Headline: Rocket shot from Gaza hits southern Israel

Headline: Israel air raid targets Gaza after rocket attack

One rocket was shot from Gaza at southern Israel Sunday evening, landing harmlessly in an open field. No injuries or damage were reported, the IDF said in a statement. Sirens rang out in the Shaar Hanegev region bordering the Palestinian enclave just before 9 p.m., sending people running for shelter. Area residents reported hearing at least one large boom. The rocket landed in an open field outside of settled areas, according to initial reports. The army said it was investigating the incident.

Headline: After stabbing attacks, army ordered to rethink settlement security

The IDF Home Front Command and government ministries have completed fortification work to secure several strategically vital sites against rocket and missile attacks, a senior IDF source said.
Work to secure dozens more sensitive infrastructure sites will commence soon, enabling them to continue to function even if hit by rockets or missiles, the military source told The Jerusalem Post.
He stressed that the role of the Home Front Command is to respond defensively to enemy projectile fire, leaving the IDF’s branches to handle offensive actions. “Each site is fortified in accordance with the threat posed to it,” the source said. “This is about improving survivability, though there is no such thing as 100 percent protection.” The Home Front Command is working with all Israeli defense industries in the research and development and production of reinforcement materials for sites crucial to keeping the country running in wartime and enabling the IDF to continue to focus on offensives.

Headline: Canada to send ‘tough message’ on violence to ally Israel

Canada’s new Liberal government said on Monday it was delivering a “tough message” to Israel as a good friend after expressing concern about Israeli-Palestinian violence, Israeli settlements and unilateral Palestinian moves. The statement came a day after Foreign Minister Stephane Dion was criticized for saying Palestinian initiatives toward statehood in international forums and continued Israeli settlements were unhelpful. “We’re steadfast allies and good friends, and good friends can occasionally deliver tough messages, but it’s by no means to suggest that we’re somehow retreating from any kind of support of Israel,” said Joe Pickerill, Dion’s spokesman. Dion on Sunday had issued a statement expressing concern about the  conflict, sparking charges by the Conservative opposition that the Liberal government was being unfairly critical of Israel. “As a steadfast ally and friend to Israel, Canada calls for all efforts to be made to reduce violence and incitement and to help build the conditions for a return to the negotiating table,” Dion said in the statement on Sunday.

Headline: Lebanese Army repels gunmen after Syria border clash

Intense clashes erupted at dawn Monday between extremists and the Lebanese Army on the country’s northeastern border, the National News Agency reported, saying the militants were eventually warded off. The army foiled an attempt by the militants to infiltrate its positions in Masyada and Wadi al-Hosn on the outskirts of Arsal, along the Syrian border, according to the report. The military inflicted casualties among the ranks of the militants, the report added, without elaborating. ISIS and Nusra Front militants have been holed up in the mountainous border region around Arsal for about two years. They have been targeted in what the military describes as preemptive shelling on a nearly daily basis over the past year to keep the extremists contained. The army does not always issue statements on its operations in east Lebanon.

Headline: Yemen PM returns to Aden to reestablish govt

Headline: Coalition strike kills Yemen judge and 7 family members

The Yemeni prime minister and his Cabinet returned on Monday to the southern port city of Aden, months after he was targeted in a suicide bombing that forced them to leave the country. Khaled Bahah’s return is aimed at establishing a permanent government presence in Aden, officials in his office said. Yemen has been torn by conflict since 2014, when Houthi militias allied with a former president captured large swaths of the country, including the capital, Sanaa, which they took in September that year.

Headline: Egypt: Militants kill three people in checkpoint attack

Militants killed three people, including two police officers, in an assault against a security checkpoint in Egypt’s Sharqia province on Sunday. Police say the attackers rode motorcycles and opened fire on the checkpoint, located in the city of Faqous. Four civilians were injured in the attack, and a local farmer was killed. The incident comes amid a rising level of militant attacks in recent weeks and among a general trend of extremist violence following the ouster of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. On Thursday, 10 people, including seven police officers and three civilians, were killed in an explosion during a raid by security forces on a suspected militant hideout in Giza. A large amount of militant attacks have been focused against security forces battling Islamist militant groups — including an Islamic State affiliate — in the Sinai Peninsula. Last month, four Egyptian security personnel were killed when a roadside bomb detonated next to a passing armored vehicle in the border town of Rafah.

Rabia

Syria Headline:   Key town’s fall major blow to Syrian fighters

Syrian regime forces on Sunday overran the last major rebel-held town in the coastal Latakia province, a stronghold of President Bashar Assad, state television reported. Citing a military source, state television said Syria’s “armed forces, in coordination with the popular defense (militia), seized control of the town of Rabia.” The town had been held by the opposition since 2012 and was controlled by a range of rebel groups including some made up of Syrian Turkmen, as well as Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rabia fell on Sunday after a steady regime advance that left the town surrounded. “In the past 48 hours, regime forces surrounded the town from three sides — the south, west, and north — by capturing 20 villages,” Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. Abdel Rahman said senior Russian military officials were overseeing the battle for Rabia, and that Russian airstrikes “played an essential role” in the fight.
With the capture of Rabia, government troops are closing in on rebel supply routes through the Turkish border to the north, he added.

Sheikh Miskeen

Syria Headline: Syria govt nears capture of rebel stronghold in south

Syrian government forces were close to capturing a rebel stronghold in the southern province of Deraa Monday, backed by Russian airstrikes, a monitor and state media said. “Army units are continuing to progress on several axes in Sheikh Miskeen,” state news agency SANA said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based activist monitor, reported heavy fighting and several dozen Russian airstrikes on the town. “[Government] forces now control around 70 percent of Sheikh Miskeen,” Observatory chief Rami Abdel-Rahman said.  The group did not have an immediate casualty toll for in the fighting. A security source told AFP the town was a “launching pad” for rebel operations, and one of the opposition’s “centers of gravity for the whole of Deraa province.” He said seizing control of the town would sever a key rebel supply route to areas under opposition control around Damascus.

Aleppo

Syria Headline: Car bomb in Syria’s Aleppo kills 23, including fighters: activists

At least 23 people, most of them from the Ahrar al-Sham rebel group, were killed by a truck suicide bomber in Syria’s Aleppo city on Monday, activists said. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 19 fighters from the group and four civilians were killed in the blast in the Sukari district of the city. The attack hit an Ahrar al-Sham checkpoint at the entrance to a security complex belonging to the group. The Observatory said several prisoners being held by Ahrar al-Sham at a facility in the complex were also believed to have been killed, but it had no immediate toll. The blast destroyed three buildings, and people were still missing under the rubble, the monitor added. It was unclear who was responsible for the blast, but Ahrar al-Sham has been targeted by assassinations in the past.

Idlib

Syria Headline: Missile kills 11 Islamists, 5 civilians in Syria’s Idlib: activists

At least 11 Islamist fighters and five civilians were killed as a ballistic missile struck a building in northwest Syria during a meeting between rebel groups, activists said Monday. “Eleven fighters from (Al-Qaeda affiliate) the Nusra Front and other Islamist groups were killed on Sunday, along with five civilians, when a ballistic missile hit a police station being used as a court in Salqin” in Idlib province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Britain-based group said it was unclear if the missile was fired by Russian or Syrian forces. The monitor said the toll could rise further because a number of people had been seriously wounded in the strike. The missile struck during a reconciliation meeting between members of Nusra and the Islamist militant group Ahrar al-Sham, who had exchanged fire in the town earlier the same day. The two groups are leading members of the Army of Conquest alliance, a powerful coalition that took control of Idlib province last year.

Kurdish Headline: Kurdish leader calls for redrawing Mideast borders

The president of Iraqi Kurdistan says the creation of an independent Kurdish state in the Middle East is “now closer than at any other time” and is calling on world leaders to accept that the nearly century-old Sykes-Picot pact that resulted in the Mideast’s current borders has failed. Massoud Barzani, who has led Iraqi Kurds for the past decade, has been saying since 2014 that the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) intends eventually to declare independence. But his latest comments — during an interview published Friday by the Guardian — suggest the development may be imminent. “I think that within themselves, [world leaders] have come to this conclusion that the era of Sykes-Picot is over,” Mr. Barzani told the U.K.-based newspaper. “Whether they say it or not, accept it or not, the reality on the ground is that. But as you know, diplomats are conservatives and they give their assessment in the late stages of things. And sometimes they can’t even keep up with developments.” His remarks come just four months before the centennial of Sykes-Picot, the agreement that saw Britain and France carve spheres of influence from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. Mr. Barzani told the Guardian that maintaining the status quo would ensure further regional disintegration and destruction. The the issue of Kurdish independence, however, is a sensitive one and there is uncertainty over how the rest of the world — let alone the Iraqi central government in Baghdad — might respond.

Headline: Rouhani Heads to Europe to Start New Chapter in Relations

For a second time in just over two months, Italian and French officials are polishing the welcome mat for Iranian President Hassan Rouhani this week, hoping to begin a new chapter with the strategic Middle Eastern nation. This time, they hope it will bear fruit. Rouhani’s trip to Europe was originally scheduled for November, but abruptly canceled following the terrorist attacks in Paris that killed and wounded almost 500 people. Now Rouhani has dusted off his aborted agenda, as he pays a groundbreaking visit to Italy, the Vatican and France to forge new ties with Europe as his country emerges from isolation. He arrives in Italy on Monday, where he meets with Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and other top officials, and speaks at an economic forum. He also holds talks with Pope Francis  becoming the first Iranian leader to do so in almost two decades, before heading to Paris on Wednesday.

Headline:      Libya’s recognized parliament rejects unity govt

Libya’s internationally recognized parliament voted on Monday to reject a unity government proposed under a U.N.-backed plan to resolve the country’s political crisis and armed conflict.
The rejection was widely expected, but signalled that mediators still face a steep challenge in winning support for a government. Of 104 members attending the session in the eastern city of Tobruk, 89 voted against an administration nominated last week, demanding a fresh proposal within 10 days. Since 2014, Libya has had two competing parliaments and governments, one based in Tripoli and the other in the east. Both are backed by loose alliances of armed groups and former rebels who helped topple Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Western powers hope a unity government will deliver stability and be able to tackle a growing threat from Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants.

Headline: ISIS eyes ‘mega merger’ with al-Qaida, Muslim Brotherhood

A London-based newspaper, Al Sharq al Awsat, reported the Libyan branches of ISIS, al-Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood are in talks to unite and establish a governing council. Documents leaked to the newspaper say this “mega merger,” as it’s been dubbed, comes on the heels of an international effort to unite Libya’s various factions and warring militias under one government. As Breitbart reported: “The paper said the Muslim Brotherhood is considering a united Islamic front even though the movement is officially in favor of forming a unity government. … Negotiations between the three Islamic groups began because of reports of a rapprochement between the internationally recognized government based in Tobruk and the unrecognized government in the capital Tripoli.” A source told the Arabic newspaper the three terror groups want to send a message “all the Islamist opposition elements speak in one voice and should be treated as such,” Breitbart reported.

Headline: Tunisian police protest over pay in new test for government

Tunisia is under a nationwide curfew after its biggest anti-government protests since the country gave birth to the Arab Spring five years ago. Hailed as the sole example so far of a peaceful Arab Spring revolution, the small North African state has been hit by major street protests in recent days over over unemployment and rising poverty. The trouble began last weekend when a jobless 28-year-old man who had missed out on a government job was electrocuted as he climbed an electrical transmission tower during a demonstration in the central city of Kasserine.  His death evoked parallels with that of a young market vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi, who set fire to himself in December 2010, sparking the protests that ultimately led to the overthrow the following month of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia’s long-serving dictator.

Headline: Four suicide bombers kill at least 25 in Cameroon region under attack by Boko Haram

Four suicide bombers killed at least 25 people Monday in an area of Cameroon besieged by violence connected to the Islamist terror group Boko Haram, an official said. Two bombers struck the central market in the northern town of Bodo, while two others targeted the town’s main entrance and exit points, an official told Reuters. “There are around 25 deaths and several wounded,” the official added. Officials who spoke to The Associated Press put the death toll at 28, with 65 people wounded.  There were no immediate claims of responsibility, although Boko Haram has stepped up attacks outside Nigeria over the past year, including targets in Cameroon, Chad and Niger, Reuters reports. The terror group claimed it kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls in 2014, forcing many of them into sex slavery. “We have information the four bombers came from Nigeria. We are investigating where they spent the night before attacking the market,” the region’s Governor Midjiyawa Bakari told The Associated Press. A Cameroon troop commander, Gen. Jacob Kodji, confirmed the attack and said Boko Haram are suspected. He said some accomplices may still be in hiding.

Headline: Suspected bomb attack kills 2 Chinese nationals in Laos: Report

Two Chinese nationals have been killed and another one has been wounded in a suspected bomb attack targeting their vehicle in a remote mountainous province in the Southeast Asian country of Laos, a report says. The suspected bombing occurred on Sunday morning when the victims were on board a vehicle on the mountain roads of Xaysomboun Province, China’s official news agency Xinhua reported Monday. “Laos military personnel rushed to the scene and the injured, surnamed Zhou, has been shifted to a hospital in the capital, Vientiane, for treatment,” said the report. The report did not give details about the “suspected bomb attack,” and it is unclear if the individuals were the actual targets of the assault. Xinhua identified one of the victims as an employee of a mining company operating in the mountainous center of the country. The Chinese embassy in Vientiane confirmed the incident and demanded a prompt investigation. It urged the government in Vientiane to protect the safety of the Chinese people and their property in Laos. China is a major investor in Laos, which is rich in minerals.

Headline: Aftershocks, reports of damage follow 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Alaska

Headline: Streets littered with rubble as 6.1 quake strikes off coasts of Morocco (VIDEO)

A magnitude-7.1 earthquake knocked items off shelves and walls in Alaska early Sunday morning, jolting the nerves of residents in this earthquake-prone region. But there were no reports of injuries. Alaska’s state seismologist, Michael West, called it the strongest earthquake in the state’s south-central region in decades. The state often has larger or more powerful earthquakes, such as a 7.9 last year in the remote Aleutian Islands. “However, last night’s earthquake is significant because it was close enough to Alaskan’s population centers,” West said, adding that aftershocks could continue for weeks. The earthquake was widely felt by Anchorage residents. But the Anchorage and Valdez police departments said they hadn’t received any reports of injury or significant damage. The earthquake struck at about 1:30 a.m. Alaska time and was centered 53 miles west of Anchor Point in the Kenai Peninsula, which is about 160 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. One home was extensively damaged and an entire neighborhood was evacuated after a gas leak was reported, Kenai Police Chief Gus Sandahl said Sunday morning. Crews were “definitely still trying to resolve the gas issue,” he said nearly eight hours after the earthquake. The USGS initially reported it as a magnitude-7.1, but downgraded shortly after to magnitude-6.8 before raising it back to 7.1. “Some earthquakes have challenges associated with them, they are unusual or hard to monitor,” West said. “This is neither of them. Southern Alaska is well instrumented, and this earthquake is of the style and type that we would expect in this area.” The biggest aftershock Sunday was 4.7, and West said a magnitude-5 or magnitude-6 aftershock is possible.

Headline: East Asia cold snap ‘kills 85 in Taiwan’

Headline: New York rebounds after blizzard, Washington shuts down government

A cold snap sweeping across East Asia has killed at least 85 people in Taiwan and stranded 60,000 tourists in South Korea. Taiwanese media reported deaths from hypothermia and cardiac disease following a sudden drop in temperature over the weekend. Meanwhile heavy snow forced the closure of the airport on the Korean holiday island of Jeju, cancelling flights. The cold spell has also hit Hong Kong, southern China and Japan. Many of those who died in Taiwan were elderly people living in northern regions such as Taipei and Taoyuan. Those areas accounted for 66 of the deaths. Another 16 were confirmed dead in the southern city of Kaohsiung. The temperature in Taipei city fell to a 44-year low of 4C (39F) on Sunday, and many homes in Taiwan lack central heating. Many victims reportedly had heart trouble and shortness of breath. “In our experience, it’s not the actual temperature but the sudden drop that’s too sudden for people’s circulatory systems,” said a city official quoted by AP news agency.
