurdish peshmerga forces told AFP. “It happened during an attempt by families to flee areas southeast of Kirkuk and reach peshmerga positions,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Among them were women and children,” he added. Other local officials confirmed the information. Much of the area is littered by bombs and booby traps rigged by ISIS to prevent movements by Iraqi security forces.

Kurdish Headline:        Kurds launch Hasaka assault to evict Syrian army

The Kurdish YPG militia launched a major assault on Monday to seize the last government-controlled parts of the northeastern Syrian city of Hasaka after calling on pro-government militias to surrender, Kurdish forces and residents said. They said Kurdish forces began the offensive after midnight to take the southeastern district of Nashwa, close to where a security compound is located near the governor’s office close to the heart of the city. The powerful YPG militia had earlier captured Ghwairan, the only major Arab neighborhood still in government hands. The fighting this week in Hasaka, which is divided into zones of Kurdish and Syrian government control, marks the most violent confrontation between the Kurdish YPG militia and Damascus in more than five years of civil war.

A suicide bomber as young as 12 killed at least 51 people at a wedding in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday, pointing the finger at the Islamic State group. Erdogan said Saturday’s blast in Gaziantep near the Syria border “was the result of a suicide bomber aged between 12 and 14 who either detonated (the bomb) or others detonated it.” The explosion was the latest attack to rock the key NATO member in a horrific year that has seen strikes blamed on Kurdish and Islamist militants as well as a bloody July 15 botched coup. The president said the Islamic State group was the “likely perpetrator” of the bomb attack, the deadliest in 2016, that targeted a celebration attended by many Kurds. The remains of a suicide vest were found at the scene, the chief prosecutor’s office said according to broadcaster CNN-Turk. Gulser Ates, one of scores wounded in the attack, told Hurriyet the attack took place as the party was breaking up in the mainly Kurdish neighbourhood.

Russia has approached Turkey to request use of the U.S.-built Incirlik air base. The NATO base, which is home to at least 50 U.S. B-61 nuclear warheads, is 65 miles from the Syrian border and would enable the Russian air force to engage in “constant bombing” of Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) and other anti-Assad forces, a Russian official said, according to a report by the UK’s Times newspaper. “It just remains to come to an agreement with (President Recep Tayyip) Erdogan that we get the NATO base Incirlik as [our] primary air base,” Sen. Igor Morozov, a member of the Russian upper house’s committee on international affairs, said. “You’ll see, the next base will be Incirlik,” he told Izvestia after the Kremlin revealed last week that its bombers had started flying out of Iran to launch attacks on Syria. “This will be one more victory for Putin.” Analysts say Turkey “has drifted towards Russia” in the wake of the failed coup on July 15. Erdogan has even suggested that the United States played a hand in the failed attempt to overthrow his government and is demanding the U.S. extradite cleric Fethullah Gulen, who has been alleged to have been the mastermind of the coup.

The lack of coordination between security forces is the main reason why Khanabad district fell to the Taliban, said soldiers fighting insurgents on the Kunduz frontline. According to them, they have been fighting Taliban for days – with no coordination among themselves. The Taliban took control of Khanabad early Saturday morning, however by Saturday evening security forces had retaken the district. TOLOnews’ Nematullah Ahmadi, the first journalist to access Khanabad after it was retaken by security forces has reported that soldiers had fought insurgents for days without any food. These soldiers have blasted government for not providing them with enough ammunition and food and have said the lack of coordination among the different security branches resulted in the fall of the district, and other parts of the province, to the Taliban. Security forces retook control of Khanabad district on Saturday – after nine hours of heavy fighting. According to security forces, insurgents have burned down army bases and government buildings in the district. Atiqullah, a soldier, said: “It has been three days of fighting for us – on empty stomachs. We do not have food and our supply route has been cut off by the Taliban.” Taliban have in the past few days closed off the Kabul-Badakhshan highway and have created their own check points, where they search passengers traveling to Mazar or Badakhshan, said soldiers. Despite having retaken control of Khanabad, the Afghan National Army is still embroiled in heavy clashes against the Taliban in Khanabad, Ali Abad and Qala-e-Zal districts.

The Islamic State is losing further control of the Libyan city of Sirte as pro-government, U.S.-backed militias said they captured the town’s main mosque and a prison. The Al-Bunyan Al-Marsoos militia group on Sunday said its forces advanced into two residential areas that held some of the last key hideouts of the Islamic State in Sirte. The militias’ offensive against the Islamic State in Sirte began in June, backed by U.S. airstrikes since Aug. 1 after weeks of stalemates. Positions captured on Sunday after morning airstrikes include the al-Ribatt mosque, the Sahara Bank and the former Internal Security Agency, which was used as a morality prison by the Islamic State, also identified as Daesh, ISIS and ISIL.

Sunni extremists are infiltrating the United States with the help of alien smugglers in South America and are crossing U.S. borders with ease, according to a U.S. South Command intelligence report. The Command’s J-2 intelligence directorate reported recently in internal channels that “special interest aliens” are working with a known alien smuggling network in Latin America to reach the United States. The smuggling network was not identified. Army Col. Lisa A. Garcia, a Southcom spokeswoman, did not address the intelligence report directly but said Sunni terrorist infiltration is a security concern. “Networks that specialize in smuggling individuals from regions of terrorist concern, mainly from the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, the Middle East, and East Africa, are indeed a concern for Southcom and other interagency security partners who support our country’s national security,” Garcia told the Washington Free Beacon. “There are major hubs that serve as entry points into the region for migrants from those areas of concern attempting to enter the U.S. along our border with Mexico,” she said.

More than 20 people were killed on Sunday when suicide bombers from the militant al Shabaab group detonated two car bombs at a local government headquarters in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region, witnesses and officials said. Residents of the town of Galkayo in north central Somalia said they heard two loud blasts in quick succession followed by heavy gunfire. “There were two huge bombs. The first one was a truck bomb, followed a minute or so (later) by another car bomb. My brother was injured at the scene,” Halima Ismail, a local resident, told Reuters. Islamist al Shabaab, which has carried out a series of deadly attacks in the Horn of Africa country as it seeks to topple the Western-backed government, claimed responsibility for the bombings. “There were two suicide car bombs,” Abdiasis Abu Musab, the group’s spokesman for military operations, told Reuters. Headline:  Boko Haram burns down village of Shawa, Nigeria

Members of the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram destroyed the Nigerian village of Shawa, injuring residents and burning buildings, witnesses said. An eyewitness and member of a youth vigilance group told the Nigerian newspaper The Punch that at least 20 heavily armed Boko Haram members arrived in Shawa on bicycles early Sunday morning, while residents were asleep, and shot at homes. The villagers fled into a nearby forest and watched as the invaders set fire to all the village’s structures before leaving. The village is near Chibok, where 267 girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram from a school in 2014. There were no deaths reported in Sunday’s attack, but many were reported injured, some critically, and the village remains deserted.

South Korea and the U.S. began the drills despite the threats. Headline:       No Scientific Evidence That People Are Born Gay or Transgender, Johns Hopkins Researchers Say

Distinguished scholars at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland released a new 143-page report on Monday that argues that there is not enough definitive scientific evidence available to suggest that gay, lesbian and transgender individuals are born with a certain sexual orientation or gender identity. In the three-part report published by The New Atlantis, Lawrence Mayer, a scholar-in-residence at Johns Hopkins University’s psychiatry department and a professor of statistics and biostatistics at Arizona State University, and Paul McHugh, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins, take on prevailing claims that sexual orientation and gender dysphoria are caused by natural traits. Additionally, the scholars challenge the claim that discrimination and social stigma is the sole reason why those with same-sex attractions or transgender identity suffer higher rates of mental health problems. In the first part, the report argues that there is insufficient evidence to claim that heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual attractions are an innate trait that people are born with. The report goes into detail about past epidemiological studies that have found a modest association between genetic factors and sexual orientation and behaviors. However, the report states that such studies have not been able to provide significant evidence “pointing to particular genes.” The report also looks at other other evidence of hypothesized biological causes, such as prenatal development and hormones but finds that evidence is also limited.

A strong typhoon packing heavy rain and wind has struck near Tokyo, grounding hundreds of domestic flights. Typhoon Mindulle made landfall at about 12:30pm local time (04:30 GMT) in Tateyama city, some 80km (50 miles) southeast of the capital. The storm packed gusts of up to 180 km/h (112 mph), and was headed north at a speed of 20 km/h, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Officials have warned of landslides and flooding. “In Tokyo… please exercise caution for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, surging rivers, violent wind and high waves,” said the weather agency. Mexico’s biggest and most feared volcano, Popocatépetl, has AGAIN roared into life with a major eruption of toxic smoke and ash caused by an earthquake – with fears it could lead to the ‘BIG ONE’. The increased seismic activity this weekend could mean it is bubbling up for a devastating “big one” eruption – the likes of which have not been seen since 2000 when 41,000 people had to evacuate. They followed a series of four other eruptions last Monday that were also triggered by two smaller earthquakes over a spate of 24 hours. Headline:     Synagogue ruins discovered in Israel CONFIRM Jesus story in New Testament is true

The startling discovery was made at a site called Tel Rechesh, near to Mount Tabor in the Nahal Tavor Nature Reserve in lower Galilee, in a synagogue that dates back to 79 AD – the year when the Romans attacked Jerusalem. The findings confirm that Jesus once preached sermons at the synagogue, according to Motti Aviam, a senior researcher at the Kinneret Institute for Galilean Archaeology at the Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee. He said: “This is the first synagogue discovered in the rural part of the Galilee and it confirms historical information we have about the New Testament, which says that Jesus preached at synagogues in Galilean villages.” Inscriptions found at the synagogue show that synagogues in the region were used for study of the Torah and meetings, rather than a place of worship, making it the perfect platform to Jesus to preach about his views on Judaism and how people should act.

Hamza bin Laden, Osama’s heir, calls on Muslims to overthrow the Saudi monarchy in a newly released audio message. The junior bin Laden’s speech was disseminated by As Sahab, al Qaeda’s propaganda arm, via social media websites on Aug. 17. The SITE Intelligence Group translated the audio, which is accompanied by various images. It is the first episode in a series titled, “Dominion of the Best of the Ummah in the Uprising of the People of the Sacred House.” Much of Hamza’s discussion focuses on the war in Yemen. He blasts the peace talks hosted by Kuwait, saying that after the “Saudi warlords proved their miserable failure on the battlefield, the politicians tried with American pressure to accomplish a victory in the political hallways and corridors in Kuwait.” The parties involved in Yemen’s multi-sided conflict have taken part in the negotiations this year. Hamza claims that the Saudis have therefore “betrayed the Muslims of Yemen twice,” by both failing to “deter the Houthis” and then refusing to “leave alone those who deter them and fight them.” For a variety of reasons, Hamza says, Saudi Arabia is a country “in dire need of change.” He describes Saudi royals and officials as “great criminal thieves” and “agents of the Americans.” According to SITE’s translation, Hamza argues a new government is needed “to free from the Crusaders the place where the Qur’an descended, to protect the Two Holy Mosques from the Safavids [Iranians], and to establish a new regime that governs with the sharia of Allah the Great and Almighty in full.” He also calls for a more equitable distribution of Saudi Arabia’s oil revenues (“vast riches”) and a government that “revives jihad” among the population.

Tons of explosives buried by the Nazis in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula are now in danger of being re-used as Islamic State and other jihadi groups are digging up the desert to uncover this massive cache, the NEWSWEEK reported. Reports confirmed that jihadists use the munitions as materials for making bombs, IEDs and other weapons. Up to 17 million landmines are estimated to be buried in an arid area in Egypt’s northwest around the battleground of Al-Alamein battle, which took place between the Axis powers and Allied forces in 1942. In 2004, a notorious jihadi group known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (which later pledged allegiance to ISIS), massacred 34 people in the resort city of Taba. The explosives used in the bloody attack were reportedly harvested from old mines.

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), backed by Hezbollah and Harakat Al-Nujaba (Iraqi paramilitary), launched a new attack in the southern Aleppo countryside on Thursday, targeting the Jaysh Al-Fateh (Army of Conquest) controlled village of Al-Qarassi. Launching their assault from the Huwayz axis, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies attempted to enter Al-Qarassi from its eastern flank; however, they have been unable to advance very far, due to Jaysh Al-Fateh’s anti-tank missiles. The first attack by the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies resulted in the destruction of a tank after it attempted to bypass Jaysh Al-Fateh’s defenses. In addition to their assault on Al-Qarassi, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies also conducted separate attacks at Tal Sanourabat and Al-‘Amariyah in Aleppo City. Syria Headline:    Islamic State bombs regime-held districts in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) bombed Wednesday regime-held districts in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province, causing casualties among civilians, activists and eyewitnesses reported. ISIS militants targeted the regime-held districts of al-Joura, Hawiqa and Sinaa with dozens of mortar shells. At least 12 civilians were injured in the attack. “Militants of the Islamic State started a new offensive on areas held by the Syrian regime in Deir ez-Zor. Since Wednesday afternoon the ISIS shelling on Hawiqa, al-Joura and Sinaa has not stopped,” local media activist Samir al-Khalaf told ARA News. The source reported that rescue teams continued their search for victims under the rubble.  “So far 12 civilians were injured, some of them are in critical conditions, while the local rescue teams continued their search for survivors under the ruins of the destroyed buildings. The number of casualties may rise in the coming hours,” a doctor in the Deir ez-Zor national hospital told ARA News.

Iraq Headline:  Daesh attack kills nine Iraqis near Jordan border

Fighters of the Daesh terror group attacked an Iraqi border guard base near Jordan on Tuesday, killing at least nine people before being beaten back, officers said. The early morning attack involved heavy mortar fire and saw clashes between extremist and border guards defending their position near Rutba, the last town on the desert road before the Trebil border crossing. “Elements from the Daesh gangs attacked the 2nd regiment of the border guard, which is located on the highway between Rutba and Trebil,” a colonel in the border guard said. “We clashed for several hours.” The Joint Operations Command which coordinates Iraq’s fight against Daesh said nine people were killed — eight members of the border guard and a civilian. The colonel said 17 border guards were also wounded in the attack, which occurred in the westernmost part of Anbar province, some 450 kilometres from Baghdad.

At least 12 people have been killed and 219 wounded in three bomb attacks in Turkey’s southeast. Blasts at police stations in Van and Elazig killed four police officers and two civilians, reports said. Five soldiers and a village guard died when their vehicle was targeted in Bitlis province. Turkish officials blamed the Kurdish militant group, the PKK, for the attacks, which took place outside Kurdish majority areas in the region. “Our fight against terror will never cease,” said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan are now operating in more territories than they were prior to the 2001 US campaign, a report by private intelligence agency Stratfor cautions. The paper also warns of the Taliban’s closer ties with Islamic State. Despite partial success by the Afghan military, their action is being “overshadowed by the Taliban’s much larger gains elsewhere,” Stratfor says in its latest assessment. The agency warns that the “Taliban now operates in more territories in Afghanistan than it has in 2001” when the US started its military campaign in the country to drive the group out. A major point of concern is Afghanistan’s largest province of Helmand, which is almost completely under the control of insurgents. “Despite heavy U.S. airstrikes in the area, the Taliban – who already control 80 percent of the region – have steadily encroached on the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah,” Stratfor warns. The group is now engaged in a large-scale offensive to seize the remaining territories in Helmand. Despite joint efforts by the Afghan army and US Air Force, insurgents continue to push forward in other provinces. On August 15 the Taliban seized a key district in northern Baghlan province, just 100 kilometers away from the country’s capital Kabul.

Daesh in Libya has carried out nine suicide bombings in one day in a failed bid to hold a central district of Sirte, pro-government forces said Wednesday. The United Nations says the Beni protest led to the deaths of a policeman, a demonstrator and a third person lynched by a mob, and that a soldier and several civilians were wounded.

In the first six months of this year, foreign central banks sold a net $192 billion of U.S. Treasury bonds, more than double the pace in the same period last year, when they sold $83 billion. China, Japan, France, Brazil and Colombia led the pack of countries dumping U.S. debt. New historical documents revealed over the weekend further refute the Palestinians’ attempts to rewrite history, especially pertaining to the Jewish claim to the Temple Mount. two historical documents — “A brief Guide to Al-Haram Al-Sharif,” issued in 1924 by Jerusalem Grand Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini’s Supreme Muslim Council, and an official Jordanian tourist map from 1956 — clearly identify only the familiar Al-Aqsa mosque compound as a Muslim site. The Supreme Muslim Council’s document states that “the site’s affiliation with Solomon’s Temple is undisputed.” The Jordanian map, which is in the possession of map collector Haim Steinberger, clearly indicates that at the time, Jordan recognized only the southern part of the compound, where Al-Aqsa mosque is, as Muslim territory. Both documents contradict recent claims by the Palestinians and the Waqf, the trust that controls and manages the current Islamic edifices on and around Al-Aqsa mosque, that the site is only holy to Muslims.

Clashes broke out at the Temple Mount compound on Sunday morning as Muslim rioted against Jews touring the area in commemoration of Tisha B’av, the Hebrew date on which both temples were destroyed, according to Jewish tradition. Earlier, thousands of Jewish mourners gathered throughout the night at the adjacent Western Wall plaza to cite lamentations. Over 400 Jews entered the Temple Mount compound during the standard visitation hours, but some 40 others were barred from entering the site after Muslim rioters clashed with police forces and attempted to attack the visitors. Palestinian sources reported that 15 people were wounded in the clashes, and the police said they had detained a man for impeding policemen in duty. A total of 19 Jews were removed from the site by police forces, and two more were arrested, for visibly mourning during the visit—crying, tearing their shirts, or reciting Jewish verses. Such behaviors are considered violations of visitation rules, which prohibit Jewish prayer at the contested holy site.

The US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Israel too have warned the octogenarian Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas against holding the Oct. 8 municipal elections he has called for the Palestinian-ruled West Bank towns and locales and the Gaza Strip. Abbas had hoped to catch the Islamist Hamas off guard at a time when it was in hot water in the Arab arena (although Abbas is in plenty of trouble himself) and the Gaza Strip under its rule was in desperate financial straits and domestic pressure.  Instead, Hamas turned the tables on him and announced that this time, unlike in 2012, when the fundamentalist Palestinian group opted out of the vote, it was more than ready to put up candidates to challenge local Fatah politicians for local office. More than a million people have already registered to vote. To convince the Palestinians that he means business and that campaigning should be serious, Abbas has embarked on what he calls his “Jerusalem gambit.” Knowing that Israeli will not let the Palestinian Authority place West Bank voting booths in East Jerusalem, which is home to 130,000 Palestinians, his plan is to declare elections for a Palestinian municipality for the eastern part of Israel’s capital in competition to the Israeli municipality. He has chosen the village of Abu Dis (Area B) as its seat and already installed there a “Palestinian governor of Jerusalem,” who is recognized by no one and known to very few. For Abbas, this maneuver presents another hazard. If he fails to get the vote out for the “Palestinian Jerusalem municipality”, he loses face. On the other hand, if Israel scotches this attempt to re-divide its capital, the Palestinian leader will have a convenient pretext for calling off the West Bank municipal vote and pinning the blame on Israel.

Lebanese state media say that a roadside bomb near the country’s eastern border with Syria has wounded two Lebanese soldiers. The National News Agency says the explosion struck an army vehicle in the Arsal region and that the wounds sustained by the troops were minor. The blast was followed by the soldiers opening fire with heavy weapons at militant positions nearby. Violence from neighboring Syria’s civil war has spilled across the border into Lebanon in the past. ISIS and al-Qaeda militants briefly seized the Lebanese border town of Arsal in 2014, before Lebanese security forces pushed them back to the frontier. The Lebanese army shares security responsibilities with the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group in the area.

Headline:   20 Killed When Airstrike Hits MSF Hospital in Northern Yemen

In Yemen, an airstrike has hit a hospital run by the French medical charity Doctors Without Borders. A Yemeni official says more than 20 people were killed in the strike which he said was carried out by the Saudi-led coalition.  Amateur video shown by pro-Houthi Yemeni media showed part of the rudimentary two-story Abs Hospital complex on fire and a number of bodies lying in the courtyard of the facility. Hilal Soufi, deputy governor of Hajjah province, said human remains were strewn around the facility. He said it was the only working hospital in the area and that it served four or five other adjacent regions. Doctors Without Borders indicated on its website that the airstrike took place Monday, noting that MSF has supported the Abs Hospital since July 2015. A witness told the Reuters news agency that it was difficult for medics to evacuate the wounded from the hospital since Saudi-coalition warplanes were still flying overhead. Saudi-coalition officials have not yet commented. Other Saudi-coalition airstrikes were reported in northern Yemen overnight.

ISIS claimed a suicide bombing on a bus in Syria near the Atmeh border crossing with Turkey late on Sunday that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said killed at least 32 people.
The bus was carrying fighters from foreign-backed rebel factions, local rebel sources said. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in an online statement on Sunday, saying the blast killed 50 fighters from the Failaq al-Sham and the Nour al-Din al-Zinki Movement groups. The statement said the rebels were from US-backed groups who were travelling to fight ISIS in northern Aleppo province.
Pictures circulating on social media showed the burnt-out remains of a bus and medics treating wounded people. Turkey’s CNN Turk television reported that the explosion occurred at the entrance to the Atmeh refugee camp in Syria, near the frontier crossing, citing local sources. The Observatory said it had received reports that two Turkish soldiers had been killed in the attack. Turkish officials were not immediately available for comment.

Kuridsh forces on Monday liberated a handful of villages in northern Iraq from Islamic State control and reached a key strategic bridge on the Gwer front as part of ongoing offensives against the militants. The military Pershmega said it retook three areas near Erbil on the Gwer front with the help of a U.S.-led coalition — and killed nearly three dozen Islamic State militants. The recaptured villages were Hasudiya, Kanhashai Bchuk and Kanhasai Gawra, officials said. The Gwer Bridge connects Nineveh, Erbil and Kirkuk. Kurdish rebels detonated a car bomb at a police station in southeast Turkey on Monday, killing two police officers and a young child, officials said. Some 25 other people were wounded. No group claimed responsibility for the bombing, but the Taliban have stepped up attacks across Afghanistan. Separately, authorities on Monday confirmed the Taliban have overrun a police headquarters in the Dahna-e-Ghori district in northern Baghlan province. There was no immediate word on casualties in Baghlan. The Taliban claimed they killed and captured “many” policemen. The Dahana-i-Ghori district in Baghlan province, about 100 miles north of Kabul, is under Taliban control, Mahmood Haqmal, a spokesman for the province, told Bloomberg News. on Monday. Multiple reports over the past week have indicated that the Islamic State continues to lose ground in Sirte, which is the so-called caliphate’s stronghold in Libya. In an attempt to counter these reports, Amaq News Agency posted the infographic seen above on Aug. 14. Amaq is part of the Islamic State’s propaganda machine. Amaq claims the jihadists still control four neighborhoods in Sirte, after killing more than 823 fighters belonging to the UN-backed Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) and shooting down two fighter jets. Amaq also alleges that special forces from four Western nations — the US, UK, France and Italy — are involved in the offensive against the Islamic State in the city. Citing official government statements and press reporting, The Long War Journal noted last week that all four of these countries are in fact operating inside Libya. The US is directly backing Al Bunyan Al Marsoos in Sirte and the Italian press says Italy’s special forces are as well. Of course, given that America’s Western allies are not keen to broadcast their involvement, it is not clear what specific roles, if any, they are playing in Sirte.

Police say one officer was taken to the hospital after being injured when a rock smashed through the windshield of his patrol car. Earlier on Sunday, the Wisconsin National Guard was activated. “Following a request from Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, and after discussions with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Adjutant General Donald Dunbar I have activated the Wisconsin National Guard to be in a position to aid local law enforcement upon request,” Gov. Cautious and prudent, Israeli policy over the last five years has largely succeeded in sealing off the Syrian civil war from Israel’s territory.
This has been achieved through the careful cultivation of a working relationship with rebel militias on the other side of the Golan Heights border, along with a readiness to act on occasion decisively to neutralize emergent dangers. The Assad regime and its allies control only a few points along the border. Most of it is held by rebel forces, described by IDF soldiers stationed at one of the border posts as a mix of Jabhat al-Nusra and other free army groups. The southern part of the border, however, is the area of greatest concern. This is held by the Khaled Ibn al-Walid Brigade, a franchise of Islamic State, formerly known as the Shuhada al-Yarmuk Brigades. The Israeli assumption is that, at a certain point, this organization will almost certainly turn its guns against Israel. In the meantime, the two sides watch each other closely. How will all this end? Will the division of Syria hold, making the militia arrangements across the border and the relationships created permanent? Perhaps. But in judging the likely future direction of events, it is necessary to widen the lens and observe events further north. One of the key battles of the Syrian civil war is under way in Aleppo province, far to the north. The regime sealed off rebel-controlled eastern Aleppo in early August. The rebels now appear to have broken the siege. But the outcome is not yet decided. If the regime succeeds in taking Aleppo city back in its entirety, this will mark a decisive setback for the rebellion. It will open the way for a regime campaign to retake the rural north. If this, too, succeeds, it will then be the turn of the southern border area. Such a turn of events is not inevitable, and may not unfold. But if it does, it will mean that the tense but stable arrangements that Israel has built up over the previous half-decade will come to an end. It is possible that the preparations on the border fence are in anticipation of this eventuality. Should it materialize, the virtual security zone established by Israel across the borderline will prove to have been just one of the transient, though fascinating, episodes of the Syrian civil war.

Syria Headline:  Syrian Army, Hezbollah launch surprise offensive to capture key town in Latakia

The Syrian Marines, backed by the Desert Hawks Brigade and Hezbollah, launched an imperative offensive on Friday to capture the key Latakia town of Kabbani near the Idlib border. The offensive was launched from two different axes, with the Syrian Marines and Desert Hawks striking Jaysh Al-Fateh’s (Army of Conquest) defenses at the Zuwayqat Mountains, while their allies from Hezbollah attacked from the small hilltops overlooking Kabbani from the west. Following a fierce battle at the Zuwayqat Mountains on Friday afternoon, the Syrian Armed Forces imposed full control over this site, killing several jihadist rebels in the process of their advance. With the Zuwayqat Mountains under their control, the Syrian Armed Forces are now in position to strike Kabbani from the southern perimeter; however, they have yet to attack the town today.

Perhaps the most notable development was reported today by Turkey’s Gunes newspaper, which said that as part of the discussion between Putin and Erdogan on Tuesday, the Turkish president suggested to abandon the US dollar in bilateral trade between Turkey and Russia, and instead to transact directly in lira and rubles. This would “benefit both Russia and Turkey”, Erdogan allegedly said in his August 9 meeting in St Petersburg, adding that this would relieve the lira from the USD’s upward pressure. The reason Erdogan is concerned about exchange rates is because recently Turkish inflation soared by nearly 8% Y/Y, and the recent devaluation of the TRY against the USD has only poured more oil on the fire. Needless to say, such a bilateral agreement would further infuriate Turkey’s European “friends”, permanently halting Turkish accession into the customs union, in accordance with Austria’s recent demands, and would in turn lead to a dissolution of the refugee agreement that is still keeping millions in refugees away from Europe in general and Germany, and Merkel’s plunging popularity ratings, in particular. Which, incidentally, means that not only Erdogan, but now also Putin, holds key leverage over the career of Europe’s most important politician.

Judicial Watch reported, via Free Republic: An ISIS operative arrested and criminally charged in Ohio this month has confirmed that the terrorist group has cells in Mexico, according to federal authorities. Judicial Watch has reported this for years, documenting it in a series of articles as part of an ongoing investigation on the connection between drug cartels, corruption and terrorism on the southern border. In fact, last spring Judicial Watch broke a story about an ISIS camp just a few miles from El Paso, Texas in an area known as “Anapra” situated just west of Ciudad Juárez in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Headline: Blast wounds 13 in Pakistani city on edge after big suicide attack

A roadside bomb hit a Pakistani security vehicle and wounded 13 people on Thursday in the southwestern city of Quetta, days after a suicide bombing at a hospital killed at least 74 people, most of them lawyers, officials and media said. The driver of the police pickup truck managed to drive the damaged vehicle to the Civil Hospital of Quetta — the same facility hit in Monday’s attack — to get the wounded to medical treatment. Vladimir Putin summoned his security council and the Russian Navy announced war games in the Black Sea a day after the Russian president accused Ukraine of trying to provoke a conflict over Crimea, which Moscow seized and annexed in 2014. The belligerent posture heightened worries in Ukraine that Russia may plan to ramp up fighting in a war between Kiev and pro-Russian eastern separatists that had been de-escalated by a shaky peace process. Using some of his most aggressive rhetoric against Kiev since the height of the war two years ago, Putin has pledged to take counter-measures against Ukraine, which he accused of sending saboteurs into Crimea to carry out terrorist acts. Ukraine has called the accusations false and says they look like a pretext for Russia to escalate hostilities. Such an escalation could be used by Putin to demand better terms in the Ukraine peace process, or to inflame nationalist passions at home ahead of Russian parliamentary elections next month. The Russian leader met his top military and intelligence service brass on Thursday and reviewed “scenarios for counter-terrorism security measures along the land border, offshore and in Crimean air space,” the Kremlin said.

Headline: Beijing Crosses Washington’s ‘Red Line’ in South China Sea

The Chinese military appears to be dramatically increasing its presence around a key island in the South China Sea, sending a strong message to Washington. As Beijing continues its land reclamation projects in the South China Sea, Washington has remained adamant about one island in particular: Scarborough Shoal. Located northeast of the Spratly archipelago, it is claimed by China, Taiwan, and the Philippines, and the US has maintained that any attempts to militarize the shoal would cross a “red line.” While China has maintained a small presence of two or three maritime security vessels around Scarborough Shoal, that number has escalated in the last few weeks. US officials familiar with intelligence reports tell the Washington Free Beacon that there are now over a dozen Chinese ships in the area. In addition to security vessels, Beijing will also permit hundreds of fishing vessels to harvest the rich waters around Scarborough Shoal. This tactic was similarly deployed in the East China Sea, where Beijing sought to legitimize its claim to the Senkakus, islands claimed by both China (where they are known as the Diaoyus) and Japan.

The United States has warned it will respond harshly if Israel demolishes the Palestinian village of Sussia in the southern Hebron Hills. Israeli and American officials, who asked not to be named, said Tuesday that over the past two weeks U.S. administration officials have informed officials in the Prime Minister’s Office and the Defense Ministry that a severe American reaction would result if Israel destroys the houses in the village. A Hezbollah drone struck militant posts in northern Syria Tuesday, party-run media said, in the first known report of the group using aircraft to strike enemy targets. Hezbollah’s War Media Center said in a tweet that a “resistance-operated aircraft accurately struck several militant targets in the town of Khalsa” in Aleppo’s southern countryside. A video posted by the Center to YouTube shows the drone hitting three targets: a command post, a pickup truck and a militant gathering position. In one scene, a camera attached to the drone shows two bombs being dropped from the aircraft over a target directly below it. The weapons do not appear to be guided. Headline:     Saudi Arabia Intercepts Ballistic Missiles Fired From Yemen

Saudi Arabia says its air force has intercepted two ballistic missiles fired from Yemen into the kingdom. A Saudi military statement says the missiles were fired on Wednesday morning toward the cities of Abha and Khamis Mushait, both of which are close to the kingdom’s southern border with Yemen. It says the missiles caused no damage. Yemen’s Shiite rebels known as Houthis are known to have a supply of Soviet-era Scud missiles, seized from the country’s military stockpiles. A Saudi-led coalition has been battling the rebels and their allies since March 2015 in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government. Peace talks to end the conflict collapsed last weekend and Saudi-led forces resumed heavy airstrikes in Yemen on Tuesday. The ballistic missiles likely were a Houthi response to those strikes.

Syria Headline:  Large Hezbollah convoy arrives in southern Aleppo

The jihadist-led Jaish al Fatah broke the siege of the rebel-held eastern Aleppo on Saturday following a week-long battle. The Iranian media outlet Fars News Agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported yesterday on the deployments of IRGC-backed Lebanese Hezbollah and Iraqi Harakat al Nujaba to the southern area of Aleppo. State media have also acknowledged the fatalities of two Iranians since Saturday, including a special forces officer. Lebanese Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Battalion entered the Hamdaniyeh area in western Aleppo to retake the Ramouseh area in the southwest, according to Fars. Ramouseh is the opposition’s access point to Aleppo. The Iranian outlet followed up with a report shortly afterwards quoting a Nujaba official that 2,000 of the militia’s highly trained forces have arrived in Aleppo. These forces have participated in “many operations liberating areas” of Aleppo province, according to Fars. Nujaba’s spokesman has said that it and Hezbollah “are the twins of resistance that can never be loosened or separated.” Both groups have acknowledged fatalities, including field commanders, during the latest battle for Aleppo.

Syria Headline:  ISIS takes civilians hostage in Syrian town

Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) is holding hundreds of civilians hostage in a Syrian town north of Aleppo province, where heavy fighting continued Tuesday between the group and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Omar al-Masri, a fighter with the Shams al-Shamal (Northern Sun) Battalions –a rebel group fighting alongside the US-backed SDF– said that their forces have liberated most of Manbij city north of Aleppo from ISIS militants. “ISIS only holds 3% of the city now, but the group has taken civilians as hostage,” Masri told ARA News in central Manbij. He said it’s difficult to attack the group’s final position in the city. “After securing the civilian people, we will take all of Manbij within hours,” he said.

Iraq Headline:  Iraqi Army crushes ISIS offensive to capture Syrian border-crossing

The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched an offensive on Monday to capture the Al-Walid border-crossing from the Iraqi Armed Forces after losing this site to the latter last week. ISIS began their offensive by attacking the Iraqi Army’s defenses from the Syrian province of Al-Sweida; this assault would last for nearly three hours on Monday. Following several infiltration attempts, the Islamic State ended their offensive at the Al-Walid border-crossing, leaving the Iraqi Army in full control of this strategic point near the Al-Anbar Governorate. In addition to this attack, the Islamic State also attacked the key desert village of Rutbah; however, this assault would also be foiled by the Iraqi Armed Forces.

Iraq Headline: Attacks outside Baghdad kill at least 10 people

Iraqi officials say separate attacks outside Baghdad have killed at least 10 people. Police say the deadliest attack Wednesday took place in the town of Latifiyah, where a suicide bomber struck an army checkpoint, killing four civilians and three soldiers. They added that 11 others were wounded. The town is located about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad. Police say three more civilians were killed and 12 wounded in a bomb explosion at an outdoor market in Baghdad’s southeast suburb of Nahrawan. Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures.

Afghan troops are being deployed to the capital of the key southern province of Helmand (red area on map) amid intense fighting with the Taliban in surrounding areas and fears the city could fall to the insurgents within days, officials said Wednesday. Fresh clashes have erupted in South Sudan between government forces and former rebels, a month after deadly violence which threatened a fragile peace accord, local authorities said Tuesday. The new fighting broke out between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and supporters of former vice-president Riek Machar near the town of Yei, more than 150 kilometers southwest of the capital Juba. It began two days ago in Mugwo, south of Yei on the Kaya Highway, a key road link for supplies en route to Uganda, a local official said. “There is insecurity on the road,” Stephen Ladu, information minister for Yei River state, told AFP. “Clashes started this morning in Kimba,” southwest of Yei along a road leading to the Democratic Republic of Congo, he added. In recent weeks, after the fighting in Juba, other clashes were reported between government forces and former rebels not far from the capital and in the northern town of Leer, although details have been scarce because of the security situation.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) shot down a fighter jet owned by Fajr Libya militia in the northern coastal city of Sirte, killing its pilot Gen. Mukhtar Fakrun. The terror group claimed responsibility for downing the L-39 aircraft via its official social media account Aamaq Agency. Fajr Libya militia has launched a wide-scale offensive dubbed “Bunyan Marsous” against ISIS positions in Sirte. The military operation is backed by US airstrikes as well. On Monday, July 8^th, US fighter jets conducted 12 airstrikes against the terror group in the coastal city, killing scores of jihadists and destroying several staging points and vehicles.

Headline:      U.S. deploys B-2 bombers to Guam amid North Korea provocations

The United States has deployed three B-2 stealth bombers to the U.S. territory of Guam as North Korea provocations continue to heighten tensions in the region. The U.S. Strategic Command said Tuesday the B-2 bombers were moved from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported. The deployment comes less than a week after North Korea fired two ballistic missiles. One took Japan by surprise when it landed in Tokyo’s exclusive economic zone. Japan recently ordered its Self-Defense Forces to intercept and destroy incoming flying objects. The command, issued on Monday, is to apply to all incoming projectiles.

Vietnam has discreetly fortified several of its islands in the disputed South China Sea with new mobile rocket launchers capable of striking China’s runways and military installations across the vital trade route, according to Western officials. Diplomats and military officers told Reuters that intelligence shows Hanoi has shipped the launchers from the Vietnamese mainland into position on five bases in the Spratly islands in recent months, a move likely to raise tensions with Beijing. The launchers have been hidden from aerial surveillance and they have yet to be armed, but could be made operational with rocket artillery rounds within two or three days, according to the three sources. Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry said the information was “inaccurate”, without elaborating. Deputy Defence Minister, Senior Lieutenant-General Nguyen Chi Vinh, told Reuters in Singapore in June that Hanoi had no such launchers or weapons ready in the Spratlys but reserved the right to take any such measures. “It is within our legitimate right to self-defense to move any of our weapons to any area at any time within our sovereign territory,” he said.

Headline:  World Vision: a Christian charity on an anti-Israel mission

We now know, due to recent revelations coming out of Israel, that World Vision has been funding the military wing of Hamas, known to most of the world as the Hamas terrorist organization, for decades. World Vision is a Christian charity on an anti-Israel mission. This can clearly be seen in its fraudulently biased website description of Israel and what they call the ‘West Bank’, properly known as Judea & Samaria. If the unemployment level of Jerusalem, ‘West Bank’ and Gaza is 46% and the poverty rate 36%, surely a large proportion of the blame must be directed at the corrupt and violent political overlords, namely the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. But not according to World Vision who point an accusing finger only against the Jewish state. They write that “children experience harassment and violence” from soldiers and “settlers”. The lack of adequate educational facilities is not due to Hamas using schools to store rockets or to aim them at Israeli civilians but, according to World Vision, it is due to demolitions. They do not mention which schools, if any, have been demolished by Israel.

Arrests and detention of employees of the Islamic trust have sparked mounting tensions on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, which is under its religious control, less than a week before the Jewish fast of Tisha B’Av, which marks the destruction of both Jewish temples in antiquity. Some 10 days ago Waqf employees attacked several Israeli archaeologists who were touring the Temple Mount, claiming that one of them was collecting olives that had fallen to the ground. Three of the attackers were arrested and are expected to be charged with assault. “One of the archaeologists in the group started to photograph [the Waqf attackers] and he was immediately set on by a Waqf man who hit him,” said Zachi Dvira, one of the archaeologists who had organized the tour. “As a result, [the archaeologist] said he was going to the nearby gate to call the police. When he started to walk there, four Waqf men jumped on him, threw him to the ground, beat him with their fists and kicked him. He managed to get out of there somehow.” These events follow a decision two months ago to block the Waqf from renovating a structure it owns on the mount, to turn it into restrooms. The structure was closed down by the police.

Headline:  Hundreds of African kings head to Israel for Tabernacles

In a move some believe has prophetic significance, hundreds of African kings, many of them with Jewish roots, are heading to Israel this October to observe the Feast of Tabernacles, or Sukkot. The effort is led by King Ayi of Togo, with an eye toward rediscovering the Jewish roots of many tribal people who believe they are part of the diaspora. They will observe the feast at the Western Wall, believed to be the only remaining retaining wall of the Second Temple Mount. The kings plan to sing out their love for Israel and strengthen their faith that the Messiah is coming soon. King Ayi was crowned in 1994 as King of the Ayigbe people of the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, and Benin. The seat of this Kingdom was in Togo, although most historians confirm it started in Accra, Ghana. He presently lives in exile in the U.S. In 2002, at the second World Conference of the Council of Chiefs and Kings of Africa, King Ayi was crowned by his peers as head of the Organization of Kings and Queens of Africa, in the republic of Benin. At the following conference in 2005, he announced his desire to bring all 350 African kings to Israel, to recite the “Shema,”, the Jewish declaration of faith, at the Kotel, or Western Wall in Jerusalem. His announcement was received with overwhelming enthusiasm, reports Breaking Israel News.

The strike hit Odhar village in the Nehm area, which has been at the center of renewed fighting between supporters of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s government and Iran-allied Houthi forces. U.N.-backed peace talks to end Yemen’s conflict broke down over the weekend, and pro-government forces said they had begun an offensive to retake Sanaa. Two residents of the Nehm area reached by telephone said four people returning from a market were killed when their vehicle was hit as it passed a grocery store. Five people in the store also died in the airstrike, they said.

Syria Headline: Daesh hits U.S.-backed Syrian rebel base near border

Daesh (ISIS) suicide bombers Sunday attacked a military base for U.S.-backed fighters near the Syrian-Iraqi border, leaving several dead before blowing themselves up, rebel sources and the militants said Sunday. They said the dawn attack on the heavily defended military camp near the Syrian Tanf border crossing with Iraq involved at least one explosive-laden vehicle that rammed the gate of the base which was set up by the fledgling, Pentagon-trained New Syria Army. Another rebel said the militants were not able to storm the heavily fortified camp where large sand barriers have been erected to prevent such incursions and attacks in an area where the militants operate with hit and run attacks. “It’s a well-defended camp and they tried to storm it but the suicide vehicle was targeted and hit,” said Said Seif al-Qalamoni, a rebel familiar with operating in the same area. He added that there were at least one dead and several wounded. Qalamoni said jets from the U.S.-led coalition against Daesh (ISIS) shortly after struck at several vehicles believed to be driven by the militants in the sparsely populated desert area.

Mr Erdogan also said the state would be cleansed of all supporters of the US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen. The cleric is blamed by the Turkish government for the attempted uprising. He denies any involvement. Religious figures and leaders of two of Turkey’s three opposition parties attended the rally. The Kurdish party was not invited.

The nuclear accord signed a year ago with Iran has become a hot US presidential campaign issue. On Thursday, Aug. 4, US President Barack Obama speaking at the Pentagon said the agreement “has worked exactly the way we said it would,” and even “Israeli defense officials are behind [it]… and now recognize the efficacy of the accord” and that the Iranians “no longer have the short term breakout capacity that would allow them to develop nuclear weapons.” Hillary Clinton declared at the Democratic Party convention which gave her the presidential nomination: “We put a lid on Iran’s nuclear program without firing a single shot.” Both these claims may be called hyperbolic at best and drew a response from Tel Aviv: “The Israeli defense establishment believes that agreements have value only if they are based on reality. They have no value if the facts on the ground are opposite to the ones the agreement is based on.” Documents reaching debkafile’s intelligence sources in recent weeks bare some facts contained in unpublished sections of the nuclear accord – Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPA) – that Iran signed in Vienna with the US, China, France, Russia, retain and Germany on July 14 2015. This data is at odds with the official version that accord delayed Iran’s short-term breakout capacity to a nuclear bomb by ten years plus one year. It is now demonstrated that if Tehran decides to violate the accord Iran retains the capability to achieve this goal in months – not years.

Headline:     Ethiopia protests: ‘Nearly 100 killed’ in Oromia and Amhara

Nearly 100 people were killed in the weekend’s protests in Ethiopia as demonstrators clashed with security forces in different parts of the country, Amnesty International says. The rights group says the most deadly incident happened in Bahir Dar, where at least 30 people died on Sunday. The authorities have said seven died in Bahir Dar and that security forces were reacting to violence from protesters. There has been an unprecedented wave of protests in Ethiopia in recent months.  People in the Oromo and Amhara regions have been complaining about political and economic marginalisation. Amnesty says that 67 people died when “security forces fired live bullets at peaceful protesters” in different towns and cities in the Oromo region over the weekend. There were clashes between security forces and protesters on Sunday in Bahir Dar, the Amhara regional capital. Opposition activists have given similar figures for the number of people killed.

A United nations peacekeeper was killed and four others wounded Sunday in northeastern Mali, when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb. A U.N. statement said the blast occurred in the Kidal region and that all of the victims were from Chad. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in a statement, stressed that attacks targeting U.N. peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.  He also said that attacks on regional peacekeepers “will not weaken the determination of the mission to fully implement its mandate” to monitor a peace deal reached after Islamists sought to seize control of northern Mali in 2012.

Headline:  Pakistan hospital bomb attack kills dozens in Quetta

A suicide bomb attack has killed at least 70 people at a hospital in Quetta in south-west Pakistan, officials say. About 120 others were injured in the blast, which happened at the entrance to the emergency department where the body of a prominent lawyer shot dead earlier on Monday was being brought. The casualties included lawyers and journalists accompanying the body of Bilal Anwar Kasi. A faction of the Pakistani Taliban has said it was behind the bombing. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar said it had also carried out the earlier attack on Mr Kasi, who was president of the Balochistan Bar Association and had been shot while on his way from his home to the main court complex in Quetta. Witnesses described scenes of chaos after the hospital blast, with “bodies everywhere” and survivors shouting for help through the smoke and dust. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and chief of army staff Gen Raheel Sharif have both gone to Quetta and will hold talks with security officials. Gen Sharif met some of those wounded at the Quetta Civil Hospital.

Japan ordered its military on Monday to be ready at any time to shoot down any North Korean missiles that threaten to strike Japan, putting its forces on a state of alert for at least three months, a defense ministry official and media said. Up to now, Japan has issued temporary orders when it had indications of an imminent North Korean missile launch that it has canceled after a projectile had been launched. However, because some test firings are hard to detect, it has decided to put its military on standby for a longer period. The order will be reviewed after three months, state broadcaster NHK said.

It has been reported that Russian tanks have been spotted moving into occupied territory in Crimea, which was seized following an operation carried out by Vladimir Putin’s forces in 2014. Witnesses have reported large amounts of Russian military hardware massing near the towns of Dzhankoy and Armyansk in northern Crimea, close to the border with Ukraine. Norman Dzhelalov, deputy chairman of Crimean Tatar Mejlis – which represents the peninsula’s ethnic Tatar group, claimed on Facebook that tanks had arrived. He wrote: “Witnesses report that large groups of Russian military hardware have been massed near Armyansk and Dzhankoy. “Dzhankoy has been cordoned off by troops with tanks and other equipment.” Video footage shows Russian armoured trucks and troop transporters as part of a large military convoy moving down the street. The footage uploaded to YouTube shows the vehicles moving through the city of Kerch near the Russian border. Russia also closed its checkpoints along the Crimean border with Ukraine on Sunday morning.

At least 21 people have died in floods that hit the Macedonian capital, Skopje, following torrential rain. The victims’ bodies were found on Sunday morning after the storm passed. Several people are still missing. Some of the victims drowned in their cars. Parts of the city’s ring road were swept away in the floods, dragging cars into nearby fields. Three-and-a-half inches (93mm) of rain fell in Skopje in the storm – more than the average for the whole of August. The water level reached as high as five feet (1.5 metres) in some of the affected areas, reports said.

Javier Duarte tweeted from his verified Twitter account that there were 11 deaths in his state “due to the hill’s mudslides in the mountainous areas of the state.” Before becoming a tropical storm as it moved across the region and then being downgraded to a tropical depression, the storm was Hurricane Earl.

Headline:  New underground concrete barrier to encircle Gaza, stop terror tunnels

An underground barrier to defend against Hamas attack tunnels is on the way following a call from the Defense Ministry for companies to bid to construct the new defensive line around the Gaza Strip. The closed tender has been submitted to 20 Israeli contracting companies. The first part of the defensive underground barrier will go along 10 kilometers of the Strip, with plans to extend the barrier around the entirety of the 60 kilometer border with Israel – thereby completely encircling Gaza. The concrete barriers will extend several stories underground and will include above ground sections as well. Besides being used as a physical barrier against terror tunnels which cross into Israel, the sophisticated barrier will also be able to detect tunnel digging close to it, something which will enable the IDF to destroy these terror tunnels before they pose a threat.

Headline:  Egypt’s Islamic State affiliate threatens Israel in new video

A video purportedly by Egypt’s Islamic State affiliate has delivered a threat to Israel, saying the Jewish state will soon “pay a high price.” The 35-minute video, posted on social media this week, also purports to show footage of alleged attacks by IS militants against Egyptian security forces in the Sinai Peninsula. It ends with footage depicting what is said to be the killing of two Egyptian policemen, each shot in the head. The video’s authenticity could not immediately be verified but its contents and production style mirrored previous IS propaganda material. According to a report in Bloomberg news last month, an unnamed former senior Israeli official said Israel has carried out drone strikes against jihadists in the peninsula. The airstrikes were conducted with Egypt’s knowledge and blessing, according to the ex-official, who spoke to the US-based news site on condition of anonymity. Israel Defense Forces officials believe that despite ideological differences, Hamas in Gaza is cooperating with extremists affiliated with Islamic State or other armed groups in Egypt’s neighboring Sinai region

Headline:  Black Lives Matter movement declares war on ‘Israeli Apartheid’

The radical “Black Lives Matter” movement released a formal platform on Monday, singling out Israel for what it calls the “genocide” against Palestinian Arabs and “Israeli Apartheid”. BLM, which emerged in the summer of 2013 following the acquittal of George Zimmerman, a Hispanic man who shot and killed an African American teenager in self-defense, aims to combat what it calls the “War on Black People”. The Black Lives Matter movement alleges that the United States actively targets and oppresses African Americans, while promoting “global imperialism” abroad. While the bulk of the BLM platform lambasts the United States for what it deems systemic racism, the document also singles out one foreign country for not only criticism, but specific policies. In fact, while there is scant reference to other countries in the document, Israel is mentioned 10 times, and “Palestine” 9 times. And while other countries are mentioned in passing, Israel is the only foreign country targeted by the platform. Israel is referred to as a “human rights violator” in the BLM platform, and indeed is the only country mentioned by name in that regard. After accusing Israel of “systematic discrimination” against Palestinian Arabs, apartheid-like policies, and even outright genocide, the platform calls for an end to US foreign aid to the Jewish state, which should instead be diverted to reparations for “victims” of “American war-making” like Iraq, and Libya, as well as African Americans descended from slaves in the American South.

Headline: Temple Institute announces school to train Levitical priests

The Temple Institute, dedicated to reestablishing the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and in keeping its memory alive, announced it is opening a school for training Levitical priests for their eventual service in a new temple. The institute ran several pilot programs in recent years and now “is embarking on a mission to teach Kohanim all the practical skills required to serve in the Third Holy Temple,” it said in a statement. The institute has opened an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to raise at least $75,000 for the project. The curriculum at the Nezer HaKodesh Institute for Kohanic Studies will include courses on the Temple service, theory and practice and the role and application of modern technology in the Third Temple, according to the Institute. “We are extremely excited to announce this new step towards the restoration of the Holy Temple service. We call first and foremost upon Kohanim worldwide to support this special project, which signifies a return to their birth right. We have chosen to use Indiegogo as a tool to enable as many people as possible to be a part of this historic initiative,” Rabbi Chaim Richman, international director of the Temple Institute, said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Abdallah al-Moallimi has said that nearly 500 Saudi citizens were killed following 1700 border attacks by Houthi militias. Moallimi noted the difference between the militias and Saudi-led coalition forces, who view all areas of Yemen as civilian populated areas. The envoy’s comments came during a Security Council meeting where it was announced that the Saudi-led Arab coalition was removed from a blacklist of those causing the deaths of hundreds of children in Yemen. The United Nations also requested to verify the information and sources and of their recent reports, noting that Saudi Arabia continues to provide aid for Yemeni refugees as well as the provision of humanitarian assistance in all parts of Yemen.

Headline: US Nuclear Airbase in Turkey at Risk

On Sunday, July 31, thousands of Turks mobbed the gates of the NATO airbase at Incirlik, threatening to seize the facility from the U.S. for allegedly supporting a failed military coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Earlier, the base was cut-off from electricity and plunged into blackout, allegedly according to some sources by orders of the Erdogan government.
Stored at Incirlik are as many as 90 B-61 tactical nuclear bombs, according to estimates by various press reports. This would comprise half of European NATO’s tactical nuclear deterrent. Some 180 U.S. B-61 nuclear bombs are stored in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Turkey for use by U.S. and NATO fighter-bombers. The U.S. should immediately remove all nuclear weapons from Turkey and relocate them in European NATO countries or bring them back to the United States. Why the Obama administration has not yet done so is a mystery.

An-Nahar reported Wednesday that Alaeddin Boroujerdi—the chairman of the Iranian parliament’s Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security—used his trip to Beirut as a “cover for informal talks” with Hezbollah and Palestinian groups. Ministerial sources told the Lebanese daily that one of Bourjerdi’s objectives was to “coordinate with Hezbollah” on the issue of Ghajar, which Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah warned last week was the subject to an Israeli “annexation attempt.” The Hezbollah chief on Friday called on the Lebanese government to “assume its responsibility preserving sovereignty on its land, especially in Ghajar.”

The alliance, the Shura Council of Benghazi Revolutionaries, said it had carried out the attack, according to a statement posted on media sites linked to the group. It claimed that 28 people were killed and as many as 70 wounded. It was the fourth vehicle bombing in the city in a week, though the toll from Tuesday’s blast was far higher than in previous attacks.

Police in Zimbabwe used tear gas and water cannon to disperse hundreds of anti-government protesters in the capital Harare Wednesday, amid soaring economic woes in the South African country. The violence erupted when a large crowd of protesters gathered outside the Finance Ministry building and started throwing stones at police and their vehicles. According to reports, many of the marchers wore the national flag around their necks. Several of the angry demonstrators held anti-government placards and chanted slogans against the economic policies of the administration of President Robert Mugabe. Douglas Munjere, 30, a graduate protester who is jobless years after completing university, said Zimbabwean youth need jobs for survival. “What we are saying is simple, we need jobs,” Munjere said, adding, “All these people should be at work but there are no jobs.” Zimbabwe has witnessed demonstrations for and against President Mugabe in recent months.

Headline: Kashmiris hold fresh protest after civilian killings

Protests have once again erupted in Indian-controlled Kashmir after two civilians were reportedly shot dead by government forces amid a curfew in the region. Police said thousands of people took to the streets in the Pampore area and a neighborhood in Srinagar, the region’s main city, on Wednesday, and chanted anti-India slogans. According to locals, government forces fired tear gas in Pampore after thousands of people attended funeral prayers for a young man killed overnight. The civilian was gunned down when police forces opened fire after being stopped at a roadblock set up by anti-India protesters late Tuesday. A young man accompanying him was critically wounded and later hospitalized in Srinagar, a police officer said on condition of anonymity. A private guard was also killed overnight at a bank in Srinagar with his family blaming paramilitary soldiers for his death.

Ninety people are undergoing hospital checks in remote northern Russia because of an anthrax outbreak that killed a boy on Monday. Eight people are confirmed as infected with anthrax, a rare but deadly bacterial disease. It is believed to have spread from reindeer. More than 2,300 reindeer have died in the outbreak, in the Yamalo-Nenets region of Siberia. Reindeer-herding families have been moved out. A heatwave has fuelled the disease. The fifteenth issue of the magazine, titled “Break the Cross,” is dedicated to convincing Christians that Jesus was a prophet of Allah, was never crucified, and that most of the New Testament is a perversion of Jesus’s story orchestrated by St. Paul, a “criminal” “treacherous Jew” who gave up massacring Christians in order to subvert the religion from the inside. Its articles strive to depict Christianity as a pagan religion based on a false Jesus, arguing that the only true Jesus is the prophet of Islam. The feigned compassion towards Christians in most of the volume stands in stark contrast to the actions of the Islamic State’s terrorists towards Christian communities, which includes rape, torture, crucifixion, and slavery. In the issue’s Foreward, the editors make clear the intent of the magazine: the issue will help “Crusaders” “read into why Muslims hate and fight them, why pagan Christians should break their crosses, why liberalist secularists should return to the fitrah (natural human disposition), and why skeptical atheists should recognize their Creator and submit to Him.”

Headline:  Tropical Storm Earl expected to become hurricane by landfall

Tropical Storm Earl is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before it makes landfall, probably in Belize, forecasters said Wednesday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said that Earl was threatening to bring heavy rains, flooding and high winds to Mexico, Belize and Honduras, and was likely to blow past Honduras’ Roatan Island, a popular tourist destination, on Wednesday afternoon. All three of those countries issued tropical storm warnings for some areas, and a hurricane warning was issued for part of Mexico. On Sunday, Earl was a weaker tropical wave but knocked down power lines and started a fire that killed six passengers on a bus in the Dominican Republic. Early Wednesday, the storm was centered about 120 miles (105 kilometers) east of Roatan, with maximum sustained winds near 65 mph (100 kph) and was moving west near 14 mph (22 kph).

Headline:  Volcanoes Blow in Mexico and Indonesia

Residents of Mexico City woke this morning to find ash coating cars and buildings after the Popocatepetl volcano belched out another toxic cloud. The volcano is considered one of the world’s most dangerous due to its proximity to the city with more than nine million inhabitants. Around 25 million people live within 62 miles of the crater of the 5,426-metre magma mount, who could also be affected. There are fears the peak is building towards a major disastrous eruption after activity increased over the past few years. Meanwhile, the Rinjani volcano, on Lombok Island, Indonesia, saw an explosive eruption at noon yesterday local time, sending a monster 10km-high ash plume into the sky. The eruption caused the closure of Lombok’s Praya Airport from 5pm and it was not expected to reopen until this morning.
