An Israeli jet shot down a Hamas drone on Tuesday over the Gaza Strip coastline, the military said. The drone did not infiltrate Israeli airspace and had been under surveillance from the moment it took off from Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. The decision to shoot the drone down was reached after it was seen approaching Israeli airspace, the military said. An F-16 Israel Air Force fighter jet, which was dispatched to intercept the drone, fired an air-to-air missile at the drone at around 10 A.M, shooting it down.

Headline:   How will Israel respond to Assad’s ‘warning’?

Until now, whenever a mortar shell or stray artillery fire from Syria’s civil war landed in Israeli territory in the Golan Heights, Israel made a point of attacking a Syrian position or mortar belonging to the Syrian troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. It was part of a formula developed by Israel over the past few years, ever since the Syrian civil war started lapping against the border fence in the Golan Heights. So far, the strategy has proved itself effective. Over the past two weeks, however, the situation has changed. The number of mortar shells landing in the Israeli Golan Heights has increased considerably. Meanwhile, Israel has concluded that an automatic response targeting the Syrian army has worn thin and is not necessarily the right response. “It is not impossible that the next time this happens, the various rebel groups will be the ones to take a hit from us,” a senior Israeli military source told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity. “This game must end. We are completely aware of the fact that it is not just mortars and bombs fired by Assad’s army that are landing in Israeli territory. On quite a few occasions, it is rebel fire. As such, the immunity granted to the rebels until now is over. From this point on, whoever is responsible for the fire will suffer the brunt of the response.” These frequent trickles of mortar fire have forced Israel to station an “Iron Dome” anti-missile battery in the Golan Heights for the first time in a very long time. This battery has already succeeded by shooting down two artillery shells fired at the Golan Heights on Sept. 17. Even though Syrian forces failed to hit the Israeli jet after firing the anti-aircraft missiles, the Syrian regime jubilantly and falsely reported that two Israeli aircraft had been downed. While the Syrian missiles did not endanger the Israeli jets, that same evening Israel sent a blunt and focused warning to Damascus. Russian involvement boosted Assad’s self-confidence, and he is back in the game, even in the Golan Heights. This means that we must do everything we can to ensure that the game doesn’t reach us. “

Jordan’s King Abdullah warned Israel would find itself in “a sea of hatred” if it did not accept a Palestinian state, while also condemning Muslim terrorists from the United Nations rostrum Tuesday. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Abdullah spoke of the importance of peace between Israel and Palestinians, blaming the ongoing conflict for continued unrest in the region. “No injustice has spread more bitter fruit than the denial of a Palestinian state. I say: Peace is a conscious decision,” the king said. “Israel has to embrace peace or eventually be engulfed in a sea of hatred in a region of turmoil.” Mentioning only the Christian and Muslim connection to Jerusalem holy sites, Abdullah accused Israel of attempting to alter the identity of the city. “As the Custodian of Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem, I will continue my efforts to protect these places, and stand up against all violations of their sanctity, including attempts for temporal and spatial division of Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif,” he said.

Headline:  Gunfire, riots and power cuts after controversial Jordan poll

Widespread rioting broke out in Jordan on Tuesday night after preliminary results of the country’s parliamentary election were reported, amid complaints of vote-rigging. Residents of the restive southern city of Maan blocked roads, burned tyres and threw bricks until disturbances were eventually quelled by Jordanian security forces, according to the local news website Roya. Residents told Roya that they heard intense gunfire after nightfall and that electricity was cut off in various areas of the city. There was another reported incident of rioting just north-west of the capital, Amman, after supporters of a parliamentary candidate, who has not been named, read news reports which suggested that he had not won a seat. In Madaba, just south-west of Amman, members of the special forces used tear gas to disperse angry crowds who burned tyres in front of the local electoral commission headquarters. A member of the special forces sustained a gunshot wound during the riot and was treated in hospital, authorities said. The head of Jordan’s electoral commission, Jihad al-Mumani, put out a statement on Wednesday afternoon denying that any official election results had been announced.

Headline:      Syria says warplane crashed but does not confirm shot down by IS

A Syrian monitoring group says a warplane has crashed northwest of the capital, Damascus, as Islamic State group militants claim they downed it. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the fate of the pilot remains unclear. It says it was unclear if the warplane was downed Wednesday or had technical problems. The Observatory says the plane crashed in the eastern Qalamoun mountains, northwest of Damascus. The ISIS-affiliated news agency Aamaq says the group’s militants downed the plane in eastern Qalamoun, after the aircraft carried out four raids against it. The agency says the plane crashed in an area controlled by either the government or rebel factions, indicating it would not have pictures of the aircraft.

Hezbollah fighters have targeted militants near the border village of Tfail, party-run media reported Wednesday. The War Media Center tweeted that it shelled militants belonging to the Qadisia Brigades, who were hiding in a house southwest of the village. It did not say if anyone was wounded or killed in the attack. Hezbollah and the Lebanese Army regularly pound militant hideouts along the border with Syria. Tfail, an eastern Bekaa Valley enclave that extends into Syria, is an important base for Hezbollah’s military operations against militants in the area.

Headline:       Cross-border projectile from Yemen wounds Saudi man

The Saudi Civil Defense says a citizen has been wounded by a projectile fired from Yemen into the southern border region of Najran. Capt. Abdelkhaliq al-Qahtani said in a statement that emergency forces responded to the incident Wednesday morning and that the wounded Saudi man was taken to the hospital for treatment. A Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi rebels and their allies since March 2015. The two sides frequently exchange cross-border fire, though the effects of the war are most felt in Yemen, where some 10,000 people been killed or wounded in the conflict.

A convoy was destroyed by airstrikes en route to deliver humanitarian aid to the Syrian town of Urum al-Kubra.  In a furious speech, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that all air forces must be grounded in N. Syria as the only way to give the truce a chance and enable humanitarian aid to get through. Addressing the UN Security Council meeting on the Syrian crisis Wednesday, he called on all countries to cease support to any groups opposed to a truce and negotiations, calling them “spoilers.” There is no other choice, he said. The fate of Syria hangs by a threat. He lambasted Russia over the air attack on an international aid convoy to Aleppo that killed 28 air workers. It was suggested that only the Russian air force is capable of operations by night. Kerry said that listening to the Russian foreign minister made him feel as though he was in a “parallel universe.” He was responding to Sergei Lavrov’s demand for a thorough investigation into the charge that the aid convoy bombed included a pick-up truck with weapons for the rebels in Aleppo.

Syria Headline:       Russia to send flagship aircraft carrier to Syria

The Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier would be sent to join Russia’s current naval deployment there, Minister Sergei Shoigu said during a televised meeting. “Currently the Russian naval deployment to the east Mediterranean consists of no less than six battleships and three or four support vessels,” he said. “In order to bolster the military capabilities of the group we plan to add the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier to the group,” Shoigu said, without specifying a timeframe. Russia has been flying a bombing campaign in Syria for the past year in support of Bashar al-Assad and has deployed a naval contingent to back up its operation. This is the first time that the Soviet-era Kuznetsov – Russia’s only aircraft carrier that is part of its Northern fleet based in Murmansk – will join the Russian deployment after undergoing a refurbishment. Russia has a base in government-controlled Syrian territory from which it has flown most of its bombing raids in the country.

Iraq Headline: ISIS believed to have attacked US base in Iraq with chemical agent

ISIS fighters are believed to have attacked U.S. and Iraqi forces with a chemical weapon Tuesday evening, a U.S. official told Fox News. The U.S base outside Qayyarah, 25 miles south of Mosul, came under rocket fire, and traces of a “mustard agent” were believed to be present, the official said. The attack was first reported by CNN. A Pentagon official told reporters that a “tar-like black oily substance” was found on one of the shells that landed within the base, only hundreds of yards from U.S. forces. An initial test for the agent was positive, but “could be false,” the official said. The second test was negative, possibly because the shell had been exposed to the elements.  No U.S. troops were injured in the attack and there were “no signs of exposure” shown by any U.S. troops, including the two soldiers who inspected the shell. Two to four soldiers who were near the shell received full decontamination treatment. “Unless you are right next to [the shell], exposure is unlikely,” the official said. U.S. troops at the base are equipped with chemical weapons exposure suits. The official said the base is attacked, “fairly often” with conventional weapons, but Tuesday’s assault is believed to be the first chemical attack on U.S. forces in Iraq since they returned to the country in 2014. Currently, nearly 5,000 U.S. troops are on the ground in Iraq.  The ordinance and residue from the shell are being sent to Ft. Detrick, Md. for processing to confirm chemical agent. Unlike mustard gas, which can spread, mustard agent leaves an oily residue behind. The official said the security posture at the base had not changed.

At a parade in Tehran, shown on state TV, the military displayed a wide array of long-range missiles, tanks, and the Russian-supplied S-300 surface-to-air missile defense system. In a reference to Iran’s arch-foe Israel, a banner on one military truck shown on state TV read,: “If the leaders of the Zionist regime make a mistake then the Islamic Republic will turn Tel Aviv and Haifa to dust.”

Headline:       9 civilians killed in reported airstrike in Libya

At least nine people were killed and 20 injured after military jets reportedly struck civilians near the town of Houn in central Libya. The UN-backed government has denied flying bombing missions in the area. The Thursday airstrike near the oasis town was carried out by unidentified warplanes, according to eyewitnesses cited by Reuters. A spokesperson for forces of Libya’s rogue eastern government blamed the air force of the western government. According to the spokesperson, war planes from city of Misrata tried to target a brigade, which recently arrived to the area, but bombed the civilians instead. A Libyan air force spokesman in Misrata, however, claimed that their war planes conducted only reconnaissance missions along the coast. “Our air force did not reach that area. We only conducted reconnaissance in the coastal region,” Reuters quotes Mohamed Gonono, the spokesman, as saying. Eyewitnesses said the planes attacked the civilians as they were visiting thermal springs to the south of the town. According to local doctors, at least nine people were killed and 20 wounded.

Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Shavaresh Koucharyan voiced his country’s determination to implement previous agreements and sign new ones with Iran as part of its long-term and unchanging policy to enhance ties with the Islamic Republic. Heading a delegation from Armenia, Koucharyan had a meeting in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Morteza Sarmadi on Sunday. Rejecting any change in Yerevan’s long-term policies on Iran, irrespective of different administrations, the Armenian diplomat said his country seeks stronger bilateral relations with Iran by implementing the agreements reached between the two countries in the past and by signing new accords. The Iranian deputy foreign minister, for his part, said that Tehran, in line with its “principled policy of close and friendly cooperation with neighbors”, is fully prepared to broaden interaction with Armenia in all areas, as in the energy field, transportation, industries and trade. Sarmadi also highlighted the necessity for resolving regional conflicts through dialogue and peaceful approaches. Iran and its northwestern neighbor, Armenia, have enjoyed amicable relations in a whole host of fields. Armenia announced in early June that it has approved signing an agreement with Iran to abolish the visa regime between the two countries.

Perhaps it was a coincidence that Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna and tipped to be the next Pope, chose September 12, the anniversary of the Siege of Vienna, when Turkey’s Ottoman troops nearly conquered Europe, to deliver a most dramatic appeal to save Europe’s Christian roots. “Many Muslims want and say that ‘Europe is finished’,” Cardinal Schönborn said, before accusing Europe of “forgetting its Christian identity.” He then denounced the possibility of “an Islamic conquest of Europe.” Konrad Pesendorfer, head of the Austrian Office of Statistics, said that by 2030, 40% of the population of Vienna will be foreign-born, thanks to internal demography and migration flows (60,000 arrivals in just one year). Since the fall of Constantinople in 1453, much of Eastern Europe’s Christian population spent centuries under Islamic occupation, particularly under the Ottomans. It now seems that the clock has reverted to 1683, when Ottoman armies were at the gates of Vienna.

State Department spokesman John Kirby acknowledged Wednesday that Islamic State terrorists are trying to mingle with refugee populations overseas in the hopes of making it to the U.S. posing as a refugee. “I wouldn’t debate the fact that there’s the potential for ISIS terrorists to try to insert themselves, and we see that in some of the refugee camps in Jordan and in Turkey, where they try to insert themselves into the population,” Kirby said on “Fox and Friends.” Still, he argued that the vetting process for these refugees is tough, and should be enough to keep terrorists out, although he admitted it’s not a perfect process. “The vetting process, while not perfect, is a very, very stringent, and it can take almost up to two years for a single refugee to make it into the country,” he said. He said in the same interview: “Is it perfect? Can it be perfect? Can it be foolproof? Well, probably not, no.” Questions about refugee vetting have been raised again after the weekend bombings in New York and New Jersey, which police believe may have been done by a U.S. national who was born in Afghanistan. Just days later, President Obama met with world leaders in New York to ask them to accept more refugees, even as Republicans in Congress and Donald Trump have said the U.S. needs to slow down the process of accepting people.

Twelve police officers have been injured during protests sparked by the police shooting of a black man in Charlotte, North Carolina. Demonstrators destroyed marked police cars around the block of flats where the shooting took place, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department tweeted. One officer was hit in the face with a rock, it said. Earlier on Tuesday, Keith Lamont Scott, 43, was shot by a black officer and died in hospital. Police say he was carrying a gun and posed an “imminent deadly threat”, but relatives told local media he was not holding a weapon but a book. “He didn’t have no gun,” a woman identifying herself as his sister told local television. “He wasn’t messing with nobody.” Protesters outraged over the incident blocked streets and police used tear gas, local media reported. Headline:       Shabaab captures town in central Somalia

Shabaab, al Qaeda’s branch in East Africa, has claimed control of a town in the central Somalian region of Hiraan in recent days. According to local news and Shabaab-affiliated outlets, the town of Mogokori was captured after Ethiopian troops withdrew from the region. Ethiopian troops first captured the town from Shabaab in 2014. A Shabaab-affiliated Telegram account released a report earlier today in which the jihadist group claimed control over Mogokori after the Ethiopian troops that were previously stationed there left. The statement, which was later translated into English by al Qaeda’s Global Islamic Media Front, also states that the Ethiopian fortifications outside of the city were also captured. Photos purporting to show these claims were also released on Shabaab’s Radio Andalus website. However, local media has confirmed these claims. Garowe Online, a Somali-website, reported that the entire Mogokori district has also fallen to jihadist forces. This comes only a few days after Shabaab also claimed control over the town of Budbud in the Galguduud Region, also after Ethiopian troops reportedly withdrew from the town. Additionally, Ethiopian forces were reportedly ambushed yesterday near the town of Elbur in Galguduud. However, there were no reports of casualties.

Headline:         Indian, Pakistani soldiers exchange fire in Kashmir

Indian and Pakistani soldiers have exchanged fire along the de facto border dividing the disputed region of Kashmir, Indian military sources say. Army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said Indian and Pakistani troops traded fire close to the town of Uri on Tuesday, accusing Pakistani army troops of a “ceasefire violation” and opening fire along the Line of Control (LoC). An unnamed Indian police officer also noted that “small arms exchange of fire is on in the area.” There has been no immediate report of casualties, and Islamabad has yet to comment on the latest incident of fighting in the volatile region. On Sunday, militants attacked an Indian army base in Kashmir. Nearly 20 Indian soldiers were killed. The Indian army blamed Pakistan-based militants for the assault. Representatives of Ukraine and separatist rebels agreed Wednesday to pull back troops and weapons from several areas in eastern Ukraine in an attempt to shore up a fragile peace agreement. Darka Olifer, spokeswoman for ex-President Leonid Kuchma who represents Ukraine in the so-called Contact Group, said that the agreement signed in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, applies to three specific areas and will be monitored by observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. She added that the deal was signed by Kuchma, Russian representative Boris Gryzlov and OSCE envoy Martin Sajdik. Rebel representatives in the group said that the separatist leaders of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions would honor the agreement, Olifer added. The conflict in eastern Ukraine between Russian-backed separatist rebels and Ukrainian government troops has killed more than 9,600 people since it erupted in April 2014, according to the United Nations. A February 2015 agreement in Minsk, which was brokered by France and Germany, helped end large-scale battles, but smaller clashes have continued to claim lives and a political settlement has stalled.

During the first post-Brexit EU summit in Bratislava on Friday a group of Central European countries, known as the Visegrad Four, threatened to vote down any Brexit agreement that would infringe on people’s right to work in the United Kingdom. The summit’s Slovakian host, Prime Minister Robert Fico, warned that Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia would dig their heels in on this issue and that no compromise was possible in negotiations. In an interview with Radio Sputnik Constance Le Grip, a French member of the European Parliament from The Republicans Party and deputy head of the French delegation to the European People’s Party, said that in Bratislava the attending heads iof state and government were “walking in circles approving a declaration which is just a repetition of what they had previously said and written many times over.  “There is no idea in it, no real reset. It is completely devoid of creativity and a desire to make things right. A useless summit,” she said. When asked what she thought about the promise by the Visegrad Four to veto the agreement on Britain’s exit from the European Union if it limited their citizens’ right to work in the UK, Constance Le Grip said that the statement by these four EU countries was starkly at variance with the agenda of the Bratislava summit.

Headline:    Satanic Temple to Open Headquarters in Salem, Massachusetts

Officials in the Massachusetts town best known for its 17th century witch trials are taking a closer look at the planned opening of Satanic Temple’s relocated international headquarters there this week. The new headquarters in the town of Salem is an old Victorian mansion that once served as a funeral parlor and sits around the corner from an elementary school. The Satanic Temple is a recognized religious organization. Spokesman Lucien Greaves says the Temple “isn’t an attack on anybody” and stressed that members won’t be going door to door or affecting neighbors’ lives in any way. Salem officials say they are currently working to better understand the temple’s intended use.

Headline:   Christian pastors face death penalty if convicted in Sudan

Last December, two evangelical pastors from the Church of Christ in Sudan were taken from their churches and thrown into jail. Last month, the Rev. Abdulraheem Kodi and the Rev. Kuwa Shamal Abu Zumam were charged with numerous offenses, including waging war against the state, espionage and undermining Sudan’s constitutional system. Their trial has begun. They could get the death penalty if they’re found guilty. Two other men, Czech pastor Petr Jasek and Darfuri human rights activist Abduelmoneim Abdulmwlla, have also been detained. They, too, are accused of conspiring against the state, provoking hatred against or among sects and spreading false information.

A powerful typhoon ripped into southern Japan Tuesday, dumping torrential rains on the region that left some communities partially submerged and forced dozens of flights to be cancelled. Typhoon Malakas made landfall in the southernmost main island of Kyushu shortly after midnight, packing winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Television footage from public broadcaster NHK showed houses, cars and rice fields partly covered in the muddy brown water in Miyazaki Prefecture, where a record 578 millimetres of rain fell on one city in just 24 hours. Despite recent attempts at a ceasefire in the Syrian civil war, tensions are continuing to build around the occupied Golan Heights region. Amid Syrian media claims that Syrian government forces had shot down Israeli aircraft over southwest Syria, a video surfaced that appears to show Syrian rebel forces openly asking Israel for aid in the country’s ongoing civil war. Al-Masdar News, an Arab news site, posted the video on YouTube on Tuesday. It features what Al-Masdar claims is a phone call between an Israeli reporter and field commander from a rebel faction operating in Syria. Although the video’s YouTube title labels the rebels as members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), both the spoken dialogue and the accompanying article on Al-Masdar’s website suggest the group is part of Jaish al-Islam, a different, Saudi-backed force. Asked by the reporter to directly address the Israeli government, the field commander says (according to the video subtitles): “They should support revolution here. May they help us in everything, brother. According to the report from the London-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, Israeli aircraft attacked artillery positions manned by President Bashar Assad’s army in response to an incident earlier on Saturday in which two mortar shells were fired across the border into Israel. At least one soldier was killed in the attack and several others wounded, according to the observatory. The attacks took place in Quneitra, a city that was destroyed and abandoned in the 1973 Yom Kippur War and serves as an outpost of the Syrian military. According to the Walla news website, the soldier was identified as Muhammad Hassan a-Sid by Syrians using social media, and his picture was posted on social media websites. A statement accusing Israel of killing the soldier was also published by Hezbollah. The statement said an Israeli drone attacked the target in Khan Arnabe, a Syrian village flanking Quneitra from the east in the center of the Syrian Golan Heights.

In Monday’s first incident, a Palestinian stabbed two Israeli police officers outside Jerusalem’s Old City before being shot, Israeli authorities said. A 38-year-old policewoman was in serious condition from a stab wound to her neck, while a policeman in his mid-40s was being treated for moderate stab wounds. The Palestinian attacker was in serious condition after being shot in the head and limbs. Police identified the perpetrator as a Palestinian in his 20s from east Jerusalem and said he had followed the officers before attacking them. He was shot by the policeman he stabbed, a statement said. The attack happened by the Herod’s Gate entrance to the Old City in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem. Later in the day near a flashpoint holy site in Hebron in the occupied West Bank, two Palestinians attempted to stab Israeli border police before being shot, police said. One of the attackers was killed and the other was in critical condition, a police spokeswoman said. One of the officers was “very lightly wounded in his hand”. While the recent assailants are believed to have acted on their own, Hamas spokesman Abdel Latif Qanoua on Monday said the Islamist movement that runs the Gaza Strip welcomed the attacks.

A new project from The Temple Mount Heritage Foundation and ArchTour is perhaps the closest you can get to experiencing the Temple, at least until it is really built. The newly unveiled project uses virtual reality, a new technology used mainly for gaming and entertainment, in a way its innovators probably did not anticipate: immersing the user in a religious journey. The participant sits while wearing a special set of virtual reality goggles, which put him into a three-dimensional depiction of the world of the Second Temple. The tour begins in the open air shuk (market) in Jerusalem of approximately 2,000 years ago. It wanders by Robinson’s Arch and the Royal Stoa in the southwest corner in all their full glory, before passing in through the gates of the Temple. The virtual tour brings “visitors” through the Temple courtyards, past the altar, into the midst of the priests and their daily activity. The tour ends inside the Temple, where the visitor can see the menorah, the seven branched lamp, and the rack that held the show breads. Though animal sacrifices are not shown, the High Priest is seen performing the ketoret, the daily service in which the incense composed of 11 spices was burned on the small ‘Gold Altar’. “It is an all-inclusive experience. During your visit to the Kotel, you can see exactly how the Temple was situated relative to the present location. At the same time, you can see the actual service, down to the tiniest details.”

Lebanon has many problems, including sectarian divisions, Iranian influence, spillover from the Syrian civil war, the weakness of its army, the ineffectiveness of its politicians, and the very existence of Hizballah, but Israel’s existence next door is not one of them. The animosity of Lebanon towards Israel continues today only because it provides a convenient excuse for Hizballah to maintain a formidable arsenal that it uses to control Lebanon and to help its allies in Syria. Lebanon has a law forbidding its citizens from interacting with Israeli citizens. As Michael J. Totten wrote: “Lebanese citizens aren’t allowed to have any communication of any kind with Israelis anywhere in the world. If citizens of the two countries meet, say, on a beach in Cyprus or in a bar in New York, the Lebanese risks prison just for saying hello.” The Lebanese online news source NOW explains that law in detail. Even a dual citizen (of Lebanon and Canada for example) could be jailed for interacting in the most innocuous way with an Israeli. The Lebanese delegation, for example, recently refused to share a bus with the Israeli delegation at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio, prompting the Israeli minister of culture and sports to describe the incident as, “anti-Semitism, pure and simple, and the worst kind of racism.” The incident was, however, hardly surprising, considering the history of Lebanese animosity towards Israel.

Syria’s military declared a week-long ceasefire over on Monday and air raids were reported in Aleppo, even as officials from the United States and Russia met behind closed doors in Geneva to try to extend the truce. Syrian or Russian warplanes bombed rebel-held areas in the city of Aleppo and nearby villages, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, reporting a number of dead and injured. The monitoring group said it was not clear if the jets were Syrian or Russian. Moscow supports President Bashar al-Assad with its air force. The raids came as what is likely to be the final attempt by the U.S. administration of President Barack Obama to find a negotiated solution to the five year old civil war appeared close to collapse. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said it was too early to call the ceasefire finished, and the United Nations said that only Washington and Moscow could declare it over, as they were the ones who had originally agreed it. Washington said it was working to extend the truce but called on Russia to first clarify the Syrian army’s statement that it was over. Russian and U.S. officials met in Geneva on Monday and the International Syria Support Group – the countries backing the Syria peace process – were scheduled to meet on Tuesday in New York to assess the ceasefire agreement.

Sixty-two Syrian soldiers were killed and over 100 injured in the airstrike by the US-led coalition, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman, Major-General Igor Konashenkov, said, citing information received from the Syrian General Command. The Russian Defense Ministry said that the aircraft which carried out the bombings had entered Syrian airspace from the territory of Iraq. The Turkish Army reportedly mobilized a large force near the Syrian border-city of Tal Abyad in the northern Al-Raqqa countryside on Saturday night. According to activists in northern Syria, the Turkish Army increased their total number of military personnel at the Tal Abyad border-crossing, causing great concern for the local population. Some reports on Saturday evening indicated that the Turkish Armed Forces had already begun to shell Tal Abyad; however, no visual evidence was provided to corroborate this claim. Kurdish Headline:     Syrian Kurds prepare census for eventual elections in Rojava

Syria’s Al-Watan newspaper has reported that the Kurdish YPG-led Syrian Democratic Forces have requested help from the Syrian government and Russia in dealing with Turkey’s incursion into the country. To date, Turkey’s military, and it’s Free Syrian Army and Islamist proxies have captured scores of villages from the YPG. This unusual request comes after the YPG and Kurdish police targeted the National Defense Force (NDF) in an unprovoked attack and evicted the NDF and Syrian Army from Hasakah as part of a peace deal. The report also claimed that the Kurdish authorities were planning on conducting a census and then announce their ambitions to federalise their areas of control within a month. Effectively the Kurdish authorities are asking Damascus to fight Turkey and assist in the federalisation of Syria.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared Monday a major assault on the Islamic State with a bigger “safe zone” in Syria. The Turkish military will expand its offensive to 1,931 square miles after pushing into Syria in an effort to move the Islamic State and Kurdish separatists from the border area, Erdogan announced Monday. The border between Syria and Turkey is 580 miles. Erdogan said his country has already cleared “terrorist groups” from an area of about 560 square miles and wants to push into the Islamic State stronghold of al-Bab in northern Syria. “We have been planning to build houses and social facilities in a safe zone in northern Syria,” Erdogan said. “It has not happened until now. But I hope we can do so from now on.”
And Erdogan is envisioning an even bigger safe zone of 3,100 square miles.

A US air strike killed as many as eight Afghan policemen outside the embattled provincial capital of Uruzgan province, Afghan officials said on Monday, as security forces, supported by U.S. strikes, battle resurgent Taliban militants. An initial air strike late on Sunday killed one policeman, while a follow up strike targeted first responders, killing at least seven, said Rahimullah Khan, commander of the reserve police unit in Uruzgan. Another official, Uruzgan deputy police chief Mohammed Qawi Omari, put the death toll at six but also reported the police were killed by a foreign air strike.

Headline:        Sudan threatens to close border with the South

Sudan has threatened to close its border with South Sudan if authorities in the South do not expel groups opposed to Sudanese authorities. Sudanese officials are accusing their southern neighbour of hosting groups which contribute to the worsening situation in Darfur, the Blue Nile and South Kordofan. During a recent visit to Sudan, South Sudan’s new vice President, Taban Deng Gai, assured Juba that the rebel groups will be expelled in three weeks. One month later, Deng Gai’s promise has not been fulfilled. Apart from threats to close the border, Sudanese officials are also threatening to stop humanitarian assistance to the south.  The new wave of tension comes eight months after Omar al-Bashir’s decision to reopen the border with South Sudan.

Es Sider and Ras Lanuf were among four ports seized by forces loyal to eastern commander Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) on Sept. 11-12 from a Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG) faction led by Ibrahim Jathran. Control of the ports remained unclear though with the LNA saying it repelled PFG forces at one port. But the fighting came as the state-run National Oil Corporation prepared to restart oil exports at the ports that have been closed for nearly two years by clashes among rival armed factions.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, was apprehended Monday, Sept. 19, after a shootout in Linden, New Jersey, just hours after local and federal authorities launched a massive manhunt to capture him on suspicion of planting bombs in New York City and New Jersey over the weekend. An alert with his photo was widely published by cell phone. Rahami, who is of Afghan origin, is believed to have had accomplices. Our sources add that the five occupants of an SUV packed with IEDs stopped on a Brooklyn highway Sunday night are relatives. They were taken in for questioning. Rahami was wanted for questioning in the Chelsea bombing, in which 29 people were injured, and two bombing incidents in New Jersey. Rahami, a naturalized American citizen born in Afghanistan and resident of New Jersey, was described as “armed and dangerous.” The alert and photo of the wanted man were accompanied by the police raid of Rahami’s apartment in Elizabeth, New Jersey, after an explosion was triggered at the local rail station by a bomb squad robot examining a bag that turned out to contain five pipe bombs. The information coming in on the series of terrorist incidents over the weekend points strongly to the presence of a large-scale terrorist network, almost certainly linked to Al Qaeda, in New York and New Jersey.

People built barricades to block roads and burned tires and vehicles in the pro-opposition neighborhood of Limete. By 7:30 a.m., police were firing sporadic tear gas grenades. At mid-day, riot police and soldiers were stationed on the road leading to that meeting place near the parliament building. VOA saw security forces stopping at least six people who looked to be foreign observers and loading them into vehicles. An opposition leader told VOA by phone that he and others were penned in one of their party headquarters and unable to leave. A Congolese government spokesman told AFP news the government decided to cancel the demonstration after supporters of veteran opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi murdered two policemen in Limete.

Headline:       Somali general killed in suicide bombing

The Islamist militant group al-Shabab took responsibility for a suicide car bombing in Mogadishu, Somalia, in which an army general was killed. Maj. Gen, Mohamed Roble Jimale Gobanle, commander of the army’s third brigade, and five of his bodyguards died Sunday when their convoy was struck by a suicide bomber in a car heavily loaded with explosives. His brigade, with coalition troops from the African Union, was actively fighting the al-Qaida-aligned insurgents in southern Somalia. The incident, and al-Shabab’s acknowledgment of involvement, was announced on Radio Andalus, a pro-militant radio station, which added the suicide bomber was also killed. Witnesses reported a powerful explosion, and security official Mohanmed Hassan said several soldiers were injured.

Several hours later, four militants were killed in a shootout with the Indian army. It’s unclear which militant group is responsible. The attack, which took place near the de facto border between India and Pakistan in the disputed region, was one of the deadliest on an army base in Kashmir since militant attacks began in 1989. Headline:    NATO to deploy 4,000-strong ‘deterrent’ near Russia’s borders by May

NATO is set to deploy a “deterrent” and possible “fighting” force of some 4,000 troops to the Baltic region by next May. The chief of the European Command has called on the alliance to approach Russia from a “position of strength.” The announcement of the 4,000-strong contingent took place as military leaders from the military bloc gathered in Split, Croatia over the weekend. At the summit, Czech Army Gen. Petr Pavel said four battle groups will be sent to the region at different times in the first half of 2017. “With these four battle groups, we are not talking about exclusively about a training presence,” he said, according to Wall Street Journal. “This force is to serve as a deterrent and if necessary as a fighting force. The rules will be different,” Pavel added. The Croatian General pointed out that the new NATO force in the Baltic is planned to be commanded from the Polish division headquarters with US Army Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti overseeing any deployment of the new NATO force.

A new study finds Venezuela on the brink of famine, with an alarming fifteen percent of citizens saying they can only feed themselves with “food waste discarded by commercial establishments,” while nearly half say they have had to take time off work to search for food. The study — conducted by More Consulting and published in the Spanish-language Diario de las Américas — reflects a reality that has become the signature of President Nicolás Maduro’s tenure: a food and medicine shortage that forces most in the nation to wait in supermarket lines that can last up to eight hours. The More Consulting study found that three out of every four Venezuelans (72 percent) was unable to feed themselves an optimal diet of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. 24.2 percent say they rarely eat protein, living off of local tubers like yuca and malanga and some fruit. More than half of Venezuelans (52.3 percent) buy their foods through the black market, from private individuals who have stocked a surplus of an item they need.

University of Florida (UF) researchers say have identified a patient in Haiti with a serious mosquito-borne illness that has never before been reported in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country. Known as “Mayaro virus”, it is closely related to chikungunya virus and was first isolated in Trinidad in 1954. The symptoms of Mayaro fever are similar to those of chikungunya – fever, joint pain, muscle pain and rashes. Abdominal pain is also a feature of Mayaro fever, however, and joint pain can last longer. Most reported cases, however, have been confined to small outbreaks in the Amazon and the researchers question whether this case signals the start of a new outbreak in the Caribbean region is currently unknown. “While current attention has been focused on the Zika virus, the finding of yet another mosquito-borne virus which may be starting to circulate in the Caribbean is of concern,” said Dr Glenn Morris, director of the UF Emerging Pathogens Institute. “Hopefully we will not see the same massive epidemics that we saw with chikungunya, dengue and now Zika. However, these findings underscore the fact that there are additional viruses ‘waiting in the wings’ that may pose threats in the future, and for which we need to be watching.”

Headline:   Diphtheria, eradicated in Venezuela in 1940s, may have killed 3 children

The Venezuelan Society of Public Health has warned that diphtheria, an easily contagious infectious disease eradicated in Venezuela in the late 1940s, could be the reason three children recently died. The health group said the suspected diphtheria cases occurred in Venezuela’s Bolivar state, where the children presented symptoms. Diphtheria, caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, leads to a thick covering in the back of the throat that can lead to difficulty breathing, heart failure, paralysis and death. Diphtheria is easily prevented through a vaccine. The group has urged Venezuela’s health authorities to warn the public of a possible diphtheria outbreak in Bolivar and to supply prophylactic antibiotics and vaccines to children near where the suspected cases occurred, El Nacional reports.

Headline:        Navy Requires All Sailors to Undergo Transgender Education by July 2017

An all-Navy message sent out Tuesday says that all sailors will be required to undergo transgender behavioral education by July 2017. Starting Nov. 1, the training will educate sailors about the Navy’s new transgender policy that allows transgenders to serve in the military, Military.com reported. “This training will emphasize policies and expectations of personal behavior,” the message states. It is unclear what exactly is in these training sessions yet, but the Navy will soon send out messages with more information. In the meantime, leadership is putting together a commander’s tool kit that will guide training, said Lt. Jessica Anderson, a spokeswoman for Naval Personnel Command, to Military.com. “Service members are expected to maintain standards of conduct and treat each other with dignity and respect,” Anderson said. “Training for sailors will be conducted by command triads via mobile training teams or DVD with a facilitation guide if the unit is in a remote area and unable to receive face-to-face training. There will also be webinars for COs to ask questions prior to delivering training to their commands.”

Headline: Eight killed in Boko Haram attack in NE Nigeria

Boko Haram Takfiri militants have killed at least eight people outside a church in northeast Nigeria. According to local residents, the fatalities occurred shortly after morning service on Sunday in the village of Kwamjilari, located about 30 kilometers east of the town of Chibok, in Borno state. “Some of the worshipers remained around the church and the gunmen opened fire and eight men died,” said Luka Damina, a resident from a nearby village. He noted that the gunmen had stationed some of their comrades on the road leading out of the village and they shot anyone who tried to flee. “Many people ran into the bush with gunshot wounds,” Damina added. A local chief from nearby Kautikeri village, where some locals fled, confirmed the death toll, adding that the assailants had set fire to homes and fields of maize that were almost ready for harvest.

Patrick Paumen doesn’t have to worry about forgetting his keys and being locked out of his apartment. That is because he doesn’t need a key anymore—he simply unlocks the door with a wave of his hand. The 32-year-old IT expert from the Dutch city of Heerlen is one of a growing number of people with electronic implants under their skin, mostly to use as keys or for identification. Mr. Paumen has several such implants, or tags, embedded in the fatty tissue of his hands and his lower arm. He uses separate tags to unlock not only his apartment door, but also his office and the gate to a secure parking lot at work. Another stores information he would otherwise put on a business card—name and contact details—and yet another holds similar information for nonbusiness encounters. The implants can be activated and scanned by readers that use radio frequency identification technology, or RFID. Those include ordinary smartphones and readers already installed in office buildings to allow entrance with a common ID card. Privacy concerns will also have to be addressed before tag implants can reach their full potential. Although people promoting them say the implants currently on sale can only be picked up by readers in very close range, some people worry that strangers could still tap their personal information without their knowledge or consent. And while many adults are repelled by the idea of manipulating a perfectly healthy body, young people may accept it as they do most technology surrounding them. Take Patrick and Birthe Kramer, a couple in Hamburg, Germany, who have implants that unlock the door to their home. Their 2-year-old son, whose body remains chip free, already imitates his parents by trying to open the front door with a swish of his hand.

Police are hunting for answers on what caused an explosion that injured 29 people in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, shortly before a second suspicious device was found nearby. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters early indications are that the explosion at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan at about 8.30 p.m. Saturday 17 Sep 2016 “was an intentional act.” But, he said, “there’s no specific and credible threat against New York City at this time from any terror organization.” Investigators on Sunday sifted through blast remnants, examined video and scoured the scene of an explosion that wounded 29 people in Manhattan, attempting to establish if there were any links to international terrorism. The explosion on a commercial and residential street in New York City’s Chelsea district on Saturday night sent a deafening roar and a powerful shock wave through several blocks, wounding people with shrapnel and flying glass. All 29 victims were released from the hospital, officials said on Sunday. Federal Bureau of Investigation investigators will examine remnants of the bomb plus an unexploded device found four blocks away as well as a pipe bomb that exploded about 80 miles (130 km) away in New Jersey on Saturday to see if they were connected, officials said.

An explosion in a garbage can near a Marine Corps charity run in New Jersey is being investigated as a possible terrorist act, authorities told CNN Sunday. Saturday’s blast was likely timed to disrupt the event in Seaside Park, officials said. No injuries were reported — most likely because registration problems delayed the start of the race, so no one was near the garbage can when the explosion happened. Investigators discovered three pipe-bomb-type devices wired together near the boardwalk, authorities said. An initial examination showed the devices were rudimentary, with some type of timer, and only one of them detonated, two federal law enforcement officials told CNN. The spiritual leader of the Druze community in Israel, Sheikh Muafak Tarif, was hosted this morning, Friday, by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, along with other IDF officials and leaders of the Druze community.  According to Channel 10, during the meeting, Druze leaders requested that Eizenkot “guard our brothers across the border in Syria.” Eizenkott replied that “the IDF does not get involved in fighting in Syria, but only gives humanitarian aid to Syrian residents.” “The IDF is aware of what is going on across the border, and the State of Israel has an obligation to the Druze community. With this, the war is happening outside the borders of Israel, and Israel must act according to security considerations.” Residents of the Druze village of Hader at the Syrian border with Israel refuse to receive aid from Israel and there have been terrorists among the Syrian Druze. “In the meeting, we addressed an issue which greatly distresses us, that of our brothers in Hader in Syria,” Tarif said. “We expressed the anger among our community for the killings and shellings into the village from all sorts of factions. It can’t be that Hader, on the border with Israel, will be attacked. We can’t accept this, and we demanded it be stopped.”

According to the report, the two agreed to continue to discuss the possibility of gathering a summit of leaders in Moscow, and agreed to continue to work together to overcome the challenges facing the two nations, on a local level. The prime minister’s office has not yet published a response or report on the issue. It is worthwhile to note that lately, the Russians have been working on a series of communication exercises, meant to try to pressure Israel and the Palestiniains into holding a meeting between Abu Mazen and Netanyahu. This meeting, if negotiated by Russia, would increase Russia’s authority in the Middle East. According to the report, the two leaders [Netanyahu and Abu Mazen] agreed to meet with each other, but no meeting was set. Abu Mazen detailed a long list of preconditions to peace talks, stating that without Israeli acquiescence to these conditions, he would not agree to the meeting. Netanyahu refused to discuss any preconditions, stating that he will not agree to peace talks unless all preconditions are removed. In the past few days, Russians have quoted several Arabs as saying that a meeting between Abu Mazen and Netanyahu would occur by the end of December. Jerusalem has not heard of any such plans.

A Palestinian allegedly stabbed an Israeli soldier in the occupied West Bank before being shot dead on Friday, the army said of the third such attack of the day. “An assailant arrived at a junction near Hebron armed with a knife and stabbed a soldier,” an army statement said. “Forces at the scene shot towards the assailant resulting in his death,” it added. Earlier, a Jordanian national was shot dead after he allegedly tried to stab police officers in Jerusalem and two Palestinians rammed their vehicle into a bus stop in the West Bank, wounding three Israeli civilians before they were shot, Israeli police and military said Friday. In the first incident, a man came out of Jerusalem’s walled Old City brandishing a knife in each hand, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said. In addition to their airstrikes over the Sanaa International Airport, the Saudi Royal Air Force launched several attacks against the Houthi forces at the Nihm District. Meanwhile, forty people were killed in fighting between Shiite Houthi rebels and pro-government forces around southwest Yemen’s main city of Taiz, military sources said Thursday. Also, Yemen’s Houthi rebels and allied troops have captured a Saudi military post in the border region of Jizan, according to military officials from the Shiite movement. They said the Houthi rebels and their allies attacked the post with artillery, rockets and light arms before taking it over in a Sept. 11 battle. A Saudi military spokesman has denied the Houthi claim as “lies,” but a 15-minute video clip posted on social media networks and aired late Wednesday by the Houthis’ al-Masirah TV purportedly shows the shelling of the hilltop post and the attacking force examining weapons and ammunition left behind by the Saudi soldiers who fled.

Three civilians including two children were killed in airstrikes on a rebel-held town in northwest Syria Friday, the fourth full day of a strained truce, activists said. Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said they were the first deaths in airstrikes on an area not held by ISIS since the truce came into force Monday. Syria Headline:  Syrian troops return to Aleppo supply road amid claims of rebel attacks

The Syrian army has returned its troops and arms to the Castello road near the city of Aleppo after coming under rebel fire, the Russian defence ministry said on Friday. The route is a vital supply line into the rebel-held eastern side of Aleppo. Senior Russian officer Vladimir Savchenko said government troops returned after aborting a pullback because rebels were not withdrawing as agreed. “Despite the agreement, opposition ranks have not withdrawn their hardware and weapons from the Castello Road,” Savchenko said. “As a result, with nightfall approaching, the weapons and military hardware withdrawn by government troops were returned to their previous positions.” All forces were supposed to withdraw and admit UN aid trucks as part of a US-Russian ceasefire deal in force since Monday. However, the UN has been unable to deliver aid to the city due to security concerns and refusals by the Syrian government.

Syrian rebels are allegedly preparing for an offensive aimed at driving toward the “gates of Hama” weeks after rolling back regime lines north of the city, according to an activist media outlet. Enab Balad reported Wednesday that opposition forces will soon launch the “second stage” of their Hama operation, after rebels advanced within 15 kilometers of the regime-held city following the launch of a blistering offensive on August 29. A well-informed source, who refused to disclose his name, told the online magazine that the upcoming offensive will bring rebels “to the gates of the city,” while forecasting that the operation “will lead to the collapse of [regime] force’s fortifications” along the northern and northwestern entrances of Hama. The source also ruled out the idea that the campaign would be halted by the cessation of hostilities brokered by Russia and the US that went into effect on Monday, which has seen a relative lull in fighting settle over Syria.

Dozens of U.S. Special Operations Forces have been deployed to Syria’s border with Turkey to fight ISIS there, in support of the Turkish military and “vetted” Syrian rebels, the Pentagon said Friday. Last month, Ankara launched an ambitious military offensive in northern Syria dubbed “Euphrates Shield,” sending in tanks and special forces to support opposition fighters in a bid to remove ISIS fighters and Kurdish militia forces from its frontier. “At the request of the government of Turkey, U.S. special operations forces are accompanying Turkish and vetted Syrian opposition forces as they continue to clear territory from ISIL in and around the area of the Syrian border near Jarabulus and Ar Rai,” said Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis. That area is near the flashpoint city of Aleppo. A U.S. defense official said there were several dozen troops in the new special forces contingent.  The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford, discussed the fight against ISIS earlier with his Turkish counterpart General Hulusi Akar on the sidelines of a NATO chiefs of staff meeting in Croatia.

More than one million refugees have fled South Sudan’s ongoing civil war, overwhelming aid agencies and creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters. The United Nations said Friday that South Sudan joins Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia as countries that have produced over one million refugees. “This is a very sad milestone,” said Leo Dobbs, a spokesman for the U.N. refugee agency. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011, but civil war erupted two years later and tens of thousands have been killed. New fighting in July in the capital, Juba, created a surge of more than 185,000 refugees. Most people fleeing are women and children. Neighboring Uganda hosts the highest number of refugees, and 20,000 have arrived in the past week due to clashes in southern South Sudan. Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Congo and Central African Republic also have received tens of thousands of people fleeing.

Headline:      Al-Shabab Militants Capture Key Somali Town

Al-Shabab militants have captured a key Somali town near with the border with Kenya, according to witnesses. Residents in the town of El Wak told VOA’s Somali Service that heavily armed Shabab fighters attacked the town from two directions late Friday and now control the town. “The soldiers were attacked by al-Shabab, government forces were overpowered,” says a resident who declined to give his name due to security concerns. Immediately after entering El Wak, Shabab fighters attacked the Somali government base on the town’s southern side. Witnesses say they saw Somali government soldiers fleeing across the border into Kenya. Casualties from the fighting are not yet known. Fighting subsided as the nighttime fell and civilians stayed indoors. Al-Shabab “battle wagons” – pickup trucks with large guns mounted on the back – reportedly are patrolling the streets.

Thousands of Bahraini demonstrators took to the streets on Thursday to protest the Al-Khalifa regime’s absentia trial of the prominent Shi’i cleric Ayatollah Sheikh ‘Issa Qassem. Bahraini activists reported several sit-ins and protests around the country, despite a number of warnings from the Al-Khalifa regime. The demonstrators are protesting the unjust trial of Sheikh Qassem that is being conducted by the Al-Khalifa regime in response to his outspoken criticism of their brutal policies.

A suicide bomber shouted “Allahu akbar” and blew himself up in a packed mosque in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 25 people and wounding 30 during Friday prayers, a local official said. A splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat-ur-Ahrar (TTP-JA), claimed responsibility for the blast in Payee Khan, a village in Mohmand Agency that is part of the lawless Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) bordering Afghanistan. The group said it was a revenge attack, accusing tribesmen in the area of launching an assault on its forces and of capturing militants and handing them over to the government. “The suicide bomber was in a crowded mosque, he shouted ‘Allahu akbar’ (God is greatest) and then there was a huge blast,” Naveed Akbar, deputy administrator of Mohmand Agency, told Reuters. Akbar added that some fatalities appear to have been caused when part of the mosque caved in from the force of the blast.

Talk about some shocking news from the sky!  Scientists identified all-time world records for both the longest lightning bolt — nearly 200 miles — and the world’s longest-duration lightning flash — over 7 seconds — according to a report released Thursday. Both records were certified by the World Meteorological Organization, which is in charge of documenting such things. The record-long lightning bolt was spotted over Oklahoma on June 20, 2007, and traveled 199.5 miles, about three-quarters the length of the state. That’s almost the distance from New York City to Washington, D.C. The world’s longest-lasting lightning flash lasted for 7.74 seconds on Aug 30, 2012, over Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France.

Tropical Storm Karl has formed in the open Atlantic Ocean with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm system is about 640 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Karl is moving west at a speed of 13 mph and that movement is expected to continue through Saturday, after which the storm could begin moving west-southwest. The National Hurricane Center said the storm should strengthen gradually due to lower shear and warming sea surface temperatures after 36 hours. “There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect,” the NHC said in a statement. “Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 160 miles from the center.” Tracking through Wednesday puts Karl northeast of Puerto Rico, though it’s unclear if the storm will eventually hit land.

As always, I am looking at what is to determine real truth. Israel’s Acting National Security Adviser Jacob Nagel spoke after Rice, saying that “Israel does not take the military aid package for granted.” Senior U.S. administration officials told Haaretz that in the event of an emergency, such as a war, the United States would be prepared to consider increasing the budget for missile defense systems beyond what is promised in the agreement, as it has done in the past.

The Syrian army claimed on Tuesday it had shot down an Israeli warplane and a drone after an Israeli attack on a regime position in southern Syria, state media reported. Syrian news agency SANA reported that President Bashar Assad’s forces shot down the Israeli aircraft in Syria after the IAF struck in the southern Quneitra countryside in response to a mortar exploding in the Golan Heights. The projectile’s landing in the Golan appeared to be spillover fire from fighting in Syria. In a rare response to a foreign report, the IDF on Tuesday denied that any of its aircraft had been downed, but said Syrian forces had fired two surface-to-air missiles after the Israeli strike Monday night on a Syrian position. However, the military said the missiles were nowhere near the vicinity of the Israel aircraft. The IDF added that all the Israeli jets had returned to base. On Monday evening, Syrian fire crossed into the northern Golan Heights as a nationwide ceasefire brokered by the US and Russia came into effect in the embattled country. In response, the Israeli air force attacked cannons belonging to the Syrian regime on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.

The estimated eight shells spilling in as many days from the Syrian war onto the Golan – and the three Israeli air strikes in reprisal against Syrian army targets – are beginning to sound ominously like Israel’s longstanding automatic tit-for-tat-air-for-rockets relations with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip – never mind who fires them. The latest round occurred Wednesday night, Sept. 13, the day after a fragile truce was due to go into effect in the Syrian war. According to debkafile’s military sources, the Israeli air raid against a Syrian army artillery battery was misplaced. The shells came from the rebel side of the battle. At the same time, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman may have used the stray shells as a pretext to strike the Syrian position and get at the pro-Iranian Hizballah unit posted in the Quneitra area directly opposite Israel’s Golan border. As for the battle, our military sources report that the Syrian Al-Qaeda branch, the rebel Jabhat al Nusra, re-branded as Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, launched it five days ago. The militia’s purpose was to create a land bridge between its forces deployed south of Quneitra and its units positioned to the north of the key town, by seizing Tel al-Ahmar from Syrian forces. In the heat of battle, rebel shells strayed across the border into the Golan. Israel’s relations with the various Syrian rebel groups holding positions or fighting near its borders have had their ups and downs. The main problem is that whenever the Druze villages in the vicinity – currently surrounded by rebel forces – are under threat, especially Al Khadar, their Syrian and Israeli leaders turn to Israel with a demand to intervene and save them. Israel has always resisted their pressure. Had the rebel militia been able to capture Tel al-Ahmar, just 5km from the Israeli border, it would have attained control of the strategic “Red Hills,” which command the main Syrian Golan town of Quneitra and the highway link from southern Syria to Damascus.
But the rebel offensive failed and cost the Al-Sham Front heavy casualties, some of whom were evacuated to Israel for medical treatment.

Lavrov’s statement appeared aimed at Israel, whose jets on Tuesday hit Syrian army positions in two separate sorties after mortar shells from fighting in the civil war, which has recently intensified in the area, hit open areas in the Israeli Golan Heights. Lavrov defended the Syrian regime’s offensive to retake areas from the Fatah al-Shams Front rebel group — until recently known as the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front — which has led to the increase in fighting, some of which has bled into Israel. “There is the need to show restraint and not to allow any provocations in the Golan Heights,” Lavrov said, according to the Russian news agency Tass. Meanwhile, A massive convoy of reinforcements from the Al-Sweida Governorate arrived in the Golan Heights today after the jihadist rebels mobilized more fighters to launch a 4th offensive. According to a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) source, the government convoy was made up of fighters from the National Defense Forces (NDF), Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), Jaysh Al-Muwahiddeen (Druze militia), and the 5th Armored Division.

Minutes after the commencement of the Syrian ceasefire, the Islamist rebels including Hezbollah launched a new offensive in the Golan Heights region of the Al-Quneitra.  We have seen their quiet buildup over the last days.  On Sept. 12^th, the first of 8 shells landed in Israel, which immediately retaliated. Since then, Russia has asked Israel to “lower the flame” while Syrian reinforcements continue to pour into the Golan.  As you can see from the map above ISIS is toe to toe with the Syrians and rebels.  What role Israel will ultimately play remains to be seen. Could this be the beginning of Psalm 83?  Keep on the watch!!

Q: does the Bible say in any way that the third temple MUST be built upon where “we” all believe it should be?

A: No where in the bible that I know of clearly spells out exactly where the Third Temple will be built. What we know for sure is there was a first and second Temple and these Temples were in Jerusalem. Keep in mind, if in fact the first and second Temple were at the site where the Dome of the rock is it would make sense that is why Jesus told John not to measure the outer court as in Revelation 11:2 2 “But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.” Is it possible the Third Temple can be built right next to the Dome of the Rock? I would say yes. I say yes because maybe via some type of peace pact they could agree on having a Jewish Temple standing next to the Dome of the Rock. Maybe this will be part of the covenant that the Antichrist will confirm. Only God knows for sure. Let’s think about why Jesus said don’t measure the court. Is Jesus in fact showing us that the Third Temple will be built on the site where currently the Dome of the Rock is standing? I think so, why even mention the outer court if the Third Temple would be standing somewhere else? I have read that the Temple may be placed somewhere else and I provided you with a link that you can read. http://askelm.com/temple/t001211.htm . One thing I can tell you. If the Third Temple is built on the same site as the Dome or, on another site near it in Jerusalem does it really matter? It may matter to some because if the Third Temple can be built some where other than the Temple Mount area that would mean the Jews don’t have to wait to build it. In that case it would mean that the Antichrist is just about ready to be revealed. The main question one should be asking is, have you received Jesus as Lord yet so that you will not be blinded by the Antichrist when he does in fact stand in the Third Temple Jesus warned us about. Let us always keep our eyes focused on Jesus this way it won’t matter where the Third Temple is built. Remember Jesus died for us and we don’t have to have a Temple! Some day the Jews will see that the real Temple of Salvation was and still is Jesus Christ and, there is no need to kill any animals since Jesus died once for ALL!

Qatar is the latest Gulf country to mobilize their forces to help the Saudi-led Coalition after four of their own soldiers were killed yesterday in Yemen. According to a report released by Al-Jazeera News today, approximately 1,000 Qatari soldiers, 200 armored vehicles, and 30 Apache helicopters were deployed to Yemen to participate in the Saudi-led aggression. “The troops are now reportedly heading to Yemen’s Maareb province, to join the Saudi-led coalition already fighting in the area,” Al-Jazeera added. More Qatari servicemen will be deployed to Yemen in the near future, the report concluded. The reason for the influx of Qatari soldiers is still unknown; however, it is likely to do with yesterday’s situation that involved several Qatari military personnel.

The new Syria ceasefire is rich in detail on the mechanics of ending violence in Aleppo. It says little about how the United States and Russia will establish a new military partnership that is seen as key to the long-term sustainability of the deal. The agreement was reached last Friday after a marathon day of negotiations between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Underscoring the complexity of the new arrangement, even Kerry stumbled over some of the particulars while speaking shortly after the cease-fire came into effect Monday. Here are some details of the agreement, according to the US officials. They weren’t authorized to speak publicly about the still-confidential agreement and demanded anonymity.

• As of Monday, Assad’s government and opposition forces should have ceased all attacks with any weapons, including aerial bombardments, rockets, mortars and anti-tank guided missiles.
  • Sides cannot seek to acquire territory.
  • They should allow rapid, safe, unhindered and sustained humanitarian access to all people in need.
  • In cases when self-defense is required, proportionate force should be used.
  • Two checkpoints will be established on the key Aleppo artery of Castello Road. The Syrian Red Crescent will initially operate the checkpoints, with security of no more than 20 armed personnel. Security will be determined by mutual consent of government and opposition forces. The UN will monitor the personnel, physically or remotely.
  • Government forces must withdraw personnel, heavy weapons and other arms to different points away from Castello Road. In some places, tanks, artillery and mortars must be pulled back at least 3.5 kilometers, or just more than 2 miles. Elsewhere, soldiers with lighter weapons have to retreat at least 500 yards from the road. Other requirements concern crew-served machine guns and observation posts.
  • Opposition forces also must withdraw from the road, in many places equidistant or similar to the level of pullback by government forces. East of Castello Road, their withdrawal will depend on the action of Kurdish forces. If the Kurds retreat 500 yards, the opposition forces should do likewise. Other requirements concern heavy weapons, including infantry-fighting vehicles and tanks, and crew-served machine guns.
  • Opposition must make every effort to prevent al-Qaeda-linked militants from advancing into demilitarized areas.
  • All Syrians should be able to leave Aleppo on Castello Road, including opposition forces with their weapons. Fighters must coordinate with UN officials ahead of time.
  • The US and Russia will address violations of cease-fire.
  • The US and Russia will announce the establishment of their Joint Implementation Center after at least seven straight days of adherence to the cease-fire.
  • Preparatory work for the center should have started Monday, including information-sharing to delineate territories controlled by al-Qaeda-linked militants and those controlled by opposition groups. More comprehensive delineation occurs after the center is established.
  • Starting Monday, the US and Russia should have started developing actionable targets against ISIS and al-Qaeda-linked militants, so that strikes can start immediately after the center is established. Once the first strikes occur, all Syrian military air activities must be halted in agreed areas.

Iraq Headline:   WMD back in Iraq? Pentagon says U.S. planes destroyed ISIL’s chemical weapons facility

The Pentagon said U.S. warplanes eliminated a “significant chemical threat” to Iraqi civilians by bombing a complex of buildings near Mosul that Islamic State militants had converted from pharmaceutical manufacturing to chemical weapons production. Air Force Lieutenant General Jeffrey Harrigian, head of the U.S. Air Force Central Command in Iraq, told Pentagon reporters on September 13 that the target was an IS headquarters facility also used to produce lethal chemicals, possibly including chlorine and mustard gas. A United Nations investigation recently confirmed that IS has used mustard gas in Syria. Harrigian described the air strikes on September 12 as a large, well-planned operation that destroyed more than 50 targets at the site with a variety of U.S. warplanes, including Air Force B-52 bombers and Marine Corps F-18D attack planes. A total of 12 U.S. planes were used. Harrigian said the mission was part of a broader effort to cut off the Islamic State’s main sources of revenue, kill their leaders, and create “organizational dysfunction” in ways that will eliminate the group as a military threat in Iraq and Syria.

The frequency and intensity of clashes looks set to rise as the two groups pursue similar objectives in northern Syria and come into contact along shared front lines. Turkish troops and special forces, backed by allied Syrian rebel groups, launched on August 24 the Euphrates Shield operation to liberate the strategic Syrian city of Jarablus on the border with Turkey from ISIS. Turkey’s president later vowed to press ahead with the military offensive until ISIS and Syrian Kurdish militias no longer posed a security threat to Turkey. As a result, military clashes erupted on August 27 between the Turkish coalition and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The indications that the SDF also intended to continue their military advance to connect the Kurdish-controlled western canton of Afrin to the Rojava region (also known as Western or Syrian Kurdistan) played a crucial role in pushing Turkey to launch the first ground military operation in Syria. Turkish officials insist that Kurdish forces should immediately withdraw east of the Euphrates River or face more attacks by Turkish forces. The US has been able to broker a ceasefire between Turkey and the SDF, which prevented the small clashes from becoming an all-out confrontation. However, as long as there is no solid agreement between Turkey and the Syrian Kurds on how to coexist together, the threat of future clashes will remain.

Iran threatened to shoot down two US Navy aircraft over the weekend as they were flying just inside the Strait of Hormuz, a US defense official said. The EP-3 and P-8 planes were in international airspace but “near Iranian airspace.” The Iranians made three radio calls to the two planes warning them not to enter Iranian airspace and risk being shot down with surface-to-air missiles, the official said. “All three calls used threatening language,” the US defense official said. The US Navy crews knew they were flying “outside the known range of Iranian air defenses” and proceeded with their flight plans. The American crews “responded in an appropriate and calm manner,” the official said, adding that the crews identified their planes themselves as coalition aircraft flying in international airspace. The two planes — reconnaissance aircraft that routinely fly that flight pattern in the Strait of Hormuz — were on separate flight plans, but close to each other. Also, senior US military officials are trying to assess whether the number of incidents with the Iranians have increased or whether more incidents are simply being reported by US naval commanders in the region because of the sensitivity to Iranian incidents.

The rise of Islamic State in Afghanistan poses serious security concerns for Russia, Moscow has said, adding that Washington bears responsibility for the current chaos in the country. Moscow “is concerned over the rise of Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] in Afghanistan because it has far-reaching geopolitical consequences for Russian safety,” said Zamir Kabulov, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s director of the Second Asian Department in Afghanistan. Kabulov served as Russian envoy to Afghanistan in 2004-2009 and is currently a special representative of the Russian president on Afghanistan. Kabulov said that about 2,500 Islamic State combatants are currently in Afghanistan. “They [Islamic State] continue to recruit people and enhance their combat capabilities. If they are not restrained then the chances are that we will have to face an even more powerful force,” Kabulov said. The US bears responsibility for the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, he added.

Colonel Muftah al-Muqarief said his forces, who are loyal to controversial General Khalifa Haftar, seized the port of Brega “without any fighting,” after having already taken control of Ras Lanouf, Es-Sidra and Zuwaytina since Sunday. “The entire oil crescent region is now under our control,” Muqarief told AFP, referring to the area along Libya’s northern coast. The officer said Haftar’s forces took control of Brega – between Ras Lanouf and Zuwaytina – largely thanks to “mediation involving residents and town elders.” The loss of Brega would deal a fresh blow to the Government of National Accord which has been struggling to assert its authority.

The Obama administration plans to accept at least 110,000 refugees from around the world in fiscal year 2017. Secretary of State John F. It represents a 57 percent increase in refugee arrivals since 2015, as ongoing conflicts in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere have spurred an exodus of migrants seeking asylum in Europe, Canada and other regions. A senior administration official, who asked for anonymity because the policy is not yet officially announced, “is consistent with our belief that all countries should do more to help the world’s most vulnerable people.” The official added that Kerry told lawmakers “that if it is possible to do more” in terms of accepting refugees, “we would.”

Thirty members of Boko Haram and five Nigerien soldiers have been killed in fighting in the southeastern Diffa region of Niger, the defense ministry said in a statement late on Tuesday. The clash took place Monday near the village of Toumour, near Lake Chad and the Nigerian border, an area that has plagued by violence from the Islamist militant group and is under an extended state of emergency. Boko Haram took the nearby town of Bosso in early June, in an attack that killed 32 soldiers and was the deadliest Boko Haram assault in Niger since April 2015. Since then, Chad has sent troops to help Niger wage a counterattack. Fighting began on Monday morning when the army fell into an ambush, the statement said, adding that six soldiers were also injured and two militants were captured. “The Boko Haram fighters were trying to prevent people from praying to mark the feast of sacrifice,” said Laouan Boukar, a resident of Toumour, referring to the important Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha that was on Monday.

Two people have been killed in fresh clashes between Indian forces and pro-independence protesters in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Police on Tuesday used tear gas and shotgun pellets against the protesters in several areas including the city of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. A protester was killed by a tear gas canister in the northern area of Bandipora, while another demonstrator lost his life by pellets in Shopian in the south, police said. At least five dozen people were injured in fierce clashes in 10 different places across the disputed valley.  The protesters had defied a curfew imposed on the whole region during Eid al-Adha, or Feast of Sacrifice, which marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Most residents in Kashmir remained indoors for the Islamic ritual. Indian authorities did not allow congregational Eid prayers in the main mosques and Eid grounds in the Muslim-majority region, but prayers were held by people in small neighborhood mosques. Almost all businesses remained closed and traffic stayed off the streets across major towns of the valley. Authorities ordered restrictions on the movement of residents across the region. A large number of paramilitary troops and armed police in riot gear patrolled the deserted streets of many towns and villages across Kashmir.

Headline:         Sweden puts permanent troops on strategic island near Russia

The Swedish military has announced that troops training on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, not far from Russia, will remain there permanently. Officials said “external factors” prompted the order for some 150 soldiers to stay on the island. “The armed forces [now] … have joint permanent groups and troops on Gotland. Gotland is one of our military strategic areas in Sweden … Gotland needs … to increase their operational capacity, and allow troops to practice and work in the field,” the Swedish Armed Forces cited Supreme Commander Micael Byden as saying on its website. Byden later told Swedish broadcaster SVT that “external factors in the world have deteriorated over time and it means I have made a decision about a permanent presence and that we put the battle group here earlier.”  Some 150 soldiers currently training on Gotland received orders on Wednesday morning to remain on the island. “We have to look realistically at the situation in the world. The armed forces are now taking their responsibility, and demonstrating that with increased military capability we are taking responsibility for the country’s sovereignty,” Byden added. Earlier, the Swedish Armed Forces said that “until the battle group is in place, units from different parts of Sweden will be stationed and operate on and around the island.” The last permanent troops left the island back in 2005, the ministry said, adding that Sweden had decided to increase its defense budget by 10.2 billion kronor (US$1.2 billion) from 2016-2020.

In desperation, some middle class families have organized online barter clubs as helpless citizens seek to trade anything for diapers and baby food, powdered milk, medicines, toilet paper and other essentials missing from store shelves or available only on the black market for double and triple already impossibly inflated prices.. There are horrific tales of desperate people slaughtering zoo animals to provide their only meal of the day. Even household pets are targeted as a much-needed source for food. This is a desperate time for a desperate people. As things continue to worsen, President Maduro, unfortunately, is doubling down on the proven failed policies and philosophies of “Bolivarian Socialism,” while diverting attention away from the crisis — pointing fingers at so-called “enemies” of Venezuela such as the United States, Saudi Arabia and others.

Churning the waters of the Northwest Pacific is the strongest tropical cyclone of the 2016 Northern Hemisphere season: Super Typhoon Meranti. It is the fourth Category 5 storm on Earth this year, which is close to the annual average of between four and five such storms. Super Typhoon Meranti, which according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center had maximum sustained winds of 155 knots, or nearly 180 miles per hour, as of Monday evening eastern time, has southern Taiwan and coastal China in its sights for the middle of the week. Fluctuations in the storm’s intensity are likely before Meranti makes its closest pass to southern Taiwan on Wednesday, but it is likely to still be a powerful Typhoon at that time. Taiwan’s second-most populous city, Kaohsiung City, is located in the southwest part of the island. The forecast calls for the storm to be weaker when it passes close to, if not over, parts of Taiwan on Sept. 14. Computer model projections show the storm may pass through the Luzon strait to the south of Taiwan while weakening from a major typhoon to a Category 1 or 2 storm before it hits the Chinese mainland on Sept. 15.

Headline:      N. Korea says floods ‘worst disaster’ since WWII

Floods in North Korea that have left hundreds dead or missing are the “worst disaster” to hit the country since World War II, state media said on Wednesday. The official KCNA news agency did not give exact numbers of those killed or unaccounted for, but a UN report said 138 people have died and 400 are missing after torrential rains caused devastation in the country’s far north. The floods along the Tumen River, which partially marks the border with China and Russia, tore through villages, washing away buildings and leaving thousands in urgent need of food and shelter. “The flood that resulted from the typhoon that hit North Hamgyong province from August 29 to September 2 was the worst disaster since liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945,” KCNA said. It also provided figures on the flood damage and those displaced for the first time, saying 68,900 people had been forced to flee their homes, compared with a UN figure of 107,000. At least 29,800 homes and 900 public buildings were destroyed, it said, adding that 180 sections of road and over 60 bridges had been severely damaged, and electricity and communication lines were cut.

Headline:       Salt Cave Collapses Near Lot’s Wife in Sodom — Family Escapes

An avalanche of rocks caused the collapse of at least one of the salt caves around the area of Sodom, near the site where the formation known as Lot’s Wife stands, as the Sabbath drew to a close on Saturday. The caves are located along the Israeli shoreline of the southern end of the Dead Sea. Members of a family who were reportedly the last people to explore the cave told Ynet they had barely stepped into the cave before hearing the rumble of the rocks. That prompted them to hurry out of the cave. The family said they did not hear or see any signs that anyone else was located deeper in the cave at the time. Rescue teams rushed to the site nevertheless, in order to rule out the possibility that anyone might have been trapped under the rubble. A larger cave system in the same general area known as the “Flour Cave” due to the flour-like consistency of the sandy floor of the cave was officially closed to the public a number of years ago, also due to an avalanche.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet for the first time since the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident, Channel 1 News reported on Sunday. According to the report, the meeting will take place next week in New York during the UN General Assembly. The meeting was agreed upon in secret contacts between Jerusalem and Ankara and was made possible after Erdogan added his signature to the reconciliation agreement signed between the two countries, according to Channel 1. Under the deal, Israel will pay Turkey $20 million in compensation for the deaths of 10 pro-Hamas Turkish assailants who attacked Israeli soldiers during a raid on a Gaza-bound Turkish aid ship in 2010. Israeli cabinet ministers approved the deal with Turkey in late June but Ankara did not send it to parliament until late August because of time pressure following the July 15 attempted putsch by a rogue military faction. In January 2016, President Vladimir Putin had the Saudis talk King Abdullah into establishing a Russian-Jordanian forward command outside Amman alongside the American war room. But over the past months, the Russian-led command center has gradually nudged the US war room into an inferior role in the control of ongoing operations.

Turkey appointed new administrators in two dozen Kurdish-run municipalities on Sunday after removing their elected mayors over suspected links to militants, triggering pockets of protest in its volatile southeastern region bordering Syria and Iraq. Police fired water cannon and tear gas to disperse demonstrators outside local government buildings in Suruc on the Syrian border as new administrators took over, security sources said. There were smaller protests elsewhere in the town. There were also disturbances in the main regional city of Diyarbarkir and in Hakkari province near the Iraqi border, where police entered the municipality building and unfurled a large red Turkish flag, taking down the white local government flags that had previously flown. Turkish authorities are accusing Kurdish militants of detonating a car bomb that wounded 50 people in front of the ruling party’s municipal headquarters Monday in the eastern city of Van. Van Governor Ibrahim Tasyapan told state-run Anadolu news agency that 46 civilians and four police officers were wounded in the attack at a police check point outside the party offices. Tasyapan said two of the wounded were in serious condition, but he did not specify if they are officers or civilians. An earlier statement by the governor’s office alleged the bombers were affiliated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. Hundreds of people have been killed and injured in Turkey in recent months in attacks the government says were carried out by Kurdish militants or the Islamic State group. The governor’s office said security forces are working to apprehend the perpetrators of the car-bombing. They comprise 14 Catholics, six Orthodox, four Protestants, one Greek Orthodox, plus 29 refugees identifying themselves simply as “Christian” rather than by denomination or sect. Three women were killed by police Sunday after allegedly trying to stage an attack on the main police station in Mombasa, Kenya. The women entered the police station saying they wanted to report a stolen phone, Mombasa police said. One then pulled a knife and another threw a gas bomb, which started a fire, BBC reported. Two officers were hurt in the incident. Though it is not clear who is behind the attack, authorities suspect the extremist group al-Shabab, which has staged numerous similar attacks in Kenya. Protests raged elsewhere in the state as well. Several trucks that were burned had Tamil Nadu license plates, said Chandrashekhar, a deputy commissioner of police in Bangalore who goes by one name. The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that Karnataka would have to release 12,000 cubic feet of water, or almost 90,000 gallons, per second to Tamil Nadu every day until Sept. 20 from the Cauvery River, which originates in Karnataka and flows downstream to Tamil Nadu. It is the main source of water for the states’ thirsty rice crops, particularly in the event of a weak monsoon like this year’s in the southwest. The water dispute has provoked ethnic resentments on each side of the border. On Saturday, a Tamil student in Bangalore was publicly beaten, according to local news reports. The attackers took a video of the beating and posted it online, prompting the police in Bangalore to open a case on Monday. Two schoolchildren in California are suspected of having leprosy, but where might they have caught the disease? This week, officials in Riverside Country (which is near Los Angeles) said they are investigating the suspected cases of leprosy, now usually called Hansen’s disease, at an elementary school in the area. Nursing staff at the school first notified officials about the possible infections on Sept. 2, but it will take several weeks to confirm them, according to the Los Angeles Times. Cases of Hansen’s disease in the United States are rare, but they do occur, with about 100 to 200 cases typically reported each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2014, there were 175 new cases of Hansen’s disease diagnosed in the United States, and nearly three-quarters of these cases were reported in seven states: Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, New York and Texas, according to the U.S. National Hansen’s Disease (Leprosy) Program. There’s currently not enough information provided about these two suspected case to know where they might have originated, Adalja said. But armadillos in the United States are known to harbor the bacteria that cause the disease, and it’s possible for people to become infected through contact with the animals, Adalja said, although the risk of this is low. People can also become infected with leprosy through prolonged close contact with patients who have leprosy, Adalja said. Headline:   Mexicans march for gay marriage after opponents rally

Supporters of gay and lesbian rights marched to Mexico City’s Metropolitan Cathedral in response to protests on Saturday opposing same-sex marriage. Demonstrators carried banners saying “I respect your family, respect mine.” The cardinal of Mexico City, Norberto Rivera Carrera, denied the Catholic church was behind the protests in cities across the country. In May, President Enrique Pena Nieto proposed a bill which would legalise same-sex marriage nationwide. Gay marriage is legal in Mexico City and three other states. Some states have less formal arrangements. The marches on Saturday were organised by a Catholic organisation, the National Front for the Family. Despite denial of involvement by the Catholic church, in some states priests were seen taking part. There have not been such big marches over government legislation on social and religious issues in Mexico since the 1930s during the country’s civil war, the BBC’s Katy Watson in Mexico City reports.

Headline:   Pastors could face jail over Mass. anti-discrimination law

Churches in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts have grave concerns about a new anti-discrimination law that could force congregations to accommodate the transgender community – under the threat of fines and jail time. The law, which goes into effect in October, does not specifically mention churches or other houses of worship. However, the attorney general, along with the government commission assigned to enforce the law, have a different point of view. Attorney General Maura Healey wrote that places of public accommodation include: “auditoriums, convention centers, lecture halls, houses of worship, and other places of public gathering.” The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, the commission responsible for enforcing the anti-discrimination law, reinforced that interpretation in a document titled, “Gender Identity Guidance.” “Even a church could be seen as a place of public accommodation if it holds a secular event, such as a spaghetti supper, that is open to the general public,” the document states.  “All persons, regardless of gender identity, shall have the right to the full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities and privileges of any place of public accommodation.”

The water of Daldykan River near Norilsk in Siberia was permanently coloured red after a local metallurgic plant accidentally dropped its waste water, Norilsk Nickel, a Russian nickel and palladium mining and smelting company, which owns the plant, said in a statement. The accident does not pose a risk to people or animals, according to the company, and it is taking steps to eliminate the consequences. On September 5 a massive downpour caused one of the plant’s reservoirs to overflow, which caused the water discharge. The company promised to make sure that in future the plant is equipped to deal with natural phenomena that could cause emergencies.

Tremors were felt as far away as western Kenya. “This incident has caused a lot of damage,” Deodatus Kinawila, the district commissioner of Bukoba, told the BBC. “For now, the situation is calm and under control,” he said later.

For the past 8 years The End Times Research Ministry has been doing what we can to support Pastor Titus in Kenya.  Pastor Titus was under the wing of Pastor Timothy Moore who had visited Pastor Titus in Kenya.  Pastor Timothy was my check and balance for Pastor Titus.  After Pastor Moore passed away I was left to carry on the work in Kenya trusting Pastor Titus’ without anyone actually being in Kenya. Without a doubt we have seen the churches built, and people being helped such as feeding the poor.

Last year in some of my posts I mentioned changing the course of my ministry. Since I do not have anyone in Kenya to monitor the works of Pastor Titus I am no longer going to support the Kenya ministry under Pastor Titus.  I think it is very important that who ever this ministry tries to help have people in the exact area who can act as a checks and balance for the ministry and, since this ministry does not I can no longer keep on supporting the Kenya ministry.   I think it wise that anyone who has been supporting Pastor Titus via Ascent Ministries and still wants  to do so should take a trip to Kenya to visit Pastor Titus to make sure all your blessings go to where they are intended to go.  I am sure that if Pastor Titus’ work has not altered that the Lord will continue to take care of him and his needs.  Pastor Titus has received ample  support  over the past 8 years to get him and his Church on his feet. Headline:  PA court to make final decision about elections on September 21

The Palestinian Authority municipal elections in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have been suspended, putting the holding of the long-awaited contests in jeopardy. The PA High Court of Justice said it suspended the elections, scheduled for October 8, because of the exclusion of Jerusalem from the electoral process, and amid concerns about the legality of local courts in Gaza. “In light of the deprivation of Jerusalem and its suburbs’ citizens of their electoral rights, and [concerns about] the legality of decisions taken by courts in the Gaza Strip… We rule to suspend temporarily the Palestinian government’s decision to hold elections,” said a copy of Thursday’s ruling published on Wafa, the official Palestinian news site. Israel informed the PA in July that it will not allow it to hold elections in any part of Jerusalem. The PA High Court will hold another hearing regarding the future of the elections on September 21.

Headline:  Israeli military expects Islamic State attack on its southern border ‘within six months’

Israel is bracing for an Islamic State (Isil) terror attack along its southern border with Egypt within the next six months, a senior Israeli military officer has warned. Wilayat Sinai, the jihadist group’s affiliate in the Sinai desert, has been stealing armored vehicles and anti-tank missiles from Egypt’s military and Israeli expects the weapons will soon be turned against its forces on the Egyptian border. Thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets to protest against Saudi Arabia ahead of this year’s hajj pilgrimage. Syria Headline:        Turkish tank hit by missile in northern Syria, three soldiers killed

Three Turkish soldiers were killed and four others were wounded during an attack by the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) on two Turkish tanks late on Sept. 6 as Turkish forces push deeper into Syrian soil. The attack took place near the Syrian town of al-Rai on the 14th day of Turkey’s Euphrates Shield operation in northern Syria, the Turkish military announced Sept. 6. Two soldiers were killed on the spot and five were injured when ISIL missiles hit the two tanks in the Wuquf village, the military said. One of the wounded soldiers later died in hospital despite all attempts to save his life, lifting the death toll to three, the military said. Two members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), which is backed by the Turkish military in their advance on ISIL in Syria, were also killed while two others were wounded.

Erdogan raked in instant winnings: Before he left China, he had pocketed Putin’s nod to grab a nice, 4,000-sq.km slice of northern Syria, as a “security zone” under the control of the Turkish army and air force, with Russian non-interference guaranteed. This Turkish zone would include the Syrian towns of Jarablus, Manjib, Azaz and Al-Bab. Ankara’s selling-point to the West was that the planned security zone would provide a safe haven for Syrian refugees and draw off some of the outflow perturbing Europe. Syria Headline:     ISIS launches new offensive in southwest Deir Ezzor

The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched a new offensive in the Deir Ezzor Governorate on Friday, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s 137th Artillery Brigade headquarters and Tal Kroum. ISIS began the assault by storming the southwestern perimeter of Tal Kroum, resulting in a fierce battle with the Syrian Armed Forces that is still ongoing at the moment. Meanwhile, west of the 137th Brigade’s HQ, another ISIS unit attempted to bypass the Syrian Arab Army’s defenses along the main road leading to this strategic military installation; however, they were subsequently repelled after a short battle this morning. According to a military source from the 137th Brigade, their forces destroyed 3 armored vehicles that belonged to the Islamic State near Tal Kroum, while also killing another 11 militants that were attempting to infiltrate their positions.

Iraq Headline:       U.S. sends 500 more troops to help fight 4,500 Islamic State militants in Mosul

The United States has increased its deployed forces by more than 500 troops to assist Iraqi security forces in the operation to claim Mosul from Islamic State control. Col. John Dorrian, spokesman for the United States’ Operation Inherent Resolve mission against the Islamic State, on Thursday said the increase in deployed troops is to help Iraq seize the Islamic State’s Iraqi stronghold, Mosul — where he estimates there are up to 4,500 IS militants remaining. U.S. President Barack Obama and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi both hope to seize Mosul before the year’s end, but Dorrian said the operation is “a very tough battle.” The Islamic State, also known as ISIS, ISIL and Daesh, captured Mosul as part of a land grab in 2014 that saw to the militant group’s peak in terms of land acquisition. The battle to directly capture Mosul has been held off, though Iraqi security forces, aided by the U.S.-led anti-Islamic State coalition, have recaptured surrounding areas and targeted IS positions for months. “Prime Minister Abadi has come out and said that he would like to get this done within the year, and we are going to be at the Iraqi security force’s side and be there to try to help pursue that,” Dorrian said. Dorrian said Iraqi security forces are leading the battle for Mosul and that the United States’ role is to train and assist the soldiers, with the aid of airstrikes and special operations missions.

Kurdish Headline:     Turkish army bombs Kurdish town northwest Syria, civilian casualties reported

Turkish army forces bombed the Kurdish town of Afrin in Aleppo province in northern Syria with heavy artillery on Thursday, causing casualties among civilians, activists and eyewitnesses reported. At least six civilians were killed and eight others were injured in the Turkish bombardment, which targeted the Sourkeh district in Afrin. “Turkey’s military forces, stationed on the Syrian border, launched dozens of artillery shells on Afrin. At least 50 shells hit residential buildings in the Sourkeh district,” rights activist Roj Musa told ARA News in Afrin. “Six civilians lost their lives so far, and eight others were injured, some of them are in critical condition,” Musa reported. The bombardment also caused huge destruction in residential buildings. Local rescue teams continued searching for survivors under the rubble. In the meantime, the Kurdish administration in Afrin issued a list of the names of the victims, and condemned the Turkish attack.

Headline:  Taliban threatens second provincial capital in Afghan south

At least 8 people were killed and 14 others were wounded in a rocket attack in northern Baghlan province of Afghanistan, local officials said Friday. The incident took place late on Thursday afternoon in the new city of Baghlan Markazi district after a mortar round landed in the area. Provincial public health officials confirmed 8 civilians including a woman and two children were among those killed. The officials further added that a number of injured civilians are in critical condition amid fears that the death toll could rise. No group including the Taliban militants has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident. In a statement released by Taliban earlier today, the group said they are not involved in the attack. Baghlan is among the relatively volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan where Taliban insugents are actively operating in its various districts and often carry out insurgency activities. Meanwhile, The Taliban has launched an offensive to take control of Tarin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province. Its forces have entered the city and are engaged in heavy fighting with Afghan forces there. Tarin Kot is the second provincial capital in the south that is under direct threat of a Taliban takeover.

North Korea drew global condemnation after conducting its fifth nuclear test on Friday, the anniversary of the reclusive nation’s founding, and said it was now able to produce miniaturized nuclear arms. In a statement on state-run television, Pyongyang said no radiation was leaked in the blast. The official Korean Central News Agency said the detonation of a nuclear warhead showed the regime has the ability to attach atomic weapons to rockets. “The standardization of the nuclear warhead will enable the DPRK to produce at will and as many as it wants a variety of smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear warheads of higher strike power,” KCNA said, using the acronym for North Korea. “This has definitely put on a higher level the DPRK’s technology of mounting nuclear warheads on ballistic rockets.” The test drew opprobrium from world leaders, including South Korean President Park Geun Hye and U.S. President Barack Obama, and prompted an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council Friday in New York. The blast set off an artificial earthquake around 9:30 a.m. Seoul time, with the defense ministry saying the explosion was 10 kilotons. The United States Geological Survey put the quake magnitude at 5.3. The Pentagon said it will be deploying an aircraft to the region to collect air samples that can help determine the nature of the explosion.

Headline:  Russia Holds Large-scale Military Drills in Crimea

Russia on Friday deployed cruise missiles, multiple rocket launchers, tanks and its latest anti-aircraft system at massive military drills in Crimea. Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in March 2014 and since then has sent thousands of troops and heavy weaponry there. The Russian defense ministry invited dozens of journalists Friday to a remote firing range at the Black Sea coast to display elaborate war games which involved paratroopers, tanks, cruise missiles launched from a submarine and the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system. The drills, which began across southern Russia and Crimea earlier this week and have involved a total of over 120,000 troops, are some of the largest exercises Russia has held for years. The chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, insisted in emailed comments that there have never been more than 12,500 troops involved in the drills at a given moment, which means that Russia did not violate any international treaties.

It also sent the gauge below its average price during the past 50 days for the first time since July 6. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 302.49 points, or 1.6 percent, to 18,177.42. Tranquility that has enveloped global markets for more than two months is being upended as central banks start to question the benefits of further monetary easing, sending government debt, stocks and emerging-market assets to the biggest declines since June. The dollar jumped. The S&P 500 Index tumbled 2 percent in its biggest drop since the Brexit vote emerging-market assets and global equities fell the most since Britain voted to secede from the European Union. An outbreak of super-gonorrhoea in the UK is out of control and efforts to stop it have been unsuccessful, health officials have warned. It is feared the sexually transmitted disease may be becoming increasingly resistant to treatment, prompting concerns further rapid spread could occur. In April, it emerged an outbreak of so-called ‘super-gonorrhoea’ had occurred in Leeds, with cases also noted in the West Midlands, London and southern-England. It began among heterosexual couples but has since been spread among men who have sex with men (MSM). In a report issued today by health agency Public Health England, the group warned: “The outbreak of HL-AziR gonorrhoea in England persists. There have been 17 cases of HL-AziR gonorrhoea reported to date in 2016 compared to 15 cases for the same time period in 2015. Between November 2014 and August 2016 there have been a total of 48 confirmed and two probable cases. “The potential for rapid spread of HL-AziR N. gonorrhoeae among high risk sexual networks including MSM is of particular concern.”

Experts reassembled pieces of tiles found amid tons of earth from the site known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif. They say the tiles date from the period of the Second Temple, during the time of King Herod about 2,000 years ago. The temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD during a Jewish rebellion. Some 600 segments of coloured stone floor have been found since archaeologists began examining the debris from the hilltop site in 2004.

The sources added that the Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah has already deployed a large contingency of fighters near the Quneitra area, located between Syria and the Israeli Golan Heights. The Fars report did not provide further details on what such a possible attack would involve or when it would take place. On Monday, the former head of the Israeli domestic security agency said the Syrian conflict is entering a highly unpredictable phase, adding that the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah posed a growing threat to Israel despite losing many fighters.

The Palestinian economy could easily double, while sky-high unemployment and poverty would plummet if the Israeli occupation were lifted, the United Nations development agency said Tuesday. In a new report, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) pointed to a long list of ways the Israeli occupation stifled the economies of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including the confiscation of Palestinian land, water and other natural resources. The widespread restrictions on the movement of people and goods, destruction of homes, trees and other assets, and the expansion of Israeli settlements were also damaging, it said. Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon charged that “the UN report is filled with half-truths and vicious lies against the State of Israel. I call on the UN secretary-general to reject the conclusions of the report, as they are an ugly distortion of the truth.” Israel’s delegation to the UN said the report was part of a campaign by the Palestinian leadership to move the conflict to the international arena, where they could reach diplomatic achievements without having to negotiate with Israel. “The Palestinians must not be allowed to take over the UN’s agencies and divert them of their original purpose—working for the betterment of the world—thus turning them into ‘lie machines’ that accuse Israel of everything imaginable,” Danon said. “The UN secretary-general must make it clear that continuing to spread lies against Israel will lead to a serious and painful cutback in the budget of the agency preparing the report,” he added.

After a number of arrests of Jews praying outside of the gates of the Temple Mount, police justified the arrests during a court hearing on Monday, claiming that the ban on Jewish prayer is not limited to the Temple Mount, but extends to the areas around the entrances to the holy site and even to the Muslim Quarter as a whole. Police representatives Safi Sarahan and Roei Avrahami explained the ban in court, following questioning by an attorney from the Honenu organization representing several girls arrested for praying in the vicinity of the Temple Mount. The officers revealed that prayer by Jews anywhere near the Temple Mount or even in the Muslim Quarter was considered “disturbing the peace”, except where coordinated with the police in advance. “Prayer is permissible anywhere in the Jewish Quarter, but the moment you come without permission and pray in the Muslim Quarter, that causes a public disturbance. Inside the Muslim Quarters and the entrances it is forbidden to pray.” When pressed by the Honenu attorney to cite the law which prohibited Jewish prayer in the Muslim Quarter, the police represents said the matter was within the discretion of the police, under their general responsibility for “keeping the peace”.

According to reporter Oren Nahari, the famed Mitrokhin archive, kept by KGB defector Vasily Mitrokhin, reveals that Abbas was a KGB spy in Damascus in 1983. The documents, obtained by Israeli researchers and scholars Isabela Ginor and Gideon Remez, show that Abbas, who was code-named Krotov (mole) worked under Mikhail Bodganov, who was then station posted in Damascus and is now a top Russian diplomat in the Middle East. Bogdanov was caught in a diplomatic tussle earlier this week after trying to broker a summit between Abbas and Netanyahu in Moscow, with each side saying it was willing to meet and the other side wasn’t. It’s not clear if Abbas, who studied in university in Moscow in the 1980s, was an agent before or after his time in Damascus. Mitrokhin’s notes are considered among the most complete information available to researchers about the KGB. He brought them to the UK in 1992 and his edited notes were released in 2014. His handwritten notes remain classified by MI5. Responding to the report that Mahmoud Abbas was a KGB agent in Syria in 1983, a top Palestinian official says its all malarkey tied to the failed bid for a Netanyahu-Abbas meeting in Moscow. Yemen’s national army and pro-government Popular Resistance committees have claimed control over a number of strategic locations in Marib governorate’s Sirwah, Al Arabiya News Channel reported a spokesman as saying on Wednesday. Abdullah al-Shandqi, a spokesman for Popular Resistance committees, said about 35 of the rebels from the Iran-backed Houthi militias and forces loyal to deposed president Ali Abdullah Saleh have been killed following clashes in the area. The committees are armed groups, which were formed in several Yemeni provinces during the Yemeni Civil War and after the attempted coup by the Houthis to topple the internationally recognized government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in September 2014. Since the coup attempt, the Houthis have been in control of the capital, Sanaa. Backed by the Saudi-led coalition, the Yemeni army together with the committees are trying to fully liberate Sirwah to finally enter the Khawlan area, considered to be one of the entrances to Sanaa.

Syrian activists say at least 10 civilians have been killed in a new airstrike on the neighborhood where a suspected chlorine gas attack struck the previous day. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says at least one child was among the victims of Wednesday’s strike on the al-Sukkari neighborhood in the contested city of Aleppo. The Aleppo branch of the Syrian Civil Defense search and rescue organization put the initial casualty toll at 20 dead and more than 40 wounded but disparate tolls are common in the aftermath of airstrikes. Medical workers in the city have said the opposition-controlled neighborhood was hit with chlorine gas on Tuesday, though the report could not be independently verified. Activists and medical workers say Syrian government and Russian jets are behind the attacks. At least one person dies and more than 100 injured Tuesday’s bombing, Al Jazeera reported. Syrian activists and rescue workers in the rebel-held part of the contested city said government warplanes dropped the suspected chlorine bombs on Tuesday on a crowded neighborhood. The report could not be independently verified and it was not clear how it was determined that chlorine gas was released. In Tuesday’s attack, a medical report from one of the hospitals in the besieged eastern rebel-held part of Aleppo was shared with journalists via text messages. It said at least 71 people, including 37 children and 10 women, were treated for breathing difficulties, dry cough, and that their clothes smelled of chlorine. A car bombing claimed by the Daesh terror group struck a bustling commercial area of central Baghdad overnight, killing at least 12 civilians, Iraqi officials said on Tuesday. The explosives-laden pick-up truck was left in a parking lot in the Shiite-dominated district of Karradah, near a hospital and shops, a police officer said. Up to 28 people were wounded and at least 15 cars were damaged, he said. A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media. Mourners held a funeral procession for some of the dead on Tuesday morning, with men carrying coffins wrapped in Iraqi flags as women wailed and pounded their chests in grief. At the scene of the bombing, shocked residents examined the blood-stained pavement and the damage to nearby shops. Daesh issued a statement saying the suicide attack targeted Shiites. The Associated Press could not verify the authenticity of the statement, but it was posted on militant websites commonly used by the extremists.

On Tuesday, the Syrian National Resistance held a press conference in Tel Rifaat to introduce its founding declaration, which was read out by Rezan Hedo, an independent member of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces’ political wing. “Oh Syrian brothers, people of the region have suffered from the decades of Turkish-Ottoman rule, [which] has left us with only ignorance, backwardness, hatred, sectarianism and fighting between brothers at the same time as our wealth was taken away as well as parts of our land,” the speech, which was replete with nationalistic terminology, began. The new group went on to launch further broadsides against Turkey, accusing Syria’s northern neighbor of perpetrating “the worst forms of genocide” against people in the region, including Arabs, Kurds, Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians and Chaldeans. “Today, [Turkey] has returned with a new look but with the same [old] mentality; to occupy other parts of our Syrian land after sowing discord and infighting between Syrians through their support for terror,” the statement added, in reference to Ankara’s military operation in northern Syria.

Abdul Karim, the head of Uruzgan provincial council, on Wednesday warned of the collapse of the city unless authorities in Kabul provide air support and ground reinforcements. “If there is no significant air support and ground reinforcement, Tarin Kot will collapse,” Karim said. Local Afghan officials say many of the embattled police and soldiers around Tarin Kot are fighting with minimal reinforcements and often with insufficient food and ammunition. Headline:  River in Russia Mysteriously Turns Blood Red

Startled residents of a Russian city inside the Arctic Circle have been posting photos of a local river that has mysteriously turned blood red. Photos published on Russian social media appear to the show the Daldykan River near the city of Norilsk flowing crimson. Russian authorities have yet to establish a reason for the river’s unusual appearance, but local people quickly linked it to a giant metals plant upstream. Russia’s Environment Ministry said it was investigating the plant as the likely cause. Norilsk is known as one of the most polluted cities on earth, built around factories mostly belonging to the vast metals company Norilsk Nickel. Some Norilsk residents wrote in a local social media group that they believe the river’s biblical shade is linked to runoff from a nearby smelting plant. Some suggested the color was being produced by wastewater mixed with mineral ore leaking into the river from the Hope Metals Plant.

At least two people have died due to Tropical Storm Newton, which is spreading heavy rains into Arizona and New Mexico on Wednesday after making landfall as a hurricane in Mexico’s mainland. A shrimp boat capsized in the Gulf of California amid rough seas. At least two people died and three others were missing. BBC News reported that officials said the five people ignored warnings against going out to sea. Tropical Storm Newton is expected to generate up to 3 inches of rain in the central part of the Baja California peninsula. Mexico’s Sonora state is expected to see rain accumulation up to 6 inches — possibly 10 inches in isolated areas. Southeastern Arizona and southern New Mexico are expected to get from 1 inch to 3 inches of total rain through Thursday. “This heavy rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides in areas of mountainous terrain,” the NHC said. Mexico’s government has changed a hurricane warning into a tropical storm warning for the northwestern coast of mainland Mexico. The storm system, which is near Mexico’s Bahia Kino, has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and is moving north at a speed of 17 mph.
