NOTE FROM FRANK 2 There are a few things I need to speak with you about before getting to the news.  The first is a new Psalm 83/Ezekiel War chart that will be included today.  Please read it carefully and make note of the changes.  The second is a crash course on Islamic Jihad.

1405025335979 Fatah flag

In light of the video shared Tuesday (July 29th) on my main website titled “Iran Will Provide Missiles to West Bank Palestinians”, I did some research.

Let me give you a break down before we get to the information: Fatah is a ‘catch-all’ phrase used to differentiate them from Hamas (although with the reconciliation agreement and what you’ll see below, there is no difference).

Fatah is a political party of the PLO. Fatah has several hundred militiamen in the Gaza Strip who belong to various armed groups:

Jaish al-KaramahJaish al-Karamah-(Army of Pride and Dignity – ADP) surfaced at the end of 2013 in Anbar (Iraq) as a radical Islamic group opposing Iraqi Government forces in pre-dominant Sunni areas.

1405025335979Brigades of Martyr Abdel Qader Husseini – Armed Wing of Fatah

1405025335979Jaish al-Asifah [Army of the Storm]

Al_Aqsa_Martyrs'_Brigades_FlagAl Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades– coalition of Palestinian armed groups in the West Bank

HamasHamas also has various ‘brigades’ operating in Gaza:

Palestinian Islamic JihadIslamic Jihad –Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), is a Palestinian militant organization

Al Qassam BrigadeAl Qassam Brigade – military wing of the Palestinian “Islamic Resistance Movement”

Al-Quds BrigadesAl-Quds Brigades – the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamist organization Palestinian Islamic Jihad (NOT to be confused with the Quds Force of the IRGC Iran)

This is by NO means a complete list. At times, it’s impossible to tell WHICH of these groups fired at Israel. I would venture to guess they bicker among themselves over who gets credit. Lately, though it seems Fatah is claiming the credit for every rocket, which leads to the information below: (I will provide links when possible but for viewer protection I have left a few out, as the chance of computer tampering and virus’ need to be considered)

During Abbas’ speech on Friday July 25th, the last lines he spoke were taken as a call to “war for Allah” (‘Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory’ [Surah 22:39).  Al Aqsa claimed they opened fire on July 25 at Israeli soldiers in Qalandia.  Violence obviously began immediately following Abbas’ speech. Despite the claims that the al-Aqsa brigade was disband (2nd link), beginning on July 27th, the official Fatah Facebook page begin publishing statements and releasing videos, along with their declaration of open war

breaking_news_QRZHeadline:  US, UN announce deal on 72-hour Gaza cease-fire

Israel and Hamas have agreed to a 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire beginning Friday, during which time there will be negotiations on a more durable truce in the 24-day-old Gaza war, the United States and United Nations announced Thursday. The announcement came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to destroy Hamas‘ tunnel network “with or without a cease-fire” and as the Palestinian death toll soared past 1,400. There was no immediate Israeli comment on the announcement.

Headline: Netanyahu: Israel will destroy Gaza tunnels, with or without cease-fire

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that Israel was determined, regardless of ceasefire efforts, to complete the destruction of tunnels that Palestinian militants have built under the Gaza-Israel border. “We are determined to complete this mission with or without a cease-fire,” Netanyahu said in public remarks at the start of a cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv. “I won’t agree to any proposal that will not enable the Israeli military to complete this important task for the sake of Israel’s security.” “Hamas’ capabilities would have enabled it to abduct and murder civilians and IDF soldiers while simultaneously attacking from the tunnels penetrating our territory,” Netanyahu said. “We are destroying that capability now. There are no 100 percent guarantees, just as the Iron Dome does not give a complete response, but the IDF’s operations in the field are impressive and they are continuing at full force.”

Palestinian and Egyptian sources reported that a Palestinian delegation, comprised of both Hamas and Islamic Jihad representatives, arrived on Thursday morning in Cairo to discuss a potential cease-fire agreement with Israel. Earlier, Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar reported that according to senior Palestinian sources, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas spoke with the Secretary General of the Islamic Jihad, Ramadan Shalah, and told him that the groups were willing to “participate in the Egyptian discussions, as one united government.” Palestinian sources said the delegation decided to include the opening of the Rafah crossing in the cease-fire talks, as well as discussions of opening all the borders of Gaza. The sources added that Egyptian officials pressed Abbas to convince the sides to agree to a two-day cease-fire, in order to convince Israel to accept Egypt’s newest initiative.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. “It should be a ceasefire immediately by both sides. That’s what there should be, because plainly, too many people are dying. It’s just wrong what’s happening, so there should be a ceasefire,” he says in an interview with Radio 3AW. Asked if Israel is perhaps overreacting in its military operation, Abbott admits that in recent days he was “rather more focused” on Malaysian flight MH17, which was shot down over Eastern Ukraine, than on the Gaza conflict and that he’s therefore reluctant to judge. “All I say is that there should be an immediate ceasefire. Innocent people are dying. But, we must also be working towards a long-term solution that does involve the recognition of Israel’s right to exist behind secure borders.”

The Hamas-affiliated al-Qassam Brigades on Wednesday claimed responsibility for targeting an Israeli military engineering vehicle used to destroy tunnels in an attack in eastern Juhr al-Dik in the Gaza Strip. The Brigades said in a statement that the group destroyed the vehicle and “everyone, everything around it” including military vehicles, officers and soldiers. The group added that this attack, which used a kornet missile, was an “initial response” for the latest “Shujaiyya massacre,” referring to Israel’s shelling of a market Wednesday that killed 17 shoppers and injured 200. Meanwhile, Intense fighting is reported in the hard-hit Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza City. The neighborhood contains a high concentration of tunnel entrances and rocket launchers, and has seen some of the bloodiest ground fighting of the campaign.

At one point in the battle, the battalion’s commander noticed a Hamas cell dragging the body of one of the dead soldiers toward the entrance of a tunnel. Headline: Hamas suppressing wartime dissent, shooting to kill Palestinian protesters

Hamas has been shooting Palestinians to quell unrest in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian sources said Hamas has been killing Palestinians suspected of sparking protests amid the war with Israel. They said more than 50 people have been killed, most of them accused of spying for Israel. “Everybody is terrified to talk about this because they still control the streets,” a source said. The sources said Hamas troops have also opened fire on those who demanded food rations. On July 28, two people were killed and more than 20 injured when Hamas gunmen battled those waiting on line for food in the northern town of Beit Hanoun. On July 26, at least five protesters were shot dead by Hamas gunmen in Gaza City. The sources said some 40 people gathered outside Shifa Hospital to demand medical services. The sources said Hamas was concerned that the rival Fatah movement as well as neighboring Egypt were fomenting unrest amid the war with Israel. They said Hamas has retained its 20,000-member security force to prevent a coup.

Headline: Hamas Planned War for Months in Advance, Says IDF

Headline: Calls Grow to Upgrade Operation Protective Edge to ‘War’ Status

A senior source in the IDF’s Southern Command says the IDF was not surprised by the Hamas tunnel network, and seeks to dispel the widely held notion that the flareup in fighting in Gaza was an unintended result of the large-scale arrests of Hamas terrorists carried out by the IDF after the abduction and murder of three yeshiva boys. Hamas began preparations for the “July War,” as he put it, in February of this year, and the date of July 15 was set for its launching four months ahead of time. Contrary to most reports, the officer says that the tunnel threat was something “everyone” knew about, both inside and outside the military. However, he explained, “on a national level, no one wanted to hear about the tunnel issue.” In February, he added, Hamas tripled the pace of the tunnel digging, especially in the southern Gaza Strip, and the IDF knew this. The tunnel diggers had previously worked one eight-hour shift per day, and began working three eight-hour shifts, around the clock.

Headline: Israel deploys robots to clear Hamas tunnels

Israel’s Iron Dome missile-defense system isn’t the only high-tech hardware the country’s military is deploying in its latest fight against the Islamist militant group Hamas in Gaza. Israel Defense Forces have for the first time deployed an unmanned ground vehicle known as the Micro Tactical Ground Robot made by Tel Aviv-based Roboteam to scour underground tunnels for Hamas-controlled weapons caches and command posts, according to a Defense News article. The portable, remote-controlled system weighs about 20 pounds and has a maximum speed of 2 miles per hour, range of about 1,600 feet and battery life of four hours. Outfitted with five cameras, an internal microphone and infrared laser pointers, the machine can collect and relay encrypted information. The company’s website touts that the ISR model “is currently used by Special Forces, tactical and urban warfare units.”

Headline: ‘Hamas using sophisticated Qatari tech’

Though many Israelis underestimate its capabilities, Hamas actually has sophisticated computer and networking resources in terror tunnels to detect the presence of IDF troops and to automatically fire rockets and missiles at Israeli targets — and a rich sponsor is helping them. That sponsor is Gulf oil powerhouse Qatar, says Aviad Dadon of Israeli cyber-security firm AdoreGroup. “The Qataris have invested hundreds of millions in both defensive and offensive cyber capabilities,” says Dadon. “We have sourced 70% of the cyber-attacks on Israeli government sites in recent weeks to IP addresses associated with Qatar.” According to Dadon, Hamas has embedded sophisticated network systems inside its terror tunnels, giving operatives in command and control centers the ability to monitor events in any of the tunnels. Using sensors and other networked equipment, terrorists can quickly be notified if an IDF unit is advancing in a tunnel, allowing them to disperse quickly — and allowing the command and control staff to set off explosives when soldiers approach a booby trap.

U.N. Headline: At least 49 killed in Syria Kurdish-jihadist battle

A fierce battle between Syrian Kurds and jihadists from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group has killed nearly 50 fighters from both sides as the Kurds seized several ISIS positions, Agence France-Presse reported a monitoring group as saying Thursday. Wednesday’s fighting in Ain al-Arab (Kobane in Kurdish) killed 14 members of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and 35 jihadists, The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, adding that dozens of fighters were wounded. The Britain-based monitor said it was now “calm” after the fighting in the Ain al-Arab area in the restive northern province of Aleppo on the border with Turkey. The Observatory also reported fighting in eastern Syria between a Sunni tribe and ISIS, with members of the tribe tweeting about an “uprising.” The Shaitat tribe in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor — most of which is under jihadist control — also fought back against the ISIS, the Observatory said. The fighting erupted after the ISIS detained three members of the tribe, “violating an agreement” between the two sides, it said. According to the Observatory, the Shaitat tribe had promised ISIS it would not oppose it, in exchange for the jihadists not harassing or attacking its members.

Headline:  Russia threatens Europe with higher energy prices

Russia on Wednesday (30 July) reacted angrily to the EU economic sanctions, threatening to increase energy prices. “Obsessed with sanctions, Brussels is itself creating barriers for further cooperation in such a key sector as energy industry,” the Russian foreign ministry said in statement. “It is a senseless and irresponsible step, which will inevitably cause European energy market prices to rise,” the statement said. The ministry added that the economies of Russia and the EU are interlinked and that the “stage three” sanctions will affect the economic situation in the EU “not less than in Russia”. Some 30 percent of the overall EU gas consumption is covered by Russian gas imports, but some eastern member states are up to 90 percent dependent on Russia. The possible retaliation in the energy sector was factored in when the EU decided to adopt economic sanctions, which will enter into force Friday.

Headline: Food supplies cut to rebel stronghold in east Ukraine

Food supplies have been cut to the rebel stronghold of Luhansk in eastern Ukraine during a military offensive on the city by government forces, local officials said on Thursday. The army says it has almost completely encircled Luhansk but has opened a humanitarian corridor to allow people to flee the city. It says it is not firing on residential areas although three people were reported killed in overnight shelling. “Chains of large supermarkets, food shops and markets work intermittently. Food deliveries to the city have stopped, supplies are decreasing every day. Shops only offer products from their stocks,” the city authorities said in a statement on their website. The United Nations say more than 1,000 people have been killed in the conflict in Ukraine since mid-April. This is around the time when pro-Russian separatists rose up in mainly Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine, prompting Kiev to launch an “anti-terrorist” operation to try to quell the rebellion.

Headline:   Iranian ‘Qods Force’ General Scoffs at Calls to Disarm Hamas

Maj.-Gen. Qassem Suleimani’s message to militant factions resisting Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip was published late Wednesday by Iran’s official IRNA news agency.  Suleimani “underlined that confronting the Zionist enemy is a necessity and the Palestinian resistance movement will turn the land and sky into hell for the Zionists.”  “Disarmament of resistance is a daydream that will only come true in the graveyard” for Israel, said the rarely quoted senior figure.  The United States and European countries have called for a cease-fire in the devastating Gaza conflict and the disarmament of militant groups in the coastal strip, notably Hamas.  The Quds Force, a branch of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, is highly secretive and conducts security functions abroad deemed necessary to protect the Islamic Republic.  As its leader, Suleimani is seldom mentioned or pictured in Iranian media but he has cultivated a reputation as one of the most influential security operatives in the Middle East.  “The painful scenes in Palestine dishearten us and fills our chests with deep grief arising from deep anger,” his statement added. “Martyrdom for Palestine is a dream of every noble Muslim and freedom-seeker.”

Headline: US to sell largest ever Hellfire missile cache to Iraq

The United States is preparing to sell the Iraqi government 5,000 Hellfire missiles through a proposed $700 million deal intended to equip Baghdad with additional power as militants from the Islamic State continue to wage a campaign across the region. On Tuesday, the US State Department issued a statement announcing the preliminary approval of an agreement that would give Iraq a new arsenal of AGM-114K/N/R Hellfire missiles and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support “to help improve the Iraq Security Forces’ capability to support current on-going ground operations.” The Washington Post reported that the deal, if cleared for approval, would constitute the largest shipment yet of Hellfire missiles to Iraq. Congress will first have to authorize the arrangement, but AFP reported that lawmakers are expected to green-light the deal as planned.

The Islamic State launched a failed attack on the Iraqi town of Dhuluiya on Thursday, sparking clashes that left at least five of its fighters dead, the army and residents said. “The Iraqi security forces repelled an attack launched this morning by Daash,” military spokesman Qassem Atta told AFP, using ISIS’ former Arabic acronym. “The army and airforce, supported by tribal fighters, killed five Daash members, including a senior leader,” he said. Dhuluiya, which is located 90 kilometers (55 miles) north of Baghdad, is a key target in the jihadist group’s attempt to progress toward the capital.  “We killed eight of them. Four bodies are still strewn in the street and Daash has now retreated,” said one tribal fighter contacted in Dhuluiya by phone.

Headline:  Ethiopia, Egypt to resume Nile dam talks on Aug. 26

Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan will resume their tripartite talks on an Ethiopian multi-billion dollar hydroelectric dam on the Nile in late August, an Ethiopian official said Tuesday. “The negotiations will resume on August 26-27,” Fekahmed Negash, director-general of boundary and trans-boundary rivers at Ethiopia’s Water Ministry, told Anadolu Agency. Cairo and Khartoum had earlier accepted a proposal by Addis Ababa to hold the talks in Sudan in the third week of August. Set up in 2011, a tripartite technical committee was tasked with studying the impact of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the two downstream states. The committee’s activities, however, were suspended in January amid mounting tension between Cairo and Addis Ababa. Negash said the committee will “pick up where it left off at the time of its disruption, which is the formation of a committee for conducting two proposed studies.”

Headline: Benghazi declared ‘Islamic emirate’ by militants

Heavy shelling resumed on Thursday in southern Tripoli where rival militia brigades were battling for control of the capital’s main airport in some of the worst clashes since the 2011 revolt which ousted Muammar Gaddafi. Around 200 people have been killed since the clashes erupted two weeks ago in the capital and also in the eastern city of Benghazi, where a coalition of Islamist militants and former rebels have overrun a major army base in the city. Meanwhile, Islamic hard-line militias claimed to have taken control of Libya’s second largest city, Benghazi, after defeating army units, taking over military barracks and seizing tanks, rockets and hundreds of boxes of ammunition, as deadly clashes continue in the western edge of the country in the capital between rival militias, promoting a wave of evacuation by foreign nationals, diplomats and Libyans.

Headline: ISIS woos Ansar al-Sharia in Libya

After failing to attract al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the group formerly known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is now trying to gain the support of Libya’s Ansar al-Sharia. An ISIS supporter recently endorsed the terror group on a global jihadist forum. On July 23rd, the militant urged ISIS followers to repost his comments on social networking websites, in order to push Ansar al-Sharia in Libya to swear allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. To their view Ansar al-Sharia in Libya is key for taking control over the Maghreb and Egypt. According to Abdellah Rami, an expert on jihadist movements, AQIM’s refusal to recognise al-Baghdadi’s group kept ISIS from claiming the key position in the parent terror organisation. “The success or failure of the ISIS project hinges on the positions of three key jihadist organisations in the world: al-Qaeda in Yemen, AQIM and Ansar al-Sharia in Libya,” Rami said. “Without the allegiance of those groups, the caliphate project will just be ink on paper and will be a local organisation confined to Iraq’s borders.” “However, this doesn’t mean that the caliphate state doesn’t have supporters in those areas,” Rami told Magharebia. “There are dozens of small groups and terrorist cells that have already sworn allegiance to ISIS in those countries, and there are hundreds of lone wolves that ISIS has already attracted. Therefore, al-Baghdadi can use those at any moment to carry out terrorist operations and destabilise regional countries.”

Algeria is willing to establish “normal” relations with Morocco and build the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) in compliance with Saharawi people’s right to self-determination under the International Law, Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said Wednesday. Algeria today “reaffirms its commitment for the establishment of the normal bilateral relations with the Kingdom of Morocco and the construction of the Arab Maghreb Union to serve the interests of the region’s peoples, but by respecting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination,” Lamamra stressed in an interview with Ennahar TV channel. “When Algeria banked on the establishment of normal bilateral relations with the Kingdom of Morocco and on the creation of the Arab Maghreb Union to set up a new climate in the region, likely to offer promising prospects to the region’s peoples, it was based on the idea that Morocco would admit evidences and would not impose a solution in the region which would be rejected by both the international community and the Sahrawi people,” the minister said.

Headline:  Erdogan Accuses Israel of ‘Hitler-Like Fascism’

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday launched one of his strongest attacks yet on Israel over its military operation in the Gaza Strip, accusing the Jewish state of showing “Hitler-like fascism” against the Palestinians. Speaking at a mass rally in eastern Turkey to promote his candidacy in presidential elections, Turkey’s Islamist leader once again compared Israel to Nazi Germany saying he was happy to give back an award that was bestowed upon him by an American Jewish Group in 2004, reiterating comments made earlier this week. In typically bombastic mood wearing a casual shirt and sunglasses, Erdogan showed no sign of reining in rhetoric that has angered not just Israel but also Ankara’s NATO ally the United States. “What is the difference between Israeli actions and those of the Nazis and Hitler?” he asked.   “How can you explain what the Israeli state has been doing in Gaza, Palestine, if not genocide?” he said. “This is racism. This is fascism. This is keeping Hitler’s spirit alive,” he added.

Headline:   Turkish ‘Humanitarian Aid’ to Gaza: Ball-Bearings, Cement Mixers

*****This is NOT yet the Freedom Flotilla II with naval escort

Customs officials at southern Israel’s Ashdod port discovered hundreds of ball-bearings and cement mixers in a Turkish shipment of “humanitarian aid” to Gaza on Wednesday, raising fears the cargo could have been used by Hamas to support its ongoing war against Israel, according to Channel Two. While both items have civilian uses, both have played a central role building Hamas’s rocket arsenal and its vast network of “terror tunnels” into Israel. Terrorists in Gaza regularly use ball-bearings to maximize the lethality of locally-made, short-range Qassam rockets. Unlike other, more powerful long-range rockets and military-grade mortar shells smuggled into Gaza from state-sponsors such as Iran, Qassam rockets have a relatively small warhead. But while the explosion itself may be relatively “small”, the rockets are also packed with shrapnel – including nails, razors and, most commonly, ball-bearings – which are scattered throughout a relatively wide radius upon impact, maiming or killing anyone in the vicinity. The co-opting of hundreds of tons of concrete supplies by Hamas to build its underground tunnel network, used to store and transport weapons as well as carry out attacks inside Israel, has also been well-documented. The timing of those specific items of “humanitarian aid” is particularly suspicious; Gaza’s civilian population are hardly appealing for fresh supplies of ball-bearings, and rebuilding targets struck by the Israeli Air Force while it is still operating over Gaza’s skies seems a rather unfruitful endeavor.

Headline:   US Warns Armenia, Russia Fires Back

After the US Embassy in Armenia issued a terse warning to Armenian businesses about the consequences of doing business with Russia in light of the most recent Western sanctions, the Russian Embassy fired back accusing the US of “threatening” Armenia. “We encourage all countries and their nationals to consider the reputational risk of doing business with sanctioned individuals and entities and cease business dealings inconsistent with the sanctions that we and others have imposed,” the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan said on Thursday. “The U.S. Embassy in Armenia, like other U.S. embassies around the globe, distributed information about these latest sanctions to Government of Armenia representatives as well as to local business organizations,” it added a statement to RFE/RL’s Armenian service (Azatutyun.am). The Russian Embassy was quick to respond and accuse the US of using “thinly veiled threats” against the Armenian government and its business community. “It is not within diplomatic norms to dictate to a host country’s authorities with whom and how they should maintain ties, especially using suggestive threats against a sovereign state. We expect that the business community of Armenia is also able to independently conduct its business and does not need any and does not need any pressure,” said the Russian Embassy statement.

A game warden hit in the head with a rock while trying to seize a raft. Police officers wounded in an hours-long standoff with a gang member wanted for murder. Criminals spewing obscenities and death threats at local cops before asking for – and receiving – medical treatment. And that was just last week. A weekly report distributed by a Texas state agency to senior law enforcement officials paints a grim picture of the Mexican border, where authorities regularly confront illegal immigrant gang members and draw automatic gunfire from across the Rio Grande, and where local, state and federal authorities fight a never-ending battle against drug smugglers. The most recent Border Operations Sector Assessment report compiled by the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Border Security Operations Center, dated July 25 and obtained by FoxNews.com, details local and federal authorities encountering smugglers carrying millions of dollars’ worth of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine, some of which was found in vehicles filled with biblical passages and religious items; federal agents being assaulted and shot at; gang members brazenly approaching people in their homes; and ranch workers witnessing men crossing into the U.S. wearing camouflage and carrying long guns and automatic weapons.

Headline:  China says Islamist militants kill pro-Beijing imam in Xinjiang

Three suspected Islamist militants armed with knives and axes killed the imam of China’s biggest mosque in the western region of Xinjiang on Wednesday, the authorities said, days after a knife-wielding gang attacked state buildings in the same region. All three attackers, who were named by the government, had ethnic Uighur names and the imam, Juma Tayir, was a well-known pro-government Uighur who led prayers at the Id Kah Mosque in the old Silk Road city of Kashgar. Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur people, who speak a Turkic language, has for years been beset by violence, which the government blames on Islamist militants or separatists who it says want to establish an independent state called East Turkestan. Exiled Uighur groups and human rights activists say the government’s repressive policies in Xinjiang, including controls on Islam, have provoked unrest, a claim Beijing denies.

Headline:  Argentina blames US, ‘incompetent’ judge for default

The collapse of talks with U.S. creditors sent Argentina into its second debt default in 13 years and raised questions about what comes next for financial markets and the South American nation’s staggering economy. A midnight Wednesday deadline to reach a deal with holdout bondholders came and went with Argentine Economy Minister Axel Kicillof holding firm to his government’s position that it could not accept a deal with U.S. hedge fund creditors it dismisses as “vultures.” Kicillof said the funds refused a compromise offer in talks that ended several hours earlier, although he gave no details of that proposal. “We’re not going to sign an agreement that jeopardizes the future of all Argentines,” Kicillof said after he emerged from the meeting with creditors and a mediator in New York City. “Argentines can remain calm because tomorrow will just be another day and the world will keep on spinning.” But court-appointed mediator Daniel Pollack said a default could hurt bondholders who were not part of the dispute as well as the Argentine economy, which is suffering through a recession, a shortage of dollars and one of the world’s highest inflation rates. “The full consequences of default are not predictable, but they are certainly not positive,” Pollack said.

Headline:  Drug-resistant malaria spreads in Asia, Africa

Drug-resistant malaria is dangerously spreading in South-East Asia, according to a recent study. “Radical action” is needed to prevent it from spreading further, the researchers say. The study was carried out by the New England Journal of Medicine, and founded by the UK Department of International Development. In the study, blood samples from 1,241 malaria patients in 10 countries at 15 trial sites in Asia and Africa. Resistance was noticed in central Burma, southern Laos, and north-eastern Cambodia. In particular, the Cambodia-Thailand border was indicated as risky. No evidence of resistance was found in Africa. “It may still be possible to prevent the spread of artemisinin-resistant malaria parasites across Asia and then to Africa by eliminating them, but that window of opportunity is closing fast,” Professor Nicholas White, who led the research, told Reuters. Artemisinins are the frontline drugs for the disease. “It’s worse than we expected. We have to act quickly if we are going to do anything,” he added.

Headline: California breaks drought record as 58% of state hits driest level

More than half of California is now under the most severe level of drought for the first time since the federal government began issuing regular drought reports in the late 1990s, according to new data released Thursday. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor report, in July roughly 58% of California was considered to be experiencing an “exceptional” drought — the harshest on a five-level scale. This is the first year that any part of California has seen that level of drought, let alone more than half of it, said Mark Svoboda, a climatologist with the National Drought Mitigation Center, which issued the report. “You keep beating the record, which are still all from this year,” he said. The entire state has been in severe drought since May, but more of it has since fallen into more severe categories — “extreme” and “exceptional.” Nearly 22% more of California was added into the exceptional drought category in the last week alone. California is also more than a year’s worth of water short in its reservoirs and moisture in the state’s topsoil and subsoil has nearly been depleted, according to the report.

Headline: Floods submerge parts of Balkans, 2 have died

A second person has drowned after rivers burst their banks in Romania, authorities said Thursday, and the flooding also caused damage across the Balkans, inundating a power plant in Serbia and causing landslides in Montenegro. Forecasters issued a severe weather warning for parts of southern Romania, which has been worst hit by the floods this week. About 300 people were stranded by floods in a village near the Gilort River, which burst its banks. Authorities said a man was found dead several kilometers from his home, the second person to drown in Romania from the flooding. Around 1,200 people have been evacuated, and some 2,200 homes were damaged by floods with 99 of them completely destroyed. Forecasters said flooding was also expected in northwest Romania as waters levels in rivers grew, and one major road in west Romania was also flooded.
