IDF strikes Hamas tunnel workshops after 2 rockets fired toward Israel

The IDF struck Hamas tunnel excavation workshops in the Gaza Strip Monday morning after two rockets were fired toward Israel, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit reported. The rockets landed harmlessly in open areas near Ashdod, and warning sirens were not activated.  Video footage reportedly taken at the scene of one of the IDF strikes in Gaza was published on Palestinian social-media outlets Monday morning. Commanders for Israel’s Security (CIS), a nonpartisan movement of retired IDF generals and their Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), Mossad and Israel Police counterparts, on Monday said the rocket launches “make it clear that as long as Israel continues to leave the initiative in the hands of Hamas and other terrorist elements in the Gaza Strip, we will continue to see provocations from these elements… for some time toward Israel.”

Jordan condemns Israel’s approval of new settler homes in West Bank

The Israeli government on Sunday approved plans to build 780 new homes in Judea and Samaria, drawing criticism from the European Union, according to Reuters. One hundred of the units will be built in Tal Menashe, a settlement in northern Samaria that was home to Esther Horgen, a 52-year-old mother of six killed on Dec. 21 by a Palestinian terrorist while she was jogging in the forest near her house. More than 200 units will be built in Nofei Nehemia/Rehelim as well as approximately 400 units in Beit El, Evyatar, Shavei Shomron, Oranit, the Barkan Industrial Zone, Karnei Shomron and Givat Ze’ev. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the order for the construction on Jan. 11.

Egypt, Jordan intelligence chiefs meet Abbas in Ramallah

On the eve of the inauguration of US President-elect Joe Biden, the heads of the Egyptian and Jordanian intelligence services on Sunday visited Ramallah, where they met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Ahmed Husni, head of the Jordanian General Intelligence Directorate, and Abbas Kamel, head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service, arrived unexpectedly in Ramallah at the head of delegations from their countries. Majed Faraj, head of the PA General Intelligence Service, attended the meeting. It came two days after Abbas announced new general elections for the PA presidency, parliament and the PLO’s Palestinian National Council. The visit of the two intelligence chiefs was within the context of ongoing coordination between the Palestinians and the two Arab countries in preparation for engaging the Biden administration, a PA official in Ramallah said. “We have decided to resume our contacts with the US administration,” the official said. “We are optimistic about the new US administration. We are in full coordination with our Arab brothers.”

Iran announces ‘Axis of Resistance Defense Treaty’

The Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran announced on Monday that it will work on preparing a draft resolution on the “defense and security treaty for the axis of resistance”, with the aim of collectively responding to any attack by NATO members and Israel. The deputy in the Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly, Abu Fadl Abu Trabi, revealed the preparation of a draft resolution entitled “Defense and Security Treaty of the Axis of Resistance”. Abu Trabi indicated, in a statement carried by Iran’s Fars News Agency, that work is underway with the aim of collecting the necessary signatures to put the draft resolution up for discussion and voting. Abu Trabi noted that based on the text of the draft Defense Security Treaty for the Axis of Resistance, “when Israel attacks one of the Resistance Front countries or if Israel takes any action against this axis, the other member states of the group must exercise all its efforts from the military, economic and political aspects to completely ward off the danger.” According to the agency, the draft resolution stipulates only one article, which is: “All countries are with the liberation movements that are members of this treaty.”

Sudan demands Ethiopia withdraw its forces from ‘occupied territories’ and halt military buildup

On Sunday evening, the Sudanese Security and Defense Council appealed to Ethiopia to “withdraw its forces from the remaining positions it still occupies in Maraghad, Khor Hamar and Ghatar as soon as possible in compliance with international treaties and the sustainability of good-neighborly relations.” The Sudanese Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Yassin Ibrahim Yassin, stated that “the council was informed of the developments on the eastern borders,” saying that “despite the military mobilization and build-up carried out by Ethiopia in the areas facing our forces in Al-Fashaqa, we confirm that our forces will remain in their lands in order to preserve sovereignty stipulated in the charters and agreements that affirm Sudan’s entitlement,” the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) reported. During his meeting with Tut Qalwak, advisor to the President of Southern Sudan, Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok announced Khartoum’s approval of Juba’s mediation to resolve the border dispute with Ethiopia, which has worsened in recent weeks between Sudan and Ethiopia.

Tunisia arrests dozens as protests break out for second night

Tunisia arrests over 600, deploys troops after riots

Riots and violent clashes between Tunisian police and protesters broke out on Sunday in the capital Tunis and several other cities for the second consecutive day, while security forces arrested dozens of young people. The disturbances came as the country faced an unprecedented economic crisis and a nationwide lockdown imposed since Thursday as part of efforts to rein in surging coronavirus infections. Internal Security Forces spokesman Walid Hkima said riot police had arrested 242 people, mostly teenagers and children who vandalised property and tried to rob shops and banks overnight and during the day on Sunday in several cities. The protesters made no clear demands in demonstrations – which authorities described as riots – in at least 10 cities around the country. In the run-down Ettadamen area of the capital, protesters – most of them teenagers – blocked roads and threw stones at police. Police fired water cannon and tear gas to disperse them on Sunday. Clashes also spread to the Mnihla area of Tunis. The protests pose a challenge for the government of Hicham Mechichi, who has reshuffled his cabinet amid a continuing battle for political influence. Rural central and southern regions of the country remain flashpoints for rioting. Witnesses told the Reuters news agency that protests were held on Sunday in the central towns of Sbeitla and Kasserine, where police chased the protesters and fired tear gas.

Armed protesters have arrived at multiple state capitol complexes across the country Sunday morning. This follows a special bulletin from the FBI last week that warned: “armed protests” were being planned at 50 state capitols and the US Capitol in Washington, DC, ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20. While the protesters are being identified across various platforms as members of a so-called “boogaloo” movement, they largely appear to be generic anti-government anarchists – some of whom call themselves “liberty boys,” and others who oppose the conservative Proud Boys. However, as Reuters reports, only small gatherings of demonstrators had taken to the streets alongside much larger crowds of law-enforcement officers and media personnel.  Some local news agencies flipped the narrative, proclaiming that the lack of turnout of “domestic terrorists” was due to the outsize presence of National Guardsmen nationwide. So who could blame Americans for not trusting the media or the government? While the January 6, 2021 incident at the U.S. Capitol was widely covered in news media, the type of language used to describe it varied greatly from publication to publication. The influence of news media on how the public perceives events is undeniable. In fact, 88% of surveyed Americans consider the news an essential tool to keep informed about public affairs. From a riot caused by rioters to an insurrection by President Trump’s militant supporters, the way different media outlets analyze the U.S. Capitol incident impacts what their respective audiences take away from it.

Guatemala forces stall migrant caravan with tear gas, batons

Migrant caravan demands Biden administration ‘honors its commitments’

Guatemalan soldiers and police had blocked part of a caravan of as many as 9,000 Honduran migrants Saturday night at a point not far from where they entered the country, seeking to reach the U.S. border. Guatemalan police and soldiers launched tear gas and wielded batons and shields against a group of Honduran migrants that tried to push through their roadblock early Sunday. A group of about 2,000 migrants had stopped short of the roadblock the night before. The roadblock was strategically placed at a chokepoint on the two-lane highway to Chiquimula in an area known as Vado Hondo.  Some 100 migrants tried to make their way through authorities around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The security forces beat them back and deployed tear gas. None made it through and the larger remaining contingent kept its distance during the melee. Some migrants were visibly injured by baton strikes. One man, who did not give his name, leaned against a wall near police with a bandage atop his head. “We want to start a dialogue with you, to ask you to accept some of the needs of the Guatemalan people right now,” Rodriguez said, in apparent reference to President Alejandro Giammattei’s refusal to allow caravans through out of fear they could spread COVID-19. Governments throughout the region have made it clear they will not let the caravan through.

We crossed a line that should have never been crossed when we sent “stimulus payments” directly to the American people during the very early stages of the COVID pandemic.  Even many Republicans that supported the measure acknowledged that what they were doing was pure socialism, but they defended the payments by insisting that we were in the middle of a major national emergency.  At the time, I warned that once the government started issuing such checks, the American people would always keep demanding more.  Sadly, we have now reached that point. And this comes at a time when tens of millions of Americans are in desperate need because the real economy continues to implode all around us.
***As more and more stimulus payments are forthcoming, because the economy is collapsing due to “Covid”, the American people will become dependent on a “universal income”.  From there it will be a short hop to centralized bank digital currencies- in order “for everyone to get their money quickly and securely.”

California’s top epidemiologist has asked providers to stop giving shots from a batch of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine as the state investigates reports of allergic reactions. California state epidemiologist Dr. Erica S. Pan issued a statement Sunday recommending providers pause the administration of lot 41L20A of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine due to possible allergic reactions that are being investigated. “Our goal is to provide the COVID vaccine safely, swiftly and equitably,” Pan said in a statement. “A higher-than-usual number of possible allergic reactions were reported with a specific lot of Moderna vaccine administered at one community vaccination clinic.” The clinic is located in San Diego, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, and fewer than 10 people required medical attention. More than 33,000 doses from this lot were provided to 287 providers across the state. The shipments arrived in California between Jan. 5 and 12, according to the California Department of Public Health. “Out of an extreme abundance of caution and also recognizing the extremely limited supply of vaccine, we are recommending that providers use other available vaccine inventory and pause the administration of vaccines from Moderna Lot 041L20A until the investigation by the CDC, FDA, Moderna and the state is complete. We will provide an update as we learn more,” Pan said in the statement.

New Covid-19 variant detected in Germany

A new strain of the coronavirus – different from the highly contagious UK variant – has appeared in California, where the total number of cases approaches 3 million, according to a report. The state’s Department of Public Health said it’s unclear whether the variant, which has popped up in a dozen counties, is highly contagious or is just being identified more frequently as lab work becomes increasingly sophisticated, the LA Times reported. Researchers have linked the strain to several large outbreaks in Santa Clara County, according to the newspaper. “This virus continues to mutate and adapt, and we cannot let down our guard,” Dr. Sara Cody, Santa Clara County health officer and director of the Public Health Department, said in a statement. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines train the immune system to target the spike protein — which means that, theoretically, the mutations could alter the spike protein in a way that decreases the jabs’ effectiveness, according to the LA Times.

Tropical Cyclone “Kimi” to make landfall over Queensland, Australia

Tropical Cyclone “Kimi” formed at 02:10 UTC on January 17, 2021, as the 3^rd named storm of the 2020/21 Australian region cyclone season. Kimi is moving slowly south of the north tropical Queensland coast and is expected to turn southwest tonight (LT) and cross the north tropical coast on Monday, January 18 (LT). At 05:00 UTC on January 17, Kimi was located about 135 km (84 miles) E of Cooktown and 175 km (84 miles) NNE of Cairns. Maximum sustained winds near the center were 75 km/h (45 mph) with wind gusts to 100 km/h (62 mph). The storm was moving south at 9 km/h (6 mph). “Kimi has been moving slowly south through today, but is expected to turn more to the southwest tonight (LT) and cross the north tropical coast on Monday, January 18 (LT),” BOM said. “There remains considerable uncertainty with the crossing time and location. The system may intensify further over the next 24 hours and may reach category 2 before crossing.”

A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2021 BO flew past Earth at 0.06 LD / 0.00016 AU (23 935 km / 14 900 miles) at 08:19 UTC on January 18, 2021. On the same day, at 01:16 UTC, another asteroid — designated 2021 BK — flew past us at a distance of 0.59 LD (0.00151 AU). 2021 BO is the 5^th known asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and the 23^rd closest flyby on record. The object belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 0.69 and 1.5 m (2.3 – 4.9 feet). It was first observed at Mt. Lemmon Survey on January 17, one day before its close approach.

Trump’s Final Pro-Israel Act? Include Israel in Powerful Mideast Central Command

Regional ramifications as Trump seeks to include Israel in CENTCOM

In one of his final acts as his term in office comes to an end, President Donald Trump ordered that Israel be included in CENTCOM, the major U.S. military command for the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. The expansion of the U.S. Central Command to include Israel is a last-minute reorganization that pro-Israel advocates have been pushing for in order to encourage strategic cooperation against Iran, American officials told the paper. For decades Israel had been part of the U.S. military’s European Command, mostly due to the historical friction between Israel and the Arab countries who are also American allies in the region that CENTCOM covers. That changed when the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain signed peace agreements with Israel, followed by Sudan and Morocco. CENTCOM maintains major U.S. military bases in both the UAE and Bahrain. There is a potential issue on the horizon. If Israel is in CENTCOM and Israel is accused of airstrikes in Syria or Iraq it will also reflect more on CENTCOM than on EUCOM in Europe. The plausible deniability for Israel’s alleged strikes in Syria or Iraq in the past has worked in CENTCOM’s favor. CENTCOM was concerned that Iranian-backed forces might target the US if they viewed the US as complicit in the airstrikes. Media in Iraq fed this rumor, claiming that the US had carried out various airstrikes. The US denied they had a role.

ECB’s Lagarde Calls For Global Regulation Of “Reprehensible” Bitcoin

President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde has called for global regulations on Bitcoin, labeling the cryptocurrency “reprehensible.” Lagarde made the comments during a Reuters Next conference earlier today, during which she asserted that Bitcoin was not a currency. “(Bitcoin) has conducted some funny business and some interesting and totally reprehensible money laundering activity,” said Lagarde. The ECB head went on to call for Bitcoin to be regulated by financial authorities. “There has to be regulation. This has to be applied and agreed upon […] at a global level because if there is an escape that escape will be used,” she said. Globalists and technocrats have long begrudged Bitcoin because it is decentralized and therefore impossible to come under the control of centralized financial institutions. The cryptocurrency has also provided a refuge for dissidents who have been deplatformed by regular financial services and institutions over their politics.

Tech coalition working to create digital COVID-19 vaccination passport

A coalition of health and technology organizations are working to develop a digital COVID-19 vaccination passport to allow businesses, airlines and countries to check if people have received the vaccine. The Vaccination Credential Initiative, announced on Thursday, is formulating technology to confirm vaccinations in the likelihood that some governments will mandate people provide proof of their shots in order to enter the nation. The organization hopes the technology will allow people to “demonstrate their health status to safely return to travel, work, school and life while protecting their data privacy.” The initiative, which includes members like Microsoft, Oracle and U.S. nonprofit Mayo Clinic, is using the work from member Commons Project’s international digital document that verifies a person has tested negative for COVID-19, the Financial Times reported.  The Commons Project’s technology, created in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation, is being utilized by three major airline alliances. The coalition is reportedly in discussions with several governments to create a program requiring either negative tests or proof of vaccination to enter, Paul Meyer, the chief executive of The Commons Project, told the Times.

Three dead, 24 injured after strong quake in Indonesia’s Sulawesi

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island killed at least seven people, injured hundreds and damaged many buildings on Friday, the country’s disaster mitigation agency said, as panicked residents fled to safer areas. The epicenter of the quake was six kilometers (3.73 miles) northeast of Majene city at a depth of 10 kilometers. Initial information from the country’s disaster mitigation agency showed that four people had died and 637 others were injured in Majene, while there were three more fatalities and two dozen injured in the neighboring area of Mamuju.

Ta Kwu Ling recorded 0.9 °C (33.6 °F) — its lowest temperature since 1988 when records there began. Farmers in Sheung Shui reported large scale damages as the frost covered many crops. Hong Kong Observatory said a phenomenon called radiative cooling is behind the piercing cold.

Palestinian and Israeli forces trade attacks in southern Gaza

On Wednesday, the borders of the Gaza Strip witnessed a round of mutual bombardment between the Israeli army and the Palestinian forces. The Israeli army spokesman, Avichay Adraee, said via his Twitter account that an Israeli tank had bombed two Hamas sites, in response to a double-fire attack on an engineering vehicle belonging to it from the Gaza Strip. Adraee said the Israeli vehicle was carrying out a leveling operation at the western end of the security fence at the southern end of the Gaza Strip. The spokesman stated that the cause of the attack resulted in material damage, without causing any casualties.

Jordan, Egypt could join Quartet’s Mideast peace drive

 Jordan and Egypt are emerging as potential new members of the international Quartet for Mideast peace after the foreign ministers of both countries joined a meeting of the multilateral forum in Cairo on Monday. The Quartet consisting of the UN, the EU, the US and Russia was set up in 2002 to help mediate Middle East peace negotiations. Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki were invited by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to attend the meeting, which included French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, according to a statement by Jordan’s Foreign Ministry. Oraib Rantawi, director of the Al-Quds Center for Political Studies, told Arab News that the idea of adding Jordan and Egypt to the Quartet had been discussed by the Obama-Biden administration. “Although the issue was discussed in the last days of the Obama administration, I don’t think that it will be decided until the Biden administration takes over and begins to make its position public,” he said. Rantawi said that Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the UAE also may be invited to participate.

Large Soleimani Statue Erected In Beirut Stirs Outrage, Divides Lebanese

A newly erected large bronze statue of slain Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in the middle of the Lebanese capital Beirut is driving outrage and division, causing deepening rifts in the population over the role of Hezbollah and Iranian influence in the country. In the days following the unveiling ceremony the statue created a social media storm of controversy. Many Lebanese, mostly critics of Hezbollah, took to social media to lambast the celebration of a foreign military leader in Lebanon’s capital. Much criticism has naturally centered on the fact that the Soleimani statue represents the presence and influence of a foreign power on Lebanese soil. However the small Mediterranean country has long been subject of foreign meddling in recent history, including the Saudis, Syrians, Israel, and the US – not to mention the French Mandate period in the 20th century. Soleimani’s face has become iconic throughout the Middle East, representing “resistance” to US and Israeli designs on the region.

Israeli airstrikes near Syria-Iraq border targeted Iranian weapons

Alleged Israeli airstrikes targeted dozens of sites in the Deir Ezzor region of eastern Syria and in Albukamal near the Syria-Iraq border on Tuesday night. The strikes targeted dozens of warehouses and sites belonging to pro-Iranian militias and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) throughout the area, according to local news source Deir Ezzor 24. The Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Mayadeen news cited a security source in Baghad who stated that no casualties were caused as the sites that were targeted were evacuated beforehand, but reported as well that ambulances rushed to the scene to transport people who were wounded in the strikes. Regional media described the strikes as some of the largest and most intense strikes in eastern Syria in recent years. Images from the area showed a number of buildings completely destroyed after the strikes. According to the Step News Agency, strikes by unidentified aircraft, believed to be affiliated with the international coalition, targeted sites belonging to the IRGC in Albukamal as well on Tuesday. This is the third alleged Israeli airstrike reported in Syria in the past three weeks.

Mysterious Aircraft Pound Turkish Oil Smugglers in Syria. US Supply Convoys Are Blown Up in Iraq

On January 8, ISIS terrorists launched a large attack on government forces in the eastern countryside of Hama. After a series of clashes with the Syrian Army and pro-government militias, terrorists captured a number of positions near the towns of Rahjan and al-Shakusiyah. As of January 12, ISIS cells retreated from these positions under pressure from the army. Nonetheless, at least 19 government troops and 12 ISIS members were killed in the clashes. Meanwhile in the eastern countryside of Homs, ISIS cells destroyed a pickup of the al-Quds Brigade, a Palestinian pro-government group, with an improvised explosive device. These developments coincided with some strikes by some ‘mysterious aircraft’ that once again bombed Turkish-linked oil smugglers in northern Aleppo. This time the infrastructure of the smugglers was destroyed near the village of Tarhin. The situation in neighboring Iraq is also not stable. Just on January 9, 3 supply convoys of the US-led coalition became targets of IED attacks in the central and southern regions of the country.

Iran is the “new home base” of al-Qaeda, says Pompeo

Iran has given a new operational headquarters to al-Qaeda, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday. He added that the Islamic Republic is “the new home base” for the terror group. “Tehran gives sanctuary to the terror group’s senior leaders as they plan attacks against America and our allies,” Pompeo added. He noted that since 2015, “Tehran has allowed al-Qaida figures in the country to freely communicate with other al-Qaeda members and perform many functions that were previously directed from Afghanistan and Pakistan, including authorization for attacks, propaganda, and fundraising.” Pompeo went on to say that the Iran-al-Qaeda axis poses a grave threat to the security of nations and to the American homeland itself. The outgoing secretary of state announced that the administration is designating two Iran-based al-Qaeda leaders, Muhammad Abbatay and Sultan Yusuf Hasan al-‘Arif as Specially Designated Global Terrorists.

C.African Rebels Repelled In Closest Attack Yet To Capital

Rebel forces in the Central African Republic on Wednesday mounted their closest attack yet to the capital Bangui before being pushed back with the loss of a peacekeeper, the United Nations said. The UN’s MINUSCA peacekeeping mission said Wednesday’s attack was “repelled by Blue Helmets together with the Central African forces”, adding that a Rwandan peacekeeper was killed. The UN force’s spokesman Abdoulaziz Fall said the attack occurred at a MINUSCA position 12 kilometres (seven miles) from the centre of Bangui. “Several rebels were captured, and more than 10 were killed,” he told AFP. Earlier, Interior Minister Henri Wanzet Linguissara said armed groups opposed to President Faustin Archange Touadera carried out two simultaneous raids on Bangui’s outskirts at dawn. Up until Wednesday, the rebels had carried out sporadic attacks in towns far from the capital and on the RN3 highway, the crucial supply line linking Bangui with neighbouring Cameroon. Some analysts suggested the latest assaults could point to a change in tactics. “What the rebels have understood is that the international community gauges the crisis in CAR on what happens in Bangui,” Roland Marchal, a specialist at the Centre for International Research at Paris’s Sciences-Po university, told AFP. “This is why they are carrying out attacks on the immediate outskirts of Bangui — not to take Bangui, which is strongly defended, but to demonstrate that Touadera no longer controls anything, or only very little.”

Digital Euro Could Happen ‘Within Five Years’: Lagarde

A digital euro should be a reality within five years, European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde said Wednesday. “It’s going to take a good chunk of time to make sure it’s safe,” Lagarde told an online forum organised by Reuters, adding “I would hope that it’s no more than five (years).” “There is a demand” for a digital currency, she added, but that there is a “need to have a system that is secure” and where risks such as hacking are addressed. “We’re moving on, we are not charging on.” Lagarde set a similar timeframe to China which launched a pilot scheme in 2020 and is edging closer to launching the world’s first sovereign digital currency. The comments came as the ECB concluded a consultation on the digital currency, which registered more than 8,000 respondents, according to the Frankfurt-based bank. A digital euro would be an electronic form of central-bank money, which proponents say will allow for faster and cheaper payments as they cut out the administration and the high costs needed in traditional banking.

Claim: 750 Christians Massacred By Ethiopian Forces At Major Church In Tigray

Because of the remote location and practical media blackout enforced by the government, information has only emerged in small amounts about the ongoing Tigrayan conflict in Ethiopia and Eritrea. So far thousands have died and millions have been displaced. Now according to Eritrea Hub, a claim has emerged that 750 Christians were massacred by government troops at St. Mary of Zion Church, one of the major churches for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. On Tuesday, 15^th of December, Ethiopian federal troops and Amhara militia approached the Mariam of Zion cathedral in the Tigrayan city of Aksum. It is possible that they thought that Tigrayan troops were sheltering in the church – taking advantage of the ancient right of sanctuary. According to a number of sources the church was full, with some saying that up to 1,000 people were in the building or the compound surrounding it. The advancing soldiers caused consternation: a chapel in the compound is believed by Ethiopians to house the biblical Ark of the Covenant. A confrontation ensued. Everyone in the compound was forced into the square outside the cathedral. As the crowd milled around, there was further shouting and the troops opened fire on the protesting crowd. As many as 750 people are reported to have been killed. News of the massacre has only gradually reached the outside world. People walked over 200 kilometres to the regional capital, Mekelle, and from there the story gradually filtered out – despite the clamp-down on the media in Tigray.

Anyone flying to the U.S. will soon need to show proof of a negative test for COVID-19, health officials announced Tuesday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requirement expands on a similar one announced late last month for passengers coming from the United Kingdom. The new order takes effect in two weeks. The CDC order applies to U.S. citizens as well as foreign travelers. The new restrictions require air passengers to get a COVID-19 test within three days of their flight to the U.S., and to provide written proof of the test result to the airline. Travelers can also provide documentation that they had the infection in the past and recovered. Airlines are ordered to stop passengers from boarding if they don’t have proof of a negative test. Meanwhile, an English police force is using license plate recognition technology to monitor drivers and make sure they are only making “essential” journeys during the third coronavirus lockdown.

A bright fireball exploded over Norway at 23:21 UTC on January 4, 2021 (00:21 LT, January 5), producing a loud bang that was heard by many people, particularly those in Ullensaker. Norwegian Seismic Array (NORSAR) said ground impact was recorded at 23:24 UTC, 15 to 20 km (9 – 12.4 miles) S of their measuring station at Løten. On Tuesday, residents in Norway reported a bright fireball with a loud bang as the object entered the atmosphere. The sound was heard by people in the municipality of Ullensaker. According to the Norwegian meteor network, the object traveled at a speed of 50 000 km/h (31 000 mph). The meteor penetrated very far into the atmosphere and gave a fairly powerful bang, an indicator that meteorites have fallen to the ground, said Steinar Midtskogen with the meteor network. “The signal came from a southern direction and coincides with reports of sound heard by people in Ullensaker municipality,” NORSAR wrote in a press release.

Alleged Israeli airstrike reported in southern Syria

An alleged Israeli airstrike targeted locations in southern Syria as explosions were heard in the skies over Damascus on Wednesday night, according to Syrian state media SANA. The strikes were launched from the Golan Heights, a Syrian military source told SANA, claiming that most of the incoming missiles were intercepted by Syrian air defenses. Footage on Syrian state television reportedly showed a multi-story building on fire due to the strike. The opposition-affiliated Halab Today TV reported that more than five strikes targeted sites near the First Division of the Syrian military in the Al-Kiswah area, south of Damascus. The Syrian Step News Agency reported that the strikes also targeted Iranian militia sites in Al-Dimass, located west of Damascus near the Lebanese-Syrian border, and Sahnaya, located south of Damascus. This is the third alleged Israeli airstrike reported in Syria in the past two weeks.

Palestinians, Jordan accuse Israel of ‘Judaizing’ Western Wall Plaza

The Palestinians and Jordan have accused Israel of seeking to “Judaize” the Western Wall Plaza because of renovation work that is being carried out there. Referring to the renovations as “excavations,” the Palestinians and Jordan called for an immediate cessation of the work at the site. The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the United Nations Security Council to “halt the crimes of the Israeli occupation forces against al-Aqsa Mosque.” Jordan, meanwhile, called on Israel to immediately stop the “ongoing excavations and abide by its obligations as an occupying power in occupied east Jerusalem, and to stop violating or changing the identity of the Old City.”

Netanyahu Orders New Israeli Settlement In West Bank

Israel’s prime minister on Monday directed authorities to approve construction of 800 new homes for Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank, days before US President Donald Trump’s strongly pro-Israel administration departs office. The move also comes as internal political jockeying intensifies ahead of the Jewish state’s own election, its fourth in two years, following the collapse of a fractious coalition between right-wing premier Benjamin Netanyahu and his centrist Defence Minister Benny Gantz. The settlement announcement came a day after Gantz opposed plans to legalise under Israeli law a series of settlement outposts, which, given his control of the defence portfolio, in effect takes this proposal — one that has strong appeal for right-wing voters — off the table. Settler leaders meanwhile accused Gantz of intending to push ahead with retrospectively legalising under Israeli law Palestinian construction in Israeli-controlled parts of the West Bank.

The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs said in a statement to the Yemeni News Agency Saba, that after six years of war and the imposition of numerous sanctions against individuals, the government believed that efforts to intensify all political and legal pressures on the Houthis should continue in order to create reach a political solution to the conflict.

One policeman killed, dozens injured in southern Iraq clashes

Protests against Iraqi govt continue for 4th consecutive day

A policeman was killed and dozens of people injured Sunday in clashes between security forces and anti-government protesters in southern Iraq, multiple security officials said. They said the clashes erupted in Haboubi square in the town of Nasiriyah in violence that began over the arrest of activists in the province. Security forces used tear gas and batons in effort to disperse the protesters who threw stones and rocks at security forces. Occasional gunfire could be heard.
It was not immediately clear how the policeman was killed amid conflicting reports. The officials said at least 18 protesters were injured and more than 40 among the security forces.

Meanwhile, The spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, Abul Fadl Amoui, announced that his country is working on designing a nuclear reactor similar to the Arak heavy water reactor. “During today’s meeting of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, they discussed how to implement the Strategic Procedure Law to abolish the embargo and protect the rights of the people,” Amoui said in an interview with the Fars News Agency. On Sunday, Iran revealed that it would increase its uranium enrichment, unless the United States ended its economic blockade and sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Armenian Leader Says Karabakh Conflict Unresolved

President Vladimir Putin hosted the heads of the two former Soviet states for a rare trilateral meeting and urged them to negotiate further steps in a November peace agreement that ended weeks of fierce clashes over disputed Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh was still not resolved as he met the leader of his country’s arch foe Azerbaijan in Moscow on Monday. But Pashinyan insisted Monday that key issues surrounding the conflict were in limbo and needed to be resolved immediately. Pashinyan said several issues remained unresolved including the question of the future status of Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian enclave recognised internationally as part of Azerbaijan. The three leaders issued a joint statement on the Kremlin website announcing the creation of a trilateral working group to oversee the “unblocking of all economic and transport links” in the region. The group will be jointly chaired by deputy prime ministers from the three countries and will hold its first meeting before January 30, the statement said.

Kim Jong-un pledges to expand North Korea’s nuclear arsenal

In his latest address to the Workers’ Party – only the eighth congress in its history – Mr Kim said Pyongyang did not intend to use its nuclear weapons unless “hostile forces” were planning to use them against North Korea first. Addressing a rare congress of his ruling Workers’ Party, Mr Kim also pledged to expand North Korea’s nuclear weapons arsenal and military potential. He said that plans for a nuclear submarine were almost complete. He said the US was his country’s “biggest obstacle for our revolution and our biggest enemy… no matter who is in power, the true nature of its policy against North Korea will never change,” state news agency KCNA reported. His speech outlined a list of desired weapons including long-range ballistic missiles capable of being launched from land or sea and “super-large warheads”. North Korea has managed to significantly advance its arsenal despite being subject to strict economic sanctions.

China Threatens ‘Counterstrike’ Over US Contact With Taiwan

China on Monday threatened a “counterstrike” against a move by the United States to lift restrictions on official contacts with Taiwan as military tensions grow between Beijing and the self-ruled island. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Saturday Washington would lift “complex internal restrictions” on contacts with Taipei by diplomats, after a year of mounting US-Chinese friction on topics including human rights, trade and the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic. Beijing says Taiwan is an inviolable part of China to be reclaimed, by force if necessary, and opposes any diplomatic recognition of the democratic island. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Beijing “strongly condemns” the move and accused the United States of violating the terms of Washington’s diplomatic relations with Beijing. “Any action that harms China’s core interests will receive a resolute counterstrike from China,” Zhao warned, urging Pompeo to retract the decision or face “severe punishment”.

Prices will likely climb further, the UN’s Food & Agriculture Organization said. The spike threatens to push up broader inflation, making it harder for central banks to provide more stimulus to shore up economies, while stirring memories of food-price crises a decade ago. It’s bad news for consumers whose incomes have been hurt by the Covid-19 crisis, and adds to concerns about global food security that’s being affected by conflicts and weather shocks. The FAO’s food price index has risen for the past seven months, with annual prices capping the highest average in three years. Still, costs remain well below peaks in 2008 and 2011, when soaring prices caused political and economic instability around the world and grain-export bans tightened supply.

Without Freedom Of Speech, What Is Going To Happen To America?

It is quite ironic that many of those that are always telling us that we need “diversity” in our society are also some of the strongest voices against a “diversity of viewpoints” on social media.  The founders of this nation wanted to make sure that nobody would ever take the right to freedom of speech away from us, and that is why it was enshrined in the Bill of Rights.  Unfortunately, courts have greatly eroded that right over the last several decades, and now we are facing an all-out assault on freedom of speech that is unlike anything that we have ever seen before.  And once freedom of speech is completely gone, all of our other rights will soon follow, because there will no longer be any way to defend them. Needless to say, if we stay on the path that we are currently on there is no future for America. Without free speech, the system of government that our founders established simply won’t work. What is the point of even having elections if we can only express one point of view? In China, no dissent is allowed and one political party runs everything on a permanent basis. America appears to be heading in the same direction, and there are millions of people in this country that are actually quite thrilled that this is happening.

Hundreds of families have been displaced after an EF-1 tornado swept through Texas City at 18:13 CST on January 6, 2021 (00:13 UTC, January 7). Residents described the storm as ‘quick and horrifying.’ The National Weather Service (NWS) Houston placed the tornado on the higher end of EF-1 rating with maximum sustained wind speeds likely around 175 km/h (110 mph). This is still preliminary data and subject to change pending final review. The tornado was on the ground for about 1 minute, it had a path of 1.1 km (0.7 miles) and a maximum path width of 45 m (50 yards). “The most significant damage was to a convenience store near that intersection and the adjacent Tradewinds Apartments complex,” NWS meteorologist Dan Reilly noted. A clear relatively narrow path was seen in the severe damage. Although most debris was pushed toward the east dirt and insulation was found splattered on all sides of many structures including the east downwind side. Damage at a business on 6^th street north was also surveyed.

A powerful winter storm is affecting Japan since Thursday, January 7, 2021, dropping record-breaking snow, stranding more than 1 200 vehicles, and claiming the lives of at least 10 people in snow-related incidents on January 9 and 10. Heavy snowfall fell across wide areas of the country, forcing some prefectures to request the Ground Self-Defense Force’s help in rescue operations. Hokuriku region received a record amount of snowfall on Friday, January 8, some of it falling in a matter of hours. In 3 hours, parts of Hokuriku registered at least 15 cm (5.9 inches) of snow. In just 12 hours, Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, received 59 cm (1.9 feet), Toyama 48 cm (1.5 feet) — the highest ever for the capital of the prefecture. As of 09:00 LT on January 8, the snow cover in Himi was 6 times more than in an average year and 5.5 times more in Asahi, The Asahi Shimbun reported. Meanwhile, A cold snap has gripped South Korea, bringing more than 0.3 m (1 foot) of snow and prompting a cold warning in Seoul for the first time in 57 years on Thursday. More than 0.3 m (1 foot) of snow fell in many areas, including mountainous regions on Jeju.

‎On September ‎2017, I  put on a prophecy seminar at Trinity Nazarene Church in Lompoc Ca.  In that seminar I showed my video on the coming Third Jewish Temple Jesus Christ warned us about. If you do not know what our Lord prophesied about this Third Temple here are four places in the bible that address this coming Temple.  

“And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:  and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate” (Daniel 9:27).  Just so you know, the sacrifices and oblation are done in the Temple.  Jesus refers to the Daniel prophecy below.

“When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand)” (Matthew 24:15).

“Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4).

“And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.² But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months” (Revelation 11:1-2). 

In my prophecy seminar in 2017, I warned the people at Trinity that there would be coming  a lot of talk about building the Third Temple in the near future.  Since that seminar this last days prophecy about the coming Third Temple has sped up. The talk about building the Temple sped up so much I had to up-date the information on the coming Third Temple. On Mar 7, 2019 I posted my video on the coming Temple to my YouTube channel.  Since March of 2019, there have been even more signs we are getting very close to witnessing Israel building that Third Temple.  If you are new to this prophecy I suggest you watch my 2019, video below and my video on the signing of the Abraham According between Israel and the UAE.  Daniel talked about a covenant between Israel and many people which are the Islamic people. Since the signing of that new Abraham Accord one Islamic nation another are making peace with Israel!  Anyone who understand bible prophecy understands how huge these end times signs are.  Before you watch those videos below here are some new reports showing us the signs that things are changing over the Temple Mount issue.  Keep in mind for years the Arabs have been keeping the Jews from going up to the Temple Mount area where the first and second Temple once sound.  However, as I have been warning for years the Jews are now starting to make there way up that that Temple Mount area. 

“A new Member of Knesset, a resident of the Golan, firmly established his political path with a powerful act of faith by praying on the Temple Mount. Likud won 36 seats In the last elections but recent infighting led to longtime Likudnik Gideon Sa’ar breaking away to form his own party. Rather than weaken the party, the move allowed new and enthusiastic members to step into the breach.  Nissim Vaturi, as the 40th candidate on the Likud list, stepped up, representing a unique and necessary voice in the government. Sworn in two weeks ago, Vaturi made a bold declaration of his intentions by ascending to the Temple Mount on Sunday and praying.  “On the merit of this act, may we merit full Redemption and may we merit redeeming this place for the Shechina (holy presence) to dwell, and to build the Holy Temple quickly and in our days.”

NOT THE ONLY ONE

Vaturi is the second Likud Knesset member to not only enter the Temple Mount, but to call for the construction of the third Temple this month. Earlier in December, Israel365News reported that fellow Likud parliamentarian Amit Halevi lit Chanukah candles on Tuesday outside of the Temple Mount and said that step-by-step, Israel is getting closer to the Temple.  Vaturi then recited the ‘Shehecheyanu” blessing which is recited upon auspicious and joyous occasions. “It is the right of every Jew to be able to go anywhere in the Holy Land, especially in the Holy city of Jerusalem, this place where we were before anyone else.”

After all that is why Jesus gave us so much information about what to look for in the days prior to His second coming. It is sad to see so many people are not ready for what is coming on this generation.  Keep in mind, Jesus in Matthew chapter 24 told us the following: ³³ So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. ³⁴ Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.”

10 injured in explosion near Lebanon-Syria border

Some 10 people were injured after explosions were reported at a gas storage warehouse in the town of Al-Qasr in northeastern Lebanon near the Lebanese-Syrian border on Sunday evening, according to Lebanese media. The explosion occurred while Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah was speaking to mark the anniversary of the assassination of former IRGC Quds Force commander Qassam Soleimani. Intense flights of IDF aircraft were reported by Lebanese media over southern and central Lebanon throughout the afternoon and evening, including when the explosion occurred. Hezbollah has been accused of smuggling goods and dollars from Lebanon into Syria and harming the Lebanese economy, as well as smuggling weapons from Syria into Lebanon. According to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, the warehouse where the explosion took place on Sunday is owned by a person who is close with Hezbollah. A Fars Air Qeshm flight landed in Damascus from Iran on Sunday morning and returned to Tehran on Sunday afternoon, according to civilian flight tracking sites. The airline is suspected of being used to smuggle weapons from Iran to Syria and Lebanon.

Saudi Arabia to reopen airspace, land border to Qatar, says Kuwait

Saudi Arabia will reopen its airspace and land and sea border to Qatar as of Monday, Kuwait’s foreign minister said in televised comments, citing a deal towards resolving a political dispute that led Riyadh and its allies to impose a boycott on Qatar. Saudi state agency SPA quoted Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as saying the annual gathering of Gulf leaders would unite Gulf ranks “in the face of challenges facing the region”. Kuwait’s foreign minister said a declaration would be signed at the summit, which was postponed from its usual December date as Riyadh pushed for an agreement towards ending the rift. Doha had been given 13 demands, ranging from closing Al Jazeera television and shuttering a Turkish base to cutting links to the Muslim Brotherhood and downgrading ties with Iran. Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner, joined by Middle East envoy Avi Berkowitz and Brian Hook, a special State Department adviser, were flying to the Saudi Arabia to attend the signing ceremony, a senior Trump administration official said.

At least 15 killed in Syria road attack

Gunmen killed at least 15 people in Syria, mostly government soldiers traveling on a bus in the second such road ambush in recent days, a war monitor said Monday. The ambush late Sunday resulted in the deaths of eight soldiers, four allied fighters and three civilians, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, updating an earlier toll. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the monitor said the Daesh group was to blame. Another 15 people were wounded, with cars and fuel tankers also attacked, in the Wadi Al-Azib area of Hama province. Syria’s official news agency SANA said the “terrorist attack” killed nine people, all civilians. Last week, the IS group said it ambushed a bus on December 30 in Syria’s eastern Deir Ezzor province, killing at least 37 soldiers.

Iran resumes 20% uranium enrichment, seizes South Korean tanker

Iran has resumed the production of 20% enriched uranium at its underground nuclear facility in Fordow, an Iranian government spokesman said Monday. Iranian state media later reported that authorities had seized a South Korean-flagged tanker and arrested its crew, alleging “oil pollution” in the Persian Gulf. The news comes amid heightened U.S. fears of a possible Iranian attack, one year after the assassination of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani. 20% enriched uranium — which is banned under the 2015 nuclear deal — can’t be used for military purposes, but is a step closer to the 90% enrichment needed to build a nuclear bomb. The announcement come less than three weeks before Biden assumes office, and is perceived as an Iranian attempt to pressure the new administration to move quickly toward rejoining the nuclear deal and easing sanctions.

National Guard Activated to Help Support Police During Pro-Trump Protests

Some 100 National Guardsmen will be in Washington this week to help support police officers patrolling protests planned by President Donald Trump supporters this week. “We have received confirmation that the D.C. National Guard will be assisting the Metropolitan Police Department, beginning tomorrow through the life cycle of this event,” Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee III told reporters at a press conference on Monday. National Guard personnel will be assisting police officers with crowd management and traffic control, freeing officers “to focus on anyone who’s intent on instigating, agitating, or participating in violence in our city,” he added. Bowser said guardsmen would not be armed and would not be engaged in domestic surveillance, searches, or seizures of Americans. Pro-Trump ralliers plan on gathering in D.C. this week to protest during the counting of electoral votes. The main locations police expect people to gather are the U.S. Capitol, Freedom Plaza, and the Ellipse near the White House.

The First Country To Move To A 100% Digital Monetary System Is… Venezuela

Venezuela’s government is planning to move to a fully digital economy as hyperinflation has made worthless bolivar notes practically disappear, and dollarization expands through the local financial system. As Bloomberg reports, some banks have had technical meetings with Venezuela’s central bank in an attempt to solve the problem amid high skepticism and caution due to U.S. sanctions. But Maduro vowed to create “payment formats” allowing transactions using savings and checking accounts in U.S. dollars, which is especially bizarre since Venezuela has been technically cut off from SWIFT and so Caracas may have no choice but to become the world’s first fully digital monetary regime. And yet, comedy or not, central banks the world over will be closely watching to see just how Venezuela will screw up this experiment of becoming the world’s first fully digital economy, because as we have been warning for a while: digital currencies – under the protective umbrella of the so-called ISO 20022 – are coming to every broke country near you in the next 12-24 months.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver closes Congress’ opening prayer with ‘amen and awoman’

A House Democrat tasked with leading the body in an opening prayer for the new Congress has gendered the word “amen.” To close a prayer he delivered from the House chamber Sunday to mark the swearing in of the 117th Congress, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), an ordained minister, altered the traditional “amen” to say “amen and awoman.” “May the Lord lift up the light of his countenance upon us and give us peace,” Cleaver said during his two-minute invocation, “peace in our families, peace across this land, and dare I ask, o Lord, peace even in this chamber.” “We ask it in the name of the monotheistic God, Brahma (a Hindu deity), and ‘God’ known by many names by many different faiths. Amen and awoman.” While Cleaver may have been trying to be inclusive to women, “amen” is not a gendered word. The word translates from Hebrew to mean “so be it.”

Controversial Bill Gates-funded plan to dim the sun’s rays moves forward quietly

A bizarre-sounding plan to save Earth funded by tech guru Bill Gates is “quietly” moving forward. The plan — to dim the sun’s rays and their impact on the earth — is reportedly all in the name of helping to revitalize the environment and thus save the human race. The billionaire philanthropist is set on saving the Earth no matter the cost. “While you may have been paying attention to [Gates’] efforts on vaccination and lockdowns, you may not have noticed that one of Gates’ most controversial causes just got a go-ahead: A project that would help block out the sun,” the Western Journal’s Douglas Golden wrote.  Reuters reported that the geo-engineering plan — a Harvard University project funded largely by Gates— “plans to test out a controversial theory that global warming can be stopped by spraying particles into the atmosphere that would reflect the sun’s rays.” The news organization reported that the Swedish Space Corporation has already taken strides in testing out the theory. In a small step, the Swedish Space Corporation agreed this week to help Harvard researchers launch a balloon near the Arctic town of Kiruna next June. It would carry a gondola with 600 kg of scientific equipment 20 km (12 miles) high. “The idea is simple: spray a bunch of particles into the stratosphere, and they will cool the planet by reflecting some of the Sun’s rays back into space,” Nature’s Jeff Tollefson wrote in 2018. “Scientists have already witnessed the principle in action.”

“Bomb Cyclone” Detonates Over Alaska’s Aleutian Islands Unleashing Hurricane Force Winds

A monster storm explosively intensified in the northern Pacific near Alaska’s Aleutian Islands on New Year’s Eve, battering the region with hurricane-force winds, heavy seas, and torrential rains, according to Reuters. “It’s the most intense storm ever recorded in the North Pacific, excluding typhoons,” said Brian Brettschneider, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientist with the National Weather Service (NWS).  The storm is classified as a “bomb cyclone” after meteorologists recorded barometric pressure of 921 millibars, a record-low reading for the region, equivalent to the center of a Category 4 hurricane. The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Ocean Prediction Center (OPC) tweeted Thursday night: “Here is the latest surface analysis showing a strong storm with winds to #hurricaneforce moving toward the Bering Sea. The central pressure is 921 MB making it one of the strongest storms to ever impact the North Pacific. Winds are expected to reach 95 kts near the low center!”

Tropical Cyclone “Imogen” to hit Queensland with strong winds, dangerous storm tide and heavy rain, Australia

A tropical low formed on January 1 near Groote Eylandt in the western Gulf of Carpentaria, about 635 km (395 miles) ESE of Darwin in favorable environmental conditions, characterized by very warm sea surface temperatures of up to 31 °C (88 °F), low to moderate vertical wind shear and established poleward outflow channel in the upper levels. A Tropical Cyclone Watch was issued by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) at 00:00 UTC on January 2 for parts of the northwestern Queensland coast. The low continued intensifying and was named Imogen at 06:00 UTC today. At the time, the system had maximum 10-minute winds of 65 km/h (40 mph), maximum 3-second wind gusts up to 100 km/h (62 mph), and a central pressure of 991 hPa. It was moving SE at 12 km/h (7 mph).

A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2021 AA flew past Earth at a distance of 0.62 LD / 0.00159 AU (237 860 km / 147 800 miles) from the center of our planet at 13:16 UTC on January 1, 2021. This is the first known asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year. In 2020, we had 107 such flybys, up from 77 in 2019, 76 in 2018, 55 in 2017, and 53 in 2016. Asteroid 2021 AA was first observed at Mt. Lemmon Survey, Arizona on January 2, one day after it made its close approach to Earth. It belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 11 and 24 m (36 – 79 feet).

Gaza militants fire two rockets toward southern Israel

IDF strikes Gaza in response to earlier rocket attacks

The IDF struck targets belonging to Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Striplate Friday night in response to rockets fired from Gaza into Israeli territory earlier in the night. During the IDF operation, a rocket weapon production site was targeted, in addition to underground infrastructure and a Hamas military post. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said after the strike that “the IDF condemns any kind of terror attacks against Israel, and it is ready and prepared to act in determinations against attempts to harm Israeli citizens and against Israeli sovereignty. “Attacks by the IDF won’t break the will of the Palestinian people, but strengthen their resolve to insist on their rights,” a Hamas statement released after the attacks read.

The leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah said Sunday his group now has twice as many precision-guided missiles as it had a year ago, saying Israel’s efforts to prevent it from acquiring them have failed. Hassan Nasrallah, in an end-of-year interview with the Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen TV, said his group has the capability to strike anywhere in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. During the four-hour interview, Nasrallah said there are many matters related to his group that Israel has no knowledge of because those are kept in a “very tight circle.” Nasrallah repeated vows that Iran and its allies will avenge the U.S. killing of the commander of the elite Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Qassim Soleimani, in a drone attack a year ago in Iraq. “That revenge is coming no matter how long it takes,” he told Al-Mayadeen TV, sitting with a picture of Soleimani to his left. Nasrallah also vowed to avenge Israel’s killing of a Hezbollah fighter in Syria earlier this year.

Reports: Israeli airstrikes in Syria target pro-Iran weapons facilities, kill 6

Syrian state media said Israel carried out airstrikes in the central province of Hama early Friday morning. Syria’s official news agency SANA said the attack occurred near the town of Masyaf and that the missiles were fired from Lebanese territory. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-Syrian opposition organization, claimed the strikes hit positions of Iran-backed militias and killed at least six foreign paramilitaries. The claim could not be verified. The Observatory said the strikes targeted the Iran-backed groups’ arms depots and facilities for manufacturing short-range missiles. The Associated Press said Israeli jets flew very low over parts of Lebanon before the strikes, including over Beirut, frightening some of the city’s residents.

Turkey warns Libya’s Haftar and supporters against attacking its forces

Libyan Army threatens to respond to Turkish forces in ‘appropriate and unexpected manner’

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar warned on Sunday that the forces of Khalifa Haftar and their supporters based in eastern Libya would be viewed as “legitimate targets” if they attempted to attack Turkish forces in the region. Speaking during a visit to Turkish troops in Tripoli, Akar said Haftar’s forces and his supporters would have “nowhere to run” if they attacked Turkish forces, adding they would become targets for Ankara “everywhere.”

US says it will open a consulate in disputed Western Sahara

The State Department said Thursday the United States will open a consulate in Western Sahara following President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed region. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement that the process of opening the facility has begun. That process involves finding and securing a suitable property for a mission before personnel are hired. It was not immediately clear when or where it would be open but until then Pompeo said the U.S. Embassy in Rabat would operate a virtual consulate to serve Western Sahara. Recognizing Western Sahara was a reversal of decades of U.S. policy and the move has been heavily criticized, not least by those in Western Sahara who have fought for independence and want a referendum on the territory’s future.

Russia will defend Armenia if Azerbaijan attacks border region: Pashinyan

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Sunday that Russia will intervene to ensure the security of Armenia in the event that Azerbaijan attempts to launch any attack on the Syunik border region. “The most important issue is ensuring security … As a result of the measures that have been taken, a war has been prevented in Syunik, not only today, but in general,” Pashinyan said, speaking on state television in Armenia. He continued, “Our deployment took place in a way that ensures that in the event that Syunik is tampered with, the armed forces of Armenia and even Russia will intervene.”

Belarus authorities crack down on Lukashenko protesters

Hundreds of Belarusians spent the last weekend of 2020 taking to the streets in a largely peaceful demonstration, releasing red and white helium-filled balloons. More than a dozen people have been detained. Hundreds of demonstrators marched through the streets of Belarus on Sunday to protest against President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the country for more than a quarter of a century. Local human rights center Viasna said 13 people were detained during the traditional weekend protests — 10 in Minsk and three more in other Belarusian cities. Belarus media reported that groups of people took part in small rallies scattered throughout the country and that heavy security forces were also present in Minsk. Videos showed protesters with red and white flags marching through courtyards in residential areas of the capital, chanting “Long live Belarus!” and “As long as we’re united, we’re invincible.” There have been more than 30,000 detentions since the protests began.

Chinese delegation meets Nepal PM amid political crisis

A Chinese delegation reportedly held talks with Nepali Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli and President Bidya Devi Bhandari in Kathmandu on Sunday in a first diplomatic step by the neighbouring power after the prime minister dissolved parliament a week ago. The four-member delegation led by Guo Yezhou, a vice minister in the international department of the Communist Party of China, arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday to assess the political situation following the rift in the governing Nepal Communist Party (NCP). Prime Minister Oli decided to dissolve the country’s parliament last Sunday and called for parliamentary election more than a year ahead of the schedule following a power struggle in the NCP. He had led an alliance with former Maoist rebels to a landslide victory in 2017. The move triggered deep political unrest and street protests in the Himalayan nation as it grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic and left the ruling party on the verge of a split. “I think the Chinese have come to assess the overall situation after the dissolution of parliament and virtual break-up of the Nepal Communist Party,” said Narayan Khadka, a senior leader of the opposition Nepali Congress party. The Chinese Embassy in Nepal was not immediately available for comment.

Polls open in Central African Republic amid fears of unrest in first elections since peace deal

Voting has begun in Central African Republic’s presidential and legislative elections after a campaign period marked by violence between rebels and government forces. The government blames the unrest on former president Francois Bozize, who returned from exile a year ago and has been blocked from running in the election. He has been accused of joining up with armed groups to destabilise the country and launch a coup. He has denied it. Despite calls from the opposition to delay the vote amid the insecurity, the Constitutional Court rejected a postponement. President Faustin-Archange Touadera, seeking a second term, has tried to reassure candidates and voters that the voting will be secure. This is the central African country’s first election since a peace deal was signed between the government and 14 rebel groups in February 2019, although fighting continues. Three peacekeepers from Burundi were killed by armed combatants and two others wounded on Friday. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attacks in the Dekoua and Bakouma areas ahead of the elections, calling for swift justice and saying they may constitute war crimes. The UN retook the town of Bambari last week from rebels. Rebel groups have also seized several towns near the capital, Bangui. Voters went to the polls in the capital on Sunday, though others had fled the violence over the holiday weekend.

The Persecution of Christians, November 2020

The following are among the abuses inflicted on Christians by Muslims throughout the month of November 2020.  While not all, or even most, Muslims are involved, persecution of Christians by extremists is growing. The report posits that such persecution is not random but rather systematic, and takes place irrespective of language, ethnicity, or location. Here is a sample:
“They tried to force some of our Christians to convert to Islam. They also tried to force my wife and our four children to convert to Islam, but when they refused to convert, they shot my wife in the head while our four children were cut into pieces with a Somali sword. — Morningstar News, Democratic Republic of Congo.
“Islamic militants turned a village soccer field in northern Mozambique into an execution ground when they beheaded more than 50 people during three days of savage violence…. More than 2,000 people have been killed and about 430,000 left homeless in the region since 2017.” — Barnabas Aid, Mozambique.
For two months after kidnapping a deaf and mute Christian teenage girl her, five Muslim men repeatedly gang-raped and tortured her. All this time, police ignored the parents’ pleas to intervene. It was only when a local authority took up the case, and only after months of court meetings, that the girl was located and returned to her parents. One of the kidnappers insisted the girl had willingly converted to Islam and married him. — British Pakistani Christian Association, Pakistan.

Former CDC Director Calls For ‘Immunity Passports’

Singapore Airlines launches ‘digital health passport’

Dr. Thomas Frieden, the former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday proposed the idea of certificates of vaccination like “immunity passports” for U.S. citizens to prove they’ve been inoculated, claiming the measure could help the country return “back to a new normal.” Speaking on “CBS This Morning,” Frieden, who was appointed CDC director by Barack Obama, said that “done right, immunity passports could be one of a series of things that could help us get to a new normal as soon as possible.” Concerning the immunity passports, Frieden said there should be certain standards that need to be followed before such a policy is implemented. “First of, absolute privacy. No ability of people to use that data for anything else. Second, absolutely opt-in,” he said. “If you don’t want one, you don’t have to get one. And third, complete transparency about how they’re being used so that there are no surprises anywhere.” Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang last week also proposed an idea about a need for proof of vaccination.

Since 2017, Cumbre Vieja has experienced 7 seismic swarms — 1 in 2017, 1 in 2018, and 5 in 2020.​  The last eruption of this volcano took place in 1971 (VEI 2). According to the Volcanological Institute of Canary Islands (INVOLCAN), the swarm consists of small-magnitude events at depths between 20 and 30 km (12.3 – 18.6 miles). From 21:26 UTC on December 23 to 07:38 UTC on December 26, a total of 602 earthquakes have been detected, of which 126 have been located. The epicenters are mainly on the western slope of Cumbre Vieja. Since the beginning of the series, the maximum magnitude of the localized earthquakes is 2.3 mbLg. So far, the energy released in the form of earthquakes in the present series reaches a value of 6×10⁹ Joules.
