Headline: Abbas Praises Algeria’s $25 Aid Funding to Gaza (Algeria is PUT in the Ezekiel War)

President Mahmoud Abbas expressed Thursday his appreciation for the Algerian support of affected Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the latest of which was a grant of US$25 by Algeria to help overcome the humanitarian disaster caused by the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza. Abbas expressed thanks for his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika for providing this urgent support, signifying Bouteflika’s constant stance in supporting the Palestinian rights of freedom and independence. “We recall [the role of] Algeria in supporting and embracing our Palestinian revolt, as well as standing in support of the Palestinian stance at all international and regional forums and its ongoing  financial assistance to Palestine,” said Abbas.

***I believe they mean $25 MILLION although that is up for debate since we can’t independently confirm the amount; Algeria sent $100,000.00 on July 20th.

8-1-14: Update: I was correct that it was $25 MILLION, this was confirmed correctly in Wafa Twitter (2nd link)

Headline: MK Danon to Ynet: If the soldier isn’t returned, ‘we should start leveling Gaza’

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke with US Secretary of State John Kerry following Friday, after Hamas terrorists breached a 72-hour ceasefire to attack an IDF force in Gaza, killing two soldiers and taking another hostage. A statement from the prime minister’s office said that Netanyahu confirmed to Kerry “that despite his joint statement with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, according to which assurances had been received from Hamas and the other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip regarding a ceasefire from 08:00 this morning, the Palestinians had unilaterally and grossly violated the humanitarian ceasefire and attacked our soldiers after 09:00. “Prime Minister Netanyahu told US Secretary of State Kerry that Hamas and the other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip will bear the consequences of their actions and that Israel would take all necessary steps against those who call for our destruction and perpetrate terrorism against our citizens.” The abducted soldier is Lieutenant (Platoon Leader) Hadar Goldin, 23, from Kfar Saba. Goldin serves in the

Headline: Hamas claims capture of IDF soldier

Contrary to their early morning media blitz denying responsible for kidnapping, Hamas has now confirmed that their forces captured the IDF soldier feared kidnapped Friday, but strongly contested the version of events put forward by Israel, Palestinian news agency Ma’an reported. Hamas’s Moussa Abu Marzouk says Hamas captured an Israeli soldier. He tells the Turkish Anadolu news agency that the kidnapping took place shortly before the since-collapsed truce went into effect. Israel says the incident in which the soldier was kidnapped occurred at about 9.30, more than an hour into the supposed truce.

Headline: Israeli Analyst: Hamas Has 3,000 Elite Soldiers Ready to Die in Suicide Attacks on Israel

An Israeli analyst told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Friday morning that he received information from reliable sources that 3,000 Hamas elite soldiers told their families goodbye and appear ready to carry out suicide attacks on Israel. Middle East analyst Gershon Baskin said that all the fighters were equipped with suicide vests and that they had expected to die in terrorist attacks. Baskin spoke just hours after a Hamas suicide attack, believed to have been conducted by the group’s militant wing Ezzedine al-Qassam brigade, killed two Israeli soldiers. During the surprise Hamas attack, which happened two hours into the 72-hour agreement for a cease fire, the militants captured an Israeli officer. “You say these elite fighting forces they’re all prepared– they all go in with suicided vests ready to kill themselves in order to kill Israelis?” Blitzer asked as Baskin nodded. “I was told by someone who had spoke to al-Qassam, the military wing of officer who said that before the ground operation began they were all instructed to go to their families and say goodbye to their families with the intent that they would not be returning alive from this battle,” Baskin told Blitzer in an news report airing live from Israel. “This is one of the very difficult things about fighting with an organization like Hamas, particularly these very dedicated soldiers, combatants who are not afraid to die.”

Headline: Kerry says Hamas violated ceasefire with attack on Israeli soldiers

The United States on Friday strongly condemned the killing of two Israeli soldiers and kidnapping of another by Palestinian militants and blamed Hamas for violating a 72-hour ceasefire in Gaza. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called on Hamas to immediately and unconditionally release the missing Israeli soldier. He urged the international community to step up efforts to end the attacks against Israel. “I have been in close touch with Prime Minister Netanyahu, with U.N. Special Coordinator Robert Serry and with other regional partners,” Kerry said in a statement. “The international community must now redouble its efforts to end the tunnel and rocket attacks by Hamas terrorists on Israel and the suffering and loss of civilian life.”

Kerry called Qatari Foreign Minister Khalid bin Mohammed al Attiyah and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu soon after being told of the abduction and the killings of two Israeli soldiers by an aide while flying back from a visit to India. The incidents led to the quick breakdown of a ceasefire Kerry had worked hard to broker. “We have urged them, implored them to use their influence to try to get the release of that soldier,” a senior State Department official told reporters traveling with Kerry. “Absent that, the risk of this continuing to escalate, leading to further loss of life, is high.”  The official said he understood the ceasefire broke down about an hour after it began.  Kerry also talked with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and was to speak to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.  Another senior US official said the United States was still working with Egypt, which was to be a venue for talks between the parties during the ceasefire, as to what the next step would be.

Headline: Hamas’s return to the resistance axis

In analyzing the conflict in Gaza, many observers have focused on the role of Hamas’s backers, Qatar and Turkey. But this analysis misses a key player. To understand Hamas’ strategy, the place to look is Iran. After the war broke out, senior Iranian officialsincluding Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, expressed strong support for the leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah also phoned the head of Hamas’s politburo, Khaled Mashaal, and Islamic Jihad chief Ramadan Shallah. Iran’s relationship with Hamas has been strained for the past couple of years, so these statements mark a reinvigoration of the “Resistance Alliance.” The rebirth of the Iranian-led axis provides the essential ingredient for a new explanation of Hamas’s decision to go to war with Israel.  Recent commentary, however, has placed Hamas’s decision in the context of the regional rivalry between the camp of states that back the Muslim Brotherhood, on the one hand, and Egypt, backed by the camp of anti-Muslim Brotherhood states, on the other. Hamas’s primary objective, according to this line of analysis, is to force a change in Egypt’s policy toward Gaza. In addition, Hamas is said to have sought to dilute Egypt’s role by leveraging Turkish and Qatari support, thereby revitalizing the status of the pro-Muslim Brotherhood camp. While there’s no denying the rivalry between Doha and Cairo, which is supported by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, this dynamic was not the principal driver behind Hamas’s decision.

Headline: UN Blasts Israel for Not Sharing Iron Dome with Hamas

Headline:  UN Security Council:  ‘It Was Past Time for an Immediate and Unconditional Ceasefire’ in Gaza, United Nations Palestine Refugee Agency Chief Tells Security Council

In what may be one of the most ridiculous accusations yet against Israel, the UN’s top human rights official condemned Israel on Thursday for failing to share the Iron Dome anti-missile system with Hamas, Breitbart reports. According to the report, human rights commissioner Navi Pillay condemned Israel’s military actions to stop Hamas rocket attacks against Israeli civilians, telling reporters that Israel was “deliberately defying International Law… in a way that may constitute war crimes.” “There is a strong possibility that international law has been violated, in a manner that could amount to war crimes,” Breitbart quoted Pillay as saying following a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council on Gaza. She backed this statement by citing Israel’s refusal to share its Iron Dome ballistic missile defense shield with the “governing authority” of Gaza. Pillay criticized the U.S. for helping Iron Dome, adding, “No such protection has been provided to Gazans against the shelling.” Just because Hamas fires rockets indiscriminately aimed at Israeli civilian population centers without provocation and fires them from within its own population centers does not “absolve” Israel from its own legal violations, Pillay told reporters, according to Breitbart.

Headline:  Senate approves funding for Israel’s Iron Dome defense system

The Senate on Friday rushed through a $225 million bill to replenish Israel’s missile defense system, and House approval was expected in the final hours before lawmakers began a summer break. The money will go to restocking Israel’s Iron Dome, which has been credited with shooting down dozens of incoming rockets fired by Palestinian militants over three and a half weeks of war. The vote came two days after the Pentagon announced ammunition deliveries to the Jewish state and as a planned 72-hour cease-fire between Israel and Hamas unraveled almost as quickly as it began. Efforts in the Senate to approve the money stalled Thursday night after Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma sought cuts elsewhere in the budget to pay for the aid. Earlier, senators attempted to lump the Israel money into a broader spending bill that included border security and wildfire assistance money. That bill failed to get the necessary 60 votes on Thursday, and the House had little interest in it, anyway. Friday’s separate Israel bill passed by voice vote.

Headline: Arab Rioter Killed in Samaria as Hamas Calls for ‘Intifada’

Israeli security forces shot dead a Palestinian rioter during clashes in Samaria on Friday, security sources told AF, as Hamas urged Arabs in Judea and Samaria to begin a new “intifada”. They said Tamer Smour, 22, was hit by a live bullet in the chest in the city of Tulkarem. A spokesman for the Red Crescent told AFP that 39 Palestinians were wounded by live ammunition and rubber bullets fired by Israeli forces during clashes throughout Judea and Samaria. In Jerusalem, Israeli police arrested two Muslim extremists during a clash that took place outside the Old City after Friday prayers. The clashes came as violence in Gaza escalated after a short-lived humanitarian truce collapsed after just a few hours, when Hamas terrorists launched an attack on IDF soldiers, killing two and apparently taking another hostage. The violence in Judea and Samaria appeared to be a response to calls earlier by Hamas for Arabs in Judea and Samaria to launch a new “intifada” or violent uprising against Israel, and reiterated calls to terrorist groups in Lebanon to attack Israel’s northern borders. Hamas officials released a statement calling on Palestinians to attack Israeli security forces after Friday prayers.

Headline: In several points in East Jerusalem Arab residents threw stones at police officers. The police responded with Non-lethal weapons and had the crowds disperse. No damage or casualties were reported. One protester was arrested.

A Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO – the terror group behind the Palestinian Authority) flag was spotted hanging from a utility pole near the Lion’s Gate last week, a Jerusalem resident reports – and the municipality refused to take it down until it caused someone to get hurt. “I called the police and the dispatcher told me it was illegal,” a woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Arutz Sheva Friday. “I turned to the municipality where I was told they are afraid of a ‘pogrom.'” “When I returned at eleven at night and saw that the flag was still there, I decided to do something,” she continued. “It’s just shameful that this flag hangs five minutes from the Kotel [Western Wall].” She and a neighbor went to go take the flag down the next day, but were attacked by Arab teenagers guarding the flag. “Two Arab youths guarded it,” she said. She had come with a four meter-long stick and tools to cut the flag down. “As soon as I started cutting it, a whistle sounded, and thirty Arab youths surrounded me and began throwing rocks at me.” “I was injured, but not seriously – but we left anyway,” she said. Later that day, the police forces came to finally remove the flag; it was later brought to the victim of the attack. “They brought it to us and we burned it,” she said. “I expect all members of our community to rally to enact a law against hanging PLO flags in Jerusalem.”  Meanwhile, Four cars with Israeli flags were set on fire Friday in the German Colony neighborhood in Jerusalem. A fire bomb was thrown at the fourth car. Firefighters managed to control the fire and prevented it from spreading to nearby vehicles.

Headline: Spain: 100s at Anti-Semitic Rally Call to ‘Put Fear into Jews’

More disturbing footage has emerged illustrating the recent surge in anti-Semitism in Europe, as Islamists and extremists from both the hard-left and -right of the political spectrum have used the pretext of Israel’s military operation in Gaza to engage in violent attacks and incitement against Jews. The latest video is from an Islamist rally in the Spanish city of Cueta, and shows what looks to be hundreds of Muslims cheering and chanting during an anti-Semitic diatribe by one of the rally’s leaders. Branding Israel “the arm of the United States”, the speaker continues: “The Jews, for decades, for thousands of years, have wanted to exterminate the prophets and everyone on the face of the Earth who is not a Hebrew. “In the Torah of the Jews it says that they are the chosen people… I swear to God that we will put fear into you until judgement day!”

Headline: Saudi King Abdullah criticizes lack of internation action against Israeli ‘war crimes’ in Gaza

Saudi King Abdullah on Friday criticized international inaction regarding the situation in Gaza, labeling Israeli’s military offensive a “war crime against humanity.” A statement read out on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, on Saudi state television on Friday, said that: “This (international) community which has observed silently what is happening in the whole region, was indifferent to what is happening, as if what is happening is not its concern. Silence [such as this] has no justification.” “We see the blood of our brothers in Palestine being shed in collective massacre, that have spared nobody, and in war crimes against humanity . . . all taking place before the eyes and ears of the international community,” the King’s statement said. King Abdullah affirmed that the Muslim world is going through a “historic and vulnerable phase,” adding that “the terrorists think that their . . .backbones have been strengthened but they are delusional.” “What these terrorists are doing in the name of religion is shameful and disgraceful,” the statement added, citing “the killing of people whose killing God has forbidden, and mutilating their bodies and feeling proud in promoting this,” the King’s statement added according to the state-owned Saudi Press Agency.

Headline:  ISIS imposes media controls in Syrian province

Islamic State, the al Qaeda splinter group which has seized parts of Syria and Iraq, has told activists in Syria’s Deir al-Zor province they must swear allegiance to it and submit to censorship, a monitoring group said on Friday. The militant group imposed the rules after a meeting on Tuesday with activists involved in media work, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. International media organizations have little presence in Syria and rely on activists and other sources to provide information on what is happening in the country. Islamic State also told the activists they must recognize the caliphate, based on their strict interpretation of Islam, that it has declared in the parts of Iraq and Syria it controls. It also said they must stop using the term “Daash” to describe the group. “Daash” is the Arabic acronym for the group’s previous name, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and is mainly used by people who oppose it.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden promised the assistance in a phone call with Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko, the White House said in a statement. The aid includes engineering and surveillance equipment, transport and patrol vehicles, and small boats.

Headline: Obama, Putin discuss Ukraine, missile treaty

President Barack Obama told Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday that the United States is still deeply concerned that Russia is ramping up support for pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine. It was the first conversation between the leaders since the U.S. and Europe slapped a new round of economic sanctions on Moscow. In a phone call, Obama also raised concerns that Russia violated a key Cold War era nuclear weapons treaty, the White House said. The Obama administration has said Russia violated a 1987 treaty that bars the possession, production or testing of certain intermediate-range cruise missiles. In Moscow, the Kremlin said Putin had characterized the sanctions during the phone call as counterproductive, adding that they seriously damage bilateral cooperation and general global stability. The Kremlin said both Obama and Putin underscored the urgency for bringing an end to fighting in eastern Ukraine and spoke positively about a meeting that took place the day before in Minsk, Belarus, among members of a diplomatic “contact group” pursuing an end to hostilities. That group includes representatives from Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Headline: Pro-Russian rebels kill 10 Ukrainian soldiers near Malaysia Air crash site

With the sound of artillery fire in the distance, dozens of international investigators arrived Friday at the zone where a Malaysia Airlines plane crashed in eastern Ukraine and began preparations to comb the rural area for remains of as many as 80 victims and jet debris. Several hours before they arrived, at least 10 Ukrainian soldiers were killed when their convoy was ambushed by pro-Russian separatist rebels in a town close to the wreckage site. Thirteen more soldiers were unaccounted for after the attack, officials said, and the bodies of four more people were being examined to determine whether they were soldiers or rebels. Both sides in the conflict tentatively agreed to a cease-fire around the crash zone, but the Friday morning attack by rebels on government troops took place less than 12 miles south of the crash site, outside the town of Shakhtarsk. Ukrainian forces and rebels have been battling in that area for several days but the town is still in rebel hands. Defense officials said that an army convoy was struck by mortars during redeployment. Ukraine security spokesman Vladislav Seleznev said the attack took place at 6 a.m., before the end of the 24-hour “day of quiet” declared Thursday in response to a call for a cease-fire from U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. “The militants are behaving in a cowardly and shameless fashion,” Seleznev said. “They used the `day of quiet’ just to fire on us.”

Headline:  Iranian forces arrive in Iraq’s Kurdistan

A heavily armed Iranian military force arrived at Sulaymaniyah International Airport in the autonomous northern Kurdistan region of Iraq this week en route to Kirkuk to help defend Shiite shrines from Sunni militant attacks, pan-Arab Asharq Al-Awsat, quoting an Iraqi Kurdish security official, reported Thursday. The senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to brief the media about the Iranian military, told the daily that the 200-strong elite Iranian military force was granted access to Kirkuk province from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). The PUK facilitated the Iranians force’s movement through Kirkuk, the source added. He said the top Iranian leading forces were trained in guerilla warfare and were armed with “sophisticated” weapons to aid in fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria in order to protect Shiite shrines. He also added that the heavily armed military would lift the siege imposed by ISIS on the Shiite and Turkmen communities there.

Headline: Iraqi FM blames Maliki for ISIS insurgency

Iraq’s Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari blamed on Friday Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his security officials for the Islamist insurgency gaining power in parts of Iraq, in a rare criticism of the Iraqi leader by a government official. “Surely the man who is responsible for the general policies bears the responsibility and the general commander of the armed force, the ministers of defense and interior also bear these responsibilities,” Zebari said, in a statement to Al Arabiya News Channel. “There are other sides who bear responsibility, maybe political partners, but the biggest and greatest responsibility is on the person in charge of public policies,” Zebari added. The Kurdish foreign minister’s comments are likely to further deteriorate relations between Maliki’s Shiite-led government and the Kurds.

At least 17 Iraqi soldiers were killed in a fierce battle against jihadists south of Baghdad Friday while bombs in and around the capital left another 16 people dead. The clashes took place in Jurf al-Sakhr, a small Euphrates River town on a road linking Sunni insurgents strongholds in the west to Shiite holy cities south of Baghdad. “Seventeen soldiers were killed and three wounded during clashes with insurgents in Jurf al-Sakhr that lasted two hours this morning,” an army lieutenant told AFP. An army medic confirmed the death toll, with both sources saying 23 jihadists from the Islamic State were also killed. The mainly Sunni town, which lies in the north of Babil (Babylon) province, is the scene of almost daily fighting between pro-government forces and Sunni militants.

The extremist group attacks the biggest oil refinery in Iraq on order to recapture it. Islamic State militants formally known as (ISIS) have once again made their mark at the Baiji Oil Refinery located in Tikrit, northern Iraq. According to information obtained by BasNews, IS insurgents have fired a number of rockets at the Baiji refinery, causing a massive fire to break out and causing severe damage to a number of the pipelines. The BasNews source said that Baiji residents have been affected by the refinery fire by suffering from gas inhalation.

Headline:   Ethiopia, Egypt to resume Nile dam talks on Aug. 26

Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan will resume their tripartite talks on an Ethiopian multi-billion dollar hydroelectric dam on the Nile in late August, an Ethiopian official said Tuesday. “The negotiations will resume on August 26-27,” Fekahmed Negash, director-general of boundary and trans-boundary rivers at Ethiopia’s Water Ministry, told Anadolu Agency. Cairo and Khartoum had earlier accepted a proposal by Addis Ababa to hold the talks in Sudan in the third week of August. Set up in 2011, a tripartite technical committee was tasked with studying the impact of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the two downstream states. The committee’s activities, however, were suspended in January amid mounting tension between Cairo and Addis Ababa. Negash said the committee will “pick up where it left off at the time of its disruption, which is the formation of a committee for conducting two proposed studies.”

Headline:   S.Sudan media crackdown stifling debate on war

Amid civil war and famine warnings, South Sudan’s tough security forces have cracked down on journalists, suffocating debate on how to end the fighting, rights groups warned Friday. South Sudan’s feared National Security Service (NSS) should “stop seizing and shutting down newspapers as well as harassing, intimidating, and unlawfully detaining journalists,” Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said in a joint report. “The government clampdown takes place at a time when South Sudan most needs independent voices to contribute to discussions about how to end the political crisis and internal armed conflict,” said Amnesty researcher Elizabeth Ashamu Deng. Thousands of people have been killed and over 1.5 million have fled more than seven months of fighting between government troops, mutinous soldiers and ragtag militia forces divided by tribe.

Headline: Blast flattens police building eastern Libyan city

A strong explosion ripped through the main police building in Benghazi early Friday, nearly flattening it, days after Islamic militias overran army barracks and claimed control of the eastern Libyan city. The police headquarters has been empty for several days after militias pounded it with shelling. The blast, which was heard across Benghazi and shook houses in surrounding area, appeared to be from explosives planted in the building, the witnesses at the site said. Police officials in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, could not be reached. A coalition of Islamic militias over the past week captured a number of army bases in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, driving out troops and police and seizing large weapons stores. The fighting takes place at a time that rival militias in the capital, Tripoli, have been battling for weeks over control of its airport.

Tunisian guards shot into the air and fired tear gas on Friday to stop a group of Egyptians from storming across the border with Libya after fleeing violence in Tripoli, a Reuters reporter said. Headline:   Ansar al-Sharia claims Jebel Chaambi attacks

Ansar al-Sharia in Tunisia for the first time claimed responsibility for the deadly terror attacks in Jebel Chaambi and surrounding areas. The statement released Monday (July 28th) to mark Eid al-Fitr followed the week-end killing of two Tunisian troops. That attack came on the heels of a mid-July assault that left 15 soldiers dead in the same remote mountains near the Algeria border. The Ansar al-Sharia claim published on a jihadist website was the first for the Tunisian terrorist organisation since its founding in 2011. Addressing the army and security forces, the statement said: “The events that have taken place in the land of Kairouan since May at the hands of mujahedeen positioned in the mountains are the best proof that you only understand the logic of force and only hear the sound of bullets.” Ansar al-Sharia also threatened further terrorist operations in Tunisia.

Headline:   Azeri troops killed in clashes with Armenia as tensions spike

Azerbaijan said Friday it had lost eight soldiers in three days of clashes with arch-foe Armenia on the border and near the disputed Nagorny Karabakh region in a dramatic spike in tensions in the long-simmering territorial conflict. International mediators, who have for years sought to help the two countries reach a breakthrough, expressed concern over the violence. Azerbaijan’s defence ministry said Armenian troops had ramped up their activity in the past few days and attacked Azeri positions. “Reconnaissance and sabotage groups of the Armenian armed forces attempted to break through the line of contact between the troops along the entire front line,” the ministry said, adding that the Armenian troops had been repelled. “As a result of clashes over the past three days, eight Azeri troops have died,” it said. Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in a protracted conflict over the Nagorny Karabakh region with occasional skirmishes along the front.

Headline: Obama Signs Executive Order to Allow Detention of Americans With ‘Respiratory Illnesses’

As the Ebola outbreak continues to cause concern, President Barack Obama has signed an amendment to an executive order that would allow him to mandate the apprehension and detention of Americans who merely show signs of “respiratory illness.” The executive order, titled Revised List of Quarantinable Communicable Diseases, amends executive order 13295, passed by George W. Bush in April 2003, which allows for the, “apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals to prevent the introduction, transmission, or spread of suspected communicable diseases.” The amendment signed by Obama replaces subsection (b) of the original Bush executive order which referred only to SARS. Asian markets were mostly down Friday, continuing a global sell-off that began a day earlier when U.S. stocks had their worst one-day drop since February. The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 1.9 percent Thursday, erasing all its gains for the year. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite also fell about two percent. Argentina’s debt default, the crisis in Gaza, and lingering tensions between the West and Russia are all thought to have played a role in rattling investors. Many analysts also said the market was simply due for a correction, noting that stocks had become too expensive. Wall Street’s poor performance spread to Asia Friday, though the damage was limited due to better-than-expected manufacturing numbers from China.

Japan will give six navy boats to Vietnam to boost its patrols and surveillance in the South China Sea, Japan’s foreign minister said on Friday, in the latest sign of a strengthening of alliances between states locked in maritime rows with China. The deal represents a notable shift in the two countries’ close diplomatic and investment ties towards defense, a move likely to irk an increasingly assertive China that is pressing hard on claims to nine-tenths of the potentially energy-rich sea, and worrying much of the region. “International security is getting more complicated… prosperity only comes with stability in the South China Sea and the East China Sea,” Kishada told a news conference in Hanoi. “I hope this equipment will strengthen the ability of Vietnam’s coastal enforcement authorities.”

An Ebola outbreak that has killed more than 700 people in West Africa is moving faster than the efforts to control the disease, the head of the World Health Organization warned as presidents from the affected countries met Friday in Guinea’s capital. Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization, said the meeting in Conakry “must be a turning point” in the battle against Ebola, which is now sickening people in three African capitals for the first time in history. “If the situation continues to deteriorate, the consequences can be catastrophic in terms of lost lives but also severe socio-economic disruption and a high risk of spread to other countries,” she said. At least 729 people in four countries — Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria — have died since cases first emerged back in March. While health officials say the virus is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids, many sick patients have refused to go to isolation centers.

Headline:     School Plans To Tag Students With Microchip Bracelets To Encourage ‘Good Behaviour’

In a move that sounds like something out of a frightening dystopian fiction, a school in New Zealand has come under intense criticism from parents for attempting to introduce a scheme to tag children with microchips in order to promote good behaviour. Fairfax Media reports that Swannanoa School in North Canterbury plans to attach chipped bracelets to students to track their behaviour. Many parents were not notified of the scheme, only finding out about it via minutes from a Parent Teacher Association meeting. When the local media investigated the proposal, the school finally sent out notifications to parents. A letter from the principal suggested that the plan was more efficient than alternatives such as ID cards, which could be misplaced. The school has even gone as far as measuring up the wrists of children in preparation for the plan, which it says will cost $7000 to set up. Under the proposal, the devices locked to kids’ arms would allow teachers to use portable scanners in order to add reward points to a student’s good behaviour record, stored on a database. Students would be rewarded points when they did something teachers determined to be positive, and incentives would be enhanced with the promise of prizes for reaching a certain amount of points. The chips would contain information including names, points tally and the school house that students belonged to. The school claims that the devices would not have a GPS tracker.

Headline:  Killer solar superstorm could destroy Earth at ANY MOMENT, scientists warn

It is “only a matter of time” before a catastrophic eruption on the surface of the sun hurtles towards the planet with devastating consequences. The Earth could be the target of an explosion equivalent to “10 billion Hiroshima bombs exploding at the same time”. It has emerged crisis meetings have been held to discuss how to limit the damage of solar superstorms which present a “long-lasting” threat to all forms of life. Scientists warn communication systems will be crippled, vital services such as transport, sanitation and medicine will close, and loss of power will plunge the planet into darkness. Ashley Dale, member of international task force SolarMAX set up to identify the risks of a solar storm, said: “Without power, people would struggle to fuel their cars at petrol stations, get money from cash dispensers or pay online. The warning comes as Britain is experiencing one of the hottest summers on record. Scientists have warned of “highly unusual activity” on the surface of the sun which has already sent smaller solar flares spiralling towards earth. Solar storms are triggered when coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun tear into the earths magnetic field ripping it apart.
