Biden Removes Trump’s Sanctions on ICC Court, Enabling Prosecution of Israel
US President Joe Biden on Friday lifted sanctions that Donald Trump had imposed on two top officials of the International Criminal Court, undoing one of the past administration’s more aggressive moves targeting international institutions and officials. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement stressed that the United States still strongly disagreed with some actions by the court, which is a standing body based at The Hague in the Netherlands charged with handling genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The United States is not one of the about 120 member countries of the court. “We believe, however, that our concerns about these cases would be better addressed” through diplomacy “rather than through the imposition of sanctions”, Blinken wrote. The removal of the sanctions was the latest signal that the Biden administration is intent on returning to the multilateral fold. Since Biden took office, his administration has rejoined the World Health Organization, re-engaged with the UN Human Rights Council, returned to the Paris climate accord and on Friday started talks aimed at returning to the Iran nuclear deal. Trump had pulled out of all five. Pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC blasted the move warning that it could have damaging affects on Israel who is the target of an investigation by the Hague for war crimes. In a tweet on Friday, AIPAC wrote: “We are disappointed the administration is revoking sanctions on the International Criminal Court officials who are pursuing a baseless and discriminatory attack on the Jewish state. We agree with the administration’s position that the Court doesn’t have jurisdiction over the U.S. and Israel.”

Netanyahu’s trial begins while parties begin recommending candidates for prime minister
You would be hard-pressed to get two more disparate scenes at one time: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was beginning his trial on bribery and corruption charges at a court in East Jerusalem, while President Reuven Rivlin was beginning talks with parties elected to the 24th Knesset at his official residence in West Jerusalem. Netanyahu, Israel’s first sitting prime minister to go on trial, denies the charges against him. Rivlin, refereeing his fifth election process in his seven-year term, expressed doubt that he could find a stable coalition to recommend. “I don’t see a way to establish the government right now. The people of Israel should be very worried that we may be forced to be dragged into a fifth election campaign,” Rivlin said during one of numerous meetings on Monday. Rivlin indicated he might end up passing the decision back to the Knesset.

Jordan reportedly foils plot to topple King Abdullah
Former Jordanian Crown Prince Hamzah bin Hussein has been placed under house arrest amid reports that the kingdom’s security forces have foiled a coup against King Abdullah II. At least 20 Jordanians have been arrested in connection with the alleged coup. According to The Washington Post, Hamzah was placed under restriction at his Amman palace amid an alleged plot to unseat King Abdullah II. “The move followed the discovery of what palace officials described as a complex and far-reaching plot that included at least one other Jordanian royal, as well as tribal leaders and members of the country’s security establishment,” the report said. Hamzah is the elder son of the late King Hussein and his American-born wife, Queen Noor. He was named Crown Prince of Jordan in 1999, a position he held until his half-brother, King Abdullah II, rescinded it in 2004. Hamzah, an outspoken critic of corruption in Jordan, had called for holding those responsible to account. Sources in Jordan said that a large security force raided Hamzah’s palace in Amman in the afternoon and handed him a house arrest order. A number of Hamzah’s associates, including the director of his office, Yasser Suleiman al-Majali, were arrested by officers belonging to the Jordanian General Intelligence Directorate, the sources said. The director of Hamzah’s palace, Adnan Abu Hammad, was also taken into custody, they added.

Two rockets hit near Iraq air base hosting US soldiers
Two rockets hit near an Iraqi air base hosting US soldiers north of Baghdad on Sunday, three days ahead of a new “strategic dialogue” with Washington, a security source told AFP. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the strike, which caused no casualties or property damage, but the US routinely blames Iran-linked Iraqi factions for such attacks on its troops and diplomats. Sunday’s was the 14th attack against American interests – including troops, the Baghdad embassy or Iraqi supply convoys to foreign forces – since US President Joe Biden took office in January. Qais Al-Khazali, a senior pro-Iran figure in the state-sponsored Hashed Al-Shaabi paramilitary force, recently declared that the “resistance” was carrying out attacks and would step them up “unless the US withdraws all its combat forces from across Iraq.”

Turkey detains 10 retired admirals who defended maritime accord
Turkey has detained 10 retired admirals for signing a statement in support of an 85-year-old maritime accord, accusing them of conspiring against the constitutional order, the state-owned Anadolu news agency said on Monday. Officials said their declaration on the Montreux Convention, signed by more than a hundred former high-ranking navy personnel, was a direct challenge to civilian government and evoked past army interventions. Turkey’s military staged three coups between 1960-1980 and pressured the first Islamist-led government out of power in 1997. The admirals are suspected of conspiring against state security and constitutional order, news website Haberturk said. Anadolu said four other suspects were called to report to police within three days as part of the probe into the statement. The retired military personnel had voiced concern over Montreux – which they said was strategically important for Turkey’s maritime security – given President Tayyip Erdogan’s authority to withdraw from such pacts, and his move last month to ditch an international accord meant to prevent violence against women. The statement came as the government moves forward with plans to construct a massive canal connecting the Black Sea north of Istanbul to the Sea of Marmara to the south, parallel to the Bosphorus strait.

Arabs’ Real Enemies: Iran and Turkey
After decades of portraying Israel as their mortal enemy, the Arabs have finally woken up to the fact that it is two Islamic countries, Turkey and Iran, that are actually threatening their security and stability. The Arabs are now seeking to draw the world’s attention to these Turkish and Iranian threats. The Arabs are warning the world that Turkey and Iran are funding and arming terrorists, that they a major threat to stability in the Middle East, and that they keep meddling in the affairs of Arab countries. They are also telling the world — in message directed mainly to the Biden Administration — that the only way to deal with Turkey and Iran is by increasing political and economic pressure on them and holding them to account for their malign actions. The latest message from the Arabs was delivered on March 3 by Arab League foreign ministers. In a clear directive to the Biden administration and the international community, the ministers warned against Iranian and Turkish intervention in the internal affairs of the Arab countries. The message the Arab foreign ministers are sending to the Biden administration is: In your dealings with the mullahs in Tehran and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, remember that they are funding and arming terrorists and trying to destabilize and dominate Arab countries. The Arab ministers are also saying that they want the international community, including the Biden administration, to take real measures to stop Turkey and Iran from pursuing their dangerous policies against Arab countries.

U.S. open to discussing wider nuclear deal road map if Iran wishes
Tehran rejects reported Washington plan to ask it to halt work on advanced centrifuges and the enrichment of uranium to 20% purity in return for undefined U.S. sanctions relief, as Western diplomat says proposals on a return to nuclear deal are being made by both sides. Efforts to sketch out initial U.S. and Iranian steps to resume compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal have stalled and Western officials believe Iran may now wish to discuss a wider road map to revive the pact, something Washington is willing to do. The agreement eased economic sanctions on Tehran in return for curbs to the Iranian nuclear program designed to make it harder to develop an atomic weapon – an ambition Tehran denies. Three Western officials said the Biden administration and Iran had mainly communicated indirectly via European parties to the deal – Britain, France and Germany – and that they believe Iran now wants to discuss a broader plan to return to the pact. “What we had heard was that they were interested first in a series of initial steps, and so we were exchanging ideas on a series of initial steps” said a U.S. official who, like others cited in this story, spoke on condition of anonymity. “It sounds from what we are hearing publicly now, and through other means, that they may be … not interested in (discussing) initial steps but in a road map for return to full compliance,” he said. “If that’s what Iran wants to talk about, we are happy to talk about it,” the U.S. official added. It is not clear, however, whether that is Iran’s stance. Iran’s nuclear policy is ultimately determined by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who said flatly on March 21 that “the Americans must lift all sanctions” before Tehran would resume compliance.

Anti-cop protesters start fire, graffiti wall outside Portland police union HQ
Cop-hating protesters started a fire outside Portland’s police union headquarters after scrawling “Nazis work here” on the wall, according to officials and videos. The blaze was ignited by a group of “about 40 people” gathered outside the Portland Police Association HQ early Sunday, the city’s force said. Videos online showed wood and tree branches on fire in front of a wall covered in anti-police graffiti — including the message “Nazis work here.” Other walls were sprayed with a picture of a pig, the words “cops are murderers” as well as “ACAB,” a widely used Antifa slur standing for “all cops are b–tards.” Footage shared online also showed a large police response before the fire was quickly extinguished.

Taiwan reports new incursion by Chinese jets into defense zone
Taiwan’s Defence Ministry on Monday reported a new incursion by China’s air force into the island’s air defence identification zone, made up of eight fighter jets and two other aircraft, one of which flew through the strategic Bashi Channel. Chinese-claimed Taiwan has complained over the last few months of repeated missions by China’s air force near the island, concentrated in the southwestern part its air defence zone near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands. Late last month Taiwan reported 20 Chinese aircraft were involved in one such incursion. In the latest incident, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said four Chinese J-16 and four J-10 fighters were involved, as well as an early warning plane and anti-submarine aircraft, the latter of which flew to the south of Taiwan through the Bashi Channel that connects the Pacific to the South China Sea. Taiwan’s air force sent up a combat air patrol and warned the Chinese aircraft away, the ministry added. There was no immediate response from China’s Defence Ministry, but the flights coincided with other Chinese military activity to Taiwan’s north. Japan’s Defence Ministry said on Sunday that the Chinese aircraft carrier the Liaoning, accompanied by five escort ships, had transited the Miyako Strait on their way to the Pacific. Though China’s air force has not flown over Taiwan itself, the flights have ramped up pressure, both financial and physical, on the island’s air force to ensure its aircraft are ready to go at any moment in what security officials describe as a “war of attrition”.

Janet Yellen to call for global minimum tax rate
Janet Yellen will use her first major address as Treasury secretary to argue for a global minimum corporate tax rate, Axios has learned, as she makes the case for President Biden’s plan to raise U.S. corporate taxes to fund his $2 trillion+ infrastructure plan. Convincing other countries to impose a global minimum tax would reduce the likelihood of companies relocating offshore, as Biden seeks to increase the corporate rate from 21% to 28%. President Trump lowered the U.S. rate from 35% to 21%, arguing that U.S. companies were at a global disadvantage and were being incentivized to relocate offshore. Biden has tapped five Cabinet secretaries to explain — and sell — his plan to the American public. Biden has been relying on Yellen to convince the business community and reassure Wall Street that his $2 trillion+ infrastructure proposal, on top of his $1.9 trillion stimulus package, won’t lead to inflation. By trying to convince other countries to impose a global minimum tax, Yellen is acknowledging the risks to the American economy if it acts alone in raising corporate rates.

WHO Confirms Possibility of COVID Transmission from Humans to Cats, Dogs, Tigers
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirms the possibility of transmission of COVID-19 from humans to cats, dogs, minks, raccoon dogs, lions and tigers, and studies the effects of the virus on other animal species, WHO Representative to Russia Melita Vujnovic said on Monday. “The COVID-19 virus spreads mainly through human-to-human transmission, but there is evidence of human-to-animal transmission as it is a zoonotic virus,” Vujnovic said. The WHO representative also said that an “intermediate host” has not yet been identified. In addition, the health expert said that it is important to understand which animals are most “susceptible to the virus in order to find other potential animal reservoirs and avoid future outbreaks.” Moreover, Vujnovic said that the WHO recommends coronavirus-positive people to limit contact with pets. “It is currently recommended that people with COVID-19 and people at risk limit contact with pets and other animals. As viruses move between populations of humans and animals, genetic modifications of the virus can occur and these changes could potentially have consequences for the disease that infects humans,” she said.

Iran fired missile at Israeli ship in Arabian Sea – report
An Iranian missile was fired at an Israeli ship in the Arabian Sea, hitting and damaging it, N12 reported Thursday. The container ship is owned by an Israeli businessman and was making its way to Tanzania from India, N12 reported. As the ship sailed between Indian and Oman, it was hit by a missile that damaged it, according to N12. The incident was reported to Israeli security officials and to the company’s owners. The ship will continue on its path to India, where the damage will be assessed. Israeli security officials are examining the possible implications of the incident and estimate that it could mean Iran intends to attack more Israeli ships, according to N12. According to the report the ship is owned by XT Management, based in the port city of Haifa. Iran was also the main suspect behind an attack in late February on an Israeli-owned cargo vessel Helios Ray that was damaged by a mysterious explosion in the Gulf of Oman.

Pentagon linguist found guilty of leaking US intel – relating also to Israel – to Hizballah contact
Mariam Taha Thompson, 63, a Pentagon linguist with top security clearance, pleaded guilty on Friday, March 26, to passing to a Hizballah associate classified US intelligence information sought by Iran on the US drone attack that killed top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani on Jan. 3, 2020. “Thompson jeopardized the lives of members of the US military as well as other individuals supporting the United States in a combat zone, when she passed classified information to a person whom she knew was connected to Lebanese Hizballah, a foreign terrorist organization which intended to use the information to hurt this country,” said Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers for the Justice Department’s National Security Division. Thompson, formerly of Rochester, Minnesota, was stationed at a Special Operations Task Force facility in Iraq from mid-December 2019 until her arrest last year. “The United States entrusted the defendant with highly-sensitive classified information regarding one of its most critical tools — human intelligence in an active combat zone,” said Acting US Attorney Channing D. Phillips for the District of Columbia. “The defendant’s complete betrayal of that trust placed the lives of American men and women on the battlefield, and their allies, in grave danger.” Mid-East intelligence sources told DEBKAfile that the intelligence she transmitted to her Hizballah link for passing onto Iran was clearly extensive and included classified information pertaining also to Israel, Iraq, Syria and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi-led coalition destroys Houthi rigged boats, drones – state media
The conflict, seen in the region as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, has caused what the United Nations says is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. The Saudi-led coalition battling Yemen’s Houthi forces has destroyed two explosive-laden boats that the Iran-aligned group planned to use in an “imminent” attack launched from the Red Sea port of Hodeidah, Saudi state media reported on Sunday. The coalition also said it intercepted and destroyed two armed drones launched towards southern Saudi Arabia.

US-Led Coalition in Iraq Targeted In Bombing Attacks, Source Says
Two logistical support convoys belonging to the US-led international coalition in Iraq were targeted by two explosive devices in the country’s central and southern provinces, a local security source told Sputnik on Monday. “The first explosion took place on a road in the Babil governorate in the direction of Al-Diwaniyah, while the second occurred on a highway near the city of Nasiriyah [in the Dhi Qar province],” the source said. No casualties have been reported – only the wheels of the convoy vehicles were damaged by the blasts, the source added. Iraq declared victory over the Daesh* at the end of 2017. However, Iraqi forces, assisted by the US-led coalition, continue raiding dormant terrorist cells scattered around the country.

The Chinese and Iranian foreign ministers on Saturday signed a 25-year cooperation agreement between the two allies in a ceremony carried live on state television. “Relations between the two countries have now reached the level of strategic partnership and China seeks to comprehensively improve relations with Iran,” China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi was quoted by Iran’s state media as telling his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif. Rouhani voiced appreciation for Beijing’s support within Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and called for more coronavirus vaccine exports to Iran, the worst-hit country by the pandemic in the Middle East. “Cooperation between the two countries is very important for the implementation of the nuclear accord and the fulfillment of obligations by European countries,” Rouhani said, according to his official website.

Myanmar coup: Dozens killed as army opens fire on protesters during deadliest day
Thousands flee into Thailand following Myanmar air strikes
Dozens of people have been killed by security forces in Myanmar, on the deadliest day since last month’s military takeover of the country. More than 90 deaths, including children, were confirmed by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) monitoring group. “They are killing us like birds or chickens, even in our homes,” resident Thu Ya Zaw told Reuters news agency in the central town of Myingyan. “We will keep protesting regardless.” The lethal crackdown came as protesters defied warnings and took to the streets on the annual Armed Forces Day. Protesters gathered across Myanmar, also known as Burma, on Saturday. State TV aired an announcement the previous evening saying people “should learn from the tragedy of earlier ugly deaths that you can be in danger of getting shot to the head and back”. Security forces were out in strength trying to prevent rallies. Images shared on social media showed people with gunshot wounds and families mourning. The director of the Burma Human Rights Network in UK told the BBC the military had shown it had “no limits, no principles”. “It’s a massacre, it’s not a crackdown anymore,” Kyaw Win said. US, UK and EU officials condemned the violence, with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab calling it a “new low”.

Antifa ‘armed’ rioters descend on Oregon State Capitol in Salem
Salem Police arrested at least three people and urged others to stay away from Oregon’s State Capitol building Sunday evening as violence linked to Antifa-aligned protesters broke out. The “heavily armed” crowd had grown to as many as 200 people, Fox 12 Portland reported. The chaos unfolded as a planned right-wing protest and Antifa counter-protest were scheduled in Salem for the same day. “The risk of violence has increased as the opposing protestors are expected to arrive in large numbers,” police added. “We are advising residents/visitors to avoid the capitol mall area. For those in the area, please remain cautious/aware given the circumstances.” Authorities said that the department, along with Oregon State Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, would be monitoring the situation and that they were “prepared to act in the interest of the public’s safety.”

Rebels besiege town in northern Mozambique for fifth day
Besieged Mozambique Town Deserted As Islamic State Group Claims Control
Rebels fought the Mozambican army Sunday for the fifth straight day for control of the strategic northern town of Palma, as reports came in that dozens of civilians have been killed and bodies were littering the streets. The fate of scores of foreign energy workers was also unknown. Some of the dead had been beheaded, according to Human Rights Watch. An attempt by expatriate workers to flee to safety came under heavy fire, causing many deaths, according to local reports. The attacks in Palma started Wednesday just hours after the French energy company Total announced that it would resume work outside the town on its huge natural gas project at Afungi, near Mozambique’s northeastern border with Tanzania. Earlier rebel attacks prompted Total in January to suspend work on the project to extract gas from offshore sites. The Mozambican army has been fighting the rebels in several locations to regain control of Palma, Col. Omar Saranga, a Ministry of Defense spokesman, said Sunday in the capital of Maputo. Hundreds of Palma residents, both local and foreign, have been rescued, he said, adding that the defense forces are battling “to contain the criminal attacks of terrorists and restore normality in Palma.” An estimated 200 Mozambicans and foreign workers sheltered at the Hotel Amarula. On Friday, a band of them in 17 vehicles drove together to the beach, where they hoped to be rescued, but the convoy came under heavy fire. Only 7 vehicles reached the beach, according to local reports and messages sent by survivors. Seven people in the convoy had been killed, the military spokesman confirmed Sunday. The beach remained under insurgent fire, preventing rescue efforts from air or sea, according to the reports. The Hotel Amarula remained under attack and it’s not known what happened to those in the 10 vehicles that did not reach the coast.

US Believes China “Flirting” With Taiwan Takeover
20 Chinese military planes breach Taiwan’s ADIZ
A weekend report in Financial Times suggests the world is closer than ever to witnessing a major conflict flare up over Taiwan. Multiple alarming quotes from top American defense officials included in the report reveal that Washington fears China is now in the process of planning a takeover of the US-backed democratic island. Ironically the report was published shortly on the heels of the Chinese Air Force’s largest ever incursion into Taiwan’s air space Friday, which saw a whopping 20 aircraft, including four long-range bombers, breach the country’s southwest defense zone. FT concludes based on the US officials interviewed for the report that the Biden administration now sees Beijing as actively “flirting with the idea of seizing control of Taiwan as President Xi Jinping becomes more willing to take risks to boost his legacy.” Such a scenario would force Washington’s hand — it would have to decide to either go to war on behalf of its tiny ally halfway across the world against the massive and formidable People’s Liberation Army (PLA) — or sit back and watch from the sidelines somewhat helplessly. “China appears to be moving from a period of being content with the status quo over Taiwan to a period in which they are more impatient and more prepared to test the limits and flirt with the idea of unification,” one senior US official was cited in the report as saying. The pessimistic assessment was reportedly based on the Biden admin monitoring Chinese military movements and behavior over the prior two months.

Global banks warn of possible losses from hedge fund default
Swiss bank Credit Suisse said Monday it may have suffered a “highly significant” loss from a default by a U.S.-based hedge fund on margin calls that it and other banks made last week, while Japan’s Nomura said it could face a loss of $2 billion due to an event with a U.S. client. Credit Suisse didn’t identify the “significant” hedge fund or the other banks affected, or give other details of what happened. News reports identified the hedge fund as New York-based Archegos Capital Management. “Following the failure of the fund to meet these margin commitments, Credit Suisse and a number of other banks are in the process of exiting these positions,” the company said. The Financial Times reported that Archegos had large exposures to ViacomCBS and several Chinese technology stocks and was hit hard after shares of the U.S. media group fell last week. Nomura said that on Friday “an event occurred” that could subject one of its U.S. subsidiaries to a losss of $2 billion based on market prices on Friday. It didn’t identify the client. The bank said “there will be no issues related to the operations or financial soundness” of Nomura or its U.S. subsidiary.

Amazon Forces Delivery Drivers to Consent to AI Surveillance or Lose Their jobs
Amazon delivery drivers in the U.S. are reportedly being told that they must sign “biometric consent” forms giving Amazon permission to use AI-powered cameras to track them while they work if they want to keep their jobs. The Verge reports that Amazon is rolling out new digital sensors in its delivery vehicles across the U.S. to monitor and control the activity of its workers in efforts to improve efficiency. The firm installed machine-learning powered surveillance cameras in its delivery vans earlier this year, now the firm is telling employees they must agree to be surveilled by AI or lose their jobs. Amazon delivery drivers in the U.S. are now being told to sign “biometric consent” forms to continue working for the e-commerce giant. The information that Amazon is collecting from workers seems to vary based on the surveillance equipment being fitted in each van, but the company’s privacy policy covers a wide range of information.

The crime riddled city of Baltimore will no longer be prosecuting “low level crimes” including prostitution and drug distribution, the State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced on Friday. ISIS-linked extremists suspected in Palm Sunday church bombing in Indonesia
More than a dozen people were injured when two attackers blew themselves up outside a Catholic church in the Muslim-majority archipelago of Indonesia on Palm Sunday, the first day of the Holy Week. The bomb exploded at the Cathedral Church in the city of Makassar in South Sulawesi province at about 10.30 a.m. on Sunday as the church was preparing for its third service, according to reports. Police disclosed that at least 20 were wounded in the incident and that two attackers — one likely a woman — were instantly killed by the blast, according to the Associated Press. The police also disclosed that those injured by the blast include churchgoers and four security guards. National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo told the media that the two attackers are believed to have been members of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah and one of the attackers is thought to have links to a church bombing in the Philippines. JAD pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State terror organization in 2018. According to the United Nations Security Council, Jamaah Ansharut Daulah “participates in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing, or perpetrating of acts or activities” in conjunction with groups like the Islamic State and Al-Qaida.

A strong tornado hit the district of Cimenyan, West Java, Indonesia at 15:45 LT on Sunday, March 28, 2021. Badung Regency BPBD reported 298 homes were damaged in the villages of Cimenyan and Mekarsaluyu, as well as 2 educational facilities, 1 village office, and 1 mosque. 2 people sustained serious injuries and 3 minor. Mideast quartet discusses reviving Israel, Palestinian peace talks
Chinese FM reveals initiative to protect MidEast
The Middle East quartet of mediators – the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations – discussed on Tuesday reviving “meaningful negotiations” between Israel and the Palestinians with the aim of a two-state solution. In a statement following their meeting, the quartet said that both Israel and the Palestinians need “to refrain from unilateral actions that make a two-state solution more difficult to achieve.” It appeared to be the first time since September 2018 that envoys from the four mediators have met. Last month, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he hoped there would be a quartet meeting in coming weeks, now that there was a new president in the White House. Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday unveiled a five-point initiative for security and stability in the Middle East to Al Arabiya. The Chinese minister also discussed the Palestinian and Israeli issue, and called for a two-state solution, stressing that his country would send invitations to Palestinian and Israeli personalities for a dialogue in China.

IAF strikes targets in Gaza after rocket lands near Beersheba
The IDF struck targets belonging to terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday night in response to a rocket that was fired from the Strip towards Israel earlier in the evening and fell in an open area near Beersheba, according to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit. The strikes targeted sites near Gaza City in the northern Gaza Strip and near Deir Al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian reports. According to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, the strikes targeted a site for manufacturing rockets and a military position. “The Hamas terrorist organization bears responsibility for what happens inside and outside of the Gaza Strip, and will bear the consequences of terrorist acts against Israeli citizens,” said the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.

Israel’s election is over: What comes next?
Israel’s fourth election in two years is over and the tallying of the votes was taking place Wednesday, the first major step in a legislated parade of necessary events that will lead to the next government taking office in Jerusalem – or to new elections. The election is but one step in a long process enshrined in law that sets out the actions that have to be taken under Israel’s proportional representation democracy. Final official results must be announced by the Central Elections committee by March 31. All parties can file appeals against the results until April 14, two weeks after the official results announcement. By April 7, President Reuven Rivlin has to call upon the candidate he thinks has the best chance of forming a new government. That person is given 28 days to meet with prospective coalition partners and reach an agreement to get their support so that at least 61 of the 120 members of the Knesset will vote in favor. The latest deadline for the candidate to reach an agreement is May 5. If the candidate cannot form a government in that time, Rivlin may grant an additional two weeks, up to May 19.

Egypt, Jordan sign seven cooperative agreements
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and his Jordanian counterpart Bisher Al-Khasawneh signed seven agreements to enhance cooperation between the two countries in various fields during the 29th session of the Egyptian-Jordanian Higher Committee on Tuesday. The MoUs cover cooperation between the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources; an executive exchange program between the Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation and the Jordanian Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation; water resources; antiquities; corporate control; and communication and information technology. Madbouly said it had been one of the most important meetings ever held between the two countries and came as a result of the “strong ties binding the peoples and governments of both countries, as well as the strong relations between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Jordan’s King Abdullah.”

Arab League expresses ‘readiness’ to intervene in forming Lebanese government
The Arab League has said it is ready to intervene to solve the crisis of forming the Lebanese government between President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri. The bloc urged Lebanese politicians to work quickly to end a political deadlock and offered to help Lebanon overcome the crisis. Zaki stressed the need for a government of technocrats to save Lebanon from collapsing by implementing necessary reforms that meet the demands of the Lebanese people. The political crisis has persisted with Hariri announcing on Monday that no agreement was reached with Aoun after the latter stuck to his conditions.

A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2021 FM2 flew past Earth at a distance of 0.22 LD / 0.00056 AU (83 770 km / 52 055 miles) at 21:46 UTC on March 20, 2021. Since the start of the year, our observatories have identified a total of 33 asteroid flybys within 1 lunar distance from the center of our planet. 2021 FM2 was first observed at Mt. Lemmon Survey, Arizona on March 22, two days after it made its close approach to Earth. The object belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 2.5 and 5.7 m (8.2 – 18.7 feet).

Strombolian activity resumed at Etna’s Southeast crater at 19:05 UTC on March 23, intensified at around 20:30 UTC, and evolved into lava fountaining by 22:00 UTC. The Aviation Color Code was raised to Red at 20:46 UTC on March 23. This is the 16th paroxysmal eruptive episode at Etna since February 16, 2021. A pyroclastic flow was observed on surveillance cameras and confirmed by INGV personnel at 02:37 UTC on March 24. The flow headed toward the Valle del Bove, reaching a height of about 2 900 m (9 500 feet). By 05:43 UTC, the volcanic ash column was rising up to 6 km (19 700 feet) above sea level, drifting SE. Ashfall was reported in Catania and nearby areas.

For the First Time in Israel: Two Public Priestly Blessings on Passover
One of the most impressive gatherings of the year is the Birkat Kohanim, the twice-annual priestly blessing held on the second intermediate days of Passover and Sukkoth when some 40,000 Jews come to the Kotel (Western Wall) in Jerusalem to be blessed by hundreds of Kohanim (the descendants of Aaron the priest). Among fears that the event would be canceled or held in a subdued fashion as it has been the last two times (Sukkot in October and last year during Passover), the Western Wall Heritage Foundation announced that the event will be held in all its glory. The event will be split into two separate events on consecutive days in order to limit crowding, as people from all around Israel are expected to arrive. The events will take place on Monday, 16 Nissan (March 29th) and on Tuesday, 17 Nissan (March 30th). The events will take place between 8:45-10:30 am.

Report: Joe Biden Administration Plans ‘Reset’ with Palestinians
The Biden administration is planning a “reset” with the Palestinians after the relationship crumbled under former President Donald Trump, according to an internal State Department memo. The memo, titled “The US Palestinian Reset and the Path Forward,” is still in an early “working stage” draft, according to the United Arab Emirates-based newspaper The National. The memo, which was given to Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier this month, would form the basis for rolling back parts of Trump’s policies, two sources familiar with the matter said. Drafted by Deputy Assistant Secretary for Israeli and Palestinian Affairs Hady Amr, the plan includes a $15 million aid package in COVID-related humanitarian aid for the Palestinians and supports a return to the two-state solution. “As we reset US relations with the Palestinians, the Palestinian body politic is at an inflection point as it moves towards its first elections in 15 years. At the same time, we [the US] suffer from a lack of connective tissue following the 2018 closure of the PLO office in Washington and refusal of Palestinian Authority leadership to directly engage with our embassy to Israel,” the memo reads. The memo says the U.S. vision hopes “to advance freedom, security, and prosperity for both Israelis and Palestinians in the immediate term which is important in its own right, but also as means to advance the prospects of a negotiated two-state solution.”

Saudi Arabia offers ceasefire plan to Yemen rebels
Air strikes on Saturday by Saudi-led coalition warplanes halted a tank and infantry offensive in Marib by the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen. The coalition said it launched the air strikes to “thwart the Houthi militia’s attempt to advance toward Marib in Al-Kasrah,” northwest of Marib city, the Yemeni government’s last remaining stronghold in the north. It said it had destroyed Houthi military equipment, including tanks, and had inflicted “heavy losses.” Analysts say the Houthis have stepped up their offensive in Marib in an attempt to capture territory as leverage in eventual peace talks.

First Turkish air strikes on Kurdish zone in Syria in 17 months: monitor
Turkey and Russia increase strikes in Syria
The Turkish airforce conducted its first strikes in 17 months against a zone in north Syria held by Kurdish militia on Saturday night, a monitor said.
“A Turkish fighter jet has struck military positions of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Saida village in Ain Issa countryside… which caused loud explosions,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said. This was the first aerial raid since “Operation Peace Spring,” it added — an October 2019 military campaign launched by Ankara and its Syrian allies against the SDF in northern Syria. The air strikes come the same day as “violent clashes” and “intensive rocket fire” on the frontlines of Ain Issa district between SDF forces and Turkish-backed factions, the SOHR said, adding there had been confirmed casualties.

Russia’s top diplomat starts China visit with call to reduce U.S. dollar use
Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif was very content during a trip to Turkey on Friday. He said it was productive and smiled alongside his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu. He said it was a “wonderful” trip where he spoke with his “brother Cavusoglu.” The trip signals the growing alliance that Turkey and Iran have in the region. Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took Russia’s side in a growing spat with the US, slamming US President Joe Biden who is widely hated by Turkey’s ruling party. He claimed that Biden’s recent comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin were unacceptable and “not fitting of a president.” The messaging from Ankara is that Russia and Turkey are growing together as allies and partners. Iran, Turkey and Russia have worked together in the Astana process since 2017 to manage Syria – and they exclude the US. Zarif’s trip to Istanbul is just one of many in which Turkish and Iranian counterparts work together and demonstrate their warm connections. Meanwhile, Turkey, Russia and Qatar issued a joint statement last week following talks between their foreign ministers in Doha, vowing to “defend Syria’s territorial integrity in accordance with the UN Charter,” the report notes.

Iran caught discussing plan to attack US military base using boat as a bomb
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps recently discussed the possibility of attacking an American military base using a boat carrying explosive charges, according to a report in the Associated Press. The base in question, the Fort McNair Army base, is located in Washington DC and a mere 10 minutes from the White House. In January, the National Security Agency (NSA) became aware of the conversation. The findings by the NSA also revealed threats to kill General Joseph M. Martin, whose residence is on the base, and plans to infiltrate and surveil the base, according to two officials interviewed on condition of anonymity by the Associated Press. The plan involves filling a boat with explosives, similar to the 2000 USS Cole bombing in Yemen. In that attack, Al Qaeda used a small-sized fibreglass boat containing C4 explosives and two suicide bombers to blow up the U.S. Navy destroyer, killing 17 sailors and injuring 37. It was one of the deadliest attacks against an American naval ship in recent history.

Myanmar Protesters Hit Streets At Dawn As Mandalay Reels From Eight Deaths
A reporter with the BBC Burmese service has been detained in Myanmar as clashes continue between security forces and protesters. Aung Thura was taken away by men in plain clothes while reporting outside a court in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw. Forty journalists have been arrested since a military coup on 1 February, which saw the detention of elected civilian leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi. Sixteen are still in custody, and the military has revoked the licences of five media companies. Eight people killed on Friday were shot dead by security forces in the central town of Aungban, according to a funeral director and local media. “Security forces came to remove barriers but the people resisted and they fired shots,” a witness told Reuters news agency. Reports from Yangon say the streets have been congested as many people try to flee violence in the country’s main city. Police there are also said to be forcing people to remove barricades put up by protesters. Post-coup violence has claimed the lives of at least 232 Burmese, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners activist group says. One of the bloodiest days was 14 March when 38 were killed. Meanwhile, The Open Society Foundations, a philanthropic organisation founded by billionaire George Soros, called on Tuesday for the immediate release of a staff member held in Myanmar and said allegations of financial misconduct were false. State media in Myanmar reported that authorities had detained an official from the Open Society Myanmar and were looking for 11 other employees on suspicion the group passed funds to opponents of a Feb. 1 coup.

Federal Reserve’s Digital Dollar Push Worries Wall Street
The financial services industry, braced for what could be its biggest disruption in decades, is about to get an early glimpse at the Federal Reserve’s work on a new digital currency. Wall Street is not thrilled. Banks, credit card companies and digital payments processors are nervously watching the push to create an electronic alternative to the paper bills Americans carry in their wallets, or what some call a digital dollar and others call a Fedcoin. As soon as July, officials at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which have been developing prototypes for a digital dollar platform, plan to unveil their research, said James Cunha, who leads the project for the Boston Fed. A digital currency could fundamentally change the way Americans use money, leading some financial firms to lobby the Fed and Congress to slow its creation — or at least ensure they’re not cut out. Seeing the threat to their profits, the banks’ main trade group has told Congress a digital dollar isn’t needed, while payment companies like Visa Inc. and Mastercard Inc. are trying to work with central banks to make sure the new currencies can be used on their networks.

Australia to rescue thousands as Sydney faces worst floods in 60 years
Australia was set on Monday to evacuate thousands more people from suburbs in Sydney’s west, battered by the worst flooding in 60 years, with torrential rains expected to continue for another day or two. Reuters images showed submerged intersections, marooned livestock and cars up to their windshields in water, out of which poked the tops of street signs, as three days of rain swelled rivers in the most populous state of New South Wales (NSW). Sunday was Sydney’s wettest day of the year, with almost 111 mm (4.4 inches) of rain, while nearly 900 mm (35 inches) was dumped in some north coast regions in the last six days, or more than three times the March average, government data showed. The Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers flooded most of northwestern Sydney, leaving residents stranded. Some parts of Sydney’s western regions have suffered the worst flooding since 1961, said authorities, who expect the wild weather to last until Wednesday.
