Headline:   Archaeologists say they’ve located the possible site of trial of Jesus

Archaeologists in Jerusalem say they may have uncovered the remains of Herod the Great’s palace, the site where the trial of Jesus Christ may have taken place prior to his crucifixion. The Washington Post reports that the remains are being opened to the public through tours organized by the Tower of David Museum, which is located close to the site. According to the paper, the remains of the palace were uncovered more than a decade ago by archaeologists who had been excavating an abandoned prison adjacent to the museum as part of a  planned expansion. Archaeologist Amit Re’em told the paper that among the uncovered remains were foundation walls and an underground sewage system that likely supported the palace. Historians and archaeologists say there’s little doubt that Herod’s palace was located on the western side of Jerusalem’s Old City, near the present-day museum. But the question of whether Jesus was actually examined there by the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate remains a contentious one. The confusion stems from various interpretations of the four New Testament Gospels, all of which describe the trial of Jesus. Supporters of Herod’s palace as the site point to the Gospel of John, which describes the trial as having taken place near a gate and on a stone pavement, details that would match archaeological interpretations of the site.

Headline:   Gaza war to be the first Palestinian ICC case

The first case the Palestinians will refer to the International Criminal Court will be Israel’s actions during this summer’s Gaza war, a legal expert said Sunday. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas opted to turn to the ICC after losing a motion last week in the UN Security Council to set a 2017 deadline for a Palestinian state to be established in land occupied by Israel in 1967. The Palestinians delivered to UN headquarters in New York on Friday documents on joining the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and other global treaties, saying they hoped to achieve “justice for all the victims that have been killed by Israel, the occupying power.” Membership of the Rome Statute would open the way for Palestinians to pursue criminal complaints in The Hague. Israel will not permit its soldiers to be hauled in front of the International Criminal Court on potential war crimes charges, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday. “We will not let Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and officers be dragged to the International Criminal Court in The Hague,” Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, two days after the Palestinians filed a controversial application to become a party to the court. “The Palestinian Authority has chosen to take a path of confrontation with Israel, and we will not sit idly by,” Netanyahu warned, vowing to defend Israeli military personnel from possible prosecution by the court. “IDF soldiers will continue to defend Israel with determination and strength — and as they defend us, we will defend them, with the same determination and the same strength,” Netanyahu said.

Headline:   Israel will ask Congress to stop US aid to Palestinians

Israel is poised to ask Congress to stop funding the Palestinian Authority, a day after the Israeli government froze NIS 500 million ($127 million) in Palestinian tax revenues collected on Ramallah’s behalf, in response to the Palestinian Authority filing a request to join the International Criminal Court earlier this week. An Israeli official said Sunday that Jerusalem will turn to pro-Israel Congress members to ensure that a law banning funds to the Palestinian Authority should it turn to the ICC be enforced, Haaretz reported. The Palestinians stand to lose some $400 million per year in US aid. The stop-gap funding bill passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama last month contains language that stipulates that no State Department economic support funding may be given to the PA if “the Palestinians initiate an International Criminal Court judicially authorized investigation, or actively support such an investigation, that subjects Israeli nationals to an investigation for alleged crimes against Palestinians.”

Headline:    Hamas ‘Totally Opposed’ to PA Statehood Bid

Hamas said Monday it was “totally opposed” to Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s plans to re-submit to the UN Security Council a resolution on forcing Israel to withdraw from Judea and Samaria. “Hamas is totally opposed to any return to the UN Security Council by the Palestinian Authority,” spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in a statement. “Such a step would be political foolishness which plays a dangerous game with the destiny of our nation.” “Mahmud Abbas and the leadership of the Palestinian Authority should completely stop this political foolishness,” Abu Zuhri said. On January 2, the Palestinian leadership decided to refile a draft resolution forcing a unilateral solution to the Israeli-Arab conflict. The draft had failed to pass a vote in the Security Council on December 30. Speaking to AFP, Abbas’s spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said the resolution would be presented again “soon,” without saying exactly when. The vote saw Security Council heavyweights China, France and Russia among eight countries who gave their support, while the United States and Australia voted against. Five other countries, including Britain, abstained – among them Nigeria which had been expected to vote in favor but changed its stance at the last minute.

Headline:   Israel Nabs ISIS Cell in Hebron

Israel’s military censor on Sunday cleared for publication the recent arrest of a terrorist cell claiming affiliation with the Islamic State (formerly ISIS) in the Judean town of Hebron. The Shabak (Israel’s equivalent of the FBI) worked together with the IDF in November to track and successfully arrest the terror cell, which was made up of Palestinian residents of Hebron. There were no injuries on either side in the raid. Security sources said the cell had been planning to attack a number of Israeli targets, both civilian and military. One specific plan involved the murder of an Israeli soldier and the use of his weapon and uniform to carry out a shooting attack against Israeli civilians.

Headline: Palestinians to ‘fully coordinate’ with Jordan on future moves

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Sunday discussed with his Palestinian counterpart Rami Hamdallah issues of mutual concern, mainly the failure of the Arab push to obtain a UN resolution setting a deadline for Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian lands. During the meeting, Hamdallah noted that any future Palestinian measures will be taken after full coordination and consultation with Jordan. Last week, the UN Security Council turned down a Palestinian draft resolution, endorsed by the Arab group at the UN and filed by Jordan, to end the Israeli occupation. The proposal failed to win the support of nine members to be placed for a vote. Later, Palestinians decided to join the International Criminal Court (ICC), where they can pursue their campaign for independence, a move that triggered Israel’s anger. The two officials also went over the Israeli decision to halt the transfer of tax revenues to the Palestinians following their ICC bid.

Headline:   Al-Nusra Front Publishes Pictures of Attack on Hezbollah and Syrian Army in Qalamoun

The Syrian army backed by Hezbollah regained control over the weekend of a key position in Qalamoun near the border with Lebanon in the fiercest bout of fighting since the Syrian military and its allies took over villages and towns in the area, security sources told The Daily Star. The sources expected similar rebel attacks to increase with worsening weather conditions. “Militants will become even more hostile as it gets colder because they look for supply lines,” one source said. Four Hezbollah fighters and five Syrian army soldiers were killed in the clashes Saturday, while more than 30 jihadis were killed, the sources said. Media reports said Ali Bakri and Fadel Abbas of Hezbollah were killed during the fighting. The sources said militants initially overran a strategic Hezbollah position in the Syrian village of Flita located 5 km away from the border with Lebanon, leading to violent clashes. However, Hezbollah soon regained the post.

Headline:    Sunnis, Shiites in Lebanon to join forces against Israel: Hezbollah official

Lebanon’s resistance, led by the powerful Shiite movement Hezbollah, will be joined by thousands of Sunnis in the next confrontation with Israel, a Hezbollah official said Sunday. “Hezbollah’s response to Israel’s bet on Sunni-Shiite strife is this: The resistance is preparing for the next war with Israel, and thousands of our Sunni brothers in Lebanon will be among the ranks [of the] resistance,” Hezbollah’s Executive Council chief Sheikh Nabil Qaouk said during a Hezbollah ceremony in Sidon. Jihadi terrorism, according to Qaouk, should not be seen as a phenomenon that targets Shiites and bypasses Sunnis since many Sunnis have been killed by across the region. “Takfiris are not in a place of representing Sunnis, but instead they are in a place of animosity against Sunnis and Shiites alike,” he said. The Hezbollah official expressed beliefs that terrorists still have their eye on Lebanon as an extension of their “emirate,” arguing that they are planning to use Lebanon’s border regions for future attacks.

Saudi-ArabiaSaudi Arabia

Headline:  Saudi Arabia to reopen Baghdad embassy after 25-year chill

A Saudi delegation will travel to Baghdad in the coming week to start preparations to reopen an embassy in the Iraqi capital for the first time in 25 years, official Saudi media said on Saturday. A thaw in the once chilly relations between Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia and Shi’ite-led Iraq could help strengthen a regional alliance against Islamic State militants who have seized territory in Iraq and Syria. Saudi Arabia closed its Baghdad embassy in 1990 after the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. It has long accused Iraq of being too close to Shi’ite Iran, its main regional rival, and of encouraging sectarian discrimination against Sunnis, a charge Baghdad denies. The Saudi move would help return Iraq to the Arab nation “after an absence since the toppling of the Saddam Hussein regime and the penetration of the Iranian regime into the joints of the Iraqi state,” said Abdullah al-Askar, head of the foreign affairs committee on Saudi Arabia’s Shoura Council, which advises the government on policy.

At least two Saudi border guards, including a senior officer, have been killed and a third wounded in a shooting and bomb attack on the kingdom’s border with Iraq, where the ISIL Takfiri militants have seized a swathe of territory. The Saudi Interior Ministry said in a statement released on Monday that the attack took place in the Swiff crossing in the Arar region when unidentified attackers shot at a border patrol. One of the assailants was captured and blew his explosives, the brief statement added. One of those killed in the assault was a senior officer, the ministry’s spokesman Major General Mansour Turki said without giving his name. The officer was named by local media as General Oudah al-Belawi. Arar region borders Iraq’s volatile Anbar province, where the ISIL have been actively operating.

Egyptian security sources say at least four police officers have sustained injuries after an improvised explosive device went off in the violence-scarred Sinai Peninsula of the North African country.   The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the explosive charge had been planted at the entrance to an apartment building, and detonated in the city of el-Arish, situated 344 kilometers (214 miles) northeast of the capital, Cairo, on Monday. Separately, unknown assailants attacked a security checkpoint in Cairo’s upscale al-Mohandeseen district late on Sunday, killing one civilian and injuring three policemen. The attackers fled the scene following the drive-by shooting. No group has claimed responsibility for the act of violence, The development came a day after Egyptian military forces killed seven militants and arrested 15 others during separate operations in the volatile Sinai.

Responding to growing pressure from Sunni Islamist rebels, Syrian regime takes drastic decision to try to beat them at their own game. As if things weren’t bloody enough in Syria’s four-year civil war: The Syrian army has announced the formation of a platoon of suicide bombers, to counter the ever-growing threat of Sunni jihadis including ISIS and Al Qaeda’s Nusra Front. A video released at the end of December and translated by MEMRI shows an announcement by half a dozen men calling themselves “the commandos of the Mountain Battalion,” declaring their new “martyrdom-seeking platoon.” Strapped with explosives and standing behind a copy of the Koran, a message is read out by one of the masked men who says that their platoon was formed in “response to all the foreigners who have distorted the religion of Islam, and have defiled the soil of our country.”

Syria Headline:   US-led warplanes target jihadi oil pipeline in Syria

U.S. and coalition aircraft Sunday targeted a crude oil pipeline and collection depots in Syria held by ISIS jihadis, the American military said, in the latest bid to undercut the group’s oil smuggling. Allied fighter jets and bombers carried out 14 air raids near the eastern city of Deir Al-Zor since Sunday morning, including six strikes on five crude oil collection points, a pipeline, armored vehicles and a shipping container, the U.S. military said in a statement. The U.S.-led coalition on Sunday also conducted eight bombing runs near the northern town of Kobani, targeting ISIS troops that have waged a months-long battle to seize the area near the Turkish border. In Iraq, American and allied fighter jets carried out six airstrikes on Sunday against ISIS in the north and west, including two raids near the Al-Asad air base where U.S. military advisers are deployed.

Syria Headline:  Fighters seize Damascus suburb from rivals: NGO

Fighters seized a suburb east of Damascus on Sunday after driving out a smaller rival insurgent group in deadly clashes, a monitoring group said, the latest example of rebel infighting in Syria’s nearly four-year conflict. Fighters from the Army of Islam clashed with members of the Army of the Nation group in Douma, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Both groups militants opposed to President Bashar Al Assad’s government, and the fighting is seen as more of a turf war than a conflict over ideology.
The Observatory, which gathers information from a network of sources in Syria, said several fighters were killed, without giving details. It added that the Army of Islam had detained many of its rival combatants.

Headline:  France Calls for Lifting Russia Sanctions if Progress on Ukraine

French President Francois Hollande is calling for sanctions on Russia to be lifted if there is progress in Ukraine. During a two-hour radio interview, Hollande said sanctions imposed by Europe and the United States had not only hit Russia hard, but were also hurting the European economy. But there must be no new sanctions – and those in place should be lifted if there is progress on Ukraine, he added. There will be an opportunity for that next week, when Ukraine’s Petro Poroshenko and Russia’s Putin are scheduled to hold talks in Kazakhstan. Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have been invited to join them at the meeting, to be held January 15 in Astana.

Headline:  Will crashing oil prices make Russia, Iran and Venezuela more dangerous?

The plummeting price of oil is giving the economies of Russia, Iran and Venezuela a strong smack upside the head. And while the resulting crises before Russian President Vladimir Putin, the ruling clerics in Iran and the successor to Hugo Chavez in Venezuela won’t engender much sympathy from many corners of the world, what those leaders may do in response has a number of foreign policy analysts worried. “With the oil situation, things can go in a lot of different ways,” Stephen Szabo, executive director of the Transatlantic Academy, told Watchdog.org. “The leadership in these countries is not exactly responsive to their people and they could lash out.” All three countries rely on high oil prices to keep their governments afloat. A recent estimate by the International Monetary Fund, Deutsche Bank and Fitch Rankings reported Russia needs the global oil price at $98 a barrel to cover its budgetary expenditures. Venezuela’s “break even” price is about $117.50 a barrel and Iran’s is even higher — $130.70.

A suicide car bomber struck near the headquarters of the European police training mission in Kabul on Monday, killing one Afghan civilian and wounding five others nearby, police and EUPOL said, Al Arabiya reported. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, the first against a foreign target in the Afghan capital in 2015. According to a statement from the EUPOL mission, the driver of the car packed with explosives apparently targeted a convoy of mission vehicles near its headquarters on the eastern outskirts of Kabul in the early afternoon. “The vehicle’s occupants were uninjured,” EUPOL said on its Facebook page. The mission funds and trains Afghanistan’s 157,000-strong police force. The spokesman for the Kabul police chief, Hashmat Stanekzai confirmed the casualties. A separate explosion struck near Kabul’s international airport earlier on Monday, leaving no casualties.

Headline:  At least six die in South Sudan fighting: rebels

At least six civilians have died in fighting in South Sudan in the past two days, rebels said, and both rebels and the government accused one another of planning a return to full-blown conflict after a lull in the rainy season. South Sudan military spokesman Philip Aguer said government forces were expecting another round of attacks in oil-producing Unity State, and Upper Nile State, which experienced fighting in recent days. He said fighters allied to Machar had staged attacks on Saturday near Bentiu, Unity state’s capital. “The SPLA forces in those areas are monitoring preparation of Riek Machar forces to wage attacks possible within this coming week,” Aguer told Reuters. Rebel military spokesman Lul Ruai Koang on Saturday accused government troops, police and pro-government militia of a series of attacks in the past two days in Unity and Upper Nile States in which at least six civilians were killed. The government denied that it had caused any deaths.

Headline:  Islamic State kills 14 Libyan soldiers, official government says

Military jets have attacked a Greek-operated oil tanker in the Libyan port of Derna, killing two crew members, the Greek authorities have said. The attack, on Sunday, was carried out by the Libyan air force after the ship’s movements aroused suspicion, a Libyan military spokesman told the BBC. Derna has been controlled by Islamist militants for the past two years. The Libyan military attacked the port several times last year in an attempt to weaken militant groups there. The military spokesman, Colonel Ahmed Mesmari, said the tanker had been targeted because it had failed to submit to an inspection before entering the port. He said the vessel was supposed to dock at a power plant in Derna but instead “took a different route”, entering a “military zone”. “We asked the ship to stop, but instead it turned off all its lights and would not respond so we were obliged to strike it. “We bombed it twice,” he said.

Headline:     Spectre of Isis used to erode rights in Morocco

The 100 or so activists gather in front of the Moroccan parliament at dusk. They chant slogans demanding freedom and greater civil liberties in a scene that would be unimaginable in almost any other Arab country. “We have a kind of a freedom,” says Mohammed Rachid el-Mouewouine, an environment ministry employee attending the small rally. “We can have a demonstration like this. We can express ourselves.” But many worry such modest freedoms, won by civil society and human rights activists in fits and starts over the years, are being eroded as the country’s security forces use the threat of rising regional instability and the resurgence of jihadi groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or Isis, to restrict the country’s political space. “Though . . . the group has no real presence here, the Moroccan government has used the Isis issue repeatedly,” says one analyst at an international organisation. “The government has made multiple arrests of recruitment networks, but there is no sign of any armed group on the ground connected to Isis.” Activists lament growing public apathy about democratic reform, triggered in large part by the rise of Isis and the regional conflicts that populate television news broadcasts. Over 2,000 Moroccan men are believed to have joined Isis, along with hundreds more fighters of Moroccan descent residing in Europe.

Headline:    Germany Pegida Marches: Thousands Of German Counter-Protesters Expected To March Against Anti-Islamic Group

Thousands across four German cities plan to counter-protest against growing anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim marches that have drawn thousands to the streets, reports the Associated Press. Most of the anti-immigration protesters are part of Pegida, or Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West, a group that has attracted far-right extremists and nationalists. Counter-protesters were expected to hold rallies Monday in Berlin, Stuttgart, Dresden and Cologne. The Cologne Cathedral, one of the largest in the world, announced on Friday it would turn off all of its normally bright exterior lights in protest of the Pegida marches there, according to the Independent. Pegida began drawing attention in October, when their marches numbered in the hundreds. The group has now held multiple rallies in the thousands, attracting an eclectic group of Germans with differing political stances. The common thread among them is the strong opposition to immigrants coming to Germany for asylum from troubled areas of the world. Around 10,000 anti-Pegida marchers are expected in Berlin, and about half that many in Stuttgart. It is unclear how many will gather in Dresden, which has been a hub of ultra-right-wing activity. Small groups in the hundred have gathered there during past Pegida rallies to counter-protest. Chancellor Angela Merkel asked Germans in her New Years Address to reject Pegida’s stance and welcome those coming to Germany for safety from war-torn countries like Syria and Libya. She denounced Pegida’s leaders of fomenting “prejudice, coldness and hatred.”

Headline:    Turkish soldier missing on Syrian border: army

A Turkish soldier has gone missing during an anti-smuggling operation on the border with Syria, the army said Monday, amid press reports he may have been kidnapped. Ozgur Ors, a non-commissioned officer, went missing on Thursday after he crossed the border into Syria from the southeastern Turkish province of Kilis in an operation to capture a group of smugglers. In a statement quoted by the Turkish media, the army confirmed Ors was missing but said there was still no news on the fate of the soldier. “A thorough investigation is under way. But a cross-border operation has not taken place,” it said, adding that the Turkish intelligence agency MIT was also joining the efforts. There was speculation in the press Monday that the soldier might have been kidnapped by ISIS militants who have seized swathes of Iraq and Syria, or another militant group.

Headline:  Boko Haram seizes army base in Nigeria town of Baga

The militant group Boko Haram has seized a town and key multinational military base in north-eastern Nigeria, officials and eyewitnesses say. A senator in Borno state said troops had abandoned the base in the town of Baga after it was attacked on Saturday. Residents of Baga, who fled by boat to neighbouring Chad, said many people had been killed and the town set ablaze. Residents who fled to Chad said they had woken to heavy gunfire as militants stormed Baga early on Saturday, attacking from all directions. They said they had decided to flee when they saw the multi-national troops running away. One unnamed resident of the town described what had happened for the BBC: “Yesterday at around 05:00 [04:00 GMT] we were woken up by heavy gunshots, and we couldn’t identify where the shots were coming from. “They came through the north, the west and from the southern part of the town because the eastern part is only water. So, when we [went] towards the western part, we saw heavily armed Boko Haram men coming towards us. “The soldiers were trying to repel the attack but that wasn’t going to happen because a lot of the soldiers were without their guns and some were running into the town. When you see soldiers running away into the town – what are you to do, other than to just run away as well?”

A Somali police officer says a suicide car bomber blew himself up near a moving convoy of Somalia’s U.S.-trained elite forces in Mogadishu, killing at least four people. Capt. Mohamed Hussein says the attacker drove his bomb-laden car into a convoy of troops on the airport road in the capital on Sunday. He said most of the casualties were pedestrians walking along the road. The Alpha Group troops, who are part of Somalia’s intelligence forces, often carry out operations against militants in Somalia. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Somali militant group al-Shabab is waging an insurgency against Somalia’s government. The blast comes days after a U.S. airstrike killed al-Shabab’s intelligence chief, Abdishakur Tahlil.

Headline:  Unidentified gunmen attack army base in eastern Mali, kill 5

Unidentified gunmen in Mali have killed at least five people in an attack on an army base in Nampala City near the Mauritanian border. According to a source in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) on Monday, attackers slipped into a camp belonging to the Malian army “with relative ease” about 0615 GMT and opened fire on the soldiers. The UN source added that the identities of those killed have not been ascertained so far. The clashes, which lasted for more than three and a half hours, also left two Malian soldiers injured. A Malian Defense Ministry spokesman confirmed the deadly clashes in Nampala, saying, “Our positions were attacked early this morning…. We confronted the enemy and reinforcements are now being sent from a neighboring area to Nampala.” The Nampala fighting came a day after gunmen killed six MINUSMA soldiers in the northeast of the country. Chaos broke out in Mali after President Amadou Toumani Toure was toppled in a military coup on March 22, 2012. The coup leaders said they mounted the coup in response to the government’s inability to contain the rebellion in the country’s north. The rebels are fighting to gain autonomy in the northern region of Mali.

Headline:  Police, protesters clash in Bahrain over opposition leader’s detention

Bahraini police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to scatter protesters who gathered outside the home of a Shi’ite Muslim opposition leader on Monday, witnesses said, after he was remanded in custody for a further 15 days. Around 100 protesters angry at the decision had assembled outside his house in the Manama suburb of Bilad al-Qadeem calling for his immediate release, according to a Reuters eyewitness, and clashes with police ensued. Authorities were not available for comment on the fresh outbreak of sectarian tension in the Sunni Muslim-ruled, Gulf Arab kingdom, a close ally of the United States which bases its Fifth Fleet there as a bulwark against Iran across the Gulf. Sheikh Ali Salman, head of the al-Wefaq Islamic Society, was arrested on Dec. 28 after leading a protest rally against elections that were held in November and which his party boycotted, prompting U.S. criticism. Late on Sunday, Salman’s lawyer, Abdulla al-Shamlawi, told Reuters that he had been charged by the public prosecutor with inciting a change of government by force, inciting hatred of a segment of society, inciting others to break the law and publicly insulting the Interior Ministry. “The secretary general of a political society shall be detained for 15 more days pending investigation,” the official Twitter account of Bahrain’s Public Prosecution said. It did not name Salman. After a U.S. State Department statement on Thursday criticizing Salman’s detention, saying this would further stoke tensions, Bahraini authorities denounced what they called foreign double standards and interference.

Headline:   India, Pakistan step up border fighting ahead of Kerry visit

Indian and Pakistani troops intensified cross-border firing Monday, killing an Indian border guard and forcing hundreds of villagers to flee, escalating tensions before visits by top U.S. officials. India said four Pakistanis planning an attack on Indian soil were killed, although Indian media and opposition parties disputed the official account. The Pakistani army confirmed two civilian deaths from Indian shelling. Monday’s incident, in the Samba district south of Jammu along the international border in Jammu and Kashmir, followed the killing of four Pakistani soldiers by their Indian counterparts on New Year’s Eve. A senior Indian official with the border security force said they had retaliated against machine gun and mortar attacks on about 60 positions along a more than 200 km stretch of the border on Monday. “Pakistani rangers fired rocket propelled grenades in villages near the border and our men have responded,” the officer told Reuters.

Headline:  Euro at its weakest since 2006 after Draghi drops QE hint

The euro tumbled to its lowest level against the dollar in nearly nine years on Sunday night amid mounting fears that Greece could exit the eurozone. The sharp slide came as Asian markets accelerated a sell-off sparked on Friday, when Mario Draghi gave his strongest hint ever that the European Central Bank was ready to launch quantitative easing to tackle the threat of deflation. In a separate, though disputed, report in Der Spiegel on Friday, claimed that Angela Merkel’s government in Germany now believes the eurozone could handle a Greek exit, piling even more pressure on the single currency. The German government has since countered that it is confident Greece will stick to the bailout terms set out by the EU and the IMF. Georg Streiter, a spokesman for Mrs Merkel, refused to comment on reports that she believes the eurozone is now robust enough to cope with the potential exit of Greece should the looming general election in Greece reignite the eurozone crisis.

It seems like it was only yesterday when we reported that, in yet another sleight of hand for the US Treasury and Social Security Administration, US debt rose by $32 billion on the last day of November sending total US debt above $18 trillion for the first time ever.  As we further noted, it also meant “that total US debt has increased by 70% under Obama, from $10.625 trillion on January 21, 2009 to $18.005 trillion most recently.” Fast forward to today when we are happy to report that according to the US Treasury, America’s debt-funded spending spree, while supposedly slowing down if looking at the declining monthly budget deficit report, never actually has. As of the last day of 2014, total US debt soared by $98 billion in one day (driven again by Social Security debt surging on the last day of the month to a record $5.117 trillion), and closing off 2014 with a new all time high total of $18.141 trillion in Federal debt – an increase of $136 billion in the month of December and $790 billion for all of 2014.

The CDC says it’s never seen anything like it before, and it’s already claimed a life in the U.S. A new virus thought to be carried by ticks or other insects has been discovered following the death of a southeast Kansas resident during the summer, public health officials said Monday. The new virus is called Bourbon virus, after Bourbon County, home of the patient who died. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the patient’s symptoms, including fever and fatigue, were similar to symptoms from other tick-borne diseases. The Kansas health department said testing by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the patient had a virus not previously identified. Health department spokeswoman Aimee Rosenow said it’s still not clear how much the Bourbon virus contributed to the patient’s death. “This was the first known instance and the only confirmed case,” Rosenow said. “This is a new virus, and we are still learning.”

Headline: Scores of GIANT asteroids on course to hurtle past Earth within the month, NASA reveals

Some are more than 1km wide and threaten devastating consequences if they were to strike our planet. Of almost 70 asteroids on the radar most are around 100 metres wide, the size of a double decker bus, and would be capable of causing significant damage. Experts warn if one of these monsters, some of which travel at up to 70,000 miles an hour, were to hit Earth it could “alter life as we know it”. Plumes of debris thrown into the atmosphere would change the climate making the planet inhabitable for all life including humans. An impact would still be catastrophic destroying cities and knocking out transport and communication networks. According to NASA’s Near Earth Object Programme, there are 68 ‘close approaches’ forecast before the end of next month The next, due on January 3, is the 490-metre wide 2005 YQ96 asteroid  currently hurtling through space at more than 30,000 miles per hour. The biggest to skim the planet will be the mile-wide 2007 EJ asteroid due to throttle past on January 12th at 34,500 miles per hour. Experts say although it is unlikely any of these will hit the Earth, there is always a chance they may veer off course or explode showering the planet with debris.

Headline:  Idaho suffers millions in property damage following earthquake

A moderate earthquake shook a large area of Idaho early Saturday, causing millions in property damage and cutting off power to residents near its epicenter in Challis. The city has experienced hundreds of slight to moderate temblors over the past 10 months, authorities said, but Saturday’s tremor was the strongest since 1983. The quake measured at a magnitude of 4.9 and was located about 6.5-kilometres from Challis in the state’s central mountains. The tremor was felt as far away as Boise, however, 305-kilometres to the southwest, the US Geological Survey said. The quake caused rockslides, damaged homes and knocked out power around Custer County, local officials reported. Challis Mayor Mark Lupher told journalists that there were no known injuries. Several people living close to the epicenter reported property damage such as cracks in the walls of their homes, he said.

New in and year out the nation of Israel is a target for one nation or another. 2014, Israel was again the center of many news agencies writing about those who are calling for the destruction of the nation of Israel. Of course what is being reported flows with the prophecies concerning Israel.  As a watch men for Christ I have reported on those who would like to see Israel disappear and, today one day before we enter into a new year we again see another report on the nation of Israel disappearing from the map.  If you haven’t read my prophecy book below today’s report I show you some other news reports from the past who in like manner has already erased Israel from the map.  Keep in mind, this is the mind set of most of the Middle East nations but this taught is growing around the world and, soon Israel will in fact be alone just as the prophecy warns us.  This new information has been added to my book.
Leading Publishing House Wipes Israel Off Its Map
Map of Israel, Middle East (illustration)

One of the world’s largest publishing houses is distributing school Atlases inMiddle Eastern countries which totally erase any reference to the State of Israel, it has been revealed. HarperCollins’ subsidiary Collins Bartholomew, which specializes in maps, are selling “Collins Middle East Atlases” to English-speaking schools in the Gulf states which depict Jordan and Syria extending all the way to the Mediterranean Sea. Collins Bartholomew told The Tablet that the reason they wiped Israel off their maps was that including the Jewish state would be “unacceptable” to their customers in the Gulf states. They added that the change to remove Israel was meant to incorporate “local preferences” – apparently the local preference that Israel not exist.

map

I believe the United Nations, have sent a message to Israel, and the world showing what they think Israel will be like in the near future?   A Project of the Hudson Institute New York reveals a map of Palestine on their web page, which the UN put on display.   I quote what the Hudson Institute says about the map above. “This is the prominent UN public display which was used to mark the commemoration of “International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People” on November 29, 2005. The Palestinian flag is on one side. The UN flag is on the other side. A map without the UN member state of Israel stands between them”. “This map was prominently displayed by the UN on November 29, 2005 at a public gathering at UN Headquarters, in the presence of all top three UN officials, the Secretary General, and the Presidents of the UN Security Council and the General Assembly. It purports to be a “map of Palestine.” Israel, a UN member state for 56 years, is not on the map. Even the UN General Assembly partition lines of November 29, 1947 marking a Jewish and Arab state, which pre-date this 1948 map, do not appear”. The report goes on to state, “As the “map of Palestine” without the state of Israel stands in the background, Secretary-General Kofi Annan addresses the public meeting at UN Headquarters. The anniversary of the UN partition vote that survivors of the concentration camps celebrated, has been described by Secretary-General Annan as “a day of mourning and a day of grief.” Palestinians, and Arab citizens more generally, refer to it as part of “Al-Nakba,” meaning the “catastrophe” of the creation of the state of Israel” (EYEontheUN.org ).

Egypt has just done the same thing concerning wiping Israel off the map. Since February of 2011, Egypt has taken steps that show us that she is lining up with the nations in Psalm 83, and is taking her place to fulfill prophecy. In Psalm 83:4, it says the following: “They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from [being] a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.” As you now know the Hagarites, or Hagarenes, are the modern day Egyptians. They are listed as one of the nations who will be joining a number of Arab nations, that border Israel, in the Psalm 83 war.   News from Israel on March 23, 2011, shows a map without Israel. Since the Lord has already shown us the nations who will attack Israel  in Psalm 83, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone what type of message Egypt Air is sending by producing maps that eliminate Israel.  I quote, “Egypt Air, the largest airline in Egypt, has removed Israel from the map – literally. On its website, Ynet has learned, Jordan’s land reaches the Mediterranean Sea. The airline’s subsidiary, Air Sinai, flies to Israel regularly, but customers seeking flights to Ben Gurion National Airport will have a hard time finding them. On the map are the names of the Middle East capitals – Amman, Beirut, and Damascus – but Israel is nowhere to be found” (Ynet news, March 23, 2011).

Earthquake anim.gif (6792 bytes)  Luke 21:11 “And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from    heaven.”           In part of Mark 13:8 we read “There will be earthquakes in various places”.   Do you believe what Jesus says?  Go ahead and test Him to see if He tells the truth because if you put Him to the test you will learn the same thing so many before you have learned.  As far a quakes go keep your eyes on the news this new year and you will see the big quakes Jesus told us to look for.

Headline:    Meshaal on point of relocating Hamas’ political headquarters from Doha to Tehran

Hamas’ political leader Khaled Meshaak, forced to quit his old headquarters in Damascus after abandoning his longtime host Bashar Assad and finding sanctuary in Doha – is again being hounded from pillar to post. debkafile: A deal struck this week between Egypt and Qatar could result in the Hamas leader settling in the Iranian capital. This would afford Tehran a foothold in the Gaza Strip, its second Mediterranean outpost after Lebanon on the Israeli border. The Egyptian-Qatar deal, revealed here by debkafile’s Middle East sources, covers the future of the Muslim Brotherhood, the nemesis of Egyptian President Abdel-Fatteh El-Sisis, and its offspring, the Palestinian Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip. Their memorandum of understanding was concluded Wednesday, Dec. 24, in Cairo by a delegation of Qatari intelligence chiefs and the new Egyptian director of intelligence Gen. Khaled Fawzi. They spent most of the day hammering out its six points, which are listed here:

  1.  Qatar withdraws its support from all Brotherhood operations against Egypt and Saudi Arabia;
  2. This point applies equally to any Hamas activity that may be interpreted as inimical to Egypt;
    3.  Qatar’s assistance to Hamas will be limited to “civilian” projects (such as repairing war damage in Gaza), which too will be subject to President El-Sisi’s approval;
  3. Given the close cooperation maintained at present between the Egyptian president and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on affairs relating to Gaza, Israel will implicitly have the right to disqualify certain Palestinian projects in the enclave;
    5.  Qatar is to shut down the anti-Egyptian propaganda channel run by its Al Jazeera television station;
    6.  The emirate is not required to sever all its ties with the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, just to keep them under control as its “strategic reserve.”

Khaled Meshaal, after he was denied permission by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to set up shop in Istanbul, is on the point of a decision to relocate his offices in Tehran. Iran would thus gain a proxy foothold in the Gaza Strip, its second outpost on the Mediterranean after the first was provided by Hizballah in Lebanon. If Meshaal decided to settle in Tehran, Iran would acquire a handy springboard for action against Egypt and southern Israel.

Headline:   IDF fire on Palestinians protesting near border fence with Gaza

Gaza protests turns violent as group nears border with Israel, begins to throw stones; no injuries reported. The IDF has reportedly opened fire on a group of Palestinian protesters who approached the border fence between Gaza Strip and Israel. The incident, which has not yet been confirmed by the IDF, followed reports of a Hamas-backed protest held earlier in Gaza decring the Israeli-Egyptian blockade on Gaza. The march was attended by Hamas’ Gaza leader Isamil Haniyeh who demanded the world free Gaza from the siege. According to Palestinian reports, a group of protesters neared the Erez Crossing border terminal, crossing the Palestinian checkpoint from the Gazan side of the border. Once they neared the Israeli crossing, they began throwing stones, prompting the IDF to fire in the air. On Friday, IDF forces shot at two Palestinians who came close to crossing the security fence in northern Gaza. One of the men who passed the fence suffered a light to moderate wound to his leg, and the other suspect retreated back to Gaza. An IDF soldier was seriously wounded Wednesday after an IDF patrol convoy sustained sniper fire near the southern Gaza Strip around noon, prompting the army to return fire into Gaza, in the most serious escalation along the southern border since a violent 50-day summer conflict ended.

Headline:  Hamas Leaders Slam Senior Palestinian Authority Gaza Visit, UN Draft Bid

A final draft of a U.N. resolution calling for an end to Israeli’s occupation of Palestinian territory by the end of 2017 was expected to be submitted to the U.N. Security Council Monday. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told senior Fatah party leaders on Monday the resolution would be submitted later that day. Although a vote could take place as early as Tuesday, Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told the Ma’an news agency that a vote could be delayed until the new year. “This process will take more than a day or two, and we must be clear with our people in order to avoid a state of confusion stemming from the numerous statements, which are sometimes contradictory.” Hamas on Sunday urged the Palestinian Authority to withdraw the draft resolution, arguing that “it contains massive concessions” and “does not reflect the national desire of our people.” The U.S., a veto power on the Security Council, has expressed reticence to support the resolution, calling instead for a negotiated solution between Israeli and Palestinian parties.

Headline:   PA Says it Has Majority Needed for UN Statehood Resolution

Reports France, Luxembourg have decided to support PA bid at UNSC; move could force US to use its veto. The Palestinian Authority is claiming it has the necessary nine-vote majority to enable it to pass a resolution through the UN Security Council calling for recognition of a “Palestinian state” as well as an Israeli withdrawal from Judea, Samaria and “East Jerusalem”. The vote is due to take place tonight (Tuesday) at 10 p.m. GMT, after the PA about-faced on its prior plans to postpone the vote until after the new year. As recently as Monday PA foreign minister Riyad Al-Maliki had indicated that the vote would be postponed until after the new year, after the vote was put off last Friday and again on Monday. Diplomatic sources had claimed the resolution would flop due to a lack of support by the council’s 15 members. But according to Channel Two, France and Luxembourg have now decided to vote for the resolution, tipping the balance in the PA’s favor. If true it would force the US – which has stated its firm opposition to such unilateral measures – to use its veto at the Security council. That move could provoke tensions with some of America’s Arab allies in the UN.

Headline:  Islamic State magazine features interview with captured Jordanian pilot

The US military is going to great lengths to deny any evidence that ISIS shot down the Jordanian Air Force F-16 which came down Wednesday, Dec. 24 over the northern Syrian town of Raqaa. First Lieutenant Muath al-Kasaesbeh, aged 27, was the first Arab pilot to be taken prisoner by the Islamic State. The US Central Command statement said: “We can say with certainty that it was an aircraft crash and the plane was not downed by ISIL as was claimed by the terrorist organization.” This contradicted an earlier statement by the Jordanian Information Minister Mohammad Momani that the plane had crashed after being hit by a ground-air missile. debkafile’s military and intelligence sources add that Middle East military and aviation control centers are quite sure that the Jordanian warplane was hit by an ISIS missile, while making low passes over the terrorist organization’s Syrian headquarters at Raqqa in violation of the pilot’s orders. The Jordanians are making intense efforts to deter the jihadis from harming 1st Lt. Kasaesbeh. The Hashemite Kingdom’s armed forces warned that “IS and its supporters would be held responsible for the pilot’s safety and his life.” ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi has not doubt calculated his stake in keeping the Jordanian pilot alive and at risk to scare fellow Arab pilots from continuing to take part in US-led bombing missions against his forces. Furthermore, the Bararsha, like other South Jordanian Bedouin tribes, is known around the region for producing fierce fighters and their relentless pursuit of blood revenge. Al Baghdadi may opt to avoid antagonizing them for this reason, as well as in the hope of a tangible benefit: ISIS is already using the smuggling routes of southern Jordan as channels to the groups his organization has planted in Sinai, Egypt and eastern Libya. He may decide to go one better and build an alliance with those very tribes behind the backs of the Americans and Jordan’s Abdullah II. Such an eventuality would add a new dimension to the war on the Islamist terrorists.

Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah is reportedly mediating between Hamas on the one hand and Iran and Syria on the other in order to patch up the alliance that has been damaged due to the war in Syria. The reconciliation efforts were reported on Saturday in the Lebanese newspaper As-Safir.  According to a senior official, Nasrallah is playing a key role in the mediation effort which is also being encouraged by Tehran, that is planning to invite Hamas Political Bureau Chief Khaled Mashaal to the Iranian capital. Possible signs of the mediation could also be seen from Gaza, where in a ceremony earlier this month marking 27 years since the founding of the Islamist movement, Abu Ubaida the spokesman for the Kassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, recognized Iran’s role in supporting the Palestinian resistance.

Lebanese soldiers fired into the air to disperse a protest on Monday against security measures near a town close to the Syrian border, a security source and the state news agency reported. State news agency NNA said three youths had been wounded and others arrested after a confrontation with the army in a valley outside Arsal, a town in Lebanon that has been drawn into neighboring Syria’s civil war. The army has increased security measures around the town since the summer, saying it wants to protect residents from militant groups originating in Syria who are trying to expand land they control into Lebanon. Islamic State and Al Qaeda’s Nusra Front — Sunni Muslim groups fighting in Syria — attacked Arsal in August and took a group of Lebanese soldiers captive.

An estimated 15,000 men, women and children took to the streets of eastern Saudi Arabia on Sunday evening to attend the funeral of four people killed by security forces in the village of Awamiyah. Funeral goers chanted “down, down al-Saud” in a reference to the ruling family and “we will protect our people by any means” while carrying photos of the dead, according to locals from the Shiite majority Eastern Province. “People are angry. They want revenge for those killed,” Mohammed al-Saeedi, who attended the funerals on Sunday, told MEE. Syria Headline:  Nusra looks to maintain gains in Idlib

The Nusra Front is seeking to press ahead with military gains in northwest Idlib province in Syria by seizing Abu Dhuhur airport from regime forces and has given soldiers one week to defect from the facility. But Nusra’s hard-line behavior is also generating tension with local residents in Idlib, who demonstrated this weekend to demand the release of civilian detainees held by the Al-Qaeda affiliate. According to pro-Nusra media outlets, the group issued its ultimatum to military personnel in Abu Dhuhur Saturday, and said that two soldiers from the complex managed to flee their posts and turn themselves over to the jihadis. Several hundred military personnel are currently believed to be stationed at the airport. Earlier this month, Nusra and its local ally Jund al-Aqsa overran the sprawling Wadi Deif military base, also in Idlib province, in one of the biggest military setbacks for the regime this year.

Syria Headline:    Scores killed as opposition fighters launched new formation in Syria’s Aleppo

Two members of the pro-regime security forces were reportedly killed Sunday afternoon, during clashes with fighters from the newly formed rebel faction of al-Shamiya Front in the area of Khan Shooneh in the old city of Aleppo, in northern Syria. Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, civil rights activist Imad Hussein said that fighters from the Shamiya Front infiltrated the regime’s positions in the Khan Shooneh area near the ancient citadel of Aleppo. “This resulted in clashes between both sides, causing the death of at least two members of the pro-regime security forces,” Hussein reported quoting a commander from Shamiya Front. “No casualties were reported in the ranks of Shamiya Front.” The clashes came one day after the formation of the anti-Assad rebel group of the Shamiya Front where military commander Abu Bakr, in a videotape published online, declared to the Iranian militias –which fight on the side of the regime’s forces– to recognize the Syrian revolution and the Syrian people’s option. Among the most prominent factions working under the banner of the newly formed group of Shamiya Front are the Islamic Front, the Army of Mujahideen, Noureddin Zanki Movement, Fastaqim Kama Umirt battalion in addition to the Asala wa-Tanimiya Front. Meanwhile, two fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) were killed on Sunday during clashes with the forces of the regime, in the Ard al-Milah area in the northern suburb of Aleppo. This coincided with the bombardment of the al-Mwasalat and al-Shaar neighborhoods in Aleppo by the pro-Assad heavy artillery.

A government official says the death toll in a suicide bombing at a funeral north of Baghdad is now 15. An Interior Ministry spokesman says the bomber blew himself up inside a funeral tent in a farming area outside the mainly Sunni town of Taji, about 12 miles north of Baghdad. He said another 26 mourners were wounded in the attack. The funeral was for the father of two members of pro-government Sunni militias. The attack bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State group, which frequently targets Sunnis who are allied with the Shiite-led government.

Volunteer forces fighting against the ISIL Takfiri terrorists say US military aircraft have dropped weapons in areas held by the terrorist group in Iraq. American helicopters dropped boxes of weapons in Yathrib and Balad districts in Iraq’s Salahuddin Province, according to the fighters. The report comes as the Iraqi army and volunteer fighters appear to be gaining the upper hand and making significant gains against ISIL. In October, a video showed the terrorist group captured a bundle of US weapons airdropped in the Syrian border town of Kobani.

Iraq Headline:  IS claims another jet shot down over northern Iraq

The Islamic State (IS) claims to have shot down a plane in Northern Iraq, according to the group’s radio station. The al-Bayan radio station, which broadcasts on FM from the Iraqi city of Mosul, said on Sunday night that “fighters with the Islamic State air defence forces downed a bomber and took its pilot prisoner” just south of Tikrit. The nationality of the alleged prisoner is unknown and the reports have yet to be confirmed, coming on the heels of unverified claims that IS had killed seven US soldiers and downed two helicopters. The unconfirmed reports were circulated widely on Twitter and reported by a number of Arabic news sites including Arabi21. A hashtag created to share the news, ‘Islamic State Kills 7 US soldiers and downs 2 helicopters’, has created over 50,000 impressions since Sunday night. Last week, reports emerged that IS had shot down a Jordanian plane in Syria using a heat-seeking missile and taken its pilot hostage. US and Jordanian officials later confirmed the capture, but denied that IS had shot the plane down.

Kurdish Headline:  Kurd infighting: Turkish premier warns against deadly clashes

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Sunday warned that the government would take action against any further violence in the southeast after three people were killed in fresh clashes between two rival Kurdish groups. “We will stand firm … against whoever dares to erode our unity through provocative actions,” Davutoglu told his ruling party supporters in the southern province of Hatay bordering Syria. Three people were killed Saturday in the town of Cizre in the southeast in clashes between rebels of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Sunni Huda-Par group. Huda-Par is known to be the political extension of Turkish Hezbollah and has long abhorred the PKK — which has fought Turkish security forces in a three-decade insurgency for Kurdish self-rule. The motive for the clashes was not clear but a security source told AFP at the weekend that tensions were running high between the two groups since Friday night when the Huda-Par attacked Kurdish rebels’ tents in the town. The rivalry between the PKK and the Huda-Par turned fierce in October when Islamic State insurgents were fighting Kurdish forces in the Syrian town of Kobani just across the Turkish border.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that a widening of U.S. sanctions against Moscow this week may hamper bilateral cooperation on issues such as Iran’s nuclear program and the Syrian crisis. “The actions by the United States are putting in doubt the prospects of bilateral cooperation on solving the situation around the Iranian nuclear program, the Syrian crisis and other acute international problems,” the ministry said. “As Washington could have seen previously, we don’t leave such unfriendly acts without an answer,” the statement added.

Headline:  Netanyahu: Iran increasing efforts to deepen terrorist activities in West Bank

Prime Minister Netanyahu condemns UN for not responding to PA official who said he is “excited” by Iranian directives to send weapons to West Bank. Iran is increasing its efforts to deepen its  terrorist activities in the West Bank, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the cabinet at its weekly meeting on Sunday. “None other than the Palestinian Authority’s ambassador in Tehran said that he was enthused by Iranian ruler [Ali] Khamenei’s instructions to send weapons to the West Bank,” Netanyahu said. The prime minister quoted the Palestinian envoy as saying, “The Zionist entity is an aggressor and cancerous tumor which should be annihilated sooner or later.” Netanyahu emphasized that these were not the words of a Hamas representative but, rather, of the PA’s official in Iran. “Now what does the UN do in response?” Netanyahu asked. “Instead of dealing with this incitement, it gives it a place of honor, the same incitement that leads in the end to the terror acts that we have experienced lately.” Netanyahu was referring to an interview that the Palestinian envoy in Tehran, Salah al-Zawawi, gave to the Tehran Times last week in which – according to the paper – he “underlined his countrymen’s enthusiasm for the materialization of the instructions” given by Khamenei to send arms to the West Bank to intensify its fight against Israel.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the worldwide combat mission launched shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, that eventually became synonymous with the 13-year war in Afghanistan, officially ended Sunday. The mission that took the lives of 2,356 U.S. service members was punctuated with a ceremony with military officials in Kabul and a statement from President Obama lauding the efforts of those involved. “On this day we give thanks to our troops and intelligence personnel who have been relentless against the terrorists responsible for 9/11 — devastating the core al Qaeda leadership, delivering justice to Osama bin Laden, disrupting terrorist plots and saving countless American lives. We are safer, and our nation is more secure, because of their service,” Obama said in the written statement. Up to 10,800 U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan in 2015 and the mission will be renamed “Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.” Military officials say that will be a narrowly defined two-prong mission: advising the Afghan army and continuing to mount counterterrorism operations against the Taliban and other insurgents who may pose a threat to the U.S. or Afghan governments.

Forces loyal to Libya’s internationally recognized government carried out their first air strikes Sunday against militia-held third city Misrata, a spokesman said. Col. Ahmed Mesmari said the strikes were in response to a renewed attempt by the Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) militia on Sunday morning to seize the key Al-Sidra oil export terminal. Residents said the air strikes hit the school of aviation close to Misrata airport, the port and a steel plant. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Fajr Libya has been attempting to take Al-Sidra and the nearby Ras Lanuf terminal since Thursday when it killed at least 22 soldiers in a surprise attack by speedboat. Seven of the 19 oil tanks at Al-Sidra were ablaze on Sunday as a result of the fighting, an oil official said.

AlgeriaAlgeria

Headline:    Algeria’s winter of discontent

The Algerian regime faces tough decisions this winter as it copes with falling revenue and low oil prices. President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has called the situation “worrisome” and is pushing Saudi Arabia to cut its oil production to force prices up. Oil and natural gas sales are key to the economic prosperity of the almost 40 million Algerians, 70% of whom are under the age of 25 and 30% are younger than 15. Unemployment and underemployment are severe, and housing shortages are endemic. Fortunately, the government has $190 billion in reserves to cover deficit spending. Last weekend, the government announced the first of what is expected to be many cost-cutting measures. Public sector job hiring will be frozen in 2015. The public sector is Algeria’s largest employer, covering 60% of the job market. Infrastructure projects such as highways are expected to be shelved next, and extensive subsidies for electricity and education are also in danger of cuts. The oil minister called for OPEC to cut production to stop the decline in oil prices. In practice, this means calling for Saudi Arabia to cut its oil production of 9.6 million barrels per day, something the kingdom has ruled out. With over $750 billion in reserves, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz is content to let oil prices stay low for now and drive alternatives such as shale oil production out of business. Algeria is more desperate.

Headline:   Turkey backs Palestinians over holy site tensions

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Sunday that Turkey stands behind Palestinians in their efforts to oppose what he called Israeli attempts to “reduce the Islamic character” of Jerusalem. Davutoglu was speaking to reporters in the central Turkish city of Konya, a day after meeting with exiled Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal. Violent demonstrations led Israel in November to briefly restrict Muslim access to a holy site in Jerusalem that includes the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third most sacred place, and the ancient Hebrew Temple Mount, the holiest place in Judaism. The move fueled accusations that Israel was secretly plotting to take over the site, despite Israeli denials. “The Palestinians … have a common stance. We back this stance against the reduction or the elimination of Jerusalem’s Islamic character,” Davutoglu said. “Turkey will not accept any impositions concerning Al-Aqsa and will do whatever needs to be done internationally to protect Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

Headline: Cameroon: 41 Militants Killed in Wave of Attacks

Cameroon’s army killed at least 41 Islamist militants as it fought off a wave of attacks along its border with Nigeria over the weekend in an escalation in the conflict, the government said. The coordinated assaults on five towns and villages showed a change in tactics by Nigerian Boko Haram fighters, who have focused on hit-and-run raids on individual settlements in the past, Information Minister Issa Tchiroma added. Boko Haram’s campaign to carve out an Islamist caliphate has spread from its stronghold in northeast Nigeria to neighboring Cameroon, raising fears for an already unstable region also threatened by Islamist militants in the Sahel. Cameroon has sent thousands of soldiers to its Far North region to fight off the militants and said it launched air attacks on the movement for the first time on Sunday.

Two Yemeni soldiers have been killed and nearly a dozen others injured in an al-Qaeda-linked militant attack in the country’s troubled southeastern province of Hadhramaut. A military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said militants ambushed the convoy of General Abdulrahman al-Hulaili, the head of the First Military Region, on Monday. The unnamed official added that the terrorists detonated an improvised explosive device, and fired shots as the convoy passed by. However, Hulaili escaped the act of terror unscathed. Separately, two suspected al-Qaeda gunmen, riding a motorbike, fatally shot an intelligence officer, identified as Nasser al-Wahishi, in the central city of al-Bayda, located about 210 kilometers (130 miles) southeast of the capital, Sana’a. On Sunday, a bomb struck the vehicle carrying the commander of the 31st Armored Battalion, General Farej al-Atiqi, in the southern city of Aden. China may have mastered the art of fabricating economic data to a level unmatched by anyone except the US Department of Labor, but its derivative countries have much to learn. And none other more so than one of China’s favorite sources of commodities over the past decade: Brazil. It is here that things are going from worse to catastrophic, as disclosed in today’s update of Brazil’s fiscal picture. Here are the disturbing facts showing that behind the world’s propaganda growth facade, it is all hollow: Brazil’s consolidated public sector primary fiscal balance, which posted a significantly worse than expected R$8.1bn primary deficit in November driven by the R$6.7bn deficit of the Central Government, dipped into negative territory: -0.18% of GDP, driven by the significant deterioration of the Central Government finances. This is the worst fiscal outturn since November 1998. Furthermore, the primary surplus of subnational government (States and Municipalities) has also been eroding, a reflection of the authorizations given by the Treasury since 2011 for increased borrowing by the States. For instance, the States and Municipalities posted a negligible 0.08% of GDP surplus during Jan-Nov 2014, down from 0.46% of GDP during Jan-Nov 2013.

Headline:   Ukraine in ‘full-blown financial crisis’ – National Bank head

Ukraine’s GDP shrank by 7.5 percent from January till November 2014, as foreign exchange reserves fell to their lowest level since 2009, and inflation jumped to 21 percent by November, admits the head of the Ukraine’s National Bank, Valeriya Gontareva. The country’s foreign exchange reserves shrank to $9.9 billion, as Kiev gave Naftogaz an estimated $8.6 billion to buy gas and settle state guaranteed Eurobonds. $3.1 billion went to settle the debt with Russia’s Gazprom, Gontareva explained. Earlier in the week, after the unprecedented 10–hour session the Ukrainian parliament adopted the 2015 budget that sees a number of drastic cuts and import duty raised to 10 percent, which should give way to new IMF funds. The last IMF estimate showed that Ukraine needs another $15 billion, on top of the $17 billion the Fund had already agreed to allocate.

In the capital, a 42-year-old man was diagnosed and quarantined on December 26, the 25th case of bird flu in the country this year but the first infection reported in Cairo. Eleven patients have recovered while four remain under observation, Abdel Ghaffar said. The H5N1 strain has killed more than 400 people worldwide since it first appeared in 2003, most of them in southeast Asia. It is one of several deadly or potentially deadly strains of bird flu that are closely monitored by the World Health Organisation. The strain is different from the H5N8 version, whose spread on European poultry farms this year has prompted WHO calls for vigilance. A third strain of bird flu—H7N9—has killed more than 170 people since it emerged in 2013.

Headline: Three dead, thousands flee as storm hits Mindanao Philippines

Three people were killed, one is missing and thousands fled their homes as a tropical storm battered the southern Philippines with strong winds and heavy rain, officials said Monday. The storm, locally named “Seniang” and with winds of up to 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour, slammed into the main southern island of Mindanao before dawn, then crossed to the  central islands, the state weather buerau said. In the Mindanao city of Tagum, a bus skidded off a rain-soaked road late Sunday, leaving one passenger dead and 17 injured, said provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Samuel Gadingan. In the mountainous town of Monkayo, a 65-year-old man drowned as he tried to cross a river while one person was killed by a tree uprooted by fierce winds in Butuan City, other officials said. Another man was swept away while collecting coconuts on a riverbank in Compostela town and is still missing, said regional disaster relief official Raul Villocino. Landslides were also reported in the Monkayo area but no deaths were reported, Villocino added. In Surigao del Sur province in Mindanao, a total of 13,740 people were evacuated in eight towns, Governor Johnny Pimentel told AFP.

Headline: Malaysia evacuates 120,000 as floods spread to Johor

Nearly 120,000 Malaysians have been forced out of their homes in the worst flooding in decades, a disaster that has forced Prime Minister Najib Razak to cut short a holiday in the United States. Kuala Lumpur has also cancelled its annual New Year celebration, in a mark of respect for the record number of evacuees, with several state governments following suit. At least five people have been killed by the rising waters, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP). As of 3pm yesterday, 118,896 people had been moved to flood relief centres, mostly in the northern states of Kelantan (45,467), Pahang (35,736), Terengganu (31,001) and Perak (6,119). Johor became the latest state to be affected, with 214 displaced in the towns of Kluang and Muar yesterday. Flood waters in the southern state were still rising in the afternoon, a National Security Council spokesman was reported by Bernama news agency as saying.
