A global reading of the Shema, the declaration of accepting God’s rule, will be held on Wednesday, March 16th, at 9:00 pm, Israeli local time, 3:00 pm EST. The reading of the Shema will come directly after the much-anticipated consecration of the Torah scroll written for the Messiah, which will be celebrated on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. The date, the 7th of Adar by the Hebrew calendar, is considered especially auspicious for both completing the writing of a Torah scroll and for the reading of the Shema. According to Jewish tradition, it is the date on which Moses was born and also the date of his passing away. The organizers of the event request all of Israel to join together in reading the entire Shema, which is directed at saving Israel from the horrifying wave of terror that has plagued the Jewish state for many months.

Headline: Putin: Netanyahu to visit Kremlin for defense talks
Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin visited Moscow on Wednesday amid concerns in Israel that Russia’s partial withdrawal from Syria will embolden its adversaries, Hezbollah and Iran, there. During his visit the Israeli President intends to “seek assurances that Russia will not allow its Syria withdrawal to bolster Iran and Hezbollah,” an aide to President Rivlin told Reuters. Rivlin confided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before leaving on his visit. Shortly after Russia intervened in Syria’s war late last September Netanyahu visited Moscow and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. There the two leaders established a communications mechanism to avoid any collisions in Syria. Israel seems to see Russia’s presence in Syria has restrained the ambitions of Iran and Hezbollah in that war-torn country despite the fact Moscow has backed their ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Israel has been wary that Hezbollah will acquire advanced Russian-made missiles from the Syrian arsenal and has launched airstrikes into Syria to prevent that from happening.

Headline: Germany, France, U.K. Condemn Israel’s West Bank Land Seizure
Germany and France on Wednesday criticized Israel’s decision to appropriate large tracts of land in the occupied West Bank, saying the move violated international law and contradicted a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Army Radio said on Tuesday the land was near the Dead Sea and the Palestinian city of Jericho. “This decision sends a wrong signal at the wrong time,” the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “Especially in the current tense situation, both parties in the Middle East conflict are called on to take steps for a de-escalation and to find ways that lead to an urgently needed resumption of peace negotiations,” it said. In Paris, Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said France was “extremely concerned” by the Israeli decision. “Settlements constitute a violation of international law and contradict commitments made by Israeli authorities in favor of a two-state solution,” the spokesman said. A U.K. Foreign Office spokeswoman said today: “We condemn the Israeli Government’s decision to take over 585 acres of land in the West Bank as ‘state land’. Such steps clearly damage the diminishing prospects for a two state solution.”

Headline: Blast in Yemen’s Aden kills three
At least 41 civilians have been killed and 35 others wounded in an air strike by Saudi-led coalition warplanes in northern Yemen, medics say. Witnesses said at least two missiles hit a busy market in the Mustaba district of Hajja province at midday. The international medical charity, Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF), initially said in a series of tweets that it had received 40 injured civilians at its Abs hospital, among them women and children. But a doctor at the hospital later told the AFP news agency that it had received the bodies of 41 people, along with 35 others who were wounded. The director of the Hajja health department, Dr Ayman Mathkour, also told the Reuters news agency that the death toll stood at 41. The pro-Houthi Saba news agency reported that a total of 65 civilians had died in raids on the market and a nearby restaurant. There was no immediate comment from the Saudi-led coalition.

Syria Headline: 14 Killed, 12 Injured in ISIS Terrorists Mortar Attacks in Syria’s Aleppo
At least 14 people have been injured in rocket and mortar attacks by terrorist groups as well as a landmine planted by ISIS militants in Syria. In a attack in the northern province of Aleppo, terrorists fired mortar shells and rockets at Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood on Wednesday, leaving 12 people injured. Meanwhile, two electricity workers were critically injured when a landmine planted by ISIS terrorists on Aleppo-Khanasir road went off. The Syrian government forces managed to retake control of the strategic road of Aleppo-Khanasir-Ithriya in northern Syria in late February. Separately, the Syrian army inflicted heavy blows on the terrorists in eastern Syria with scores of Takfiri militants killed and two of their machine gun-mounted vehicles destroyed in military operations south of the eastern city of Deir Ezzor.

Iraq Headline: Civilians flee Iraq town as battle looms
Terrified residents were fleeing the Iraqi town of Hit as security forces closed in Tuesday and terrorists hunkered down to defend one of their main bastions in Anbar province. Police colonel Fadhel Al-Nimrawi said thousands of families had recently fled Hit to Al-Baghdadi, a town to the northwest, and other locations in Anbar where displaced civilians are gathered. “At least 120 families arrived in Al-Baghdadi yesterday but there are thousands of families still in there,” he told AFP. He said most of the civilians had gathered in the Jamaiya and Al-Omal neighborhoods near the main market of Hit, a city that lies around 145 km west of Baghdad. Some Daesh militants fled the town on Sunday and Saturday, including some top foreign leaders who had been based in Hit, according to several senior security officials. “It is clear however that some of them remain, they are mostly deployed in defensive positions around the city,” Nimrawi said. Yahya Rasool, the spokesman for the Joint Operations Command coordinating the fight against Daesh in Iraq, said an operation in Hit would come soon. “Unfortunately, Hit is still under Daesh control but it will be retaken in the coming days,” he told AFP.

Kurdish Headline: Turkey says supports Syria’s unity, unilateral federation moves invalid
Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Syria are expected to declare a federal system imminently, Kurdish officials said on Wednesday, taking matters into their own hands after being excluded from talks in Geneva to resolve Syria’s civil war. The step aims to combine three Kurdish-led autonomous areas of northern Syrian into a federal arrangement and will be sure to alarm neighboring Turkey, which fears a growing Kurdish sway in Syria is fuelling separatism among its own minority Kurds. A conference in the Kurdish-controlled town of Rmeilan on Wednesday discussed a “Democratic Federal System for Rojava – Northern Syria”, and ended with a decision to make the announcement at a news conference on Thursday. Rojava is the Kurdish name for northern Syria. The announcement had been expected on Wednesday but was postponed for “logistical reasons” and because of demands from local Arab and Assyrian communities for reassurances that the federal arrangement will not mean separation from Syria, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human rights, which monitors the Syrian conflict.

The European Union warned on Wednesday that a deal with Turkey to curb mass migration to Europe hinges on Ankara acting to support peace talks in EU member Cyprus. European Council President Donald Tusk, who will chair an EU summit on Thursday and Friday, said much remained to be done to reach a deal with Turkey. “Work is progressing but there is still a lot to do,” he said in a letter to EU leaders. The migration deal needed to be “an opportunity (for Turkey) to support the settlement talks in Cyprus. Only if this is possible can we move forward here.” EU officials offered last-minute tweaks to the draft pact with Turkey in an effort to make it legally watertight, but a standoff with Cyprus could yet scupper any deal this week. Under a tentative agreement reached last week, Ankara would take back all migrants and refugees who enter the EU from its shores or are detained in its territorial waters, in return for more money, faster visa-free travel for Turks and a speeding up of its slow-moving EU membership negotiations. For its part, the EU would admit one legal Syrian refugee directly from Turkey for each one trying to reach Europe by boat and taken back by Turkey from the Greek islands in a step meant to wreck the business model of people smugglers. But Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has threatened to veto any progress in Turkey’s accession talks unless Ankara meets its obligation to open Turkish ports and airports to Cypriot traffic, effectively recognizing his state.

Our military sources disclose that the initial Saudi deployment of four warplanes to the Turkish air base of Incirlik earlier this month, has been expanded to sixteen, while Saudi officials declare that Riyadh and Ankara are preparing to intervene jointly in the Syrian conflict. According to our sources, Turkish armored and infantry troops have already crossed the border and set up positions in the northern Syrian province of Idlib, just a few hundred meters inside the border. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov referred Sunday, March 14, to evidence of “a creeping expansion by Turkey in the sovereign nation of Syria.” This was taken as a warning that Moscow would not tolerate any further Turkish encroachments in Syria, any more than it would accept Saudi air force intrusions of Syrian air space. The Russians infer from Turkish military movements that Ankara aims to establish enclaves inside Syria as no-fly or security zones, which Moscow has consistently opposed. The presence of the top-grade S-400 anti-air missiles in Syria is meant to obstruct this plan and discourage Turkish and Saudi aerial flights over Syria.

Afghan security officials say more than two dozen people have been killed and several others injured as government forces and members of the Taliban militant group engaged in fierce clashes in the country’s central province of Uruzgan. Aminullah Khaliqi, governor of Deh Rawood district, said on Wednesday that at least 10 members of security forces as well as 15 Taliban militants have been killed during skirmishes in the area, located 400 kilometers (248 miles) southwest of the capital, Kabul, over the past few days. The Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that 39 Taliban militants were also killed and 18 others injured in a series of operations carried out in the provinces of Helmand, Kunar, Kunduz, Laghman and Parwan. The statement added that nine Afghan soldiers were also killed during the offensives. Afghan government forces also confiscated light and heavy weaponry and defused several rounds of improvised explosive devices.

Responding to a request by the U.N.-backed Presidential Council and Western powers for an immediate transfer of power , Khalifa al-Ghwell told Reuters late Tuesday he could not hand over authority to a government he said did not enjoy the support of Tripoli’s parliament, the General National Congress (GNC). The U.S. and major European powers recognized the unity cabinet as Libya’s only legitimate government Sunday, and are pushing for it to move to Tripoli and start work.

Morocco’s government said on Tuesday it would cut staff at the United Nations’ Western Sahara mission and threatened to pull out of United Nations peacekeeping missions after “unacceptable” comments by U.N. The statement came on Tuesday after Ban met with Morocco’s foreign minister to express his anger over remarks by the Moroccan government and a demonstration in Rabat which he said was a personal attack following his Western Sahara comments. “Following the unacceptable declarations and inadmissible actions from the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon during his recent visit to the region, the royal government of Morocco has decided on immediate measures,” the statement said. It said it would significantly reduce a large part of the “civil and political” component of the U.N. mission known as MINURSO, stop its voluntary contribution to the mission and look to pull Moroccan contingents from U.N. peacekeeping missions. At least 22 people were killed in a twin suicide bombing at a mosque in northeast Nigeria Wednesday, prompting condemnation from President Muhammadu Buhari and stoking fresh fears about security. The attack, carried out by two women disguised as men, took place at about 5:30 am (0430 GMT) in the Molai district of Maiduguri, which Boko Haram insurgents have repeatedly targeted in the past. The attack was only the second in northeast Nigeria this month and came after four raids and suicide bombings in February and eight in January, There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but the bombing bore all the hallmarks of the Islamic State affiliate, whose insurgency has left at least 17,000 dead since 2009. Both the Borno State Emergency Management Agency spokesman Abdullahi Omar and the army confirmed the powerful blast, which brought down the mosque’s ceiling and tore off its roof. “Sadly, 22 people were killed and 18 others sustained various degrees of injuries,” army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman said in an emailed statement. A source at the state agency added: “This morning just before prayers two women disguised as men came by the mosque. “One of them went in and joined the first row of the congregation and when the worshippers stood up for the prayers she detonated her explosives, killing several worshippers. “While the others were trying to flee, the second woman who stood outside the mosque rushed in and set off her explosives in their midst.” The source, who asked for anonymity as he was not authorised to talk to the media, also gave the death toll as 22 but gave a higher figure of 35 injured.

A bomb on a bus carrying government employees in the Pakistani city of Peshawar killed 15 people on Wednesday, officials said, and a militant group claimed responsibility, saying it was revenge for death sentences passed against Islamists. The attack took place on a main road after the bus picked up government workers from districts surrounding Peshawar and was taking them to work in the city. Senior police official Mohammad Kashif said 15 people were killed and 35 wounded. Saudi Arabia is reported to be seeking a multi-billion dollar bank loan to shore up its finances as plunging world oil prices take their toll on the economy. But it’s not the only Gulf state in trouble; other oil producers are in a far more precarious position. Bahrain and other Gulf states urgently need to diversify their economies. Oil has plunged from $120 a barrel in 2014 to around $40 today. The ratings agency Moody’s has downgraded its outlook for Bahrain’s economy to ‘junk’ status. It’s not alone, said Jason Tuvey of London-based analysts Capital Economics. “Oman and Bahrain are where there’s going to have to be an enormous fiscal squeeze over the next couple of years. And growth there is going to be extremely weak. On top of that there are political concerns in both countries,” said Tuvey. Oil provides around 80% of Saudi Arabia’s total income. But that revenue has halved in the past two years. The government is running a deficit of 15% and is reported to be seeking a bank loan of $8 billion.

In a bid to raise cash, foreign central banks and government institutions sold $57.2 billion of U.S. Treasury debt and other notes in January, according to figures released on Tuesday. That is up from $48 billion in December and the highest monthly tally on record going back to 1978. It’s part of a broader trend that gathered steam last year when central banks sold a record $225 billion of U.S. debt. “Foreigners have no longer been our BFF when it comes to buying U.S. Treasuries,” Peter Boockvar, chief market analyst at The Lindsey Group, wrote in a client note. So what are foreign central bankers doing with these piles of cash? They’re mostly using the funds to stimulate their own economies as the global growth slowdown and crash in oil prices continue to take their toll. For instance, China has been liquidating its holdings of foreign debt to pump money into its slowing economy, plummeting currency and extremely volatile stock market. China, the largest owner of U.S. debt, trimmed its Treasury holdings by $8.2 billion in January, the Treasury Department said. The actual decline was likely larger considering China reported selling $100 billion of foreign-exchange reserves in January.

The sale of cannabis could infuse up to $44 billion into the US economy by the end of the decade, according to the annual report from Marijuana Business Daily posted on Monday. If the current business and legalization trend continues, annual revenue will increase from $14-17 billion this year to $24-$44 billion by 2020, says the report. The numbers include the sale of marijuana as well as products associated with the growth of cannabis. They include growers, grow-lights, marijuana accoutrements and buying property for cultivation in states where the industry is legalized. Every dollar spent on marijuana at retail leads to an extra $3 working its way into the economy, according to the organization. “We’ve been expecting rapid growth in the marijuana industry for a while now, and that’s exactly what’s playing out,” said MBD managing editor Chris Walsh. He stressed the main drivers to growth are recreational sales in US states of Colorado, Washington and Oregon.

Headline: Deaths from flooding in Pakistan rises to 42
Authorities in Pakistan say the death toll from flash floods caused by torrential rains in the country has climbed to 42 amid the destruction of more homes. The National Disaster Management Authority said in a statement on Monday that 75 houses were damaged in different parts of the southwestern province of Balochistan, and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province near the border with Afghanistan. It said that at least 70 people have also sustained injuries. Additionally, the death toll from the collapse of a coal mine shaft caused by the severe rainfall in the mountainous northwestern Orakzai tribal district has climbed to seven. Ten people have also been injured. “The rescue operation has ended and we have seven people dead and 10 injured. Sixteen others have been rescued from the mine,” Zubair Khan, a top government official in the district, said. More than 30 miners were trapped after the shaft caved in amid heavy downpours on Sunday.
