Obama in the clouds on ISIS
Why would Barack Obama want to give hundreds of millions of dollars of weapons to groups inside Syria that are selling weapons to ISIS and regularly fighting alongside them? Is he really that clueless about what is going on in the Middle East? Obama’s strategy to “defeat ISIS” makes absolutely no sense at all. He has the audacity to stand up in front of the American people and “explain” to us why we need to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to arm groups that are clearly aligned with ISIS.
First of all, if you want to defeat someone you don’t give weapons to their friends.
-The FSA and other groups of “moderate” fighters inside Syria do not consider ISIS to be an enemy. Rather, they consider ISIS to be an important ally in the struggle to overthrow the Syrian government. In fact, many “moderate” units have actually joined ISIS in recent months. If Obama gives more weapons to the “moderate” fighters in Syria, it is inevitable that a lot of them will end up in the hands of ISIS.
Secondly, if you want to conduct air strikes against ISIS, you have got to get permission from the nation where you will be conducting those air strikes.

Now onto what the Psalm 83 and Ezekiel countries have to say about this board coalition:
Netanyahu: Israel fully supports Obama against ISIS
Less than 24 hours after US President Barack Obama laid out his strategy for the new chapter in the war on terror, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “Israel fully supports Obama’s call for a united action against ISIS.” Netanyahu asked the crowd to imagine “would have happened if on 9/11 al-Qaeda had nuclear weapons? You know they would have used them against New York and Washington.” Israel has not been asked to be a part of this coalition – just like it was not asked to be part of the American coalition in 1991, when the US beat Iraq’s Saddam Hussein back from Kuwait, which he attempted to occupy.

To everyone who comes to my site, I need your help! See message below.
Hi, Frank
You mentioned at the end of your videos. That you would pray for some one if they would E-mail.
I lost my job with the City of Eugene on the 9th. I wasn’t able to sleep so I decided to E-mail. My wife has had a job in salem for some time, so she had to move closer to work to drive that distance was killing her back. So she moved last month. The plan was I would get a job in salem working for the city, then move up a little later. But I wasn’t able to make it up and get a job with the city before I lost my Job here in Eugene. Any way not ramble on. I would like to request prayer for a job. I know god doesn’t want families to be split apart. And I would like to move to Salem with my Wife and daughter.
Thanks frank.
Would you all please pray for Larry S. that the Lord open the door for more work for him.
Thanks, Frank

Headline: UN confirms 45 Fiji peacekeepers freed by Syrian rebels
The United Nations on Thursday confirmed the release of all 45 Fijian peacekeepers who had been held for two weeks by Al-Qaida-linked militants in the Golan Heights on the Israeli-Syrian border. “Today at 1430 hours local time, the 45 Fijian peacekeepers who had been detained were handed to UNDOF at Position 80,” the UN press office said in a statement. “All the 45 peacekeepers are in good condition and will proceed back to Camp Foar for medical assessment.” An Israel Defense Forces spokeswoman also said the Fijian peacekeepers had crossed into Israeli territory. The Fijians were kidnapped last month by the Nusra Front, an group battling the Syrian army, after the militants overran a crossing point in the so-called disengagement zone that the UN peacekeeping mission known as UNDOF has monitored since 1974. The cease-fire line was agreed after a 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

Headline: Dept. Defense Minister: Hamas Likely to Restart Hostilities
Headline: Israeli authorities shut down ‘Hamas-linked’ Islamist organization in Nazareth
Israel’s deputy foreign minister warned Thursday that Hamas was likely to resume “violence” if it feels it has made no political gains from upcoming talks in Cairo. The remarks came just two weeks after Israel and the Islamist terrorist group that dominates Gaza agreed a truce to end a 50-day war that killed more than 2,200 people and caused enormous destruction in the coastal territory. “There are chances that Hamas will restart its routine of violence, this is a possibility we can’t ignore,” Tzahi Hanegbi told Army Radio. “The resumption of fighting would not happen in the short term, since Hamas will wait for negotiations in Cairo, as well as the October Gaza donors’ conference. “But when Hamas understand that the war has not brought them the smallest political success, they could resume fighting.” Indirect talks between Hamas and Israel are to take place mid-September in Cairo, Palestinian officials say.

Headline: PA won’t deploy forces in Gaza unless Israel presents peace plan
The Palestinian Authority has no intention to deploy forces in the Gaza Strip if there is not also a clear diplomatic end-game peace initiative between Jerusalem and Ramallah on the horizon, a senior Palestinian source said Wednesday. But the source also said the US had threatened the PA with sanctions if it takes unilateral moves toward joining international organizations. There have recently been several conversations between Israeli and Palestinian officials with the hopes of restarting talks, the source said, but in all of them it was apparent that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not have in mind a new diplomatic plan or a map of a future Palestinian state. In a speech on August 20, Netanyahu spoke of a “new diplomatic horizon” in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict and expressed hope that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas would take part. Abbas has increasingly voiced a demand that Israel produce a map showing just where it believe the borders of a Palestinian state should be, as a starting point for further negotiations. “Israel needs to sit with us and write a diplomatic plan that links Gaza and the West Bank, that forms a diplomatic horizon and a peace agreement,” the Palestinian source told The Times of Israel. “The PA doesn’t aim to send forces to the Gaza Strip or to deploy them there as a buffer force between Israel and Hamas without such a plan. We would reach a situation in which Hamas and Israel will alternately attack us. The PA has no intention to take a role in Gaza, or to police Gaza, without a diplomatic horizon.” The source also stressed that in the PA there has been a firm decision to not get involved in Gaza without a clear agreement from Hamas that all the weapons that are currently in the Gaza Strip become “one weapon under one authority” — that is, that Hamas concede authority to Abbas’s PA. He also warned that if there is no diplomatic breakthrough soon, within the next six to twelve months, security cooperation between Israel and the PA in the West Bank would stop.

Headline: Exclusive: Hamas threatened UNRWA personnel at gun-point during Gaza war
The Jerusalem Post obtained new information from informed sources this week that Hamas used violence and threats against UN personnel in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge. It was discovered that during the operation Hamas was hiding weapons in facilities run by the UN aid agency UNRWA and firing rockets from nearby proximity to UNRWA schools. The Post has now learned that UNRWA workers were subject to Hamas threats at gun-point during the operation. In a number of incidents, Hamas terrorists threatened to kill UNRWA personnel if they revealed that the Islamist group was using the UN facilities for purposes of war to ensure that they would not speak out about Hamas’s activities. Details have also emerged of the fate of medical supplies and food that were intended to be distributed by UNRWA to residents of Gaza in need of humanitarian aid. On a number of occasions, armed Hamas operatives forcefully confiscated the supplies, taking them for their own use. In a few cases, both during and after the Gaza war, trucks carrying supplies to UNRWA facilities were intercepted and taken over by Hamas terrorists. With Cairo hosting a donors conference on the rehabilitation of the Gaza Strip in the coming months, the new revelations add to the question of whether such reconstruction aid can be provided without it falling into the hands of Hamas. The UN itself has acknowledged the problem. During the war, UNRWA officially condemned the placing of weapons in its installations, and called it “a flagrant violation of the inviolability of its premises under international law.” UNRWA Spokesperson Christopher Gunness denied the newly-reported details, saying “I have checked and double checked with sources in Gaza and there is no evidence of death threats made to UNRWA personnel. There is no evidence that any UNRWA aid was stolen. Our aid delivery is secure and we have shown it to be so time and time again over many years. Moreover, we have demonstrated this repeatedly to the satisfaction of the Israeli military authorities and major donor such as the US. Everything is checked under strict procedures from the point of origin to the point of delivery. There were two occasions after the fighting in 2008-9 when food aid was stolen. On both occasions I made strong public condemnations and on both occasions everything was returned. We are open, transparent and secure.”

Headline: Jordanian Parliamentarians: Cancel Gas Agreement with Israel
Some 40 Jordanian parliamentarians have demanded that the Jordanian government prevent the national electricity company from signing an agreement to import gas from Israel, the Jordanian-based Ammon News website reported on Wednesday. In a memorandum submitted by MP Khamis Attia during a session yesterday, the group said: “We the undersigned deputies call on the government to prevent the national electricity company from signing an agreement to import gas from the State of Israel.” “We deplore any agreement to import gas from Israel. The government or the national electricity company must not sign any agreement with Israel which would contribute to the occupation,” added the MPs. The MPs considered “the solution to Jordan’s energy problem is to use alternative energy through partnerships with other Arab states and not with Israel,” according to Ammon News. The move comes a week after the U.S.-based giant Noble Energy announced that Israel is to supply Jordan with natural gas from its vast Leviathan offshore gas field over a period of 15 years. A source close to the deal said it was worth $15 billion (11.4 billion euros) – a significant chunk of some $60 billion which Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has said will come from Israel’s offshore gas exports.

Headline: Four Hezbollah fighters killed near Lebanese border village
At least four Hezbollah fighters were killed overnight Wednesday during clashes with jihadists on the outskirts of a Lebanese border village in the Bekaa Valley, security sources told The Daily Star Thursday. Fierce clashes erupted between Hezbollah fighters and rebel groups a few kilometers away from the village of Ras Baalbek, near a Hezbollah position in the region. A total of 17 people were either killed or wounded but only four men were identified as Lebanese resistance fighters, the source said. The incident would have remained under wraps if the two ambulances did not breakdown on their way to a Bekaa hospital, a source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said.

Headline: Army defuses 100 kilo bomb in Lebanon border town
Lebanese Army soldiers defused a car rigged with 100 kilograms of explosives Thursday on the outskirts of the Bekaa Valley border town of Arsal. In a statement, the military said that soldiers grew suspicious of a white Kia with a Syrian license plate parked on the side of the road in the Ain Shaab neighborhood in Arsal. The military cordoned off the area and discovered that the vehicle contained 100 kilograms of explosives packed in a metal box, and connected to wires and a detonator. Earlier, Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV had said the car was discovered near an Army checkpoint on the main road leading to Arsal, not far from a gas station with explosives hidden in its metal sheets. The Army launched an investigation into the incident after a military expert defused the bomb.

Headline: MP: Saudi Arabia should not deliver aid to Lebanese Army
Saudi Arabia should not deliver the $4 billion of pledged aid to Lebanon because it would be used in Hezbollah and Iran’s projects that target the country’s Sunnis and Christians, north Lebanon MP Khaled Daher said Thursday. “I call on king of Saudi Arabia to abstain from paying any sum from the $4 billion,” Daher said during a news conference at his Tripoli residence. Saudi Arabia has pledged $3 billion to purchase French military equipment and arms for Lebanon’s Army, while also donating $1 billion to strengthen security. “These billions will be spent on an Army whose decisions are not in the hands of the government,” Daher said. “Instead the [Army] is being used as a tool against Arabs and against the Sunnis and Christians.” The MP warns that Army Intelligence is marginalizing the Sunni community in the north – especially in Tripoli. “I announce my distrust of Lebanese Army Intelligence and its leadership, who have never defended us,” he said. According to Daher, Army Intelligence is cooperating with Hezbollah, which explains the disparity between the pressure on northerners and the lack of attention on Hezbollah’s regions and militias.

Syria Headline: Syrian air raids kill 11 in extremist-held town
Syrian government airstrikes, including one on a crowded sheep market, killed at least 11 people on Thursday in a northern town controlled by the Islamic State group, activists said. After largely ignoring the rise of the al-Qaida splinter group over the past year, President Bashar Assad’s air force has begun to target Islamic State militants more regularly since the extremist faction seized control of much of northern Syria and a large part of neighboring Iraq in June. Two activist groups, the Aleppo Media Center and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Thursday’s air raids struck the town of al-Bab in Aleppo province. The Britain-based Observatory said at least 11 people were killed and more than 17 wounded. The AMC put the death toll at 19 and said another 20 people were wounded.

Syria Headline: Iraq Tribal Chief Says Arms to Militia are Being Sold in Syria
A prominent tribal chief in Iraq’s Anbar province claimed that weapons supplied to a Sunni militia to fight Islamic State militants are instead being sold off in Syria. Qasim al-Karwali, leader of the Tribes Revolution, accused Ahmad Aburish, head of the Awakening Council, of the illegal arms sales to opposition and government forces Syria. Aburish denied the accusations. The Iraqi government and US army created the Sunni Awakening Council in 2006 to drive out al-Qaeda forces from Anbar, Iraq’s largest province. Since then Baghdad has maintained some level of ties with Aburish’s council, arming and funding them to win their allegiance against radical Sunni groups. Aburish denied the accusations, calling them “an attempt to stop our arms supplies to fight the armed groups.” “Armed groups, especially the IS try to distort public opinion against the Awakening Council by saying that we are selling our weapons to Syria,” Aburish told Rudaw. “These are baseless accusations.” In recent years, Anbar’s Sunni population have accused leaders of the Awakening Council of collaboration with Iraq’s Shiite government at the expense of local grievances. The accusations made by al-Karwali on Tuesday come at a time when the US and other NATO countries have pledged support to Iraqi groups who fight the Islamic State.

Headline: Islamic State jihadists planning encryption-protected ‘cyber caliphate’ so they can carry out hacking attacks on West
Islamic State militants are planning the creation of a ‘cyber caliphate’ protected by their own encryption software – from behind which they will launch massive hacking attacks on the U.S. and the West. Both Islamic State and Al Qaeda claim to be actively recruiting skilled hackers in a bid to create a team of jihadist computer experts capable of causing devastating cyber disruptions to Western institutions. They are now boasting it is only a matter of time before their plan becomes a reality. Steve Stalinsky, an executive director of the Middle East Media Research Institute, told Fox News: ‘They are forward thinking and are experimenting with hacking. In the future, the jihadists’ cyber army’s activities will become a daily reality.’ It was reported the possible targets of the jihadists’ cyber attacks will be the websites of U.S. government organisations, energy companies, transport systems and banks. Islamic State is noted for its use of advanced technology and social media on a scale unprecedented for such rebel groups. Large numbers of Islamic State fighters are young, highly educated Westerners who are fighting the holy war with sophisticated backgrounds and training with digital technology.

Headline: ISIS Utilizing British Mosques for Recruitment and Planning Future Attacks
Networks of radicals are re-emerging in British mosques and elsewhere to encourage and facilitate Muslims wanting to travel to Syria and Iraq to fight for Islamic State (Isis). Until now most fighters from Britain who are known to have travelled to Syria have been persuaded and helped via online networks where extremists provide advice on crossing the Turkish order and linking up with Isis fighters. But a combination of a Turkish border clampdown and a focus by counter-terrorist police on taking down online networks has led to recruitment on the ground becoming more important, sources say. Communities of radicals recruiting young Brits are thought to include preachers, battle-hardened returning fighters and jihad sympathizers. Examples of on the ground recruitment have been seen in Cardiff and Birmingham – amid wider evidence that the UK is being specifically targeted by those with links to Isis in Europe.

A senior Homeland Security (DHS) official confirmed to Congress on Wednesday that militants associated with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) are planning to enter the United States via the porous southern border. Francis Taylor, under secretary for intelligence and analysis at DHS, told senators during a hearing that ISIL supporters are known to be plotting ways to infiltrate the United States through the border. “There have been Twitter, social media exchanges among ISIL adherents across the globe speaking about that as a possibility,” Taylor told Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) in response to a question about “recent reports on Twitter and Facebook of messages that would urge infiltration into the U.S. across our southwestern border.” “Certainly any infiltration across our border would be a threat,” Taylor said, explaining that border security agents are working to tighten measures that would prevent this from taking place.

Headline: Russia stokes tensions with the west by cutting gas exports to Poland
A decision by Russia to cut gas exports to Poland without warning has rekindled fears about Europe‘s reliance on Siberian gas at a time of increasing tension between Moscow and the west. The Polish state energy group, PGNiG, said it was trying to find out why volumes had been slashed by up to 24% when it had been exporting gas itself to Ukraine to make up for Russian shortfalls there. Its counterpart in Kiev, Ukrtransgaz, accused Kremlin-controlled Gazprom of penalising Poland and undermining onward gas supplies to Kiev. “Today Russia started limiting gas supplies to Poland in order to disrupt the reverse (flows) from Poland that we receive … Poland stopped reverse supplies to Ukraine in the range of 4m cubic metres,” said Ihor Prokopiv, chief executive of Ukrtransgaz, according to the Russian news agency, RIA. Mutual suspicions are higher than at any point since the collapse of the Soviet Union, following the conflict in Ukraine and western accusations that Russia has augmented the rebellion in the east with its own troops. Moscow denies the claim.

Headline: Putin promises new weapons to fend Western threats
Russia will counter military moves by the U.S. and NATO with an array of new nuclear and conventional weapons, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday as the military successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine. At the same time, he emphasized that Russia will not enter a new arms race and will tightly control its military budget to avoid overburdening the economy. Putin accused the West of using the crisis in Ukraine to reinvigorate NATO, warning that Moscow will ponder a response to the alliance’s decision to create a rapid-reaction “spearhead” force to protect Eastern Europe. The statement appeared to signal that the Russian leader is determined to pursue a tough course in the face of more Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis that has sent Russia-West relations plummeting to their lowest point since the Cold War.

Ukraine’s Parliamentary Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov cautioned Thursday that if peace talks with Russia and Russian-backed rebels fail, martial law will be imposed in eastern Ukraine. “If Donbas is not cleared peacefully, we will have no alternative to clear it of invaders by imposing martial law and mobilizing all of the resources of the country,” Turchynov said, adding, “I am also convinced that if the Russian aggression does not stop, we will be able to see the effect of such sanctions from the West, which will lead to the economic collapse of the Russian Federation.” In an interview with Focus magazine, Turchynov acknowledged he was “very skeptical about them [Russia] wanting to peacefully get out of Ukraine.” “If the path of peace brings no results, alternative we will have no alternative to imposing martial law and mobilizing all of the resources of the country.” The constitution authorizes the president to declare martial law, he noted. “If the president makes the decision to submit such a decree, the parliament will always support it.”

Iran: Jeremiah 49:34-39 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, The foremost of their might. 36 Against Elam I will bring the four winds From the four quarters of heaven, And scatter them toward all those winds; There shall be no nations where the outcasts of Elam will not go. 37 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies And before those who seek their life. I will bring disaster upon them, My fierce anger,’ says the Lord; ‘And I will send the sword after them Until I have consumed them. 38 I will set My throne in Elam, And will destroy from there the king and the princes,’ says the Lord. 39 ‘But it shall come to pass in the latter days: I will bring back the captives of Elam,’ says the Lord.”

Officials from Iran and Britain, France and Germany were due Thursday to hold nuclear talks in Vienna towards reaching a potentially historic accord by November.
The three European countries form part of a six-nation group including the United States, Russia and China due to resume negotiations with Iran in New York on September 18.
The closed-door discussions in the Austrian capital, announced by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton’s office, follow bilateral U.S.-Iranian discussions in Geneva last week.
A U.S. State Department spokeswoman told reporters Tuesday that those talks in Switzerland were an “in-depth exchange on the core issues,” without giving further details.

Headline: Afghan regional leader threatens protests over disputed election
A powerful backer of Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah said on Thursday his supporters would launch street protests and occupy government buildings if they were unhappy with the outcome of a disputed election. The statement risked exacerbating tensions in a two-month political crisis that has destabilized Afghanistan ahead of the withdrawal of most foreign troops by the end of 2014, 13 years into a war against Taliban insurgents. The final results of a U.N.-supervised investigation into allegations of mass vote rigging are expected within days, and Abdullah’s rival, former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani, is widely expected to be declared the winner.

Special forces commander Fadhil al-Hasi told Reuters on Wednesday that militants belonging to a group called Majlis al-Shoura had attacked an army checkpoint in Benghazi on Tuesday, killing five soldiers. “Twenty-five soldiers are missing,” the army official said, adding that the soldiers had most likely been abducted during the attack. Headline: Official: Report of missing planes from Libya untrue
A report that 11 planes were stolen or missing days after Libya’s Tripoli International Airport was overtaken by Islamist militias is unfounded, a State Department official told Washington lawmakers Wednesday while defending U.S. policy in the war-torn country. “We have had the opportunity to examine that issue, and I can say categorically it is without foundation,” said Gerald Feierstein, deputy assistant secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The report first appeared in the conservative website Washington Free Beacon, which cited an unnamed U.S. official. It alleged that intelligence agencies had warned that Islamist militias working in concert with al-Qaeda affiliates could use the airliners to launch attacks on U.S. allies in North Africa or Europe. And the attacks would be timed to the 9/11 anniversary. Feierstein dismissed the report as untrue during the hearing on the chaos gripping Libya. He said the U.S. has a long-term strategy to implement a political resolution for the oil-rich country. Warring militias currently control Libya’s major cities, and the elected parliament has fled the capital of Tripoli and is operating out of a car ferry docked in the eastern town of Tobruk.

Headline: Ansar al-Shariah in Tunisia Gives Condolences for Godane, Urges Revenge
Tunisia’s state news agency says a police station was attacked by relatives of a known radical militant after he was arrested, resulting in the wounding of three members of the security force. Responding to extremist threats ahead of October elections, Tunisian police have been arresting those suspected of ties with radical groups. Interior Ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Aroui said police in the southern town of Douz resorted to tear gas to disperse a crowd which had gathered, and arrested 21 members of the extended family late Wednesday. Press reports Thursday say the police were injured by birdshot fired by some shotgun-wielding protesters. Militant groups with ties to al-Qaida have vowed to disrupt election set for October that would complete the country’s democratic transition.

Headline: Turkey not taking part in combat missions against IS: official
Turkey will not allow a US-led coalition to attack jihadists in neighboring Iraq and Syria from its air bases, nor will it take part in combat operations against militants, a government official told AFP Thursday. “Turkey will not be involved in any armed operation but will entirely concentrate on humanitarian operations,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
“Incirlik will be used only for logistical purposes and humanitarian assistance,” the source, referring to a southern air base used for US and NATO operations in Iraq.
The decision echoes Turkey’s refusal in 2003 to abet the US offensive to oust Saddam Hussein, which triggered a crisis between the allies.

Headline: Armenia frightened by West-Russia relations escalation
Escalation of West-Russia relations poses a real threat to Armenia which depends on its giant northern neighbor politically and economically. West’s sanctions against Russian would fire back. Russia changed its state of the market, attracting new investors. Tension is on therise and no one can predict the possible results. This has put the Caucasus country in a great panic. Armenia made its final decision to join the Eurasian Economic Union and quite obviously the economic difficulties facing Russia will affect the Armenian economy as well. MP from the Republican Party of Armenia, Co-Chairman of the Commission for Armenia-EU Cooperation, is sure that the growing tension in Russia-West relations is bad for Armenia. Samvel Farmanyan referred to the current political turbulences in the Middle East and Ukraine as sign of the new cold war. And Armenia will have to experience tough conditions due to its undecided position between Russia and Europe. Farmanyan added that Armenia has always suffered from the escalation of ties between Russia and the West, as each time, the small Caucasus state felt itself at the junction of conflicting interests of the world’s superpowers. “In this context, I urge the political forces to stop dividing the Armenian society into pro-Russian and pro-Western groups,” he stressed. The government’s decision to join the Customs Union has divided the society into two groups, one supporting the prospective membership at the Russia-led alliance and the other one calling for proximity to Europe.

Luke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword. Luke 21:9: wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions) Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)
Headline: Arrests as Ferguson protesters plan shutdown
A planned highway shutdown fell through Wednesday as a wall of officers in riot gear kept people who planned to protest the Ferguson police shooting from walking onto Interstate 70 during the late afternoon commute. State troopers and St. Louis city and county officers warned the roughly 150 demonstrators who gathered in a nearby suburb to stay out of the road as they protested last month’s shooting of Michael Brown, a black, unarmed 18-year-old, by a white officer. There were nearly as many officers as demonstrators. Organizers said the protest in Berkeley was designed as an act of nonviolent civil disobedience similar to a 1999 demonstration in the same location. During that protest, hundreds of people shut down the interstate in a dispute over minority hiring for road construction projects. Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum said that 35 people were arrested, most on charges of unlawful assembly. Nothum said protesters threw rocks, concrete blocks, bricks and bottles, leading to four charges of assault on a law enforcement officer. A smaller group later went to the nearby Ferguson police station before a heavy, late afternoon thunderstorm dispersed most of the protesters.

Headline: Nigeria’s Boko Haram puts Maiduguri under ‘siege’
Nigeria’s militant Islamists have “completely surrounded” Maiduguri, the main city in north-eastern Borno state, traditional elders have warned. The military needed to “fortify” the city, which had a population of more than two million, to prevent an assault “from all directions”, they said. The Boko Haram militants had “annexed” areas that were about 50km (30 miles) from Maiduguri, they said. Boko Haram declared a caliphate in areas it controls last month. The government has not yet commented on the statement issued by the Borno Elders Forum (BEF).

Headline: Yemen fears al-Qaida attacks amid deadly protests
Yemeni officials said Thursday that security forces have gone on high alert, fearing that al-Qaida members are streaming into the capital, where a Shiite rebel group’s demonstrations have turned deadly. The reports of al-Qaida infiltration came as the government sought international mediation in reaching a peaceful resolution to its conflict with the Shiite rebel group known as the Hawthis, which clashed with police in the capital Sanaa earlier this week. Officials fear that Sunni extremists will exploit the state of unrest in Sanaa and attempt to seize government institutions. The country’s top intelligence officials convened Thursday to discuss information about possible al-Qaida attacks, security officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Headline: Spain’s Catalans protest to demand secession vote
Separatists in northeastern Spain swarmed Barcelona by the tens of thousands Thursday, waving independence flags as they demanded an independence referendum that the Spanish government insists would be illegal. Many sported yellow-and-red shirts with the phrase “Now is the time” and shouted “Independencia!” in Catalan as they crowded two avenues that look like a “V” from the air and positioned themselves there to signifying their desire to vote, getting a boost from Scotland’s upcoming independence vote. Television images showed masses of at least tens of thousands of people participating as the protest got underway. Organizers said 500,000 people had registered, but Catalonia’s regional government said it would not provide a crowd count until the event finished. Catalonia regional leader Artur Mas said his government is not wavering from plans to hold a Nov. 9 referendum in the region of 7.6 million people, even though experts say any attempt is sure to be blocked by Spain’s Constitutional Court. Mas has repeatedly said he will not call an illegal vote.

Headline: 2 Philippine Soldiers Killed in Clashes with Rebels
The Philippine military says two soldiers and an undetermined number of fighters from a Muslim rebel group were killed during a gunbattle Thursday. Officials say the fighting began when rebels from the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) group attacked an army detachment in the southern province of North Cotabato. The fighting comes a day after President Benigno Aquino asked lawmakers to pass a deal that would create an autonomous Muslim region. The proposed self-governing region is part of a historic peace accord agreed to earlier this year by the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Headline: Japan rain forces about 1million people to leave their homes
Heavy rain has hit the Island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, forcing officials to order the evacuation of nearly one million people living near rivers. On Thursday, the torrential rain flooded roads across the prefecture, causing all transport to come to a standstill and grounding flights. According to Satoshi Ebihara, an official in Japan’s Meteorological Agency, at least 100 millimeters of rain per hour poured overnight in some parts of Hokkaido. He said at a news conference that unstable weather is anticipated to continue throughout Thursday due to low pressure systems. “It is a situation where landslides, flooding, and serious calamities may occur at any time,” Ebihara added, calling on residents in affected areas to follow the local authorities’ instructions for safe evacuation.

Headline: South Dakota sees earliest snowfall since 1888
An early September winter storm in the Black Hills has dumped up to 8 inches of snow in the area, while Rapid City received its earliest snowfall in more than 120 years. Jon Chamberlain, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Rapid City, said almost 1 inch of snow had fallen in downtown Rapid City by 8:30 a.m. while 2 inches was measured in higher elevations in town. The snowfall in downtown Rapid City is the earliest in the city since 1888, the NWS said. The previous early snowfall mark was seven-tenths of an inch on Sept. 13, 1970. Chamberlain said while it is unusual for Rapid City to see snowfall this early, it isn’t for the Black Hills. “It’s a little on the high side, though,” he said. Downtown Custer reported 8 inches of snow, while 7 inches was reported at Mount Rushmore. Other snowfall totals: 6 inches five miles south of Hill City; 4,5 inches in HIll City and 4 inches in Sundance, Wyo.
