Headline: Three Border Police Officers Wounded in West Bank Car-ramming Attack

Three Border Police officers were wounded in a car-ramming attack on Sunday in the Hebron area, north of the settlement of Kiryat Arba. Soldiers opened fire at the car, but the driver fled the scene. Hours later he turned himself in to the police claiming it was an accident. He was arrested and transferred to Shin Bet custody for interrogation. “When we arrived at the scene we saw three young people… they were laying near a traffic circle,” a MDA paramedic said, adding that the three were conscious. The three, two men and a woman in their 20s, were given preliminary medical care on the scene. One of the police officers suffered severe wounds to his head and limbs, and was was taken to Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem for further treatment. The other two, who were lightly wounded, were evacuated to Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem.

Headline: Palestinians stab 80-year-old woman, others in latest attacks

Headline: Abbas orders military funerals for terrorists

A Palestinian stabbed and wounded a 70-year-old man in northern Israel before being shot by officers, police said Monday just hours after another Palestinian knifed several people, including an 80-year-old woman, in a stabbing spree near Tel Aviv, the latest attacks in more than a month of violence. The attacks came after Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian who they say tried to stab a soldier in the West Bank. A Palestinian stabbed and wounded a 70-year-old man, seriously wounding him as he walked down the street in the northern city of Netanya, police said Monday evening before he was shot and wounded by police. Earlier, Israeli police said a Palestinian stabbed an 80-year-old woman in the back on a street in Rishon Lezion near Tel Aviv Monday afternoon and then stabbed a man in the chest before continuing to run down the street and carrying out another attack. Police Spokeswoman Luba Samri said that after stabbing the first two people, the Palestinian, a 19-year-old from the West Bank city of Hebron, tried to enter a clothing shop but a woman in the store slammed a door on him. The Palestinian then went into a cosmetics store and stabbed another man. Bystanders managed to tackle and apprehend the attacker. Police then arrived on motorcycles and detained him. The Palestinian Authority has been holding official funeral parades in recent weeks in order to prevent militant groups like Hamas from using such ceremonies to whip up popular support, a senior Palestinian security official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the practice.

Headline: Hamas: The intifada has killed the Balfour Declaration

The Hamas paper has given new significance to the Israeli government’s concession Saturday, when it returned the bodies of five terrorists in breach of a Security Cabinet decision, and thereby let the Palestinian Authority (PA) hold a massive funeral for them in Hevron. Faiz Abu Shamalah wrote in the Hamas-run Palestine Paper, analyzing the meaning of the funeral that was attended by thousands, and which led to violent attacks on IDF soldiers. “The city of Hevron has become the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian nation expressing the will of the Palestinian nation, which spoke in its masses and with rage,” wrote Abu Shamalah. His comment indicates the strong support for Hamas in the city in Judea, a stronghold for the Islamist terrorist group and where local elections for seven spots in the municipal government reportedly saw all seven go to Hamas members. That “will” according to the Hamas writer was expressed in “a call against the Oslo Accords, against the continuation of the (PA) security cooperation (with Israel), against the initiative of (US Secretary of State) John Kerry and against every Palestinian working against the intifada.” “The city of Hevron announced aloud to the entire Palestinian nation that the goings-on on Palestinian land are an intifada in every sense of the word, in terms of the sacrifice and the self-sacrifice,” he continued. “The city of Hevron and with it all the Palestinian cities declared the Al-Quds intifada, and all the sharpened knives struck the Balfour Declaration and killed it even before attacking the view of security and stability that the Jews hope for on this land, and against them the city of Hevron went out in tens of thousands at the end of October, to declare in the voice of the blood: the Balfour Declaration that was published in early November a hundred years ago is a worthless declaration, and this land is Arab…and will not be a homeland for the Jews.”

Headline: Russia and Israeli warplanes play cat and mouse over Syria

Headline: Israel allegedly strikes missile base outside Damascus

Syrian media reported an Israeli air force attack Sunday, Nov. 1, after two sorties Friday night against Syrian army and Hizballah bases in the Qalamoun Mountains on the Lebanese border. The IDF declined to confirm or deny these reports. Syrian sources described a large number of Israeli airplanes as bombing a Hizballah unit based in the village of El Ain in northern Lebanon and the arms depot of the 155th Brigade of the Syrian army at Al-Katifa to the east. The two targets are 70 km apart. So these air strikes must have targeted two key points along the Iranian arms supply route to Hizballah. They also raise three important questions:

  1. Did Israel’s Tel Aviv command center use the hotline to Russian headquarters to give Moscow prior warning of air strikes against Syrian and Hizballah targets, explaining that no harm was intended to the Russian military in Syria? Hardly likely; the Russians would not be expected to tolerate Israeli bombardments so close to their own military enclave in Latakia province.

2.  Did Russian surveillance planes and stations detect the approach of Israel’s bombers and decide not to interfere? After all, Israel has turned a blind eye to repeated Russian air strikes in the last few days against rebel positions in the southern Syrian town of Deraa and Quneitra opposite IDF Golan positions. The two cases suggest a gentlemen’s agreement between Russia and Israel to abstain from interfering with each other’s air operations over Syria, so long as there are no direct clashes between the two air forces. This could easily have happened when Russian planes bombed Quneitra. So is Moscow giving Israel enough aerial leeway to strike Iranian, Syria and Hizballah targets so long as there is no interference in Russian operations? That too is unlikely because it would amount to permission for the Israeli air force to operate inside the anti-access/area denial bubble which the Russian air force has imposed over Syria.
3.  Did the Israeli air force use electronic warfare measures to jam the tracking systems installed in Russian spy planes and air defense missile systems in Syria? debkafile’s military sources have this answer: Israel and Russia have been conducting a clandestine electronic contest for 33 years, since the memorable episode in 1982, when the Israeli air force destroyed in a single strike the entire Russian air defense missile system installed in Syria.

Headline: Al-Qaida leader praises stabbing attacks in Israel, offers plan to ‘Liberate Palestine’

Al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri released a new audio message yesterday titled “To Unite for the Liberation of Jerusalem,” criticizing Israel’s “attacks against the al-Aksa Mosque” and calling for more attacks against Israel and the West. In the message, Zawahri said that “Muslims around the world have learned about the Jewish attacks on the Blessed al-Aksa Mosque.” He praised the stabbing attacks carried out by Palestinians against “the Jews,” especially those who plotted attacks knowing they would be killed. Yet rather than concentrating on attacks against Israel, the al-Qaida leader offered a more large-scale approach to “liberating Palestine.” “Two things are necessary for the liberation of Palestine,” claimed Zawahri.  “First is striking the West and especially the US on its own soil, and attacking their scattered interests in every place. The supporters of Israel must pay with their blood and economy. This will be their price for supporting Israel’s crimes against Muslims and Islam.” To this effect, Zahwari called for more attacks like September 11th and the bombings in Madrid and in London. The second important thing Zawahri called for in order to “liberate” Palestine is “the founding of an Islamic State in Egypt and the Levant, in order to mobilize the nation for the Liberation of Palestine. This could can only be done through the path of unity. We must reject the conflict and stop the fighting between the Jihadi fighters.”

A militant group affiliated to Islamic State in Egypt claimed responsibility for the downing of a Russian passenger plane that crashed in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula on Saturday, the group said in a statement circulated by supporters on Twitter. Egyptian security sources earlier on Saturday said early investigations suggested the plane crashed due to a technical fault. The claim of responsibility was also carried by the Aamaq website which acts as a semi official news agency for Islamic State.

Headline: For the first time ever, Egypt votes for Israel at the UN

Egypt votes in favor of Jewish state’s membership in United Nations space committee – triggering Arab anger. For the first time since Israel’s establishment in 1948, Egypt has voted in the Jewish state’s favor in the United Nations. The vote came during elections for membership in the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) late last week. The vote for Israel triggered angry criticism among Arab social media users, with some even creating a hashtag “Egypt votes for Israel” to criticize the vote. In the face of the backlash Egyptian officials scrambled to clarify that they had only voted for Israel in order to enable the election of several Arab states as well. “Egypt’s commitment to support the candidate of the Arab countries is the main motive behind the vote in favor of the resolution,” Egyptian Foreign Ministetry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid told The Cairo Post Saturday. According to The Post, Egypt and other Arab General Assembly members requested to vote for each of the six states on the list individually. That request was denied amid fierce opposition from the US delegation, and countries had to vote for the list in one go.

Syria Headline:      IS overruns town in central Syria: monitor

Islamic State group jihadists seized a small town in Syria’s central Homs province Sunday with help from local rebels and advanced on a majority Christian village, a monitoring group said. “The Islamic State group easily took control of the village of Maheen, southeast of Homs, after two suicide attacks,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. on Sunday the rebel factions turned against the government fighters and joined ranks with IS jihadists, Abdel Rahman said. IS launched its assault from the nearby Christian village of Al-Qaryatain, which it seized in August, he added. From Maheen, the jihadists pushed northeast toward the Christian-majority village of Sadad and the nearby highway running south from Homs to the Syrian capital. A military source said clashes broke out between regime forces and jihadists around Sadad and lasted two hours before subsiding as the Syrian troops pulled out of the village.

Syria Headline:    Joint Kurd-Arab force in Syria announces U.S.-backed offensive in al-Hasakah

A joint rebel force in Syria consisting of Sunni Arabs, Assyrians and Kurds announced it was launching an offensive to liberate portions of the country’s northeastern al-Hasakah province from Islamic State militants. The Syrian Democratic Forces announced its formation last month, asserting the need for the “establishment of a unified national military force to all Syrians consisting of Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians and all others living in the geographical locations of Syria.” The group has U.S. backing and comprises a series of units under the Syrian Arab Coalition, The Syriac Military Council and Kurdish forces known as the People’s Defense Units, or YPG, and the Women’s Defense Units, or YPJ. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Saturday quoted the SDF as announcing the “start of a campaign to liberate the southern countryside of al-Hasakah with the participation of all factions of Syrian Democratic Forces and the support of US-led coalition warplanes.” The group said it would not stop until the entire province was cleared of IS forces, and it referred to the offensive as “the first step of our military action within a plan of liberating the whole [of] Syria from the terrorist gangs.”

Palmyra

Syria Headline:    Activists say suspected Russian jets hit Syria’s Palmyra

Suspected Russian warplanes bombed the outskirts of Islamic State-held Palmyra on Monday, sending smoke rising out of an area that includes a historic castle overlooking the Syrian city’s Roman ruins, activists said. An activist in Palmyra who goes by the name Nasser al-Thaer said at least eight airstrikes struck the area of the Islamic-era castle, sending smoke and clouds of dust rising from the hill where the castle is located. An earlier round of airstrikes on Sunday hit behind the castle, al-Thaer told The Associated Press in a series of telephone messages. He said it was difficult to assess damage because of the ongoing airstrikes. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 10 suspected Russian airstrikes targeted the castle area in Palmyra, causing damage. The group, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria, did not provide further details. Activists also reported suspected Russian airstrikes on a nearby town, Qaryatain, which was seized by IS fighters in August. The Observatory said at least 10 people were killed in the central town. The Local Coordination Committees, another monitoring group, said at least 15 civilians were killed after the airstrikes hit a bread distribution center. There was no immediate comment from Russian officials. In comments to the Syrian state news agency SANA, a military official said the Russian Air Force, in cooperation with the Syrian Air Force, carried out 131 sorties which resulted in destroying 237 terrorist targets during the past 48 hours, including “destroying fortified bases, shelters, and a heavy machinegun sites used by (IS) in the surroundings of Palmyra.”

Iraq Headline:  Islamic State battles Iraqi forces near Samarra

The Islamic State and Iraqi Shiite militias have engaged in heavy fighting near the historic city of Samarra in central Iraq. Islamic State jihadists gained control of some areas west of Samarra after Iraqi forces withdrew, claimed a Shiite militia loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al Sadr. The Islamic State’s provinces, or wilayats, of Salahadin and Shamal Baghdad [North Baghdad] have put out large photo releases detailing the fighting for several Iraqi positions west of Samarra. The images show the jihadist forces attacking the positions with heavy machine guns, rockets, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades (RPG’s), technicals (heavily armed pick up trucks), and small arms. The Islamic State also displays several checkpoints being overrun, with the jihadist group removing Iraqi and Shiite flags from the compounds. Several photos show the dead bodies of dozens of Iraqi policemen and Shia militiamen. Many of these are too graphic to be published by The Long War Journal. Additional images highlight the “spoils” gained by the jihadist group, including small arms, RPGs, ammunition, and several vehicles. TheIslamic State also showcased its usage of several foreign suicide bombers, including jihadists from Tajikistan, Tunisia, Egypt, and Bahrain. The fighting in Samarra has been confirmed by Iraqi officials to have been concentrated west of the city. An Iraqi official from Salahadin said that “Daesh [a derogatory Arabic acronym for the Islamic State] was able to sneak into those areas.” Additionally, the official called on the Iraqi Security Forces to send reinforcements to the government’s elements in the area. The suicide bombings west of the city are said to have happened on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29, however, fighting is ongoing.

Kurdish Headline:  As Kurds advance against ISIS, Turkey intensifies ‘provocative attacks’ on Kurdish headquarters north Syria

Since the withdrawal of the Syrian regime’s forces from major parts of the Kurdish areas in July 2012, Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) have seized territories in northern Syrian to fill in the security vacuum.  Kurds have established three autonomous “cantons” in northern Syria since the civil war broke out in 2011- Tel Abyad (Gire Spi), connecting the YPG-held canton of al-Jazeera (Hasakah) with Kobane and the third Kurdish area of Afrin.. They deny aiming to establish their own “nation state”. On Sunday, the Turkish military targeted locations of the YPG in the western countryside of Tel Abyad, coinciding with the outbreak of clashes between the Kurdish YPG fighters and ISIS jihadists in the southern countryside of Sirrin town near Kobane. The YPG’s Media Centre released Monday a statement, of which ARA News received a copy, saying: “The Turkish attacks against our units which started on October 24 are still ongoing on the borderline of Kobane canton.” “The Turkish army renewed Monday afternoon heavy attacks on the YPG-held western countryside of Tel Abyad with A4 weapons,” the YPG’s leadership said. “On Sunday, the Turkish army targeted a YPG base west of Tel Abyad, using heavy weapons type A4, from 18:30 to 02:00 O’clock,” the YPG’s statement read, without giving further information. “It seems that the Turkish state is trying to provoke our units (YPG) to respond in a bid to justify its military intervention in our region,” a YPG official told ARA News in Tel Abyad. “The Turkish authorities are highly concerned about our continuous progress against ISIS terrorists, and they are trying to stop us under the pretext that we are merely fighting for the establishment of an autonomous Kurdish state on their border.”

Headline:Violence erupts in Kurdish areas following AKP electoral victory in Turkey

Turkey’s president says the world must respect the results of the election, which saw the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) regain its parliamentary majority. Recep Tayyip Erdogan said voters had chosen stability following unrest. With almost all ballots counted, state-run Anadolu news agency said the AKP had won 49.4% of the vote, with the main opposition CHP on 25.4%. European observers have criticised the government for stifling media freedom. The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said violence, especially in the country’s south-east, had also had a significant impact on the election. Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) went further and denounced the entire process as “unfair”. President Erdogan hailed the result early on Monday, saying: “The national will manifested itself on 1 November in favour of stability.” But he also attacked media criticism of him and called for global recognition of the election result. “Now a party with some 50% [of the vote] in Turkey has attained power… This should be respected by the whole world, but I have not seen such maturity.” Mr Erdogan called the second general election this year after his AKP lost its parliamentary majority for the first time in 13 years in June and attempts to form a coalition failed.

Headline: Iran says may quit Syria talks, in worsening spat with Saudi rival

Iran said on Monday it would quit Syria peace talks if it found them unconstructive, citing the “negative role” of Saudi Arabia, in the latest twist in a spat between the regional rivals that bodes ill for efforts to ease turmoil across the Middle East. Increasingly bad-tempered exchanges between the conservative Sunni-ruled kingdom and the revolutionary Shi’ite theocracy have dampened hopes of improved ties after the adversaries sat down for their first meeting to discuss the Syria war last week. “In the first round of talks, some countries, especially Saudi Arabia, played a negative and unconstructive role … Iran will not participate if the talks are not fruitful,” ISNA cited deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian as saying. Delivering unusually personal criticism, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani appeared to reprimand Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, who, on Saturday, lashed out at Tehran for what he termed its interference in regional countries. “An inexperienced young man in a regional country will not reach anywhere by rudeness in front of elders,” Rouhani was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA on Monday. He did not name the ‘young man’ but Jubeir was assumed to be his target.

Headline:   Libya warns it could flood Europe with migrants if EU does not recognise new Islamist government

Libya has issued a veiled threat to send “hundreds of thousands” of extra migrants to Europe if Brussels does not give official recognition to its self-declared Islamist government. Officials say they could hire boats to send large numbers of African migrants across the Mediterranean, massively adding to the numbers already reaching Europe’s borders. The warning was made by a spokesman for Libya’s General National Congress in an interview with The Telegraph in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. The Congress took control of Tripoli last year after fighting against forces loyal to the internationally- recognised House of Representatives government, and is not recognised by the European Union as Libya’s legitimate government. A fortnight ago, both factions also rejected the terms of a United Nations-brokered peace deal. Jamal Zubia, the Congress’s foreign media spokesman, told The Telegraph that Libya was currently spending tens of millions of pounds a year stopping migrants from crossing the Mediterranean, through the use of detention centres and repatriation programs. He said that if Europe continued to refuse to recognise the Congress’s authority, the Libyan government could reverse the policy. “To be honest, I have advised my goverment many times already that we should hire boats and send them to Europe,” he said. “We are protecting the gates of Europe, yet Europe does not recognise us and does not want to recognise us. So why should we stop the migrants here?”

Headline: Al Qaeda leader calls for unity against Russia in new recording

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri called on Islamic militants to band together to combat the West and Russia on battlegrounds in Syria and Iraq, in a new recording released Sunday. It appears to be his latest attempt to avoid being sidelined by ISIS, a US intelligence official tells Fox News. The new recording stands out because it makes current references to Russian intervention in Syria. Previous tapes from Zawahiri were recorded months in advance before being released. Fox News is told Zawahiri is seeking to capitalize off Russia’s intervention, given Al Qaeda’s historical roots fighting the Soviets. “The Americans, Russians, Iranians, Alawites, and Hezbollah are coordinating their war against us — are we not capable of stopping the fighting amongst ourselves so we can direct all our efforts against them?” Zawahiri said in the video, according to Reuters. The intelligence community is analyzing the recording, and it is not clear when the video was created. However, references to Russian aggression suggest the tape was recorded after Moscow launched its airstrike campaign in Syria on Sept. 30.

More than 218,000 refugees and other migrants crossed the Mediterranean in October — a record monthly tally this year and more than in the whole of last year, the UN refugee agency said Monday. The massive influx despite cooling weather and choppy waters highlights the strains that European policymakers and authorities have been under with the unprecedented flood of people fleeing countries including Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan through Turkey to Greece this year. The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that more than 600,000 people have now crossed the Mediterranean this year. UNHCR said 210,265 people crossed the sea from Turkey to Greece last month, a further 8,129 went from north Africa to Italy in the period to October 29. The agency estimates about 216,000 people crossed the Mediterranean last year, while some 3,000 crossed Turkey’s land border.

Headline: Al-Shabab attack kills 15 in Mogadishu hotel

Al-Shabab Islamist militants have attacked a hotel in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, killing at least 15 people. Gunmen used two car bombs to blast their way into the Sahafi hotel compound before storming the building, police said. Victims included at least one MP and the general who led the 2011 offensive that drove al-Shabab out of Mogadishu. African Union troops and government forces say they have regained control of the hotel after a fierce gun battle. The hotel is popular with Somalia’s members of parliament. A website associated with al-Shabab said it was responsible for the attack, which it said was carried out early in the morning to avoid civilian casualties. This is a clear change in strategy, says BBC World Service Africa editor Mary Harper. Until now, attacks in Mogadishu have been carried out during the day and evening, killing civilians who happen to be in the targeted area. The owner of the hotel and Gen Abdikarim Dhagabadan, who commanded the operation against al-Shabab in 2011, were among the victims. The attack comes a day after deadly clashes between jihadist fighters and African Union (AU) troops in the Bakool region near the border with Ethiopia.

Armed men in the capital of Central African Republic slit a man’s throat and set fire to scores of homes, in a cycle of violence that could further delay elections and prevent a visit this month by Pope Francis. Witnesses said hundreds of people fled their homes in Bangui on Monday after the weekend attack by men from the mainly Muslim PK-5 neighborhood in which more than a dozen people were also shot and wounded. It was not immediately clear who the targets and attackers were, but the violence is part of a pattern in which at least 90 people have been killed since late September – after a Muslim man was found killed. President Catherine Samba-Panza said U.N. peacekeepers had failed to halt the violence and called on the United Nations and the International Criminal Court to sanction political leaders behind the unrest. “Additional efforts must be made to boost the interventions of the international forces and negotiate the placement of advance bases in the neighborhoods to ensure security at a local level,” she said in a national address. She exhorted the peacekeepers to take vigorous action so that “Bangui can be secured for the coming events that are crucial for the country. The pope’s visit and the elections should be unifying events for the people of Central Africa.”

Headline: Nepali police kill Indian protester at border blockade

Police shot at ethnic protesters who attacked a police station with gasoline bomb and stones on Nepal’s southern border, killing an Indian man who was among the attackers, Nepalese officials said. Police official Raju Bahadur Shrestha said six officers at the police station were injured. “One of our officers was almost burnt to death, we managed to rescue him,” Shrestha said. Shrestha said the man killed was an Indian involved in the attack, identified as Ashish Kumar Ram. Earlier, Indian police official Rakesh Kumar had said the man was on his way to the Nepalese town of Birgunj. The attack happened about 300 meters (980 feet) inside Nepalese territory. People from Nepal and India are not required to have documents or visas to cross the border. Earlier Monday, Nepalese police were able to clear protesters from the border point, allowing more than 200 trucks and vehicles to cross over to India. However, hundreds of protesters were back at the bridge and completely blocked the border. Police official Hobindra Bogati said five protesters were detained when police removed them and the tents they had pitched in the no man’s land between the two countries. He said that 205 trucks and other vehicles had crossed from Birgunj to Raxaul, India. However, trucks bringing fuel and other goods to Nepal were still blocked by Indian customs officials.

Headline: $20 trillion man: National debt nearly doubles during Obama presidency

When President Obama signs into law the new two-year budget deal Monday, his action will bring into sharper focus a part of his legacy that he doesn’t like to talk about: He is the $20 trillion man. Mr. Obama’s spending agreement with Congress will suspend the nation’s debt limit and allow the Treasury to borrow another $1.5 trillion or so by the end of his presidency in 2017. Added to the current total national debt of more than $18.15 trillion, the red ink will likely be crowding the $20 trillion mark right around the time Mr. Obama leaves the White House. When Mr. Obama took over in January 2009, the total national debt stood at $10.6 trillion. That means the debt will have very nearly doubled during his eight years in office, and there is much more debt ahead with the abandonment of “sequestration” spending caps enacted in 2011.

Headline: Number of unemployed persons in Austria passes 400,000 mark

The number of unemployed persons in Austria crossed the 400,000 mark in October, increasing 0.6 percent to reach 8.7 percent or 410,854 people without work, the ministry of social affairs revealed in new figures on Monday. The total marks a 5.6-percent increase in the unemployment rate over October 2014, but still keeps Austria at the fifth-lowest unemployment rate within the European Union. By the Eurostat calculation method, the rate comes in at 5.7 percent. In line with an ongoing trend, foreigners were heavily impacted by the unemployment increase with 94,334 registered as being unemployed in October, an increase of 12,090 year-on-year. As well, for people aged 50 and over, unemployment increased 11,558 to 91,320 in total. The average length of time needed for unemployed persons to find work again also increased to 126 days, 19 days longer than was recorded in October 2014, while the number of long-term unemployed, persons who have been out of work for 12 months or longer, increased 29.8 percent.

Headline: 100,000 Christians fled ISIL onslaught on Mosul in one night

Given an ultimatum to convert to Islamic State of Iraq and Levant’s (ISIL’s) brutal brand of Islam or be executed, 100,000 Christians left their homes and belongings behind and fled the Iraqi city of Mosul in just one night. Father Douglas Bazi recounted how the Christians were desperate to escape ISIL’s “genocidal” campaign of ethnic cleansing. “Overnight 100,000 people escaped from Mosul and escaped from ISIL. When they arrived and took over Mosul they told the people we have three conditions according to Sharia,” Bazi told Express.co.uk. “Number one was convert. “The second was to pay Jizya (Islamic taxes) and they asked for each person to pay 4,000 to 8,000 US dollars. “Third, they said you have to leave or you will be beheaded.” Bazi also described how ISIL’s jihadists routinely torture anyone who speaks out against them and regularly use girl sex slaves to pay for basic services including medical care. ISIL forced anyone who remained in Mosul to pay an Islamist tax that amount to more than the yearly salary of the average Iraqi. Those who could not afford the tax were executed. “Before 2003 we were two million Christians in Iraq. Now we are maybe 180,000,” Bazi said. “At least 1,800 Christians have been killed since 2003 in Iraq. That’s why the people are afraid.”

Headline: Massive crack opens up in Wyoming mountain

A massive crack the size of seven football fields has formed in the foothills of a mountain range in northern Wyoming. The gaping gash in the Bighorn Mountains has been wowing locals for weeks as it continues to grow to over 750-yards long and about 50-yards wide, according to a hunting outfitter group. “This giant crack in the earth appeared in the last two weeks on a ranch we hunt in the Bighorn Mountains. It’s a really incredible sight,” SNS Outfitter & Guides wrote on Facebook. The group first stumbled across it in early October, but they believe the crack has been developing since late September. “All of a sudden it was just there,” SNS member Sy Gilliland told 9 News. “I think the reason it’s so fascinating is it’s so big. And it doesn’t make any sense. It’s just like the ground opened up.” The hunting organization called in an expert engineer to examine the geological phenomenon after the photo piqued many interests and prompted a barrage of questions. It said the crack was caused by a wet spring that “lubricated” across a cap rock.

Headline:    4.1-magnitude Arizona earthquake shakes metro Phoenix

A string of earthquakes north of Phoenix gave the Valley a rare jolt Sunday night, and the largest – a magnitude 4.1 just before 11:30 p.m. – rattled homes across the region. The series of at least three Arizona earthquakes generated no reports of notable damage, but left people swaying or stunned from Black Canyon City, closest to the epicenter, to Camp Verde and across metro Phoenix as far as Queen Creek. Michael Conway of the Arizona Geological Survey said Monday morning that scientists had not identified the causative fault line yet. Because the earthquake was small and did not rupture the ground, it will be hard to identify where it originated, Conway said. He also said there will be aftershocks over the next few days, many of them too small to feel.

Headline: Powerful cyclone kills three on Yemeni island, heads for Qaeda-run city

A rare tropical cyclone has hit the remote Yemeni island of Socotra, killing at least one person before heading towards the Yemeni mainland. Many residents took shelter in schools and caves as the storm, named Chapala, brought hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and powerful waves to the island. Photos and videos posted online showed water flowing through the streets of the provincial capital, Hadibu. It is believed to be the most powerful storm that Yemen has seen in decades. The UN’s World Meteorological Organisation described the cyclone as “extremely severe”, and said that sea conditions around the centre of the storm were “phenomenal”. At 12:00 GMT on Monday, the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) reported that Chapala was generating gusts of up to 240km/h (150mph), equivalent to a category 4 hurricane. The storm is forecast to make landfall just west of the city of Mukalla, on the south coast of the Yemeni mainland, between 00:00 GMT and 12:00 GMT on Tuesday, when gusts of up to 140 km/h (85mph) are expected.

Headline: New Zealand circulates UN draft resolution for new peace effort

The Netanyahu administration has told New Zealand not to try its reported attempt to resurrect the “peace process” through the United Nations Security Council. New Zealand now is a non-permanent member of the Security Council and reportedly is preparing a draft resolution for Israel and the Palestinian Authority to resume talks. Channel 2 television said that government security advisers called New Zealand’s ambassador to Israel, Jonathan Curr, for a meeting on Wednesday and told him to forget the idea. The draft resolution, according to Haaretz, includes a freeze on building new homes for Jews in Judea and Samaria as well as a ban on demolishing illegally-built Arab homes.

Headline: 24 Hours, 8 Terror Attacks as The Battle Moves To Judea And Samaria

A Palestinian stabbed and wounded a man at a station of Jerusalem’s light rail Friday before he was shot dead by police, security guards and civilians, police said. An Israeli man was wounded in the cross-fire. The man hurt in the stabbing was a U.S. citizen, according to Israeli media. The Jerusalem stabbing took place at a station of the city’s light rail — a frequent target of assailants in recent weeks. Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said a Palestinian man stabbed a man waiting at the station, seriously injuring him. As the assailant tried to stab another person, police, transport security guards and a civilian opened fire, seriously wounding him and hitting an Israeli civilian in the leg, she said. The Palestinian later died in hospital. In the West Bank, two Palestinians carrying knives ran toward an Israeli checkpoint, drawing fire from troops who killed one and critically wounded the other, according to police and a Palestinian medic. Friday’s incidents were the latest series of Palestinian attacks that began in mid-September and were accompanied by widespread unrest, including clashes between Palestinian stone-throwers and Israeli troops. Also Friday, Israeli forces imposed new restrictions on Palestinians in the Israeli-controlled center of Hebron, the largest Palestinian city in the West Bank, residents said. The military barred Palestinians between the ages of 15 and 25 from entering a major Hebron shrine that is revered by both Muslims and Jews, said senior Muslim cleric Munther Abu Felat. He said age restrictions were enforced only partially.

Headline: Palestinians: ICC must accelerate probe into ‘Israeli war crimes’

Palestinian officials on Friday urged the International Criminal Court to speed up its probe into accusations of “Israeli war crimes,” handing over a new dossier alleging summary killings and collective punishment. A delegation led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas asked ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda “to expedite” a preliminary inquiry, after the dossier was handed over earlier in the day documenting new alleged crimes in the past 40 days, PA Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki told reporters. Abbas arrived late Friday at the court for talks with Bensouda, accompanied by Malki, an AFP correspondent said. It was his first meeting with the prosecutor since the Palestinian Authority sparked controversy by joining the tribunal in January. The preliminary ICC probe aims to establish if there are grounds to open a full-scale investigation. It is unclear when it will be completed, but Malki said Friday he wants the court to finish quickly.

Headline:   Saudi Prince: “I’ll Side With Israel” Against Palestinian Uprising, Iran

Saudi Arabian prince and media mogul al-Waleed bin Talal has said that his state must consider forging a “defense pact” with Tel Aviv in order to stop Iran from getting involved in the unfolding Middle East crisis, according to Kuwaiti Al Qabas Daily. Prince al-Waleed was quoted as saying, “The whole Middle East dispute is tantamount to matter of life and death for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from my vantage point, and I know that Iranians seek to unseat the Saudi regime by playing the Palestinian card. Hence, to foil their plots, Saudi Arabia and Israel must bolster their relations and form a united front to stymie Tehran’s ambitious agenda.” The Saudi media tycoon asserted that Iran seeks to support Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime, thereby bolstering its own presence and influence in the region. He went on to say that in the case of another Palestinian uprising, he would stand with Israel for the sake of stopping Iran. “I will side with the Jewish nation and its democratic aspirations in case of outbreak of a Palestinian Intifada and I shall exert all my influence to break any ominous Arab initiatives set to condemn Tel Aviv, because I deem the Arab-Israeli entente and future friendship necessary to impede the Iranian dangerous encroachment,” he said, according to Al Qabas.

Syria Headline:   U.S. to Deploy Special Operations Forces in Syria: Officials

The U.S. will send a small number of U.S. special operations forces into Syria as part of a shift in its strategy against ISIS, White House officials announced Friday. President Barack Obama has authorized a contingent of less than 50 commandos to deploy into northern Syria and work with moderate opposition forces who are fighting the militants. While the White House has consistently said it would not put U.S. boots on the ground, spokesman Josh Earnest insisted that they will be there in a “train, advise and assist mission” — and not in a combat role. “It will not be their responsibility to lead the charge up the hill,” he said. But he acknowledged they will be in a perilous situation: “There is no denying the amount of risk they are taking on here.” Earnest called the additional forces an “expansion” but not a “change” in U.S. strategy against ISIS. He was unable to detail what the special operators will do, citing security concerns.

Syria Headline:     Eight points agreed at multinational Vienna conference on Syria

World powers involved in talks on Syria’s political future have agreed to a U.N.-led process that involves talks between the Syrian government and opposition and also to explore a ceasefire that would still allow strikes against terrorist groups. The plans were outlined in a Friday news conference held by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.N. Special Envoy Staffan De Mistura. It followed a seven-hour meeting, on Syria, that included diplomats from the 17 countries, plus the United Nations and European Union. Officials said the group agreed to meet again within two weeks. Kerry said under the U.N.-led plan, Syrian government representatives and opposition members would work to establish a political process that leads to “credible, inclusive” governance in Syria and then a new constitution and elections. Under the plan, the elections would be held under U.N.-supervision. Lavrov, speaking through a translator, said the political group should create the basis for an inclusive administration. In addition to Russia and Iran, the talks included Iran’s rival Saudi Arabia, a country more aligned with the U.S. position that President Assad must not be part of any long-term political resolution to Syria’s crisis. Notably absent from Friday’s talks on Syria’s political future were representatives from the Syrian government and the country’s moderate opposition groups.

Syria Headline: Assad kills 40 in Damascus bombing bonanza

Forty people were killed on Friday when rockets fired by Syrian government forces crashed into a market in a rebel-held area outside Damascus, a monitor said. “There were 40 people killed and at least 100 wounded in the center of Douma,” a town in the Eastern Ghouta suburb of the Syrian capital, Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told AFP. “There is still heavy fire now, with both rockets and mortars,” he said, adding that the toll was expected to rise as people were still being pulled out of damaged buildings. Rebel-held Douma lies in Eastern Ghouta, the largest opposition stronghold in Damascus province. The region is regularly targeted by rocket fire, shelling, and aerial raids by government forces, and opposition groups there also fire rockets into the capital. On Thursday, government air strikes in Douma hit a market and a hospital, killing at least nine people, according to the Observatory.

Syria Headline:  Iran’s elite units routed by ISIS in pre-battle for Aleppo

The battle for Al-Safira, 20 km. south of Aleppo – and the key to its capture – will go down in Iran’s Revolutionary history as the most humiliating defeat its elite forces have sustained in all its 36 years. This week, Iran sent into battle outside its borders 2,000 of its best-trained, loyal and well-equipped combat troops, detached from six elite Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) units. The battle at Al-Safira, fought with Russian air cover alongside Hizballah and Syrian army forces, was supposed to be the turning point in the Syrian civil war. Its objective was to break through Islamic State and Nusra Front defense lines around Al-Safira, and knock over the positions the Islamists had erected for blocking the roads from Aleppo and central Syria to Damascus, among them Route 5, the main highway. After that, they planned to advance on Aleppo. Their offensive had the opposite result. Fighters from ISIS and the Nusra Front stopped the Iranian and Syrian troops in their tracks and forced them to abandon the sections they held along the main transportation routes leading to Aleppo. So not only did the Iranian-led army fail to clear the way to this key city, but they were driven back by ISIS fighters, who took control of the 20-kilometer route from Al-Safira to Aleppo. The day ended with the jihadis in position to tighten the siege on both cities.

Syria Headline:  Syrian rebel groups declare Raqqa a ‘military zone’

Raqqa city in northern Syria – often dubbed Islamic State’s ‘capital’ – has been declared a military zone by a collection of opposition groups who have been planning to sweep IS out of the eastern Syrian city for months. A statement by Abu Issa – leader of the Raqqa Revolutionaries’ Brigade – was released on the brigade’s official YouTube account on Thursday. In the address, Abu Issa called on the people of Raqqa to help them in “rescuing” the city, while warning civilians to move away from IS positions. The commander also gave anyone helping IS five days to end associations with the group, or face possible reprisals. “We are bearing weapons to liberate you, and to protect you, and we promise to complete that mission,” Abu Issa, known only by his nom de guerre, said in the video. “We will soon announce the zero hour of a mission to free you from oppression. We know that you have waited a long time, as have all Syrians and the rest of the world. It will be a historic battle, first for Raqqa and then for all of Syria.” The Raqqa Revolutionaries’ Brigade, is believed to be stationed less than 50 kilometres from IS’s Syria stronghold.

Iraq Headline:  Iraqi Shi’ite militia claims attack on exiled Iranian opposition camp

A Shi’ite Muslim militia in Iraq claimed responsibility on Friday for a deadly rocket attack on an exiled Iranian opposition group housed near Baghdad, according to Iran’s Fars news agency. At least 15 rockets crashed in and around the camp of the People’s Mujahideen Organisation of Iran (PMOI) next to Baghdad International Airport on Thursday, killing 23 members, a Paris-based spokesman said. “We warned the members of this terrorist organization to leave Iraq as soon as possible … If they don’t do so, there will be more similar attacks,” al-Mukhtar Army commander Wathiq al-Battat was quoted as saying by Fars. Reuters could not independently verify the claim. Al-Mukhtar Army has said it receives funding from Tehran. Fars news agency is close to Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. Shahin Gobadi, the PMOI spokesman, accused “agents of the clerical (Iranian) regime inside the government of Iraq” of launching the attack and also placed responsibility on the Iraqi government and the United Nations. An Iraqi government spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

TurkeyTurkey

Headline: When the EU shuts up, Erdogan moves in

Almost a week after German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Istanbul, Turkish police together with judiciary seized one of the country’s largest media groups on the eve of the faithful elections on Sunday. Of course, the media group was one of the few remaining critical voices in today’s Turkey, where 60-70% of the press is already controlled by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his cronies. The editor-in-chief of Bugun TV, Tarık Toros, managed to continue to broadcast for another 5 hours by locking himself up in the control room. He was then thrown out of the building, which he had run for the last 8 years, by police force. Both Toros and Erhan Basyurt, the editor-in-chief of Bugun daily were immediately sacked by the new so-called ‘trustees’, all from AKP ranks despite the law dictating that they should be neutral. The two newspapers, after a one-day break, are on the shelves again on Friday (29 October) with Erdogan in their headlines. The TV channels are running documentaries on camels. Erdogan is a shrewd politician and master tactician. He calculates well and moves quickly when he deems the atmosphere is ripe. Being given red-carpet treatment in Brussels on 5 October to discuss how to stem the flow of refugees to Europe, Erdogan quickly realised that he was no more a pariah in Brussels. When Merkel, despite all the warnings from the German Bundestag, visited Istanbul two weeks before elections, Erdogan rightly thought that the EU would simply shut up regarding his domestic actions and that he could get concessions from Brussels before elections as long as he promised Turkey’s help to rein in refugees. Unfortunate as it is, he was right.

Headline: Iran to send ‘fleet of warships’ to the Atlantic Ocean

Iran intends to dispatch “a fleet of warships” to the Atlantic Ocean shortly, the semi-state Fars news agency reported Thursday, quoting the regime’s navy chief. “Our warships will soon berth at ports in the Atlantic Ocean,” Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari promised at a ceremony on Wednesday marking the return to port of Iranian warships that Fars said had taken part in joint drills with the Russian navy. Sayyari said the Iranian vessels had been in the Caspian Sea and at the Russian port of Astrakhan. “The presence of Iranian warships in international ports shows the Iranian Navy’s prowess,” Fars quoted him saying. Sayyari made a similar pledge to deploy warships in the Atlantic in early 2014. At the time, Iran promised to send its fleet close to American maritime borders as a counter to the US navy’s presence in the Gulf. But in April, the navy chief said the move had been canceled “due to a change in schedule.”

Headline:   Rebels abduct 12 UN contractors in South Sudan

Rebels in South Sudan have abducted 12 UN contractors operating a barge carrying fuel, weapons and equipment for international peacekeepers. UN spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said on Thursday that the incident happened in the town of Kaka, in the northeastern province of Upper Nile, AFP reported. Dujarric demanded that the “national contractors be released immediately, unharmed and unhurt,” adding that attacks against peacekeepers may constitute a war crime. Dujarric called on rebel leader, Riek Machar, to “take his responsibilities” and “uphold his commitment to the United Nations that all be returned safely.” In a similar incident on Monday, 100 heavily-armed rebels kidnapped 20 peacekeepers when they captured the barge traveling on the Nile, north of Malakal. The peacekeepers, however, were released on Thursday.

Headline: Warplanes bomb Libya’s Sirte, target ISIS

Unidentified warplanes carried out air strikes on Libya’s Sirte city, targeting areas controlled by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants in the south and west, a witness said on Thursday. The strikes were the second on ISIS in the city this month. Neither of Libya’s rival governments nor other warring factions immediately claimed responsibility. “We heard the warplanes around midnight, then there were massive explosions,” the witness said. There were no immediate official reports of any casualties. Libya is caught up in a conflict between two rival governments and their armed factions, leaving a security vacuum that has allowed ISIS militants to gain ground. They have secured a base in Sirte.

A Tunisian customs officer has died after setting himself on fire, officials said Thursday, in an apparent protest mirroring that of a graduate which sparked a popular revolt. The 54-year-old died in Monastir on Wednesday night after suffering “third-degree burns all over his body,” said Radhouane Harbi, head of the Fattouma Bourguiba hospital’s emergencies unit. Mongi Belkadhi, spokesman for civil protection, told AFP the man had on Tuesday sprayed his uniform with petrol and set himself alight outside a hotel in the touristic area of the eastern coastal city. A customs official told private television channel Nessma that the man had been on sick leave and had said he wanted to return to work. The government department that employed the man was not immediately available for comment. In December 2010, young university graduate Mohamed Bouazizi who eked out a living as a fruit seller set himself alight to protest police harassment and unemployment in the central town of Sidi Bouzid. His act, from which he died weeks later, ignited the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that later spread to several Arab capitals and brought down autocratic regimes.

Headline: Mali’s army says it kills five Islamists near Burkina border

Headline: Denmark to send special troops into Mali

Mali’s army has killed five Islamist fighters believed to have been behind a series of attacks along the border with Burkina Faso, a spokesman said on Thursday. Clashes erupted on Wednesday in the Tiebanda Forest, in central Mali’s Mopti region, and ended in the early evening, said Colonel Souleymane Maiga. A number of Islamist militants were also wounded, he said, while the army suffered no casualties. “These are elements that carried out several attacks in the region, notably against security posts. The army located them a while ago thanks to witness accounts from villagers,” he said. The West African nation is still struggling with the fallout from a 2012 Islamist occupation of its desert north. A French-led military intervention in 2013 routed the militants, but there are frequently attacks on Malian soldiers and United Nations peacekeepers. Unknown attackers fired seven mortar shells at a U.N. base in the northern region of Kidal on Wednesday, the peacekeeping mission MINUSMA said, adding there were no casualties or damage. Insecurity has spread south in recent months as home-grown Islamist fighters have stepped up raids, threatening a spillover of violence into Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.

Headline: Yemen’s Shiite Rebels Release 20 Detainees in Western Region

Yemen’s Shiite rebels on Friday released 20 detainees held in the western province of Ibb following pressure from local non-government groups, Yemeni security officials said. The 20, including several activists and journalists, were taken several weeks ago ahead of their planned march to the city of Taiz to protest its siege by the rebels known as Houthis, the officials said. Also in Ibb province, dozens of families fled the town of Damt where clashes Friday between Houthis and pro-government fighters killed five civilians, wounded 20 and destroyed five homes, security officials there said. The Houthis aim to secure Damt to pave the way for the well-defended southerners’ stronghold of Dhale province, a gateway to the government-controlled port city of Aden, the officials added. Meanwhile in Bayda province, ground fighting raged, killing at least 34 fighters on both sides, security officials said. Some of the bodies lay scattered on the ground, witnesses told The Associated Press. All officials who detailed the latest developments have remained neutral in the conflict that has splintered Yemen. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to reporters.

Headline:   Two killed, eight injured in explosions in eastern Ukraine

Nato allies are mulling the deployment of 4,000 troops to countries bordering Russia in a bid to deter the Kremlin from military adventurism against the bloc’s eastern most members, according to reports. The proposals are part of a wide-ranging debate within the alliance about the long-term response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and support for a separatist uprising in eastern Ukraine. Proposals being considered including deploying troops to Eastern Europe under direct Nato command in peacetime, in an unprecedented move that will likely be greeted with fury in Moscow, according to diplomats and military officials interviewed by the Wall Street Journal. One plan reportedly under consideration would see battalions of 800 to 1,000 troops deployed to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. A less extensive plan would see a single battalion deployed to the region.

The US Navy scrambled four fighter jets to intercept Russian warplanes earlier this week near a US aircraft carrier operating off the Korean peninsula, officials said Thursday. Two Russian planes flew close to the USS Ronald Reagan, prompting the mobilization of four F/A-18s, White House spokesman Josh Earnest revealed. He sought to downplay the incident in the Sea of Japan (East Sea), calling it ‘not a particularly threatening encounter.’ The two Russian Tu-142 Bear aircraft were flying about a mile from the carrier at an altitude of 500 feet (150 meters) on Tuesday, Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said. He said there was no evidence the Russian planes posed a direct threat. Tu-142 Bears are primarily reconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft. Still, the carrier scrambled four F/A-18 fighters to intercept and escort the Russian aircraft, he said. One of the ships accompanying the USS Ronald Reagan tried to hail the Russian aircraft by radio but did not receive a response, he added. ‘It’s standard operating procedure for US planes to escort any aircraft that are flying anywhere in the vicinity of US Navy ships,’ Davis said. ‘The interaction was characterized as safe.’

Headline: China naval chief says minor incident could spark war in South China Sea

China’s naval commander told his U.S. counterpart that a minor incident could spark war in the South China Sea if the United States did not stop its “provocative acts” in the disputed waterway, the Chinese navy said on Friday. Admiral Wu Shengli made the comments to U.S. chief of naval operations Admiral John Richardson during a video teleconference on Thursday, according to a Chinese naval statement. The two officers held talks after a U.S. warship sailed within 12 nautical miles of one of Beijing’s man-made islands in the contested Spratly archipelago on Tuesday. China has rebuked Washington over the patrol, the most significant U.S. challenge yet to territorial limits China effectively claims around its seven artificial islands in one of the world’s busiest sea lanes. “If the United States continues with these kinds of dangerous, provocative acts, there could well be a seriously pressing situation between frontline forces from both sides on the sea and in the air, or even a minor incident that sparks war,” the statement paraphrased Wu as saying.

When the Bremerton Knights take the field against Sequim on Thursday, a group of Satanists dressed in ceremonial robes will be watching from the stands. The members of The Satanic Temple of Seattle say they are coming to the game to advocate for religious equality, in light of the controversy sparked by Bremerton High School assistant football coach Joe Kennedy, who has threatened to sue the school district if he is not allowed to pray on the field after games. Bremerton School District spokeswoman Patty Glaser confirmed Wednesday the district has received a request from the Satanic Temple asking to be allowed access to the field after the game for a ceremony. The district is working on a statement in response, Glaser said. The Satanists aren’t coming uninvited. Two Bremerton High School students responded to a public offer made by the Temple this week to give an invocation at the game and asked the Satanists to attend. The two students had different motivations for contacting the Satanists, but both said they wanted to emphasize the need for equal religious opportunity at their school. They believe if the district allows prayer on the football field after games, people of all faiths should be allowed to participate.

Headline: Ethiopia heading for worst drought in decades

Ethiopia is facing its worst drought in decades, with more than eight million people already in need of food assistance as a result of weather conditions that are set to worsen, the aid agency Goal has warned. The failure of two consecutive rainy seasons, including the summer rain that normally feeds 80-85 per cent of the country but was exceptionally weak this year, has devastated livelihoods and greatly increased malnutrition rates in six Ethiopian regions. The United Nations has said the level of acute need has already exceeded levels seen in the Horn of Africa drought of 2011, which led to a famine that claimed an estimated 200,000 lives in neighbouring Somalia, and the drought is projected to become more severe next year. “The concern is that if there is not a timely response the situation will deteriorate,” said John Rynne, Goal’s director in Ethiopia. More than 80 per cent of Ethiopia’s population works in agriculture, leaving the country particularly vulnerable to drought and climate change. The current crisis is linked to the strength of this year’s El Niño, a water-warming weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, which has led to sharply reduced rainfall levels across densely populated swathes of the country.

She said one of the employees yelled “Tornado!,” and ran to the door to try keeping the wind from carrying it off. But a customer pulled the employee aside so that she wouldn’t be pulled away by the wind herself. “The door was flying open with her as she was trying to close it,” Veliz said. Those in the restaurant took shelter anywhere they could find it, including under tables, she said. “We were all caught off guard, everyone just grabbed on to what they could get their hands on,” she said. The winds ultimately ripped the door off the building and damaged windows, but no one inside was injured, Veliz said.

Headline: ‘Extremely severe’ cyclone heading for Yemen, Oman: UN

The U.N.’s weather agency warned Friday a “super cyclonic storm” was heading towards Oman and war-ravaged Yemen, where it could strike with hurricane force and dump torrential rain that may trigger landslides. Named Chapala, the storm is brewing in the Arabian Sea and is expected to make landfall in northern Yemen and the adjoining Oman coast around midnight Monday, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said. “Tropical cyclones are extremely rare over the Arabian peninsula,” WMO spokeswoman Clare Nullis told reporters, adding that the storm might well be the first of its kind to hit Yemen. It is set to hit at a time when Yemen remains wracked by a conflict that has claimed nearly 5,000 lives since March. “We hope the humanitarian impact (of Chapala) on Yemen will be limited,” Nullis said. The WMO described Chapala as “an extremely severe cyclonic storm.”

Headline: Abbas slams Netanyahu, seeks ‘protection’ for Palestinians

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday called for international protection for the Palestinians, saying the human rights situation under Israeli occupation is at its worst ever, and accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of exploiting the Holocaust to attack the Palestinians. The fiery speech by Abbas to a special session of the U.N.-backed Human Rights Council in Geneva threatened to stir up new tensions with Israel, just as U.S.-led efforts to calm the situation in the region are getting under way. Abbas criticized Netanyahu for comments a week earlier suggesting that a World War II-era Palestinian religious leader had persuaded the Nazis to carry out a policy that exterminated 6 million Jews. The remarks about Nazi sympathizer Haj Amin al-Husseini, a former grand mufti of Jerusalem, aimed to illustrate Netanyahu’s claim that Palestinian incitement at Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site goes back decades. Instead, it set off an uproar as Israeli historians accused him of bending historical facts for political gain. Abbas said the human rights situation in the Palestinian territories is at its “worst and most critical since 1948” — the year of Israel’s independence — and insisted “it is no longer useful to waste time in negotiations for the sake of negotiations. What is required is the end of the occupation in accordance with international legitimacy.” He called on the Security Council to “shoulder its responsibilities” and set up a “special regime of international protection for our Palestinian people.” He did not elaborate.

New Zealand is preparing a UN Security Council resolution calling on Israel to freeze construction and home demolitions in the West Bank, as well as urging the Palestinians to desist from taking steps against Israel at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, as part of a series of confidence-building steps ahead of a hoped-for resumption of peace talks. New Zealand, a non-permanent Security Council member for the last year, has planned to disseminate the draft resolution for some time, but relented following a request by the United States. In view of the escalation of tension around the Temple Mount, it has decided to renew its motion, handing it out last Friday to the other 14 Security Council members. Haaretz has obtained a copy. The draft asserts that the Security Council considers the continued stalled negotiations unacceptable, calling on both sides “to take the necessary measures to rebuild confidence and prepare for the resumption of negotiations.” The draft calls on the Quartet (United States, Russia, United Nations and European Union), Security Council members and Arab states that support the Arab peace initiative to assist the sides in preparing for renewed talks.

Headline: IDF prepares new war on terror in Judea

Following the stabbing of a woman outside a Rami Levy supermarket in Judea’s Gush Etzion, which caps off a rising terror wave, IDF and regional leaders in Gush Etzion held an appraisal of the situation on Wednesday night. The meeting was led by Etzion Division Commander Col. Roman Gufman, Gush Etzion regional council head David Perl, police representatives from the Hevron district, and additional representatives involved in the security of Gush Etzion Junction where the attack occurred. In the meeting it was decided to launch a bevy of new measures including a thickening of the security branch in the Gush Etzion Junction area, as well as establishing additional infrastructures to raise the security in the region. The regional head called on the government to step up the war against terror by launching an uncompromising attack on terrorists, because the terror “appears to be becoming more and more organized here in the region.” Perl said he spoke with local IDF commanders who “see things eye to eye” and understand that the situation cannot continue as it is. He said he was told by the military leaders that they hope to receive permission from above to take steps regarding separating Jews and Arabs and beefing the security presence in the area, and also “more significant fighting against terror.”

Jordan is calling for security camera footage from a Jerusalem shrine at the center of Israeli-Palestinian violence to be live streamed on the Internet. Muslim clerics and Israeli police are currently monitoring the images, but “the ultimate goal is for the footage to be seen on the Internet, by everyone,” A Jordanian official told the Associated Press. Secretary of State John Kerry announced over the weekend the agreement between Israel and Jordan to install security cameras at the hilltop compound. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed the plan, saying the cameras will prove that Israel is not doing anything wrong at the site. But Muslim religious officials said Monday Israeli police were blocking them from installing them. Israeli police had no immediate comment.

Syria Headline:    Report: Russia strikes Syrian rebel targets near Golan Heights for first time

The Russian air force hit rebel positions in southern Syria, near the Golan Heights, for the first time since it began its air campaign against anti-Assad forces last month, Iran’s Fars News Agency reported on Tuesday. According to Fars, Russian fighter jets hit rebel positions in the countryside of Syria’s Daara governate. The report added that the strikes targeted positions belonging to Islamic State and the Nusra Front, al-Qaida’s affiliate in Syria. Fars quoted political observers as saying that “the Russian fighter jets’ attacks have an important message for Israel while Tel Aviv is trying to pretend that it has reached an agreement with Moscow on Syria’s Southern skies.” A senior defense source said last month that the IDF and Russia set up a joint working group to coordinate their Syria-related activities in the aerial, naval, and electromagnetic arenas. The source spoke soon after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkot returned from a one-day visit to Moscow, following intensive meetings on Russia’s newly expanded military role in Syria.

Headline: Ashton Carter: U.S. to Begin ‘Direct Action on the Ground’ in Iraq, Syria

Headline: US, Russia edge close to military collaboration in Syria and Iraq

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Tuesday that the U.S. will begin “direct action on the ground” against ISIS forces in Iraq and Syria, aiming to intensify pressure on the militants as progress against them remains elusive. “We won’t hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL, or conducting such missions directly whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground,” Carter said in testimony before the Senate Armed Services committee, using an alternative name for the militant group. Carter pointed to last week’s rescue operation with Kurdish forces in northern Iraq to free hostages held by ISIS. Carter and Pentagon officials initially refused to characterize the rescue operation as U.S. boots on the ground. However, Carter said last week that the military expects “more raids of this kind” and that the rescue mission “represents a continuation of our advise and assist mission.” After months of denying that U.S. troops would be in any combat role in Iraq, Carter late last week in a response to a question posed by NBC News, also acknowledged that the situation U.S. soldiers found themselves in during the raid in Hawija was combat. “This is combat and things are complicated,” Carter said. During Tuesday’s Senate hearing, Carter said Wheeler “was killed in combat.”

Headline: Analysis: ISIS traversing region’s collapsing borders, flowing between Syria, Iraq, and Libya

Analysts have underestimated the importance of Libya’s role in aggravating political and military chaos in its Arab and African environs, according to an Israeli political science professor. According to Prof. Yehudit Ronen of the political science department at Bar-Ilan University, Libya is also affecting the European migrant crisis and Islamic State’s impact beyond Libya’s borders, such as to Sinai. “The Libyan conflict is spinning in two maelstroms of war: The deeply rifted internal Libyan political struggle and Islamic State’s military campaign to expand its ideological and political hegemony in the country,” said Ronen on Monday. Islamic State has formed hubs of activity in the pockets of instability that have been created because of weak state control over territories. And for this reason, Islamic State has not been a threat to Israel, which has the strongest security forces in the region. Islamic State is traversing the region’s collapsing borders and flowing between its various centers of operation – from Nigeria to Libya to Egypt, and Gaza. According to recent reports, Nigeria’s Boko Haram, which has waged a campaign to carve out an Islamist state in northern Nigeria and pledged loyalty to Islamic State, has used migratory routes to transfer jihadists and military equipment to Libya. Indicative of the group’s growing position in the region, late last year, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis jihadist organization renamed itself Sinai Province after pledging allegiance to Islamic State. “We are witnessing the deepening consolidation of Islamic State in Libya and it is becoming one of the main players in the Libyan conflict arena,” said Ronen.

Headline: ‘Strategic depopulation’ of Syria likely cause of EU refugee crisis – Assange

Headline: Austria in border disputes with Slovenia and Bavaria

Austrians are arming themselves at record rates in an effort to defend their households against feared attacks from Muslim invaders. Tens of thousands of Muslim “refugees” have poured into Austria from Hungary and Slovenia in recent months on their way to Germany and Sweden, two wealthy European countries that have laid out the welcome mat for migrants. More than a million will end up in Germany alone by the end of this year, according to estimates from the German government. A Czech TV report confirms that long guns – shotguns and rifles – have been flying off the shelves in Austria, and Austrians who haven’t already purchased a gun may not have a chance to get one for some time. They’re all sold out. And those arming themselves are primarily women. “If anyone wants to buy a long gun in Austria right now, too bad for them,” the Czech newscaster says. “All of them are currently sold out.” He cites the Austrian news outlet Trioler Tageszeitung as the source of his report. “We cannot complain about lack of demand,” Stephen Mayer, a gun merchant, told Trioler Tageszeitung.

Headline: Pressure mounts on Brazilian Congress to impeach president

Opposition activists handcuffed themselves to a pillar in Brazil’s Congress on Wednesday seeking the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff for mismanaging a once-booming economy and undermining confidence in the country. The small protest inside the foyer of the lower chamber highlighted the growing pressure on Brazilian politicians to begin impeachment proceedings against a president struggling to survive economic recession and a huge corruption scandal. “Impeachment can’t wait. Brazil cannot put up with more unemployment, recession, inflation, currency devaluation and lack of international confidence. We have to remove this president,” said the group’s leader, Carla Zambelli. Opinion polls have shown that two in every three Brazilians want to see Rousseff impeached, and her political opponents are stepping up their efforts to unseat the leftist leader one year into her second term. The demonstrators called on house speaker Eduardo Cunha to take up an impeachment request made by lawyers from opposition parties. Legal advisers in Congress said the petition was in order on Tuesday, giving Cunha a green light to proceed. But the speaker, who is himself fighting for his political survival after revelations of secret bank accounts reinforced corruption accusations against him, has said he is in no hurry to set impeachment proceedings in motion. The Rousseff government is counting on Cunha to hold off on an impeachment, presidential aides say, because he needs the votes of the ruling Workers’ Party to avoid being ousted by a house ethics committee that will start meeting next Tuesday.

Headline: Burundi violence leaves more than a dozen dead, U.N. worried

More than a dozen people were killed in clashes in Burundi on Monday and Tuesday, police said, in the latest violence linked to the disputed third term of President Pierre Nkurunziza that has sparked concern by the United Nations Security Council. Nkurunziza triggered weeks of protests and a failed coup when he announced in April he would seek a third term, plunging Burundi into its worst crisis since a civil war ended in 2005. He won the disputed vote in July but tensions have remained high, and at least 198 people have been killed since April. The U.N. Security Council on Wednesday expressed “deep concern about the growing insecurity and the continued rise in violence.” In a French-drafted statement, it strongly condemned human rights abuses and unlawful violence by security forces and militias and pledged to seek accountability for such acts. Activists and officials have reported a number of apparently targeted killings, while residents in opposition strongholds in the capital Bujumbura report frequent shootings and blasts. Late on Tuesday, police in the central province of Gitega clashed with a group of about 24 people, several of whom were armed, and killed seven people, Gitega governor Venant Manirambona said. There have been frequent clashes between security forces and citizens since April.

Headline: Saudi-led coalition drops weapons for allies in Yemen

Headline: Saudi-led military ops in Yemen ‘coming to close’: British FM

Warplanes from a Saudi-led coalition bombed the Iran-allied Houthi movement across Yemen on Wednesday and dropped weapons to Islamist militias battling the group, a day after being accused of bombing the hospital of an international medical aid charity. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab countries have been bombing the Houthis and their army allies loyal to ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh since late March. At least 5,600 people have been killed, but the alliance has made little headway in restoring Yemen’s exiled government to the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa. The coalition dropped weapons in the southwestern city of Taiz, Yemen’s third largest which has become a major front in the coalition’s northward push toward the capital. “Coalition forces supplied the resistance with a quantity of high-quality weapons which landed in the south of the city in an area under our control,” a senior militia leader told Reuters.

Headline: Tuberculosis now rivals AIDS as leading cause of death: WHO

For the first time, tuberculosis infections rivaled HIV/AIDS as a leading cause of death from infectious diseases, the World Health Organization said in a report released on Wednesday. It found that during 2014, 1.1 million people died of TB in 2014. During the same period, HIV/AIDS killed 1.2 million people globally, including 400,000 who were infected with both HIV and TB. Dr. Mario Raviglione, director of the WHO TB program, said the report reflects the dramatic gains in access to HIV/AIDS treatment in the past decade, which has helped many people survive their infections. But it also reflects disparities in funding for the two global killers. “The good news is that TB intervention has saved some 43 million lives since 2000,” but given that most cases of TB can be successfully treated, the death rate remained “unacceptably high,” Raviglione said in a telephone interview. The report features data from 205 countries and territories on all aspects of TB, including drug-resistant forms, research and development and financing. It found that 6 million new cases of TB were reported to the WHO in 2014, fewer than two-thirds of the 9.6 million people worldwide estimated to have fallen sick with TB last year. Among the estimated 480,000 cases of multi-drug resistant TB in 2014 – a superbug form of the disease that resists the two most potent anti-TB drugs -, only one in four was diagnosed.

Headline:    Record-Breaking 408 Earthquakes Hit Bay Area City Over Past 2 Weeks

A whopping 408 earthquakes have hit San Ramon, California, in the past two weeks, including 11 in one 24-hour stretch. This record-breaking earthquake swarm is nothing to fear, however, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Periods of tectonic unrest are common in the area and probably don’t presage a larger quake, the USGS said. Most of the quakes affecting this Bay Area city are tiny. The one that kicked off the swarm at 8:50 a.m. Pacific Time on Oct. 13 was a mere magnitude 0.8. People don’t usually feel earthquakes until they reach a magnitude of 2.5; quakes between magnitude 2.5 and 5.4 can be felt but rarely cause much damage. Most of the quakes occur at depths of 5 to 6 miles (8 to 9.7 kilometers).

Headline: UN Resolution Would Call on Israel to Freeze Settlements, Palestinians to Desist Action at ICC

Sisi emphasised the distinguished ties between both nations and their mutual commitment to preserving the interests of the Arab and the Islamic world. He also expressed appreciation for His Majesty’s support for Egypt under different circumstances, noting that this boosts the morale of the nation and its people.

The report added that the strikes targeted positions belonging to Islamic State and the Nusra Front, al-Qaida’s affiliate in Syria.Fars quoted political observers as saying that “the Russian fighter jets’ attacks have an important message for Israel while Tel Aviv is trying to pretend that it has reached an agreement with Moscow on Syria’s Southern skies.” A senior defense source said last month that the IDF and Russia set up a joint working group to coordinate their Syria-related activities in the aerial, naval, and electromagnetic arenas.

Islamic State is traversing the region’s collapsing borders and flowing between its various centers of operation – from Nigeria to Libya to Egypt, and Gaza.According to recent reports, Nigeria’s Boko Haram, which has waged a campaign to carve out an Islamist state in northern Nigeria and pledged loyalty to Islamic State, has used migratory routes to transfer jihadists and military equipment to Libya.

People don’t usually feelearthquakes until they reach a magnitude of 2.5; quakes between magnitude 2.5 and 5.4 can be felt but rarely cause much damage. Most of the quakes occur at depths of 5 to 6 miles (8 to 9.7 kilometers).

Headline: Kerry lays out steps to ease Israeli-Palestinian strife

The United States on Saturday proposed steps, including 24-hour video surveillance, to end weeks of violence over a Jerusalem site holy to Muslims and Jews. Speaking in Amman after meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan’s King Abdullah, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Israel had embraced “an excellent suggestion” by the king, who is the custodian of the site within Jerusalem’s walled Old City, for round-the-clock monitoring. Kerry said Israel had also given assurances it had no intention of changing the status quo at the al-Aqsa mosque compound that is the third holiest site in Islam. Muslims refer to the site as the Noble Sanctuary, or Haram al-Sharif, Jews call it Temple Mount. In a detailed statement, Netanyahu said Israel recognized “the importance of the Temple Mount to peoples of all three monotheistic faiths… and reaffirms its commitment to upholding unchanged the status quo of the Temple Mount, in word and in practice.” He echoed Kerry’s statement that Israel would enforce its long-standing policy under which Muslims may pray at the site but Jews, Christians and members of other faiths may only visit but not pray, and that Israel had no intention of dividing up the compound. Headline: Netanyahu denies Israel blocking Temple Mount cameras

Muslim religious officials in Jerusalem said Monday that Israeli police have blocked them from installing security cameras at the city’s most sensitive religious site, despite a new agreement to place the surveillance equipment there. Secretary of State John Kerry announced over the weekend an agreement between Israel and Jordan to install security cameras at the hilltop compound that has been at the center of weeks of unrest. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed the plan, saying the cameras will prove that Israel is not doing anything wrong at the site. But Azzam Khatib, director of the Islamic authority that oversees Muslim affairs at the site, said Monday that Israeli police prevented work crews from installing cameras at the entrance to the compound. Israeli police had no immediate comment.

Also Monday, the Israeli army said its forces shot a Palestinian who tried to stab an Israeli soldier in the West Bank city of Hebron, near that holy site. The army would not elaborate on the condition of the Palestinian. The soldier was unharmed. Military officials also said a Palestinian stabbed and severely wounded an Israeli soldier near Hebron’s Tomb of the Patriarchs before being shot and killed.  There have been almost daily Palestinian attacks, mostly stabbings, against Israeli civilians and security forces in recent weeks. Ten Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks, while 51 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, including 30 said by Israel to be attackers and the rest in clashes. ***SEE ALSO JORDAN BELOW October 26, 2015

Headline: Diaspora Jews Livid at PA Bid to Claim the Kotel at UNESCO

Diaspora Jewish groups have reacted with outrage to an Arab initiative in UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) to claim the Kotel (Western Wall) as a Muslim site. Israeli officials have already expressed their anger at the provocative proposal to “Islamize” yet another Jewish heritage site in Israel. The Israeli government is reportedly working hard behind the scenes to have the proposal shelved, while Israel’s Ambassador to UNESCO blasted the “Palestinian culture of lies.” In the US – where lawmakers have already urged the Ambassador to the UN to block the move – the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed alarm at the “cynical and incendiary” effort – spearheaded by PA leaders and six Arab members of the UNESCO Executive Board to pass a resolution, which would recognize the Kotel as part of the al-Aqsa Mosque, and a Muslim holy site. ADL urged the 58 members of the executive board to reject what it called a “blatant attempt to hijack UNESCO and exacerbate religious conflict in Jerusalem” and to “exercise responsible leadership to promote calm and religious respect at this tumultuous time.” October 26, 2015

Headline: US warns against PM’s idea of revoking residency for some Jerusalem Arabs

The Obama administration on Monday hurried to express its opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s tentative talk of revoking the permanent residency status of tens of thousands of Arabs living in East Jerusalem. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that, as far as the US government knows, Israel is not actively considering such a move. But if it were, he said, “it would obviously be of some concern to us.” The US, Earnest went on, reiterates the “importance of all sides avoiding provocative actions and rhetoric.” Netanyahu discussed the idea in vague terms at a Knesset committee meeting earlier Monday, as part of possible measures aimed at halting an ongoing spate of terror attacks. In his first appearance at the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Knesset winter sitting, Netanyahu said he was planning on touring East Jerusalem with other cabinet members to explore the issue further. An Israeli official later told AP that Netanyahu had ordered a review of the status of certain Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem that lie beyond the security barrier. The planned review comes amid weeks of Palestinian terror attacks on Israelis, many carried out by East Jerusalem residents. However, many of the attackers live in Arab neighborhoods such as Jabel Mukabar that are inside the barrier. Netanyahu first raised the idea of revoking Arab East Jerusalemites’ residency in a security cabinet meeting two weeks ago, according to a Sunday report from Channel 2 television news. Jordan’s King Abdullah II has stepped up to intervene in the groundswell of Arab terror aimed at Jews that if not halted, could become a tsunami to drown Arab-Israeli relations for decades. In a response to a statement made by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the weekend, the Hashemite monarch “welcomed” the initiative and said he believed it would help end the violence. “I heard the statements made by Prime Minister Netanyahu and his affirmation of his commitment to uphold the status quo. Headline:   One dead in suicide attack at Saudi mosque: ministry

A suicide bomber blew himself up at a Shi’te mosque in Najran in southern Saudi Arabia on Monday, killing at least one person and wounding several others, the Saudi interior ministry said. The ministry’s first official word on the attack, carried by the official SPA news agency and Al Arabiya television, followed earlier media reports that three people had died in the blast. The attack on the al-Mashhad mosque, attended by followers of the Ismaili Shi’te branch of Islam, occurred during evening prayers, an interior ministry spokesperson told Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya. “As the Magreb prayer ended and the worshippers came out of the main door, a man entered the mosque and blew himself up,” Mohammed al-Askar, a doctor from Najran told Reuters, adding that it was the first time a Shi’ite Ismaili mosque had been targeted. A new Free Syrian Army coalition has been formed in southern Syria, where the FSA-affiliated Southern Front as well as Islamist rebels have been battling the regime. “The new military formation raises the FSA flag and [shares] its goals of toppling the regime and confronting the Russian occupation as well as all forms of terrorism,” the pro-rebel Baladi News announced Monday morning, days after two dozen factions formed the coalition. In a video statement on October 23, representatives of the FSA-affiliated fighting groups said they had created Jaysh al-Janoub (The Army of the South), which will operate in the Damascus, Rif Dimashq, Quneitra, Daraa and Suweida provinces. “The crisis… has transformed from combatting the dictator to combatting several states, the latest but not the last of which is the brutal Russian enemy, which has encroached upon our skies and killed our children, the elderly and our women,” the Army of the South announced in its opening statement. The representatives of the new alliance also expressed their conviction that “the regime will not fall unless the capital Damascus is liberated.” The speaker in the video also said that a military command had been formed under an internal political bureau and that a man identified as Mohammad al-Hariri had been elected as its representative inside Syria. The group was able to seiz several key positions near the town of al-Sufeira in Aleppo’s east. ISIS has also seized control of regime’s military bases in the village of Tel Aran in the eastern countryside of Aleppo after fierce clashes. Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, media activist Wael Mohammed confirmed that ISIS militants were able to seize three buildings taken by the regime forces as military bases in the village of Tel Aran after fierce battles between the two sides in the outskirts of the village. This was coupled with some four ISIS-led car bombs on the outskirts of Tel Aran and near the town of al-Sufeira, causing the death of dozens of pro-regime troops. “Daesh (ISIS) militants have also destroyed two machine guns (14.5 caliber) belonging to the regime’s forces in the area,” Mohamed told ARA News. Over the past few days, pro-regime forces have repeatedly attacked ISIS’s communities in Aleppo’s eastern areas in an attempt to lift the siege imposed on the beleaguered fighters inside the Kweiris military airport. However, ISIS was able to make new gains in the province. October 26, 2015

Iraq Headline: Bomb attack on Shi’ite pilgrims in Baghdad kills seven: sources

A suicide bomb claimed by Islamic State killed at least seven people, including two police, when it exploded on Monday near a Shi’ite Muslim procession in a northern Baghdad neighborhood, police and medical sources said. The explosion in Shaab, which the sources said left 23 wounded, was one of a relatively small number of attacks reported in Iraq over the weekend as Shi’ites across the Muslim world marked the holy day of Ashura. The annual ritual, which commemorates the slaying of Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Hussein in AD 680, has become a flashpoint for attacks over the last decade. Islamic State, the militant group that seized swathes of northern and western Iraq last year, claimed responsibility for the blast in a statement distributed online by supporters. The group said the target was “rejectionists” – a derogatory term it uses to refer to Shi’ite Muslims. It said 20 people were killed and 40 wounded. Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the statement. October 26, 2015

Tal al Abyad

Kurdish Headline: Syrian Kurds claim Turkish army attacks border positions

Kurdish fighters in northern Syria have accused the Turkish military of attacking their positions near a border town at the weekend. There was no immediate confirmation from Turkey, where an official said the government was investigating the claims. “The Turkish army targeted yesterday (Saturday), and the morning of October 25, positions held by our units along the border with Tal Abyad,” the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) said in a statement dated Sunday. In June, the Kurdish fighters and their Arab rebel allies expelled ISIS extremists from Tal Abyad after fierce clashes. The allegations of Turkish attacks come amid heightened tensions as Turkey wages a relentless military campaign against Kurdish militants both at home and in northern Iraq. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin Monday accused the Democratic Union Party (PYD) — the political arm of the YPG — of trying to create a “de facto situation” in northern Syria on the pretext of fighting ISIS. “We will naturally never allow this game,” he said on NTV television. Erdogan Monday vowed that Turkey would press on with its war against “terrorists” before and after Sunday’s election. “They will continue against all terrorist organisations,” he said, adding that Turkey makes no distinction between the PKK, ISIS and the DHKP-C, an outlawed Marxist group that has carried out a number of attacks. Kurdish Headline: Islamic State attack Kurdish headquarters in Syria’s Hasakah

The radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) launched an attack on headquarters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the vicinity of Mount Abdulaziz in the western countryside of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, local sources reported on Monday. Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, media activist Mohammed Haskawi said that ISIS militants targeted a YPG military base near Mount Abdulaziz with a number of mortar shells, without any reports of casualties. In the meantime, ISIS clashed with the Kurdish forces west of Hasakah, where at least seven ISIS militants and four Kurdish fighters were killed. Separately, civil rights activist Delovan Mohammed told ARA News that  warplanes of the U.S.-led coalition targeted several ISIS strongholds south of Hasakah, beside hitting a tactical unit for the terror group near Mount Abdulaziz. Over the past 24 hours, the U.S.-led coalition’s warplanes hit 16 military targets of ISIS in different parts of Iraq and Syria. October 26, 2015

Headline: 2 Police, 7 Militants Dead in Turkey Raid on IS Targets

A raid on an Islamic State cell in southeastern Turkey left two Turkish police officers and seven militants dead Monday, as authorities pressed their effort to combat the extremists based across the border in Syria. The firefight occurred as police raided multiple houses Monday in the mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir. Security officials said five police officers were wounded and 12 militants were captured. Turkish authorities have blamed the Islamic State group for a double suicide bombing in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, earlier this month that killed more than 100 people. One witness to the clash Monday told VOA’s Turkish service that the fighting began in the middle of the night. “Smoke was coming from this locations behind me,” the witness said. “Allahu-akbar sounds coming from the flats the police raided, I don’t know who they were but I guess they were ISIS militants. When we went over there to look afterwards, there was a body lying on the ground, covered with newspapers. Everywhere was riddled with bullet holes.” October 26, 2015

Headline: Bomb blast kills two Afghan security guards in Nangarhar

Two security guards working for the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission were killed in the eastern city of Jalalabad on Monday when a roadside bomb blew up as their vehicle passed, a police official said.  The provincial head of the AIHRC, which monitors human rights in Afghanistan, was in the vehicle when the bomb detonated, Nangarhar police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal said. “He survived but unfortunately two of his bodyguards were killed and two wounded. It is still unclear if he was the target,” he said. Nicholas Haysom, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, condemned the attack, the latest in a wave that has intensified this year as the insurgency against the Western-backed government in Kabul has spread. Headline:   Libya shelling of anti-peace deal rally hits 12

The death toll for the shelling of a rally in Libya’s second city Benghazi protesting against a UN-proposed peace deal has jumped to 12, medics said. At least 12 people died and 39 were wounded after a volley of shells hit the rally attended by hundreds of people, the LANA news agency close to the internationally recognized Libyan government reported Saturday. Those present were demonstrating against a proposed power-sharing deal put forward by Libya’s UN envoy, Bernardino Leon. On their Facebook pages, the Benghazi Medical Center announced eight dead, while the city’s Al-Jalaa hospital announced four had died. Medics initially said five people were killed. There was no immediate word on who was behind the shelling. On Oct. 8, after almost a year of arduous negotiations, Leon put forward a list of names to head a power-sharing government, but both sides rejected the proposed appointments. Friday’s shelling came two days after Leon insisted he would press on with efforts to clinch a political deal. October 26, 2015

Headline: 1 dead, more than 100 hurt in Bangladesh bomb attacks

As thousands of Shiite Muslims gathered for a religious procession before dawn Saturday, unidentified attackers hurled home-made bombs that exploded in the crowd and killed a teenage boy while injuring more than 100 others in Bangladesh’s capital, police said. Police said the attack on Shiites – a minority in the Sunni-dominated country – was unprecedented for Bangladesh, which has seen a rise in violence this year claimed by extremist Islamist groups amid political instability. Authorities immediately arrested two suspects and recovered two unexploded bombs, but they dismissed the attack as an attempt to further destabilize the country. No group immediately claimed responsibility. “Given the nature of attacks, I think this has been done to create chaos in the country. It is sabotage,” Dhaka’s senior police official Asaduzzamn Mia said. “But it is clear that it was a planned attack.” Witnesses said some 25,000 had started gathering at 2 a.m. for the 8-kilometer (5-mile) march through Dhaka’s older quarter from Huseni Dalan, an important 17th century Shiite center of learning, to a mosque. Of the five bombs thrown into the crowd, three exploded, sending thousands of panicked people fleeing in all directions. October 24, 2015

Yemeni forces loyal to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi made gains on Sunday in the southwestern city of Taiz after days of battles with Houthi fighters, a local official and residents said. The Hadi supporters, who have been backed by airstrikes by a Saudi-led coalition since March, made particular progress around the presidential palace, the locals said. The complex has changed hands several times and been all but destroyed in the fighting. Medical sources said 13 Houthi fighters were killed in the fighting in Yemen’s third largest city. So were eight fighters loyal to Hadi. Several residents said Hadi loyalists had taken control of a number of mountain peaks on the southern approach to Taiz, Yemen’s cultural capital. Houthi gunmen prevented convoys of medical supplies from entering an enclave of Taiz, the aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres said. Residents there reported the rebels were also blocking the entry of food, water and fuel to the area, it said. “After weeks of negotiations, we have made no progress in convincing officials of the need to provide impartial medical assistance,” MSF’s emergency manager for Yemen, Karline Kleijer, said in a statement. A security official in Aden told Reuters on Sunday that armed tribesmen raided the central prison in Aden, killing a guard and wounding another, to free a prisoner held for an earlier attack in the city. The U.S. Navy plans to send the destroyer USS Lassen within 12 nautical miles of artificial islands built by China in the South China Sea within 24 hours, in the first of a series of challenges to China’s territorial claims, a U.S. defense official said on Monday. The patrol would occur near Subi and Mischief reefs in the Spratly archipelago, features that were formerly submerged at high tide before China began a massive dredging project to turn them into islands in 2014. The ship would likely be accompanied by a U.S. Navy P-8A surveillance plane and possibly P-3 surveillance plane, which have been conducting regular surveillance missions in the region, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Additional patrols would follow in coming weeks and could also be conducted around features that Vietnam and the Philippines have built up in the Spratlys, the official added. October 26, 2015

North Korea warned that North-South relations could return to a state of hostility after the South Korean navy fired shots at a North Korean vessel that had crossed a disputed maritime border. A spokesman for Pyongyang’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland said Sunday on KCNA, “South Korea’s warmongering military launched a provocation at [North Korean] patrol boats conducting regular maritime missions, while fulminating about [North Korean advancement] toward the Northern Limit Line.” On Sunday, North Korea denounced South Korea’s military for bringing a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to Korea’s coast, a reference to the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarrier USS Ronald Reagan. The carrier had taken part in a South Korean naval parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Korean independence. October 26, 2015

Headline:   At least 100 dead after strong quake hits Afghanistan, Pakistan

A major earthquake struck the remote Afghan northeast on Monday, killing more than 200 people in Afghanistan and nearby northern Pakistan, injuring hundreds and sending shock waves as far as New Delhi, officials said. The death toll could climb in coming days because communications were down in much of the rugged Hindu Kush mountain range where the quake was centered. In one of the worst incidents, at least 12 girls were killed in a stampede to flee their school building in Taloqan, just west of Badakhshan province where the tremor’s epicenter was located. “They fell under the feet of other students,” said Abdul Razaq Zinda, provincial head of the Afghan National Disaster Management Agency, who reported heavy damage in Takhar. Shockwaves were felt in New Delhi in northern India and across northern Pakistan, where hundreds of people ran out of buildings as the ground rolled beneath them. No deaths were reported in India. “We were very scared … We saw people leaving buildings, and we were remembering our God,” Pakistani journalist Zubair Khan said by telephone from the Swat Valley northwest of the capital Islamabad. “I was in my car and, when I stopped my car, the car itself was shaking as if someone was pushing it back and forth.” October 26, 2015

Headline: Deadly flash floods hit Egypt’s Alexandria

At least seven people have died after heavy rain fell in the Egyptian Mediterranean city of Alexandria. Torrential rain began falling in the early hours of Sunday, and was accompanied by strong winds. A frontal depression has brought unseasonably unsettled weather to much of the eastern Mediterranean. The northern portion of the depression brought very heavy rain across Turkey. Through Thursday and Friday, 246mm of rain fell in Marmaris on the south coast. This is five times as much rain as would normally be expected during the entire month of October. The rain along Egypt’s Mediterranean coastline was also unseasonable. Alexandria would usually only expect to see 5mm of rain during the entire month. It is not known exactly how much rain fell in Alexandria. The official rain gauge reported little or no rain during the period in question. However, images showed people wading through thigh-deep water after the event. It is reported that the deaths of a man and two children were caused by a live electric cable, that was feeding the tram network, falling into the water. Another man was electrocuted in a separate incident, and a motorist drowned when he was unable to get out of his vehicle in time. In the wake of the flooding, there was criticism of the poor drainage system within the city and calls for the city’s governor, Hani al-Messirial-Messiri, to resign. October 26, 2015

ADL urged the 58 members of the executive board to reject what it called a “blatant attempt to hijack UNESCO and exacerbate religious conflict in Jerusalem” and to “exercise responsible leadership to promote calm and religious respect at this tumultuous time.”

Headline: Netanyahu: We won’t give up Temple Mount or allow Jews to pray

Jordan’s King Abdullah II has stepped up to intervene in the groundswell of Arab terror aimed at Jews that if not halted, could become a tsunami to drown Arab-Israeli relations for decades. In a response to a statement made by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the weekend, the Hashemite monarch “welcomed” the initiative and said he believed it would help end the violence. “I heard the statements made by Prime Minister Netanyahu and his affirmation of his commitment to uphold the status quo. This is a commitment that we welcome very much here and we hope to see that those commitments are implemented on the ground,” the monarch said. “I believe that this would allow the violence to end, to decrease the tension and I hope will allow a resumption of efforts to readdress the core issues through negotiations because this is an issue that has to be dealt with as quickly as possible,” he added.

Syria Headline:     New FSA alliance formed in southern Syria

Syria Headline:   ISIS advances in eastern Aleppo after clashes with Syrian forces

Subsequent to conducting a number of car bomb attacks on locations of the Syrian regime forces, the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) advanced Sunday in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, local activists reported.

Everywhere was riddled with bullet holes.”

“I was in my car and, when I stopped my car, the car itself was shaking as if someone was pushing it back and forth.”
