 Iran’s Khamenei calls to “arm” Palestinians

Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday called for the West Bank to be “armed” and compared the Palestinians there to Hamas in Gaza. “The only thing that can reduce Palestinian hardships is the hand of power,” he tweeted. Iran appears to be calling for Palestinian attacks on Israel. The ayatollah’s tweets, which came after midnight, included claims that compromise by the Palestinians would not reduce “cruelty,” which he alleged was being caused by Israel. He called Israel “evil” and a “wolf-like entity.” He also called the US “satanic,” one of several increasingly extremist, threatening, hateful and far-right tweets that the Iranian leader posted in recent days.

Palestinian leader Abbas announces end to agreements with Israel and US

P.L.O. Seeks Vatican Assistance in Dealing with Israel over West Bank

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced on Tuesday an end to all agreements and understandings with Israel and the United States, including security agreements, as a result of Israel’s intent to annex parts of the West Bank. Abbas said the Palestinian government was “absolved, as of today, of all the agreements and understandings with the American and Israeli governments and of all the obligations based on these understandings and agreements, including the security ones”. Speaking after an emergency meeting of the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah, the 85-year-old leader said Israeli annexation of any parts of the occupied West Bank would ruin chances for a two-state solution. “The Israeli occupation authority, as of today, has to shoulder all responsibilities and obligations in front of the international community as an occupying power over the territory of the occupied state of Palestine, with all its consequences and repercussions,” said Abbas. Abbas has made multiple previous threats to end security cooperation with Israel without ultimately following through. He did not give any details about what his latest declaration would mean in practice, AFP said.

France warns Israel against partial annexation of West Bank, works with partners ‘for prevention’

A partial annexation of the West Bank by Israel would be a serious violation, France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Wednesday. Paris is working with European partners to come up with a joint action plan for prevention and reprisal should Israel make such a move, he said at a parliament hearing. “For the past few days we have held several video conferences with European colleagues… with a view to deciding on a joint preventive action and eventually a reprisal if such a decision were taken,” Reuters quoted the minister as saying.  The UN Middle East envoy said on Wednesday Israel must abandon its threat to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, branding such a plan as a serious violation of international law. The move would “deal a devastating blow to the two-state solution, close the door to a renewal of negotiations,” Nickolay Mladenov told the Security Council.

Twenty years after Hezbollah pushed Israel’s last troops from southern Lebanon, both sides are gearing up for a possible war that neither seems to want. Israeli troops are striking Hezbollah targets in neighboring Syria and drilling for what could be an invasion of Lebanon. Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese terror group, is beefing up its own forces and threatening to invade Israel. In recent weeks, tens of thousands of Israeli troops have been participating in a massive exercise at the Elyakim military base. On a recent day, four Israeli tanks rumbled up to the edge of a ridge and fired powerful 120-millimeter shells streaking across the valley, scoring direct hits on targets several kilometers (miles) away. Ground troops maneuvered through a mock Lebanese village. Air force, navy and cyber units joined the drill. Friedler, the Israeli commander, said if there is another war, Israel will have no choice but to cross the border to halt Hezbollah fire. He said battling an enemy entrenched in civilian areas is like “fighting with handcuffs on,” but insisted that his troops are ready.

Rocket lands near US embassy inside Baghdad’s Green Zone

A rocket has hit an empty house in the Iraqi capital’s heavily fortified Green Zone, a military statement has said. The rocket was launched from an eastern district of Baghdad, according to the statement, and was the first to land in the high-security zone in weeks. There were no reports of casualties in the attack. The blast could be heard across Baghdad and triggered security sirens at the US embassy compound, security forces told AFP news agency. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. On Sunday, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the US “will not be staying either in Iraq or Syria and must withdraw and will certainly be expelled”.

Turkey is fighting a proxy war in Libya against a series of other countries, including Egypt, the UAE and Russia. This week Turkish-backed fighters aligned with the government in Tripoli took a military base called Watiya. They also captured and destroyed Pantsir Russian-made air defense trucks. This is important because it shows that despite the backing of important countries, the fighters of Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army, which is based in Benghazi, were forced to retreat. Turkish media is celebrating this a great victory. Turkey has recruited poor Syrian rebels to fight in Libya and violates an arms embargo. But Ankara gambles that might make right and western powers are weak. It brushed aside the Americans in Syria, it hosts Hamas, and it can do what it wants in Libya.

The islands sit in a strategic spot between northeast and southeast Asia. Taiwan’s coast guard has a garrison on one. “If they want to seize the island they could encircle the island and force Taiwan to withdraw, without a fight,” said Alexander Huang, strategic studies professor at Tamkang University in Taiwan.

The European Union would be allowed to raise joint debt under an unprecedented coronavirus recovery plan considered a political and fiscal no-go zone only two weeks ago. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron announced the proposal on Monday in a bid to end divisions over how to help Europe recover from the worst recession in living memory and ease simmering tensions that have stoked doubts about the bloc’s effectiveness and its long-term future. It is the first time the two countries have floated a plan to raise joint debt under the EU name, and it represents a significant weakening of Germany’s long-held hawkish fiscal views.

Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI), a major Austrian bank, has confirmed that it is expanding its collaboration with Billon, a Polish-British fintech. This partnership is meant to help in the development of a new type of DLT-based national currency tokenization. Private institutions and tech giants are also working on digitizing national currencies even as global authorities are progressing with the development of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). In that context, RBI is working hard, aiming to create a new form of national currency tokenization. Officials say that the new currency will be powered by blockchain technology. The extension of the collaboration with Billon comes after a successful test of the end-to-end digitized national currency transfers.

   Will Some Churches Be Forced To Close For The Entire Duration Of The COVID-19 Pandemic?

Isn’t it odd that Walmart stores all over the nation have remained open throughout this crisis but we are being told that it is “too risky” to hold a church service in many states?  During this crisis it has often been said that “my rights do not end where your fears begin”, but right now we are witnessing a stunning erosion of our First Amendment rights.  Churches remain closed in many states, and some churches in states that have “reopened” are now being forced to close down again. Whether the current “shelter-in-place” restrictions remain in place or not, and whether we are holding church services or not, the truth is that this virus is going to continue to spread. And it will keep spreading until the vast majority of the U.S. population has been exposed to the virus and herd immunity has been achieved. So shutting down all of our churches is not going to solve anything, but the mainstream media keeps pumping out horror stories about how Christian gatherings are helping to spread COVID-19. But why don’t we ever see any stories about how our major retail stores have become hotbeds for spreading the virus? Without a doubt, it would be much easier to catch COVID-19 in a large retail store than it would be in a church.  Thousands upon thousands of people are constantly streaming through our big stores, and many of them have got to be absolutely teeming with the virus.

  The new coronavirus outbreak in northeastern China

The new coronavirus outbreak in northeastern China, originally dismissed as a minor spate of mostly foreign infections that should not distract from China’s total victory over the Wuhan virus, has grown until 108 million people are under lockdown in the region, according to Bloomberg. Government officials throughout the province have stopped buses and trains from going in and out of the region, and schools have been shut down. Tens of thousands of people are also being quarantined, according to Bloomberg News. On Monday, government officials from Shulan, a city in the province, said it would impose its strictest restrictions yet to try to contain the outbreak, including closing off residential compounds with confirmed and suspected cases. Officials would also allow only one person from each family to leave to buy essential supplies for two hours every two days, according to Bloomberg. The highest-ranking Communist Party official in Shulan was removed along with five other government officials as a result of the new outbreak.

 3 killed as super cyclone Amphan batters India’s West Bengal, Odisha

Three people were killed Wednesday after super cyclone Amphan battered India’s eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha. The super cyclone triggering winds of up to 190 kmph entered West Bengal accompanied with heavy rains, leaving a trail of destruction. Officials said the cyclone after making landfall entered into human habitations blowing away makeshift houses, uprooting electric poles and trees. “The very severe cyclonic storm lay centered at 7:30 p.m. (local time) today, over West Bengal near Latitude 22.6°N and Longitude 88.5°E, close to Kolkata. Super cyclone – Amphan crossed West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts as a very severe cyclonic storm with the speed of 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph across Sunderban near Latitude 21.65°N and Longitude 88.3°E,” reads information released in the bulletin by India Metrological Department (IMD). Authorities said they have evacuated 658,000 people in West Bengal and Odisha ahead of the cyclone. Half a million people were evacuated in West Bengal, and over 158,000 were evacuated in Odisha.

 Israel Swears-In New Unity Government

Israel finally has a new government after more than a year of deadlock, but the new power-sharing administration between the right and centrist wings has not put the political controversy to rest. The Israeli parliament gave its approval to the new unity government Sunday, 73-46. Benjamin Netanyahu will remain prime minister for 18 months. The head of the centrist Blue and White party, Benny Gantz, will be “alternate prime minister,” then they will swap jobs. “The public wants a unity government, and this is what the public is getting today,” Netanyahu said Sunday. “We chose to serve the country together.” Speaking after Netanyahu, Gantz said he chose a unity government over civil war, adding that “the worst political crisis Israel has known is over.” Netanyahu promised a budget that he says “will prevent the economy from collapsing, that will guarantee stability, that will restore growth — a budget that will give you, citizens of Israel, hope, and a horizon, by restoring three things: Jobs, jobs, jobs.” He also says Israel will not back away from plans to annex part of the West Bank.

Fatah calls on Palestinians to prepare for resisting Israel’s annexation plan

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement on Monday called on the Palestinians to be well-prepared to resist an Israeli plan of annexing parts of the West Bank’s territories. Israel Radio had reported that Israel plans to annex the Jordan Valley and some settlements in the West Bank on July, according to a coalition deal reached between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his competitor Benny Gantz. The Central Committee of the leading Fatah Movement, which held a meeting earlier on Monday in Ramallah, said in an emailed press statement that the new Israeli coalition “is adopting destructive policies and positions.” “The committee debated and studied the details on how will be the response to the Israeli annexation plan,” said the statement, adding that “the response will be approved by the Palestinian leadership which will convene on Tuesday.” The statement of Fatah’s Central Committee called on the Palestinian people to get ready and be on alert to confront the upcoming events that will be the result of implementing the Israeli annexation plan.

 Supreme Court to hear petition over Jewish access to Temple Mount

The Supreme Court was due to hear a petition Monday to allow Jews to access to the Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem, which has been temporarily prohibited during the coronavirus crisis. The petitioners, Yehuda Etzion and Arnon Segal, are far-right activists who have been challenging the government to allow free access to the compound, which is holy to both Jews and Muslims. They claim that Israel made an arrangement with the Kingdom of Jordan to keep both Muslims and Jews off the Temple Mount while the coronavirus pandemic was at its height. The applicants’ lawyer, far-right activist Itamar Ben-Gvir, maintained that Jordan’s Waqf (Islamic trust), which has day-to-day control over the Temple Mount, was allowed back while Jews were still banned. The petitioners argue that preventing Jews from ascending while Muslims are allowed up is unconstitutional. They further claimed that banning Segal, who is also a journalist, was a violation of the freedom of the press.

Jordan’s king warns of ‘massive conflict’ if Israel annexes land in West Bank

Jordan’s King Abdullah has warned that should Israel move forward with plans to annex parts of the West Bank, it would lead to a “massive conflict” with his country, and did not rule out pulling out of Amman’s peace deal with the Jewish state. In an interview published Friday by the German daily Der Spiegel, Abdullah insisted that a two-state solution was “the only way forward” in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “What would happen if the Palestinian National Authority collapsed? There would be more chaos and extremism in the region. If Israel really annexed the West Bank in July, it would lead to a massive conflict with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan,” he said, when asked by his interviewer about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s intention to “take advantage of the opportunity that [US President Donald] Trump has created to seize large parts of Palestine.” Jordan has been lobbying the EU to take “practical steps” to make sure annexation doesn’t happen. In a statement, Safadi “stressed the need for the international community and the European Union in particular to take practical steps that reflect the rejection of any Israeli decision to annex.”

  Taliban suicide bomber kills 9 troops in eastern Afghanistan

A suicide bomber in a stolen military Humvee targeted a base in eastern Afghanistan belonging to the country’s intelligence service early on Monday, killing at least seven members of the force, a provincial official said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. At least 40 members of the force were wounded in the attack near the city of Ghazni, the provincial capital of Ghazni, according to Arif Noori, the spokesman for the provincial governor. Eight of the wounded were in critical condition and were transferred to the capital, Kabul, for further treatment, Noori added. He said the bomber used a stolen military Humvee and detonated his vehicle full of explosives as he approached the main gate of the entrance. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the insurgents were behind the attack in Ghazni province, where the Taliban control most of the countryside and the rural areas.

Bombs kill 7 in shelter for displaced in Libya

Bombs hit a shelter for displaced people in Libya’s capital Tripoli, killing at least seven people including a 5-year-old child from Bangladesh, health authorities said Sunday. The shelling of the facility in the city’s Furnaj district late Saturday also wounded at least 17 people, including a 52-year-old Bengali migrant and his 5-year-old child, Malek Merset, said a spokesman for the capital’s Field Medicine and Support Center. The man is also the father of the dead child. It was the latest attack on civilians in the fighting over Tripoli between eastern-based forces under military commander Khalifa Hifter and an array of militias loosely allied with the U.N.-supported but weak government in the capital.

Japan has fallen into recession for the first time since 2015 as the financial toll of the coronavirus continues to escalate. The world’s third biggest economy shrank at an annual pace of 3.4% in the first three months of 2020. The coronavirus is wreaking havoc on the global economy with an estimated cost of up to $8.8tn (£7.1tn). Last week, Germany slipped into recession as more major economies face the impact of sustained lockdowns. Japan did not go into full national lockdown, but issued a state of emergency in April which severely affected supply chains and businesses in the trade-reliant nation. The 3.4% fall in growth domestic product (GDP) for the first three months of 2020, follows a 6.4% decline during the last quarter of 2019, pushing Japan into a technical recession.

    Visa Files Patent for Digital Fiat Currency

American finance service corporation VISA has filed a patent application to create blockchain-based digital fiat currency. The patent application was filed to the United States Patent and Trademark Office last Thursday. According to it, the fiat-pegged digital currency could replace physical money. Furthermore, the new system of a digital fiat currency might be used by central banks and merge the benefits of both fiat and cryptocurrencies. According to the text of the application, the VISA aims to digitize any financial system by minting digital fiat currency and ensuring the “removal of the physical currency from circulation in a fiat currency system”. The whole process should be implemented and managed by the “central entity computer”. As specified in the application, the digital version of the fiat would be identical to the physical fiat. Moreover, the denomination and serial numbers could be kept the same as well. The filing reveals, that the central entity might be linked with the governments of various jurisdictions. The application does not specify, what exactly the central entity could be, however, it gives a hint that it might be the central bank that implements monetary policy and regulates the monetary supply.

  US Navy grants first waiver for transgender service member to serve under their preferred gender

The US Navy has granted a waiver allowing a transgender service member to serve “in their preferred gender” for the first time since the military enacted a transgender ban. “The acting Secretary of the Navy has approved a specific request for exemption related to military service by transgender persons and persons with gender dysphoria,” Navy spokeswoman Lt. Brittany Stephens told CNN. Stephens added that “this service member requested a waiver to serve in their preferred gender, to include obtaining a gender marker change in (the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) and being allowed to adhere to standards associated with their preferred gender, such as uniforms and grooming.” The GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders and the National Center for Lesbian Rights said Friday that the waiver was granted to their client, a Naval officer who filed a lawsuit in March against the ban.

Mandatory coronavirus vaccination looming on the horizon

Since the coronavirus outbreak, the profile of the World Health Organization has skyrocketed, and so have suspicions about its motives and alliances. Which is why this year’s annual meeting of the organization’s members – which is slated to begin on Monday – should get interesting. The coronavirus will be the focus for the World Health Assembly meeting, to be attended by all 194 WHO member states plus observers, and where policies and budgets are reviewed and approved. But all eyes will be on how countries – including the US, Australia, Canada, France and Germany – pursue an investigation into China’s handling of the pandemic within the framework of the global health body. That could include taking the Chinese government to the international court. Leaders of these countries have already made clear that they want an inquiry, including investigating the origin of the virus, whether it was initially covered up by China, and if Beijing was slow to tell the world that the virus was being transmitted between humans. The WHO has itself been under fire, attacked for praising China’s pandemic response as “transparent” despite Beijing’s suppression of whistle-blowers and information at the start of the outbreak.

Coronavirus Vaccine Trial by Moderna Shows Promising Early Results

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — Advancing an mRNA-based antibody combination to help prevent HIV infection

The first coronavirus vaccine to be tested in people appears to be safe and able to stimulate an immune response against the virus, its manufacturer, Moderna announced on Monday. The findings are based on results from the first eight people who each received two doses of the vaccine, starting in March. Those people, healthy volunteers, made antibodies that were then tested in human cells in the lab, and were able to stop the virus from replicating — the key requirement for an effective vaccine. The levels of those so-called neutralizing antibodies matched the levels found in patients who had recovered after contracting the virus in the community. The company has said that it is proceeding on an accelerated timetable, with the second phase involving 600 people to begin soon, and a third phase to begin in July involving thousands of healthy people. The Food and Drug Administration gave Moderna the go-ahead for the second phase earlier this month.

This is one of the most extreme rapid intensifications of tropical systems on Earth. It’s likely that Amphan will continue intensifying over the next couple of hours, reaching maximum sustained wind speeds of 270 km/h (170 mph) and gusts to 325 km/h (200 mph) by 18:00 UTC. As of 09:00 UTC, Super Cyclonic Storm “Amphan” was located about 730 km (450 miles) south of Paradip, Odisha, 890 km (550 miles) SSW of Digha, West Bengal, and 1 010 km (630 miles) SSW of Khepupara, Bangladesh. The system was moving N at 7 km/h (4 mph).

This passage seems to indicate a common experience in real-world crises: war and famine give way to inflation due to supply and demand. A denarius in the first century was usually equal to a day’s wages, and the amount of grain given here is just enough to keep a person alive. These are also the commodities of the common person: basic staples for living. The implication seems to be that most people in this part of the tribulation are struggling just to meet their basic survival needs. This is the kind of poverty which threatens a person’s life, not merely their lifestyle. 

Joel 1:17-20 ¹⁷ The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered.¹⁸ How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.¹⁹ O Lord, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.²⁰ The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

President Trump and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are readying to create history together on 1 July when Israel restores Jewish sovereignty after 3000 years in 1697km² of territory comprising 30% of Judea and Samaria – the Jewish People’s biblical and ancient heartland. About 65000 Arabs – 5% of the Arab population of Judea and Samaria – and 450000 Jews live in the area proposed for Jewish sovereignty. The road forward has been made possible after Netanyahu was unanimously confirmed as Israel’s next Prime Minister by 11 judges of Israel’s Supreme Court. Meanwhile, France urged its European Union partners on Monday to consider threatening Israel with a tough response if it will extend its sovereignty over parts of the West Bank, three EU diplomats said. Belgium, Ireland, and Luxembourg also want to discuss the possibility of punitive economic measures during a foreign ministers’ meeting on Friday, the diplomats told Reuters, though all member states would have to agree to any collective action.

 Clashes kill two in separate West Bank incidents

A sudden surge in violence has left two dead over two days in the West Bank, a 21-year-old Israeli soldier struck by a rock Tuesday in the village of Yabad and a 15-year-old Palestinian who was shot during unrest early Wednesday in the Fawwar refugee camp, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials. The clashes come as Israel prepares to swear in a new government Thursday, and amid rising tensions as the country moves ahead with possible plans to formally annex dozens of Jewish settlements built in the West Bank over the past decades. Palestinian officials, including members of Hamas, the ruling militant group in the Gaza Strip, have warned that the action could spark an increase of violence in the contested territories, where clashes have been relatively rare in recent months.

 Turkey accuses five nations of forming ‘alliance of evil’

Turkey on Tuesday accused Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, France and the United Arab Emirates of seeking to form an “alliance of evil” after these countries issued a joint declaration denouncing Ankara’s policies in the eastern Mediterranean and Libya.  In a strongly-worded statement, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said the five countries were pursuing “regional chaos and instability” in the eastern Mediterranean and sacrificing Libyans’ “hope for democracy for the reckless aggression of dictators.” The foreign ministers of the five countries held a teleconference on Monday to discuss the situation in the eastern Mediterranean, where Turkey has been drilling for potential hydrocarbon deposits in an offshore area where Cyprus has exclusive economic rights, as well as the situation in Libya.

Russia opposes any new US attempts at UN to punish Iran

Russia’s U.N. ambassador said Tuesday that Moscow will oppose any attempts by the United States to extend the arms embargo on Iran and reimpose U.N. sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Vassily Nebenzia’s comments at a video news conference made clear that the Trump administration will have a tough time advancing any measures to impose further punishment on Iran in the U.N. Security Council, where Russia has veto power. The United States circulated a draft U.N. resolution that would indefinitely extend the U.N. arms embargo on Iran, which expires in October, to a small number of council members in late April.

Dozens killed in attacks on Afghanistan maternity ward, funeral

Dozens of people, mostly civilians, have been killed in a series of attacks in Afghanistan conducted over the past 24 hours, including a siege Tuesday on a hospital in Kabul that resulted in the deaths of mothers and babies, authorities said. At least 14 people, including two newborns, mothers and medical staff, were killed Tuesday when gunmen stormed one of Kabul’s busiest hospitals, which contained a maternity ward run by Doctors Without Borders. Shortly after in the eastern province of Nangarhar, at least 26 people were killed and 68 others were injured after a suicide bomber attacked the funeral of a local police commander. In response, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani ordered security forces to resume offensive operations against the Taliban. “I strongly condemn recent attacks in a hospital in Kabul and Nangarhar province, which killed a number of innocent people, including women and children,” he said Tuesday in a national address. “Taliban have rejected our repeated calls for a cease-fire, calls for cease-fire don’t mean weakness.” Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Aryan told CBS News the attack also left some new mothers and nurses dead at the maternity clinic. Fifteen people sustained injuries.

World Bank Emphasizes Blockchain for Financial Inclusion

The Bank of Mauritius is progressing toward providing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) per its governor, CoinDesk reported. Harvesh Seegolam, bank governor, said at a virtual conference, “At the level of the Bank of Mauritius, we’re currently working on a project and very shortly we’ll be making announcements … with respect to a potential introduction of a CBDC.” Seegolam noted that any digital currency would need to be distributed via the current banking system to steer clear of the risk of putting the island’s financial system in an uneven position. The island’s study into a CBDC was reportedly first revealed by Yandraduth Googoolye, a prior governor. Meanwhile, the World Bank has emphasized the importance of blockchain in enabling financial inclusion. It provides a detailed overview of selected technology innovations that are considered critical for use in payments while highlighting the associated risks and benefits. This also includes crypto blockchain-related concepts such as central bank digital currencies (CBDC) and stablecoins.

More Americans turning to drugs and alcohol as coronavirus stress rises, survey shows

With coronavirus-related stress on the rise, so is alcohol and drug use, according to a national survey. Findings by The Recovery Village, a Florida-based network of addiction treatment facilities, reflect an “expected” increase in substance use during the pandemic, with Americans reporting a 55% rise in alcohol consumption in the last month. When it came to illicit drugs, 36% of Americans reported increased use of marijuana and prescription opioids, among others. “Experts have already started to voice concerns on the secondary effects America is yet to see from COVID-19,” researchers wrote, among them being “increased rates of addiction afterward due to the stress of isolation, boredom, decreased access to recovery resources and unemployment.”

Tanzania Kicks Out WHO After Goat & Papaya Samples Came COVID-19 Positive

With the rise in false Coronavirus cases, the Tanzanian President John Magufuli growing suspicious of the World Health Organization (WHO), decided to investigate the claims himself. He sent the WHO samples of a goat, a papaya and a quail for testing. The samples were given human names and ages and were submitted to the country’s National Referral Laboratory to test for coronavirus without the lab technicians knowing the true identity of the samples. After all 3 samples came COVID-19 positive, the President is reported to have kicked out the WHO from the country.

CHEO doctors on alert for mysterious COVID-19-related illness in children

DOD Awards $138 Million Contract, Enabling Prefilled Syringes for Future COVID-19 Vaccine

Doctors at CHEO are looking out for cases of a mysterious syndrome apparently related to COVID-19 that has been seen in children in the U.K., Montreal and New York, among other places hard-hit by the pandemic. There have been no cases in Ottawa, but CHEO infectious disease physician Dr. Jason Brophy said doctors here are prepared. “All of us are watching closely what the experience in other centres is so we can be prepared when and if we see a case in the Ottawa area.” The multi-system inflammatory syndrome, or hyperinflammatory shock, as it is being called, appears to be a post-infection syndrome related to COVID-19, although most of the children whose cases were described in a just-published U.K. paper did not test positive for COVID-19. There have been reports of similar cases in New York and Montreal, among other centres. The cases appear to result from an over-activation of the immune system that affects multiple systems in the body, said Brophy.

   Severe storms spawn damaging tornadoes and hail in northern Mexico

Parts of northern Mexico were struck by hail and tornadoes as storms hit over the past few days– one twister ripped through Apodaca in Nuevo Leon on Saturday afternoon, May 9, 2020, and another in Juarez, Chihuahua, on Monday afternoon, May 11. Two fatalities, at least five injuries, and extensive damage were reported, as well as landslides and flooding that led to road closures. The tornado on Saturday came as a cold front swept through the state, leading to a drastic drop in temperatures from 37 to 21 °C (98.6 to 69.8 °F), according to Miguel Angel Gallegos of the National Meteorological Service. The storm began around 22:00 UTC (17:00 LT), dumping up to 60 mm (2.3 inches) of rain before it moved away. The Monterrey-Saltillo highway had to be closed in both directions due to a landslide.

 2 earthquakes shake Israel’s north within hour

The epicenter of the tremblors was said to be in the Mediterranean Sea, west of southern Lebanon. The Geophysical Institute said the first earthquake, which occurred at 5:38am, measured 3.2 in magnitude and its epicenter was some 14 km (8.6 miles) north of Beit She’an in the north. Beit She’an has a unique geographical setting due to being located at the junction of the Jordan River Valley and the Jezreel Valley. The second tremblor took place around 6:53 am and measured 2.7 in magnitude. Its exact epicenter is said to have been some 54km (33 miles) north of Nahariya the northernmost coastal city in Israel.

   Dozens die in attack on Syrian troops at edge of rebel stronghold

Al-Qaeda-linked fighters attacked Syrian government positions Sunday on the edge of the country’s last rebel stronghold, triggering intense clashes that killed nearly three dozen combatants across both sides, opposition activists said. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said members of the al-Qaeda-linked group known as Horas al-Din attacked government forces in the Ghab plain area. It said the fighting left 21 troops and 13 Horas al-Din members dead.

19 Iranians killed, 15 injured after Navy vessel hit by friendly fire

Nineteen Iranians were killed and 15 others were injured after an Iranian naval vessel was reportedly hit by friendly fire during a naval exercise on Sunday. The IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency reported that the “accident” involving the Konarak support vessel took place in the waters off Jask Port in the Gulf of Oman. Two of the wounded are in intensive care units and the others are in stable condition, according to Fars News Agency. The military stressed that the incident was being investigated by “expert teams” and that “any speculation” about the incident should be avoided. Initial reports from Iran stated that the Konarak was “sunk” by a missile fired by Iran’s Jamaran frigate resulting in a number of seamen being killed or missing, according to Radio Farda. Some reports indicated dozens of injuries and deaths, with about 40 military personnel estimated to have been on board at the time.

Turkey Threatens Retaliation Against Haftar’s Forces in Libya

Shelling of Tripoli’s airport hit fuel tanks and damaged passenger planes after forces loyal to Libya’s renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar fired dozens of rockets into Tripoli. Six people were killed and dozens of others wounded in the attacks, the interior ministry said in a statement, which included as many as 80 rocket strikes. The transport ministry said one of the damaged planes was preparing to fly to Spain to retrieve Libyans stranded in Europe by the coronavirus lockdown. Video shared by an airport worker showed black smoke billowing over the apron. Photographs showed shrapnel damage sprayed across the nose of a passenger plane. The attack on Saturday was the latest to target Mitiga International Airport in Libya’s capital, the seat of the country’s internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA). Haftar’s eastern-based forces have been trying to seize Tripoli since April last year.

Riot police clashed with hundreds of protesters in Berlin yesterday during a demonstration against coronavirus lockdown in Germany. Despite the central government easing lockdown on Wednesday, infected cases have begun to rise in Germany again, with some states saying they will not lift measures if the numbers continue to spike. Overall infections rose by 1,251 cases yesterday with 147 new deaths. In Berlin, hundreds of protesters swarmed Alexanderplatz, defying the government’s limit of 50 people for outside gatherings, clashing with riot officers and shouting ‘Wir sind das Volk!’ [‘We are the people!’] and ‘Freiheit!’ [‘Freedom!’].

 Hong Kong: Hundreds arrested as protest movement returns

Some 230 people were arrested in protests over the weekend in Hong Kong, local authorities said on Monday. Pro-democracy demonstrations have picked back up in the city after weeks of under a coronavirus-related lockdown. Police said the detainees were between the ages of 12 and 65, and the charges ranged from assaulting an officer to failure to provide proof of identity. Democratic lawmaker Roy Kwong was amongst those arrested, officers said he was being charged with disorderly conduct. Video showed him being surrounded by police and pushed to the ground. On Sunday, protestors had gathered for a sing-along event at a shopping mall when hundreds of riot police were called in to disperse the crowd. According to police, they also blocked roads in the city’s Mongkok district and started fires. Onlookers and journalists also got caught up in the ensuing clashes, with police firing tear gas at reporters and activists alike.

Indian and Chinese troops ‘clash on border’ in Sikkim

Dozens of Indian and Chinese soldiers have exchanged physical blows in a clash on the shared border, Indian media report. Seven Chinese and four Indian troops were injured, an army official reportedly said, near the Naku La sector in the border state of Sikkim. Local commanders spoke and resolved the dispute, which took place on Saturday. The two countries have competing claims over their shared 3,400 kilometre (2,100 mile) border.

Certainly, it would be wonderful if the economy would experience a quick recovery. It would be wonderful if unemployment levels actually bounce back immediately to where they were in early March 2020. There is no limit of commentators, experts and analysts who proclaim that these things will indeed come true. But it’s getting harder and harder to ignore the warnings because it’s getting harder and harder to ignore the data. Despite the rosy scenarios, research and data clearly indicate that (1) a huge portion of the job losses are indeed permanent; (2) the coronavirus recession—arguably a depression—will last much longer than many are prepared to admit; and (3) the unemployment numbers are actually higher than currently reported.

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered meat processing plants to stay open to protect the nation’s food supply even as workers got sick and died. Yet the plants have increasingly been exporting to China while U.S. consumers face shortages, a Reuters analysis of government data showed. Trump, who is in an acrimonious public dispute with Beijing over its handling of the coronavirus outbreak, invoked the 1950 Defense Production Act on April 28 to keep plants open. Now he is facing criticism from some lawmakers, consumers and plant employees for putting workers at risk in part to help ensure China’s meat supply. “We know that over time exports are critically important.    “Snow in Central Park! In May!”: Rare snowfall ties 1977 record, National Weather Service says

Snow fell in Central Park early Saturday morning, tying a record for May snowfall set in 1977, according to the National Weather Service. “In New York City at Central Park this morning, it was- it tied for the latest snowfall we’ve ever seen,” said CBS News meteorologist Jeff Berardelli on “CBS This Morning: Saturday.” In upstate New York, a significant amount of snow left the region looking like a winter wonderland – in the middle of spring. According to Berardelli, the disorienting May weather is due to the polar vortex, which normally only touches down in the winter. The strange weather will extend throughout Mother’s Day weekend, according to Berardelli, as freeze watches are in place from the Midwest to the Northeast. More records could be shattered early in the week, as temperatures are expected to plummet again early Tuesday morning. “This cold front is forecast to reinforce the abnormally cold air-mass in the eastern U.S. to kick-off the upcoming week,” according to the National Weather Service.

A Series Of Large Earthquakes Is Rocking “The Ring Of Fire”

Within the past several days, large earthquakes have been striking all along the outer rim of the Pacific Ocean, and many are wondering if all of this activity could potentially be building up to something really big. You may not have heard about it yet, but a magnitude 4.5 earthquake rocked San Diego on Sunday afternoon.  That is a rather large quake for that particular area, and it is just one of hundreds that have been hitting the region.  In fact, CalTech says that there have been 1,227 earthquakes in California and Nevada over the last 7 days. Meanwhile, the section of the Ring of Fire that runs along the west coast of South America has also been getting hit pretty hard.  A magnitude 5.4 quake struck northern Chile on Sunday, and that really shook a lot of people up. Subsequently, the portion of the Ring of Fire that runs along the coast of Japan was hit by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake very late on Sunday. And that unusual event in Japan was very quickly followed by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in Indonesia.

 Gaza militants fire rocket at Israel, IDF responds hitting Hamas posts

A rocket was fired late Tuesday from the Gaza Strip at Israeli border communities the IDF said adding that the rocket landed in an open field and caused no injuries or damage. Israel responded with tank fire at three military posts of the Hamas terror group.  The rocket fire came after relative calm on the border since late March when Gaza militants fired a rocket into Israel. Negotiations are reported to be taking place for the release of the remains of two Israeli soldiers believed dead and two other civilians believed to be held by Hamas in exchange for prisoners held in Israeli jails. According to the German Die Zeit news site report Wednesday, German and Swiss negotiators are trying to broker the deal between Israel, Egypt and the Hamas rulers of the strip.

Fifty Percent Spike in North American Jews Interested in Immigrating to Israel Amid Virus

April saw a 50 percent increase in the number of application requests from the U.S. for immigration to Israel compared with the same month last year, and that number is expected to grow, a report in the Hebrew-language Makor Rishon newspaper said. A total of 455 aliyah requests were filed by North American Jews in April in comparison with last year’s 302, aliyah (immigration to Israel) group Nefesh B’Nefesh said, according to Makor Rishon. Nativ, which organizes aliyah from the former Soviet Union, said it had received 20,000 new immigration requests following the coronavirus crisis outbreak, compared with 6,000 beforehand. The Jewish Agency, which is in charge of facilitating aliyah from most of the world, projected a 30 percent rise over the next two years as a result of the pandemic. Jewish Agency officials met with officials Ministry of Immigration and Absorption representatives to discuss measures to prepare for the influx.

‘Building momentum’: Israel approves plans for thousands of new homes in West Bank

Israel announced a plan for thousands of new Jewish settlement homes in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, Reuters reports, as Washington voiced its readiness to back de facto Israeli annexations there. PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who is trying to clinch a deal to form a coalition government, wants to start cabinet discussions on July 1 about declaring Israeli sovereignty over the settlements and the strategically important Jordan Valley in the West Bank. Fresh construction for the settlement of Efrat was approved on land that could accommodate “around 7,000 housing units,” Defense Minister Naftali Bennett’s office said. “The building momentum in the country must not be stopped, even for a second,” tweeted Bennett.

Alleged Israeli airstrikes targeted a research center and a military base in Syria on Monday night where Iranian militias are based, the fifth such strike in two weeks, according to Syrian media. Further airstrikes by unidentified aircraft on Iranian militias were reported near the Syria-Iraq border shortly after. A source from the Syrian military told the Syrian state news agency SANA that “hostile aircraft” coming from Al-Thawrah, southeast of Aleppo, attacked military depots in the Al-Safira area. Syrian air defenses were activated in response. Earlier, SANA reported that the scientific research center in Aleppo was targeted in the strikes.

Iranian, Palestinian militias in Aleppo evacuate after airstrikes

The Iranian-backed Baqir brigade began relocating its military headquarters in Aleppo on Tuesday after alleged Israeli airstrikes targeted a research center in the city this week, according to the Step News Agency. The brigade erected checkpoints at the southern and eastern entrances of the city, began checking the identities of passers-by and searching vehicles. The headquarters are being moved from within the city to a new area in the city’s outskirts due to fears of being targeted by Israeli airstrikes. The formerly Iranian-backed and currently Russian-backed Palestinian Liwa al-Quds (Jerusalem Brigade) militia in Aleppo also issued a similar security alert recently in the Bab al-Nairab neighborhood of Aleppo, according to Step. Non-residents were prevented from entering the area by the brigade, which is also working to move its headquarters outside of the neighborhood. For the first time since Iran entered Syria with thousands of troops and militia fighters, the Islamic Republic is reducing its forces and clearing out from bases in the war-torn country, a senior defense source said Tuesday.

Three rockets fall near Baghdad Airport

Three Katyusha rockets landed in the perimeter of Baghdad International Airport on Wednesday but caused no damage or casualties, the Iraqi military said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Security officials said it was not immediately clear whether a military base hosting U.S. troops next to the airport was the target. After Wednesday’s attack the military said it found a rocket launcher with a timer in a rural area in western Baghdad, and there were no reported damages or casualties. The rockets were fired from the Bakriya neighborhood, about 6 km (4 miles) northeast of the airport, and security forces were deployed to search the area, security sources said.

Iran’s Rouhani pledges “crushing response” if U.S. extends arms embargo

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani threatened a “crushing response” on Wednesday if the United States goes ahead with plans to extend an embargo on Iranian trade of conventional arms, which the United Nations is set to lift later this year. Under Iran’s deal with world powers to accept limits to its nuclear program in return for the lifting of sanctions, a U.N. weapons embargo is due to expire in October. The United States, which exited the deal in 2018, says it wants to extend the embargo. In a speech on Wednesday, Rouhani repeated Iran’s longstanding criticism of Washington’s decision to exit the nuclear deal, which he called a “stupid mistake”. “If America wants to return to the deal, it should lift all the sanctions on Tehran and compensate for the reimposition of sanctions,” said Rouhani, a pragmatist whose rhetoric towards the United States is frequently more measured than that of some officials. “Iran will give a crushing response if the arms embargo on Tehran is extended,” Rouhani added.

An internal Chinese report warns that Beijing faces a rising wave of hostility in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak that could tip relations with the United States into confrontation, people familiar with the paper told Reuters. The report, presented early last month by the Ministry of State Security to top Beijing leaders including President Xi Jinping, concluded that global anti-China sentiment is at its highest since the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, the sources said. As a result, Beijing faces a wave of anti-China sentiment led by the United States in the aftermath of the pandemic and needs to be prepared in a worst-case scenario for armed confrontation between the two global powers, according to people familiar with the report’s content, who declined to be identified given the sensitivity of the matter. The report was drawn up by the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), a think tank affiliated with the Ministry of State Security, China’s top intelligence body.

The Venezuelan government has said it foiled an attempted sea incursion by “terrorist mercenaries” from Colombia. In a televised address, Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said the group arrived on speedboats at the coastal state of La Guaira early on Sunday. President Nicolás Maduro often accuses adversaries of attempting to overthrow him with the backing of the US. Venezuela’s opposition dismissed the allegations, saying the apparent incursion was staged. Colombia described the government’s assertion as unfounded. Venezuela broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia last year. In the Venezuelan government’s statement, Mr Reverol said the group had landed in the town of Macuto, about 21 miles (34km) north of the capital Caracas. “They tried to carry out an invasion by sea, a group of terrorist mercenaries from Colombia, in order to commit terrorist acts in the country, murdering leaders of the revolutionary government,” he said. Diosdado Cabello, leader of the ruling Socialist Party, said eight people were killed and two were detained, while Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino said a speedboat had sunk and military vessels were searching the coast for survivors.

The U.S. Treasury is boosting the amount of debt it plans to issue in the coming quarterly refunding auctions to a record $96 billion to provide government funding as the economy heads into a recession caused by the coronavirus. The department said Wednesday it anticipates auctioning the first re-booted 20-year bond on May 20, with an expected initial offering size of $20 billion — larger than most analysts projected. It also unveiled plans to boost overall issuance with a focus on increases to longer-term debt. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s plans for unprecedented debt issuance come as the Trump administration braces for what it sees as a 40% contraction in economic growth in the second quarter. The federal deficit is set to surpass estimates of $4 trillion for this year as lawmakers discuss additional economic stimulus. The Treasury said its “borrowing needs have increased substantially as a result of the federal government’s response to the Covid-19 outbreak.” It said it has raised an “unprecedented” $1.46 trillion on net since the end of March.

  Beef Prices Explode To Record High As More Stores Limit Meat Purchases

Just a few days ago we marveled as wholesale beef prices had soared over 60% from their February lows to a record $331 per 100 pounds. Well, that was then, because today alone, the wholesale price soared by 8.6% or $32.60 to a new all time high of $410.05, almost doubling in less than a month. The reason: an unprecedented collapse of the nation’s food supply chain as over a dozen meat processing plants have been shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic. Beef prices are soaring even after Trump issued an executive order  to address meat shortages, however with food workers scared and unwilling to return to work, Trump’s attempt to normalize prices has backfired, because all it has achieved was a frantic scramble by consumers to hoard beef resulting in even bigger shortages and higher prices. Call it a bacon run. As a result of the wave of panic-shopping at supermarkets, more grocery stores are imposing limits on meat purchases. On Friday, we reported that supermarket chain Kroger said that it has put “purchase limits” on ground beef and fresh pork at some of its stores following growing concerns over meat shortages due to coronavirus-induced supply disruptions. Other large grocers said they expect to be out of stock on different types of cuts soon.

It isn’t for us to define the precise use of this technology, that is a decision to be taken by governments. But as new scientific evidence comes to light and response strategies evolve, we are ready to work with governments and corporations to apply this technology, when they deem the time is right.” Health n Go is designed to safely deliver digital health certificates from a trusted authority such as a doctor or health organisation. Each time a health certificate is issued in the platform, a unique, encrypted and completely traceable identity is attached to it. Individuals will keep their health certificates on a specific wallet on their smartphone, which can be shown on request and the QR code read by a scanner.

China Moves to Wean Itself of US Dollar Dependence, Steps Up Testing of Sovereign Digital Currency

As China expands globally, seeking significant financial autonomy and less dependency on America amid its trade war with Washington, the country has long sought to wean itself from the US-dollar dominated financial system. Finally, after years of effort, China is gearing up to release the world’s first sovereign digital currency – DCEP (short for Digital Currency/Electronic Payments). China’s central bank launched a trial program across four cities – Shenzhen, Suzhou, Xiongan and Chengdu – to test the use of its digital currency, touted as incorporating some features of cryptocurrencies, but lacking the anonymity of such digital assets, the Digital Currency Research Institute of the People’s Bank of China confirmed to the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

A Kansas City phased reopening guideline requiring churches to keep “lists” of attendees, has alarmed many who see it as an infringement on religious liberty and privacy. In the policy issued by Mayor Quinton Lucas, houses of worship are treated with the same restrictions as “non-essential” businesses in terms of keeping records of who attends a service, or even anyone who enters the building. “Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined Nazi-like measures designed to surveil, track and spy upon what was once a free American people,” states Liberty Council, founder and Chairman Matt Staver, who didn’t mince words. “That is exactly what Kansas City’s misguided government officials are now demanding.” The new policy states “In-person religious gatherings (including weddings and funerals) may resume, subject to the 10/10/10 rule (if held inside) or limited to 50 people outside, provided social distancing precautions are followed and event organizers maintain records of all attendees.” But it is not the limit on people that has drawn the most concern, but the record keeping. The new rule requires all churches to “record the names, contact information, and approximate entry/exit time of all customers who are on premises for more than 10 minutes.” That includes churches, synagogues, and mosques along with businesses. Only medical facilities and grocery stores are exempt.

   “Murder hornets” have now entered the U.S. — and they could decimate the honeybee population

A roughly 2-inch long insect known as the “murder hornet” has made its way to the U.S. for the first time ever, researchers said. The Asian giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia, has been known to kill up to 50 people a year in Japan, according to The New York Times, and has the potential to devastate U.S. bee populations, which have already been declining. Susan Cobey, bee breeder with Washington State University’s Department of Entomology, told WSU Insider that the hornets are “like something out of a monster cartoon with this huge yellow-orange face.” The hornets made their way to the U.S. for the first time in December, when the Washington State Department of Agriculture verified four reports of sightings. The hornets were also spotted in two locations in British Columbia in the fall, according to WSDA.

A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2020 JJ flew past Earth at a very close distance of 0.03 LD / 0.0000896 AU (13 403 km / 8 328 miles) at 12:05 UTC on May 4, 2020. This is the 40^th known asteroid to flyby Earth since the start of the year and the second of the month. This is also the closest asteroid flyby since October 31, 2019 (2019 UN13), and the 6^th closest asteroid flyby on record. 2020 JJ belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids. It was first observed at Mt. Lemmon Survey, Arizona just a couple of hours before its close approach. The object has an estimated diameter between 2.7 and 6 m (8.8 to 19.7 feet).

 Arab League calls urgent meeting to torpedo Israel’s annexation plans

The Arab League will hold a virtual meeting to discuss how to organize opposition to Israel’s plan to annex large swathes of Judea and Samaria, it announced on Monday. The meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday, will be carried out by video conference and include the participation of Arab foreign ministers from across the Middle East. The ministers will “discuss in their virtual meeting providing political, legal and financial support to the Palestinian leadership to confront the Israeli plans,” the Arab League’s deputy secretary Hossam Zaki said. The meeting was called at the request of the Palestinian Authority. Last week, the Arab League’s Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres that Israel’s plans risked “igniting tension in the region.” He accused Israel of “exploiting the world’s preoccupation with the novel coronavirus to impose a new reality on the ground.”

Syria reports Israeli missile attack near Damascus, 7 killed

Israel attacked an ammunition dump south of Damascus early on Monday, SANA, Syria’s official news agency, reports. The attack took place at around 5:00 a.m., a Syrian military source told SANA. The source said that most of the Israeli missiles were intercepted and shot down. Nevertheless, reports from Damascus said that large explosions were heard from the ammunition dump. The missiles were launched from Lebanese air space, according to the report. Israel has attacked from Lebanese air space before. The report, quoting the military source, initially said that there were no human casualties. However, SANA later said, “Three civilians were martyred and four others wounded, including a child, because shrapnel from Israeli missiles fell on houses.” It later raised the number to seven. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based opposition war monitoring group, said the Israeli missile strike targeted an Iranian stronghold near the capital that housed its forces. Israel did not confirm or deny the report. However, Arutz 7 reports that Defense Minister Naftali Bennett “alluded” to a coming operation against Iranian forces based in Syria.

German police wearing riot gear and face masks tussled on Saturday with dozens of protesters demonstrating in central Berlin against the coronavirus lockdown on public life. Protesters shouted “I want my life back” and held up signs with slogans such as “Protect constitutional rights”, “Freedom isn’t everything but without freedom, everything is nothing”, and “Daddy, what is a kiss?” Police said on Twitter they had arrested more than 100 people. Like dozens of countries around the globe, Germany has put in place strict curbs on public activity to slow transmission of COVID-19, imposing its lockdown on March 17.

  Yemen war: Separatists declare autonomous rule in south

Separatists in southern Yemen have declared self-rule, breaking a peace deal signed in November with the internationally recognised government.The Aden-based Southern Transitional Council (STC) declared a state of emergency, saying it would govern the port city and other southern provinces. The STC is supported by the United Arab Emirates. The Saudi-backed Yemeni government warned of “dangerous and catastrophic consequences”. “The announcement by the so-called transitional council of its intention to establish a southern administration is a resumption of its armed insurgency… and an announcement of its rejection and complete withdrawal from the Riyadh agreement,” Yemen’s Foreign Minister Mohammed Al-Hadhrami said in a statement.

The shuttering of the U.S. economy due to the coronavirus pandemic is a shock of historic proportions that will likely push the national unemployment rate to 16% or higher this month and require more stimulus to ensure a strong rebound, a White House economic adviser said on Sunday. “It’s a really grave situation,” President Donald Trump’s adviser, Kevin Hassett, told the ABC program “This Week.” “This is the biggest negative shock that our economy, I think, has ever seen. Plant shutdowns are leaving the U.S. dangerously close to meat shortages as coronavirus outbreaks spread to suppliers across the nation and the Americas. Almost a third of U.S. pork capacity is down, the first big poultry plants closed on Friday and experts are warning that domestic shortages are just weeks away. Brazil, the world’s No. 1 shipper of chicken and beef, saw its first major closure with the halt of a poultry plant owned by JBS SA, the world’s biggest meat company. Key operations are also down in Canada, the latest being a British Columbia poultry plant. While hundreds of plants in the Americas are still running, the staggering acceleration of supply disruptions is now raising questions over global shortfalls. Taken together, the U.S., Brazil and Canada account for about 65% of world meat trade. “It’s absolutely unprecedented,” said Brett Stuart, president of Denver-based consulting firm Global AgriTrends. “It’s a lose-lose situation where we have producers at the risk of losing everything and consumers at the risk of paying higher prices. Restaurants in a week could be out of fresh ground beef.” New U.S. shutdowns are hitting at a dizzying rate. Smithfield Foods Inc., the world’s No. 1 pork producer, said Friday it was closing another operation, this one in Illinois. That news hit less than an hour after Hormel Foods Corp. said it was idling two of its Jennie-O turkey plants in Minnesota. JBS said Sunday it will shutter a beef production facility in Wisconsin. The most-recent news added to a flurry of other halts announced in the space of just a few weeks.

Billions of people around the world exercised their religious freedom during Holy Week, but a new United Nations report threatens to undermine both this freedom and women’s rights. The report of Ahmed Shaheed, the U.N. expert responsible for protecting religious freedom, advances a “progressive” agenda of abortion and new “rights” based on membership in sexual identity groups. The report to the infamous U.N. Human Rights Council undermines the empowerment of women and girls by lumping their concerns together with novel claims based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It includes a controversial interpretation of “gender equality” that promotes acceptance of transgender ideology and the concept of multiple, fluid, “gender identities.” By focusing on the promotion of abortion and LGBT+ rights, the U.N. report turns the focus away from serious and pressing issues facing women and girls worldwide. Women comprise 52 percent of the victims of human trafficking each year, but the report makes no mention of this or of the work that religious groups do to combat it.

Chile’s government has said it will go ahead with a controversial plan to issue certificates to people who have recovered from Covid-19. The documents would be given to people to allow them to return to work, Deputy Health Minister Paula Daza said. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said there is “no evidence” that people who contract coronavirus are immune from being infected again. It said certificates could inspire false confidence and help it spread. But Ms Daza told reporters on Sunday: “One of the things that we know is that a person who has had the illness has a lower probability of becoming ill again.” She added that the certificates would not confirm that people had immunity to Covid-19, but rather state that they had recovered from the disease and had completed a period of isolation.

A newly discovered asteroid designated 2020 HP6 will flyby Earth at a distance of 0.33 LD / 0.00084 AU (125 662 km / 78 082 miles) at 14:40 UTC on April 27, 2020. This is the 34^th known asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and the 9^th so far this month. 2020 HP6 was first observed at Pan-STARRS 1, Haleakala on April 22, five days before its close approach. The object belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 6.7 and 15 m (22 – 50 feet).
