Headline: Israel tells US it will act if IS reaches Jordan
In talks with US officials about the Islamic State this week, Israel has made clear that should the extremist group start operating in neighboring Jordan, it will not hesitate to act, Channel 2 reported Friday citing diplomatic sources. On Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was doing its part in confronting worldwide jihadist terrorism, though not all of its efforts are known to the public and expressed Jerusalem’s full support for the American-led offensive against the Islamic State organization unveiled Wednesday. In a major foreign policy address, Netanyahu also warned of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, saying this would cause the “ultimate terror.” Efforts to weaken Sunni terrorists should not result in strengthening Shiite radicalism, he urged.

Headline: High-level talks between Israel, US largely focus on Gaza, peace process
Israeli and US representatives held high-level talks in Washington on Thursday night, as part of the semi-annual series of US-Israel meetings dubbed ‘Strategic Dialogue.’
The US-Israel discussions, headed by Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz and Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, centered on a host of hot-button issues – from the changes engulfing the Middle East, to the ever-expanding threat of Islamic State, to joining forces against regional terrorism. The US State Department emphasized the importance of reaching a lasting agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, following the latest round of armed conflict in the Gaza Strip. The parties discussed the recent seven-week conflict in the coastal territory and the urgent need to achieve durable peace and a permanent halt to the fighting. Representatives of both sides have agreed to take action to rehabilitate and provide much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza, a statement by the State Department said, while at the same time pushing to strengthen the Palestinian Authority. Washington reiterated its concern over settlement activity, in light of Israel’s most recent decision to expand its state land in the West Bank by 4,000 dunams.

Headline: Abbas: PA, Israel reach economic agreement in West Bank, Gaza
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Friday that an agreement has been reached with Israel in which the Palestinian Authority will be able to export and import goods and services to and from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. “Anything the [Palestinian] Authority wants, it will get, and we will also be able to [work] in the Gaza Strip. This will alleviate the situation for the residents there,” he was quoted by Channel 10 as saying. According to the Palestinian news agnecy Ma’an, the agreement was reached with the help of United Nations representatives. There was no immediate official announcement or response from the Israeli government.

Two weeks after the end of the Gaza war, there is growing evidence that Hamas militants used residential areas as cover for launching rockets at Israel, at least at times. Even Hamas now admits “mistakes” were made. But Hamas says it had little choice in Gaza’s crowded urban landscape, took safeguards to keep people away from the fighting, and that a heavy-handed Israeli response is to blame for the deaths of hundreds of Palestinian civilians. “Gaza, from Beit Hanoun in the north to Rafah in the south, is one uninterrupted urban chain that Israel has turned into a war zone,” said Ghazi Hamad, a senior Hamas official in Gaza. Increasingly, the discussion is not about whether the Hamas rockets were fired from civilian areas, but exactly how close they were to the actual buildings. “The Israelis kept saying rockets were fired from schools or hospitals when in fact they were fired 200 or 300 meters (yards) away. Still, there were some mistakes made and they were quickly dealt with,” Hamad told The Associated Press, offering the first acknowledgment by a Hamas official that, in some cases, militants fired rockets from or near residential areas or civilian facilities.

MK Moshe Feiglin (Likud) visited eastern Jerusalem and the Temple Mount on Thursday with members of the Internal Affairs Committee, where he told Arutz Sheva that he is convinced the wave of terror in the capital will only increase in coming days. “The loss of control over Jerusalem, and by continuation also over Gaza, started on the Temple Mount,” Feiglin said, while at the French Hill gas station that Arab rioters tried to explode on Sunday. Feiglin’s comments come in the wake of the dismantling of a new access ramp to the Temple Mount in a folding to Jordanian pressure, and recommendations by MKs, including those of the Jewish Home, to maintain the status quo of de facto Jordanian Waqf (Islamic Trust) control. “The one who controls the Mount controls the land, and first of all (controls) Jerusalem,” emphasized Feiglin to Arutz Sheva. “Whoever thought that they could abandon the Mount for over 40 years to Hamas and extremist Islam and conquer Jerusalem through the Zionist method of ‘another sheep another dunam’ (i.e. building) – I think we must understand now that they were wrong.” Feiglin stressed that the Temple Mount is the center of Jerusalem, warning that many “still think we can take our Zionist actions in reverse, and that the Israeli leadership that ignores the Mount will advance us in the process of redemption and everything will be okay.” However, the abandonment of the Mount and “depressed” ending of Operation Protective Edge, in which decisive military action to remove the Hamas threat was not recorded, will only spur terror in Jerusalem according to the MK. “Hamas in its mind won the war, its standing in the Muslim world was increased enormously, and what we did to them in Gaza interests (Hamas leader) Ismail Haniyeh about as much as last year’s snow,” remarked Feiglin.

Headline: Anti-Semitic Attacks up 400% in UK, Double in France
Anti-Semitic attacks nearly doubled in France in the first seven months of 2014, the country’s main Jewish group said Thursday. A total of 529 anti-Semitic actions or threats were registered up to the end of July, against 276 for the same period last year, the Council of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF) said, citing figures gleaned from the French Interior Ministry. The acts included violence against individuals, arson and vandalism, and “exacerbate the growing unease that oppresses Jews in France each day and overshadows their future”, CRIF said in a statement. Yet more worrying, the group added, is the appearance of new forms of violence against Jews – including attacks by organized gangs and the targeting of synagogues, as well as acts of vandalism against Jewish businesses and planned terrorist attacks. Meanwhile in the UK, the Community Security Trust (CST) anti-Semitism watchdog group reports 302 anti-Semitic incidents in July alone, making a whopping 400% increase over the same month last year. English anti-Semitism has been heard from the government itself during Operation Protective Edge, with the government threatening to cut 12 arms export licenses with Israel over the fighting against the terrorist group Hamas. Likewise, radical left-wing British MP George Galloway infamously declared his city of Bradford in northern England “Israeli free.”

Headline: Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan calls to end ties with ‘the Jews’
In a protest against Israel’s 50-day operation against Hamas and other terror operatives in the Gaza Strip, a senior member of the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood decried the kingdom’s diplomatic relations with the Jewish state, and offered his and the Jordanian people’s unwavering support for Palestinian “resistance” fighters who wage “jihad” against IDF soldiers and Israeli civilians. Speaking to a crowd of hundreds of protesters on August 29, Himam Said, the general supervisor of the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood, said that the Hashemite Kingdom’s population, unlike its political leaders, backed the Palestinians in their struggle to defeat the state of Israel. “I have a message to official Jordan,” the Brotherhood representative said, according to a translation provided Thursday by MEMRI, the Middle East Media Research Institute, apparently addressing Jordanian diplomats and members of parliament. “This message is not directed at the people of Jordan, for the people of Jordan are here,” he continued, gesturing at the masses of people who had gathered at the scene. “The entire population of Jordan supports the resistance and the jihad, the tribes as well as the refugee camps, from north to south.” Said went on to lead the crowd in a chant, praising Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashaal, as the demonstrators in the plaza waved flags of the Gaza-based terror group. “I say to official Jordan, your ties with the Jews are hopeless, and the partner of the hopeless is hopeless too,” Said continued.

Suspected Nusra Front and ISIS militants attacked several stone quarries near Arsal’s hills Friday, destroying equipment and stealing bulldozers, according to some media reports. While several media outlets said the attacks were carried out by fighters with the Nusra Front, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that militants from both the Nusra Front and ISIS had raided the three quarries – belonging to Mohammad Alouli, Melhem Hujeiri and Hani Hujeiri – destroying machines and driving back to the hills with several stolen bulldozers.

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt called for a meeting between former Lebanese PM and Future Movement leader MP Saad Hariri and Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, according to a report by As-Safir newspaper in remarks published Friday. “Hariri and Nasrallah are the only two leaders capable of creating a relative security network in Lebanon in this difficult period,” Jumblatt said. Jumblatt added that the threat of the Islamic State jihadist group should not be underestimated. “If IS manage to link Arsal to Akkar as they plan, then we would be facing a huge problem,” Jumblatt said. He also called for politician to support the army. “The army has become the only sign of hope in this period of darkness,” he said.

Headline: ISIS has created ‘more than 40 cells’ in Lebanon
ISIS has established more than 40 undercover cells in Lebanon, according to top secret information obtained by a security body, heightening fears that new terror attacks may be on the horizon. Each cell is believed to comprise three or four people of Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, Jordanian or Iraqi nationality who have been highly trained with guns, explosive belts, land mines and other weapons, a security source said. The cell members, according to the information, have been trained in batches in Syria’s Aleppo and Deir al-Zor and in Lebanon’s West Bekaa, Iqlim al-Kharroub, Akkar and Naameh, reportedly by defected soldiers from the Syrian Army, and Lebanese and Palestinian nationals. The ISIS cells have also apparently been provided with encrypted digital communication devices and pistols with silencers, the information revealed. Most of the members are believed to have been instructed to act normally and fly under the radar of security and intelligence bodies by wearing ordinary clothes and frequenting nightclubs and cafes. Some of the cell members are thought to be carrying fake university IDs.

Headline: US gives Lebanon Hellfire missiles, pledges aircraft
The United States has delivered Hellfire missiles to the Lebanese army and will also provide it with light aircraft including an armed Cessna, the US ambassador to Lebanon said Friday. David Hale, in a statement after meeting Prime Minister Tammam Salam, said the aircraft would be bought with Saudi funds recently pledged to the Lebanese army. “Over the last two weeks, a series of accelerated shipments of American arms and armaments have arrived here,” Hale said. “This week brought the delivery of more Hellfire missiles to the Lebanese Army.” “The Lebanese government and army have requested additional aircraft from the United States: an armed Cessna and other light air support aircraft,” the statement added. “It is our intention to support those requests for additional aircraft, using funds generously made available to Lebanon by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

Headline: Security forces disperse pro-Morsi protests in Cairo, Alexandria
Dozens of protesters supporting ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi gathered on Friday in different cities around Egypt, calling on the government to free all “political detainees” including Morsi, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported. In East Cairo`s Ain Shams district, a strong base for the ousted president, security forces dispersed protesters who gathered shortly after Friday prayers. The supporting protesters chanted slogans against the military and the government. Demonstrators also gathered in Dar El-Salam in south Cairo, where forces fired teargas to disperse them. A security source told Al-Ahram Arabic website that calm had been restored in these areas. In Alexandria, demonstrators gathered to condemn the current government for the rise in prices, chanting ”down with military rule” “Morsi is our legitimate president” and “free our colleagues and brothers.” Weekly demonstrations after Friday prayers have been common since Morsi’s ouster last year. The number of protesters has greatly diminished following a sustained crackdown by police in which thousands of Morsi supporters have been arrested.

Syria Headline: US Bolsters Humanitarian Aid for Syrian Conflict
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, meeting with Turkish officials to push an international coalition to combat the Islamic State militant group, has announced nearly $500 million in new humanitarian aid for Syrians affected by the militants’ siege. The new U.S. funding focuses both on civilians displaced inside Syria and the more than 3 million Syrian refugees in Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt. More than half of Syria’s population has been displaced by conflict. This largest single U.S. humanitarian contribution will go through the United Nations appeal for Syria. It brings the total of U.S. humanitarian assistance to more than $2.9 billion since fighting started in 2011. The new funding comes as part of the Obama administration’s broader push to rally neighboring states to fight Islamic State militants.

Syria Headline: Pro-Assad forces regain control of rebel-held area in Hasakah
The Syrian regime forces regained control of parts of Geweran district in southern Hasakah, northeastern Syria, after clashes with gunmen of Ahrar Geweran, local sources reported. The pro-Assad military forces were reportedly backed by supporters from the National Defence Army (Arab tribal group loyal to President Bashar al-Assad in Hasakah) during the operations against Geweran on Thursday evening, sources told ARA News. Activists based in the city of al-Hasakah confirmed that pro-regime military forces seized control of the al-Sitteen Street and the entrance to al-Beiruti Bridge and al-Basel roundabout in Geweran district. “All parts of southwestern Geweran are captured by pro-Assad forces,” the sources said. Geweran neighbourhood was controlled by gunmen who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) months ago. According to observers, IS militants (who are in control of several areas in the southern countryside of Hasakah) are trying to use Geweran as an entrance to seize the whole city of Hasakah and spread their territories to include the entire northeastern region of Syria, especially after the control of Deir ez-Zor about one month ago. Dozens of fighters were killed during the conflict between pro-Assad forces and Geweran gunmen.

Syria Headline: Civilians and Islamic State ship out of Raqqa ahead of Syria airstrikes
As rebels and Islamic State sign historic ceasefire in Damascus, civilians and IS militants alike evacuate Raqqa fearing US airstrikes. Amid reports that IS is regrouping ahead of expected IS attacks, an alliance of rebel groups bashed out a “non-aggression” with IS pact on Friday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that moderate and Islamist rebels had signed a ceasefire deal for the first time in a suburb of the capital Damascus. “The two parties will respect a truce until a final solution is found, and they promise not to attack each other because they consider the principal enemy” to be Assad’s government and his forces. News site Orient Net published a list of the 11 clauses to the ceasefire agreement, which aims to halt the fierce clashes that have broken out between rebels and IS in and around Damascus over the past 45 days. The site reported that al-Nusra Front – the militant group that on Thursday released 42 UN peacekeepers captured in the Golan Heights, had mediated between the two sides. Charles Lister, an analyst at the Brookings Institute, reported that the alliance on the rebel side was made up of four distinct groups, among them the US-backed Syria Revolutionary Front.

Iraq Headline: What is behind the Islamic State’s decision to reopen banks in Mosul?
Recently, the reinforced doors of the banks in Mosul were reopened. They had been closed since June 10, when the radical jihadi group the Islamic State (IS) took over the city and put public institutions, particularly banks, under heavy guard. “Cash disbursal is limited to current accounts, and does not include the accounts of government departments and public institutions, and the private accounts of persons (natural or legal persons) who are Christian, Yezidi, Shia, or Sunni ‘apostates’,” according to the IS commission’s classifications. “After the members of the commission interviewed me, they told me I was allowed to withdraw only 10 percent of my balance, provided that it would be no more than 10 million dinars.” He added, “When I tried to persuade them that my balance was worth 300 million dinars, one of them said firmly: You are not the only one, these instructions apply to everyone.” Mosul residents who are still hesitant and apprehensive believe that the goal behind reopening the banks is to access details about the deposit accounts, especially since IS has shown great interest in their finances. For this reason, IS might proceed after this step to seize accounts belonging to government institutions and departments, as well as the accounts of “fugitives,” Christians, and others. IS already levies a fee on the funds withdrawn from banks, to the tune of 10 percent of their value. In the context of explaining IS’ recent procedures, we find that the US Foreign Policy Research Institute had said in its latest report that the funds seized by the organization, estimated at $500 million, would not last for a long time, because of the high cost of the conflict IS is fighting on several fronts. Furthermore, an unknown proportion of these funds is being paid to cover the salaries and pensions of government employees. Otherwise, in the event of failing to pay these wages, IS would risk antagonizing the public.

Kurdish Headline: IS Commander Killed in Peshmerga Ambush Near Syrian Border
Kurdish forces have killed the commander of the Islamic State (IS) forces near Rabia in an ambush Thursday evening, said a Peshmerga leader. “We destroyed two IS vehicles and when we checked the corpses we found that one of them was Ammar al-Hassan who was the most prominent IS leader west of the Tigris River,” Qasim Shesho, commander of the Peshmerga forces on Mount Shingal told Rudaw. Shesho said that his forces ambushed the IS convoy at Guhbal town near the Rabia border crossing with Syria. “Al-Hassan is a member of the Jiheshi tribe,” said Shesho. “He was in the Al-Qaeda for many years and later join the IS.” Shesho who also leads new units of Yezidi fighters in the region said that Al-Hassan’s killing “would demoralize the Islamist fighters in the area.” No Peshmerga casualties were reported in the fighting.

Kurdish Headline: Kurdish Delegation from Turkey Discusses Joint Force That Would Include PKK
The formation of a joint Kurdish force to fight Islamic State (IS) militants moved forward, with a meeting in Erbil between Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and Kurdish leaders from Turkey. The visiting delegation included the co-leader of the pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtas, who last week called for a united Kurdish defense force that would include troops from all four parts of Kurdistan – Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Syria. He controversially demanded that Ankara arm the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an insurgent group that has been in conflict with Ankara since 1984, to help confront the threat posed by the Islamic State, the group formerly known as ISIS or ISIL. Demirtas, who was harshly criticized by Turkish officials and media for the suggestion, clarified in a statement Thursday that he meant the force to be formed in Iraqi and Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava), not in Turkey.

Headline: Former U.S. Afghanistan commander to lead effort against Islamic State
President Obama has authorized the Pentagon to target and kill leaders of the Islamic State militant group, with the organization’s head Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi being at the top of the administration’s list. U.S. military officials confirmed to Fox News Thursday that Obama had approved the strikes against individual targets for the first time. The authorization was first reported by the Washington Post. Obama had previously not permitted the military to target individuals from the terrorist organization, also known as ISIS or ISIL, even if intelligence showed where they were located. Haider al-Abadi’s remarks came after talks with Francois Hollande, who was in Baghdad to bolster Iraq’s new government as it struggles to unite the nation amid the rampage by the Islamic State group. “In order to confront Daesh, we need aerial support from our allies,” al-Abadi said, referring to the group by its Arabic acronym. “The French president promised me today that France will participate in this effort, hitting the positions of the terrorists in Iraq.” Al-Abadi spoke at a joint press conference with Hollande in Baghdad. Neither of the two leaders provided details about when the French could join the aerial campaign. Hollande has been one of the most militarily aggressive leaders in modern French history, sending troops to Mali and Central African Republic. France was the first European government to start arming Kurdish authorities against Islamic State militants last month. The French government — which vigorously opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq a decade ago — insists any action be at the request of the Iraqi government. Algeria boasts the largest defence budget in Africa. Over the past decade (2004-2013) its military spending has more than doubled, with an increase of 176 percent, taking total annual spending to $10.4 billion. This makes Algeria the first African nation to tip its defence budget beyond the $10 billion mark. The Algerian government is spending its billions on a broad upgrade of the country’s defence capabilities. Recent purchases and interest have included unmanned drones and self-propelled artillery from China, an amphibious vessel “Kalaat Bani-Abbes” built in Italy, armoured vehicles from Germany to be assembled in a newly-established plant in Algeria, and a range of substantial purchases from Russia, including helicopters and submarines. With a decade of bloody civil war behind it, the concern is that new defence spending indicates an even greater security challenge for Algeria over the coming years. And with Africa’s biggest spender wedged between multiple conflict zones, complex geopolitics could well force Algeria to take a more central role in policing the region.

Morocco has announced the dismantling of a cell involved in recruiting Moroccans to go fight with the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. Friday’s statement by the Interior Ministry said the cell was led by an elementary school teacher and based in the central city of Fez. Seven people were arrested. Police have already dismantled several other recruitment networks over the past few months, most based in Fez. The ministry says there are 1,212 Moroccans fighting with extremist groups in Iraq and Syria, mostly for the Islamic State group. Authorities have expressed fear that Moroccans fighting abroad may return home to carry out terrorist attacks.

On Friday, Secretary of State John Kerry headed to Ankara, Turkey, to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and discuss possible cooperation to fight the Islamic State. So far, 10 states in the Middle East have declared a “shared commitment” to President Obama’s plan to tackle the extremist group. However, despite being a key NATO ally and possessing a strong military, Turkey has refrained from embracing the plan, and reports suggest that it will not allow its air bases to be used for air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. While U.S. officials are said to expect some kind of cooperation, there’s one big factor that helps explain Ankara’s hesitation: The lives of 49 Turkish citizens. In June, Islamic State raided the Turkish consulate in the Iraqi city of Mosul and took 49 people hostage. The safety of these hostages, still held by Islamic State, is of clear concern for Ankara, and the Turkish government is not only weary of provoking the Islamic State but also the families of those being held. Erdoğan has largely kept quiet about the status of negotiations, grimly telling Al Jazeera last month that his hope is for a solution “that would not cause sorrow.” As one unnamed Turkish official told the AFP this week, “Our hands and arms are tied because of the hostages.” Turkey’s entanglement with the Islamic State goes deeper than the hostages, however. Turkey shares a long border with Syria, and some towns in southern Turkey ended up becoming staging grounds for Islamist rebel fighters, including the Islamic State, in the early days of the Syrian war. Ankara tolerated their presence, apparently believing that anything bad for Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime was good for Turkey. They were wrong.

Officials say they received word that members of a militia are threatening to block ports of entry. Starr County has international bridges in Rio Grande City, Roma and Falcon Dam. Officials received word that members of a militia plan to protest illegal crossings by blocking traffic on Sept. 20. Rio Grande City Mayor Ruben Villarreal said members of the group have a right to express their opinion. His is concerned about the group’s intent, though. “What can we expect? I don’t know. The unknown becomes an issue that we really got to prepare for,” Villarreal said. “I’m a 100 percent sure that with the National Guard, with DPS, with Border Patrol and local law enforcement, we’ll communicate and we’ll handle whatever comes,” he said. “The level of communication that exists doesn’t get talked about enough. It’s an extraordinary amount of communication,” Villarreal said. The worst-ever outbreak of Ebola fever has now killed more than 2,400 people and infected twice that number, according to a new toll released on Friday by the World Health Organization. “As of Sept. 12, we are at 4,784 cases and more than 2,400 deaths,” the head of the U.N. health agency, Margaret Chan, told a news conference on the spiraling West African health crisis. “In the three hardest hit countries, the number is moving faster than the capacity to manage them,” she warned, calling for a stronger, faster response from the international community. In Liberia, Chan said there is not a single bed left to treat Ebola patients. Chan did not specify if the latest toll included Nigeria, in addition to Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, the three nations at the epicenter of the epidemic. The WHO’s previous toll on Tuesday reported 2,300 death across the four countries since the start of the year.

He added that the group will comply with state health laws and substitute vinegar for actions involving urine as part of the satanic ceremony. Daniels said that the ceremony will also feature Dakhma of Angra Mainyu deacons and priest who will stomp, spit on and use explicit language on an unconsecrated host, a wafer presented as a form of the resurrected Jesus Christ. A satanic exorcism intended to draw the Holy Spirit from a follower’s body will wrap up the event, an inversion of Roman Catholic exorcism believed to expel the devil from a person. “Our practices have gotten it to about 22 to 25 minutes,” the co-founder said of the length of the ritual. Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, Catholic Archbishop Paul Coakley, and over 80,000 people who have signed an online petition have all condemned the upcoming event. Fallin called the black mass a “disgusting mockery of the Catholic faith,” saying that it should be “equally repellent to Catholics and non-Catholics alike.” “It may be protected by the First Amendment, but that doesn’t mean we can’t condemn it in the strongest terms possible for the moral outrage which it is. Headline: Football team forced to remove Christian crosses from helmets
Football players at Arkansas State University were ordered to either remove a Christian cross decal from their helmets or modify it into a mathematical sign after a Jonesboro attorney complained that the image violated the U.S. Constitution. The cross decal was meant to memorialize former player Markel Owens and former equipment manager Barry Weyer, said athletic director Terry Mohajir. Weyer was killed in a June car crash. Owens was gunned down in Tennessee in January. However, the athletic director said he had no choice but to remove the crosses after he received a message from the university’s legal counsel. “That is a clear violation of the Establishment Clause as a state endorsement of the Christian religion,” Nisenbaum wrote. “Please advise whether you agree and whether ASU will continue this practice.” Ironically, the university’s legal counsel admitted in a letter that there were no specific court cases that addressed crosses on football helmets. Nevertheless, she feared the possibility of a lawsuit. “It is my opinion that we will not prevail on that challenge and must remove the crosses from the helmets or alter the symbols so that they are a (plus sign) instead of a cross,” she wrote in an email to the athletic director.

Leaders of northeastern Nigeria’s Church of the Brethren in Nigeria (EYN) said Boko Haram attacks that have killed more than 300 Christians in the past week have forced the temporary closure of Kulp Bible College and many churches. In an emergency prayer message sent Saturday night (Sept. 6) to Morning Star News among others, EYN President Samuel Dali said the headquarters of the church is under grave threat from the Islamic extremist insurgents who seek to impose sharia (Islamic law) throughout the country. “Boko Haram violence has been getting worse every day, and our members are fleeing the area by the thousands,” he said. “Recent attacks in Borno and Adamawa states where are our churches are located have seen Boko Haram take over the Army base. As a result, about 350 Christians have been killed.” Following a recent online video declaration by Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau that Boko Haram was establishing an Islamic caliphate in Borno state’s Damboa and Gwoza towns and Yobe state’s Buni Yadi, including their surrounding villages, Boko Haram has killed more Christians and burned down more churches, Dali said.

An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale jolted Tanah Datar, a region located around 17 kilometers southeast of Padang Panjang, West Sumatra early on Thursday, said the Disaster Mitigation National agency (BNPB). The quake struck at a depth of 10-km below Singkarak Lake, which is located at the intersection of four districts, Koto, Batipuh and West Padang Panjang and East Padang Panjang. The quake damaged dozens of houses and injured four people in Padang Panjang and Tanah Datar. The injured victims were identified as Ulfaiza Sahra, Tarbaini, Fauril Rozi and Ruli Afandi. The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPD) also evacuated 64 patients from Padang Panjang General Hospital and another 41 patients from Ibnu Sina hospital. According to the BNPB, the quake affected five regencies: Tanah Data, Solok, Bukit Tinggi, Padang Panjang and Padang Pariaman.
