Headline:  New York explosion that injured 29 was ‘intentional act,’ mayor says

Police are hunting for answers on what caused an explosion that injured 29 people in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, shortly before a second suspicious device was found nearby. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters early indications are that the explosion at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan at about 8.30 p.m. Saturday 17 Sep 2016 “was an intentional act.” But, he said, “there’s no specific and credible threat against New York City at this time from any terror organization.” Investigators on Sunday sifted through blast remnants, examined video and scoured the scene of an explosion that wounded 29 people in Manhattan, attempting to establish if there were any links to international terrorism. The explosion on a commercial and residential street in New York City’s Chelsea district on Saturday night sent a deafening roar and a powerful shock wave through several blocks, wounding people with shrapnel and flying glass. All 29 victims were released from the hospital, officials said on Sunday. Federal Bureau of Investigation investigators will examine remnants of the bomb plus an unexploded device found four blocks away as well as a pipe bomb that exploded about 80 miles (130 km) away in New Jersey on Saturday to see if they were connected, officials said.

Headline:  Blast near Marine Corps race in New Jersey probed as possible terror act

An explosion in a garbage can near a Marine Corps charity run in New Jersey is being investigated as a possible terrorist act, authorities told CNN Sunday. Saturday’s blast was likely timed to disrupt the event in Seaside Park, officials said. No injuries were reported — most likely because registration problems delayed the start of the race, so no one was near the garbage can when the explosion happened. Investigators discovered three pipe-bomb-type devices wired together near the boardwalk, authorities said. An initial examination showed the devices were rudimentary, with some type of timer, and only one of them detonated, two federal law enforcement officials told CNN. Investigators said they found similarities between this device and the bomb that exploded in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood Saturday evening

Headline:  ISIS wing claims responsibility for Minnesota mall attack

The man who stabbed nine people at a Minnesota mall Saturday before being shot dead by an off-duty police officer was a “soldier of the Islamic state,” according to an ISIS-linked news agency. The statement posted online Sunday by the Amaq agency follows a pattern of ISIS-related media claiming responsibility for what appear to be the acts of individuals across Europe in the past few months. The FBI is calling the attack “a potential act of terrorism.” Police and witnesses said the man, wearing a private security company uniform, entered Crossroads Mall on Saturday night.
