Headline: Jerusalem on Lockdown, Prepares to Defend Against Terror

Headline:  Multiple Terror Attacks Hit Israel in Unprecedented Strikes Tuesday; Dozens Wounded

Neighborhoods in eastern Jerusalem were placed on full lockdown following a chain of mass casualty terror attacks Tuesday morning. All roads leading into Jerusalem were closed effective 11 am, until further notice. The security measures came in response to a set of at least three nearly simultaneous Arab terrorist attacks that left more than 17 civilians wounded. At least five are in critical condition, and half a dozen more are seriously wounded. Dozens more are badly traumatized after the attacks which took place on Bus #78 and in two locations in the very heart of the city, on Malchei Yisrael Street. Another attempted terror attack at the Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem was unsuccessful, however, and left only the terrorist dead.

News. “Israeli Jews, your numbers consist of eight million, but you will stand in this war against 13 million Palestinians – not just against hundreds of millions of Arabs, but all 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide.” Khatib also insisted that Israel is attempting to change the status quo on the Temple Mount, which Muslims claim is a holy site for them and which has been the holiest site in Judaism for thousands of years. “We have always said that Israel was digging under the Al Aqsa Mosque and it has become clear to everyone that we were right,” he said. “Israel always hid and denied that excavations under the mosque, and now everyone sees it,” Khatib said. “Israel claims that there are synagogues, museums and more. The army’s Artillery Corps struck two Assad regime military positions after a number of Syrian shells exploded in the northern Golan Heights on Tuesday. There were no injuries in Israel following the Syrian shelling. The IDF said its attack occurred in response to stray cross-border fire by the Syrian military due to internal battles raging with rebels on the Syrian side of the border. “The IDF sees the Syrian military as being responsible for what occurs in its territory and will not tolerate any attempt to harm the sovereignty of the State of Israel,” the military said.

Headline: Israel deploys hundreds of soldiers in Jerusalem

Headline: 1,400 Border Police reservists called for duty in light of security crisis

Six companies of Israeli soldiers were mobilized in Jerusalem Wednesday, as the IDF joined efforts to secure the city following an escalation in the violence there. The move is part of a slew of measures passed by the security cabinet overnight Tuesday aiming to prevent further terror attacks after the deadliest day so far in the current wave of unrest. “In accordance with the cabinet’s decision last night, as of this morning 300 IDF soldiers have already begun spreading out to provide additional security under police command,” an Israel Police spokesman said in a statement Wednesday morning. Police also began setting up checkpoints at “the exits of Palestinian villages and neighborhoods in east Jerusalem,” where most of the recent attackers have come from, a police spokeswoman said. Those police actions are intended to return security and order to all the country’s residents, the police said. The security cabinet also voted to ramp up security arrangements on Jerusalem’s public transport, where the IDF will bolster security until the Transportation Ministry enlists additional guards. Soldiers will be stationed at bus and light rail stops, as well as on buses and trains across the city.

Headline: Hezbollah on alert in Lebanon

Hezbollah has tightened security measures in Shiite-populated areas of Lebanon as the party ramps up its military presence in Syria while the Shiite holy day of Ashura nears, according to recent reports. The pro-Damascus daily As-Safir on Tuesday reported on Hezbollah’s heightened alert, saying it came amid growing fears of terrorist attacks in Lebanon following Russia’s military intervention in Syria backed by a coalition that includes the Lebanese Shiite party. “Hezbollah has tightened precautionary security procedures in certain Lebanese areas, the foremost of which is Dahiyeh,” the Lebanese daily said. It added that the new security measures had come at the same time as the party’s “widest ever participation in the Syrian war.” Pro-Hezbollah media outlets have all touted the party’s role in the “4+1 coalition” that also includes Russia, Iran, Syria and Iraq. Al-Akhbar reported that Hezbollah troops have been deploying to northwest Syria to take part in a major regime offensive, while a number of the party’s fighters, including two commanders, have been killed in recent days.

Headline: Three homemade bombs in Egypt’s Alexandria wound 2, damage train

Security officials say three homemade bombs have exploded along the railway of Egypt’s Mediterranean city of Alexandria, wounding a couple and damaging a train. Wednesday’s pre-dawn blasts are the latest sign that the restive Sinai peninsula’s Islamic insurgency has spread its reach to Egypt’s mainland. The insurgency escalated after the 2013 military overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. The officials said the bombs were spread out over a kilometer (0.6 miles) along the railway in Muharram Bek, near the city’s stadium. They wounded a man and his wife as well as dented and broke the glass of a parked train. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, which rattled windows and spread panic across downtown Alexandria. The officials requested anonymity because they are not authorized to brief reporters.

Syria Headline:    Two Shells Hit Russian Embassy Compound in Damascus

Two shells hit the Russian embassy area in Syria’s capital Damascus Tuesday as scores of pro-government supporters gathered outside the compound to thank Moscow for its intervention in Syria. According to a RIA Novosti correspondent on the scene, the diplomatic mission staff are all safe. “Two mortar rounds hit the Russian Embassy compound in Damascus. Employees at the diplomatic mission were not hurt,” the Embassy employee told RIA Novosti. An eye-witness at the scene told the news agency that several shells hit close to the site of a peace rally in support of Russia’s air campaign in Syria. “The rounds struck the location where a peace demonstration was underway in support of Russian action in Syria. One shell landed outside a sports club in al-Barada, the other in the al-Adawi [districts]. Several people were injured. The site of the blasts has been cordoned off,” the witness said. Earlier on Tuesday, several mortars were fired at the Russian Embassy, two of them striking the building. According to an embassy employee, no one inside the building was injured.

Moscow is “deliberately targeting” U.S.-backed forces in Syria as part of a military campaign that has killed up to 150 U.S.-trained rebels, a U.S. official told Fox News. The claim comes as the U.S. and Russian militaries try to reach an agreement about flight safety in the skies over Syria. Officials from both countries are holding their third video conference on the issue Wednesday, as U.S.-led coalition and Russian aircraft look to avoid collisions as they launch airstrikes into Syria. But even as they try to “de-conflict,” evidence is mounting that Russia’s air campaign is targeting more than just the Islamic State. “Putin is deliberately targeting our forces,” a U.S. official, who is disappointed in the U.S. response to Russia, told Fox News. “Our guys are fighting for their lives,” said the official, estimating up to 150 CIA-trained moderate rebels have been killed by the Russians. The Obama administration recently ended its troubled program to train select Syrian rebels, but has continued to equip the opposition. Over the weekend, the U.S. military airdropped 50 tons of small arms ammo and grenades in northern Syria.

Syria Headline: Thousands of Iranian troops ‘arrive in Syria’ for Aleppo offensive

Islamic State militants battled rival insurgent groups on Wednesday north of the city of Aleppo, where officials say the Syrian army is preparing an offensive of its own backed by Iranian soldiers and Russian jets. A rebel fighter and a group monitoring the war said Islamic State fighters took control of parts of the towns of Ahras and Tel Jabin, about 12 km (8 miles) north of Aleppo, before being pushed back. Gains by Islamic State north of Aleppo would threaten the supply lines of rival rebels inside the city, which is divided between insurgents and government forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the road used by Aleppo residents heading north to the Turkish border remained closed on Wednesday. “Today there are fierce battles between us and Daesh in Ahras, Tel Jabin, and rural northern Aleppo,” said Hassan Haj Ali, head of the Liwa Suqour al-Jabal rebel group, using another name for Islamic State. His unit is one of several foreign-backed insurgent forces which find themselves fighting Islamic State on the ground, at the same time as they are bombed by Russian jets and are bracing for further ground attacks by the army and its foreign allies. “There are mobilizations by the regime in most parts of Aleppo, particularly in Bashkoy,” he said, referring to another town north of Aleppo, which before Syria’s civil war began in 2011 was the country’s biggest city and a major commercial and industrial center. “There were advances (by Islamic State) at dawn but we were able to recover Ahras entirely. There are battles in Tel Jabin,” said Ali, speaking to Reuters via an internet messaging system. Syria Headline: Rebels fortify front line with anti-tank missiles

Syrian insurgents are deploying extensive supplies of anti-tank missiles provided by their foreign backers to counter ground attacks by the Syrian army and its allies, backed by heavy Russian airstrikes, rebel commanders said Tuesday. Two rebel commanders contacted by Reuters declined to confirm whether they had received additional missiles since the Russian airstrikes began, but said they had “excellent” supplies and were stationing them along a 30-km front to halt the ground offensive. Activists, however, said supplies had been stepped up since the Russian airstrikes began on Sept. 30. With Russian air support and help from Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iranian soldiers, with Quds Force commander Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani also believed to be in the country, the Syrian army is trying to drive rebels from western areas that are crucial to President Bashar Assad’s survival, and has recaptured several towns in the provinces of Hama and Latakia. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group tracking the war, said a battle was in progress for control of the town of Kafr Nabouda in Hama province, which the army said it captured Monday. At least 25 fighters on the government’s side were killed, it said. The town marks the western edge of the defensive line along which the rebels have stationed a dozen anti-tank missile launch platforms, said Ahmed al-Seoud, head of the 13th Division, a foreign-backed faction fighting under the umbrella of the Free Syrian Army. “They are highly effective. Iraq Headline: Iraqi army, militia forces launch assault to retake Baiji from ISIS

The Iraqi army and volunteer militia fighters launched an assault on Wednesday to retake the city of Baiji in northern Iraq from ISIS, an Iraqi military spokesman said. Baiji is near the country’s largest oil refinery and is only 150 km (90 miles) away from Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city which fell to ISIS in June 2014. The city has since changed hands several times in fierce clashes. The Hashid Shaabi militiamen and Iraqi army soldiers began their assault from the south on Wednesday and managed to fight their way into the center of the city, military spokesman Colonel Mohammed al-Asadi said. The force was backed up by airstrikes from the U.S. and Iraqi airforce, Asadi said. An officer at the regional military command center told Reuters in July that crude oil storage tanks and pipelines at the refinery had been damaged beyond repair, while natural gas tanks and processing facilities, as well as the power station providing electricity to the refinery, had suffered damage.

Kurdish Headline: ISIS clashes with Kurds, strives to regain lost areas north Raqqa

At least six militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) radical group were killed in clashes with Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) near Ain Issa town in Raqqa province, northeastern Syria, military sources reported on Tuesday. The YPG local spokesman Habun Osman told ARA News that clashes broke our in the YPG-held village of Bir Issa near Ain Issa town after a number of ISIS militants tried to infiltrate into the area coming from Raqqa city. “Our forces deterred the terrorists’ attempt to regain Bir Issa in the northern countryside of Raqqa, and the group was forced to withdraw under the blows of the YPG,” Osman said. “We have collected six corpses of ISIS terrorists following the clashes,” the source added. The YPG has also destroyed two ISIS vehicles in Tuesday’s clashes, according to Osman. Noteworthy, the Kurdish forces and some Syrian rebel factions have recently formed a new alliance under the banner “Syrian Democratic Forces”, aimed at liberating the entire province of Raqqa and other Syrian areas from ISIS extremists.

Headline: Turkey warns US, Russia — Don’t back Kurdish militia

Headline: PYD Leader Warns Turkey

Turkey has warned the United States and Russia it will not tolerate Kurdish territorial gains by Kurdish militia close to its frontiers in northwestern Syria, two senior officials said.
“This is clear cut for us and there is no joking about it,” one official said of the possibility of Syrian Kurdish militia crossing the Euphrates to extend control along Turkish borders from Iraq’s Kurdistan region toward the Mediterranean coast. Turkey fears advances by Kurdish YPG militia, backed by its PYD political wing, on the Syrian side of its 900 km border will fuel separatist ambitions among Kurds in its own southeastern territories. But Washington has supported YPG fighters as an effective force in combating Daesh. “The PYD has been getting closer with both the US and Russia of late. We view the PYD as a terrorist group and we want all countries to consider the consequences of their cooperation,” one of the Turkish officials said. Turkey suspects Russia, which launched air strikes in Syria two weeks ago, has also been lending support to the YPG and PYD.

Headline:  Iran’s Guardian Council passes nuclear bill into law

Iran’s Guardian Council ratified a bill on Wednesday approving the nuclear deal reached by Tehran and six world powers, state news agency IRNA and other agencies said, allowing the government to implement the agreement. Parliament on Tuesday approved the bill with a strong majority, in a victory for President Hassan Rouhani’s government over conservative opponents of the July 14 deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The Guardian Council, made up of six Muslim clerics appointed by the Supreme Leader and six lawyers elected by parliament, is charged with ensuring draft laws do not contradict religious laws or Iran’s constitution. “The majority of the Guardian Council did not find the bill… to be against religious law and the constitution,” the council’s spokesman Nejatollah Ebrahimian was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency. The exact stance of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the last word on all matters of state, is not known.

Headline: Afghan travellers stranded after Taliban blocks highway

As many as 29 Afghan border police officers were killed after the Taliban overran two check points and seized weapons in southern Helmand province, an official said Wednesday. The police officers were killed after a three-day battle, when reinforcements failed to arrive, according to Bashir Ahmad Shakir, a provincial council member in Helmand province. Shakir says the Taliban initially killed 21 officers and took eight hostage, but later killed the eight prisoners. Shakir says the Nawzad district of Helmand province, where the battles took place, is a particularly volatile area that is regularly targeted by insurgents. “If reinforcements would have gotten there, the police forces could have survived,” said Shakir, who added that the Taliban fighters captured vehicles, weapons and ammunition. Qari Yousef Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack. The Taliban seized the northern Afghan city of Kunduz in late September. Government troops took back much of the city three days later, and on Monday the Taliban announced the withdrawal of their last fighters.

Headline:   AQIM battalion attacks Tunisian soldiers in Kasserine

The Uqba bin Nafi battalion, an al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) group that operates in Tunisia, has claimed credit for killing two Tunisian soldiers and wounding four others in the Kasserine region. The jihadist group said on its official Twitter feed that its forces attacked the Tunisian army in the Mount Chaambi area of Kasserine, resulting in “large injuries in the apostate army.” Tunisian authorities have said that the soldiers were killed “after an exchange of gunfire with terrorists.” Additionally, a local herder was kidnapped by the al Qaeda battalion. In additional tweets, the group said that it was starting a “new stage in the conflict with Tunisia and their supporters who reported the mujahideen.” It also claimed to have “finished off” several Tunisian spies in recent days, including the local herder. The attack comes almost two months after the Uqba bin Nafi battalion killed a customs agent in the Bouchebke area of Tunisia. In the initial claim of responsibility released for the Aug. 24 attack, the jihadist group said that it ambushed a number of customs agents, “killing a group of them.” It also said that it took three weapons, identified as Steyr AUG’s in photos released from the attack. In addition, the group killed four security officers near the Algerian border earlier this year. Its most deadly attack on the Tunisian military happened in the Mount Chaambi region last July, an incident that left 15 soldiers dead and 20 others wounded.

Headline: Nusra Front calls on militants in Caucasus to attack Russia

The head of Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate has called on militants in the Caucasus to attack Russian civilians and soldiers in retaliation for Moscow’s airstrikes in Syria. “If the Russian army kills the people of Syria, then kill their people. And if they kill our soldiers, then kill their soldiers. An eye for an eye,” Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, head of the Nusra Front, said in an audio recording released late Monday. He pledged that Moscow’s air war in Syria would have dire consequences for Russia. “The war in Syria will make the Russians forget the horrors that they found in Afghanistan,” Jolani said. He called on armed opposition groups to set aside their differences until both air wars had been defeated. “Delay the disputes until the demise and smashing of the Western Crusader and Russian campaign on Syrian land,” he said. Jolani has also issued bounties worth millions of dollars for the killing of Assad and the Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah. Jolani said he would pay “3 million euros ($3.4 million) for anyone who can kill Bashar Assad and end his story.” Jolani also offered “an amount of 2 million euros ($2.2 million) for whoever kills Hasan Nasrallah.”

Three blasts hit the city of Maiduguri in northeast Nigeria on Tuesday killing a number of people, locals and the Red Cross said. The “huge explosions” happened in the Ajilari Cross area of the city, which has been targeted by similar attacks twice in the last month, including on September 20 when at least 117 were killed. The previous attacks were blamed on Boko Haram Islamists, which has increasingly hit “soft” civilian targets in recent months using suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices. It was not immediately clear what caused the latest blasts, which happened in quick succession from 8:10 pm (1910 GMT), said Bashir Mohammed, whose house is near the scene. “We are all confused and people are running helter-skelter,” he said. Sheriff Ahmad, a cleric in the area, said: “Many people have been killed. I don’t know how many and I don’t think anyone can tell you now.” Ahmad described seeing body parts on his house, while Hafsat Sani, a nurse at the nearby Umaru Shehu Hospital, said: “There are many houses around the area and the blasts have affected many of them.” The hospital quickly began receiving the injured while police, soldiers, the Red Cross and officials from Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were mobilised, he said. Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday informed Congress he is sending about 300 U.S. military personnel to Cameroon, the White House said, part of a stepped-up effort by Washington to counter the violent group Boko Haram. An advance force of U.S. military personnel has arrived in Cameroon, an administration official said on condition of anonymity. The forces will be conducting airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations, the official said, adding they would be armed for their own protection.

At least six people have lost their lives in a “terrorist attack” carried out by unknown militants in the Timbuktu region of northern Mali, the government says. The militants raided a convoy of civilian vehicles guarded by police forces in an area some 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Gao, the biggest city in northern Mali, at around 7:30 a.m. local time (0730 GMT) on Tuesday, the government said in a statement. The Malian government did not specify who was traveling in the civilian vehicles and why they were being escorted by security forces. The terrorist attack with rocket-launchers caused the death of six civilians and wounded two others including a soldier,” according to the statement. A security source told AFP that the raid began when one of the vehicles hit a landmine planted by the militants. Two other vehicles arrived at the scene and were damaged before the militants “came out from their hiding place to fire on the civilians,” the source added. Three trucks hired by the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) later arrived and were set alight by the militants, according to the source.

Yemeni officials say five civilians and 12 fighters from the forces fighting Shiite rebels known as Houthis were killed this month by rebel-planted mines in a central province. The officials, medical and security officials from the anti-rebel side, say Wednesday that the Houthis planted the mines before they were pushed out from their last outpost in Marib province last week. In Taiz province, medical and security officials say 13 Houthis and allied fighters were killed in airstrikes by a Saudi-led coalition, while fierce clashes were ongoing near the provincial capital’s airport. The officials and witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media or for fear of reprisals.

A gigantic hole in the sun’s atmosphere has opened up and a broad stream of solar wind is flowing out of it. This is called a “coronal hole.” Coronal holes are places in the sun’s atmosphere where the magnetic field unfurls and allows solar wind to escape. In the image above, the sun’s magnetic field is traced by white curving lines. Outside the coronal hole, those magnetic fields curve back on themselves, trapping solar wind inside their loops. Inside the coronal hole, no such trapping occurs. Solar wind plasma is free to fly away as indicated by the white arrows. For much of the next week, Earth’s environment in space will be dominated by winds flowing from this broad hole. This should activate some beautiful Arctic auroras. NOAA forecasters estimate a 65% of polar geomagnetic storms today as Earth moves deeper into the solar wind stream.

Headline: Jordan Bans Religious Jews’ Tefillin at the Border

A Jordanian security official last week forbade a group of religious Israeli tourists to bring in tefillin, the ritual phylacteries that Jewish men wear every weekday. The official, a report on Israel Radio said, told the group that bringing in such objects was not permissible, and demanded that they surrender the phylacteries before crossing the border. The official said that Jordan did not allow the ritual objects in the country in order to ensure the “safety” of the travelers. Muslims who saw the objects – or worse, saw Jews wearing the objects – would be offended, the official said, and might not be able to restrain themselves from attacking the wearers. An Israeli officials said that the phenomenon was not new, but that Israeli travel agents and government agencies did not inform tourists to Jordan of the regulations because they are not “official,” but imposed at the discretion of border officials in Jordan depending on the situation. On Saturday, Jordan’s parliament accused Israel of “state terrorism” against the Palestinian people after Israeli troops shot dead seven Gazans who tried to breach the border fence and infiltrate Israel, AFP reported.

Thousands of Lebanese rallied at the presidential palace outside Beirut on Sunday in a show of support for Christian politician Michel Aoun, pressing their demand for him to fill the presidency vacant for over a year. Waving the orange flag of Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement (FPM), they packed streets in the Baabda district that houses the headquarters of the presidency. The presidency is set aside for a Maronite Christian but has been unoccupied due to a political crisis stoked by regional conflicts including the war in neighbouring Syria.
“The president of the republic shouldn’t be just any person who fills the post, as some people want him to be,” Aoun told the crowd as his supporters shouted, “Aoun for president of the republic!” “It should be someone who is like you, who reflects you and who rejects oppression and stands up for your rights,” he said.

The alliance calling itself the Democratic Forces of Syria includes the Kurdish YPG militia and Syrian Arab groups, some of which fought alongside it in a campaign that drove Islamic State from wide areas of northern Syria earlier this year. The Arab groups in the new alliance are operating under the name “The Syrian Arab Coalition” – a grouping which US officials have said would receive support under a new US strategy aimed at fighting Islamic State in Syria.

A RUSSIAN jet has been shot down by Turkish forces after it flew into the country’s airspace, according to as yet unconfirmed reports circulating on social media. Eyewitnesses saw a large explosion in Huraytan, northern Syria (24 min. north of Aleppo), while three fighter jets were hovering above. One journalist tweeted that three Turkish planes were responding to “mysterious” lock-ons from Mig-29 jets, which are used by Putin’s forces. Express.co.uk has contacted the Turkish government and the Russian military but neither could be reached for comment. It comes amid heightening tensions between Putin and the West just days after another Russian bomber violated Turkish airspace. F-16 fighters were scrambled after a MIG-29 twin-engined jet locked radar on Turkish planes near the town of Yayladagi, in Hatay province close to the border with Syria. Turkish jets then escorted the Soviet-era aircraft back into Syrian airspace.

Two powerful bombs exploded near the main train station in Ankara on Saturday morning, targeting a peace rally and causing carnage, killing at least 97 people and injuring more than 400 others in the deadliest attack in the Turkish capital in recent memory. The explosions, which caused chaos and bloodshed, took place during a peace march involving, among others, the pro-Kurdish HDP, or People’s Democratic Party. The casualties, reported by the interior ministry, consisted primarily of people gathered outside the main train station to attend a lunchtime demonstration to call for an end to the renewed conflict between the Kurdistan Workers Pary (PKK) and the Turkish government. About 14,000 people were in the area. Two suicide bombers are believed to have caused the blasts, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in a televised address to the nation. “In total 97 people have been murdered, 68 of them died right after the blast, whereas 29 of them were severely wounded and sent to the hospitals, where they lost their lives,” said Dr. Huseyin Demirdezen, a member of head council of Turkish Medical Association. The attack came before national elections, scheduled for November 1. A video on social media shows a ring of young people dancing and singing before an orange blast erupts in the background. The video ends with the crowd running away from the blast. Following the attack, for which no group has claimed responsibility, bodies lay in front of the station on Hipodrum Street and paramedics tended to the injured as a police helicopter circled overhead. Video showed bodies strewn on sidewalks, with injured people lying on the ground with bystanders trying desperately to help them. Protest banners and flags littered the ground. Members of the public helped carry the injured to ambulances and buses to take them to hospital. The blasts were so powerful they shook high-rise office buildings at some distance. The death toll is expected to climb.

Ankara dismissed the PKK declaration as a ploy. The renewed attacks on Kurdish targets comes after bombs detonated just seconds apart in Ankara on Satursday, as crowds gathered for a march to protest over the deaths of hundreds of people since the collapse of a ceasefire between security forces and the rebel PKK in July. Turkish security officials blamed the Islamic State, which holds swathes of Syrian land bordering Turkey, but the group made no claim to the bombing. Iran test-fired a long-range missile called the Emad on Sunday, its state news agency said, leading the U.S. State Department to say it would take “appropriate actions” at the United Nations if the move violated U.N. Security Council resolutions. A State Department spokesman didn’t elaborate on what that action might entail. But Mr. Araghchi said Monday that the test wasn’t a violation of the nuclear deal, and that Iran wouldn’t compromise on its national defense, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported. But the deal’s prohibition “doesn’t lie in missile booster or nonnuclear warhead design, or range-payload,” said Anthony Cordesman, an expert on Iranian missile capabilities at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. “It only applies to actually developing and deploying a nuclear warhead for a given missile.” It is unclear whether Iran has carried out such development activities for the Emad, which is estimated by some analysts to have a range of up to 800 miles, putting it within striking distance of regional adversaries, including Israel.

Three explosions killed 37 people Saturday in a Chadian city on the shores of Lake Chad, security sources said, in the latest atrocity blamed on the Nigerian jihadist group Boko Haram. Another 52 people were reportedly wounded in the attacks that struck at around 4:00 pm (1500 GMT), the sources told AFP, with one blast targeting the fish market at Baga Sola and the other two occurring at a refugee camp on the outskirts of the city. It was the first time Baga Sola was hit by such an attack, and the belief that it was relatively safe had led tens of thousands of Nigerian refugees and Chadians displaced by Boko Haram violence to seek shelter there. “There are bodies everywhere, a head here, a leg there, everyone is in a state of panic,” a resident told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that “people are now trying to piece together the bodies.” Rescuers have evacuated the wounded to an overwhelmed local hospital, a security source said, adding that 10 people were in “very critical” condition. Yemen’s remaining Jews have been given a stark choice by their government: Convert to Islam or leave the country. According to acting Regional Cooperation Minister Ayoub Kara, a Druse lawmaker who maintains ties with contacts across the Arab world, a representative of Yemen’s small Jewish community reached out to him with a written ultimatum from the country’s government. The Jews were told to “convert or leave the state,” the Likud MK told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday, adding that the unnamed Jewish representative “requested that I take care of this.” A spokesman for the party of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh said the report was incorrect. Yemen boasted a Jewish population of over 50,000 during the mid-20th century; there are now fewer than 100 Jews in the capital, with another community of similar size in the northern town Raida. The majority of the country’s Jews immigrated to Israel shortly after the it was established. The Jewish community has faced dangers in recent years. After Houthi rebels entered the capital last year, supporters gathered in the streets, some chanting “Death to America! Death to the Jews! Victory to Islam.” The Houthi logo features the phrases “Death to Israel” and “Damn the Jews.”

The wave of terrorist attacks in recent days continued Thursday with stabbings in Tel Aviv, Afula, Kiryat Arba and Jerusalem throughout the day, leaving four seriously wounded. One of the assailants was killed at the scene, two were arrested, and another was being hunted by the IDF. 

In central Tel Aviv Thursday morning, a young Palestinian man armed with a screwdriver stabbed a female soldier and wounded four bystanders before he was shot and killed by an air force officer who was passing by.

In Afula on Thursday afternoon, a 20-year-old Palestinian from the West Bank stabbed a soldier in the Jezreel Valley city.
The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) named the Afula knife attacker as Jenin resident Tarak Yahya, 20. Yahya, who is single, has no history of previous security offenses or arrests. He fell upon a 21-year-old soldier in uniform, stabbing him multiple times in the chest and leaving him moderately to seriously wounded, paramedics and medical personnel said. Yahya then fled, chased by a number of locals. They managed to catch up with the perpetrator, tackle him and pin him to the ground until the police arrived. In videos posted online afterward, three men can be seen sitting on him.
When the police came to evacuate the terrorist, they faced an angry mob of locals trying to harm the man and they used pepper spray to clear the crowd. Yahya was not wounded, other than light injuries caused by a number of blows from locals, a Magen David Adom paramedic said. As police left the scene with him, several residents threw rocks at the police vehicle, as well as at cars belonging to Arab motorists afterward.

“Police have made security assessments for Friday prayers and have added many metal detectors and extra checkpoints throughout the Old City, and will continue to closely monitor Arab neighborhoods,” he said.
Amid the elevated security, Muslim men under the age of 50 will continue to be barred from praying on the Temple Mount, Rosenfeld said. Violent clashes between Palestinians and the IDF continued throughout Thursday in the West Bank.

Five Palestinians were killed and many Israelis were wounded—including an Israeli teen stabbed with a vegetable peeler– as several weeks of violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank continued Friday, injuring hundreds and putting police on both sides of the border on high alert. Palestinians rallied following Friday prayers in Gaza in support of Palestinian protests in Jerusalem. Angry Palestinian youths started throwing stones on the other side of the border while Israeli soldiers responded with tear gas and then with live ammunition, according to a Palestinian witness in Gaza.  The Israeli military says about 200 Palestinians in Gaza advanced toward soldiers on the border and threw rocks and rolled burning tires at troops stationed there. About a dozen people were injured in the fighting. The attacks have shocked Israelis and sparked fears of a new Palestinian Intifada, or uprising. However Israeli officials have downplayed that possibility, saying this is the kind of violent spike Israel has faced periodically in recent decades. But Gaza-based Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh applauded the recent Palestinian stabbing attacks across Israel at a speech in Gaza Friday morning and called the surge in violence an “Intifada” or uprising.

Headline:  Netanyahu’s message to Israelis: Trust me, and we’ll beat this terror war, too

Amid a new terror phase, marked by a surge over recent days in what might be described as Palestinian “suicide stabbings” — relentless attacks by lone terrorists, across Israel and in the West Bank — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a press conference Thursday night to try to reassure an increasingly worried public. He didn’t announce a raft of new measures, but he and his security chiefs set out several central themes that served to underline that Israel is again on something akin to a war footing:

1. This is part of an endless battle against those who want to kill us: Israel has been fighting terrorism since “the start of the Zionist enterprise,” Netanyahu said early in his press conference. Fighting it, and beating it. Today we’re tackling “terrorists who have been incited and are filled with hatred.” And Israel, he promised, will prevail in this phase of the ongoing struggle too. (Half of the hundreds of Palestinians arrested as terror suspects in recent weeks are minors, Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan said a little later — hundreds of young minds incited to violence.)
2. 2. I’m the best man for the job: Simply by bringing together a kind of war council — addressing the public along with two key ministers and two security chiefs — Netanyahu was underlining that this is, if not a war, another serious and likely protracted battle. He hadn’t convened this kind of public forum since last summer’s war against Hamas in Gaza. And the message he hammered home was that his “team” could be trusted to beat the terrorists. And that his political opponents — making their irresponsible declarations from right and left — could not.
3. Israelis are a brave, resilient people: Netanyahu took pains to praise the “acts of heroism” by soldiers, cops and “ordinary citizens” who have intervened to thwart and halt several attacks in recent days. It’s a lousy neighborhood, he acknowledged. “We live in the Middle East,” he noted dryly, “and the flames of extremism reach us too.” But he was “proud” to be part of a nation of such courage and determination.

Lebanese security forces fired tear gas and water cannons to break up an anti-government protest in Beirut on Thursday, and the country’s fractious leaders postponed talks aimed at resolving a political crisis that is feeding public discontent. Anger at Lebanon’s government has fueled repeated protests in recent months. Discontent with widely perceived corruption and incompetence came to a head in July when the government failed to agree a solution to a trash disposal crisis and piles of garbage were left to fester in the streets. Protesters threw projectiles including rocks at a line of riot police blocking the way to the Lebanese parliament in Beirut’s commercial district. Live TV footage showed at least one injured riot policeman on the ground. Three dozen people were taken to hospitals suffering from suffocation as a result of tear gas, medics said. Six policemen were also wounded, a security official said. The Lebanese government grouping of rival factions has struggled to make even basic decisions since it was formed last year. Lebanon has also been without a president for more than a year in the absence of a deal on who should take the post.

The Obama administration is abandoning its failed attempt to build and train a rebel force in Syria to take on Islamic State and will focus on equipping selected leaders and providing air support to their units. The change is a recognition that President Barack Obama’s original plan to train thousands of moderate fighters fell short, producing only a handful of rebels to combat the terror group. The U.S. instead will identify leaders in the region and provide their forces with arms and other support short of missile launchers or anti-tank weapons. “We’ve has some significant challenges, so we’re going to pause the training where we recruit specific fighters,” Christine Wormuth, undersecretary of defense for policy told reporters Friday in Washington. “Obviously this is a different approach.” The president’s strategy in the region is being retooled as the U.S. faces a new challenge from Russia’s intervention in the Syrian civil war to defend its ally, President Bashar al-Assad. The revamped program will provide small arms and ammunition to Arab and Kurdish groups in Syria that are fighting the terrorist group, according to a U.S. official. Some of the leaders selected will be trained to pass information on potential targets for airstrikes to Joint Operating Centers run by the U.S. and allies, according to the official, who asked not to be named discussing details of the plan.

An Iraqi lawmaker says Baghdad may soon request Russian air strikes against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) group in Iraq. Hakim al-Zamili, the head of the Iraqi parliament’s Defense and Security Committee, said on Oct. 7 in Baghdad that “I think the upcoming few days or weeks Iraq will be forced to ask Russia to launch air strikes and that depends on their success in Syria.” He added that “we are seeking to see Russia have a bigger role in Iraq,” adding, “definitely a bigger role than the Americans [have now].”  Zamili, a Shi’a who was a member of the radical Shi’ite Sadrist Movement, was the deputy health minister in 2006-07 and suspected of involvement in the abduction of Sunnis. Asked later on Oct. 7 whether Moscow had received any official request from Baghdad for Russian air strikes against the ISIL group in Iraq, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov answered “no.” Meanwhile, The Russian formation of a coordination cell in Baghdad is an inflection point aimed at undercutting U.S. influence over the direction of the anti-ISIS efforts in Iraq and Syria. However, the Russian footprint in Iraq is much smaller than in Syria, while U.S. influence over the ISF and Iraqi state are much greater than U.S. influence in Syria.

Iraq Headline:  Mortar attack in Iraq’s Diyala province kills 35

Iraqi police officials say at least 35 people were killed in a mortar attack on villages around the provincial capital of the country’s eastern Diyala province. A police official from the city of Baquba told The Associated Press that at least 35 civilians were killed late Friday when the mortars landed on their villages in the nearby suburbs. At least 45 people were wounded in the attack. The official did not speculate on who may be responsible for the attack, but the militant group ISIS has claimed responsibility for several recent attacks in the volatile province. Hospital officials corroborated the casualties. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief media.

One man was killed when a protest in Iraq’s Kurdistan region turned violent on Friday, two officials told Reuters, in the most sustained display of street discontent there since 2011. Five other people were wounded in the city of Qaladize following a week of strikes and demonstrations that threaten to shake Kurdistan’s stability while it is at war with Islamic State militants. The protests are being fueled by an economic crisis that has left the Kurdistan regional government unable to pay employees’ salaries. Friday’s demonstration turned violent when protesters headed towards the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Qaladize, the two officials said. “The firing came from the KDP,” said Hawsar Wshyar Mohammed Amin, a member of the Sulaimaniyah provincial council from former opposition party Gorran. “The protest is ongoing and it’s going in a dangerous direction.” But Hamid Qaladizei, a member of the KDP branch in the city, denied they had opened fire on stone-throwing protesters and said they were not to blame for the man’s death. “We acted very responsibly,” Qaladizei said. “There are people behind these protesters who are provoking. At issue is a passage tucked away in ancillary paperwork attached to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, as the Iran nuclear deal is formally known. Specifically, Section 5.1.2 of Annex II provides that in exchange for Iranian compliance with the terms of the deal, the U.S. “shall…license non-U.S. entities that are owned or controlled by a U.S. person to engage in activities with Iran that are consistent with this JCPOA.” In short, this means that foreign subsidiaries of U.S. parent companies will, under certain conditions, be allowed to do business with Iran. The problem is that the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act (ITRA), signed into law by President Obama in August 2012, was explicit in closing the so-called “foreign sub” loophole.

Headline:  Taliban seizes 2 more districts in Afghan north

The Taliban overran two more districts in northern Afghanistan, this time in the province of Faryab, where the jihadist group made a push to seize the capital just last weekend. The Taliban said it seized control of the districts of Garziwan and Pashtun Kot in two separate statements that were released on Voice of Jihad, the group’s official propaganda outlet. “Mujahideen of Islamic Emirate have managed to completely liberated [sic] Khwaja Musa district [Pashtun Kot] administration center, police HQ building and all the surrounding areas during a large scale operation,” the first statement said. “14 enemy check posts were overrun, forcing the enemy to flee while leaving behind 4 dead bodies and 2 APC wreckages.” The Taliban later stated that it “liberated [the] Garzewan administration center, police HQ building and all the surrounding buildings around 05:30 pm local time today” after launching an offensive yesterday. The Taliban’s claims were largely confirmed in Afghan press reports. Pajhwok Afghan News reported yesterday that the attack in Garziwan was executed by “hundreds of Taliban fighters, led by Mullah Shoib, Mullah Ahmad Shah, Qari Jailan and a Pakistani Sheikh,” and the Taliban advanced to within 4 kilometers of the district center as Afghan political leaders fled. By today, “Taliban fighters captured more parts of Garziwan and Pashtun Kot districts” while “security personnel said they had tactically vacated the areas,” Pajhwok reported. The fall of the districts of Garziwan and Pashtun Kot took place just one week after the Taliban attempted to seize control of Maimana, the provincial capital of Faryab. The two districts are on the outskirts of Maimana, and control access from the east.

Two civilians were killed and another three wounded after two suicide bombers stormed a restaurant in central capital Kabul on Thursday night, the spy service said. The National Directorate of Security (NDS) said the attack in the limits of the third police district involved two suicide bombers laced with light and heavy weapons and hand-grenades. Soon after entering the restaurant, the two opened indiscriminate firing at dining guests, injuring five people, the NDS said in a statement. Two of the injured people later succumbed to their injuries, the statement said, adding some NDS officials, who visited the restaurant for dinner, shot dead the two attackers. But a security official told Pajhwok Afghan News one of the attackers first shot and killed a security guard of the restaurant “Kalba Sulah” and then both entered the building, starting firing at the guests. The Kabul police headquarters also confirmed the attack, saying two persons had been killed.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir says he will repartition the country into 28 states, up from the current 10. Opponents say taking such unilateral action is a violation of the recently signed peace deal, and is the latest sticking point on the path to peace. Kiir says splitting South Sudan into 28 states will help reduce the size of the national government and distribute more resources to the rural population. But rebel leader and ousted vice president Riek Machar says the president should have consulted the opposition first, per the terms of a peace agreement signed in August to end nearly two years of fighting. The U.S. should urgently step up support to implement a peace accord in South Sudan that it played an “instrumental” role in creating, rebel leader Riek Machar said. The East African nation, which has sub-Saharan Africa’s third-biggest oil reserves, erupted in conflict in December 2013, pitting forces loyal to President Salva Kiir against fighters siding with Machar, his former deputy. The clashes have killed tens of thousands of people, displaced more than 2 million and cut crude production by at least a third. Faced with the threat of international sanctions, the two men in August signed a peace deal that envisages a cease-fire and 30-month power-sharing government in place by late November, followed by elections. Machar said the U.S. must remain engaged to ensure that the plan works. “We want to sensitize the U.S. that they shouldn’t leave us alone now, even with the democratization process,” he said in an interview in Washington on Thursday. “We want immediate support in the next 60 days.”

The U.N. Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution to authorize the European Union and individual countries to seize migrant-smuggling vessels on the high seas off Libya. “People cannot profit from this evil trade with impunity,” British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said. The resolution, negotiated off and on for months, is under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which means it can be militarily enforced. African members of the 15-member council had expressed concern about that. The resolution also authorizes the European Union and individual nations to board vessels “with a view to saving the threatened lives of migrants or of victims of human trafficking.” The International Organization for Migration says that more than 2,600 migrants have died in 2015 so far on the Central Mediterranean route that includes Libya. The resolution authorizes the search and seizure operation for one year. It says migrants “should be treated with humanity and dignity.” Council diplomats have said migrants on vessels that are searched and seized would be taken to Italy. The resolution underscores that the intention is not to prevent individuals from exercising their human rights or prevent them from seeking protection.

Headline: Yemeni pro-government forces retake key seaside town

Pro-government forces drove Shiite rebels from a strategic seaside town on Friday after three days of heavy clashes that killed nearly 100 fighters, Yemeni security officials said. Pro-government fighters have seized the town of Dhubab, cutting off rebel supply lines to Yemen’s third largest city, Taiz, said the officials, who remain neutral in the conflict that has splintered Yemen’s armed forces. Taiz is in government hands, but is besieged by Houthis. Securing Taiz would allow pro-government forces to push north toward the rebel-held capital, Sanaa. Pro-government fighters are also advancing on the nearby Red Sea port of Mocha, which is also along rebel supply lines to Taiz, Brig. Gen. Samir al-Haj told The Associated Press. In response, the Houthis deployed fighters to Turba, a largely abandoned town that leads to Taiz’s barely-defended southeastern areas, Houthis officials said. “It may be far off, but it is a way in” to the city, one Houthi official said. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief reporters.
