Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah Friday blasted Saudi Arabia for seeking to publicly normalize ties with Israel after years of a discrete relationship between the two. “Israel is no longer the enemy of Arabs, and Palestine became a minor cause. This is what the latest Arab statements indicate,” Nasrallah said, addressing his supporters via video link at a memorial to honor Hezbollah commander Ismail Zahri, known as Abu Khalil, in the southern district of Nabatieh. The Hezbollah chief accused Saudi Arabia of directly and openly contacting Israel, pointing to a debate between the kingdom’s Prince Turki al-Faisal and Israeli Maj. Gen. Yaakov Amidror in Washington in May, and another meeting between retired Saudi Gen. Anwar Eshki with Israeli officials in Jerusalem earlier this month. “When a known prince (Faisal) meets Israeli officials and an intelligence official follows suit and visits the occupied land …, it cannot happen without the Saudi kingdom’s approval.”

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s attempt to elicit Russian military cooperation in the fight against Islamic State in Syria suffered two potentially crippling blows on Thursday. First, the Syrian army said it had cut off all supply routes into the eastern part of the city of Aleppo – Syria’s most important opposition stronghold – and President Bashar al-Assad’s government asked residents to leave the city. That move, U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity said on Thursday, appeared to be an effort to pre-empt a U.S. demand that Russia and Syria reopen a major road into the divided northern city before talks could begin on creating a joint intelligence center to coordinate air attacks against Islamic State. Then al Qaeda’s Syrian branch announced on Thursday it was terminating its relationship with the global network created by Osama bin Laden and changing its name to remove what it called a pretext by the United States and other countries to attack Syrians.

Syria Headline: ISIS executes 24 after seizing Syrian village
ISIS has executed at least 24 civilians after seizing a village in northern Syria from a US-backed Kurdish-Arab alliance, a monitor said Friday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said ISIS executed 24 civilians “in the last 24 hours” after taking Buyir from the Syrian Democratic Forces. The village is located some 10 kilometers northwest of Manbij, a key waypoint between the Turkish border and the ISIS de facto capital of Raqqa city. ISIS seized control of several villages in the countryside northwest of Manbij since launching a “fierce assault” on Thursday, according to the Observatory, which relies on sources inside Syria for its information. The SDF, backed by air strikes from a US-led coalition, launched an offensive to retake Manbij from ISIS on May 31. The alliance managed to enter the town but have since faced fierce opposition from the militants who have fought back with suicide bombers and car bombs.

Headline: Five killed in two PKK attacks on Turkish security forces
Five members of the Turkish security forces were killed in attacks by the PKK Kurdish underground in the southeastern cities of Siirt and Hakkari late Wednesday night. In Siirt, a roadside bomb was detonated by remote control as a police convoy passed, while in Hakkari a car bomb blew up at an army checkpoint. About 20 members of the security forces were wounded in the two attacks.

Headline: Erdogan wants presidential control over army
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan wants the armed forces and national intelligence agency brought under the control of the presidency, a parliamentary official said on Thursday, part of a major overhaul of the military after a failed coup. Erdogan’s comments came after a five-hour meeting of Turkey’s Supreme Military Council (YAS) – chaired by Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and including the top brass – and the dishonorable discharge of nearly 1,700 military personnel over their alleged role in the abortive putsch on July 15-16. After the meeting, Erdogan approved the council’s decisions to keep armed forces chief Hulusi Akar and the army, navy and air force commanders in their posts, making few changes to the top brass, Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told reporters.

Headline: At least 5 US troops wounded in Afghanistan fighting Islamic State
Five U.S. special operations troops were wounded in combat with Islamic State fighters in eastern Afghanistan, the senior U.S. commander in the country said Thursday. It appeared to be the first reported instance of U.S. troops being wounded in fighting against the Islamic State in Afghanistan. The Afghan offensive began on Saturday, hours after the IS group claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack in the capital Kabul that killed around 80 people. Gen. John Nicholson, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said the five wounded Americans were hit by small arms fire or shrapnel during a combat operation conducted with Afghan special operations forces to clear areas once controlled by the Islamic State in Nangarhar. He did not say exactly when the injuries happened. The Pentagon later issued what it called a clarification, saying one of the five was wounded on Sunday and the other four on Monday.

Headline: Libya forces ‘retake’ Benghazi district from jihadists
Libyan forces loyal to a controversial general have wrestled back control of a Benghazi neighborhood from jihadists, following months of fighting to drive the Islamists from the country’s second city.
General Khalifa Haftar’s troops took the Al-Gwarcha district of Benghazi, which has been marred by unrest since his fighters launched a campaign to drive extremists out of the city earlier this year.
“We dealt them a firm blow, it’s a major victory,” Khalifa Al-Obeidi, head of press for Haftar’s Libyan National Army, told AFP Thursday. “We are presently pursuing terrorists who are entrenched one kilometer east.” Six of Haftar’s fighters died in clashes this week in Al-Gwarcha district, including four special forces killed by a land mine explosion. Haftar’s forces have regained several districts of Benghazi in recent months but have yet to retake the whole city.

Headline: Armenia: Officers Wound 3 More Gunmen Holding Police Station
Three more of the gunmen who have been barricaded inside a police station in the Armenian capital for nearly two weeks were wounded Friday in exchanges of gunfire with police, police said. The gunmen were the first to open fire, police spokesman Ashot Agaronyan said on Facebook. A high-ranking police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information, said the gunmen were hit in the legs by snipers after emerging from the station. A group of 29 gunmen seized the police post in Yerevan on July 17, killing one officer and wounding several others in the attack, to demand freedom for a jailed opposition figure. Besides the three gunmen wounded Friday, five others were wounded in previous exchanges of fire with police. Six were hospitalized and two remained inside the police station, where they were receiving treatment from three members of an ambulance crew who were being held hostage. The standoff has set off a series of anti-government demonstrations, held nearly daily in the evening. More than 4,000 protesters gathered in a central square on Friday evening.

Florida likely has the first cases of Zika transmitted by mosquitoes on the U.S. mainland, the state’s governor said Friday. No mosquitoes in the state have tested positive for Zika, but one woman and three men in Miami-Dade and Broward counties likely contracted the virus through mosquito bites, Gov. Rick Scott said during a news conference in Orlando. More than 1,650 Zika infections have been reported in the U.S., but the four patients in Florida would be the first not linked to travel outside the U.S. mainland. “This is not just a Florida issue. Headline: Gay civil union law comes into effect in Italy
Italy’s much-disputed law allowing gay civil unions took effect Friday after it was published in an official journal, as couples start applying for legal recognition of their same-sex relationships, the Local wrote. In Milan an official went Wednesday to an intensive care unit to perform the civil union ceremony of a terminally ill 53-year-old teacher named Margherita and her partner of 28 years. Theirs will be the first registered in Milan in about 10 days’ time, the city told the media. Throughout Italy, town halls have reported that requests for gay unions have started coming in. The Italian parliament passed the landmark legislation in May, overruling opposition from the country’s powerful Catholic Church. It introduces civil unions for the first time but denies same sex couples equal adoption rights to their heterosexual counterparts.
