Headline:IDF preparing for possible war on northern, Gaza borders

According to IDF estimations, the likelihood of Israel initiating a war in the next year remains low, both due to the turmoil in the Middle East which is keeping many of Israel’s enemies busy, and because of Israel’s current deterrence abilities. Even so, the likelihood of a severe incident leading to an escalation and even a war has increased, and is being described by the IDF as “moderate.” This is due to the tension along Israel’s borders, especially the ones in the north and near the Gaza Strip. Even so, Israel believes that Hezbollah and Hamas, as well as other jihadist organizations near the border – some of whom are as close as several hundred meters away from reaching Israeli school buses in the Golan Heights – are deterred by the IDF, which is considered an “aggressive and unpredictable” player. These estimates are in line with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot’s comments from last week, marking Hezbollah as the primary threat to Israel. The IDF believes that a war in the north could include, in addition to missile fire, hostage taking by the enemy and damage to naval vessels. “The next war will be different from the wars we’ve seen in the past 20-30 years. The conflict will be very complex,” say IDF officials. “Hezbollah has turned the majority of its Shi’ite villages in southern Lebanon into massive strongholds. They’re investing more in missile accuracy and warhead size, and are working more on underground warfare and bringing the war into our territory. Hezbollah started digging tunnels before Hamas did, and a war tunnel such as the ones dug under a Lebanese village can also be dug in the border area. But we have the knowledge and ability to hurt Hezbollah. These villages would be hit and this will lead to many refugees.”

Headline: Fatal Tunnel Collapse Indicates Hamas Rebuilding Offensive Capabilities

Eight Hamas militants were missing after a tunnel collapse in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian media reported on Wednesday. The reports, which indicate that the group is working on rehabilitating its array of tunnels reaching into Israeli territory, were confirmed by Hamas’ military wing, which said that it has lost contact with a unit of tunnel fighters after a collapse caused by inclement weather. According to the group, it is still searching for survivors. Earlier this week, a rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip to Israel, exploding in an open area near the border. No damage was caused. Earlier this month five rockets were fired, though only two exploded in Israeli territory, again causing no damage. Israel estimates that Hamas is investing efforts in restoring its military capability by building tunnels leading into Israeli territory and renewing its inventory of rockets, among other things. The IDF believes that there is a probability of a conflict in the Gaza Strip, but says that such an escalation could come either from a miscalculation of Israeli steps or reactions, or as a “no-choice” move on the part of Hamas, which will try to bring about a drastic change the situation prevailing in Gaza.

Headline: Furious Netanyahu slams Ban Ki-moon for ‘stoking’ Palestinian terrorism

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday accused the United Nations chief of “stoking terror” after Ban Ki-moon said, in connection with the wave of Palestinian deadly terror attacks, that it was “human nature to react to occupation.” “There is no justification for terrorism,” Netanyahu said. “The Palestinian terrorists don’t want to build a state; they want to destroy a state, and they say that proudly. They want to murder Jews everywhere and they state that proudly. They don’t murder for peace and they don’t murder for human rights.” The UN has “lost its neutrality and its moral force, and these statements by the Secretary-General do nothing to improve its situation,” Netanyahu said in a furious video statement. Ban’s remarks, said Netanyahu, “stoke terror.” Ban had attributed the terror attacks in the past four months, in which over 25 Israelis have been killed, to “Palestinian frustration.”

Headline: ISIS-Nusra clashes leave at least 13 dead on Lebanon-Syria border

Nusra Front militants launched a surprise attack against rival extremists in ISIS along the Lebanese-Syrian border Wednesday, sparking clashes that have left at least 13 dead, a Lebanese security source said. The source told The Daily Star that Nusra’s initial attack led to the deaths of six ISIS militants and capturing of four in Syria’s rugged Qalamoun mountains, on the eastern outskirts of Lebanon’s northeast border town Arsal. ISIS later launched a counter attack on Nusra, killing seven of their members, the source added. ISIS also captured four positions in the area, including Al-Malahi. The source said clashes were ongoing. The two groups have clashed on multiple occasions in the Qalamoun since their fighters took foothold in the area around two years ago. Fighting between them intensified last year after a Hezbollah-Syrian army offensive sought to root out all extremist militants in the Qalamoun region.

Headline: Saudi soldier dies in border shelling from Yemen

A Saudi soldier has been killed in shelling from across the border in Yemen, the interior ministry announced on Wednesday. He died on Tuesday in a strike on a border guards’ observation post in the Harth district of Jazan in the kingdom’s south, the ministry said. Around 90 civilians and soldiers have been killed in shelling and skirmishes in Saudi border regions since March when a Saudi-led military coalition began air and ground action in Yemen against Iran-backed militias.

Headline: Four Egyptian soldiers killed, 12 injured in Sinai explosion

At least four Egyptian army soldiers were killed and 12 injured in the Sinai Peninsula after an armoured personnel carrier exploded on the outskirts of the city of Arish, security and medical sources said on Wednesday. Unidentified militants planted an improvised explosive device on the road and later remotely detonated it as the vehicle conducted a search operation, the sources said. Egypt’s official military spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment. The most populous Arab country is battling an insurgency that gained pace after its military overthrew President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s oldest Islamist movement, in mid-2013 following mass protests against his rule. The insurgency, mounted by Daesh’s Egyptian branch Sinai Province, has killed hundreds of soldiers and police and started to attack Western targets within the country.

Syria Headline:  Syria regime forces take control of key town near Jordan border

Multiple bombings targeted a government-run security checkpoint in the central Syrian city of Homs on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people, Syria’s state-run news agency reported. The attack, which was claimed by the Daesh terror group, came as government forces retook a strategic town from opposition fighters and militants in the south of the country. Homs Governor Talal Barazi told the SANA news agency that the checkpoint was hit “first by a car bomb, which was then followed by a suicide bombing”. The Daesh terror group claimed responsibility, according to a report by the Aamaq news agency, which is affiliated with the extremist group. Syrian state television broadcast footage of the aftermath of the Homs bombing, showing extensive damage to shops and apartments around the site of the explosion in the Zahra neighbourhood, which is inhabited mostly by members of President Bashar Assad’s Alawite sect, an offshoot of Islam. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group which relies on a network of informants across Syria for its news, said the death toll had climbed to 25, with 15 of the casualties being security personnel. The observatory said witnesses at the scene said the first bomber attracted a crowd by shouting curses about the Homs governor, then blew his vehicle up.

Meanwhile, in southern Syria, government forces took control of the town of Sheikh Meskin, culminating an offensive that began in late December to retake the town after seizing the Brigade 82 military base, nearby. Sheikh Meskin lies near the highway connecting Damascus and the Jordanian border and connects the Syrian capital to Daraa, a border town held by opposition fighters. Heavy fighting has continued outside the town, between forces loyal to the government and opposition fighters, supported by Al Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, Al Nusra Front. The observatory reported Russian and Syrian air strikes were supporting the offensive.

Hasakah province

Syria Headline: ISIS holds thousands of civilians hostage in Syria’s Shaddadi

The Islamic State (ISIS) radical group has imposed a siege on the city of Shaddadi in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah, in a bid to prevent civilians from leaving the city, local sources reported on Tuesday. Shaddadi is considered the main bastion for ISIS militants in Hasakah province. “Nobody is allowed to leave the city. Anyone who tries to reach Shaddadi’s suburbs is being beaten and arrested by Daesh,” said Hammoud Hussein, a lawyer based in Shaddadi city. “Civilians in Shaddadi are held hostage by Daesh terrorists. People are running out of food and other basic supplies,” Hussein told ARA News, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS. This comes as the western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) started a battle for Shaddadi, aimed at regaining the city after more than two years of ISIS control over it. “People are afraid of being used by Daesh are human shields against the SDF bombardment and western airstrikes,” Hussein reported.

Iraq Headline:       ISIS booby-traps the only safe exit in Fallujah

On Wednesday, administration of Fallujah city in Anbar Province called for an “immediate intervention” to retake the city from ISIS and save 5,000 families entrapped inside the city, while also called the international coalition to intensify their air strikes on ISIS. The administration also pointed out that the only safe port that the security forces had opened for the families in the city has been booby-trapped by ISIS. The Mayor of Fallujah Issa Sayer said in a press conference held in the capital Baghdad, “We appeal to the federal government, as well as the Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces to immediately intervene and conduct a military operation to save the city of Fallujah and the innocent detainees by the ISIS.” Sayer added, “The number of families entrapped in Fallujah is about 5,000 families, mostly children and women who live difficult humanitarian situations without food or medicines,” pointing out that, “ISIS arrested hundreds on charges of cooperation with the security forces.” “We call the international coalition to intensify its air strikes on ISIS members in Fallujah,” Sayer continued.

Kurdish Headline: Iraq Kurds Agree on Independence Vote, Official Says

Kurdish Headline: Barzani and Kurdish Political Parties Discuss Independence Referendum

Iraqi Kurdish leaders plan to hold a referendum on the region’s independence, an official said on Wednesday, in a move that could lead to the break-up of OPEC’s second-biggest oil producer. Massoud Barzani, president of the semi-autonomous Kurdish Regional Government, and other Kurdish leaders have all agreed to hold the referendum, said Kifah Mahmoud, an adviser at the president’s office. While they all agreed to hold the referendum, the vote “doesn’t mean independence. It is the decision of the people,” Mahmoud said. The Kurds, who historically have resisted control by Arab-dominated governments in Baghdad, are independently developing oil reserves they say may total 45 billion barrels — equivalent to almost a third of the deposits in the rest of Iraq, according to BP Plc data. Saad Al-Hadithi, a spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi, said “any unilateral position from any party without coordination or approval will be against the constitution and illegal.”

Headline: Curfew widened in southeast Turkey, clashes kill 23

Security forces killed 20 Kurdish militants in southeast Turkey while three Turkish soldiers died in a rebel attack, the military said on Wednesday, as authorities widened a curfew in the mainly Kurdish region’s largest city, Diyarbakir. Hundreds of locals, including children and the elderly, fled curfew-bound areas of Diyarbakir’s Sur district as gunfire and blasts resounded and police helicopters flew overhead, a Reuters witness said. Some people cried as they carried away possessions. Southeastern Turkey has endured its worst violence in two decades since a 2-1/2-year-old ceasefire between the state and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants collapsed in July, reviving a conflict that has killed 40,000 people since 1984. The army said 11 PKK members died in the town of Cizre, near the Syrian border, and nine more in Sur on Tuesday, bringing the militant death toll in the two towns to some 600 since security operations began there last month. It said three soldiers were killed in a militant attack in Sur, where security sources said militants opened fire with rifles and a rocket launcher. The ancient Sur district, enclosed by Roman city walls, has suffered extensive damage in the fighting and much of it has been under a round-the-clock curfew since Dec. 2. The district governor’s office said the curfew was extended to five more districts so security forces could remove explosive devices and barricades and fill in ditches set up by militants. Turkey, the United States and the European Union all classify the PKK as a terrorist organization. The PKK says it is fighting for autonomy for Turkey’s Kurdish minority.

Headline: Iran says warns U.S. warship to leave waters near Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s navy warned a U.S. warship on Wednesday to leave waters near the Strait of Hormuz where the Iranians were testing submarines, destroyers and missile launchers, news agencies reported. The commander of Iran’s fleet, Rear-Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, told Tasnim news agency the U.S. ship was trying to collect information in the Sea of Oman – an area close to the Strait, a vital oil and gas shipping route – and said it left quickly after the alert. There was no immediate reaction from Washington which this month joined other world powers in lifting sanctions on the Islamic Republic after Iran agreed to curtail its nuclear program.

Headline:   Kabul Goes Dark After Taliban Attack on Key Power Line in Baghlan Province

Headline: Ten police officers shot dead in restive central Afghanistan

A Taliban attack on a critical power line supplying the Afghan capital has plunged large swathes of Kabul into darkness, government officials told NBC News Wednesday. The blackout appeared the mark the first time the Taliban managed to majorly sabotage Kabul’s main power supply and came after Afghan security forces launched a major offensive against them in Baghlan province. Mahmood Haqmal, spokesman for Baghlan’s provincial governor, told NBC News that the Taliban “blew up several power pylons” after Afghan security forces launched operations to clear the area of insurgents. A Taliban spokesperson denied responsibility for destroying power lines, blaming Afghan government forces. Officials at state-owned utility company Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) said the attack cut off Kabul’s main source of power, from Uzbekistan. “More than 60% of Kabul’s electricity is imported from Uzbekistan, unfortunately as of last night we have lost that source and now have to rely on domestic power supplies,” said Abdul Ahad, Deputy Director of DABS. Ahad said that the Taliban previously had moved to cut power supplies against smaller cities such as Jalalabad and Kandahar — but never succeeded on such a large scale in Kabul.

Headline: Sudan opens border with South Sudan for first time since 2011 secession

Some 34 000 people in Sudan’s western Darfur region have fled fierce clashes between government forces and rebels around the mountainous Jebel Marra area, the United Nations said on Wednesday. After several months of relative quiet in the restive region following Khartoum’s announcement of a ceasefire late last year, fresh fighting erupted around Jebel Marra around 10 days ago. Jebel Marra straddles South, Central and North Darfur states and is seen as a stronghold of the rebel Sudan Liberation Army (SLA-AW), which has been battling the government since 2003. “Initial reports indicate that about 19 000 civilians have fled into North Darfur state, and up to 15 000 into Central Darfur state, following fighting in the mountainous Jebel Marra region,” said Marta Ruedas, the UN humanitarian co-ordinator in Sudan. The vast majority of those fleeing the fighting were women and children, she said.

Headline:        US considering fresh military action in Libya over Isis threat

The Pentagon is considering fresh military action in Libya more than four years after conducting an air campaign that helped topple dictator Muammar Gaddafi, a spokesman said on Wednesday. Officials are currently “looking at military options” to stop the Islamic State militant group from gaining ground in another oil-rich Mideast nation, said Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook. At present, US efforts in Libya are focussed on identifying local allies to work with, for what a senior military officer has envisioned as a “decisive” confrontation with Isis. Cook acknowledged that the “metastasis” of Isis beyond its primary base in Iraq and Syria has prompted the Pentagon to revisit the question of a renewed war in Libya. A “small group” of US forces had made contact with Libyan militiamen, “simply to get a sense of who the players are”, Cook said, amid a fractured security landscape with multiple and overlapping combatants. Although the US personnel are likely to be special operations forces, Cook did not specify how many of them had taken part in the mission, nor if they were still operating in Libya. Cook portrayed the contact as closer to a broad assessment mission than the so-called “shaping operations” that precede imminent combat.

Headline: One dead as FBI arrests Oregon occupation leader, four others

One protester was shot dead and eight others were arrested on Tuesday after authorities confronted members of an armed group that has staged a month-long occupation of a federal wildlife reserve in Oregon, activists and officials said. The FBI said gunshots rang out after officers stopped a car carrying protest leader Ammon Bundy and others near the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Activists said Robert LaVoy Finicum, a rancher who acted as a spokesman for the occupiers, was killed. FBI agents were setting up a perimeter on Tuesday night around the wildlife refuge, where some people were still holding out, continuing their protest against federal control of large tracts of the country, a law enforcement official told Reuters. One of the remaining occupiers, Jason Patrick, told Reuters by phone they would stay until the “redress of grievances”. “I’ve heard ‘peaceful resolution’ for weeks now and now there’s a cowboy who is my friend who is dead – so prepare for the peaceful resolution,” Patrick said. The takeover at Malheur that started Jan. 2 was a flare-up in the so-called Sagebrush Rebellion, a decades-old conflict over the U.S. government’s control of millions of acres of territory in the west. Protesters say they are defending the Constitution.

Headline: Nigeria suicide blasts ‘kill 13’ in Chibok

At least 13 people were killed on Wednesday when three suicide bombers blew themselves up in the northeast Nigerian town of Chibok, where Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls. The blasts happened at about midday (1100 GMT) as the remote town in Borno state was packed with traders from surrounding villages for the weekly market, Chibok elder Ayuba Chibok told AFP.”Ten died on the spot and another one died on the way to hospital,” said health worker Dazzban Buba, who volunteered to treat the injured at hospital. “A woman and a child died as they were being admitted (to hospital), so now the death toll stands at 13. Thirty others were injured, 21 critically.” The blasts bore the hallmarks of Boko Haram, which has repeatedly hit “soft” civilian targets such as markets, mosques and bus stations as well as military and civilian vigilante checkpoints.

Headline: Bomb attack kills five Kenyan police officers near Somali border

At least five Kenyan police officers were killed Wednesday in a roadside bomb blast in the town of Lamu near the border with Somalia. The truck transporting officers “had about 10 administration police officers and the explosive that blew it up seemed to have been planted on the road they were using,” a senior regional official, who asked not to be named, said after the incident. The militant group al-Shabab, which is based in Somalia, claimed responsibility for the attack. “We killed eight Kenyan soldiers after we burnt their car with a roadside bomb near Lamu area,” said Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al-Shabab’s military operation spokesman, rejecting Kenya’s official account that those dead were police officers.

Headline: U.S. Net Worth Declines By $1.2 Trillion

Headline: Report of record oil output from Iraq throws global markets in turmoil

Headline: U.S. Stocks Fall, Dollar Mixed as Fed Holds Course

We have become accustomed to constantly setting new records for U.S. net worth every quarter. Even with slow economic growth, the U.S. has experienced a record-breaking total net worth every quarter since 2012. That string was broken in the third quarter of 2015, according to the recent Flow of Funds section from the Financial Accounts of the United States report by the Federal Reserve. Our collective net worth fell in the third quarter by $1.2 trillion to a total of $85.2 trillion. The drop was attributed to the difficult quarter in the stock market. More than $2.3 trillion in corporate stock value was wiped out during the August market correction, and that loss could not be overcome by increases in other sectors such as the $482 billion in real estate gains. Equities remained relatively flat through the end of the third quarter and began to rise at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Barring an end-of year collapse, this quarterly drop in net worth should be an aberration. As of this writing, the market had experienced a sharp two-day drop, so a fourth-quarter net asset gain is not a given — but it is highly likely. For 2015, the U.S. averaged a net worth of $85.8 trillion, well above the $84.1 trillion registered at the end of the 2014. Barring an economic collapse, we should stay well above that mark.

The Ukrainian health ministry has confirmed 72 swine flu deaths, of which 47 were in the past week. The number of fatalities in areas of the Donetsk region held by pro-Russian rebels could be as high as 300, according to the intelligence service. The nasty virus has spread to many former Soviet countries, reaching epidemic levels in St Petersburg, Russia, where at least 30 people have died. At least 18 people have also died in Armenia. The respiratory disease, caused by a strain of the influenza type A virus known as H1N1, can be spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Health authorities have insisted there is no need for panic, despite the virus reaching epidemic levels in parts of Ukraine and Russia, including the eastern Donetsk region, where fighting continues against Russian-backed insurgents.
